Doors open on Sudbury’s Virtual High Street Shoppers can now enjoy the very best of Sudbury from the comfort of their front room as the new look Virtual High Street opens its “doors”.

With over 50 high street shops, cafes, market traders and businesses signed up, the Sudbury Virtual High Street provides a single online location for shoppers to access local shops and restaurants while at home or on the move before they visit the high street in person.

Retailers on the Sudbury Virtual High Street can use the platform to enhance their in-store offer by introducing services such as pre-order or click and collect. Each store page can be personalised to include product listings, gallery and store opening

times on their personalised store page. There is also an option to include online purchasing and delivery depending on the retailer’s requirements.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, many retailers explored new ways to reach their customers and offer their services in new ways and the Virtual High Street provides a platform for businesses to expand their offer online.

Created as part of the Sudbury Vision partnership and supported by Babergh District Council and Sudbury Town Council, the aim of the Virtual High Street is to help businesses keep connected with their customers and encourage them to shop local.

The Virtual High Street concept has built upon an

initiative launched by Sudbury Town Council during the COVID-19 lockdown, with more functionality for businesses and ease of use for businesses.

Commenting on the Virtual High Street, Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council cabinet member for economic growth said: “This year has been incredibly challenging for high streets up and down the county and we wanted to help our businesses to stay connected with the customers and reach a wider audience through the Virtual High Street. “We want to encourage more people to visit Sudbury and enjoy the fantastic independent shops on offer. The Virtual High Street provides an opportunity for shoppers to see what is available and plan ahead before the visit.�

The Virtual High Street will initially run as a pilot with retailers signing up for free. Once retailers are onboard, they will be guided and supported to manage their own page to promote their products, offers and services.

Ellie Stock Bishop, the owner of Nell & Green Botanics on East Street said: “Our new shop had only been open 2 days when the Government announced lockdown. We embraced the opportunity to invest in our online presence, build our e-commerce platform, free local delivery service and build our social media – we wanted to get our name out there.�

The Virtual High Street has been developed by local software developer Ellis Heighes who founded Queue Technology Ltd in 2019. Based at the Innovation Labs in Stowmarket, Queue Technology Ltd develop a range of B2C technology solutions.

The Mayor writes...

Towards the end of my September report I made a brief reference to St Peters, since then St Peters has been awarded a Lottery grant which will enable them to make a major refurbishment of the church to enable them to become a major event venue, which is something this Town needed since the demise of the Delphi Centre in July. So, congratulations to all those involved in putting together the case for the grant, which required the support of the Town Council and the Church of England commissioners.

Unfortunately, this year as a result of COVID-19, the Poppy Appeal and remembering those who gave their lives or suffered life changing injuries defending our liberty, will take a very different shape this year. There will be a 2 minute silence at 11am on the 11th November outside of the Town Hall.

There will be no Parade from the Market Hill to St Gregory’s Church and no Service in St Gregory’s, instead there will be a wreath laying service at the War Memorial on the croft. The Garden of Remembrance outside St. Gregory’s Church will still be in place for those who wish to place a cross in memory of a loved one. Poppies will be available from static boxes in local shops and supermarkets and poppy sellers will be in town on Market days, Thursday and Saturday, from the 24th October outside the Town Hall and St. Peter’s. St Peters will be open on Remembrance Sunday between 11am and 3pm, full details are available on the Sudbury Town Council website.

The COVID-19 Pandemic is continuing to play havoc with our lives and cases are gradually creeping up in Suffolk. In general, I believe the people of Sudbury have behaved very responsibly which shows in the number of people affected. Please remember those who are on their own, if you know of anyone in those circumstances please let me know so that we can get in touch.

The Sudbury Steering group met on the 28th September 2020 and were presented with some options for Belle Vue Park, the House and Market Hill.

However, at this stage they are only ideas for consideration, everything is being affected by the virus so I do not expect much to happen until the virus is under control.

Consultation has started again over the Chilton development, a ‘Working Group’ has been set up to consider all of the options for the development of 1150 properties of which 35% will be affordable, Industrial units, Social facilities, a Village Hall complex, Woodlands, water features etc. When EFUBJMT CFDPNF ÙSN UIFSF XJMM CF PQFO DPOTVMUBUJPO with the general public.

Long Melford FC Long Melford Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Geoff Thomas as our new Chair.

