Lord and Lady Hadleigh are off on holiday, but while they are gone the sheriff is in charge and he is raising taxes every day. But hold on there Maid Marion is here with dame Saucy Pots too, can they get the taxes cut and maybe fall in love? Robin and his merry men go to find a way to make some money, a competition they must win to give Hadleigh's fortunes a spin. But the sheriff is a nasty man he wants lots of money, with help from Guards 1 and 2 to raise money for his hobby, the villagers are struggling, the taxes are high but Robin Hood is our guy, with fun and laughter all the way, its panto time for Hadleigh, Hip Hip Hooray.....!

First Hadleigh & district young musician competition “shows the depth and range of local talent” Over forty young musicians from the Hadleigh area ensured that the first-ever Hadleigh & District Young Musician of the Year Competition, which took place on Saturday (November 28th), was a great success.

Sponsored by the Rosa Simon Music Fund, the event, held in the Hadleigh United Reformed Church, saw young people of both primary and high school age groups demonstrating their musical skills and techniques in both singing and a range of instruments including the piano, violin, cello and trumpet.

Organised by local music teachers, Maggie Addison and Elaine Goh, and adjudicated by renowned Sudbury-based opera singer Elaine Henson and organist Roger Green, the Competition was run in a series of heats throughout the afternoon, with those nominated by the adjudicators going through to an evening concert final. After an hour of great music performed in front of an audience of family and friends, the winners were announced.

In the junior section, Thomas Simon, eight, of Hadleigh won for his rendition of ‘Where Is Love?’ from the musical Oliver! Lydia Clifford, 15, of Newton Green scooped the senior prize for a piano arrangement of themes from the film Titanic.

Elaine Goh said: “It was wonderful to see so many young people displaying such skills on a broad range of instruments and singing. It was especially pleasing, therefore, to see that our initial idea for the competition has caught the popular imagination of the town and surrounding villages” Maggie Addison added: “"We are so inspired not only by the sheer talent on display, but also by the immense courage shown in taking part & performing at all. The ages yesterday ranged from 6 years old to 15 years of age. All entrants showed great prowess & tremendous overall potential”.

Paul Simon, from the Rosa Simon Music Fund spoke on behalf of the trustees of the organisation: “We are honoured to be associated with this inaugural competition. It certainly showed the depth and range of local musical talent in our area and it’s about time our young people were given the chance to be able compete in such a way in front of judges and an audience. We hope that it will now become a regular event in the calendar”.

Hadleigh Healing Society A peaceful New Year to everyone. The start of a New Year is the time for taking stock of one's life and perhaps implementing some changes that will makes us feel fulfilled and gives us more time to do enjoyable things. This what we hope.

It does not always go according to plan or work out the way we would like. We find ourselves drifting back into our old ways or that rut, feeling dissatisfied with our lot. Our intentions are good but...... We have all said, tried and fallen by the wayside. With the world in such turmoil, so many displaced persons seeking safety from war torn countries and everyone being entreated to be more environmentally aware the question is posed, what can I do. You feel helpless in such a situation. If we all try to do one small thing it will help. You have at least tried to do something positive. We , the healers, are trying to do our “bit” for the planet and humanity. If you would like to talk about your concerns we are always there to lend a friendly ear, in confidence.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard and his mother Brenda in New York Hello dear Readers and a Happy New Year to you all. For me whilst many things exciting happened in 2015 there were also a number of very difficult times.

I am pleased to say that following her back operation my dachshund Tilly has gone from strength to strength and enjoys playing with her “sisters” Mitzi and and Heidi. Towards the end of November, my mother and I flew to New York to have a couple of days and then to board Queen Mary 2 to sail back to Southampton, a journey that I have enjoyed on many occasions. The picture shows my mother Brenda and I at the top of Number One World Trade Centre. This is a fantastic skyscraper built within the World Trade Centre following the terrible destruction of the “twin towers” in 2001. As I have mentioned before, I had been to Windows on the World at the top of one of the towers before they were lost. The One World Observatory on floors 100/102 of the new building gave fantastic views over New York. At 1776 feet, the Freedom Tower, as it is also known, is the sixth tallest skyscraper in the world. It was a wonderful visit.

Whilst in New York, we made use of Uber which is a car service operated from one’s smart ‘phone. As my chauffeur did not travel with us this was an invaluable arrangement. Just input your destination, where you want to go and the type of car that you require (in our case naturally this was a limo). Within minutes a car arrived. The drivers were polite and the price was reasonable. No wonder that the London black cabs feel under threat from the same service. We once again enjoyed The Rockettes’ Christmas Show at Radio City – it can only be described as fantastic. Sadly before we could join the ship my mother fractured her hip and had to have an operation in New York. The ship sailed without us and we were delayed in New York. We were insured with NFU which sub-contracted its travel insurance to an outfit in France and my dealings with them can best be described as traumatic.

If you are taking travel insurance do check who actually administers any claim.

In October 2015, I celebtrated thirty years of qualification as a Solicitor.

I have been privileged to have dealt with very many interesting matters in that time. Please continue to take the benefit of my experience which is on your doorstep. There are so many factors that clients do not take into account when negotiating a sale and purchase. Do discuss with us your property needs throughout 2016. Rotary Review SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING: this was held at the beginning of December to elect officers for 2016/17 and regretfully there were no nominations for President or President Elect which will create a major problem in July when the new Rotary year begins. With only 9 full members and 5 Associates the struggle to survive appears to be nearing its end unless new blood is found within the next few months. The minimum requirement is a team of 4-5 people keen to help run the Club. Rotary has a proud history going back 110 years whilst in Hadleigh it has existed for 38 years outliving Round Table, The Lions and perhaps the Chamber of Commerce. The Club will celebrate its 38th Charter anniversary in February - WILL IT BE THE LAST - IT IS IN YOUR HANDS. There is no doubt that to survive the Club must change considerably in its format but there are now a number of different options which make it easier to join, less onerous and, perhaps, more entertaining when a member - flexibility is the key word for meetings, attendances etc. Rotary today is more attractive to younger people, more family friendly and it is fun to be involved. CLUB EVENTS: this year the Christmas Party took place at Stoke by Nayland hotel which catered for a group of 14 very well and an enjoyable evening was had by all. Most people stayed overnight and enjoyed breakfasting together as well.

SPEAKER: Fred Breyer spoke to the Club about his new charity 'Surviving WInter in Hadleigh'. Fred believes that he has spotted a gap in the support network for people needing a helping hand. His aim is to provide immediate emergency aid in a dire situation such as: A sudden breakdown in central heating - if there is no money to cover a call out charge the charity will provide.

No money for fuel - it will pay enough to ensure that supply is not disconnected and continues for a short period to allow negotiation with the supplier.

There is an emergency supply of coal available.

The Charity will also supply warm clothing and other warmth aids.

He emphasised that the charity will not give any long term aid but will encourage recipients to seek advice from Citizens Advice, Age UK, Benefits office, Local Council etc. Applicants will be visited and assessed before help is provided and this will be on a one off basis paid direct to supplier, repair company etc. He hopes that local people will help by ,perhaps, donating their winter fuel payment if this is not a necessity. Hadleigh Folk and Acoustic Music Nights We are now in our fifth year of bringing quality acoustic music to Hadleigh and hope to continue for many more, hosting nationally renowned guests and also popular locals. Our music is a mixture of folk, contemporary, jazz and pop anything as long as it is acoustic. Our evenings usually start with a short openmic session. This is followed by a 30-minute support act and the evening ends with a main guest who performs for one hour. Local World War Two hero receives France’s highest honour Harry Hughes, from Hadleigh, was formally presented with the Legion of Honour, France’s highest award by Mrs Diana Hunt the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk at a ceremony organised by the Hadleigh Royal British Legion in the Guildhall, Hadleigh on Sunday 13th December.

Shortly after his 18th birthday, Harry Hughes received his call up papers and reported to the Suffolk Regiment in February 1944. After a few months of hurried training, Harry was shipped out to Normandy to join the 1st Battalion of the Suffolks as a battlefield casualty replacement. Harry went on to fight through France, Belgium and Holland before entering Germany. At the end of the war in Europe, Harry and the Suffolks remained in Germany as the initial army of occupation. However, their time in Germany was cut short and the battalion was shipped out to Palestine. Harry returned home in 1947 and was demobbed in September that year.

Harry is a popular figure in Hadleigh. He keeps himself active by dog walking and tending his very productive garden. He is a regular at The George public house where he will be inundated with congratulations from all his friends.

Thankyou Beryl Allen Beryl Allen had been chairman of the charity Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee for a long time. Now aged 90 she has decided to stand down and hand over the responsibility to Andrew Cummins. In recognition and appreciation of her service to Hadleigh, fellow committee members presented her with a silver bracelet.

For many years the committee has received donations from generous local businesses.

Beryl has worked hard to ensure all this money is all used for the benefit of the Hadleigh elderly. A large proportion is used to fund vouchers for residents aged 70 or over. Every year they continue to be delivered to their homes in time for Christmas. They can be used to purchase goods in Hadleigh’s local stores.

Beryl was born in Hadleigh, in the flat above her parent’s general store and bakery in Threadneedle Street. As a youngster she attended the nearby school. On passing the 11 plus she transferred to Sudbury Girls High School.

Keen on hockey she played for both the school and Hadleigh teams. After leaving school Beryl worked in Lloyds Bank, where she served on the counter.

She left in 1972 when she married Cyril Allen, a local builder. He was the organist at St Mary’s church. Beryl sang in the church choir for 73 years. She became a member of Hadleigh Evening WI in 1965. It was founded for women who went out to work. For a few years Beryl served as treasurer and then president. Now it is time for Beryl to relax. She will remain on the committee as an honorary member, where her contribution will continue to be much appreciated.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Happy new year, Readers! Did you eat too much over Christmas? The beauty of being a simulator (yes, that’s what I am, just like the big one at Wattisham that trains the Apache helicopter pilots) is that I don’t need any food during the school holidays. Unlike my friends in the Shelley herd who need hay, water and checking over right throughout the long winter weeks. A group of dedicated volunteers keeps their show on Camilla earning her keep the road even when the Centre is shut; the ponies are very grateful to it. Since we have been closed to our special riders for the last four weeks there isn’t much to report until all our friends return for yet more physiotherapy and fun back here at the yard. Are you on our waiting list? Margaret tells me it’s a long one, but don’t despair, she is adept at squeezing people in wherever she can.

The reason we have a frog in this month’s blog is that the old subject of FROG RACING has come up again! Last year’s race had to be postponed, so this is your chance to enjoy a very funny evening whilst raising money to keep my greedy friends in the manner to which they have become accustomed. (It costs almost £75,000 per annum!) I’m glad to say you won’t be racing real froggies, thank goodness, but you do get a chance to name the ten frogs in every race. Got some good ideas? I’m planning to call mine ‘Black Beauty ‘of course, so don’t choose that please. The date of the social event of the year is February 27th, tickets cost £12.50, and a call to Di Godfrey on 01473 658 552 will secure your place.

Our own volunteers at the Centre have also been working hard to raise cash.

