Kersey Christmas Fayre celebrates ten years!

The highly popular and much anticipated, annual Kersey Christmas Fayre, sponsored by Carter Jonas, is back at St Mary’s Church, Kersey complete with new kitchen and toilet facilities. Now in its 10th year, the Fayre will be held on Saturday 23rd November from 10.30 am to 4pm.

As always, there will be ‘Shopping by Candlelight’ on Friday 22nd from 7.00 pm – 9.30 pm with mulled wine, mince pies and the welcome return of Festive Notes Choir singing traditional carols. Visitors to the Fayre at St Mary’s, will find a wide range of high quality and unusual gifts including jewellery, hand made soaps, festive candles and wreaths, kitchenware, gifts for foodies, Christmas cards, gift wrap and lots more.

On Saturday there will also be an opportunity to sample the lunchtime menu, cakes and refreshments at ‘Kersey Café’ – directly benefitting school fundraising. Proceeds from the Fayre will be donated to St Mary’s Church and

School, as well as The Teenage Cancer Trust, the charity devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer.

Admission is £5 for ‘Shopping by Candlelight’ and £2 for the Fayre on Saturday, both payable at the door and including free parking.

The Kersey Christmas Fayre is sponsored by Carter Jonas. “It is a great pleasure to continue to be associated with such a well organised event that generates such a lovely atmosphere and funds for charity. East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) opened its shop in Hadleigh on October 11th, and staff at the charity would like to say a huge thank you to the Hadleigh community for such a warm welcome.

The shop was officially opened at 11am on October 11th by Councillor Nick Ridley from Babergh District Council, and was The shop opening – L-R EACH Chief Executive immediately filled with Graham Butland; Councillor Nick Ridley; eager customers! The EACH Trustee Bob Jones first day’s takings were in excess of £3000, which will help EACH continue their vital care and support of life-threatened children and their families in the local area. The charity has also recruited a record number of shop volunteers, with over 70 people signing up to help. The new shop at 53 High Street, Hadleigh, is the fifteenth EACH shop to open and is also the charity’s biggest shop, stocking furniture as well as high quality items such as clothing, bric-a-brac, books, toys, jewellery, DVDs, household linens and electrical items.

The success of the shop will depend upon the donation of good quality items - so if you’re having a clear-out EACH would love to hear from you! The shop has parking for customers and for dropping off goods. If you have larger items or would like to arrange a house collection please call EACH’s Distribution Centre team on 01842 821620.

The shop is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Saturday, so do pop in, the staff and volunteers would love to see you!

The annual Stoke by Nayland Christmas Fayre is being held this month in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice. There will be a fantastic variety of over 50 stalls, covering everything from foods to jewellery, toys to clothes, kitchen gadgets to garden gifts, leather goods to books! It’s the best place to find all your Christmas gifts under one roof, with prices to suit all budgets.

Our stalls include many old favourites, but lots of new and exciting additions, so it is well worth people coming along to find wonderful gifts, which they won’t find on the high street. The Fayre is being held at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa on Thursday 21st November, from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Entry is £5, payable on the door, which all goes to St Elizabeth Hospice who provide local Hospice care for local people. Free parking is available at the Golf Club.

St Elizabeth Hospice improves life for people living with a progressive illness in East Suffolk and South Norfolk. Its services cost £9.1 million a year to run and it relies on fundraising events, donations and the income generated from its shops to meet the majority of these costs.

French’s Care Haven The evenings are now drawing in and the dark nights will be shortly upon us. The horses at French’s Care Haven will soon be glad of their warm stable and wool blankets (not unlike the way many of us humans feel!!) Lots to report this month, lots of work to be done and always a race against time!

Our good news is that French’s Care Haven are hosting a really fun ‘Eat and Think Quiz evening at the Boxford Fleece Hotel 8-10 Broad St, Boxford, Suffolk, CO1O 5DX. This is a wonderful 15th Century unspoilt Coaching Innand a must for those who haven’t been yet, so put this date in your diary: THURSDAY 28th NOVEMBER £3.50 PER PERSON - timing 7.30 for 8pm start. There will be a raffle and all proceeds will go towards the care of our rescued horses. Stay with your own party or join others, make up a quiz group and make new friends at the same time. This was very well supported last year and was an enjoyable evening so come along, get those brains into gear (you don’t have to be a brain box – questions are general and quite easy (what you don’t know you can make up!)

At the same time don’t bother to cook – for £7 (which is really good value) you can partake in a fish and chip supper with a glass of wine, beer or soft drink, this is completely optional. But hey, who wants to rattle around the kitchen if you don’t have to! When you can ‘Eat Drink and Think’! To further raise funds, you can now sponsor a rescued horse or pony for just £5 a month. For this, you will get their story and a photo – this would make a really unusual Christmas present and at the same time help those animals in need. You can choose which horse or pony you would like to sponsor.

On the subject of helping out, we are also looking for a volunteer who will work closely with us on a PR capacity. This will be an interesting position and would suit someone who loves animals and knows their way around a P.C! Again, contact Jann for details.

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre

What is The Shelley Centre? And who is Ebony?

These questions were asked of me recently and as I tend to forget that some of you may be new to the area or have only recently had access to my ramblings, I’d better explain. I am Ebony and as the more important (well I think so, BABS may not agree!) mechanical horse, I have been entrusted to keep you up to date, via my monthly Blog, with the goings on at The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding (that’s our full name). As an affiliate member of the Riding for the Disabled Association, we operate as an independent Charity providing horse riding and carriage driving therapy for those adults or children within the Hadleigh and surrounding area, who have disabilities. My 12 hairy hoofed friends, ranging in size from the two Shetland ponies to big chaps like Rocky and Jet, not only give our Special Riders the benefit of their rhythmic movement, to stimulate, strengthen and tone their sometimes weak muscles, and to improve their balance and co-ordination skills, but they also offer emotional support, building up self-confidence, independence, and enjoyment to generally improve their overall sense of well-being.

The Riders are all referred to us by their Medical Practitioner, and may come as individuals, with their parents, or as a group from a Care Home or Special School. As all aspects of riding fit in with the requirements of the National Curriculum, children are able to attend during school hours and so continue their education through a different medium. The weekly rides take place in the outdoor arena, where the mounted riders are given exercises to do and games to play, which challenge their balance and co-ordination skills, as well as learning to ride and care for their horse. Sometimes they are able to ride out round the fields and by the river, to places inaccessible to wheelchairs, (and Mechanical horses!), which gives a great sense of freedom and enjoyment. Carriage Driving is also available to those who find it more suitable for them than riding. BABS and I are used to assess the needs of all new riders, to help those who are unable to sit up by themselves - by having a Helper sit behind to support them - and for those too heavy or unbalanced for my Hairy Hoofed friends. Our salaried Stable Manager has responsibility for the care of all of us, and is helped in the running of The Centre by over 90 Volunteers, who give their time freely to help with the rides, maintenance and fund raising. Often the riders need a pony leader and two people walking either side, to ensure their safety, so you may understand why we can always do with more Helpers. The friendly atmosphere and the huge satisfaction gained through watching the Riders achieve their goals, together with several social fun occasions each year, make helping at The Centre a most rewarding experience for the Volunteers. The Centre costs in the region of ÂŁ65,000 a year to run and so support for our fund raising events, donations, sponsorships and occasional grants, are essential and always hugely appreciated.

