The End of the End-to-End! After months of planning, training and worrying Jimmy and Dick finally got on their bikes at Lands End for the real thing on Sunday 19th June and 13 days and 942 miles later got off them again at John O’ Groats. “Simples!” as a certain well known meerkat might say. But that would be to grossly underestimate and belittle what was truly a magnificent achievement. A little thing like a combined age of 135 years was not going to put them off and such enthusiasm is contagious. Their aim was to take on a challenge that would attract as much support as possible from the community to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, a cause which is very close to both their hearts, and I am very pleased to be able to say I think they have achieved that. Although there is still some way to go in collecting all the promised sponsorships (and if you sponsored them and are still to settle up don’t worry I am sure someone will be getting in touch shortly) so far we have collected in excess of £10,000 for the Charity. But Jimmy and Dick would be the first to admit that they could not have done what they have without a first rate support team. A big thank must go to Colin, Richard, George and Chris, the ‘boys’ who went with them, fed them, woke them and generally made sure they got to journeys end safely! But, equally as important, mention must also be made of all the other individuals and organisations that provided the financial and practical help that was vital to making it happen. Without you all it would not have been possible. A list would be too large to print here but thank you all so very much. Finally, if you somehow have missed any of the associated events which have supported this endeavour don’t worry, there are still one or two things going on. Keep your eyes open or contact Jimmy, Dick or myself. The next event on the horizon is the Hadleigh 3’s Open Darts tournament on 12th August at the British Legion and all are welcome, an entry form is on page 15. Every year almost 100,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with skin cancer and malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Cases of malignant melanoma have almost quadrupled in the last 30 years and the UK counts for roughly a fifth of all melanoma cases worldwide. Malignant melanoma is also the second most common cancer in young adults (15-34) in the UK. A recent 15 year study has shown that effective sun protection can protect against developing skin cancer – it showed a 73% reduction in invasive melanomas in a group of adults who applied high factor sun screen every day. There are common misconceptions among the general public about UV rays and the threats they pose. Here are the facts: UVA rays: • Damage the skin as low down as the dermis and accelerate the aging process • Penetrate the atmosphere from sunrise to sunset and are present all year round • Make up 95% of rays that reach the earth • Penetrate through cloud cover and glass UVB rays • Penetrate the upper layer of the skin – the epidermis and cause damage to the skin, primarily sunburn. • Are the primary cause of skin cancers, including melanoma • Are strongest between 10am and 4pm Short term exposure to UVA and UVB rays causes sunburn, photodermatitis and photo-sensitivity but long term exposure can lead to photoaging and skin cancer. To protect yourself from the sun’s UV radiation you need to get sun SMART Seek shade between 11am and 3pm Make sure you never burn Aim to cover up with a t-shirt, sunhat and sun-glasses Remember to take extra care with children Then use a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 in the UK and 50+ abroad. The Persistent Pigment Darkening factor indicates the level of protection against UVA rays and the EU recommends that that sunscreens should have a ration of at least 3:1 SPF:PPD. For you techies out there there is a My UV Alert iphone app which is free to download and educates users how to behave responsibly in the sun and provides daily information about UV levels in the area. If you want more information about sun protection and/or skin cancer please come and talk to one of our pharmacists Taj West is the Superintendent Pharmacist at Mill Pharmacy located within the Hadleigh Health Centre

Well done to all the staff and children in our Early Years Foundation Stage, who have just been awarded the ECAT standard (Every Child’s a Talker). In our recent ECAT assessment, our score was outstanding! The ECAT standard recognises our efforts to create opportunities for speaking and listening activities in our planning and in the way the inspiring classroom environment is set up. The ‘talking’ and storytelling skills the children develop help to build the foundation for their achievements in writing as they get older. Congratulations everyone! Thank you to all the staff members, parents and visitors who contributed to the success of our grand Courtyard Opening ceremony. Despite the damp weather, we all had a great time at the barbecue. We were delighted to welcome lots of guests, including The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Hadleigh, The Very Reverend Clive Young (Bishop of Dunwich), Mr Mann (one of our former Headteachers), PCSO Patricia Gibson and many other representatives of the church and local communities. The barbecue was really well attended and a suitable way to celebrate and thank parents for all the money they raised towards it. The new courtyard is a beautiful outdoor space for children to learn in. It has been great to see the new courtyard in use during lessons and at lunch times. The children have looked after the new plants and helped to make the courtyard even more attractive by contributing flowers in unusual containers. There were some really impressive creations, including an ‘Action Man’ jeep with flowers growing in the back and lovely blooms in Wellington boots and a toy shopping trolley. Thanks to all the children who helped to brighten up the school! This year’s Summer Fete was a tremendous success! A great deal of effort was put into organising the event and there were lots of volunteers on the day, for which we are very grateful. Thanks to all the children, parents and staff members who helped out. We really appreciated the tents and ‘manpower’ supplied by the soldiers from Wattisham, led by Mr Brennan. There was a lot to enjoy: a bouncy castle, Punch & Judy, tug o’ war, fire engines, a tractor, a police car, various refreshments for sale in the new courtyard ‘food court’ and many stalls. The raffle was particularly popular and included some wonderful prizes, including tea at Hintlesham Hall, Ipswich Town tickets, a spa day at Peake Fitness and tickets to a West End show, courtesy of Hadleigh Executive Travel. It is very rare that the sun shines for our Summer Fete but for once the weather was on our side! There was a lovely atmosphere and we raised over £1600 for the school. Congratulations to all involved. We braved the wind and rain to ensure that Sports Day went ahead as planned. In the morning, the Nursery and Reception children participated in a variety of events, including the egg and spoon and a dressing up race! Throughout the afternoon, the children from Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 excelled in lots of sprinting and hurdling, as well as a number of field events, such as throwing and long jumping. In the end, the Orange Team were overall winners, much to their delight. Thank you to Mr Girling and all those who helped to organises the activities. It was an enjoyable day despite the dark clouds overhead! The children in Key Stage 2 have enjoyed participating in a joint crosscurricular project based around the Second World War. There have been lots of activities, including interviewing local people about their wartime experiences, making gas masks and cooking using wartime rations. Children created a fascinating museum of artefacts and

information, which parents were invited to visit. Also, they performed a fantastic wartime variety show – more on this next month! One of the highlights was the great trip to Duxford. The children learned a lot from workshops on wartime dancing, the Morse code and toymaking. They talked to actors in role as Lancaster Bomber Crew members and secret agents. Also, they took part in fire drills and gas drills, using their own gas masks, as well as gardening in the ‘Victory Garden’. Wartime songs added to the fun atmosphere. Well done to all the children for their excellent behaviour throughout the day. Thank you to Elmsett School for hosting a cookery session for children who are experts at design technology. Our representatives had a great time making lasagne, especially when it was time to taste the final product! Also, our Year 5 children participated in a science day at Hadleigh High School. The day was based around the work of ‘Water for Life’, a charity that aims to raise awareness of the shortage of good quality water and sanitation around the world. Lesson focused on issues relating to sustainability, access to local water supplies and hygiene. Finally, the children worked on promotion and raising awareness. This was a really valuable learning experience and our thanks go to all the High School staff members who helped to organise it.

An Opportunity not to be Missed During September a spectacular piece of art work will be on view in Hadleigh. Taking its inspiration from Celtic, Medieval, Persian and Byzantine sources Creation – a Celebration a forty panel work in paint and embroidery will be displayed in St. Mary’s Church Hadleigh from 2nd - 28th September between 10am and 5.00pm each day. Created by Sue Symonds and taking over two years to complete this amazing work has only been displayed in Bath Abbey, Sandown Park and is now available to us in Hadleigh. Each detailed and intricate panel has its central subject matter created in gouache, watercolour and pen and ink, while the broad surrounding border is realized in appliqué, hand and machine embroidery. Illustrating the story of Creation as told in Genesis the panels are rich with exquisite butterflies, decorative lettering, finely drawn music, with vibrant colour schemes distinguishing each panel. It is a truly a banquet for the eyes. It is hoped that local embroiderers and craft workers will also display their creations. If you and your friends have any interest in painting, embroidery, the Bible or if you just enjoy beautiful things make sure you do not miss this amazing opportunity to see a truly spectacular piece of work. If you plan to bring a group please let us know, so that groups do not clash, nor coincide with a wedding or funeral in the church. During July please contact Jackie Cork, 01473 823739 or the Parish Office, 01473 82498. In August contact David and Wendy Atkins on 01473 822535 or atkins.d@hotmail.co.uk

Goodbye Tesco I would like to thank all of my readers, clients and friends who have been so supportive to my mother and I during my father’s illness. We have been quite over whelmed by such kindness. I was absolutely delighted that Tesco has been given its marching orders. No doubt the store will make further applications to develop its site in Hadleigh. We are so fortunate that we have a market town that remains unmolested by these giant supermarkets. I want to see a town that has its variety of independent shops. I stood outside the planning hearing at the Town Hall in Hadleigh and a reporter from Suffolk Radio suggested that we would relish greater choice. As I retorted, we have plenty of choice in Hadleigh. In view of the number of vehicles that pass my office, it appears that many of you have access to cars and thus can easily reach shops in nearby towns. I for one use local businesses and will often be seen perambulating up and down the High Street. I would encourage all of you to use our shops in Hadleigh and to be most vociferous in objecting to any similar Tesco applications in the future. It makes me mad that local councillors are prevented from voting on the Tesco application since their interest is considered to be prejudicial! I know that many of you come to us for your legal services and for which I am ever grateful. I spend a great deal of my day in general discussion with clients at the office and on the telephone. My clients are able to float things past us and obtain meaningful views on proposals. This is “service” and something that is not so readily available when dealing with some call centre or on-line facility. You all know that we have vast experience in conveyancing – an area of law that appears to be conducted generally at such a low level. Property law is full of pot holes for the unwary. We do not pretend to provide a cheap service but a good service for a reasonable fee. So before you are persuaded to use your estate agent’s pet solicitor come and see us. We are independent. We will crusade on your behalf. Some of my readers thought that Frank, my chauffeur, is a figment of my imagination. The lady at the petrol station now knows that he exists – she saw him filling one of my cars. Howard Gibbons

