It’s Panto Time at The Quay!

This year’s Quay Theatre pantomime performed by Sudbury Dramatic Society is Aladdin, a traditional family feast of fun and frolic written by local author Andy Gribben, who has previously written successful pantomimes for SDS, and it is being directed this year by SDS Panto stalwarts Helen and Neil Arbon. Aladdin contains the usual mix of Heroes, Villains, Genies, Custard Pies, a Magic Lamp and not to forget of course - the Laundry! (Laundry you ask? But of course!) Plus, plenty of chance for the usual amount of booing, hissing, clapping and cheering! Aladdin starts at The Quay Theatre on Friday 15th December at 7.30pm and runs until Monday 1st January at 3pm with plenty of evening and matinee performances on offer. Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a visit to the SDS pantomime at The Quay Theatre! ALADDIN has everything you could wish for in a traditional family feast of fun and frolics. All Saints Church, Little Cornard Bell Restoration Project underway Work began in October on the project to restore the tower and remove the ancient bells at All Saints Church, Little Cornard. The Bells Committee has recently received a number of generous grants, donations and promises of funding, which means the money needed to complete this ambitious project has almost reached its target. Whilst the outcome is awaited of other grant applications to help fund the restoration of the bells, it was vital that structural work within the Church began in October so that the project could be progressed without disturbing the bat colony, now in hibernation.

Work to repair the tower, remove the font so that it can be repositioned in a new bapistry area, and removal and remodelling of some of the pews has progressed quickly. With this work underway, it was possible to remove the ancient bells ready for them to be transported to John Taylor’s bell foundry in Loughborough for restoration over the coming winter months. The bells were taken down in mid-November. This was a historic occasion, as it is many years since any of the bells was last restored. The oldest bell dates from 1399 and the ‘youngest’ from 1712. The total weight of the five bells is almost 26 hundredweight.

One new bell (the treble) – dedicated to the memory of Michael Ford - will be created as part of the project and is due to be cast on 1 February 2018. It is hoped to organise a coach trip for those involved to watch the bell being cast and to tour the museum at the John Taylor foundry. The fund to restore the bells in this Grade 1 listed Church was launched three years’ ago, and it is expected that the bells will be re-hung at the Church in late Spring 2018.

Electrically-driven chime hammers will also be installed as part of the project, for use when bell ringers are not available, to ensure regular ringing of the new bells. The bells at Little Cornard have not been rung full circle in living memory, but with the project now underway, members of the PCC and the Bells Committee are confident that their dream of being able to ring the new bells on 11 November 2018 to commemorate the Armistice of WW1 will become a reality.

Charity Christmas Card Shop now open in Sudbury Cards for Good Causes has got the festive season under way in Sudbury with its pop-up charity Christmas card shop in Sudbury Library, Market Hill. The shop will raise thousands of pounds for local and national charities in the run up to Christmas with its wide selection of cards, as well as seasonal gifts and products. Staffed by a team of local volunteers, the Sudbury pop-up shop is part of a network of more than 300 temporary shops run by Cards for Good Causes, the UK’s largest multi-charity Christmas card organisation. It represents more than 250 charities including Cancer Research UK, Barnardo’s, NSPCC, Alzheimer’s Society and RNLI as well as a number of local charities such as East Anglian Air Ambulance, St Nicholas hospice, Suffolk Accident Rescue Service & Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

Shoppers will be able to choose from hundreds of different Christmas card designs, as well as traditional advent calendars and candles, wrapping paper, gift tags, napkins and stocking fillers.

