Sudbury Rowing Club Regatta Saturday 4th August 2018 The 138th Sudbury Regatta is scheduled to take place on Friars Meadow, Sudbury, Suffolk on Saturday 4th August. We race along a beautiful stretch of the River Stour. It is a truly idyllic location for a Summer’s afternoon to bring the family and watch the racing. We have a beer tent serving Mauldon’s beer, plus locally sourced food is available in our BBQ and hog roast tents and our renowned tea tent offers a huge variety of home baked cakes. There will be music playing during the afternoon.

Vehicular access to the Sudbury Regatta is via Edgworth Road CO10 2TG and parking is free all day.

Sudbury Regatta continues to be popular with rowers from across the region and beyond and this year the event will play host to more than 30 rowing clubs. The bends in the river are particularly popular with competitors. Racing starts at 8am through to 8pm and we expect to see plenty of exciting contests.

Sudbury Rowing Club would like to extend thanks to the many local people and businesses who continue to support us each year.

We could not run our regatta without all the help we get from these amazing individuals and organisations.

Sudbury Carnival is happening on Sunday 19th August 2018 Hello, my name is Angie Talbot and I’m the chairperson of the Sudbury Town Carnival and I’m very proud to be part of the carnival.

For a number of years Sudbury lost its carnival. But thanks to people like Jack Owen and the small team he has brought together, the carnival is back and as grown in strength.

This years Carnival is on the 19th August.The carnival starts with a procession through the town. Starting at the Delphi Club and finishing at Belle Vue Park.

Inside the park there’s lots of fun to be had by all the family with children rides, bouncy castles, Punch and Judy shows, Lavenham Falconry, games and craft stalls.

Live music by Route 66.

With the help of the people of Sudbury and its visitors it, can go on to be one of the highlights of the year. It’s going to be a great day, plenty of room to sit and listen to the music and watch the events in the arena. We are always looking for new committee members. As there Are lots of things to be done in between carnivals. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sudbury Museum Trust When a church closes there’s the problem of what to do with its treasured contents. Two from the former Trinity United Reformed Church in Sudbury have now found a place in the town’s Heritage Centre at the Town Hall.

One is a silver cup linked to Puritans in 17th Sudbury who risked fines and imprisonment to worship in their own way outside the Church of England.

Many fled to America. The other is a font. The cup was once used to hold wine in the Communion service. For centuries it has been known as the Crossman chalice. In the mid 1600s clergyman Samuel Crossman living at All Saints vicarage defied Church of England rules by ministering to both the congregation of the parish church and a gathering of Puritans. In 1662 he was expelled among 2,000 Anglican clergy who refused to conform, losing both his home in the vicarage and his living. The hymns he wrote are still sung today.

Since then the chalice has been kept by Nonconformists, finally by Trinity church in School Street which closed in January and is for sale. Other early nonconformist churches, including those of Baptists and Methodists, survive in Sudbury as does that of the Society of Friends better known as Quakers. They are among those featured in a digital screen presentation showing buildings past and present used for Christian worship over a span of 1,000 years.

The Heritage Centre installation also displays a small wooden font from Trinity Church that dates back to the time when it was known as Trinity Congregational. The font was given to the church in School Street by the family of Private Leslie Everett killed in 1944 fighting in Burma. He was a Sunday School teacher there. The Centre is open during normal office hours on weekdays and on Saturdays from 10am-2.30pm.

Friars Street Congregational chapel was once held the Crossman chalice. It was built by the Nonconformists in 1895 and seated 2,000 people - a measure of its membership. Numbers dwindled and it was demolished in 1964 but the huge manse building for the minister survives as an office building.The newly closed Victorian United Reformed Church in Church Street was built by a breakaway group.

Nesting boxes for swifts have been installed in St Peter’s in Sudbury in the hope it will spur more churches to follow suit.

Sudbury Common Lands ranger Adrian Walters has personally paid for four boxes and an electronic call system, which were placed in St Peter’s earlier this month.

