New Gym at Kingfisher Leisure Centre South Suffolk Leisure (SSL), the charitable trust who manage and run the leisure facilities in Suffolk have pledged their commitment to improving the health & fitness facilities at Kingfisher Leisure Centre by investing ÂŁ150,000 in a new and improved gym. This considerable investment in the health and fitness facilities by our Trust meets their ongoing mission in providing quality facilities and service for the community that promote a healthy lifestyle.

East Anglian Garden Group Cleve West We are all very excited in anticipation of our Celebrity Speaker, one of the country’s leading garden designers, Cleve West. We are extremely lucky to have persuaded him to come to Suffolk, as he rarely gives talks, but he will be telling us of his passionate involvement with Horatio’s Garden. Many will remember Horatio Chapple, aged 17, who was tragically killed by a polar bear whilst on an Arctic expedition. His father was a spinal surgeon at Salisbury Hospital, where Horatio worked as a volunteer. Horatio always thought that the hospital should have a Healing Garden, and after his death contributions flooded in. Cleve designed Horatio’s Garden, and his talk is entitled Healing Gardens. He will speak from a personal perspective on how gardens can enhance well-being, and of their therapeutic effect. Examples range from private sanctuaries, his own allotment and the much -celebrated Horatio’s Garden. Cleve is the winner of 6 Chelsea Gold Medals, and 2 Best in Show Medal, and much more. The new season starts with our annual visit to Anglesey Abbey on Saturday 6th January, for a walk in the Winter Garden, which should blow the Christmas cobwebs away. Julian trained at RHS Harlow Carr, and Writtle College, before setting up his own business to advise on pest control, and how to make gardens a safe environment for wildlife. The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding received a ÂŁ25,000 Community Award from the Freemasons following an unprecedented public vote. The charity was one of 6 to be nominated by Freemasons in Suffolk, with local people voting to decide the level of their Award. They were part of almost 180,000 people who voted across England and Wales.

The Community Awards are a major part of Freemasonry’s 300th anniversary celebrations. The Masonic Charitable Foundation is distributing three million pounds to 300 charities across the country, with the public vote deciding on the range of Awards from £4,000 to £25,000.

Jan Derbyshire, Chairman of The Shelley Centre said: “The grant of ÂŁ25,000 which we have been awarded following the public vote is hugely important and we would like to express our heartfelt and grateful thanks to everybody who took the trouble to vote for us. This is an amazing amount of money which will make such a difference to our Charity and enable The Centre to get several much-needed maintenance projects underway so that we can continue to benefit the health of wellbeing of adults and children with disabilities through riding therapies. We are also very grateful to the Masonic Charitable Foundation for this opportunity and their generosity.â€?

The Masonic Charitable Foundation obtains all of its funding from Freemasons, their families and friends. It is estimated that half of Freemasonry’s total charitable expenditure of over £33m goes to charities that help people in communities across the country.

Going through a divorce can be an extremely difficult time both emotionally and financially. In the past the more traditional approach to Divorce has been for the parties to resolve their differences in the courtroom but increasingly with court delays this process can often lead to increased stress and cost to both parties. The premise of dealing with a family case ‘collaboratively’ is for the parties to agree to achieve a settlement through collaboration as opposed to making an application to the Family Court.

In the collaborative process, each party instructs a specialist, collaboratively trained divorce lawyer and all negotiations and decision making takes place in a series of four way meetings attended by both parties and their divorce solicitors. Control is given back to the parties in the divorce to set their own timetable and agenda for these meetings rather than a timetable being imposed by the court. As the parties have a direct input into the agenda they will each be able to discuss issues most pressing to them at an early stage of the collaborative divorce process. It is possible to bring in experts to the four way meetings, where required, such as Independent Financial Advisers and/or Family Consultants to ensure that both parties have the correct assistance to help them make important decisions for the benefit of their family.

There is far more flexibility in the Collaborative process than the more traditional court process and so it can often lead to a speedier resolution of issues and therefore reduced divorce costs. If the parties have children it is essential that communication is maintained to enable the parents to be able to co-parent their children when they have completed the divorce process.

One of the benefits of collaboration is being able to keep the children at the forefront of all discussions in the hope that the impact of the divorce on the children can be minimised.

There is still the obligation on the both parties to provide full disclosure of their financial positions to enable the parties to be fully informed before making any decisions. However, the process of providing this information is more informal and less restrictive than that prescribed within the court process. Ultimately the collaborative divorce process hopefully ends with an agreement being reached between the parties which they have both worked towards together rather than a decision being imposed upon them.

