Council opens doors of Belle Vue House to interested parties

Last month Babergh District Council opened the doors of Belle Vue House by appointment, to ensure that interested parties had all the information needed to submit future proposals for the building.

A Babergh spokesperson said, “ We’ve been encouraged by the level of interest shown so far. A number of groups were shown around with other viewings planned. The Mayor writes...

Mayor and Mayoress cycle across France for Charity Robert and Hilary (Mayor and Mayoress) have in recent years have been keen long-distance cyclists and have completed journeys such as Calais to Nice. Last year they decided, for a holiday, to cycle from St Malo on the northern coast of Brittany to Nice on the Mediterranean coast, a distance of 900 miles. And then Robert became Mayor.

The Mayor often uses their period in office to raise money for their nominated charities and so it seemed clear that they should use the trip to raise money. Robert’s charities are Sudbury Citizens Advice, where he is Treasurer and Success after Stroke (he had a stroke a few years ago). Robert writes: “First of all, there was the body preparation which involved quite a few months of sessions on the indoor cycle trainer or more pleasantly going on short cycle trips to places like Wales and Spain. The bikes also had to be in good condition and thanks go to Torque Bikes in Cross Street for helping when buying the bikes and setting them so there were no issues during the trip.

“Getting to St Malo was a bit of a challenge which involved taking the train from Sudbury to Portsmouth. That involved about 4 train changes and a walk over Hungerford Bridge to get to Waterloo. Then getting to the Ferry from Portsmouth station, getting on the overnight ferry while queuing with all the other traffic and then only having a seat to sleep in (no cabins). The cycling started at 10 the next morning!

“The ride turned out to be 944 miles as per our cycling computers and broadly it can be broken into three main parts. St Malo to the Massif Centrale, then across the Massif Central and Cevennes and Ardeche regions and the after the Rhone across Provence and Pre-Alps. They were about 3 equal steps.

“The trip from St Malo to the Massif Centrale was undulating but with not many steep climbs. Up to the Loire Valley (about 200 miles) it was prime dairy country with cows everywhere and lots of butter and cheese factories. There weren’t many large towns but areas not dissimilar to Sudbury with a central market town and supported villages. On reaching the Loire at Angers the landscape was naturally flatter with the first sight of vineyards. Angers is important in English history as it is the seat of the Plantagenets who ruled England of 300 years and later in the trip we saw the tombs of Richard 1st and Henry 2nd.

“The Massif Centrale is not mountainous but does have perky climbs up from rivers that cut across forests. The Cevennes has many extinct volcanoes and long, sometimes steep climbs to the top. It’s very open landscape though so can be windy. The Ardeche region has spectacular scenery with gorges cut out of limestone escarpments during the last ice-age. This region is a UNESCO heritage site.

“Across the Rhone and into Provence and Pre-Alps, where the metres climbed started to grow. A big highlight for us in the region was the chance to cycle up Mont Ventoux which cyclists will know as an iconic climb regularly featuring in the Tour de France. The climb is 1,558 metres in 21km., an average of 7.5%. That last figure hides the variations though – there was a 3km stretch that didn’t go below 11% and went to 15% - mind expanding - difficult to train for in Suffolk. It took us 3 hours to get up and although there were stops there was no walking! The downhill bit was good though!

“Further into the Alps there was more spectacular scenery and challenging climbing – we completed just over 20,000 metres of climbing over the trip. There were also great downhills and the final ride down to Nice was 22 miles long containing many hairpin bends which needed attention!

“The trip for us was exhilarating and it will be difficult to top that as cycling trips go. It was also good that fortuitously we could combine it with charity raising activities. 30 Years of Book Fairs to Help Children Celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, the NSPCC’s annual Colchester Book Fair will be taking place on Saturday, 26 and Sunday 27, October, at Holmwood House School, Chitts Hill, Lexden, CO3 9ST, a short distance from Junction 26 of the A12.

The Fair will be open from 9.30am until 4pm on both days and entry is £1.50 for adults, with under-16s free.

The event attracts book enthusiasts from far and near, with around 35,000 new and second-hand books, many now out of print. Games, DVDs, CDs and jigsaws, all tried and tested to avoid disappointment, are also included in the sale, which is re-stocked on the second day.

During the past few months, all the donated items have been meticulously sorted into categories by a dedicated team of volunteers to help visitors find their chosen subject or favourite author easily.