The church has installed the boxes because nesting sites for swifts are disappearing. The birds have traditionally used the gaps and holes under roof tiles and in gable ends of older buildings but as a growing number of these buildings have been restored, so nest sites have been harder to find.

Swift numbers are in steep decline - according to the Swift Conservation group UK numbers have halved in the past 20 years.

Church towers have been identified as good places to provide new nesting sites for swifts because of their height and louvred windows, which enable access to the birds.

Mr Walters and St Peter’s worked with the Churches Conservation Trust, nest box maker John Stimpson, and Suffolk Wildlife Trust swift advisor Edward Jackson to install the boxes. Recordings of swifts’ calls have been played from the tower to attract the birds and 11 swifts have already been seen circling the building, investigating the site.

Swifts typically stay in the UK until the end of August before migrating to their African homelands for the winter. It is hoped they will return to Sudbury next summer and begin nesting in the boxes.

If the boxes are adopted, the Friends of St Peter’s intends to install miniature CCTV cameras in future years, so that the development of chicks may be viewed from inside the church.

Mr Walters said: “As I go about my duties on the riverside and around town I see parties of swifts actively looking for nesting sites. As we insulate and seal our houses more and more swifts continue to lose the nesting places they need, which is a considerable part of the story of their precipitous decline over the past twenty five years.

“This, however, is not ‘job done’. I hope that this is just the beginning of a growing awareness of how easy it is to help these incredible birds that will spend three years in the air when they fledge before touching down again to breed. The birds that are now being attracted to St Peter’s church tower by the recorded calls may well occupy the four boxes when they arrive back from Africa next spring. Right now they are checking these out.

“We have lots of grazed riverside habitat generating the insects that swifts need to sustain themselves and their broods - now all we need is more boxes to accommodate them. Let’s hope for interest from other sources in putting up boxes for these supreme aerial masters.”

Peter Gray, vice chair of the Friends of St Peter’s added: “In stating our aim that St Peter’s should be open to and used by all sectors of the community, we did not envisage it extending to wildlife. But given the plight of these impressive birds, it is our pleasure to offer them refuge.

“We hope that this example will inspire swift nesting boxes to be installed in other churches and public buildings, as well as private houses.”

On Saturday 23rd June a Barn Dance organised by Dance with Us Suffolk raised £405 for the Upbeat Heart Charity. The evening was a great success with the live band from Stowmarket “Pluck N Squeeze” playing traditional country dances. The hall was decorated with bunting, the tables with corn and wheat table decorations; there was a large representative wagon wheel with lights at the back of the stage and a large Suffolk flag.

Saddles and horse hoes adorned the stage to complete the transformation.

A big thankyou to the Suffolk Outlaws who have regular Country & Western nights at the Delphi Centre for the loan of their stage drapes.

Initial background country music by Mayfair Music complete with farmyard sounds made for a great atmosphere. The Barn Dance dances were quite tricky but great fun with the bands caller keeping us all in time. A short set of line dancing which Sharon from the Sudbury Swing Jive dancing gave everybody a chance to learn a new line dance including the popular Rio Cha Cha. The ploughman’s supper went down well with all the food from local Suffolk suppliers including Suffolk Farm Cheeses, bread from one of the best bakeries in Suffolk Sparling & Faires of Lavenham , pickled onions from Ranger Produce of long Melford and homemade chutney.

A monologue from Upbeat member Brian Richell (Elmo) made everyone laugh during the interval with some interesting verses incorporating the band title “Pluck N Squeeze” !! not too risky.

The next fund raiser for “Upbeat” will be the end of year Masquerade dance at THE DELPHI CENTRE to be held on 29th December 2018 and feature the 17 piece band from Ipswich “Swing Machine” playing music through the decades from the 1920’s to the 1960’s, Tickets are available from the Sudbury Tourist Office priced at £16.50 each; or from www.dancewithussuffolk.co.uk

Meet Up Mondays We all know loneliness is devastating but did you know that as many as 1 in 10 of us say the TV is our main companion? MeetUpMondays™ was started by Mick Dore of The Alexandra pub SW19 in January 2018 as he was fed up of reading about loneliness and decided to DO something. He is well worth following on Facebook and Twitter as he is an inspiration! So what did he do? Well, he began offering a couple of hours of free tea, coffee and sandwiches on a Monday lunchtime encouraging those in the local area who ‘are fed up with their own company’. This may be because they are a new mum, a home worker, out of work (for whatever reason) or an elderly person or couple who have started to feel isolated.

