It’s Show Time!

Preparations for the 180th Hadleigh Show on Saturday 18th May are nearly complete and we hope you will join us for a great family day out at Holbecks Park.

The Grand Ring will welcome back The Monster Trucks whilst Titan the Robot will be touring the Park again this year. The Flower marquee will mark our 180th anniversary with classes representing all areas of the show - from the fairground to the Stewards hats, whilst the Food Hall and catering areas give plenty of opportunity to buy your lunch! Mark David from The Cooking Experience in Hadleigh, and his team will be showing off their skills and cooking up a host of dishes throughout the day using local produce in our cookery marquee.

Coast 2 Coast Challenge - Why would anyone walk 192 miles and climb 27,000 feet which is the height of Everest?

Four friends Jimmy, Jim, Anthony and Richard will be taking on the challenge of walking from the West Coast to East Coast in aid of Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance .The walk starts in St Bees, on the West Coast of Cumbria and finishes at Robin Hoods Bay on the East Coast of Yorkshire, travelling through the Lake District, crossing the Pennines at Shap then onwards across the North Yorkshire Moors to Robin Hood Bay. The walk was developed by that famous walker Alfred Wainwright.

Tracey Loynds, from Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance spent some time talking with all four walkers to find out more about the walkers and what has inspired them to get involved.

Jimmy Wilding the ‘ringleader’ whose original idea it was to take on the challenge said “we are four men from Hadleigh with a combined age of nearly 300 years! We will start the walk on June 16th and we are hoping to arrive at Robin Hoods Bay 12 days later, on two of the days we will have to walk over 20 miles. We plan to post on the “Visit Hadleigh” and “Hadleigh Dementia Friends” Facebook Page each day with details of our great adventure.

Although Richard and I said some while ago we would like to walk the C2C in many ways I wish now I wasn’t. My wife Margaret and I have been living with her dementia for several years. It really is a cruel disease which slowly takes away a person’s personality and faculties. With the help of many wonderful people and lots of prayers from others, she is still able to live at home. No cure short term seems likely but prevention is a possibility, albeit a long way off” Richard Groom said “JW and I first spoke about doing the C2C walk - not really having a clue what it actually entailed- a couple of years ago and were very pleased when Jim and Anthony asked to join. I’m hoping that this challenge will help to raise lots of money for a charity that is close to my heart for various reasons” Anthony Foster said “We lived in Hadleigh for the past two and a half years whilst Sue was under training as a Curate. Jimmy mentioned he wanted to do something before his 80th. Coast to coast was spoken about and it took me back 50 years when a group of youngsters from my own town of Scarborough took on the ‘said’ walk for their Duke of Edinburgh’s award. Being one of only two who had a car, I was asked to drive between the Hostels with luggage.

When the opportunity arose I took to putting the boots on and did a little walking, so this is a great chance to go from one side to the other.”

Jim Sephton explained “I love walking in mountainous and remote places, they make me feel more alive and in touch with nature so the idea of walking through some fantastic scenery was too good to miss…. Hadleigh During The Second World War - A New Book 6

Eighty years ago, Hadleigh and the rest of the country found itself at war. The town HADLEIGH DURING was then a small community, still WORLD WAR TWO agriculturally based, with its maltings, corn 1939 - 1945 mills, blacksmiths and farriers. Although The Home Front Story the dark clouds of war had been developing during the 1930s Hadleigh carried on as it always had with its weekly live and deadstock market held on a Monday.

This then was the town, but soon Hadleigh men were being recruited under the Urban District Council for Air-Raid Precautions (A.R.P.) training. The military in the late 1930s built the huge army Compiled by Roger Kennell workshops complex at the lower end of Boswell Lane. This was the largest building in the town, with both soldiers and vehicles coming and going.

On Sunday 3rd September 1939 was declared on Nazi Germany. Thus what life like in the town during 1939 – 1945? The evacuees arriving, a military presence, the ‘Dump’ and air-raids, then later a new influence on the town when at nearby Raydon the American airfield was constructed and became operational, all this combined causing Hadleigh to become a changed town.

A new booklet titled ‘Hadleigh During the Second World War – The Home Front Story’ has been researched and will be launched at an exhibition to be held on Saturday 20th July 2019 at St. Mary’s Church, Hadleigh.

Free admission, but the event is to raise funds for the Friends of St. Mary’s Church who assists in providing funds to maintain this fine medieval building.

Great excitement was had at school on Thursday 28th March when the first of our new ducklings were born. Throughout the day children were thrilled to watch the eggs rock and the ducklings make their exhausting journey out of the shell and into the incubator.

We had five, a mixture of Indian runner and abacot ranger ducks they are all very cute and fluffy. We have a friendly farmer who wants to add ducks to his pond, so they will have a lovely new home after the Easter break. Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed looking after them.

Whatfield school has been represented at various events over this term, including at under 9’s and under 7’s multi-skills festivals held at Hadleigh High.

It is really appreciated that the High School organise brilliant sporting events which are not only designed for the older pupils but can also include younger competitors too.

We also took part in a mixed school team at the Suffolk Panathlon event, where our pupils were proud to come in at 2nd place. The team comprised of pupils from Whatfield, Bildeston and Hadleigh CP, and they played well together as well as being proud to show off their silver medals and tee shirts! Sixteen our pupils also represented the school at Royal Holbrook School prior to the Easter break for the annual cross-country event, more than 150 pupils from various schools took part and we are delighted that one of our students came in the top four and two more within the top 16. At Whatfield we have always included younger pupils in our teams and this has proven to be a positive benefit to younger, talented pupils, who get a chance to learn about playing in a team and can shine at something they enjoy!

