Best Ever Hadleigh Lighting Up! Happy New Year to everybody as we welcome 2012 and another year of entertainment for Hadleigh.

The Christmas Lighting Up took place on the 4th December last year and what a turn out we had. The weather was very good to us this year as hundreds of people came down to see the lighting up take place in the Market Place area.

Stage acts included Harry & Millie who then also performed in the Ansell Centre, then Diamond Lites Majorettes delighted us with some Christmas displays followed by the band ‘Bof’ with some folk music. We also had a snippet from HADS show ‘Peter Pan’ followed by Janet and her

Fundancing display who braved the cold in their Mrs Claus outfits. We then had our runner up Jemma Gates and under 16's winner Ellen Clarke and Over 16's winner Kay Griggs our winners from ‘Hadleigh Has Talent’ perform their winning songs.

We were then treated by Hadleigh High Schools ‘Gracenotes’ Choir followed by the Junior Choir who sang ‘Silent Night’ accompanied by the Ipswich and Norwich Co-op Brass Band. The band was then joined by Rev'd Jim Dalgleish and Greg Frost who led the carols with the words this year appearing on the screens. The timing was just right as at 6pm Hadleigh Town Mayor Miss Penny Cook started the count down as the lights were turned on and snow covered the Market Place as we all joined in singing ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’. I would like to personally thank Tom Gordon and his dad for helping with the Tech side of things and Eclipse stage who made this year run so smoothly. Also a big thank you to all the above for taking time to perform on stage and also making the day an enjoyable one. ...Continued on page 3

Tricky Business at Fidelis It’s a brave man who tries to fool a room full of very observant ladies.

Magician, Colin Hopper not only happily accepted the challenge but also succeeded when he came to a recent Fidelis meeting. Being a member of the Magic Circle, Past President and member of the Ipswich Magic Circle who has been performing since the age of eight, gave him a head start over his unsuspecting audience. His tricks were interspersed with snippets of the history of magic, and illusion plus personal anecdotes. Magic wands, eggs and playing cards came and went inexplicably, much to the amazement of his vigilant onlookers.

Happily, all the tricky business stopped for tea so no worries there.

Best ever Hadleigh Lighting Up! Further down the road the Scouts BBQ was a big hit and the mini donuts went down a treat. The Rotary Clubs santas grotto was on hand to see who was naughty or nice and the traditional fun fair in the doctors car park was very impressive as people followed the lights to have a go in the chair-o-planes or on the swing boats. The Ansell Centre was heaving as people packed the hall looking for gift ideas or to see if they was lucky on the tombolla stall.

In the church the Shelter Box display was kept busy with Jim just getting away in time to the lighting up on stage. I would like to yet again thank the URC and all the stall holders and helpers above for making this event a successful one. This year is the first year I have asked for sponsorship for the lighting up event so I would like to thank. Also we had help from Chamber of Commerce and Cowles Electrical and also Hollowtrees farm shop with the big Christmas tree in the market place. I would also like to thank the town forum members and also the Town council staff for all the paper work involved with this event not forgetting the main back bone to these events Sarah & Brain Loftus, Elaine & Glen Root, as well as Sarah-Jane Ganner who are always around to help me out, and without this small team this event would not happen every year.

Our next event is our Craft Fair which is on the 25th March 2012 at the Town Hall Complex. This time we will be operating a first come first served basis as this event is getting very popular. As 2011 comes to a close my staff and I would like to wish all our customers a very happy new year. And a final reminder to everyone – the pharmacy and the dispensary moved to the fully refurbished fire station next to the health centre on December 5th when Penny Cook, the Mayor very kindly carried out the opening ceremony.

Hadleigh Orchestra Thank you to everybody who came and supported our concert on Dec. 11th. And thank you for your magnificent response. As a result we have been able to make a donation of £150. to St. Joseph’s which will help to fund the important work they are doing to their hall and we are able to defray the cost of the concert. So thank you again for your response and for your enthusiasm at the end. We felt it was our best Christmas concert yet and one which we thoroughly enjoyed. Our next Concert will be in the summer at Polstead, provisionally on June 10th., and is likely to feature a ’cellist soloist.

If you are thinking of joining the Orchestra, January is the time to come.

We begin our rehearsals on Monday Jan. 16th. at Beaumont Community School at 7.30 p.m. We welcome new players – both those who are thinking of joining an Orchestra for the first time, as well as experienced players. Hadleigh Community Primary News A resource to help during sad times During the course of the last year, we were sadly made aware of the need for a Bereavement Box within the school. This is a wonderful resource comprising of books, games and work books with activities to help support children and families encountering difficult and trying situations in their young lives.

Thanks to the incredible support from the local community, the Bereavement Box is now in operation. It is located at Hadleigh Community Primary School but is available for all primary children within the local area. New sports kit in use – thanks to Santander Bank We were delighted when Avril and Julie from the Santander Hadleigh branch approached the school with an offer of a new sports kit (worth hundreds of pounds). They recently presented the kit to the school during an assembly and the children were delighted with the gift, which was worn for the very first time on Wednesday 23rd November during an away match against Cedarwood primary school.

A busy time for all at the end of term There have been a huge number of performances taking place around the school to celebrate the Christmas season. Year one started the proceedings with their wonderful performances of ‘Mary’s Knitting’. Then, in the penultimate week of term, the whole school and parents enjoyed Year two’s fantastic performances of ‘Prickly Hay’. Following that, on Thursday 8th December, Reception held a Show and Tell afternoon, and as part of it, each class put on a performance of ‘By the Bright, Bright Star.’

A huge number of parents attended and supported the children, and there was a wonderful atmosphere around the school.

Finally, in the last week of term, Nursery put on their own performance of Christmas songs for parents and the whole of Key Stage Two went to St Mary’s church for their annual carol service! We certainly celebrate Christmas in style at Hadleigh Community Primary School!

Howard and Janet at Thursford Christmas Show Many of you will remember that I went to the Thursford Christmas Show last year for the first time. Many months ago I booked to take a party of seven to the Show this year. It was splendid, lavish and full of Christmas. It irritates me beyond belief that Christmas is dumbed down these days but there was none of that here. I arranged for us all to have tea at the White Horse Inn in Fakenham.

Our cavalcade pulled up and we all enjoyed plates of sandwiches, cold meats, pickled onions and similar so that we were replete when we completed our long journey. Thursford is a steam museum and all around there are steam engines, carrousels and contraptions lit with beautiful Christmas lights. The picture shows me with my Secretary Janet Harrop and one of our friends Deano Akers and we all seem to be enjoying ourselves immensely.

I have a two bedroomed flat to let and thus if you know of a suitable person seeking privately rented accommodation then do please let me know.

The last edition of this our beloved publication contained a letter to the editor whose author suggested that he was at school with me. I did not know the person from adam and the letter was not really “our sort of thing”. In fact, I am proud to say that my school days were spent at Pinner Grammar School in Middlesex. It sounds as if life in Schools is not what it was in my day albeit that such high grades appear to be attained. My experience is that youngsters appear to lack social skills and are poor at face to face communication the result no doubt of an obsession with computers.

I have mentioned in my column on a previous occasion the impact of the Motor Insurers Bureau database. One’s car is not considered as “officially” insured unless it appears on that database. I recently experienced difficulty in connection with one of my vehicles. The insurance broker sought to persuade me to speak to the DVLA and I refused. It is the responsibility of the broker to make the appropriate filing. Do check your own car at www.askmid.com.

Thank you to everyone who attended our event in December. After that evening, several people mentioned that the hall was a bit gloomy without lights. We agree, so we'll be reinstating our warm but friendly lights in January. When we first started our folk evenings we were worried that this type of thing would not be viable but luckily we have been proved wrong by the wonderful Hadleigh audience and we are hoping to continue with a second season. Our next evening is on Friday 6th January when we will be hosting Two Coats Colder, who sing traditional and contemporary folk from both sides of the Atlantic (www.twocoatscolder.com) and we will be presenting a selection of floor singers as usual and a support act, Richard and Maria.

Following that, our next evening, Friday 3rd February will be spent with KEGS, a trio of songwriters who also perform material from the international folk tradition and pop culture, on guitar, melodeon and flute (www.kegsband.co.uk). They will be supported by a popular local performer, Elaine Barker, singing some well-known songs and maybe even a monologue. We look forward to seeing you on these occasions.

The evening starts at 8pm and admission is £5 (£2 for performers).

Hintlesham Songs Of Praise for Christmas Held in the Community Hall on 4th December, it was once again a great turnout. Thankyou. One or two minor hiccups all helped to make the event very enjoyable. The singing was again led by the Elmsett Brass Band, with Colin Wright on the keyboard. Our thanks to all who helped in so many ways. Zumba Fitness Have you ever Zumba'd? If not I bet you've heard of it. It is the fitness craze that's taken the nation by storm.

Zumba started in the mid 1990’s, a fitness instructor from Colombia named Alberto “Beto” Perez forget to bring his usual aerobics music to the aerobics class he was teaching one day. He decided to use some of his other music he had with him during the class and led people through the class using dance moves that flowed to the music rather than being counted to certain beats and reps. Everyone loved it, so several years later he brought his idea to the United States and it took off from there.

Because it is easy to follow and offers variety, it is considered by many to be a fun way to exercise. When exercise is fun, it is easier to stick with it and look forward to it, rather than dreading it or skipping out on it altogether. People of all ages, body types and fitness levels are able to enjoy Zumba and burn calories as they dance to the music. Did you know you can burn between 300-600 calories per class.

Now Kat is bringing Zumba to Hadleigh on a Tuesday morning at the British Legion. "As a qualified fitness instructor I'm always looking for new ways to encourage people to exercise, and Zumba is exercise in disguise, because the class has such a party atmosphere the hour flies by. There's no clock watching like you do when working out at he gym, and anyone can join in and enjoy Zumba. My class is for all abilities and ages".

Make It Your New Year’s Resolution to Have Your Hearing Checked!

By Karen Finch RHAD FSHAA FRSA, Hearing Aid Audiologist and Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre What’s already on your 2011 resolution list? Eat less chocolate? Get fit?

Give up smoking? In a nutshell, the desire to look after one’s self better?!

So, if you have become aware that your hearing has deteriorated, getting it checked should also be at the top of your list!

Over 119,000 in Suffolk have hearing problems and only a third actually seek professional help for this. These figures are bad enough in themselves, but when you realise that only a third of people who would benefit from a hearing aid, have one, you begin to see the size of the problem facing the hearing care professionals – and to be brutally honest, the families of those people too. There is plenty of evidence that people with uncorrected hearing loss have a worse quality of life than those with normal hearing, and there is also evidence that untreated hearing loss can lead to people suffering from serious social or psychological problems. People with hearing loss tend to get left out of family discussions and decision-making and for many this will have been highlighted over the festive period. There are frequent misunderstandings, relationships can become difficult, marriages strained and the unimpaired partner can suffer stress, fatigue, anger and guilt.

Wanted: Used Plastic Bottles 2 Litre round, 5 Litre Square The Suffolk Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners (SSALG) is planning a special display at this year’s Suffolk Show – a magnificent greenhouse and growing pots ALL made out of plastic bottles. As an affiliated group we are playing our part (like many others) in appealing for waste plastic bottles. Can you help us? They should be clear bottles, empty, rinsed out and without labels. Also the cap should be on so that they keep their shape. So please don’t throw them away after Christmas (even for re-cycling!), pass them on to us and we will store them on our association’s shed until they are wanted. New Group for Hadleigh's Young(ish!) Women!

The Hen House is a new group for women in Hadleigh who are interested in getting together for a bit of fun once a month to do something a bit different! We are aged between 30(ish) to 50(ish) and aim to meet once a month on the second Monday of each month to have a natter and giggle.

We hope to do something different every time we meet. Activities in the pipeline for the future include; a French evening; going to the theatre; having a make over/pamper evening and doing some chocolate making!