Luci Fry, Shop Manager for Cards for Good Causes says: “Buying charity Christmas cards is one of the simplest ways to support good causes this festive season and we stock one of the widest ranges of Christmas cards anywhere. What is more, a higher proportion of the proceeds go to the charity compared to buying charity Christmas cards through most high street retailers, meaning a greater contribution to their vital work. The 49th Big Night Out It may have only taken 18 minutes to burn the £12,000 worth of pyrotechnics that Project Seven set off at Melford Hall on Friday 10th November but the spectacle will live long in the memory. In another massively successful show, Andrew Hagger and his team delivered a crowd pleasing evening of musically coordinated fireworks, food and fun-fare that had something for everyone. Twelve wonderfully original Guys, mostly made by the children of Long Melford village, topped off the massive bonfire which had been built from over 2000 pallets. It was lit by sponsors, Sheridan’s, Becky Skeats whose twin boys had made a Guy they christened “Donald” and which had been chosen by the organisers as ‘best in show’ in a competition judged last week.

The 6000-plus guests behaved impeccably and many stayed on to enjoy the food and fair outlets that accompanied the Kings Lynn based, Scott Grey’s family fun-fare, with its spectacular rides and thrilling lighting.

Project Seven’s Andrew told us “it was one of the best BNI evenings for many years – all went relatively smoothly, the weather was perfect and there were no insurmountable difficulties. My special thanks to the dozens of unpaid volunteers who helped before, during and after the event.

“They had the whole field cleared by the early hours of Saturday morning” adding “Every penny of our surplus is distributed to support worthy local organisations including many Scouts, Guides, Brownie and Cub groups, The LM Cricket Club, The Air Ambulance, several Hospices and dozens more. Last year £15,000 was distributed in this way and the hoped-for £10,000 from last Friday’s event should enable another year of similar generosity”.

It’s amazing that there are people that live in Long Melford who do not realise that we have our own village library. Situated at the United Reformed Church Room in Hall Street, we are a small but perfectly formed branch of Suffolk Libraries. We held a guy making session on the 5th November for the Project Seven Big Night Out and the top three guys were made at our library as well as one, made by Nina Burton who received the Sheridan’s shield for the most original entry, based on Mr Morton her school teacher!

Looking ahead, planning a viable future for the district council Since 2011 Babergh and Mid-Suffolk District Council have been working together with a single staff structure and CEO. Currently they remain two sovereign councils.

The Joint Strategic plan has marked a fundamental shift in working together to sharing a single approach. Many challenges lie ahead for local government; in 2020 central government will no longer provide funding for district councils.

In order to prepare for this we have installed Solar PV panels on our housing stock and other buildings, this will provided £7.5 million over the next twenty years. We are investing in various commercial projects to generate income. We need to do more to ensure a secure financial future. A combined district authority would wield a louder voice in Suffolk, and have a greater power of influence; it would need to be approved by both councils, & the Secretary of State. It could not be created before 2019.

We welcome your input; there will be an online survey available to the public available shortly http://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/onecouncil. In order to merge the two councils a level of public support for the proposal must be demonstrated. No further job losses are anticipated. Associated costs with a possible merger would be recovered in the first year of a new council.

Results of the public engagement will be debated at both Full Council meetings in the coming months. Updates to follow.

Marie Curie Counts on Collection Box Volunteers Marie Curie is appealing for local volunteers to help manage the charity’s collection boxes around the area. The local Marie Curie fundraising team are seeking Collection Box Co-ordinators to help look after boxes that are on display in shops, newsagents, chemists, pubs and doctors’ surgeries and also place collection boxes in new locations.

Member of Parliament for South Suffolk In November the Houses of Parliament celebrated UK Parliament Week, an annual festival of events encouraging citizens to “engage, explore and empower�. Whilst there were a whole host of events in Westminster itself, as always for me the most important part was engaging with my constituents here in South Suffolk. In Parliament week itself I visited two South Suffolk schools, in Stoke-by-Nayland and Tattingstone, to take questions on the workings of our democracy. The questions from pupils never fail to engage. By my unscientific estimate, the two most common ones from primary school pupils are: “have you ever met the Queen?� and “how much do you earn?� The latter suggests that our youngest students may have a welcome consideration of pecuniary issues that bodes well for our future prosperity! Of course, the issue of ‘political engagement’ must be tampered with managing expectations about what one can deliver. It can be very tempting in this job to tell people simply what they want to hear, and avoid the reality of what one can actually achieve.

