We’re delighted that local kitchen company KSL kitchens has created a special Kitchen Theatre Demo Stage for the festival which will be hosted throughout the day by the ICE Café & Cookery School.

Joining us at the festival, as always, will be local chefs, bakers and butchers that we all want to celebrate and enjoy and it’s an excellent line up this year:- Will Wooster and his dad Simon, owner and head baker at Woosters Bakery gives us top tips for baking bread and sourdoughs at home. Anthony Gellard, head butcher at Hollow Trees Farm Shop gives us a butchery class working with lamb and Greg Strolenberg, owner and head butcher at Lavenham Butchers gives us a masterclass in Muntjac butchery. We are also looking forward to welcoming great local chefs as follows:- Alan Paton, head chef at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa John Jackaman, owner and head chef at Ice Cafe & Cook School Greig Young, head chef at The Northgate, Bury St Eds Sam Sturman, head chef at The Rattlesden Arms Matt Avery, head chef at The Swan at Lavenham There’s something for all the family.

The festival has always attracted all the family to attend and there is something for everyone this year. As well as all the street food and drinks (including those for kids) plus ice creams, we have also arranged for Hollow Trees to bring a little part of their farm trail so children will be encouraged to learn about local agriculture and meet some farm animals.

Plus let those kids get their hands dirty with free pottery sessions with Kiln Cottage Pottery – there will be clay activities all day in their gazebo.

Music of course will be provided by our resident busker Nigel Ashcroft who will be playing a selection of sounds throughout the day.

This will be my final Mayor’s Report that I write, however will continue to scribble away at my “Facts from the Past” column which I thoroughly enjoy compiling. This last year has been exhausting, interesting and full of lasting memories. It has been an honour to serve our wonderful town of Sudbury for the third time, a first for a woman. I could not have managed this without my superb secretary Teresa Elford, she has been Mayor’s Secretary for about thirty-five years. Teresa is an absolute gem, her knowledge of the history of our town, procedures and protocols are outstanding. I am certain that whoever is elected to take my place will be in safe hands. A huge thank you to Teresa’s mother who has laundered and starched my neckerchief and arm-cuffs for me again as she did in previous years. She has that special touch. I am also so thankful for the support I have received from June Freeman, a friend and neighbour and retired Headteacher of Hillside Special School, who has been an excellent Consort, accompanying me to so many events and ceremonies. June is an expert now with helping me put the chain on, not an easy task!

April has been quite busy, visiting various organisations and meeting so many volunteers, without these gifted, dedicated people this town would grind to a halt. I was delighted to join with the High Sheriff Edward Creasy when he came to Sudbury to give the High Sheriff’s Award to Chris Boatright, who has run the Kernos Centre for ten years. Enabling so many to have counselling when needed, not having to wait many vital months for an N.H.S. appointment. Chris is the most amazing woman, who is always reluctant to receive the praise she deserves. The Trustees of The Christopher Centre said farewell and thanks to Teresa Bishop this month for all the sterling work she has been doing again for many years. Teresa, although retiring she will still be cooking and running the Monday Lunches at the Christopher Centre and the singing group that meet every Tuesday evening. A truly dedicated, wonderful lady. I had the privilege of going to a Blue Sapphire Wedding Anniversary Party for an amazing couple of friends, Jo and Ian Fitzlyon, I just love talking to this amazing couple. Yet again I was invited by the Stour Valley Lodge to celebrate their England and St George Celebrations, wonderfully organised as always with the usual songs, hymns and renditions. I will never forget the first time I was their guest, when I was asked to draw the raffle ticket and drew my own, the probability of that must have been about 120/1. This year they kindly donated £220 for one of my charities “Compassion “. My special thanks to the Master of Ceremonies Bro. Anthony Lyster and The Worshipful Master John Warner who looked after me so well and presented me with a fascinating book written by Peter Thorogood S1257-007-PlantHope-SCN-95x135mm.indd 1 11/04/2022 Complimentary on the History of the Stour Lodge and the men that moulded a town, it was interesting to