If this sounds like something you are interested in joining us for we would love to see you at our next meeting. We had our very first meeting in December, painting pottery over a few glasses of wine and mince pies. It was laid back night and many of us surprised ourselves with our undiscovered creativity and produces some real masterpieces!

The tables were tastefully decorated and ready to receive their chic party-goers. Happily, it was still early enough for turkey-fatigue not to have taken a hold or, if it had, an alternative meal was available. Cheryl Salisbury and her team produced the most delicious meal with all the seasonal trimmings from the depths of the premises and as ever the room fell silent - well almost. Over coffee and naughties, Liz welcomed members and handed over to Jan Devey for a little light, topical entertainment. Jan presented the newly created NATFA, Needle and Thread Fundraiser’s Award to Lin Slaughter for her outstanding contribution to fundraising for charity. There was further hilarity as Hilary Ferry and Jan Devey, alias The Chancellor and a Banker and dressed as golfers, performed a topical sketch re-worded to the rhythm of ‘There’s a Hole in my Bucket’. Liz then thanked all involved in the evening and wished everyone a very happy Christmas and New Year. If you have been following the fortunes of Fidelis by reading my brief reports each month I hope that you have enjoyed them. All the very best for a happy, healthy 2012.

New Fostering Agency opens its doors in our region East Bergholt based Eastern Family Services (EFS) is a local fostering agency aiming to provide foster carers for children who cannot live with their own families, for a whole variety of reasons.

Set up this year by Eleanor Vanner and Tony Jones, both of whom have extensive local experience in fostering and social care, EFS is looking for people who can provide safe and nurturing homes for children of all ages.

To become a foster carer, there are many things you don’t need, such as to own your own house, or be married and have children of your own but you do need to have patience, resilience and a good sense of humour!

You also need to have some experience with children, either from your own family or through your working experience.

Often children just need a short stay with fostering families whilst things are worked out, and they return to live with their own families, this is always the outcome that we work to if at all possible, but sometimes children need a permanent fostering family who can help them grow up in a loving and secure home.

EFS is looking for people from all backgrounds who can offer a home to children either for a short period or to help them grow up and support them into adulthood. To become a foster carer, a family assessment is involved and we provide initial training to help develop an understanding of what fostering is all about as well as on-going visits when a child actually comes to live with a family. EFS also pays a good financial allowance to people who are looking after children and we can call on a whole network of expert advice when we need it to make sure we offer our carers and children the best possible support.

Hadleigh Evening WI At the December meeting of Hadleigh Evening WI we were delighted to welcome two new members Linda Stratford and Olive Martin who joined us from Leavenheath. Our visitors included Helen Gates and Stella Young.

A lively wine tasting provided an ideal start to the festive season. Manager of the Hadleigh Adnams store Luke Crawley served a selection of wines inviting everyone to write down their comments. He gave an interesting account of the history, location and growing conditions of the individual grapes. Responses varied. The fact that women generally prefer white wines was confirmed with a modestly price Sauvignon blanc being the favourite. Following Lukes presentation the Committee provided refreshments after which everyone decided we should sing carols. We were all in good voice. From memory and unaccompanied we sang our hearts out. A rendition of Rudolf the Red Nosed reindeer provided an amusing variation. It was a very happy evening. Our next meeting will be held on 17 January 2012 in the Seminar suite above Hadleigh Library starting 7.30pm. Brian Dix will give a presentation entitled “Whales�.

A performing arts school launched earlier this year, put on its very first production “Christmas Stars” at Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston on the 11th December. Students at the school, ranging in ages from as young as four, danced and sang their hearts out, putting on a very professional variety show of exceptional standards to a packed audience. Miss Lesley, Principal of Miss Lesley’s School of Performing Arts said “I would like to take this opportunity to stress how proud I am of ALL my pupils. I would never generally put on a show until at least a year after teaching pupils for the first time. However, despite them having just 24 lessons (some of them less!) they have amazed with me their enthusiasm, talent and eagerness to perform to an audience; they truly are ALL my little stars!”

A two hour show with costume changes, lighting and smoke machines had children giving performances from Oliver, Wizard of Oz, Grease, Hairspray and much, much more resulting in the audience giving a standing ovation at the finale. A former student and teacher at the famous Italia Conti Academy in London, Miss Lesley has had a successful career in show business working on both TV and the West End. Now relocated and living in Suffolk she is pleased to bring her knowledge and experience to children in a rural community. Profits from the “Christmas Stars” will be used to subsidise a trip for all the students to hopefully see a top show either locally or in London’s West End sometime in 2012!

News from St Mary’s Primary School Thank you to all the members of the Parent Support Group for organising two fantastic events recently. The Family Race Night was really popular and lots of fun. We watched races involving pigs, camels, horses and dogs. Everyone was very excited and the children enjoyed cheering during the races and tucking into hotdogs in the interval! Thanks to Marcel and his team for supporting the event with such enthusiasm! Also, the parents organised the busy Christmas Fayre at the beginning of December. The children contributed by singing carols and there were lots of things to do. Santa’s Grotto was especially popular! The children also enjoyed playing games, such as pin the red nose on Rudolph, and sampling the wonderful cakes on offer.

Thanks to all who attended and everyone who devoted time, energy and commitment to making these events so successful.

Thank you to all the visitors who have supported Worship this month. In particular, thanks to the Elevation team from CYM (Christian Youth Ministry) for putting on a really fun show about the real meaning of Christmas. All the children enjoyed the way the Nativity story was retold with props, a quiz and lots of humour!

An incredible amount of work went into our two Christmas productions. All the children involved had such a lot to remember: songs, dances and lots of lines! The rehearsals paid off and both the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 plays were terrific fun to watch. The Early Years performed ‘We Three Kings’ and the Key Stage 1 performance was ‘It’s a Cracker!’. Thank you to all the adults who helped the children to prepare and made costumes.

After the performances, members of the Parent Support Group sold refreshments to raise money for the school and for MND, a charity supporting sufferers of Motor Neurone Disease.

Our Christmas celebrations continued with the annual Carol Concert at St Mary’s Church. After lots of carol practices, the children sang beautifully! Well done to all the children who did readings for us and thanks to Martin for your talk – the children will all remember the meaning of the chocolate orange! The children raised money for ‘Shelterbox’, having visited the displays at the Ansell Centre about the wonderful work of this charity, which helps those in need following disasters all around the world.

Altogether they raised about £65 for Shelterbox. As always, the Carol Concert was a lovely end to the term and put everyone in a Christmas mood ready for the holiday!

It was lovely to see lots of guests at our ‘Thank You Celebration’ assembly. The children read poems and riddles, sang Christmas songs and played their recorders as a way of celebrating, and giving thanks for, all the help we get in school from volunteers, members of the community and support staff members. Afterwards, the Year 6 pupils served refreshments to our guests. Special thanks were given to Mrs Finch and Mr Warner, who are both leaving at the end of term after many years of service to the school. Thanks to you both for many years of commitment and we wish you all the best for the future.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: At the time of writing this the first night of collecting has just taken place raising £175.00 and getting the collection off to a very good start. Father Christmas saw a large number of children many of whom were already outside waiting for him as apparently his progress around the route was being monitored on facebook. We think that this is a first for the event!

CLUB MATTERS: The Special General Meeting to elect officers for Rotary year 2012/13 was held at the beginning of December and the following were elected: President- Ronald Austin, Vice-President - Glenn Abbassi, Hon Secretary- Derek Cranston, Hon Treasurer - David Stokes.

Glenn will make Club history by becoming the first lady officer ever and in 2013/14 she should go on to become the first lady President.

The Club Christmas Party was held during the second week in December and a very enjoyable evening was spent at Stoke by Nayland Club. Every member and partner who was able to travel to the event attended and experienced an excellent meal in most pleasant surroundings. A number of couples took advantage of a special overnight stay offer and enjoyed each other's company at breakfast the following morning.

SPEAKERS: There was only one opportunity to have a speaker during this period and Mike Sands, Club President, spoke about the time in his life when he ran a smallholding in Yorkshire raising initially Jacob sheep.

This was more of a hobby and the sheep which he kept were rare breeds.

He raised Jacob Sheep for about 8 years then changed to Zwartbles, a new import at the time from Holland, and he had the only flock in Yorkshire. He became a member of the Zwartbles sheep Society which had only 37 members in UK then. He started showing sheep and in due course won the overall championship at the Yorkshire Show.

He described the shepherd's year starting early Autumn with deciding make up of flock for next year, arranging breeding programme to ensure that lambs born at the right time the following Spring. Ewes monitored in December/January to ensure that they were in lamb and how many expected as this breed could produce up to 4 lambs at a time. If everything went according to plan lambing took place during April/May. Through the summer the lambs were monitored,tagged and their futures decided with surplus stock being sold for breeding or meat at 6 months and then the process starts again.

Monday to Saturday Lunchtimes: £3.95 Menu Evenings: Buy One - Get Second for £1.50 Sunday Lunch Hi I am Linda Curran-Spain, and in April this year took up position as Head Teacher of Kersey CEVCP School. For me in my first headship, the last two terms have flown by, and I am sorry that I am now only finally introducing myself to the wider community of the school. Now I have settled in, I would like everyone to know about our outstanding school, and the fantastic families I work with.

Owl Class and Badger class have had a really busy half term, which began with a fascinating Ancient Greek day in which the children had a wonderful time acting out myths, playing games and learning through role play about the Ancient Greeks and how they lived, and ended with their amazing performances in the annual nativity play “Bethlehem Baby”.

Squirrels and Hedgehogs have enjoyed learning about homes long ago and have used our beautiful village as an example of how houses were once built. Everyone really enjoyed singing songs in the school play, and the little impromptu individual acts made the audience laugh. Now the outdoor play area has been completed, and the canopy extended, thanks to the Friends of the school, the children are enjoying learning beyond the walls of the classroom, which is fantastic.

During November the school remembered those who sacrificed their life for the freedom of others, and everyone participated in Heroes Day, where we raised over £70 for the Help the Heroes Charity. In a special assembly of Remembrance led by Owl Class, we learnt about the horrors of war and the hope of the Poppy, we were joined in this assembly by families of service personnel, and Major Corcoran and Major Myers in full military dress helped Owls with the readings. Across the school, “The Big Write” is inspiring children to develop their writing skills, and to reach their personal writing targets; this is further encouraged in Miss Gurney’s after school creative writing club. Parents have commented that when they collect their children following a writing session “The boys especially can’t stop talking about what they are writing, they are so enthusiastic!” The whole school also participated in a writing focus week with other schools in the pyramid, where each child produced a book to be shared with fellow pupils at other schools. In fact writing is such a big hit here, that the School Council has organised a non-uniform day to raise funds to buy more “Big Writing” materials. We have been really fortunate this term to receive additional support from the Greys trust which has helped us restock the books in the library, from the children themselves who raised money through a sponsored read to replenish reading materials in Key Stage 2 and from the Friends of the school who purchased new reading scheme books for Key Stage 1 With all these developments we are aiming for “Big Success” in all aspects of literacy, and are now increasing our focus on numeracy, where we have recently purchased new teaching materials. This is an exciting time in the learning journeys of our whole school.

We are looking forward to the literacy and numeracy “learning with the children days” organised for next term, and to the various sports tournaments and events planned. As ever the Friends of the school have been incredibly busy in both fund raising and in spending their money on helping our school to ensure everyone not only reaches our vision of “achieving potential together” but aims beyond this too. In addition to a huge thanks to this dedicated and hard working group of parents, we would also like to thank the entire community for their support in all fund raising activities, with your help we really can make a difference!

We wish all everyone in the community and beyond a peaceful Christmas and a very happy New Year.