For example, many constituents implore me every week to engage in planning matters ranging from single properties to applications for a hundred plus new homes. In fact, planning is in most cases a matter for the district council and not an area where Parliament has direct authority. So, jumping on the bandwagon of people who are unhappy with local applications is, in my view, an opportunistic way to approach a subject that should always be tackled as objectively as possible. My focus is therefore on matters where national Government is most clearly responsible. This is particularly true of Brexit, a matter that will have a huge impact on our environment and agricultural economy. Hence, I was delighted to recently welcome Secretary of State for the Environment Michael Gove to meet 40 South Suffolk farmers at the Stoke

by Nayland hotel, to hear their concerns. This was an example of Parliamentary engagement at its best. I look forward to much more of it in the new year, and wish you all a very merry Christmas and prosperous 2018.

LEADER Rural Business Grants The LEADER programme is currently offering capital grants for rural businesses (micro – small) and organisations to support business growth and increases in productivity. Christmas Events at Hadleigh Nursing Home Hadleigh Nursing Home is extending a warm welcome to the public to join its residents and staff at a glittering line-up of Christmas events.

The build-up to the festive season will begin with a visit to the Friars Road home by Hadleigh Community Choir at 11am on December 11. Join us for a glass of mulled wine and mince pies.

On December 13, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, we will be hosting our regular coffee morning – come along to meet other townsfolk and, as its Christmas, there will be mince pies and mulled wine as well as tea and coffee.

Suffolk Photography Competition Calendar Launched in Aid of Deafness Charity The winners of a local photography competition, raising awareness about untreated hearing loss, have been rewarded with their photos being featured in 2018 charity calendar. The ‘Sounds of Suffolk’ competition was created by family run hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, who have a local clinics located in both Hadleigh and Sudbury. The competition has helped encourage those struggling with hearing loss to seek help, as well as highlighting some of the incredible sounds that can be found in and around our county.

During a prize giving presentation organised at the company’s headquarters on Upper Brook Street in Ipswich, the calendar was officially unveiled, along with a series of greeting cards which are both to be sold in the run up to Christmas. Competition winner James Stannard and second place runner up Stephen Squirrell attended the presentation, along with Brian Platt and his hearing dog Elton.

Karen Finch, The Hearing Care Centre’s managing director said “We were incredibly touched by how many people entered the competition and told us just how much they would miss their favourite sounds if they couldn’t hear. Producing this stunning calendar and beautiful cards will hopefully prolong the message of seeking help if you are struggling with your hearing”.

All sales from the calendar and cards will be donated to the company’s chosen charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Hearing dogs not only help deaf people by alerting them to sounds they would otherwise miss, but they also give a deaf person a newfound sense of independence and confidence with their loyal companion and true friend at their side.

Sudbury Rotary Club has a busy programme lined up as we approach Christmas. If you have children or grandchildren don’t forget to bring them along to see Santa in Holmes & Hill’s premises in North Street on November 24th, the night of the Christmas Lights switch-on and then in his grotto inside Sudbury Library on Market Hill on Saturday December 16th and from Wednesday December 20th to Saturday December 23rd Each child will receive a small but quality present. There will be small charge and meanwhile Santa’s elves will also be outside the library patrolling Market Hill to welcome you into the Library, collecting for local charities.

Four local primary schools are taking part in the ever-popular Schools Concert to be held on 4th December.. The Christmas Tree Festival will be in St Peters from 5th to 10th December. Don’t miss this annual festive treat. If you have never been, make a vow to come this year – as you walk into St Peters and see the 90-or-so decorated trees it is truly enchanting. At the festival we will once again have a Tree of Memories and people are invited to write a message on a card in memory of a loved one and hang it where they choose on the tree.

As part of our support for schoolchildren, Sudbury Rotary Club has been distributing Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries to local primary schools. This year we have donated 256 copies of the dictionaries among schools in Sudbury and nearby villages. This is a tradition for us and we have previously given dictionaries to a number of schools in the Sudbury area.

