Preparations for the 177th Hadleigh Show on Saturday 21st May are nearly complete and we hope you will join us for a great family day out at Holbecks Park.

The Grand Ring will welcome the Royal Signals White Helmets Display Team who will be performing spectacular feats of balance, death defying crossover rides and outstanding acrobatics. This year’s machinery demo will chart farm mechanisation from Suffolk horses to the newest computer driven machinery. Joining the Sheep Show in the Education area will be local bee keepers and Suffolk Wildlife Trust, on hand to offer advice and guidance on how to make your garden wildlife friendly. Art work from local schools in the Education tent will also follow this wildlife theme New this year is our cooking demo area where Malcolm Long, from Assington, and his team of chefs will be cooking up a host of dishes throughout the day using local produce. The Food Hall will also showcase the very best local food and drink producers, tempting you to sample and buy. A glimpse of the Manor of Hadleigh and the Town of Hadleigh in Suffolk from the mid 13th century until the late 14th century as revealed by the translations from Latin of the manorial documents from the Medieval Manor of Hadleigh

Look out for a new booklet entitled The Medieval Manor & Town of Hadleigh which will shortly be on sale. It should help to fill a gap in our knowledge of Hadleigh’s fascinating history in the medieval period.

The content derives from Margaret Translations, research & text by Margaret Woods Woods’s translations of over 200 medieval Latin documents from the Manor of Hadleigh manorial manuscripts, most of which are stored in Canterbury Cathedral Archives. It recounts briefly the early history of the Manor of Hadleigh and gives a glimpse of life on the manor and in the town during the 13th and 14th centuries. Since most of the Latin texts have never before been systematically translated, much of the information (along with Margaret’s display in St Mary’s church in September 2015) is publically available for the first time since the 14th century.

This is a colourful, readable and modestly priced booklet (£2) with proceeds going to local charitable organisations.

Initially it will be available at Keith Avis Newsagents, the Idler and the Tourist Point in St Mary’s Church.

Hadleigh Schools triumph at Art Competition The winners of the 2016 Hadleigh Show cover competition have been announced.

Each year HFAA ask local primary schools to design a front cover for the Hadleigh Show programme. This year judging took place at Hintlesham Golf Club just before Easter where over 150 designs from 6 local schools were on display.

The overall winner was Livvy Coghill from St Mary’s Primary, pictured below with her winning entry which will be printed on the 2016 Show programme. The very Livvy Coghill from St Mary’s close runner up was Orla from Primary with her winning design Hadleigh Community, whilst in KS1 Layton from Beaumont took the prize. Pupils from Hintlesham and Chattisham, Kersey & Whatfield primary schools were also amongst the top 20 winners.

The top 20 covers will be on display in the Education Tent at the Show along with other art work on the theme of Wildlife.

Howard at Dee Ludlow’s Hotel My word my dear readers, things seem so much better with the arrival of the longer evenings and brighter weather. Many of you will remember Dee Ludlow who had Hintlesham Hall. In fact, I see from my archives that Dee featured in a photograph with me in my column as long ago as 2008. Dee disposed of her interest at Hintlesham and now has a hotel near Cheltenham. You will remember that I had been to the Cheltenham Races in March. I arranged to drop in to see Dee upon my return journey. Dee sends her regards to friends and colleagues in and about Hadleigh. Dee’s Hotel is The Inn at Fossebridge Fosseway Stow Road Cheltenham GL54 3JS Tel. 01285 720721. The hotel is a 17th century Inn and found in four acres of gardens next to the River Coln. The hotel is in a lovely setting and also has some external suites; ideal for your chauffeur or staff that travel with you.

There is plenty of parking. The picture shows me in the bar area where I had my dinner. Why not take a few days off to visit and to relax in the surrounding countryside. I know that Dee would be glad to see you.

Some of you will have heard me one morning on Radio Suffolk speaking about a classic car outing that I had organised. A party of fifty and some twenty Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars visited the Heritage Museum at RAF Wattisham and were lucky enough to be invited to the Officers’ Mess for coffee. We went on to have the unbeatable fish and chips at The Brewer’s Arms at Polstead (Tel. 01787 210441). We then went to see the amazing collection of Rolls-Royce limousines and hearses of funeral directors R Gwinnell & Sons (Tel. 01206 868585). One’s last journey should surely be in a Rolls-Royce and few undertakers can offer that service. We closed the day with tea at The Saracen’s Head at Newton Green (Tel. 01787 379036) where we had wonderful cakes and scones and tea in bone china cups.

Hadleigh Steering Group Meeting 4th April 2016 Notes of Proposals/Decisions/Actions Main Agenda item: Security for our homes and businesses Updates: 1. Hadleigh Market: The first of a series of interviews about the stall holders appeared in the April Community News. Our thanks to Jan Devey who will be helping us all get to know them better.

2. The Corn Exchange: We are now aware that the sale of the property has fallen through. ACTION: It was agreed that the Chairman should approach SCC again. While the property remains on the market, an easement for temporary use of the foyer for a Visitor Information Centre would help support the development of Visitor services.

3. New Wool Towns Association The LEADER fund has been spoken of for a while but it has taken a long time to set up. The criteria are now clearly defined and this has finally motivated the Wool Towns Association to come into being. Hadleigh is not able to bid for money on its own; we are working with Lavenham, Long Melford and Clare to put together a joint bid as the Wool Towns. This is why we need to present a Tourism Strategy for the town in line with our other partners 4. OUR TIDY TOWN Group The Community, the Town and District Councils are all co-operating to help us achieve a clean, safe and attractive environment, both for residents and visitors. A number of litter hotspots have been cleared and are being monitored. Tidy Town Volunteers share in friendly banter while on route, and always round off their mission with coffee and cake. Hadleigh Dementia Friendly Business programme Tracey Loynds, Chair of the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance was able to explain the ways in which any business can help people with dementia. During discussions we had to acknowledge that the range of fraud and identity crimes may be diverting limited resources. The need to be vigilante, adopting consistent safety measures, can go a long way to deter thieves.

Rosa Simon Hadleigh Young Musician of the Year - Volunteers Needed On November 28th 2015 over fifty young musicians took part in the first ever Rosa Simon Hadleigh & District Young Musician of the Year competition, which was won by Lydia Clifford for the seniors and Thomas Simon for the juniors. It was so successful that we plan to make this an annual event, with the next competition to be held in February 2017. We would like to double the members of entrants if possible and make this event a town landmark. In order to do this we need help on the administrative side and desperately need volunteers who could form a committee to help further our ideas. If you feel you could offer your time and expertise to help us we would be very grateful. No musical skill required. We would like volunteers from the Hadleigh area, obviously, but if you are from the villages and, especially, the East Bergholt area, you would be very welcome too.

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers We had 13 join us for April’s walk despite a rather dismal day. Despite the weather everyone enjoyed a walk through quite varied countryside which ended up at the recently reopened Case Is Altered pub in Bentley for a pint and snack.

May’s walk on Saturday 14th May will start at St Mary’s School at 0930 and we will take the long route to Boxford in time to catch the 1415 bus back to Hadleigh. The route will take in Coram Street, Kersey Vale, William’s Green, Wicker Street Green, Pitches Mount, The White Horse Edwardstone for a quick pint, Home Farm Edwardstone, Sherbourne Street and ending up in Boxford. The walk is about 9.5 miles although there are a couple of break points where those not wishing to complete the entire walk can take shorter route by road into Boxford. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs.

Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

Churches in Hadleigh - Praying for Hadleigh The people of the churches in Hadleigh are committed to praying for our town.

Over the course of each year we plan to pray for every street in Hadleigh.

Week commencing Sunday 8th May - Ann Beaumont Way Close. Week commencing Sunday 15th May - Ansell Close and New Cut. Week commencing Sunday 22nd May - Benton Street, Carders Close and Cross Maltings. Week commencing Sunday 29th May - Raven Way, Cranworth Road and Dunton Grove.

It has been an eventful year for Hadleigh Community Transport Group (HCTG). Suffolk County Council (SCC) has totally revised the way it supports community transport. From 13th June we will provide transport for residents throughout the Babergh District (with the help of our friends at GoStart in Sudbury). We currently operate two Links services that, on request, bring passengers from outlying villages without a bus service to where they want to go within a defined area or to connect with bus services for onward travel. For those without access to transport of their own we operate the Dial-a-Ride (DAR) service in and around Hadleigh. We also operate the Wheels-withinWheels (WwW) service for those who cannot access normal transport or who require a door-to-door service.

With the revision in the provision by SCC we have acquired three minibuses for the new services, one for the door-to-door service and a smaller accessible car in addition to the three sixteen-seater minibuses that we already owned.

We operate services from Hadleigh to Manningtree and Ipswich, from Whatfield to Ipswich and from Ipswich to Shotley and shortly we will be running the Hadleigh to Stowmarket service: SCC sponsors these services. The vehicles are also used for contract work such as school transport and adults to day services and are available for group hire to organisations in and around Hadleigh e.g. for trips to the theatre or the seaside. HCTG are currently running a pilot operation taking passengers to Ipswich Hospital for appointments. This service is currently being reviewed. HCTG rely on the drivers we employ to help provide a high level of service and in return we have the policy of paying at least the Living Wage rather than just the legal minimum wage. The challenge in the next few years will be in maintaining and renewing our fleet with reducing support from SCC. Just to make sure that our manager did not have an idle moment we moved base during 2015! We are still on the Lady Lane Industrial Estate. Our committee are local people from Hadleigh and Lavenham: we are seeking more volunteers to serve on it.

Suffolk Libraries launches new scheme to support young people’s mental health Suffolk Libraries is getting behind a national scheme to support young people with mental health issues. ‘Reading Well for young people’ is a new scheme which provides expert information and a recommended reading list to help tackle some of the mental health and wellbeing issues that young people face. ‘Reading Well for young people’ is aimed at 13-18 year-olds and provides high-quality information, support and advice on a wide-range of issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and self-harm, and difficult life pressures, like bullying and exams. It’s almost a year since we started Spirit Fitness.