Edwardstone Cricket Club The cricket season is fast approaching. Edwardstone Cricket Club will be playing in the Hunts county division 1 league and T20 plate tournament. We are a small village team, with a developing mixed youth section and are always on the lookout for new players of all ages and abilities. Youth training commences on the 27th April and runs until the end of July. More details are available from the website. Adults training commences from Thursday 25th April 18:30 until dusk. We have equipment and a bowling machine to aid with training and development. Training is held at Boxford Playing field along with

Hadleigh Show Programme Cover Winner Chosen The winner of the 2019 Hadleigh Show Programme cover competition has been announced. Each year Hadleigh Farmers’ Agricultural Association ask local primary schools to design a front cover for the Hadleigh Show programme. This year’s theme was “If I were a Farmer…”

The overall winner was Kiano, aged 6, from Beaumont Community Primary School and his winning entry will be printed on the 2019 Show programme.

Lucy Batchelor-Wylam, HFAA education liaison officer said “Kiano’s friendly scarecrow, strong use of colour and charming cow certainly won over the judges this year!” The 3 runners up came from St Mary’s in Hadleigh, Boxford and Bildeston Primary Schools. The top 14 covers will be on display in the Education Tent at the Show on 18th May where the theme this year is “Your Sunday Dinner”.

‘Lavenham Airfield Walks’ Interested in the US Army Air Force’s presence in East Anglia in WWII? Then spend a morning walking in the steps of the Mighty Eighth’s 487th Bomb Group on Lavenham Airfield. You will be accompanied by guides who will take you to areas not usually accessible to the public, whilst painting a picture of operational life on the base in WWII and how the airfield will forever be associated with the creation of the film ‘Twelve O’Clock High’. The walks take place on the second Sunday of May, July and September from 10.00 – 1.30.

Places are limited so booking is essential. Adult tickets cost £10, under 16s £5 (sorry no dogs) and can be booked in person at Lavenham Blue Vintage Tea Rooms in Lavenham or by telephone on 01787-248295.

All proceeds go towards the construction of a memorial to those 487th Bomb Group personnel who lost their lives whilst serving at Lavenham Airfield.

Orchard Barn wins Awards to provide FREE workshops Volunteers at Orchard Barn are over the moon. OBee (the Community Interest Company who run Orchard Barn near Battisford) have been awarded a Heritage Lottery grant of £9,900. This funding will enable us to provide new and existing volunteers with practical training in Medieval Style Timber Framing and Timber Frame Repairs. Our current project is both Living Archaeology and Re-enactment, and this funding will help with the reinstatement of a Tudor Timber Frame at Orchard Barn.

FREE training is available soon. We are recruiting volunteers who would like to undertake the training and then practice their new (but very old) skills to further the project. Please email sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk if you are interested in participating.

8 May – Make your own compost This FREE two-hour workshop is provided under the banner of International Compost Awareness Week. It shows you how to convert garden waste and kitchen peelings into rich plant food.

29 May – Forest Sessions for Children An experienced forest school teacher will run a two-hour session for children aged 0-8 years and another session for those aged 9-12 years.

GSOIBBON S LICITO RS Howard at Michael Jay Tailoring My dear readers: I find it difficult to believe that it is now seventeen years since I opened my office in Hadleigh. As you will recall, I moved to these parts from Pinner in Middlesex and soon commenced in business in Hadleigh. It is sad that with such an obsession with the internet, businesses such as mine will be few and far between in the years to come.

And yet, it is a firm like mine where one receives personal service and not some faceless experience when a different person answers the telephone every time you ring, that is, if anyone answers at all. The picture shows me with Michael Jarvis (the proprietor) in the workshops of Michael Jay Tailoring at Tomo Business Park IP14 5EP in Stowmarket Tel. 01449 614602. I do enjoy my clothes and Michael Jay Tailoring with a pedigree in military tailoring are able to create lovely jackets with various different trims, facings and linings. So, should you need a new suit or an unusual tuxedo for that special occasion or at the Captain’s Table do telephone Michael or Janice Jarvis at Michael Jay. The jacket that I am wearing is made of yellow and baby blue silk and I can guarantee I will not see another.

It is at this time of year that Frank, my chauffeur likes to get out in the grounds of the Gibbons’ residence whilst Maria my housekeeper Spring cleans the various wings. Frank has been tinkering with Maria’s water feature which now has plenty of pressure. I recently went to see a friend in Northampton and en route, Frank called at Milton Keynes’ Station to collect another of the party. He is big in outer space and is in fact a planetary inspector.

People at large are always surprised that a conveyancing transaction takes on average 3 months from start to finish. Where there is a chain, one is always dependent upon someone else to have done something.

There are so many interests that can exist in one parcel of land and that is why it is important to have the work carried out in a competent fashion. As I was told in my days as an articled clerk “there are no short cuts in law”. The recipe itself is to celebrate the arrival of Fabulous Fungi, an exciting addition to the Friday market. As many of you will know, I am a big fan of locally grown produce, (Remember my friend BASIL? Buy And Source It Locally) so when friend Stefanie May told me she was starting up a business selling home grown oyster mushrooms, my recipe radar hunted down this simple but tasty dish, with Mark David’s expert help! Of course, you don’t have to do anything too fancy with oyster mushrooms; cooked in a small amount of butter they come up full of flavour, add them to an omelette for a really tasty lunch.

Oyster Mushrooms in Cream and Sherry Sauce Ingredients: 500 gm oyster mushrooms, 2 heaped tablespoons of crème 25 gm butter, 2 cloves of garlic, crushed, ½ teaspoon dried oregano 3 tablespoons dry sherry or white wine, Grated nutmeg – a small amount Method Wipe, but don’t wash the mushrooms. This preserves flavour and nutrients. Chop them roughly. Heat the butter in a frying pan until just browning.