President Lesley Ford-Platt, and President-elect Tony visited both Pot Kiln and St Gregory Primary Schools to present the dictionaries at their recent Celebration Assemblies. It was good to see how quickly children were looking through the new books and finding words and illustrations to inspire them in their learning. In addition to supporting local children with their education, Sudbury Rotary Club also funds children in developing countries, and we are currently engaged in a three year programme of support for a boy and a girl to attend a primary school in East Meru, Tanzania, Jane Wall from Long Melford but who works at the school came to tell us more about life there. We learnt how this is somewhere a small amount of money can really change lives: a decent education is vital for all children, wherever they live. We also support street children in Bamako, Mali, where we are sponsoring a teenage boy and girl to learn skills to help them out of poverty Rotary supports both local and national/international initiatives. We are offering support mainly in kind, to the newly-formed Sudbury Community Depot and we invited a speaker to one of our weekly lunches, in November, to talk about this new venture. Later in the month we had a talk from Emma Black, the Countryside Officer for the Stour Valley Educational Network.

Recently, Mel Edwards, Tesco Community Champion, with whom we often work in partnership spoke to us about the three main community initiatives supported by the store: ‘Farm to Fork’, especially for children to learn about sources of food (though adults can take this tour too); ‘Community Food’ support where local charities and schools are given food which is nearing its ‘use by’ or ‘best before date’ – there are still two unallocated days for this

scheme, so if you know of a charity which provides food for those it helps, please ask them to get in touch with Mel. Using surplus food in this way prevents it going to landfill and Tesco plans that by the end of 2018 there will be no food waste. The third scheme is ‘Bags of Help’ where the 5p paid for disposable carrier bags has amounted to as much as £30,000 in eight months and has been donated to charitable projects in the Halstead and Sudbury areas. This is another scheme where Mel invites local charities to apply to be beneficiaries for the four-monthly share of whatever is raised, so if you have links with any local charities which could benefit, please tell them about this scheme.

One of the Club’s joint projects with Tesco and the Town Council is, of course, the regular litter collections from around the store. The final one for this year will take place on Saturday 9 December starting at 10 a.m. at Tesco, and ending by 12 noon with refreshments provided by Mel and her team For many years Rotary worldwide has been engaged in a project to eliminate polio from developing countries with a programme of vaccination. So successful has this project been that there are now very few cases of polio in children, just in one or two countries. In order to totally eradicate polio the programme of vaccination needs to continue for several more years, and one way of raising funds is, perhaps surprisingly, planting purple crocuses!

Individual clubs purchase the crocus bulbs each year and the funds raised go towards buying the polio vaccine.

Last Spring, residents in Sudbury may have noticed beds of purple crocuses in and around the town, especially in Siam Gardens and along the Melford Road.

A total of 5,000 crocus corms were distributed and planted last year and this year, again, Sudbury Rotary Club has bought and arranged for planting of another 5,000 purple crocuses. These have been distributed to local schools and organisations and among Rotary members. The final 1600 bulbs were planted in the greensward along Melford Road by a team of Rotary volunteers in early November.

As part of the Purple for Polio campaign this year, Sudbury Rotary members collected a kilometre of cash at the Tesco store on October 29, and raised £300 towards buying vaccine. Some members who bought jars of plum jam to support the campaign are now busy filling the empty jars with spare coins to add to the sums being collected The reason for the colour purple is simple: when a child is vaccinated, their index finger is dipped into purple dye – this is called having a ‘purple pinkie’!

Suffolk County Council launches consultation on proposed sand and gravel sites Communities are being invited to have their say on proposed sand and gravel quarrying sites as part of a six-week consultation held by Suffolk County Council. Suffolk County Council, as a minerals and waste planning authority, is required as part of the planning framework to make a provision for sand and gravel supplies, based largely on the average of sales over the previous 10 years, which is 1.158 million tonnes per year.