People had to guess the weight of a gorgeous Christmas cake; there was a lucky dip from the contents of someone’s attic; there was a sale of delicious Christmas puddings. Each ‘day’ has been asked to come up with an idea for making money and there are plenty of inventive schemes afoot. So watch this space. January’s walk will be on Saturday January 9th and will include our annual walker lunch at The Kersey Bell. We will leave from Stonehouse Road at 10am and will head for the Bell via Rands Farm and Hadleigh Heath. We will return to Hadleigh on the Monk’s path in the afternoon. The walk is 6 miles to the Bell and everyone, including well behaved dogs, is welcome. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as, being winter, the ground can be wet and rough in places. The Bell has requested confirmation of numbers and menu selection by 6th January at the latest. It would help us plan if everyone intending to come along would email to let us know by 4th January. Thank You to a Very Generous Hadleigh The Hadleigh & District Branch of the Royal British Legion would like to give out a massive thank you to the very generous people of Hadleigh and the surrounding areas who gave so generously to this years annual Poppy Appeal. Thank you also to the many outlets who very kindly posted a collection point on their premises and to the many volunteers who manned the collection tables in Morrisons and the Co-op.

To date the 2015-2016 annual Poppy Appeal has raised an incredible £10,609.34. This figure is expected to rise through the coming year as the appeal runs through to the end of September 2016. Finally, I would just like to give a very special thank you to 13 year old Jakob Dadson. Jakob, a local Sea Scout volunteered to man a collection point and incredibly Jakob collected £1,270.53 which is a record for a single collector in Hadleigh.

Why choose acupuncture?

Acupuncture is commonly used to manage pain and inflammation. It stimulates nerves found in skin and muscle, and can increase the body's release of natural painkillers. These chemicals assist the body's healing processes and can offer pain relief alongside other more common Physiotherapy treatments.

In the past thirty years, due to huge public interest, considerable scientific research on acupuncture has been carried out. This has led to acupuncture being widely used to reduce pain in a number of musculoskeletal conditions including neck and back pain, tension-type headaches and osteoarthritis.

The acupuncture treatment An initial acupuncture session with Becky involves a full, thorough assessment of your general health, medical history and a physical examination of your condition prior to the treatment. Acupuncture needles will then be inserted just under the skin or deeper into muscle tissue at specific places on the body known as acupuncture points. Once in place, the needles may be left in position for up to 30 minutes.

A typical course of treatment lasts between 4 and 8 sessions, with each session lasting between 20 and 40 minutes.

Welcome to this month’s Police news item Whilst I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year, I must also say that 2016 is one for change as far as Suffolk Police and your local Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Police Stations are concerned.

I expect most of you have heard on the radio, seen on local TV and read in the media, that Suffolk Police are having to restructure and enforce job cuts due to the need to make savings of £20.5 million from its budget by 2020.

What effect does this have on your community?

1. Safer Neighbourhood Teams will reduce from 29 to 18.

2. PCSO’s will be cut from 166 to 98 3. 26 Police Officers will not be replaced when they retire or leave in the next four months.

4. Only 3 main Police Stations will open their doors to the members of the Public: - Ipswich (Museum Street), Lowestoft and Bury.

Community policing is the most crucial link between the Police and the Public.

This loss of ground level community contact is where the Police learn about people we live amongst, and pick up information that can be developed to fight crime and reduce risks to us all in todays changed world. Therefore, the loss of public access to Police Stations and PCSO’s to your community will mean that it will be more challenging to maintain our current links with the public.

In real terms, for us the Safer Neighbourhood Team at Hadleigh/Capel (Babergh East) in the new restructure will consist of:1 x Sgt, 2 x PC’s, 4 x PCSO’s Safer Neighbourhood Team at Sudbury, (Sudbury & Cornard, Babergh West SNT will consist of:1 x Sgt, 3 x PC’s, 5 x PCSO’s Whilst this uncertainty affects us immediately, we will of course keep you updated once decisions / areas / cover and response is finalised.

Playstation Pre-School We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you all the best for 2016. We would like to thank all the children for their support for text Santa, we had a variety of different jumpers worn in the week leading up to the Christmas holidays. All the children (and parents/staff) had lots of fun at the Christmas party, many thanks to the Ansell Centre for providing the venue, Fun Play Ltd for providing the great entertainment and Sweetreatz of Hadleigh for the presents which were given out to the children by Father Christmas. We are continuing with our books theme in the New Year and will be reading Julia Donaldson stories.

We will be holding a Quiz night towards the end of January, date is to be confirmed. If your child is going to Hadleigh Community Primary School Nursery, we do a collect and delivery service, you will receive your 15 hours funded places with the nursery and would have to pay for a place at Playstation lunch club and session.

The Hadleigh & District Royal British Legion has long served the town of Hadleigh. Like other similar clubs all over the country its early membership was made up of veterans of the two world wars.

As years went by and the veterans got fewer, membership was opened to all and now anyone can join the RBL. There is a very active and successful Branch Section that continues the Legion’s charitable work in the community; organising Remembrance Day and the Poppy Appeal and offering welfare support to the local service and exservice community and we have a large ex-service living in the Hadleigh area.

There is also a very active and successful Ladies Section who organise a monthly gathering with a wide variety of events and activities.

The Club itself, is the only social club of its kind in the centre of the town and it provides a wide range of services, activities and entertainment which are available to the entire community, these include: • Function rooms - One large / one small available for private functions, parties, meetings, etc.

• Catering facility - Available to support any planned functions.

• Licensed bar - Fully stocked bar with a wide selection at very competitive prices.

• TV / Sky - Coverage of all major sporting fixtures.

• Snooker - The only facility with two snooker tables. Organised league and competitions.

• Darts - Home to a number of local darts teams and a major venue for the darts premier league.

• Bingo - Weekly bingo with cash prizes.

• Live music - Year long entertainment programme with live music acts, disco and karaoke nights.

The club is run as a members social club with members coming from all walks of our community. Club membership includes an annual subscription to the Royal British Legion which goes towards supporting this much needed and well respected national charity. The club members elect a Club Committee who are responsible for the day to day running of the club. The Royal British Legion has this year changed its membership joining procedures which has proved to be quite challenging and has led to some confusion amongst existing members. Now that this has come to light, we will be engaging with all our current members to offer assistance if it is required. Our old membership secretary Vernon Leathers is now back on the case.

We are also taking this opportunity to review our operating procedures and to reinvigorate our membership in general. Without local support, the club is in real danger of going the same way of a lot of our other great institutions. We know that the people of Hadleigh are proud of their heritage and keen to maintain our community values. We want to return the heyday of the RBL in the town and create a community facility that will continue to serve this town for many years to come.

So with this in mind we are holding an ‘Extraordinary Annual General Meeting’ for Friday 15 January starting at 7:30pm in the club on George Street and we are appealing to anyone in the community who wants to see the local RBL thrive, to come and join us.

3. Update Corn Exchange. The chairman had a response from Suffolk County Council, concerning an easement for the temporary use of the Foyer only, as a Visitor Information Centre. It was agreed that unless sold, at Easter, the request would be reviewed again.

4. Hadleigh Loyalty Cards. The Thrift Shop will now run the Loyalty card scheme, from its new premises on the High Street 5. The return of the hanging baskets discussed again. Approximately 60 baskets owned but funds need to be raised to meet all costs, most significantly the regular watering and maintenance. ACTION: A Sub Group to consideration how the funds are to be raised 6. VISIT HADLEGH website. The Sub Group reported that work had begun to collate profiles of the range of people we want to attract to the website.

Some possible designs have been drafted. Themes of Shop - Eat - Discover are being explored. Loss can be experienced through the death of a loved one or different circumstances such as loss through redundancy, poor health, financial, friends, pets, natural disasters, plus much more. ‘Living with Loss’ is a group which meets on the second Wednesday afternoon of each month, 2.30pm – 4pm. It is a place where everyone has the opportunity to say how they are feeling at this moment in their life. No-one has to say more than they want to, and, of course, each person’s situation is different. However, we hope this will give people the opportunity to be both comforted and encouraged by what others have to say as well as by sharing their own experiences.

The next date is January 13th in ‘The Guildroom’ at The Guildhall (entrance door across the churchyard from St Mary’s) continuing on February 10th, March 9th, April 13th and so on.

We know it can be daunting to walk into something new where you might not know anyone, but if you think a group like this might help you, we would encourage you to try and see what you think – there is no obligation to keep coming but those who have come are finding this one session a month very valuable. We would love to welcome you to give it a try. One lady in particular has already been brave enough to try and found the group ‘much better than I expected, very welcoming and useful’. We are very friendly and talk over a cuppa and cake.

Hadleigh Community Primary News Sporting Success The Sainsbury's School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme which was launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the Mark.

We as a school decided we wanted to apply and achieve the Gold Kitemark Award this year. After filling in the application criteria using last year's success in sport, we are thrilled to say we have been awarded the Gold Kitemark Award. The award was presented to us in our assembly on Monday 23rd November.

Christmas celebrations.

Children from Nursery, Reception and Year 1 all entertained parents with their Christmas songs and plays. Key Stage 2 celebrated with a carol service at St Mary’s Church on Wednesday 16th December. The choir entertained pensioners at the Hadleigh Baptist Church Christmas lunch and also sang to residents at Sydney Brown Court and Magdalen House. Children from Reception sang carols to children across the school in order to collect donations towards blankets for refugees - through their efforts, and with additional government funding to match any donations made, they were able to raise enough money to purchase 100 blankets!

In addition to this, the whole school had a scrumptious Christmas lunch on Thursday 17th December – 483 children and 128 adults were served a full Christmas meal with all the trimmings…..all in the space of 1¾ hours! Many thanks to Mrs Harvey and her team for their incredible effort and skill!

The MUGA is officially opened On Thursday 17th December, the whole school fitted on to our new multi-use games facility to watch the official opening of our MUGA, confidently and clearly introduced by members of our school council.

After some speeches, children from Years 3 – 6 demonstrated how the area could be used in the future by playing short games of handball, football, hockey and basketball. Mr Peters and PE Ted cut the ribbon to symbolise the pitch being opened.

We are so fortunate to have been awarded this facility by Sport England. It will enable children to participate in sport on the school field whatever the weather. In fact, when the playgrounds are too slippery for sport, the MUGA will still be a useable area.

A number of guests were able to attend the opening ceremony including: Gavin Talbot, who had put in the initial application; Mrs Kitchener, who had helped to push the application through; Florence Grist, an ex-pupil, who’s persuasive letter of support written when she was in Year 6 had made a huge difference to the success of the application; Mr Blacoe, the architect; Mr Barber, who sowed grass seed around the MUGA; Mrs King from the HSA; Mr Gowan, a representative from Fawns’ the contractors; Simon King from Sport England and Ali Furlong who has helped us to increase the number of clubs we can run.

Thank you to all of the above plus our numerous other supporters who have worked to ensure the children have an extra sporting resource – they have left a legacy for future children of Hadleigh Community Primary.

