New Hadleigh to Ipswich Bus - Join the queue!

It was an exciting start to the inaugural evening bus service from Magdalen Road, Hadleigh to Ipswich on the 20th August with many people in attendance to see the bus depart. Hadleigh teenager Isabel Wills said “The restored bus service will be very useful to the young adults of the town.”

Nearly 4,000 members of the community signed a petition, which was presented to Suffolk Country Council and triggered a debate, which resulted in the decision to reinstate our bus. Councillor Guy McGregor, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for roads and transport said; “Suffolk County Council recognised the need for there to be evening public bus services in the Ipswich to Hadleigh corridor which is why I am pleased that we have been able to secure sufficient funding to make this happen.

“The new service will be particularly useful for students attending college and university in Ipswich, but it is open to all. I do hope that there will be a good uptake of this service, which the county council will support for six months.

Before the end of the six month period, which begins next month, I will be holding a meeting to review the service.”

The successful bus story has been the culmination of much hard work and persistence by Hadleigh residents Simon Wills and Shelley Pingo and Hadleigh Conservative Babergh Councillors, Brian Riley and Kathryn Grandon.

Simon Wills commented: “I really hope that enough people use the service for it to remain viable as I believe it is no more than a basic amenity. I much appreciate the positive support that’s been given to the petition from all quarters and SCC’s positive response” Shelley Pingo said: “A new lifeline. We pulled it off! Let’s not waste the six month trial.”

The bus service is being operated by Hadleigh Community Transport Group.

Its Chairman, Bob Beaumont, says: “Hadleigh Community Transport Group, a local community enterprise, have been working hard behind the scenes and are pleased to provide this service of benefit to the local community.”

Brian Riley took the bus to Ipswich on its first journey and commented: “It’s rarely given to us to be part of something so dramatic and so worthwhile as the restoration of the bus service and the community support it provides. I’m grateful to my colleagues who did the hard work of collecting signatures and raising this issue’s profile and for all the encouragement we received to press ahead with our cause. Long live the bus service!”

“It is very exciting that community effort has helped Suffolk Country Council to recognise how important it is for a town the size of Hadleigh to have this vital link to Ipswich, where many of our education, work and entertainment facilities are located,” says Kathryn Grandon. “Fares are the same as the day service and you can use the day return ticket. The service will be reviewed, so carry on using the service.”

Hadleigh Duplicate Bridge The last season was an eventful one for the Club. Having become very overcrowded in our venue at the Seminar Room of the Library we made the decision to move to the much more spacious and more comfortable premises at Hadleigh Football Club. We settled in well and have enjoyed some good evenings of bridge and rounded up the season with a teams evening to add some variety.

Unfortunately shortly after moving to our new larger premises Murphy’s law swung into action. We sadly lost three members, John Porter, Mary Howell and Eileen Huntsman, who passed away within a month or so of each other.

They were all enthusiastic players who supported the club regularly and they will be greatly missed. Illness and hospital stays have also played a part in keeping our numbers down recently so we are now actively looking to recruit new members. To parody Lord Kitchener “The Club needs You! The Club, which meets on Monday evenings for duplicate bridge is a very friendly one and you would be made very welcome. If you do not have a partner we will do our best to try and find you one. If it is some time since you have played and you feel a bit stale or if you are fairly new to the game and would like some coaching then we have a very able coach who would be glad to help.

Start your model railway journey here Model trains have always kept my memories of days of steam train rides alive in my mind, and a few years ago I began to make myself a model railway layout in a spare room in my house. My interest in train modelling recently came to fruition when my layout was featured as an article in the ‘Railway Modeller’ magazine for August 2012. I would like to share my enthusiasm with other people who are likeminded and be interested in starting up a group to share interests and share skills from each other, or perhaps you would just like to look first at one or two such layouts here in Hadleigh for free and without obligation.You may like to bring one or two youngsters to see my layout and/or you may like to see my model yourself. GRO Landscapes win Silver Gilt 2012 For the second year running Hadleigh based GRO Landscapes has been awarded a Silver Gilt Certificate for its entry at the prestigious Sandringham Flower Show. Thousands of visitors flocked to the one day show on the Royal Estate, and was able to inspect the entries in both the small and large gardens sections. This year’s entry by GRO Landscapes was titled “Cube” and was an example of a small courtyard garden space in which to relax and unwind, and which requires minimum maintenance. The main structure was a timber open-sided cube, with a paved floor of sandstone and retro blocks. At the back of the cube was a clear Perspex panel holding back a wall of pebbles, which was complimented by a similar water feature to the front of the garden. Woven fence panels provided elegant screening with soft planting of mixed herbaceous perennials and other plants.

The Cube was designed by GRO Landscapes owner Guy Ormes and was praised by judges Alan Mason and Chris Beardshaw for its innovation and attention to detail. The small garden took four days to build, and Guy Ormes said he was delighted with the award which reflected the effort put in by all involved including his wife Vicky and Jack Warner.

Howard at Norfolk Broads My dear readers this month news reached me of a new coffee shop at Kersey Mill. Kimberley Morton has opened “Little Treats Bakery”. I paid a visit and thoroughly enjoyed myself. A whole range of coffees was available. I gazed over the counter at Kimberley’s scones and indeed they were worthy of a second glance. They would certainly give my house keeper Maria’s a run for their money. I drooled at the thought that they would soon be a reality on my plate; they were lovely, warm and moist and served with butter, jam and whipped double cream. There were all sorts of other cakes and goodies and one could also have a light lunch.

Several friends and clients from Hadleigh were enjoying a coffee and all in all it was a convivial experience. Why not pop into Kersey Mill and treat yourself. Now, as you know, I have just clipped 50 although I can get away with saying that I am 39! I expect that like me you get the odd ache and pain. Well, a friend of mine has suggested that I should be taking a table spoon of Cider vinegar every day and presented me with a bottle as a gift.

It is rather sour but I will let you know if I find myself more supple than I was.

It is a year ago since I was photographed with an avenue of portaloos from Capel Plant. If you need plant, power tools, compressors, cement mixers, wacker plates, gas cylinders and of course portaloos and such like then give Chris Dovey a call at Capel Plant (Tel. 01206 844004). I am sure that you will find their pricing competitive and an excellent service. I laid some hard core and even had my mother walking behind a wacker plate but you will have to push your own!

We have enjoyed one or two lovely days and I have taken the opportunity to motor up to the Norfolk Broads with my mother. The picture shows me at Strumpshaw which is a lovely spot and off the beaten track. One has to cross the Wherry Line and in the middle of nowhere is a 24 hour manned level crossing! You may also care to try the Beauchamp Arms at Buckenham NR14 6DH for a pleasant lunch and to watch the boats sail by.

As the children go back to school and holidays come to an end some of you will be considering whether to move house. If that is so, please do come and have a word with us. Betjeman and Kipling - again!

Back in June David and Wendy Atkins presented an evening for the Friends of St Mary’s on the lives and works of, arguably, the two most populist poets and storey tellers of the 20th century. The evening was very well received and a number of people were sorry to miss it because of holidays or other commitments. SO – we are repeating the exercise on Saturday 22nd September in the Community Room of the URC at 7.30pm with proceeds going to the Ansell Centre restoration fund.

As those present in June this is no ordinary poetry reading evening for it includes slide shows, JB reading his own works and audience participation. If you have a favourite piece by either of these authors (better still if you would like to read it!) please let us know (822535) by 15th September. This may well turn it into a very different programme – so those who came in June are very welcome to come again.

Hadleigh Healing Society The year has that “golden” feel about it what with the ‘Golden Jubilee’ and the gold medals won at the Olympics. It has made us all feel that as a nation we can show the world that we can still put on a show despite the doom and gloom in the financial markets. We have shown the world and our critics that we are a hospitable nation who welcome people to our country. Yes, we have eccentricities but so do many countries. Let us try and keep that ‘golden’ feel and keep afresh those memories of the sights, scenes and stories that we have experienced during this time. Memories can be happy and sad but they sometimes influence our lives to the detriment of others. Try not to focus on the bad memories, let them go because they can harm you and others.

Hadleigh – Local Supplier Week The East of England Co-operative Society will be hosting a week of tastings by local suppliers in their Hadleigh Supermarket, beginning Monday 10 September through to Saturday 15 September.

There will be the opportunity to try fruit juices, baked goods, teas, curry sauces, chocolate, sausages and Adnams ale. From 2pm on Thursday there will also be the chance to not only taste Suffolk Honey but to meet some of the honey bees who produce it, in the store.

The Station on the Hill When talking to a mutual friend whilst caravanning at Ickworth Park last weekend it was mentioned that he came from Hadleigh and in the conversation I happened to mention that I was supposed to have had a relative who took the last passenger ticket before the railway closed down.

They then mentioned to me that there was a item in the ‘Hadleigh Community News’ called ‘The Station on the Hill’ written by Jeff Ward, which they then lent to me to read and there, to my Sydney Walter Westwood surprise, was my grandfathers brothers Hadleigh Stationmaster name - ‘1918 to 1921 Sydney Walter 1918 - 1921 Westwood’ - Stationmaster. I have been to Hadleigh many times, as I am only in Ipswich, but have always failed to find any names in my family tree mentioned on the railway, I did read the story of Hadleigh Railway, but again no names were mentioned. So ‘Thank you Hadleigh Community News’!

I did wonder if there was any other Westwood’s in Hadleigh connected to Sydney Westwood? Incidentally my Grandfather William worked at Ipswich Station and his other brother Albert Westwood worked at Felixstowe station and was reported to have signalled one Albert and William Westwood of the first trains in.

Greener Hadleigh We have in the past talked about eating local food, which has benefits for the local economy and environment by reducing transport costs and pollution.

Despite the strange weather this year, September is a good time to try 'eating local', and many Suffolk groups are promoting a '30 day, 30 mile challenge'.