Add the chopped mushrooms and fry them on a high heat, turning them regularly, until they start to brown. (At least two minutes) Add the sherry or wine and cook for a further two minutes. Add the garlic, crème fraiche, oregano and nutmeg. Stir and season to taste. Simmer for a further minute and then serve.

New groups in Hadleigh to Support Carers, Cared for and especially those living with Dementia Jill Mason was appointed by HDAA (The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance) in 2017 to develop activities and support people living with dementia and their Carers. Jill is already known for running Together Tuesday at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure on Tuesday afternoons 2pm – 4pm. Jill has also been working with Hadleigh Bowling Club and has also formed a new group on Wednesdays.

The group at the Bowling Club meets on a Friday afternoon commencing May 3rd between 2.30 and 4pm, the group is open to Carers and Cared for. In the summer Petangue is played and in the Winter Indoor Bowls all with of course a cup of tea. If you would like to come and watch the bowls rather than play then that is fine too, a warm welcome awaits you at the club.

Wellbeing Wednesdays is a new initiative, this group has been formed in response to an identified need for Carers to have respite from the task of caring. To allow the Carer to be able to take part in exercise classes, swimming, table tennis or going to the gym whilst the person they care for is supported by Jill, staff and dedicated Volunteers for up to 2 hours. This group runs from 10.30 to 12.30 on a Wednesday morning commencing 1st May at The programme for the month is Hadleigh Pool & Leisure. Jill invites you to come along and meet her and the a volunteers, the group is relaxed and the welcome friendly.

The volunteers are a huge part of the groups that Jill facilitates, there are many volunteer opportunities available. If you have an hour or two to spare and would be interested in volunteering or would like to find out more about the opportunities available please contact Jill.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk May in South Suffolk brings much to look forward to. Near the top of the list must surely be the Hadleigh Show. Last year this most wonderful of events, enjoyed by so many of my constituents, happened to coincide with the Royal Wedding. I must admit, following the UK’s decision to leave the EU, I doubt many of us expected this year’s Hadleigh Show to kick off a week potentially culminating in elections to the European Parliament.

Of course, holding European elections is a legal ‘default’ given – at the time of writing – the UK’s delayed departure from the EU. It may be that by the time you read this we in Parliament will have found a form of Brexit to agree a majority for, thus ensuring we would not be required to participate in the MEP elections. For this is really the key to our present difficulties: a failure to agree the best way to implement the referendum result of 2016.

As your Member of Parliament, I very much regret that we ever ended up in such a mess, and I hold my hands up that we – your elected Government and Parliament as one body politic – have failed you, since the core promise of both main parties at the last general election to deliver Brexit was not delivered in a timely manner. Of course, hindsight is a powerful tool in these situations, but it solves nothing to speculate on what we might have done differently. The fact is when I was first elected in 2015 it was on the basis that we as a country finally had to make our mind up, for better or worse, whether we wanted to stay in the EU or leave. After years and years of debilitating disagreement over the European issue, particularly in my party but also across our nation, it was decision time: and we chose to leave.

I have done my best to implement that instruction in a way that balances economic strength against the restoration of sovereignty. I will continue to do so - whilst looking forward to another fantastic show season!

1940’s Vintage Revival event The Delphi Centre in Sudbury will be hosting a Vintage Revival day on Saturday 22nd June from 10:00am to 5:00pm to raise funds for "UPBEAT" Heart support charity and the Delphi Centre Refurbishment fund. No problems at all? Some people think when you become a Christian and follow Jesus, life becomes easy, you don't have problems anymore. Well, I'm sorry but that's just not how it goes! If you think Jesus is like a knight in shining armour on a white stallion who gallops in when you face struggles and the baddies just turn around and run away, then I'm sorry but that's not how things go. The Christian life isn't like that.

If you're a Christian, you're not exempt from cancer, you could break your leg, lose your job or be in a car crash, you're not exempt. The good thing is Jesus left us with something to help us through the hard times. He left us His peace, He called it His shalom, so when faced with difficulties, we aren't helpless. In the Bible in John 14 v 27 Jesus tells His disciples “Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; but not as the world gives! don't let your heart be troubled or afraid” Sometimes people see Christians in times of trouble and can't understand why they aren't tearing their hair out or weeping. The answer is they have what Paul called in Philippians 4 v 7 “a peace that passes all understanding” Once you accept Christ as your Saviour and follow His teachings you will be given this, and you can face the things that distress many people with a peace in your heart. At this time of year we see young people who are revising and cramming in order to pass those all important school or university exams. We see teenagers and children with 'tension' type problems across their shoulder girdle, upper back and necks. And the answer is No. Pilates is technically difficult; it requires you to achieve and maintain good form and posture whilst moving through a range of exercises.

It demands continual mental and physical effort, focusing on correct muscle activation. And yes, it can be physically hard, with a burn and a muscle shake and a bead of sweat!

Why should I consider Pilates?

Pilates focuses on improving posture and muscle function.

The aim is to lengthen tight muscles that pull the body out of ideal posture and to strengthen the muscles that hold the body in good posture.

For example; to alleviate low back pain, the hamstrings and hip flexors commonly need to be lengthened and the lower abdominals and gluteals need to be activated and strengthened. When we use more ‘functional exercises’, we train the body to maintain good posture whilst moving.

Pilates is a form of exercise and body conditioning devised by Joseph Pilates and has been a training vehicle for elite athletes, both men and women, for over 50 years. With a growing number of elite and professional sportsmen making Pilates part of their training regimes, the benefits of ‘Pilates for Men’ is an increasingly common subject for debate.

The benefits will vary, but for most people, whether a sedentary office worker or an elite athlete including Premier League Footballers and the England Cricket Team to name a few, incorporating Pilates into their training regime delivers improvement in a number of areas; muscle strength and control, balance, flexibility and injury prevention. Elmsett Litter Pick 2019 Following an appeal in March’s Village Editions, the village Newsletter and posters around Elmsett, the photo shows the people who collected their high vis jackets, safety instructions, bags and pickers from outside the village shop on Saturday 23 March.

