Tree for Life scheme welcomes new applications A Tree for Life scheme in Babergh and Mid Suffolk which offers a free tree for new parents, is open for 2021 applications. The scheme is open to all families in the districts who have or are welcoming a new arrival between 1 January and 31 December 2021. Parents who may have lost a child during the same period are also able to apply for a remembrance tree.

The initiative offers parents with a new born or newly adopted child the chance to mark their arrival by planting a tree. It aims to benefit families, communities and the environment by boosting tree coverage across the district.

So far the councils have given out over a thousand trees through Tree for Life, with 2020 applicants collecting their trees last month following a necessary delay to allow the council to prioritise essential services during the pandemic.

Expert help is always on hand on collection to advise families on their tree choice and aftercare at home.

Also open to those without a garden, a selection of the trees continue to be planted at key locations in the districts including Needham Lake, Shotley Golden Wood, Broom Hill in Hadleigh, Gallowsfield Wood in Haughley and Sproughton Millennium Green. Over 100 families have already applied to the 2021 scheme, but the councils are encouraging even more people to apply for their tree on the councils' website before the 10 January 2022 deadline.

Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for climate change, biodiversity and sustainable transport, said: “I’m proud that our Tree for Life scheme in Babergh continues to blossom. It provides a unique opportunity to benefit our environment and support county-wide climate ambitions, while also giving families a reason to spend time in the garden planting and nurturing their tree for the years to come. I would encourage as many people as possible to claim their free tree.”

The trees must be planted within the two districts and eligible applicants will be invited to choose and collect their tree in early 2022.

Driving Home for Christmas The Christmas Present Trust is going full steam ahead to provide a traditional meal (or dietary equivalent) to anybody who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family or friends on Christmas Day. Last year we were unable to hold the event in the Ansell Centre as normal and therefore delivered 90+ meals around Hadleigh. This year we are holding the event AND delivering meals – and we need volunteers to do so.

We need help setting up the Ansell Centre on Christmas Eve (and peeling the vegetables!), help providing lifts to guests who cannot get to the Centre on their own, help in the kitchen on Christmas Day, help delivering meals to those who are still not comfortable joining in a big indoor event and, most importantly, help talking with our guests and making the whole event go with a bang.

Earlier this year, I wrote about my challenge to run and walk 2021 miles by the end of 2021. My aim was to raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal during this, their Centenary Year. I am now pleased to announce that my challenge has been completed. ran my last mile on the 11th of November, finishing at the Hadleigh Royal British Legion.

I aimed to finish on Armistice Day as this would provide a fitting end to my challenge. Although I managed to avoid illness and injury, it did mean that I had to put in an extra effort during the few weeks leading up to this date. This paid off and I managed to complete my last mile in time to make the 2 minute silence held in Hadleigh High Street.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported my challenge by making a donation. To date, with your help, we have managed to raise a total of £690.28p.

Gift Aid raises this to £819.53p. With so many charities needing support, and with the pandemic potentially creating difficulties for some, this is a fantastic amount.

Plans to introduce new tariffs, including an hour’s free parking, in Babergh car parks from January next year, have been postponed.

This week, Babergh’s new cabinet member for environment Cllr Dr Siân Dawson, Hadleigh North has taken the decision to postpone the implementation of the new tariffs indefinitely, focusing instead on supporting businesses and the recovery of the district’s high streets.

The changes agreed by Babergh’s cabinet earlier this year, were due to begin in January next year, to allow the council as much time as possible to work with the high street to find the best solution for everyone, and avoid unnecessary uncertainty during the Christmas season.

However, the Conservatives decided to further postpone the implementation date, recognizing that while evidence suggests gradual business recovery across the district since Government restrictions were lifted, supporting the local economy and encouraging residents back to the high streets must now take priority.

Cllr Dawson said “The Conservatives have continued to listen to our residents, parish and town councils, businesses and others, and understand free parking in our towns is an emotive subject for many. “I recommended to Cllr John Ward to make the decision to postpone the implementation of the new tariffs indefinitely, while we continue to prioritise supporting our businesses and welcoming people back to our high streets.

“Parking, of course, remains a very careful balancing act, between the immediate needs and visions for our towns, those of the whole district, and our environment.

“I am hopeful we can be financially creative over coming months to finance the loss of subsidising our car parks, and continue to help our towns to thrive.”

A new implementation date, or any changes to the agreed tariffs, are now unlikely to be confirmed until 2023 at the earliest.

Improvements due to be funded by car park income, such as signage, resurfacing and access improvement works, active travel improvements, and extended resident parking permit schemes, are also expected to be delayed.

