It’s Springtime, It’s Show Time!

Preparations for the 179th Hadleigh Show on Saturday 19th May are nearly complete and we hope you will join us for a great family day out at Holbecks Park. To mark the Royal wedding and the end of World War 1 the showground will have a ‘quintessentially British’ feel with red, white and blue bunting.

The Grand Ring will welcome Broke FMX with their motocross display team and Little Nippers Terrier Racing, whilst Titan the Robot will be touring the park – so do come and say hello. The Flower marquee will mark the end of WW1 with a theme of “Nostalgia and Memories” for the floral art exhibits whilst eh children will create poppies and doves to hang on a tree. Mark David from The Cooking Experience in Hadleigh, and his team of chefs will be cooking up a host of dishes throughout the day using local produce in our cookery marquee.

St Peter’s Church, Sudbury wins £275,500 grant from National Lottery

On Spring Bank Holiday Monday May 28th, local professional musician, Ian McMillan, will be putting the Foxearth Church Organ through it’s paces at 11am, for an hour of popular classic ‘Organ Fireworks’, including a world premiere performance of Mr Mac’s Maggots – two recently composed organ pieces by John Rutter for Ian’s ‘significant’ birthday.

Ian has chosen a programme of contrasts to compliment the Premiere, & show the highly regarded & recently restored Foxearth Organ to the full. Opening with JS Bach’s awe inspiring Toccata & Fugue in d minor (widely known from Walt Disney’s film Fantasia), the programme also has music by Franck, Yon, Sullivan & Howells.

World Premiere Performance of Organ Music by John Rutter

The Churches Conservation Trust (CCT), the national heritage charity protecting historic churches at risk, has today received a National Lottery grant of £275,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to transform St Peter’s in Sudbury into an exciting new cultural and community centre.

Made possible by money raised

by National Lottery players, the grant is the first stage of an ambitious £2.8 million project to repair and adapt the Grade I listed building in the centre of Sudbury into a multi-use centre for community events, music, arts and performance. The initial £275,000 development award* will enable an expanded community and cultural activity programme to be held at St. Peter’s over the next 18 months and the development of designs to adapt the building, to include a state–of-the-art gallery, installation of toilets and updated kitchen facilities. A Development Officer will be appointed to support the work.

St Peter’s sits at the heart of Sudbury, overlooking the town’s bustling market place. The building currently hosts a series of music concerts, live performances and community events run by the Friends of St Peter’s and is home to the Bridge Project Café.

Commenting on the award, Peter Aiers, CEO of The Churches Conservation Trust, said: “We’re thrilled to have received support from the National Lottery for the first stage of this ambitious project to transform St Peter’s into a firstclass cultural centre, a project that will revolutionise opportunities for people to take part in and experience the arts in Sudbury. We’d like to extend huge thanks to HLF and National Lottery players for this award and to express our gratitude to the Friends of St Peter’s and all those who have helped fund and support this project to date.”

In order to release the HLF award, the Friends of St Peter’s (FoSP) are making an initial contribution of over £33,000. Explaining the importance of the HLF support, Oliver Forder, the Chair of FoSP, said: “We are incredibly excited about the HLF award and the CCT support. St. Peter’s is already an architectural gem, and we now have the opportunity to turn this beautiful ancient building into a cultural and community centre fit for Sudbury in the 21st century.”

Kids Ran the Railway‌!

Saturday 14th April saw the very first Kids Run the Railway activity day of 2018 at the East Anglian Railway Museum off to a flying start.

Designed to appeal to children of 5yrs and over, under supervision from the museum’s experienced volunteers, the youngsters got a chance to fulfil three important ‘duties’ on the railway: signalman, guard and crossing keeper and they all had a ride in the cab of the locomotive. ‘It’s like a mini-version of our Railway Experience Days, but for kids’, says Marketing Manager, Catherine Harrison, ‘it’s really caught people’s imagination and places are booking up fast’. The kids had a great day and all filled out feedback forms describing it as a ‘great, hands-on experience’, and, apparently, ‘Archie can’t wait until he’s old enough to work on a railway!’‌. job done. The next available dates for Kids Run the Railway are 21st July and 18th August.