As our membership numbers have been increasing we now have a great variety of classes on offer. These include Kettlercise, Metafit, Pump, Pilates, Combat, Zumba, HIIT and Core strengthening classes. By May we will have a circuit class in our bigger hall and also balance classes. In June we will be expanding our timetable even further and including the beach body classes, P90X, Insanity and Piyo. Classes are held weekday mornings and evenings and also on Saturdays. In addition to all this, affordable Personal Training is available to all members as well as non members. There is room for children to sit and watch classes if need be. We are a small friendly welcoming group offering extensive diet and fitness advice to all our members and all abilities are very welcome. We have Tanita Scales so members can have body analysis and goals set if required. Come along and meet us or even watch a class or two and see what you think. Our aim is to have lots of fun in our small studio with no mirrors, no bright lights.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Kenneth is busy promoting dog chipping, leaving me to tell you about two feline families that arrived at SESAW recently.

A kind gentleman rescued Chilli, who had been living rough on an industrial estate, just before she gave birth to a litter of kittens. Sadly another pregnant puss lost some of her litter due to a viral infection. The remaining kittens are now fighting for their lives. We are also expecting babies in the garden since the blue tits laid eggs in Ron's new bird box. Fear not dear reader, my interest in our feather residents extends only to bird watching from the comfort of a sunny windowsill.

Barbara had a good day at her Bonanza Sale in Stratford St. Mary last month. The village gave SESAW a warm welcome and £445 was raised. Staunch Hadleigh supporters Peter and Julie Hedges with their dog Millie were among the many visitors.

Over £3200 was raised at our Spring Sale in Long Melford thanks to more than 200 visitors and our wonderful volunteers who helped make the event such a success.

How much can we rely upon Pre-Nuptial Agreements?

Over the past few years, it has been common for engaged couples to enter into pre-nuptial agreements, with the aim of protecting their assets, if they decide to get a divorce. It had been understood that whilst pre-nuptial agreements are not binding in this country, the Family Courts in England and Wales do consider these documents when dividing financial assets during a divorce.

A new guide, ‘Sorting out Finances on Divorce’, written by a team of Judges and lawyers has stated that pre-nuptial agreements can only be followed if the agreement is deemed fair and it meets the needs of each of the spouses’ When making a decision as to how the finances of a separated couple should be divided during a divorce, the Courts will usually try to ensure that both spouses’ are able to continue to live a similar lifestyle to what they enjoyed during the marriage.

The new guide suggests that it is more likely for a pre-nuptial agreement to be followed by the Courts when there are plenty of assets available to meet both spouses’ needs. It also states that a pre-nuptial agreement might be of use when a spouse hoped to keep a specific item of sentimental value, such as a family heirloom or pet.

It is important to remember that when entering into a pre-nuptial agreement, there is no guarantee that any of the terms included within the agreement will be upheld by the Court. The Court’s overall objective during divorce proceedings is to ensure that both spouses are adequately provided for and the assets available are divided in a fair manner.

When the Court is asked to make a decision in regard to the division of assets, various factors are considered, such as the discrepancy in the parties’ incomes and whether either party has a mental or physical disability. A pre-nuptial agreement will not necessarily take into account these factors at the time of a separation. The importance of these factors will vary during a marriage and they can only be considered at the point of separation.

If you are considering entering into a pre-nuptial agreement, it is important that you obtain the appropriate legal advice. If you are required to rely upon your pre-nuptial agreement during a divorce, it is important that the document has been drafted correctly so that the Court can decide whether to follow the terms of the agreement or not.

The sportive is named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. The 60 and 32 mile routes will take riders past landmarks including Gayford family home on Angel Street, RAF Wattisham where he served as commander and his final resting place in Naughton.

Richard Holdaway, Sportive Director said, “We had tremendous feedback from those who took part in last year’s event and from British Cycling. Everyone commented that it was well run and the routes were interesting and varied.

Of course, we had fantastic weather and we’re doing our best to ensure that we have more of the same this year.”

New Meteor Shower On New Years just past a new meteor shower was detected from New Zealand using two sites and 32 cameras that are constantly pointing towards the sky.

That night, 59 meteors were seen of which 21 could be traced back to an origin from the southern constellation of Volans, The Flying Fish. The next night 2 more were detected. The new shower has been given the name the Volantids.

This shower has never before been seen in recorded history.

Now, you may be thinking why we should be talking about this when it is so far away and can't be seen from our skies; well, the implications of such an event hold possible global implications as we'll see in a while.

Firstly,on any given night you can expect to see a few meteors that will randomly zip across the sky, these are known as 'sporadic' meteors, and are the result of the Earth sweeping up debris as it travels around its orbit in space.

These meteors are small dust particles no bigger than the size of a pea and some of these meteors are man-made junk that is orbiting our planet , an idea of this can be seen in the graphic . Nearly 70 years of rocket launches has created this rather shocking ring of debris around our planet. The second cause of meteors is when the Earth passes through an organised stream of debris as can be seen from the other graphic, and this is the cause of the new meteor shower.

And so we come to the potential problem. As you can see we pass through a swathe of comet dust to create the showers and we know at any time where the parent comet is that creates the shower, and so can predict any future risks of a Earth-comet collision. No such risk is going to come from the comets we know of that give us our yearly displays, but with this new shower we have the problem of not knowing the parent of the shower.

4,000 comets are documented in our databases but none have the same orbital elements as the shower which means that a potential comet could be lurking in our vicinity which could cause us a big problem.

Before anyone panics, the good news is the stream won't intersect the Earths' orbit until December 2023 so we have 7 years to find the parent and determine any risks, if indeed there are any, so fear not... we will find this rogue comet.

News from Whatfield School Whatfield School celebrated Easter at the lovely St Margaret’s church last month, after walking through the village in our luminous jackets, villagers and families were treated to the Easter story through song, poetry and artwork. The pupils sang beautifully, and the service was an incredibly uplifting start to the Easter weekend.

Back at school we organised Easter Egg hunts around the school, enjoying chocolate treats. Class 1 designed their own Easter eggs and then were amazed to find that a mallard duck had decided to choose the Early Years Area to lay a huge clutch of eggs! The mother duck has been sitting on them all week, and we are now waiting excitedly to see if we get to meet some ducklings. If we do I am sure they will feel very much at home in our lovely grounds.

Class 1 have been doing a lot of their learning outside the classroom, and enjoying exploring our fantastic grounds. One day we will work out how much space each child has in addition to their classroom area. That will test our maths!

Whatfield School were excited to hold their first ever ‘Curiosity Café’ last term. This was an opportunity for parents to come into school and work with their children. We decided to focus on reading, and teachers chose a range of books they thought the children would enjoy. Parents and children listened to the stories, read the books and enjoyed participating in activities together. The feedback was great, so we are planning another café for this term.

As we are in collaboration we often find reasons to get together with our partner school, Bildeston. Whatfield and Bildeston have been running the golden mile over this year, and so far pupils have run more than 1500 miles. We still aim to run to Rio for the start of the Olympics, and as you can see, pupils enjoyed running for sports relief in March this year, getting fitter as well as raising money for a worthy cause.

We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I am very proud to support a Government that on 1st April introduced the brand new National Living Wage. In the Babergh district alone approximately 1,600 workers saw their wage rise to £7.20 per hour. There have been two main concerns about this policy. On the one hand, some have said it is not really a ‘living wage’ because it is not generous enough; others have rightly emphasised the cost to businesses.

Just to put the amount of the new wage into context, it will mean a £900 annual cash increase for a full-time worker on the current National Minimum Wage.

However, the true test of how generous the National Living Wage is can surely best be proven by international comparison. Comparing purchasing power between countries is notoriously difficult but the Economist, one of the most respected publications on financial matters, uses a ‘Big Mac Index’ – crudely, it’s about how many Big Macs you get for your buck, so to speak. Using this index to compare European countries, the UK’s new National Living Wage, comes second only to Luxembourg.

Of course, generosity comes at a price which is ultimately borne by employers and, where the cost increase can be passed on, their customers. I have been contacted by lots of businesses who are concerned about the cost and as a small business owner by background I sympathise. However, we cannot have it both ways – a wage that is generous and at the same time not costly. Our country has long had an effective minimum wage through the benefits system.

In the long term, this measure should reduce benefit dependency and increase productivity per head. Ultimately, there is no point denying that businesses are going to have to bear this cost, but overall, I believe it would have been politically impossible after the devastating impact of the 2008 recession to let low pay drift ever lower. The challenge is to build a stronger economy overall that can carry this cost and deliver sustainable higher wages for all.

Hadleigh & District Probus Club The object of the Club, established in 1998, is "To promote fellowship amongst retired and semi-retired professional and business men". We meet for lunch on the third Wednesday of each month at The George, High Street, Hadleigh, where Tori and Paul make us welcome and provide us with excellent meals. This year we again held our customary Annual Dinner in the Town Hall Dining Room on 6th April. The turnout of members and guests were well served by Chaplin Catering of Naughton.

Following previous happy experiences we visited the Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club again last year for our Ladies Lunch on 12th August. Our high expectations were well met by an excellent meal in elegant surroundings.

We had two lunchtime speakers during the year. In July Mike Evans, Strategic Director (People) was our guest, ably standing in for Charlotte Adan, Chief Executive of Babergh District Council. In February Ashley Cooper, of Hill Farm, Gestingthorpe, gave us a talk on agriculture in the area. (Hill Farm is also well known for the Roman remains found there.) We usually invite the Hadleigh Town Mayor to give us a short address: this year the Mayor, being a member and former Chairman, thought that we had seen enough of him already!

Sibling feud highlights importance of making a Will We may not know which day will be our last but we can make life much easier for those we leave behind. Planning for the ultimate eventuality by writing a Will ensures your assets and estate go to the people you choose – but failing to do so can leave your loved ones significantly under-prepared for the impact of your death.

In one recent case, a lack of a Will consigned two siblings to a decade-long struggle over their elderly father’s estate, causing unnecessary misery and wasting tens of thousands of pounds. When the 84-year-old died suddenly in 2005 from a stroke without making a Will, his son and daughter argued over who should receive what of his £550,000 estate. His son claimed that his father had promised him that he would be the sole beneficiary and that he would sign a Will to that effect before his death.

The son argued that, in reliance on his father’s word, he had devoted his life to working in the family business, caring for his parents and improving their home, in which he still lived. His sister, however, pointed out that her brother had received lifetime gifts from their father worth £470,000 and accused him of being greedy.

The High Court found that the son had not been given an assurance that he would inherit the whole of his father’s estate. He was, however, entitled to 20% of the equity in the family home to reflect the money and effort he had put into constructing a self-contained flat within it. He would have to share the remainder of the estate equally with his sister.