Pause For Thought The stress is awful! Nowadays there doesn’t seem to be enough time for everything. The pressure can become overwhelming. I have a way out. I know how you feel because I’ve been there. Working in a mental health charity, I see people suffering with stress and anxiety. It can ruin lives and I want to offer you a drug free way out. These words come from someone I trust: “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” Matthew 11 v28. Yes, it was Jesus but what did he mean? From pure personal experience I can say; now I trust Jesus I feel his peace even when mayhem is going on in the world all around me. Paul explains this inner peace. He said “And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4 V7. He got it, do you? Do you want to know what this inner peace is?

You can investigate and find out all about it. You don’t have to accept it but you would be daft to pass by an opportunity for peace like this. Believe me.

Innovative events wanted to widen the appeal of St Peter’s - Call goes out to organisations and individuals A call has gone out to performers and acts who would like to bring their show to a landmark Sudbury town centre venue.

The Friends of St Peters, who look after St Peter’s Church, want to hear from organisations and individuals with a view to putting on creative events that will appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

The call comes after the venue last month successfully hosted the theatre production Anglian Mist. Feedback from members of the sell-out audience was overwhelmingly positive, and the use of lighting and sound during the performance literally threw new light on what is creatively possible in the venue.

Chairman of the Friends of St Peters, Peter Gray said: “This was a bold move for St Peter’s and part of a trial of new kinds of events to be hosted in the venue following feedback from the local community. “While St Peter’s has traditionally been a ‘hall for hire’, the Friends of St Peter’s are overseeing a regeneration project in partnership with the Churches Conservation Trust, which they hope will lead to the building being used to host more contemporary events alongside those currently taking place in the venue.” As well as entertaining the audience, the Anglian Mist event raised £1,600 towards St Peter’s regeneration project.

The Friends of St Peter’s are now actively seeking out partnerships with organisations and individuals, with a view to putting on a programme of interesting events that will appeal to audiences of various ages.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk With the New Year comes occasion for reflection on the one that has passed and the opportunity to set priorities for the months to come. In Parliamentary terms 2017 was dominated by the Brexit process and the aftermath of a general election that called for a ‘stronger negotiating mandate’. Given the personal disappointment for the Prime Minister resulting from that election, and the huge pressure and complexity of the negotiations, it is testament to her tenacity and statesmanship that we finished 2017 progressing positively to the next stage.

I now hope first and foremost that the negotiations can move forward in the most positive possible spirit, resulting in a new and comprehensive trade deal between the UK and EU. Secondly, I also hope that the fact we have made progress on Brexit can enable us to focus on some of the other mammoth challenges facing the Government on the domestic front. From the NHS and adult social care to the continuing challenge of providing opportunity for our younger generation, there is much to occupy us aside from Brexit, and I am passionate about ensuring that we deliver a reforming administration capable of offering lasting solutions.

A key issue is that of social mobility, so that we avoid the stagnation of a generation, and in my view this is best boosted by higher educational attainment. I was delighted in December to learn that reading standards in our schools are the best that they have been for 15 years. This dramatic shift in children's attainment follows the 2010 reforms that changed the national curriculum to require schools to use phonics as a teaching method.

The phonic process means that children are taught to read by learning individual sounds and then blending them into words. In 2012, 58% of sixyear-olds reached the phonics check pass mark.

This year, 81% of six-year-olds reached that standard, with 92% reaching it by the end of Year 2. This is a credit to the hard work of our teachers, and with a more favourable ‘fairer funding’ formula for schools on the way, hopefully we can look forward to further progress in future.

BLINDS We are a Group of walkers within the Suffolk Area of The Ramblers Association. This is a charity whose aims are to encourage walking, to protect rights of way, develop walks and to defend the beauty of the countryside for the benefit of all.

The Group offers about 50 led walks every year by our members which are usually 5 - 7 miles in length and suitable for people of most levels of fitness and take place on Wednesday and Sundays mornings. Shorter evening walks are organised in the summer, starting and finishing at a local pub or café with a chance for refreshments and to socialise with other members. First of all a Happy New year from Sudbury Rotary Club!

As ever, the Rotary Club of Sudbury has enjoyed a busy December including the Annual Schools Concert, the Christmas Tree Festival, the Tree of Memories and Santa's Grotto as well some special social occasions.

This year, four local primary schools took part in the concert in St Peters on December 4th.