Since the launch The Alexandra has simply changed lives.

Ann Osborn, Director of the Rural Coffee Caravan fell over MeetUpMondays’ on Twitter and thought it was an absolutely brilliant idea. They befriend people and offers them access to the information they need to empower them so the fit with was perfect! Then Ann met Sally, Good Neighbour Scheme development officer for Community Action Suffolk, another perfect fit as Sally’s work with Good Neighbour Schemes is focused on communities working together to ensure that everybody has somebody to call upon in times of need.

At last, some good news for constituents on the controversial matter of housing. Of all the issues that face our communities, I can think of none more controversial – including Brexit – than where homes should or should not be built. But for the time being at least, we have just gained a little more control over that difďŹ cult decision making process.

Babergh’s biggest issue with housing developments has been the ďŹ ve-year land supply planning policy. Since April 2017, Babergh has not been able to demonstrate this supply which left them open to speculative planning applications that would not normally have been accepted under their local planning policies. In fact, I recently held a parliamentary debate on this policy to outline the issues that we have faced.

As such, I am delighted that Babergh District Council has now announced that they have restored the ďŹ ve-year land supply bringing much greater control over planning decisions back to local people. It also means that local policies once again become the priority in considering applications, including neighbourhood plans, ensuring the development is decided by our locally elected representatives, instead of increasingly relying on the planning inspector over whom we have little or no accountability.

Of course, it is worth stressing that does not mean we will suddenly stop seeing new homes built in Babergh. Nor will ‘unpopular’ development cease since homes have to go somewhere. What we need to see is a sustainable level of delivery, a sweet spot resulting in neither disproportionately developing in inappropriate locations nor seeing any single proposal for new homes opposed and defeated.

We should also remember that developers could potentially appeal the presence of a ďŹ ve-year land supply and so it remains vital not only that Babergh continues to work to deliver its joint local plan, but that communities continue to prepare neighbourhood plans. If anyone in a village considering a neighbourhood plan thinks this positive change is reason not to produce one I would argue the opposite: this is the ideal time to get a neighbourhood plan in place so that communities are ready if at some point in the future we once again lose our ďŹ ve-year land supply.

‘Abi’s Footprints’ receives Funding from Suffolk Community Foundation (Joy Abbott Fund) Abi’s Footprints’ is a Sudbury-based community project run by the charity New Life Church Community. It supports lone parents and families struggling in difficult circumstances to meet the practical needs of a new baby or young child up to the age of three.

We are very grateful to receive a grant of £2992 from Suffolk Community Foundation’s Joy Abbott Fund. It is mainly for accommodation costs at the Stour Valley Business Centre which kindly offered us the space rent-free for the first 4 months following our relocation there in March.

We are delighted that the grant, together with recent donations from ‘Meeting Needs’ and New Life Church, will cover all our ‘set-up’ and first-year running costs at this new location.

The project has developed steadily since it was launched from a lock-up storage container. Our committed team of volunteers now enjoys much-improved facilities for sorting, storing and preparing gifts ready for distribution. Thanks to generous donations of baby items from local people, we are able to provide, free of charge, a wide range of good second-hand (and some new) baby essentials such as a complete Moses Basket starter pack, clothing bundle, buggy, cot, stairgate, toys etc. Anyone in the Sudbury area needing this support can contact us through the their Health Visitor, Storehouse, Sudbury Children’s Centres etc. or direct by phone, email or Facebook message. We welcome parents to come and make their own selection if they wish.

The inspector who visited the Kingsley Healthcare run home on May 15 found the service to be good overall and good in every category, judging it to be safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

The inspection was the first since Kingsley took over the home last year, committing significant investment on improving the building and landscaping the gardens.