A Street of Secrets Set in the East End of London, Angel Street is home to a variety of characters, who live close together, sharing each other's joys, tears and lives. Ethel's collision with Stan's bicycle raises eyebrows. Why do Stan's solicitors insist on involving the rent collector, in his affairs? Then there is Rose, who appears to be teaching the vicar some of her old ways. When Churchy and Liz decide to investigate, they find more than they bargained for. The next vicar comes as another shock. Meanwhile young Tony is unwittingly apprenticed to burglars, causing problems for one or two other local residents.

The new neighbour is a real eye-opener, and what about the mystery lady who stands watching on the corner?

She says: “I wrote this book in the timespan of my childhood because it was such an interesting time. I have created fictional characters which made these streets safe for me and my friends and they were thought of as extended family. Those streets hadn’t escaped the bombs and the problems of rationing were still being tackled, but the attitude always stayed in my memory. Those people you can’t forget.�

Margaret Moore was born in the East End of London during the war years.

Leaving school at the age of 15 with no qualifications she took further education to achieve the skills of a secretary during this career spanning 37 years, she worked as a legal secretary in London, Essex and Suffolk, retiring in 2006. She began her writing career with a children's book. She lives in Suffolk with husband Norman. They have two sons, two grandsons and two great grandchildren.

Declutter and donate?

As Spring seems finally to have arrived, perhaps you have begun to declutter and are wondering what to do with all those useful items which you no longer need. The solution could be to donate your unwanted books, toys, clothes, crockery, music, kitchen or garden equipment, and even small items of furniture to the next ‘Give or Take’ event organised by Transition Sudbury and District.

Please bring along your unwanted items to the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard any time between 10 am and 12 noon on Saturday May 12th.

Nothing electrical, toxic, hazardous or broken can be accepted, but we welcome all items which other people find useful.

Last Spring’s event at the Stevenson Centre was a great success, thanks to all those who brought in useful things which they no longer needed, for others take away. A vast quantity of items were donated and almost all of the items were taken away for use in other households. As always, anything remaining is donated to local charities and good causes: nothing useful goes to waste!

The intention of ‘Give or Take’ is that household items are not needlessly thrown away when they can benefit other people. Not only is this a good way of recycling, but it reduces the amount of things going into landfill. So it is very much a way of supporting the ideals of Transition – recycle, re-use and live more sustainably! Refreshments will be available and there will be a donations bucket to help defray our costs.

By the time that you are reading this, Sudbury Rotary Club will have held one of its major events of the year. Held at the beginning of the Summer term this year, Crucial Crew has been a success once again with over 700 children attending. Crucial Crew started eighteen years ago as a way of helping young children aged between 9 and 11 to understand the dangers of everyday life.

The children are presented with a number of scenarios, with some different ones each year, which give them first hand experience and the knowledge that they will require in difficult situations, and they provide a safe environment which enables the children to consider their actions in situations that would affect their personal safety. Thank you once again to our many friends and the organisations who help us with this event and of course to the schools and their teachers who bring the children along.

Sudbury Rotary Club is organising an “outing” to Fulibroch Dairy Farm on Friday 11th May. The farm is home to a herd of British Toggenburg goats and this will be an opportunity to see them, how they are looked after, the milk production process, cheese processing and also the production of Hikaotory soaps, as well as various aspects of sustainable framing. Coffee and cake will be available; if you would like to join us please contact our secretary, see below We are now beginning preparations for annual Prom Concert, which will be held this year on Saturday June 16th in St Peters, Sudbury. The Long Melford Silver Band will be making a welcome return and our soloist this year will be Evie Press, a brilliant young soprano who I am sure has a glittering career ahead of her. This second half of the concert will include selections from the traditional “Last Night of the Proms “repertoire. Tickets (£10 each) are available from Sudbury Tourist office or Compact Music. Tickets will also be available on the door. Under 16s Admission will be £5. As usual there will be a bar immediately before the performance and in the interval serving wine and soft drinks, and, of course, balloons and Union Jacks will be available to add to the festivities.