Geoff was previously the Chair of Border League club Boxted Lodgers and has a wealth of football experience.

In his playing days, Geoff was in the Youth squad at QPR before going on to play for non-league side Hendon.

Geoff is also a Level 2 FA Licensed Coach and has coached players of all ages at Boxted. He also coached at Halstead Town U18s, Alresford Colne Rangers and Hedinghams United, where he was also Chairman.

Ipswich Building Society and East Anglian hearing care experts, The Hearing Care Centre, have joined forces to help local people with hearing loss who have been impacted by the mandatory introduction of facemasks.

Hearing Care Centre founder and senior audiologist Karen Finch said “When it became mandatory in July that facemasks must be worn, we gave away over 350 “Please speak clearly” badges to help with communication issues for those that wear them by alerting shop assistants, or anyone else they need to communicate ommunicate with, that they have an issue and that clear speech from the other ther person will greatly help. help We were delighted when Ipswich Building Society contacted us to say they wanted to help too by giving away more badges through their branches. It has been shown that wearing a mask does decrease the ability for speech to be understood. This applies for people with normal hearing levels too, so for those with a hearing loss it can be a real problem. People with hearing loss often become quite adept at compensating for it by looking closely at people when they speak, but with the introduction of masks it means that these visual cues have also gone.”

Local couple continue unique vision for rural Suffolk Art Gallery Br Brett Gallery is situated in the pretty Suffolk village of Monks Eleigh. It is Su part of Bridge Farm Barns, a collection pa of several unique and independent ret retail businesses offering the customer an unparalleled selection of distinctive pro products and good service. The ou outlets include a tea room, gift shop, Sa Sarah’s Attic vintage collectables, Ol OliVen quilting and felting as well as a ga garden nursery, the Outrageous Cake Co Company and Lavenham Falconry. It all began life as the family concern of ‘C ‘Corncraft’ in 1970.

One of the founders, Win Gage, opened opene Brett Gallery in 2015 with the aim of promoting the work of locally based artists and crafts people. Primary schools in Sudbury will learn about the silk industry and weaving process as Creative Young Weavers returns – continuing the legacy of Sudbury Silk Stories and weaving the way for future generations.

Sudbury based Creative Young Weavers project, funded by the Arts Council and Babergh District Council, launched earlier this year – with plans for over 60 local school children to take part. Lockdown restrictions put the initiative on hold, but the project can now resume following measures to enable children to participate in COVID secure workshops.

Local textile artist Frin Arnold will also work with children to produce individual and group woven samples, using silk waste material sourced from the local mills.

The initiative builds on existing relationships and momentum from the recent National Lottery Heritage funded project Sudbury Silk Stories – and paves the way for the return of the Sudbury Silk Festival in 2021, following the success of the 2019 event.

An exhibition, showcasing the woven panels created during the project, will be hosted by Sudbury High Street later this year – offering further opportunity to shine a spotlight on the town’s silk tradition which dates back to the 1780s.

We now have an excellent volunteer handy man doing a grand job clearing our neglected courtyard.

To help out we could do with a few strong armed volunteers to help clear the car park and to help out with moving tables etc on a rota basis.

We are also looking for volunteers to do an afternoon shift on our reception on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Shifts run from 1p.m. to 4 p.m.

Christmas Tree Festival St Peter’s Sudbury 9-13 December 2020 It’s entirely possible that there will be no carol services, no Christmas concerts, even no Nativity plays in Sudbury in December. However, Sudbury Rotary Club would like to ‘save’ Christmas in Sudbury and show $PWJE UIBU XF XJMM OPU CF DPXFE BOE MPTF PVS UPXOmT DFMFCSBUJPOT Therefore, we would like to announce the launch of the eighteenth Christmas Tree Festival, to be held in St Peter’s Church between 9 and 13 December and we would love you to take part once again.

Because of the restrictions Covid-19 places upon us, we are having to redesign the event to make it as safe as possible for exhibitors as well as for visitors. Despite restrictions, Joan has secured a place for SESAW at the Christmas Tree Festival in St. Peter’s Church in Sudbury next month. Visitors needing to drive into the districts to shop local, instead of walking or cycling, can now choose to go paperless in the councils’ ticketed car parks.

Thanks to the introduction of MiPermit, Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s shoppers can now help to reduce waste by opting for a digital ticket instead.
