Nursing Home staff receive accolade Staff at Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, feel honoured to have received a certificate from the Lord Lieutenant for Suffolk praising their “selflessness” and “sense of duty” during the pandemic.

In an accompanying letter to home manager Jan Seal, the Lord Lieutenant, Clare, Countess of Euston, writes: “I would like to thank you for the contribution you have made during the extraordinary and difficult circumstances of the Covid 19 crisis.”

The letter highlights the “innovation, collaboration, courage and generosity” demonstrated by people across the county, describing it as “truly inspirational and uplifting”.

It continues: “Our care homes have been at the forefront of the battle. Thank you for the huge amount of work you have done to care for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.”

The Countess describes it as a privilege to award the Lord Lieutenant’s special certificate of merit for Hadleigh Nursing Home’s “remarkable contribution.”

Jan said: “It’s been a very challenging time for everyone, physically, emotionally and mentally, so it is a lovely thought from the Lord Lieutenant to send us this certificate and letter.

“Staff have been amazing, pulling together as a team, and we have come out the other side stronger.”

She said they were looking forward to developing a memorial garden during the spring to commemorate not just residents who had sadly passed away during the pandemic but also members of the wider Hadleigh community cruelly affected by Covid.

Rotary Club of Sudbury Rotary Round-up

Sudbury Rotary Club’s fund-raising for its chosen charities has been severely impacted in the past year because of Covid restrictions. So, when Sudbury Choral Society decided to offer a Christmas concert in the open air on Market Hill on the Sunday before Christmas, Rotary was able to arrange a street collection to raise funds for the Kernos Centre and St Nicholas Hospice. It was good to see so many people enjoying the singing, and £341 was raised. Our thanks to everyone who so generously contributed that day. It is hoped that more street collections will be possible once the current restrictions ease.

For those of us desperate to see signs of Spring flowers, it has been good to see primroses and snowdrops appearing around and about. Now we can look forward to seeing the crocus and other flowers appear. Many crocus (a few thousand by now!), of course, have been, planted by members of Sudbury Rotary Club. Look out for these purple flowers in places like Siam Gardens, the grassy bank along Melford Road, and (from last autumn’s planting) at The Croft in Sudbury, near the traffic lights.

As mentioned in earlier articles, Rotary members plant purple crocuses as part of their fund-raising to eradicate polio throughout the world.

This global health initiative began over 25 years’ ago, and has ensured that children in developing countries do not die or become disabled by contracting polio. In recent years there have been just a few cases in countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, but Rotary is working hard to ensure that polio vaccination is available to all children who need this and to ‘End Polio Now!’.

So, when you see the cheerful sight of those purple flowers, you will know that they have helped bring better health and life chances to children in far flung countries. The reason for purple is because each child dips their index finger into a purple dye to record the fact they have been vaccinated.

Sudbury Rotary members continue to meet on-line each Monday, from 10 a.m. via Zoom. Plans for February include a social event on the first Monday (these are great fun and very relaxed occasions), on 15 February Vincent Hill will be advising us on internet security and fraud and on 22 February member Glyn Jones will tell us more about his long association with Aviation. There will be another social event on the first Monday in March.

As you can imagine most of the questions were about the vaccination stations opened up across Suffolk and whilst this is probably old news I think they got the message that we were not happy that not all of the ‘stations’ that were providing the jab were either large enough or in the wrong place, having said that the Staff running them were very efficient and competent and need our thanks and support.

At the time of writing there are signs that the infection rate is going in the right direction although it needs to drop a lot more before we can expect to see some loosening of strict regulations which whilst we are all getting exhausted by, nevertheless it’s important that we follow the rules so that we can get back to ‘normal’ kissing and cuddling our family and friends again.

We seem to be finding it difficult to agree with some of the ‘decisions’ coming out from our District Council lately, it seems to us that Babergh District Council are taking advantage of the lockdown and bringing in some changes that in our opinion (the Sudbury Town Council) are not in the best interests of the Businesses or people that we were elected to represent.