Fidelis Activity News Haughley Hoofers: From the street the foot stamping sounded as if Fidelis members were indulging in a group hissy fit. However, those inside the Dining Room knew better. They were well aware that the rhythmical stomping came from the agile Haughley Hoofers demonstrating their dancing skills in wooden clogs. The dancers performed different dances from the industrial North and North West accompanied by several musicians sporting drums, accordion, tambourine and the Northumbrian pipes. It wasn't long before members joined in and attempted one of the more simple sequences. From the hilarious consequences it was just as well a less complicated routine had been selected. The Hoofers stayed on to catch their breath, have a chat and enjoy some warm seasonal refreshments.

Charity Shopping Spree: Owner Julie Girling invited members to an exclusive shopping morning in the delightful surroundings of Hintlesham Barns. After a welcome drink the ladies got down to the serious business of shopping. As Julie had just returned from her own shopping spree in France there were plenty of unusual gifts to tempt the shoppers. Following their weighty decision making in the shop, the coffee and mince pies were very well received. Julie very kindly donated 10% of the morning’s takings to the groups’ chosen charity. With a top up by Julie a cheque for £40 was submitted to The Hadleigh Boxford Health Centre Charitable Trust. Our thanks to Julie for a most enjoyable morning and her generous donation.

Christmas Supper: A large group of members gathered at the Hadleigh Bowling Club for their annual Christmas Supper.

Cheryl Salisbury, of Chaplin Catering, served a delicious two course meal with all the trimmings. Diners were able to choose from a selection of beautifully hand crafted gifts by Lin Slaughter. Rita Johnson and Jan Devey provided some light after dinner entertainment which was followed by several rounds of the coin spinning game ‘Heads or Tails’.

The Ansell Centre currently run two monthly lunch clubs and one of them – meeting on the first Friday of the month – is looking for someone to take on the cooking. “We have a great team of helpers who willingly prepare, serve and clear the meal but no-one confident enough to plan and cook for seventy people ‘ said Karen Harman from the lunch club committee. “Ideally we would like someone with a catering business or catering experience to cook for us and lead on that part of the meal.’

The lunch club is a community project allowing older residents a traditional hot meal and good company every month. Everyone helping is a volunteer.

Michael John Newman BVMS 1940 – 2015 Much loved James Herriot - styled vet passes away peacefully More than 300 people from the local community coming to St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on a very damp November Thursday to pay their final respects which just shows the affection and respect held for this well known Hadleigh figure.

Many will have known Mike/Michael as one of the local vets working from the surgery on the High Street formerly Lemon and Sutherland but now known as Highcliff Veterinary Practice.

Mike announced his arrival in Hadleigh in style, arriving for his job interview back in 1965 in his uncle’s Bentley, a year after qualifying, and was surprised when they employed him! For the majority of his 39 years working as a vet, Mike was mainly a large animal vet turning his hand to more small animals towards the end of his career. He even worked into retirement, still managing to cover small animal surgeries at very short notice. Very well known for his charming and warm nature, Mike always managed to make light of even the most serious situation always maintaining a good sense of humour. He was well known for his forgetfulness and many stories abound of equipment, stethoscopes and various items of clothing and head wear being left on farms, only to resurface at the next visit. One most notable episode involved the loss of his favourite deerstalker hat mislaid on a snowy evening in or around the Marquis of Cornwallis pub in Layham. Mike was returning to Hadleigh on foot, having just been out to a calving and lost the said hat. Fortunately it reappeared on the head of a local farmer several weeks later when he happened to be visiting the surgery. Mike immediately recognised it and reclaimed the hat and it remains with the family today.

Mike had numerous additional commitments within the community both during his working life and well into retirement. He was involved in the RDA in addition to his role in the Hadleigh tennis club - as playing member, treasurer and later serving as chairman. He also became a school governor and was a regular fixture as duty vet for many years at the Hadleigh Show. Even into retirement, the showman in Mike could not resist a regular turn as show judge at the annual Deanery Dog Show.

Perhaps his most lasting legacy will be his involvement in helping to set up the luncheon club and cinema club at the Ansell Hall when East House closed down. He became a trustee and many people will have enjoyed the benefit of this facility.

A progressive illness and an accident earlier this spring robbed Mike and his family of the continued enjoyment of a very active retirement . The numbers in the congregation on the 19th November just shows how much the local community thought of Mike and how much he will be missed.

Five child arrangements myths dispelled The emotionally-charged nature of separation and the subsequent decision over child arrangements can be tough to manage – but it is a situation made worse when parents fall prey to the myths surrounding the subject. Without a clear, accurate understanding of how the process works, navigating through a sensitive period can be even harder. Here are five common myths dispelled.

Myth 1 - The child always stays with his or her mother The facts: Times have changed. These days there is no bias in the court system towards the mother when it comes to deciding where a child should live. The court must adhere to the simple principle of acting in the best interests of the child, looking at a list of factors called the ‘welfare checklist’. Increasingly couples are entering into shared care arrangements where a son or daughter spends equal time with each parent – or a mixture of weekend and weekdays with each. Arrangements can be flexible to meet the child’s needs.

Myth 2 - Parents try to ‘win custody’ The facts: The definition of the word custody is imprisonment – hardly a suitable noun to describe the care of a child. Fortunately, the term is no longer used, replaced instead with ‘child arrangements’. Gone too is ‘access’, along with the notion of ‘winning’ custody. This change in terminology emphasises that parents are encouraged by law to work together to come up with a pattern where a child spends time with both of them.

Myth 3 - If a parent pays child support he or she automatically gets to see their child – if not, they don’t The facts: Child support is dealt with by the Child Maintenance Service, whereas the issue of child arrangements is dealt with by the court. The two are completely separate. The court decides on the child arrangements on the basis only of what is in the best interests of the child, looking at the welfare checklist.

Myth 4 - A parent can only be made to pay child support for their biological child The facts: A fundamental principle in family law is that the needs of the child always come first, which means a parent can indeed be ordered to pay support for a child they have ‘accepted into their family’. However this is a rare occurrence.

Myth 5 - A parent can’t take their child on holiday without a Residence Order The facts: A Court Order is not necessary, if both parents agree. Where there is a court order, a holiday of up to 28 days is possible without court permission or the other parents consent. However, parents should check with an experienced family law solicitor if they are unsure of the situation. Irrespective of whether or not there is a court order, a parent can’t leave the country with a child permanently without permission of the other parent or the court if there is no agreement.

Whatfield Players Our thanks to all the audiences who came along and joined the fun of RUMPELSTILTSKIN. A special feature of this year was a group of young people who joined the adult team. This was appropriate as we staged the show, as we always do, to raise funds for a chosen charity. We are now pleased to be able to say that a donation of £250 will be sent to Suffolk Youth Carers. WomenVCancer Cycle Africa Challenge On October 9th at 8pm, ninety three women of all ages, from all over the UK, boarded a plane for Nairobi for the first leg of an adventure of a lifetime, having raised a total of £330.000 for ‘WomenVCancer’. The 9 hour flight was followed by a day of travelling in buses, crossing the border into Tanzania to Moshi for our first night stop. Arriving late at our hotel, Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge, we then had to shower, eat and have the bike fit, ready for the first day’s cycle ride, before falling into bed exhausted.

Each evening after our meal, we had a briefing from our tour leader, informing us of the challenge for the next day. We soon realised that every day would commence around 4.30am, packing our cases ready for the bus, before breakfast at 5.30am and leaving on our bikes at 6.30 sharp!

Cycle Day 1 commenced with great excitement and was a mixture of off-road and on-road cycling. The off-road sections were difficult as often, they turned to sand so it took serious concentration to stay on the bike! The buses arrived at the lunch stop ahead of us, a large canopy was erected, under which chairs were set up for us to eat our lunch shaded from the blistering mid-day sun. The afternoon brought forth great rewards, as the word ‘giraffe’ echoed along the group and there on our right in the scrub- like landscape were around 14 giraffes who peered curiously at us as we took photos! We reached our destination for the night, Olpopongi, an authentic Maasai village where we received a warm welcome as they sang and danced for us.

A BBQ dinner around the camp fire with singing and dancing by the Maasai villagers, completed the day before we fell into our 2-man tents, once again exhausted!

Cycle Day 2 began with cycling through a volcanic landscape between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Mero, the latter volcano still considered to be active!

Some of us were lucky enough to see giraffe, impala, baboon and monkeys today along the route. At one of our snack stops a sand storm began so we moved on quickly to the smoother road to Arusha where we spent the night in a hotel. Just as well as we were now all the colour of the landscape and in need of a good shower! Arusha is the main town in northern Tanzania which is sprawling, noisy,busy and bustling.

Cycle Day 3 began with a difficult single file police escorted ride out of the town, as we negotiated vehicles haphazardly parked, which often pulled out in front of us! This accomplished, we then enjoyed cycling through endless grasslands and undulating terrain, cutting through the Maasai heartlands where we saw many of the locals herding their cattle to water holes. The lunch stop today was at a Mtimmojo primary school where around 380 Maasai children are educated . We presented the school with sacks of gifts for the children, from tooth brushes to football shirts, books and pens which we brought with us.

This was our longest day’s cycling, almost 70 miles so even the tent at Zion campsite, close to the Tarangire National park provided a much needed rest!

Cycle Day 4 in the foothills of the Kilimanjaro Mountains was a beautiful contrast to the other days. We cycled into the Rift Valley for some fantastic offroad track passing through cotton fields, sugar cane and rice fields. One of our ladies took a tumble from her bike, banged her head and was taken off to hospital. Thankfully, she had no serious injury and bravely got back in the saddle the next day! She was not the first to fall. Three ladies ended up in a ditch one day, when a truck ran them off the road!

Cycle Day 5 was the shortest day in mileage, but do not be fooled. It was all on asphalt roads, but it climbed to 2000m above sea level as it wound its way up to the famous Ngorongoro Crater where we crossed the finish line at the gates of this amazing National Park. The crater park often referred to as ‘The Garden of Eden’ was formed 3million years ago when a large volcano exploded.

During the 5 days, many of us were affected by the heat, diarrhoea and sickness, making the challenge even more difficult, while making us more determined to complete it! Jubilation, cheering, laughter and tears, hugs a plenty, cameras clicking as we struggled up the final hill to the finish line, having cycled a gruelling 420k in 5 days. We received a welcome glass of bubbly along with our ‘Cycle Africa’ medal, in disbelief that it was all over!

A group photo was taken and we learnt the amount of money which we, Group 2 had amassed for the three charities which come under the WvC umbrella: Breast cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.

The whole experience, the camaraderie, the organisation of this wonderful trip to Africa was by far, one of the best times of my life. The fundraising was tough and so was the challenge, but I’m so pleased that I did it. www.justgiving/Gilly-Dutton1 is still open for your donations to the charity.

Hadleigh Street Reach At the end of March, the Porch Project is giving back to the community by doing a street reach into the town. This will involve young people and their team leaders going and doing jobs like gardening, helping with shopping and any other practical jobs that need done for anyone who needs it. We will have skips at various locations for rubbish and we will be helping out with whoever needs a bit of help. Thank You from the Brendan Oakes Trust and the Alison Fracella Research Trust A very big thank you to everyone who supported us in so many ways at our Quiz Night on November 28th helping to make the occasion such a success. The Ansell Centre was once again packed for the event and everyone said that the evening was really enjoyable and great fun.

