Special events at Hadleigh Library Hadleigh Library is hosting a celebration of National Dyslexia Awareness Week from 1st to 7th October 2018. Dyslexia Specialist and organiser, Charmaine McKissock, says that this year’s events will focus on the needs of family members and other helpers, who would like to know more about supporting people with dyslexia. We aim to offer: - A free workshop ‘Helping People with Wobbly Spelling’ with Dyslexia Specialist Charmaine McKissock on Saturday 6th October 11AM -1PM. The workshop will be informal, enjoyable and supportive, so please don’t feel nervous about joining. Serendipity Parties in the Garden

On a balmy September Saturday afternoon, Serendipity, Hadleigh Choral Society’s small choir offshoot, racked up the fun in the Garden at the 8th Bildeston B Natural festival with an eclectic selection of songs old and new.

Led by musical director Nansi Browne, who lives in Bildeston, and with their accompanist Paul Dawson, the 25-strong choir tackled an extravaganza of catchy numbers from popular classics such as Ain’t misbehavin’ and Blue Moon to Adele’s Rolling in the Deep and Skyfall. The audience taking tea and cakes were then treated to some old favourites like Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and Bridge Over Troubled Water before the performance was brought to a close by a rousing medley of ABBA songs.

Choir member, Liz Turnbull, commented that ‘it was exciting to be part of such a great Music Festival, with so many talented musicians right on our doorstep!’

Dedham Footpath Group Enjoy walking, meeting new people? Then come along to walks organised by the Dedham Footpath Group. We walk 4-5 miles on the first Sunday morning of each month from various locations. Our next walk is Sunday 7th October at 10.00am. Some years ago, Doctor Franey founded a cottage hospital in Hadleigh and raised funds by public subscription to help maintain it. When the National Health Service came in, the hospital was closed, but its property and funds remained in private hands and the Charity Commission has used these assets to found a charity named after Doctor Franey. The Trustees of the Charity, who are all local persons, have power to help people in need living in the parishes of Hadleigh, Aldham, Kersey, Layham, Semer, Shelley and Whatfield.

The Charity can also help the infirm, the sick or convalescent and those in need of a rest or change of air to meet the cost of holidays. But in every case the trustees must be able to satisfy themselves that the people whom they benefit are needy as well as deserving. A meeting of the trustees will be held shortly and people wishing to apply for help are asked to write to Mrs M. Jeffery, Clerk to the Trustees at 1 Cottesford Close, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5JA, letters to be received no later than 7th November 2018.

Capel Ladies Club’s 50th Anniversary!

What, I wonder, are the key ingredients of a successful, long-running village social club? Could it be the Members themselves, the Speakers, the organised Outings and planned Activities – or a combination of them all with a good helping of camaraderie thrown in? Whatever the recipe, Capel Ladies seem to have got it right as they are celebrating 50 years since their birth in 1968 as “Young Wives”, prompted by a suggestion from Father Ingham, the Rector at the time, of St Mary’s Church in Capel St Mary. According to the old Diary, fifteen “young wives” attended the first meeting on 24th September, of which five offered to act as a committee under the leadership of Mrs Mavis Wilson.

There was a suggested annual membership fee of five shillings plus a one shilling charge at each meeting for tea and biscuits. The cost of renting the church hall was twelve shillings and sixpence! The group decided to meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7.45pm. Early talks included “Slides from Africa” by Wing Commander Birch, Accident Prevention in the Home, a wig demonstration and a talk from the matron of St Mary’s Hospital, Tattingstone!

To raise funds for the club a coffee morning was organised with a Bring & Buy Stall, which apparently raised the princely sum of £8 after expenses! By the time of the A.G.M. in January there were 21 members, and by January 1970 the numbers had grown to 35! A regular event organised by the club was the annual Children’s Christmas Party, and at one of these 90 children attended!

They were entertained by a magician – Uncle Sam from Ipswich – and of course Father Christmas came too! Each child had to pay 1/6d and also bring a present with them for someone else! Apart from this there were regular cake stalls, fêtes to help at and charities to raise money for. In 1970 some young wives ran a coffee morning and made £17 which they spent on a “wireless” for one of the wards in St Mary’s Hospital Tattingstone.

On another occasion in 1985 the proceeds of a hairdressing evening which 64 members attended were put towards the purchase of a colour TV for Capel Ward in Ipswich Hospital. That particular evening was marked by the fact that it was the very first time the club had met in Capel’s new Library extension to the Village Hall. As the Diary says, it was “a much more cosy place for our meetings”. (And it still is today!)