The charity organiser for the East Anglian Air Ambulance service, Thomas Kistruck, called into Whatfield Village Hall to receive a cheque for £500 from members of Whatfield Players, the money raised at our recent ‘Trio in Waiting’, the 3 one-act play evenings with supper in November. The Players wish to sincerely thank their very supportive loyal audiences for continuing to buy tickets and support raffles, which enables us to make regular charity donations. Plans are underway for another one-night Murder/Mystery evening on Thursday 29th March. More details will follow later on this night of entertainment which is a follow up to ‘Who Murdered The Vicar?’ the production last March.

News from Home-Start Babergh Speak to any of the staff here at Home-Start Babergh and they will all tell you that December is not only one of the busiest months, but it is also one of the most rewarding: Monday 5th was the start of our festivities as we held our Family’s Christmas Party at the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard. This year over 30 families attended and they were entertained by a Punch and Judy show. The children were also visited by Santa who was able to give each child two presents each. The surprises didn’t stop as the Trustees of the Cornard Land Charity presented a cheque for £150 towards our work at this time of year; it really was a wonderful surprise.

Monday 12th then saw the collection of our hampers from Christ Church in Ipswich, which were distributed to some of our families along with the toys from the Asda/Have a Heart Appeal. It is heart warming to know that even in these difficult times people are so generous to those in need.

Staff held a party for the schemes fantastic volunteers on Friday 16th December, an opportunity to thank them for all their hard work during the year. Finally on Tuesday 20th staff, volunteers and directors attended the Beer and Carols fundraising evening at the Washbrook Brook Inn – a fantastic night with all money raised helping the scheme to continue supporting families in need throughout Babergh.

The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at the Health Centre, in Hadleigh, was ‘highly commended’ in the rehibilitation category, at the glitzy British Health Trades Association Excellence Awards. The evening, which was held at the Guoman Tower Hotel, in London, was compered by TV journalist, presenter and newsreader, Angela Rippon OBE. The BHTA represents over 450 company members, many of which are the largest and most influential in the healthcare industry.

by Peter Finch A New Year Boost for Your Brain How are your New Year’s Resolutions? If you haven’t made any or you are having trouble keeping the ones you have made, here are some ideas that could reward you handsomely.

I’ve been looking back at some of the reports that appeared in 2011 on the subject of brain function and memory efficiency. These range from work on how best to develop the brains of young children through to ways in which older people can keep their memory and brain function at optimum level. In the process I noticed that there seemed to be a common factor that is particularly effective in helping to boost and maintain the brain’s efficiency. That common factor is physical activity!

Physical activity and exercise (along with a healthy diet of course) can work wonders for our general well-being and mental performance by enhancing the supply and delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the brain.

Physical exercise has also been shown to delay the onset of dementia.

According to the NHS Choices website “Scientists think that being active can help improve wellbeing because it brings about a sense of greater self-esteem, self-control and the ability to rise to a challenge.” Other studies show that exercise can improve functions like planning, organizing and multitasking.

A recent study in the US by the Oregon State University has confirmed that those who take regular weekly exercise sleep significantly better and are more mentally alert during the day. The sample comprised more than 2,600 men and women, aged 18-85. So if you haven’t yet made a New Year’s Resolution to take more exercise, the knowledge that exercise can boost your brain power, and help you sleep, might just be the encouragement you need.

Meditation is a less physical activity, but one that nevertheless requires the physical act of sitting still in a chair or on the floor in a comfortable position. From studying those who meditate, scientists have established that regular meditation can improve brain performance, reduce stress, boost confidence, improve creativity, improve problem solving and enhance reasoning skills. If exercise and physical activity doesn’t appeal to you, how about taking up meditation to boost your brain power?

If you are a smoker, here is a worrying fact, The French Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale analyzed data from 10,308 London-based civil servants age 35 to 55 and found that, among other things, smoking can seriously harm your memory and therefore your thinking and learning ability. However, the good news is that research carried out by Northumbria University in the UK has shown that giving up smoking can restore a smoker’s poor memory almost back to normal. To quote Dr Tom Hefferman on the research team: "This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has an impact on memory. We already know that giving up smoking has huge health benefits for the body but this study also shows how stopping smoking can have knock-on benefits for cognitive function too.'' So if you stop smoking you can have a better memory and you will learn new things faster; quite an incentive given all the other health and cost benefits.

Parents and grandparents among you might also resolve to spend more time playing with your young children, given the benefits reported by Temple University and The University of Chicago in the US. Working on studies into brain development of young children, they have both convincingly shown that physically playing with blocks and assembly games can develop a child’s abstract spatial concepts. These are regarded as important for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (known as the STEM disciplines). When children play with blocks and building toys alongside their parents or grandparents they hear words such as ‘around’, ‘over’, ‘under’,’ through’ and ‘besides’. These words are important for a child’s development of spatial ability and awareness of the world about them. Playing with building blocks and assembly toys interactively with adults can be of enormous benefit in enhancing their spatial, mental and abstract skills, all of which can equip them for a rich and full life.

Finally, it seems there is bad news for anyone with an electronic brain trainer. A number of studies show that these devices do not improve your brain power or memory any more than actually getting out of your chair and physically and mentally engaging with the world around you. Happy New Year!

Greener Hadleigh Have you made your New Year's resolutions yet? Please add some Greener Hadleigh ones. Sometimes it can seem like too much effort to make changes and stick to them, but every little helps, so please consider some of our suggestions. The media have been covering areas such as food waste and energy reduction, and more recently concerns about water shortages. If you have a garden or outside space think about having a water butt - if you already have one, why not get another whether you grow vegetables or flowers, rainwater is best and can be used for cleaning, such as cars, bicycles or paths.

Other suggestions: If you have thought of growing your own fruit and vegetables now is the time to start planning. In fact fruit trees and bushes are best planted in their dormant period, which is now, and some vegetables can be started in early spring. Buying locally grown produce is both good for the environment, by reducing transport and packaging, and supports local jobs, so even if you do not regularly do so perhaps this is the year to start.

Now more of us have reduced our plastic bag use it is time to start on plastic bottles. Instead of buying small bottles of water or juice to drink while out why not invest in a small metal or reusable plastic bottle/flask to take filtered water or juice from home, this will save you money and cut the vast amounts of plastic waste. Support local facilities and events, such as the cinema, live music, the footpath volunteers and other interest groups - this cuts transport pollution and encourages more variety. Learn a new skill - if you cannot find a class or group to join why not attempt to start one with other interested people, or ask a relative or friend to teach you. Skill swapping has become popular, so for instance learning to sew in exchange for computer advice, or gardening, or woodworking - in fact any combination to suit you.

Remember, reduce, re-use, repair, recycle.

Jerry’s Diary Now in 2012, how will our wild birds fare in the next 12 months? April will soon be here, the first summer migrants should be here from the 2nd week of April. 2011 wasn’t a very good year for Swallows, numbers were fairly low. Cuckoo, Turtle-Dove, Spotted Flycatcher, Housemartin, Nightingale, Willow Warbler and the Swift were also well down in the low numbers. Now our Finch species at the moment seem to be very low, haven’t seen any big flocks of Chaffinch, Greenfinch or Yellowfinch in any wildbird cover as yet. There has been several big flocks of Linnets and Goldfinch in many areas, I am now seeing more Bullfinch than Greenfinch in the last few months. Has the tricks disease caused these low numbers in some of the finch species? We should be seeing flocks of 200-400 birds in the wildbird and stubble cover at this time of year.

5 months have now passed with not seeing any Barn Owls in my local patch area. Little Owls have been fairly vocal, with several birds calling to each other in many areas. There have been a pair just up the road from mine, calling from the Green, opposite Aldham Road in Hadleigh. Song Thrush have been singing just before dusk.

On Nov 5th several Pink-Footed Geese were heard calling as they flew over Church Street, Hadleigh. The true Hadleigh Twitchers, Chris and Jane Upson were lucky to hear these wild geese flying over amongst the fireworks. Waxwing flocks seen in the Ipswich area from end of November.

Angel Court Residential Home Many thanks to all who came to our Christmas fete on Saturday 2nd Dec and also all the local businesses who were so generous with donations and gifts for our raffle. The children were encouraged to bring spare change into school to fill a large outline of Pudsey bear, Beaumont’s Junior Road Safety Officers this idea alone raised meeting Cheeko the bear over £100. The children also bought in their own teddies from home, which were then entered into a best dressed teddy competition. Our Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) recently organised a ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ day to promote road safety. Each child in the school dressed in bright and colourful clothes to remind them of the importance of being visible, as the mornings and evenings still continue to be so dark. During the day we also had a special visit from Cheeko the bear from Town 102FM. He met the children and gave them special reflective stickers that they could stick on their clothes and bags to help keep them visible.

The time leading up to Christmas is a wonderful time of year to be working in a primary school. At Beaumont this is no exception. Festive activities have been in full swing, with Christmas carols being practiced, seasonal plays being performed and parties being organised. The children in the younger classes, Squirrels and Penguins put on a fabulous performance of ‘A Night before Christmas’. The acting and singing were marvellous, and it was great to see all the children enjoying their different roles in the play. The Rhinos class did their bit in spreading the Christmas cheer by performing for the residents at Angel Court and for the first time Waterfield Court in Hadleigh. This event is enjoyed by both the children and the residents alike, especially as the children were rewarded for their efforts with a gift, a drink and a lollipop before they left!

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Layham Parish Council The main matters discussed in the Parish Council meeting of 30 November were: • Further information is to be sought about the possible installation of a defibrillator in one of the unused telephone boxes; • It was agreed to accept the kind offer of Mrs Pat Alderson to replace the broken seat by the river in Brett Green with one made in remembrance of her husband some years ago; • Two members of the public attended the meeting and expressed the wish that the remnants of hedge be retained along the Old Orchard boundary with the pavement. Enquiries will be made with Babergh District Council to see if their contractors would be able to cut the hedge line regularly if it were thickened up by interplanting with the existing growth; • It was confirmed that the seat in memory of Col. Hitchcock had been adopted by the Parish Council and that the cost of repairs should therefore be met from the public purse; • Three more grit bins are to be purchased – one to be placed at the recycling centre, the second on the hill at Rands Road and the third on the hill out of Water Lane; • Hadleigh Town Council has purchased a speed gun and invited our Council to subscribe to its use. The Clerk will make further enquiries about the proposed arrangement; • The proposed budget for 2012-13 was adopted. The amount to be raised from the parish will remain at £8,500; • SALC will remain as the internal auditors for the next year; • It was noted that 21 parishioners had taken the opportunity to talk with councillors at a drop-in session in the village hall and make their views known on the proposed National Grid pylon line across the Parish; • The Chairman gave a short report on the role of the Tree Warden and outlined his intentions for the next year; • It was agreed to seek guidance on the possibility of carrying out another Parish Plan exercise during the next Council year; • Councillors agreed to support the bid being made by the residents of 7 and 8 Upper Street for SCC to surface the area of rough ground in front of their properties; • Babergh District Council is being asked to give advice on responsibility for the drains in Brett Green following an enquiry by a resident; • Christmas cards, containing thank you messages, are to be sent to several members of the community who assist the Parish Council in various ways during the year.

It all started in 2010 when the PCC unexpectedly received an unrestricted donation of £1000 sent by Eileen Wood in remembrance of happy times she and her husband Michael had spent in the area. What did St Andrew’s need? It appeared it did not have its own red chasuble or purple altar cloth.

Colour has great significance in the Church of England calendar. Red is the colour for Holy Week, Pentecost and the week before Advent and purple is the colour for Advent and Lent. The red chasuble was soon purchased and the idea was borne that perhaps it would be a wonderful project to make our own altar cloth. The churchwardens, Sonia Groom and Audrey King, began their search for suitable materials and finally found some purple St Nicholas Damask.

It was realised, after purchasing the cloth and lining, that the money available would not quite stretch to include the braids etc needed for the project. There was still some money on hold which had been given in memory of Evelyn Leach. Daphne Parsons and her family felt this would be a project close to Evelyn's heart so this was used to make up the shortfall. Daphne felt privileged to be asked to help with the sewing so Sonia, Audrey and Daphne (from left to right in the photograph) set about transforming the gorgeous material into a fitted altar cloth which will be used, and admired, for many years to come.