To date, the Colchester Book Fair has raised more than £400,000 for the children’s charity. Nearly 90% of the NSPCC’s revenue comes from legacies, gifts, donations and fundraising activities. This highlights just how important public support is to the organisation in enabling it to continue its work protecting vulnerable children and campaigning for their rights and safety.

All we are hearing from our national politicians is doom and gloom. Rationing at supermarkets, less food in small shops and leaked government memos from Westminster quoting import 50-60% delays at major terminals and a push on prices. The Coop Juniors this year are celebrating their 15th Anniversary of their productions at Snape, so they have called it Christmas Spectacular too.

Double Triumph Revitalises 50 Year History Group A magnificent 50th Anniversary Supper and a packed History Day has revitalised the Long Melford History and Archaeological Society in a single week.

On Tuesday 10th September 27 members of the group met for a meal at the Bull Inn in Melford to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the group in 1969. Not just 50 years to the day, but to the exact minute, acting chair Julie Thomson read aloud the minutes of the first ever LMHAS meeting which was held in the Primary School at 8pm on the 10th September 1969.

Speeches were made about the Society, the history of the Bull itself as well as congratulating the attendees on their club’s longevity. The only two surviving original members, former President Sir Richard Hyde– Parker and former Chair and Mr B Byford, were sadly too unwell to attend, but sent in a few words of encouragements, congratulations, along with recollections, which were read to the diners. The evening was enjoyed by all and the buzz around the room as memories were tested and events revisited was palpable.

Yet the best was yet to come. At 11 o’clock on Sunday 15th September, Long Melford’s Old School Community Centre opened to the public with a breathtaking display of local people’s treasures and photographs, books and coins, maps and artefacts. This was the very same building that the Inaugural meeting took place fifty years earlier, so a fitting place to hold the celebrations. There were many objects on display too, with contributions from many local groups and organisations, including the old village stocks and even a Second World War bomb casing.

LM’s Village Recorder, Julie Thomson, gave an uplifting presentation about her Oral History project and several of the twelve villagers whose memories she had recorded, were at the show. It was a joyous talk which generated laughter and tears in equal measures. Later, John Freeborne gave an erudite, illustrated talk on the history of Holy Trinity church during which even the Rector, Matthew Lawson, learnt some new information. Matthew closed the talk with a few words about the community benefits that inheriting custodianship of this wonderful edifice continues to generate.

Villagers and visitors alike flocked into the newly redecorated community hall to enjoy viewing and discussing the finds on display which included a huge variety of Roman coins, pottery, brooches, buckles and paraphernalia which had been discovered by archaeologists at formal digs as well as amateur metal detectorists. An expert from Suffolk Archaeology was on hand to identify and date visitor’s treasures in the style of the Antiques Roadshow. Clay pipes were on sale together with history books and copies of ancient maps of the immediate area and much else besides.

Free tea, coffee and biscuits were provided to the hundreds of visitors in the cafe room where the LM Football Club (one of the oldest in the country) had also provided a huge display of photos from bygone season’s right up to the present day.

New member Jan Hood said that the day had exceeded everyone’s expectations. Membership had received a massive boost, the coffers had been enhanced with donations, sales and raffle revenue and the profile of the club had been raised. Most of all, the hard work of the LMHAS Committee had produced a day of joy, fun and interest of which the whole village could be justifiably proud.

The result of these celebrations was that at the first meeting of the season, the room at the Old School was full to capacity with visitors and members, including many that had recently joined. Faye Minter, Senior Archaeologist at Suffolk County Council spoke to a full house on ‘Long Melford – Prehistoric to Anglo Saxon’.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 21st November at 7.30pm when Emma Harpur will speak on Gainsborough, his life, his house and the future at the Old School Community Centre. As we reach the turn in the seasons, with nights drawing in and the mornings becoming crisp, attentions inevitably shift to preparing for the colder months ahead. For many South Suffolk residents this results in a call to the oil companies for a pre-emptive tank top-up. Concerningly, following recent attacks on some of Saudi Arabia’s major oil facilities, we may see a sustained oil price spike that could impact local households.

These attacks, which are currently attributed to drone strikes, are a timely reminder of the way in which international events often impact our daily lives.

At ďŹ rst the Iranian-backed Houthi rebel movement based in Yemen claimed responsibility for the strikes, but attention has since focused on Iran itself as a more credible instigator. Whoever is found responsible, one point I observed in relation to coverage of this important story is how discussion of knock-on effects is always directed at motorists. That is entirely understandable, since higher oil prices will mean dearer petrol and in a constituency like South Suffolk most households still depend on cars.