Just to give you an idea of the variety of current club activities, here is a list of a few present members’ favourites: Boat trip on the Deben, Dog Racing at Romford, Badger-Watching, Garden Visits, Meals out, Coach trip to Sandringham, visits to local Potteries and a Chocolate-making Shop – all enjoyable Outings. Popular Talks remembered included the one on Harrods Department Store by Sue Smart, the visit by Sniffer Dogs, the talk and demonstration of his work by ladies Couturier Brian Piccolo, the talk by Street Pastors, Jenny Gibbs’ Turkish talks about everyday life in Turkey as well as the history of the Ottomans, plus various travel talks both local and international. Social Evenings such as our Barbecues, Summer and Christmas celebrations, and also the Craft Evenings are all fun activities. There’s definitely a good mix of stuff going on – something for everyone!

The club of course has changed its name from “Young Wives” first, to “Capel Wives” to include young and old alike, and then to “Capel Ladies” – which was felt to be a much more inclusive title.

We still have around 50 current members, some of whom joined in the early years as newly-weds who had just moved to the village and were looking to make friends. However, we don’t think of ourselves as a club exclusively for older members these days – after all, we have a range of very interesting talks and speakers, not to mention activities and outings, which would definitely be of interest to all ages!

Young Women Of Capel – Come And Join Us! We are holding our own special celebration dinner (with outside caterers) on Thursday 4th October at our usual meeting time of 7.45pm, almost exactly on the 50th anniversary of the Club’s first meeting! I’m sure we’ll all raise a glass of something sparkly and propose a toast to the NEXT 50 years!

Lavenham Tourism It is now time to say goodbye and a big â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;thank youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to Veronica and her team as they prepare to hand over the task of taking tourism for Lavenham into a new phase. Veronica has been part of the visitor information scene since 1991 when it was sited in the Ranson rooms. The office was moved to the present site in Lady Street and she took over as Manager in 1994.

Joined by Graham, Vanessa, and Lisa, and with help from Shirley, they have collectively provided our visitors with an enormous and diverse amount of information and assistance to enhance their experience of not only Lavenham but the surrounding area of Suffolk, and often into Essex and Norfolk as well.

This is going to be a big gap to fill, but plans are moving along with regard to the redevelopment of 2 Lady Street. The winter programme of Wednesday walks at 2pm from The Swan Hotel foyer, starts with the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;New Residentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; walk on Wednesday November 14th. Suffolk Bereavement Support The Meaning Of Feelings Understanding feelings and why we feel the way that we do is fundamental to anyone who is bereaved. Feelings are part of us and tell us what is happening to us. If we try to ignore them it will stop us knowing fully who we are and what it important to us. Commonly, we have learnt from childhood onwards to keep a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;stiff upper lipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and this can lead us to blocking feelings that we really need to express. Sadness, is a really helpful emotion and can help to remind us what matters to us and what gives our life meaning. If we allow ourselves to express our sadness it can also help us to adjust. In contrast, cutting off feelings can be a threat to both our physical and mental wellbeing.

You have never heard any thing less like a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heavenly hostâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; than Hadleigh Choral Society on itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first night back rehearsing after the summer break! But that is what we are supposed to be representing in our latest choral offering, Haydnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s The Creation. Haydn bases this joyful oratorio on the story of the creation of the world as told in the book of Genesis and Miltonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Paradise Lost.

The story is told by the three soloists, who are the archangels Raphael, Uriel, and Gabriel, whilst the choir takes the role of the heavenly host praising God and the wonderful, newly-created world. We are singing the work in English rather than the more usual German, which means that we can fully understand the complexities of the text which describes all the details of creation from â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Let there be Lightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, to fields and flowers, fishes and fowls, all living creatures, and finally Adam and Eve. We have three highly talented young soloists and The Colchester Symphony Orchestra booked for 7.30pm on Saturday, 24th November in St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church, Hadleigh. With uplifting choruses and beautiful melodic arias for the soloists this oratorio is a delight to listen to, and Hadleigh Choral intends to give a sparkling, joyous and heavenly performance of this wonderful work! We Wish You A Merry October It hardly seems possible that this will be the fourth event in December, since we started The Christmas Present Trust in 2015. The trust aims to provide a traditional meal and entertainment on Christmas Day for people in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, would be without family and friends at this time.