Earlier on the same day, we will be holding an auction of promises at 12 noon in St Peters with viewing from 11.30. Come along and enjoy some brisk auctioneering. Refreshments will be available. If you would like to donate items or ”promises” for the auction, the funds from which will all go to our Rotary charities, please get in touch with our secretary (below).

Our weekly programme of lunches, often with speakers continues. In April we were given an update on the Suffolk Wool Towns project – of which Sudbury is a member – by Dave Gooderham. In May we will be hearing about the Richmond Fellowship and in June about the East Air Ambulance and Befriending – the three local charities we will be supporting in 2018-19.

Bures Open Gardens Bures Open Gardens is on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th May 2018 from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm when around 20 gardens will be open in the village over the two days. Two of the gardens at least could justify a visit just on their own - those at Bures Mill and at Highfields Farm. This year's event will have a dragon theme. In addition, there will be an art exhibition and sale, plant sales at various gardens, cream teas, cake stall and book stall. Refreshments in various gardens and St Mary's Church, and a pop-up restaurant on Bures Common on Sunday from 12.00 noon to 2.00 pm, weather permitting.

Upbeat Heart Support Mark Murphy of Suffolk Radio was Guest Speaker at Upbeat Heart Support’s Annual Lunch recently.

The lunch held at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club is the main fund raiser of the year and was attended by 140 members and raised £2000 for the charity. Members thoroughly enjoyed Mark’s talk and whilst he was there he presented a High Sherriff’s Award to the Chairman, Sylvia Baker for her work at the charity. Also Mark Murphy presents Sylvia Baker with a High Sherriff Award attending were Cardiac Nurse Kate Turner and Cardiac Exercise instructor Maureen Cooling. Mark said “What a great welcome I received from all the members who are clearly passionate about being part of Upbeat, I now know where to go if I need some help in the future”.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk This November our nation will mark a hundred years since the end of the First World War. It was a terrible, industrial-scale conflict which saw chemical weapons deployed at scale for the first time. Around 1.3m soldiers were killed or wounded by chemical attacks with agents such as mustard gas and chlorine. We said then that it would be the ‘war to end all wars’; we certainly hoped never again to see our troops blindfolded and shuffling along with their arm on the shoulder of a comrade in front, following blinding from chemical attack.

And yet, that same terrible technology of chemical warfare used against our troops in the trenches a century ago, was recently deployed in Douma, Syria.

The force responsible for the attack struck innocent civilians, leaving up to 75 people dead, including children and toddlers. It now seems irrefutable that the Syrian Government was responsible for deploying those weapons to murder, traumatise and disfigure the very same civilian population which it is their responsibility - like any civilised Government - to defend.

In response, having reviewed the extensive evidence base, the Prime Minister committed the Royal Air Force to a limited series of targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian Regime’s chemical weapons capability. This action was taken in a co-ordinated response with our allies in the United States and France, and has been heralded as a successful action by national leaders from countries across the globe, including Germany, Canada and Australia.

I believe that tyrants prepared to gas their own civilians cannot be allowed to conclude that it is a legitimate action. Committing to the use of force is a true last resort, a step no Government ever wants to take. But what were the options? Diplomacy is always preferable but Russia can veto any meaningful measures at the UN. Doing nothing would have meant more deaths, more chemical attacks, and more terrible suffering. We therefore committed to a proportionate, targeted air raid that undermined Syria’s chemical warfare machine without any reported casualties. It was a difficult decision, but I believe Britain did the right thing in seeking to check the terror that is chemical warfare.