Good Friday was very busy indeed starting with seeing the start of the Sudbury Fun Run and handing out the trophies, then off to the Rowing Club to hoist their flag for the Scan the QR start of the rowing season. Hadleigh Show 21st May at Holbecks Park

The show is almost here and we are in the very final mapping stages of getting back after a long 2 years. Tradestands and food exhibitors are exceeding 200, entries in all classes stand at just over 600 across the showground. Record numbers of sheep entered will mean there is plenty to witness in the sheep rings and with plenty of cattle, donkeys and horses also entered, the rings will be buzzing across the showground.

Showground preparation is well under way with the first grass cut being taken this week and the work will continue to iron out any lumps and bumps. The “superhighway” is tidy, clear and ready for the traffic so we are almost good to go.

Across the showground we have so much to entertain starting with our lovely friends at Stocks Fair opening on Friday night from 6pm-11pm, for show visitors all day and evening on Saturday and from 12pm-5pm on Sunday. Alongside them we have our education area, a countryside ring with machinery old and new, the Sheep Show and Dog and “Not” Duck Show, moving up through the shopping and tradestands towards Rural Crafts, Horticulture and Floral Art. The Cookery Theatre has displays throughout the day, plus the Art Show, Grand Ring, Presidents Ring, Food Hall and together with livestock and equine we should have something for everyone.

Solicitors comment on new no-fault divorce law

Since the 6th April 2022, separating married couples have been able to divorce without one party having to allege fault. The timescales for divorcing a spouse and the ability for one spouse to obstruct a divorce have also changed.

Previously, for a couple to divorce, one person was required to accept responsibility for the relationship breaking down. Or, if neither person was willing to accept responsibility, they must have been separated for a period of two years (where both individuals agree to the divorce) or five years (where one spouse does not agree to the divorce). Other than in the event of extended separation, this means one party accepting that they have committed adultery, behaved unreasonably, or have disserted the other.

For many years campaigners have demanded changes to divorce law, recognising that many couples simply drift apart; that no one party is to blame for the relationship breaking down, or that both spouses mutually and amicably want to separate.

Since April 2022, divorcing couples are now not required to apportion blame or wait a period of two or five years of separation to pass to be able to commence divorce proceedings. Under the changes, couples will now be able to apply for a divorce simply because their marriage has broken down, paving the way for a mutually agreed and amicable divorce process.

In situations where the divorce is not amicable or mutually agreed, the new legislation will also remove the ability for one spouse to prevent the other from divorcing them and in these and other cases will provide for reducing the time it takes to formally divorce, compared to the previous legislation.

Platinum Jubilee Charity Ball Although there is still a month to go before Jubilee events begin, here is early notice of a very special Jubilee Ball planned for Friday 3 June, from 7.30 until 10.30 p.m. at Sudbury’s Masonic Hall in North Street.

It is some time since a Ball has taken place in Sudbury, so this is an opportunity for all those dancers to come along and enjoy an evening of Ballroom, Latin and Sequence Dancing (50/50) led by Andrea and Roy. In the middle of the evening there will be a special guest appearance by the Hot Jazz Quartet, The Djangoliers, providing swing jive music, certainly for foot-tapping but maybe also for some lively dancing!

An invitation is extended to come along in your smart suits and ‘posh frocks’ and celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A licensed bar will be available at The Masonic Hall, which has a superb dance floor, and there will be a free raffle.

A number of Jubilee Events have been planned by Sudbury Market Town Partnership, starting with the Ball and then moving to the Hive Community Hub as a venue for an organ recital on Saturday 4 June, some lunchtime concerts, a talk from Mark Billls about the development work at Gainsborough’s House, and a drawing day led by a professional artist.

More details will be available on posters and flyers nearer the end of May. These Jubilee events have been sponsored by SB Surveyors and BFP Wealth Management, both of Sudbury, and by a generous grant from Babergh/MidSuffolk District Councils The East of England Co-op has donated raffle prizes.