The event can only happen with the generous support from businesses and individuals in the locality, together with the immense kindness and support we receive from our volunteers. Our Bank Holiday Sale raised over ÂŁ400 and we have been promised a donation by The Co-op. Donations from any source are always welcome, whether in the form of money or goods and services.

Financial donations can be made directly to the lovely team at Ipswich Building Society as they hold the trust funds.

We will be contacting all those who have volunteered with us before. While it would be lovely to see you again, please do not feel any obligation to join us just because you have volunteered in the past. This article is aimed at raising additional awareness and perhaps for the recruitment of people new to this event. The Christmas Present Trust values all its volunteers and its sponsors, but we do realise that our volunteers have family and friends as well, and that there are other worthy causes within the community.

On Wednesday October 17th we will be holding a meeting for all interested parties, existing volunteers as well as new potentials, at The Ansell Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh, starting at 7.30pm Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

Lasting Powers of Attorney Longer lives and increased property values have caused a noticeable change in the will writer’s work. Lasting Powers of Attorney had only recently been introduced when I started The Will Business nine years ago, but they are now 50% of our work, with many clients who made wills with us coming back for lasting powers.

Lasting Powers of Attorney, generally known as LPAs, were introduced by the Mental Capacity Act to help the increasing number of people who suffer from conditions affecting mental capacity. The registration of LPAs is managed by the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) which has announced that it is handling record numbers of LPAs, with registration requests currently averaging 54,000 per month. LPAs are hugely beneficial because they enable you to appoint your own team to look after you and your affairs when you get too old or frail to do that. LPAs remain just as effective many years after they are made. There are two types of LPA, one dealing with property and financial affairs and the other with health and welfare. The first is by far the more popular although some clients make one of each type. In both cases the cast of personnel is similar, and their commitments in the LPA are designed to satisfy the OPG that the person giving the power (called the donor) is of sound mind and not being coerced into making the LPA. The cast list starts with the donor, who must have mental capacity when the LPA is made. Next, there will be the attorneys (better to have more than one in case one dies early). You can nominate as an additional attorney a replacement in case the initial attorney dies or is unable to continue.

Your attorneys will almost invariably be family members and I usually advise that at least one should be selected from the next generation (it can be disastrous if a sole attorney dies or goes senile while the donor is still alive and needs help). I prefer to see that at least one of the attorneys is based locally and that the attorneys’ appointment is on a ‘joint and several’ basis so that one can take decisions in the absence of the other.

The final member of the cast (apart from witnesses, whom I recommend should be ‘non-family’) is the ‘certificate provider’. The certificate provider – usually myself or the donor’s GP - must confirm that the donor understands the LPA, has not been put under pressure to make it and that the LPA has not been completed fraudulently.

When a client asks us to prepare an LPA the basic information which we need includes the full names of each donor and attorneys, everyone’s addresses and their dates of birth. Any special requirements, such as limitations of the attorneys’ powers, will be discussed at our meeting with the donors.

Once the LPA has been completed and signed (in strict sequential order) we send the document for approval and registration by the OPG’s office in Birmingham. They are currently taking 4-5 weeks to process applications (only then does the LPA become effective).

As regards cost, we currently charge £250 per application and the OPG’s fee is £82. There is no VAT on either of these fees.

Planets The brightest planet on view this month is Mars, shinning in the southern sky at magnitude -1.2 in the constellation of Capricornus. The Moon is close-by on the nights of the 17th/18th of October.

Opposition of Uranus.

On the 23rd of October the 7th planet from the Sun, the ice giant Uranus, reaches 180 degrees separation from the Sun, or in layman's terms opposition; that is to say that the planet is directly opposite the Sun in the sky.

Uranus can just be seen with the naked eye at magnitude +6 and this year the Moon will lie just south of the distant planet. A good pair of binoculars will help to see the planet easily , which will appear as a small bluish/green sphere. It won't "twinkle" as the other stars because it is shining via direct sunlight which will help those new to observing the outer planets.

Uranus was discovered by William Herschel on March 13th, 1781 and takes 84 years to complete one orbit of the Sun at an average distance of 19 astronomical units or 1,767,000,000 miles. The planet also holds the distinction of orbiting the Sun on its side which indicates that a very violent incident happened early on in the solar systems life that literally knocked the planet sideways. All-in-all, it is a nice target that offers little in the way of meaningful observation with basic equipment, but it is very satisfying to see and cross off your list of solar system objects to see.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk In September I was honoured to be appointed to a new role, as PPS to the Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt.