Filing cabinet for archivist Our appeal in last month’s Letter from Layham resulted in Mrs Dorothy Claireaux contacting Ian Gooding offering a four drawer filing cabinet in which we can store the village archives. A big thank you to Dorothy Claireaux.

This picture of a group of country men (and a lad) was found among the effects of the late Fred Byham. Fred worked on farms in Layham all his working life and also had relatives in Raydon. This group could be of beaters at a shoot and would probably have been taken on a farm in Raydon or Layham. If you can help us confirm anything about the picture please contact Dee Byham on 01473 823277 Layham Playing Field 100 Club The winners of the November draw were: £15 Ticket No 5 Parker £10 Ticket No 72 Webber Confirmation of otters around the River Brett in Layham Ron Gunn found this sad sight by the roadside as he walked into Hadleigh recently. A fully grown otter had tried to cross the road and had been hit by a vehicle. It was probably moving between the river and the small lake in the grounds of Priory Hall.

Ron has also recently seen a pair of otters playing in the water of the mill pond around 9am, confirming David Pearce’s observations of otters running across the grass of his garden (the Mill House), the experience of members of the Parish Council returning from a meeting in the village hall who have heard animals whistling on the river around the mill and confirmation by members of the Playing Field Committee that otters have been using the holt built by volunteers on the bank of the river. Whilst it is sad to have confirmation of the presence of otters through a death it is also good to know that they are here after many years of absence. In R.W.Hitchcock’s book “Rowley” there is a record of otters in the millpond in the 1930s: “Otters too, regularly used the river and it was of great interest to watch them fishing in the mill pool at dusk and eating their catch on the bank. It was interesting that on three occasions we had lone women tapping on our front door to ask if I could help them. They wanted to cross the foot bridge over the river on their way home but were ‘frightened of the boys who were whistling’! It was in fact the otters whistling to each other and I was able to re-assure the timid ladies and accompany them across the bridge!”

“9.15am and I was just cleaning my teeth in my bathroom preparatory to coming down when there was a most horrific noise and I saw from my bathroom window Mrs Welham’s roof falling down. I hurried downstairs.... and told Victoria to keep downstairs in case it happened again. But she had the foreknowledge that my bedroom was the worse for wear and went forthwith and looked there. Though it was very cold I went round the house to assure myself it was still standing.

Honestly I felt a bit shaken from the noise and had a headache. Victoria came downstairs full of excitement saying there was a large hole in my bedroom ceiling....Then I saw crowds of people collecting in the road. I had rung up the Police and Aldous the builders (from East Bergholt) to come and mend my hole and replace my broken windows but he would not help me at all. The first person who knocked and came in was Cedric (Cedric Morris of Benton End)....because he knew that I should feel devastated by this blast of the enemy. However, when I was out in the crowd I became a gay as everyone and very interested. There was an enormous very plain American who seemed to be in charge and we went together to Mr Girling who was so nice and enlightening. I took the American to see my roof. They fetched the steps and clambered up to look in the attics but they could not find anything. They noticed the electric wire was bust and said that must be mended at once. So as electricians had been working on the pole in front of the house I went and asked a little man to help me. He came at once, quickly did the job and found the treasure – two sparking plugs attached to aluminium.... A (local) Englishman could find it but a large official American could not! It was finally decided to be a rocket or something new from Germany that had exploded in the air.

6 January 1945 Cedric and I went to see Mrs Welham.... She was delighted to see us and to show us her piece of rocket.

She said “go upstairs please.” So we climbed up the....steps that are called going upstairs in an old cottage. There were two.... rooms so small with the slope of the tiles for ceiling. One room had two beds and across them lay a huge ring of steel and above it was the morning sky. It was said the beds had saved her for she was downstairs.”

Whilst there is no known official record of this event, a member of a local family was told by his late uncle, that the “rocket” which fell on Layham was the remains of a V1 rocket, or “doodlebug”. Thousands of these flying bombs were used against London and the east of England between June 1944 and March 1945. There is a record from the American airfield in Raydon of nine such bombs passing over the base during those months.

7 January 1945 “The miraculous and happy side of our rocket is that it hurt no-one – yet a greater mass of hard things falling cannot be imagined. The larger part of the rocket, the end of the case, fell in the back yards of three cottages 20 yards from here. I have had pleasant social days since with friends coming to assure themselves that I yet lived! Young Richard came today.

He was full of delighted excitement. I went with him to see the chief treasure. The number of people who, since January 5 have walked through the cottage gardens has risen to hundreds – I suggested to Mrs Hopes that she should station her grandchild at her gate charging 6d a head!

A level-headed person cannot but be horrified at the nearness of the beastly thing to one cottage. It had made a large crater which touches the wall – and in that cottage live a young couple with two little boys and an old lady of 75. The noise must have been tremendous. The blast went as the thing lay with its horrible mouth wide open across the marshes and broke windows in the Rectory a mile away on the further hill. Mr Gleed, a workman, was telling me how badly Mrs Stiff’s vast greenhouses (which) stand behind her house – the red suburban villa on the corner going to Hadleigh (Brett House at the top of Mill Lane), have suffered. Half of the whole long glass houses are open to the snow. He said they were all at work in the houses and it seemed to be raining glass. They grow tomatoes and early vegetables.

8 January 1945 We have had a new government builder who has already put slates on our roof and has agreed also to mend my ceiling tomorrow. Isn’t that wonderfully soon!”

Layham Playgroup Father Christmas Flies in!

The children had a surprise visitor to Playgroup this week. We all eagerly gathered outside in our garden and heard a rather loud noise coming from the sky. Looking up, we saw a big yellow helicopter with Father Christmas waving out the door at us! He landed in the field and brought over a big sack of presents, and a letter to all the children in reply for all their letters. The children were all thrilled with the whole experience and loved telling their families all about it. A big thank you to the RAF and to Jenna for organising the special day, and to Mr English for kindly allowing the helicopter to land in his field.

The children have also been busy celebrating Christmas in Playgroup, making cards and decorations and reading and retelling the Christmas Story. The Forrester’s Friendly Society kindly donated some money which we used to purchase a Nativity Set and some ‘people who ‘help us’ puppets, which have been put to good use. Many thanks! Our festivities will cumulate with our Christmas party at Birch Farm, where lots of fun activities will be enjoyed by everyone. We also look forward to welcoming some new faces in January.

Children and adults all enjoyed browsing the range of stalls, visiting Santa and tasting some wonderful refreshments. LAIS1332 NEIGHBOURHOOD PLANNING REGULATIONS Councillor Miss Cook had provided members with details of the symposium she had attended and outlined the work involved in producing a Town Plan. It was agreed that a budget bid of £20,000 be allocated to this work. The Clerk was asked to obtain printing costs and details of planning courses at local Universities with a view to providing work experience for a student studying this subject. A letter would be sent to Babergh District Council’s Chief Executive and Planning Officer requesting a meeting to discuss this subject. It was agreed that a working party consisting of Councillors Mrs Byrne, Miss Cook, Mrs Angland, Lazenby and Matthews would work on this project. Councillors thanked Councillor Miss Cook for attending the symposium in London and providing the in depth report.

ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS Councillor Miss Cook reported that there was no representative from the Planning Committee on the Finance & Personnel Committee. As a significant amount of expenditure would be required for the Neighbourhood Plan it was agreed that in May 2012 a Planning Committee representative would be included on the Finance & Personnel Committee. Councillor Sheldrick asked if there was any action that could be taken if a property has been left to stand empty and decay. He was advised to contact the Enforcement Officer at Babergh District Council who had powers to deal with these concerns.

Mayor’s Communication Remembrance Day The Mayor reported that she had attended the Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance and was pleased to see that it was very well attended.

Finance & Personnel Report The Clerk reported that, following enquiries, monies obtained through parking fines could not be retained by the local authorities.

Environment & General Purposes Committee Regarding the Speedwatch Scheme it was reported that other parishes had been contacted advising them of the charge to join the Hadleigh Scheme and had made contact with Councillor Sheldrick.

Budget Challenge The Mayor had sent a letter to Suffolk County Council outlining the Council’s views. An acknowledgement had been received.

Councillor Lazenby wished to record his thanks for an excellent communication.

Franey, Rand and Pest House Charity Councillor Matthews advised that Mrs. Legge was pleased to be re-appointed as a Trustee for this Charity.

Town Matters The Mayor reported that a letter had been sent to the local businessman concerned about the number of hairdressers in the town advising him that Hadleigh Town Council were unable to help in this instance.

Councillor Amin arrived.

POLICING PC Paisley presented the Police Report for October and it was noted that 25 crimes had been recorded during the months. The offences comprised as follows: 10 thefts; 4 burglaries; 3 harassments; 2 driving with excess alcohol; 2 criminal damage; 1 possession of class B drugs; 1 fear of violence; 1 fraud and 1 assault. Of these crimes 3 had been detected.

PC Paisley reported an increase of thefts of bicycles and catalytic converters and the first session of the Speedwatch Scheme had taken place.

PC Paisley advised that there would soon be fifteen police officers (three officers working per shift) based at Hadleigh Police Station. They would be managed from Sudbury and Inspector Crick would be in charge of all police in the Babergh area. He reported that despite budget cuts across the board Suffolk would be well covered and frontline policing would not be affected. He requested that the public should now dial 101 to report non-emergency incidents.

REPORT OF THE DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Councillors Mrs Grandon, Mrs. Munson and Riley had provided written reports. In Councillor Riley’s report he had provided information on the Department of Culture, Media & Sport who wish to deregulate Schedule One of the Licencing Act 2003. If this were allowed it would mean that there would be no curfew on events, no limitation on noise and the possibility that the Council and the Police would receive no prior notice of events. The implications of this would be of great concern to the Town and it was agreed that a letter be sent to the Department of Culture, Media & Sports pointing out the concerns raised. PC Paisley advised that he was unaware of these changes. Councillor Grandon’s report included that Tesco have to submit their decision on how they wish to proceed with their application by the beginning of January 2012. Councillor Mrs. Munson reported that she had attended a meeting regarding changes to PCT’s - further information on this matter was available in the office. Councillor Grutchfield reported that he had attended the official start of the building of the Leisure Centre along with a number of Town Councillors. He would be attending a scrutiny meeting to discuss the budget challenge and had attended a meeting which had discussed pensions, sale of assets and changes to personnel.

REPORT OF THE COUNTY COUNCILLOR Councillor Grutchfield reported that he had attended a meeting on the pylons. There would be a Scrutiny panel meeting in December which would discuss possible savings. The biggest reductions are likely to be made in social care.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor reported a letter received from Mrs Diane Hunt, one of the Lord Lieutenant’s Deputies who had attended the Royal British Legion Remembrance Day Service on his behalf, saying how pleased she was to have attended such a well-supported event.

STANDING ORDER NO. 24 Councillor Lazenby asked the Clerk to contact Sudbury Town Council regarding the matter of bestowing the term of Freeman in respect of long service.

Councillor Miss Nevard asked the Clerk to investigate providing Councillors with name badges for their term in office to be used when attending events.

The Mayor left the room and the Chair was taken by Councillor Mrs Mary Munson, Deputy Town Mayor for the next item.

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to ÂŁ17,993.58 be approved for payment. The Mayor took the Chair.

PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 27th October 2011 were noted. It was reported that the Paint Ball Application had been approved by Babergh District Council and that Layham Parish Council had not been informed of this application.

SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 10th November 2011 was received and accepted.

BUDGET BIDS Members were asked for final budget bids. The Town Clerk would be asked to review the financing of purchasing further land at Layham Road Sports Ground and the Cemetery.