The report observes that “people were cared for and supported by staff who knew them well and understood their preferences and dislikes”.

Staff responded quickly to residents’ requests for assistance and always took time to talk to them, not rushing away to perform other tasks.

The report praises the home’s daily activities and observes that staff know what individuals like to do.

Home manager Marie Smale said: “We are passionate about providing outstanding care at Hadleigh Nursing Home and are thrilled to receive such a positive first report.” The inspector reports the positive comments of residents, one of whom told him: “All of the staff are very nice indeed”. Another said: “The staff always respect my dignity and that is very important to me.” The report observes that “people were cared for and supported by staff who knew them well and understood their preferences and dislikes”.

Care plans clearly showed people had been involved and supported in how their care was planned and delivered. The inspector found there were enough staff on duty day and night and observed that robust procedures were in place for recruitment. Staff responded quickly to residents’ requests for assistance and always took time to talk to them, not rushing away to perform other tasks.

The inspector found that systems are in place for on-going training; and one member of staff told him that the most effective training they had completed was by wearing an age simulation suit (Gert). He explained this enabled the wearer to experience what it felt like to have conditions such as visual impairment, hearing loss, compromised mobility and tremors. The report praises the home’s daily activities and observes that staff know what individuals like to do. “We observed a person happily walking round the garden with a member of staff.

This person was smiling and chatting about the plants and we saw the staff member cheerfully interacting with them,” said the inspector.

The report notes that residents were complimentary about senior staff at the home.

After a turbulent few years in the solar market, the numbers are again beginning to add up for households interested in generating their own renewable energy.

Despite the reduced Feed in Tariffs, rising retail electricity prices and lower prices for solar modules, solar is again an attractive offer for the UK domestic market. Typically, domestic users can expect their investment in solar panels to be repaid within 10 years.

Community approach to support people to be more physically active Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are excited to announce a new three-year joint project with Suffolk Sport. Active Wellbeing is a bespoke approach to help those who are physically inactive into more activity.

General levels of physical activity among older adults are low, leaving a high proportion insufficiently active to benefit their health. Typically, activity levels decline to even lower levels as people progress through old age and are often lower still amongst those living alone.

As well as being positive for social inclusion, being regularly physically active can help to reduce the risk of dementia by up to 30%, hip fractures by up to 68% and depression by up to 30% as well as prevent and manage over 20 chronic conditions and diseases.

Active Wellbeing will work closely with the identified GP surgeries and Patient Participation Group members to develop partnerships with wider community organisations such as the Women’s Institute, Parish Councils, local churches, OneLife Suffolk and many more.

Active Wellbeing will initially work with Fressingfield & Stradbroke Medical Centre in Mid Suffolk and with The Long Melford & Lavenham Practice in Babergh, celebrating and linking to the great work already taking place within those communities. They will also support the development of new activities where they are needed to help older people to become and stay, active. A Physical Activity Advisor, with the help of health professionals and the community, will identify and work with those people most in need of support by delivering clinics in the community. In the years ahead, Active Wellbeing will identify new areas within the districts to work with.

The Physical Activity Advisors have a wealth of experience supporting people who have genuine concerns or barriers to becoming more active such as cost; transport; management of chronic pain; no one to go with, etc., and will use this knowledge to guide people appropriately into activity.

There will be a range of options available from free lifestyle activities such as walking and gardening, to group classes such as Tai Chi and Pilates.

Ben Jackson, Senior Development Officer, Health and Wellbeing at Suffolk Sport commented about the new project “We are delighted to be working with Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils on the Active Wellbeing Project. Suffolk Sport is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of people across Suffolk, inspiring everyone to be more active. Working with GP surgeries in rural areas, we can support staff and patients and create more active communities.”

Active Wellbeing will be officially launched with a welcome event in each locality. On the 16th July between 10:00 – 11:30, Nick Pringle, Physical Activity Advisor for Babergh, will be at The Long Melford Library while Annie Groves, Physical Activity Advisor for Mid Suffolk will be in Fressingfield Methodist Church between 11:00 – 13:30 on the 17th July.