A PPS (Parliamentary Private Secretary) is the link between the Secretary of State and MPs from all parties. It is a particular privilege to be part of the Foreign Office team given the department’s role of advancing our national interest around the world.

On the majority of foreign policy issues there tends to be a consensus, with little dispute on the way our relations should proceed in most countries, and MPs tend to unite when confronted with terrible humanitarian crises overseas, such as in Syria or Rakhine state, Burma. But of course, there are many more controversial issues: notably Brexit, but also the long-running Palestinian question, and how we respond to President Trump and Russian aggression.

Keeping Ministers aware of the direction that opinion is forming on the full gamut of issues is a key responsibility of a PPS. For example, at the time of writing we have encouraging signs in Syria with Turkey and Russia seemingly agreeing a ‘buffer zone’ to protect the remaining rebel enclave of Idlib. Were this agreement to break down, the international temperature would rise – and so would concern in the House. This would be particularly so if chemical weapons were deployed again. Let us hope such further horror can be avoided.

Whilst all of the issues facing the Foreign and Commonwealth Office ultimately affect the people of South Suffolk, I am confident that my new role will not in any way diminish my ability to campaign on the home front. A particular priority at present is the rural economy, given that the Agriculture Bill comes before the House in October, promising a new era for how we subsidise and support our farmers. My stance has always been that we should maintain an equivalent version of the current system until a better one is in place. Quite simply, whether at home or abroad, food production or foreign affairs, we need to apply good old fashioned common sense and resist the temptation of divisive ideology.

The majority of our patients come to us because we have been recommended by a friend or relative, or because their GP has suggested they try osteopathy. For these patients, there is often a little bit of uncertainty about what they can expect, so here are some of the most frequently asked questions.

Does Treatment Hurt? Treatment should not be painful, although most patients are uncomfortable when they first present to us, and this is why they are seeking help. Occasionally patients may experience a little discomfort after treatment, but this is usually short lived and settles within 24 hours. The Osteopath will provide you with advice on pain management using stretches, exercise and general management advice for your problem. Most patients will feel a reduction in their pain following their first treatment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need? This depends on many factors including your specific condition, general health, age, diet, lifestyle and complying to exercises and stretches. Most patients feel benefit from the first couple of visits, and subsequent treatments are used to tackle the root cause and prevent re-occurrence. The treatments may then gradually be spaced out to provide long lasting relief. Unlike some professions, Osteopaths will examine your condition before and after every treatment, and will then discuss when to book in again. There will be no pressure to ‘bulk buy’ treatments. Some patients only need one or two visits, and some require a longer course, particularly if they have an underlying condition or degenerative joints.

Are Your Treatments Safe? Osteopathy has one of the best safety records of any medically related profession. Osteopaths are trained to recognise a wide range of conditions and when not appropriate to treat with osteopathy, a referral to another medical professional can be made if required. We are registered and regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and are governed by the Osteopaths Act (1993) which provides regulation in a similar manner to those in place for doctors and dentists.

Pilates @ Hadleigh Physiotherapy Why Pilates for Teenagers?

Teenage bodies undergo daily stresses from changes in posture and growing, to the demands of school, study and sport. We can all remember the feeling of a heavy school bag or the ache of muscles after a match. The feeling of strength and power that comes from using our muscles correctly can be achieved by introducing a child to the principles of Pilates. From an early age they can learn to develop their core stability and improve neuromuscular control, preventing those aches and pains or giving an advantage on the playing field now and long term.

Hadleigh Physiotherapy is pleased to offer a Teens Pilates Class run by a Chartered Physiotherapist. The class is specifically designed to meet the needs of both non-sporty teens and the competitive teenage athlete.

A teenage Pilates class comprises of safe exercises to help increase flexibility and coordination, while improving strength, balance and performance in sport.

Pilates can help the individual gain awareness of their body, understand how it works and develop good posture, leading to greater self-esteem.

Our Teens class runs on a Tuesday at 4.15 pm, for 45 minutes. Teens are also welcome to join our general class timetable at a discounted rate. Alternatively, 1:1 or 2:1 sessions are available. Please note Parental or Guardian consent is required.

Pilates for Pregnant and Postnatal Women We are delighted to now offer a specialist â&#x20AC;?Bumps and Babiesâ&#x20AC;? Pilates class for pregnant and postnatal women. This class meets the specific needs of women at any stage in the childbearing year. Babies are welcome to attend alongside mums (although no creche facilities are provided).

