Work to begin on Riverside Path

Thank you to Matt Byham (pictured below) who has skillfully taken these Babergh District Council has completed the purchase of a section of land in Great Cornard that will link the parish to Sudbury via a Stour-side footpath. The land had previously photographs been owned byon thethe Long Melford and River Stour at Sudbury Sudbury Angling Association, which agreed to sell the land to Babergh. To mark the purchase Babergh’s

Leader, Cllr John Ward, visited the area and was joined by Great Cornard councillors Tony Bavington, Tom Burrows and Mark Newman, and Cllr Jan Osborne, who has been closely involved in the delivery of the footpath. Once completed the path will provide an extension to the existing Cornard Riverside Path, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy more of the riverbank as well as providing pedestrian access to the River Stour Trust’s Visitor and Education Centre at Dovehouse Meadow.

When complete, the path will form a pedestrian route from Dovehouse Meadow in Great Cornard to the Cornard Riverside Path. This area had previously formed a ‘missing link’ and its purchase will now enable the entire route from Dovehouse Meadow to Friars Meadow near the Kingfisher Leisure Centre to be enjoyed. Cllr John Ward, Leader of Babergh District Council, said: “The purchase of this land, with the co-operation of the Angling Association, is great news: there has been a real drive for this path from both the community and from councillors across the political spectrum. We’re now set to complete the path and I’m looking forward to putting on my walking boots and enjoying the sights and sounds of the Stour from Dovehouse Meadow to Friars Meadow.”

News from The Christopher Centre Sudbury Like so many other charities The Christopher Centre is struggling to stay afloat in these strange and uncertain times. It is very strange indeed to see the building silent and empty. Our first priority however is the safety of our Community and to this end The Centre will remain closed for the time being.

We have not been inactive during this time, taking the opportunity to redecorate and revamp some of our rooms and putting in progress a new online booking service to make it much easier for folks to book rooms 24/7 once we are up and running again.

Looking ahead we can’t wait to have all our groups back in the Centre and the old buzz of the building returning. Once we get the go ahead to throw the doors open wide we are hoping to celebrate with a tea party, we very much hope folk will come and join us.

Financial concerns are never far away and we cannot get away from the fact that with no income coming in over the past few months we are vulnerable.

Helen and I are working hard on new ideas and ventures, hopefully we will survive this time of crisis to put them into practice.

One idea involves working with local Allotment Associations home bakers, local cottage crafters etc to create ‘pop up’ Saturday mini markets each week.

Despite the inability to meet face-to-face for their regular lunches, meetings of Sudbury Rotary Club continue each Monday at 12.30 p.m. using Zoom. This has enabled around 20 members to stay in regular face and voice contact, and works alongside email updates and a monthly newsletter to all members.

There are regular reports from members on what they are doing during the current ‘lock down’, including this one from Lesley and Tony Platt: We’re sure many people are trying to complete long-outstanding projects around our houses and garden, or at our desks. We have been doing just that, although the long list which each of us has doesn’t seem to get any shorter. So we did something completely different a few weeks’ ago, just to bring some added excitement!

We went ‘food’ shopping: to collect some new chickens – two Buff Orpingtons and two Bluebells, then only 14 weeks old, so not due to lay for another 6 weeks or so. It felt so good to get out – and let us reassure you that social distancing was observed during the whole transaction – it’s the first time I’ve pinned money to a gatepost!

We have kept chickens for several years, but the fox managed to break into the hen run last October and killed our five lovely girls, and we needed to make the hen house and run even more secure before adopting any more. Getting the hen house into the run was a challenge: you know the song ‘Right said Fred: take off all the handles and the thing what held the candles’. It was a bit like that: remove the roof, take off the handles, remove one side - all to get it through the entrance gate to their ‘run’. At least we feel the hens will be safer inside, especially with concrete slabs all the way around the outside of it too. Try digging your way through that barricade, Mr (or Mrs) Fox! Having installed the new ‘girls’ in their smart, freshly painted hen house, we then demolished the little garden shed where we store their food, etc., as it has seen better days. New shed (which needed building), garden turf (which needed laying) were then the next major jobs on the list! There still are not enough hours in the day to get everything done (and we’ve added another four hens to the flock as well)!

It’s that time of year when even the most casual of gardeners starts to take an interest in the patch outside their house.

But if your dreams of beautiful blooms and home-grown treats for the kitchen table all too often end in wilting, withering disappointment then help is at hand. ‘Gardening for the Uncommitted: What You Really Need to Know, When You Don’t Really Want to Know’ is a new book by Sudbury horticulturalist Catherine McMillan.

Available now on Amazon, the bitesize book is aimed at beginners, casual gardeners and those who have spent years muddling through.