The shop pictured ‘I. G. £34.95 inc It is often thought and remembered that summers were always hotter in days past. However the hottest day of the year so far, Sunday 26th June, heralded the celebration of the 130th anniversary of Hadleigh Tennis Club. To mark the occasion ladies and gentlemen’s teams contested a “challenge match” with Bildeston Tennis Club, a re-enactment of the match which had first been played by gentlemen on the 19th July 1881 (HCN article May 2011). As in 1881 the gentlemen of Hadleigh managed to win the match and the Challenge Cup. However the ladies match was a very close affair being decided by a tie break set, excellently contested by Mrs Jo Newman and Mrs Kate White of Hadleigh and Mrs Victoria Simmons and Margaret O`Hanlon of Bildeston. The Hadleigh ladies just managed to edge the result and claim the 1881-2011 Challenge Plate. The occasion was a great success in 30 degrees of heat, perhaps a little warm for blazers, flannels and long skirts. However players and spectators alike enjoyed the tennis and the excellent barbeque lunch that followed. The event also saw an exhibition match played between two Suffolk young men who are up and coming British tennis players. Paul Midgley (ranked 12th in the UK at under 16) and Ryan Lambert (ranked 22nd in the UK at 18). They played some scintillating singles tennis whilst players recovered and spectators relaxed with a glass of Pimms or similar. The day ended with the presentation of the Challenge Trophies (kindly sponsored by the Hadleigh Thrift Shop) and commemorative gifts to the players. The photograph shows members of both teams toasting 130 years of tennis in Hadleigh, with Trevor Rowland and Liz Allan, the respective Hadleigh captains of the day holding aloft the Challenge Cup and Plate. Now that this match has been re-instated we hope that it will become an annual event within the club calendar. Bildeston have already issued Hadleigh with the challenge to defend the trophies at Bildeston Tennis Club next year. If you would like to see more photographs of the event or know more about Hadleigh Tennis Club, please go to www.hadleightennis.org.uk

Once a Sapper always a Sapper Two Suffolk-based regiments helped WW2 Royal Engineer Len Goddard to celebrate his 100th birthday in unforgettable style at a party for 140 people at Capel St Mary. Len Goddard, who saw action from D-Day to Berlin and was commended by Field Marshal Montgomery, received messages of congratulation from Colonel Neale Moss, Commander Aviation 16 Air Assault Brigade and Commander Wattisham Flying Station, and from Lieutenant Staff Sergeant Dee Hague, 3 Colonel Frazer Ross, Regiment Army Air Corps (left), Commanding Officer, 23 Engineer centurion Len Goddard, and Matt Regiment (Air Assault), Royal Perry, of 23 Engineer Regiment Engineers, at Rock Barracks, (Air Assault) Royal Engineers Woodbridge. He was presented with a framed painting of an Apache helicopter in action by Staff Sergeant Dee Hague, of 3 Regiment Army Air Corps and a former Royal Engineer. The painting was signed on the back by Colonel Moss. Sergeant Matt Perry, representing 23 Engineer Regiment, presented Len Goddard with a regimental plaque. He passed on the thanks of Colonel Ross and the regiment for Len Goddard's war service and said: "Once a Sapper always a Sapper." An Apache helicopter, returning over Capel from a training flight, made a bow to Len Goddard. He was driven to Capel from his grand-daughter's home in Hadleigh in a WW2 Jeep escorted by two outriders in WW2 uniforms on WW2 motorbikes. A telegram from HM The Queen was handed to Len Goddard by his eight-year-old great-grandson Patrick from Witham, Essex. Len Goddard is a frequent visitor to his grand-daughter's home in Hadleigh and his son-in-law's home in Capel. He has established himself as a great character locally and has many friends in the area. There was a letter of congratulation from South Suffolk MP Tim Yeo and a birthday card from his constituency MP, Bolsover's Dennis Skinner.

Business and a Buffet for Fidelis In spite of it being the Fidelis AGM there was a record turn out for this, there 7th. Perhaps its popularity can be attributed to the brevity of the business being closely followed by a delicious buffet and a chance to chat. The 2011 venue was the Guildroom and the tasty summer buffet was provided by Smugglers L to R Barbara Tryon, Eve Denegri, Catering. Members Carole Burne, Liz Wilson (Chairwoman). enjoyed a refreshing Lin Slaughter and Jan Devey celebrate welcome drink on arrival their re-election. while musing over a mini display of members’ old photos. Chairwoman, Liz Wilson, then deftly steered the ladies to their places so that the formal business could be tackled without delay. When asked to vote, members showed such an overwhelming and enthusiastic support for the present Committee that they happily agreed to continue. Liz praised the committee for their hard work, thanked members for their enthusiastic support and for renewing their membership. Carole Burne presented the Treasurer’s report and Jan Devey considered the group’s publicity and the programme - past and present. She also thanked Liz and Lin Slaughter for their special contribution to the club’s success and the welcoming, friendly atmosphere within it. There being no further business, other than the demolition of the buffet, the formal part of the AGM ended and the dining began. The 8th Fidelis year will begin with a talk about Falcons called ‘Feathered Hoodies’. Jan Devey

The winter flowering shrubs Most people think of the earliest wild flowers as being Snowdrops and perhaps Primroses or Violets, but there are some shrubs that flower in the winter that you may miss unless you’re looking for them. Some you won’t spot because of their colour and others because they’re very small. Because the insect populations are very low during the winter month these very early flowers are not pollinated by bees as you might expect, but by either the wind or very small insects. Both the photographs were taken along the railway around mid February – just when you might think there are no flowers about What are these early flowers? Hazel (Correlinus aquiline) The Hazel is a very common shrub producing the tasty little “hazel-nuts” during the autumn. It grows almost everywhere and was once a very valuable source of timber for both building and manufacturing small implements – thing such as rakes, hurdles etc. In bygone times the timber was so valuable that the foresters used to plant it as an understorey in Oak woodlands in a pattern known as “Coppice with Standards”. The Hazel was coppiced (cut-down to form “stubs” – properly known as “Stools”) every 6-8 years leaving the Oaks (The “Standards”) to grow on to between 60 and 150 years old when they themselves were felled to build wagons, ships and houses etc. The builders of the time used to split the cut and trimmed hazel stems (“staves”) and then nail them across the timber frames of houses for use as laths to support plasterwork. In even early times it was probably the “Wattle” part of the “Wattle and Daub” houses. Everyone is familiar with the male part of the shrub’s reproductive system as bright yellow catkins that adorn hedgerows during February. But where do those nuts come from? These are formed by the wind-pollination of the very small scarlet flowers that you can see in Photo 1. (I’ve twisted the twig round a bit so that you can see them) The male catkins are around 50mm (2 Inches) long, yet the inconspicuous female flowers - which are bright scarlet – lay very close to the bark and are no more than about 3mm long. That’s why you walked past without seeing them! Spurge Laurel (Daphne laureola) This is a very slow-growing evergreen shrub that favours dry, alkaline (chalky) soils and the poor low-light conditions among trees in woodland. It grows very weakly and seldom reaches more than 1.5m (5 feet in height) The flowers – which often appear when the snow is about, are small, “trumpet-shaped” and around 12mm long (1/2 inch to us “oldies”) growing in small clusters around the leaf joints (axils) The flowers emit a very strong fragrance (particularly at night) to attract small insects such as Ants for pollination. The whole plant is toxic to some degree and in some countries it is on their list of ”poisonous-weeds”. The sap can cause dermatitis, and eating the small black berries that appear in the autumn can cause very serious illness in humans, but not in the birds, which it uses to distribute the seeds (no one has ever been able to explain to me why birds are immune though) It has a very clever strategy for “preservation of the species”, actually changing the chemistry of the ground around its self so that few other plants can get a foothold. Once established the only plant that will grow close to a Spurge Laurel bush is: - more of the same of course. As you can see in Photo 2, the flowers are pale green - that’s why you didn’t see them! A ‘Must Do’ Activity this Summer During the last year Hollow Trees Farm Trail at Semer has changed beyond recognition. It simply is a ‘must do’ activity for this summer holiday! Old favourites such as Dirty Dave the tractor stuck in the mud, the Rolly Polly pole, Goat Mountain, mini tractors and the welly game still remain but there are many more exciting new additions. You can stop at Pogals Pit, where you will find rope swings, a climbing pole and the Bears Den. Keep walking and you will find some racing ponies, a creepy croc. and the climbing ladder. If all this makes you tired then why not sit a while in the Giants Chair and watch the world go by. Around every corner is something more to see and do. As well as all these activities there are plenty of animals to see from goats to geese and chickens to cattle. The farm changes every day and every season so it’s guaranteed that once round is never enough. All this for just £1.50 per person, (two years and under go free) It really is a great value for money day out for all the family. Find Hollow Trees Farm in the village of Semer, three miles from Hadleigh on the A1141 Lavenham Road. The farm is open seven days a week. Hadleigh High School Class of 1991 20 Year Reunion Hi to the ‘Class of ‘91’. I hope you are all keeping well. Well, it’s been 20 years since we were all at school together and, no doubt, we’ve all got plenty of stories to tell. To mark this 20th anniversary we will be hosting a school reunion on the evening of Saturday September 10th 2011, 7.00pm - 12.00am at Hadleigh United Football Club, as I’m sure you’ll remember was just around the corner from the ‘Conch’ and where the majority of us probably had our first taste of alcohol! There will be a disco and a burger bar which will be available to purchase food between 8.00pm - 10.30pm. We hope that many old school chums and some teachers will attend so that we can all relive those care free days! Admission fee will be £10 for a ticket payable on entry which will cover the cost of the venue, entertainment and make a nice donation towards the charities of lost ones that are sadly no longer with us, These charities will be The Ipswich Childrens' Hospice in memory of Andrew Hambling and AFRT in memory of Alison Fracella (nee Kettlewell). I’m sure that the night will be brilliant fun and there’ll be a lot of fond reminiscing and much laughter so I hope to see you there. If you do want to attend, please email me at j.broomfield1@btinternet.com stating clearly who you are and how I can contact you if needed. Please also include your maiden name (if female) so I know exactly who you are. I look forward to hearing from you soon and hopefully seeing you again on September 10th. Best wishes, John Broomfield

