Valentine Life Saver

On Valentine’s day there was a steady queue of people in St Peter’s, Sudbury, hoping to learn how to save a life of someone having a heart attack. With specialist instruction from members of the East Anglian Air Ambulance team, members of the public learned how to carry out chest compressions to keep the heart beating and also to use a deďŹ brillator.

Members of Sudbury Rotary were also present collecting donations towards the Air Ambulance and the President’s two other charities, Befriending and The Richmond Fellowship. Rotarians collected a total of £202.19 on the day.

During the day, a cheque presentation was made from Rotary to Mark Wilson of the Air Ambulance.

Philip and Beverley Richardson joined the cheque presentation, as Beverley’s life had been saved seven years’ ago by the Air Ambulance crew when she had been severely injured in a car accident.

From March 25 to 29, the annual Crucial Crew event will take place, when over 700 year 6 primary school children will take part in activities which will help them to keep safe in a number of situations which they may meet during their lives.

Also during March there will be opportunities to meet with REG! The newly titled Rotary Evening Group meets every fortnight at the Mill Hotel Bar. This is an informal get-together of men and women who do not have enough time to attend lunches but would like to become more involved with Sudbury Rotary. This year the group celebrates ten years of supporting local, unpaid carers. The group meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 1.30pm at the Sudbury Health Centre. Carers can get away from their day to day responsibilities for a couple of hours, share experiences and listen to interesting speakers. There is no charge to join.

Join the Great British Spring Clean

Great British Spring Clean

It may be Mother’s Day, but what better way to start it than spending an hour or Be part of the pick so, working up an appetite for your special lunch, by helping to collect litter and keeping our beautiful village looking spic and span.

The Long Melford Litter Pickers will be meeting at 10am at the Village Hall on Sunday 31st March 2019 to take part in this nationwide event. We will have enough bags and litter pickers for thirty people; just wear sturdy footwear and a pair of gloves.

The Long Melford Litter Pickers are a group of volunteers that started litter picking in January 2017. We meet on one Thursday and Sunday a month at 2pm and 10am respectively and regularly have up to ten volunteers attend.

To date we have collected 82 sacks of litter and are keen to continue with our efforts to keep our beautiful village spic and span. Our sociable group welcome more members, so if you are interested in joining us please do get in touch.

Our first garden centre, Perrywood Tiptree, has been operating since the 1950s when Alan Bourne’s parents bought the land and called it Perrywood Nurseries – growing potatoes and pick-your-own strawberries. In 1984, Alan and wife Karin took over the business and it is now an award-winning garden centre which is run with their three children Hannah, Simon and Tristan.

We took over Perrywood Sudbury (formerly the Wyevale Sudbury Garden Centre) on 24th September 2018, and it will continue to be a garden centre for the local area. Like Perrywood Tiptree it has a history of growing plants.

One of the most important powers we enjoy as Members of Parliament is the ability to initiate our very own ‘private’ legislation. ‘Private Members’ Bills’ (PMBs), as such proposals for new laws are called, abound in quantity – but with very few ever reaching the statute book, as most laws are Government Bills. My only ever PMB to date, on compensation for victims of terrorism, was objected to at the first hurdle and did not proceed (a common fate for such Bills, no matter how worthy the cause).

In this context, I was delighted to attend the Commons on Friday 8th February (PMBs are nearly always debated on a Friday) when we passed Finn’s Law, a PMB providing greater legal protection for service animals, and inspired by an attack on a Police Dog called Finn. Under current legislation, if a police dog is injured by a criminal trying to evade capture, the criminal can only be charged with criminal damage.

During the debate I outlined the case of Police Dog (PD) Aman and his handler PC Steve Jay of Suffolk Constabulary. In 2011, the pair were called out to assist with an incident in Ipswich with an armed individual who had stabbed a member of the public.

When the team arrived on site, the individual was attempting to break into a nearby house. PD Aman, under the control of this handler, attempted to restrain the individual, and both he and PC Jay were stabbed in the altercation. For his bravery PD Aman received the Police Dog Action and Humanitarian Action of the Year at Crufts in March 2012.

The Bill ensures that criminals who injure police dogs or police horses can be prosecuted under animal cruelty provisions offering the prospect of stiffer sentences. This PMB comes alongside other Government measures to boost animal welfare, such as banning the sale of ivory products in the UK and stamping out third party sales of puppies and kittens. The second of these bans will help to crack down on puppy farms and make it much harder for ‘high volume low welfare’ breeders to operate.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Who, out of my readership, thinks they would like to run a marathon? None of my mates in the herd would do such a thing, but I gather humans can train themselves up to go the distance. We have been fortunate to get two runners in the London marathon on April 28tth this year, and training is in full swing.

Both men would love to be sponsored for their efforts. Adam Bensusan has to raise the entry fee himself, and once that target is reached he can donate all the rest of the money he gets to us! Yeah, thanks mate. I hope you get lots of support.