However, inheritance tax and the costs of the prolonged proceedings and the administration of the estate meant that the son would have to move out of the family home so that it could be sold – a fate which was completely unavoidable had his father written a Will.

Fidelis Activity News Secret Places Every city has its secret places and over the years Rodney Tibbs seems to have discovered all those hidden locations in Cambridge.

As a lifelong journalist on the Cambridge Evening News and a keen gardener it was not difficult for him to ferret out the most obscure gardens the city has to offer.

It was clear from his beautiful photos that most of them were in the heart of the city often separated from a busy road by a single brick wall.

Kersey Mill Newsletter National Mills Weekend is the annual festival of our milling heritage and provides you with a fantastic opportunity to visit mills, many of which are not usually open to the public. This year it will take place on the 14th and 15th May, Kersey Mill will be open together with other wind and water mills across the country. This year’s theme is vintage power and we are expecting a number of visitors to arrive on or with some vintage power. If the weather is kind we may be privileged to have a Foden Steam Lorry pay us a visit.

Until the advent of the steam engine, wind and watermills provided the only source of power for many processes- from making flour, paper, and cloth to hammering metal and extracting oil to cutting wood and pumping liquids.

ER&F Turner were located at St Peter’s and Grey friars Works Ipswich The company was established in 1837 by Walton Turner and the name Bond Turner and Hurwood. In 1842 the first steam engine was built and used to drive the St Peter’s Works. In 1847 Walton died and 1849 the first portable engine was produced to their own design. By 1851 the other partners had dropped out and the son of Walton, Edward carried on the business until being joined by his brother Frederick and the frim became known as ER & F Turner.

On the 22nd March Tuesday Together Tuesday held their Easter Cream Tea Event which was a delightful afternoon. Serendipity Choir performed at the event and guests were treated to delicious cream tea Together Tuesday supports people in Hadleigh to live well with dementia, welcoming people with Dementia and their family and friends to the group.

Together Tuesday runs weekly during term time at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure between 2.00pm – 4.00pm Jill Mason, Group Co-ordinator for Together Tuesday said: “The Easter Cream Tea was a great opportunity for the wider community to attend Together Tuesday to celebrate Easter with our group users. The choir was well received once again making for a joyous afternoon.”

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Ha, at last the herd is swinging into summer mode. I can see piles of horsehair blowing across the yard as the ponies shed their winter coats, and the helpers frantically sweeping it all up after grooming their bodies.

Neither Babs nor I get groomed of course, but we like to watch. Many of our disabled riders learn how to look after their ponies, and giving them a good brush is an enjoyable part of horsecare. In the photo Parys waits her turn. Here she is wearing a dab of mud over her right eye, the latest fashion, and she is standing on the now dried up mud at her field gate. The grass is growing at last.

At The Centre volunteers get very fond of the people they teach. Our Wednesday instructor, Ann, has written this about one of her riders: ‘Kesiah is an extremely bright 6 year old girl who has been riding at The Shelly Centre for just over 6 Months. Kesiah is blind and microcephalic. From her first day of riding with us we have all been smitten. Kesiah has so much to say we hardly get a word in, she’s always asking questions about her surroundings, helpers and her pony. She loves riding April who can be quite ' active ' but she finds this all the more exciting. We asked Kesiah what she liked most about riding: “I love April because she has soft fur. I get really excited when I know it is a riding day. I like playing games and finding things to feel and working out what they are " Ann looks forward to Kesiah becoming a confident rider, listening to instructions (could be tricky!) and most importantly having fun.’

Talking of having fun, the people who come here on Mondays and Fridays are holding a Fun Dog Show here on Saturday 9th July. Keep the date free, especially if you have children and grandchildren! There will be classes for waggy tails, prettiest bitch, handsomest dog, best young handler, fancy dress and more, plus a BBQ, cake stall and games for the children. You can find out more on our website and the posters will be going up soon. Let’s hope the weather behaves itself for this special event; I shall certainly enjoy the novelty of having dogs to look at for a change!

Over eighty children from the area took to the stage at Ormiston Sudbury Academy to showcase their talent in song, dance and acting. Attending Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts (MLSPA) at Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston, the students worked incrediby hard learning many routines which were performed across two shows to family and friends at a brand new venue for MLSPA. Principal Miss Lesley said "I raised the bar very high this time and we hit it!

With professional sound, lighting and even confetti bombs, the children were never phased and produced outstanding performances from 'Snoopy The Musical', ''Seussiscal ' and Little Shop of Horrors' to name a few. Members from my adult class also took to the stage - so the show had performers from just 3 yrs old to 57 yrs old and they were all outstanding. The children have gained so much confidence and talent and become 'triple threat' performers in singing, dancing and acting. It was hard work but worth every minute. I've never felt so proud".

At the Centre Stage show, an "All Round Achievment Award" was presented to Rebecca Fox (pictured with Miss Lesley). This was given in recognition of the past year for her attendance, behaviour, improvement, dedication, hard work, ability and grooming. She is always happy, always tries very hard, never says "I can't do that", and is kind and throughtful to others, so a big congratulations to Rebecca! This is new award that has been implemented and will be presented at shows for BOTH schools in future!

MLSPA have some exciting things happening; there is in the introduction of basic tap starter classes for children 12+ years at the Bildeston school, as well as the introduction of LAMDA lessons at BOTH schools and are pleased to welcome Susan Lockwood (pictured) who has trained at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has a wealth of experience in teaching drama and voicework and is also currently training to become a LAMDA examiner. If anyone in the local area is interested in taking LAMDA lessons on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis, please do not hesitate to contact MLSPA to find out more.

The students now look forward to an exciting workshop planned in July and a MLSPA family outing to see the "Rock and Roll" panto at the New Wolsey Theatre and of course THEIR PERFORMANCE in their next show!

Living with Dying – May 14th 2016 in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh and the Guildroom May is here and our Living with Dying event happens on Saturday 14th!

Our overriding aim and wish is to help you in some way with this difficult subject. There is help out there when we need it but how much better it would be for us and our loved ones if we prepared for the end of our lives as much as we can beforehand? Being prepared takes away a lot of the stress for those we leave behind at a time when they are feeling emotionally vulnerable.

There are 2 times, the first at 11am and the second at 2pm. It would be helpful, although not essential, if you could register your interest at their stand in St Mary’s during the morning to help with numbers and tours will leave from St Mary’s at the relevant time. The tours will last approx. 30-40 minutes so you can plan your visit around any Masterclasses you might also wish to attend.

The Town Council have offered to take you on a tour of Friars Road Cemetery so if you are considering your options regarding your final resting place this could be very helpful. Meet Philip at the main Cemetery gate at 12 noon.

There will also be a stand on the day in St Mary’s where representatives of the Town Council will be able to show you their plans for the new Green Cemetery in Hadleigh and answer any questions you may have.

On Saturday 14th there will be over 17 stands for you to browse.

Local organisations, charities and businesses that work in the caring professions will be available for you to talk to and ask those important questions you may have.

In addition – we will have a Memory Tree in the church. If you would like to bring a small photograph of a loved one that you would like to hang on the tree for us all to remember, then please do. If this is not possible we will have card and ribbon for you to create something with their name on instead.

Hadleigh Orchestra This year our summer concert will be held at Stoke-by-Nayland church on Sunday June 12th. at 6.30 p.m. As I expect you will know, the acoustics in this church are outstanding and we are very much looking forward to playing there again, and are grateful for the opportunity to do so. Our programme will include the first three movements of Beethoven’s 8th. Symphony (with a number of other pieces played between the first and 2nd. movements). Other popular works will include the ‘Entry of the Gladiators’, Pachelbel’s ‘Canon’ and ‘Danse Macabre’.

As usual, everybody is welcome and we do not charge for entrance, but we do ask for a contribution as you leave which goes towards the cost of the concert and a donation to the church.

End of Life and Death are both subjects that some find difficult to face but it is relevant to everyone, whatever your age.

Samantha has kindly agreed to tell you her story…

I was 23 years old, living in Northern Ireland and conducting the ‘normal’ student life. All consumed with thoughts of my final year and the looming dissertation, I returned to England to visit my dad who had been in hospital.

The day before I am due to depart and commence my final year of study, I receive the call. “It’s cancer.” The nurse’s tentative words took a moment to sink in. Eventually I ask “How long does he have?” I receive in reply “At least a year, maybe longer. However your father is unable to be treated.”

That is when it all began. The cracks in my foundations started to appear and as the days and weeks moved on they grew in length and width.

I returned to university but awoke every morning with the real fear and thought of “is it going to be today?” Christmas came and went, all seemed to be going okay. Dad was deteriorating but that was to be expected. I returned to university to sit my exams and just before my final semester is about to begin, I receive the second most life changing call. “Your father is unconscious and will not make it through the night”. I was sat in my bedroom at 1.30am on January 16th in Northern Ireland; my dad’s body is laying in a hospital 580 miles away in Barnstaple. I travelled all through the night but I did not make it in time. What followed after his death was that I would be left unable to continue with my degree. I dropped out of university with only one term left of a three year course.

I returned to my dad’s house, which felt empty without him. I was his only child and my parent’s had been separated since I was young. I was his next of kin. At 23 years old I was now responsible for clearing out and selling my dad’s possessions, arranging a funeral and selling a house. I also had to slog my way through his paperwork so I could inform all those who needed to know. What I found in the paperwork made the whole situation even worse. My dad had a ‘Do-It-Yourself Will’; the only problem was that he had not filled it in. I was a clueless 23 year old, who had just lost her dad and now there was no Will to help me.

My dad had not planned at all for the end of his life. I organised a funeral of which I have no idea if he would have liked. I gave away most of his stuff, but for all I know he may of wanted his possessions given to someone or donating to a certain charity. I plead with all who are reading this, especially single parents – please prepare for the end of life. Death is a devastating time, but the stress and pressure can be eased for your loved ones.

Easter The end of the spring term was very busy! Thanks to the Parent Support group for organising an Easter disco and an Easter tea party after school. These events are an important part of our school community and everyone enjoys taking part! The whole school celebrated Easter at a service at St Mary’s Church. Thanks to Martin and Daniel for their talk on the meaning of Easter and the symbols that help us think about it. Once again, we held achievement assemblies to celebrate the children’s achievements both in and out of school. It was great to see so many parents and grandparents joining us to celebrate children’s talents and successes from sporting performances and trophies to certificates for good behaviour. Well done to all the children for their hard work during the spring term.