If you have access to the internet the Ipswich group have a website covering much of the information and maps needed; http://30milefood.transitionipswich.org.uk/ If you do not have Internet access, or would like to shop in the immediate area, Hadleigh is very lucky to have a vibrant High Street. The butchers have locally reared meat, the farm shop stocks locally grown, seasonal fruit and vegetables, as well as local dairy produce, eggs and honey. The supermarket in our High Street has a section dedicated to locally sourced produce and other items are clearly marked. We also have a delicatessen and health food store for other local produce, and only a few miles away a well-stocked farm shop. So please give this challenge a try - we will be handing out stickers and some additional information during the month.

Historically August can be a troublesome month.

Wars break out and financial crises break upon us.

Sometimes we are completely surprised and at other times it's like being in a slow motion car crash where if you're lucky you can brace yourself against the inevitable. I bring no such bad news. August this year appears to have been a month of consultation.

Babergh is asking what is expected of it and in other areas Babergh is asking what the towns and parishes can do for themselves.

Over the last couple of years Hadleigh residents will have been only too clearly aware of the battles fought to keep short-term car parking free of charge.

Having been defeated in its attempts to charge for short-term car parking Babergh has now embraced the idea that perhaps the towns could manage their own parking. Sudbury Town Council are actively looking at this in partnership with their chamber of commerce. One current proposal under discussion would see Sudbury managing the car parks for themselves as well as Hadleigh and Lavenham. Hadleigh Town Council's response to this has been less than proactive. If I was in charge of looking after my town’s interests I would be knocking on Babergh’s doors and asking how I could take over my own car parking arrangements. Perhaps more interesting is the question how would Hadleigh be better off having its car parking managed from Sudbury than from Corks Lane.

Babergh’s endeavours to offload the car parking are motivated by money. We anticipate that as a result of reductions in funding from central government our budget may be decreased by a third over three years. This will require very imaginative solutions if we are not to lose essential services. Car parking in Babergh this year is budgeted to cost £170,000 including overheads and capital costs. It is a golden rule that if you cannot solve a problem then you must make it go away by handing it on to someone else. Our towns and villages have the talents – let them be used.

BIOMASS • • • • • • Local Hadleigh Charities were the fortunate recipients of money raised during Councillor Penny Cook’s year as Mayor in Hadleigh which ended in May. Penny said ‘when I became Mayor I decided that I would like to support charities which were very local to Hadleigh and I knew, from my teaching time at Hadleigh High School, of three such charities in memory of pupils at the school.’

The three charities who each received £500 are the: Alison Fracella Research Trust Brendan Oakes Trust Steven Henly Award for Outstanding Commitment At the presentation on Monday, 13th August, in the Guildhall Garden Penny thanked all those who had been involved with the fund raising events and spoke of her admiration for Robert and Sue Kettlewell, Mark and Val Oakes, Bob and Zahra Henly and who have been able to overcome personal tragedy to fund raise for such worthwhile causes.

Home-Start Babergh celebrates London 2012 Home-Start Babergh took the opportunity to use its’ summer get together for families to celebrate the opening of the London 2012 Olympics. On Friday 27th July Home-Start Babergh held an Opening Ceremony Party at The Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard, where the topic was: The World is Coming to London! The party was paid for by a grant from Suffolk Celebrates the Olympics and Paralympics awarded by Suffolk County Council.

On arrival families picked up their Olympic passport which allowed them to visit the five continents where they were able to take part in craft activities e.g., boomerang making for Australasia, animal face masks for Africa, Russian dolls for Europe and children were also able to have their faces painted with a country’s flag. On completion of each activity they received a sticker for their passport, a full passport was rewarded with a 2012 gift.

There was also opportunities for the children to take part in some sports; javelin, hurdles, discus, football and archery, where prizes were awarded for the top scores and throws. Live Well Suffolk came along with a static bicycle for all to have a try at being the next Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy or Victoria Pendleton! Live Well were also able to advice on health and wellbeing.

After all that exercise there was a sample of foods from around the world; homemade bread from Ethiopia, Pizzas from Italy, Anzac biscuits from Australia, Poppodums and Samosas from India and Bananas from Asia. It truly was a worldwide feast. The children were also given cards with various Olympians and Paralympians to keep an eye out for over the next few weeks.

Sarah Mann, Scheme Leader said “It was an opportunity for families to get involved in the Olympics, something which many of them would otherwise not be able to do and to encourage the children to have a go at some of the sports.” “We are also hoping that they will follow their Olympians and Paralympians to see how well they do.” It has been another busy year for Home-Start Babergh, who during 2011/12 supported 99 families and over 250 children.

Readers have kindly loaned a variety of items that have started four investigations into life in the past, which feature in Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 4. Jane Fletcher found a trade token in her garden that has been identified as one belonging to a 17th century Bildeston shopkeeper. Research reveals why such ‘small change’ had to be produced and which other traders in the village also resorted to solving a national problem in this way. ‘Hidden Histories’ looks at a bundle of title deeds for a house in Market Place, which was formerly the home of two generations of doctors and of six rectors, as well as revealing the recipe for “Rectory Ale” but please beware of the brew’s potency. In 1885, a public information poster first saw the light of day in Bildeston not nailed on the church door, as it should have been, but on display in the post office housed in what is now Bank House Stores. And finally, after seeing the front cover of Issue 2, which showed the unveiling of the War Memorial in 1920, Pat Whymark of Hitcham loaned treasured family papers concerning her grandfather, one of the men of Bildeston so remembered, whose story is now told. Other articles cover the Baptist Church, the Bourchier family and a Member of Parliament who closed some Bildeston footpaths.

Starting in The Hall, the Major drew attention to a large circular ‘millennium’ table which he designed and had crafted from the estate’s oak trees. It incorporates an acorn-shaped time capsule full of appropriate items to amuse and puzzle future Cobbold generations. He continued the stories and anecdotes about pictures and memorabilia in every room giving the group a better understanding of his interesting family background and the house’s history. Up keep of the property is an ongoing nightmare prompting the family to open the house and its extensive grounds to the public for functions and events. The tour ended in the conservatory where the Major served tea and cakes and several attendees explored the beautiful gardens.

The Friends of St. Mary’s Church Annual Meeting 2012, Saturday 27th October at 7.30pm St. Mary’s Church - An ever evolving building This illustrated presentation will show that changes in appearances to both the exterior and interior of St. Mary’s Church, have been taking place from soon after the original church was built during the 1200s. What were some of these changes and how were funds raised? Using architectural details and documentary sources, this presentation by Roger Kennel and Millie Goulbourn will show an ever evolving church building in Hadleigh.

Warrant Officer Willie Banks (Bill) Banks, RAF Bomber Command A service of thanksgiving for the life of Bill Banks was held in St.Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on 2nd August 2012. The service was led by Hilary Griffin and well attended by friends, and colleagues from the Air Crew Association, RAF, Fleet Air Arm, the Mayor and members of the Town Council. The British Legion Standard was borne by Len Davies and trumpeter was Barry Nutt.

We are very grateful for all the donations received which helped towards the expenses of this service and all surplus funds are being divided between SAAFA and The RAF Benevolent Fund to thank them for the invaluable help, support and hours they devoted to Bill during the last years of his life.

Rotary Review OBITUARY: Members were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of ROY WATLING. Although struggling with health problems during the past few years he had seemed to be a little better of late and had been regularly attending meetings. Roy was a popular member for over 20 years and always took a full part in all activities. he had chaired Committees, served as Club President (1997/8) and as Club Treasurer for 2 terms only relinquishing this duty for the last time in June this year. He will be greatly missed by everyone. The sincere condolences of all members go to Shirley and the family.

CLUB ACTIVITIES: After a very close and enjoyable game the club bowls team lost 14 shots to 15 to Letchworth clubs in the district competition.

MEMBERSHIP: The Club has initiated a new and interesting way of becoming involved with and finding out more about your local club. Associate membership allows you attend meetings and become involved with club activities for a trial period without any long term commitment. Please read the seperate article in this issue.

SPEAKERS: 1 Ann Walker, Practice Manager of Siam Surgery, Sudbury spoke about her career in the NHS.She started 25 years ago at Leigh on Sea helping to develop a new surgery which became an example of ideal practice prompting visits from other doctors both home and overseas. However she liked Suffolk so much that she eventually moved to Long Melford before settling recently in Hadleigh. After commuting for 2 years she found a local position at Siam Surgery taking with her all that she had learned at Leigh on Sea.The surgery is now ready for its next step moving into the new Sudbury Health Centre due to open fully in 2014. It will be a one stop medical centre incorporating services such as Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Gym, MRI scans and various consultancies provided by West Suffolk Hospital thus much improving the NHS services in Sudbury.

2 Jonathan Glancy spoke in his capacity as a trustee of the steam locomotive trust responsible for building the first steam locomotive in this country for over 50 years. He explained that even though the technology to build more efficient steam engines was available then successive Governments have suppressed it in favour of deisel and electricity. There is now renewed interest in USA to return to steam using biomass fuel, perhaps.The nwe loco, called Tornado, has been built in Darlington during the past 18 years experiencing many delays due to finance, lack of skilled workers and availability of components.

It was particularly difficult to source a high pressure boiler and this was eventually built in Germany. Tornado is now running and is already booked to pull the royal train 6 times this year.

3 Rod Lovatt, club member, talked about his career as an Architectural Ironmonger. He is a member of the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers which runs a 3 year diploma course on the subject. It is a specialist business dealing in door and window furniture such as hinges, handles, locks, door closers and more recently in automatic door controls where the highest security models use eye scanners. Although he still does some consultancy work he is now mainly retired and assists his wife's donkey business visiting local shows, fetes etc.