Steve Le Grys Landscape & Portrait Photography Steve Le Grys is an award-winning photographer based in the Sudbury area.

He has won awards and worldwide acclaim from The Royal Photographic Society and The Association of Photographers.

After a 40 year career in the print and graphic industry Steve turned his attention towards his passion, photography. He enrolled as a mature student at the University of East London and graduated with a BA (Hons) in Photography in 2017. The work that Steve produced as an undergraduate enabled him to be accepted in to the ranks of The Royal Photographic Society as an Associate Member.

Steve says “I have a vast amount of experience in the photographic and graphic industries. The areas worked in have varied from Aviation to Underwater (I am a qualified underwater dive photographer).”

“My passion and now my specialist area of Photography is the Victorian process called Wet Collodion. I use a large hand built Victorian style plate camera to produce an unusual and very aged looking black and white photograph. These photographs are difficult to create but produce an image which cannot be re-created using a digital camera and a computer.”

Steve is available for private commissions such as a private portrait or a celebratory occasion and he welcomes the chance to talk to people, to explore their own personal requests making their pictures special and personal.

SEH BAC charity initiative a hit with both staff and community Award-winning home improvement firm SEH BAC is well known for its work in the community – and another staff initiative has been given the thumbs up.

Every SEH BAC member of staff can take a paid day off work to do community work and support worthy causes.

This could be anything from giving your local scout hut a lick of paint, volunteering at a local community centre, or helping with a charity event.

It’s all thanks to an initiative from SEH BAC’s parent company, the Ipswichbased One Group Construction and it’s One Group Foundation.

One Group Construction is a £160M group of specialist construction companies which complete major infrastructure and construction projects across the UK. Employees from across the group have taken part in charitable golf days, competed in marathons, volunteered at soup kitchens and thrown themselves into charitable walks and treks, all for worthy causes.

Since its launch in August 2017, the foundation has supported more than 33 Foundation Days and by doing so, One Group have played a part in raising £142k for various charities, not by donating money themselves but by employees raising money through Just Giving pages and charity days.

Karla Bryan from SEH BAC, who volunteered at a homeless shelter, said: “I had a really enjoyable day and it was a very rewarding experience to be able to help those in need. Since then I have set up my own soup kitchen in Southend called One Love Soup Kitchen to help people who are sleeping rough.

“The Foundation Days are a wonderful idea and it is great that SEH BAC see charity work and volunteering as an important and integral part of what they do.”

Do you recall I wrote about our ex-battery hen’s regular tour of inspection recently? I swear Gertie thinks she should eat at the table with the rest of us! The other day I caught the cheeky chicken on the kitchen chair, cranning her neck to see if dinner was ready. There’s more! Later that day William the cockerel came strutting into the kitchen. Anyone would think this was an animal sanctuary!

There was much reminiscing about England’s football success in 1966 and the heat wave of 1976 last month. Very interesting providing we dogs don’t have to wait on a hot pavement during the conversation. Even my Mexican roots don’t protect my little pads in that weather! Despite the heat, the Melford Street Fair was a good day for all concerned. Let’s hope some volunteers come forward to continue this great annual event.

We have been invited to the Beth Chatto Gardens Wildlife Fair, Elmstead Market CO7 7DB. This is a beautiful venue for two days of fun family events on 22nd and 23rd August.

September is busy starting with a stall at the Wickham St. Paul Dog Show, CO9 2PT at 1pm on the 8th. Sudbury & District Royal British Legion Meetings continue to be well supported and in April Karl Lumbers told us about his work with the Trinity House Lighthouses a very interesting and informative talk. Similarly our June Speaker was Sean Hedges talking about his work making Bronze Busts, showing some of his Busts and explaining the various stages he took to finalise the finished Bust.

The August meeting will be a talk entitled ‘The Great War Symphony 1 9 1 8 2018. Very apt for this the 100th year of the end of WW1. September we also have a Speaker this time entitled ‘Naval Actions at Zeebruger and Ostend April/May 1918.