Volunteers chose the area that they wanted to pick and when they would do it. Although the pick was focused on 23 March, with the aim of clearing Elmsett from litter as much as possible, other volunteers who were not able to be there then had previously agreed to clear an area at another time. Overall the response was the best to date with around 20 people offering their help.

Elmsett Parish Council who supported the campaign thank the volunteers for their time and Babergh District Council for supplying the bags, pickers and high vis jackets.

Hattie’s Haberdashery will be joining us on the market every Friday morning from the end of April when her stall will be a treasure trove for sewers and makers with a collection of ribbons, buttons, needles, fabric scissors, sewing boxes and material remnants.

We are also really pleased to welcome Colletts Farm with their delicious homemade pies. Sophie makes all her pies in Wormingford using their own beef and local chicken and covered with the crispiest homemade pastry. To start with Sophie will be at the market once a month, on the third Friday but if she gets lots of support then maybe we can encourage her to become more regular?

Stour Valley Men’s Probus Club Recent Meetings At our recent AGM Dave Carman was voted in as President and Speaker Secretary, Graeme Forsyth Secretary and Val Pretty Treasurer. On 3 April Chris Parfitt introduced us to "Bhutan, Land of The Thunder Dragon" and David Ablewhite returned again and this time present "The Horrible Hanoverians" on 17 April.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 As you read this, you might be enjoying a relaxing May Day break. Our volunteers always turn up, even on Bank Holidays, to care for the animals including Sky, a Whippet/Lurcher and Biscuit, a Chihuahua/Jack cross. They are a friendly pair that will not be separated and so they will stay with us for as long as it takes.

Peter and Flopsy, two and a half year old rabbits and Harley, a ten month old rabbit are all really friendly and looking for a home with plenty of space to run around. Please remember, rabbits make delightful pets but they are not just for Easter. They need permanent homes that are clean, safe and secure because they can live for more than ten years.

Undeterred by the bitter wind, visitors to our Easter Fair at Long Melford kept coming, most headed home with bags stuffed full of bargains and prizes. A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the event so successful, a fantastic £2,700 was raised for the animals. Our next event is a £1 Sale at Newton Green Village Hall on Saturday 15th June.

New volunteers are always welcome, leave a message or email via our website if you are interested. Tasks range from fundraising to caring for ponies, sheep, pigs, chickens, cats and dogs, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

Sylvia Martin collects her MBE It was time to don smart hats and head to Buckingham Palace…Prince Charles was awaiting Sylvia Martin’s arrival to be awarded her MBE. Sylvia was awarded her MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) at the beginning of April for public and political service. She held senior roles in local government in East Sussex and has since moved to Raven Way, Hadleigh.

Accompanied by her two daughters Alison, who lives in Assington and Lucinda who flew across for the occasion from Calgary, Canada, Sylvia had a wonderful day at the Palace followed by a celebration tea at The Ritz. It was the perfect day for wearing her new hat, which Sylvia bought from Threadneedles in the High Street. “I had a very memorable day,” Sylvia comments. “I told Prince Charles that I originally joined the Conservatives as a teenager to meet boys!” That early decision has led to a distinguished career in local government and politics and now her MBE. Brand new obstacle course and mud run for Suffolk families A brand new event is coming to Suffolk this June as the makers of the Whole Hog and Boss Hog launch the Piglet, Junior Hog. The Piglet, Junior Hog will be an entry-level version of the popular obstacle courses and mud runs that have been part of the Suffolk calendar for over 10 years. It will be aimed at those who want to take part with their children or just those who would like to run a shorter route, and benefit East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

Sponsored by Taylor Wimpey, the event will take place on Sunday, 9 June on the lands of Wantisden Hall near Woodbridge, with two courses for runners.

One will be over two kilometres and feature at least 10 obstacles. Children aged eight to 11 can take part, provided each is accompanied by a participating adult. The other will be over four kilometres and feature at least 20 obstacles. It will be open to anyone aged 12 and over.

Louisa Smart, EACH Suffolk Community Fundraiser, said: “Having been a charity partner of the Whole Hog for the last two years, we’re delighted the organisers’ support is going a step further this year. “Families who come along to this are guaranteed of a muddy, fun-filled day out, with obstacles such as cargo nets, tunnels, rivers and monkey bars likely to feature.”

Runners will set off in waves at 9.30am, 10am, 10.30am, 11am and 11.30am.

Tickets range in price from £12.50 to £17.50. Everyone will receive a medal at the end. There will be food and refreshments available.

For some it’s a pleasure, for some it’s a chore, and for some it is usually accompanied by the nagging fear that you’re doing it all wrong, but however you garden, chances are you will be doing some over the coming weeks.

Bridge Farm Plants in Monks Eleigh - on the same site as the Corn Craft tearooms - aims to offer something for everyone. If you know what a perennial is you will revel in the choice: usually 250-300 different varieties at any one time. And if you don’t, you will appreciate the signs explaining these are plants that come back year after year. Manager Catherine McMillan said: “All the staff are plant lovers and we want to make it as easy as possible for others to enjoy their gardens. “We’ve all had a hand in growing the plants we sell, either on site or at our parent nursery, Katie’s Garden, so we want them to continue living happily when they leave us!”

Plants are laid out to make it easy to find what you are looking for, whether it is the best Roses for pots, something that will grow in shade, easy-care shrubs or maybe ideas for well-drained soils (hint: think alpines, succulents, herbs & lavenders). Particularly popular at this time of year are the summer patio and basket plants.

