The ceremony was also joined by Alison, Fiona, Thomas, Helen, Diane and other members of the Berry family, family of former Babergh District Council Countryside Officer Peter Berry. Mr Berry worked at Babergh from 1974, and was instrumental in forming the original plans for the River Stour footpath. Following his death in 2009, while still employed at the council, Babergh councillors agreed it fitting to dedicate the footpath he had worked so hard to secure in his honour. Thomas Berry, Mr Berry’s son, officially unveiled a plaque in the moving ceremony.

The newly completed path provides an extension of the existing Cornard Riverside Path, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy more of the idyllic riverbank as well as providing pedestrian access to the River Stour Trust’s Visitor and Education Centre at Dovehouse Meadow. The path forms a pedestrian route of Dovehouse Meadow in Great Cornard to the Cornard Riverside Path.

Cllr Jan Osborne, Deputy Leader of Babergh District Council, said: “It’s been a dream of mine to see this path open, and I know many others shared that dream: to see the ribbon cut and the first walkers stroll alongside the Stour was a truly wonderful moment. It has taken a lot of hard work, but I know residents and visitors who use this path will feel it has all been worth it.”

Cllr Tina Campbell, Babergh’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Today we’ve marked the culmination of a great deal of work by residents, councillors and council officers to see this path created: it was a privilege to be able to share this moment with Peter Berry’s family. Peter’s hard work, both as a Babergh officer and as Chair of the Sudbury Riverside Group, demonstrated just how determined people were to see this path opened, and today shows that their hard work has paid off in full.”

Rotary in Sudbury With a record number of 98 decorated trees, the 2018 Rotary Christmas Tree Festival was a great success. Every day queues of people visited the magical display, with each tree individually decorated by a school, charity, local business or private individual. It is anticipated that around £4,500 will have been raised to support the President’s chosen charities this year – The Befriending Scheme, East Anglian Air Ambulance and The Richmond Fellowship. A very tall Tree of Memories under the chancel arch gave those who wished an opportunity to leave a message of love and remembrance for those no longer with us, and more messages than ever were hung on the tree during the festival. The tree was sponsored by Co-operative Funeral Services, who provided the cards to be hung on the tree. These would be carefully taken down and blessed at a local Church service.

Santa and his elves were also busy. Based in his grotto in Sudbury Library Santa was visited by many children, who whispered their Christmas gift wishes to him, whilst parents listened! All money collected will be added to the President’s charity fund.

The final lunch of the Rotary year took place at The Swan in Lavenham, when over 50 members and their guests enjoyed a festive meal.

Meetings of the Rotary Community Forum continue to be held every fortnight, for an informal gathering lasting no more than an hour. This gives men and women who do not have enough time to attend lunches an opportunity to become members of Sudbury Rotary’s ‘satellite club’. At the first meeting of the new year, on January 7, guest speaker will be the Club’s Rotary Youth Leadership Award student, John Perrens, who will tell us about the week he spent at Graffham Water, being involved in many outdoor activities and other challenges during his sponsored week of training.

On January 21, the title of the talk is “System Strategy” from Rotarian Philip Richardson and on January 28, Sally Wiseman will be advising us to “Take Care” – both fascinating topic titles.

Sudbury Rotary continues to support Sudbury Carers who meet every month at the Sudbury Health Centre to socialise and hear from entertaining speakers. Their next meeting is on January 8 at 1.30 p.m.

An important event on Thursday, February 14 will be CPR training offered by East Anglian Air Ambulance in St Peter’s, Sudbury.

The main feature of our June calendar was the annual Prom Concert held on Saturday 16th June at St Peter’s; this year’s was probably one of the most enjoyable ever with a record attendance and featured the welcome return of the popular Long Melford Silver Band with its new conductor, Nigel Partridge, taking the stage for us for the first time and really “working the audience” in the traditional items towards the end of every Prom Concert. This year’s was rather special because the Silver Band paid tribute to the RAF by playing Walford Davies’ RAF March and to the soldiers of the 1914-18 war. Emphasising the wide range of music which we enjoyed, other items included Karl Jenkins’ Benedictus, the Best of Bond and a miscellany from West Side Story. Taking up the West Side story cue, Sudbury’s young soprano Evie Press enthralled the audience with her rendition of “I feel pretty” and perhaps even more so Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro, accompanied on the organ by Rotarian Roger Green. Not surprisingly the audience called for encores from both Evie and the Silver Band and we ended the night singing “Bring me sunshine”.

What an event! – I did wonder at one point whether there might also be dancing in the aisles. Maybe next year because the Silver Band is already booked for next year’s concert on 15th June 2019. Mark this date in your diaries The first play for 2019 from Sudbury Dramaticnow!

