FIT FOR A QUEEN! February 6th marked the sixtieth anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne and St Mary’s Church was packed at a special service to celebrate the event. The service was the brainchild of the Mayor, Penny Cook, and she believed that Hadleigh was the only community in the county formally to mark the event on the day. Civic dignitaries from across the county and personnel from Wattisham Flying Station joined members of Hadleigh Town Council, parish clergy, representatives from organisations in the town and others. Also taking part were children from St Mary’s and Hadleigh Community primary schools. Unfortunately, the bad weather prevented Beaumont pupils from taking part. “It made me very proud that the town was able to show its loyalty to the Queen and demonstrates the affection in which she is held,” said Penny. “I am very grateful to the Dean, church officials and Town Council staff for their hard work to make the celebration possible,” she added. Other celebrations are planned for the bank holiday jubilee weekend including lunch in the street and a 50s dance. Further details will be available later. Hadleigh Town Council has provided a Book Of Celebration for residents and visitors to the town to write messages of congratulations to the Queen. Sheets are available at the Town Council Offices, the Library and in St. Mary’s Church. The completed book will be sent to Buckingham Palace in July.

Talitha Koum is a Christian Therapeutic Community based on a farm just north of Ipswich, whose aim is to help vulnerable women who are recovering from drug and alcohol addictions.

Hadleigh Folk and Acoustic Music Nights First of all we must draw your attention to a mistake in last month's column. The date for the summer barn dance with the Hosepipe Band at the Ansell Centre is Friday June 1st (not June 14th). Also, as previously announced, correctly this time, March 2nd is an evening with Issy and David Emeney, who sing traditional and self-penned songs and tunes with melodeon, concertina, guitar and mandola.

Following that, our next date will be Friday 13th - we are not superstitious - slightly later than usual to avoid Good Friday. The band for this event is Bof!, who specialise in traditional French music. This does not mean they wear berets and and have onions round their neck, but play traditional instruments including hurdy gurdy, bagpipes and diatonic accordion, and sing in French! We hope that some dancers will come to give the flavour of a French 'bal'. Later on in April, we are hoping to start French dance classes where you can learn such classics as the 'Bourée', the 'Schottische', the 'Mazurka and the 'An dro'. Support for the evening will be provided by the duo Dragonfruit consisting of Clare Woodcock and Ian Heywood, performing material from pure folk to pure pop and all stations in between, accompanied by guitar and violin. Suffolk Firm Enters the Dragons’ Den The location for Hadleigh based Jim Lawrence Ironworks’ latest photography shoot was the infamous Dragons’ Den studio – ‘The Depository’. The Depository in Stamford Hill, London is a 19th century warehouse, with 8000 square feet of vaulted ceilings, original windows and brick walls spread over 3 floors. The Dragons’ Den is filmed on the first floor. Sheena Lawrence commented “Walking up that iconic staircase for the first time was quite exciting – I was glad I didn’t have to pitch to a roomful of Dragons at the top though!”

Instead of Dragons the team from Jim Lawrence were met by an eclectic mix of props including giant letters, vintage toys and a ten foot high star!

Other celebrities and businesses to use this location include Pixie Lott, Amy Winehouse and fashion house Chanel. Who knows which of the Dragons drives the vintage pedal car between takes…

The star of the Depository on this particular day was a humble pendant light. Jim Lawrence’s beautiful new Ava Pendant was such a hit with the ad agency team that it never made it home to Suffolk.

Sheena spoke for everyone at Jim Lawrence when she said that it was a great day, but the best part was returning to beautiful Suffolk at the end!

We were overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who packed St Mary’s Church for the funeral on February 14th, proof of how popular they were, and loved by all that knew them. Volunteers Wanted at Little Hall in Lavenham Little Hall Museum is a medieval wool merchant’s house, garden and collection open to the public, owned by the Suffolk Building Preservation Trust and run entirely by volunteers. It was beautifully restored in the 1920s/1930s by the Gayer-Anderson brothers who filled the house with artefacts collected during their travels. The work is interesting and can include welcoming visitors, taking entry fees and guiding, during April to October on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and Monday mornings. The time commitment is flexible. No previous experience is needed and training will be given.

Hadleigh and District Footpath Volunteers 2012 Walks Welcome to the 13th season of our accompanied walks in Hadleigh and the surrounding districts. Greetings from David W., Hugh, and David A. We hope that you will be pleased with our plans for the seasons walks, which will contain something to appeal to the most discerning of walkers.

Our first walk this season will be on Saturday 10th March. It will be the traditional early season walk to Boxford. The walk will be along well used paths and bridleways, and is suitable for all walkers, including children and dogs. We will depart from St. Marys School at 10am and will walk through Tinkers Lane, Layham Road Sports Ground, Hill Farm, Bullocky Fen, Rands Farms, Polstead Heath, Bower House Tye, and on to Boxford.

We will return to Hadleigh by bus arriving back at 1.30pm.

The dates for the rest of the seasons walks are as follows:April 14th, May 19th, June 15th, 16th, 17th, July 14th, August 18th, September 15th, October 13th and November 10th. Also on Saturday May 5th we will walk to Broughs Meadow for the dawn chorus.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard and an Ice Cream Sundae It is years and years since I went to the cinema. In fact, the last film that I saw there was “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”. That was made on location upon the Greek isle of Kefalonia. We used to Summer at a villa on the neighbouring island of Ithaca. At the time it was a delight; unspoilt with crystal blue waters with a breeze and a swell in the afternoon. All of that is a thing of the past. I have always been a fan of Margaret Thatcher. She was in power during my formative years in which time I did much for the Conservative Party.

I wanted to see the new film “The Iron Lady” and so took a trip to the cinema in Ipswich accompanied by a small entourage. How things have changed. I was politely told that there was no box and that I had to sit with everyone else. There was no usherette with a torch and no interval; no ice cream. All a sign of these rather perfunctory times. Hence the picture shows me with an ice cream sundae at the Harvester restaurant nearby the cinema - a functional no frills establishment but lovely ices. I watched the feature with great sadness as it looked back at Margaret Thatcher’s life from her current frail state. The opening scene was of Margaret Thatcher buying a pint of milk from a corner shop and fumbling in her purse for the 45 pence that it cost.

“The Iron Lady” is a salutary tale that even the best and strongest of us can find ourselves in circumstances where it is very difficult to manage our own affairs. You, my readers know that one really should have in place a Lasting Power of Attorney. We can deal with that now rather long winded process on your behalf. Make an appointment straight away. The Lasting Power of Attorney has to be registered at the Office of the Public Guardian which is taking eight weeks or so.

On the subject of cinemas, I do enjoy the odd visit to the Ipswich Light Organ Music Society at the Castle Hill United Reform Church on a Sunday afternoon. There have been some really great concerts. Nigel Ogden from Radio 2 The Organist Entertains and Robert Wolfe the resident organist at the Thursford Collection have given brilliant foot tapping performances. When my chauffeur Frank takes me out in the motor car I do receive salutes of all types from those outside and for which I am very much appreciative. As tea cups chinked from the trolley in the drawing room on Sunday afternoon, the sun was still setting at a little before 6. Those longer evenings are only just around the corner.

Peter Robert Lee was born in Marylebone, London on 4 March 1929. His parents met at the military hospital on Marylebone Road and had three sons and a daughter. From a young age Peter was keen to join the army. He had an uncle who died in the battle of Gallipoli during World War I, and Peter’s Grandfather Francis Matthews fought in the Sudan with the 21st Lancers under Lord Kitchener.

In September 1946 Peter enlisted in the General Service Corps for which his mother signed the necessary papers as he was under 18 years of age. His early army fitness training began at Barton Stacey, Hampshire.

On 5 December 1946 Peter was transferred to the King’s Royal Rifle Corps but a year later responded to a recruiting drive to serve with the Corps of Royal Military Police. Peter rose quickly up the noncommissioned ranks to Warrant Officer. He served mainly in the UK, but was also posted to North West Europe and to Germany where he met his first wife, Edith. Later their son Clinton was born in London. Peter’s military career also took him to Kenya where he was involved in the conflict against the Mau Mau. A lasting reminder of this time was a shrapnel blast in the knee. Peter was commissioned into the Special Investigation Branch of the RMP in August 1965 as Captain, and was posted to Osnabruck. Peter also served in Jamaica, Singapore and Malaysia where he was highly valued as mediator between the British Army and the local people whose trust he won by his sense of fairness.

In April 1972 Captain Peter Lee was honoured with Membership of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to the British Army. In 1973 he was appointed Deputy Assistant Provost Marshall Northern Command SIB UK in the rank of Major.

During his time in York, Peter, now a widower, met and later married Jill in September 1974.

Peter’s last task was as DAPM Antwerp with the British Army of the Rhine in April 1975. He played a key role facilitating and policing the complex movements of supplies from Antwerp to Roermond using the RMP TA and assisted by the Belgian Gendarmerie.

On retirement from the RMP in December 1976 Peter joined Mobil Oil as Security Manager at Coryton Oil Refinery.

There was then a serious IRA terrorism threat, and consequent heavy investment in refinery security. Peter’s experience of Royal Protection Duty was invaluable during the Queen Mother’s visit to the refinery in 1979. Peter and Jill moved in 1993 to Hadleigh where Peter became a diligent Secretary of the Royal British Legion. He was passionate about the Poppy Appeal, was a regular contributor to the Hadleigh Community News, and wrote a series of articles describing the strategy of battles on their anniversaries. He became Chairman of the Hadleigh Battle of Britain Association and was a founder member of Hadleigh Probus. Peter had been ill for some years before becoming housebound.

Nevertheless, by a superhuman effort he managed to attend the Hadleigh Armistice Day ceremony in 2011. He died on 2 January 2012 and his military funeral was held at St. Mary’s Parish Church, Hadleigh on 27 January 2012.

The RMP motto is Exemplo ducemus; by example, we lead – and Peter did.

A chip off the Old Block!

Laura Wood is the 7th generation of stonemasons working for “Wood for Stone”. Laura completed her apprenticeship in 2011 and has demonstrated a natural talent for working with stone. With an inherited gift for creative carving she has followed closely in the footsteps of her stonemason father Andrew. Stonemasonry being heavy and hard work most people would probably assume it to be a solely male domain, that concept has clearly been shattered.