Catherine said: “They are a fun way to get started as you get lots of flowers quickly. We give care tips and suggestions for planting combinations but emphasise there is no right or wrong when it comes to taste!”

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Wednesday April 10th 2019: Last month saw several carloads of club members heading to West Stow near Bury St Edmunds. There we visited Fuller's Mill Garden, a beautiful area of woodland on the banks of the river Lark. The sun shone as we wandered through the manicured lawns and flowerbeds. The restful sound of running water made a peaceful setting with lilies and marginal plants to enjoy under the blossom trees.

Tea and cake on the lawn was enjoyed before many of us purchased a variety of plants from the sales table..... the perfect end to a tranquil afternoon. The garden is cared for by 'Perennial', a UK charity dedicated to those who work in or are retired from horticulture. Open from April to September ... well worth a visit, a plantsman's paradise.

Monday May 13th 2019: This month sees us return to Hadleigh Town Hall where our speaker, Martin Gibbison will be sharing with us his knowledge of climbers. The meeting begins at 7.30pm and entrance is £4 for visitors and £2 for members to include refreshments. There will be the usual raffle and plant sales table and the competition for May is ' three alliums in a vase'. Looking ahead one month to June the club will be involved with the 'Hadleigh Hidden Gardens' on Saturday June 8th and one of our members, Sue, will be opening her garden in Semer on Sunday June 23rd as part of the National Garden Scheme, more details next month. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Down to Earth ...with Dave A recent article in the newspaper caught my attention, it was titled 'Is your compost heap killing you?' It seems that some scientists are concerned that a drug resistant super fungi may be growing in our compost heaps. The most dangerous one is aspergillus, this is a mould that flourishes on dead plant material and is apparently common in compost heaps.

Anyone who has a lung complaint or a weakened immune system should avoid breathing in any dust from the compost, piles of garden rubbish or from bags of brought in compost. The best preventative measures seem to be to keep the compost moist and, something that I have always advocated, do not turn the heap. From my experience heaps are never allowed to dry out, nor are they turned. I for one have no intention of giving up my beloved composts, but I will be a bit more aware of the possible risks.

On a more cheerful note the seed sowing and planting is well underway. The first two rows of potatoes are in and generously earthed up in case of a late frost, but as yet there are no signs of shoots. Seeds such as spinach, chard, parsnips and carrots have been sown directly on the allotment. The first pea plants grown in the greenhouse have been carefully hardened off and planted out, with luck they will survive a slight frost. The greenhouse is full of various little seedlings all at various stages of their growth. It is a constant job moving them from the heated trays to other spots where they will grow on before eventually being planted out. The hanging basket with the three tumbling toms planted in is hanging up in the greenhouse. Once all danger of frost is past they will be hung on the wall at the back of the house, this works very well and is just as attractive as a basket of flowers.

On a recent visit to Perrywoods garden centre we bought three home grown tomato plants, these are first class plants, better than your average. At present they are growing on in the greenhouse but in a few weeks time they will be planted out into very large pots filled with multipurpose compost and stood outside against the side of the greenhouse.

As some of you who have travelled on the A1071 to or from Ipswich recently will have noticed, Taylor Wimpey have begun work on their Wolsey Grange development. As part of the conditions leading to the grant of planning permission, a series of works and alterations will be carried out on the A1071 between Hadleigh Road and the London Road.

These works are scheduled in three phases and will commence in May with initially, work to be carried out on Poplar Lane and lasting until August, work being carried out seven days a week from 07:00 to 19:00 to minimise the length of the works.

More importantly from the end of August for a period of up to 14 weeks the A1071 will be closed from Poplar Lane to the London Road requiring a diversion via Hadleigh Rd and London Rd to navigate around the road closure.

During this period the road will be widened with an extra lane leading up to the London Road and a dedicated cycle lane will also be provided. In addition additional traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Poplar lane and the A1071. The final phase will be the re-alignment of the traffic islands and the junction of the A1071 and London Road / Scrivener Drive and include the provision of upgraded traffic lights. This will require the traffic to be reduced to single lane working. This will last for a period of 4 weeks, during this time traffic from Scrivener Drive will only be permitted to left turn in and left turn out of Scrivener Drive.

As can be seen from the scope of the works there is liable to be possibly severe congestion at peak times, particularly during the closure period so please be aware of this when planning any visits to Ipswich from May until the works are completed.

Index and Introduction to a Directory of Suffolk Millers 1086-1986 Eileen says “I have collected a list of Suffolk Millers from many different sources including Apprentice Bonds, Census, Deeds, Directories.

Newspapers. Parish Records, rental books, Settlement Orders, Suffolk Record Office and Wills. Then I have arranged the 56 pages into 5 sections, 1 & 2 are arranged in town order, 3 & 4 by surname and 5 & 5a are Millwrights. All this information includes a reference to the source so more research can be continued on the family or Mill you are looking for.

This book came about because while researching my family tree and having found a Miller in my family in 1580 in Godalming, Surrey, and then another in 1671 in Layham Suffolk, and again in Framfield Sussex in 1576, my interest in Watermills was born. Copyright is with Eileen Blythe.

It is very noticeable how many Mills were present in Suffolk prior to the turn of the 1900’s. Most villages and towns had at least one mill and several in the larger towns such as Hadleigh. What is also equally noticeable is how very few survive today and even fewer that are in working order or open to the public as a mill powered either by wind or water.

Suffolk Mills Open Weekend is May 12th to 13th when most of the mills that have not been converted to residential accommodation or lost over the years are open for public viewing.

Wake up to Spring and get out on your bike The clocks have gone forward, bikes are being dusted off and the lanes around Hadleigh are littered with spring flowers.

Hadleigh Cycling Club is back on the road with events for everyone!

Sunday club rides start from The George car park at 8.0am.

These are social rides of between 20 and 40 miles.