French Cafés Throughout the school, parents have been in to experience our ‘French Cafés’. The children have shared a range of activities with parents, including role-playing a French market, making models of the Eiffel Tower and singing French songs. It was lovely to see lots of parents experiencing French with the children and we all enjoyed the French food on offer!

Bikeability Training The Year 5 children enjoyed taking part in ‘Bikeability’ training.

They learned about looking after their bikes and how to cycle safely on the roads. They were are super group, listening well and proving themselves to be very responsible and sensible.

Luckily, the weather was on our side! All the children passed their assessment – well done Year 5!

Colchester Zoo The children in Years 4 and 5 had a super experience at Colchester Zoo. The theme was ‘African Animals’ and the children enjoyed an informative talk about the animals, which included the chance to touch elephant teeth and tusks. As a special treat, the children had the opportunity to learn how to give checkups and injections to chimpanzees (using big teddies!). Everyone had a great time and the children were excellent representatives of the school, behaving well and showing lots of curiosity about the world!

Lodge an interest with Orchard Barn The building now known as Orchard Barn dates from the 17th Century and has probably gone through different uses and been repaired, updated, modified several times over the years.

From old maps and the remains of collapsed buildings we know there were two adjoining structures on its west side. These were cart lodges used for storing farm machinery and tools under cover.

We have recently received planning permission to reconstruct these cart lodges. We plan to use them as craft rooms. Hadleigh Evening WI Hadleigh Evening WI hosted the 2016 Three Valleys Annual Group meeting which was held in the Hadleigh United Reform Church. They were joined by their WI Adviser Sue Bevan and ladies from Boxford, Elmsett and Aldham, Leavenheath, Nayland, Polstead and Stoke by Nayland, the Group WIs. A representative from each gave a short account of the highlights of their year. Each WI entered the competition which involved skills of flower arranging, embroidery and cake baking. The winner was Stoke by Nayland. Sarah Simonds owner of the clothing company Artichoke introduced a fashion show of their clothing range modelled by WI members from the Group WIs. This light hearted parade demonstrated that their clothes looked good on real women, with less than perfect figures.

At the monthly meeting Hadleigh were joined by members from Elmsett and Aldham WI, for a discussion lead by WI Adviser Sue Bevan, on the two 2016 WI national resolutions. The first dealt with appropriate care in hospital for people with dementia. The second the importance of avoiding food waste in Supermarkets. Both will be voted on at the WI national meeting which this year will be held in Brighton. Hadleigh president Rae Stapleton will be attending as our delegate.

We will be happy to welcome visitors to our tent at the Hadleigh May Show on 21st. There will be the usual range of tasty homemade produce. In addition a plant stall and for those interested in the WI, an opportunity to meet the Federation chairperson and WI Advisers.

Next monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting will be held in the Seminar suite above the Hadleigh library on Tuesday 17th May starting 7.30pm. The speaker Richard Wright on the subject of pigs and recycling. Visitors and hopefully new members will be welcome.

News from The Station The new County Policing model for Suffolk Police has been in operation since April 4th. These changes have been made to the structure of local policing and the way in which we deliver our services to the public.

There are now 9 locality teams strategically located across the county who will work with partners to deal with local priorities.

Hadleigh Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) are currently based at the police station in Hadleigh.

Between 13th and 28th May Sudbury will come alive with art!

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, Winch and Blatch, The Angel Wine Bar and The Art and Framing Centre, artists living in and around Sudbury have been given the opportunity to display their work as a prelude to the ever popular Suffolk Open Studios event which takes place throughout June and when Artists Around Sudbury have their Art Trail weekend on the 4th and 5th June when all ten artists and makers open their studios to the public on the same two days - be sure not to miss this golden opportunity!

We arrived at school at the very early time of 4:30am, to catch our coach to Luton Airport, ready for our flight to Germany. Upon arrival, we travelled to our hotel, before setting off to our first destination, the TV Tower – a building 368m high. On our second day, we participated in a walking tour, where we saw the remnants of the Berlin Wall and Germany’s Parliamentary Buildings.

We visited Alexa, had a tour of the Unterwelten, a WW2 Air Raid Shelter. Our outings also included a visit to the Topography of Terror, a museum which had been built upon the former location of the Gestapo and SS HQ, followed by an open-top boat trip. Day three, we visited the Reichstag, and went in its glass dome, where we could see the wonderful views of Berlin at night. On our final day, we visited another museum, the DDR, focussing on East Germany whilst the Berlin wall was standing. We then flew home to Britain, to our comfy beds to get a well-deserved night’s sleep. Overall, the trip was a great opportunity.

As Charlie Kebell said “it was a great way to experience and learn about German culture”.

The Fete Of #Hadfest Lies In Your Hands Year 10 pupils are continuing to plan Hadfest after school on Wednesdays. So far, the pupils have been working on marketing for the event –poster designs are now being created. A line-up for the main stage is also in development; the pupils have managed to get local band ‘Polar Collective’ and the school’s very own Jess Simmons to perform. Several pupils have stated that the organising is extremely enjoyable and is developing their skills.

Apprenticeship Success Well done to Jasmine Robinson, 11D, for achieving her goal of securing an Early Years Apprenticeship post at Hadleigh Community Primary School.

Library News The school library has undergone a transformation. Shelving has been moved which has opened up and modernized the space. The non-fiction books are modern and relevant to the pupil’s learning. The fiction books are shelved into genres with an additional shelving area for our ‘Star Recommended Reads’ which consists of accessible classics and award-winning books.

Along with the introduction of Accelerated Reader for Year 7, the library is embracing modern technologies as well as physical copies of books. Pupils have access to an iPad and Kobo e-book reader to read stories on. There are also computers available for pupils to use. Pupils have commented that the “books are easier to see and find” and that the “library now looks open and spacious.”

Accelerated Reader Year 7 pupils are currently engaged in our new Accelerated Reader reading programme. The pupils read a book, take an online quiz, and get immediate feedback. The pupils were given a test at the beginning of the year to work out their ZPD level, which is their ‘Zone of Proximal Development.’ Pupils develop reading skills most effectively when they read appropriately challenging books – difficult enough to keep them engaged but not so difficult that they become 38

frustrated. As pupils are re-tested, their ZPD ranges increase and broaden so they continue to read suitably challenging literature. We hope that Accelerated Reader will motivate our pupils to make progress with their reading skills and improve their literacy skills through reading for pleasure. Most pupils are finding the challenge enjoyable. Jess Miller said, “the quizzes encourage you to read as you have something to aim for and achieve”.

H-Factor auditions During April the auditions for Hadleigh High School’s version of ‘the X-Factor’ were held for students to unleash their talent In front of the judges. There are four teams for the finalist to compete in, each one led by one of the judges. The groups are; Boys, Groups, Year 7&8 Girls and Year 9&10 Girls led by #TeamBetts, #TeamDay, #TeamCalvino and #TeamRichards. There are 15 finalists with the final being held on Tuesday, 10th May at 7pm, being judged by ‘Polar Collective’, a local band.

Going for Silver Students in Year 11 have been working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. Their most recent expedition lasted for four days, and over the course of their journey they travelled roughly 46km. A total of 13 students and 3 members of staff went on the trip in two different groups.

The weather, on their practise expedition, was described as being wet and cold, with it sometimes reaching as low as -3C. This practice expedition is in preparation for their real expedition which will be happening in July.

Year 9 Science Gifted and Talented Bildeston During March, 4 talented Year 9 students were picked to lead an environment day for students from primary schools across South Suffolk. After starting off with a meet and greet between the various schools, our students led several fun activities, including identifying insects from a nearby pond and a game of T-rex-based tag. Whilst each activity was designed to be fun and interactive, they each had their own scientific message behind them (yes, even the T-rex Tag). At the end of the day, the Year 6s had learned all about the wonders of science and the 4 pupils from Hadleigh High had gained valuable leadership skills which will undoubtedly come in handy in the future.

Conservation Area/Vegetable Garden With the onset of spring there is a lot of seed sowing and planting which needs to be done in a relatively short space of time. Work continued through the Easter break to try and get ahead.

The vegetable area was dug over and recycled compost (originally household green waste from the Babergh area) was incorporated into the soil.

Peas and broad beans seeds were planted to start off this year’s vegetable growing.

Within the Conservation Area we finished clearing an area of Ivy and Cow Parsley and sowed some grass seed. This grass area, when established, will remain uncut providing an area for the egg laying and larval stages of Butterflies, such as the Ringlet, Meadow Brown and Speckled Wood.

Part of our bid to secure the £500 award from The Captain Planet Foundation was to make improvements to our Conservation Area with a focus on Butterflies. By providing nectar rich flowers for the adult butterflies and specific food plants for their caterpillars, we hope to see an increase in numbers and species of butterflies here at Hadleigh High School.

As a way of making our Conservation Area a much more useful teaching resource and an area of learning for our pupils our aim is to create an 'Informed Nature Trail'. This will consist of a series of information signs highlighting key animal and plant species and the different types of habitats we have created for wildlife.

Our Year 9 pupils will be very much involved in producing the information for these signs using their researching and computer skills. The wood we used to make the signs has been painted and I would like to take this opportunity to thank TAYLOR MADE JOINERY for their very generous donation of the wood.

Their generosity has saved us a considerable amount of money enabling us to achieve far more within our Conservation Area.

At HHS we record sightings of Butterflies which are then sent to the Suffolk Branch of Butterfly Conservation.

The Sustainable Tourism award was presented to sister directors, Susanna Rendall and Tamara Unwin by Amanda Bone of Visit Suffolk, who sponsored the category. With the installation over the past two years of the company’s anaerobic digester, wood-fuelled bio mass boilers and solar panels, Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa and Country Lodges are now virtually selfsustainable and these innovations demonstrate both the company’s respect for the environment and its progressive values.

Managing Director, Susanna Rendall said “Winning this award means a great deal to all of us working in the business and helps to make our hotel guests and visitors to the county aware that it is possible to run a successful tourism business by harnessing natural energy whilst still protecting the beautiful environment around us.”

The family’s sister company, Boxford Suffolk Farms/Peake Fruit gained a “Highly Commended” award at the event, for the county’s Greenest Farming Business, with Euston Farms winning the category.