SHORT TERM PARKING CHARGES This item had been raised at the last Town Council Meeting following recent press releases some of which were read out at this meeting. The statements made that Hadleigh would be joining forces with Sudbury were refuted as no contact had ever been made by Sudbury Town Council. The Clerk had contacted Babergh District Council and been advised that short term parking charges had been put forward as an income for consideration as they are every year and will be discussed along with all other items. It was agreed that letters be sent to Babergh District Council advising them of Hadleigh Town Council’s opposition to the idea of short term parking charges and to Sudbury Town Council advising them that Hadleigh Town Council have never discussed working with them on this matter.

RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OFF LADY LANE The Clerk provided the proposed names: Ellen Aldous Avenue, Matilda Groome Road, Mary Clarke Close, Alice Parkins Close, Sarah Rand Road, Ann Strutt Close, Emma Girling Close which were unanimously agreed. The Clerk was asked to include Margaret (Peggy) Crabtree and Sgt. Sharon Elliott for future consideration.

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE TENDERS Councillors Mrs Byrne and Lazenby were in attendance at the opening of the tenders on 29th July 2011. Six tenders had been received by the closing date. It was recommended that Mortimer Contractors be given the work at a cost of ÂŁ17,539.00.

SALC AGM Councillor Haylock provided Councillors with a verbal report following her attendance at this meeting.

TOWN CREST The Mayor reported an e.mail received from the Hadleigh Craft Group requesting permission to use the Town Crest on a pennant to be presented to an Olympic athlete in 2012. Their request was unanimously agreed. The Mayor reported that the last recorded official request for the use of the Town Crest had been received in 1994 and asked that, through the minutes appearing in the Community News, all groups and individuals be reminded that use of the Hadleigh Town Crest must be approved by Hadleigh Town Council.

TOWN MATTERS The matter of street lighting being turned off had been discussed by the Environment & General Purposes Committee. They had concluded that Hadleigh would not lose much street lighting due to exemption areas. The Clerk had obtained a map from Suffolk County Council which showed that all street lighting in Hadleigh would be turned off in January 2012 between 12 midnight and 5.30am apart from dimmed lighting on Magdalen Road, by the new Fire Station and Lady Lane Industrial Area. The Clerk was asked to write a letter to Suffolk County Council requesting that exempt areas be reconsidered and concerns about how many street lights would be turned off under this scheme. Councillor Grutchfield advised that pilot schemes had already started and it would be interesting to know how this was proceeding and if any complaints had been received.

Autumn Term Time seems to move very quickly and it’s hard to believe that we have already completed the Autumn Term of this year. As you will be aware, pupils have been very busy throughout this term and I thought it would be useful to reflect on what they have achieved and enjoyed in the last 3 months.

• We started the year with the good news that our pupils’ GCSE results were well above the national figures with the largest number of pupils in the school’s history achieving 5 or more A*/A grades in the summer GCSE results.

• Year 7 have settled into Hadleigh extremely well and are making excellent progress, with many already contributing to our extra-curricular activities.

• Our pupils made a fantastic effort in undertaking our biennial sponsored walk in fancy dress raising nearly £10k.

• Over 50% of our pupils volunteered to attend and showcase our work at the very well attended Open Evening for Years 5 and 6 pupils. Many parents commented on the excellent manners and high levels of confidence our pupils displayed throughout the evening.

• Our current Year 11 pupils attended the highly successful Year 11-12 evening where pupils identified courses, institutions and apprenticeship routes which they intend to follow after taking their examinations this summer. Feedback from the colleges and employers was again overwhelmingly positive regarding our pupils’ engagement and confidence.

• Our pupils fully benefitted from the range of learning experiences offered during our Autumn Enrichment Day working as teams to achieve a range of challenges which encourage them to become more independent learners with the skills and confidence to work successfully with others.

• Pupils enjoyed the opportunity to meet the well known author, Malcolm Rose, who visited the school to meet them and share his experiences of being a writer.

• Very large numbers of pupils have been participating in the very wide range of extra-curricular activities which have been provided at lunchtimes and after school. Some of our pupils are now offering activities to other pupils with the support of staff, developing their leadership skills.

• Over 20% of our pupils are currently taking an active leadership role within our school, contributing further to our positive ethos.

• Pupils have been working extremely hard which has resulted in several hundred Headteacher’s Merits being awarded in just one term!

• Our older pupils have supported staff in delivering some very well received Science Days for Year 5 and 6 pupils in our local primary schools.

• Many of our pupils have participated in a range of community activities – singing or playing music for these events.

• We have also had an exceedingly high number of pupils offering to perform in front of large audiences during our very enjoyable school Christmas concert and end of term assembly showing high levels of self control and confidence.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish all pupils, their families and members of our local community an enjoyable seasonal break.

ShelterBox Foundation Hadleigh High School has teamed up with ShelterBox to raise money through fundraising. ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and life saving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters, at the time when they need it most. The goal is to help 50,000 families every year. In the 11 years since ShelterBox was founded, they have responded to almost 200 natural or manmade disasters in over 75 different countries providing aid for well over one million people.

Fundraising Throughout the year pupils along with teachers have been working on raising money for various charities all over the world. This week alone (starting 12th December) we have been organising numerous fundraising events. At lunch times there is a game of “guitar hero” being played which costs a small amount to enter; karaoke is also taking place at the same time. The ‘Christmas card appeal’ is also running at lunch and break times, where you can pay the small amount of 50p to sign your name on the banner. The form group 10I have also set up a small fete to raise money; there are various activities to do along with a cake sale which we hope will be very popular. On Thursday 15th of December there is a non-uniform day where people pay 50p-£2 to wear what they want for a day. There is the possibility that there will be busking taking place in the canteen on Friday the 16th December to also raise money.

Christmas Concert As many of you are aware Hadleigh High school have an annual Christmas Concert, this year’s was full to the brim with musical talent!

“The concert was a huge success and was a really nice opportunity for people to work together” This was a comment from one of the two wonderful music teachers here at Hadleigh High (Miss Staples). The cast of next year’s production of ‘We Will Rock You’ also performed a marvellous excerpt from the play, which we hope will interest more people to come and watch the play which will be performed in February of 2012.

On Tuesday 29th of November the school was alive with the sound of music. Overall the concert was performed to a very high professional standard and we hope many more concerts of this quality will be held in years to come.

Radio Day On Tuesday 6th December several students in Year 9 & 10 participated in the Radio Day. This was an opportunity for students to experience the realistic views of a real live radio show. The students spent the day learning all the ropes of managing a real radio show and then doing a live broadcast to the whole school. One of the participants, Adam Earl in Year 10 said, “It was very enjoyable. The best bit for me was performing it live.

I would definitely do it again; it gave me some good experience.” Some other students claim it gave them more confidence in speaking, and that it was really realistic and challenging; the best enrichment activity ever.

Mr Green, organiser of the day, says that after the success of the day, he is hoping that this may be continued with the school’s very own radio show with help from benefactors’ donations. A big thank you to Euro Speed Tyre & Garage for sponsoring and making this all possible.

Library News On the 25th November, the Library welcomed Malcolm Rose, author of the popular Jordan Stryker and Traces series, to speak to selected Year 7 & 8 pupils. Malcolm’s books are primarily thrillers with a strong science element running through them. Malcolm spoke to the pupils about the ideas behind his new Jordan Stryker series, and how new technologies are making the idea of bionic humans a real possibility. Malcolm showed the pupils real footage of how bionic science is being used to help people who needed artificial limbs and organs. His imagination took this one stage further to create the essential character Jordan Stryker: bionic agent. The highlight of the visit was a working bionic arm that Malcolm had brought in. It was borrowed from a university and will eventually be used on a person who needs it. The pupils were fascinated at seeing it work and a lucky few were able to shake hands with it. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the visit and were interested to learn that someone with a factual scientific background could use that knowledge, add some imagination and write a book.

Carrot and Coriander Soup Ingredients 1kg carrots 1 large onion 2 vegetable stock cubes (I use the Knorr stockpots) 1 litre of water Freshly ground black pepper Handful of fresh coriander Method: Dissolve the stock cubes in boiling water Chop onions and carrots and boil for 15 minutes Add a good pinch of the pepper Chop the coriander and add Blend with a hand blender or in a mixer Heat through before serving.

Quick Vegetable Soup 1 leek 1 stick celery 1 cabbage 2 carrots 1 turnip Vegetable stock cube 1 tin chopped tomatoes 1 tsp salt Method: Chop all the vegetables into small slices.

Place in saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil, add stock cube and tomatoes. Simmer for approximately 25 minutes, season to taste

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre I awaken from my shut down to the dawning of a New Year; 2012! I wonder what awaits us during the course of this special year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics? If you had read my December Blog perhaps your first question might be – Was there or wasn’t there: a real baby to take the part of Baby Jesus during The Shelley Centre Carol Service? I’m delighted to say that my spies at the service reported back that baby Otto, all of six weeks old, took this important role and by his presence completed the magic of the most wonderful carol service of the year, anywhere: not that I’m biased in any way!

Attempting a head count from my room, I estimate that over 150 people attended, and I know from my usual ear wigging that others were disappointed at not being able to get a place in the Church. Well, during my spare time over Christmas, whilst Lyn’s attention was diverted, I was able to cast my eye over the Web and came across a reference to ‘War Horse’: a book, successful play, and now what will probably be a blockbuster film. As part of the story a horse becomes trapped by wire in no-mans-land during the carnage of World War I and two men set out to the rescue. They succeed, and having agreed ownership, depart to their respective stations. The important issue is that one is German and the other British – sworn enemies in this conflict – yet both men set aside their differences for the sake of the horse. This made me think of my hairy hoofed friends here at The Centre: no, we’re not at war but, this war was one of the tragedies of history that helped bring the RDA into existence, with a far sighted individual linking the benefits of horse riding and being around horses with the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers from the conflict (If you visit our Web site the origins of the RDA are explained in greater detail). However, even today, at The Shelley Centre The Herd, who themselves come from varying backgrounds, maybe having been eventers, hacks, or simply loving companions, bring together a diversity of people, where status or politics takes second place, with the purpose of helping other people who are disadvantaged either by birth or life changing accidents to enjoy a better quality of life, and diversion from their otherwise regular routines. In my past Blogs I have given real life insight into individual Riders or Helpers, and about what benefit the Riders gain from coming to The Centre, and in the case of Helpers, why they choose to volunteer. I am unable to illustrate such case studies for The Herd – they’re a bit reticent when it comes to talking about their past but, returning to ‘War Horse’ it is evident to me that the power of the horse is a major influence binding The Shelley Centre; Herd, Rider and Helper alike, just as it bound two enemies those many years ago……

We now have the bars open and the intention is that the kitchen will be open in February. Holon Integrated Health Care “Illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue.

They are developed from small daily sins against nature. When enough sins have accumulated, illness will suddenly appear.” The New Year is always replete with resolutions and good intentions, most of which fall by the wayside rather rapidly. The quote above attributed to Hippocrates is as valid in 2012 as it was roughly two and half thousand years ago.

Hippocrates is telling us to be mindful of the little things we do often; daily patterns of behaviour and habit have a greater impact on long-term health than faddy diets, or unused gym memberships. The body is a highly complex system, an analogy could be the global economy. Highly complex systems are good at soaking up lots of small insults and making constant course corrections. However there will come a point when any system’s capacity for repair is exhausted. When a complex system fails, it tends to do so rapidly, spectacularly and with little or no prior warning. In economics this is called ‘recession’, in biology, this is called ‘disease’.

So the maintenance of healthy systems should be our central concern, and that is far easier to achieve when one is aware of and able to avoid things that are toxic and damaging. However, our society conditions us with expectations as to what is permissible, desirable, natural etc. When these stand in contrast to our biological, genetic and evolutionary heritage we have a problem. As with the feckless King Cnut trying to turn back the tide, we can stand obstinately in the face of our biological reality and believe what we wish but that will not alter the facts of a situation.