Everyone is welcome and no one gets left behind, including capable children accompanied by an adult. If enough people turn up we can spilt into two groups, one for those who prefer a gentle ride and one for those who want a faster ride.

Weather dependent – check the website, Facebook or Twitter if in doubt.

Monday evening rides have started again from the High School at 6.30pm.

These are gentle rides for 1 to 1 1/2 hrs, particularly for those new to riding on road in a group. For Club riders, there are also rides at a range of speeds on Thursday evenings, Friday morning and Saturdays. If you prefer to cycle alone there are lots of suggested routes on the Club’s website: https://www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk/club-routes. The Club’s Junior programme runs on Wednesday evenings at 6.00 pm at Hadleigh Community Primary School, The Junior Club provides training from British Cycling qualified coaches in a variety of cycling techniques. Home-Start in Suffolk - Volunteers Needed!

Home-Start in Suffolk is a charity which supports families across the county where there is at least one child under the age of 12. Families maybe in need of support for a variety of reasons, because of post-natal depression, illness or disability, isolation, family breakdown or bereavement. We train and recruit volunteers who support families by visiting them in their homes on a weekly basis. We are seeking more volunteers to help us to meet the growing number of families in need of Home-Start support in the Bury St Edmunds Area. We offer our volunteers accredited training, ongoing support and friendship.

Here is one Family’s story of how Home-Start in Suffolk helped them. “HomeStart met Mum Lauren and her family shortly after their new baby was diagnosed with brain damage. Lauren and her husband were overwhelmed with the emotional and practical demands of caring for a baby who suffers from multiple seizures and is unsettled day and night whilst juggling the needs of their other young children. Life was turned upside down for the family with hospital appointments, admissions and an unknown future. Their health visitor referred them to Home-Start Suffolk who introduced them to Ruth a trained Home-Start volunteer. Ruth visits Lauren and the children once a week providing support when Lauren’s husband works late.

Having Ruth there to “share the load” enables all of the children to get one-one attention; reading, playing or doing school work. Mum or Ruth cook dinner and they can all sit down together whilst Ruth holds or sings to the baby.

Lauren’s says she felt “immediately at ease” with Ruth and found it easy to talk to her when she was having a difficult week. Although the family’s situation remains the same, her visits have allowed the family time to adjust and explore what ongoing support is needed and available to them”.

Suffolk Villages Festival Last two concerts of Spring programme We take great pleasure in presenting the next two concerts in the Suffolk Villages Festival 2019 Spring series.

Venetian Splendour will be a rare chance to hear some of the grand ceremonial motets and instrumental pieces for divided choirs written by Giovanni Gabrielli, along with works by Schutz, Praetorius and Scheidt.

Hadleigh Bowling Club The start of the season! A day everyone’s been building up to all winter.

Bowlers emerge from their indoor venues, winters in the sunshine and in some cases probably hibernation, blinking in the sunshine as they step on to the outdoor green. The green is in perfect condition thanks to Doug Doust who’s been feeding, mowing and watering it over the winter with his merry band of helpers. Last week a crowd of members turned up to prepare the clubhouse and the grounds, and had only just finished the job when the hailstorm arrived. Bowed but undaunted they bravely made their way inside to eat the bacon buns that were probably what they came for in the first place. It’s a packed season ahead with teams playing in a wide range of external leagues as well as friendlies, and the internal knockout competitions leading up to finals day on 14 September.

Anyone wanting to play or just see what it’s all about are very welcome to come to the Open Days at Stone Street on 11 and 12 May when you will be looked after by friendly experienced players who’ll help you have a go. Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club We have welcomed over 100 new children into the club since Christmas and we hope that they have enjoyed learning lots of new gymnastics skills. During the school holidays we ran workshops on specific skills and fun play sessions which proved extremely popular. The term has been a busy one for our elite gymnasts, with 27 passing their County grade and 29 competing in the County general gymnastics competition. A special congratulations goes to the 7 girls who have qualified for Regional finals in general gymnastics and we wish them luck in June. Twenty of our coaches took part in a CPD session run by former head coach of South Essex Gymnastics Club, Matt Jackson. It was a great afternoon and we are looking forward to using new coaching ideas with all of our gymnasts during the Summer term. This term we are excited to be offering “Baby stars”, our new pre-school class for 18 months - 3 year olds. It is a coach lead, semi-structured class, which allows parents to participate, learn and interact with their little ones through gymnastics. Water Antics Ahoy!

Are you one of Hadleigh’s finest? Prove yourself by getting a team together for the Great Hadleigh Duck and Raft Race. Taking place on 9th June, this annual self-wetting and splashing on the River Brett is the stuff of legend – the Cup bears the proud engraving of fabulous past teams – including last year’s Spirit of Fitness winners. Presented at the After Race party at The George (official race pub), bathe in the adoration of your community!

The Duck Race precedes the finals of the Rafting – tickets for your own piece of Poultry Plastic are available from Keith Avis Newsagents, Scout leaders, The George or have a chat with us when we’re outside Partridges. No live feathered ducks are harmed in the staging of this event – though as spectators they seem fairly enthusiastic. The racing (plastic) ducks are all under a strict fitness regime and will be in prime condition come Sunday 9th.

Teams wearing fancy dress generate more support from the watching crowds – be brave and bold in your choice of swimwear. Life vests are available if wanted and Scouts and their Leaders will be ensuring safety from accompanying canoes. Registration forms are available at The George, with teams of up to 6 allowed (enabling changes between heats or super-powering the raft with muscle). We ask for a £10 donation to Scouts from each team.

First race is at 10am on Sunday 9th June near Toppesfield Bridge. Sizzling sausages, golden browned burgers and other Scouting refreshments will be available. Scouting is flourishing in Hadleigh - come and support us on 9th June and if interested in getting involved talk to our leaders.