Non members are welcome to join us at the Snooker Club 7.30p.m. start.

The Ormiston Festival of Remembrance will be held on 16th October and we shall be returning there for a Schools Commemoration Concert on 22nd November being that all our local Schools have committed to attend doing their own various song/dance/ readings etc. Tickets for both nights will be £5 each including refreshments during the interval for both nights. Ormiston will be selling tickets together with the Tourist Information in the Library as well as from ourselves nearer the dates.

On Thursday November 8th Sudbury Branch will be laying crosses on the WW1 Graves at Sudbury, Gt Cornard, Lt Cornard, Newton and Gt Waldingfield Church yards. This will be done at 11.00 a.m. and will be involving local School Children.

There will also be a WW1 Display in the Heritage Centre during the two week period of Remembrance being 27th October through to Remembrance Sunday on 11th November. The Poppy Launch will take place in Sudbury on Saturday 27th October with the Branch Gazebo displaying Poppy items. Poppy Collectors will be in the Town and in the local Supermarkets during this whole period. If you have never collected for the Appeal and would like to volunteer to collect then let the Secretary know as below.

To round off these Commemorations a special Dinner has been arranged at The Bull Hotel Long Melford for Saturday 24th November starting at 6.45 sit down and being served 7.00 p.m. Tickets will be £30 to include WW1/WW11 Music and entertainment plus Port for the Toast and there will also be a Grand Raffle. The Town Hall have received almost 10,000 knitted Poppies which will be set onto cam nets and cascaded down from St Peters Church a real spectacle! A big thank you to everyone for knitting the Poppies for this very special occasion and the ‘fixing on’ of the Poppies will take place every Thursday from 10.00 a.m.-4.00 p.m. when you will be welcome at the Town Hall to help.

Remembrance Sunday actually falls on the 11th November this year and the Branch will be present at the Gt Cornard Church Service. A Parade to be led by the Phoenix Marchers will form up in Bures Road opposite the Kings Head to leave at 9.50 a.m. for a 10.15. a.m. Service.

The Sudbury Parade will form up on the Market Hill to leave at 2.00 p.m. for a Service at St Gregory’s Church 2.30p.m. start. The Colchester Pipes and Drums will lead this Parade and after the Service and Wreath Laying the Parade will again form up to return to the Market Hill via North Street.

Our meetings are held on the second Monday of the month in the Snooker Club North St Sudbury 7.00 for 7.30 p.m. start. Membership is open to anyone - you do not have to have served in the Forces. News from Sudbury Rotary The traditional handover from one Rotary President to another took place at the end of June, when President Lesley Ford-Platt passed on the badge of office to her husband Tony Platt -possibly the first occasion when a husband and wife team have followed each other in the role of Club President.

Music at the handover was provided by a jazz duo, Robert and Terry, who added a relaxed atmosphere to the day’s events, which started with a welcoming glass of Pimms.

As we leave behind July, members and their friends will have enjoyed their annual ‘outing’ for lunch at Sudbury Cricket Club, and also visited the Learning Bus at Pot Kiln School, which Rotary members helped fund. This special place creates an additional classroom and ‘nurture’ space. A visit from the District Governor, David Simpson, will take place on 6 August, and a tea party is planned on 18 August at the home of Rtn Brian Tora and his wife Elizabeth in Little Waldingfield.

Past President Lesley is looking forward to being able to hand-over funds raised during her year in office to local charities, Compassion (supporting the victims of domestic abuse) and the Kernos Counselling Centre.

Rotary is open to people from all backgrounds and we would welcome more of you to join us.

Unlike the image which you might have of your local Rotarians, we are not a group of serious, professional, older gentlemen in suits(!), but a mix of women and men of all ages and interests. The one thing which brings us together is our wish to support our community, here and through overseas projects, and to enjoy fun and friendship while doing so. Our weekly lunches, on Mondays at the Mill Hotel, give an opportunity for us to hear from speakers on topics of interest, follow up on matters concerned with our local activities, and to enjoy each other’s company.

