The Mayor writes...

As I sit writing about the past month and going through my diary; I realise how fortunate I am to have shared my time with so many different people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

Many of these have been so poignant especially those involving remembrance of those who gave their lives, suffered permanent injuries both physical and mental. Sadly, so many are still baring wounds inside and out. The Remembrance Parade and Service organised by Teresa Elford, ( Mayor’s Secretary and Events Organiser for Sudbury Town Council) and Colin Smith from The British Legion worked so hard to ensure that everything went smoothly, and it did.

With about thirty friends from St Gregory’s Church, we went to the wedding of Rev Tom Mumford and Rev Laura Mumford in the Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds. Rev Tom took us through the difficult months of Covid restrictions with tremendous humour and amazing skill with technology, that helped to keep us all sane. It was a very special moving service, a beautiful couple who are so loved and respected by their congregations, friends and family.

The Rail and Heritage Account Manager for one of the UK’s leading independent lubricants companies, who died last year, is to be remembered for posterity at North Norfolk Railway (NNR) where he volunteered.

A plaque in memory of Keiron Thorogood, who died in his sleep aged 49 at his home in Newton Sudbury, Suffolk last NOW November, has been erected at the railway.

Keiron’s role with Shrewsbury-based Morris Lubricants saw him work closely ALL AGES AND FITNESS LEVELS with heritage and main line railways across the UK. He helped launch the DIET AND WEIGHT LOSS MANAGEMENT company’s Heritage Railway Support Scheme in April last year to support railways during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Equally unparalleled was Keiron’s passion for his job, and his signature + feature was an extraordinary interest in the railways and locomotives to which he was supplying, something the NNR had never seen in such abundance before in a sales representative.

“He was a true enthusiast, and his passion shone through on every visit.

Many people on heritage lines speak of the value of building bridges between different railways, Keiron being one of the few who actually achieved this in practice, a position he was well placed to do travelling the UK with a proactive and likeable nature.

Sudbury Community Christmas Lunch We are very pleased to be able to return to The Masonic Hall this year for our Christmas day Community lunch.

This lunch project was started 18 years ago to support those that would normally be alone on Christmas day, since then due to many reasons it has grown to include couple and families that may be struggling and home deliveries to the housebound.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As ever, it has been a particularly busy time in Westminster. On the one hand, I’ve been getting used to life as a Minister, and on the other, keeping up the pressure on my constituency priorities in South Suffolk. In many ways, the common factor has been the great joy of being out and about again, enjoying the freedom resulting ultimately from our brilliant vaccine program.

In Ministerial terms, as I have responsibility for sentencing policy and criminal law, ‘out and about’ has generally meant visiting Crown and Magistrates’ Courts around the country – including Manchester, Birmingham, Snaresbrook and the Old Bailey. Of course, the backlog of cases is a huge issue but it’s not until you visit Crown Courts in person that you appreciate why social distancing rules have made it so much harder to keep justice moving. To emphasise this point, I also recently visited Loughborough where we have just opened a new ‘super courtroom’ designed to try cases with up to 12 defendants, precisely the type of very serious (and often gang related) case that has been most challenging in the pandemic.

Inevitably the most enjoyable part of properly getting ‘out and about’ again as an MP has been in terms of South Suffolk itself. It has been fantastic to be able to once again fully pack my constituency days with visits to schools, businesses, and local organisations. It was also an honour to lay a wreath at Sudbury’s Remembrance Sunday service, following last year’s suspension of the full-blown ceremony.

As I said, public events such as these are only possible because of the brilliant Covid vaccine rollout here in South Suffolk. As we head into winter, it is imperative that all those who are eligible - i.e. the over-40’s or those who are vulnerable - book in for their booster jab. As soon as 5-months since your second vaccination have elapsed, you will be able to book your booster injection.

I wish all of my constituents a very enjoyable festive period with their friends and families, and I look forward to seeing more of you in 2022!

Sudbury Dramatic Society 2021 Panto Puss In Boots Sudbury Dramatic Society are delighted to announce that this year’s Quay Theatre Christmas pantomime is Puss in Boots written and directed by local author and actor Phil Osborn, on from 26th December to 3rd January with a mix of matinee and evening performances You think you know the story of Puss in Boots, right?

Well Phil’s version may differ a little from the story you know. The residents of Schaumbegraben are not happy! Roger the Ogre is taxing everyone for everything, so the Burgher and his Clerk decide to organise a music festival to cheer everyone up. What could possibly go wrong?

The Miller brothers, Arthur, Dusty and Windy, are each given gifts by their father and one of those gifts turns out to be a Very Unusual One. Cerys, a beautiful young Welsh lass, and her mother, Megan, on a sightseeing holiday in the area, are enjoying the local views and learning about the local customs. Will Arthur meet Cerys, fall in love, make his fortune and live happily ever after with the girl of his dreams? Come along to find out and enjoy all the usual mix of Panto fun along the way!