Forty year-old charity needs help to move forward A much loved town charity, which recently celebrated its 40th year, is making a renewed appeal for new committee members.

Helping Hands - which raises money for, and campaigns on behalf of adults with learning disabilities attending the Sudbury Community Hub (formerly the Sudbury Resource Centre) – enjoyed a bumper party last week to celebrate its 40th year. However, the charity says it is still in need of new committee members to drive it forward following the retirement of several volunteers earlier this year. The charity which has been operational since 1973 - and has supported hundreds of adults with learning disabilities over the years - needs at least four more committee members. Anne Molyneaux, group secretary, said: “Due to a variety of reasons such as age and other commitments a number of our committee members have stepped down this year, which has left us very short on numbers. It is important we replace at least some of these people as a matter of urgency to enable us to remain operational in the longer term. “We are looking for community minded individuals who may have some spare time on their hands. We are particularly keen to attract some younger people on to the committee or maybe people looking to get back into a routine after being out of work for a while. People can learn so much by being involved in voluntary activities such as a range of personal, vocational and organisational skills which will benefit them in their careers and personal lives.”

During the month of November, I am happy to attend to a standard Lasting Power of Attorney appointing no more than two attorneys for a charge of £250 plus VAT for each Lasting Power of Attorney. You will also incur the fee payable to the Public Guardianship Office which reduced to £110 from 1 October 2013. Refer to my column when making an appointment to claim the special rate.

At the end of September, I enjoyed a super classic car rally weekend in Derbyshire. The picture shows me at Chatsworth House the home of the Duke of Devonshire. I was delighted to be able to visit but he was out and I will have to send him a copy of our Column so that he knows what he missed! I was lucky enough to surge through the Peak District in a Bentley Continental T which my chauffeur Christof had at his disposal. The Rally also spent a day at the National Tramway Museum at Crich where a new village has been created to include The Red Lion Pub which was moved from Stoke. The trams ran up and down the main street. I enjoyed a ride on an open Blackpool tram I have previously mentioned my concern for the future of the High Street in Hadleigh. It was sad that the Partridge Farm Shop closed very recently. I used to buy the gorgeous roulades and cheese cakes that were on sale there. Sometimes if we were catering for a party, Maria my housekeeper would ask if we could buy in one of these creations as they are so delicious. I am pleased to say that I have tracked down the lady that makes all of these things and she is Daphne Willis Betts (Tel. 01473 823547) and so do give her a call with your requirements. Many of you have been in touch about my comments concerning the state of the Parish Church in Hadleigh. Indeed, the Rural Dean of Hadleigh with two of his Church Wardens invited me to the Church where they explained plans for the future. It seems that modern trends mean that the Church is to become a communal venue as well as a Church. Whilst I gather that the situation is transitory, I still don’t like to see pool tables and three piece suites amongst what remains of the pews.

Steven Henly Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sport Zahra and Bob have held two fundraising events over the past few months. On 8 May (which would have been Steven’s 26th birthday), there was a Curry Night at the Royal Bengal restaurant.

All those attending were served an excellent range of delicious dishes, prepared to the usual Royal Bengal high standards and enjoyed by all. A cheque for the funds raised from the evening was subsequently presented to Zahra and Bob. Zahra, Bob, Daniel and Philippa would like to thank all the staff at the Royal Bengal for making the event such a great success.

On 31 May, a Quiz Night was held at Hadleigh High School, which attracted a total of 11 teams for 9 rounds of fierce competition. There was also a raffle with some excellent prizes. Many thanks to Adnams Wine Cellar and Partridges Farm Shop for their donations to the raffle. And thank you also to Hadleigh High School for making the Dining Hall available for the evening, and to Mike the caretaker for giving his time to assist us.

Steven was a former student at Hadleigh High School, and was in his second year at the University of Bedfordshire, training to become a PE teacher, when he was afflicted by the rare form of cancer that eventually took his life. He died in July 2008, just a few weeks after his 21st birthday. The Steven Henly Award was set up in memory of Steven, with the aim of recognising and encouraging the level of dedication to sport that Steven himself showed throughout his life; in particular, for people who have tackled and achieved challenging aims or who have had to overcome considerable difficulties in order to succeed.

Lavenham Three-Day Dickensian Christmas Festival and Street Fair 2013 December 6, 7 and 8 Come And Have A Dickens Of A Time! Prize For Best Costume You are all cordially invited to enter into the spirit of Christmas Past and Present and join in the fun of Lavenham's three-day Dickensianstyle festival and street fair on Friday night, December 6, and all day Saturday December 7 and Sunday December 8. Come along dressed as your favourite Dickens character on Friday night and you could win a prize! There will be prizes, too, for best Dickensian-themed shop window and best private home display as the lovely medieval village is turned into a 19th century extravanganza of festive food, fabulous shopping , fancy dress and a fun-filled fairground. It all kicks off at 6pm on Friday outside the famous Guildhall with the traditional celebrity switch-on of the village's Christmas lights. Everywhere will then be instantaneously lit up with thousands of twinkling white lights - a magical sight to see - and the street fair and late night shopping can begin!

This year the festival and street fair, with more than 40 stalls and non-stop entertainment for children, will be held over three days, instead of the usual Friday night and Saturday, due to the great support from local people, neighbouring towns and tourists from all over the world. As usual the old Market Place and the historic Guildhall will be packed with foodies' delights: local wines, ales, cakes, chocolates, beef, cheese, Christmas specialities and spices as well as exclusive gifts of art works, stained glass, photographic prints, sheepskin items, handbags, knitwear, clothes, Christmas wreaths, cards and decorations, plants, cakes, lavender gifts.....and on and on.

On Friday the stalls and shops will be open until 8pm and on Saturday and Sunday you can celebrate and shop until you drop at 5pm. The judging of the Best Dickens Costume will be held on Friday night but that doesn't stop you wandering around all weekend as Miss Havisham or Lady Dedlock, or the Artful Dodger, Oliver Twist, or even Ebenezer Scrooge himself. You don't have to be a Dickens' character, either - just dress up Dickensian- style and you could be a winner!

All the market stallholders, shopkeepers, organisers and local hotel and bar staff have been asked to dress up too. And there will be an oldfashioned mini fairground with a carousel and lots more entertainment for children, including Father Christmas, of course, in his grotto, two donkeys in a manger, balloon artists, Maggot the storyteller ,who was such a comic hit last year, and singers, buskers, musical groups and Christmas carollers. You can eat and drink as you wander Lavenham's lovely streets : mulled wine, hog roast, hot dogs, and other hot foods and drinks will be available. And there will be one HUGE raffle prize this year, so make sure you get a ticket or two.