The audience clearly enjoyed the contributions from Pot Kiln, St Gregory's, Tudor and Woodhall Primary schools. Thank you to our secretary Roger Green for organising the event and all those who helped him We had a record number of Christmas trees (over 90) at this the 15th annual Christmas Tree Festival, held between 6th and 10th December. Many people said how much they appreciate the Festival and the way in which it is a fitting and magical start to Christmas. Thank you to the many charities, churches, schools, businesses and individuals who showcase their activities by decorating a Christmas tree. Every year I marvel at the imagination and ingenuity of the designs which people create Thanks to the Co-operative Society, the Tree of Memories in the church chancel was the opportunity to remember loved ones and hang messages and dedications on the tree, not only during the Festival but throughout the Christmas period. Early in the New Year these dedications will be blessed during a service at St Gregory’s.

Last year Santa had a new home for his grotto in Sudbury Library, This has continued this year but he also enjoyed a new location during the Town Council’s Christmas Lights Switch-on, in the warm and cosy surroundings of Holmes and Hill’s offices fronting on to North Street – and there was even room for his reindeer to park, or should I say, be tethered outside! It’s been a delight to welcome so many children – and their parents and grandparents - to his grotto. Each year, Rotary’s Christmas activities help us to raise – through your contributions – in the region of £3000 towards local charities. Thank you to all of those of you have come up to us outside the Library and accosted Santa’s elves with your contributions.

Just before Christmas, we had a talk from Joanne Main from the Sudbury Community Depot and we were pleased to have the opportunity to bring to that meeting items that the Depot needs to help those who are homeless yes, even in Sudbury – or who are trying to furnish a home. Members plan to continue doing this on a regular basis We like to have fun too, and this year we went to Sudbury Rugby Club for our Annual Christmas Dinner where we enjoyed excellent catering from Jam Tartz. We were entertained by Evie Press, an exceptionally talented young musician still at school and we were moved by her truly exquisite singing We now look forward to our programme for 2018. Early in January, Keith Davis will be coming to talk to us about the work of the Farming Community Network and a fortnight later Mark Bills is coming to talk to us about the progress with the exciting new developments at Gainsborough’s House which are likely to really put Sudbury on the national and international map as an important cultural destination.

'Makers of Modern Thought' by David Sharp Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents a series of 10 Lectures starting on Thursday 11th January 2018 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm.

The course will explore the lives, ideas and legacies of some key philosophical and scientific thinkers over the last two and a half thousand years. Greeks and Hebrews posed fundamental questions about life and human nature. In India the Buddha contemplated wisdom and compassion. Aquinas saw theology as the queen of the sciences but in the Renaissance Galileo and Francis Bacon laid the foundations of modern science. Descartes and Newton heralded the Enlightenment when 'reason' was emphasised by some and criticized by others. Darwin gave us the theory of evolution which is still not accepted by everyone. Nietzsche and Marx have been called the 'masters of suspicion' where philosophy and religion are concerned, but in recent times their influence has waned.

Who are the modern philosophers and what are their ideas?

David has taught Religious Studies and Philosophy in schools up to A level, worked in Interfaith projects in Ipswich as faith officer and tutor for various related accredited adult courses and given talks on aspects of religion/philosophy to interested groups. He has been a WEA tutor for the last five years and attends a monthly Philosophy in Pubs evening with friends.

The Talented Earees An exhibition of hitherto unseen works will be on display at the Quay Theatre next spring. They are by Joan and Margaret Earee, daughters of the wellknown Sudbury artist, Paul Earee (1888-1968), who some claim is “the finest artist born in the town since Gainsborough�. Several works by Paul Earee himself will also be on display.

The Earees’ oil paintings, watercolours, pencil sketches and stunning needlework and embroidery pictures will be showcased for the first time. Potential purchasers are asked to provide their names and contact details at the Quay Theatre. However, there will be an opportunity to buy watercolours of plants by Joan Earee at the exhibition.

One of Paul Earee’s paintings will be chosen as a gift for planned new gallery at Gainsborough’s House on Gainsborough Street. Auctioneers Reeman Dansie will offer a selection of works by East Anglian artists, including the Earees, at their premises in Severalls Business Park, Colchester, in their April Antiques and Fine Art Sale.

The exhibition, be held at the Quay Theatre in collaboration with Sudbury Ephemera Archive, will hold a private viewing on Sunday 28 January 12-3pm and will then be open from 29 January – 27 February 2018 to coincide with the annual series of Sunday night local history talks one of which is about Paul Earee on 4 February at 7.30pm.

News from Long Melford Library We have been busy during December hosting our first ‘meet the street’ evening.