New dedicated clinic in Hadleigh offering earwax removal Every year in the UK, approximately 2.3m people experience problems with earwax and need to have it removed.

With more and more GP Surgeries reducing their wax removal services with long delays to get an appointment, one local hearing care company has joined forces with a Hadleigh healthcare centre to try and help.

The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at Health By Design on Hadleigh High Street, will be offering both ear syringing and microsuction from Thursday 16th August 2018.

The private ear care clinics will be held every other Thursday morning between 9am-1pm.

Opposition successfully “call in” Suffolk County Council School transport cuts

On Tuesday 19 June, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet voted to change the Home to School Transport policy so that only children travelling to their nearest school would receive free transport. The changes are due to be phased in from September 2019.

As you may be aware, I and my colleagues within the Liberal Democrat, Green and Independent Group have been opposed to this policy change since it was announced in September 2018. There has also been very vocal opposition from schools, parents and carers across Suffolk.

Following the Cabinet meeting, opposition councillors from all parties united to “callin” the decision. We have received confirmation from the Monitoring Officer that the concerns presented within our call-in are valid.

This means the decision has been put on hold until 9 July, when the council’s Scrutiny Committee will investigate further. If they determine that the Cabinet did not have enough information to make an appropriate and informed decision, the matter will be referred back to Cabinet to reconsider at a later date.

The “call-in” was successful on three fronts: 1. There is concern at the quality and reliability of the financial modelling; 2. Whether the Cabinet were fully informed of the role of the Consultation Institute; 3. Whether there was enough analysis of the experience of Essex County Council, who implemented a similar policy in 2013.

Consultation launched on future commissioning of specialist education services Suffolk County Council have launched a consultation into the commissioning strategy for the development of Suffolk’s specialist educational provision.

Demand for specialist education places in Suffolk for children with SEND continues to grow, and currently the county council has a much lower number of specialist education places than other similar authorities. This means that many children in Suffolk are forced to travel out of county to access the education provision they need – and often Suffolk County Council foots the bill.

At a time when the Council is attempting to reduce the amount of free home to school transport it provides over fears of escalating costs, it is vital that we begin to provide more SEND provision within Suffolk.

Existing policy which determines how resources are deployed, known as the Suffolk Highway Maintenance Operational Plan (HMOP); How the location of potholes on the road is considered alongside the width and depth, recognising the impact they can have on cyclists and motorcyclists; How utility companies coordinate roadworks and are held to account for their actions; How residents, councillors and businesses are informed about road repairs and how they can access information; Financial control and contract management; How town and parish councils can work closer with Suffolk Highways to make the best use of their local knowledge, skills, money and time.

Suffolk residents urged to be Scam Aware As part of Scams Awareness Month, Suffolk Trading Standards is urging Suffolk residents to not miss a trick and be scam aware.

Last year, Citizens Advice found that almost three quarters of people surveyed had been targeted by a scam in the previous two years (2015-17). It’s estimated that only 5-15% of scams are reported, and some people don’t even know they have been scammed.

Scammers target people by post, phone calls, text messages, emails, and they even visit homes without any warning. Scams come in a variety of forms, from lottery scams to fake ticketing and emails, but ultimately a scam is any attempt to fraudulently obtain money or something else of value.

While new scams crop up all the time, the tactics of scammers remain the same, they will often:

Contact you out of the blue Ask for personal or financial details Put you under pressure to respond quickly Ask you to keep their offer secret Make promises or offers that sound too good to be true

The Phoenix Collective The much loved and supported Phoenix Players at the Quay Theatre in Sudbury continues this September under a new name and a new director.

Rachel Bennett who has had a career in inclusive theatre for over 20 years, promises to work hard to build on the strengths and friendships that the current group offers. The Phoenix Collective will take place on Fridays at the Jetty down at the Quay and begin on 21st September from 4.15/6.15pm “I am very excited to be given this opportunity to work within the Sudbury community to provide inclusive, fun and engaging theatre experiences for all. Theatre is very much a process and whilst we may celebrate our success at the end with a show, along the way it can provide very real opportunities to develop in many areas including confidence, creativity, teamwork, communication and life skills.”