4 Michael Finch, Managing Director of Pneumac Ltd, gave a presentation about his company which was started in 1976 by his father, Clifford Finch, well known then as a director of Wilsons Corn Mills. He set up the Company to produce an innovative grain sampler which he had invented to check the quality of grain as it reached the grain store. When his father died Michael took over the Company and has run it since from a small workshop in Hadleigh. It now produces a range of very specialist equipment for the grain, seed and brewery trade. Most of the items are produced in small batches, often to order and are made or assembled by hand. He brought along a selection of his products for members to examine including the standard grain sampler which is now used not only for grain but other items collected in bulk such as various types of seeds and coffee beans etc. Sieves of all sizes are made to suit all types of seeds and beans. Temperature monitors are used for checking hotspots in grain stores. Barley cutters or farinators are used in the brewery trade for checking the quality of the barley after it is roasted. He believes that only about 3 other companies produce this type of equipment and because the market is relatively small and specialised it is not worth the expense of patenting the designs. Pneumac now exports about 50% of its output to customers worldwide using the internet mainly for marketing. In this country Trading Standards and Port Health Authorities also use the products. It was nice to learn more of another of Hadleigh's many successful small businesses.

News from St Mary’s School Well done to all the children who were awarded certificates in our achievement assemblies at the end of the summer term.

We had lots of certificates to celebrate excellent behaviour and outstanding achievements. As usual, it was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents at the school to share in celebrating the children’s hard work. Also, it was great to see all the trophies, badges, certificates and medals showing the children’s achievements outside school. We have some really impressive musicians and sports stars!

Thank you to the Parent Support Group for organising cake sales for each class throughout the summer term. We have been delighted with all the cakes supplied by parents and thanks to all the parents and children who helped run the stalls after school. The funds raised have gone directly to each class to be spent on equipment and resources to benefit those children.

The summer fete was lots of fun. Thank you to all the members of the Parent Support Group, staff members and other volunteers, who helped to make it a great success.

For once, the weather was good and it was great to see so many people. Thanks to the karate team and the Majorettes for their performances. Also, it was lovely to see the alpacas fro the first time and the new dog show was really popular! Well done to all involved!

We are very sad to say goodbye to our Year 6 pupils, who have worked so hard at St Mary’s School.

They have set an excellent example to younger children with their effort, achievement and responsibility. The leavers’ service at St Mary’s Church was very entertaining. The children shared their memories and hopes for the future as well as demonstrating some wonderful musical talents! Well done to all involved.

Afterwards, parents were invited to a leavers’ tea where the Year 6s served refreshments and cakes. On the final day of term, the Year 6 children received gifts and certificates as part of the leavers’ celebrations. Once again, it was lovely to see so many parents. Also, thank you to Mrs Phillips, who presented the Rebecca Phillips Award for Outstanding Achievement to one of the pupils for his superb progress in mathematics. We are sure that the children will continue to do well at secondary school and wish them lots of luck for the future.

Pause for Thought Is it the end or is it the beginning? When one gets old so much has gone. Our bodies are running down and we are weak and feeble. Many friends and relatives have gone, and there is little to look forward to, and life can become all doom and gloom as you wait for the end. Praise God it doesn't have to like that. Life's end can be a beginning. The Bible promises that if I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and accept Him as my Saviour, then by His grace I can look forward to a glorious eternity with Him forever. I will be reunited with those who have gone before. The apostle Paul wrote, "...to be with Christ which is far better." It is the beginning of real life and not the end. Death becomes our friend and not out enemy. The best thing is that there is no need to wait for old age to have this blessed assurance. The joy of knowing Jesus Christ can be ours at any age.

Jerry’s Diary A new species for my local patch was seen at Giffords Park on 5th July. This was an adult Mediterranean Gull which was resting amongst 100+ Black Headed Gulls, which by the way do not have a black head but a chocolate brown head.

Mediterranean Gulls have a black head on summer adult birds. The beak is thicker and more blood red than on a Black Headed Gull. Nice photo of a Robin sent in to Other birds seen were, 14 Black me by Peter Cutts Tailed Godwits, 4 Greenshank, 12+ Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, several Peewits, 2 calling Redshanks, 1 Common Tern (which also has a black head and blood red beak), a pair of Teal, 24+ Shelducks, 4 Heron, 5 Little Egret and a hunting Hobby. At the end of June and the first two weeks of July I saw more young Tawny Owls. Birds were seen or heard at Ash Street, Semer Hill, Hadleigh river walk and railway walk. I have also seen more Barn Owls this year. Barn Owls were seen with prey food at Ash Street, Hill Farm Layham, Semer, Ramsey Wood Hintlesham and near Kersey sewer bed.

Reed Buntings are around in good numbers, 6+ were singing from rape crops in the Ash Street and Stone Street areas and 2 more in Tower Mill Lane, Hadleigh. Again Red Kites were seen from Hadleigh and Polstead Heath. Jane Upson was lucky to see a pair flying high over the garden in Aldham Road. The Hadleigh Cinderella The Hadleigh Cinderella panto is a written by Trev Clarke and is based in and around Hadleigh. The panto is based on the classic story of Cinderella with the ugly sisters, buttons and of course the handsome prince. You all know the story Cinderella is locked away with the ugly sisters pestering and nagging her all the time. Cinders goes to the ball and meets the prince looses the silver slipper and the prince goes and to find her and marries her. WRONG! forget the traditional panto and see a new LOCAL twist to an old tale. With fun and laughter for all the family including songs for all tastes this panto will get you in the Christmas mood as its being performed one week before Christmas.

We will also be looking for back stage and front of house crew , also any makeup artists or scenery painters would be a help.

This show is an independent team production with Jemma Gates and Niki Seager directing the show with the help of the writer. We also need actors/singers, backstage crew, scenery painters, make up and front stage helpers. The show is set to take place one week before Christmas with rehearsals planned for Wednesday nights and some Sundays running up to the show. Layham Parish Council The main matters discussed at the July meeting of the Council were: • Babergh District Council’s report noted that it was unlikely that small ‘hinterland’ villages such as Layham would need to consider developing a Neighbourhood Plan. The Local Plan would probably meet Layham’s needs, given the relatively small number of planned new housing – approximately 12 units over the next 25 years.

• Suffolk County Council had confirmed they had no objection to parishioners using the specially designed recycling bags provided by them and placing them in the textile collection bin in Layham.

• Two planning applications were discussed: The conversion of the residential part of the Marquis of Cornwallis building into a separate dwelling was questioned by councillors. It was thought that the intentions for the whole building should be established before any part of it was given separate planning permission.

The building of two large houses just inside the entrance drive to Raworth was also of concern. It was questioned whether the current entrance is a wide enough splay to cater for what could be a considerable increase in traffic on a long convex curve in the road. I was also necessary to clarify the status of the land earmarked for development as it appears to cross the ‘village envelope’ and stray into agricultural land.

• Several members of the public attended the PC meeting on 25 July and expressed concern about the 7.5 ton weight limit signs in Upper Layham – one large sign near Layham Hall was partly obscured. There was also concern about vehicles speeding through the village. Police officers were aware of this problem along Benton Street in Hadleigh, as well as in Upper Layham. The Chairman said there was a body of people active in reporting problems of this nature and suggested people look at the website: www.bentonstreetsqueeze.co.uk.

• The Clerk had written to Suffolk County Council concerning the ongoing problem of elder growing over the pavement between Upper Layham and Hadleigh. However, SCC had responded to say, due to budget cuts, they were only able to carry out this work annually.

• The Clerk would also write to Babergh’s Horticultural Officer concerning the hedge in Mill Lane, which was once again overgrown, and the trees which were overhanging the pavement.

• Councillors had met representatives from SCC’s Highways Department to discuss a number of issues raised by parishioners and also arising from the councillors’ ‘walkabout’ last year. Agreement was reached on a number of issues to be dealt with over the coming months and the PC would monitor progress.

• The National Grid Working Group had prepared Layham Parish Council’s response to the National Grid Connections Options Report, which had been endorsed by the Hadleigh Society and Hadleigh Town Council. In addition to the support received from Maggi Hambling, the Chairman reported that Griff Rhys-Jones had contacted him to offer his help.

• As noted last month, the Parish Plan workshop held on 12 June highlighted 3 main issues/suggestions: • Broadband • Speeding/traffic concerns • Lunch Club We are currently awaiting a summary of the report prepared by Suffolk ACRE. Layham Recycling Centre Our new centre, just inside the Brett Green gate to the playing field, as well as being convenient for many Layham residents, is already providing a modest but steady flow of income for the village. If we can maintain that income we will be able to fund small projects without extra demands upon your Community Charges.

In the months since the centre was opened we have received a total of £307 from the two companies that collect and recycle the textiles and the glass. So far, that extra cash has been used to provide four extra grit bins for roadside use.

You will all have received plastic bags from Suffolk County Council in which to store unwanted clothes, socks and shoes, boots, wellies, slippers, hats, scarves, gloves, blankets, sheets, pillow cases, handbags, belts, curtains, towels and stuffed toys. When you have accumulated a bagful PLEASE TAKE THE BAG TO THE TEXTILE BIN at the Recycling Centre rather than putting them in your blue bins.

By providing the bags, Suffolk County Council is making provision for people who do not have easy access to a local textile bank. It is greatly to our advantage that everyone uses our own facility and that our community benefits from the income. THANK YOU. From the Layham Archive Following on from the appeal for photographs of weddings that have taken place in Layham church, we have been given a number of photographs of the village in the 1950s and 1960s by Pauline Clements (nee Knights) who grew up in Layham and whose family lived in Mill Cottages.

The first photograph shows the organising committee for the 1957 children’s Christmas party held in the Village Hall. All but one of the committee has been named. Can you help with the last one and any of the missing first names?

Neighbourhood Watch We are told by the police that the most common rural crime at the moment is theft from outbuildings. Sheds are very vulnerable. If you store valuable tools in your shed consider investing in an alarm which emits a piercing sound when the door is opened. Hadleigh Police Station has shed alarms available for just £8 – call in between 1pm and 3pm on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

Layham Playgroup End of Term Celebrations We decided to celebrate the end of term at Layham Playgroup by having a special Treasure Hunt. The children had to solve a little puzzle which was on a scroll that would then lead them to the next clue. The pictures with the clues on were all hidden down the lane on the way to the park. Luckily we had some expert detectives on hand who managed to solve all the clues and find the treasure chest which was hidden in the park. The children were then joined by members of their families for a picnic in the park, which they had helped to prepare earlier that day by making the sandwiches. It was a lovely finish to the term, and we would like to say goodbye and good luck to all those children who are starting Nursery or School in September. We will miss you all and your families!