The Centre’s next fundraiser is the horse race night is on 23rd March at Nayland village hall. 7pm for 7.30pm start. Tickets are £15 each which includes a two course supper. We had a bit of a rocky start to the term with some freezing temperatures, but two new child riders joined us and they are doing very well.

My photo shows a Thursday morning ride enjoying a bit of outdoor air and sunlight, but you can tell from the clothing that it was cold. In comparison the other photo shows the ‘tail end’ of a ride at the Dubai branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association, taken in January by one of our own volunteers. The temperature was a pleasant 24 degrees. There the rides finish at 11.00, and don’t resume until 16.00 to avoid the mid day heat. The ponies live in big loose boxes in large open-ended barns, with a team of grooms to care for them. They were still in their shaggy winter coats when this visit took place. The children (no adult riders in that branch) do not have any hands on experience in horse care as ours do, but their rides are similar to the ones we give, with plenty of educational games, movement and laughter. Her Highness Sheikha Hassa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum donated three of her ponies to the fledgling group to help it get started. Councils launch online portal for customers Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, along with Ipswich Borough Council have launched MyAccount, an online portal which provides residents and businesses with paperless bills, 24-hour account access and more.

The new MyAccount portal enables customers to view bills, reminders & notices, apply for discounts, and update personal details without leaving the comfort of their own home or workplace.

Users who sign up can access the portal’s latest paperless eBilling feature, allowing them to view Council Tax and or Business Rates bills online.

Other platform features include being able to check balances, view received payments and due instalments, see updates on housing benefit and council tax reduction claims, set up or amend direct debits, search for a council tax band and apply for discounts and exemptions.

The councils are encouraging residents and businesses across the districts and borough to make the environment-saving switch.

Cllr Derrick Haley, Chair of the Shared Revenues Partnership Joint Committee, said: “It’s good news that we’ve been able to launch this new MyAccount portal making it easier for our residents and businesses to view their account online.

“Not everyone has time to access our customer services during their working day, so this enables individuals to make changes and view documents at a time that works for them.”

Home-Start in Suffolk is a charity which supports families across the county where there is at least one child under the age of 12. Families may be in need of support for a variety of reasons, because of post-natal depression, illness or disability, isolation, family breakdown or bereavement.

We train and recruit volunteers who support families by visiting them in their homes on a weekly basis. We are seeking more volunteers to help us to meet the growing number of families in need of Home-Start support in the Bury St Edmunds Area.

We offer our volunteers accredited training, ongoing support and friendship.

Here is one Family’s story of how Home-Start in Suffolk helped them.

“Home-Start met Mum Lauren and her family shortly after their new baby was diagnosed with brain damage. Lauren and her husband were overwhelmed with the emotional and practical demands of caring for a baby who suffers from multiple seizures and is unsettled day and night whilst juggling the needs of their other young children.

Life was turned upside down for the family with hospital appointments, admissions and an unknown future. Their health visitor referred them to HomeStart Suffolk who introduced them to Ruth a trained Home-Start volunteer. Ruth visits Lauren and the children once a week providing support when Lauren’s husband works late.

Having Ruth there to “share the load” enables all of the children to get one-one attention; reading, playing or doing school work. Mum or Ruth cook dinner and they can all sit down together whilst Ruth holds or sings to the baby.

Lauren’s says she felt “immediately at ease” with Ruth and found it easy to talk to her when she was having a difficult week. Although the family’s situation remains the same, her visits have allowed the family time to adjust and explore what ongoing support is needed and available to them”.

Heritage Centre fun for young Quiz fun with history - Sudbury Heritage Centre is now an even more childfriendly space. It offers a new range of quiz projects for the young as well as having the existing press button access to features. One quiz is based on a screen presentation telling the life story of Simon of Sudbury, itself designed for young people. The Sudbury-born Archbishop of Canterbury was murdered during the Peasants’ Revolt. His skull, kept in St Gregory’s Church, was partly mummiďŹ ed by six days on a pike after the beheading in 1381. The other quizzes for young people need detective work to ďŹ nd answers among the artefacts and other exhibits in the Heritage Centre at Sudbury Town Hall.

Adults are catered for too with two new screen shows. One tells Simon’s life story and the other gives insight to death and destruction in Suffolk during the Peasants Revolt. Two members of Sudbury’s clergy were leading ďŹ gures.

Both presentations are the work of university student Tonia Lawes who went to school in Sudbury. The Simon story for young visitors and the quiz based on it are also her work.

We had a super day out when going to Brick Lane Music Hall in February, where we had a lovely coach ride on a beautiful sunny morning followed by a 3 course hot lunch before an afternoon of laughter at a fantastic show, called an “adult pantomime”. All good clean fun, our faces and sides ached from laughing, and we are now looking forward to next years show – taking bookings now for 12th FEBRUARY 2020. Places already going fast.

Still looking far ahead, I am also taking bookings for Christmas events!!!

