900 mile End-to-End Bike Ride A few years ago Jimmy Wilding and Dick Beechener took part in the London Marathon. Having recovered from that they are now planning to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats in June for cancer research. No mean feat, as Jimmy will be 70 and Dick 64 years of age by the time they leap (or maybe clamber) onto their cycles. The pair have been friends for 45 years, during which time Jimmy was Best Man at Dick and Linda’s wedding, and Dick and Linda were godparents to Jimmy and Margaret’s daughter, Kate. Linda and Margaret both worked for a time as dental nurses when Arthur Lee had a practice in Queen Street. Jimmy and Dick both have a strong motivation to support the Cancer Research charity as Margaret was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and thankfully responded to treatment, but sadly, Linda died in September 2006 from ovarian cancer. Jimmy and Dick are therefore trying to raise as much as possible for the charity which funds research into treatment for all forms of the disease. They face quite a challenge, but despite the hard work involving months of training, leading up to cycling 900 miles (and there are a lot of hills between Cornwall and the Scottish mainland’s most northerly point), both
feel it will be fun – and a more than worthwhile fund-raising achievement. There is much to organise yet - the route, a back-up vehicle (in case of breakdown), accommodation, sustenance, fund-raising arrangements and so forth. The immediate need is for a volunteer to coordinate fund-raising; anyone who feels competent to take this on, please speak to Dick or Jimmy as soon as possible. Both will be very grateful for all the help they can get during the preparation and training period – starting now!