The summer term is always a busy one, packed full of different events and activities. One of the highlights of the summer term is always the production that this year, Rhinos and Pandas classes worked so hard to produce. The Warrior Queen, the story of Boudicca’s fight against the Romans, was performed brilliantly and to a very high standard. The children had to learn a number of songs which they sang extremely enthusiastically. They also had to stage several fight scenes between the Roman and the Celts which took some careful planning and skilful acting! The children thoroughly enjoyed performing and gained a great sense of satisfaction from the experience. Sports day is another of those summer treats we look forward to each year. Sports day at Beaumont isn’t just a day when we celebrate sporting achievement, the children, their families and friends mark the occasion with a picnic lunch on the school field before the activities in the afternoon. The children then take part in various sporting activities, competing for a team trophy. Well done to the black team who walked away with the team trophy. Another important social occasion and fund raising event for the school is the Summer Barbeque. Organised by Tracey Alexander and her team this year’s event was a real success. Even with unfavourable weather there was a good turn out to enjoy the range of activities and displays. The event was supported by an army team from Wattisham who constructed and ran an obstacle course for the children. We were also very lucky to be treated to displays from the school gymnastics team and Diamond Lights majorette team. Several children from the school are members of The Diamond Lights, who performed brilliantly. The police and fire brigade also supported the event, with the children enjoying operating the sirens in the emergency vehicles! With the better weather in the summer term the teachers also take the opportunity to arrange class visits. This year to support their work on the Tudors, the Owls class visited Lavenham. The day was jam packed with activities, with a visit to Little Hall, a guided tour of the town itself and a visit to the Guildhall. On these trips it’s always encouraging to receive positive comments from members of the public about the children’s behaviour and conduct, so well done Owls! The younger children in the Busy Bears’ Nursery also had an enjoyable and successful trip to Hollow Trees Farm. The children fed the various animals and learned about the different produce that the farm sells and grows. The Squirrels and Penguins classes also enjoyed a visit to another local attraction, Baylham House Farm, where they met and fed different types of rare breed farm animals. The summer term is also a sad time too as we have to say goodbye to our Year 6 children as they move up to secondary school. On the last day of term Year 6 will be performing a special Leavers’ Assembly entitled ‘A Journey Through Life...’ which I’m sure will be a great success! As we’re singing, it’s just one more step...,

What’s on.... Supporting live music all year round!

Saturday 6th August, 9 pm On the 5th July Lord Tollemache acting as the Queen’s representative in Suffolk made the formal presentation of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade to Hadleigh based company Plant Parts Ltd. The award recognises sustained growth in exports for the company’s products and services in the construction machinery spare parts sector. The company has exported to over 100 countries in the last 5 years. Lord Tollemache made a short speech and presented a crystal bowl and certificate recognising the award. Penny Cook as Hadleigh Mayor also made a presentation of an embroiled town plaque, this will be proudly displayed in the company’s reception area, Babergh Vice-Chairman Nicholas Ridley also attended. Robert and Richard Finch accepted the award and thanked all the staff for their contribution in making the company the success it has become. The presentation was followed on the 14th of July by a reception hosted by The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace, Richard and Robert Finch with their wives Sue and Lorna, attended.

Overweight Trucks flout the Law Residents of Hadleigh piloted a "Lorry Watch" initiative by Suffolk County Council ("SCC"). They found more lorries breaking the 7.5 tonne weight limit in one day than had received fixed penalty notices in 8 years along the same road. Residents in Angel Street and Benton Street have long complained about overweight lorries ruining historic houses and endangering pedestrians. Trucks regularly bounce up the very narrow pavements in Benton Street and speed down Angel Street. Hadleigh Town Council recently endorsed the SCC initiative to train Observers to report on weight limit infringements. SCC Trading Standards have agreed to pursue the reported offenders and to report back their successes. The large number of volunteers who spent from 5.30 to 19.00 on Wednesday 29th June involved with "Lorry Watch" underlined the strength of feeling about protecting Hadleigh's Heritage. Their number included two Babergh District Councillors who live in Angel Street and Benton Street and experience the problems first hand. Sadly, the residents are still battling with Suffolk County Council to change the sign at the B1070 / A12 junction, that omits to mention the 7.5 tonne for lorries coming from Ipswich and Felixstowe. SCC argued that to change a single sign could cost up to £25,000 and is therefore unaffordable. A reliable source quotes less than £500 for changing the existing sign to conform to the one in the opposite direction. We will ask our SSC Councillor if some of the "amenity budget" could be used to pay for the sign as the continuing use of these roads by HGV's are causing considerable short and long term problems in a conservation area. Hadleigh Community Primary School Summer visits As usual, the end of term has been extremely busy. All groups have been on visits outside of school. Year 6 visited Clacton and Colchester Zoo to celebrate the end of SATs and Year 5 visited Ipswich Museum and Christchurch mansion as part of their Victorian topic. They also had a ‘Victorian Day’, which involved all of the children dressing up as Victorians and having Victorian style lessons. A cane could be heard resounding down the corridor on several occasions! Year 4 visited Kentwell Hall as part of their Tudor topic and also had a Tudor walk around Hadleigh, looking at evidence of Tudor buildings in our locality. Year 3 had a walk around Hadleigh as part of their Geography topic and were able to improve their mapping skills. Year 2 visited Colchester Castle, and Year 1 visited Foxburrow Farm as part of their Science and Literacy curriculum. Reception went to Easton Farm Park and Nursery went to Frinton for the day! What an exhausting, but enriched time the children have had! Nursery News We have been very busy in Nursery this half-term. As well as induction sessions, getting ready to go to ‘big’ school, our topic has been Out and About so we have been on some visits near and not so near. We took part in Barnado’s Toddlethon on Friday 17th June, when we brought in a wheeled vehicle from home and did as many laps of the playground as we could. On Friday 24th June we went to Cox’s Park for a picnic and play, on the way we went to the shops to buy iced buns, strawberries and chocolate buttons! Once again this year we spent two days, Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th July, at Frinton. Although we had some rain on both days we had a wonderful time in the sea and making sandcastles. We will celebrate the last day of term with a Pirate’s Picnic in the Nursery garden, with walking the plank and hunting for treasure. We wish all the Nursery children a happy holiday and hope they enjoy ‘big’ school. Love from Mrs Pitt, Mrs Gage and Mrs Cooper. Music Concert On Wednesday 29th June, we had our annual music concert. The standard of the performances was very high and included a ukulele orchestra, pianists, saxophone solo, clarinets, flutes, violins, a number of singers, recorder groups, a cellist, trumpet player, bell ringers and the choir who sang a selection of Elvis songs. This year, it was so popular that we had to put on two performances! Many thanks to all of the parents who supported us, both before and during the concert. We are delighted that we have so much musical talent at our school! Rose Bud help year 4 Artists At the end of the term, Year 4 had an art topic on Georgia O’Keeffe. In order to do this, they needed fresh flowers and Rose Bud kindly donated a good selection for us to sketch using view finders. Many thanks to Rose Bud for their support of our curriculum.

David Grimsey In loving memory of a dearly loved husband and dad, David William Grimsey who passed away one year ago on the 20th August 2010. We talk about you everyday and know your not far away. We miss you more than words can say, but the love we had will always stay. God bless. Helen, Joanne, Carol & Kevin XXX 18

News from The Station Welcome to this month’s edition of news from the Police Station. At a recent Town Council meeting, councillors discussed the ever-growing problem of parking around Hadleigh. It was noted that since the introduction of long term parking charges in our car parks, many residential streets have become parking zones for people going to work on a daily basis. Coupled with this, we continue to see a regular abuse of the single and double yellow lines around the Town. Quite often, members of the public stop and speak to me about how frustrating it is to drive along the High Street and be held up by shoppers who will park on the single yellow lines. Single yellow lines are exactly the same as double yellow lines between the hours of 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday. You cannot park or wait on them. If you are immediately loading or unloading heavy items you are safe to park on the lines, but only for the purpose of this activity. The law does not allow you a magical ten minutes. We are currently working on an operation to target those responsible for anti-social and illegal parking. This includes those parents who persistently insist on blocking driveways and parking on corners close to our schools. It also includes those who believe it their right and privilege to park on the grass verge, zig-zags and double yellow lines at the High School when visiting the gym. One of my intentions is to re-educate those responsible for these actions. Highlight to individuals that there are suitable parking areas in town, and that you don’t always have to park right outside the shop or building that you are trying to get to. Many of you will not be aware that the single yellow lines along the High Street from Lloyds Bank to Edwards, and Adnams to Huffers will soon be replaced with double yellow lines. This is being done at my request in order to keep the High Street clear from parked vehicles. You have to realise and understand that the rules of the road apply to everyone. There are restrictions in place on certain roads for safety reasons. I did not become a Police Officer because I wanted to dish out hundreds of parking tickets. I do not particularly enjoy issuing parking tickets. However, I am here, along with the rest of the team, to uphold the law and to respond to community concerns. As long as people complain to me of parking issues, I will have to respond positively. If you think that your local officers should be concentrating on other issues, then please help us by parking in more suitable places, and encourage others to do so. We are your local Safer Neighbourhood Team. We want to build relationships with the community and help resolve long term issues. In order to do this, we can’t always make popular decisions, but we do have to make the right decisions. Please contact me to discuss this, or any other policing issue. Lucy Chapman (Sudbury) Ford Fusion 1.6:

Chris Yule (Capel St Mary) Renault Laguna DCi Estate / Peugeot 206:

“Once we had decided that we wanted a low mileage Ford Fusion, the speed and service was impeccable, with two options given to us within a matter of days. The car was collected in pristine condition just as we were told it would be. Any queries or problems we had were dealt with quickly and efficiently. Nothing was too much trouble. When we require a new car, we would have no hesitation on using Kersey Car Sales again.”