Bentwaters Cold War Museum The Bentwaters Cold War Museum has opened its doors for 2019 and is a popular attraction for visitors to the Suffolk coastal area and for those interested in aviation and military installations previously denied access to the public. The museum is based in the United States Air Force (USAF) hardened command post on the former Bentwaters airbase which closed after the withdrawal of the USAF in 1993 and is believed to be the only such building open to the public in the UK and Europe. Run by volunteers from the Bentwaters Aviation Society, the building is a large bunker made available to the public to view following 3 years of work to renovate and refurbish and opened in 2007. Further information on the society can be found at www.bentwaters-as.org.uk and for the museum at www.bcwm.org.uk The main “War Operations Room” and “Battle Cabin” have been restored to original condition including the original decontamination showers and airlocks allowing members of the public to see these once top secret, high security military installations in detail in an eerie atmosphere evoking the Cold War period. Other parts of the building have been turned into exhibition rooms, covering the history of RAF Bentwaters from W.W.II until the base closed in 1993. Included in this are histories of the units that operated from the airfield, particularly the 81st Fighter Wing. Also included is the other airfield which was part of the “twin base” complex - RAF Woodbridge, again covering the period from W.W.II until the present day. Of particular interest to families is a detailed timeline display of the Cold War which has proven of great help to those studying this period at school. Further exhibition rooms feature information on the “Special Operations/Rescue Squadrons” that were based at RAF Woodbridge, and also the “Aggressor” Squadron based at Bentwaters.

Outside are the aircraft exhibits where the RAF Harrier and Hunter can be seen, and are joined by the USAF A-10 Warthog which was a familiar sight in the skies over Suffolk when this iconic type operated from Bentwaters and Woodbridge. There is plenty of car parking space and the museum is suitable for all ages and has the added benefit of being an all weather visitor attraction.

Plans for 2019 will see airframes continue to undergo work to bring them up to museum standard and it is expected some will be completed by the end of the year. The café and shop continues to be a great success offering light refreshments and souvenirs and card payment facilities. Following on from the success of previous years, the open dates for 2019 have now been finalised and the museum will continue to open on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month and Bank Holiday Sundays & Mondays, from April until October.

Life at The Shelley Centre Hello dear friends, have you eaten too much chocolate over Easter? I find this very curious in my human helpers. However, the diligent Tuesday crew did a great fund raiser for us: an Easter Egg raffle. The whopping great chocolate egg, donated by Linden Lady Chocolates, was won by Scot Davy. Hope you enjoyed every bite of it Scot!

Babs and I have had a quiet three weeks’ break, listening to our live herd being groomed and exercised by the helpers who keep the centre going during the school holidays, not to mention the maintenance team that works at keeping the grass mown and the buildings in good repair. We hear them chatting to each other whilst they have a coffee break outside our door. Since they are all volunteers, not everyone can be there every week: they are always hoping to expand the pool of people who see to the maintenance of the Centre. Our chaps who come to mow the grass, do repairs and keep the place looking good are a very special bunch of volunteers, not usually connected with horses at all. So I should love to greet any person out there who could lend a hand on the land. I’m a really handsome, unusual and interesting horse to meet, not in the same league as a live pony of course but a real feat of computer science and engineering.

Talking of volunteers, it’s the turn of three of them to add to my list of 30 good reasons for coming here: 4) Elspeth: the lovely atmosphere and friendliness up here.

5) Jan who is one of our Coaches: the determination the riders show to achieve the best they can, which brings out their glorious smiles, and makes Shelley a happy place for all.

6) Cherry: being part of a really good team. And Jan’s cake!

Our volunteers have been receiving training as part of the on going search for excellence here, my photo shows two of the groups watching Lyn demonstrate correct handling of the ponies to encourage their good behaviour and a forward movement. You won’t catch me needing to be led correctly, my buttons let me change pace quickly and willingly to give my riders the best physiotherapy I can.

The month of May means The Hadleigh Show cometh! Don’t miss the best agricultural show in Suffolk on Saturday 18th May and please come to The Shelley Centre’s huge marquee where we shall be selling plants and masses and masses of home-made cakes. Rock on all you cooks, keep baking!

Hadleigh Art Club Activities The club continues to meet every Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Seminar Room at Hadleigh Library. New members are always welcome. The programme mapped out for May is as follows. On May 7th the afternoon will be occupied by a “Quick portrait session” which entails members of the club sitting for twenty minutes or so while the remainder execute a quick portrait.

May 14th Draw amphibians! After sketching club members last week, this week is devoted to frogs, toads, newts and salamanders. Better bring photographic references rather than having live amphibians hopping around the library. May 21st Village pumps or other old water pumps. Again bring references, or if the weather permits there is a splendid pump outside the Town Hall. May 28th A town or city skyline. Either working from references or create your own… and include a splash of colour. A staggering sunset perhaps.

As a self-directed programme it is very useful for anyone experiencing stress, anxiety and/or low mood and gives instant access to practical help for managing mood. Contented Dementia?

When people hear the word ‘dementia’ the chances are that they are aware of the widespread prevalence of the condition and the challenges families face once a diagnosis has been made. There is much general advice available, largely around doing one’s best to keep normal life going until this is no longer possible, on the basis that there appears to be no known way of warding off the gradual erosion of personality and quality of life for the person with dementia. And yet it doesn’t have to be like this. The Contented Dementia Trust, which incorporates the SPECAL method, has a very different take on dementia. Even the name of this small but increasingly influential charity beams out a positive message, and its work offers an entirely new way of approaching everything to do with the subject of dementia.

The Contented Dementia Trust takes as its starting point that once dementia has been diagnosed, the condition is best understood as a disability, not a terminal disease. A disability which is characterised by the random, intermittent and increasingly frequent failure to store new facts, whilst continuing to store feelings in the normal way.