One of Laura’s first projects was a large memorial in Langham for the USAF to commemorate American servicemen & women.

Some newly qualified stonemasons might have been intimidated by such a project but not Laura. Not only did she create a masterpiece but also finished it on time and to the complete satisfaction and delight of the American military attaché in London who presided over the unveiling of the memorial. Laura is now a director of the company but at every opportunity she will get down to that “hands on work” she finds so creative and rewarding. Whilst “Wood for Stone” produce a full range of stonework projects Laura is now established as the Headstone & Memorial focal point and ensures that each project passes her discerning quality assurance standards. In this age of automation it is a comfort to know that traditional skills and handcrafts are still around and being practiced and promoted by old established companies. Only too often we accept lower quality and standards in favour of imported and massproduced work. If it were not for time-honoured companies like “Wood for Stone” this might be the only alternative. Let’s hope that we will always find a place for our traditional craftsmen and their skills. At least Laura is doing her part to keep that British expertise alive!

Hadleigh based Men’s Salon ‘James Daniel’ is set to host a charity day to raise funds in memory of local boy Josh Rix, a childhood friend of the salons owner – James Hellyer. Josh had rushed to fly out to Australia after his mother, Judy, suffered a stroke.

Tragically Judy passed away just hours after Josh and his brother reached Australia. The day after his mother was cremated; Josh suffered a seizure and died on the 12th January. James Daniel will donate a full days takings from all the services offered at the salon, including haircuts and massages, to the fund set up to contribute towards the costs associated with flying Josh’s body home. Owner, James Hellyer comments: “this situation is truly heart breaking and I can’t even begin to imagine what the Rix family have been through in these past few weeks. The story has shocked the community and I feel it’s important to do something to show our support. Josh and I played sport together as kids and he was a much loved local lad. He will be very sadly missed. The charity day is being held on the 16th March from 8am – 9pm at the James Daniel salon, and everyone is invited to come in and show their support for the Rix family.

Foster Carers needed to help meet growing need There are over 65,000 children who are “looked after� in the UK - children who are not able to live at home with their families and live either with other relatives or in foster care. This number has been growing steadily despite efforts by local authorities to help keep families together and following the “Baby Peter� case, the numbers of younger children have seen a particular increase. Alongside this is an on-going national shortage of foster carers who can offer children an alternative stable home that can help them come to terms with their situation and make the best use of their future potential. It is important that fostering organisations recruit a range of people to foster, so children can have more of a chance to stay closer to their families, as well as keeping siblings together or addressing particular needs children may have. Local Students Showcase Suffolk Talent Hadleigh Musicians Nic Keeble and Jake Redmon, along with Oscar Charlton from Felixstowe are organising an evening of some of Suffolk best musical and artistic talent. There will be music from 3 of Suffolk’s finest up and coming artists; Adam Moss, a 17 year old quirky acoustic pop singer/song writer whom is currently in the process of recording album number two. He also recently supported Matt Cardle on his UK tour (Find his debut album ‘Hold On’ on itunes). Joe Gibbings, a 17 year old acoustic/alternative/punk musician whom has just recorded his debut ep ‘Unconcious’ and is planning a music video for his first single ‘Pick Me Up.’ Ade Parkinson, a 20 year old alternative artist, born and bred in Hadleigh. He has released an ep under the name of ‘Sonar Pink’ which is available for download on mediafire.com.

During the evening there will also be an art exhibition upstairs in the cafe showcasing some of the work of students from Suffolk New College. The artists will be available throughout the evening to chat about their pieces and chosen course.

Delegates will be able to hear about the recycling and general waste services on offer to them and also hear of ways in which they can make the most out of their waste stream.

Greener Hadleigh THE HADLEIGH SPRING CLEAN On Sunday the 25th March a litter pick is planned - the Hadleigh Spring Clean - with the Footpath Volunteers. If you are interested in being involved, look for posters nearer the time; contact us through The Idler Bookshop, 37 High Street, Hadleigh, or Jane@theidler.plus.com, or meet up on the day at the Magdalen Road car park at 10am. While the streets in Hadleigh are mainly free of litter there are some areas of grass and bushes where litter accumulates. If you know of an area that needs clearing please contact Jane, but it depends on the number of volunteers on the day. We have mentioned the need to save water several times, but at the time of writing news reports suggest that unless we have long periods of rain soon there will be water shortages/drought this summer of course it could also mean that we have a very wet summer that we all moan about - and that water prices are set to rise. As well as cutting down on water consumption and, at the risk of being boring, increasing water butt numbers, do also think of looking for drought tolerant plants if you are planning your garden. Ask for more information when buying plants; look for books to borrow from the library or check the RHS website.

While talking about plants, why not include some wildflowers or ones that are suitable for pollinators, such a bees. Many of our food crops rely on being pollinated by insects and it is becoming a real problem for commercial growers. You also need them in your garden if you have fruiting trees or shrubs, including apples, plums and raspberries, or vegetables such as runner and broad beans, and the pumpkin/marrow families.

The RHS is starting a scheme to label suitable plants, such as primula, marguerite and single flower marigold and other daisy type flowers. If you are interested in sustainable building and conservation, you may like to attend this seminar - Natural Building - the Traditional Approach, on Saturday 24th March, 10.00-4.00. It will include talks, demonstrations and discussions, exploring how you can source materials close to home and converting them yourself into useable building materials. Sales of this new history magazine for Bildeston has been most encouraging with copies flying off the shelf at Bank House Stores. I would like to thank proprietor Richard O’Sullivan for his support and Bildeston Parish Council, which has kindly conferred a start-up grant.

Out now, Issue 2 includes the story of John Motte ‘local boy made good’ by guest contributor Dr. Nick Amor and a survey of Bildeston street names over the centuries.

The series continue with Bildeston at the times of Domesday Book in ‘Lords of the Manor’ and a biography of rear Admiral James Cockburn in ‘Links with the Sea’.

Bundles of title deeds have been loaned to me so that the series ‘Hidden Histories’ can continue and other historical documents relating to the village have also been made available. For example, income tax returns for 1871 show that for their work at Cosford Union Workhouse at Semer, Revd. Joseph Gedge (rector of Bildeston) received £63 as chaplain and the salary of Robert Growse (surgeon of Bildeston) was £110 in his capacity as medical officer.

I would like you to make contributions to the magazine; these can be personal reminiscences or original research and, of course, letters are always welcome. I hope that you enjoy reading Bildeston History Quarterly as much as I enjoyed putting the magazine together.

Hadleigh Community Playgroup Hadleigh Community Playgroup is now in the second half term of 2012, and the children have all settled in, and enjoying their time at the playgroup.

Breakfast Club After requests from parents we are now offering a breakfast club. This will run from 8 till 8:50. Without breakfast it will cost £2.50 with breakfast £3. Anyone can send their child to breakfast club as long as their child are already in the day that they are at playgroup and also must give a minimum 24hrs notice.

Little Hands.... Parents and toddler group I am also pleased to report our Parent and Toddler group ‘Little Hands’ has continued to grow. The Parents and Toddler group is for children of 1 to 2 years old, which takes place on a Friday afternoon. When the toddlers are playing the parents can enjoy a much earned cuppa, if you wish to come along for the first time please ring before coming to check places are available.

Free Childcare Hadleigh community playgroup is now accepting funding for 2 year olds. This can entitle you up to 15 hours a week free childcare.

Please note the 2 year old funding is not available to everyone. If you have any older children we are able to accept new children for the summer term who will be entitled to 3 year old funding. This gives you 15 hours a week free childcare, but your child birthday must land before 31st March 2012 to receive it. As I write this, I am looking out over a blanket of pure snow. So for those wanting a spring recipe, you may have to wait another month. In honour of Mothering Sunday, I am opting for a winter warmer and dedicating this recipe to my mother.

So simple. The recipe, that is!

Mum’s Egg and Beany Pie (serves 4)

by Sarah Thompson Ingredients, 1 kilo potatoes for mashing (Co-ops Maris Pipers fit the bill nicely) 2 standard tins baked beans, 4 large eggs, 1 medium onion (optional), Large portion of butter Method Preheat the oven at 220°c Peel and boil the potatoes for about 30 minutes.

When they are soft enough, add the butter and mash to a creamy consistency.

Hard boil the eggs for about 12 minutes.

Let the eggs cool down and then slice them.

Put the beans into a large casserole or glass dish.

Add the sliced egg.

Slice then fry the onion and stir into the mixture.

Spoon the mashed potato on top and smooth down with a fork to seal in the ingredients.

Pop the dish into the oven for about 30 minutes.

Hey presto. A quick but hugely satisfying dish.

On the first day when the temperature had begun to rise after the snowy chill there was a large, enthusiastic audience for the U3A February meeting in the Ansell Room. The speaker, Carl Powell, gave a very interesting talk on the work of the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) and in particular their Garden Birdwatch Scheme. They have thousands of ordinary people all over the country keeping a weekly count of the birds seen in their gardens. The results are collated by BTO and used by other organisations such as RSPB to monitor the number and variety of birds using our gardens throughout the year.

On 24 January a number of U3A members went to the Alfie Boe concert at the Regent. We were treated to a surprisingly wide range of musical entertainment, from Elgar to Lennon/McCartney, in addition to everyone's favourite show-stopping songs.

Next Month’s talk on 12 March will be Henry’s Trials, the story of the rise and fall of Wandsworth Prison’s first chaplain. The Entertainments Committee distributed their proposed programme for outings during the coming months. Many members should have received it by e-mail but it will be reproduced in the March Newsletter. Please let a member of the committee know which trips you are interested in joining in order to help finalise the arrangements.

Brrrrr! Even in my room it’s felt cold but, during the recent snow, looking out through the window it looks so temptingly inviting as I peer across the Brett Valley with it’s covering of deep snow and bright sun shine: so bright and fresh! Well, that is, until Charley and Rupert came into view, looking at me over the fence: with head and legs poking from under their warm coats, white beards and every breath visible: now I’m not so sure. I wasn’t sure whether they were looking at me in envy, or perhaps sad that I couldn’t be out with them: you never know with those two when they’re in the mind for mischief. Unfortunately, because of the snow our regular days have been disrupted which I know has disappointed many Riders. However, in true RDA fashion, two of our maintenance Helpers soon got to us and cleared the road so that Lyn and the Volunteers who look after us could easily get to the Centre to feed and water the Herd.