Dear Sir, I should like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the person, or persons who took it upon themselves to break into the Sue Ryder shop in Hadleigh and steal our meagre float and donations box between close of business on Friday March 5th and opening up on Saturday March 6th. I had been meaning to give the shop a bit of a makeover while my manager was taking a well-earned break; this was the incentive I needed to rally the troops and shimmy the stock round a bit. Naturally I would have preferred it if you had used the conventional method of entry, you know, come in through the front door during shop opening hours, perhaps even spending a bit of money towards a good cause, as opposed to helping yourself to what was not rightfully yours.

Perhaps we might even have had a conversation about the services offered by Sue Ryder Care, including the Synergy Café for people with dementia, life-line counselling for those with emotional issues and high quality care for people with neurological and/or physiological conditions. Oh but what am I thinking? This would imply you have a moral conscience. Silly me!

Of course, were you to be detained at Her Majesty’s pleasure, I would be more than happy to go down the rout of restorative justice and talk to you about what you put me and my colleagues through that weekend, together with further detail about what we stand for here at Sue Ryder Care. It’s a discussion I very much look forward to.

Dear Sir, I have just received my copy of the Hadleigh Town Guide 2016 and I always read it with interest. I moved to Hadleigh in 1980 into No. 9 Church Street.

According to the deeds Nos. 9 and 11 Church Street were built in 1827 in the reign of George IV, 10 years before Victoria came to the throne. They were built

by Thomas Hood of Lindsay and No. 9 was lived in by his family until the 1950s.

There was a wooden scaffold pole in the garage with the name Thomas Hood burnt onto it.

It is hoped that this puts the misunderstanding to rest, as even the Millenium Roundel states that they are Victorian Villas. In any case they are two fine houses of the period, more often seen in London and such cities. I certainly enjoyed my time at No. 9 and sadly left in 1994.

I was recently awarded the Hadleigh Mayor’s Award for ‘service to the town’ for my involvement with the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project. I am delighted to receive the award and thank the Mayor for his kind words. However, I must also say that the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project is a community wide project open to everyone in the community.

Over the last two years, many people have been involved and have made a significant contribution and so I would like to share this award with the following; Nigel Crisp & Jeff Ward, Hadleigh Royal British Legion, Hadleigh Society, Hadleigh Sea Scouts, Hadleigh schools and of course the many residents and relatives who have links to those who fought in the Great War and who have shared their stories with us. The project continues and this year we will be at the May Show and have a summer exhibition to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. The project is set to run through to November 2018 and so there is still a lot of research to carry out.

KS2 Quick Sticks Hockey Event A team of KS2 children were selected to represent the school in a Quick Sticks hockey tournament at St Joseph College in Ipswich. Staff and parents went along to support our team who had a great time and enjoyed competing against schools in the county and schools in our pyramid of schools. Our team came 3rd- well done!! They are now through to the finals, to be held on 20th April.

PSHEe Enrichment Day On Wednesday 3rd February pupils from Key Stage 2 took part in a PSHEe activity day. Pupils discussed ‘Rites of Passage’ and recorded significant events in their lives so far and their ambitions for the future. Pupils learnt about their heart, how it works and why it is important to keep their hearts healthy, the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise. Pupils used their acting skills to display the influences that surround them and how our choices affect us and the people around us. Finally pupils prepared a selection of vegetables for a delicious vegetable soup.

KS2 Reading Café Our KS2 Reading Café was a chance for parents/carers to find out about the books that we are sharing with the children in school and some ideas to use when reading books at home. There was also a chance to look at the wide range of fantastic books that the children enjoy reading in school and to take part in art and craft activities. I think the parents that attended would agree that they were able to hear great reading, make fun crafts, eat yummy treats and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.

KS2 RE Enrichment Day Our KS2 children enjoyed taking part in an RE enrichment Day on 9 March.

Two of the sessions were led by a group of ladies from The Discovery Centre at St Edmundsbury Cathedral. They talked to the children about the events of the Easter Story. Other activities the children enjoyed doing included planting a sunflower seed to take home, making Victorian Easter cards and colouring reflective Easter Crosses, to share at the Easter assembly at the end of term.

Tractors in School Jeremy and Simon Squirrell, two brothers who farm locally, brought their brand new Deutz Fahr tractor into school during tractor in school week.

Pupils from Year 4 and Year 5 learned about their tractor and the farm they run. Comparisons were also made between farming today and during Victorian times - a subject that KS2 pupils have been learning about. They also became journalists and wrote their own newspaper reports on what they had learnt.

Exciting news that the talented actor, singer and dancer Layton Williams will be coming to rural Bildeston, Suffolk on Saturday, 23rd July 2016.

Layton, who played the title role in Billy Elliot the Musical in London's West End as well as the character Kylie in the BBC UK series Beautiful People, is probably best known for his role in the hit BBC comedy and major movie Bad Education. Miss Lesley’s School of Performing Arts (MLSPA) will host a number of workshops which Layton, a professional dancer, and all round musical theatre performer will run, primarily to students at MLSPA. Military Cross Comes to Hadleigh As far as is known no Hadleigh men lost their life in May 1916.

The Military Cross (MC) is the third highest gallantry medal awarded to officers.

On 24th May 1916, Company Sergeant Major (Warrant Officer Class 2) Alfred Stannard of the 2nd Suffolks received the Military Cross from King George V at Buckingham Palace. Much earlier, in November 1914, Alfred Stannard had been mentioned for his gallant and distinguished conduct in the dispatches sent by Field Marshall Sir John French, Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force and the award of the MC was announced in the London Gazette on the 16th February 1915. Alfred Stannard was born in Raydon in 1878. He enlisted with the Suffolk Regiment in 1898 and saw service in Malta, India and action in the second South African war before going to France only a few days after the declaration of the war.

By this time Stannard’s family had moved to Long Road, Layham and whilst on leave over Christmas 1915, he married Eleanor Susan Wix in St Mary’s Church. Eleanor was the daughter of the landlord of the Ram Inn, Hadleigh.

Alfred also received some special leave in May 1916 in order to receive his medal. For the British Army the greatest proportion of casualties during the Great War came from the infantry battalions - the men in the trenches destined to ‘go over the top’. It was a lot safer serving with the artillery who were usually a few miles behind the front line. Of the one hundred and twelve Hadleigh men who fell and who are named on the War Memorial, only seven were in the artillery. The British Fourth Army was given the job of planning for the next big push, which was to be in the area of the Somme river during the summer of 1916. A key part of the offensive strategy was to carry out a week long artillery bombardment of the German lines in order to clear away their barbed wire defences, smash their trenches and fortifications and destroy the enemy’s will to fight.

Some Hadleigh men had a long term involvement in the artillery.

Sergeant Major James Victor Herbert who was born in 1880 in Benton Street, enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery in 1898 and took up a trade as a horseshoe smith. He went to France with the BEF in September 1914. In preparation for the Big Push of 1916, his battery was attached to the 6th infantry division which included the 9th Suffolks. For his war time service James Herbert’s decorations included the 1914 Star and the Long Service and Good Conduct medal. He survived the war and died in Hadleigh in 1925.

Sergeant Raymond Groom Rowe was originally from Stratford in Essex and in 1890 at the age of 15 enlisted in the Royal Artillery. He served at home, in India and Gibraltar and was discharged in 1908. He retired on an army pension and moved with his wife and family to Kersey where he became the local postman. In August 1914 at the age of 39 he re-enlisted and served with the heavy guns of the Royal Garrison Artillery on the Western Front until his second discharge in November 1918. During the Great War his family lived at 27 George Street. He also survived the war and died in Eastbourne in 1952.

The 1/1st London RGA and the 1/2nd London RGA who had trained and exercised in Hadleigh over the winter of 1915/16, were in France by May of 1916 and engaged in shelling the enemy’s positions. The men of these batteries had clearly made good friends in Hadleigh and Bombardier Walter Prestige would regularly write back to the town, telling among other things of their progress and their reputation for ‘good shooting’.

On the home front shortages of man power were reaching a worrying level by May 1916, if the reports from the tribunal meetings to decide exemption from military service are a guide. One Hadleigh farmer had sixteen working horses, half of which were standing idle because there was no one to work them. The Government had directed that “the maintenance of the highest possible output of home-grown food supplies remained a national object of the most essential nature” and the military representative on the Hadleigh tribunals had agreed not to oppose too many agricultural claims. Exemptions were given for some work that included blacksmiths, horsemen, stockmen and ploughmen. William Hynard, who, it was claimed was the last slaughterman left in a radius of five miles around the town was given an exemption.

Exemptions however, were conditional and the tribunal could always change their mind as was the case with Frank Grimwood a local coalman, who was granted an exemption only to be called up (Researched by Mark Brennan, Nigel Crisp, Jeff Ward. http://www.hadleighww1.com)

GREAT WAR NEWS MAY 1916

Wed 10 May Writing to Alfred Harriss the headmaster of the Bridge Street School, Private Edward John Austin of the 1/5th Suffolks in Egypt tells, “I am glad to say we are still having a fine time although it is very hot, and sometimes we get it very rough with sandstorms. They are worse than snow storms, but I can stick them better than storms of bullets. The pyramids and sphinx look fine and recall to mind the different things you told us about Egypt at school.

I never thought I should see them”.

Wed 17 May In a letter to his wife the redoubtable Private George Hynard (originally from Angel Street) a sniper in the 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment (then close to Arras, France) relates of his recent experiences at the front saying, “The Huns put 3,020 shells at us in 3 hours and 20 minutes, and we only counted the big ones. We could not count the smaller size because we could not hear them, as there was so much noise from the big ones. I shall never forget it, for it was something terrible, but I am pleased to say we did not have many casualties, and the Germans got a shock when they started to come after us. I suppose they thought they had hit all of us, but there were enough left to get our own back. I thank God I got through that little lot without a scratch and there were plenty of shells bursting within ten and some within five yards of me. After what I have gone through I don’t think the Germans have a bullet made for me”. George had gone to war in August 1914, survived the conflict and died in 1957; he is buried in Hadleigh Cemetery.

Wed 17 May The officers and men of the 58th (London) Divisional Ammunition Column left Hadleigh this week for Melton. It was hoped that they would have continued their training in the locality. In a letter the commanding officer said, “I wish to express to the gentry and residents of Hadleigh and its vicinity, our sincere appreciation of the many courtesies extended towards us by them in various ways. The ladies many and varied, helped in the way of providing the coffee palace, (presumably the Coffee Tavern) games room and various facilities for the comfort and recreation of the NCO’s and men, have proved a great boon to all”.