September Plans We are looking forward to starting a new term in September and welcoming back the children from their Summer holidays. We will be eager to hear their holiday news. Our focus for the half term will be autumn and harvest. The children will be visiting St Andrews church in Layham on 5th October for our Harvest celebrations, and will also be busy making a scarecrow for the Church’s festival during the weekend of 6th October.

Bingo Night We are in the process of planning a Bingo Night on Friday 5th October to take place in the Village Hall. Please contact the Playgroup for more information and for tickets, or have a look on our Website or Facebook page.

Our Toddler Group takes place every Wednesday morning, please come and join us for lots of fun and friendly faces. Starting in September, George from Brett River Children’s Centre will visit to run a five week baby/toddler yoga course between 10.30-11.00. This is sure to be good fun for you and your child!

Layham Playgroup is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh.

HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Hadleigh Town Council Meeting held on the 19th July 2012 Present: Councillors M Munson (Town Mayor), Angland, Byrne, Free, Grutchfield, Haylock, Lazenby (Deputy Mayor), Matthews, L. Munson and Whiting In attendance: PC. Matt Paisley (Suffolk Constabulary), Mr B. Beaumont, (Hadleigh Community Transport Group) and one member of the press APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors Amin, Cook, Clarke, Nevard and Sheldrick. These apologies were accepted.

MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Town Council held on the 21st June 2012 were taken as read were confirmed and signed.

MATTERS ARISING Residents Playground Request The Clerk advised that she had attended a meeting at Babergh District Council who were in agreement to Hadleigh Town Council taking over responsibility of this land to site a playground and were drawing up a legal contract. A letter had been sent to the residents requesting a meeting to ascertain their requirements for the playground.

At this point the meeting was adjourned to allow Mr. Beaumont to speak on the bus services the Community Service Group provide and additional services coming into effect in August in the evenings and on Sundays. Timetables can be obtained by ringing 828202.

POLICING PC Matt Paisley presented the Police Report for June and it was noted that 25 crimes had been recorded during the month, of which 7 had been detected.

The offences comprised as follows: 6 thefts; 6 criminal damage; 5 assault occasioning ABH; 2 burglaries; 1 criminal damage; 1 having an article with a blade/point in public; 1 make off without payment; 1 minor wound without intent; 1 drunk & disorderly in a public place and 1 fraud by false representation.

PC Paisley reported that he had met with Paul Little of Babergh District Council regarding the DPPO. They have reviewed the original consultation document and this is now ready for public consultation. He has also met with volunteers for the street watch scheme.

He answered Councillors questions on the stealing of lead from roofs on the industrial estate and car parking in the High Street specifically the enforcement of the two hour waiting restriction on the parking bays.

REPORTS OF THE DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Councillors Riley and Grandon had tendered their apologies . A written report had been provided by Councillor M Munson. She also reported that Home Start would be joining forces with the Iceni Project. Councillor Grutchfield advised that information from the recent Census should be available shortly.

REPORT OF THE COUNTY COUNCILLOR Councillor Grutchfield had provided a written report and advised that at the afternoon County Council meeting he had raised a question on care homes.

Councillor Matthews asked if Councillor Grutchfield had been able to obtain costings for the sensors installed on top of the lampposts. He advised that he had been unable to obtain any information to date and was asked if he would try again.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor reported a letter sent to a resident under Freedom of Information regarding the jubilee beacon and advised that this matter would be discussed at the September meeting.

STANDING ORDER NO. 24 Councillor Matthews asked if Hadleigh Town Council would monitor the situation with regard to the e.mail received from the NHS on the transfer of community services to Serco and the paragraph which states ‘there will be no change in services to patients’.

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £19,966.91 be approved for payment.

PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 5th July 2012 were noted, The Clerk advised that the meeting on the Neighbourhood Plan will be held on 20th September and Councillors Cook and Angland will attend.

SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 12th July 2012 was received and accepted including the recommendation to increase the cemetery charges by 5% to come into effect in October 2012.

NATIONAL GRID CONNECTION OPTIONS REPORT Councillor Byrne advised that the proposed meeting between the Dedham Vale and Stour Valley Groups had not taken place and asked Councillor Angland to report on the document. Councillor Angland provided the Clerk with her written response outlining objections to pylons in the Stour Valley and it was agreed that the Clerk incorporate these in a letter to the National Grid along with a letter supporting the documentation received from Layham Parish Council.

GENERAL POWER OF COMPETANCE The Council resolves that from this date, until the next relevant Annual Meeting of the Council, that having met the conditions of eligibility as defined in the 24

Localism Act 2011 and The Parish Councils (General Power of Competence)(Prescribed Condition) Order 2012 No. 965, it will adopt the General Power of Competence.

CODE OF CONDUCT In accordance with S26 to 37 of the Localism Act on 19 July 2012 Hadleigh Town Council resolved to adopt the Suffolk Local Code of Conduct for the purposes of discharging its duty to promote and maintain high standards of conduct within its area. New Register of Interest Forms will be supplied to all Councillors.

TOWN CREST The Clerk read the request received from the newly formed Hadleigh Community Choir for permission to use the Town Crest as a badge and to take one of the colours from the crest for their uniform. Their request was unanimously agreed.

MATTERS ARISING The Clerk was asked if she had contacted Babergh District Council regarding the availability of Section 106 monies. She advised that a monthly update will be sent by e.mail.

The Chair reported that the minutes advised that the signage to Durrant Park had been covered up but this was inaccurate and a request had been made to Babergh District Council requesting Persimmons to cover the signage until approval for the name had been received.

The Clerk reported the reply received from Babergh District Council on the property at 63 Aldham Road which advised that they could not enforce completion of buildings.

Councillor Haylock reported that the Stour Valley and Hintlesham Groups of objectors had both sent letters to the National Grid supporting undergrounding of electricity cables.

Councillor Lazenby asked if the Clerk had received pupil figures for Hadleigh Schools to date she had not.

At this point the meeting was adjourned to allow a member of the public to speak on the consultation document available to residents on the Core Strategy.

CORE STRATEGY Councillor Angland reported on the Working Party meeting held on the 31st August 2012 held to discuss the current modifications that have been published concentrating on the Hadleigh area. Requests from Hadleigh Town Council to include Open Space, the needs of elderly people to provide suitable accommodation for independent living and drainage implications had been included and these were the main modifications for Hadleigh.

The Clerk advised that there were concerns over the number of houses and if the infra-structure could support future developments.

It was agreed that a formal document will need to be put together and it would be helpful if maps were included to support the recommendations and this will be discussed at the next Planning Committee Meeting on Wednesday 29th August 2012 before it is submitted to Babergh District Council.

The Clerk reported that Councillor Haylock had advised her that she and a number of residents were concerned over the state of the bungalow on Bridge Street which was owned by Tesco. The Clerk had contacted Babergh District Council but to date no response had been received.

Councillor Free asked if the Clerk would look at the Waterfield House Planning Application to see if frosted glass should be on some of the windows as residents in Grays Close have complained that they can see into the building.

HDTA Welcomes Brentwood Twinning One of our fellow Twinning associations from Brentwood, Essex recenly visited Hadleigh and were so impressed with our town that they returned in July bringing a coach of their French visitors from Montbazon. They were treated to an informative talk about historic Hadleigh by Jan Byrne in the Guildhall followed by a buffet lunch in the Garden which was excellently prepared by the catering committee of our own association. They then had a walk around the town visiting our shops and enjoying our old buildings.

On Sunday 19th August we had our annual garden party courtesy of Pat & Clive Claireaux. Despite a sharp shower the weather continued it's heatwave and we relaxed and danced to Lyndy Lou while eating sandwiches and cakes.

Our next event is a Race Night in the Ansell Hall on Sat October 20th.

Why Practise Yoga?

I am sure all readers know what yoga is about – in general terms, at least – so I would like to focus this brief article on why anyone would want to practice yoga. What would be the benefits in taking up yoga and maintaining a regular practice?

Movement and Stretching: Although physical movement is only one aspect of what yoga is about, this is the part that most people are aware of and the part that is most often incorporated into group classes in Europe. One of the most important things any of us can do for our bodies is to move each joint through its full range of movement each day. Many yoga postures also help to improve muscle tone and strength. Leading on from that, it is also important to stretch and lengthen our muscles, to reduce the risk of stiffness and tightness building up in and around our joints.

Correct Breathing and Breath Control: It is well-known that much of the time most of us only use a small proportion of our lung capacity. The effect of poor breathing goes beyond the lungs as it also has an effect on our mood, posture and energy levels. Yoga helps improve breath control and the fundamental link between movement and breathing.

State of wellbeing Very simply put, this is the essential aim of yoga. Correct movement, stretching and correct breathing all lead towards a state of equilibrium but specific practices can help calm stress levels or increase energy levels, as appropriate.

On another level, meditation and concentration exercises can help centre us and draw us back towards a state a harmony.

Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis and Essential Exercise!

Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis are both bone-related conditions which people do not generally associate with exercise. Individuals will often cease sport and exercise because their arthritis is causing pain or may not commence exercise because of an osteoporosis or arthritis diagnosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition associated with the gradual thinning of bones. It most commonly affects women, but men can also develop the condition.

Risk factors include the menopause, low calcium diet and reduced exercise as well as the lack of other healthy lifestyle practices. It can be prevented by building or maintaining bone mass and this can be achieved by leading a healthy lifestyle with a balanced calcium-rich diet and by performing weight-bearing exercises. This will also help to reduce the progression of osteoporosis after diagnosis, so it is important to take up the right activities and diet once you discover that your bones have begun to thin. Weight training can also help with the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis because it stresses the muscles which pull on the bones, stimulating a bone-building response. Essentially any activity which stresses the bones will promote an increased bone density.