This is when the residents of one street in the village are invited to the library to get together with their neighbours and to see what their local library has to offer. On the 17th Father Christmas was guest of honour at the Sunday Crafts Children’s Christmas party, where fun, food and games were enjoyed by the attendees, thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Long Melford Library and the East Anglian Co-op. Let me start by wishing you a healthy, peaceful 2018 from everyone at SESAW. We enjoyed lots of new toys sent over the festive season, unlike my local canine friend. Do you recall â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sugar Faceâ&#x20AC;?, so called when caught with the stolen stollen cake last Christmas? Seems this Cairn is still not very canny after being caught out again. This time he pinched a squirrel from a box of decorations, or so he thought! Turns out the brown fluffy mouthful was the guardsmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hat off a decorative soldier nutcracker.

Have you started the New Year full of good intentions and resolutions? I ask because we animals are in need of new volunteers to look after us. Our happy team is dwindling as personal circumstances change and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real struggle to keep up with all the jobs. If you cannot make a weekly commitment, perhaps you could help occasionally with fundraising. There are lots of things to do both before and during an event but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth all the hard work.

We also need materials for our â&#x20AC;&#x153;craftersâ&#x20AC;? who have been busy knitting and sewing during the long winter evenings. If you can spare anything they could use, please leave it bagged up and labelled â&#x20AC;&#x153;CRAFTâ&#x20AC;? or let us know if you would like it collected. I am happy to be back writing my mayors report for the new year, having had to take some time out due to ill health. Firstly I must thank Cllr. Sue Ayres for all her support and help during this time and the staff at the town hall who are always so fabulous!

I was thrilled to attend the Royal a British a Legion Festival of Remembrance at Ormiston Academy. So touching and so wonderful to see such talented pupils performing. Our local branch of the legion are so dedicated and hardworking.

This years Poppy Appeal was a huge success thanks to them and all the volunteers. I was very proud to be part of the launch.

I attended the St John Ambulance ambulance service at St Mary Le Tower Church in Ipswich. It was lovely to see all the members of this great organisation in a Suffolk being recognised. I was happy to attend a Dementia Friendly event with Charlotte at The Ipswich building Society in Sudbury. She is working towards making Sudbury a dementia friendly town, it was so good to learn how we can all be part of this. It was an honour to attend the opening of the Sudbury community depot. Ashleigh our lovely carnival queen did the honours beautifully and it was great to see the depot and all the great work Teresa and her colleagues do.

The fireworks at Delphi were fabulous and it was so lovely to see so so many people attending and having fun. Well done all who helped out and organised this brilliant family event. I had a joyous morning judging the Mayors Christmas Card Competition. Thank to all the schools and pupils who took part and well done to our winner Grace and all the runners up. Such a hard task to choose out of so many fabulous entries. I was proud to send out my cards with Grace's lovely design.

This was to recognise the work of Canine Partners. We were both amazed and in awe of the work of these dogs, who are true companions and carers for their owners. The display of the dogs skills in the church left all who were there truly touched. I would urge everyone to support this brilliant cause. The partners really do enhance the lives of disabled people in every possible way.

We had a lovely lunch at Brookwood Manor care home in Waldingfield. Well done to the manager and all the lovely staff for creating such a lovely environment for residents. Also at The Red House where I was thrilled to join staff and residents for lunch, a truly lovely day.

5 Tips to Help you Stop Smoking In January A professional hypnotherapist I have many happy former smokers as happy former clients, and I have noticed some interesting trends. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to share four things I have noticed about the clients who stop smoking most easily.

1) Do it for yourself : Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great if you have the support of your family, your spouse, your friends and those around you, but the best reason to do this is because you have decided that this is what you want.

2) Realise that cigarettes are not your friend: If cigarettes (and other types of smoking) were a friend, they would be the type of friend that always turns up begging for a handout, a loan, a free meal, a lift somewhere, and never give anything back. Do you really consider people like this to be your friends?

3) Make a list of the benefits: There are so many benefits of stopping smoking, most people can come up with a far longer list of what they are gaining what they are losing. Make the list of benefits and give some real thought to how it would be to have those things in your life.

4) Make a firm commitment to stopping: ironically, people who make up their minds resolutely, that under no circumstances, even if they have the worst cravings in the world, are they ever going to smoke again, tend to have few to zero cravings and often stop very easily.

Apparently Babergh are not hosting a Nativity Play this year, shepherds aplenty to shear us sheep, but three wise men?