Other fun events will be taking place in Little Hall, the school, and village hall during the weekend so there will be lots to see and do and enjoy. Hadleigh Young Farmers’ Club Hadleigh Young Farmers Club is made up of around 30 members aged 16 to 30 who meet on a weekly basis. We have a common interest in agriculture, although not all members are farmers. Our weekly programme gives members opportunities to engage in the local community as well as enhancing knowledge and skills. We have had tours, visits and demonstrations from many local companies such as Copella, Jolly Meat, Hollow Trees Farm and Adnams.

There is also a huge social aspect to the club.

We regularly have parties and competitions at weekends. You may have seen us pulling in a Tug of War competition in the ring at the Hadleigh and Suffolk Show, the boys team did so well they went through to the Eastern Area rounds of the competition. Hadleigh YFC also won the Suffolk YFC Rally, which is a day of competitions such as ladies tractor handling, reversing a trailer, building a wall, flower arranging, wheel change, and bale stacking just to name a few!

We have won this for the past 2 years running. With this in mind, as a club we felt it was important that we invested in a gazebo that we could take to the various shows and sporting competitions we attend. Thanks to our local Councillor, Brian Rileys’ kind donation from his locality budget, we have been able to do this! He donated £540 with which we purchased a durable, heavyduty, pop up gazebo with ‘Hadleigh Young Farmers Club’ printed all the way around. We are so grateful to Brian for enabling us to purchase this and can’t wait to take it to all the shows and competitions we attend!

We will return to Hadleigh via Kersey Village, Kersey Vale, Coram Street, and Constitutional Hill, and Duke Street arriving back about 1.45pm. This walk is 9 miles in length and is suitable for all walkers and their dogs.

Pilatesworks4u has now established a permanent studio at Kersey Mill. The studio has been fully refurbished providing a tranquil and relaxed setting to experience all that Pilates has to offer. Class sizes are kept to a maximum of 10 ensuring everyone benefits from the expertise that Jenny and her growing team have to share.

Jenny, who is the founder of pilatesworks4u, is thrilled with the new premises ‘It is so exciting to have a dedicated studio space, I have worked hard to create the right atmosphere in which to experience Pilates and am looking forward to the future here at Kersey Mill.

People come to Pilates from many different backgrounds and for a variety of reasons such as relaxation and flexibility as well as stamina and strength. With the Studio we are able to offer a variety of classes with something for everyone.

Pilates offers huge benefits and I am keen to share those with as many as possible!’ Pilatesworks4u currently offer 12 classes during the week with more additions planned including an 8am, 7pm and 8pm on Wednesdays giving Paige Dent the chance to offer her ‘introduction into the classical Pilates movements’ – these movements take time to perfect but may be familiar to regular Pilates attenders.

Jenny explained ‘The plan is to hold classes most mornings and evenings offering variety for the client – these will include post-natal classes, relaxation, stretch and release classes as well as the classical core Pilates movements.

I am also delighted that Charlotte Dykes from Hadleigh Physiotherapy Clinic will be joining us to offer modified Pilates classes.

Other classes include general, intermediate and advanced. Also on offer are beginners Pilates courses as well as regular 2 hour beginners workshops where you can begin your Pilates journey challenging yourself in the same way Joseph Pilates did to discover your inner strength.

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapists are rehabilitation experts, it is a profession that aims to encourage and support an individual’s return to health following, illness, surgery, disease or injury.

Chartered Physiotherapists are involved in a huge range of care, however here at Hadleigh Physiotherapy we specialise in the musculoskeletal field. Common complaints regularly treated include: • Spinal problems – prolapsed discs, muscle spasm, sciatica, stiff/painful neck and referred arm & leg pains.

• Joint problems - arthritis, injury, pain & swelling, stiffness.

• Injuries – to muscles and ligaments, cartilage and tendons. Repetitive Strain (RSI) and Sports injuries.

• After Surgery – rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery – for example: hip and knee replacements, post fracture, or core and postural work post spinal surgery.

What should I expect? We will undertake a comprehensive assessment of your problem, which will include asking detailed questions about how your pain started, which activities make it worse, or better and more general questions about your health, work, hobbies and sporting activities. The initial assessment will enable us to explain why you have the pain, where it is coming from and enable us to give you an estimate as to the length of treatment required. Treatment options depend on the problem you have, but may include hands on mobilisation, exercises to stretch tight structures, to strengthen those that are weak, to improve balance and correct the way you move.

Reassurance and education is the key to giving you the confidence to return to normal activities. Ultimately, our goal is to make you feel good, strong, and pain free.

How can Physiotherapy and Pilates work together? One of our key objectives is not only to treat your problem, but help prevent it happening again. Here at Hadleigh Physiotherapy we use Pilates to help restore your confidence in the way you move. It is perfect for strengthening weak abdominal, back and pelvic floor muscles, correcting posture and ultimately helping stop or prevent pain and injury by giving you a strong, stable core. The mat work exercises are modified to focus on control, stability and strength.

The aim is to retrain your muscles to fire in the correct patterns post injury, restoring correct muscle balance. 1:1 Pilates sessions delivered here in our newly developed studio, allow you to grasp the key elements to Pilates and have an exercise programme tailored to your individual needs. This knowledge can then be transferred into everyday activities and also help you to get more out of current Pilates classes that you may be attending elsewhere. Our Pilates sessions are suitable for all ages and fitness levels, with small group sessions also available. Charlotte is a member of the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI) which is a leading force in delivering safe and effective Pilates training for Physiotherapists. For the past 11 years she has also been the physiotherapy clinical lead within the Trauma and Orthopaedic department at Ipswich hospital.

Lavenham Christmas Craft Fair Simply events are delighted to announce that on the 9th November we are holding our 'Christmas craft fair' at Lavenham Village Hall, this will be the first time we have visited Lavenham and we are really looking forward to the event. The event is fully booked with over 40 crafters exhibiting their handmade produce to really inspire you for the festive season. The fair will be held over two levels, the main hall, the upper room, so be sure to visit both rooms. There will also be a tempting selection of cakes on offer along with light lunches, tea and coffee.

The 'Christmas craft fair' follows on from a successful 'Autumn craft fair' in Hadleigh last month. The fair has a wide selection of crafters including handmade cards, chocolates, jewellery, textiles, fused glass, soaps and body products, wheat bags, christmas decorations, art, photography and much more.

We have 'Aspen Press' attending with their letterpress cards and stationery, 'Boo Felt' with their felted bunting and decorations, 'JayB-Artworks' with her ink portraits and original artworks and 'Studio Raine' with her silk pictures, canvases and bags, there really is going to be plenty so see and tempt you!

This persuaded my wife Sally and I to make a trip to the Christmas Fair held in Harrogate. It was a bit of a journey but a nice town and nice hotel to stay in overnight.

It was a most impressive trade show with everything anyone could possibly need for Christmas. Being a country boy I was impressed with all that tinsel and sparkle and ended up by agreeing to buy a few pallets of 'top of the range' artificial trees from a particular persuasive salesman. These arrived at the farm and last November we set about making a magical Christmas display. The reality was not quite as good as my imagination, but near enough for a farm job. Unfortunately my enthusiasm for these everlasting trees was not reciprocated by you, our customers, and instead of selling pallet loads, total sales amounted to half a dozen trees.