In terms of personal health, most people cart around a mixture of opinion, half truth and myth picked up over the years from family, school and the media. Far from being a condemnation, this is an observation of a tragic reality and deserves our best efforts in its redress. When one understands that these unchallenged assumptions drive behaviour it becomes obvious that sound life choices are made on the basis of good information.

This is why in addition to providing excellent health care options when something has gone awry we are committed to providing education on and around the topic of health. This year we will be launching a Community Interest Company (CIC) with a mission to raise awareness on matters relating to personal and environmental health (you cannot have one without the other).

It is also useful to know what the options are in relation to maintenance of health and its restoration if the need arises. The unfortunate fact is the central concerns of the NHS are hamstrung by economic and political constraints which limits its flexibly and choice to the end user. I recently finished training in a modality called Biopuncture. This has been used extensively by clinicians from many disciplines in Germany for over 50 years, and it is estimated that somewhere in the region of 100,000,000 treatments are delivered each year. However, it is almost unknown in the UK, not because of a lack of efficacy or validity, in fact there is evidence aplenty as to its usefulness and almost total absence of undesirable ‘side’ effects.

Other options available at Holon include; Health screenings using a state of the art biofeedback device, extremely useful in identifying those factors that are there in the background negatively affecting your health; mixed modal bodywork therapy, myofascial acupuncture, and Pilates.

Pause for Thought Here we are at the beginning of 2012. As we look forward we wonder what this year will have in store for us. As we step back to the same time last year what did we see - unrest in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria.

Nearer to home we had the riots in London which spread to other major cities. As I think of the riots we must spare a thought for those who suffered earthquakes. These happened in New Zealand, Japan and more recently in Turkey. These events caused this nation and the world great distress. We enter this year with no guarantee of peace or security in what are changing times, and we need to turn to God through Jesus Christ.

Where are they now?

Keith Brown As a reasonably proud Dad I thought readers would like to hear about a Hadleigh born and bred chap who left Hadleigh High School in 1994.

My son Keith joined the Navy and left after 6 years diving with the bomb squad. He then joined the Hertfordshire Fire Service (no vacancies in Suffolk at the time!) based at Royston where he now lives.

During his teenage years he was a member of the Hadleigh Swimming Club which presented him with a wonderful opportunity to get a super gift. The years have passed and i’m pleased to add that Keith, now an old man of 33, has just completed the New York Marathon with five other Royston firefighters raising £17,000 for charity. On November 6th 2011 he completed the 26.2 mile course in 5544th position out of approx 44,000 finishers. His time was a credible 3 hours 30 minutes and he wishes to thank the Hadleigh people who sponsored him. I also understand that another ex-Hadleigh boy who used to swim for Hadleigh Swimming Club and who joined the London Fire Service is Mr December in the National Firefighter Calendar!!

It’s along the Railway walk!

The Ferns They’ve been around for millions of years and were involved in the formation of coal deposits; they were certainly here in the times of the dinosaurs. In those times they grew as tall as modern trees, but now there are only a few left that ascend more than few metres - and none of those native to the UK I’ve found three different varieties of along the Railway each with its own characteristics. They all have one feature in common – they don’t have any flowers but reproduce by releasing vast (Millions) of quantities microscopic spores (think of them as seeds smaller than dust) into the atmosphere during the autumn from small “blisters” (Sori) formed on the under surface of their leaves (See photo). When the spores are ripe the surface film of these “blisters” (the indusium) dries, shrinks and ruptures, releasing the spores within. The shape of these “blisters” varies with each species which is one way of identifying them. Just turn a fern’s leaf upsidedown during the early autumn and you’ll see the rows of “blisters”.

What’s the difference between the Ferns along the Railway Walk?

Bracken (pteridium aquilinum) This is the most common; it favours sandy soil, living mainly in the form of underground root “mats” (rhizomes) which can spread unseen across large areas. It is said that a single plant can weigh several tons and cover many acres (if you’ve got the patience to dig it all up). It is perfectly adapted to life on open heathlands protecting its self from grazing animals with mildly poisonous organic chemicals (Ptaquiloside and Cyanide) which makes the whole plant unpalatable. The poisons do not affect humans or animals greatly in small quantities, but a large or prolonged dosage causes cancer. During the winter it dies-back (is deciduous), and the dried stems and leaves fall to form an almost frost-proof protection for the growing tips just below ground. If the dry material does catch fire it burns readily, destroying any competitors that may have started growing.

Fires occurring during the growing season are not a problem either, because the undamaged roots readily send up new growths before the competition has recovered.

Male Ferns (Dryopteris filis-mas) This plant is a typical Fern! The new leaves appear as tightly rolled “Crooks’ (crosiers) just above the crowns in the spring and literally “un-furl” to become adult leaves. In the past the roots have been used as medicine to combat infestations of tapeworms. These particularly debilitating parasites can grow to several metres in length and live for long periods in the intestines of humans. We usually catch them by eating the live larval (maggot) stage that can be present in uncooked meats.

Hart’s Tongue Ferns (Asplenium scolopendrium) This gets its name from its likeness to the tongue of a deer. (The “ye-olde” name for a deer was “Harte”) It grows as individual plants and - because they prefer limestone-cave country - I’ve only found one patch along the Railway.

Oddly, the plant prefers to grow in very low-light situations and can often be found growing inside wells and deep inside caves.

In the past an infusion was used to treat complaints of the liver and spleen. It was also crushed and used in a “salve” (Cream) to treat burns, scalds and eye infections. I don’t know that I’d like to put it into my eyes, but if that’s the only hope you’ve got of warding-off blindness, I guess you put your fears aside!

Insecurities can lead to burglaries Suffolk Police is reminding people in Babergh to lock their doors and windows following a spate of burglaries in the area. Since the beginning of May there have been 20 house burglaries due to insecurities. Many of the burglaries could have been prevented if a few simple steps to secure the property had been made. Police are urging all homeowners to take simple precautions in order to minimise the chances of homes being targeted.

Verity Line Suffolk Police Crime Reduction Officer for the Babergh district said: “By leaving your home unlocked – during the day or night – and not checking your car is locked you make life easy for criminals. Breaking into a home or car often creates noise, usually takes longer and carries the risk of injury to the offender. It also increases the chances of them being caught, either in the act or through forensic traces.

“There seems to be a sense, particularly in rural areas of the county but often in our towns too, that there is no need to lock vehicles or homes.

While in some respects it’s pleasing to see that people feel safe enough to leave their vehicles and homes unlocked, the reality is that we are making it very easy for criminals to steal our personal possessions.

“The misery and distress caused by burglars cannot be under-estimated.

We are committed to finding those responsible and putting them before the courts. “Locking doors and windows is just one of the simple steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of being targeted by opportunist burglars and thieves.“ Other things you can do include: • Record serial numbers of valuable items and take photographs of them.

This helps police to identify the items if they are recovered and can help prove cases of burglary, theft and handling stolen goods.

• Property mark your postcode onto all valuable items with a permanent marker, UV pen or with a property marking solution from companies such as Smartwater, SelectaDNA or Crimestoppers – digital cameras, videos, DVDs, camcorders, mobile phones, etc, can all be marked in this way.

• With the dark nights approaching make it look as though someone is home. Put your lights on timers, put a radio on a talk station – both can make it appear as though more than one person is home and therefore makes your home a less appealing prospect for a burglar.

• Remember to lock all outbuildings. Shed alarms, along with property marking pens, can be purchased quite cheaply from all police stations and can provide a highly audible warning that can alert you to any breakin and make it uncomfortable for the burglar to continue.

• Consider installing obvious security measures – CCTV, alarms, security lighting can be effective deterrents and don’t have to cost a fortune.

Anyone who would like more advice on protecting their home, vehicle and other property can contact their local Crime Reduction Officer at Suffolk Police by calling 101.

Police are also asking that you call if you see anyone acting suspiciously.

The Thing (15, 102mins, Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.) Twenty-nine years after John Carpenter’s classic The Thing shocked audiences with its amazing special effects make-up and use of prosthetics, the time has come for yet another twenty-first century horror remake. Where this film differs however is that it is more of a prequel, rather than a remake, however it does borrow a number of memorable scenes from the 1982 film.

This remake/prequel comes after a number of below par reboots, including the forever popular Halloween franchise as well as the frightful A Nightmare on Elm Street series. The problem with these remakes is that they rely far too heavily on excessive violence and, in doing so, sacrifice far more creative elements, such as suspense. The Thing 2011 doesn’t make the same mistake, mainly because it honours the 1982 version’s graphic gore whilst combining it with some exciting new elements.

The cast for this version is headed by American actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who stars alongside a number of talented actors from across the globe. To go with the well balanced cast is a strong plot, which originally comes from the short story Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell. Campbell’s novella has already been used twice for film adaptations; firstly by Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby in the 1951 The Thing from Another World, then in 1982 by John Carpenter.

The film starts strongly, and builds the tension well, up to the point where The Thing escapes. After this point, the film lets itself down by continually showing the creature on screen, thus killing the tension.

Carpenter’s version was careful to keep on-screen viewings of the creature to a minimum; this meant that the make-up effects had a huge impact on the audience because they were fairly uncommon. In the 2011 version, the audience gets used to seeing the creature parading around onscreen. On a positive note, the setting is used to maximum effect with a real sense of isolation kept throughout. This, added to the use of the classic theme music from 1982, keeps the audience on their toes.

Although the visual effects don’t stand up against the prosthetics from 1982, The Thing 2011 certainly does enough to entertain whilst quietly paying tribute to Carpenter’s version.

Personal Judgement: A decent, if not memorable, prequel that looks good and uses music, visuals and editing to great effect.

Hadleighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Armchair Players raised a total of ÂŁ980.37 for BBCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Children in Need. We would like to thank all those who gave so generously to the street collection in Hadleigh and to all members and friends who attended the special evening event on the campaignâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behalf. Happy New Year.

Make sure your christmas tree is still green long after the festive season!

Residents will be able to make good use of all those unwanted real Christmas trees after the holiday period with Babergh District and Mid Suffolk District Council’s tree recycling scheme. At the moment there are more than 40 drop-off points within the districts where people can leave their old fir trees and they will then be collected for composting.

There will be marked-off areas in the places listed below for people to leave the trees – with decorations completely removed. Babergh and Mid Suffolk have arranged for the trees to be collected at the same time recycling teams will be in the area. If more points become available in the coming weeks, details will be posted on the Council’s websites.

The collected trees will be taken, chipped and then composted before being used as a soil conditioner so that other plants and trees can thrive.

The tree collection points are part of a package of recycling initiatives which Babergh and MSDC urged people to take part in to make this Christmas as green as possible.

A spicy aroma greeted members and friends of the Flower Club on Tuesday 13th December, as they entered Whatfield’s beautifully refurbished Village Hall (why isn’t there a facility like this in Hadleigh?). A spicy drink was offered then seats were found, the Christmas Open meeting would soon be starting. There was just time to purchase some of the tantilising floral accessories from the stall at the back of the room, run by Sarah and Jayne who anticipate what will be the next must have in in the floral world. Now the raffle tickets, must be in with a chance to take home one of the wonderful displays that will soon be created.

The audience of approximately one hundred and twenty welcomed Dulcie Lofting who had travelled from King’s Lynn to demonstrate “The Spirit on Christmas”.

A traditional start with seasonal foliage, red carnations, fir cones and red candles. Then something very different with flocked purple sticks and glittered artifical ferns, natural foliage and purple orchids, sounds bazaar but looked great. Dulcie kept ringing the changes between ultra up to the minute design and traditional and along the way showed how the audience could create the stunning floral arrangements at home. After two hours the stage was full of Dulcie’s arrangements.

Following the vote of thanks, the audience were served with a plateful of festive nibbles, and a hot drink. The raffle was drawn with the lucky winners claiming their prizes.