Pregnant and postnatal women are particularly at risk of back and pelvic pain, and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, as a result of the changes undergone during pregnancy. Pilates is ideally placed to address these changes, and to prevent or ease any aches and pains, or pelvic floor issues experienced. The Bumps and Babies class is held on a Thursday at 12.30 for 1 hour.

Curried Cauliflower Salad Salad Ingredients 1 cauliflower, 2 eating apples, 2 old carrots, 75g/3oz sultanas Ingredients for dressing 1 tablespoon olive oil 1bunch (around 10) spring onions or the equivalent in baby leeks, 2 level teaspoons hot Madras curry powder 6 level tablespoons mayonnaise, The juice & zest of 1 lemon or lime Salt & freshly ground pepper Method 1. Prepare the dressing as follows: a. Finely slice the onions/leeks & fry in the oil until starting to colour b. Stir in the curry powder & cook on a gentle heat for 1-2 minutes c. Remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool to lukewarm d. Stir in the mayonnaise together with the zest & juice of the lemon/lime e. Season to taste with salt & pepper 2. Cut the cauliflower into bite-sized florets and plunge into a pan of boiling water; blanch for 2 minutes, drain in a colander & flush under running water; drain again & place in a large bowl.

3. Peel the carrots & grate coarsely 4. Core the apples but don’t peel them; dice into 10-12mm pieces 5. Fold the carrots, diced apple & sultanas into the cauliflower 6. Add the dressing & turn gently with a fork until the mix is evenly coated 7. Transfer the salad to a serving bowl sized just enough to hold it; cover tightly with cling film & refrigerate for at least 2 hours; remove from refrigerator 10 minutes before serving.

Serves 6-8 as a side dish.

Hadleigh and District Probus Club’s Summer Outing was a visit on the 21st August 2018 to Wattisham Station Heritage museum within Wattisham Airfield, now an Army Base. The museum, housed in the original Wattisham Station Church, has a complete history of the airfield from its construction in the late 1930’s up to the present day. Probus members and their guests were greeted with a fascinating talk from Margaret Fisher whose grandfather and his brother owned the farms whose land was taken over to build the airfield between 1936 and the 1940s as it expanded during the Second World War, starting with the surveyors who arrived in 1936 when the Government realised it need more airfields, and who, while designing the layout of the airfield, stayed in her grandfather’s farmhouse, a building which was demolished when the airfield was built.

This is all set out in detail in Margaret’s book, ‘Memorabilia’, covering the development of the airfield up to 1943 and its effect on her farming family (cost £20 from the Idler Book Shop). We were then escorted round the airfield to a Cold War Hardened Aircraft Shelter to see a number of historic aircraft associated with the Airfield that the museum’s volunteers are preserving and restoring, including a Black Arrows Display Team Hawker Hunter and a Phantom FGR2. After the visit we retired for lunch in the Peacock Inn at Chelsworth.

On the first Wednesday in August we again held the Hadleigh and District Probus Ladies’ Annual Lunch at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa in the Garden Room overlooking their golf courses. Unlike last year when it rained, we started by sitting outside on the veranda before the meal, enjoying the lovely hot sunny day.

Apart from these special meetings to which ladies and friends are invited, Hadleigh and District Probus mens’ club meets for lunch on the third Wednesday of each month in the rear bar of ‘The George’ in Hadleigh. If you are a retired professional or businessman, why not come along and join us?

There is help At this time of the year a lot of people are starting to feel the difficulties of suffering with SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder. Although it has most likely been prevalent for a long time, it is only in recent years it has become more widely discussed. The condition is one which is felt to a greater or lesser extent by many people, whereby they feel negative emotions; sadness, anxiety; depression even, as the days become shorter and darker as we head into the winter months.

We are getting better at talking about many aspects of mental health difficulties whether it’s something we, ourselves, are dealing with or perhaps things that have become a problem for someone close to us. But despite this, many people still feel uninformed or unable to talk out loud to someone about what is happening with them. Often there is a feeling of isolation that accompanies those struggling, which in turn can make things seem worse still.

Local libraries are increasingly becoming one of the few places where anyone can go and feel safe, unjudged and are not rushed to make a purchase and then get out. They are a link to the wider community and whether someone chooses to engage with other patrons or one of the activities that take place there, or not, they are places that can reduce feelings of isolation.