So I need to get myself out of another fine mess. We need to shift the trees this year. If you feel the need for a classy tree that doesn’t drop in needles however long you keep it indoors by the radiator, with no watering, and will last you for years, come and see us. These trees will be priced to sell! Next time I have a good idea, I think I will sleep on it a bit longer!"

Volunteers are needed to launch a Marie Curie Cancer Care Fundraising Group in Hadleigh The group will help raise vital funds to allow Marie Curie nurses in the area to provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses. This allows them to spend their final weeks, days or hours in their own homes in familiar surroundings with family and friends close by. Each £20 raised enables one hour of free nursing service. Marie Curie currently has 42 Nurses in Suffolk, who work in a 30 mile radius in their community.

Fundraising Groups organise a range of activities from local Daffodil Appeal collections to Blooming Great Tea Parties and quiz nights; they represent the charity locally by encouraging and supporting local fundraising - and have good fun along the way.

Suffolk County Council has added its voice to the chorus of disapproval from those opposed to the proposed ‘tolling’ of the A14. Many of us who live to the east of Huntingdon and Cambridge have suffered the agonies of driving along this dismal route. Now it seems that long overdue improvement can be made, but only if a toll is imposed. This might be alright if there were a reasonable alternative ‘free’ route for motorists, but this is not envisaged. Graham Newman, the Cabinet Member for Roads and Transport has stated in a leaflet recently published by the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce that opposes the proposals:- “We support improvements being made to the A14 but tolling the road will create unfairness. It is a toll uniquely on Suffolk business – and that is an unfair tax on the county. The Government must listen to the voice of business and rethink their tolling proposal.” It does seem wrong to subject East Anglia to this burden. A nationwide road pricing scheme would be a fairer and more environmentally friendly alternative in my view.

Closer to home, in October, the Council started a far reaching budget 16:14 consultation exercise with residents across Suffolk. Cuts to our grant from central government, mean that the County Council has to find savings of £156m over the next four years and needs to listen to the preferences of local residents before finalising its plans. A targeted public survey has been carried out by Ipsos Mori, which will be followed by a series of meetings and fora. A problem with such consultations is that residents are not always clear about the scope of the Council’s activities, which makes informed comment difficult.

It is hoped that by using a professional polling organisation the right questions will be put to consultees.

Greenscape Energy Case Study Mr & Mrs Pettitt, Hadleigh First and foremost, we would like to apologise to anyone who tried to contact us in the first two weeks of October. Following our article in the last edition of the Community News, our phone company experienced some technical difficulties resulting in our customers not being able to contact us. As mentioned last month, in each edition of the magazine we will be focusing on different products and the benefits they can provide. We will also be presenting case studies of existing customers in the Hadleigh area and exploring the reasons why they considered Solar in the first place as well as looking at the benefits they have experienced since having one of our installations put in.

This month, we are focusing on Mr and Mrs Pettitt of Highlands Road in Hadleigh who had an installation fitted by us last October. They have kindly allowed us to visit them to find out how they are getting on since having the system installed one year ago. Mr and Mrs Pettitt first looked at the possibility of getting Solar panels over a year ago and had been contemplating getting some quotes for quite some time. They had realised that despite working hard all their lives, the money they had saved over the years was now sitting in savings accounts and ISA’s, and was simply not performing. The cost of living was increasing and the low interest rates in various financial institutions meant that they were earning next to nothing from ‘traditional’ saving methods. Mrs Pettitt had always been of the opinion that not enough was being done with the natural energy all around us, and so combining the two thoughts, learning more about Solar seemed a natural step.

They obtained several quotes from companies, but ultimately were impressed by our down-to-earth and friendly approach. The fact that we were a local company was also important to them as well as the very competitive prices

quoted, and the fact that we have experienced, qualified tradesmen working on every aspect of the project. Mr Pettitt was himself a former tradesman, working as a Joiner for many years. He particularly appreciated the attention to detail put into the project as well as the cleanliness, precision and neatness of all the work, both on the roof and the electrical work inside the house.

Mr and Mrs Pettitt had a 16 panel (4 kW) system installed on their south facing bungalow with a traditional String Inverter to convert the energy generated by the panels. In many ways, theirs is an ‘ideal home’ for Solar. After one year of having the system in operation, Mr and Mrs Pettitt have received nearly £700 from their energy company for the electricity generated and have noticed a massive drop in their utility bills. They also had an Immersun device installed later in the year by ourselves. This is a device which sends the surplus electricity to the immersion heater to heat hot water for free. We will go into more detail about this piece of technology in a later edition. The effect of the system overall has “been a revelation” according to Mrs Pettitt, as they have both their Gas and Electricity with the same company, and their last quarterly bill was for less than £5 for the two utilities combined. In fact, the system worked so well during the summer that they were actually able to turn off their Gas completely for several months. Even now in October, they only have to have their Gas on for about 1 hour a day. Mr and Mrs Pettitt are simply thrilled with the installation. They say that they are very pleased to have made the decision to have had Solar put in by us and that they would recommend making the move to Solar to absolutely anyone. News from Whatfield School

The new autumn term started with excitement, 3 new reception children began their school life at Whatfield, and made an excellent start. The children had lots to look forward to in the coming term, in addition to the usual curriculum they had Forest Schools on Fridays (outdoor muddy fun for all), Dance Club, Sports Club, Tag Rugby the new KS1 outside area and Cookery lessons to name but a few.

It has been highly publicised in recent months both nationally and locally that Suffolk as a county was not meeting the standards expected by Ofsted. Whatfield was last inspected in 2011 and was graded satisfactory.

We were expecting a call and it came on the 18th September, the Ofsted Inspector would be in our school on the 19th for 2 whole days. We knew we had worked so hard over the past 2 years to work on the areas noted in the previous inspection as requiring improvement. The teachers, teaching assistants, secretary, children governors and parents had all done their best to improve in any way possible, we were Ofsted Ready. The Inspector arrived and was greeted with an excellent 90% take up on parent-view and these wonderful results, together with brief chats with parents, informed him that parents were very happy with the school. He studied endless amounts of data, observed several lessons and even took a trip out with the children to Forest Schools which was excellent fun.