The The Winning Team ploughman’s supper was a big hit with everyone too! On the night, after expenses, we raised an amazing £1,200 which we have divided between our two charities. Almost every penny raised will go towards the work we are supporting as our charities have minimal administration costs. The Brendan Oakes Trust supports teenagers facing cancer and the Alison Fracella Research Trust is helping to fund research into brain cancer, especially in young people, at the Royal Marsden Hospital. What Does Parental Responsibility Mean?

Parental Responsibility is a term which is used to describe the various rights and duties which a parent has towards their child. Every mother will have parental responsibility for their child, however, not every father automatically receives Parental Responsibility for their child.

Parental Responsibility provides a parent with the right to make decisions about the care and upbringing of their children. As a parent with Parental Responsibility, you will be responsible for making major decisions in your child’s life, such as the choice of their school, decisions regarding their health, their religious upbringing, in addition to many others. In the case where the parents of a child have separated and they both have Parental Responsibility, these decisions need to be discussed and agreed between them, before a final decision is made. It is important to be aware that in such a scenario, the parent who assumes day to day care for the children does not have the right to make these decisions by themselves, without consulting the other parent with Parental Responsibility.

As a father, if you are married or have been married to the mother of your child, you will automatically assume Parental Responsibility for your children.

This position does not change upon the parties separating and divorcing. If a father is not married to the mother of their children, they will only have Parental Responsibility if their child was born after 1st December 2003 and they are named on the child’s birth certificate. If a father has a child born prior to 1st December 2003 and they were not married to the mother, they will not have Parental Responsibility for that child.

If a father does not have Parental Responsibility for their child or children, the major decisions in the child’s life can be made exclusively by the child’s mother.

This can result in the mother making decisions such as where a child should go to school or where they will live, without consulting the father. If the father is aware of such decisions being made without their consultation, they have the option to apply to the Court for the matter to be considered further, prior to the mother finalising the decision without their consent.

A father without Parental Responsibility can obtain Parental Responsibility after their child has been born in two different ways. If the mother of the child is agreeable, the parties can enter into a Parental Responsibility Agreement.

This document is submitted to the Court and the father will automatically assume Parental Responsibility from this date. If the mother is not agreeable to this, the father will need to make an application to the Court for a Parental Responsibility Order. The Court will grant such an Order based on the father’s relationship with the child and upon being satisfied that the father is willing to be committed to the child for their long term future.

Beaumont School Report Duxford Visit Educational visits really do bring the curriculum alive for the children. One of our most popular visit destinations is the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.

Year 6 visited Duxford in November to learn more about World War I. Below is a recount of the visit written by Ashfaq Ahmed.

Our Visit to Duxford On Wednesday 25th November I hurriedly hopped on my bike and Class 5 at IWM Duxford cycled up the hill. I knew that today wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an ordinary day because we were going to the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. Finally I reached school; I parked my bike and sprinted into the classroom. We all excitedly walked to the bus and set off. Once we were there, we were so amazed by how enormous the hangers were. We couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to go inside. Minutes later we entered hanger 8 (Land Warfare). We first saw the British and French soldiers in WWI uniform talking to each other. We had to guess what they were talking about. After that we saw lots of trucks, jeeps, anti-aircrafts, howitzers and loads more exhibits from WWI and II. After hanger 8, we all strolled into hanger 5 (Conservation in Action). We experienced lots of aircrafts being fixed. We saw this unbelievable jeep from Afghanistan that had been blown up three times and had bullet holes on the window.

We all were starving after hanger 5, so we ate lunch. While eating lunch we watched bi-planes take off and land. After lunch we went to hanger 4 (Battle of Britain) which was personally my favourite. Most of the aircraft were amazing and I was surprised by how big they were. Then we went to hanger 3 (Air and Sea) which was interesting and fun, but we only had time for a quick look. We went in a lifeboat which was huge. Eventually we went to hanger 2 (Flying Aircraft) the second to last hanger, which was very fascinating.

Everyone found hanger 2 hilarious, because of a naked lady picture on the side of a famous World War II plane. It was a B-17 Flying Fortress. Finally we went to hanger 1 (Air Space), where we went and walked through the supersonic passenger plane - Concorde. Secondly we walked upstairs to the super science simulators, and learnt about flying. I hope I go there again with the school, or without, I loved it!

Rugby Tournament Our ruby team competed brilliantly in the annual tag-rugby tournament organised

by Hadleigh High School.

They improved enormously as the tournament went on and finished in a respectable 6th place out of the local schools that attended. What was fantastic, was that the team was awarded the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Sportsmanshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; award for their fair play and positive attitudes. Well done!

Christmas Fayre The time leading up to Christmas is a wonderful time of year to be working in a primary school. At Beaumont this is no exception. Festive activities have been in full swing, with Christmas carols being practiced, seasonal activities completed and parties being organised. The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Friends of Beaumontâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, our parent fundraising group, kicked of Christmas Fayre the festivities by organising a Christmas fayre. The festive fayre was really well attended and enjoyed by all.

Advent Workshop The children in Bumble Bee and Dragonfly Class have had a busy time. They took part in an excellent Advent workshop put on by the people at St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church as well as spreading the Christmas spirit by singing to the members of Magdalen House care home in Hadleigh.

Christmas Nativity Taking part in a nativity play at Christmas must be a rite of passage for most children at primary school. Our children in Years 1 and 2 all played their parts beautifully to the various assembled audiences that came to watch them perform.

Erasmus Project The school played host to a number of visiting teachers from various European countries, their visit marking the start of a 2 year long, joint learning project.

As lead school for the European funded Erasmus project we kicked off the project by sharing good examples of work we do with our children at Beaumont. The focus of the project is how we teach foreign languages to the children. Many thanks to the staff and pupils at Hadleigh High School who also hosted our visitors during their stay. The staff and children at Beaumont are looking forward to working with these schools in Holland, Scotland, France, Spain and Finland during the project.

Santa Hat Walk Much fun was had as the children took part in a sponsored Santa hat walk. To help raise funds for the school, the children were given a Santa hat and gained sponsorship to walk around the school. Unfortunately due to the great British weather, the children were unable to walk outside, so an indoor route around the school building was devised. The children walked for a good 30 minutes Print Ad a NEW quarter:Layout 6 and covered considerable distance in1that2/10/15 time. Have you Humans made a New Year's resolution? I got the wrong end of the stick when the girls were talking about improving themselves and thought they wanted new shelves! Anyway, like my friend Lizzie, I’m going to travel more, starting with visiting some of my fellow Community News contributors, if they let me in! There are lots of interesting people Ken and his pal Alfie and places in our area and I hope to meet modelling their new jumpers some of them soon. and blankets.

My canine pals and I were delighted to receive our very own Christmas jumpers and blankets last month, courtesy of Betty’s Copdock and Washbrook Knitting Group. Alfie and I put on our best cute poses for the photos. Needless to say Ollie (the Black) Cat was not impressed! Which reminds me, we still have Max and Millie, a pair of young, unwanted black and white cats that have been with us since they were born.

I’ll tell you about more animals next month but Ollie and I think Mum deserves some “down time” so SESAW will be closed until Saturday 30th January. Not that she will put her feet up while there are dogs to walk and feed, kennels to clean, plus Ollie’s friends in the cattery, all the birds, farm animals - and Ron. “Him indoors” says he needs looking after too! Rehoming of animals already chosen will continue and we will still attend to telephone messages and emergencies.

Good Grief! It’s Griff!

There was huge excitement and fun when Griff Rhys Jones came to Hadleigh to open the new premises of the Hadleigh Thrift Shop and like Father Christmas, he arrived laden with gifts to donate to the shop (someone might find themselves the lucky owner of his natty leather hat, his wicker basket or shoes). Crowds lined the street, even the traffic had to stop, while Griff entertained the gathering with his humorous take on visiting Hadleigh and his encouragement to everyone to support the Hadleigh Thrift Shop. Griff Rhys Jones said: “When we use the Thrift Shop everything stays in Hadleigh or locally – we bring things in, a local person buys it and then the money is donated to a very local organisation.

The best kind of recycling!”

The Hadleigh Thrift Shop had outgrown its old premises in the High Street and moved next door to the former Hicks electrical shop, where shoppers now have the luxury of being able to wander the aisles in comfort and the shop is now able to accept more items, including furniture. There is even the space for sorting upstairs. As the Town Cryer, the Gruffalo and other Hadleigh Panto characters looked on, Hadleigh Mayor, Richard Whiting, started proceedings and talked about how much the shop has done for the town. Babergh District Councillor, Kathryn Grandon then thanked Griff Rhys Jones, for accepting her invitation and Barbara Boyd for all her hard work in running the shop. Griff opened a celebratory bottle of bubbly for Barbara, cut the ribbon and took selfies with the crowd. The ‘audience’ was filled with keen supporters of the Thrift Shop; many of whom are Barbara’s loyal helpers who give their time all through the year and also helped prepare the premises for the opening.

Others are representatives of the large numbers of organisations that have been recipients of donations given by the Thrift Shop.

It was fantastic to see such a huge crowd of Hadleigh people supporting the opening – the High Street had to close as so many people gathered to see the event. Of course, the big draw for everyone was seeing Griff Rhys Jones. He gave a fitting and witty speech which everyone cheered. We were so pleased that he accepted our invitation to cut the ribbon, taking time out from his extremely hectic schedule. Afterwards, he spent time chatting to everyone in the shop, letting them take selfies with him. It was a very successful occasion and the tills were very busy afterwards contributing to Hadleigh good causes.”

Barbara Boyd was delighted with the opening day celebrations and more importantly, the event and new premises has led, so far, to a doubling of daily takings, so more people and organisations can be helped. Barbara says “We were absolutely overwhelmed by the help we received for the move to our new premises, and also on the actual re-opening day. Griff of course was the main attraction, he made everybody laugh, and many thanks go to him for taking time out from his busy schedule. We will be making a donation to one of his favourite charities MacMillan Nurses.” Barbara continues: “The Community Spirit was certainly alive and well on the day, and that is what we are all about, Local Community. Whether you be tall or short, skinny or well-built, rich or poor, old or young, you are always welcome in our shop. Certificates Evening – Important information for those who weren’t able to attend Former Hadleigh High School students now in Year 12, if you were unable to collect your GCSE certificates at the Certificates Evening on the 26th of November, please collect them as soon and possible. The school is only required to keep certificates for 12 months. After this time, students will need to request a “statement of results” from the Exam Board, for which a fee of £40 will be charged.

Young Musician of the Year

Widening horizons

Our school was represented by several young musicians at the ‘Hadleigh Young Musician of the Year’ at the end of November and we are pleased to announce that Lydia Clifford (11T) WON by performing Hungarian Dance on her violin and the theme from Titanic on the piano. She then had the opportunity to do it all again at the school’s Christmas Concert at the URC in Hadleigh on 15th December! Once again, she performed the songs to perfection.