In the meantime, the council are developing a joint parking strategy – setting out a blueprint for the next 5-10 years. It will take on board feedback received during the councils’ recent consultation, while also looking at capacity and other needs across Babergh.

All our children have settled back in to near normal school life well especially our reception children. We have once again been able to have lunch together and our year groups 3 to 6 have been able to share learning and PE activities.

Our first half term saw the introduction of drama sessions on a Thursday afternoon from Act First drama which compliments our timetable of music with Simon Welham and PE with Mrs Bartholomew.

We enjoyed our first walk to St Margaret’s Church on 7th October to attend Harvest Festival since lockdown, we would like to express our thanks for all the contributions of food items that were donated and to those parents who were able to join us for the service.

In addition to Harvest Festival Mrs Myers and two of our pupils attended the Celebration of Church Schools at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral. Our school was one of many that was represented at the evening service and it was truly wonderful to be part of this event once again.

Our new fencing around the school is starting to take shape we are really pleased with how it blends in with the natural surroundings and the view that can be seen when we are outside for PE and outdoor learning. Not to mention the peace of mind it now gives in terms of safeguarding.

On Wednesday 29th September we were able to hold an open morning for prospective parents and pupils, we were overwhelmed by the response and would like to thank those who showed an interest. We hope to be welcoming them in September.

Thank you to all those that attended the Craft Fair on Sunday 10th October at Whatfield Village Hall, the hall was filled with many stalls and the event was well attended. We would like to express our sincere thanks from all the pupils and staff at the school to Mandy Squirrell for the very kind donation of £780 to the school, the additional funds are very much appreciated and will be put to very good use.

Our year 5/6 children have been learning about electricity. The class overcome some very trick circuitry challenges to create some outstanding steady hand games. Each one was designed with a specific person in mind and followed a pre-planned criteria. It has been a full term project with some real world learning. Well done Oak class!

Our children made a poppy wreath for Remembrance Sunday which was present and displayed at St Margaret’s Church Whatfield. Our School service remembered and paid tribute to those who have lost their lives in conflict.

It feels like everything is getting more and more expensive and with Christmas coming up, I'm really worried about how I'll manage. My partner and I would love to treat our kids, but we’re keen to avoid huge debts. Do you have any advice?

Christmas can be costly for many of us, and we know lots of people are struggling already this year. There can be a lot of pressure to spend more than you can afford, so here are a few key things to remember as we head into 2022.

Be realistic and budget accordingly. Work out how much you can afford to spend – and stick to it. There’s nothing wrong with managing expectations, and suggesting things such as spending limits, secret Santa or maybe even that you don’t need to swap gifts.

Don’t forget the everyday bills. Remember that the rent or mortgage, utility bills, food bills and other existing debts still have to be paid – the consequences can be severe if they’re not. Even though it’s Christmas, it’s not worth starting the New Year being behind on your bills.

Tempted by Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL)? While it can be tempting to split payments, make sure you have a plan for how to pay the money back - particularly if your circumstances or income were to change. If you're using BNPL repeatedly or using multiple BNPL options, make sure you know how much you owe in total.

Make sure you understand what you’re signing up for, how you’ll make the repayments and what will happen if you can’t pay on time. Buy safe to be safe.

Whatever the deal, whatever the temptation, don’t buy from unauthorised traders and don’t borrow from unauthorised lenders. These could put you at risk of unscrupulous collection methods – including threats and harm, unsafe products and unexpectedly high interest rates. You may also not be protected by Financial Conduct Authority rules. Shop around. Try as many different places as possible to find the best price. Buy what you want and not what other people say you need.

Be wary of extended warranties; the cost of a repair could be less than the cost of the warranty. Get help if you’re struggling. If you’re worried about paying the bills, get free, independent advice as soon as possible. Hadleigh Sea Scout Group In October the Hadleigh Sea Scout Group held a special event to mark the establishment of the 1st Hadleigh Scout Group in 1921 and celebrate 100 years of continuous scouting in Hadleigh as a result.

Members and friends of Scouting, both past and present, attended an open day and viewed an exhibition of scouting through the ages as well as our plans for the future.

We were able to meet with former members from as long ago as the late 1950's, and reminisce over photographs and newspaper cuttings covering events over the past 70 years, including a leaders wedding, a scout trip to Kenya, and the construction of our headquarters. Many old acqaintences were renewed over tea and cake and new memories made for the future.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As ever, it has been a particularly busy time in Westminster. On the one hand, I’ve been getting used to life as a Minister, and on the other, keeping up the pressure on my constituency priorities in South Suffolk. In many ways, the common factor has been the great joy of being out and about again, enjoying the freedom resulting ultimately from our brilliant vaccine program.