Proceeds from these events will be shared between Hive and the Sudbury Partnership, local charities which offer activities and projects to benefit their community.

‘Sibarita’ – Spain’s Organic Larder Introduces New Products The product range of ‘Sibarita’ will soon, for the first time include fish products: preserved tuna and anchovies from Arroyabe, a leading Spanish producer for over 100 years. These are not the products generally available from supermarkets in the UK! So, what are they?

There are two sub-species: White Tuna, also known as Bonito del Norte or Albacore and Yellow Tuna. They are caught in summer in the Basque Gulf of Biscay using traditional, ecological “pole, line and hook” methods not resulting in the unintentional catch of other species or damage to the seabed.

Both have excellent flavours with Yellow Tuna having a slightly stronger flavour and more colour.

They are prepared by hand, one by one, in the traditional way, and packed carefully, manually, in large pieces into glass jars, normally preserved in olive oil, which results in the smooth texture and flavour. The endresult is a high-quality product that looks as good as it tastes.

“Sibarita” offers a lower-calory option with tuna preserved in water, an interesting alternative in salads as the customer can chose the dressing to use. Another healthy choice is low-salt white tuna.

Councillor Jessica Carter reports: Spring has finally arrived. It’s getting warmer and lighter but street lighting is still an issue for many. The LED Street Lighting replacements in Sudbury are progressing well, As of the start of April SCC has replaced 828 lights with approximately a further 200 standard lights to replace, these are mainly on footpaths or harder to reach places that require a different access method from the standard vehicle-mounted hoist, there is a separate team following on behind the main teams picking up these more awkward lanterns. There will then be approximately 170 heritage style units to replace so all works should be completed well before the end of 2022.

I have highlighted to the lighting team of broken lights that I know of such as Humphry Road, Bulmer Road etc. If there are any others, I would urge residents to flag them to me so I can ensure they are fixed asap.

At the April full Town Council Meeting, a member of the public raised concerns over the state of our roads and pathways in Sudbury. I would like to remind residents that they can use the Suffolk County Council highways tool online to report issues they are having or please do get in touch with me using my contact details below and I will report the issues on your behalf.

Although the cost-of-living crisis is affecting most households within the UK, I have had many conversations with residents who are struggling with everincreasing prices of food, fuel, council tax, and other necessities. On the 6th of April, I attended a cost of a living crisis meeting to see if I, as a councillor could help the residents of Sudbury. I have since applied for a place on the Cost-ofLiving Alliance to help in the best way I can. If anyone is having difficulties, I would urge them to contact the CAB to see if they can direct you to support such as food bank referrals and help with energy debts, or contact me and I will point you in the right direction of an agency that may be able to help.

I have been very fortunate over the past month to meet with charities such as ActivGardens (ActivLives ) and the Eden Rose Coppice, both of which are doing amazing work with green spaces in Sudbury. If you have an organisation you would like me to visit please get in touch, I am happy to promote your activities, request for volunteers and help with financial support where I can. There is so much going on in Sudbury, let’s show it off!

Introduce Little Ways to Plant Hope Our ‘Plant Hope’ campaign aims to help our customers find little ways to become more sustainable to help change for a better future. We have lots of information in store and online, full of tips and advice on small things we can do to make a big difference in supporting the environment.

Here are our five top tips: 1. Attract Bees and Butterflies

By creating pollinator friendly spaces within our gardens we can help support vulnerable populations while enjoying better harvests. Pollinating insects require two things in order to survive: food (nectar and pollen) and shelter. All we need to do as gardeners is simply use pollinator friendly plants.

With continual population growth and climate change, it is becoming more important to think about conserving water wherever possible. 3rd Sudbury Scout Group has been giving the young people of Sudbury opportunities for over 100 years. We offer scouting to boys and girls aged 6 – 18. Our weekly meetings enable them to develop skills for life as individuals and as members of the community.

The Beavers, our youngest section, have been working to design an Easter chick for the display at St Peters. Our Cubs have been practising their archery skills, learning how to administer first aid and have been making bird boxes. Our Sea Scouts have been camping, enjoying hiking and kayaking.