Around 50 people attended the 15th anniversary of the Sudbury counselling charity opening in Friar Street Sudbury. The celebration was held at the Masonic Hall, which was provided free of charge for the charity, as was the splendid buffet provided by The Bridge Project.

Kernos Director Graham Hill welcomed Sudbury Town Mayor Sarah Page & thanked her for choosing L-R: Lydia Page-Wright, Kernos Director Kernos as one of her Graham Hill, Sudbury Town Mayor Sarah supported charities during Page, South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge, her term as Mayor and Evie Press and Ami Crowley invited her to opening the evening. In her talk The Mayor spoke of her support for the vital work that Kernos provides to the community. She said that since Kernos opened 15 years ago they had received over 3,200 referrals for counselling support for local children and adults.

South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge and member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Mental Health & Babergh District Councillors Adrian and Jan Osborne also attended as ardent supporters of the Centre’s valuable service.

James Cartlidge said “The Kernos Centre is a fantastic local charity that provides vital services to young people challenged by mental health issues. I was very pleased to attend the 15th Anniversary Celebration and enjoyed the entertainment from local musicians. I commend the Kernos Centre for reaching this milestone.”

Also among the attendees supporting Kernos were Shirley Moore CEO Befriending Scheme, Ruth & Phil Worsley from the Sudbury Cancer Support Group and Rob Allen from the Bridge Project. Director of Counselling Chris Boatwright said “The local need and demand for our service is much greater now than when we first opened. Kernos have already received 123 referrals so far in 2018 and are currently providing 80 face-to-face counselling sessions per week. I do believe we are the ‘net beneath the net’ for so many vulnerable people in our local community”.

Finance Director Peter Brown said “Donations, client contributions and fundraising make up more than half of the revenue for Kernos. Our thanks go to all that support us in the community. Babergh District continue to support us year on year with important contributions to core funding, and Suffolk Community Foundation give tremendous support with our grant applications.

Sudbury town Council & Parish Councils & other local organisations have also supported us with donations towards our centre”.

The highlight of the evening however were the performances given by 2 local young people, which received huge universal applause. 17yr old Lydia PageWright a 6th Form student at the Thomas Gainsborough School sang 2 songs.

‘I will fix you’ Cold Play and ‘A Bridge over Troubled Water’. 15yr old Evie Press, a student at Colchester County High School, also sang two songs, which she had written and composed herself. Both young people made a huge impact on the audience and declared that they supported everything that Kernos stood for. As did 18yr old Ami Crowley who announced she would be doing a skydive for 2 charities on the 17th of August 2018. “The first charity I am fundraising for is Marie curie cancer care. The second charity I am fundraising for is the Kernos Centre. They are fantastic and I can't thank them enough personally.

I would like to give back to them as a thank you. The money I raise will go to these charities to help those in need, and also as a thank you for everything they have done for me.”

Chris Boatwright said “We still passionately believe in providing equal access to all. That is why the Kernos Centre was formed, and why we still exist today.

I think the courage, passion and the words expressed by the young people this evening confirms why we need to continue our service.”

Riverside restaurant invests thousands to bring success A stunning riverside restaurant and bar will soon be back to its glory days according to its new management team. Thousands of pounds has been invested into The Riverside (formerly The Boathouse) in a bid to make it Sudbury’s finest dining establishment. New manager Paul Roberts, said: “This is a completely new start for the establishment, we have completely redecorated and refurbished the entire premises, including fitting a brand new Mr Roberts pictured outside the new state-of-the-art kitchen. “We Riverside restaurant and bar believe The Riverside is a massive upgrade to how the establishment has been in recent years.”