In Ministerial terms, as I have responsibility for sentencing policy and criminal law, ‘out and about’ has generally meant visiting Crown and Magistrates’ Courts around the country – including Manchester, Birmingham, Snaresbrook and the Old Bailey.

Of course, the backlog of cases is a huge issue but it’s not until you visit Crown Courts in person that you appreciate why social distancing rules have made it so much harder to keep justice moving. To emphasise this point, I also recently visited Loughborough where we have just opened a new ‘super courtroom’ designed to try cases with up to 12 defendants, precisely the type of very serious (and often gang related) case that has been most challenging in the pandemic.

Inevitably the most enjoyable part of properly getting ‘out and about’ again as an MP has been in terms of South Suffolk itself. It has been fantastic to be able to once again fully pack my constituency days with visits to schools, businesses, and local organisations. It was also an honour to lay a wreath at Sudbury’s Remembrance Sunday service, following last year’s suspension of the full-blown ceremony.

As I said, public events such as these are only possible because of the brilliant Covid vaccine rollout here in South Suffolk. As we head into winter, it is imperative that all those who are eligible - i.e. the over-40’s or those who are vulnerable book in for their booster jab. As soon as 5-months since your second vaccination have elapsed, you will be able to book your booster injection.

I wish all of my constituents a very enjoyable festive period with their friends and families, and I look forward to seeing more of you in 2022!

We’re feeling festive at Yarnworx!

As Christmas is almost here, we have been getting rather festive here in the shop.

Our Christmas tree is up and we have put together lots of gifts for the knitter or crocheter in your life! We also have a wonderful range of locally produced candles and candle gift sets. These come in a host of different winter fragrances and are simply divine. Our Christmas Eve boxes have proven ever popular and we still have some left so grab yours before sell out.

Thinking ahead to the new year, we have been busy working with our tutor Emma to devise the new classes and courses which will start in January. Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Our New Reading Bench Finding a quiet spot on our new bench for some reading with friends and making sandwiches using instructions! Yummy!

North, East, South and West Robin Class can give directions using north, east, south and west.

They made routes on the playground giving directions for their friends to follow. They also practised using compasses.

Remembrance Sunday Our KS2 children produced poems of remembrance and used some of them to create a wreath that was laid at the war memorial in the market square on Sunday.

U11 Football Pupils from KS2 enjoyed a Football event at Whitton Sports Centre where they came a respectable fourth place amidst teams from across Suffolk.

A fair play award was given to one of our players! Well done all!

Tuesday Teacher Led Club Children building bridges to span a river in construction club with Mrs Simmons. The children are really enjoying these sessions which range from Lego building, Multi-Cultural activities and food tasting to Creative Writing.

The Writing of ‘Whatfield; A Suffolk village across time’ My wife and I arrived in the village of Whatfield with a concerned cat, a car full of our most valued stuff, and a large removals lorry, on a damp evening in November 2014. We had bought Grubbs Edge, a lovely house in the ancient village.

Everything was dark; where were the street lights? We had moved from Bexleyheath, in south London, which had rather a lot of lights, and a very large number of houses. The contrast would become clearer each day.

We had been history teachers, and retirement to a rural village seemed attractive. A quieter pace of life, fresh air and lots of fields and trees had a great appeal. The previous house owner, Marion, had left me Simon Dewes’ book ‘A Suffolk Childhood’, about the local area a century ago. After unpacking, some basic decorating and the organising and placing of the over 2000 books I have collected over decades, I read Simon’s book. I began walking around the village attempting to imagine what it would have been like 100 years ago. I found myself examining each old cottage, studying the Victorian school building, visiting the medieval church, and looking at old maps showing the local farms. I was hooked. I had moved to a place richer in history than I had ever experienced living in the suburbs, and some of it was still partly visible.

The warmth of our welcome to the village encouraged me to seek out villagers who had lived much, or all, of their lives here. I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing a wide range of characters, recording their voices for posterity and writing down their memories of growing up in a village which had changed enormously during the 20th century.

I discovered that another ‘newcomer’ from a previous generation, Joy Wellings, had spent a huge amount of time researching the history of the village, and with the help of Joy Green, the village History Recorder, I was able to carefully examine her findings and then develop her work further. I realised that a book was the only way of drawing the information together. Many villagers contributed pictures, documents, photos, letters and sound advice. After three years collecting, comparing and sorting literally thousands of sources which I scanned and recorded, I began the process of drawing the whole thing together. It would take another 2 years to complete the various chapters, whilst additional material kept appearing!