“My wife and I bought a Peugeot 206 from KCS and shortly afterwards we asked Stuart to try and find us a Renault Laguna diesel estate. I was quite choosey about the colour and model but Stuart acted swiftly in finding the right car. A number of vehicles were offered some outside our price range, so we had several options before committing. I paid a deposit for the car despite not seeing it (I was assured it would be immaculate) and when we collected it was in excellent condition. We were also supplied with a service and new MOT. Overall an excellent service.”

Also Stacey has had to leave us as her husband has been re-posted, we would all like to wish her the best of luck and we and the children are going to miss her. On a happier note, congratulations to Amy, who has completed and passed her BA (hons) Early Childhood Studies Degree, and thank you to the parents who allowed their children to participate in Amy’s observations. She has worked extremely hard over the last few years and her dedication has paid off, Well done Amy!! In July we had our annual outing to the Giggle Factory and everyone had a fantastic day, most of the children fell asleep on the journey home, proving a great but exhausting time was had by all. We also opened on the day of the school fete and we raised enough money to buy a small sofa for the children’s quiet corner. Thank you to all of the staff, committee and parents who came along to help and support us. Hadleigh Healing Society We are all reeling from the daily revelations about the phone hacking that has taken place in the press and the lack of moral code that is widespread in some corporations. Are we, the general public, to blame in some part four our need to know some of the more personal details of a person’s life. It is a very difficult question and how far do we allow the press to delve into people’s lives and what means are permissable to obtain that information. A very tricky one to get the balance right. Our healers have been trained to respect people’s confidentiality and not make judgements, yet listen to their problems. We all have to deal with problems, some big, some small but they all have an impact on our everyday life. Some people can cope, others feel overwhelmed. We are there to help you. Please telephone 01473 823282 for an appointment (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org for information.

Rotary Review CLUB MATTERS: The annual assembly of the Club took place at the end of June and the incoming President outlined his plans for the coming Rotary year. Many of the events will be similar to previous years but he hopes to enliven weekly meetings, increase outside activities and invite more guests to the Club. The Assissant District Governor was present and commented favourably on the programme. He encouraged visits to other clubs and also the reconstruction of the Club's website. The induction of Mike Sands as President 2011/12 took place at the first meeting in July and was attended by the Town Mayor, Penny Cook. She spoke briefly about her career in teaching which eventually brought her to Hadleigh in 1980. Soon she was persuaded to stand for the Town Council and was first elected in 1986. She thoroughly enjoys Council work and this is her second spell as Mayor, the first being 12 years ago. She outlined the responsibilities of the Council and is keen to encourage younger members of the community to become involved. SPEAKERS: 1 Club member, Barry Chaplin, having returned earlier this year from an extensive tour of South America concentrated his talk on a section of the holiday relating to Machu Picchu. He described in detail the journey to the historic city and illustrated his talk with many photographs of the ruins and surrounding area. On the tour as a whole many forms of transport were used including planes, coaches, boats and four wheel drive vehicles. Another impressive part of the tour was the trip through the Andes from Chile to Argentina. 2 Linda Stratford spoke about her life in Suffolk since arriving in 1971. After searching extensively in East Anglia she and her husband found Red Hill Cottage in Aldham and settled there to set up a cattery which they ran for a number of years. She related a number of amusing stories about her early experiences of country life including calling the police when worried about shooting nearby at night only to find that some locals were out hunting rabbits. Low flying crop spraying aircraft also startled her at first as did escaped cattle from a nearby farm. She has also encountered ghosts at a nuber of properties where she has lived and worked including a local farmworker at Red Hill Cottage and the well known Grey lady at Chantry Park Nursing Home. It was a most entertaining talk. MEMBERSHIP: The Club has formed a new membership committee to try and build on the success of recruiting 5 new members in the past two years and more will be heard from it in the coming months. Anyone who would like to find out more about Rotary in Hadleigh is welcome to any of the speaker meetings. FORTHCOMING PROGRAMME: August 4 Partners Dinner at the China Garden, August 11 Rotarian Peter Castle -Tickling Trout, August 18 Peter Harper - Ancestry, August 25 Dick Beechener - End to End Cycle Ride For all information relating to Hadleigh Rotary Club please contact Rotarian Alan Williams tel no 01473 830229 possible to avoid disappointment.

It looks so much better when this is done. Dave’s offer comes at a good time as the Management Committee are facing an unexpected difficulty relating to the mowing of the main grass area. HMRC has fined a farmer in Devon for using a tractor filled with red diesel fuel to voluntarily cut a sports field for a local club. This has sent shock waves around the country as thousands of recreational areas are cut in this way. The upshot is that, at the moment, the retired farmer who cuts our field feels unable to take the risk. Drinking on the field Parents may wish to know that recently a dozen bottles that had contained 20-30% proof liqueur drinks have been found in the bins. They included such beverages as Crème de Cassis, Crème de Menthe and Schnapps. If you are a parent of teenagers who may brush with the people bringing such alcohol onto our field you might wish to keep your eyes open! From Lucy Harwood’s diary The entry below from 6 June 1944 paints a charming picture of an aspect of village life during World War 2. Lucy Harwood was a lover of the countryside and of flowers in particular and it is interesting that wild flowers were so common in 1944 that it was seen to be quite acceptable to pick bunches of them for a village competition! “I kept today for ‘Salute the Soldiers’ competitions – paintings and wild flowers I had to judge. It took place in the Village Hut across the river by the church. It was so, so hot. There was a nice collection of little paintings the judging of which was no difficulty. Some of the children has simply coloured printed outlines – they got no prize. One girl of 13 was quite good – I quite enjoyed doing it. There were about twenty bunches of wild flowers so I chose two for best decoration. One was extremely good. It was constructed of only three sorts of wild flowers. A thick outer rim of Bugloss (a dark blue flower) – next a ring of white Ox Eye Daisies. In the centre many scarlet poppies. The effect was delightful. Then we came to judging who had brought the most varieties of wild flowers. I played a game popular among guides in the old days...I said they would get one mark for each flower and two marks if they knew it’s name. Then there came a woman with a child of four and said she could compete for she had a high number. I began looking at the collection and saw that it was fairly complete of all wild flowers hereabouts. Meanwhile the four year old had gone off – she seemed to take no interest whatsoever in the flowers. So I smelt a rat and said to the mother, “Who found these flowers?” She replied, “Her father found them for her”. So she did not get an authentic prize – or rather HE did not. But as the collection was very interesting I awarded them an extra prize. I saw various of my pet children all in their Sunday best delighting in races. Mr Girling said they had arranged it so that everyone had a prize. Savings Stamps were given for prizes. The heat in the hut was very great so having done my judging I came home to a quiet tea.”

Pause for thought A song by McFly begins, "it's all about you". Perhaps most of us would like to think that life is all about us, but it shouldn't be all about you or me but all about Jesus. A Christian song has the true words, “It’s all about You, Jesus. It’s all about You.” But for the grace of God we are nothing. Everything we do, the skills we have, our abilities, should be used to glorify God. In spiritual matters it is not all about you or me, it's about the One who gave us life here and now, and will give us life eternal if we put our trust in Him. The apostle Paul wrote, "--he who glories, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commends himself is approved, but who the Lord commends". 2 Corinthians 10: 17-18. Whatever happens in our life we should daily give the honour and glory to God. It is He who gives us life, and who sustains our life, so let us use each day for His honour and glory. It's not about you or me but about Him. Colin Bull

Hadleigh Evening WI At the July meeting of Hadleigh Evening WI the president Philippa Carruthers presented Emma Law with a cheque for £180 raised by the WI May show raffle in aid of Upaya Ananda a bungalow in Hadleigh which provides respite care and fun for disabled clients to give their unpaid carers a break (see picture) Auctioneer Steve Lester gave an interesting talk entitled Antiques and Auctions. He encouraged everyone to go to an auction and study the catalogue before buying. Appearances can be deceptive an example was a shabby writing desk which came from the battlefield of Waterloo and made £21,000. Steve advised setting a limit on spending. He judged the competition “My Treasure” which was won by Jill Taylor with her entry a Victorian thimble Two members recently held coffee mornings to raise money for good causes. Carole Cranston for Dick Beechener and Jimmy Wilding who cycled from Lands End to John a Groats to raise money for cancer research and Jean Madge for the local “Riding for the Disabled”. Once again Ann Porter hosted Hadleigh Evening Garden Party to which we were delighted to welcome members of our local Three Valleys Group The next meeting will be held on 20th September in the Seminar suite above the Hadleigh library starting 7.30pm. Geoff Evans will give a talk entitled Alaska – Bears, bears and more bears. Visitors and new members are welcome Philippa Carruthers 01473 823057

Beer and Music Festival – A Popular Success! The fine weather and the enjoyable sounds of local bands brought the town out in their hundreds at Layham Road Sports Ground over the weekend of July 1st and 2nd. The “Hadleigh Rugby Club Beer Festival” is now a regular event in the Community calendar relaxing with a glass of real ale and soaking up the sun to the sound of local musicians appears to hit the right chord with many towns folk. Over two thousand visitors crossed the entrance to the third festival over the two days and organisers Jim Hammond and John Kavanagh were delighted with the success and money raised for the Club and its Youth and Mini Rugby section. “ It took a lot of hard work and organisation but when you see the support that the people of Hadleigh and surrounding areas give to the event it makes it all worth while”. Hadleigh RFC is indebted to the local businesses who dug into their pockets to help sponsor and support the occasion. The Kings Head in Hadleigh were the main sponsors of the festival. The rugby club would also like to thank local builders’ merchants “Buildbase” for providing the portable toilets, barriers and cones. Treasurer Doug Finbow was another delighted person over the event as he can see the club taking a healthy 3 figure profit. Following the growing success of the last three festivals, the committee at Hadleigh Rugby Club are already beginning to make plans for an even more improved festival for 2012.