Then came the anxious wait for formal results, Whatfield being the first school in this pyramid to be judged on the new framework. We were graded as GOOD which is an excellent achievement as it was a grade up on the previous inspection. The staff, children, parents and governors were over the moon with such a wonderful result. Whatfield School can be really proud of all their achievements as well as the excellent Ofsted result. The Headteacher Mrs Golding said “we are pleased to say that Whatfield School has bucked the Suffolk trend, and are so pleased to have improved the grade under the new framework”. The big bad wolf, along with police officers, visited residents in Babergh last week to highlight the dangers of leaving outbuildings insecure. The two-day campaign took place on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 October. The total number of insecurities found in each parish were; seven in Brantham, two in Pinewood, nine in Nayland, 11 in Elmsett and one in Hadleigh. This gave a total of 30 insecurities discovered over the two days. When an ‘insecurity’ was found, the big bad wolf left a leaflet inside warning owners and offering crime reduction advice. Items such as power tools, lawnmowers, golf clubs, fishing equipment, canoes, BBQs, gas bottles, hand tools, ladders, scaffolding, a quad bike, scooters, bicycles, clothes, books, toys and paperwork were found within by officers. Babergh Crime Reduction Officer Verity Line said: “The wolf costume gave a very visual element to the campaign, with residents and passers-by asking what we were doing. “The campaign was very successful, with one resident in Nayland saying that he would definitely be registering on immobilise and Police Direct, and will be using the property marking pen on all his equipment. “Whilst it is good that people feel safe and secure in Suffolk, I would like to remind everyone of the need to lock your outbuildings securely to ensure you don’t become an easy target for opportunistic offenders. “I encourage anyone who is concerned about the security of their outbuilding to call 101 and ask to speak with their Crime Reduction Officer about a free home visit.” Residents who were at home on the day were given a ‘security pack’ which consisted of a home security book, Immobilise and Police Direct information, garden, garage and shed leaflets, a lights on timers postcard and a property marking pen.

Security advice given on the day was: - Fit a strong hasp and staple secured to the shed door and frame with coach bolts reinforced on the inside with washers. Do the same with the door hinges.

Use a good quality closed shackled padlock.

- Windows can be secured and obscured by fitting internal bars or grille and net curtains.

- Fit additional locks to up and over garage doors. Install a garage defender or similar on the outside to restrict the door from being prized open.

- A battery operated alarm can be used to deter intruders; alerts you to any break-in and makes it uncomfortable for the burglar to continue.

- Expensive items should be chained to a ground anchor or post securely fitted to the floor.

- Security mark all items of value with your postcode and house number, or name with a permanent marker, UV pen or with a property marking solution from companies such as Smartwater, SelectaDNA or Crimestoppers – hand tools, lawnmowers, power tools, sat navs, cameras, mobile phones, iPads and computers can all be marked in this way.

Birthday Barn Dance for Orchard Barn Following the resounding success of last year’s event we are again celebrating our birthday, our 6th, with a Barn Dance at Offton Village Hall. It will be held on Saturday 9th November from 7pm, with Stefan Freedman and his musicians leading dances to traditional music from around Europe. If you've been to our barn dances before, you're bound to know some of the dances; they are fun, family friendly and no partner is needed. We recently hosted the Heritage Lottery funded Skills for the Future interns from the Museum of East Anglian Life for a week and they constructed 2 fantastic shave horses for use at the museum – see photo. They also learned all about making and applying daub to our wattle roof. A great time was had by all!

We are continuing our Wednesday volunteer workdays, with occasional Saturdays as well. Women V Cancer ‘Cycle Cuba Challenge 2013’ - Group1 On Thursday October 3rd, seventy seven women, from all over the UK, left Gatwick Airport, bound for Cuba, to take part in the first of five ‘Cycle Cuba’ Challenges, having raised a minimum of £2,900 each, for Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, and Ovarian Cancer Action.

Over the course of five days, we cycled a total of 400 kms both on and off-road, in searing heat and 90% humidity.

Weather conditions were exceptional for the time of year, making it a tough challenge. Many suffered heat exhaustion and sickness on a daily basis. Frequent water stops, resting in the shade, were essential, as was the regular afternoon ritual of ‘the shower’, water poured over the head and neck, in order to cool the body down! There were one or two falls from the bikes, many bruised limbs, several passing outs, insect bites, a few tears, and unfortunately, one broken wrist. However, help and support was always close by, either by our new found friends or the amazing support team of two doctors, tour leaders, mechanics and drivers, plus back-up buses if needed.

The terrain in Cuba is varied and at times extremely hilly, rising in altitude to 1,295 ft at times. The variation in road surfaces, meant that often warning cries of ‘POTHOLE’, could be heard ahead!! We cycled through sleepy villages, seemingly caught in a time bubble, where the usual form of transport was a horse, or a horse drawn cart, acting as the local bus!

Children’s smiling faces and Spanish words of encouragement, helped us persevere, as we laboured up the long inclines. En route, we visited a boarding school for deaf children, where two youngsters entertained us with poetry and songs, and two teenage girls danced effortlessly, in time with the music which they were unable to hear. We thanked them with gifts of much needed items which are in short supply, such as toiletries, pencils, books and paper.

Our route in Cuba, took us from Matanzas in the north- west, along the Varedaro Peninsular, down to Cienfuegos and Trinidad on the southern coast, continuing on to Sancti Spiritus, crossing the finishing line in Santa Clara, where we received our medals. Next day, we returned to Havana by bus for a guided tour of the old city, before our final night’s Gala Dinner and a well earned half day’s rest before our overnight flight home.

An astounding total of approximately £300.000 was jointly raised by our group, to support and raise awareness to these three killer cancers of women. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of friends, acquaintances, the support of local businesses and our families, for which we thank you all most sincerely. We now hope to maintain both new friendships and fundraising for this very worthy cause.

We thought you might like to read about one of our fostering families and the fostering journey they have embarked upon. This month details the female carer’s thoughts and experience of becoming a foster carer. “Deciding to become a foster carer was a decision that we thought long and hard about as we knew that it would have a very large impact on our life, but I’m so glad that we did. We took the brave decision and contacted Eastern Family Services and we haven’t looked back. Elle and Sarah came out first to our house and we had a good relaxed chat and they told us about the agency and answered any questions we had. We were then appointed an independent social worker who went at our pace to get all the paperwork started. It really makes you look deep inside yourself and take a good hard look at your life, which is a really good thing as you need to go into fostering for the right reasons; like helping someone who hasn’t been as fortunate as ourselves. Believe me it’s hard work, but once the foster child placed with us learnt to trust us and realise that we were sticking with them and believing in them and not sending them away they have come on in leaps and bounds and we have got back more than we have put in. Waking up and seeing their smiling face each day instead of the scared look they had at the beginning, like a rabbit stuck in the headlights, is a lovely thing. Being able to give them normality, new experiences that we take for granted and seeing their face light up because we have taken the time to open up our home and our hearts. At times I was so exhausted I could have sat and cried, but I have cried more tears of joy just by being able to be a part of this child’s life and to see their face light up with each new experience, be that tasting a new food, getting new clothes or visiting a new place. They absorb everything and love and thrive being respected and treated as an equal in our family.

If you’re thinking about fostering, give it a go, it won’t be for everyone but it is very rewarding and I don’t regret becoming a foster carer at all.”

With the light starting to fade in the evening sky as the air turns colder many ducks who having left the banks of the mill stream during the summer after the full on parenthood times have returned to again make home in the low level trees along the river bank.

A dart of electric midnight blue colour passing the mill gate on the river is a reminder of a summer watching the Kingfisher pluck fish from the water in those hazy days gone by.

The progress on the mill is running to plan with the fifteen new Corten steel paddles being fabricated off site ready to be placed on the waterwheel in the new year, the next major task is to connect the heavy steel concave shaped plate that we recovered from under the wheel to a new oak timber then secure under and around the wheel within very close proximity to keep as much water as possible within the buckets adding to the efficiency of the wheel, new oak beams have been crafted and the sluice gate guides will hopefully be in place before Christmas – in the new year we hope to be able to start making the new sluice gate from English oak, the same as we used for the plates and for the sluice guides.