Historically, The Boathouse was one of Sudbury’s most popular restaurants but has suffered difficult trading periods in recent years. However, Mr Roberts, says he is confident The Riverside will soon be a big success again. The Riverside will consist of a 40-seat restaurant with an open view kitchen. There will also be a separate, stylish bar area serving premier beers, spirits and cocktails. The new restaurant and bar has also recruited popular local chef Martin Ingram, who has worked for some best known catering companies and restaurants in the area. “Martin is very well-known locally and we are delighted to have recruited him as head chef. Martin is preparing a fantastic and exciting menu, which will change seasonally. All food will be cooked to order using only the best produce meaning our food will always be of the highest quality,” added Mr Roberts.

Food available will include small plate tapas style dishes and other popular dishes. The Riverside will open from 11am to 11pm Tuesday to Sundays.

Charities link up as café opens at St Peter’s in Sudbury A new pop-up café has recently opened at St Peter’s in Sudbury town centre.

The outlet is run by Sudbury social enterprise The Bridge Project, and serves drinks, cakes and light lunches. The cafe will also provide work experience for Bridge Project clients, some of who are disadvantaged adults, and will be open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 2pm on any days that the building is not being used for other events. Sisters Rosemay and April Gray enjoy a Café manager, Jo Searle, drink and the bean bags at the Bridge said: “I have been very Project Cafe at St Peters surprised by the number of customers, so far. It looks good for the future.” The opening of the café, earlier this month, was supported by St Peter’s volunteers, who make up the team who work tirelessly to ensure that the doors of St Peter’s remain open to the public and that every event runs smoothly and safely. Giant beanbags and children's toys have also been purchased with funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund to make the cafe more colourful and appealing to families and young people.

Chair of the Friends of St. Peter’s, Oliver Forder, said: “This is an excellent example of two local charities working together for the benefit of the Sudbury community.”

East Anglian Garden Group On 7th April about 80 members enjoyed Harriet Rycroft’s inspirational talk on Summer Splendour, Planting Exciting Container Displays. Harriet was Head Gardener at the famous Whichford Pottery and was responsible for designing and maintaining thousands of pots, including the spectacular displays for Chelsea. She uses different sized planters, placed at different heights where necessary, to create the impression of an established garden, and a huge selection of plants, some grown on wigwams, with an interesting variety of foliage, texture and colour. Dark flowers should be grown against pale foliage to stop them disappearing, and the usual rules of right plant- right place, apply, as well as taking into account the effect of light during different times of the day.

She always uses slow release fertiliser when planting up, and doesn’t approve of crocks in the base of the pot, as it allows space for slugs and ants to move in. She recommended the use of Sylvagrow - all purpose peat free compost, and finished by planting up a container, with succulents, using broken pots for support and decoration, nothing is wasted in her garden!

We have now finished our series of Spring lectures and will be meeting again on the 6th October for Stephen Barstow, and his talk ‘Around the World In 80 Plants’. This will be in our new home at Chamberlin Hall in Bildeston, which we are all very pleased with! We are now beginning the summer visits with the first outing to the Stody Gardens, in Holt, on May 16th. This is in conjunction with The Suffolk Gardens Trust, and this will be by coach. We will be seeing the stunning Rhododendrons, and the famed Azalea Water Gardens, with over 2000 mature specimens. Details of the visit will be found on our website. SEH BAC surveyor comes to the rescue of Badger the dog Award-winning home improvement specialists SEH BAC are commending the quick thinking of one of its surveyors, who came to the rescue of a customer in need.

Whilst surveyor Rob was measuring a customer’s property, the customer came into difficulty walking his dog Badger. Whilst on the walk, he unfortunately slipped and badly broke his ankle. Living in a remote location, Rob acted quickly and called for the emergency services who swiftly airlifted the customer to hospital.

“Being in such an isolated area, it was really lucky I was there when it happened. It was quite a nasty injury and he was in considerable pain, but thankfully the company’s first aid training came in handy until the helicopter was able to land nearby and provide the help the customer needed,” explains Rob. Although the customer was now in safe hands, it left Badger the dog all alone. To avoid this, Rob stayed at the customer’s home for over four hours, and when no family members were able to take over, Rob secured the house and brought Badger back home to Ipswich to take care of him overnight. “I didn’t want to leave Badger on his own - especially with the customer’s severe injury, it was uncertain when he would be able to return home. With family too far away to look after him, it made sense to bring him home with me. He was a great guest, very well-behaved and a real delight to have – I almost didn’t want to give him back!”