Lazenby, Mrs. D.A. Haylock, P.M. Matthews, L. Munson, Mrs. M. Munson, Miss J. Nevard, and R. Whiting. In attendance: PC Matt Paisley (Suffolk Constabulary), Councillor Mrs Grandon (Babergh District Council) Mr. Matt Barber and Mr. Ken Williamson (Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service) APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies for absence had been received from Councillor T. Sheldrick. This apology was accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Councillors Mrs Byrne and Miss Cook declared a personal interest in the Long Stay Car Parking item as they are local residents. Councillors Miss Cook and Mrs Munson declared Prejudicial Interests in the Accounts for Payment as they were payees. Councillors Miss Cook, Mrs Byrne, Lazenby, and Mrs Munson declared a personal interest in the Hadleigh Grand Feoffment Charity as they are all members of the Charity. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 19th May 2011 were taken as read were confirmed and signed. Matters Arising The Mayor reported that, to date, there had been no response to the co-option advert in this month’s Community News. Matters Arising (Minute No: 9) The Clerk reported an e.mail received from Suffolk County Council declining the offer of the bus shelter for the bus stop near the Holiday Inn in Ipswich as they did not want to encourage the students from One Suffolk using this bus stop. POLICING PC Paisley presented the Police Report for May and it was noted that 34 crimes had been recorded during the month. The offences comprised as follows: 10 thefts; 13 criminal damage; 3 burglaries; 2 common assaults; 1 message, letter, e.mail etc. indecent threat, false; 1 minor wound without intent; 1 take a conveyance motor vehicle; 1 possession of Class B drugs – Cannabis; 1 fraud by false representation and 1 harassment pursue course of conduct. Of these crimes 5 had been detected. 18 parking tickets had been issued. PC Paisley provided Councillors with details of the May Show which, for the police, had been very successful. There had been 22 officers on duty and only three incidents over the whole weekend. The Mayor was delighted that the May Show had passed without incident and asked that it is made clear that this outcome was down to the policing of the event. PC Paisley responded to questions relating to the new Farm Watch Scheme and parking on Church Street. LONG STAY CAR PARKING The Clerk was asked to write to Babergh District Council advising them that Hadleigh Town Council refute their statements that the charges are having little effect in Hadleigh as there are many examples in the town where this is not the case and would they consider a u-turn as the scheme is losing money. Also would the District Council consider decriminalising parking in Hadleigh? This would free up police time and allow a private company to enforce parking restrictions which works very successfully in Ipswich. The Clerk was asked to write to the Chief Constable advising him that parking around the town is an issue that should be addressed. FIRE SERVICE Concerns had been raised regarding a skip fire on the industrial estate which the local branch of the fire service had been unable to attend. The two attending Fire Officers provided Council with background information on the workings of the Fire Service. Hadleigh Station is an on call station. All the fire fighters have regular jobs and carry an alerter. The majority of fire stations throughout Suffolk work on this method. It is a challenge to provide 100% availability at a station all of the time, the main problem is day time cover which has deteriorated over the years. This can only be maintained with the co-operation of employers. Those who do allow employees the flexibility to work as fire fighters were very much appreciated. The Mayor asked that through the Town Council minutes appearing in the Hadleigh Community News those employers be thanked by Hadleigh Town Councillors for supporting the fire service. Two and a half years ago a consultative report was produced to investigate how systems could be improved. This produced 27 recommendations which have now been implemented. There is a new electronic system in place where every fire fighter can see if they are or are not available so that if the nearest fire engine is not available the next nearest The log pertaining to the incident of the skip fire showed that the Hadleigh fire station was not available due to a lack of fire fighters therefore the Ipswich engine was sent out. It took approximately 20 minutes from the receipt of the call to the engine arriving on site. There are 11 fire fighters based at the Hadleigh station. It requires four to be available in order to attend an incident. Across Suffolk Hadleigh is one of the higher performing stations in the County. The Mayor thanked the two officers for their time and excellent report which had alleviated any concerns that had been raised. She, once again, thanked the employers for their commitment to the fire service and to the fire fighters for the service they provide to the town and County. REPORT OF THE DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Written reports had been 28

received from Councillors Mrs Grandon, Mr. Riley and Mrs Munson. Councillor Grutchfield provided the final figures of the referendum relating to the proposed merger between Mid-Suffolk and Babergh. The outcome of the referendum was not to go ahead with the merger. The new Chief Executive had taken office and it was recommended that an invitation be extended to attend the July Town Council meeting. REPORT OF THE COUNTY COUNCILLOR Councillor Grutchfield gave a verbal report which included information pertaining to petitions received over cuts to services, proposed pylons in the County and the new leader of the Council had now taken office. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Clerk reported: i) a letter received from a local resident regarding the new community building which had been copied to all Councillors ii) details of the Queens Diamond Jubilee in 2012 although most of the celebration will be during June the Mayor is hoping to mark the accession to the throne in some way on the 6th February 2012. iii) a thank you letter from Hadleigh Community Primary School for a grant received iv) an article from the East Anglian Daily Times regarding the Clopton Rose Service which will be filmed for a future six-part series about the history of the nation. STANDING ORDER NO. 24 There were no questions asked. Jerry’s Diary Dripping June will bring things back in tune, come July the cuckoo must fly, so my late father used to say. June was a dripping one alright, much needed rain has turned the lawns etc green again, but the Giffords Park site still remains dry at the end of June. Sedge Warblers - two more were singing in a ditch near Ash Street along with two Reed Warblers. Swifts - A large feeding group of 600+ were in the area between Sproughton Crossroads and Chantry Park Gates, Ipswich on 24th June, I noticed these whilst travelling on the bus. Turtle Doves - a slight increase in numbers during late June/early July, 9+ pairs so far in local patch area. Lapwing Chicks 15+ at Shelley and 6 Little Ringed Plover chicks from 26th June to 5th July at Shelley Res, I wonder how many will survive? Another species seen this summer, Common Tern at Shelley on 3rd July, three years since One of three Little Owls seen at Polstead I last saw a Common Tern in the area. July is the start of the waders passing through. First Green Sandpiper where 2 were seen at a small pond in Layham on 3rd July. First Common Sandpiper at Hill Farm Pond on 7th July. Three young Little Owls were seen and photographed in a wood pile at Bower House on 15th July by a well known local ornithologist. 4 Spotted Flycatcher Fledglings were being fed by both adults near Popes Green Lane, Layham on 18th July and another pair of Spotted Flycatcher were taking insects in Elm Trees to feed calling fledglings along Overbury Hall Road, Layham. Red Kites seen at Kersey Tye by Matt Garnham and others on several occasions. Butterfly: Purple Hairstreak and White Admiral seen by Matt Garnham at Elmsett on 2nd July, Raydon Wood and Ramsey Wood on the 5th July by myself with very high numbers of Ringlets in many places. A few Hummingbird Hawk Moths were seen first week of July, two were feeding on my Buddleia bush in Hadleigh on 5th Silver-Washed Fritillary July. On Saturday 9th July 16 species of butterfly were found at a site near Ivytree Lane including a SilverWashed Fritillary feeding on brambles, a very scarce find. The Bird Atlas 2007-2011 have now been completed. Britain and Ireland Atlas will map bird distribution in the breeding season and winter, map patterns of relative abundance and assess changes since previous Atlases. In all I had 12 Tetrad Squares to survey during 2007-11, nine were in this area, the other three, Assington, Cavendish and Bradfield Combust, the last two were completed on the 2nd July. The results from these Terad Atlas of wintering and breeding birds will provide vital information for bird conservation in Britain. It could take two or three years before the results are published as there will be 1000’s of records to go through, although the Suffolk results will hopefully be sooner. Jerry Oxford

Head Teachers Introduction Sports Awards’ Evening On Tuesday 12th July we held our first Awards’ Evening celebrating pupils’ achievements and participation in sports at Hadleigh High School. The aim of the evening was to acknowledge pupils’ commitment to their sport and their teams as well as the skills which are required to succeed. It was also a pleasure to be able to invite parents to share this celebration evening. Our pupils looked impressively smart and made a very positive impression on our special visitor – Helen Decker. Helen is a local girl from Ipswich who is a highly successful long distance runner. She has gained various accolades including a bronze commonwealth medal (which she wore) and is hopeful of attaining a place to represent Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics. Her running has improved at a rapid rate as her talents were only identified 5 years ago, making her achievements particularly remarkable. Helen was accompanied by her coach, Clive Sparkes, and they were delighted to present the awards to our pupils. Many of our successful sports teams had voted for the team member who they felt had made the greatest commitment to their team as well as awards being presented to individuals for high levels of achievement in sport. Helen spoke about the skills she has needed to develop in order to achieve so highly as an athlete. As we can all imagine there is a required degree of natural aptitude. However, Helen made it clear that this was not enough on its own to allow someone to reach the top of their sport. She stated that the skills which allow someone to excel include: hard work, commitment, resilience, a willingness to learn from your mistakes, the discipline to reach your goals. Needless to say strong teamwork skills are also essential. Helen shared the need to work effectively with her coach as well as the other runners with whom she trains. It struck me that the skills she listed are the key to achieving success in any field of sport or indeed work and life. In order to achieve highly and be successful a person needs to have the discipline to practice and improve their work, cope when the work seems hard and not give up, learn from the errors they make, put the necessary hours to complete the project or task and have the ability to work effectively as part of a team. These are all skills which we value in our school and encourage our pupils to develop in the classroom as well as the playing field. We recognise that these are the skills which will enable our pupils to be successful young adults. It was a pleasure to share this experience with our pupils and their families and we will continue to look at developing further opportunities to celebrate success within our school. Amazing Ardéche Adventure During Enrichment Fortnight, 70 pupils of Year 9 were fortunate enough to visit the Ardéche river in the South of France. The pupils and teachers participated in many activities including: Kayaking, mountain biking, high ropes, raft building, climbing a vertical playpen and Jacob’s ladder and many more. Temperatures soared up to 35 degrees on their excursion to the Mediterranean where the pupils had the chance to sample French delicacies at a fishing village of Le Grau Du Roi. Pupils had a fantastic time on the Ardéche Descent especially on the rapids. Many said that going under the Pont d’Arc was an experience never to have been missed! However, the most exciting, electrifying part of the holiday was in the two-day Ardéche River descent, where pupils kayaked through rapids in the baking sun, sleeping on a bivouac site in a sleeping bag and on a groundsheet under the stars at night. As the river was very high this year, a lot of rocks were showing above the water level, adding yet more of a buzz to the journey. Capsizing was a fairly regular occurrence, and after a long journey everyone returned home, exhausted but full of life after the amazing trip! After a seventh year returning to Ardéche, the teachers would like to say that pupils behaved impeccably and were a credit to their school. 32