Over the course of time the brick work in and around the mill has deteriorated, in some places quite considerably so during the warmer weather many repairs have been carried out to the brick work that forms The Race and The Weir. …Would you like to come along with the children to Santa’s Workshop this Christmas a unique experience at Kersey Mill during December, when the mill will be transformed? The children will first meet a story teller who asks for their help to keep a naughty Elf in order whilst Father Christmas is out. The children will meet Santa. I’m Emma Jay, the new Events Coordinator for Magdalen House and am pleased to say we have a wide range of up and coming events for our residents, staff and members of the public. The residents are really looking forward to going to the Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich to see the Dick Whittington Panto in November and a variety of entertainment we have organised. With recent changes staff are happy and looking forward to dressing up for a Halloween Party with the residents.

I have been able to obtain Reflexology sessions for the residents with Darrell Thompson who also organises massaging sessions in a calm environment with soft music, which our residents love. Reflexology has been a success with residents and staff, so Darrell has agreed to hold regular sessions. I am also delighted that Fiona Nichols, a well known clairvoyant in the Suffolk area is holding an evening session on the 27th November for those wishing to hear from the ‘other side’.

As the weather is changing and getting colder we are holding Coffee Mornings with homemade cakes and biscuits every Wednesday between 10 and 12 noon and are inviting the public to enjoy the warm and welcoming experience in Magdalen House. Small donations will be welcome from the events Magdalen House are putting on as we are raising funds for a Manga Cushion, which is an aid in assisting residents to stand from a sitting position.

We are delighted to announce we have named our newly refurbished Dementia Suite to the Perry Rose Suite in honour of Mrs Rose Wright and Miss Joyce Perry who are both close to our hearts. I would like to give a special thank you to Margaret Park and those involved including residents and families in dedicating their time in making this area special for the residents living here.

Equally, our pupils have been supporting visitors at our recent Open Evening. We were pleased to have more visiting families than anticipated. Families were very impressed by our pupils and their enthusiasm for learning and it was a real asset to have so many of our pupils confidently guiding families around the school ensuring Year 5 and 6 pupils did not miss out on the range of learning activities available. Our Year 7 pupils have already shown an impressive range of knowledge and expertise about the school and also contributed to the questions posed by visitors.

Duke of Edinburgh October expedition beckons The D of E award is an award given for completing a programme of activities that can be undertaken for people aged between 14 and 24. For our budding Year 10s this is their first practice expedition after taking part in their first training expedition. They will be trekking through the Sizewell area with their maps, walking about 25 kilometres each day without adult guidance. This second practice expedition is a lead up to the qualifying expedition. Ms Wing, a recent winner of the Stowmarket triathlon said: “quite exciting for the new groups to have their qualifying expedition. Equipment is all ready and route and map is under way.” The Year 10s have been working hard creating the route plans for their expedition and we all wish them luck.

New Settlements As Half-Term nears, the year 7s have settled in to Hadleigh High really well. They are so far enjoying school and are fast making new friends. “It’s fun. I like all of my lessons and I have made lots of new friends.” Lucy 7G. “It’s a lot better than primary school. My favourite lesson is Science or Maths. I have also made new friends.”

Jamie 7G. “You get to do different things from primary. My favourite lessons are PE, Science and Maths and I have made lots of new friends.” Olivia 7A. “It’s good but I don’t like the amount of homework! I like the 100 minute lessons and my favourite subject is PE. I have made a few new friends.” Luca 7A. “It’s been quite good so far. I like PE as I enjoy rugby. I have made a few new friends.” Sam 7M Pupils jump for joy for the Maasai Warriors The Osiligi Maasai Warrior Troupe visited Hadleigh High during October. The warriors shared information about Maasai culture as well as performing a range of songs and dances using only their voices to create the rhythm and music. They live out in Kenya and graze their cattle in the area of the Ngong Hills. The Troupe members are: Tajeu Ole Minisa (know as Richard) he is the leader of the troupe , Kamayet Ole Parmari (known as Sarge) he joined the group as a soloist, Keesame Ole Parsapaet (know as Movie Star) is a great hunter of wild cats, Miriam Tentere Mulunkei (know as Miriam) she hopes that the funds from working with the group will allow her to build a bigger house, Lidya Simaloi is 25 and hopes that she will extend her family finances, Simon Salau Kuraru has taught himself English and has developed a skill as a narrator and Rempesa Ole Kirkoya joined the group because of his excellent warrior skills and a talented soloist. The money raised by the Osiligi Charity Project sponsors children to get an education, provide clean water and build a school.

Poetry in Motion On Thursday 21st November we are pleased to welcome performance poet ‘Adisa the Verbaliser’ to the school to present his poetry to Years 7 & 8. Adisa will be performing poetry from his fantastic book ‘Lip Hopping with the FundiFu.’ Adisa is well known on the performance poetry circuit and in 2003 won the title of New Performance Poet of the Year. Adisa frequently visits schools throughout Europe to share and deliver his phenomenal performances which have been described as ‘a giant pizza with toppings of African wisdom and observational comedy!’ This is a unique opportunity for our pupils to have an enjoyable new experience of poetry performances that are brought to life in an exciting way. The visit will also be supporting the promotion of literacy and reading for pleasure. We hope this will develop our pupils’ knowledge of poetry and will be an enjoyable experience for all involved.

Aha me hearties! Year 6s thoroughly enjoyed their day at Hadleigh High School when they partook in a Pirate themed Science day. The purpose was to maintain our links to the local primary schools, enabling them to come up to high school in with prior September knowledge to experiments we do throughout their time with us. The school decided to go all out this year with Science teachers and Year 6 pupils dressing up as pirates to celebrate the day. The Year 6s were split up into teams with different pirate ship names.

Their mission was to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow from a deserted island and as they completed tasks they gradually grew closer to saving him. Mr Horn, a science teacher, said, “I loved it. I really like working with primary school children, they are very eager to get involved and learn.” We hope that everyone who took part enjoyed it as much as we did.

Singing at Suffolk One A group of Year 8s and 9s were offered the chance to go to Suffolk One for the day to work with 2 professional singers.

They worked on operatic and musical songs, some of which included songs from ‘Les Miserables’. Throughout the day they worked on the songs to then perform them to Suffolk One students. Around 15 students from the high school partook in this event along with others from other schools. Jess Simmons, who participated in the workshop, said, “It was interesting; we learnt a lot.” We would like to thank Suffolk One for having us and we hope that the students who took part in the workshop will carry on with their singing success.