But as your Mayor I am trying to be neutral which is becoming increasingly difficult when you feel so passionate about our Town, I know that all of the areas surrounding Babergh have parking charges, but many of them are having second thoughts on whether they are a good thing or not, Sudbury are bucking the trend with 8% of its shops vacant and available to rent/Buy against 13% Nationwide, I don’t have the figures for Suffolk but I suspect they may be closer to the National average than the 8%, some of the reason must be ‘Free parking’ for the first 3 hours. The District Council is also pulling the plug on Sudbury Town Council running the ‘Advice Centre’ from its offices on Market Hill without disclosing what they are putting in its place, this obviously leads to suspicion that its replacement will be considerably inferior to what is provided at the moment, there is some discrepancy between the Town Council and Babergh in the cost of running the service. There is also some disquiet about the sale of some of the land around Belle Vue house including the House itself, but at least the District are in discussion with the Town Council over it.

That is enough of me grumbling at least for the time being, an appeal to all the charities and good causes in and around Sudbury, I still have some ‘Locality Funds’ left, as do many of your District Councillors, so if you have a project that needs funding give me a call and I will try to help out, if not it goes back into the general fund in May, my phone number is 07758673450 or email me at jack.owen@suffolk.gov.uk That’s it for now stay safe, obey the rules and hopefully things will get back to normal soon.

As the CEO of a Sudbury based counselling service, in Suffolk, I wanted to share with you our journey and vision for the future in supporting mental health across our community. JustTalk2019 was established as an independent, non-profit making, arm of my existing company, ExploringU whose focus is to support those with brain trauma and injury.

In addition to supporting those with brain injury, I had become increasingly aware of the need to establish a service, that would offer accessible and affordable counselling to all who needed it. In 2016, I set up a Community Café, in the heart of Sudbury. The Café had a purpose, clients were coming to access low-cost, open-ended therapy – £5 for a 60-minute session. It was called the Just Talk Campaign.

We worked with 13 universities & colleges to get trainee counsellors on board and both the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Counsel for Psychotherapy (UKCP) embraced the concept of the service shop and Counselling Café as ‘a new way of counselling.’

But then, unfortunately, we lost our building and the Café had to find new premises. This resulted in relocating clients back to my existing centre.

Covid-19 has highlighted real issues around mental health, and although support is available through the NHS, wait times can be impossibly long.

Private therapy can be accessed by those who are able to pay, but for many in our community this makes it inaccessible.

One study (COVID-19: mental health and wellbeing surveillance report ) found that adverse experiences, such as COVID-19 illness, financial difficulties or difficulty accessing food and medicine, were having a larger impact on mental health and wellbeing in adults in a lower socioeconomic position. Two further studies within that report found that having a low income was associated with loneliness and increasing levels of loneliness during the lockdown.

Our services are still open, and although we are unable to offer face to face counselling at this time due to COVID restrictions, as soon as we are able to do so, we will be very pleased to open our doors again. Rural Suffolk life creatively captured during lockdown

Rural communities collaborate with dance artists to create a brand new piece on location During lockdown, a Suffolk arts charity joined with DanceEast to produce a creative celebration of what residents in rural Suffolk villages love about where they live.

Brought to life by Casson & Friends performers, #TinyDance Suffolk was inspired by Laxfield, Risby and Combs residents who answered the question “What is your village made of..?”

Their answers were thoughtfully adapted into choreographed movements, which formed a dance piece filmed on location in the three villages.

With choreography by Tim Casson in collaboration with performers Kaia Goodenough & Richard Pye, the film was produced as part of Suffolk Artlink’s ‘Make, Do & Friends’ arts programme.

Carrie Phoenix, Suffolk Artlink Project Officer, explains: “Make, Do & Friends offers creative ways of making and keeping connections, and there’s never been a more important time to stay connected than right now.

“For this part of the programme, we chatted with local residents during visits by the Rural Coffee Caravan, as well as asking people to send in postcards, telling us about what they loved about their village. From feeding ducks and making rosehip syrup to instructions on how to grow juicy pumpkins, this dance piece captures the joys and memories found in the fabric of rural Suffolk living.

“Our full programme of Make, Do & Friends activities continues until March 2021. All activities can be done from home, and we hope to bring people together in ways that are relaxed, creative and enjoyable. We welcome anyone in need of a bit of creativity and connection to take part.”

In line with recent Government guidelines, the arts charity has moved all of its remaining Make, Do & Friends programme online, available digitally at no cost to people living in Suffolk’s rural communities.

From radio drama listening clubs, to online creative get-togethers led by professional artists, all of the activities are free and there is something for everyone.