This is just a single change in the normal memory system, a lost limb, as it were, but it has the potential to change almost everything else unless those of us without dementia learn to adapt our own actions and reactions to take account of that change in the other person. Once dementia is understood in this way, it becomes a condition that can be remarkably successfully managed on a lifelong basis.

The key to success lies in a simple yet far-reaching way of understanding how our normal memory works, what happens to all of us as we age, and the single dramatic change which occurs with the onset of dementia. Once we have really grasped the experience of the person with dementia, it becomes obvious that common sense is not useful. Something else is needed – SPECAL sense.

This presentation provides a fascinating overview of the SPECAL method and a powerful insight into the remarkable difference that SPECAL sense can make in highly practical ways, transforming the dementia journey for everyone involved. The method works with the disability of dementia, rather than ignoring or fighting it and opens the door to sustainable well-being, 24 hours a day, every day for life. In a word, SPECAL works!

Penny Garner, the founder and clinical director of the Contented Dementia Trust, was first introduced to dementia by her mother, who developed Alzheimer’s in her sixties and died at the age of 74. For almost thirty years Penny and her small team have been working at Burford, first with the NHS and now as an independent charity, and have refined what is now a fully integrated, practical and cost effective management method.

The SPECAL method was initially developed entirely out of practice, with the theoretical underpinning following at a later date. In 2007 Penny collaborated with the best selling author and clinical psychologist Dr. Oliver James in the publication of a book, ‘Contented Dementia’ (Copies of the book are available from Amazon or direct from the Trust), about the SPECAL method, and a scientific evaluation is now being carried out by King’ s College London. Most of our Junior Teams have come to the end of their Winter League Season in the Colchester League, Congratulations to Celestial Rockets (school years 5,6,7) who played in the year 7 division and finished 4th, a great achievement as most players had not played netball prior to this season, Well done to Cosmic Rockets (year 7/8) who played in the year 8 division for finishing 7th, this team improved so much during the season, Apollo Rockets (year 7/8) played in the year 8 division and finished with a fantastic result of 2nd place, and a massive well done to Saturn Rockets (year 8) who played in the year 9 division for finishing 1st place with only losing 1 game all season by 1 goal a new team who were not fazed by playing older teams and kept their cool at all times.

Galaxy Rockets our year 9/10 team still have 2 games left but are currently sitting in 4th place of the year 11 division.

Our two Adult Teams have 1 game left in division 5 of the Adult Colchester League, this game is a Rockets V Rockets match a great way to end their first season!

On April 3rd the club held its annual fundraising event 'Silly Socks' to raise money for Autism Anglia, our training was filled by players and coaches wearing their most outrageous and funny socks, the club raised £61 for the charity which supports children and adults with Autism Spectrum Condition, and their families in East Anglia.

Our Walking Netball continues every fortnight at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre Saturday Mornings 910.30am, this is such a fun and welcoming session for over 16yrs, females and males, the session also provides refreshments and cake at the end. Our next sessions are 4th May, 18th May, 1st June, 15th June and 29th June. Stoke by Nayland Seniors On Monday 1st April Stoke by Nayland took on Stock Brook Manor in the first round of this year’s John Day Trophy competition. This county team competition is competed for by golfers with handicaps between 13 and 28, 9 in a team playing singles match play.

A very tight game ensued with both teams off similar handicaps. After 9 holes the match was level with both teams up in four and level in one.

However the home team piled on the pressure on the second nine and came home with a 5 ½ to 3 ½ victory. The whole match was played in a very good spirit with excellent wins going to Dick Lumsden 7 & 5, Bob Filer 6 & 5 and Tony Denmead 6 & 5. Our next opponents are Stapleford Abbotts, with the match to be played before the May 10th.

Fidelis Activity News Jason Kermeen’s collection of mechanical entertainers is mind blowing. It ranges from early, fairly plain, weighty musical chests to sophisticated, highly decorated delicate Fabergé eggs. Members were fortunate to not only hear about their provenance but also to handle them and listen to their tunes. The eggs were exquisite. Apart from their sumptuous outside embellishment each had its own unique delicate feature inside e.g. a minute chess board with gold pieces and mini tweezers for the players, a gold swan with a diamond necklace concealed in its wings. A very special evening in the company of an enthusiastic expert and his eclectic collection. JD

Hadleigh Hares Spring is just about here, and that means marathon season. With London to come later in the month, two Hares have already taken on the iconic 26.2 mile distance. First up was Paul Ballard who broke the magic four hour barrier at Manchester, running 3 hours, 56 minutes. The following week, Dean Wright scored a new personal best time of 3 hours 25 minutes at Brighton. Well done to both of them, and good luck to those yet to run.

Marathon running takes a lot of training and March’s Colchester Half Marathon is used by many as a ‘tester’ to see how they are progressing. This year’s event saw eight Hares toe the line at the Community Stadium on 24th March. First to return after the 13.1 mile route was Scott Ramsey in stunning form as usual, in a time of just 72 minutes. John and Scott celebrate Aden Bell was second Hare at 1 hour 25 with their PBs at Bromley 10k Simon Fenn third in at 1hour 33. Karl Fagen wasn’t far behind at 1 hour 39, followed by Steve Hunt, Kitty Rigby, Tim Ryder and Zara Davis. Finally, Scott showed his current form again at the Bromley 10k coming second overall with a new personal best time of 32 minutes, 49 seconds. Another great run from him, but not to be outdone, the legendary John Scaife also managed a new personal best coming home in fourteenth place just two minutes later on 34:49. Also running strongly, Laura Shewbridge finished 4th female in 38:21, and Alison Hoskins completed the Hares contingent with a solid performance of her own.