County Council set to kick start Chilton Woods development

The county council plans to kick start the Chilton Woods development, subject to Cabinet approval. With a planning application now agreed with Babergh District Council, the county council is committed to forging ahead with the roll out of the Chilton Woods development as quickly as possible.

At its meeting on 17 April, the county council’s Cabinet will be asked to agree to proceed with an upfront land sale approach to delivering the homes and jobs planned for the area. An upfront land sale would see the council sell “unserviced” land to housebuilders/residential developer(s) either in lots/parcels or as a whole.

Various delivery options were evaluated against the councils objectives for the area, which are: • Delivering homes as soon as possible, ensuring that 25% of the homes are affordable • Securing capital receipts to enable greater investment in other council services and • Helping to enable the delivery of employment land and considering opportunities for third party funding As well as agreeing the delivery approach, the Cabinet is also being asked to set aside funding of up to £2.7m, to be released over a ten year period, to engage the necessary professional services that will ensure the council achieves the best return possible. The council is committed to working with developers who will deliver the development in the line with the agreed planning permission. Furthermore, developers will need to gain agreement from Babergh District Council, the planning authority, on a range of detailed matters including the detailed layout of the scheme, design and appearance of buildings and landscaping. Public consultation will be carried out as part of this process. Cllr Colin Noble, Leader of Suffolk County Council said: “A great deal of hard work has gone into getting this development off the ground. It has been on the cards for many years so I am pleased that we have secured outline planning approval on the site and can get on with delivering much needs homes and jobs, in line with Babergh District Council’s local plan.

“Throughout the planning process we engaged with local communities and carefully considered all the comments they made, making changes wherever possible. “If Cabinet agrees to the recommended approach and the funding, I will be asking officers to start engaging the market in the coming weeks, so homes can start being delivered in 2019/20.”

The scheme includes the following: • 1,150 new homes (288 (25%) of which will be affordable) • employment land (15 ha) to provide circa 1,900 new jobs • a new primary school and pre-school provision • improvements to key highway junctions in the town prioritised to come forward at an early stage • securing detailed approval for a new roundabout and road to open access to a significant area of employment land to the west of the site • investment into public transport, plus investment into walking and cycling improvements • sports pitches, changing facilities and parking • a village centre comprising local retail, pub and village hall • a new household waste recycling centre • open space, community woodland and children’s play areas.

Even more important is the AGM which will be held on the 24th May at 7pm, if the Community is to be represented in the Library we need a strong Committee, please do consider if you can make a contribution to this worthwhile cause. Fortunately the majority of the Committee are willing to continue, but we do need more members new blood and fresh ideas.

Sudbury Casino night raises hundreds of pounds for in demand emotional well-being charity The event was held at the Prince of Wales pub, Sudbury, which recently launched a six-month campaign to raise funds for the local Just Talk Campaign. The Just Talk Campaign, which recently received official registered charitable status, offers support to people needing help with emotional and mental health issues. It was launched by leading psychotherapist Glenda Roberts and counsellor Sharon Kendall in 2016 Members of the Just Talk Campaign following a number of with pub landlord Duncan Tuhey at the suicides in the Sudbury recent casino night area.

The casino night consisted of a full-sized rand roulette, black jack and poker table and raised around ÂŁ300.00. Pub landlord Duncan Tuhey said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;All in all it was a very good night, which was well intended and we are delighted to have raised more money for the campaign. We did have a few teething problems and this was very much a learning curve for us. We are now going to hold a more exclusive ticket only casino night in June with bigger and better prizes, which we are confident will raise more money the charity.â&#x20AC;?