Closing the meeting the chairman said how pleased the she was to have Mrs Joan Mariner President and joint founder of the club, in the audience after months of absence due to illness. The next meeting will be 14th February 2012 see HCN for details.

Personal Thoughts The sequence of relatively warm dry months has continued, and so it has been possible to continue digging in my garden when it is usually much too sticky. The out of season flowering has continued. At the moment I have geranium that I did not lift flowering in front of the yellow jasmine nudiflora. The jobs that I mentioned last month are both going well. The grass seed that I sowed very late has germinated well. I have cleared the old blackcurrant bushes nearly finished preparing the ground for replanting, and have acquired the Ben Sarek plants that I wanted. I have also got stuck into the annual fruit pruning, and hedge cutting jobs, but there is still loads to do.

My other preoccupation at the moment is that a few months ago I agreed to give a talk in February to both Wattfield and Hadleigh Gardening Clubs on the development of my garden since it was a new house in 1975 (6th and 13th respectively). I know exactly what I want to say, but digging through my old photographs to find the photographs to illustrate the points I want to make is proving both interesting and challenging.

Weather Records In November we had 25 mm (1") of rain, which is again rather low. At the end of November the 3 month running total figure stood at 72.3 mm (2.8"), which is only half the average figure. In November the maximum temperature was 17 Cel (63F) which is incredibly warm. November maximum temperatures are quite variable, but this figure is at the top end of the range. The minimum was 1 Cel (34F), which is a bit warmer than average. In my garden the ground temperature in mid December is 3 Cel (37F) which is not surprising because we have just had several hard frosts.

Hints Why not make a New Year Resolution to grow something different from seed in 2012? Raising plants from seed is becoming a dying art, and as a result the variety of seeds offered in most seedsmen's catalogues is slowly reducing. A couple of months ago Kings Seeds of Kelvedon came to talk to Hadleigh Gardening Club about their seeds, and I think that this year I shall be getting most of my bought in seeds from them this year. The remainder of my vegetable seeds will either have been saved by me, or acquired through my membership of the Heritage Seed Library. See www.gardenorganic.co.uk.

If you have got children why not try to get them to grow something from seed in 2012. It is reported that many children do not have any idea how the vegetables that they eat grow.. For children stick to the easier items.

I would suggest French Beans, Runner Beans or Radishes. January is a good time to give empty greenhouses a tidy up and clean, turn out garden sheds, and get grass mowers maintained.

May I finish by wishing everyone a Happy New Year, and hope that your garden will give you much enjoyment in 2012.

Dear Sir May I begin by applauding your concern over parking issues in Hadleigh with regard to access for ambulances etc. I share your frustration with parking issues, particularly with drivers who park on pavements and block the road for pedestrians and wheel-chair users. To the resident of Gaell Crescent who clearly has an interest in being a traffic warden: might I politely suggest however, that before you stick one of your home-made parking tickets on the car of your next victim, you actually check out the facts first as to who is in the wrong? On the afternoon of 6/12/11, the entrance to Gaell Crescent was not blocked by my car, which was parked legally and considerately, but by the driver of a vehicle that had subsequently parked (absent-mindedly) parallel to my car, as verified by a neighbour. To be wrongly accused is upsetting enough, to be told in the street that “The Police are on their way to you” in front of my 5 yr old, who then had to be calmed down thinking that ‘Mummy was off to prison,’ is simply unacceptable. So, before any further police time is wasted, it might be an idea to instead direct your energies to some of the able-bodied people who park selfishly in disabled places or those who park and depart from parent and child places with, it seems, invisible children. I am sure you will find this a very fulfilling past-time and your help will be much appreciated. Failing that, you could always pass the winter evenings watching repeats of ‘Traffic Cops’-a programme that will doubtless be right up your street.

I would like to say a big "thank you" to all those children, their parents, grandparents etc. who came to St. Mary's Church on the afternoon of 11th December 2011, in order to enjoy our annual Christingle service. The service was led by the Very Rev. Martin Thrower, our Dean, who encouraged us all in thinking about the exciting season of Advent, as we await the coming of Jesus at Christmas. I would also like to thank those good people who prepared the Christingles, our organist and the noble band of marshals, who assist me to ensure that all goes safely and smoothly.

Finally, my heartfelt thanks to Barbara and the Hadleigh Thrift Shop for their generous donation, which enabled us to purchase the oranges from the market stall, who in turn made our money go further! At the last count (including Gift Aid) the total raised for the Children's Society is in the region of £460. Well done to everybody. Thank you.

The intention is to save £50m over two years, with just over £25m planned in each financial year. Proposals of particular interest are below; • 1.5% efficiency savings across all directorates. In Adult Care Services (ACS) this would amount to a £4m budget reduction. Efficiency savings proposed also include reducing the procurement spend by £1m by negotiating better deals, and reducing the budget of the Customer Service Direct contract by £1.5m • A ‘Service redesign’ in ACS to save an additional £8m • Reducing management costs across the organisation by £1.5m (12/13) and £0.5m (13/14) • Target resources in children’s services to ‘reduce levels of demand’ – saving £1m (12/13) and £2.5m (13/14).

• There are additional proposals to re-let the highways contract – a saving not applicable until next years budget, but a saving of £2m.

The Lib Dems are concerned about the lack of detail in the budget papers, and whether the attempted efficiency savings are actually going to be achievable. There is also little detail on the effect of these savings on frontline services: particularly true in ACS where they are cutting £12m off of the budget and in CYP where they are aiming to reduce levels of demand. The next stage of the process will be when the cabinet looks at the final budget plan on the 24th of January, before it is recommended to February’s Full Council.

Cabinet Cabinet meeting on the 6th of December discussed the future of SCC’s In-House Bus and Coach Fleet (“Travel Services”) which operate some home to school contracts (both mainstream and special needs), some private hire and the in house swimming transport service’. The Council plans to create a Joint Venture company with Norse (Norfolk County Councils wholly owned company) to run Suffolk Travel Services, this is expected to last for ten years. The reasoning is that the council is currently losing £200,000 per year providing the service, and with this joint venture company all losses will be borne by Norse.

It also agreed proposing a joint approach to procurement of waste transfer and recyclate marketing services for all of the Suffolk Waste Partnership authorities (the County, Districts and Boroughs), lead by SCC. The reasoning behind this is due to the contracts for the services ending in 2014, and the belief that in joining together the cost of waste services will decrease due to economies of scale.

Full council The agenda for the Full council meeting which takes place on the 15th of December consists of; • A Petition to keep street lights on past midnight in Ipswich • Appointment of the Chief Executive and Head of Paid Service – confirming the decision made at the Staff Appointments Committee a few months ago to appoint Deborah Cadman as the new Chief Executive of S.C.C. • Library Services of the future – to agree the policy as decided at the November cabinet meeting.

• Annual Reports from the Standard Committee, the Audit Committee, and Scrutiny Committee • Air Quality Management and New Development – Supplementary Guidance • Annual Property Report • Amendments to the Constitution – including petitions.

New Heritage Organisation At the November Cabinet meeting it was agreed that the Council should look to create a new heritage organisation with its own archaeology and archive services and the Museum of East Anglian Life. The intention is that with one organisation there is a greater opportunity to seek outside sources of funding. It is not clear yet what this paper means for the future locations of the record offices in Suffolk. The Council has now launched a consultation on the plans in the Cabinet paper, and they wish to hear the views of people across Suffolk.

News from The Station Dear Readers, and welcome to the first edition of news from the Police Station for 2012!

Whilst preparing for this article I have taken a glance over crime statistics for the last few years. These show that Suffolk continues to be a low crime area, with recent figures showing that over 93% of people surveyed feel safe where they live. Crime rates are at their lowest level for more that a decade. Overall crime was down in 2011 by more than 3% and includes reductions in the important crime categories of violence against the person and house burglary. Suffolk Police continue to make great improvements in the way that we deal with victims of crime, and how we pursue suspects. The results are clear from the annual statistics, and we continue to work hard by engaging with our communities despite the current tight economic trends. At a more local level, I have already met with representatives from the local schools to discuss parking issues around school times, and am looking at ways in which to reduce the congestion caused by parents at specific points of the day. A new blue print for local policing has been announced which will see an addition of more Constables at Hadleigh Police Station early in the New Year, and this will then allow me and the rest of the Safer Neighbourhood Team to review our current priorities and commitments and decide on where we will focus our energies in the coming months. Already in the pipeline is a revision of the local Pubwatch scheme, and I will be looking to bring this back from an Internet based system to a more personable touch.

Parking, I am sure, will remain high up on our agenda, and I continue to talk with the Town Council and local businesses in a bid to build the multiagency approach to tackling this issue. I remind all readers that we hold bi-monthly meetings across the Babergh East area where we encourage members of the public to come along and talk about current local concerns. The next meeting in Wednesday 18th January 2012 at 7.30pm, Hadleigh High School. These meetings are not just miniatures of larger forums, these are the ones that count. If you have a problem and want the support from your local officers, this is the meeting in which to talk about them. Our updated website will also contain a list of venues and dates where the public can come along and talk to the team. We urge you to come and visit us if and when you are in the area as we are always eager to meet new faces and show you what we can do to help the community.

Safer Neighbourhood policing is not just about investigating crime, it is about integrating policing into the community, and being proactive with a view of reducing the fear of crime. Our future engagements will be built around this concept, and we welcome any views or information that may assist us. Here’s to a healthy and safe 2012, and thank you for your continued support.

Climbing Kili for Kids My name is Polly Bell and since going to the University of Chester this September I have been faced with a daunting but incredible experience that I hope you all will help me with. This June I will be climbing Mountain Kilimanjaro along with 20 other students in aid of an amazing charity called Childreach International. I'm aiming to raise just over £2,000 for the charity with a small amount of this going towards the trip.

Joint Housing Board for Babergh and Mid Suffolk Tenants and leaseholders in Babergh and Mid Suffolk can stand for election to become part of a new Joint Housing Board, which will make decisions about issues affecting all tenants across the two districts.

Plans to form a Joint Housing Board were approved by Members at both Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils last year. This is believed to be the first Joint Housing Board in the country where tenants and Members from two districts will work together, with equal voting rights, to decide on strategy and develop plans and policy. Martin King, Head of Housing for Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils said: “The Government's commitment to localism, the devolution of power to communities and the Housing Revenue Account reforms are all factors that mean we must transform our decision making processes. The new Joint Housing Board is part of that change and will provide the capacity and flexibility to meet these challenges.” The Joint Housing Board, which will be made up of 12 Members (six councillors and six tenants), will be established in the next few months. It will cover six wards across the two districts.

All tenants will be allowed to stand for election. Those who stand as a candidate will be asked to write a ‘mini-manifesto’. The manifesto will contain information about the candidates and what they see as the priorities for the new Board. All tenants will then take part in a postal ballot to elect a tenant to represent their ward. This will be done in February 2012. Richard Senior, Chair of the Babergh Tenants Forum said in support of the board: “This is an exciting new development and involves tenants fully. It is the first time ever that tenants have been involved in such a scheme. The tenants will have more control and more say in what goes on.” Rick Langford, Chair of the Mid Suffolk Forum has been involved for many years and feels that this is a major step forward: “This is great news and means that tenants will have an equal say in all matters that affect the service that the councils provide for us.”

Keith Wykes, Chair of the Joint Integration Group, a joint tenant forum that was set up to oversee the integration of the two councils housing service summed up by saying: “Exciting things are happening at your local council. We all urge tenants and leaseholders to find out more, and be part of it.”

Diamond Wedding Celebration Joyce and Neville Tampion of Weavers Close, Hadleigh celebrated 60 years of marriage with a dinner at The Eight Bells, Hadleigh with family and friends on Sunday 18th December.