Obviously, with the snow, I had time on my hoofs and decided to surf the Web and read the Centre’s latest Year Book (Copies are available from the Centre). Looking on The Shelley Centre Website I noticed that the Events Calendar for 2012 is now there and one or two interesting items caught my eye, so to speak. On 17th March there is an Antiques Sale at Stoke

by Nayland Village Hall between 10 and 3 and if you enjoy the theatre, between 26th and 28th April, at the John Mills Theatre, Ipswich, Mega Brill Productions are staging ‘Two Plays’ for all to enjoy, so don’t forget to mark these events on your Calendar: both will raise funds for the Centre.

As for our new Year Book, I’ve taken the liberty of extracting from it a specific case history of one of my Riders to give an example of how the Shelley “Family” is able to help mature Riders (That’s between my ear wigging and gazing through the window across ‘My’ valley).

Michelle has Cerebral Palsy, her legs being more affected than her arms.

She can walk a limited distance with walking sticks but, spends most of the time in a wheelchair. As a child and young adult she was able to ride a real horse but, can no longer do so and relies on me to help her: she did start with BABS, my companion mechanical horse. However, after six months, Michelle’s balance and sitting symmetry had improved so much that she was able to progress to riding me, being a greater challenge for her because I am more complex in that I emulate a real horse in all ways.

Now, when riding me, not only can she walk and canter but, she can also control the reins to turn my head and pull for “Whoa”. It’s wonderful that with my being at Shelley, I am able to help Michelle with her mobility and every-day activities. The snow has gone, days are getting longer & spring is just around the corner. Weeds away - the easy way!

As temperatures in recent days have fallen to as low as -10c, no one has felt this more than the homeless population in Ipswich. A local charity set up to provide hot meals for the homeless and vulnerable in Ipswich, sent out a plea for help, as it was being inundated with people requiring their assistance. This cry for help was heard by communityfocused Ipswich business, The Hearing Care Centre. The Community Resource Centre, located on Blackhorse Lane, in Ipswich, urgently required and still do require, tinned and dried food goods, blankets, jumpers and anything else to provide temporary relief from the harsh winter conditions. Hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, based just a 2 minute walk from the Resource Centre, on High Street, heard about the charity’s need and rallied round to get together what they could. All members of the team rummaged through their food stores and clothes cupboards at home and came up with boxes full of goods, which have been donated to the charity.

Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, Karen Finch, said: “I heard about the Resource Centre’s need through the Ipswich East Rotary Club that I belong to. It must be awful to have to live out on the street at any time, let alone in these freezing conditions. The Community Resource Centre do a fantastic job in helping these people, and I am glad that my team could help in some way” Donations can still be made to the Community Resource Centre at 1 Black Horse Lane, Ipswich, Monday-Friday, between 10am-3pm

The Social Wasps Social wasps generally, are a very large group of insects and they all have a similar lifestyle. Although it is said of the largest variety in the UK (The Hornet - Vespa crabro) “one to kill a man – two to kill a horse” I’m not sure whether this is true unless you’re allergic to their venom. To anyone in this group a single sting can prove life-threatening. All these insects live in large colonies (thus the name) and we assume they are simply waiting to attack us; most however will leave us alone unless we interfere with them, or their nests Only the young fertile females (queens) survive the winter - your shed or loft will do nicely. She’ll come out of hibernation around May-time and using a mixture of chewed wood-fibre and saliva starts work on a nest resembling an oddly shaped Golf-ball. This will contain only a dozen or so egg-cells into which she will lay individual eggs; and then wait for them to hatch.

There is no need for a male at this stage because she was fertilised in the autumn and has kept the sperm alive overwinter in her abdomen.

Once the eggs have hatched she feeds the hatchlings (larvae) on meat for few days before they seal themselves into their cells to pupate (change from grubs into adults in a process known as metamorphosis), emerging a short time later as adults wasps. There’s no competition for food between these two life-stages because they rely on different sources. The developing grubs are fed on high protein meat – normally other insects which the workers have killed and air-lifted to the nest, and the adults feed on liquid, sugary, high-energy foods such as over-ripe fruit and nectar (all that flying about is hard work) The queen can decide what sex her brood is to be and whether or not they are fertile; and for most of the year - because she doesn’t want any competition - they will all be barren females. As soon as the queen has generated sufficient offspring to maintain the colony she ceases work and simply becomes the egg supplier. The nest continues to be enlarged and can house large numbers of insects. The largest one found in the UK recently was around 2 cubic metres and housed many thousands of insects. Fortunately that’s exceptional - most only get to the size of a football.

Egg production goes on for most of the summer with all the new-born being sterile females (workers) until - in the early autumn - the process changes. The old queen seems to realise that her end is nigh and to perpetuate the species she must change her production strategy. Special larger egg-cells are constructed and she lays eggs that will become fertile males (drones) and females (new queens). Once out of the nest the Drones will seek out and mate with the new “Queens” and then die, leaving only the young “Queens” to survive through winter to start again next year. By the late autumn the colony is exhausted and the early frosts destroy the whole population.

The most dangerous ones in the UK are commonly known as “Euro or German Wasps” (Vespa Germanica). They’re a little larger than the Common Wasp (Vespa vulgaris) and often build nests in bushes. (Photo 2) This is made of the same chewed wood/saliva mixture as all the others, and if you ever come across one you must leave it alone! The owners take a very dim view of interference and will respond with a mass attack on any thing they don’t recognise – that’s you, your dog and anyone else close by. The difficulty is that once stung, you are marked with a biological chemical (a pheromone) which will not only provoke all the others into attacking, but gives them a means of following you about! You’ll need to be fleet afoot to escape unscathed.

News from St Mary’s Primary School The spring term is whizzing by at St Mary’s School – time flies when you’re having fun!

We were delighted to be involved in the church service to celebrate the Queen’s accession to the throne. It was a lovely event and the children were impressed to see so many mayors and important people! The children read out a selection of prayers and sang one of their favourite songs.

The children visit St Mary’s Church regularly to participate in the Friday ‘café’ service.

Recently, it was the turn of Beech Class. They joined members of the public for prayers, singing and to experience Holy Communion.

Thanks to all the adults who took part and helped the children to enjoy the experience.

Everybody had a great time at this term’s disco! Our DJ, Marcel, kept the children entertained with games, dancing the conga and doing the limbo. There were some great dance moves on show! We are very grateful to the parent support group for all the time and energy they put into organising these fun events.

Thank you to all the visitors who have joined us for Worship this month. Ian Copeman, Father Brett, Pastor Greg and Pastor Chris have helped the children to learn about the theme ‘Peace’, using Bible stories and examples from history. The children have reflected on the messages from the stories and how they can lead bring peace into their everyday lives. We were particularly pleased to welcome Pastor Chris to the school as it was his first visit to lead Worship for us.

We welcomed lots of parents and grandparents to our celebration assembly recently – it was a great turn out as usual! The children were rewarded for good behaviour and lots of fantastic work.

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Layham Parish Council The main matters dealt with during the Parish Council meeting of Wednesday 25 January 2012 were: • A new Parish Plan exercise is to be undertaken in the early summer – it will be conducted by members of staff from Suffolk ACRE at a cost of around £600; • Application is to be made to the SCC Locality Fund to cover the cost of the Parish Plan; • Further research is to be done into the implications of owning and maintaining a defibrillator in one of the now unused telephone boxes; • Any decisions about what to do with the telephone boxes will be left until after the Parish Plan consultation; • It was agreed to purchase a fourth grit bin to be placed at the slope out of Old Orchard; • Three councillors, assisted by Richard Groom removed for safe keeping the tiles that were taken off the roof of the Marquis of Cornwallis; • Planning. The application for an extension on Turner’s Cottage, Stoke Road, has been passed by Babergh DC; • It was agreed to ask Babergh DC Planning Department to check the original agreement for the extension of garden to 77 Brett Green. The land is outside the village envelope and thus is classified as countryside.

Councillors felt this may prohibit the erection of a building as requested by the owner; • The attention of villagers (through ‘Letter from Layham’) will be drawn to the advantages of community oil buying syndicates; • The Parish Council is to set up a Layham Community Email system enabling information to be sent quickly to all subscribers – details will be published in ‘Letter from Layham’ and free enrolment will be via the Layham Website; • The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Wednesday 25 April at 7.30 in the Village Hall. An exhibition from the Layham Archive will be a feature of the evening; • Householders are to be encouraged to respond to the campaign for faster broadband in rural areas – again through ‘Letter from Layham’.

The next meeting of the Council will be on Wednesday 28th March in the Village Hall. The dates of meetings for the whole year are displayed on the main village notice boards.

Salted grit Green plastic grit bins will soon be in place on the steep incline on Rands Road, at the entrance to Old Orchard, at the top of Water Lane and beside the Recycling Site. This is in addition to those already sited at the junction of Stoke Road/Shelley Road and at the top of Mill Lane. They will be filled with salted grit which is intended for use at those locations and small shovels will be provided. Please don’t take the grit for use elsewhere. Thank you.

Layham Recycling Centre It is pleasing to be able to report £113 income in the short time since the Recycling Centre was built. Thank you for taking the trouble to take your recyclable materials to the site. The Parish Council has used that money to provide a grit bin to be placed beside the Brett Green entrance to the Playing Field as experience has shown that the cement pathway, whilst ridged, can get slippery in icy weather. The income from glass and fabrics is paid as a ‘reward’ for the community not sending these materials to waste and is known as ‘landfill credits’. Every load you take to the site will benefit our village by providing cash to be managed locally by the Parish Council. Please make the effort to use our own Recycling Centre rather than taking your glass and fabrics to locations outside the village. Thank you.

Keeping your eyes on the ground Walking regularly along a local footpath sharp eyes will detect manmade ‘bits and pieces’ turned up by the ploughing and harrowing of the soil to the side of the path. Over the last year one family has found ten small pieces of clay pipe stem along with a number of small pieces of broken glazed pottery and metalwork – such as nails and a buckle.

A bit of research throws up a likely explanation. The process of manuring involved spreading the contents of farm and cottage waste heaps which, along with animal waste, aided drainage and helped to fertilise the soil.

