Top Award for Sudbury Stalwart

The 2022 High Sheriff’s Awards have been announced and the over-30’s honour goes to Lesley Ford-Platt of Little Cornard. The awards encourage voluntary organisations, charities and community groups across Suffolk to nominate one of their volunteers for services above and beyond the ‘call of duty’. For over 60 years Lesley has been involved in community organisations and activities including being a primary school governor for over 40 years, Sudbury Town Councillor for 12 years (including serving as Mayor,) a Rotarian, chair, trustee and fundraiser for several charities including Sudbury Market Town Partnership, River Stour Trust, All Saints Church Little Cornard and Sudbury Hive who nominated her. Most recently, Lesley raised £300,000 to purchase the redundant United Reformed Church in Sudbury to create the Hive Community Hub, doing this during the Covid pandemic with an absolute determination to gain the funding needed. The Award was presented by the High Sheriff, Edward Creasy and sponsors Suffolk Building Society at a short ceremony at the Hive Community Hub, attended by representatives of the sponsors and from Suffolk Community Foundation who manage the Joy Abbott Fund which generously gave a large amount towards the purchase. Lesley said: “I’ve always been a fund-raiser - since I was 8 years old and a Brownie and to receive this award is very special.”