Wed 24 May Lance Corporal Tim Foster (son of the manager of Hadleigh Gas Works) in the 1/5th Suffolks, who is acting station master near Port Suez, gives the following information, “I generally get a nice fresh dip every evening in the Suez Canal. On Sunday evening a liner passed as we were bathing and some of the passengers threw items of tobacco to us”. (On another occasion]) “I was fishing from the landing stage when the Prince of Wales laned only a few feet from where I was standing. I took no notice of him, nor he of me, for it was not until some hours later I learnt who he was. He went to the desert posts in a motor car. This evening an urgent message came for water to be sent over the desert and so I had to arrange a ‘special’ to run water up. As it was a pleasant evening I went up in the train travelling in a truck on the outward journey and in the cab of the engine coming back”.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club We received a thoroughly entertaining talk on willow weaving from Deb Hart who specialises in working with willow and making everything with it from fences, through to traps and hats, garden ornaments and even ornate butterflies. We learned that some willow can grow as much as 13 foot in a year and has quite an aggressive roots system - I will be checking the twisted willow growing in my small front garden now! During her talk Deb made a garden obelisk which she kindly donated to our evening raffle - everyone was quite envious of Ruth drawing the winning ticket.

Deb has regularly exhibited at Chelsea and Hampton Court and showed great enthusiasm for her trade, giving us several ideas to think about. One I liked was using a low weaved willow fence as a raised bed and then putting an arch from one side to the other to make the whole thing look like a giant basket.

Hadleigh Market - Use it or Lose It Traditionally, Friday is ‘fish’ day. Even if you no longer adhere to this religious custom you could take advantage of the excellent fresh fish available on that day every week at the Hadleigh market. Robert Coots is your fish merchant.

Born in Bedford but raised in Lowestoft, Robert has had ‘fish’ in his family since his Grandad was a skipper with the flourishing Lowestoft fleet. It was working part-time with his brother in law for ‘beer’ money that he first became directly involved in the trade. With the demise of local ship building, where Robert had worked as a qualified welder, he decided to take the plunge and become a fishmonger proper. He now has a presence on Southwold (Mon & Thurs) Wickham (Wed) and Newmarket (Sat) markets.

Some of his stock comes from Lowestoft but the lion’s share comes from Billingsgate three times a week. According to Robert “Purchasing small amounts more often ensures freshness”. Customers have an enormous variety from which to choose including shellfish, fresh and smoked fish. All are attractively displayed on ice in his blue and white mobile fish unit. Robert enjoys meeting his customers many of whom have been coming to his stand for years. As with all marketeers it is the crack of dawn start and the elements which make life less than ideal. For Robert the extreme cold works well for the fish but not for him, while the reverse is true in the summer then lots of extra ice is needed.

Holton St. Mary Open Gardens The Holton St Mary Open Gardens, established 20 years ago in 1996, will take place for the sixth time on Sunday 22nd May 2016. Over 15 gardens in the village will be open to view, some small, some large.

Refreshments will be served at various locations during the day. Parking will be available at locations marked with a P. Entry to gardens is by by catalogue.

Down to Earth ...with Dave Just when you think some better weather is starting, down comes even more rain, still on some of the dry days lately I have managed to catch up on the rotavating and planting out down on the allotment. The first early potatoes are in. I did have to work off a couple of old scaffold boards as the soil was very wet on that day. Various brassicas that have been grown on in the greenhouse have started to be planted out, with many more to follow when they are a bit bigger. As a protection from the cold and pigeons etc each plant is covered with an upturned florists flower pot that has had the bottom cut out. As well as protection it also aids with watering.

The first early peas are nearly ready to move from the cold frame onto the allotment. These too will need protection from pigeons and rabbits, wire netting is my favoured method. I still think that the soil is a bit cold for direct sowing such as carrots, parsnips, spinach and chard etc. Be patient everything will catch up when the weather warms up. If you have over wintered Fuscias that look dead, don’t be in too much of a hurry to discard the plants, they may well surprise you and start shooting in the next week or two, any that have started to shoot should be cut back to a strong bud, watered and fed with a liquid feed.

The sweetcorn seeds sown in modules under heat in the greenhouse have germinated very quickly, within days, once all the young plants are fully showing, then the heat is turned off. I always use a special sowing compost for all of my seeds, fresh every year. If you are growing Tumbling Tom type tomatoes in a hanging basket as I do, place a plastic flower pot tray in the bottom of the basket to act as a water reservoir.

We went to our first garden show of the year held in Trinity Park, Ipswich over the Easter weekend. The weather was cold and wet with not as many stalls as usual, and hardly any people there. We were only glad that we had free tickets as anyone who paid £6 or so to get in must have been a bit disappointed. I am sure that Easter being earlier this year had something to do with it. Am I the only person who thinks that Easter should be on the same date every year?

Just like Christmas. I suppose there is a reason.

In your travels around Hadleigh I hope that you will notice that some of the flower beds are looking better. With the cut backs the council have decided not to maintain the various bit of garden that have in the past looked so good. A group of locals in conjunction with the legacy committee of the Year of the Sheep, have started to clear some of the gardens and plant them up with some 320 plants donated by Babergh. It’s tough going but a start has been made.

Recipe for Success

by Sarah Thompson Simon and I took a few days out to celebrate my mum’s 90th birthday on the first day of Spring. Luckily for me, my lovely country cousin Janet supplied me with a tried and tested recipe and believe me, these are scrummy! Given that it is Shakespeare’s birthday in April, I thought we should pay homage to the Bard and call this one ‘Much Ado About Muffin’…. Enjoy!

Spiced Apple And Sultana Muffins Makes 12 muffins NB: If you don't have cup measures, don't worry; use an ordinary cup or a 1/3 pint mug (NOT a half pint mug) as the straight sides make it easier to calculate ¼ ½ & ¾. Muffins are very tolerant; measures do not have to be exact.

1½ cups plain white flour, 2/3 cup light or dark brown sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt ¾ cup quick cooking rolled oats, 1 teaspoonful, mixed spice 1 cup unsweetened apple puree/stewed apple, 1/3 cup cooking oil 2 eggs, ¾ cup of sultanas, ¼ cup chopped nuts (optional) Brush the muffin tins (or the cases, if using cases) with oil. Silicon cups in the muffin pan are best of all; the muffins never stick and you don’t have to oil the cases Sift the flour with the baking powder and mix the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet ingredients in another.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mix quickly, just enough to moisten all the flour. Do NOT use a food processor or electric mixer (Mixture may seem lumpy, that is OK). Mixture should flop off the spoon like cake mixture; if too stiff, add a little water or milk; Mix in the fruit/nuts.

Divide the mix between the 12 cups/cases and bake at Gas Mark 5 or 180oC for about 25 minutes.

Serve warm; with or without butter– they freeze and reheat well in the microwave.

Hadleigh Community Primary News A Celebration of Schools’ Music 2016 On March 17th, 84 children in the school choir went to perform in A Celebration of Schools’ Music (Our World) at Snape Maltings Concert Hall. During the day they experienced stage calls and rehearsals for the Celebration Finale: ‘Restore Me’, composed by Alex Wilson and Sarah Jewell. In the evening concert the choir performed two thoughtful songs, ‘Streets of London’ and ‘Refuge’. The whole day was a fantastic opportunity and enjoyed by all involved. The choir have since had the pleasure of receiving feedback from the Aldeburgh Education Team… “Wow! Your singing was sensitive and convincing – a really impressive performance.”

Singing will continue to be at the heart of our school.

Sport Relief and Cross Country Success!

This year H.C.P.S. were really excited to raise money for Sport Relief. As this is one of the UK's biggest fundraising events, we thought it would be a great idea to bring the entire school together to get active, raise funds and change lives. This meant on Friday 18th March 2016, H.C.P.S. organised and gave the opportunity to every pupil from Nursery to Year 6 to not only dress up in sports kit and trainers, but also to take part in a 'Fun Mile'. This mile was created around the playgrounds, field and even through the school! Throughout the day, the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves which was great to see.

However, what was even greater to watch was that every child that took part completed the 3 lap mile around the school which was outstanding! With all the hard work and generosity from everyone at HCPS, we managed to raise a grand total of £785.11. Well done and thankyou to everyone that helped made the day a special one to remember!

On Monday 21st March 2016, H.C.P.S. entered 24 Year 5/6 pupils in the annual Cross Country event which took place at Royal Hospital School, Holbrook.

There were 4 races altogether that made up the competition: a Year 5 race each for the boys and girls and a Year 6 race each for the boys and girls. All 4 races were 2,200 metres in distance (approximately 1.3 miles long) and consisted of 250 or more other pupils that were also taking part. All of the runners did exceptionally well with most of them finishing in the top half of their respected races. However, a special mention would like to go to Sara who finished 3rd in the Year 6 girls race and Lily who finished 1st in the Year 5 girls race! Well done everyone!

B/16/00033 – 25 Dunton Grove. Councillor Haylock asked if the information requested on this application had been received.

The Chair advised that confirmation had been received that the garage had been built under Permitted Development and the original garage had been demolished. The Clerk had replied asking if the dining room extension had been built under Permitted Development; would the footings of the garage be strong enough to withstand a second floor extension and why did this extension require planning permission when the other two extensions had not. No reply had been received. On the 7th March the Clerk received documentation from Babergh District Council that the planning application had been approved by Officer Delegated Decision. On the website is clearly stated that Hadleigh Town Council were awaiting clarification on the points raised.

This would be added to the list of issues to be discussed with Christine Thurlow, Babergh District Council Officer.

The Chair advised that she would be raising with the District Councillors attending the Town Council meeting on Thursday 17th March the issue of not calling in planning applications as requested by Hadleigh Town Council.

A new member has joined the Working Party – Jennifer Green who is a Hadleigh resident and works for Suffolk County Council and should be an asset to the Group. The Working Party had discussed the plans for the Annual Town Meeting in April where the Group will encourage people to voice their opinions on any projects they may have for Hadleigh.