What a lot of people don’t know, is that your local library has a range of selfhelp books available to borrow, many of which can be recommended by general practitioners to read to get valuable information and guidance. If you are struggling with any form of mental health issues, do talk to your GP and see if there is a title they would recommend borrowing from us or have a look at what we have that may feel relevant to you, to then speak to a professional about. If we don’t have it on the shelf, any library staff member would be happy to see if we have what you need available within the Suffolk Library system and order it in for you. The Navy in World War 1 A Lecture by Mark Mitchels Commemorating the end of World War 1 Raydon Village Hall, Saturday 3rd November at 3.00pm We have heard a great deal about the ghastliness of World War 1 particularly in the trenches - The Somme, Ypres, Passchendaele, - and fateful assaults like Gallipoli. What we know very little about is the influence the Royal Navy had on the war. We know it kept us safe from possible invasion, kept the German fleet at bay, ensured the supply of vital materials - but what was it like for the sailors? Several decks below in extreme heat, although those on deck will have been exposed to severe cold from time to time. And only the most primitive air-conditioning, so the atmosphere must have been stifling. What of food? Perhaps not as primitive as Medieval times with ships biscuits and weevils, but probably doubtful refrigeration. How long where they at sea and where? Did they get any support from our Allies or was it a lonely responsibility?

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s fourth annual sportive attracted 174 riders to the town on 2nd September. The sportive is named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. Mike Motteram, Chair of the Club said, “It was terrific to see so many riders, especially those that had never attempted 60 miles before. The feedback has been very positive. “The Flyer is a real team effort and we couldn’t have carried it off without 30 volunteers and that’s not counting the cake bakers.” Mike also thanked the Flyer’s sponsors - The George, Sunny Day Cycleworks, The East of England Co-op, Crockatt Garage, The Pedal House and Rattlesden Gliding Club. The Club will donate from the Flyer receipts to local rider, Paul Spraggons for his chosen charity, Prostate Cancer UK. Little Lord Fauntleroy is strutting around the house trying to look important. Yes, Kenny “the Boss” Chihuahua has been out to meet his fans, giving me the opportunity to email some exceptional news for you!

Mother, known to you as Maggie, will be awarded an Honorary Fellowship at the University of Suffolk later this month in recognition of her notable contributions to the community. I cannot tell you how proud and delighted we all feel about this well earned and deserved acknowledgement. Of course the good lady herself will have none of it, insisting she is merely a “facilitator” and will accept said accolade on behalf of the volunteers, without whom there would be no SESAW. Now back to the animals awaiting new homes, particularly a little puss called Marti who has been with us for six months. She arrived pregnant but the kittens are all weaned and she is ready for an adult only home where she would be the only cat.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday September 10th 2018: The speaker we had booked for this month was unable to come at the last minute so we all had a trip to north Cyprus instead, courtesy of Bill Haldane chairman of Suffolk Orchid Society. He shared with us his findings from an horticultural group visit to this island. As very few pesticides are used there a wide range of plants can be found growing in the wild, gladioli, irises, wild tulips, mandrakes, fennel and, of course, orchids. These plants will colonise an area given the opportunity and we were shown many examples of this, particularly the bee orchid which is related to our own native variety. Bill brought along three orchids from home which he grows in a specialist orchid house, one of these was perfumed which is apparently unusual for these plants, it was a good opportunity to get a close up view of these exotic specimens. The talk was followed by a question and answer session where a few growing problems were addressed.

The evening was very well attended with plenty of people to vote in the competition as well as a good number of entries, the winner was Fiona with her 'five runner beans on a plate'.

Our next get together on Friday October 12th 2018: We're off on our travels again this month to Furzeland farm, Wickham Bishops near Maldon. Some time ago the owner John Barker came to talk to the club about his forest garden and we are looking forward to seeing it first hand. If you are interested in joining us the postcode is CM9 4SZ and we are meeting there at 2.00pm.

Down to Earth ...with Dave The success stories of this year have to be the two types of squash grown, with the butternut and winter ones producing more than ever before. The greenhouse shelving looks like a greengrocers, with dozens of them lined up to ripen ready for storing and use well into the winter. The other success has been the bumper crop of apples on my two little trees on the allotment. What the apples lack in size they make up for in sweetness. One problem has been that due to the weight of fruit one very large branch has completely split and broken away requiring emergency attention with a pruning saw. Hopefully no permanent damage has been done to the tree. The large wound is just left to heal naturally with nothing painted onto it, I must make sure to thin out the baby fruits even more drastically next year. After a slow start the various beans are cropping surprisingly well, this must be due to the rain and warmth left in the soil, the more you pick them the more they will grow.