The annual visits to Thursford Christmas Spectacular are on Wednesday 6th and Sunday 17th November, and our last one of the year - on Sunday 8th December to another matinee Christmas Spectacular at Snape Maltings Concert Hall by the Co-op Juniors who are celebrating their 15th show there this year. This follows a lovely 3 course lunch en route. Book early to not be disappointed in finding it is already fully booked!!

We are looking forward to our first 5 day holiday 2019 when we go to Weston -super-Mare in March, and another holiday in October to Warners at Hayling Island. March 2020 is also open to booking for 5 days in Southport, all including optional excursions each day.

Vintage Revival Event being planned for Sudbury On Saturday 22nd June at The Delphi Centre Sports Field 10:00am till 5:00pm an event to raise funds for “Upbeat” Heart Support and The Delphi Centre refurbishment fund will be held. East Anglian Garden Group At our meeting on the 2nd February we all enjoyed a fabulous talk from Gail Harland on Snowdrops, their place e in art and culture, planting and growing. We saw slides des featuring snowdrops, ranging from the Besler Herbal in 1613 at the British Library, and early paintings to present day; snowdrops on Royal Copenhagen’s Flora Danica, Spirit of the Flowers, also in textiles through the ages, and how the drug Galanthamine is being used as a treatment for Alzheimers. Gail gave us a comprehensive list of wonderful gardens to visit, her personal Mecca being Colesbourne Park in Gloucestershire, although the more accessible recommendations included Beth Chatto’s garden, and Blakenham Woodland Garden. She gave us her favourite varieties, and advised us on propagation, companion plants, pests and diseases, an all encompassing and fascinating insight into the world of the galanthaphile!

We are looking forward to the arrival of our Celebrity Speaker, James AlexanderSinclair, garden and landscape designer, writer, television presenter and RHS Council Member on the 16th February. More of that next month, as his arrival will just miss the copy deadline for this edition. I will also be able to report on the visit from Stephen Barstow, with his talk on vegetables, Around the World in 80 Plants.

Our next outing will be on Wednesday May 15 to the Fairhaven Water Gardens, and East Ruston Old Vicarage, which I am sure will be a memorable day out, hopefully the weather should be kind to us at that time of the year.

Top Girls The May production from Sudbury Dramatic Society based at The Quay Theatre will be Top Girls by Caryl Churchill which is on from Tuesday 7th to Saturday 11th May at 7.45pm With an all-female cast, Caryl Churchill’s play appears often on school exam syllabuses and looks at the role that women play in society and the price that they pay for success.

Written and set in the early 80s, the play takes the audience on an audacious theatrical journey which begins with a restaurant gathering of legendary and historical women all celebrating the promotion of Marlene at the Top Girls Recruitment Agency. We then see how Marlene operates in the cut-throat world of the office before moving on to a catastrophic confrontation between two sisters around a kitchen table.

Top Girls is directed by Annie Eddington who is thrilled to be directing this extraordinary play. Annie says “Caryl Churchill is an extraordinary writer and I have been passionate about this play for many years. It is playful, teasing, ultimately chilling and although written in 1982 it is entirely relevant to the world we inhabit today”.

Pioneering project helps young people take next step A pioneering partnership in Mid Suffolk is helping young people to take their next step into employment, or on to further education and training.

The Together Programme, run by The Mix, Stowmarket, is being co-funded

by Mid Suffolk District Council, Suffolk County Council and local employer PPG, and is thought to be one of the first of its kind in Suffolk, thanks to collaboration between local authorities, local business and the youth sector.

Local firms are being invited to work with specialist youth workers at The Mix to shape the programme – to improve the skills and aspirations of young people aged 15 to 24 and ensure that employers get the future job candidates they need.

The young participants will then go through a personalised programme of training and one-to-one coaching, helping them to transform their personal lives and relationships as well as learning practical skills to help them take the next step in their lives, whether into employment or into education and training.

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice March Advice Column I recently joined a dating website. I was contacted by a lovely man and we started to exchange messages. We now email every day, although we haven’t met in person yet. We had arranged to go for a meal, but then he cancelled because he needs to concentrate on fundraising for his daughter - the medicines she needs aren’t available on the NHS. He’s asked me to contribute, his daughter needs treatment urgently.

He’s given me details of a bank account to pay into. I want to help, but I’m unsure because I’ve only known him a short time.

You’re right to be cautious. Unfortunately dating sites are increasingly being targeted by unscrupulous people. It can be difficult to accept that someone you’ve developed feelings for is trying to swindle you. But scammers can be highly skilled at using emotional triggers to persuade people to part with money, or with personal information that might make victims vulnerable to identity theft.

Your friend may be completely genuine, but try to find out if he’s really who he says he is. A reluctance to call you or Skype, or profile information such as educational achievements not matching the content of his messages, could be a red flag that this is a scam.

Other things to look out for include expressing strong emotions in a short period of time, moving the conversation away from the dating site and onto a private channel such as email or instant messaging and asking lots of personal questions - but giving away very little in return.