Osteoarthritis is a condition which occurs due to the breakdown of cartilage within the joint. As the cartilage is broken down, the bones begin to rub against each other inside the joint. This often results in stiffness, pain and a reduced range of motion. When the pain begins to develop and a diagnosis of osteoarthritis is found, many will stop exercising due to discomfort. Despite what you may think, exercise is actually one of the best ways to prevent and manage osteoarthritis. Regular, moderate exercise has been shown to reduce pain, increase joint range of motion and strengthen the muscles around a joint to protect it from further damage.

Creating for the ReLoved project Members of the Country Threads craft group were delighted to learn that local sales of tickets for the St Elizabeth Hospice raffle netted the princely sum of £611.00. Punters were clearly tempted, not only by the worthy cause, but also, for the opportunity to win the group’s magnificent hand crafted quilt. The raffle, which was launched in May, was drawn on 3rd August 2012 at The Hospice.

When all the sums were done it yielded a staggering £36,000. The organisers and the quilters would like to say a big thank you to all who contributed and made this impressive total possible. The Porch Project This is just a reminder that the porch project will now be running a more efficient project in respect of security. Young people will have to pay ÂŁ3 for a years membership at the project and in return will recieve a fob and a lanyard which will allow them to sign in and out electronically from the Porch Project.

We need parental consent forms to be downloaded on our website www.porchproject.co.uk and then handed back to us in order to log the young peoples details. We are hoping to launch the new education suite also in October. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank on behalf of the Porch Project Barabara Boyd and Hadleigh Thrift shop for their continued support and finances going towards making the lives of young people more positive.

One of the group of notable buildings in Hadleigh is the Market Hall/Guild Hall complex. A building which has been part of the rich history of this ancient town for close on 800 years. The Market Hall is the part situated on the far side of the churchyard running parallel to the church. The Guild Hall, originally thought to have been a separate building, built c1451 is situated at right angles to the former, running back to Market Place. It is thought the two buildings were ‘joined’ together shortly before this period.

Over the years the complex has served the town in a number of guises - guild hall, workhouse, elementary and grammar school, and even a corset factory.

By far the longest of these was that of the parish workhouse, which operated between 1574 and 1834. As an entity parish workhouses predate those large incorporation and union workhouses, like the one built at Semer in the 1780s which our more recent ancestors lived in permanent fear of incarceration.

Instigated by a series of Acts of Parliament in the second half of the 16th century, parish workhouses were introduced as a potential solution to a problem created in part by a rapidly expanding population. They were specifically aimed at paupers willing but unable to help themselves, a group known as the Deserved Poor.

Parish workhouses were individually managed enterprises, run by the local parish vestry. An ‘Overseer of the Poor’ was appointed from the ranks of the vestry to manager of the whole operation. It was his or her role to acquire and distribute the parish relief to its own poor.

Hadleigh was one of the very first towns to adopt this method of poor relief. The earliest known reference being 1574 when children of poor families unable to provide for them, were ‘put up’ by the town. The intention being to give them a basic education and an introduction to a work ethos. Within the year this had been expanded to include local ‘rogues and vagabond’ to get them off the street. They were expected to work in the various preparatory jobs of the spinning trade.

One of Hadleigh’s first overseers was shoemaker John Allen. In 1595 he was contracted to provide food and clothing for up to 30 inmates. Initially his remuneration for this was the rents and profits from the market and fair.

Hadleigh’s parish workhouse proved so satisfactory it was highlighted in the 1601 Act as an example of how a well run organisation could benefit the community. Gaps in Hadleigh’s archive mean little is known of the comings and going at the workhouse from about 1600 up to the last decades of the 18th century. In 1782 Robert Tyler of Rattlesden applied for the vacant position of Governor of the workhouse.

In return for his commitment he was to receive the princely sum of 2 shillings per week for each inmate. From this he had to pay for the care and maintenance of the inmates. The remainder being his salary. An accompanying inventory gives up a picture of how the guild hall was laid out. 19 separate rooms were identified including a kitchen, pantry, brewing rooms, and 6 bedrooms which contained at least 35 beds. It was common in this period of time for 4 inmates to a bed, suggesting 140 inmate capacity.

Hadleigh retained its independence until the 1834 New Poor Law System when it was swallowed up by the newly formed Cosford Union Over 200 of these locally run premises are known to have existed in Suffolk at one time or other. A surviving example is the house on the A134 at Assington currently under renovation.

And finally a plea to all you owners of property of some age, especially in Layham. If you have access to your property deeds check them out, to see if there is any reference to it being used as a parish workhouse at any time before 1834. In Layham we know of two fields called Workhouse piece, but as yet we have not been able to specifically identify where the building was situated. It is possible a James Berry of Hadleigh was owner in the early 1800s.

Waterfield House Care Home in Grays Close, Hadleigh is officially “Bloomin Marvellous”. The Home has just been announced as the winner of the Runwood Homes Senior Living Annual Competition designed to encourage Residents to get involved in creating beautiful gardens which they enjoy and be proud of.

“As Fighter Command brought us salvation (Battle of Britain), so Bomber Command will bring us victory” Winston Churchill With the unveiling by Her Majesty the Queen of the R.A.F.Bomber Command Memorial in London in June and the forthcoming September anniversary of The Battle of Britain, it seems appropriate to recall the sacrifice of three men from Hadleigh serving in the Second World War with the R.A.F. WILLIAM ERNEST GRAY of 153, Angel Street trained and served as a Wireless Operator / Air gunner, part of the two man crew of a Bristol Blenheim in it's night fighter role during the early stages of the war in 1941. In 1943 he joined the newly formed 625 Squadron of Bomber Command and was retrained to fly as crew in the Avro Lancaster Mark 3, essentially a night bomber. At 08.04hrs. on the 9th of November 1943 a small force of seven Lancasters made a daring low level daylight raid on an oil refinery at Wanne Eickel in Germany. Flight Sergeant Gray's aircraft was shot down over the target and all seven crew members perished. William Gray was age thirty two and his remains were buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetary, (Plot 4.

A.14). A memorial plaque was formed on the front of their new house at No. 2, Aldham Road by his brother John but was never inscribed due to John's subsequent death.

FELIX J. MOWLES was a Sgt. Flight Engineer on a Handley Page Halifax of Bomber Command completing a full tour of night operations upon which he was stood down for an extended rest. Bomber Command was considered the Allies most hazardous and highest risk force of the war, matched only in risk level on the German side by the Uboat wolf pack crews. On returning to duty Felix volunteered to join No.161 (Special Duties) Squadron all members of which were tour experienced veterans employed on S.O.E. operations over Nazi occupied Europe. There is no full account of their losses and they were known as a "Black Squadron", the highest level of secrecy. It was on a lone operation to drop four Special Agents who were to help organise resistance in Czechoslovakia that their Halifax was shot down by a German night fighter just short of their destination, Prague. There were no survivors and the crew were buried in a temporary grave apart from the four agents. Later their remains were transferred to Durnbach Commonwealth War Grave Cemetary, south of Munich. Felix Mowles was age twenty two and married when he died on the night of 14th of March 1943.

FRANCIS E. RICHARDSON was like Bill Gray a W.Op./AG., a Flight Sergeant with No. 236 Squadron of Coastal Command flying from a base near Dyfed in South Wales on maritime escort duties over the Irish Sea. Due to a reported Uboat presence they were ordered to stay airborne until it was cricital for them to return to base or land elsewhere. As they became periously low on fuel the pilot turned for R.A.F. Caernarfon, North Wales but one mile off of the coast of Anglesea within the site of two airfields, he was forced to ditch the Mark 1V Blenheim. The pilot and observer were later rescued by a trawler but there was no sign of Richardson. His body was later recovered and taken ashore at R.A.F. West Freugh, Wigtonshire some 120 miles from the ditching point, having drifted in the Gulf Stream kept afloat by his Mae West life jacket. He was cremated just over a month later and his ashes are in a niche in the Temple of Remembrance at Ipswich Crematorium. Francis lived with his parents who were the licensees of The King's Head, Benton Street and was age 23 years when he drowned on 15th. of September 1941.

Hadleigh Chamber Series Since moving to Hadleigh a few years ago, I have been enjoying the country life after fifteen years of London. I have set up some harp teaching in a few Suffolk schools and have some private harp students, however my playing work mostly takes me away from Suffolk. This made me think that it would be nice to set up a Chamber Music Series in St Mary's Church. I am hoping to run 3-6 concerts a year, sometimes featuring myself and sometimes my friends.

There are all sorts of wonderful combinations of instruments to be heard! The format is to be a concert for children in the afternoon at 3pm and then a more traditional evening concert at 7.30pm.The first will be the beautiful combination of the flute, viola and harp on the 22nd September.

Local artist Hilli Thompson will be exhibiting some of her work in the church that day. As will Matthew Tsmarkalis. So, even if you are unable to come to either concert, please do pop in while we are are rehearsing. They will both have items for sale. Tatty Broyds and Osborn & William will also be running small stalls and St Mary's are providing a refreshment service. I do hope that I shall see lots of you there. What is the best thing about being a pub landlady?

I love being a landlady! I have been doing this for over twenty years, I enjoy meeting new people, I love entertaining people and I love to see people laugh.

Losing over 4 stone has made me happier in my own skin!

Emma Clarke joined Slimming World weighing 14 stones 9 and a half pounds, wearing size 18 clothes.

Now in size 10! And down to 10 stones 7 pounds, Emma has more energy for the children she teaches as a Primary School teacher and a new love for food and exercise.

THE ARTIST (PG) £3.50 We Celebrate the Early Days of Hollywood THE ARTIST is an utterly beguiling, silent, black & white celebration of the pre-talkies cinema.The film, which won Best Picture at the Oscars 2012, is a true silent movie, screened in black and white with its occasional lines of dialogue printed on cards for added effect.The story centres on an established film star in late twenties and early thirties Hollywood during the rise of talking pictures. THE ARTIST begins with a film premiere where movie star George Valentin is screening his latest film - a swashbuckler in the Douglas Fairbanks tradition. In true Hollywood style George meets Peppy Miller who gets a small part in his next production and as they fall in love, their relationship is threatened by the arrival of talking pictures. Will Valentine survive when sound now dominates the screen? We will not spoil the plot at this stage! CANTERBURY HOUSE WELCOMES THE WEDNESDAY LUNCH CLUB On 15th August the Wednesday Lunch Club enjoyed a superb lunch at Canterbury House Care Home at the kind invitation of their manager, Matthew Scarlett. Arrangements had been in place to use the facilities at Canterbury House during the refurbishment of the Ansell Centre – which had been due to take place in July/August.