The group celebrates all abilities and whilst experience is not necessary, enthusiasm is !! If you’ve never tried drama before but fancy a go contact us for further information. Whatever your different needs are they are not a barrier to creativity. A free trial session is available and if you need to bring someone to support you they can attend free of charge (but will be gently encouraged to take part in workshops as our platform is very much a united one.)

In the autumn term we will be working towards a performance of The Snow Queen which will be a multi sensory piece of theatre that we will work together to devise.

A family-run business now in its 80th year, Boxford (Suffolk) Farms won `Soft-Fruit Grower of the Year’ at the Horticulture Week National Awards in London’s Mayfair on Thursday 28th June.

The judges cited the company’s long-term business strategy and innovation-led vision, which has resulted in a remarkable year-on-year growth in turnover of 30%, as key factors contributing to the win.

Environmental and technological innovation has been a key driver for the family business.

The development of heated glasshouses as well as tabletop production has helped improve efďŹ ciency and State-of-the-art, award-winning fruit growing extend the growing techniques at Boxford (Suffolk) Farms season to allow for fruit production both earlier and later in the season from March to November, satisfying market demand for both early and late UK fruit.

The on-farm Anaerobic Digestion plant produces electricity and heat by turning maize, out-graded fruit and apple pomace into energy. More people urged to become foster parents to provide secure homes for vulnerable children An impassioned plea has been made for more people in the East of England to consider becoming foster parents.

Nationally, a growing number of new fostering families are needed to ensure the provision of stable, secure and loving homes for children. Figures by the Fostering Network showed an additional 610 foster families were needed in the East of England in 2017. According to statistics from the Department of Education 80 more children in Cambridgeshire came into care during 2017 then left and in Suffolk 35 more children came into care than left.

Now, Cheryl Jillions, Registered Manager, at Little Acorns Fostering based at Great Wratting, near Haverhill, has made an impassioned call for more people in the East of England to consider becoming foster parents. Little Acorns Fostering is an agency, which recruits, trains and supports foster parents. The agency works closely with local authorities and social services in south Cambridgeshire, west Suffolk and north Essex to ensure children are placed with the most appropriate family to meet their individual needs.

She said: “We really do need more people to come forward to provide loving and supportive family environments to children and young people across the East of England. “One of the issues we face is some people are put off fostering due to the horror stories they hear but for each negative there are hundreds of wonderful stories. There is a stigma attached to children in care as they can come from difďŹ cult backgrounds, however nine times out of 10 when a child is taken out of a difďŹ cult situation and looked after by a loving family the turnaround in their behaviour is tangible, sometimes remarkable. “These children need a chance as they often come from physically, sexually and mentally abusive backgrounds and they need people to step forward and help them. Our foster carers often comment on how satisfying it is helping a child or young person achieve happiness and doing something positive with their lives.

Beach day at St Gregory’s School Children and families from St Gregory’s Primary School in Sudbury, enjoyed a fun-ďŹ lled day at the beach last Friday... with no need to travel further than their own playground! Paddling, sandcastles, icecreams, seaside games and a professional Punch and Judy show were all part of the fun at the school’s self-styled ‘Beach Day’. “Teaching young children is all about memorable experiences,â€? said nursery teacher, Clare Gray. “Both early years classes are learning about the sea this term, but it’s a long journey for our youngest children, so we thought ‘why not bring the beach to school?’ “ Staff at the school served ice creams and the sun broke through the clouds for the occasion. “Learning outside is an important part of the curriculum here at St Gregory’s,â€? Mrs Gray, added. “Last week saw the completion of a fantastic new outdoor classroom in the school grounds, in addition to our award-winning quiet garden, weekly Forest School sessions and free ow access to outdoor learning for our younger pupils. “We’re very lucky to have such great outdoor facilities in the heart of town.â€?