The final book would be more detailed than I had envisaged at the start, partly because I wanted to include many of the wonderful sources for future generations to see. The book examines how the village probably evolved from ancient times, with sections covering the main historic buildings and institutions. It looks at change, especially the sudden move away from being a traditional farming community during the 20th century and the implications of that, which apply to so many villages in Suffolk. The most important parts of the story come from the memories of villagers, and over one third of the book is dedicated to their witness accounts.

It is a privilege to live in Whatfield and to feel the echoes of an ancient community still present. We can learn more than we think from listening to those who were here before us.

A class reader, from the classic novel through to a new release, is chosen and read in each class each half term to further build on the children's exposure to the stimulating and varied world of literature available to them. These texts are chosen by both the classes and teachers and shared at the end of the school day in the traditional story time manner.

Helping those who cannot help themselves It was something author Frank Payne had often thought of doing. But could never find the time. At the age of 87 and now with time on his hands, it was now or never.

So he set out to write his first book. He has now completed and published two, with the third well on its way.

The first, ‘Here Today "Goon" Tomorrow’ was published in July. The second, ‘Well Worth Waiting For’ is due to be published this month. Together they chronicle the story of Frank's life. The third, ‘It All Kicks Off On Sunday’ is of his forty years spent as a boys football team manager and coach and qualified referee. It will be finished

by Christmas and recounts his continuous 40 year battles with adult and junior players, their managers, supporters and parents. Hence the title ‘It All Kicks Off On Sunday’.

Frank was born in South East London on April 21 1934, his father died at age 24, he survived the Blitz, narrowly missing a stray German bomb which destroyed the house he, his sister and mother had minutes earlier left, to go to the outdoor shelter. Married in 1958 he, his wife and three children shared a great love of animals, especially dogs. Today the total is fiftee, each remaining with them for the whole of their canine lives. If you add to them the other dogs rescued by others of his family, the number to date is twenty three.

That is why Frank, whose male voice choir has sung twice at the Albert Hall in 2014 and 2016, is donating every pound each of his books earn through sales, to SeSaw, a small animal rescue and rehoming charity in Leavenheath, Suffolk.

They, like all small charities have suffered severe financial losses due to the Pandemic, but still they battle on.

Said Frank “Their needs are far greater than mine, my wife, daughter and grandchildren all physically help with SeSaw's animal welfare. At 87, my time is running out, I've fought battles with Prostate Cancer, Bladder Cancer and now the last vestige of Skin Cancer. I pray each of my books do well. That I'm given time to finish ‘It All Kicks Off On Sunday’.

Frank has spoken to his publisher who have agreed he can reduce the price of both books to £5.00 each for readers. Accepting two good reads are better than one, the price will be £10.00 (at £10.99 each, the Publishers retail price is £21.98).

New iPad lending scheme to help residents get online Suffolk Libraries and Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are joining forces to help residents get online with a new iPad lending scheme – supporting those who need a little extra help to access services in an increasingly digital world.

26 new iPads, all with 4G internet connectivity and a range of pre-installed applications and web links, will be available for free to anyone in the two districts to borrow. They will be based at Stowmarket, Hadleigh, Sudbury and Needham Market libraries. The pilot, which will last for a year, has been made possible thanks to funding from the NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group, with additional support from the councils. It aims to help reduce the level of digital isolation in the districts and enable residents to access and navigate the internet when they need.

Anyone wishing to borrow one simply needs to have a Suffolk Libraries account and sign up to the user agreement. The iPads can be borrowed for up to three weeks, and as they already have inbuilt mobile internet, residents can get online even if they don’t have an internet connection at home.

Bruce Leeke, Chief Executive of Suffolk Libraries, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Babergh and Mid Suffolk to help more people in the area get online.

“It can be tough to get by if you’ve not got some way of connecting to the internet to perform tasks like job-seeking, applying for benefits or staying in touch with friends and family, particularly in rural areas.

“We know people will need even more help after the pandemic and this is one example of how Suffolk Libraries can help by working with other organisations to develop innovative new services.”

The scheme will form part of the councils’ digital support programme over the coming year - helping to improve skills and reduce digital isolation across the two districts. It also further builds on the iPad and laptop loaning services already available in several other Suffolk libraries.

Welcome to our new team member Annabel Park has recently joined Dunstone Optometry as an Optical Assistant, after six years in a similar role in Bury St Edmunds. She works as part of our team to assist in the provision and delivery of high standard Optometry services to patients.