Sudbury Dramatic Society In Lockdown With the latest news from The Quay Theatre that they will not be opening their doors again before the end of March, it means that Sudbury Dramatic Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tentative plan to kick their 2021 season off in March 2021 with a small cast in a socially distanced one act play on the stage, back in to touch So, what have SDS been doing during the year since The Quay had to close way back in March 2020? “I’m really worried about my elderly relatives being targeted by coronavirus scams - are there any warning signs that I can tell them to look out for?

What should they do if they think that something is a scam?”

Unfortunately, we’ve seen an increase in scams since the beginning of the pandemic, so it’s good to be thinking about the steps you can take to help protect friends and family.

Common scams we’re seeing are about bogus testing kits, coronavirus vaccinations and government refunds or fines. You should watch out for messages about coronavirus from unusual email addresses or phone numbers and shouldn’t click on any links. Be aware that you won’t be asked to pay for coronavirus vaccinations - they are provided for free by the NHS. Here are some general warning signs to look out for: • You suspect you’re not dealing with a real company – for example, if there’s no postal address • You’ve been asked to transfer money quickly or to pay in an unusual way – for example, by iTunes vouchers or through a transfer service like MoneyGram or Western Union • You’ve been asked to give away personal information like passwords or PINs • You haven’t had written confirmation of what’s been agreed If you think something is a scam you should hang up the phone, close the website, or shut the front door. Never feel pressured to make a decision straight away, and don’t give out personal details or money unless you’re certain that they can trust the person. If you feel threatened or unsafe you can ring 999.

Hadleigh Nursing Home residents send letter of support to student nurse struggling in lockdown

Residents at Hadleigh Nursing Home have written a morale-boosting letter to a student nurse struggling with the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

They were prompted by a Facebook plea from Chloe Greet’s mother Emma, who wrote: “My daughter is studying to be a student nurse at Colchester. She is really struggling with the isolation.

“She is at university by herself as everyone has gone home. She has not come home as she is on a placement.

“Here is where I’m hoping you can help. I am looking for people to help lift her spirits through a simple letter.”

Pete Vano, maintenance person at Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, said: “My partner saw the Facebook post and I immediately thought our lovely residents could help.

“They have experienced the isolation of the coronavirus lockdown themselves with family visits having to be stopped for long periods during the past year to protect them from the virus.”

He sat down with a group of residents and included all their messages in a letter to Chloe.

Among them, Yolanda Farthing wrote: “To choose to be a nurse is a most admirable career…I think nurses are God’s angels on earth, you will be in my prayers.”

Pamela Simmons wrote: “Keep up the good work. I have not been able to see my family either. But I have lovely people and nurses looking after me.

We have bad and good days but we are still here to tell the tale, bless you.”

June Ede wrote: “I hope that once this is all over you get to have a lovely big family party. Well done, keep up12:01 the good work.”

Babergh’s Cabinet have agreed further financial support for their leisure partner, Abbeycroft Leisure, to help keep residents fit and healthy well into the future. A £150k loan and £270k grant for Abbeycroft Leisure has been agreed, with the loan to be used first, to cover the period up to the end of March 2021.

The hope is to ensure Babergh and its residents can remain bright and healthy well into the future. The council has already supported the not-forprofit leisure trust since the first lockdown, having paid its £238k annual management fee in advance and provided a £256,000 grant.

Almost half of all council-provided leisure facilities across the country are run by leisure trusts. Details of a £100m funding package from central Government are expected to set out further support available soon, to assist the trusts with their Covid recovery.

Cllr Derek Davis, cabinet member for communities at Babergh District Council, said: “The work Abbeycroft Leisure does to support our districts to remain active and healthy is vital. We know our residents really value what they offer, and their approach to supporting them with their health and wellbeing.

“Thanks to their open book approach around the financial impact of COVID19, we can now put in place a package of measures to support them and their recovery. All while continuing to lobby Government for further funding.

“Staying active will remain as important as ever as we look to recover from the pandemic, and support our residents’ health and wellbeing. This funding will play a crucial role in ensuring we can continue to deliver on our health and wellbeing commitments.”

Abbeycroft Leisure run Babergh District Council’s Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury and Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. They also deliver local community events such as park runs, and the ‘Explore Outdoor’ programme part funded by the council.