The pub - which has invested thousands of pounds in a bid to become the town's premier venue for sporting events - has also been donating 5p for every drink sold during every live televised sporting events and will continue to do so. The Just Talk Campaign holds free monthly drop-in sessions where people can discuss any problem they may have in confidence without needing to book an appointment. The campaign also offers affordable one-to-one counselling services. The charity has already helped many local people, some who were suicidal, to cope with their problems.

Ms Roberts, who also runs the ExploringU Wellbeing Centre based in Sudbury, said: "We had a lot of fun at the casino night and we are very grateful to the Prince of Wales for helping us to raise funds so we can help more people. During the night we spoke to a number of people who said they would be interested in engaging with our services, which is fantastic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe everyone has the right to be heard and to have someone they can trust. We offer a safe and friendly environment where people of any age or background can come and talk freely about any issue they may have."

New Chief Executive Announced Suffolk County Council has appointed a new chief executive, Nicola Beach, following a unanimous recommendation by the authorityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Staff Appointments Committee and decision by the full council. Nicola, who is currently executive director of infrastructure and environment at Essex County Council, will join SCC this summer. Sue Cook will continue in her role as Interim Chief Executive until this time, when she will return to her role as corporate director of health, wellbeing and childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s services.

Potholes - funding boost and rise in Insurance claims Potholes continue to be a key issue for councillors and residents alike. There are two significant updates this month: Following the bad weather in February and March, Suffolk County Council has received ÂŁ2.5m of additional funding from the Government to help with road repairs.

Suffolk Highways are encouraging residents to report potholes using the reporting tool (available at highwaysreporting.suffolk.gov.uk) and have already received over 11,000 reports in 2018. However, concerns have been raised by some councillors and residents who have been informed by the online tool that a pothole has been repaired, when in fact the work has not been carried out. If you experience this, please let me know so that I can inform the Cabinet Member for Highways of the problem. Insurance claims against Suffolk County Council due to â&#x20AC;&#x153;carriageway surface defectsâ&#x20AC;?, such as potholes, have risen in recent years, from 363 in 2013 to 647 in 2017. A total of 2239 claims were made in this five-year period, but 84.7% of these were successfully defended by the council. Despite this, between 2013 and 2017, Suffolk County Council paid out ÂŁ226,432 in compensation and legal fees.

Unfortunately for me, a lie in is never an option because Mum needs to get up very early. Despite my reluctance, I’m one of the first out of the door as we all rush into the garden then it’s back to the kitchen for buttered toast if we are lucky. As we all settle down Hettie the ex-battery hen wanders in, softly clucking and scratching at the floor then wanders out again to dig in Mum’s plant pots.

Many of the permanent residents are getting on (not me of course, I am in my prime!) and so are some of the animals awaiting new homes. Lily is an elderly dog that has recently moved into foster care and she is enjoying every minute as you can see in the photo. If you are looking for a pet to complete your family please consider an older dog, and contrary to popular belief, they CAN learn new tricks! Our talented crafters send a big thank you for all the materials and wool you have donated. These have been used to make lots of quality items to be sold at future events. The Fundraisers are preparing for our £1 Sale at St. Lukes Church Hall in Tiptree next month and a Summer Sale in Newton Green in June.

“Backlash Ballroom” entertains at The Delphi Centre

On Saturday 14th April, Richard & Lynn Miller brought 6 professional dancers called “Backlash Ballroom” to The Delphi Centre for an evening of glitz and glamour with a show dance routine split into two sessions of dance, Ballroom and Latin. The dancers made multiple changes of costume appropriate to dances such as Cha Cha Cha, Paso Doble , Charleston, Tango and of course beautiful flowing dresses for Waltz and Quickstep. The evening was a charity event for Age UK and Barnardo’s and was organised by Cheryl & Steve Claydon who with friends run the Wednesday Tea Dances at the centre fortnightly. Richard Miller was a great DJ and had everyone dancing to some fabulous music. The evening had a great party atmosphere and was well supported with over 120 in attendance. New Local History Book Published

Misery and Misfortune is not the cheeriest title one could think up for a local history book but that is the name of Geoffrey Robinson’s new book, chronicling some of the sudden deaths and inquests that occurred in Suffolk in the first half of the 19th century. Geoffrey is a local historian from Worlingworth near Framlingham and his first three publications concerned historical aspects of his home parish. This venture into Suffolk local history is to be welcomed as Geoffrey is well known for his research skills, both in the local and family history fields.