The Group is run entirely by volunteers. The Leaders and Helpers work enthusiastically to co-ordinate an excellent programme of Scouting, whilst an Executive Committee manage the assets and finance. We are lucky to have our own HQ, which was built 30 years ago by the river in Sudbury.

We are always keen to welcome new helpers into the Group, so whether you are keen on the outdoors and water sports, or feel your skills are more suited to management, there will be an opening for you to join us as a volunteer.

We are currently looking to recruit a Group Scout Leader to manage and support the Leaders in delivering the activities and to ensure the Group runs effectively and provides a challenging, exciting and balanced programme.

As with all charities we have to raise funds to allow us to deliver our activities, so we are looking for an Events Co-ordinator to help with fund raising, help us recruit new Leaders and Helpers and broaden our engagement with parents and the community.

Churches Conservation Trust Angelic Artwork at St Peter’s, Sudbury The Churches Conservation Trust (CCT), the national heritage charity protecting historic churches at risk, has installed an engaging piece of public artwork on the hoardings at St Peter’s Cultural Venue, which is currently undergoing a major multi-million pound project to repair and regenerate this key site in the town of Sudbury.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and working with local artist and sign writer Wayne Tanswell, the artwork, representing two large angel wings, is designed to inspire community participation.

Commenting on the artwork, Alli Burke, CCT Development Officer said “St Peter’s sits right at the heart of the town, and as it is currently closed for the major project, and surrounded by necessary hoardings, we wanted to provide an opportunity for the community and visitors to have a bit of fun by interacting with this beautiful public artwork created by Wayne”.

Wayne Tanswell added “It has been a great experience working collaboratively on this piece with Alli. Her enthusiasm for St Peter’s and community engagement is contagious, and I hope that people will really enjoy what we’ve created together”.

The wings are embellished with the words of a sonnet written by the late Peter Ainsworth, former Chair of Trustees at the Churches Conservation Trust. The sonnet was written in response to the lockdowns in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, which meant that churches were completely closed for the first time since WW2. Alli Burke said “These poignant words really ring true in the context of the temporary closure of St Peter’s, albeit for different reasons”.

Sudbury Mayor, Sue Ayres, (pictured) was the first to rise to the challenge, lastto celebrate their own ‘living and now members of *While the publicstocks are invited angels’, whether that be a friend or family member, by photographing them in front of the wings and sharing the photographs online using the hashtag #SudburyAngels. These will be collated and included in an online exhibition in the future.

Following the completion of Phase 1 capital work to the building, the 7 Lady Lane Industrial Estate, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 6BQ CCT is also pleased to announce that following a robust tender process, Universal Stone Limited have been appointed to undertake Phase 2 of the work at St Peter’s. While the CCT has been busy delivering schools learning sessions and community engagement work over the past month or so, very shortly people will see external activity on site really pick up.

“As building conservation specialists, we are proud to be part of this exciting restoration project which will see not only vital repairs to the historic fabric as well as transforming the interior spaces through a range of physical improvements, ensuring a new dynamic historical interpretation and widened audience reach for a sustainable future.

Our dedicated team of craftspeople and construction specialists are looking forward to sharing the restoration journey with the local community through hands-on heritage craft skills workshops, hard hat tours of the works-in-progress, social engagements, and apprenticeship programme.

All being well with this ambitious project, St Peter’s is scheduled to reopen in 2023.”

Kernos centre is recruiting The Kernos Centre registered charity in Friars Street, was recently honoured to be awarded the Group of the Year Award by the High Sheriff of Suffolk, Edward Creasy.

He expressed his personal thanks to everyone at Kernos, “especially to counsellors and volunteers, who provide an exceptional service, which is essential for the health and wellbeing of those who are in need”.