Now that Councillor Barrett is out of favour and David Holland has retired we are left with sycophants and political yes men and women to rule us. Always voting at their party’s call and would never believe in thinking for themselves at all, in the brilliant words of WS Gilbert. With democracy ignored and Cameron’s promise of local and accountable government conveniently forgotten we have but satire to enliven the festive season. This year not a seasonal tale but a piece of doggerel to take us into another misgoverned year, not exactly Kipling or Byron I admit, but they got paid more than me.

Councillor Simon (not a pie man) lived in Sudbury fair A public minded Citizen, he joined the Council there But the Baroness of Babergh, our Simon she did not like So together with his chum Holland it was mooted “Get on yer bike” It transpired the local peasants had democratically elected Not to merge with Mid Suffolk, but were arrogantly rejected The baroness and acolytes, deemed the peasants were all dense Not to want amalgamation, when we know “It all makes sense” Its like the time of the Maga-na Carta and the barons as in days of old That in Suffolk we’re free to do as we like, as long as we do as we’re told!

But are we downhearted? No we ain’t! Let’s raise our glasses to our Councillors and celebrate. No police presence or station, no law courts, no local hospital, pot holed roads suitable for tank traps (to counter the Norfolk invasion) and a fair share of charity shops, who are we to criticise their well earned allowances and expenses? Come on, I hear you say, be nice, it is after all Christmas. Bah ruddy humbug, it’s time they put the interests of the electorate above party “loyalty”.

Every December our local press would flaunt a front page of optimistic joy whilst the festive clad Councillors and the great and good that misgovern our humble but fair abode extol the virtues of Sudbury and what will be achieved in the forthcoming year. Always a new cinema, the rejuvenation of the Hamilton Road bus station and much else besides. A plague on all their houses sez I. All that is achieved here is down to the handful of public minded townspeople who have laboured tirelessly to make Sudbury a great place to live.

Those that ensure that our sports clubs punch above their weight. Those that manage the Kernos Centre, the Bridge Project and Christopher Centre, the Salvation Army respite for carers. Take a walk down the potholed Quay Lane and note the work of scores that ensure we have Scouts, the Theatre, the Cricket, Bowls, Tennis and Croquet clubs. The wonderful Stour Valley River Trust, those that care for our iconic churches particularly St. Peter’s, such a town centre asset. The volunteers at Gainsborough’s house, the fraternal societies, Round Table, Rotary and Freemasons, all of whom raise so much for charity. The Royal British Legion, the Air and Army cadets. The congregation of my own little Catholic Church who every year raise £thousands for projects at home and in Africa. Theresa and Greg Bishop who, with a small band of helpers, have annually given up their Christmas Day so the lonely and dispossessed may partake of a goodly lunch. Far, far too many to mention here including those who quietly help a neighbour in need.

These, our town fellows and other across the country, are those who should be lauded for all they accomplish. Not loyal party members and donors or so called celebrities that make up the annual honours list together with Field Marshalls and others from the public sector granted knighthoods for just doing their job. They may get a lowly gong or whatever and an eventual invitation to a Royal garden party and dutifully curtsy or touch their forelock but they are the un-noticed who cement our fractured society not the politicians, public funded figures or media personalities that fill the front pages of our tabloid press. So this festive season let us raise a glass to pay our respects to them all.

Neil’s Nifty Brush Work Leaves Golfers Hooked

Surprised golfers walked into their changing room and found a pop up art gallery - featuring themselves. Artist Neil Jacobs had secretly been painting portraits of his fellow members of the Saturday Morning Ultimate Golf Society (SMUGS) at Newton Green Golf Club. He then hung them on the pegs in the club changing room as the 16-strong group turned up for one of their weekly sessions. Neil, an 88-year-old former college head of art, used photos of his golfing friends to make sure he was able to achieve remarkable likenesses of them all. One said: “The paintings provided a wow factor for his golfing friends and others who passed through the changing room that day. His creative talents and ideas of causing surprises never cease to amaze admirers of his work, and his golf his pretty good too.”

The paintings were on display before the annual festive lunch and annual meeting of the SMUGS, which decided to donate £150 to the Sudbury Kernos centre and £300 for shrubs for landscaping at the club.

The new Stoke by Nayland Captains Alan Line and Elaine Davidson, hosted their first mixed event of the year, the Beaujolais Brunch. Very cold and frosty weather greeted the teams for this popular Texas Scramble format with a shotgun start at eight. Both Captains featured, with their teams, in the prizes.

The Men’s Captain with a remarkable score of 52.6. His team was reduced to three after their fourth member retired injured. All the players enjoyed, after the competition, a brunch and the prize giving.