HEALTH & WELLBEING 2019 Hello and a happy New Year to you all. Let me start with a small introduction, my name is Nic Carter and I am a community based personal trainer. Being community based means I do not work from a gym, instead I work from the green spaces, parks, people’s home or their garden (wherever people feel most comfortable) within their local community.

This time of year means different things to different people, though in the main, most of us make New Year resolutions of some form or another.

These can be related to our health, wellbeing or fitness. More often than not though these resolutions don’t last, and we can end up going back to our old habits, even before the month of January is out.

In order to ensure that you can make resolutions that are achievable and that will last, take small steps to reaching your bigger outcomes. Whatever your end goal is, break this down into smaller chunks, i.e. short, medium and long term goals. After all, an elephant can only be eaten one bite at a time (metaphorically speaking).

For example, your long term goals could be aimed for within 3 months and could be something like, “I would like to reduce my body fat % to be within the healthy range, and increase my fitness levels”. To achieve this, your short term goal could be, “I will have a PT session once a week” and this could be fully achieved within 4 weeks. Your medium term goal could be, “I will have a PT session once a week, run twice a week and aim to lower my body fat % by 2%”, which could be achieved after 8 weeks. By your final 4 week block, as your fitness routine has become embedded, your final goal to ensure your body fat % is within a healthy range could be achieved alongside your increasing fitness levels.

When resolutions / goals are broken down in this way, you will ensure that your adherence and motivation to your new found habits remain as you achieve your desired outcomes week after week. Once you have achieved your short term goal, you will be far more motivated to work toward your medium and long term goals as you begin to feel the fruits of your labour, both physically and mentally. nic@niccarterpt.co.uk

Sound Baths Try something new in 2019 You may know that Sound can be very soothing, evoke strong emotional reactions and trigger long forgotten memories, but have you ever considered its potential for healing you on a physical, psychological, emotional and even spiritual level?

The human body is around 70% water. Liquids (and solids) are actually much better conductors of sound waves than air. Therefore, Sound affects each and every cell in our physical body. Just think back to the iconic scene in the film ‘Jurassic Park’, when a cup of drink sitting on the side begins rippling with vibrations in response to the pounding footsteps of distant dinosaurs approaching.

Our ancestors from all cultures around the world have been using Sound Healing since ancient times. For example, drumming appears to be as old as humanity itself. Although we think of drumming as being loud and powerful, a rhythmic beat is actually very calming and relaxing. Perhaps it takes us back to our very first auditory experience of hearing our mothers’ heartbeat whilst in the safety of her womb.

The oldest discovered Gong dates back over 4,000 years. Gongs are possibly the most powerful and intense therapeutic instrument, capable of a surprising range of tones and frequencies, from the lowest earthly rumblings to high pitched sounds akin to dolphin and whale song.

Suffolk Mind launches mental health campaign, RED January

Independent mental health charity Suffolk Mind is warming up for RED January, a mental health campaign encouraging people to get active every day to beat the blues away.

In Suffolk, and across the UK, figures show one in four people will experience a mental health challenge in any given year. In England, one in six people report experiencing a common mental health issue, such as anxiety and depression, each week.

RED January is founded on research that shows physical activity can reduce symptoms of mental illness such as depression and anxiety. In the post RED January 2018 survey, 87% of people who took part reported feeling significantly better physically and mentally, after getting active every day.

To take part in RED January, all you need to do is register for free on our website: www.suffolkmind.org.uk/redjanuary, and then walk, run, swim (or anything you like) for however long you like – whether 5 minutes or 5k and beyond. Over 100 people have already registered for RED January in Suffolk.

Proposed Budget cuts for 2019/20

It is also the season of severe weather conditions, treacherous roads, illness and accidents, a season where ALL our services are stretched to their limits, hospitals, GP’s, Highways maintenance as they try to keep our roads clear and safe. You can also help with winter issues by taking extra care travelling, be prepared if you are at a party so you know how you are getting home, help support elderly or infirm neighbours who may become housebound in bad weather.

As always we are blessed with the number of volunteers we have in our communities, not just for the work they do in times of difficulty, but the continuous and sustained support they give all year round. I would like to take this opportunity to say well done to you all and also to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who has supported me again this year as I continue to support you, the people of the communities I serve.

Make time for your wellbeing and reach out to those who need help this Christmas Health leads in Suffolk are uniting in a message of support for anyone struggling to cope this winter, calling on people to seek help and not to struggle alone.

In a joint message between Suffolk’s Public Health team, Suffolk Mind and Samaritans, people are urged to make time for their own wellbeing, as well as those around them this festive season by reaching out to friends and family, staying active and planning early, not forgetting the every-day bills, to avoid getting into unnecessary debt in the new year.