Nevertheless, it is interesting how commentators never seem to mention heating oil. This is an unfashionable old technology but one that many households – including my own – rely on in rural parts of the county because of legacy heating kit that is far from easy to replace. So whilst it is crucial to get the foreign policy right in this matter, there are also huge implications for our commitment to net zero carbon emissions, which must involve ďŹ nding new affordable and practical ways to heat period homes that are not connected to mains gas. The very fact of having a ďŹ nite tank makes one vulnerable to price spikes.

Of course, oil prices uctuate constantly and it might be that by the time your next kerosene top up is due markets will have calmed. Either way, the episode is a reminder of how much we still rely on oil, and the wider reward that would come from truly weaning us off it: greater self-reliance, reducing our susceptibility to unpredictable events far from home.

Rotary Club of Sudbury A cream tea was the theme of the last Rotary meeting in September, when President David Lowe and his wife Anne invited members to their house for a most enjoyable afternoon tea, and plenty of opportunity to socialise.

Now, as the summer begins to fade from our memories, members of Sudbury Rotary are looking forward to probably their most hectic time of year, as arrangements are being progressed for the Schools Christmas Concert, visits by Father Christmas and the annual Christmas Tree Festival in St Peter’s, now in its seventeenth year.

Trees for the festival will be provided by the Rotary Club and local organisations are invited to decorate a tree to showcase their activities. Charities, businesses, schools, churches are all welcome to take part, and it is hoped this year to find enough space for 100 trees. Trees arrive on Tuesday 3 December and may be decorated from 10 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. that day.

Trees are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so anyone wish to take part is invited to contact Malcolm Offord via the Rotary Club number (07787 470876) as soon as possible to request a booking form. The cost per tree is £16 for noncommercial exhibitors and £30 for commercial enterprises.

The festival is open from Wednesday 4 December to Sunday 8 December and provides a magical start for the festive season with hundreds of adults and children visiting the event.

All proceeds from the Christmas Tree Festival will go to the Club for distribution to local charities, which this year include Success After Stroke and the Sudbury Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

Our programme of talks for the coming month or so include speakers from Foxearth Nature Reserve on 21 October and Mary’s Meals on 4 November. Anyone who would like to come along and hear these talks is invited to attend Rotary lunch from 12.30 p.m. on Mondays at The Mill Hotel, but are asked to leave a message on the Club telephone (07787 470876) so that lunch can be booked for you.

The REG group continues with their fortnightly meetings on Monday evenings, in a local pub for about an hour. Phone Mags (07557 235858) to find out when and where they will be meeting.

A lot has been said about politicians; some of it complimentary, but most of it accurate!

Who are we?

Our mis-named Charity Sector is fast losing all credibility. Thousands of well-meaning and dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to raise funds to help their fellows in need. Whether standing in our streets peddling badges and poppies, transporting their neighbours to hospital, managing food banks, sponsored walks and freely giving of their time. Apparently we now have over 168,000 registered charities in Britain, which alone proves that with such a need successive governments have failed (despite ever increasing taxation) in their duty of care. We should be so proud that within our small island so many, of all races, religions and beliefs still care for their less fortunate fellows. Yet whilst this army of volunteers puts duty before self the Charity Industry (for that is what it is) now provides a career structure of both greed and corruption. Over 32 of our top charity bosses trouser in excess of £200,000 a year, plus the inevitable pension rights and allowances. One of the greediest TOÒ FEEDÒ FROMÒ THEÒ TROUGH Ò THEÒ BOSSÒ OFÒ THEÒ .UFµELDÒ4RUSTÒ POCKETSÒ INÒ excess of £700,000. All this whilst our ever generous (with our money) council offer charity shops up to 75% rates reduction when their neighbouring small traders suffer excessive demand. All well and good when charity shops just peddled donated items but today sell the same imported new merchandise as the small trader who µNDSÒITÒIMPOSSIBLEÒTOÒCOMPETEÒONÒSUCHÒANÒUNEVENÒPLAYINGÒµELD Ò!Ò Royal Commission, properly independent, should be established as a matter of urgency to investigate our currently unchecked “Charity 3ECTORi Ò#URRENTLYÒTHISÒINDUSTRYÒISÒANÒAFFRONTÒTOÒTHOSEÒWHOÒGIVEÒSOÒ freely of their time.