Unfortunately Babergh District Council has not yet granted permission for this much needed work – but the visit to Canterbury House went ahead as planned. It gave all the volunteers at the Lunch Club a welldeserved rest and everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch in a wonderful setting. Many thanks to Matthew, the chefs and all the staff at Canterbury House for their hospitality and their caring community spirit.

Dear Readers, welcome to the latest news from the Station. In recent weeks I have had several conversations with local residents about the number of bikes that seemingly appear abandoned on street corners, or pathways. If you see a bike left unattended and you know it has been there for several days, or it looks like it is ready for the scrap heap, you can either retrieve the item and let us know, or ask us to collect it and we will take it to the Police Station.

Lost and stolen bikes have become a mystery to me over the course of my career. On patrol, I often see bikes left on driveways, front gardens, or outside houses over night. There is often an attitude that suggests the bike won’t be stolen or removed, but unfortunately my experience tells me that the opposite is in fact the case. Having recovered quite a few, I can say that we have accumulated a number of bikes in varying condition, from very old, to almost new, but we never seem to reunite these with the owners. Further more, we recover more bikes than what have been reported stolen, and rarely are we able to match a recovered bike with a stolen report.

If you have been the victim of a bike theft and not reported it, please make contact with me, or a member of the team. We can then look through our stock to see if we have your bike.

Recently, I publicised the fact that Suffolk Police no longer hold a stock of no waiting cones. We still are receiving calls requesting cones for varying demands. I reiterate that suspending parking areas is no longer something that Suffolk Police are able to do, unless in an emergency. If you are planning a large event and require roads to be closed, or parts of roads to be coned off, you will need to speak directly to Suffolk County Council. However, if you are after one or two cones in order to assist you with a house move, for instance, the Council cannot help, and you will need to speak with your removals company for their advice.

This takes me on to my next subject of parking. Over the years I have written and spoke about parking issues on a regular basis. You all should know by now that parking or waiting on a single yellow line between 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday is prohibited. Waiting on double yellow lines at any time is prohibited. We are still receiving complaints from people who receive tickets for breaching these regulations. If you park illegally there is a chance you will get a parking ticket. This includes parking bays that carry a time limit. We can’t enforce the restrictions every day, but that is no excuse. After all, people don’t generally go shoplifting just because a Police Officer isn’t about.

Finally, at the beginning of August we received reports of vehicles being entered overnight and items being stolen from within. None of these cars were damaged, and entry was gained because the cars were left unlocked. Please do not make life easy for criminals. Put all valuable items out of sight, and make sure your vehicles are locked and secured.

Library Link Congratulations to all the children who have so far completed the reading challenge by reading six books over the summer holidays. It’s not too late to complete that fifth and sixth book as our presentation will be on Tuesday 11th September at 4.30 so you’ve just got time! It’s along the Railway walk!

The Slugs!

The first one you’ll think of when I mention these creatures is the Black-Slug (Arion ater). It’s the largest in the UK up to 100mm (4 inches) long and lives mainly on rotting vegetation, fungi and occasionally rotting meat. But there are several others Red-Slug (Arion rufus) are a little smaller than the black variety (5060mm (2.5 inches) long and not quite so rounded.

They often have a bright orange “rim� round their lower edge.

The ones the farmers and gardeners dislike because of the damage they do are the Field-Slug (Derocereas reticulatum) and Garden Slug (Arion hortensis) both are up to 4050mm long with colours varying from almost white to grey/green stripes.

They’ll eat almost any form of vegetation.

Keel Slug (Tandoria budapestensis) These are quite small (only around 25 mm) and vary in colour from black to almost white. They live mainly underground; eating-off plant roots and boring holes into root-crops like potatoes.

Technically they are all Molluscs belonging to a group called “Gastropods� and are distantly related to things like the snails and octopus. There are only the five species native to the UK and I’ve found all of them along the Railway, however worldwide there are thousands, living in every type of environment except deserts.

They’re a very strange and different group of animals – I’ll explain!

As you can see in the photos they appear to have four eyes, each at the end of a stalk. The real eyes - the upper pair – are very basic and best described as “light-receptors�; able to detect light and dark, and probably some images, but little detail. The lower pair are sensory organs able to detect sounds, vibrations, and smells within their environment. All four are retractable and can be drawn back into the head for protection. One of the wonderful things is that losing one of these organs in an accident is not a problem – Slugs simply grow a new one. Their blood is very different to ours! Humans and most animals carry oxygen round their bodies using red blood (haemoglobin) which is based on iron. In slugs it is based on copper, making it very pale green (cyanoglobin), which is why you never see any real “blood� if you tread on one.

They have a brain of sorts. It’s not a single organ like ours but a number of coordinated nerve centres distributed throughout their body, each controlling specific body-parts. They have to breathe to exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen the same as we do, but they don’t have lungs. A slug does it by drawing air through a hole at the back of its head (you can see this happening in the photos) into a single chamber where the gases are exchanged through a very fine membrane.

Their hearts are different! Humans have four chambers with which to pump the blood round our bodies, theirs only a single chamber.

We can walk about, but they move by “sealing� the lower surface of their bodies to things with a layer of slime, and by changing the shape of their muscles they “slide� themselves forward using suction to “hang-on� to almost any solid surface. Dry, dusty surfaces will defeat them, but loose surfaces are OK as long as they not too steep.

They don’t have any hard skeleton and can “flow� through quite small holes simply by changing their body shape, once through they’ll chew their way through any plant material they find. (Yes - they’ve actually got teeth resembling the surface of a very course engineer’s metal-working file). I can’t say that they’ve got any particular appeal to me as animals, but they are certainly different and interesting!

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts The Olympics are over. We have celebrated the athletes, the volunteers, and the buildings, but very little has been said about the park and garden that has been created to contain the buildings, and very few gardeners have had the chance to see it. If you wonder what I am talking about, type "garden olympic park" into your favourite internet search engine, and look at the pictures that come up. The organisers gave the visiting sports enthusiasts a display of British Gardening at its best. The pictures suggest that the bedding displays were as good as those at the 10 yearly Floriade exhibition at Venlo on the Dutch German boarder to which I went. It will be interesting to see what the Olympic Park looks like next year.

There was quite a lot in common between the ideas used in the two gardens.

Both had super colourful examples of highly managed meadow planting largely based on British Wildflowers and Grasses. Both had perennial borders based on plants originating on the North American Prairies. The popular bedding plants at Floriade were, Echinacea (The Purple Cone Flower) , Verbena bonariensis, and Gaura Lindheimer. I use and am familiar with the first two, but the Gaura was a surprise. I tried it once, and was disappointed with it. I shall have to try it again.

In common with a lot of people in Hadleigh I did not spray early enough and got caught by potato blight this year. I quickly removed the tops, and have got a useful crop although nowhere near what it would have been if I could have let them grow to maturity, Apples and tomatoes are very late ripening, but runner and french beans are doing well.

This is nearly twice our average monthly rainfall. This rainfall brought the 3 month figure up to 233 mm (9.2") which is 1.55 times the average rainfall.

At first sight we have now had plenty of rain, but so far in August the heavy rain seems to have missed us, and after a series of hot dry days I am finding it necessary to water some shallow rooted plants. In July the maximum temperature was 29 Cel (84F). The minimum was 8 Cel (46F), both of which are typical for the month. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 19 Cel (66F), which is the warmest that I have recorded.

Hints

By September most annuals will be past their best, so we have to rely on the late flowering summer perennials like michaelmas daisies, and sedums to provide the floral display supported by half hardy perennials like dahlias and a second flush on some of the roses. In all cases it is worth cutting dead flowers off as this promotes more flowers. September is the right time to tidy up lavender bushes, but do not cut back into old wood, as lavenders will not shoot from old wood.

September is the month to buy Spring flowering bulbs. If you want to have them flowering indoors for Christmas they need to be planted immediately. To be successful the bulbs have to make good roots in advance of sending up their flower spikes. To do this they need to be kept quite cool after planting, and in the dark. This is not easy in a modern house. One could bury the planted pots in the garden, but if the bulbs are being grown in bulb fibre in pots with no drainage holes they are likely to get too wet. I have used the attic, but then you do need to remember to water them occasionally.

September is a good time for taking cuttings of plants that you want to increase. The range of possibilities is wide. Three inch half hard non flowering shoots will work for a lot of plants. I shall be using the technique on a new penstemon and a new campanula that I bought.

Dear Sir On 27th July The ABF – The Soldiers Charity, ran a street collection in Hadleigh, Boxford and Groton. Local generosity is tremendous. The sum raised was £870.91. To everyone who gave, and everyone who helped – thank you.

Some people may be confused that Help for Heroes were collecting on the same day. This was pure coincidence. Street collections have to be licensed.

Collections on shop premises do not. The end result is that service charities had a very good day. For those of you who wonder what the ABF does, it’s this. The fund collects money from the public, and from soldiers. This money is used to support more than seventy charities, such as Combat Stress, BLESMA and St Dunstans, plus some 4000 individual cases of hardship each year, plus some old soldiers of our former colonies, especially in Africa and the Caribbean. Any old soldier, or widow, can be helped by the fund. Lots of them really are quite old. Even the youngest National Serviceman is now 72! For the aged the pension arrangements aren’t as generous as they are today, so the fund has plenty to do and needs all the help it can get. We help the young too. So, once again, thank you, Hadleigh, Boxford and Groton.