These waste heaps, often called ‘middens’, were the black bins of previous centuries and would have contained everything which no longer had a use.

Over hundreds of years these ‘bits and pieces’ have accumulated in the soil and make a walk more interesting when they are spotted.

Layham Playing Field There is quite a change on the playing field as three large trees have been felled and taken away. The trees had grown too large and have been overshadowing more important specimens. The upper branches have been taken to the Conservation Area where they will provide shelter for wildlife, and eventually will rot down and become inhabited by insects, which will provide food for birds. Those of you who use the field will notice that the hedges have had their biannual cut back. This is important work and is one of our regular costs. If the hedges get out of hand they cost more to manage in the long run.

We made some bird feeders using lard and bird seed which the children took home to hang in their gardens. It was felt that the evening which was causing most disturbance was when Babergh District Council paid for the pitch and allowed the young people to have a supervised ‘kick about’. As PC Matt Paisley is involved in this initiative it was felt that the matter be discussed at the Town Council Meeting which PC Paisley would be attending. Hadleigh Town Council would be happy to be a mediator 24

with the organisers, the High School and the resident should this felt to be beneficial in the future.

ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS The Clerk reported that Application No: B/11/01352 - Installation of a roof mounted solar PV array at the new Fire Station on Calais Street had been approved by Suffolk County Council.

Councillor Mrs Haylock raised concerns over the boarded up state of the back of White Lion Court. Councillor Matthews advised her that quotations are being obtained for the roof to be repaired which is the first part of the renovation work following the fire.

The Clerk requested dates for the first meeting of the working group to discuss LAIS1332 Neighbourhood Planning Regulations. Councillor Matthews will provide the Clerk with available dates.

MATTERS ARISING Matters Arising – Short Term Parking. The Mayor reported that she and the Town Clerk had met with the Mayor and Mayoress of Sudbury just before Christmas which went very well. Following this the Town Clerk and herself had met with the Sudbury Mayor and Town Clerk at the Sudbury Offices and have agreed that regular meetings will take place. Sudbury Town Council is pressing ahead with their plans to take over car parking. The Strategy Committee of Babergh District Council has voted against charging for short term car parking.

Policing The Mayor asked if a response had been received from the request made to obtain the number of objections raised against the double yellow lining of Church Street and was advised that to date none had been received. The Mayor asked Councillor Grutchfield, as Suffolk County Councillor, if he could make enquiries and obtain this information.

Mayor’s Communications Following Sudbury’s vote against having a DPPO in their town the Clerk was asked to contact Paul Little of Babergh District Council and ask him to expedite a DPPO for Hadleigh.

POLICING The Mayor welcomed Sergeant Colin Curtis as this was his first Council Meeting. He presented the Police Report for December and it was noted that 25 crimes had been recorded during the months. The offences comprised as follows: 6 thefts; 5 common assaults; 3 assault occasioning ABH; 3 minor wound; 1 assault on police officer; 1 message, letter e.mail etc. indecent, threat, false; 1 criminal damage; 1 racial/religiously aggravated, harassment/alarm//distress; 1 threat to kill; 1 burglary; 1 arson and 1 driving motor vehicle with excess alcohol. Of these crimes 12 had been detected.

Sergeant Curtis answered questions on knife crime and was asked to put residents’ minds at rest as this did not appear to be a problem in Hadleigh, the arson incident and a request to work with the Sat Nav companies to update their systems in relation to Hook Lane.

REPORT OF THE DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Councillor Grutchfield reported that the Scrutiny and Strategy Committees had voted against charging for short term parking, but there would be a 50p increase in the long term charge.

Councillors Mrs Munson, Mrs Grandon and B. Riley had all provided written reports. The Mayor asked the District Councillors if they could investigate and report back on the future of Hadleigh’s public toilets. This followed on from Babergh’s request in 2011 to ascertain if Hadleigh Town Council would take over the running of this facility. Some financial figures had been provided and although further requests have been made for additional information this had not been received. Councillor Grutchfield advised that he was sure that Hadleigh Town’s public toilets were not going to be closed and Mrs Grandon confirmed this.

REPORT OF THE COUNTY COUNCILLOR Councillor Grutchfield had provided a written report. He answered questions on the future of the town’s library service and advised that he will be having meetings in the near future on this subject and will report back; the collection of fines by the library service and changes to the County’s archive system. Councillor Mrs Byrne stated that

Hadleigh Town Council should be very proud of the Archive system held in the Town. The Clerk was asked to pass Suffolk County Council’s budget to all Councillors electronically and a hard copy kept in the office. Councillor Grutchfield advised that there should be a 0% increase by Suffolk County Council and a 3.1% - 3.5% increase by Suffolk Police.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor reported: i) A newspaper article on Katie Drouet who had won the Local Business Accelerator Competition in the Suffolk Free Press. Katie is 25 years of age, educated in Hadleigh Schools and runs her own photography business - Katie Drouet Photography. She will be taking the photographs at the Service of Celebration on the 6th February 2012 for Hadleigh Town Council. The Mayor and Councillors congratulated Miss Drouet on her win. ii) A letter received from the Sudbury Citizens Advice Bureau regarding Relief For Bankruptcy Fees. Councillors were asked if this should be considered under the Power of Well Being Grants. It was agreed that this would be an item on the next agenda and the Clerk would be asked to obtain additional information from the CAB as to how many Hadleigh residents may be involved and how much would be a reasonable amount to give. The Mayor reported that the Aldham Common Charity may be able to assist. iii) Temporary Road Closure – B1070 Lady Lane from the junction with A1071 to industrial estate access for carriageway improvements from 20th February 2012 to 18th May 2012. iv) The High Sheriffs Awards and asked if the two local recipients of the Babergh Community Achievement Award could be put forward for this award. This was agreed unanimously.

STANDING ORDER NO. 24 Councillor Lazenby asked for a letter to be sent to Babergh District Council to say that whilst we appreciate an integration of staff could they be reminded that the vote taken by the electorate was for Babergh District Council to remain a separate Council from Mid-Suffolk District Council.

This followed concerns raised to him by local residents and staff that the two councils appeared to be merging. This request was approved.

Councillor Mrs Munson asked if Hadleigh Town Council were aware of the Hadleigh & Boxford Medical Charity which is contactable via the Health Centre Manager and is available to assist residents with transport costs and medical equipment.

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £15,861.10 be approved for payment.

PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 17th December 2012 were noted.

BUDGET ESTIMATES 2012/2013 It was unanimously agreed that the Precept for 2012/2013 be set at £299,000 which represents a 1% increase on the 2011/2012 precept.

The following recommendations were all approved unanimously: a) Approve the ESTIMATES Year 2012/2013 showing revised net expenditure for 2011/2012 of £291,370 b) Estimates of expenditure and income for 2012/2013 resulting in net expenditure of £385,395 c) Endorse the proposals for the continuing use of Funds outlined in Sections 6, 7 and 8 d) Agree to a Precept for the year 2012/2013 of £299,000 – an increase of 1% on the 2011/2012 figure.

The Town Clerk was thanked for her work on the budget.

Home And Dry It was almost a year ago that Town Mayor, Penny Cook, noticed exHadleigh High School students returning from Suffolk One looking very cold and wet at the Holiday Inn bus stop on the A1071. Having got the Council’s backing, she was initially told that her request for a bus shelter at this stop was not possible. However, Councillors were told at a recent meeting that funds were now available and a shelter will be in place shortly.

Rotary Review CLUB EVENTS: A number of members and guests visited Waterfield House care home for a conducted tour.They were impressed with the facilities which included a few well appointed suites for rent. Occupants of these enjoyed an independent life with the bonus of being able to avail themselves of many of the additional services on offer if needed. The tour ended with cakes and coffee in the restaurant generously provided by the home.

SPEAKERS: 1 Roger Kennell, the Hadleigh Archivist, paid one of his regular visits to the Club talking this time about the Deanery Tower.It was built as a brick gatehouse by William Pykenham, completed in 1495, and probably intended to act as a status symbol of his position as Archdeacon of Ipswich and East Suffolk as much as an office when he was in Hadleigh. It is a complex construction of many different brick styles very similar to the gatehouse at Oxburgh Hall and there is a theory that the same brick mason was employed. In 1829 the old parsonage building was destroyed by fire and a new deanery house completed in 1833. In the early 20th century this was joined to the tower but in 1961 the building was deemed too grand by the Church authorities and two wings and gable ends were demolished. The tower is still used as an office and church meetings are held there.

2 Matthew Shinn, Deputy Head of the Beaumont School, spoke about the development of the school from its construction in 2003 to the present day. There are only 4 schools in this country with similar advanced construction. It is built of Canadian wood in modular units with both solar panels and a wind turbine to generate energy. This substantially reduces energy bills by generating a surplus for the National Grid. Maximum use is made of natural light and low energy artificial lighting. Acoustic ceilings and carpeted floors absorb sound cutting noise to a minimum. There is a sedum roof which retains rainwater discharging it slowly intostorage tanks where it is used to flush toilets. Walls are insulated with old newspapers.

It is not surprising to learn that through these innovations the school has won a number of prestigious awards for energy efficiency, water conservation etc. An added bonus ,of course, is that the children learn first hand of the benefits of being eco friendly.The school now caters for 140 pupils aged 3 to 11 with a high percentage being from Service families resulting in about a 30% turnover of pupils annually.In addition to general education the staff and helpers provide much needed support for children whose fathers are away on overseas duty.

3 Chris Miller of the Suffolk Punch Trust based at Hollesley Bay Colony Trust gave a most interesting talk about the history of the horse and the Trust. The Suffolk Punch is the oldest breed of horse in the world dating back some 700 years although every Suffolk Punch today can trace its roots back to one stallion bred in 1718 at Ufford.There are only 480 horses worldwide now with 40% in East Anglia. In the past this horse has been extensively used as a farm horse as well as in war, by breweries and other trades which required strong dray horses. The Suffolk Punch which weighs about 1 ton can pull 2.5 times its own weight.Today the horses are used mainly at agricultural shows, weddings and funerals with the Colony Stud having its own 4 horse show team. The site of the Colony Stud was originally a private school called the Colonial College founded in 1903. It then became a trade school for the London Unemployed Mens Society, being converted into a Youth Offenders Prison [Borstal] in the 1920’s and finally becoming an adult prison in the late 20th century. The was always a farm attached with working horses and in 2002 the prison sold 200 acres to the Trust to enable it to secure the future of the Suffolk Punch. There is now a new visitor centre and a variety of tours are available including wagon rides and golf buggies for the less mobile. The centre is open every day during July and August and at certain times through the rest of the year.