Some students from Hadleigh High School, joined by others from 10 local schools, gathered at Farlingaye on Saturday the 7th of November for a German Conference Day. The day involved talks from Dr Martin Ruehl, from the University of Cambridge; Alex Pickering, who owns a business; and Hannah Mace and Caludia Nehmzow from the University of Essex. The speeches varied on topics from translating in the workplace, to studying a language at university, and how a language can help you in a career. The day also offered workshops for the children about translating animal sounds, and listening to German music. One of the students who participated, Charlie Kebell, said that “it was a worthwhile experience as it highlighted for me what opportunities a language could open up.” This idea was further backed up by Bon Robinson, who stated that it was “a great opportunity to learn about different cultures.”

Christmas Concert On Tuesday 15th December, approximately 70 pupils were involved in putting on our first music concert as a new department. The pupils performed, read, presented and stage managed for a packed United Reformed Church. The programme showcased our newly formed ensembles: Bella Voce (choir), Orchestra, 'Give It A Go' Group & Suit Up (male vocal group) alongside the longerestablished Flute Choir and Soul Band. There were also excellent performances from our GCSE musicians and other pupils from Year 7 through to Year 11. There were also a number of staff performing, both with Bella Voce and in the rock group The Teacherz.

Enrichment – Be A Daredevil

The concert was enjoyed by all, and approximately £400 was raised towards the Music iPad fundraising effort. Here are some quotes from audience members:

We were delighted with the high number of entries this year which made selecting a winner even more of a challenge! Congratulations to Year 7 pupil – Molly Hook – who was the winner with her collage of snowmen.

School Choir On Saturday 12th December, our school choir 'Bella Voce' performed alongside Hadleigh Choral Society in their Christmas Concert at St Mary's Church.

They performed two of their own pieces as well as performing a choir duet with the choral society. The pupils and staff looked smart and sang beautifully, and (as you can see from the picture) enjoyed themselves very much.

Art Trip - Aldeburgh The Art students recently had the opportunity to visit Aldeburgh and Snape Maltings as part of their current art project. Here they were able to take pictures and complete some research for their project. A student stated that the trip was “Inspirational” and a “Thrilling new experience.”

Cross Country The first of two country events was held on Saturday 5th December to select the Suffolk Cross Country Team for the Eastern Counties and All England Championships. The event was held at Alde Valley School in Leiston and our results were as follows: Junior Girls – Caitlin Fosker 19th and Louise Funnell 70th.

Junior Boys – Ewan Baxter 33rd and Robert Wing 50th.

Inter Girls – Catherine Funnell 24th and Anna Norman 40th Inter Boys – Joel Cooper 33rd and Ben Evans 47th.

Big Bang at University of Essex On 15th December, 29 Year 9 students attended the Big Bang event at the University of Essex. After arrival and registration, lanyards distributed and introduction to our Student Ambassador, the day started with a presentation by Simon Watt.

The presentation named, ‘Ugly Animals’ was very interactive with games and lots of good humour. The students absolutely loved the introduction to the world’s ugliest animals and why we should love them!

The second activity, Altitude Training at sea level. Here the students were introduced to how and why athletes train at altitude and how this can be accomplished at sea level with some specialised equipment. The students then took part in an experiment with a university student on a spin bike.

They took measurements of Heart Rate, The Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and Oxygen Saturation Levels. The results were taken over 10 minutes in both situations of normal training and simulated altitude training. The results were obvious on the graph how much more difficult it was to train at altitude so proved why it was beneficial.

After some lunch the students were then investigating, how they could be a survivor on Mars? In this activity the students learnt how much it cost to send 1 kg of equipment into space (£10000!) so learnt the importance of space and weight saving, so the growing of fresh food was the focus of the activity. The use of LED's to give light to plants and the importance of humidity. The students were able to plant some seeds that had been confused with zero gravity and we look forward to seeing results!

The day was finished with a market place activity. Here the students were able to look around at stalls from organisations offering apprenticeships, ideas for future careers and interactive experiments. One group of students managed to solve a Maths problem and another group attempted to round up some GPS cows! The day was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and visiting a university was a great experience.

Frohe Weihnachten!

Year 8 German students enjoyed getting to know more about some of the tastes and sounds of Christmas in Germany this week. Firstly they sang Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht and then O Tannenbaum.

Afterwards they tasted a selection of typical German Christmas biscuits Spekulatius, Lebkuchen und Aprikosenherze. Happily the most commonly used adjective to describe the different tastes was "lecker"! Frau Miller Poetry Corner As part of their English work this half term, some students in Year 8 were asked to write a poem in the form of a sonnet. They had to write their poem using an ABAB rhyme scheme and, if they could, write in iambic pentameter like Shakespeare. We have chosen one impressive response to this task to share with you.

District Councillors’ Surgery

News from St Mary’s Primary School

We wish you a Happy New Year.

You can meet your Babergh District Councillors and discuss your concerns at their first monthly walkin surgery for 2016 on Saturday 9th January from 11am until noon at the Lounge Room in the British Legion Club (opposite the side entrance of Partridges, in George Street).

December is always a very busy month in school! Beech class enjoyed an excellent visit to Colchester Castle to support their learning. They spent time looking at all the exhibits, finding out about the Iron Age and the Romans. The children loved dressing up! Activities included building a Roman round house and a Roman villa, which was lots of fun. As always, the children’s behaviour was super and we are very grateful to all the fantastic parents who helped out on the day. Photos of all the activities are on the website (www.stmaryshad.co.uk).

The school has just achieved the bronze School Games Mark for increased participation and performance in school sport. The award recognises the contributions made by our Sports Captains and Play Leaders in promoting sport and physical activities.

We are now working towartds the silver mark and looking to set up lots of new sports clubs during the spring and summer, such as the cycling club run by staff who have attended the British Cycling training. The children participate in lots of inter-school competitions, such as the recent tag rugby festival at Hadleigh High School, where one of our girls won the award for Best Individual Player.

Christmas festivities at school always include the Christmas dinner. This was a lovely event for everyone. It is a tradition for all the children to make Chrsitmas hats and, once again, we had some wonderful creations, including 3D decorated Christmas trees! Thanks to all the kitchen staff and midday supervisors for making sure the children had a great day.

Another school tradition is the Christmas Fayre, which is organised by the Parent Support Group. Everyone at school is so grateful to the parents who put lots of time and energy into preparing and running such events. Not only do these events help raise money (almost £800!) but they are also important social events for the school community. As always, the Christmas Fayre started with the Key Stage 2 children singing Christmas carols from the stage – they were fantastic! Everyone had fun meeting Santa, buying cakes and presents and playing games on the stalls. There was a great turnout and, once again, we couldn’t do this without the dedication of our parent volunteers.

The children in Year 1 and the Early Years Foundation Stage visited St Mary’s Church for outstanding Advent workshops.

They loved seeing everyone dressed up and really enjoyed the interactive Christmas story. One of the children said it was like going on the Christmas journey! It was also good fun decorating biscuits and Christmas trees. Many thanks to all the people at the church who

hosted our children and helped them to learn about the Christmas story. They had a wonderful time!

The children were fascinated to watch the live launch and find out about Tim Peake visiting the International Space Station. It has inspired research projects and a lovely partnership between Year 1 and Year 5 children who worked together. The Year 5s are looking forward to presenting their research to their younger partners!

Thanks to all the visitors who have helped lead Worship for us this half term, including Cat from CYM, Pastor Greg Frost, Brian Hempstead, Helen Matter (Diocesan Schools Advisor) and Martin, Daniel and Janice from St Mary’s. our theme this half term has been ‘thankfulness’.

Key Stage 1 and the Early Years Foundation Stage pave put on two marvellous Christmas plays for us all to enjoy. In both productions the singing was tremendous – so loud, clear and joyful. The children did a fantastic job of remembering all the songs and their lines. The costumes, props and sets were wonderful as always. Thank you to all the staff members and parents who helped produce such successful performances. Also, we must say a special thanks to the children – watching you made us all feel very proud!

The Christmas disco was a fun way to end the term. Thanks again to all the parents involved in organising and running this event. The children had a great time and showed off their amazing moves!

One of the highlights in December is our annual Carol Service at St Mary’s Church. Thanks to Martin and Daniel for hosting us and giving a talk about the real meaning of Christmas. As usual, the children’s singing was beautiful, reflecting the practice they put in and how much they enjoy singing and performing. The children from Year 5 wrote very thoughtful prayers to share with the congregation. All the readers were very clear and well done to the violinists!

It has been a very busy, hard-working term and we have really enjoyed preparing for Christmas with lots of festive fun over the last few weeks. On the last day of term, we have all dressed in Chrstmassy clothes and everyone is looking forward to the big day! We wish everyone a peaceful, joyful Christmas and look forward to seeing you again in 2016!

Hadleigh Library changing opening hours in 2016 Hadleigh Library will be changing its opening hours in January 2016 after a consultation with customers. The changes will mean the library will be open for an additional 30 minutes per week. This is being achieved through a slight restructuring of staff rotas which means there is no additional cost. The library will be opening earlier on weekdays and closing earlier on Fridays.

The new hours will take effect from Tuesday 19 January 2016 and will be as follows: Mondays - closed (no change) Tuesdays - 9am to 5pm (opening 30 minutes earlier) Wednesdays - 9am to 5pm (opening 30 minutes earlier) Thursdays - 9am to 6pm (opening 30 minutes earlier and closing an hour later) Fridays - 9am to 5pm (opening 30 minutes earlier and closing two and a half hours earlier) Saturdays - 9.30am to 5pm (no change) Sundays - 10am to 4pm (no change).

The changes were prompted by a review of the library’s opening hours which have been in place for over 25 years. The earlier opening times are designed to be more helpful to people and the current late opening on Fridays is one of the library’s quieter periods.

Customers have been consulted on the changes which have recently been approved by the Suffolk Libraries Board and Suffolk County Council. The changes have also been supported by the Friends of Hadleigh Library.

Several other libraries have amended their opening hours over the past year with the aim of ensuring that they best meet the needs of the local community and any changes are always subject to consultation and approval by Suffolk Libraries and Suffolk County Council.

A second Winter and Conscription Arrives As far as is known no Hadleigh men lost their lives in January 1916. The Great War had now come into its second winter – a winter which was marked by an absolute cessation of all serious fighting upon the Western Front. Enormous armies were now facing each other, but the infantry of neither side was seriously engaged. That said, there were the occasional small scale raid and skirmish. The conditions for the troops was not so utterly miserable as during the first season in the trenches and by now the British had ceased to be a mere fighting fringe and there were many Hadleigh men serving on the Western Front.

In Hadleigh itself, January 1916was reckoned to have been the warmest for 70 years and over the month a number of soldiers came home for leave and convalescence. Known to have made an “appearance” were, from 4th Suffolks, Private Ben Whymark, from 9th Suffolks, Private George Rackham and from the Royal Field Artillery Privates Ernest King and Bert Roper. Some who had served with the 5th Suffolks at Suvla Bay in Gallipoli were also in Hadleigh at this time, among them were Privates Fred Brown, Oliver Brown, Gurney Richardson and Sid Double.