Dear Sir I felt compelled to write in following my daughter’s attendance at the Hadleigh Summer Play Scheme 2012 organised for a week in August. On behalf of all those whose children attended I wanted to thank Sheena Lewis and Emma Broomfield (the play scheme organisers), all the team leaders, volunteers and all who were involved who worked so incredibly hard to make it such a fantastic time for the children. It was the first time my daughter had attended anything like this being 6 years old but she absolutely loved it... her first words to me in the morning of that week would be “when am I going to Playscheme?”! There were so many exciting multiple activities and art and crafts, too many to mention, but I know she loved holding a “giant lizard” (Iguana!) through the mobile zoo, the fire station visit and the water “play” session (complete with pistols!) on the last day. This is not to mention coming home daily armed with her produce and obligatory (for her!) tattoo (temporary!!) and face paint! I can only imagine how much hard work had to go into orgainising such a event for nearly 100 children for 5 days! We are so incredibly lucky in Hadleigh to have such a great scheme for the children in the summer through such great people organising and helping in it, people outside the town I have spoken to have been very envious!

On July 31st at 12.50pm I parked in Magdalen road car park only to find, along with others, both short stay ticket machines not working. Unable to obtain a ticket I did my shopping and was surprised, on returning to my car to find a parking charge affixed to the windscreen. I appealed against this, as it was not for want of trying that I was ticketless. During the course of correspondence relating to the parking charge, I was informed by BDC that should the short stay ticket machines be out or order then short stay tickets can be obtained at the long stay machine. I as a long term Hadleigh-ite was unaware of this and wondered if others were similarly unaware, so I thought I would share the information. More alarming is that as there is no indication on either short stay machines that this is the case, how would visitors to Hadleigh know?

Dear Sir Whereas I am delighted with Babergh's plans to develop East House, not many residents are aware that planning approval is being sought to build private, detatched houses on a sizeable chunk of parkland at the rear of the existing East House boundary. One small planning notice displayed during peak holiday time and closing date for objections 29 August, before the next issue of this magazine - coincidence perhaps? A total of 14 trees will be destroyed along with precious green space. When the population of Hadleigh is growing, surely park amenities should increase in proportion, not diminish for the sake of financial profit? Come on Babergh, uphold your planning principles to protect the environment and amenities on behalf of the community, and restrict this development to the existing boundaries of East House. Every square metre of green space is essential in this area of our town.

Dear Sir I was shocked to read the application for development of East House and houses on the park. Obviously we all want to see East House used but why build "executive" houses on the park? We all need our green spaces. It seems to me that the notice has been put up at a time when a lot of people are on holiday and the notice is just on the garage door beside East House, so the casual passer-by would not realise that the application affects the park. The application is no. B/12/00891/DPA and I hope your readers will object to this.

Dear Sir When I knocked on many hundreds of Hadleigh resident’s doors leading up to the local district election over a year ago, the second most ‘popular’ local concern, or matter of interest, was East House. Well, there has now been a development and I think the Hadleigh community would wish to be aware of it and possibly respond, whether for or against. The proposal, as I understand it, is to divide East House into two homes and secondly, to use part of East House Meadow (ie the park next to the swimming pool, the area behind East House which is park land) to build 4 dwellings with gardens. Please see the Babergh DC web site for more information on this (for assistance on how to navigate the site see below *). I am on the Development Committee, and must remain open minded on this matter and so I will not be commenting, but as Hadleigh residents or users of the park you have an opportunity to write or to email your views (scroll down on the Application Details page to Submit Representations, to email your comments to the Planning Department) or send a letter to Babergh.

Hadleighs Footpath Volunteers September 2012 Walk Our walk this month will be on Saturday 15th September. We will leave from St. Marys School, Stonehouse Road, at 9am. and we will walk to Stratford St. Marys via Layham, Shelley, Giffords Hall, Withermarsh Green, Thorington Street, and Langham. We will then return to Hadleigh by Bus leaving Stratford St. Mary at 1.45pm. and arriving back at 2.16pm. This walk is 8 miles in length, and is suitable for all walkers and dogs. We recommend strong shoes, or walking boots to be worn as parts of the walk can be rough and wet in places.

There are some stunning views on this walk especially around Giffords Park, and in the Stour Valley.

On a sunny day in August members of Hadleigh Evening WI enjoyed some gentle exercise - a ramble around Layham fields and along the towpath of the river Brett. Now the Olympics are over what is the legacy? In Hadleigh in addition to the swimming pool we now have the new Leisure facilities currently under construction in Stonehouse Road which I understand could be completed in October. These will include the use of a Gym with a 30 station fitness suite, access to the 25 metre Swimming Pool and Group Fitness Classes. Members will receive a five stage lifestyle journey where goals and aims will be identified and a programme personalised to help each individual to achieve these goals and gain a healthier lifestyle. . When it is open in October chief executive Tracey Copping has invited WI members to a complimentary tour of the facilities, a taster session of individual choice followed by coffee in one of the new community rooms. Rae Stapleton is arranging a trip to the Spa Pavilion theatre Felixstowe on 8 September. Looking further ahead our meeting on 18 December will be held at Corncraft Restaurant in Monks Eleigh and will include a Christmas dinner and Carol Singing The next meeting will be on 18th September in the Seminar suite above the library starting 7.30pm. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Boy! Did I need that rest but, I’m now looking forward to the Autumn Term which will start on Monday 10th September. Before the break we had all been busy at the Shelley Centre with lots of fundraising happening around the place, along with all the special events and achievements happening. Although this being said it is always busy around summer time at the Shelley Centre, with all the horses looking forward to the holidays. I heard that Shannon may be going to the Caribbean, but that may just be horsey rumour. I never have travelled anywhere, although I do love it in this room, it’s lovely and warm all year round, however I wish I could get hold of some of that lovely green grass: it’s been growing wonderfully at the moment and it’s making all the horses put on weight, if they eat much more their girth will not fit (How embarrassing would that be!). But Lyn will soon get them back in to shape, Rupert will not like that. We sometimes have conversations when she is on her lunch break – which brings me to a little secret – but, then, thinking about it, it is a secret so I mustn’t tell otherwise no one will tell me anything anymore.

I was pleased that Isabel won a Highly Commended Medal for Special Achievement in Riding from the Wednesday pm ride for overcoming great barriers and still being able to ride with confidence, and Ivan from the Tuesday morning group won the Cup. We also had the Shelley Show during June, which was great apart from the English weather. The Shelley Centre has decided to showcase this event every year, and this time some generous sponsors donated some spectacular winner cups; however my winning days are over although I did like being a champion, I thought it suited me. Lots of the riders showed their skill and connection between themselves and the horse. Overall the event was a success with the dressage and countryside challenge competitions.

One of my favorite riders who came first in the junior dressage trot class scoring 89 points was riding Holly. Holly and I sometimes have some great talks through the room window and I hope to think that we get on really well, but we haven’t been able to talk much recently with her busy schedule, and even when she is at her stable, she is always trying to get rid of the flies, which are a problem this time of year as they affect all the horses, but Lyn does have her magic spray, which makes it all better. Something special happened during June with a special award being given out. On the 27th two great boys had their Horse Care Bronze test, which is a first for the Shelley Centre on records and they scored 98% which is fantastic. And it gets even better, because one of the boys told me that they were the highest marks ever given, and the star quality folders which they produced have been taken by the examiners to be sent to the National office to be photocopied, to be shown as an example to other people who attempt this hard but worthwhile award. The whole centre has heard about this award and that they are all known across the place and people are very proud, especially Anne their ride Instructor who prepared them for the test.

June was a great month and I am buzzing all over because of it. The place is full of good spirit and joy which is always a good thing to end a year on, and I am so excited for September when we all start in over again. I do hope to see everyone back well and fighting fit including the horses. The holiday is a great time to let my mane down, although saying that I do get a bit lonely but we will see people around and about making sure that we all get fed and exercised, which is a shame for Jet because he just loves to be lazy unlike Fleur and Holly who will gallop and roll about all day. Jan Doe faces a four stroke cut in her handicap after winning the Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver in the annual Newton Green Golf Club festival week. The 36-handicapper, who joined the club only a few months ago, came out top of the pile in a record 128-strong field in the main event of the week. She registered 41 points, leading home Chris Stebbing, who edged out third place Guy Holliday on count back. Both were both on 39 points. The two leading men have also joined Newton in recent months, with Holliday being the first pay and play Davey member to register a top three position in a golf week event. The leading junior in the salver was Suffolk age group player 12-year-old Harvey Watts, Jonathan Lambert present the salver to Jan Doe who recorded 37 points off a handicap of 18. Overall, he was fifth, having a week earlier led home the field in the Kelvin Sansum Memorial Trophy with a tally of 43 points.

In addition to Jan Doe, another successful women competitor during the week was Sheila Walter, who won the Kiskadee Trophy with partner Nick Smith, and also featured in the second place team in the Delaney Scramble. This event also featured Nick Smith in the winning four. Jonathan Lambert presented the main prizes of the week at a sell-out presentation evening on Saturday. The festival broke all previous records, with 480 entries spread across seven different format competitions, and raised in excess of £1,000 for club funds.

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group These are exciting times at Friars Road, with the 1st XI closing in on promotion to the Two Counties top flight for the first time in 22 years. Josh Davey’s team have gone eight matches without defeat, and are leading the way with four games to play at the time of writing. The two key matches recently were at Worlington, where Hadleigh inflicted the much fancied home side’s first defeat at home for two years, which Tim Rix called the best all-round performance in which he had ever been involved. It was a rare close win in Dean Headley opening the what has been a season of convincing new artificial wicket with victories, perhaps none more so than the club chairman Gary Girling following week’s hammering of Dunmow. We and HCC junior members have all known early wickets to tumble, but the opposition found themselves in the barely comprehensible position of 118, with seven batsmen out without scoring. Kyle Tanner and James Gilderson had produced one of the most destructive opening spells of bowling in the club’s history. The most remarkable thing about Dunmow’s eventual total of 22 was that it did not break any records. The lowest score against Hadleigh was recorded in 1962 by Sudbury Rugby Club, who apparently only managed a try (5)! The 2nd team have slipped off the pace a little, but the Sunday 1st XI are also within touching distance of promotion. Nikhil Ellis has been in blistering form, hitting two hundreds against Mellis and Exning, and it is now just a matter of bonus points between Martin Grayling’s side and a place among the Suffolk Sunday elite, where the likes of Tymal Mills have a tendency to pop up! Peter Tampion’s Academy XI have not seen as much action recently as they would have liked, but the performances of the youngsters continue to be noteworthy. Tommy Newbigging won the Hunts County Bats Cricket League junior player of the month award for July for some excellent all-round performances, while Sam Renshaw made his 2nd XI debut and Callum Morrin overcame a nasty blow behind the stumps at Walsham-le-Willows to impress with the bat.