STATUTORY CONSULTATION Suffolk County Council had provided details of changes to the waiting restrictions in the High Street which would allow access to the site which is part of the planning application submitted by McCarthy & Stone for the Brett Works Site. Decriminalisation of parking would support these measures. It was agreed that the Clerk e.mail Suffolk County Council advising that this work is necessary for improved visibility but there were concerns as to how the parking restrictions would be policed on the double yellow lines. Could Suffolk County Council take this opportunity to review all parking restrictions in Hadleigh.

ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS Councillor Young asked questions of members on planning rules for art in the countryside. Councillor Monks asked if the McCarthy Stone development would incur CIL payments and would this be received by Hadleigh Town Council. She was advised that CIL payments should be included. Town Council approved the agreement for the pre-consultation process to go ahead but as there were still many questions unanswered reserved its right to make a final decision on allowing the works to go ahead until such time as it has received clarification on these matters. To this end the Clerk was requested to contact Shared Access requesting the Town Council be a consultee on all documentation and that a meeting be arranged to discuss the issues and queries.

MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 18th February 2016 were taken as read, were confirmed and signed.

MATTERS ARISING Councillor Cook asked if the Clerk had heard from Sudbury Town Council on re-forming the car parking group. The Clerk advised that to date no response had been received.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service Councillor Cook advised Council that she and Councillor Wiltshire had written a letter pointing out the concerns raised over the proposed cuts in services. The Clerk was asked to provide all Councillors with a copy.

Layham Road Sports Ground The Clerk advised that the new rules and regulations had been issued to all Councillors and would be discussed under the Sports & Open Spaces item on the agenda.

POLICING The Mayor introduced Inspector Horton who will be in post from the 4th April 2016. Inspector Horton presented the document ‘All Change For Suffolk’ which had been copied to all Councillors and spoke on the changes being implemented from the 4th April 2016.

He answered questions on enhanced on-line services, a more interactive website and lost property issues. There were concerns over the loss of connection with the community due to the changes in policing locally.

Sergeant Milbourne reported that 52 crimes had been reported for the month of February. The main area of concern was the seven High Street business burglaries and he advised how the Police were working on these crimes. He advised that statements do not need to be taken from individuals until such time as there is a suspect and a court hearing in place.

It was reported that there would be no police presence at Town Council meetings in the future but they would liaise with the Clerk on a regular basis and on-line reports would be available to all.

It was requested that the appreciation of the Town Council be minuted for the Police’s attendance and support given over the past years. The Mayor requested that there be a police presence at the Annual Town Meeting on the 19th April 2016.

REPORTS OF THE COUNTY AND DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Suffolk County Councillor Riley had tendered his apologies. District Councillor Dr. Dawson had tendered her apologies. A written report had been received from District Councillor Burgoyne.

Councillor Angland, Chair of Planning, raised the matter of reported planning applications being called in and why this had not happened on two occasions and asked if the system had changed.

District Councillor Burgoyne explained how the two applications had been dealt with and this was felt to be unacceptable by members of the Council.

It was agreed that the Clerk write to the Chief Executive of Babergh District Council stating that the Town Council’s District Councillor on the Planning Committee should be responsible for all planning issues. There should be no ward distinctions on planning issues.

Councillor Cook reiterated her request that the District Council consider decriminalisation of parking and support the Local Government Association in their work on allowing Councils to extend their enforcement powers, which include bus lanes and yellow box junctions, to include weight restrictions.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor advised that Councillor Matthews had a book on the history of the Town’s Twinning Association which he would leave in the office for anyone interested to see.

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £37,739.71 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries.

PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 10th March 2016 were noted.

SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 3rd March 2016 was received and accepted. Following the meeting the new Rules and Regulations for the use and hire of the Layham Road Sports Ground facilities had been produced and provided to Councillors.

These were approved. Voting was unanimous. The new Rules and Regulations would come into effect on the 1st April 2016.

FRANEY, RAND AND PEST HOUSE CHARITIES The Chair thanked Mrs. Legge for taking the time to meet with Councillors prior to the meeting. It was agreed that following the meeting with Mrs Legge she be re-appointed as the Council’s representative on this Charity for a term of four years.

CLEAN FOR THE QUEEN Councillor Young updated Council on this incentive and brought areas of the town to the notice of the Council which she felt required attention. There is a major problem with cigarette butts littering areas of the town. The Royal British Legion had now provided a bin for smokers to use. The Public Realms Department of Babergh District Council had contacted Morrisons who had now provided litter bins and cleaned up the areas around the store. She also reported on the work of a number of volunteers who meet regularly to litter pick areas of the town and other work they were interested in carrying out.

Councillor Haylock advised that Babergh District Council were providing plants for the areas around Magdalen Road Bus Station but now volunteers were required to plant and tidy this area.

Councillor Young would like Hadleigh Town Council to make a pledge to support the Our Tidy Town Initiative and was advised to discuss this further at the Environment & General Purposes Committee.

QUEEN’S 90th BIRTHDAY Councillor Shearly-Sanders put forward a proposal that the proposed Layham Road Pavilion could be named ‘The Elizabeth Pavilion’ to honour the Queen’s 90th Birthday. It was decided that as no agreement has been made about rebuilding the pavilion this would be discussed at a later date.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Councillor Shearly-Sanders put forward a proposal that Hadleigh Town Councillors visit Babergh District Council Offices and discuss with the Officers their proposals for the building and how this would impact the town. This proposal was agreed. Voting was unanimous. The Clerk was asked to contact Babergh District Council and arrange this meeting.

WHITE LINE REQUEST St. Josephs Roman Catholic Church had requested a white line be marked out at the entrance to the Church as there was a problem with parked cars blocking the entrance. It was agreed that Hadleigh Town Council recommend this request to Suffolk County Council.

A BOARDS Following the presentation and discussion that had taken place at the Environment & General Purposes Committee documentation had been received from Suffolk County Council on the scheme for local Councils to manage A Boards within their towns/parishes.

It was agreed that Suffolk County Council be contacted to request if a more gentle approach could be made to businesses in the first instance to bring to their attention that their co-operation is required in order to prevent the removal of A Boards completely from the town. The Clerk was asked to invite the Suffolk County Council Officer to attend the Environment & General Purposes Committee to discuss this approach.

TOWN MATTERS The Clerk reported a request from the First Responder Group for a grant towards new training equipment. It was unanimously agreed that a grant of £1,000 be given to this group.

Councillor Byrne asked how disabled bays were allocated and did they require planning permission as one had appeared at the High Street end in Benton Street and was causing some congestion. She was advised that they did not need planning permission but Hadleigh Town Council was a consultee along with the Police prior to their placement. In this case as it was an existing parking bay there had been no notification received of its change to a disabled bay.

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 30 March 2016 were: • District Council report Babergh had increased council tax for 2016/17 by 3.5%, equating to 9.6p per week / £5 per year for a Band D property. In response to a question about the proposed housing development in East Bergholt, Councillor Ward said although the village was working on a Neighbourhood Plan, this had not yet been formally approved and adopted; it could not, therefore, be considered as material evidence. He confirmed that Neighbourhood Plans would be statutory documents.

• County Council report Councillor Jones had attended the recent Speed Panel Committee meeting, when it had been agreed to extend the 30mph speed limit away from the Marquis, and also the 40mph speed limit between Benton Street and Upper Layham; there would now be a three week consultation period, which was part of the legal process. In response to a question, Councillor Jones said the cost of the contract for an interim satellite broadband scheme to improve Broadband speed had meant it had to be referred to the EU (state aid). In response to a further question concerning Academies, he said Department of Education approval was required if they wished to dispose of any school land, and the proceeds must be used for educational purposes.

• CPR training The open session had been cancelled due to poor response; it was hoped to reschedule this later in the year. However, in the meantime councillors had run an informal session for the Social Club, which had been well received. The owner of the Marquis of Cornwallis had agreed to install a defibrillator on the premises which would be accessible to Layham residents.

• Speed limits The Clerk would make a formal request to SCC for the 30mph speed limit in Stoke Road, Lower Layham, to be extended to the parish boundary.

• Section 106 funding The Playing Field Committee felt that, rather than using the money for something new, it would be better to improve the existing facilities. Football was the most common activity on the playing field and the areas around the goal mouths tended to wear badly. The Playing Field Committee’s proposal that the Section 106 money should be used to lay artificial turf in front of each goal was approved. The remainder of the cost would be met from existing Playing Field funds.

• Ash tree in Mill Lane The Playing Field Committee had obtained four quotes for the removal of the ash tree in Mill Lane; the lowest quote had been accepted and the cost would be met from Playing Field Committee funds; the Parish Council had already agreed to increase its grant to the PFC by £400 and this would help.

• Training Legislation was constantly changing, and new councillors had been elected since the in-house training course in 2011. The Clerk would contact SALC to find out the cost of another in-house training course and would also ask Raydon PC if they would like to participate.

• War Memorial booklet The last booklet had now been sold. It was agreed that the Clerk would ask the printer whether an additional small print run would be feasible.

From Layham Archive ‘Midge’ is living history It was a great pleasure to be introduced to ‘Midge’ Abbott who, now 96, lives in a retirement home in Suffolk.

Midge moved to Layham from Polstead in 1924 at the age of five when her father started a smallholding in the village. The Riddleston-Holmes family were initially accommodated in The Terrace on Stoke Road. Arthur and Mildred had three children – Marjorie (Midge), Geoffrey and Peter.

Midge, who is lively and amusing to talk with, has great stories of growing up in Layham in the 1930s, but it is wartime that is our focus for the moment.

On leaving school, Midge went to work for WH Smith in Ipswich (then accommodated in the Ancient House). Not long after war broke out, rather against the wishes of her parents, she volunteered and joined the RAF as a WAAF (Women’s Auxillary Air Force). If you know the framed collection of pictures in the Queen’s Head, of the men and women from the village who served in the forces, you will find Midge’s portrait in that frame.

After kitting-out and training at RAF Innworth and RAF Morcambe, Midge was posted to the Headquarters No 10 Group RAF at Rudloe Manor in Wiltshire where she became a Clerk Special Duty, or a ‘plotter’. Readers will be familiar with those wartime pictures of young women in the Operations Room placing models of aircraft onto maps as they recorded the reports of the Royal Observer Corps.

The task of a plotter was vital in plotting the positions of aircraft and ships during attacks – and that is the work in which Midge was engaged.

It was whilst she was in the RAF that Midge met her husband Maurice Abbott who flew out of Wattisham as an observer in Bomber Command.