Now you are going to love this! I know I promised to give Babergh DC a break but their latest costly vanity project is so laughable as to be worthy of comment. The Leader of the Council (actually penned BYÒ HISÒ EXCESSIVELYÒ SALARIEDÒ GRANDLYÒ TITLEDÒ h#HIEFÒ %XECUTIVEiÒ LITTLEÒ Arfur) is to meet on 22nd October to discuss a proposal to change ITSÒDISCREDITEDÒNAMEÒFROMÒ"ABERGHÒTOÒh3OUTHÒ3UFFOLKi Ò!PPARENTLYÒ no one, particularly in Suffolk, knows where the hell Babergh is and even struggle to pronounce it. The accompanying report titled h8888iÒMAKESÒLAUGHABLEÒREADINGÒANDÒCANÒONLYÒHAVEÒBEENÒPREPAREDÒ by one trousering an excessive salary and a degree in the works of Hans Christian Anderson. Obviously this body, having achieved absolutely nothing for the good of Sudbury and surrounding populace since its inception in the seventies, thinks rebranding a positive step. The cost they say? Only £10,000. Well having sold OFFÒ ENOUGHÒ ASSETSÒ INCLUDINGÒ THEÒ (ADLEIGHÒ OFµCES Ò WELLÒ AFFORDABLE Ò (OWEVER Ò WITHÒ RESIGNINGÒ OFÒ VEHICLESÒ ANDÒ OFµCES Ò CUPBOARDSÒ FULLÒ OFÒ new stationery, redesigning of websites and possible new chains of /FµCEÒMETHINKSÒAÒRIDICULOUSÒWASTEÒOFÒTIMEÒANDÒMONEY Ò3URELYÒTHEÒ efforts of our Councillors (min. But if only our politicians and the chattering classes were of the same bent! Watching MPs (without a statesman among them) bickering like a pack of baboons is not only unedifying but an affront to those great Britons of stature we once respected. Please, can we not even discuss the greatest decision of our times without childish name calling, the throwing of dummies, physical threats and with a pint rather than a placard in hand?

Sports fans queued for autographs from former England cricket captain Allan Lamb during a family barbecue and fun afternoon at Hadleigh Nursing Home A stream of families arrived from the town for the event which took place in bright afternoon sunshine on Saturday 21 September.

Mr Lamb, who played nearly 80 Test matches for England, visited the home in Friars Road ahead of his appearance in the evening at the Hadleigh Cricket Club Awards presentation. Mr Lamb chatted to staff, residents and visitors and Allan Lamb with signed photographs; the first six Roy Plumbly and visitors received a free signed cricket Home Manager Tracey Burt ball.

Signed cricket bats were two of the prizes in a raffle supporting Hadleigh High School student Maisie Button who has been raising money by making craft items to pay for her trip to Belize with other children from the school. They will be involved in projects to help villagers in the Central American country. There was a free barbecue and garden games for children including target football, crazy golf and skittles; a bouncy castle proved very popular.

Children’s entertainer Josh, from J and J Entertainments, provided disco music and lots of extra fun and games. There was also live music from local string group Trills and Frills, and a performance by Diamond Lites Majorettes.

Hadleigh Nursing Home manager Tracey Burt said: “We were delighted Allan came along to help us celebrate our second anniversary. We have come a long way since we opened on the site of the old Friars Hall nursing home and are thrilled by our glowing CQC report. One of our regular respite residents, Clifford Rush, is a big cricket fan and loved talking to Allan who presented him with a signed hat. One of our current residents, Peter Swallow, is also a cricket fan and enjoyed meeting one of his sporting heroes.”

Following his appearance at the barbecue, Mr Lamb was guest of honour at Hadleigh Cricket Club’s awards night which was sponsored by Kingsley Healthcare, which operates Hadleigh Nursing Home. The company’s IT and marketing director Wasantha Darshana introduced Mr Lamb at the event ahead of a question and answer session with club chairman and Radio Suffolk cricket hour host Dave Mann. Mr Lamb recalled his Ashes’ exploits in Australia, including the experience of sharing a room and playing alongside cricket legend Ian Botham.

Sudbury Library This month along with all the regular activities and groups we are focusing on the first Suffolk Libraries day. Being held on Saturday 12th October all Libraries in Suffolk are celebrating everything our libraries do for their communities. All Suffolk Libraries will all have their own events and activities on the day. Sudbury Library is no exception. We have several activities and events going on throughout the day.