For over 19 years Kernos has provided this service, of professional counselling & psychotherapy to local people in need, particularly to those not provided for through statutory provision, and who have no means of financing counselling support. All of Kernos’ work is focused on improving the mental health of the adults, children and young people that are referred to them by Schools, G.P’s, Social Services, Children’s Centres, individuals, families, etc. Over this time Kernos has received over 4,500 referrals, for both face to face sessions at the Centre and online sessions.

With the ever-increasing demands for its services, and two long standing therapists retiring, the waiting list for support is getting longer. Therefore, the Kernos Centre is looking for two new fully qualified Counsellors to join the clinical team. These vacancies are part-time and for therapists who are qualified to work with adults and Young People.

Advice Column for May

I am a single parent, with two young children. I am already struggling to stay on top of my household bills; my weekly food shop isn’t stretching as far any more and now my energy bill is going up too. I don’t know how I’m going to afford all of these price rises. What can I do to stop my finances spiralling out of control?

First of all, you are not alone in this and there’s support to help you.

It’s always worth checking if there are benefits you don’t know about that you’re eligible for, including support with your energy costs and living costs. On the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk, there’s a benefits calculator, advice on how to reduce living costs and information on other ways to increase your income.

There’s also emergency support that you may have access to, such as food bank vouchers or fuel vouchers. You could contact your local council to see if they could also offer support.

The final donation sent to the Red Cross to support their work in Ukraine was £1,870, as members added to the amount donated from the street collection in March.

The work of Rotary in providing medical supplies to the people of Ukraine continues and now Peole at the Charter Night. funding has been announced to support Ukrainian Refugees in the UK by providing disaster grants for any families being hosted by residents here. These grants will be managed by the Foundation team and will be available to any club that has refugees in its area who require assistance. The money cannot be used for accommodation or food, but for items such as a pushchair, more clothing, a ‘phone and sim card, etc. These items would be purchased by the local Rotary club on behalf of the Foundation for those in need.

So, if any families in the Sudbury area are hosting refugees from Ukraine they are invited to get in touch with Sudbury Rotary, email info@ sudburyrotary.com, or leave a message on the Club telephone (07341 290415). Our member Tony Willson will be co-ordinating the funding applications.

During April, over 50 people attended the Club’s Charter Night (birthday) dinner at The Masonic Hall in Sudbury, when current President, Gloria Woods and immediate Past President Sandra Armitage, jointly hosted the evening. They chose an entertaining way of highlighting some members of the Club and the work they do, based on surnames. At the end of the evening, great fun was provided by Doreen Potter, from Billericay, offering stories and poetry in the style of Joyce Grenfell, to much hilarity and applause.

Crucial Crew will be taking place during May when over 750 primary school children will find out more about how to keep themselves safe and how to deal with emergency situations. This may well be the last occasion when Sudbury Rotary is able to organise Crucial Crew, but we sincerely hope that another organisation will take on this important activity, as it prepares young people for dealing with situations in the wider world.

Early May will see the Club’s AGM, when we review what has been another challenging year for so many people, and the Rotary month will close with a wine-tasting in Maria and Peter’s garden on 27 May. Looking ahead, the Club will be supporting a young person to go on a week’s training at Grafham Water in Cambridgeshire, as part of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.

With Covid restrictions easing, members are now meeting regularly faceto-face for lunch twice each month, once again enjoying the fellowship and fun which they have as part of their involvement with Sudbury Rotary Club.

Pat’s Datz Owt As I write, what a weird world we do live in, - one minute lovely sunshine, the next it is SNOWING!, after the lovely days of sunshine we have been having.

We had our first 5 day holiday last month, which all went quite well for our visit to the Peak District, and we were lucky with the weather for March.

Our next holiday 4 days ( Fri - Mon ) is when we go to see Kynren, as well as visit Durham and Beemish in September. Kynren is AWESOME, over 1,000 local people of all ages, including children, take part, out doors, telling the story of 2,000 years of English History. It starts daylight, ends in the dark, and finishes with fireworks. Still a few seats available for that, but will soon have to close that one. At school I HATED HISTORY, but thoroughly enjoyed every second of this show.