Open Evening goes off with a bang On Thursday 10th October Hadleigh High School opened its doors to Year 6 pupils. There were lots of opportunities available for the Year 6’s to engage in while they had tours around the school led by our existing pupils. Mr Crane, an organiser of the evening, said, “I thought it was a great success. I thought the pupils in particular were fantastic this year at promoting the school. I managed to spend half an hour as a parent and was very impressed by the variety of activities that my son could partake in.” Some of the activities involved included: trampolining, cake decorating, making slime, pottery, making shanty town houses and creating electric shocks. Miss Gibson also thought the evening was a huge success. She said, “It was lovely to see so many families engaging in the wide range of opportunities available. Feedback from our visitors about our students was hugely positive. People said how impressed they were in how polite and confident pupils came across. It was lovely to see so many volunteers from every year group promoting our school.” Overall the evening was a huge success and we hope to see many familiar faces in September.

We shoot we score! At the recent Year 11 netball tournament on the 15th October we had many triumphant wins for Hadleigh High. A jubilant Miss Brown commented, “We beat East Bergholt, Ipswich Academy, Northgate, Coppleston and Ormiston Endeavour Academy, resulting in a fantastic win, making Hadleigh High proud of its victorious students. It was stunning to watch”. We also have upcoming netball tournaments for our Year 7 and 8 students; we all hope they will be as successful as our Year 11s.

Year 10s get to work Year 10 students at Hadleigh High have become accustomed to their GCSE subjects. A student said, “It’s a lot more rewarding when you know all your hard work is going to use.” Year 10 students are well absorbed into their GCSE courses and getting on with the hard work tremendously! Year 10 student, Amiee Davies from 10T commented, “The stress has built up after starting our GCSE courses but I am definitely enjoying everything there is to offer and looking forward to the outcomes afterwards!” Lois Peck from 10M also said, “I think getting to choose our own subjects is good because you get to choose the ones that you think will help you in the future and you try harder in the lessons you prefer and that will help you later on.” The teachers are very supportive of Year 10s, Mr Miller, the Head of Options told us: “Year 10s have settled in better than previous years. I have had many fewer pupils asking me to change certain subjects. Year 9s should start thinking about what they want to do, and balance it with what they enjoy and what they are good at.” We wish the Year 10s further luck in their courses and exams that will follow shortly.

Expectations evening Expectations Evenings opened to Year 7 and Year 10 pupils. Mr Green talked about what is happening: “The evening involved trying to get the children to aim high and the parents to support them in doing so. They should also do the best they can. It should find the children’s academic potential.” The evenings should be a good experience for the pupils and teachers alike.

Dodgeball Tournament This year pupils are taking part in a inter-house dodgeball tournament that will add up the points to win the house cup. The Year 10 competition is under way with the other years looking forward to competing against each other. Mr Lloyd said, “I was pleased with my form’s performance in dodge ball. I credit our victory to my form’s participation and I am very proud of my form.” There will be many sports and other activities, such as netball and rounders, which will contribute to the points that will go towards winning the house cup which is awarded at the end of the year.

FAN - Fidelis Activity News Richard Wright’s transition from pigs to packaging via oil lamps was a fascinating tale of resourcefulness, determination and self belief. Richard re-traced his unusual career path from his pig farming days as a very young boy to his current innovative business producing eco/bio friendly packaging.

Interestingly, the gradual demise of one source of income lead to the creation of his next venture. The dire consequences of animal diseases such as swine fever were the catalyst for his unusual, attractive flower filled oil lamps project. Unreasonable demands from the Health and Safety department put paid to that successful idea and lead to his present interest in unique packaging.

With every project there were highs and lows, Richard Wright with his humour and frustration and Richard shared innovative packaging these experiences with his captivated audience.

After his talks there were lots of questions and interest in the lamps and contents of the home produced packaging which were on display.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our October meeting was held a week early and was a trip to Hyde Hall in Essex. The intrepid eight assembled in the swimming pool car park ready for the off - disaster the dear old A12 was still blocked by the accident that happened at 1am. We decided to take the northern route via Sudbury, of course everything was horribly jammed up. Two hours later we arrived (it should have been a 45 minute journey via A12) - after a short introductory talk we were let in to wander and marvel and what can be achieved by an army of proficient gardeners. Despite the bad start it was an enjoyable day - the sun shone and the gardens were magnificent, the vegetable garden was particularly colourful with gourds and squashes in abundance, It was a pity so few a the membership were able to join the outing.

Our next meeting on 11th November at 7.30pm in the Town Hall is Phillip Bland talking about "All Types of Fruit Growing". The competition is "A vase of Autumn Flowers". Visitors always welcome.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts The last week has been dominated by the results of a gale on the eleventh of October. In the old hedge that divides my rear garden in half there is an Ash tree. This tree had been cut back when it was young with the result that it had 3 large trunks. The Northerly gale split one of these trunks away from the other 2 and brought a massive piece of tree down partly into my garden, and partly onto the Hornbeam & beech hedge that divides my garden from my neighbour.

Happily damage was not serious. I have a couple of friends who with hand saw, and chain saw managed to extract the trunk from the hedge, and cut it up. The large stuff went to someone who has a log burner, with some choice bits going to a member of "The Chestnuts Woodturning Club" which meets in the URC committee room. An attempt to count the tree rings says that the tree was well over 100 years old. The small stuff had to be cut up and carted to the Council Recycling Centre. With the Ash disease spreading it was sad to be cutting up what appeared to be a healthy piece of tree. I shall now have to watch the two remaining trunks.

There was one sad piece of damage. The falling tree hit one of my dwarf apple trees and broke it off at ground level. The variety called "Deacon's Millennium" was introduced by Deacons, the fruit tree grower on the Isle of Wight to mark the Millennium. It is an early eater, just a little bit later than Discovery, with a flavour that I love. I shall probably replace it even though it will be 3 years before I start to get apples from a replacement.Now is a very good time to be planting apple trees.

In the last few days I have become more interested in slugs. Apparently we are being invaded by the "Spanish Slug", and are invited to report sightings to <www.slugwatch.co.uk>. The Spanish slug is a big brute which reproduces rapidly. I have tended to think that a slug is just a slug, although I do distinguish between those that feed underground on my potatoes, and those that eat young lettuces in my greenhouse. Actually there are 29 different native slugs in the United Kingdom before the arrival of the Spanish invader.

Weather Records In September at Kersey there were 37.9 mm (1.5") of rain, which is about 60% of our average rainfall. The 3 month figure increased slightly to 112 mm (3.7") which is about 75 % of the average.

In September the maximum temperature was 29 Cel (84F), which is several degrees warmer than average. The minimum temperature for September was 6 Cel (43F) which is quite normal. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 12 Cel (54F) , which is 2 degrees warmer than average for mid October.

Hints November is a good month to have a tidy up. Clear the dead plants out of those containers and baskets. Clean them up and put them away until next year. Clear leaves off of paths before people slip on them. If you only use a greenhouse for tomatoes clean it up and leave it tidy ready for the Spring. If you use your greenhouse throughout the year, the shading will need to be cleaned off, and the glass cleaned to give the best possible light to plants during Winter. There is still time to plant shrubs and fruit trees/bushes. If you are planting be generous in the space that you give them. It is easy for them to become overcrowded as they mature.

Most of the 2014 seed catalogues are now available. Few of them now restrict themselves to seeds. They generally also offer "plug" plants, bulbs and perennials. As such the catalogues are a good read for the dark evenings.

