Sudbury’s dogs compete at the Rotary Club’s Virtual Show

April was a busy month for members of Sudbury Rotary, with several activities, including a street collection on April 1st which, on a bitterly cold morning and in a town centre almost empty of people, raised £132.24. This will be added to funds raised for Sudbury Rotary charities supported this year: The Kernos Centre and St Nicholas Hospice.

Judging took place for the virtual dog show. From more than 50 entries, it was difficult to choose the winners and the highly commended for Cutest, Saddest, Scruffiest, Best Dressed and Funniest. Just look at the winners’ photographs. Funds raised from the event will be added to donations for Kernos and St Nicholas Hospice.

Two entries were received from local students for the Photographic competition and their entries have now been passed on to the Rotary District judging panel.

At a recent on-line meeting, our guest speaker was one of this year’s Global Grant Scholars: Cerise Siamof, from Wisconsin in the USA. Originally planning to become a doctor, Cerise decided that, first, she should explore many things that influence health and how people access, use, and benefit from health care. She also worked about 20 hours a week in the Emergency Room at her local hospital in Madison, where she witnessed the impact that lack of primary and preventive care has on community health and saw how disparate is health care in the United States. continued page 2

Cerise had already spent two months doing full time research at the University of Cambridge over the summer of 2019, and said she had fallen in love with the city and the UK. It was because of that experience that she applied for the MPhil in Health, Medicine, and Society, and at Trinity College she is focusing her studies on sociology and philosophy and has already written three essays, including one on the artificially intelligent supercomputer ‘Watson’, which has the potential to become a decision-maker in clinics.

This is problematic because it disrupts the ability to allocate responsibility, and Cerise believes we should be cautious about the use of such technologies in the future. Her dissertation will be on whether current rules on how health care is rationed should be reconsidered.

Hers was a thought-provoking talk, demonstrating that, in medicine, there is so much that goes beyond the biomedical view, which is relevant to so many contemporary issues; the different factors that come into play and the many tensions that exist. Listening to people such as Cerise expressing her views based on the results of her research and then looking critically at these gives hope for the future and particularly if people like her succeed in having an influence on public policy.

A further street collection is planned for 6 May, with the proceeds again being shared between Kernos and St Nicholas Hospice and, on 11 May at the Club Assembly, members will learn more about plans for the year ahead under its new President, Gloria Woods.

Rotary members are looking forward to being able to resume face-to-face meetings, maybe just for tea and buns to start with(!), as well as resuming more formal meetings over lunch. As always, an invitation is extended to anyone who might perhaps wish to become involved in projects to benefit our community, and make new friends – come and meet us and find out more!

Now because we are in the ‘Purdah’ period, which is the period just prior to an election when certain restrictions apply, I like all other Councillors and those standing for election cannot use public finances or services to influence the outcome of an election. What does ‘Purdah’ mean and where did it originate from, India’s Muslims and later adopted by Hindus is where it originated and refers to the ‘seclusion of Women from Public observation, meaning the wearing of concealing clothes including a veil.

Now you may ask what’s that to do with elections or the using of public funds, I’m afraid I am not the one to answer that question, only to say it was introduced at the conclusion of the second world war, I cannot tell you why it was introduced, only to say, today it is quite rightly considered to be sexist and reeks a bit of colonialism, the term ‘pre-election period is now preferred.

Unfortunately, this year I have been prevented from running charity events or holding coffee mornings which many will remember I was able to hold during my previous two terms as Mayor, this means that I have been unable to generate additional funds to provide support for my chosen local charities, The Befriending Scheme, The Bridge Project, Mayors Benevolent Fund and The Kernos Centre. All of these charities are truly local and provide a source of support to the local community and deserve all of our support in these difficult times, we will never know when we or our families may require their help.

Finally, as my period of Mayor comes to an end, so does my period as Sudbury’s County Councillor. I would like to thank all those who supported me over this period and can I assure you that although I could not resolve all of your problems, I can promise you I did my best, if there is one bit of advice I can give to my successor(s) it is, that the problems that the community ask for your help on, in their eyes, are the most important, regardless of your own views it is they who have asked for your support.

That’s it for now, stay safe, we’re nearly there, don’t let’s spoil it, we’ll get back to normal soon.

Tomlinson Groundcare – we will miss the shows this year In a normal year May is one of our busiest months, exhibiting at the South Suffolk, Hadleigh and Suffolk Show, we haven’t missed one since the company started in 1991. The planning starts well in advance, preparing the machinery before the day and making sure everything is spotless, then fingers crossed for good weather. We have experienced everything from heat waves to snow and gales over the years!

This is the second year without the shows at the moment, understandably organisers had to make the difficult decision to cancel them well in advance to avoid unnecessary costs.

It is a shame as the communities miss out on the opportunity of meeting local exhibitors, visiting the craft tents and the food halls. Families love seeing the various animals and exhibits and it is a good educational day out and there is always a good feeling of being part of something bigger.

Tomlinson Groundcare are keen supporters of the local shows and can participate in up to ten per year which provide the opportunity to catch up with friends, existing customers and meet potential new ones as well as help raise money for good causes.