They married, in Layham, after the war and moved to Harrogate. Midge returned to Suffolk to be near her family after Maurice’s death.

Layham Playgroup CIO We have been playing in the garden lots since the weather has warmed up. We have been looking for signs of spring and will start looking at life cycles of the insects that have started to wake up… one of our favourite stories to read is the Hungry Caterpillar. Back to Hockey sessions are coached sessions for men and women who may not have played hockey for a long period of time or who are looking to try the sport for the first time. The coached sessions will provide a great opportunity to learn/refresh skills and play with like- minded people in a friendly and relaxed environment without the pressure to perform.

Last year over 243 clubs delivered sessions and 4,440 players took part.

Based on feedback from players, towards the end of this campaign, we are also encouraging local clubs to come together and play small sided games against each other.

Nedging and Naughton Football Club Nedging and Naughton Football Club won the Lavenham Cup back in 1967 and also the Brent Eleigh Cup in 1969 beating Woolpit 6-0 and then Cockfield 4-0. I am in the process of organising a re-union of the players who played in those games and I wonder if anyone reading these notes wqould know what happened to these Cups and where they would be now.

The Lavenham Cup competitions have not been played for, to my knowledge for many, many, many years, but it would be nice if I could find them and hopefully just borrow them both for this re-union if I could locate them.

Love 2 Sing Choir was established in 2014 to raise money for local Charities and groups through concerts and events and to date we have helped to raise nearly ÂŁ11,000 through our own concerts and appearing at other fundraising events. We have helped to raise money for; Ipswich Hospital Critical Care Unit, The Royal Marsden, The Nepal Appeal, St Elizabeth Hospice, Now 43, St Felix Church, Leiston Film Theatre, The Royal British Legion to name a few.

FUN at FUN Spring Update Stars Alight Theatre Company took centre stage this term at Ananda House, with their performance of The Lonely Wolf.

Performers did themselves proud with their unique take on the Big Bad Wolf and his journey towards real happiness.

Audience members booed, hissed and aahhed as they went on the journey with the wolf, sharing with him both tender and humorous moments along the way. Big congratulations to all the cast for their commitment both to the performance and each other. Not only are individuals developing in performance skills, but also in skills for life such as teamwork, communication and confidence. Such transferable skills are beneficial to all areas of life recreationally, in a work environment and socially.

Stars Alight Theatre Co. Wednesdays 10.30-12.30pm. All Welcome The Art Space continues to grow and in response to an increase in membership an additional session has been added. The new Art Space session will take place on Mondays from 10.30- 12.30pm. This session is designed for individuals wanting to access an art environment who are fairly independent, or who are attending with individual support. Although not a tutor led, there will be a tutor on hand at this time to offer initial support and encouragement and participants will have access to a vast array of art materials.

The Community Craft Club is a vibrant place to be on Thursday mornings.

Crafters are encouraged to try new techniques, experiment with materials and work either independently or on group projects. No previous experience is needed and the session is tutor led.

The Music Zone has enjoyed a term of singing, making music and song writing on Friday afternoons at Ananda House. A new season dawns at the Meadow with high hopes both on and off the field and some new faces in key roles. David Mann has taken over as Chairman from Gary Girling, while Ben Wallis succeeds Josh Davey as club captain.

Russell Wiles has returned to the club as Treasurer, after Tim Ryder stood down after a marathon 25 years in office. The club has created a new position of Head of Cricket, appointing Simon Manthorpe to the role in February.

The 1st XI will be looking for a much better start to their campaign than last season, when they were winless until the end of May. The club has signed batsman James French from Long Melford, and welcome Luke Istead, a 19year-old fast bowler from Auckland in New Zealand. Dominic Manthorpe has agreed to play for Bury in the East Anglian Premier League to further his firstclass ambitions, but will continue to play for Hadleigh’s T20 sides. It is encouraging to see two outstanding players from last season, Kyle Tanner and Ben Parker, have pledged their commitment to the club. “This will be my first full season as captain and I am thoroughly looking forward to it,” Wallis told the Suffolk Free Press. “We had a good run at the end of last year, unfortunately the season ended a bit too soon for us but we want to keep that momentum going from last year.”

The 2nd XI will be captained by Marc Lloyd, meaning that players will have to be on their best behaviour, as for the first time both the club’s premier teams are captained by Hadleigh High School teachers! The club has decided to withdraw its Sunday 1st XI from the Hunts County Bats Suffolk League, but has entered a new competition, the Suffolk T20, playing games on Sundays and midweek evenings. After the success of the inaugural Under-19 T20, in which the Hadleigh Hurricanes finished runners-up, the competition has expanded to 8 group games against Sudbury, Bury, Mildenhall and Woolpit.

Come along to the Meadow on a Friday night in July and you’re fairly sure to stumble on some T20 cricket! These promise to be great nights at the Meadow so join in the fun.

Competition for places will no doubt be tight for our remaining Sunday 40-over team, which is captained once again by Peter Tampion.

Hadleigh Bowling Club The indoor “Short Mat” season came to a close with the final of the internal Stone Street League between the pairings of Peter Miller and Jackie Mitchell v Mick Barrand and Robin Beard. In a match of real quality befitting the final Mick and Robin ran worthy winners in front of an appreciative, if small crowd.

Congratulations to the winners and special thanks to Ron Jenkins for organising the winter long event.

It is now time to turn our attention to the outdoor season which got under way on Saturday 16 April with our opening drive and supper which, as always, proved very popular. This was followed by a practice drive on Tuesday 19 April at which World Bowls Professional Mark Royal brought his road show of Bowls Clothing and Equipment to the club for members to get set up for the forth coming season.

On the social side we have our traditional Coffee Morning scheduled for Saturday 7 May 10.00 to midday at the Stone Street Club which will have its usual array of Stalls including a large selection of plants, books and cakes along with a Tom Bola and more. Entrance is just £1 for a cup of coffee/tea and biscuits and all are welcome. This is followed a week later on Saturday 14 May by a Quiz and Supper Night.

New Members are always welcome, experienced or other wise, at any point during the season, so if you missed our Open Weekend don’t be put off just call in to have a look at the club. There is often someone at the club during the day but we have roll ups on Tuesday afternoons 2.30, Friday nights 18.30 other than in April when it is 18.00 and Sunday Mornings 10.00. when we will definitely be there.

Good Season for Hadleigh Table Tennis Club The Club continues to run two teams in the Ipswich and District League. Home matches are played at Holton St. Mary Village Hall where games have been played by the Club since it was formed in 1979.

The “A” team which has had a long spell in Division 1 had another successful venture during the 2015/16 season just finishing in a comfortable mid-table spot. Evergreen Mike Emmerson once again finished top of the team’s averages winning 45 out of 59 games. He was closely followed by Steve Holland from Colchester who won 23 from 38 games. Both Graham Mortimer and Captain Peter Wright provided good support. New acquisition, Keith Norman only played two matches but won all his games and will hope to play next season.

The “Owls” playing in Division 3 played well just finishing below mid-table.

Newcomer Krystoff Koper played exceptionally well by averaging 69% and having 31 wins from 45 games. Team Secretary Rupert Pyett also scored well winning 52% of his games. The team were also given a good backup by further newcomer Franz Guthrie, Tony Hilton, and Bob Southgate. Overall the team gained good experience which augers well for next season.

WHAGS provide a Fines Fence A group of golfers have come to the rescue of a day club for old people by making their garden secure. The Wednesday Hackers and Golfers Society (WHAGS) perform at Newton Green Golf Club, and founder captain George Bullett extracts fines from members for various misdemeanours.

In the last year he raised £400 and it has gone to renew a fence round the garden of the Chilton Day Club run by Age UK at Sudbury.

Newton Junior Fund Raiser Nets £1,180 A Fund raising day which supports one of Suffolk's most successful golf junior sections has raised £1,180.

The sum was raised at a chairty golf day staged at Newton Green Golf Club, where juniors made a near clean sweep of junior team titles in the county last season. The section is self Winning team, left to right: Bernie Pooley, Mick Springett, Mark Barlow funding, and 18 teams of four and Robbie Rothwell supported the charity event, which started in steady rain which gradually cleared up before a torrential downpour left the approaches to the club almost marooned in flood water.

The next match ended with a splendid three goal win at Clacton before Whitton were beaten by two clear goals at the Millfield, in a match watched by local MP James Cartlidge. He was pleased to see Hadleigh pick up three points with both goals coming in the second half. The Reserves went into the final month on top of the league. A hat-trick by Kyle Gassell earned a three goal win at Wivenhoe. Then Brightlingsea were narrowly beaten at the Millfield before Walsham came to Hadleigh and a draw resulted with two goals apiece. Another level scoreline followed at Saffron Walden as the Reserves continued to play excellent football which delighted their supporters.

An eight goal win followed against Cornard Reserves before a bad tempered match against Stanway resulted in another win at the Millfield. David Lorimer scored five goals in these two latest matches as the Reserves kept up the good form. The Youth Team easily beat Halstead. Supporters are reminded that Chelsea stalwart Ron Harris will be hosting a Celebrity Evening at the Millfield on Friday 13th May. Ticket details are on the club website. Prize winners the latest monthly draw were John Day and Alan Dilloway. Winner of the Ground Improvement draw was Avis Newsprint. Both draws were made by supporter Keith Knight at the Stanway match.

Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies Section The first Tuesday evening after the clocks change for the summer is traditionally the evening 9 hole Ladies’ Captain vs Ladies’ Secretary match. This year was no exception. Two teams were drawn and took on a very windy Gainsborough course to play either on the front or the back 9.

More than 30 ladies took part and to their satisfaction enjoyed a dry round. Afterwards all enjoyed supper in the Garden Room followed by the Lady Captain, Betty Cox, receiving the new presentation of the new shield from Peter Barfield, with Annie Major, shield made by Peter Secretary of the Ladies Section.

Peter had made the old shield 40 years previously which was now full. To everyone’s amusement, he advised those present his skill may not be as good in 40 years time when the next one will be needed. The result of the competition was a well received ‘half’ which will now be shown on the shield for 2016.

Thursday, 31st March saw Stoke’s Mail on Sunday team playing Playgolf, Colchester, on their home course at Lexden. The mid-day start gave good weather until later in the afternoon when a few light hailstorms caused a drop in temperature. Sadly, the Stoke ladies lost the round on this occasion.