In particular, by providing all front of house services to a high level. Her roles are numerous and include clinic coordination, ordering spectacles and contact lenses, assisting with spectacle dispensing, visual fields screening, eye pressure measurement and retinal photography and scanning. Kersey School Open Days Kersey is about to hold Open Days for any prospective parents interested in the school organised by the Tilian Partnership, which Kersey joined at the beginning of November. The eight schools in the Tilian network are all small church primaries, and the Partnership is run by people who believe passionately in the unique advantages of such schools for giving children the very best start in life and education. As Kersey’s Headteacher Claire Dunnell Paley puts it, “There is so much we can draw on in this school’s idyllic setting, which we can use to make the curriculum feel real and vibrant to our children.” Therefore in the last month the children have marked the start of new literacy topics by making and launching paper boats in Kersey splash, going on a bird walk, and enjoying activities such as a Handbell-ringing club (“The Kersey Clangers”), weekly music lessons, and a visit by singers from Snape Maltings. They have taken part in a packed Harvest Festival Service in Kersey Church and marked Remembrance Day with a live performance of the Last Post. Next up of course – Christmas, with a green-screen filming day, and a Nativity planned with real animals!

For Claire, the school’s small size gives another key opportunity – the capacity to get to know everybody really well. With the help of Tilian’s Chief Improvement Officer Louise Clark, she’s drawing up an individual learning plan for each one of Kersey’s children as well as stepping up feedback with parents, in order that they can know exactly how they can best help progress their children’s learning.

We have an Open Afternoon on Monday December 06 (1330-1530). The Headteacher, Governors, and senior Tilian leaders will be available to answer any questions and outline their vision for the future.

But for anyone who misses that date, Claire has a simple message, “Don’t worry – but do feel free to call the school and arrange another time to come and see what we have to offer!”

Chelsworth Christmas Fair is back after an enforced break in 2020 due to the pandemic Although Chelsworth is a very small village the whole community pulls together to create a wonderfully festive Christmas Fair with almost every household contributing in some way. This is a traditional, rural event, held in the beautiful, medieval, All Saints Church which will be decorated for Christmas to add to the seasonal atmosphere Chelsworth is often said to be one the prettiest villages in Suffolk and because the Church has no direct access from a road, visitors to the Fair will have a chance to admire some of the ancient buildings as they walk the short distance from the car park on a nearby farm.

Around 20 stalls will be selling gifts, crafts and foods. Light refreshments will be available and there will be plenty of mince pies and mulled wine and as an extra treat, musical entertainment at various times during the day.

Over the past two years, an exciting programme of work, has taken place in the Church to provide better lighting, heating a, toilet and kitchen as well as rebuilding the organ which is now sited in a newly created gallery. Many grants from local and national bodies contributed to the cost of this work, but the profits from previous Christmas Fairs also played their part. The Church is now able to be used for many community events as well as for worship. This will be the first major public event in the newly refurbished Church; an extra cause for celebration.

The Fair will be on Saturday 4th December from 11am to 4pm.

The Church is in the centre of Chelsworth, close to the B1115.

Entry for adults is £3 and Children are free.

The month started with a beginners class; we enjoyed arranging with aluminium wire, creating a vertical design and an inverted crescent.

At our meeting on 9th November, we hosted speaker Mr Charles Willett from Witham who gave us all a very interesting talk on his family Nursery, its growth through the years and plans for the future. He made it very interesting, ably assisted by his sister Lorna from the audience. Charles impressed us all by the hard work involved and by the fact that he only buys English shrubs and plants.

The meeting closed with a presentation to Nancy, the competition winner for her delightful arrangement of flowers in a teacup. The photo shows some of the entries including Nancy’s.

At our next meeting on 14th December, we welcome Alan Smith for a demonstration entitled ‘It’s Christmas Again’. Please join us at Hadleigh United Reformed Church, Market Square. The meeting starts at 7.30. All welcome.

Lavenham Parish Council News Lorry Route Traffic Review -- Suffolk County Council are conducting a limited review of lorry traffic throughout the County. Full details can be found on line at https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/lorry-management/lorry-routeplan-review-in-suffolk/ The Parish Council have been asked for their views and although this is not a full consultation, we would like to hear from residents and businesses by Friday 10th December 2021. You can let us know what you know think about lorry traffic using the A1141 and B1071 and the effect this has on the village. You can write a brief message and post it into the new mailbox located on the side of the public toilet block in Church Street or send us an email to lpclorry@gmail.com.

Prentice Street Car Park Update: The mains power supply has been successfully installed following the road closure. We are now waiting for the installation of the electricity meters, and the access ramp before the toilets can be opened. You may also have noticed 6 Electric Vehicle Charging Points have now been installed.