Once the Plan has been adopted by the county council as policy quarrying companies will still need to submit a planning application to the county council to extract materials. Companies will also pay landowners to dig up the materials on their fields – before selling it to construction companies. This work is likely to create additional employment in the area.

Only one site for waste development has been allocated, at Sizewell A, for the treatment and temporary storage of radioactive material removed as part of decommissioning from Sizewell and other decommissioning stations.

Currently Sizewell A is already benefitting from exporting waste to Bradwell Nuclear Power Station in Essex for treatment and temporary storage. While there are no current proposals to share the facilities in Sizewell, it is considered sensible to have policies in place if such a proposal is put forward in future. Suffolk Social worker Karen Stock nominated for National Adoption week award A Social Worker from Suffolk has been selected as a finalist at the First4Adoption National Adoption Week 2017 Awards. Karen Stock of Suffolk County Council’s Adoption and Fostering service has been nominated for the ‘Adoption Social Worker of the Year’ award. Karen is one of 24 finalists across 6 categories and will find out whether she has won at an award ceremony taking place in London next week.

Home to School Transport - Workshops announced In September, the LDGI Group successfully “called-in” the Cabinet’s decision to go to consultation on changes to the Home to School Transport policy. We questioned the nature of the pre-consultation period, and argued that more research needed to be done. The Scrutiny Committee agreed with us, and voted to refer the decision back to Cabinet for further consideration. It has not yet been announced when Cabinet will reconsider the proposals.

Suffolk County Council has announced that two workshops will be taking place next month, to further discuss the challenge and help develop proposals for Cabinet to consider. However, invitations will only be sent to 80 randomly selected representatives. We should show compassion to Politicians without letting them stand for political office.

The majority have now conveniently forgotten the ongoing public Contaminated Blood scandal. This government backed scheme to condemn thousands of innocent people to death and injustice by supplying them with imported American blood is one of the more barefaced examples of government ineptitude of modern times. In the 1970s and 80s the misnamed Department of Health imported blood products sourced from the drug addicted inmates of American prisons and injected same into British patients. Some 2,400 haemophiliacs have died to date as a result with thousands of others still suffering. Not to mention the resultant pain and financial distress to their families. It required years of campaigning from Labour MPs Diana Johnson and Andy Johnson to finally force a Commons debate this year. Why so long you may ask? Obviously the more victims that have passed away the less compensation required but of more concern, is as the majority of those officials responsible for the purchase of the tainted blood will by now have retired into well pensioned anonymity therefore making it more difficult for the Police to call them to account. It must be obvious to everybody we elect that purchasing tainted blood derived from addicts and gangsters is somewhat risky. So who authorised same and will prosecutions follow? Don’t hold one’s breath!

My daily rag informs me that some five million people will be stuck on waiting lists as a result of an underfunded NHS. Rubbish, it ain’t underfunded, it is completely mismanaged. You do not seek to shore up a failing concern by throwing more money at it. The first rule of the private sector. The financial incompetence of the public sector and its managers is a national scandal.

Here, in our rural idyll examples abound. Two excellent hospitals are sold to developers and replaced with an out of town clinic. People’s Park, seemingly the site of a new hospital and once a public asset, now covered in housing.

Our compliant local politicians gave the so called local Health Trust carte blanch to destroy OUR heritage. Bed blocking at Bury hospital could simply be solved by the erection of suitable “half way” accommodation with a thirty bed unit adjacent to Sudbury’s clinic on land we already own. The cost of a blocked bed some £3000 a week, the cost of care in such a unit some £900. It’s a no brainer, but doubtless the said land will undoubtedly be flogged to a developer to meet any shortfall in the public sector pension pot.

Those same inept nitwits cannot even be trusted with purchasing powers.

Jeremy Hunt has recently stated that the “poorly funded” NHS could save up to £1billion a year by astute purchasing. So why is one Trust paying 35p and another £16.47 for a pack of gloves or £3,669 for a stethoscope whilst another just £761. If Inspector Knacker of the yard can’t smell a rat this old boy can. If the officers concerned are incompetent, they should be sacked as such, but in the public sector, Never!