4 Bob Malster has spent much time researching at the Suffolk Records Office in Ipswich concentrating recently on the archives of the Mingey family from Orford. They were farmers,grain merchants and boat owners in the early 19th century with a large fleet of coastal schooners and sloops. He has found many letters, accounts and other records tracing the operation of their business over 100 years or so. These small boats moved grain from Iken Quay, Boyton Harbour and Orford to the London Markets but also transported a variety of cargos around the British Isles as well as to the near Continent. He related a number of tales gleaned from the letters etc which presented a fascinating insight into the coastal trade of the time.

Inflammation is Information None of us enjoy the pain associated with inflammation, but that does not change the fact that inflammation is a highly purposeful process. Bruno Van Brandt, Scientific Director of Heel Labs in Belgium says “Blocking the regulation mechanisms in the case of non-life threatening symptoms or conditions is biotherapeutically irresponsible”. Culturally we have evolved the mind-set that discomfort is utterly meaningless and without intrinsic value. Viewed in this light, cessation of a pointless nuisance is the only priority and we reach for the anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). And just because we can buy NSAIDs over the counter we assume they are perfectly safe; they are not. Concern over the negative effects of NSAID use focuses solely on incidences of acute and life-threatening bleeding in the gut. Not appreciated are the long term negative ramifications of derailing the natural repair processes of the body. The reality is that, like all ‘symptoms’, inflammation is both biologically purposeful, and ‘information rich’, if we understand its operation and the context out of which it arises.

Disabling this and other natural processes of repair mortgages our long term health and is contributing to the increase in chronic inflammatory conditions across the population- including children.

The evidence is mounting that our cultural over-emphasis on the shortterm effects powders, pills and potions is mis-placed.

On Tuesday 7th until Thursday 9th February our community was treated to some stunning evening performances by Hadleigh pupils in the musical ‘We Will Rock You.’ Pupils from our feeder primary schools – Elmsett and Hadleigh Community Primary braved the elements on the Monday to support our pupils by acting as our dress rehearsal audience. It was a pleasure to welcome them to our school.

Maths Challenge Many pupils excelling in Maths enjoyed taking part in the Maths Challenge on Thursday 2nd February. They took a test which focuses on problem solving questions, competing with many other pupils across the country.

They will either achieve bronze, silver or gold awards. Students take part in the maths challenge every year and always look forward to it.

The annual production is always very popular with many parents and children supporting the event. It takes a great deal of confidence and commitment by pupils in creating the show and each year our pupils rise to the challenge.

Seeing our pupils showing such high levels of confidence and accomplishment is always very pleasing. To be able to achieve this pupils had to: • Have the confidence to participate in the competitive audition process • Commit to the rigorous after school and weekend rehearsal schedule • Be self disciplined in highly organised in practising their lines and learn songs • Work very closely and supportively with other members of the cast demonstrating excellent teamworking skills • Maintain the stamina to undertake 3 consecutive performances as well as the dress rehearsal shown to members of our feeder primary schools • Maintain a positive outlook and self-belief I would like to thank all our pupils and staff for the efforts they made over the evening and for the support of parents who ensured their child/ren were able to participate. In addition, I would like to thank all members of our community who attended the performances.

Cyber bullying In assemblies last week a presentation was shown to all years explaining the dangers of cyber bullying. Students were warned about the complications that someone could get into if they were sending inappropriate messages on social networking sites and through text messaging. The assembly offered students insightful knowledge as to how those sorts of problems appeared in today’s news and what would happen if they were involved. This is just one of the many campaigns that the school has in order to prevent any incidents of bullying.

Eastern County Cross Country Championships Last Saturday (5th February) Hadleigh High School had two students representing Suffolk Schools in the Eastern Cross Country Championships held at Royal Hospital School. In the minor boys’ event Alex Baxter ran extremely well to finish in 1st place. In the inter boys’ event Toby Rankin finished in 43rd position.

Both students should be congratulated for doing so well in what were extremely cold and windy conditions. Former Hadleigh High School student Kieran Clements who now attends Northgate sixth form finished second in the Southern Counties Championships which were recently held in Brighton.

Winter Sports tour Students are looking forward to their departure on Friday the 10th when they will travel to the Alps in Wagrain, Austria. If you missed out this year not to worry Mr Tunaley is arranging the same trip in 2014 for years 7,8 and 9 two weeks after he returns from the 2012 tour.

Debate Club Debate club is due to start after half term. It is an opportunity for everyone to talk about current issues that they are interested in. It offers students a chance to talk about topics that interest them and that they feel strongly about. It is taking place on Monday the 20th after half term. If you have any further questions see Mrs Thomas.

Library news Just before Christmas the Library offered Year 7 pupils the chance to take part in a Book Mastermind competition. The competition is organized by the Schools Library Service for schools in Suffolk and Norfolk area. Our school winner was invited to the Local Area Final held at the Ipswich Academy on the 1st of February and put in a fantastic performance. The competition was so popular among Year 7 pupils; it will run again this year for Years 7, 8 and 9. Our Library Book Club which currently has 20 members runs fortnightly.

Pupils choose a fiction book to read and give a verbal review about the book when we next meet. Pupils recommend the books they enjoy reading to others in the group. Our favourite books this term have been War Horse by Michael Morpurgo and Lily Alone by Jacqueline Wilson. World book day is on Thursday 1st march. The Library will be celebrating by holding a lunchtime quiz and promoting the ever popular Bookmark competition.

Prizes will be a book of the pupil’s choice.

Production This year’s production of “We Will Rock You” takes place in a futuristic setting where originality and individualism are shunned. The entire planet is ruled by Global Soft, a vast omnipresent company which rules through the use of technology. All live music has been banned. Then Galileo appears, a prophet like figure, who seems destined to fulfil a prophecy that will enable the return of rock ‘n roll. After much preparation, it’s finally Showtime! The performances on Tuesday 7th, Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th of February were a great successes, with much enthusiasm shown on and off stage. A huge thank you to everyone who took part!

At Orchard Barn winter is a time for doing those jobs that require the undergrowth to be more accessible but will also keep you warm, particularly with the hard frosts and snow of the last week! One job OBee Community Interest Company volunteers have been concentrating on in January is hedge laying ~ through which we breath life back into old and out of control hedges turning them into easily maintainable traditional hedgerows that preserve the life of trees and bushes rather than replace them with something far less environmentally friendly.

Hedge laying also continues the natural building lifecycle providing us with supplies of coppiced Elm that we will use in the ongoing restoration of the barn and utilise in our timber framed tool shed this spring. If you pass the centre at Far Ringshall, just outside Battisford, you'll see our new traditional laid hedge growing right in front of you on the roadside! Over the winter months we have also been busy planning our 2012 training course programme which will kick-off with a seminar on "Natural Building - The Traditional Approach" to be held on 24th March at Ringshall Village Hall.

Beaumont School With the half term break fast approaching, now is a good time to reflect on what has been a very productive and successful half term at Beaumont School. As many of you will know Beaumont School was designed and built as an ecologically friendly school, and as Fun in the snow Beaumont School such has received national recognition. The children and staff at Beaumont all feel extremely fortunate to be able work and learn in such an exciting environment. The school building itself is a superb resource to have at our disposal to support learning about environmental issues. As well as the wind turbine which has become a local landmark, the building has solar panels on the roof, a rain water recycling system, a sedum roof and a range of other technological features which makes it more environmentally friendly.

At Beaumont it is not just the building that makes us environmentally friendly, we see it as an important part of the curriculum to teach the children about the impact they have on the environment, encouraging them to switch lights off, recycle materials and to think about the way they use resources. Recently, as Owls class at Wolves Wood part of their environmental studies Year 6 carried out a water use survey, with the view of reducing the amount of water they use at home. These children also surveyed the pupils and staff to find out how they travel to the school. They were able to find out that by far the majority of our children walk or bike to school.

As a continuation of the children’s studies on the environment and habitats a group of children from the school were lucky enough to visit Wolves Wood, a fantastic local resource. The wood was still covered in snow, which made it a unique visit, as the children were able to spot and identify animal tracks and trails imprinted in the snow. We were guided around the wood by a very knowledgeable RSPB warden who explained to the children how diverse the wildlife was that used the ancient woodland and how specialised some of the creature’s habitats were. The children learned an awful lot from their visit, which made the frozen toes worthwhile!

Another important part of the curriculum is teaching the children about the importance of money and becoming financially secure. To this affect the Penguins class took part in a money day organised by Ipswich Building society. The children found out all about the history of money, the different currencies used around the world and took part in various activities involving money. One activity was to construct and decorate their own money box. These money boxes are now on display in the Ipswich Building Society branch in Hadleigh.

At the end of the half term the snow became an exciting addition to the school day. During the snowy period the children had a wonderful time together on the school field enjoying the snow. An army of snowmen appeared, along with various igloos and snow seats. The cooperation and teamwork these activities generated was wonderful to see. A reminder that so much learning in school can happen outside the classroom.

HCPS singers join the civic service On Monday 6th February, despite the snow, our Year 6 children joined other schools in Hadleigh, local dignitaries and the public at a civic service to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. As part of the service, our Year 6 children sang a medley of songs (ably arranged by Mrs Broadbent, our music teacher), to represent different eras during the Queen’s life. The songs included were ‘Let there be peace on Earth’, White Cliffs of Dover’, ‘There’ll always be an England’, ‘All through the night’, ‘I vow to thee my country’ and ‘Rule Britannia’.

The children sang beautifully and were a real credit to the school. Well done!

Sports News There have numerous exciting been events in our sports department during the last month. Here is a sample of what the children have been offered: Basketball Festival The basketball festival was held at Hadleigh High School on Friday 27th January. At this event, our team played against every local primary school, and we are delighted to report that we won!

It was an extremely well organised event and we would like to thank the High School for all of their support.

Npower Football League Competition On Wednesday 1st February, a group of our children were invited to take part in a competition at the ITFC ground, Portman Road. Our school competed against a number of Ipswich schools, and although on this occasion we did not win anything, it was a superb experience for the children.