These are not yet operational. We had originally planned for 2 EV points, with future capability for 4 more. However we were offered a grant to have the 4 additional EV points installed by Plug-In-Suffolk, a Suffolk County Council funded scheme, at no cost to the Parish Council. We will keep you updated on the progress.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) Since January until the time of going to print, the Practice has administered a total of 26,500 Covid vaccines to the local community, including some patients from the Bildeston Practice.

They have also given 4,300 ‘flu jabs. This is a remarkable achievement for a small country town Practice. The PPG and many others have provided volunteer support at all the sessions in the Practice and at St Mary’s Church.

Sincere thanks to everyone involved in this massive vaccine programme. Their dedication, time and effort has been much appreciated. Also, our thanks to patients who have kindly provided delicious refreshments at our jab sessions or taken the time to express their personal gratitude for the service given.

Avoid waiting and free up the Practice telephone for others

Hadleigh Garden Club Our original November speaker was unavailable, so at short notice we were delighted to welcome Anne Tweddle from Plant Heritage to talk about “Understanding Pruning”. She guided us through caring for roses, shrubs and fruit trees. Then turned her attention to sharpening members secateurs….most of us are guilty of failing to keep our blades sharp . I certainly left the meeting eager to cast an eye over my garden and decide what needs pruning now or leaving till next year.

There were a couple of overnight frosts in early November that resulted in the Dahlia tops being severely blackened on the allotment; the ones in my garden have so far escaped damage.

Numerous ornamental leaved Pelargoniums grown in pots had luckily been put in the greenhouse so were not affected as the electric heater keeps it frost free. I had taken this opportunity to take several dozen cuttings for next year.

I do not dig up the Dahlias on the allotment but leave them in the ground to overwinter. The blackened top is cut down close to the ground and left as mulch.

They have survived this method for many years.

Some plants like Brussel sprouts, Parsnip, Chard, onion sets and garlic, especially Broad beans don’t seem to be affected by frost and even winter flowering Pansies will bounce back after the heaviest frost.

If the weather stays dry it should be possible to give the lawn a light cut with mower blades set high. Don’t forget to keep the bird feeders and water topped up.

December 13th sees our fun quiz; a relaxed social event. The committee are providing individually boxed buffet accompanied by mulled wine or fruit juice during the interval. Do join us for this lighthearted evening at this festive time.

Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club Wow, what a great run for Martin Wheal. 4 wins in a row in the in-house competitions; joint winner in the mixed doubles, and the pairs, as well as one of the members of the lads who won the President's cup and then Singles champion to top it all off. Meanwhile, hopefully our new posters around the village and surrounding areas will bring us some more new members. Carpet Bowls is a mix of skill and luck. The bowls have a inbuilt bias, and do not need excessive strength to bowl them, in fact the bias works better when bowled slower. If you would like to give it a try, we play at Lavenham Village Hall on Wednesday 2pm until 4.30pm and Thursday7.30pm until 10pm. You may even be fortunate enough to have Martin show you how it is done, and you could be amongst next year's winners. Your first two sessions are free to see how you like Carpet Bowls. I’m so glad to report that my own riders and their carers are all back visiting me, and nobody has complained of the cold as we work with the door and a window wide open. Such troopers!

Outside the arena is covered in leaves, the horses are rugged up, and the volunteers are in natty bobble hats and an assortment of coats. I can watch all the activities from my open room.

Did you see the rainbows in November?

We had a beauty over Shelly and clever Yvette took this lovely photo, over Tilly’s head.

Our coloured pony, Snoopy, is beginning to do his RDA work at last. He has taken longer than most to settle but we welcome him onto the team. Lyn is still very careful about how he gets used. Like all the live herd here, horses and ponies have to adapt to little consistency in how they are handled. With up to 100 volunteers helping (not all at once!) there are bound to be differences in how they are groomed, tacked up and lead. It can make a chap nervous and twitchy, let me tell you.

I’m so excited that this year the Shelley Centre carol service will be entirely in house. None of the participants, ponies, visitors or helpers has to process to Shelly church because, much as everyone loves doing so, the church gets so crowded it would not be safe.

For the first time I shall be able to hear what goes on. We shall have the Serendipity choir to help everyone sing beautifully and the Silver Band will just finish the evening off nicely.

December 4th is the date, 4pm the start of the service.

You won’t be hearing from the Centre during the school holidays, so let me wish you a very happy Christmas from all the equine team, real or simulated.

French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, with the big day of festive joy fast approaching, Happy Christmas to you all.