Work Experience During the full packed enrichment weeks the Year 10s went to work…experience. They had two working weeks at companies in and around Hadleigh. We would like to say a big thank you to all the businesses in Hadleigh that graciously took on the Year 10s. We know how hard this was to do! Year 8 French trip to St Omer Fifty five Year 8 students went to St Omer from the 13th to the 16th June 2011. They practised a lot of French expressions that they have learned in the past few years and enjoyed discovering more about France and its culture. Some of them were very brave and tasted “escargots”, others kept to their “croissants” for breakfast. Students had many opportunities to converse in French and bought French “patisseries”, lovely ice-creams and pancakes (crêpes). Enrichment Fortnight During enrichment fortnight, 20th June-1st July, students who were not involved in the Ardéche or Thorpe Woodlands trips took part in a variety of learning activities. These ranged from exploring the sport of handball to discovering why people believe that the Apollo 11 landing was an elaborate hoax used by NASA to win the space race. Students thoroughly enjoyed these experiences and said that the activities were fun, enjoyable and a much needed break from day to day lessons. News from the Library Alex Scarrow, author of the popular Time Riders series, came to speak to Year7 and 8 on Tuesday 5th July. Alex discussed his book, the series concept, time travel and the possibility of changing the present by meddling with the past. Three students from both Years 7 and 8 were also pitched against each other to complete a fast paced interactive Game Show style history quiz. It was a very close competition, but Year 7 took the victory. Afterwards, the students all had the opportunity to get their books signed. The students were engaged by Alex’s energetic and dynamic performance, with the library now having many requests to borrow his books. Thorpe Woodlands On Monday 20th June, 20 Year 9 pupils set off to Thorpe woodlands Adventure Centre. They had a week full of exciting challenges such as raft building, canoeing, climbing, abseiling and a range of high rope courses. They also enjoyed evening activities like camp fires, games in the woods and a group talent show. During the week the group learned to trust each other whilst gaining new skills in an action filled environment. As the team left the centre they reflected on their week and how they had all grown closer, conquered fears and learned more about themselves. Thank you to everyone who made it an awesome week. Combined Arts Over two weeks, Year 8 brought together a spectacular presentation to celebrate the culture and traditions of Africa. Students worked in one of four areas allowing them to develop their skills in Dance, Drama, Music or Art. On Thursday night the performance lasted around 45 minutes and the audience were treated to the exotic sounds of samba instruments and African drums which effectively evoked the rhythms of Africa. Huge willow masks, created by the students working in Art, formed the dramatic backdrop and throughout myths and legends were brought to life through Dance and Drama. Thank you to our visiting artist Jon Halls whose inspiration brought this project together and to Nikki Betts for her brilliant work with the dancers. Sports Award Evening On the 12th of July Hadleigh High School held its first Sports Award Evening, with 300 parents coming to see the sporting success of 180 of our students .We had awards for Players player, PE star performer, swimming, outside explorer and Team of the Year. The ‘Sport’s Person of the Year’ award went to Matt D’Souza for his outstanding ability in hockey. The awards were presented to the pupils by Helen Decker a Great British marathon runner, who encouraged everyone to pursue their ambitions in sport. Thank you to her and

her coach for taking time to come. We would like to congratulate all of the winners for their hard work and hope that the high sporting standards of our teams continue next year. Physics Heaven The Institute of Physics held their 2011 Physics Decathlon in Ipswich on the 4th of July aimed at high achieving students in Year 9. Twenty seven teams from across East Anglia competed to show their knowledge and investigative skills across a range of areas in physics. The Hadleigh High School team was made up of Jonathan Bone, Sam Hinsley, Kate McIntosh and Collette Motteram. The morning session went by in a blur with the teams conducting and answering questions on 10 physics experiments covering subjects as diverse as magnetic theory, optics, electricity and the mechanics of motion. This was followed by a session where they designed and conducted their own experimental rocket investigation. At the end of this session the top three teams went forward to the final. These teams were given 30 minutes to prepare a 5 minute presentation on the physics behind one of the experiments they had conducted during the morning. The Hadleigh Team chose an experiment to investigate the effect of water vapour in expelled air from human lungs against atmospheric air on electrical conductivity. They explained how this could be investigated experimentally, their observations and the science behind the experiment to a large audience made up of representatives of the Institute of Physics, teachers from the competing school and all the other competing teams. We were thrilled and delighted when it was announced that the Hadleigh High School Team through their hard work during the day had been awarded 2nd place. As a school we would like to congratulate them and look forward to competing in more events like this in the future. Athletics During June, three Hadleigh High School pupils represented Suffolk in the Eastern Counties Schools Championship held in Norwich. The three athletes chosen to compete were: George Johnson (year 9- 100m), Chris Rose (year 10- Shot-put) and Toby Rankin (year 10- 800m). All of the three did extremely well but George Johnson was chosen to represent Suffolk in the All England Schools Championship in the 100m. The championships were previously held in Gateshead. We wish good luck to George and we hope he does well in his event. English Prefects Do Some Creative Writing English prefects, Ellen Boorman, Megan Wilson, Alice Downie, David Strike, Georgina Elmer and Leanne Higgins, were chosen to partake in a writing workshop which they would then in turn deliver to a group of Year 6 students, identified as ‘Able, Gifted and Talented’. The workshop took place at St Mary’s Primary School. The workshop involved noting down what reading and writing mean to you, personifying an object such as a button hanging off a coat and generating a story from fifteen random words. The English prefects led the workshop admirably with some guidance from Mrs Dawson, who organized the collaboration. One pupil expected it to be “really boring” however she “really enjoyed it”. Another student “really enjoyed the writing of the poems”. We have attached a lively, vivacious poem written by Liesel Dewes from Elmsett Primary School which describes the “last teaspoon in the washing up bowl”. Every day it’s the same, Child or adult, the same old game, I am the smallest in the drawer, Yet grown-ups love what they use me for, Kettle on, teabag in, And sugar from the sugar tin, Milk comes next, But I’m the best, I stir it up, in the same old cup. Then splosh, into the sink I go, I’m the smallest you know! Plates go first, then cups, forks and bowls, But to all the others, I’m like a lamb or foal, So here I am day after day, And until everyone else is done, It’s here I’ll stay! Year 8 Water Aid Fete 3.575 million people die each year from water-related diseases. Nearly 2 million of these are children. If you could just imagine yourself in those poor people’s shoes, wouldn’t you want to help? Year 8’s at Hadleigh High School are putting on a fete to raise money for Water Aid. The fete will take place on Tuesday 19th July, and anyone from the school can come and have fun for a good cause. There will be 18 stalls, and each form will be running 3 stalls. There is a range of activities going on including Soak the Teacher, and a cake stall too. The pupils in Year 8 thought and put together this super idea themselves, and we wish them luck to raise as much money as they can for Water Aid!

Eco Warriors Update Hadleigh High is very pleased to report that the Eco Warriors have had an extremely successful past year. We have achieved the Eco Schools Silver Award for our school, and at this moment the outdoor classroom is being built. Working with Year 7, we have designed and created a butterfly and insect garden. We have also introduced an ink cartridge and mobile phone recycling scheme for any unwanted cartridges and phones so we don’t just throw them away. Through campaigns, we have continued to raise awareness of the need to reduce the school’s energy use. We have encouraged pupils to switch off lights and computer monitors more often. We hope that the Eco Warriors work will someday have an impact on the whole town. Thank you and Goodbye to leaving teachers We would like to say a big thank you and goodbye to all of the staff leaving the school this year. We will be sad to say goodbye, but wish you all luck for the future. We would like to thank Ms Drury, Mr Brown, Mr Brimstead, Mrs Napolitano, Miss Green, Mr Higgs, Miss Hogan, Miss Quinton, Miss White, Miss Plumbly, Miss Scahill, Miss Miller, Mr Demi, Miss Long and Mrs Chamberlain, for all of their hard work at the school over the past years. The year 7 trip to the natural history museum... The Year 7s have been studying earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis so they took this chance to visit the natural history museums fantastic tectonic exhibitions ‘The Power Within’ and ‘The Restless Surface’. They got the opportunity to experience what it would be like in a real earthquake in a high tech simulator. The Year 7s said that it was ‘interesting and exciting’! They enjoyed their free time looking around the museum, even the 2 hour coach journey to London was highly enjoyable with a selection of films to keep them entertained. They especially enjoyed the whale exhibition and over all they had a whale of a time!! Young Chamber Training Day... On the 29th June, 30 students from Year 9 travelled to Hintlesham Community Hall to participate in the Young Chambers Day. The day involved students creating a promotional video and pop-up-board for Hadleigh Castings. This event gave pupils the opportunity to develop skills such as communication, organisation, and team work with the end result being a presentation to the rest of the group and several representatives of Hadleigh castings. “It was enjoyable because we had a lot of freedom, and we could plan our day ourselves, working with different people to usual,” Reece Wedige. Year 7 Camp... The Year 7s went on another fabulous trip this month, during enrichment fortnight. They spent three action packed days on the edge of (no not glory) a forest. The days were spent building awesome dens and playing an array of games including capture the flag, which was loved by all (especially the winning team)!! The nights were then spent in the tents having a good old sleep after their busy days!!! Shakespeare schools festival much ado about nothing Rehearsals have been going well for the Shakespeare Schools’ Festival 2011. The production is quickly moving forwards, now on the way to choosing costumes and props. The setting is the 1920s and the piece will be performed at the New Wolsey Theatre on November 1st 2011. Students involved are getting nervous for the big day but we’re sure it will all come together and will be as successful as other years.