Ipswich Players visit Strikers Our ‘Strikers’ after school football club were delighted when Aaron Cresswell (a current ITFC player), and Alan Mahon (a former ITFC player), ‘dropped in’ to Strikers to join in with the games and refereeing. Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Nuttall for arranging this – the children had a great time.

Cricket set donation On Monday 6th February, the whole school was delighted when they were presented with a full cricket set, donated to us by the Royal Air Force. We would like to thank Mr Seed, who made this possible.

Themed Days for Literacy and Science By the time you receive this newsletter, we will have already celebrated World Book Day and Science and Engineering Week. For Science Day, we will be working on the theme ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me out of Here!’ Both events will be whole school celebrations, involving dressing up and being involved in lots of exciting activities – more news to follow next month.

Greetings from Fidelis Lin’s ‘Make and Take’ evening has become a popular fixture on the Fidelis calendar and this year was no exception. Its popularity could be attributed to the variety of activities on offer over the years or maybe it’s just the ladies’ ability to multi-task.

This makes it possible to be ‘crafty’ and sociable at the same time. The theme for Pat Ellis, Nanette Ward, Susan Hughes the first monthly gathering & Kathy Carr in 2012 was greeting cards.

With a vast miscellany of cut outs, sticks-ons, coloured ribbons and decorative punches at their disposal it was not surprising the outstanding results would make any professional card company nervous. Lin, June and Eve were on hand to offer artistic and practical advice, especially with some of the technical gizmos. It was a thoroughly absorbing and enjoyable evening with the end products being personal, distinctive and attractively fit for purpose.

Hadleigh Craft & Food Fair 25th March 2012 Easter is approaching and time to get some Easter presents or just treat yourself at our craft & food fair on the 25th March at the Town hall complex, market place in Hadleigh. Yet again we have filled all the halls full of handmade delights for all tastes and needs. We have children's bags to colour, cards and stationery, a range of jewellery for all ages, knitted items, home fashion accessories, soft toys, wood turning, handbags, pot pouri, books, glass wear, cosmetics, baby items, candles plus lots more.

We have quite a few new stall holders this year as word has gone round about our craft fairs including gifts with a humorous touch which sell belly button cleaners, knickers made out of dusters and weather rocks. Also organic skin care products, sock monkeys, pop music and film memorabilia and studio portraits. And in our food hall we have cupcakes, preserves, home-made fudge and sweets, Indian pickles and also a choice of kitchen ware. The craft fair is open from 10am-4pm at the Town Hall complex in the Market Place with entrances at the main door opposite the Ram and also opposite St Mary's church (look out of the signs). Entry is £1 each with wheelchair uses 50p each (as limited access to 2 rooms) Children under 14 are free with paying adult. After you have had a good look around or maybe before you can pop in to the dining room to grab a lovely cup of coffee or tea or maybe try the soup of the day or treat yourself to some yummy cake. As I said all pitches are filled so it yet again looks like its going to be a fantastic day to come and have a look around.

Jerry’s Diary The cold snap only lasted a week, but came as no surprise to me.

Never rule out any cold snaps until March is over. It was so mild during January, the arctic conditions must have caught out birds that had paired up too early. Birds were still singing in the cold snap. Many Wrens as well, the River Brett along Benton end was ice free in places. 5 Little Egrets, 20+ Snipe, 3 Green Sandpiper, 2 Woodcock, 14 Teal, 30+ Mallard and 4 Little Grebe were all seen here for a while.

Many people had seen Redwings A Little Owl taken by Peter Cutts and Fieldfares feeding on berries in Lower Layham and apples in their gardens. A winter roost of 200+ Pied Wagtails in Laurel hedge beside CO-OP. Peregrine Falcons have been seen at Elmsett, Semer, Lindsey and Withermarsh Green. More Barn Owls reported from several parishes. I saw one being mobbed by a Common Buzzard along the pit road at Layham. Harsh weather will force Barn Owls to hunt in daylight hours, perhaps being targeted themselves by predators. The Great Grey Shrike at Lower Layham reappeared a few days before the snow came. It was showing well along the pit road, until at least 18th Feb. Another Shrike has been seen at Lakenheath.

Nightingale Survey 2012 This survey will map all singing male Nightingales and compare numbers with the 1999 survey. 50+ singing males I found in 1999, all in the local patch, but I don’t think I will hear that many this time. If you have land within a 10 mile radius of Hadleigh and would like to be included in this survey, contact me on the email address below.

The quick thaw on Monday 13th February came to our rescue so travelling, even from out of town, was very simple thank goodness, after a week of ice and snow.

Our speaker for the February meeting was our own President, Mr John Rye, who spoke on the subject of the development of his garden from 1975 to the present day. Certainly no-one could accuse John or his wife Mary of being slouchers since moving into their virgin garden and all the usual horrors of the mess and muddle builders leave behind them. I can identify so well with this scenario of, in his case cast large slabs for retaining walls, in mine cutting vast quantities of 3/4â&#x20AC;? slabs for retaining walls and garden edging. When we moved in, in 1962, David was site engineer for Herts C.C. working on the Baldock bypass and decided to rescue the thrown out broken slabs used to pave the bridge embankments. They worked well and it certainly built my biceps but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do much for his car springs! He also bought home about half a mile of abandoned contractors telephone wire very useful for training raspberries etc! So, back to John and his masterpiece. All those years of hard work and dedication have well and truly paid off as they have a wonderful garden of exciting levels and burgeoning growth of flowers, vegetables, fruit and shrubs - well done to you both and thank you John for the beautifully presented illustrated talk. Hadleigh Gardens At the time of writing I am frustrated. The Winter jobs were going so well, and then the snow and hard frosts came, and progress stopped. It is not a good idea doing pruning when there are hard frosts about, and those frosts in early February were the worst for some years. I have also had a problem with my greenhouse heating, which is in any case not set up to cope with the really hard frosts which we have had recently, so I shall find out in time how many plants will succumb, and how many will recover.

The weather for the next few days looks better, so may be I shall get back on course again.

Hopefully the frost will have killed off some of the garden pests, so it will be interesting to see what gives us gardeners most trouble this year. The RHS run an enquiry service, and at the end of each year publish a league table showing the 10 problems that have resulted in the most enquiries.

Last year the order was :1 Slugs and snails 2 Cushion scale 3 Vine weevil 4 Ants 5 Viburnum beetle = 6 Fuchsia gall mite = 6 Cypress aphid = 8 Leek moth = 8 Chafer grubs = 8 Mealybugs = 8 Brown scale The interesting thing is that 4 of these I have never seen. These are Cushion scale (A scale insect affecting Camellias, Rhododendrons, and Euonymus and Holly ), Viburnum beetle ( Both larvae and adults feast on the foliage of viburnum tinus and opulus), Fuchsia gall mite (A mite that appeared in 2007 on the South coast and is spreading), and Cypress aphid (An aphid that sucks the sap on cypress shoots and causes dieback of the shoot).

Weather Records We started the new year in January with 51.8 mm (2") of rain which is about average. In the last 3 months we have had 142.8 mm (5.6") of rain which is just short of average. This is not going to help much in filling up the reservoirs after the dry 2011. In January the maximum temperature was 13 Cel (55F) which is incredibly warm. In 2008 there was a maximum of 14 Cel, otherwise this was the highest back to 2000. The minimum was -2 Cel (32F), which is the highest again except for 2008. In my garden the ground temperature in mid February is 3 Cel (37F) .

Hints This is the month when you need plenty of time. By the end of the month you are going to need to use your lawn mower if you have a lawn, so make sure it is in good working condition. Grass should be cut for the first time when it is 2" to 3" long. When you first cut it set the mower higher than you would use later in the season, and get it down to the height you want over 3 or 4 cuts. This is also a good time to tidy up the edges, and to reseed any bare patches. This is the time to prune your roses, but not when frosts are expected. Make sure you have a sharp pair of secateurs so that you get clean cuts. Start by cutting out any weak and spindly growth, and then cut the remaining strong growths back to an outward facing dormant bud. Cuts should be at an angle starting below the bud on the opposite side of the stem to the bud, and ending just above the bud on the bud side of the stem. This should stop stems dying back. It is not easy to suggest how long to leave stems now as there are so many types, but I would suggest halving the stem length would suit most common types, with one stem being cut shorter to promote new growth.

Another little job to do as you walk around is to check that ties on trees and shrubs have not broken, and are not too tight.

Dear Sir I took my dog for a walk and wandered down Frog Hall Lane leading toward the High School and the amount of litter was alarming! Plastic bags in the trees, crisp packets etc on the grass verges, plastic bottles thrown on the pathways. Along the lane opposite the school there is a sportsfield used by the pupils where there is a sign on the gate ‘No Dogs, dog fouling will result in a fine’ (quite right) and ‘photos will be taken and given to police’. But is it right that there is one law for dog owners and another for people who drop other forms of litter? I have spoken to the school and the Headmistress but things are as bad as ever. These young people will one day have children themselves so if they are not made aware of their surroundings what hope is there for the future? We live in a lovely town with beautiful countryside, let’s all pull together to keep it a pleasant place to be.

Dear Sir Support Your Local Garage! I would like to express my thanks to the staff and mechanics at Ainger Holbrow for their excellent level of customer service. I recently had to have a part replaced on my car which they did at a very reasonable price and quickly too. Unfortunately, the initial problem reappeared again a little while later, (due to the failure of the manufacturer's part NOT AH's work) and they were extremely diligent in rectifying the problem at no cost and in a super quick time, i.e. I left the car on their forecourt with a note on Sunday, and they called me at 8am the next morning to advise that it was sorted! Now where else do you get that kind of service? As a local driving instructor, my car is an essential work tool, (surprise, surprise!) and I, (and my students), cannot afford to be without it for long, so thank you very, very much guys, I know where the car will be serviced next!

Dear Sir When Viking warriors die, it is their fervent wish that their souls go to Valhalla where they can spend all eternity feasting and drinking. Simple so far, but now we come to John Caley and the other two people who want a Tesco store in Hadleigh. Their problem is that going to heaven is out of the question, as there is no way St Peter is going to give planning permission for a new Tesco superstore right by the Pearly Gates.