Over the hot dry ssummer the grass has taken a bit of a beating, now is a good time to give it some TLC. First dig out any big weeds, scarify it, paying particular particular attention to any bald areas. If possible make holes in the lawn with a special hollow tined tool or use a garden fork pushed into the grass every couple of inches and levered backwards, this loosens up the soil. Any really bald areas can then be lightly reseeded, I like to use a mixture of homemade compost, sharp sand and tough wearing lawn seed. This is mixed up in a bucket, broadcast and and gently brushed into the holes previously made, with the warmth in the soil the seed should germinate in a few days. If you use any lawn fertiliser make sure it is an autumn one and avoid nitrogenrich summer lawn feed as at this time of year this would promote soft growth vulnerable to winter damage.

If you can find any spring green or other brassica plants and you have a bit of space, pop a few in. They will get away quickly with the soil being so warm.

I was recently given a quantity of wood chips left from where an old tree stump had been been ground out. These are very slow to break down and do not immediately provide nutrients or improve the soil structure in the same way as compost does, even after a year or more they will still be rotting down. If dug into the soil they can use up nitrogen that could otherwise be feeding the plants, this is known as nitrogen robbery. They can however be used as a mulch around mature trees, making sure they do not touch the trunk. I will however mix them a little at a time into my composts on the allotment. Problem solved.

There’s an exciting line-up of well-loved authors and illustrators in the second Lavenham Children’s Book Festival on 20th and 21st October. The programme is aimed at children aged 3 up to 12, featuring tales about an angry dragon, Greek gods, a girl detective, East Anglian legends, and an unusual uncle. There’s story-telling, how-to-draw sessions, creative writing workshops and the festival ends with a very special musical event.

Among those taking part are Zeb Soanes the Radio 4 broadcaster with illustrator James Mayhew and their book Gaspard the Fox, the story of a real fox befriended by Zeb near his London flat. A.L. Kennedy, Costa Book Award winner and writer of adult fiction and non-fiction, tells the tale of eccentric Uncle Shawn and Bill. Bridget Holding, tutor in creative writing at Exeter University and founder of ‘Wild Words’ is running two half-day creative writing workshops for children aged 6-10 and 11-16. Kevin Crossley-Holland, translator of Beowulf from the Anglo-Saxon and a Patron of the Society for Storytelling, will be entrancing his audience with myths and legends of the Vikings in Between Worlds. The Festival ends with a very special experience for all the family. James Mayhew, who runs a series of concerts for children in venues including the Barbican and the Royal Albert Hall, joins forces with local professional musicians Yalda Davis (cello) and James Recknell (pianist) to illustrate stories accompanies by live music.

Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club We have just had our first Carpet Bowls Club wedding, although they didn't wear trainers! Alan and Daphne met at the Bowls Club and are now partners in life. They both enjoy Carpet Bowls and so could you, if you come along to our Tuesday morning session at 10am or our Thursday evening session at 7.30pm, or both, which are held at Lavenham Village Hall.

Stour Valley U3A Recent Meetings Our Summer Dinner & Social was held at a new venue, The Ipswich Best Western, Copdock and this sell out event was enjoyed by all members present who enjoyed good company and food.

As suggested by Members we introduced our inaugral August meeting, on Wednesday 8th, when Tania Harrington MA, artist, art lover and researcher talked on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Art Attack- A History of Vandalism In Art". She looked at works of art that have been vandalised over the years and the reasons behind these criminal attacks, divided into Political Motivations, Mad Attacks and Artist Attacks. It was a serious, at times disturbing, but also humorous illustrated talk.

On 12 September Taff Gillingham, Historian, presented a very British view on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Remembrance And The Great Warâ&#x20AC;?. Taff advises film makers emphasising the need for historical accuracy on the 1914/18 War. Future Meetings & Diary Dates Richard Heap, Production Director of Stephen Walters & Sons Ltd will talk on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Silk Weaving In Sudburyâ&#x20AC;? on Wednesday 10 October. He will cover the history of silk weaving and how it came to Sudbury; the Silk Road from China to Sudbury; how silk yarns are processed; the silk Trade; partnerships and relationships between supplier and customer and how the Company engages with the local community and the environment.

Our November 14th meeting will feature Davis Simmonds, a National Trust speaker and volunteer, introducing â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Coast Of East Angliaâ&#x20AC;?. The East Anglian coast is full of contrasts and has much beauty, history and wildlife.

His presentation will focus on National Trust coastal properties in Essex & Suffolk.