Whilst in Gallipoli Sid Double’s mother had died and the photograph of him shows him wearing one black button which was allowed as a sign of mourning for a close relative. As the New Year opened, the anxiety for the wives and families of those Hadleigh men who went missing at Gallipoli the previous August, continued. After repeated requests for information the wife of Thomas Frost of 13 Angel Street received a letter from an officer stating “I very much regret to inform you that your husband was posted as missing after the action which we took part in on August 12th. I do not know what to assume regards the missing on this occasion. ‘A’ Company had one of the worst parts to cross and I fear suffered heavily, and as we have never been

(as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day) Thu 6 Jan The officers of the City of London Royal Garrison Artillery RGA (stationed in Hadleigh and with the men billeted in the Town Hall and other public buildings) gave a ball to the residents of this district at Hadleigh Hall.

Sat 8 Jan During an inspection of the RGA by General Bevan in the High Street one of the wheels of a gun carriage of the 2nd Battery collided with a lamp post near Mr Elliot’s shoe shop (76 High Street), which upon falling to the ground broke into three pieces and shattered the glass of the lamp.

able to go near the locality we passed that night, it has been impossible to get any reliable information. Names of our men held as prisoners in Turkey are still coming through and so one cannot give up all hope.”

The Balkan Campaign centred on Salonica is an often forgotten campaign of the Great War, yet six Divisions of the British Army were at various stage involved; included in the 28th Division were the regulars of the 1st Suffolks who were there from November 1915 until almost the end of the war. Their arrival came too late to avoid Serbia being overrun by a combined attack from Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria in October 1915, but some containment was needed. During January 1916 the 1st Suffolks were digging in around Thessaloniki (Salonika) on the Greek Macedonia border.

Given the churn of men in this Battalion during 1915 it is difficult to establish for certain who from Hadleigh was present when they were moved to the Balkans.

It is known that Private William Levi Chapman was there. He was born in Hadleigh in 1885 and in 1911 was living with his wife and two children at number 1 Calais Street. He survived the war and died in 1962. Confirmation of others who served at Salonika in January 1916 is difficult to establish, so if any readers have any family information that would be of great interest. The Military Service Act of 27th January 1916 brought conscription into effect for the first time in the war. In general terms this meant that every British male subject who was unmarried or widowed without dependents and aged between 18 and 41, as of 2nd March 1916 was deemed to have passed into the army reserve. Exemption was possible if an application was made by an employer to a Local Tribunal set up for the purpose. The Hadleigh Tribunal was set up by the Urban District Council and consisted of prominent and respected towns folk presided over by Sir Joshua Rowley Bart JP of Holbecks. The tribunal included Robert Hyatt Cook JP landowner and business man of Frenchs in Pond Hall Road, Charles James Grimwade, solicitor, of Toppesfield Hall and Lord of the Manors of Hadleigh and Toppesfield, Dr John Muriel surgeon of Church Street, Robert William Kersey saddler of the High Street and William Branch carpenter and superintendent of Hadleigh Cemetery. The Cosford Rural District Council set up a separate tribunal for the surrounding villages. Throughout February applications would be made for exemption. The Military Service Act 1916 also made provisions that allowed the authorities to chance the terms of enlistment of men who had originally joined the territorial forces, by extending their terms of service until the end of the war and to transfer territorial soldiers to the regular army. It seems likely that this may have affected several Hadleigh men.

Wed 12 Jan Another parcel of scarves, etc has been sent to the Bury St Edmund’s Depot of the 5th Suffolks on behalf of the Mother’s Meetings, who not only knitted the articles but also provided wool for them. (Perhaps the items were forwarded to other battalions since the 5th Suffolks were by this time in Egypt.)

Fri 14 Jan A pair horsed waggon belonging to the RGA in charge of two men collided with the Cooperative Stores covered cart in the High Street. It appears that the horses in the soldier’s waggon bolted out of Queen Street, where the waggon stood and ran into the trade cart which stood outside the Coffee Tavern. This was pushed along several yards and eventually over turned in front of the George Hotel, where the contents of the cart consisting of flour, meal, and groceries were scattered about the road. The cart was damaged and the horse injured.

Mon 17 Jan Whilst out exercising an officer’s horse, Pte Harry Moddy of the 2nd battery RGA was thrown off its back and brought in an unconscious condition to the surgery of Messrs Norman, Franey and Everett, (in Pound Lane behind Dr Norman’s house at 89 High Street) where he received attention from Dr Franey and Nurse Mason and was afterwards conveyed to Ipswich Hospital in a Red Cross Motor Ambulance suffering concussion of the brain.

Wed 19 Jan Mr H F Elliot, the honorary secretary of the Coffee Tavern Committee, states that the opening of the large room above the business premises for reading and writing purposes has been most successful and is much appreciated by members of the RGA. Wed 26 Jan Mr and Mrs Henry Cook of 11 The Bessells have received a postcard from their son Arthur, one of the unfortunate members of the 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment who is a prisoner of war at Doebritz in Germany, acknowledging their Christmas parcel and the gift of tobacco sent from the Co-operative Stores for which he returned hearty thanks. (Arthur Cook had been taken prisoner at the very beginning of the war on 26th August 1914 at the Battle of Le Cateau).

Returning again in 2015 to Santa’s Workshop were the amazing Donkies Jasper and Tiger who get incredibly spoilt by all the children, sincere thanks to Cliff and all at Cobwebs of Elmsett.

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts Well by the time you read this we shall have discovered whether or not December 2015 was the warmest on record. In East Anglia the last few weeks seem to have been dominated by cloudy weather with almost 100% humidity. The grass is still growing well, but it never seems dry enough to give it the light trim which it needs. This sort of weather does not inspire one to get out in the garden and get on with the various small maintenance jobs that need to be done. For that I much prefer a sunny frosty day even if it is much colder.

I follow a news group on the internet (uk.rec.gardening) and at the moment there are two very active topics. The first is discussing the various plants which are in flower at the moment when they should not be, and the second is composting. If you have a very small garden the brown bin is the best solution, otherwise you ought to have one or more compost heaps. I believe that the local council still make bins available at a discounted price. The current topic under discussion is the question of composting waste food. Some references tell you that you should not do this. Actually the item that you should not compost is waste meat products, because it is these that may attract vermin to your compost heap. Waste vegetables are perfectly OK. Weather Records In November at Kersey there was 81.7 mm (3.2") of rain which is 160% of the average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of November was 171.5 mm (6.75") which is slightly higher than the average figure. In November the maximum temperature was 16 Cel (61F) which is about 1.5 degrees higher than the average.figure for the month. The minimum temperature was -2 Cel (28F) which is slightly colder than average.

Hints In the hopefully cool weather of January it is a good time to think what you want to grow in 2016. The various company Seed Catalogues are all available and will be full of tempting offers. I grow a lot less flowers from seed than I used to, but still like to grow my own Sweet Peas from seed, and to try one or two new items. Providing you can find the space to grow on more plants than you actually want it is quite worthwhile growing perrenial flowers from seed. There will be variation in the seedlings, and then you can select the best plants to keep and plant out in your border. If the weather is mild get on with the pruning jobs on fruit trees, roses etc.

If snow comes remember to knock it off any evergreen trees before branches get broken. If the top net is still on your fruit cage it should be removed swiftly.

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Our December meeting saw our annual Christmas Quiz take place. There were rounds on anagrams, pictures, feely bags (to guess what’s inside), geography and music, all with a gardening theme. We try to cater for all tastes – the music round had numbers as far back as 1899 up to 1997.To help the evening flow along there was plenty of festive food on offer, all washed down with mulled wine.

For our first meeting of 2016 we are trying out a new idea- a number of our members will be taking to the ‘stage’ for a ten minute slot, talking on a subject of their choice, all garden related. (I have been barred from talking on the ups and (mostly) downs of Southend United FC!) It is sure to be a varied and entertaining evening- why not come along and join us?

It will be held on Monday 11th January 2016 at 7.30pm at the Town Hall. The entrance fee is £1 for members and £3 for non-members. We hope to see you there.

HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 19th November 2015 Present: Councillors: Whiting (Town Mayor), Angland, Byrne, Fraser, Haylock, Matthews, Shearly-Sanders, Wilson, Wiltshire and Young. In attendance: Sergeant Milbourne (Suffolk Constabulary), Councillors Burgoyne and Dawson (Babergh District Council) and one member of the public.

APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors: Haines, Monks, Sheldrick and Free. These apologies were accepted.

DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Councillor Byrne declared a non-pecuniary interest in the Accounts for Payment as Beaumont Primary School were a payee and she is a School Governor.

MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 15th October 2015 were taken as read, and were confirmed and signed.

MATTERS ARISING There were no matters arising.

At this point the meeting was adjourned to allow the member of the public to speak on parking issues.

POLICING Sgt Milbourne presented the Police Report for October. It was noted that 15 crimes had been recorded with 2 detected. The offences comprised as follows: 4 burglaries; 2 minor wound without intent; 2 criminal damage; 1 possession Class ‘B’ drugs; 1 malicious communications; 1 dangerous dog causing injury; 1 cause harassment/alarm/distress; 1 make off without payment; 1 theft and 1 arson.

He answered questions on parking issues and it was hoped that the Babergh District Councillors would take the comments made about decriminalisation of parking in Hadleigh on board and report to their Council.

REPORTS OF THE COUNTY AND DISTRICT COUNCILLORS County Councillor Riley had tendered his apologies but had provided a written report.

Written reports had been received from District Councillors Burgoyne and Dawson. Councillor Burgoyne provided an up-date on a planning issue on Tower Mill Lane. Councillor Dawson answered questions on the Funding Circle but advised that she was unable to answer questions pertaining to Babergh’s offices at Corks Lane, the Brett Works site or Angel Court as at present these were confidential matters.

Thankyou On Saturday 28th November, a team of “hi-vis” volunteers once again appeared in the High Street for the annual job of erecting Christmas trees.

The volunteers are often asked who organises and pays for these trees.

Each year, Hadleigh Town Council contacts every business/householder in the High Street/Market Place during September/October to enquire whether they wish to purchase a tree. Once the cut-off date for applications is reached the required numbers of trees are ordered from the supplier.

On the agreed Saturday, the volunteers meet to trim and shape each tree to fit into the wall brackets, decorate the trees with the Christmas lights and then erect all the trees along the High Street.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS Councillor Whiting thanked the Hadleigh Walkers’ for their sponsored walk in aid of his Mayoral charities which raised in excess of £300.00. The Clerk reported: i) a thank you letter had been received from Hadleigh Cricket Club for their grant. ii) a public consultation to shape the future of Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service.

The consultation closes on Monday 22nd February 2016.

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £16,811.89 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries.

PLANNING COMMITTEEThe Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 15th October 2015 and 12th November 2015 were noted.

SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 5th November 2015 was received and accepted.

Councillor Wiltshire enquired as to the cleaning of the Tennis Courts and was advised that these had been cleaned, moss cleared and cleaned again. It was not felt these should be pressure washed in case of damage to the playing surface.