Fortunately they do have an alternative which for them is probably more appealing, their souls will be transported to the Tesco store at Copdock, there they can spend all of eternity wheeling their trolley through the aisles searching for 1p off of a tin of beans. If John seriously wants the Brett works site cleaned up, he should write to the owners of the site, as it is their responsibility, and they should not have deliberately run the site down.

Have I missed something? Some months ago, unless I am going completely and utterly mad, I believe I took part in a local referendum which asked ‘Did I want Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils to Merge’ or words to that effect I seem to recall. I and the majority of people who responded in Babergh, 60.9% I believe, said ‘NO’, in my case because I doubt they will save money at all! I am now constantly reading in the EADT that the two councils are ‘merging this department’ and ‘merging that department’ - what was the point of the referendum? I suppose that’s democracy for you!

On a lighter note myself and Mrs Keeper spent the day in London recently, travelling for the first time on one of Beestons day excursions, what a brilliant day we had. A comfortable ride down in a luxury coach, dropped off outside the theatre, a few hours shopping, a lovely lunch, an enjoyable musical and back onto the coach which was waiting for us outside the theatre at the end of the show for the journey home. So if you want a stress-free day out in London give Beestons a call, you will not be disappointed!

Dear Sir On hearing two songs recently, ‘Slip Sliding Away’ by Paul Simon, and ‘Can't Stand Up But Keep Falling Down’ Elvis Costello, Reminds me of the past week, When we had snow, 15cm of the stuff. Its a cover up, what ever way you look at it! On one hand you have the dog poo the not so polite way of putting it! With their not so polite owners with their bad habit of leaving the stuff all over the pavements, and play area's now covered with the ice and snow, which has laid there all week, since February the 4th, till this day of my writing, February 13th. Why Oh! why have the pavements remained covered with snow and Ice!!! How many people like me have had to walk in the middle of the road to get from A to B? having put ourselves from one danger the pavements to walking on the roads. Is walking in the middle of the road a Hadleigh thing? as was done in by gone days, when cattle was driven along Hadleigh High Street, to the market place for sale!! We are not expected to do that in 2012 heaven for bid. I pay £1500 per year council tax, like all Tax Payers, I bet you would all like to know, what do we really get for our money, I know we get an Itemised bills at the start of the Tax year!

Is Snow Clearing included, if so, why wasn't it done?

BBC Suffolk are doing something which we should all take note of, ‘Don't Be A Tosser’ we people here in Hadleigh, need to tidy ourselves up, not all mind, using the LITTER BINS provided, by putting our waste litter, in these bins, or take the stuff home, with you. Children should have been taught at home, by their parents, from young. Schools have a role to play, as part of the education programme, teaching the children to be proud of their town, and county, and to have pride in themselves. p.s. Hadleigh Evening WI Hadleigh Evening WI were delighted to welcome all five new members to their February meeting. We will be celebrating the 47th Birthday of the institute with a lunch at a village pub. Also planned for later in the year a coffee morning, a summer garden party and a ramble and cream tea Dressed in an original WVS coat and a dress in the fashion of the period Nina Sharwood gave an account of the role of women in the Second World War. Her interest had been generated by visits to her grandma who married and set up home in 1938 with furniture and fittings of the period.

Nina had a selection of food items in individual wartime ration portions.

Her talk included a description of life before the war when most food was imported. This was prevented by the U boat blockade. The campaign for people to dig for victory encouraged the home production of food to make up the shortfall. Competition a Wartime Momento was won by Gill Taylor with two moving letters to her father whilst he was away serving in the Second World War. She was aged six.

Next months meeting on 20th March in the Seminar suite above the library starting 7.30pm. Wendy Atkins will talk about a honeymoon trip to New England. The competition – American Momento. Visitors and new members are welcome Philippa Carruthers 01473 823057

News from The Station Dear Readers, Welcome to this months edition of news from the Police Station. For some weeks now, we have been liaising with the Show Secretary and Show Director for this years Hadleigh Show. As you may well be aware, this annual event is now in its 173rd year and continues to grow in popularity and size. With an anticipated attendance of 12,000 or more, it is likely that our roads within the Town will become blocked and progress by car will be minimal throughout the day. The show this year is taking place on Saturday 19th May, with the usual fairground operating the proceeding Friday evening. The sharp eyed amongst you may notice that this will coincide with the closure of the Lady Lane junction with the A1071 whilst work is completed on the new roundabout and access road for Persimmon Homes.

Can I ask you all please to bare this in mind when travelling around the Town on show day. We are particularly keen to ensure that visitors to the show use the same route in and out of the Town, and for local residents to consider not using the High Street with their cars as we can hopefully then keep traffic free flowing. This might seem like an extremely early stage to be talking about May, but it is important for us to get the message out there so as people know what to expect over the show weekend.

The Babergh East area is currently experiencing an abnormal amount of shed and garage break-ins. Sadly, we have had an increase in the Hadleigh area too. This serves as a timely reminder that we should all be thinking about making sure our outbuildings are locked and secured. Shed alarms can be purchased from most Police Stations for around £8, but there are a variety of devices on the market that can help you protect your property, and most DIY stores will be able to help you in finding the right product for you. Keep any windows obscured, and mark as many of your shed items as possible with a security pen or distinctive paint. I would also suggest that you make a note of any reference numbers found on power tools and equipment.

Finally, we wave goodbye to two Sergeants in March who have steered and progressed the Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team over the last 18 months. Sergeant Ian Watson, who left the team in September, and Sergeant Colin Curtis both retire from Suffolk Police taking with them over 50 years of combined experience. Both have proved an asset to the team, and will be sadly missed. Our new Sergeant will be Chris Day who had been working on a response policing team in Ipswich prior to coming to work on the Team.

The Wonder of Human Ingenuity What is more amazing, the wonders of the universe or the ingenious methods mankind uses to explore it?

My aim in writing these articles is to write about science that is relevant to you and me. However, some things that don’t seem relevant at first can be if we pause for a moment to think about them. Take the night sky for example, how often have you stopped on a clear, dark night and looked up and been awed by the sheer size and beauty of it all; the enormous number of stars and galaxies, the vastness, and the unimaginable time scales. It is at moments like these that something deep inside us is stirred; something touches our soul and makes a connection to the incredible and mysterious world and universe about us. And anything that can affect us emotionally in that way is very relevant.

This month I want to take you somewhere very different and talk about the search for dark matter and dark energy. Although both were touched on recently by Professor Brian Cox and Dara O Briain in the brilliant BBC ‘Stargazing Live’ TV programmes, it occurred to me that they overlooked something important and truly awe-inspiring, and I would like to put that right. You have no doubt heard of dark matter, it is the 80% of the universe that cannot be seen; and dark energy is just as weird, it is the force that is driving the increasingly fast expansion of the entire universe. Both dark matter and dark energy are a mystery and a huge amount of research is underway to explain them. Take for example the search for dark matter.

Ground-based, telescopes fitted with powerful digital cameras are mapping the sky to find incredibly small variations in the light from distant galaxies that is bent by the gravity of dark matter. In orbit around the Earth, the Hubble telescope is making detailed maps of massive clusters of galaxies, typically four billion light-years away. The aim is to show the distribution of normal and dark matter. In the Chilean Andes the Dark Energy Survey is a new project involving more than 120 researchers from the United States, Spain, UK, Brazil, and Germany. Scientists are mounting a 570-Megapixel digital camera on the Blanco 4-meter telescope to uncover the nature of dark energy by precisely measuring the universe’s rate of expansion.

The search for Earth-like planets is just as exotic. Correctly known as extra-solar planets (or exoplanets for short) there are approximately 100 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy, and most of them have planets. So far cosmologists and astronomers have found over 700 Earth-like planets in the so-called ‘goldilocks zone’ (not too hot and not too cold) on which life could perhaps develop. In space, the Keppler satellite searches for planets by detecting tiny fluctuations in the brightness of a star as its planets move in front of it. Keppler can also find planets by detecting the rocking motion of a star caused by its orbiting planets’ gravitational pull.

Other methods use gravitational lensing and ground-based telescopes to measure changes in the light of the star under observation. To do this two stars have to be in a directly straight line with us on Earth, the star under observation must be in the foreground and another star must be directly behind it. The light from the background star is amplified by the gravity of the foreground star, which acts as a magnifying glass. If there is a planet orbiting the foreground star it can be detected by changes in the background star’s light pattern.

Fantastic as these projects are, what I find truly amazing are the ingenious methods used to search the furthest reaches of space; the sophisticated technology used in telescopes, satellites and cameras; and the hours of research that are necessary to examine the thousands of observations. I believe it clearly shows how amazing we are as humans, able to develop the skills, ideas and technology to understand the immediate world about us, and the larger universe surrounding us. Big or small, cosmic or domestic, we have the power to solve practically any problem if we just put our minds to it. How relevant is that?

Dixon Dart League Although still mathematically possible it looks like there will be new Division One Champions as the Legion Legends narrowly beat their nearest rivals the George A 6-5, the George side were 5-4 up with two to play, but wins from Mick and Ted Harvey secured the victory for the Legends.The Eight bells still have high hopes of finishing in third place in front of the Ram Jets, but with a tough couple of games left against the George A and the Legion Legends its still all to play for. Ivan Clements deserves a mention as he hit back to back 180’s in his win at the Ram Jets. Division two looks like its going to be a last match decider, with the British Legion Dawes having a slender two point advantage over Naughton Wheelers with two to play. We have unbeaten players in both divisions at time of going to print, with Paul Leathers from the Eight Bells in division one, and Jack Bambling for the British Legion Dawes in Division two both on 12 wins. Newton Green’s Free Golf Initiative A new Girls in Golf initiative is being launched at Newton Green after success at an over subscribed event last year. Club professional Tim Cooper has been offered central funding from the sport’s governing bodies to enable juniors and adults to have free tuition. A large number of women who took up the option last year are about to return to the club to take up a course for improvers, prior to consider becoming full members of the ladies section. However, a new batch of beginner level classes as part of Newton’s Girls in Golf work will start in March. The six-week courses run on Saturday and Tuesday mornings, and include coffee and all necessary equipment. Free group beginner classes for boys and girls from five to 16 years also start on the first Saturday in March; with free improvers’ classes also shortly to be announced. Tim Cooper commented: “Because we are one of the most pro-active clubs in Suffolk looking to encourage people into the sport we have been granted exceptionally generous financial support.”