It also provides the chance for people to have a chat and see our extensive range of lawnmowers and of course our popular toy selection.

Just Talk 2019 has been a vital constituent in the Sudbury, Suffolk community.Their service has been in high demand in light of the global pandemic and the negative effects it has had on many individuals.

Fortunately for those who have been struggling, Just Talk 2019 was able to remain open and provide their services to those in desperate need. On the contrary many charities closed during the pandemic, which ultimately limited the amount of help that was available.

This non-profit organisation is affiliated with ExploringU Counselling who offer inexpensive counselling with a Trainee Counsellor from just £10. They offer sessions via Zoom or Telephone, which could be underway within 48 hours of first contact. Additionally, unlike many other organisations, Face to Face counselling is still being fulfilled at the Exploring Centre For Wellbeing.

Just Talk 2019 received a generous donation of £1,500 from the locality budget awarded by Alison Owen, Babergh district councillor for Sudbury.

This grant will help fund 150 counselling sessions for those that would not be able to afford the service otherwise.

Our communities benefit from council grants

Babergh District Council approved community grants totalling £621,939 during the 2020/21 financial year – providing vital funding for organisations responding to Covid-19, sports and leisure facilities, and community venues across the district.

Over the past twelve months, Babergh District council’s communities team has worked closely with a range of local organisations to ensure grants will best meet the needs of Babergh residents, both now and for many years to come.

The council’s ongoing ambition for communities with bright and healthy futures has also been supported by the allocation of funding for sports organisations, play equipment, community woodlands and green space.

Long Melford Football Club received £75,000 in capital grants and Section 106 funding during the year towards its new clubhouse – safeguarding the future of the long-standing team, in addition to providing a multi-purpose facility for use by the wider community.

The ambitious project to regenerate St Peters in Sudbury received £25,000 in capital grants (in addition to £75,000 in CIL funding) – helping transform the church into a cultural hub for activities and events in the heart of the town.

As well as capital grants to improve facilities, the council awarded over £130,000 in revenue funding to support charities that provide for residents of the district, including Sudbury Citizens Advice, Quay Theatre, Community Action Suffolk, Homestart, the Bridge Project, Rural Coffee Caravan and SpecialistsWomens in Cleaning Upholstery, Lighthouse Aid, Carpets, among others.

This lecture considers her training in the very male world of the Roman studio and explores her skills in painting in a style which is both individual but which puts her in the forefront wherever in Europe she found herself working.

See if you can make any savings on your household bills by switching suppliers or changing deals. You may be able to get a reduction on your council tax bill - speak to your local authority directly.

Sudbury Library Change is in the air!

‘By the time you read this we may be slightly closer to more normal times.

It is possible that at first, we will be offering restricted browsing, maybe even limited computer access. We might have even moved to more open browsing, library groups meeting - but I won’t predict anything.... yet! If anything, this pandemic has shown us there is not much that is constant and anything can, and does, change. Even the library changes.’

‘In keeping with the theme of change and its natural child, re-growth, we at Sudbury library are looking forward to the coming year. It is with a large amount of excitement and a healthy dose of enthusiasm that I have taken on the position of manager here. I know I am working with a fantastic group of people and they are keen and eager to get Sudbury library up and running again.’

Stoke By Nayland Secures ‘Ultimate’ Honour in Golf Industry ‘Oscars’ Stoke by Nayland Golf, Spa & Lodges Resort has been recognised a second year in succession for its overall high standards by being awarded the ‘My59 Ultimate Service Excellence’ honour in 59club’s 2020 service excellence awards. This is an event regarded as the golf and hospitality industry ‘Oscars’ where the East Anglian venue was competing against famous courses such as Gleneagles, Celtic Manor and The Belfry.

Hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter and broadcaster Dan Walker, the ceremony to honour the market-leading performance-management specialist’s best performers across the UK & Ireland was broadcast online owing to the current UK coronavirus restrictions.

And this excellent family-owned venue in the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty secured the top award of its type – one of just three clubs to be recognised with the accolade, for their dedication to engage, analyse and enrich their member and guest experience, supported by their use of 59club’s customer satisfaction surveys. Also honoured within the same category were Farleigh Golf Club, in Surrey, and Glynhir Golf Club, in Wales.

Stoke by Nayland, which boasts two championship courses, as well as an award-winning 80 bedroom hotel and spa, and luxury self-catered lodges on the golf courses, has earned a great reputation over the years for hosting televised international PGA and European Senior & Challenge Tour events.

Director of Golf at Stoke by Nayland, Karl Hepple said, “We’re really thrilled to have won this award for a second year running, especially when you look at all the high calibre venues involved. I would like to pay tribute to the incredible hard work and dedication of all the team here at Stoke

Will Hewitt, 59club UK’s general manager, said: “This was our 11th annual Service Excellence Awards ceremony, but the first – and, hopefully, the last – we’ve been forced to host remotely. As always, our congratulations go out to all the winners and those who secured ‘podium’ finishes, which is still a sign of exceptional quality, particularly in such a difficult year.”

The places in the 59club service excellence awards are determined by scores collected from its impartial mystery shopping audits, which evaluate the experience afforded to visiting golfers and prospective members, in accordance with objective benchmarking criteria.