French’s have had better support this year, with people stepping in to help us, it’s been lovely to see and shows there are locals out there that have a kind heart and want to do something to help their local charity. We still have several colleges sending their students to us and more Duke of Edinburgh awards teenagers and we have helped more people with depression and anxiety problems. So I am pleased with the busy and successful year we have had in 2021. Along the way French’s have found some great helpers and I hope that our solid team grows and more locals come on board with us, in the way of hands on help and financial help, because we need both, I emphasise, we really do need both, to keep us going now and for the future. So if you are reading this please try to do one or the other, as we need you.

Paul, Amy and Colin have been amazing in the way of helping with our animals feed, I would like to thank Chloe from the store as well. This group of people and the stores management have stuck by us for some years now and I cannot praise them enough for the various things they have helped French’s with.

Split bags that customers do not want to purchase come to us and with our reels of duck tape at hand, bags are sealed and our animals are fed, what more can I say, but Thank You Gladwells and Happy Christmas.

Sadly no one has stepped forward to help us get the ground ready for a portable wooden unit, which we have purchased for things like, our animal’s equipment and first aid. We have the wooden unit sitting there in the wrapping and desperately need hands on help with someone who knows what they are doing, to put it together for us, there is no concreting to do, as this is not a permanent structure. If we had the money to pay someone that would be great, but we do not, so we need someone’s kindness and good will. Please, please, call me if you can help in any way.

I would like to thank Charmaine for donating 3 of her painting to us for our quiz and Christmas raffle and I also give a thank you to a lovely elderly lady called Win, who lives in Hadleigh, Win called me to pick up a large wall picture of a horse that she bought many years ago from an artist. Win said she loved the painting, but said it was no use to her when she passes away and said we could sell it as her donation. I told Win hopefully she has many more years left in her, bless her dear heart.

Lavenham Pre-school: Review of the year December 2020- November 2021 What a year it has been! The first half of the year was affected by both bad weather and lockdowns but we are proud that the pre-school remained open through most of the Covid-19 disruption to support the learning and development of the village’s youngest residents.

When the strictest Covid-19 rules eased in the summer we welcomed parents to attend their children’s graduation, where we said goodbye and good luck to many of our children as they moved on to ‘big school’.

September brought some changes as we welcomed new children and a new manager into the setting. The first month was spent making sure that all the children had settled in and were happy to come to Pre-school. Then slowly we introduced some new activities, like visiting the Library and the Tot Rock group in the Village Hall. The children are so excited about taking part in these trips! We were also invited by the Rev. Graham Naylor to visit church to learn more about Harvest and see the Harvest Display. The children had the chance to explore a variety of fruits, vegetable, and plants.

October started with an Ofsted visit! This was our first full inspection since moving to our purpose-built setting in 2017 - and we are very excited and proud to say that we were awarded with a GOOD rating, reflecting much of what we already felt about the quality of our setting and our staff. There were some very encouraging comments and great feedback from the Inspector. Building on some of the recommendations we are already looking to strengthen our connections with Lavenham Community Primary School to help our children with the transition to primary school.

Our next very exciting project is to introduce a Forest School for the children in our care. Many thanks to Mr. David Jones and his team from the Woodland Project for helping us with preparing the site! During Forest School sessions children will have an opportunity to explore the natural environment, learn through play and improve their social, emotional, and physical skills. Forest School helps with building confidence, resilience, independence, and creative thinking. Children will have the chance to be adventurous and try their ideas in practice. But most important they will learn through play, getting muddy and messy, exploring with different textures, smells and all in harmony with nature!

Lavenham Pre-school is a charity run by Trustees who are all volunteers. Each year the charity holds an Annual General Meeting. This year the meeting will be held via Zoom, on Tuesday 14th December 2021. Unfortunately, some of our current Trustees will be standing down, therefore we are looking for new volunteers. We are particularly keen to recruit as trustees people with a financial background, and parents of children who attend the Pre-school.

Yes, H.A.D.S is back and what a show we have for you next year. We're bringing you The Wizard of Oz with a massive twist and I'm not talking just about the whirl of wind which lands Dorothy in a land far away from her beloved home and family.

The twists are...well you're have to come and see for yourselves!

Of course Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion are there, also a few extras.

We've been working hard in rehearsals learning lines, making costumes and props. It feels so good to be back doing what we do best, getting together enjoying ourselves and sometimes being serious actors! Written by our own members of who we are so proud of.