The call on people not to suffer in silence over the holiday period is part of a continuing approach to support good mental health in Suffolk. Suffolk Lives Matter encourages people to talk openly, while raising awareness of the support available to help people manage their mental health. Since it began in 2016, more than 150 people have become Suffolk Life Savers as part of the far-reaching campaign to reduce the number of people in the county who take their own lives.

Around 60 people die by suicide in Suffolk every year, with Christmas and New Year being a particularly challenging time for many, especially those who have been bereaved. Earlier in the year, Suffolk’s suicide prevention steering group launched a new service to support individuals, families and others bereaved by suicide.

AMPARO (which means ‘shelter’ or ‘safe haven’ in the Spanish language) works in close partnership with the police, coroner service and other partners to offer support following notification of a suspected suicide. The service offers a discreet and completely confidential service, including 1-2-1 individual support, practical help and signposting to local services that can help. AMPARO Suffolk can also support communities, schools and workplaces in the event of a suspected or actual suicide.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing gives advice on easy, free and meaningful activities people can do to improve wellbeing.

While no single organisation is responsible for preventing suicide, a range of professionals from the voluntary and charity sector, clinical commissioning groups, local councils, police, Healthwatch Suffolk, the coroner’s office and mental health services all play a crucial role.

In November, the Scrutiny Committee discussed proposals for the 2019/20 budget. These will be finalised and presented to the Cabinet in January, before being debated by the full Council in February.

Council tax will increase by a total of 3.99% in 2019/20 – this will be made up of a 2.99% increase in general council tax and a final 1% increase for the Social Care Precept.

The proposed “tactical savings” total £11.2m. These are spread across the Council’s directorates (as shown in the table below), with Growth, Highways and Infrastructure, Adult and Community Services, and Health, Wellbeing and Children’s Services seeing the greatest cuts.

The proposals for tactical savings include: -

Remove the full Citizens Advice Grant – however the Council have since announced that this will be phased in rather than immediate, with 50% of the grant being cut this year and the remaining 50% being cut in the 2020/21 budget Staffing reduction (totalling £3m) across all directorates Reduce Housing Related Support and the provision of hostel beds Negotiate care pricing Stop displaying bus timetables at the roadside Reduce spend on sponsored bus services Reduce out-of-hours stand-by service and winter support fleet for Suffolk Highways Stop road sign cleaning and only maintain mandatory road markings Turn more streetlights off overnight Cease accreditation of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme (the scheme will continue, however organisations will license themselves directly with the charity rather than through SCC)

Unfortunately, I have not been informed of the savings associated with each of the above proposals, and instead have only been told how much each directorate is expected to save in total. The final proposals, along with the savings associated with each of them, will not be made available until January.

U-Turn on support for period poverty In October, a motion asking for a commitment of £15,000 in the budget to help tackle “period poverty” was unfortunately rejected by the Council.

However, the administration have since announced that they will be undertaking an audit of the services in Suffolk that are aimed at tackling period poverty, to identify gaps and assess how provision can be improved.

I am cautiously hopeful that this review will result in proper support and funding for those amazing voluntary organisations that are currently providing free sanitary products. They cannot provide that service all on their own, and a commitment of funding from Suffolk County Council will be vital to ensure we eradicate period poverty across the whole county.

Decision on Upper Orwell Crossings delayed Work on the Upper Orwell Crossings in Ipswich has been suspended since August 2018, due to concerns that the costs of the project were no longer sustainable.

In October, the administration announced that they would need an additional £43m of funding in order to continue with the project. It was agreed by Cabinet that officers and councillors would have until December to try and find this additional funding.

However, this deadline has now been pushed back to January 2019. We are therefore expecting an announcement in the new year about the future of the project.

Significant increase in Insurance Pay-outs for cars damaged by Potholes Data published under Freedom of Information laws has shown that, between 1 January and 16 October this year, Suffolk Highways have already paid out £67,819.07 for vehicle damage (including insurance pay outs, costs and legal fees). This is a significant increase from the previous year, when pay-outs for the whole of 2017 totalled £26,004.63.

The number of claims has also more than doubled, from 598 in 2017 to 1,265 so far in 2018.

Short Story Contribution 2013 Midwinter - January Thaw Today a metallic sky masks much of the light on this familiar and greenbrown January backdrop.The temperature belies both the month as well as the frosty snow scenes of last week. Has the ice bid us farewell for yet another year?

I approach the meadows from the alleyway and the glorious flash of colour which zooms under the foot bridge and down the mill stream is like a jewel in a crown. The Kingfisher has been disturbed and within a footstep, he has vanished!