Catherine, who works at Katie’s Garden Plant Centre in Newbourne and Bridge Farm Plants in Monks Eleigh said: “In over 20 years of working on nurseries I’ve built up a good picture of what people do and don’t know, the misunderstandings and common mistakes. “Most gardening books are aimed at people who are keen to learn everything about gardening, but I thought there was a real need for something that just sticks to the essentials. “Too many people waste money and effort on plants that aren’t suited to their growing conditions, or beat themselves up over failures that aren’t failures at all, because they don’t know the basics.�

The 39-year-old, who lives in Walnut Tree Lane with partner Barry Spencer, himself a gardener, added: “My aim was to create a fun, easy read. There is lots of information in the book but it is surrounded by my bad jokes and silly cartoons, so people learn without feeling like they are studying for a test.�

For many years Catherine combined her nursery career with working part-time at the Suffolk Free Press as editorial assistant, where she was able to hone her writing skills.

Gardening columns by her featured in the East Anglian Daily Times several years ago, in the Saturday supplement. She currently has a regular slot on Felixstowe Radio giving gardening advice, and also shares tips online.

Her horticultural life started at Chilton Quality Plants in Newton Road, and she often helped to run the nursery’s plant stall on Sudbury market. Hello folks. Hope this finds you all well, and if like me, looking forward to days when we can actually get on a coach and get some change in scenery.

I can’t wait, this is just a whopping great punishment.

All this lovely weather for the whole of May, and us suck at home.

It is no good dangling anything under your noses yet, especially as our August holiday has already been cancelled.

I am so looking forward when we can get back to some sort of normality, but until we can get permission to at least sit with our friends instead of feeling like a leper.

So, all I can say is “keep up obeying the orders, and fingers crossed that hopefully not in to too distant future, we WILL meet again, but literally “don’t know when” but no-one hopes that it will be “sooner rather then later” than me.

New COVID facecovering venture uncovers hidden truths about anxiety

The COVID-19 lockdown has led to local Anxiety Coach Kerry Gooden to team up with Sudbury service Just Talk 2019 to raise awareness of the hidden anxiety pandemic.

From making banana bread to crafting COVID-19 blankets, the lockdown has meant a lot of us have been able to unleash our creative sides. Kerry Gooden is among them.

Investing in a new sewing machine just six weeks ago to craft some cushions, her isolation project evolved into something both bang on trend and a fundraising opportunity for a service very close to her heart.

Since getting up to speed with her new machine, qualified STILL Method anxiety coach Kerry is now turning her hand to fashioning functional, fully washable protective face coverings.

Kerry launched her timely new line just days before the Prime Minister’s 10th May address to the nation and its recommendation for the nation’s public to don facemasks when out in enclosed public spaces, such as supermarkets and on public transport.

She explains how she got the idea to turn her own response to the pandemic into something positive: “Being in lockdown in the early days I, like a lot of people, just became hung up on watching the news,” says Kerry. “My anxiety was skyrocketing, so I decided to put into practice what I teach, turn off the rolling news and look for ways to do something constructive.”

“From people I talk to, seeing people outside wearing medical facemasks just adds to the heightened fears a lot of people have, which is why I decided to look for some brightly coloured and fashionable textiles online to make my own face coverings.’’

“Each one has three layers and made out of cotton or polycotton.

They are fully washable too, so reducing waste, which is a problem with plastic-based medical-grade masks.”

Moments after announcing her new venture, Kerry received a flurry of orders for her colourful creations through her Facebook page and is working hard to keep pace.

Even better is that, recognising the less newsworthy, but no-lessimportant anxiety epidemic in the UK, Kerry is donating �1 from every face-mask to JustTalk2019.

The work the service does is likely to be even more vital as COVID19’s wider impact on wellbeing becomes clear in the coming months. Researchers examining the incidence of anxiety, stress disorders and depression in China after the lockdown there earlier this year noted a surge in mental health referrals.

Medical professionals are expecting a similar upswing here in the UK. Already one in ten young people experience anxiety and one in four of the adult population will experience a mental health challenge at some point in their lives.

This is making me so anxious, even though I don’t have any special health issues. I’m going to wear a mask, but not all the customers may do so. I used to take the bus to work, I don’t have a car and I think it’s too far to cycle.

And I’m not even sure if my kids will be back at school by then!

The thought of returning to work is keeping me awake at night.

Do I have to go back to work?

It’s understandable you’re feeling anxious. However, the short answer to your question is yes, you do need to comply with any reasonable management request to return to work.

The key here is “reasonable.” The government has published specific guidance for different businesses on the steps they can take to minimise coronavirus transmission. If you don’t think they’re complying, or are putting your health at risk, you should talk to them about this.

Similarly, they should listen to your concerns about using public transport. You could, for instance, ask to travel at a quieter time of day.

Communities benefit from Coronavirus funding boost totalling over �100,000 Communities have received more than �100,000 in vital funding from Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils – helping them to respond to Covid-19 and paving the way for a stronger society.

Both councils acknowledge the key role of community groups, along with town and parish councils, in easing the challenges faced by residents at this time. In recognition of this and the financial hardships arising from the pandemic, a new Covid-19 Emerging Needs Grant was set up last month, ensuring much-needed funding could be provided to new and existing groups across both districts.