Now is about the right time to make an autumn sowing of one of the hardy broad beans like Aquadulce if you want to try it. The beginning of the month is still OK for planting sets of the Japanese onions.

The last Sunday in September saw Hadleigh Tennis Club celebrate the end of the summer season with the traditional President`s tournament. The tournament is a fun event, but still with a competitive edge. Members of The club play tennis in a variety of match formats, including mixed doubles, ladies and men’s doubles and this year in a new format “champions” team tennis.

Throughout the morning event, individual players accumulate points towards the result of the tournament. As always, the tournament was well support by members of the club and their guests, with 18 competitors striving to win the “President`s Cup” and other prizes.

The eventual winner, by only 1 point, was Trevor Rowland, who received the “Ken Goddard memorial cup”, from Peter Richards, Hadleigh Tennis Club’s president. Other prizes were won by Angela Forrest and Dominica Yannaghas.

The competition was followed by a convivial buffet lunch where members and guests discussed the points that” just got away”. This year the members were pleased to raise a glass to celebrate Andy Murray’s fine performance in becoming the first British man in 77 years to win The All England Lawn Tennis Club’s (Wimbledon) Gentlemen`s singles title. WPGA International Challenge at Stoke

by Nayland enjoys a thrilling finish Hannah Ralph produced the golf strokes of a master in Constable Country to win the WPGA International Challenge at Stoke by Nayland at the end of September. In what proved a dramatic climax to the third and final round that had seen the lead change hands with bewildering regularity, Ralph posted birdies on the final two holes to claim the £4,000 winner’s cheque. Amy Boulden failed to capitalise on her birdie chance and finished three strokes adrift of Ralph and sharing second place with Galina Rotmistrova of Russia.

A selection of Great Britain and Ireland’s top female PGA pros competed against rising stars of the future in the inaugural WPGA International Challenge at the family-owned Stoke by Nayland resort. The 54-hole tournament, which was sponsored by the host venue, was the only Ladies European Tour Access Series event scheduled in the United Kingdom.

The family owners at Stoke by Nayland were excited about gracing the international golf stage once more as the only UK destination on the 2013 LETAS schedule.

Among the golfers looking for a share of the £25,000 prize fund was former Solheim Cup winning captain and US Women’s Open champion Alison Nicholas. Now a fully qualified PGA Professional, Nicholas, who was awarded an MBE in 1997 for her services to golf, will serve as a reminder of the rewards that can follow success at this level of the sport.

Simon Higginbottom, The PGA’s head of tournaments, said: “Alison Nicholas has been at the forefront of women’s golf in the UK and across the world for two decades and to have a player of her Alison Nicholas MBE tees off calibre competing at Stoke by Nayland one of the holes at the WPGA will no doubt inspire.”

International Challenge Local rising amateur, and member of Stoke by Nayland since her early teens, Hannah Moul also received a guest pass to play in the event. Although she didn’t make the cut, Hannah benefitted from the experience gained from playing in this high profile WPGA and LETAS championship in such esteemed company.

In addition to England, Scotland and Wales, 19 countries have representatives in the tournament which is the only Ladies European Tour Access (LETAS) event scheduled in the United Kingdom.

Preceding the 3 day event was a Pro Am, with the top 25 lady professionals from the main event, and amateur players included BBC Look East’s Stewart White and Tom Williams.

Septic Tank Emptying Drain Clearance

A Hippy Ending to the Outdoor Bowling Season The HCN October item from the Bowling Club included a photograph of our members at the closing day fancy dress drive provided by Peter Cutts and our thanks to him for that. As could be seen from the photograph there were more Hippies than Rockers but member’s efforts added to the fun for the closing drive of Ladies v Men. The ranks of the ladies were bolstered by a couple of cross dressers who enthusiastically accepted the role. The drive ended in an honourable draw of 3 wins each. The afternoon was concluded with an excellent BBQ provided by Margaret Clarke and her band of helpers all of whom did a great job which was very much appreciated.

The celebrations continued into the evening with dancing to live music provided by “Buzz” very much continuing the theme of the day with some good old fashioned Rock n Roll. Jan Austin won the best female fancy dress and Peter Vanstone won best male. However many members had put a lot of effort into their outfits and it all added to a memorable closing day.

New Man at top for Newton Green Peter Philpott is the new acting chairman of Newton Green Golf Club, where he has been a members since the club moved to 18 holes 20 years ago. A retired national sales director of a major tyre manufacturer, he plays off a handicap of 13, and succeeds Paddy Lockwood, who retired at the club's annual meeting earlier this year. Mr Philpot has been appointed acting chairman until the March annual meeting, and commented: "I am delighted to be taking this position at such a successful period in the club's history.

Hopefully, we can build on this year's success and have an even more successful 2014. "The course has been in excellent order all year, and with continuing improvements already planned for the winter months, Newton Green should be a pleasure, and challenge, for all levels of golfer."

Small town club, Hadleigh RFC, entered four youth teams into the Touchline Suffolk Rugby 7s at the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook. Against the odds, Hadleigh came away with the Trophy in the U13s, the Plate in the U15s, and the Shield at U16, whilst the U14 narrowly lost in the Trophy Semi-Finals.

It was a great achievement for the Club, which is one of the youngest and smallest in the County, beating off many sides from much larger and more established rugby clubs. It was the first time in the Club's brief history that a Hadleigh Youth team has won a major trophy, and was a successful day for all of their Youth teams.

In the U13s there were some excellent performances notably from Dan Squirrell, Harvey Clements and Oscar Farrow (all three from Hadleigh High School), and some superb finishing from Toyo Ogunlesi and captaincy by Toby Braybrooke ( both of the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook). Hadleigh U13s were worthy champions, scoring 219 points for and only 26 against, over the six match unbeaten run.

The U14s won three of their four pool games to qualify for the semi-final of the Trophy, where they were unfortunately beaten by Southwold. Eight of the sixteen boys in the squad managed to get on the score sheet during the day with Jake Hudson and James Hindmarsh scoring 5 tries each and Robert Bray scoring 4.

The U15s won three matches on their way to the Plate Final, with Captain, Arthur Romer-Lee, scoring a plethora of tries before unfortunately sustaining an injury. New-comer, Sam Cantelo, gained a hat trick in the run up to the final and other squad members worked hard to overcome some tough opposition.

In the final against Ipswich, Sam Hindley scored a terrific first-half hat trick of tries to put Hadleigh in charge resulting in the U15s lifting the Plate 38-12.

The most senior youth side at the Club, the U16s, not known for their quick starts at tournaments, surprised all by securing victories against Ipswich YM and Stowmarket, scoring 70 points in the process. They were defeated by Colchester A team and Ipswich, but maintained their composure to take home the Shield after outplaying Ipswich YM B team in the semis and Brightlingsea in the Final.

Chairman of Hadleigh RFC, Charlie Warburton, congratulated the performance of all the youth players involved, “I have been blown away by the determination and outstanding play by these young players. It is a historical milestone for Hadleigh RFC as this is the first time a Youth Team has won a major trophy up against the larger and well established clubs”.