Now it appears that there exists a group called Hasbara Trolls. This rather shadowy gang, some salaried, some volunteers, whose sole purpose it is to disparage any public critic of the State of Israel. Apparently any criticism of the illegal occupation of Palestine or actions of the Israeli Army brings one to the attention of this group. Skilled in manipulation and misinformation any such critic becomes a target of this state sponsored body. America has steadfastly blocked any UN action against Israeli oppression thus fuelling anti-western militants and terrorism. Obviously the Israelis have learnt much regarding the manipulation of Congress from Irish republicans. We now discover that a British Minister, one Priti Patel, has been demoted after holding secret talks with that discredited regime. But are we gullible enough to believe she was acting on her own initiative or was actually sacked as a sacrificial lamb having been caught in the act? Whatever, I personally don’t give a fig, but I will miss her presence in the Reptile House. So much a comely apparition in comparison with some of her colleagues! However, some gain in attraction in relation to the amount of Guinness or Claret that one has consumed, so off for a jar!

Four trustees, Ken Mazdon, Alan Vince, Geoff Challacombe and Andy Dodds have relinquished their positions as the membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; club has moved to incorporated status. Directors now take over the responsibilities of the trustees, and chairman Peter Philpott presented inscribed glass bowls to the long-serving trustees. In reviewing the year, he said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Newton Green is in a very strong position, both in respect to its playing standards and facilities. In recent times the club has invested heavily in the course, which has resulted in a significant increase in visitors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;On top of this, the last few months have seen us ploughing in around ÂŁ90,000 to completely refurbish the bar and dining areas, as well as transforming the road network with block paving, landscaping and re-organising parking arrangementsâ&#x20AC;?. The evening of celebration also included marking the juniors becoming Suffolk team champions for the third year, as well as winning the team award at the county junior stroke play final. They went on to finish sixth out of 30 teams in the national club final.

When David Hunter was Captain of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club in 1997 his charity was Guide Dogs for the Blind and for every year since the members have competed for the Hunter Guide Dog Trophy. There was a very good entry, including David who played with the Ladies Vice Richard Cross, David Hunter, Captain Elaine Davidson. The Mandy Byham and Don Wiggins winners of the trophy, with 40 points, were Richard Cross and Mandy Byham just one point ahead of the runners up Michael Isom and Roz Clements.

The Senior Section was the first one to hold its AGM and this is followed by their drive in, one week later.

Norman Davidson, the retiring captain, handed over the reins to John Wheatley as Seniors Captain and Ian Bickers as Vice Captain. It had been a very successful year for Norman, and the Senior members, which included a full programme of inter club matches, monthly competitions as well as summer and winter knock outs. All prize winners were presented with their trophies at the AGM. Multiple winner Graham Vandervord crowned his day with a Hole in One on the 3rd Gainsborough in the Three Captains competition. Norman also announced that he had reached his target of ÂŁ5000 for his charity which was the Kingswode Hoe School in Colchester. This money will be put towards the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s science room project.

At the Junior AGM it was confirmed Matthew Thompson will be succeeded by Max Toombs as Captain with Harry English his Vice Captain. Again trophies were presented to all the competition winners.

At the Club AGM it was announced that the long serving Jonathan Loshak would be retiring from his post as Honorary President and he was presented with a memento by Club Captain Don Wiggins. He was thanked for all his hard work for the club over many years. Don reported on his own very successful year and the fact that he had surpassed his ÂŁ4000 target raised for Prostate Cancer. Any funds over this target will be spent on the members in the form of coaching clinics. Don also presented all the trophies. A resolution was also passed to include the President in the club constitution and to create a Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Section. This was passed by the meeting and the Men will now hold their own AGM on the 8th December to elect their committee. The new Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Captain is Alan Line and his Vice Captain John Sandford. Lesley Garnett is the new President. The next morning saw all the Captains driving in after joining the members for breakfast. Both courses, Gainsborough and Constable, were used for the shotgun competition, with over 160 players taking part.
