Surviving Winter in Hadleigh ‘Surviving Winter in Hadleigh’ is Hadleigh’s own charity and with all formalities completed we are now ready to move on. Are you prepared to let a neighbour suffer or even possibly die this winter? Some facts: 18,200 people in England and Wales died as a result of fuel poverty in 2013/14. Thirty were in Babergh D.C. (National Statistic Office). It is generally expected that over 350 of such deaths each year will be in Suffolk. Age U.K. Suffolk are the principal charity who administer the national Surviving Winter appeal to assist those who are in winter fuel poverty. One of the aims of SWH is to support Age U.K. where the need is required or any other causes identified, in addition to having our own SWH identity. It is a well known fact that warmth can be retained longer by the provision of thermal fleece items to meet individual circumstances. Where a person or household is already in receipt of extra fuel allowance support we will supply thermal packs upon application. Extra fuel will be provided on the same basis and will be paid direct by us to the supplier. Out of hours call out charges for emergency repairs to heating equipment will be paid direct to the
supplier by SWH, (any repair or routine maintenance costs are the owner's responsibility). There will be no vouchers or cash distributed as we will pay all suppliers direct. Our aim is to provide this service to Hadleigh and eight of the adjoining villages, we will include the three remaining larger villages when funds permit. The Met Office forecast is for a winter as snowy and cold as in 2009/10. The El Nino weather forecast is it could be as powerful as 1950. This was one of the snowiest winters ever. We are very pleased to have received our first tangible support from Mrs. Mellersh of Benton Street,Hadleigh. Would you contribute toward making life this winter easier for, or even preventing the possible death of, a friend or neighbour ? A contribution of £20 will provide a thermal pack for a two person household. Perhaps other local groups can assist from any surplus accounts that they may be able to donate from.
