Sudbury reopens its doors The word ‘unprecented’ may be up there with one of the most frequently used words in 2020. We think back to late February / early March and Coronavirus had already started to turn the world upside down. By 23 March, most UK businesses were forced to close their doors and drastically re-think how they could keep going without re-opening them for months. In Sudbury, a town known for its community cohesion, the drive to help the most vulnerable in our town was immediate. At the time of writing (on Suffolk Day no less), the Sudbury Community Network still has a total of 167 active local volunteers who continue to help over 200 people in need in Sudbury, Great Cornard and surrounding villages. With this incredible team of volunteers, Sudbury’s Community Wardens, our Crisis Co-ordinators (better known as Sudbury’s Tourist Info team), and the GO Start Community Transport volunteers have been invaluable cogs in keeping this support network well-oiled and in motion.
The strain this crisis has had on our community and businesses is palpable. However, Sudbury’s independent businesses have responded with incredible community spirit and creativity. From high teas in a box, ‘isolation packs’ delivered to your door, to live online sale rails, these innovations from our local Independent businesses have been compiled to form Sudbury’s Virtual High Street. The resource was created to enable local people to shop locally from home during lockdown. The Virtual High Street continues to be in a vital tool in keeping loyal customers connected to their favourite businesses, receiving over 3000 weekly visitors online. Even though doors are beginning to reopen, many businesses are realising that a digital presence is as important as a physical one – and that both play a vital role in their unique identities and survival.