How amazing too that over the past twenty four hours the snow on these pastures has thawed and the flooded areas of yesterday have dissipated, leaving the river high and rapid in its meandering course.

The haunting refrain from Lindisfarne’s, ‘Winter Song’, a sensitive and questioning folk ballad, has accompanied me each day as I have tramped through the chilling environment; its chorus cries,”when Winter, comes howling in”.

Former pro-tour professional Russell Oakey has the club championship title at Newton Green Golf Club. With reigning champion Jed Seeley not managing to appear following playing in the England Amateur Championships previous day, Oakey took advantage to post a two round, two below par score of 136. Had Seeley been present, he would have had his work cut out stopping Oakey, who shot a level par 69 in the first round, and then followed up with a 67, including a run from the third of three birdies, a par and an eagle on the par five seventh. Chasing him home was junior Ben Tatum, on 147, while Steve Wordley, who is back in action after a couple of seasons without much golf, recording 148 in third place.

The group of performers have been working together since September, taking part in a series a drama and art workshops to devise the show.

The Phoenix Collective are an inclusive theatre opportunity for people with learning disabilities. Drama, creative and visual art are explored through weekly workshops and can; raise self esteem, promote independence, increase confidence, improve team work and communication skills and develop performance skills and theatre knowledge.

The group meets on Fridays 4.30– 6.30 at the jetty at the Quay.

Mixed Event at Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club On Saturday the 24th of November, the 2 new captains of the golf club, John Sandford & Diana Harris, hosted their first mixed event of their year, the Beaujolais Brunch. This is a mixed medal scramble played on the Gainsborough course. A shotgun start allowed all ten teams to finish at the same time and then enjoy a meal in the Constable rooms. Originally this was designed to taste the new Beaujolais wine, fresh out of France, but now it is just an event with some good wine taken with the meal. First place, with a nett score of 56, were Bev & Ian Thompson together with Jo Little & Del Prichard. In second place, with a score of 57, were the perennial runners up, Mandy & Nigel Byham with Suzanne & Duncan Smith.

On Sunday the 25th of November the fourth round (of five) of the winter league was played on the Constable course. A good autumn day made for good golf & despite the course being all of its length the better ball stableford scores were high. In first place with 45 points were Jack Chalmers & Jake Millard beating Eric Fisher & Malcolm Norton, who also had 45 points, on countback. The league is based on the best 2 scores from a maximum of five with place points awarded; 16 for being first and 1 for being 16th. The competition on the day was tough with place points only being awarded to pairs with more than 40 stableford points.

After four rounds, Eric Fisher & Malcolm Norton are leading with 31 points having won the first round. Richard Cross & Paul Champ remain in second place with 30 points and Jack & Jake move up into 3rd place with 29 points.

Once all 5 rounds are completed and the league established, a knockout will start which will pit first against 32nd, etc., so a good showing in the league ought to give an easier draw in this.

Our Toptime Creative writing group are looking for new members. If you have a passion for writing why not come along. The group are here the 1st Tuesday of the month from 230-4pm. Each month they have different topics to write on and come together each month to discuss each others work.

The popular market in the heart of the Wool Towns relaunches in 2019 The thriving heart of any town or village is often seen at its market place. Many of Suffolk’s finest destinations have history steeped in trade and markets and this is especially true of the Wool Towns.

Lavenham, Bury St Edmunds, Hadleigh and Sudbury all have established and flourishing farmers markets or street markets and now after a four year gap, Long Melford will be relaunching their monthly farmers’ market.

Justine Paul, founder of Suffolk Market Events, which has won national recognition for its farmers markets in Suffolk, is thrilled to be taking on this market; `There have been lots of enquiries and suggestions about re-starting a market in Long Melford. There used to be a thriving farmers market here which was very well supported by local visitors and businesses.

I look forward to reinvigorating this market and I am thrilled that many local residents are very happy about this too. Long Melford is the perfect home for a monthly farmers market and I am sure it will become a real success and bring lots of new visitors to this beautiful historic village.’

The new market starting on Saturday February 9th will be held at Long Melford Village Hall and will have a good mix of quality local producers including The New England Boar Company showcasing wonderful wild boar charcuterie as well as their very popular wild boar sausage rolls, St Botoph’s Brewery with locally crafted beers; Wooster’s Bakery – Will’s bread is already a firm favourite at Bury St Edmunds and Hadleigh markets - and Sue Wooster (mother of Will) who will be bringing her beautiful plants from her nursery, Bellflower near Bury St Edmund’s. East Anglian cheeses will also be featured alongside local honey, Suffolk pork, beef and goat, a range of local vegetables and a small number of exquisite handmade, non-food stalls.