BUDGET REPORT The Clerk presented the RBS report as at 31 August 2015 and also a spreadsheet report with projections to the end of September 2015 and projections to the financial year end 31 March 2015 both of which would be included in the Minute Book. She reported that although it appeared there would be a £50,000 overspend at year end this was the amount paid for the Hadleigh Skatepark which will be returned to the Town Council via a grant so would ultimately have no effect on the overall budget.

BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS 2016 The Clerk advised that the nomination papers for the nominee made at last year’s meeting had been sent to Babergh District Council. Other nominations were discussed.

TOWN & PARISH LIAISON MEETINGS Councillor Angland provided a verbal report on the meeting she had attended with the Town Clerk on 3rd November 2015 where a presentation was given on strategic housing and housing needs.

COUNCILLOR CO-OPTION The Clerk advised that she had received no official approach. The closing date is the 27th November 2015.

TOWN MATTERS Councillor Wiltshire requested that Hadleigh Town Council support any future campaign to save Cox Park should Babergh District Council propose any building work takes place on this green space. Councillor Dawson advised that as of today’s date there are no proposals to build on the land and no action would be taken before January 2016.

The Clerk reported on a letter received from Suffolk County Council regarding support for the proposed build-out in Benton Street. It was felt that as this proposal was not supported by the residents of Benton Street then the town Council could not support it either.

An e-mail had been received from Babergh regarding use of toilet facilities by market stallholders. It was felt that the facilities in the Guildhall/Town Hall complex could not be made available for public use. The Clerk would respond accordingly.

Councillor Byrne reported that a working party from the Steering Group were working on a website for Hadleigh.

Hadleigh Town Guide Hadleigh Town Council is pleased to announce that it will be working in conjunction with Keith Avis Printers to produce the new version of the Hadleigh Town Guide. For the last two years the guide has been produced by the Local Authority Publishing Company but Hadleigh Town Council made the decision this year that working with local companies to support the local economy is hugely important hence the change.

So in the New Year Keith Avis Printers will begin the task of contacting local organisations and businesses to advertise in the Guide and make it the best yet. Hadleigh Town Council look forward to working with them on this project and hope it will be well supported.

Surviving Winter in Hadleigh We start off with some thank's. Firstly to donors: The Dr.Franey Charity, Mr.L.Davis, V.C.News, Mrs.Hilary Griffin. Fred gave a talk to Hadleigh Rotary Club and we look forward for some useful contacts arising from that.

Also Toby (from The Mens Room), delivered our first contact an estimated six weeks of fuel. We were able to supply two much needed blankets for which the recipient was most grateful.

Out of this came a contact for Age UK Suffolk to follow up. Through the good offices of District Councillor Kathryn Grandon we are shortly to supply fuel to two couples in need. This will be delivered by a community sponsored group.

Our District Council being the contact here. However we do really need both sponsors and offers of supplies, all will be acknowledged herein.

We have previously given the number of deaths in Babergh as a result of winter fuel poverty (30 No.in all). It also has the lowest number of grants given out, eight = £1600, from a total of eleven helped. This is £44 per grant less than in Suffolk as a whole. Grants are given to those of 62 years upwards.(Source EADT). SWH has no age factor up or down. Therefore we need support from all in the area if we are going to reduce these figures. Sudbury Area Cancer Support Group for Adults (18+) with Cancer and their Carers Are you or someone you care for affected by cancer and would like support, friendship & information at this difficult time?

We are a team of cancer survivors, healthcare professionals and volunteers working together to provide a local support group in a relaxing environment where people with similar problems can share experiences, obtain information and take part in social activities. Our group is open to anyone affected by cancer whether undergoing or having completed treatment, and their carers.

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the council meeting of 25 November were: • District Council report With regard to Neighbourhood Plans, Cllr Ward confirmed that community-led plans would carry less weight than a formally adopted and statutory Neighbourhood Plan, but planners would still take them into consideration when determining applications for development. He said there was a desire at Babergh to work more closely with communities.

Councillors were pleased to hear that Babergh had agreed to invest up to £1m in the Funding Circle, a peer-to-peer business lender.

• County Council report Cllr Jones said the draft budget for 2016-17 was due to go to Scrutiny on 26 November - £73m savings would need to be made over the next two years. He drew attention to the consultation on the future of the Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service which would close on 22 February 2016. In response to a question from MW, Cllr Jones said he would find out whether there was an executive summary which would help people understand the issues. In response to a question about funding for schools, Cllr Jones said the situation was likely to improve as a result of the ‘Raising the Bar Challenge Fund’. There had been a good attendance at the recent ‘We are listening’ event held in Morrison’s car park in Hadleigh.

• Appointment of internal auditors It was agreed that SALC should be re-appointed internal auditors for 2015-16.

• Emergency Plan John Curran would revise the communications tree and re-circulate it. He had contacted the gritting volunteers who had confirmed they were happy to continue, and he had re-sent the guidelines from Suffolk CC. He would produce an Emergency Plan summary for the January meeting.

• Defibrillators The application for a defibrillator for Upper Layham had been submitted on 8 October (it was subsequently confirmed that the application had been approved and the equipment cleared for delivery). It was agreed to wait until this had been installed before considering the purchase of additional defibrillators. It was noted that the defibrillator in Lower Layham had been deployed recently when someone was taken ill in the Queen’s Head, although in the end it had not been necessary to use it.

• Planning It was noted that the applications in respect of the Marquis of Cornwallis for various improvements, extensions and alterations (amendments to previous permission) and the application in respect of Cherry Orchard Farm had been approved.

• 30mph signs near the Marquis of Cornwallis The Clerk had received an email saying that a report was being put together for a meeting of the Speed Limit Assessment Panel in February 2016.

• Old Orchard The majority of responses from the residents of Old Orchard had been in favour of the proposal to plant two apple trees, and remove the remnant hedge.

• Nos 1-11 Brett Green Responses from residents had been overwhelmingly against the suggestion that the grassed area should be left to grow naturally for one year, as an experiment. The Clerk would contact residents to explain that their responses to the consultation had been noted and the experiment would not go ahead.

• Leaf clearance It was agreed to ask Babergh if the leaf mush could be removed from the pavement outside 1-8 Mill Lane, and Mill Lane itself be cleaned following the large lorries working in Watermill Close.

• Horse riders The Clerk had been approached by a resident who was concerned about the way some car drivers – and cyclists – did not pay sufficient attention to horse riders; she wondered whether one or two signs might be erected asking drivers to slow down. Cllr Jones said he would look into the possibility.

• Meeting dates The schedule of meeting dates for 2016 was agreed and would be displayed on the noticeboards and the website: Wednesdays 13 Jan; 17 Feb; 30 Mar; 27 Apr (Annual Parish Meeting); 25 May; 29 Jun; 27 Jul; 24 Aug; 28 Sep; 26 Oct; 30 Nov. The meaning of Christingle was explained to the children by our curate Daniel Thompson then the children were given bags which contained the necessary items to make a Christingle at home. Afterwards drinks, mince pies and cake were served.

From Layham Archive A seasonal extract from Lucy Harwood’s Diary A reminder that Lucy Harwood was a painter who lived for many years in Kiln House on Upper Street. Below is an entry from Lucy’s diary for 19 December 1945.

The photograph is not of the actual event – it is reminiscent of the time.

“A Layham little children’s party had been arranged by Doris and myself. I had found to my astonishment that there were 15 infants in just these half dozen cottages all of whom I already knew in varying degree. I did the asking, Doris made exceedingly attractive cakes. Mr Songer came in spite of his sorrows and picked holly from a small polite tree with equal edges finished in a point and so bountifully full of berries. He also picked me a large bunch of mistletoe from the apple tree. He said he had been selling some of theirs for fabulous sums. Doris had purchased a Christmas tree which I proceeded to cover with ‘snow’ – silver paper and with divers shining brightnesses. Also presents for each of the fifteen were attached. We laid the tea out in the dining room and had the tree in the drawing room. They all looked charming especially sitting at tea. I put Jenny at the head of the table and Ronnie my woodman at the foot. Ronnie comes weekly dragging an improvised contraption containing the wood with the most adorable spaniel puppy. The wood arrives to provide me with fuel. Ronnie and Judy appear to warm my spirit.

Some of the guests were not yet two – the majority of four and five – nobody more than twelve. The next move was to go to the drawing room where they were delighted with the Christmas tree. I had asked Mr Girling to take over the old custom of being Father Christmas. He entered into it perfectly and dressed himself getting bits from here and there so as to be quite unrecognisable. The children were sitting round the Christmas tree in semi light. There came the sound of thump-thump-thump in the stillness – thump-thump thump with the stick on the floor. Then there was a loud knocking on the door and Father Christmas asking for entrance. A small boy went to the door and let him in.

Then there were cries of real terror from most of the little children and a rushing to mothers’ skirts as Father Christmas related the stock story in the kindest voice. It did not still his audiences fearful hearts. He started giving them their presents and asked every child to kiss him. It required as much courage in those little boys then to kiss Father Christmas as it has done for their fathers to drop from aeroplanes into the front line in Holland. Most of them did it – just! When all the presents were given and Father Christmas proposed to go up the chimney again, the children tried not very successfully to play games. I think they had scarcely been to a party before because of the war during which they had been born. Mr Girling came back again clothed in his right mind and asked them what they had been doing. They told him of Father Christmas coming and all of them except Jimmy and Ronnie faithfully believed his supernatural character”.

Layham Archive news Members of the Layham Local History Group are delighted to report that St Andrew’s Church PCC has agreed to the village archive collection being stored in a cupboard in the church. This means that members of the group will be able to access the collection on any day as the church is always open to visitors.

The group met in the Village Hall in November to complete the task of

categorising the items in the archive. A start has now been made on creating a detailed catalogue for each category.

Sunday School commemorative medal Liz Read sent in photographs of an interesting small metal item found on their land at Overbury Hall. It is a medal (1880) commemorating the centenary of the founding of the Sunday School movement by Robert Raikes. All children attending Sunday schools that year were given a medal. Sunday Schools pre-dated State schooling in this country by almost 100 years. In the 1830s it is recorded that instruction (albeit mainly religious in content) was being offered to 1.25m children. At that time, many children (particularly in industrial areas) were working six days a week and the only day that schooling could be offered to them was on Sundays. We will never know who dropped the commemorative medal pictured above but it does suggest that there was Sunday schooling in the area in or around 1880.

Layham Ladies Christmas Meal Every year an informal group of ‘Layham Ladies’ who either live in the village, or have some connection with it, meet for a Christmas meal. This year they enjoyed their ‘gettogether’ in the Queen’s Head.

It has been interesting to read in the last few editions of Hadleigh Community News about all the time and effort expended on consideration of the traffic problems in Benton Street. Having moved from Hadleigh to Hitcham a couple of years ago, I use the route less often now, but, when I do, my experience is always the same. At least 75% of the problems are created by bad driving!

To be generous to drivers this might be caused by a lack of thought or even carelessness, but too often, unfortunately, by simple selfishness. The concept of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;right of wayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; seems alien to the vast majority of motorists. How often are you forced to stop and wait when you meet vehicles approaching on your side of the road overtaking parked cars, even when they must have seen you coming from a good distance, being followed by a convoy of others who have taken the opportunity to push in?