Grants of up to �2,500 can be applied for to cover increased costs incurred as a result of the Coronavirus. The grant has a straightforward applications process, allowing applicants to receive funding within weeks and resulting in almost 80 applications being submitted to date. This figure is set to increase, with grants continuing to be made available.

The councils’ Grants team has responded to 98% of applicants so far and grants totalling more than �101,250 have already been approved. Included within this figure is over �15,000 of funding for local foodbanks. Grants have also been offered to organisations providing meals on wheels, community information services and mental health outreach programmes.

Grant recipient Mencap said: “This grant will ensure that we will be able to provide the helpline service in Babergh and Mid Suffolk to people with a learning disability and their families and carers. In this challenging and unprecedented time, the impact of this will be vital.”

The crucial work of community groups has been complemented by the Home, But Not Alone service, set up the county-wide Collaborative Communities Board - providing emergency assistance by linking TRIBE volunteers to vulnerable residents with care needs or loneliness. Since its launch at the end of March, the helpline has received over 8,500 calls.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have managed referrals for its districts, including the distribution of vital medication and urgent requests for food. One caller said: “A lady very kindly gave me her direct line number and arranged an emergency food parcel.

Although we’d only spoken in the afternoon, the food parcel arrived by 6pm that night, which was absolutely marvellous.”

This invaluable support continuing, as the virus and its aftermath remains, is a priority for both councils. Plans are being put in place to cement the community groups and good neighbour schemes created in response to Covid-19, with localities officers from the councils’ Communities team aiding with this.

Cllr Derek Davis, Cabinet Member for Communities for Babergh District Council said: “I’d like to thank communities in Babergh who have demonstrated immense strength and resilience at a time of national emergency. They are doing an amazing job and we will continue to do all we can to support their efforts.”

Cllr Julie Flatman, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing for Mid Suffolk District Council said: “I am pleased our grants have already made a real difference to the communities pulling together in response to Covid-19. Although government restrictions are starting to ease, the virus will be with us for some time and protecting our most vulnerable residents remains a priority.”

New grant scheme opens for small businesses A new Discretionary Grant is now open for businesses based in shared offices or other flexible workspaces, market traders, bed and breakfasts and small charity properties.

As part of the Government’s extended package of COVID-19 support, the grant is for businesses who are not eligible for either the Small Business or Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Funds but still have ongoing fixed property-related costs such as rent, license fees, hire or mortgage payments.

To qualify for the Discretionary Grant, businesses must be permanently operating out of either:

a share of a larger business premises which is rated for business rates purposes (of �15,000 or less or �51,000 or less in the retail, hospitality and leisure sector)

•

a regular market stall on the weekly markets in Hadleigh, Stowmarket and Sudbury

To access the Discretionary Grant, eligible businesses must complete an online application form and provide evidence they operate from a single premises, were trading at the premises on 11 March 2020 and demonstrate a significant fall in income due to COVID-19. The first phase of applications is open until Friday 19th June.

The value of the grants in Babergh and Mid Suffolk range between �2,500 - �5,000 and can only be claimed by businesses who have been unable to access any other grants (excluding the SelfEmployed Income Support Scheme). The grant allowance has been set individually by each local authority depending on the level of funding they have received from Government while also aiming to support as many small businesses as possible.

Unlike the Small Business Grant Fund and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund, which allocated grants automatically to certain businesses based on their rateable business rates, the Discretionary Grant will take into account certain factors when determining the grant allocation. These factors include fixed costs, number of employees, ability to trade online, whether a business has had to close completely and the scale of losses due to COVID-19.

Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth said: “We understand the challenges that our small businesses have faced due to the coronavirus crisis and we welcome the introduction of the Discretionary Grant that will help smaller businesses in shared spaces, market traders as well as B&Bs and charities who have been unable to access any other financial support.”

Cllr Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth said: “I urge small businesses with property costs to find out whether they qualify for the Discretionary Grant and apply as soon as possible. There are a huge number of ongoing challenges for our smaller businesses and charities and this fund could make a huge difference to those that are struggling in the current economic climate.”

Once the first phase of the Discretionary Grant funding has closed, the Council will review the remaining budgets and hope to open the grant to other types of small businesses in the districts.

The Small Business Grant and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Funds are both still open for new applications.

We’re rooting for new parents during COVID-19 and beyond A Tree for Life scheme in Babergh and Mid Suffolk which offers a free tree for new parents, is now open for 2020 applications allowing families to apply from home during the coronavirus outbreak.

Recognising that new parents may be feeling more isolated than usual, and looking for something to look forward to with their new arrival, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have now opened their Tree for Life applications.

It is open to all families in the districts who welcome a new arrival between 1 January and 31 December 2020, in addition to parents who may have lost a child during the same period to apply for a remembrance tree.

The initiative offers parents with a new born or newly adopted child the chance to mark their arrival by planting a tree.