The big event at the club recently was the official opening of our new £8,900 artificial wicket. Former England player Dean Headley was the guest of honour and he got first use of the surface in the match against BBC Radio Suffolk. It was a great evening, with plenty of big hits and dropped catches, watched by a sizeable crowd including the Mayor and many of the club’s Vice-Presidents and supporters.

Coming up on October 13th we have our end of season dinner at Vauxhall Farm, Great Wenham, where multi-talented sports impressionist Kevin Connelly will be guest speaker, on an evening which also includes an auction and senior presentations. A fine closing weekend at Bowling Club The Hadleigh bowling club brought forward its closing to allow for an early start to remedial work on the green. On Saturday 18 August we held the traditional Ladies v Gents drive in blazing sunshine and the Ladies came out winners overall. On the same afternoon the EBA Mixed Triples team played in the Monday Mixed Leagues Cup semi final against Ipswich and District B.C. at Roundwood which they won and now play in the Final at Debenham B.C. on Sunday 26 August, our congratulations to them. On Sunday 19 August we held our club finals day once again in scorching hot conditions even for the early starters at 10.00 am. The crowd gradually built up as the day progressed and enjoyed keenly fought matches. Recipe for Success

What with the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics we have had a lot to celebrate this year. But now what? Well, I for one am grateful to Jane in The Idler for notifying me of the up and coming challenge for September where, for the 30 days (ie the whole month) we are encouraged to source our food from within 30 miles of where we live. So enjoy this celebration of local food – remember to Buy And Source It Locally (BASIL) keep calm and pretend it’s still summer!

Welsh Cakes Ingredients: 450 g (8oz) self-raising flour, 225 g (4oz) butter 170 g (6oz) sugar, 75 g (3oz) sultanas or currants, 2 eggs Pinch salt, milk to mix (if needed) Method: Rub the butter into the flour to make breadcrumb texture. Add sugar, dried fruit, eggs and mix to create a stiff dough. Add milk if mixture is too dry. Roll out dough and cut into small rounds. Griddle on a low heat in a lightly greased pan until golden on both sides. Enjoy warm with oodles of cream – preferably clotted!

The 5 mile multi-terrain course starts in the middle of the village and winds its way through the streets, past the pub where the locals give you a cheer and a brief waft of cigarette smoke to remind you of a former life before heading out across some pot-holed roads and abandoned industrial units.

The next mile or so is spent eyeing the ground as runners slip around the muddy trail before the route turns back on itself and you head into Brantham again through the housing areas. The marshals seem to have vanished at this point and one runner at the front heads off the wrong way up a cul-de-sac.

The course ends back on the playing fields in front of the roaring crowds. Star of the evening for the Hares was Katrina Rigby who managed a PB on a tough course, after the event she gave us an insight into her race, she bent forward and exhaled ‘Ooooo that !!??!!? hill’. Not far behind was her friend Alex who was racing for the first time. She hardly looked out of breath so she will go faster with more races or maybe she didn’t try hard enough? But I wasn’t going to suggest this to the former Army girl. Is there any way back for Steve Hunt against his son? Not on tonight’s evidence as ever improving Stuart showed Dad how it’s done. Ladies' favorite, Hares heart-throb Carlos Catalan bounced back after his shocking display at the Ekiden relay where he let himself, the club and Spain down. Oddly enough there were lots of other runners from a Spanish running club there and at registration Carlos had to insist ‘I am Hadleigh Hare’ (in a Spanish accent).

Former US College 800m track star Mark Russell continues his rapid improvement. 20 years ago he would have won this race with 5 minutes to spare so it will be interesting to see what he can achieve in the future now he’s in the V40 category. John Scaife desperately clung on for 5th place, largely helped by an insane downhill sprint that could easily have ended in tears. With the skies clearing and medals round necks we trudged back to the car park recalling tales of the run and realising why it is we make the effort after all.

On Saturday 10th August the “1881 Challenge Match” between Hadleigh Tennis club and Bildeston Tennis Club look place. The gentlemen’s doubles match, which is the foundation of this event, commemorates Hadleigh Tennis Club’s oldest recorded match, having first been played in June 1881. Last year, 130 years after the original match, the two clubs decided to re-establish the match and add to it a ladies doubles match, playing for a new challenge cup and plate. At this inaugural replay in 2011, the Hadleigh teams won both the cup and the plate.

This year however, after a well fought match, Martin Rodgers and Richard Breeze of Bildeston won the gentlemen’s doubles 6:2, 6:4 which means that Bildeston will now hold the “Challenge Cup” until the next meeting in 2013.

The ladies’ faired better and were able to ensure that Hadleigh retained the “plate”, with Sandy Claireaux and Deborah Young winning 6:1, 6:2. 2012 also saw a mixed doubles match added to the event, and here again, the Hadleigh team of Jan Richards and Ben Daniels were the winners. On this occasion, the matches and post-match celebrations were excellently hosted by Bildeston and unusually for this summer season the event took place on a lovely sunny afternoon. Many thanks to the players, organisers and spectators, who made the 131st year of the Hadleigh/Bildeston Challenge match so enjoyable.

Hadleigh Tennis club plays (from March to October), on three sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. 2012 annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students.

In the early eighties, after Bob Carr initially started Hadleigh Hares Running Club, Colin Ablitt and Steve Wilkinson got together with their children, Richard, James and Neil and Hadleigh Hares Juniors was born.

Over a period of time more and more children got involved from the school, up to a stage where we were coaching about 25 youngsters on Friday sessions. This was mainly geared to speed work and middle distance. We used to do a meeting in Ipswich called Shri Chimnoy at Chantry Park and it was wonderful to see the red and white colours showing up in such good numbers. By this time we had parents approaching us to join our club. These people came from Colchester, Dedham, Ipswich and Stowmarket.

The Friday sessions were run

by Steve, ably assisted by a great character called Neville Lay who worked tirelessly with us throughout the ten years. We travelled miles to find races such as: Kings Lynn, Hyde Park, Great Baddow, Halstead, Gt. Yarmouth and Beccles, as well as all the local races. The attendance was a great credit as we relied on parents to support the events. We trained up at the High School long before the Leisure Centre was built, after consultation with the Headmaster at the time. This was very much appreciated and it went a long way to help the children, many of whom were students at the school.

A lot of thanks should go to Tony Howe in supporting our club and what we were trying to achieve. We are very proud to have four of our kids who went on to be County Champions in their age groups. One went on to AAA semi-finals at Bedford - later in their teenage years.

There was a real buzz around Hadleigh Juniors at the time because of those achievements. We are also very proud of later successes (even in different parts of the world for some), acknowledging the hard work and effort of all those who were involved in the scheme at the time. One particular meeting, we recall, at Colchester Harriers for an event involving Colchester, Halstead, Witham, Harwich and Hadleigh. We competed at all track distances. We won the overall event which underlined our strength and determination as a small town junior running club.

It’s great to see the Hadleigh Hares Juniors thriving again. We wish Clive Pinnion and his team every success for the future.

Hadleigh United Under 13’s We are now about to start our 2nd season at 11-a-side and after the learnings of last season and finishing a very respectable 4th we are upping the work rate with weekly fitness sessions. The boys are putting in a huge amount of work and the benefits are already seen. Big respect to the boys to turn up at these every week through the summer. A big congratulations to the whole team for also picking up Hadleigh High School Team of the year as their school football team reached two cup finals. The boys received this award for their commitment, attitude and desire both on and off the pitch. Very commendable at their age.

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd This year’s match for the Hadleigh Charity Cup saw Leiston come to the Millfield in a contest in aid of Diabetes UK. Our opponents play two levels higher than Hadleigh and it showed as we were beaten by four goals to nil. Leiston scored twice early on, one of them from the penalty spot, and they continue to dominate in the second half with two more goals. We only managed one decent shot on target in the whole game and that was saved by the keeper. The F.A. Cup saw us away at Ipswich Wanderers and a splendid performance saw Hadleigh win by three goals to nil with all goals coming in the first half. Ollie Canfer headed the first goal while Marcus Josiah marked his debut with a superb shot for the second goal.

Canfer completed the scoring late in the first half to put Hadleigh into the next round where we travel to Harlow. That match will have taken place by the time these notes are read.

League matches for the first team began with defeats in our first two games but we broke our duck with a two goal success against Ely City at the Millfield. The Reserves played several friendlies with fine wins against Coplestonians, Westerfield and Needham Academy.

Hadleigh United Fixtures First team fixtures in September for Hadleigh United begin with a trip to Wisbech on Saturday 8th. A Vase match at Stanway or Debenham follows on Saturday 15th before Thetford come to Hadleigh for an interesting match on Saturday 22nd. A short trip to Felixstowe is next on the list on Tuesday 25th while the month ends at Wivenhoe on Saturday 29th.

The Reserves start the month with a cup match at home to Wickham Market on Saturday 1st. The following Saturday 8th Newmarket Town travel to the Millfield before a home match against Whitton takes place on Saturday 15th. Wednesday 26th sees a trip to Ipswich Wanderers while Wivenhoe pay a visit to Hadleigh on Saturday 29th to end a busy month.

Our Thurlow Nunn youth team entertain Stanway at the Millfield on Thursday 6th. Then Thursday 13th Whitton pay us a visit before Clacton are in town on Thursday 27th.