The parking restrictions in Benton Street would allow an efficient â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;slalomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; passing system, if only drivers would look ahead, see where their next space is and not proceed until they can reach it. Sadly, their vision is restricted to their own little bubble. I fear, therefore, that whatever the various authorities might do, and how much of our taxes they might waste, it will fail miserably, unless, by some miracle, people's attitudes change.

Dear Sir, May I say how much I agree with the comments made by Mr D.Baker regarding the present state of St Marys Church. My connections with the Church go back to 1948 when I first joined the Church choir under Mr Stephenson.Through all the following years the Church was a large part of my life in many ways.My parents were in Choir also and subsequently my own children followed. They were happy fulfilling times and I am fortunate to have so many memories to look back on. I have been in the Church once since the changes started and cannot in all honesty go back again. I find it very upsetting when I remember all we had and achieved in previous years.I want to keep those memories intact!

My children know that when my time comes my funeral will not be at the Church in which I grew up. I could say more but suffice it to say it is to me a great shame what has happened.

Dear Sir, D. Baker's letter says it all - he or she is obviously not a worshipper at St Mary's Church. Is he or she still living in the past, and doesn't realise that the church, which is owned by the community of Hadleigh, has to move with the times. It is used not only by the young who attend the Porch Project, as there are coffee mornings in the CafĂŠ, the Farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Market, concerts and a recent fashion show.

The letter writer obviously is unaware of the exciting development plans for the church, and it is wishful thinking that pews will ever be reinstated.

Dear Sir, I read with interest the article in HCN regarding Benton Street and the picture showing a permanent chicane as a possible remedy to the traffic problems caused by the residentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; parked vehicles. Perhaps Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m missing something, but do we not already have a chicane in that exact same spot? A chicane currently made from parked cars. Surely the cheapest option is to purchase 40 litres of yellow paint and use it to double yellow the whole street.

Dear Sir, I was very concerned to hear that Hadleigh Police Station will be closed to the public from early next year, and for many of us it will not make an awful lot of difference...at least not straight away. Across Suffolk it will mean job losses, posts will be lost as staff resign or retire and our safer neighbourhood teams and officers will be inaccessible, face to face, to us, the public, without a journey of some miles.

We are fortunate in Suffolk to have true 'community policing'. We are 'protected' rather than 'policed', with our consent, by members of our own communities.

Our local officers care about Hadleigh, because many of them live here.

Closure will not result in more officers on the street, it will result in fewer stations and fewer officers, full stop. And we will start to notice the consequences of that, whether we use Hadleigh Police Station or not. Our officers and police station staff deserve our support now, let's not give up our police station without a fight. The Legacy of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015 What’s Next ?

As the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep celebrations have come to an end many Hadleigh residents have been asking “What’s next?” The Legacy Co-ordinating Committee are now exploring several different ways of creating a lasting memory of this unique community event before moving on to the next ‘theme’ for 2017.

The legacy will take the form of • A Large Sheep Figure:- This will be on the hill near the Hadleigh Show ground. It will serve as a unique and permanent reminder of our ‘woolly’ heritage and the year we celebrated our past.

• A Visitor Information Centre:- This would give visitors an opportunity to make enquiries about the town and take away information. It would be supported by a volunteer training programme and an effective Internet profile of Hadleigh.

• Town Trail:- A new town trail booklet about the Hadleigh Clothiers has been written. This gives details of their lives and where they lived in Hadleigh.

Copies of the booklet are available from Avis Newsagent and The Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street.

• Training Volunteer Guides:- The town trail can be enjoyed accompanied or unaccompanied. A training programme for volunteers will be developed to meet the need for guided tours.

• Exhibitions:- The Medieval Manor and Cloth Trade and Costume exhibitions, which were created for the Grand Finale, will form the basis of permanent and developing exhibitions in the future.

• Dyer’s Garden:- The garden is planned for the corner of the Market Place and will be planted with the plants used for dying cloth. An information board will accompany the plants. Volunteers will be recruited for its upkeep.

And After That?

Preparations are underway to produce a leaflet next year about the artist and plants man Sir Cedric Morris. Sir Cedric ran the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Benton End during the 40’s and 50’s and also developed irises to an award winning standard. The recent revival of the ‘Benton Irises’ at the Chelsea Flower Show will be the catalyst for the 2017 town event with a distinct floral/art flavour. As with the HYOS it will be very much a community event with both serious and light-hearted activities to suit all ages and tastes.

On the few clear pre dawn skies we've had of late, take a look at what comet C / 2013 US10 ( Catalina ) has been up to. In last month's issue, I wrote about the comet that was, at that time, approaching perihelion, or its closest point to the Sun. No one knew just how the comet would perform as it's not passed the Sun before, but the results have been staggeringly beautiful.

Before I explain the principle image a couple of pieces of housekeeping; firstly, you will not see the comet like this without taking photographs with a telescope sadly.

You'll actually see it more like the graphic above in the red circle with a pair of 10x50 binoculars or so.

Secondly and finally, I've included a map so you can follow its progress through our skies. Now for the main image. The image was taken by Gerald Rhemann from Austria on December 11th, and shows the comet in perfect clarity. Note the small dust tail in the 7 o'clock position which is white/ yellow in colour, I say small, but its length is some 800,000 miles in this image. This tail tells us which direction the comet is travelling and is comprised of dust around the size of cigarette smoke particles. The comet was shedding around 5-7 tonnes of this dust per second!

Moving up, we coma (the circular, green/yellow feature). This is the "atmosphere" of the comet that envelopes the nucleus which is hidden from sight. This coma measures some 201,000 miles in diameter in the image, or putting that into perspective, that's virtually the earth-moon distance. You'll also notice a boundary of colouration between yellow (dust) and blue/green (gas).

This gas is diatomic carbon emitting the distinguished colour as it interacts with the Solar wind. The charged particles of the Solar wind electrically charge the atoms of gas causing them to glow.

And finally, we see the ion tail. This tail is around 4,000,000 miles long. Again, it is blue because of the Solar wind, but at the top right you can clearly see 3 "blobs" of material. These are known as DE's or disconnection events, and are the result of changes in the velocity of the Solar wind, which on average, travels at 200 miles per second. At the time of the image a strengthened solar wind collided with the comet that created the beautiful tail features captured.

Hadleigh Bridge Club The Christmas teams event was held on 14 December with 6 teams of 4 taking part. The winners, Viv, Colin, Malcolm and Shirley were easy winners this year.

Awards took place at the Christmas party evening on 21st. The club will start 2015 with a strong membership and new members are always welcome on either Tuesday afternoon or Monday evening. Christmas Stars Entertain and Shine Brightly...

Children from the Boxford branch of Miss Lesley's School of Peforming Arts presented their second showcase entitled "Christmas Stars" on December 13th. An incredibly busy time in the run up to Christmas; the students aged 5 years - 16 years performed for two hours at 1.30pm and then had to do it all again for the next show at 5.30pm!

They performed beautifully and the audience of family and friends were thoroughly entertained and given a real preChristmas treat! Work will begin this month with lots of new routines and hard work towards the next show!

On Saturday new Club Captain Ian Thompson hosted the Beaujolais Brunch the first mixed competition of his year. As usual this popular Texas Scramble format attracted a good field on the Gainsborough Course, despite the wet conditions. No team could match the brilliant scoring of the Head family, with some help from Del Prichard. Mum and Dad, Graham and Bonnie Head with daughter Jo Little and Del finished with a nett score of 55.6, nearly four shots ahead of the team in second place.

There were also two nearest the pin competitions which were won by Sybil Paton on the 3rd and Tim Dickens on the 7th. After the competition the players all enjoyed an excellent brunch before the prizes were presented by the Captain and the Lady Captain Betty Cox. On Sunday, 13th December, it was the weekend ladies’ chance to enjoy their Christmas celebration and golf. Sadly, due to heavy rain overnight which continued most of the day, the ladies contented themselves with 9 holes of greensomes golf instead of the anticipated 18. The Gainsborough course proved to be extremely wet but the 9.30am shotgun start saw ladies well covered in waterproofs and with umbrellas open begin their game.

A Christmas meal followed the round of golf and the day finished with a celebration of two reindeer (Lady Captain and Vice Captain) together with Santa (Bev Thomson) and Bob Cox on guitar encouraging everyone to join in a Christmas song and ending with two Christmas Carols. The winners of the competition were Tracy Dickens and Claire Nixon, second were Bev Thomson and Janet Hodge and third, Lady Captain Betty Cox and Anne Hemmings.

The prizes were presented by the Lady Captain and Club Captain, Ian Thomson.

Newton Green’s Carole List to retire Carole List, the manager at Newton Green Golf Club left her post toward the end of the year, after being with the club for 14 years, the last 11 as manager.

Speaking of her record, chairman Peter Philpott, said: “With such a wealth of experience Carole will be missed, but she has decided the time is right to enjoy pursue her interests. “Her service to Newton has covered many historic moments during a period of great change within the sport and its administration. “She has seen the club celebrate its centenary in 2007, combat some of the most difficult financial times the sport has encountered, cope with ever more complicated administration requirements, and been at the helm as Newton has developed into one of the most successful and progressive clubs in Suffolk.

“Carole’s name will continue to feature in the life of Newton Green, as only last year she presented a trophy in the form of a claret jug for the scratch prize winner in our major golf week competition. “The club’s committee now has to consider the management structure it needs to maintain and develop its progress still further.”

Further defeats followed against Stanway and Walsham before a much better display earned a good win against Mildenhall at the Millfield. The Reserves have had great results in recent weeks with a big win against Newmarket Reserves at the Millfield being a particularly outstanding performance. Youngster Aaron Bull scored twice in another good win at Felixstowe in the last match before Christmas. However, the match against league leaders Witham Reserves ended in a disappointing three goal defeat. The Thurlow Nunn youth team have been playing well with Owen Clemson amongst the goals. A six goal win at Clacton saw six different players on the scoresheet. Unfortunately a Suffolk Cup match at Newmarket ended in a big defeat after a good performance in the first half. Prize winners in the latest monthly draw were Liam Jenninngs and Mark Ward. Winner of the Ground Improvement draw was John Day. Both draws were made by supporter Spike Lorimer at the Mildenhall game.

Hadleigh United Fixtures First team fixtures for January begin with a home match against Norwich United on Saturday 2nd. A trip to Brantham follows for a local derby on Saturday 9th before a home match on Saturday 16th against Gorleston. A long trip to Fakenham takes place on Saturday 23rd while the month ends at Newmarket on Saturday 30th. The Reserves travel to Saffron Walden on Saturday on Saturday 2nd before Lowestoft make the long trip to Hadleigh on Saturday 9th. A trip to Woodbridge follows on Saturday 16th and then Wivenhoe come to the Millfield on Saturday 23rd. The return match at Wivenhoe follows on Saturday 30th. The Thurlow Nunn Youth team travel to Sporting 87 on Thursday 7th. A trip to Sudbury provides a hard task on Thursday 21st before the month ends at Brightlingsea on Thursday 28th.