The shows are held in the usual half term week in February. The 24, 25th and two shows on Saturday the 26th. In our last blog in the Community News we stated that we've been lucky enough to have use of Elmsett Village Hall which we are so grateful as it has it's own stage and saves us a huge amount of money hiring stage and all the equipment. This is where the shows will be performed.

Old Buckenham Hall School, Year 7 have been studying life in the WW1 trenches of the Western Front. They have been exploring propaganda posters, diary extracts, poems, and photographic evidence. Pupils have been writing first person narratives and writing postcards home from the front line.

Here is Eugenie des Rotours story It was six o’clock when I was coming back from a long afternoon’s ride on my horse, Milly. It started to rain. I hurried when my hat blew away. I was going to chase after it when something caught my eye. It was a poster flapping in the wind.

It said, “There’s room for you. Enlist today.”

The word “you” was the biggest word.

Underneath that there was a picture with a scarlet steam train. It was packed with soldiers who all looked happy. There was probably only one space left on the train.

There was a man on the train pointing at me and another man only half on the platform beckoning to me. It made me feel special.

On the platform there was an old man waving. He was too old to go to war, but I was not. In the background, I could see steam; that meant the train was about to leave. I rushed back home.

I had to think of someone to look after Milly whilst I was gone.

About three weeks later, I was sitting there in the trenches thinking to myself, “Oh, I remember those happy days…”. War was not as fun as it seemed on the poster. The trenches were cramped and claustrophobic, rats were growing as big as cats. The ground was wet and muddy. There were sand bags in preparation for bombs and barbed wire to keep the enemy out. There were some people sleeping and others who were possibly dead. I could not tell the difference. I was writing a letter to my parents when I got told I had to go over the top to no man’s land to spy on the Germans with a soldier called Jim. I had never been over the top, but how bad could it be? I got to meet Jim before going into no man’s land. He seemed very nice. He told me about his three daughters, Maya who was four, Helena who was six and Beatrice who was eight.

At soon as it was dark, we were off. I dodged the barbed wire, going over and under. I would give anything to be back in England. We were crawling carefully on our stomachs. I felt like a snake. I looked around. I saw a German about to shoot.

He was aiming for Jim. In a split second I knew what I had to do. He had three daughters that needed him; no one had ever cared about me.

I took a deep breath and jumped in front of Jim. The last thing I saw was a blurred vision: Jim running away and disappearing into the safety of the trenches…

Well Phil’s version may differ a little from the story you know. The residents of Schaumbegraben are not happy! Roger the Ogre is taxing everyone for everything, so the Burgher and his Clerk decide to organise a music festival to cheer everyone up. What could possibly go wrong?

As in Sudbury Dramatic Society’s last pantomime, Sleeping Beauty in 2019, we are designating one performance as a Relaxed Performance, which proved successful last time, and which will be held on Sunday 2nd January at 11am.

A Relaxed Performance is aimed to be more accessible and non-threating to audience members and reduce stress and anxiety in a more open environment to enable them to enjoy the show. Lighting and sound levels will be adjusted, the house lights will remain, and all those loud bangs, flashes and pyrotechnics will be reduced or removed. A chill out space will also be available if the performance becomes overwhelming for anyone, including those small children who are terrified by the baddie and invariably end up bursting into tears!

Puss in Boots is on at The Quay Theatre from Sunday 26th December 2021 to Monday 3rd January 2022, with a relaxed performance on Sunday 2nd January 2022 at 11am.

Beaujolais Brunch at Stoke 75 members of Stoke-by-Nayland GC met for the annual Beaujolais “Brunch” Scramble. It’s been 2 years since this event was last held due to Covid. Teams are made up of 4 players and could be any combination.

4 drives from each team member must be used with 2 spare. It’s a medal round, less your team handicap therefore giving you a final nett score. The weather was kind to the players with overcast skies but no rain!

Top spot was taken by Diana Harris, Bob Tokely, Ian Smith & John Sandford. They shot a gross 70-15=55. 2nd place went to Guy Williamson, Katy Williamson, Karl Hepple & Rosie Mason with a gross 72-17=55 losing out ocb. 3rd place was Tim Dickens, Tracey Dickens, Ian Thompson & Bev Thompson with a gross 65-10=55. A brunch was provided after the round with a presentation to the winners.

On Saturday 30th October, Hadleigh United Community Programme U7s Minis attended their first 4v4 football festival at East Bergholt FC. The boys and girls took part in games against Holbrook, Framlingham Town, Kirton Kestrels, Felixstowe, Stow Falcons, Copleston and East Bergholt. The children had lots of fun, demonstrated their skills and showed lots of enthusiasm. We would like to thank Skar Mouldings for kindly sponsoring match kits for the community football programme.