As in Sudbury Dramatic Society’s last pantomime, Sleeping Beauty in 2019, we are designating one performance as a Relaxed Performance, which proved successful last time, and which will be held on Sunday 2nd January at 11am.

A Relaxed Performance is aimed to be more accessible and non-threating to audience members and reduce stress and anxiety in a more open environment to enable them to enjoy the show. Lighting and sound levels will be adjusted, the house lights will remain, and all those loud bangs, flashes and pyrotechnics will be reduced or removed. A chill out space will also be available if the performance becomes overwhelming for anyone, including those small children who are terrified by the baddie and invariably end up bursting into tears!

It feels like everything is getting more and more expensive and with Christmas coming up, I’m really worried about how I’ll manage. My partner and I would love to treat our kids, but we’re keen to avoid huge debts.

Do you have any advice?

Christmas can be costly for many of us, and we know lots of people are struggling already this year. There can be a lot of pressure to spend more than you can afford, so here are a few key things to remember as we head into 2022.

Be realistic and budget accordingly. Work out how much you can afford to spend – and stick to it. There’s nothing wrong with managing expectations, and suggesting things such as spending limits, secret Santa or maybe even that you don’t need to swap gifts.

Don’t forget the everyday bills. Remember that the rent or mortgage, utility bills,1 food bills and13:41 otherPage existing Project15_Layout 20/02/2020 1 debts still have to be paid – the consequences can be severe if they’re not. Even though it’s Christmas, it’s not worth starting the New Year being behind on your bills.

Tempted by Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL)? While it can be tempting to split payments, make sure you have a plan for how to pay the money back particularly if your circumstances or income were to change. If you’re using BNPL repeatedly or using multiple BNPL options, make sure you know how much you owe in total. Make sure you understand what you’re signing up for, how you’ll make the repayments and what will happen if you can’t pay on time. Buy safe to be safe. Whatever the deal, whatever the temptation, don’t buy from unauthorised traders and don’t borrow from unauthorised lenders.

These could put you at risk of unscrupulous collection methods – including threats and harm, unsafe products and unexpectedly high interest rates.

You may also not be protected by Financial Conduct Authority rules. Shop around. Try as many different places as possible to find the best price. Buy what you want and not what other people say you need. Be wary of extended warranties; the cost of a repair could be less than the cost of the warranty.

A strange sight has appeared in the grounds around St Peter’s in Sudbury: a Rotary sponsored snowman – and friends – in time for the seasonal switchon of the town’s lights on 26 November.

A number of old tyres had been retrieved by the Community Wardens from various areas where they had been dumped, and the idea was to make good use of these before they are A group of snowman friends finally disposed of. Members of the Rotary Club took a pile of old tyres, painted them white and decorated them, complete with Rotary badge, red scarf, hat and shoes, to create a snowman with a difference, as part of the Town Council’s run-up to Christmas.

Rotarians also offered a Father Christmas Grotto in the offices of Holmes and Hills on the night of the lights switch-on, and were out with their collecting buckets for Rotary charities. They will be collecting again closer to Christmas, on Thursday 16 and Saturday 18 December from 9 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. collecting donations for various local charities. As many people these days do not carry cash, Rotary can offer a card payment machine!

Forms have also been sent off to apply for SIDs, one along Gainsborough Street and one on Ballingdon Street.

The lorry route review was discussed at a recent planning & highways meeting, where suggestions for the lorry route were agreed upon, however the community led review doesn’t end until 17/12/21, I suggest any residents to speak to their local councillors about concerns, queries, or suggestions.

After the public consultation about Belle Vue, I had a meeting with Will Burchnall and Lee Carvell from Babergh District Council regarding the new plans and equipment for the park. Belle Vue needs a new look and upgrading but the ideas they were showcasing where underwhelming to say the least. I shared my concerns with them and have sent over ideas for engaging and exciting equipment with costs and funding opportunities to be able fund them.

I had the pleasure of joining the board of trustees for Gainsborough’s House as Suffolk County Councils representative in their meeting. We had a tour of the building which is looking fantastic and will be such an asset to the town, with event space for local artists, schools and more. I very much look forward to the spring of next year when it opens, and Sudbury can reap the benefit of the improvements they have made.

The Phoenix Health & Children’s Centre have started a weekly drop-in for young people, Every Wednesday 1-4pm (Parents / careers welcome too) Each week someone from South Suffolk Early Help Team, Youth Support Services will be there to advise on education, employment and training.

I have successfully passed several individuals onto ‘Youth Suffolk Focus ‘project ran by Suffolk County Council for the training of working with young people and mental health, I have spoken to schools about youth mentoring programmes as these are the first steps to tackling our lack of support for Young People in Sudbury. However, to try and take things that step further I have started an Independent Working Group regarding young people ages 0 – 25, The first meeting was held on the 16th of November if anyone would be interested in attending, please get in touch, the next meeting will be in January.