Audrey Mackenzie-Smith Audrey has been a Hadleigh resident for almost two decades, coming to live in the town from Woodford Wells, Essex, after the death of her husband Roy at ninety four, bringing her nearer to his family from his first marriage. Yorkshire born and bred she was educated at The Notre Dame Collegiate College, Leeds, taking a School Certificate with two languages, leaving at sixteen and a half. Her parents, Edgar a university lecturer in dental hygiene and mother Evelyn, enrolled her into a London business college despite the dangers of war time London to study all aspects of secretarial work, thus becoming a highly proficient shorthand typist in the process. Upon completion of the year long course in 1942 she took her first employment with an engineering company but it was not long before she decided to volunteer for the army. She returned home and in October 1942 at seventeen and eight months she enlisted into the Auxiliary Territorial Service, (A.T.S,) the forerunner of the Women’s Royal Army Corps, (W.R.A.C.). becoming Atkinson A, Private W/214725, in J Company, Leeds Group A.T.S. After training she was attached to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, (R.A.O.C.) and assigned to the orderly room as clerical assistant to the officer commanding of the unit. Her skill as a netball player and athleticism then saw her sent on a course to become the unit’s Physical Training Instructor (P.T.I.). Subsequently she was posted to Scotland and here her career took another dramatic turn when she was told that her new unit certainly had no need of a P.T.I. nor for that matter another clerk but they were short of lorry driver’s. Despite her protests she was given rudimentary instruction on the army’s 15cwt. maid of all work the ubiquitous Chevvy (Chevrolet) and it was not very long before she had her first inevitable brush with another truck. This resulted in her being placed on a disciplinary charge (“fizzer”) to appear before the Commanding Officer on defaulter’s parade. Audrey was quick marched into the C. O’s office, whereupon he glanced at the young woman before him and with a wave of his hand said, “Charge dismissed,” and she was quick marched out again. On another occasion the unit were to be visited by an inspecting General. All ranks were told that they had to “look busy or hide“ on the day of his visit. Audrey and another A.T.S. girl decided to do this by lying beneath the Chevvy as if they were doing a vehicle maintenance inspection. A loud voice asked what were they were doing under the truck and the other girl called out, “We’ve been told to hide”, a roar of laughter came back with a “Well done” and the General passed on by !! As the war continued towards D Day she was transferred to a camp on the South Coast that was a holding base in the build up to the invasion, this became a prime target for German air attacks. During one such raid she suffered an injury of which she knew little other than of an almighty bomb blast behind her and awaking in a military hospital, recovery was long, slow and painful. It was suggested she should be discharged unfit for duty against which she protested and ultimately was placed on light duties until her demobilisation in September 1946. Upon demobilising when appearing before the war injuries tribunal she negotiated a lump sum award in return for forfeiting a disability pension, this she used to purchase a small apartment. The legacy of this war time injury is that to this day she wears a neck support when relaxing in an easy chair or sofa. Having secured her living accommodation she was offered a government civilian rehabilitation course and took a year’s vocational training as a Company Secretary obtaining a Royal Society of Arts Certificate (Merit). Her business career was to be in trade and commerce and her first two positions were both with industrial trade organisations. In 1951 despite her burgeoning career and without affecting it in anyway, she joined the Territorial Army (T.A.), signing for a set two year period as a part time soldier/typist at week ends. Having firmly established herself in commerce and formed many important contacts she moved on to high profile companies in the world of banking, construction and commerce, in all of which she had a big influence in her role as Personal Assistant to the various Chairmen and Board members by whom she was contracted. As her business career was beginning to wind down she found romance in the form of the Chairman (husband to be Roy), of the company for whom she was his P.A. Their joint overriding passion being a love of sailing and they took to the water at every

opportunity in their own yacht. Ultimately yachting and the sea became too physically demanding and they had to wind down their interest. It was then that Audrey took up water colouring, teaching herself from video’s and art lesson programmes on television. Her talent and impressive results can be seen in her neat and tidy home which she shares with her blind thirteen and a half year old dog Skipper. Both she and Skipper are well looked after by her helpful carer Irene, who is a valued highly. The only unexplained and puzzling factor in meeting this interesting lady was why she had never received the three war time medals for which she was eminently eligible, a fact of which she was not even aware of. Fred Breyer They Also Served is an occasional series as a follow on to the Hadleigh Heroes series printed in H. C. N. a few years ago. If there are any WW2 or other veterans who would like to feature please contact Kelvin at Hadleigh Community News.

Local slimming expert puts weight behind call to end calorie counting A top Hadleigh slimming expert has welcomed a new report into the serious health risks of obsessive calorie counting which she says “highlights the dangers of modern faddy diets”. Yvonne Skinner, Slimming World Consultant for the Hadleigh group, which helps people to lose weight through healthy eating, group support and increased activity, was speaking after a report by the Future Foundation think-tank revealed that millions of Britons are at risk of conditions like heart disease and cancer because their obsessive diets are causing them to miss out on essential vitamins and minerals. Yvonne, who lost 2 Stone herself with Slimming World, says she hopes that the report will increase awareness of the risks of quick fix diets that rely on starvation or cutting out nutrient-rich foods or even whole food groups. Yvonne says: “With more celebrity endorsements, more diet articles in magazines and more people using the internet to find ways to lose weight, it’s no surprise that there’s been an increase in the number of people trying faddy diets as a quick fix way to lose weight. “Traditionally thinking has always been that to lose weight you need to count calories. But this skews our way of thinking of food and often leads to an unhealthy diet because we count the calorie value of food rather than its nutritional value. That’s why at Slimming World we encourage slimmers to eat unlimited amounts of foods that are low in energy density and fill you up. Members choose from a huge list of Free Foods, including fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice, potatoes, pulses, lean meat and fish, without ever having to count, weigh or measure. There’s no need to take drastic steps like living on tiny portions or liquid foods, or cutting out certain foods or food groups to lose weight. “The slimmers in my group know you don’t ever need to feel hungry or deprived in order to lose weight. Our Food Optimising eating plan is in line with all healthy eating recommendations as it encourages people to eat food from all the major food groups – with a third of their intake fruit or vegetables – so that they get all the vitamins and minerals they need for a healthy body and successful weight loss. “With the support of likeminded slimmers in group members shares ideas, experiences and motivation on a weekly basis, building confidence and self esteem, developing coping strategies and staying on track with weekly weigh-ins until gradually behaviours like becoming more active as well as healthy eating become the habit of a lifetime.” To find out more about Yvonne’s Slimming World groups, contact her on 07971 921093.

Hadleigh Gardens

NOW AVAILABLE Personal Thoughts Holidays have come and gone, everything survived my absence, and the grass and the weeds spent the fortnight growing like mad. I get a lot of weeds in my vegetable patch mainly because I use a lot of home made compost, and it is difficult to get the compost heat hot enough every time to kill the weed seeds. Weeds are easier to deal with in a vegetable patch than in a flower garden because in the vegetable patch the wanted plants are nicely laid out in evenly spaced rows. This makes them easier to attack with a hoe. Ideally one should hoe on a dry day so that the damaged weeds get cooked by the sun. Hoeing 3 times alternate days practically eliminated the jungle of weeds that I found on my return from holiday. Hoes come in all sorts of shapes and types, and it is a case of what suits you for the job in hand. My favourite for attacking weeds is an old Wilkinson Sword Swoe. This is like a conventional push hoe except that one of the side blade supports is missing, and the edge of the blade where it would normally meet the support is sharpened so that you can use it to cut off weeds in the gaps between plants. For the flower borders my wife prefers an old onion hoe with a blade only about 1.5" wide. This year the raspberries, and red currants both gave very acceptable crops, but the black currants were poor. Black currants are subject to attack by a pest called big bud mite, and after keeping it at bay for many years my plants have succumbed. The mites live in the dormant buds, and ruin them. One can get some control by picking off the attacked buds, but if it gets too bad the only real option is to replace the bushes, which is what I am going to have to do. If you are walking along Hadleigh High Street please look up. The baskets of petunias this year have been superb. Congratulations are due to the traders who joined in the scheme this year, and to those who have maintained them. It is a pity that there are one or two obvious gaps. The weather has not been kind to the dahlia display in Magdalen Road, but there is still time for this to improve. Open Gardens in August 447 Main Road Harwich Sunday 7 Larks Hill Tuddenham St Martin Saturday 20 Tudor Roost Fingringhoe Sunday 21 Woodwards Coddenham Sunday 21 Monksfield House Monks Soham Sunday 28 Weather Records In June we had 86.9 mm ( 3.4 " ) of rain. The first sensible quantity of rain since February, and about 1.5 times our average monthly rainfall. At the end of June the 3 month running total figure stood at 100.6 mm ( 4 " ) , which is still only 2/3 of the average figure. Still so far July has been quite wet, so next month I think we will be closer to the average figure. In June the maximum temperature was 31 Cel ( 88 F ) which is slightly warmer than usual, and the minimum was 7 Cel ( 45 F ) which is typical, so June warmed up nicely. In my garden the ground temperature in mid July is 15 Cel ( 59 F) which is slightly cooler than average. Hints August is one of the more difficult months to give useful hints. One hopes that the weather will be beautiful, and one can simply cut the lawns, and dead head a few flowers, start to pick some apples and enjoy the garden. It is too late to sow seeds of many things, but there are a few seeds that one can sow if they appeal to you. Amongst the vegetables there are three groups that can be sown :(a) Root vegetables like winter radish and turnips. These will easily grow big enough to eat during the Winter. (b) Spring cabbage to eat as Spring greens or heads ahead of Greyhound in the Spring. (c) Chinese vegetables which grow very quickly and run to seed if you plant them too early. In this group I am including things like Chinese cabbage, Pak Choi, and Mizuna. With good weather these will last up to December. There are also plenty of things that you can increase by taking cuttings, and it is always worth visiting other gardens if you get the chance to get ideas as to how you can improve your own garden. Dear Sir With reference to your letters page in the July issue, it would be nice if Mr. Smith would cease his continual abuse of the result of the 1999 referendum. This showed that 72% of respondents said NO to a supermarket on the Riverside (Brett Works), whilst 76% said that they would not object to a supermarket in Hadleigh on a site other than the Riverside (the last seven words always removed in his letters, thereby changing the context completely). It appears that despite overwhelming opposition from NO in 1999, to continued rejection from the Town Council, through 645 letters of objection to the planning office, 1278 households (representing 75% of the adult population) objecting in a Hadleigh Society survey (figures included in the Committee papers), and over 350 letters to Councillors little heed has been taken of the views of residents. The Council Officers appear to have wanted this development from the outset, and seem determined to have it. Even their own District Retail Survey of 2008 and its recommendations have not apparently carried a lot of weight. Amongst these are statements like “ the current application exceeds the town need for retail space” – “any retail outlet considered should complement the existing retail provision”. This is our town and the residents will have to live with the ramifications of decisions affecting it. Few of the officers live here and most Councillors live elsewhere. Those Councillors who voted against the application appear to be the only individuals in power to show that they care a fig for resident’s views or what happens to the town. D. A. Parker