Despite the early morning fog the sunshine did make a welcome appearance for all 268 runners. The course which sets off from the town's football ground and heads quickly into the beautiful rolling Brett Vale countryside was won by Ross Fawcet of Ipswich Harriers who narrowly piped our very own John Sciafe to first place in an excellent time of 58.02. Hares senior results as follows: John Sciafe 59.04, Valery Gladwell 1.07.42, Matt Hunter 1.07.59, Tony Saliman 1.08.39, Mark Summer 1.09.34, Steve Cox 1.12.22, Ramona Berslund 1.26.24, Andrew Stewart 1.26.56, Lianne Watkins 1.29.56, Kate Thomas 1.29.56, Anna Shires 1.33.44, Claire Bartrum 1.25.58, Tracey Squirrell 1.45.40.

In the junior race we had 17 junior Hares compete which was won for the second year in a row by Ieuan Alldis of Bury St Edmunds Pacers (07.02) who only just beat hares Tom Cowley (07.03) and Alex Baxter (07.04) to top spot! A fantastic effort and turnout by our juniors, we look forward to seeing you in 2012. Well done to every single one of you.

We would also like to thank everyone who helped to make the race a success. Thank you to all the marshals, the race referee, the race results service, the masseurs, Hadleigh United Football Club, Hadleigh BuildBase, Copella, The Cooperative Hadleigh, The Hadleigh Charity shop and all the other unsung heroes, who put an incredible amount of time and effort into organising the race. A special mention however must go to Jo Baker, Gale Pryor and Clive Pinnion without whom we wouldn’t have a race to put on! Thank you all and we hope to see you again in 2012.

HELLRUNNER 2011 The 2011 running of this year’s Hellrunner took place at Longmuir Camp Hampshire on Sunday 25th November.

Representing Hadleigh Hares were Brian Airlie Steve Hunt and Daren Allen, joined by former member Paul Morgan. Brian and Steve completed the race last year in temperatures of minus 5 degrees. This year it was an amazing 20 degrees warmer! This meant that the dreaded Bog of Doom and water filled sand pit were a refreshing dip 8 miles into the hard going cross country race that is the Hellrunner instead of having to break ice!

The results of the quartet were excellent: Brian 151st Steve 395th Daren 483rd Paul 285th so all well in the top 30% of the field of 1800 There are numerous interesting off road challenge races that a few intrepid Hares take on every year, the next being the Benfleet 15 in February. If anyone is interested in joining in please feel free to contact Steve on stevehuntnen@hotmail.com 53-12 CROSS COUNTRY – Hylands Park Hadleigh Hares had another good turnout for the second 53-12 Cross Country race of the season at Hylands Park on Sunday 27th November. The 13 runners that managed to face the 5 mile course found it to be challenging with freezing water to wade through and ditches to scramble in and out of. Everyone said that they thoroughly enjoyed the course; the senior results were as follows: Men: 10 John Scaife, 25 David Willer, 69 Matt Hunter, 70 Matt Leigh, 76 Adam Johnson, 124 Simon Fenn, 140 David Dulake, 163 Andrew Stewart, 166 David Ingleby.

Newton Green Golf Club has picked up two awards at the annual presentation night staged by the Suffolk Golf Partnership. Ian Woodhead, the inspiration behind the club’s high achieving junior section, has been named Suffolk Coach Volunteer of the Year.

The single handicap amateur golfer, who captains the club’s Hambro and Stenson teams, has held the Professional Golfers’ Association Level One coaching badge for three years and at Newton works alongside professional Tim Cooper instructing 45 juniors. He is also manager of Suffolk under 14s. One of Newton’s juniors, Connor Talbot, also figured in the Suffolk presentations. Newton is one of three centres of excellence in the county where promising youngsters are sent for extra tuition once a month during the summer. Connor was named best trainee at Newton, which draws its intake from across West Suffolk.

The award is given for commitment in learning, improvement and general demeanour. During the year his handicap has dropped from 32 to 18, and he is now in the Suffolk under 14s squad.

Black Belt achievements for 14 year old karate students at Stoke by Nayland Karate Club Adam Earl and Ellie Toogood, both 14 years old, who train in Shotokan Karate at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa, achieved their 1st Dan Black Belt recently at Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Adam and Ellie have been at Stoke by Nayland karate club since they were white belts and have trained consistently for over 3 years to get their black belts. Dixon Dart League As we approach the half way stage its the Legion Legends who top division one after a tight 7-4 victory over close rivals George A, Anthony Nicholls was on top form narrowly missing the bull in his attempt at a 167 finish, Chris Cowan did however take his double out to record a 144 finish, opting for 60-54 double 15 to set the standard. Division two is again topped by a Legion side as the British Legion (dawes) take control, Mark Rose seems to be there star player at the moment recording a cracking 12 dart leg, which included a 180 and an 80 finish,(16-48 double 8 ).Dumpy Rush has settled in well with his new chosen team at the Cock, recording a 180, and a 132 finish (60-60-double 12). Stuart Bull hit his second maximum of the campaign as his Hintlesham team demolished British Legion (dogga) 10-1. Maxine Walker also hit the lipstick big time with her first 180.

Hadleigh started the game cautious and struggled to find their recent form. Kieran Bleasby came close for Hadleigh in the 10th min putting the ball just over the Kesgrave bar. Kesgrave 1st goal was scored

by Ian Gosling in the 17th min. It was Hadleigh who almost levelled the score after Oliver Rhodes bursting run down the left wing finding Kieran in a goal scoring position, unfortunately putting the ball into the side netting. In the 31 min Hadleigh fell further behind after central defender Karl Williams came up the pitch to head in a long throw and place the ball out of reach of George Mutimer in the Hadleigh goal. H/t 0; 2 After the break Hadleigh manager Kevin Hay made changes Luke McGee replaced Tom Fairweather as striker and George was replaced in goal by Max Planck. Max’s presence was soon put to the test having to make 2 excellent saves to keep the score line to a minimum. Hadleigh continued to battle to try and produce a come back in this game, Carl Knock was unlucky not to have scored with a header following an Aiden Hipkin corner n the 58min. In the 65th min Kesgrave were awarded a penalty following a challenge just inside the box .from Hadleigh left back Jack Benee. Max in the Hadleigh goal made a further outstanding save but was unable to hold the ball Luke Boggis was able to find the net from the rebound to increase the score line. Moments later max was involved in an incident in his goal mouth finding himself with a broken finger after a challenge from Luke Boggis as a result will be unable to play for 4 weeks.

In the closing stages Hadleighs central defender Lewis Wilding made a goal line clearance to keep the score line respectable. With 5 min remaining on the clock Kesgrave extended their lead through Joseph Welham. Hadleigh now find themselves 4 points behind Kesgrave level on games played in their league table. Newton Green’s Silver Lining Financial clouds on the horizon for the economy are turning out to have a silver lining for Newton Green Golf Club. In recent times the club has promoted a membership offer of 15 months for the price of 12 at the start of the year. This year, however, the promotion looks like having a record take-up. Paddy Lockwood, club chairman, said recent talk of a double dip recession had sent shivers through the spines of golf club treasurers, fearing a repeat of membership losses suffered three years ago from which a number of clubs were still reeling.

Newton, however, had recently been able to demonstrate an extremely competitive pricing structure in relation to what it offered members.

Golfers were looking to reduce their costs in regard to travelling and subscriptions, and were re-assessing Newton’s attractiveness. This included the condition of its course and general ethos of the club, the latter aspect having been singled out for praise by the sport’s county and regional leaders. In recent times the club had placed considerable emphasis on bringing more women and younger people into the sport.

The junior section now had a record level of members, and the club’s intermediate membership category offering reduced subscriptions for 18 to 30-year-olds was about to be extended to those up the 35 years old.

Hadleigh United Football Club Hadleigh United were knocked out of the Ridgeons League Cup by losing at home to Haverhill by six goals to one. Four days later the two teams met again in the league with Hadleigh gaining revenge with a surprise win by three goals to one at the Milfield. New signing Lee McGlone scored twice before Jamie Cowan scored number three in the last minute.

A trip to Ely City produced another good showing against strong opposition. Lee McGlone put us ahead but Ely equalised to gain a point although Hadleigh missed a couple of chances in the closing stages.

The match at league leaders Wroxham saw the Norfolk side score twice in the opening ten minutes. Hadleigh then battled hard to draw level as Danny Allen and McGlone scored either side of the interval. But the Yachtsmen netted the winner just before the end of a splendid contest.

A trip to Brantham saw a goalless first half before Hadleigh scored six goals in an amazing second half. Ben Deacon netted four times while Ollie Canfer scored the other two. Our goalkeeper Daniel Heath saved a penalty kick as Hadleigh won by six goals to nil. A trip to Cambridge Regional College produced another splendid match with a draw of three goals apiece being a fair result. Hadleigh were in front on three occasions but the strong home side fought back to draw level every time. Shaun French scored twice for us with Danny Allen also on target.

The next match saw Mildenhall win by four goals to two at the Millfield. Lee McGlone and Danny Allen scored for Hadleigh. On the same day the Reserves won at Long Melford by three goals to one with Trevor Vincent, Ashley Williams and Luke Waugh scoring. We also beat Clacton Reserves at the Millfield by siz goals to two with Luke Waugh and Kieron Dilloway scoring two apiece and Deasko Garner and Jamie Cowan getting the other goals. The Reserve match at Haverhill was won by Hadleigh as Lewis Bailey headed in the only goal of the game in the second half.

Games against Brantham and the return match against Haverhill Reserves were both lost by the odd goal. Our Ridgeons Youth team beat Coplestonians by three goals to two with Tom Driscoll, Harry Evans and Patrick Armstrong on target. An Armstrong hat-trick was the highlight of a three two win at Felixstowe in the next match.

Hadleigh United Fixtures First team fixtures for Hadleigh United in January begin on Monday 2nd at home to Felixstowe. On Saturday 7th it is hoped to run a coach to Norwich United while the following Saturday 14th another bus trip takes place to Dereham. On Saturday 21st Kirkley will be at the Millfield before we go to Walsham on Saturday 28th. The Reserves will be at home to Halstead on Saturday 7th and another hard match awaits when Heybridge travel to Hadleigh on Saturday 28th. A busy month for our Ridgeons Youth team begins at home to Whitton on Wednesday 4th. On Thursday 12th we go to Haverhill before Cornard come to the Millfield on Wednesday 18th.

The month ends with the return match at home to Haverhill on Wednesday 25th. Fixtures are subject to alteration as cup matches will take priority. Fixtures will be announced on the club website which is updated on a regular basis.

What a fantastic evening we all had to celebrate a great achievement of the club surviving 25years of bowling and to thank our three members, Nora, Jean and William for being there at the beginning and still with us after all that time. Many thanks indeed to our chairman Ray, Angie and Chris for the organisation and for all the work entailed in making this an unforgettable occasion, but of course there were others who were in the background preparing a fantastic prize draw and generally helping.

Ray again must be mentioned for his personality and wit in the after meal get together, dancing with the ladies and telling a couple of jokes, one being just a little bit border line but certainly not offensive. Jock was also in great form and used his charm in selling, what must be said, an extra large amount of raffle tickets for the wonderful selection of prizes, many of which were donated by members of the clubs committee. Nora and Jean were presented with arrangements of flowers and Jock received, what looked, although covered, a possible bottle of the strong stuff. Maybe this is what caused his enthusiastic expression in the attached picture. It was also nice to see amongst the fifty plus who attended, many from other clubs and a few ex.

Members who had previously left the area to start elsewhere a-new, namely a lady from Stowmarket, and four from the village of Bildeston, also one or two from across the border at Nayland. Many of our members brought along friends and relations and so all in all made this an evening to be proud of and remember. Ray, again made a grand speech to finish off the evening and his main concern was the fact that the club was now low on members and expressed his concern that new blood was required so that the club would continue to function, so here I will reiterate that we really do need an influx of visitors to come along on one of our ‘’bowl-up evenings’’, Monday or Thursday to come and look and of course have a trial bowling session., just turn up and you will be made welcome.