Newton Seniors Donate £500 A cheque for £500 was handed to Angela Bessey, of Marie Curie Cancer (Suffolk Nursing Appeal), by retiring captain Peter Webb at the annual meeting of Newton Green Golf Club Seniors’ Section. The meeting heard in its matches with adjoining clubs the section had scored a majority of wins, and had organised a successful day as part of the club’s annual golf week. The seniors meet on Tuesdays and Thursday, and agreed to keep the same format. However, it will monitor the Tuesday sessions in view of increasing use being made of the course as a result of rising membership and additional visitors to the club. Incoming captain Mick Barlow said there was very good camaraderie in the section and his chosen charity during the year would be Arthritis Research UK.

Winter and spring activities at Hadleigh Bowling Club We started Short-Mat bowling at the end of the outdoor season and our social roll-ups have been well supported, particularly on Tuesday afternoons. Although some of our members had played indoor and/or carpet bowls none of us had experience of Short-Mat, nevertheless we entered a team in the Ipswich League. From the start of the season to Christmas we tried to give as many members as possible matches, both home and away, so that they might appreciate what was involved; not unexpectedly our results were poor and we were bottom of the league.

However, since New Year we have tried to put out stronger teams and results have improved a little and to date we have won three matches and had a few near misses.

On the social side we have a race night on Saturday 3 March and members are asked to put their names on the board as soon as possible to help plan the catering.

Our 2012 summer season starts with our opening drive and supper on 21st April but in the meantime we are holding a coffee and cake morning on Saturday 31 March at 10.30 to 12.00, to allow the members old and new to get together prior to the April opening. The unique feature of this event is that the cakes will be provided by the male members of the committee for a change and anyone who is thinking about joining, experienced or not, is welcome to come along to see what the club has to offer. We are in Stone Street just past the Donkey Bistro. For the novice and inexperienced bowlers we are holding open days on Saturday and Sunday the 28 and 29 April at 14.30 hrs, where our qualified coaches, male and female, will be available to give you an understanding of the game to get you started. Why not have a go, you might like it.

Just a reminder that our traditional early season coffee morning organised by the Ladies Section will also go ahead on Saturday 5th May 10.30 to 12.00 and will have the usual array of stalls including plants, coffee, tea and cakes. All are welcome.

Federation Bowling Success For Hadleigh In their first year of entering the Ipswich Federation Bowls League Hadleigh Bowling Club won Division H. Further they achieved the highest number of points over the entire league. They were presented with the trophies at the annual presentation dinner of the Federation League on Saturday 18 February.

Hadleigh United Under 13’s Hadleigh United began a determined match against Woodbridge Town. Play flowed at a fast pace with both teams giving their all.

Hadleigh passed well and pushed forward putting the pressure on Woodbridge’s defence.

This paid off early in the game when a superb cross into the box from Chilli Wolf set up Captain Oliver Peters to blast Hadleigh United under 13’s pictured the ball into the back of the net with fund raiser Fern Morrin after and give Hadleigh an early their victory against Woodbridge lead. The entire match was full Town on with both teams tirelessly pushing on. Woodbridge made many attempts but Hadleigh defenders Tyler French, William Simmons, Callum Morrin and Luke Brown used their speed and strength not allowing Woodbridge the break they needed. The second half continued at a fast pace with Woodbridge fighting hard for the equaliser. Hadleigh remained calm and increased their lead when Tommy Thorby battled through the Woodbridge defence passing the ball into the box to be finished again by Oliver Peters. Play still continued at a fast pace but Hadleigh remained focused not allowing Woodbridge the break they needed. Final score Hadleigh 2 - Woodbridge Town 0. Man of the Match - Tyler French/William Simmons. After the match Fern Morrin presented the boys with £340.00 which she had raised for their forthcoming tour of Holland. Fern decided that she would like to help to raise some money for the unique opportunity which the boys together with the Under 12’s have been given. Fern swam 128 lengths (2 miles) continually in a time of 1 hour 23 mins and 40 seconds and finished her final two lengths with butterfly. The boys have received lots of support from many others who we will be mentioning at a later stage.

Hadleigh Goldstar Athletic Football Club With the season just over halfway, we are occupying a spot in the lower half of the table, It has been a transitional period where we have introduced a number of younger players to the squad and adult football.

Their settling in period has been harder for them, as we have had some bad injuries to some of the older members at the same time, thus putting more responsibility on their shoulders at a earlier stage than expected.

However with most settling well, and the turnaround in commitment shown by others we look for some better results from now to the end of the season. Yes the Big Man Josh Rix, rest his soul, did also play football as well as Rugby, and Cricket. Indeed he had been a member of Goldstar since the age of sixteen, joining at the same time as brother Tim. When joining he indicated that his first love was Rugby and that he would prefer to be considered as cover for the Goalkeeper position, and that was how it was. However he always signed on and never did let us down when ever called upon to help out, and on one occasion playing in a Junior Cup Semi-final he brought off one of the best saves seen in a Goldstar jersey to allow us to win 1-0 and progress to the final, which we managed to win.

Josh actually played what was to be his last competitive game of sport with us on the Sunday before Christmas, and at the end of the game he took his gloves off and came up shook my hand, and thanked me for the game, saying it was always a pleasure helping us out. That was the sort of chap he was, and will always be remembered for, and will never be forgotten.

Earlier in the season Hadleigh had been heavily beaten by Kirkley but this time Hadleigh were much the better side. Ben Deacon opened the scoring and then Liam Jennings scored with a great shot just before half time. Kirkley scored a good goal on the hour but Hadleigh made certain of victory Ollie Canfer netted number three from a narrow angle to round off a good display by the whole team. Luke Wade made his debut in attack after joining us on loan from Needham Market. The next match was at Walsham and the game ended goalless after an entertaining contest. Our regular goalkeeper Dan Heath was unwell so Andrew Plummer was signed at the last minute and gave a fine display in keeping Walsham at bay. At the other end of the field Hadleigh looked sharp at times especially in the second half but the Walsham keeper was also on top form. In the last minute we were awarded a penalty kick but it was missed as the excellent home keeper made a brilliant saves from Jack Cawlwy’s penalty kick. The Reserves travelled to Felixstowe where goals from Trevor Vinyard and Luke Waugh put us two in front and a win looked likely. But the Seasiders scored twice in the closing stages to earn a share of the spoils. The next match ended in a two goal defeat at the Millfield against Heybridge Reserves. Our Ridgeons Youth team beat Cornard by two goals to one with Patrick Armstrong scoring twice for Hadleigh. The weather then took a turn for the worse with all our teams having games cancelled as snow and ice made football impossible for a couple of weeks during February.

Hadleigh United Fixtures First team fixtures for Hadleigh United in March begin with a home match against Wisbech on Saturday 3rd. On Saturday 10th Ely City travel to the Millfield while the following Saturday, 17th, sees league leaders Wroxham at Haldeigh. A Trip to Felixstowe will be on Tuesday 20th while a busy month ends at the Millfield against Newmarket on Saturday 31st. A full fixture list for the Reserves had not been issued at the time of writing but Felixstowe Reserves are due at the Millfield on Tuesday 27th March. Our Ridgeons Youth team go to Haverhill on Thursday 1st and Clacton on Thursday 8th. A Cup match at Brentwood follows on Wednesday 14th before Wivenhoe will come to Hadleigh on Wednesday 21st. A short trip to Whitton ends the month on Tuesday 27th. Spectators are reminded that fixtures could be altered as cup matches would take preference. Details will be on the club website.

The club teams continue to enjoy success in the local tennis leagues, with the men’s team staying in their summer and winter divisions. The Ladies’ team also enjoyed success in both the winter and summer leagues, being promoted in both. The mixed team has been promoted to division 4 and also looks set to be promoted in the winter league too! So congratulations to the all the players involved, well done! March will see Hadleigh Tennis club resuming play on three sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 9.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. Following this year’s AGM we are pleased to advise that annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (with a £10 discount if paid before April 30th).

Over 140 children aged from 6 to 15 now actively participate and enjoy playing the game and competing on an even playing field with many other clubs in Suffolk and Essex. The club, along with Eastern Counties representatives, held a celebratory evening in February to thank some of the coaches and administrators of the junior section of the club with special awards and trophies for their special contribution.

Hadleigh Carpet Bowls Club It hardly seems possible that we are over half way through the Winter League, having played twelve matches, practically most on our own ground and having won eight of those games. Now, comes the tough time when we play the rest ot the league away with the exception of our friends at Whatfield and Stutton.

Our game with Bentley was a bit of a disaster where nobody could adjust to their fast mats, but having previously beaten them at home we feel that all in all we put up a good show against a very good team.

On recent Monday evenings we had the pleasure of having five new visitors coming to the club due to our persuasive chairman Ray Gant, one I understand was his neighbour Rosemary who had previously been a member of our club and still showed the skill of a seasoned player. Lets hope that they will all continue to come along and eventually become members which will be great news where they will all be made welcome and eventually play perhaps in the Summer League .

We practically had a full membership turn out at our AGM on the 26th of January and at times just a little bit heated, but again with the persuasive ability of Ray it was handled with charm and decorum and new members accepted for the committee, namely Trevor to take over from Val and Jackie to replace Marian, both previous members having done a grand job for two years and felt they now needed a well earned rest. Chris presented the trophies to the winners and runners up of our internal matches and as usual Jock was one of those to the fore and I personally was delighted that Joan, one of the newer members, received a cup for coming runnerup in the ‘pairs’ considering she has only been with the club for two years.

On the evening of the first of February we played Bramford on their home ground and came away with a 2-2 draw but just lost on shots giving them a victory of 6-4 . Well done to all our players especially as one of the carpets had a mind of its own and caused our bowlers much trouble where as the Bramford players found it no problem at all taking a score of seven early in one game ! Yes, I do know that carpets are always an excuse for losing but this one really was a problem, however I am sure that Trevor must have been delighted with the result, this being his first venture in charge.

By the time this write-up is printed and distributed we will have played Bealings, Burstall and Brantham and perhaps Kesgrave. Here’s hoping they will all be victories and that the weather will have improved, but attached is a picture taken a few days ago which did prevent recent ‘roll-ups.