NEW - each month the Coffee Grinders will meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt, CO7 6SD from 10-12 noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members but gives all members the opportunity of meeting the activity Group Leaders and the Committee whilst enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 26 October.

Award-winning Brent Eleigh author David Long recently scooped the Blue Peter Book of the Year with the true-life adventures in SURVIVORS and his books have been translated into more than a dozen languages, He now has a sequel out which is published by Faber & Faber.

HEROES tells the true stories of more than thirty animals in wartime: dogs, pigeons, a cat called Simon, and even a bear which accompanied Allied troops during the liberation of Italy towards the end of World War II. Roadside eyesight checks You may have read in the press recently that three police forces are to start testing the eyesight of drivers they stop. The College of Optometrists welcome these plans and states, "People should have their eyes tested regularly by an optometrist to check they can see clearly and are safe to drive, and to ensure that any eye diseases they may have can be caught early so they are less likely to lose their sight.â&#x20AC;?

Car drivers (group 1) must be able to read a car number plate from 20 meters.

You also need to be able read the 6/12 line of letters on an optometrists Snellen chart using both eyes together.

If spectacles are required for distance, specially designed Rodenstock â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Roadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lenses are available from D J Dunstone to optimise vision for the dynamic task of driving. These are available in single vision distance or varifocal form and perform just as well in every other way.

Common Ground Theatre Company set a course for Polstead Village Hall On Wednesday 31st October, Ipswichbased community theatre company, Common Ground are returning to Polstead Village Hall with their magical, slightly surreal touring production of "The Mariner", a musical adaptation of Coleridgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gothic fantasy, "Rime of The Ancient Mariner" with its themes of respect for all living things, and manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creative â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and destructive urges. Its publication in 1792 heralded the arrival of the Romantic movement in England, and has held a place in the common consciousness ever since, inspiring generations of writers and film-makers The show will feature live action, puppetry, film and original music by Pat Whymark, sung by a live choir. The Mariner will be played by Julian Harries (New Wolsey Theatre, Colchester Mercury, RSC, National Theatre, Shared Experience, West End). Hadleigh Start the Season in a hurry!!

The opening two games of highly entertaining rugby have seen the First Team defeat Bury St Edmunds III and Harwich II. They have amassed 128 points, scoring 19 tries and conceding just 1. A good crowd enjoyed the first home match against Bury. There is a great atmosphere and positive attitude at the Layham Road Club this season which permeates from the First Team through to the minis. This is reinforced by the fact that over two thirds of the First Team have graduated through the Youth and minis section which make us very much a home grown club!

We are keen to encourage social and playing membership. All returning players, first timers and spectators are welcome.

We understand that young people sometimes need to ‘have a go’ before they commit to something, so we offer a 2-week free taster membership for youth and minis to give them the opportunity to experience rugby at one of Hadleigh’s hidden sporting gems. Fun Day brings out new faces young and old at Newton Green Would-be golfers from far and wide turned out to take part in an open fun day at Newton Green Golf Club.

Many of the visitors attended as families, with the club able to promote its wide range of membership benefits to a broad audience. Peter Philpott, chairman, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although many youngsters present had hardly touched a golf club previously, the fun nature of the mildly golf-linked activities led to a lot of enthusiastic participation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;However, a substantial number of those present had a good idea of the sport, with several having played at nine-hole courses in the region, but keen to consider a step up to a user-friendly club which also offers free lessons to all juniors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was good to see a number of parents that had previously dabbled in golf bringing their offspring with a view to making the sport a family activity. What the club offers in flexible memberships and support for players was an eyeopener for several visitors.â&#x20AC;?

Peter Blewitt Trophy In lovely early autumn conditions Stoke by Nayland held their rearranged Peter Blewitt American Greensomes competition. This Easter mixed event had been postponed because of adverse weather.

There was an 8.00 shotgun start on the Gainsborough Course, which is in mid preparation for WPGA International Challenge 2018 which started with the ProAm on Wednesday 12 September through to Saturday 15 September. It was very fitting that this competition was won by Janet Hodge and her partner Robbie Benson.

Janet recalled that she had joined Stoke in 1983 when the Captain was Peter Blewitt.

Peter, and his wife Rita, always enjoyed playing mixed golf and the Stoke members play for his trophy every year. Janet and Robbie were presented with the Peter Blewitt Trophy by Captains Alan Line and Elaine Davidson.

In second place spot were Ian McKay and Maryan Griffiths.