Dear Sir It is lovely to see the return of the flowers in the hanging baskets along the High Street again and, if I'm not mistaken, there are once again more than last year. I am certain that a substantial amount of work goes into this that we never see in both organising the basket locations, the planting, daily watering and, not the least, the fund raising. So a large round of thanks must go to Cyndy Hilton and her small team for making our High Street experience that little bit brighter. And thanks too to the businesses and organisations that contribute to the fund - not just the retail businesses but all those on the industrial estate, home based and surrounding area and not forgetting the charities and other community groups in Hadleigh. Lastly thanks to Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce for kicking it all off, contributions and "hosting" the project. Tony Addison Yes, well done Cyndy for organising this once again, a fantastic display and perhaps we should also congratulate Ray Brooks of Hollywood Landscapes for continually watering and looking after them - an excellent job! Dear Sir On 15th July there was a street collection on behalf of the Army Benevolent Fund in Hadleigh. First of all, many thanks to the many people who responded, to raise the immediate sum of £510.81p. The collection was made successful by the help of the chairman and members of Hadleigh 41 Club who gave up their time to do the collection. The Royal British Legion let us set up a pitch outside their building which let us chat to many people. Thank you Hadleigh. John Hart

Dear Sir On behalf of Help for Heroes I would like to thank Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association for their generous donation to the charity resulting from their annual May show proceeds. I also would express appreciation and thank's to Hadleigh Rugby Club for generously allowing a for sale stall at their annual beer festival which sold £373 of goods. All donations go directly to the funding of the much needed rehabilitation facilities for those service men and women affected as a result of their active service howsoever caused. Thank you, Fred Breyer

Hadleigh hearing specialists named best for customer service for second year One of Suffolk’s best performing companies is today celebrating after striking gold for the second time in a row at the 2011 Anglian Business Awards. The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at the Hadleigh Health Centre, received the prestigious award for Outstanding Customer Service, retaining the same title that they picked up last year. The glitzy ceremony, held at Trinity Park in Ipswich, was hosted by BBC television and radio presenter John Humphrys, and featured 40 Suffolk businesses fighting it out in 14 fiercely contested categories. The Hearing Care Centre, which established in 1998, by Managing Director Karen Finch, provides independent, holistic and ethical services to the hard of hearing in Suffolk. As well as its centre in Hadleigh, it operates from 13 further locations across the County. The award judges recognised that The Hearing Care Centre demonstrated that it has its customers at the heart of its business and deploys and manages its resources to most effectively meet the needs of its customer base. The company, who were also shortlisted for the Community Involvement award, recently received a 96 % satisfaction rating in its patient survey, showing that their customers really appreciate the high levels of service that they receive. Karen was so delighted to have been again recognised for their customer service, “I am still shocked that we have won an award after being up against some very tough opposition”, said Karen. “It would have been easy to become complacent having received this award last year, however my team have done a fantastic job over the past 12 months, and I cannot thank them enough.”

Earlier this year the Fleece in Boxford was closed and put on the market by pub company ‘Punch’. In May local business man John Norton bought the pub with the aim of reopening it as a village pub at the heart of the community. The Fleece was once famous for its regular Jazz, even hosting Jaime Cullum. It was also a bustling local with a busy public bar and a place for villages to enjoy a chat over a pint. When John bought the pub it had become a sad sight; the windows and doors were boarded up, the out buildings full of rubbish, leaking pipes, damp floorboards and freezers full of rotten food. John who also owns the White Horse in Edwardstone and Mill Green Brewery and makes his own Cider has exciting plans for the pub. With local pubs under threat from low cost Supermarket booze the pub needs to adapt. ‘Not only do we want to create a pub that reflects it’s age and historic place in this beautiful medieval village but we want it to support and cater for the needs of the local community.’ As renovation work goes on John’s wife Margret has been sourcing period furniture from local auctions. ‘We want the pub to feel classy but comfortable, using a mixture of appropriate furniture, making each room different, this will help us avoid the trap of becoming very monotone and boring’. John believes that the pubs need to stop competing with the supermarkets. ‘We have a beautiful building here and our plans are to make the interior of the pub special. To complement this we only want to sell local produce. Pubs are at the heart of our community but in so many cases the drinks they sell are imported and expensive, made buy multinationals with low production and high advertising costs. For a long time Supermarkets have been selling Lager brewed with the cheapest ingredients, Cider not made out of apples, tasteless spirits and Alco-pops at below cost price. John believes that pubs should not be trying to compete with them but should use local products that reflect the area they come from. ‘We make our own Beer with our own Suffolk Barley and Cider with Organic Suffolk apples. We have Ale, Lager, Spirits and Wines all made in Suffolk and they are all great!’ Johns other pub the White Horse in Edwardstone recently won the Greenest Country Award for ‘Greenest Pub’ ‘Pubs can’t just be pubs any more, at the White Horse we have camping facilities, holiday A clay pipe discovered accommodation, a wind turbine, solar under the floor boards panels and a brewery. The Fleece has a fantastic function room that needs to be used and a row of ancient stables not used since the last horse walked out in 1918, I’m sure with sensitivity they could be converted for a use which would benefit the local economy and help give the pub a secure future’ The renovation work is in full swing but John is still in the process of finding the ideal candidate to run the pub. ‘We need a person or a couple who are passionate about local and seasonal food and drink and have got experience in the pub trade’. ‘We will be opening the pub for drinks only at first, but anyone who wants to manage the pub needs to look at it as a long term project that will involve great local food, functions and possibly on-site letting rooms.’ Anybody interested in managing the pub should contact John on 01787 210899 or send a CV to john.norton@nortonorganic.co.uk

Hadleigh Cricket Club sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group The club’s new double bay net practice facility was officially opened on Sunday 17th July. The Chairman of Babergh District Council, Councillor David Wood, and Town Mayor Penny Cook cut the ribbon on the impressive £28,000 facility, in front of an assembled gathering of over 80 club members, sponsors, Vice Presidents and volunteers. The opening was an opportunity for Hadleigh CC to thank not only the organizations and individuals who had made the project possible, but to everyone who gives their time and support to the club, from tea ladies to coaches. A marquee was erected for the occasion, and the invited guests enjoyed a superb tea Chairman of Babergh provided by a specialist caterer. Unfortunately District Council, it was rather a wet afternoon, which curtailed Cllr David Wood, and the match between Hadleigh’s Under-15s and Town Mayor Penny Hilversum, a Dutch touring team, but it did not Cook officially open dampen spirits or prevent the nets from being Hadleigh CC's new net used both immediately before and as soon as practice facility they had been opened! The maddening midsummer weather has meant there has been a lack of cricket played in the last month or so. The 1st XI have only completed two matches, and remain in 3rd place in Division 2 of the Two Counties Championship. However, it has been a great month for the 2nd XI, who won all three games they played to lift themselves away from the bottom end of Division 4. To bowl runaway leaders Long Melford out for 101 was the highlight of their season so far, and they have followed it up with a nerve-jangling 1-run win over Needham Market and a 9 wicket defeat of Wivenhoe. Richard Checketts and Nadie Abdul have continued their incredible form, both still averaging over 50. The junior teams have now finished their league season, and the Under11s under manager Andrew Colcomb did brilliantly to reach the final of their competition in the Ipswich & District Youth league. The club is holding a music night at the ground on Friday September 2nd, with at least two live bands providing soul, blues and disco sounds and some surprise guests. Tickets priced £10 are available from promoter Buster ‘Goldsmith’ Tampion on 07841 917295 or russelltampion@btinternet.com . Farmer

The East shows talent at Tri Golf Finals day! Stoke by Nayland Golf Club hosted over 90 children last month, all hoping to become the East Region Tri Golf champions! Nine schools, each bringing a team of ten pupils travelled from counties all across the East Region after winning their local and county qualifiers. The rain didn’t seem to dampen their spirits as was shown in the pupil’s excitement and determination to score as many points as possible on the 8 station, Tri Golf putting and chipping skills challenge circuit. Along with the Tri Golf games, two of the PGA professionals at Stoke by Nayland, Sarah Graves and Andrew Tokely, gave each of the teams a mini coaching session on the driving range; letting them experience using “real” golf clubs and balls, many for the first time. The competitive spirit between the pupils (and the teachers!) was clear to see, with everyone wanting to win the coveted trophy and a place at the National Final. It was obvious the scores were going to be tight with some brilliant displays of talent from all schools involved. Whilst the scores were added up, Kevin Carpenter from KC Golf Shows put on an excellent trick shot show, demonstrating some unbelievable talent using oversized drivers, gym balls and a unicycle! With the tension suitably high, the winners of the competition were eventually announced as Mandeville Primary School from Hertfordshire who scored a massive 1399 points. Pear Tree Mead Primary school from Essex and Woodlands Primary School in Norfolk took the second and third place, with very respectable scores of 1320 and 1307. Mandeville Primary School will now go on to represent the East Region at the National Tri Golf Primary School Competition at Loughborough University on the 6th July and compete against teams from all regions of England, Scotland and Wales. Katie Cooper, East Region Development Officer for the Golf Foundation said “A brilliant day was had by all of the teams who competed; I was particularly impressed with their enthusiasm and competitive drive to win and the amount of talent shown by these young people! A big thank you to Stoke by Nayland Golf Club for hosting and providing a great backdrop for the event.”