His newspaper research began in 2010 when he searched the Framlingham Weekly News for items about Worlingworth. He then looked at the Ipswich Journal and began noting down some of the bizarre sudden deaths that occurred in the county.

The result of this research is the book, the full title of which is “Misery and Misfortune – Sudden Deaths in Suffolk 1800-1850.” Completely self-published, this is a book that, in turn, shocks and titillates – exactly the sort of reaction that the newspaper editor of the early 19th century would have hoped for from his readership.

Coroner’s inquests into sudden deaths were reported in increasing numbers in the Ipswich Journal and other provincial newspapers during that period in time and those reports fascinated a middle class readership. Newspaper reporting in this field must have had an influence in drawing Victorians into their obsession with death. In our health and safety-conscious environment, these sorry stories of accidental death and of determined suicide must seem like they occurred in a completely different world. They did.

With over one hundred and eighty sudden deaths described from the newspaper accounts and twenty-nine black and white images, this attractive publication is good value for its £10 price tag.

A Scotsman whose first taste of golf was in the Outer Hebredes has driven off his season as men’s captain at Newton Green. Glaswegian-born Ian, a former hockey player at county and Army level, was completing his career in the services on the island of Benbecula at the age of 39, when he tried a few holes of golf on the island’s Askernish nine-hole course. From then on golf overtook his love of hockey and he has never stopped playing, while pursuing a career as a technical engineer in the auto industry, from which he retired three years ago.

Free Taster Day for Ladies at Newton Green Newton Green will be one of the golf clubs across Suffolk promoting a special free taster day aimed at bringing ladies of all ages into the activity. Promoted via the Suffolk Ladies’ County Golf Association, the day is aimed at offering fresh air, friendship, fitness and fun. More than a dozen clubs across the county are taking part in the event on Wednesday, May 16, with sessions throughout the day and early evening to give both working and non-working ladies the chance to attend. The tasting experience will include meeting and greeting by playing members, and receiving basic tips from the club’s professional staff. Every participant will have the chance of playing at least one hole, whether it be on the club’s short course or at least one of the main holes. All equipment will be provided. Once players have had a chance to try their hands at swinging a club and being assessed for their skills, they will take refreshments with members able to offer guidance and support on their journey into golf. After taking part in a session, participants will be offered exclusive coaching and other packages to help get them started in the sport.

Lizzie Johnson, women’s captain, commented: “Our ladies’ section has been exceptionally successful in recent years. We have managed to achieve this with an inclusive and happy atmosphere across the whole section.“At the same time, we welcome the involvement of Suffolk so we can move forward in tandem to bring even more ladies of all ages into the sport.”

Hole in one!

Diana Harris Vice Captain had a Hole in one on the Gainsborough 7th using her favourite 7 wood, it was a lovely shot, one bounce and in the hole! She was playing a friendly game with two New Members who she was merrily relaying a story of a lady who had got a hole in one with her in a previous competition on that hole, not aware that she was about to do the same!

Daily Mail Foursomes Win Stoke by Nayland Ladies Mandy Byham and Lesley Hitchcock won 1up on the second round of their Daily Mail Foursomes against two Ladies from Fynn Valley Golf Club. The Stoke Ladies were giving 4 shots to the Fynn Valley ladies in this closely fought game. Stoke were 3 holes up on the 10th hole but then lost the next three holes on the trot to go all square. They won on the 14th then lost it again on the 16th, won the 17 and halved the 18th winning the game 1up.