Family Scavenger hunt around town, £1 entry – Solve the clues and discover things you never knew about Sudbury and win a family prize!!

Author visit – 6pm, hosted by the Friends of Sudbury Library. Local Author Michelle Hockley will be here discussing her book– Before Spring Came Summer. Tickets are £5 each.

Finally, we have a new shared reading project just started. Launched in other parts of the country already, the Reader together with Suffolk Libraries, Suffolk Community Foundation & Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner have developed the Shared Reading project in Suffolk. It runs every Wednesday from 2:00pm – 3:30pm. A friendly, social, informal and relaxing session to share your thoughts and feelings about life through reading. The stories and poems are chosen by the volunteers and members of the group. why not come along and give it go.

This little CHAPÒ LOVESÒ HISÒ WALKÒ ANDÒ ISÒ µNEÒ with dogs his own size but afraid of bigger dogs. He would best suit an adult only household or maybe one with older children only. We also have Boris, a friendly Bedlington cross, only eighteen months old. He would do well with a hearing companion dog as he is deaf. Lady is a friendly, two year old female crossbreed. She needs an active owner as she is full of energy, would do well at agility and should be the only pet.

As the days grow shorter we spend less time in the garden but there is something interesting going on in the shed. The fundraisers are busy sorting goods for the £1 Sale and they always include lots of doggy treats so I think it’s time they were supervised by me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

For the first stage of the review, the Liberal Democrat, Green and Independent Group submitted a proposal to keep councillor numbers in Suffolk at a minimum of 75, with the potential for an increase to 80. The Conservative and Labour Groups submitted a joint proposal asking for a reduction to 70 councillors. The next stage of the review will determine the new division boundaries and will include two public consultations. The review is expected to be completed by July 2020.

New model for specialist speech and language education The Cabinet has agreed a new model for the provision of specialist speech and language education services.

The model focuses on early intervention and diagnosis, by training early years and primary school staff to identify speech and language needs and providing a specialist outreach service to schools. For children with the most complex needs, a new “Communication and Interaction” education pathway has been established for children aged 4 to 16 years, consisting of specialist units and new special schools. This will replace the current speech and language units which only cater for 5 to 7 year olds.

Carbon strategy agreed Following the council’s declaration of a climate emergency in March, the Cabinet has now agreed a strategic framework for meeting its commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The report clearly states that in order to be effective, measures to cut carbon and mitigate climate change will need to be made across every department. It also includes a renewed commitment to become the Greenest County.

A cross-party policy development panel will begin in September, tasked with investigating how the council can meet its objectives and what investment is needed to ensure the council is carbon neutral by 2030.

Sudbury Care Home Crowned Olympics Champion Red House Residential Home in Sudbury has been crowned 2019 Suffolk Care Home Olympics champions. They beat 38 other care homes from across the county to win the title.

October’s Advice Column My mum has a non-visible disability, which causes her walking difficulties. I heard something on the news about how she may now be eligible for a blue badge.

How can I find out about this and help her apply?

On 30 August, the Blue Badge scheme was extended to people who live in England and have non-visible disabilities or conditions which affect their ability to walk. As a result, your mother may now qualify for a badge.

Your mother will be automatically eligible if she gets certain types of benefits.

These include some categories of Personal Independence Payment and the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance.

If she’s not automatically eligible she can still apply for a badge. Her local authority will use evidence from doctors and other healthcare professionals to determine whether she qualifies or not.

Your mother can check her eligibility and apply for a local authority-issued Blue Badge at gov.uk/apply-blue-badge. If she can’t do this herself, you can apply on her behalf.

You’ll need a recent digital passport-style photo, proof of her identity, address, details of any benefits she receives, her National Insurance number, and evidence of how her non-visible disability or condition affects her mobility.

Newton Green Ladies Open

Newton Green captain Cate Fraser with prizewinners at the club’s highly-successful ladies open.

The annual ladies open at Newton Green proved to be highly successful, with a full field of visitors from Suffolk and Essex clubs.

Captain Cate Fraser said the club received an unprecented number of messages of congratulations after the event.

The many flattering written comments, included “Be proud of your lovely club...your commitment and passion shows,” and “We would not care if we didn’t score if only to return for your fab food.”

Cate added: “It is very flattering and rewarding to receive such feed back, and reflects on the way our club has been going this year with record green fees and society numbers.”

During the day £230 was raised for St Nicholas Hospice and winner of the team award was Kingfisher (formerly Crettingham).
