‘Abi’s Footprints’ finds a new home ‘Abi’s Footprints’ is a community initiative run by New Life Church, Great Cornard, supporting lone parents and families struggling in difficult circumstances to meet the practical needs of a new baby or young child up to the age of three. Thanks to the generosity of many donors we are able to supply a wide range of good second-hand goods, supplemented by new items such as baby toiletries, mattresses, and occasionally bedding or specific clothing. Since launching the project in March 2017 we have responded to 45 requests, providing a total of 124 gifts ranging from complete Moses Basket starter packs and clothing bundles, to buggies, cots and stairgates. The project has developed steadily over the last year, fast outgrowing its initial ‘lock-up’ storage facility.

A year on from its launch, ‘Abi’s Footprints’ recently relocated to the Stour Valley Business Centre, Brundon Lane, Sudbury where a committed team of volunteers enjoys the much-improved facilities for sorting, storing and preparing gifts ready for distribution. Donations help ramp up St Peter’s regeneration efforts Steps have been taken to enable wheelchair users and parents with buggies to access St Peter’s in Sudbury town centre more easily. A new £900, permanent graded slope has been built at the main entrance to the cultural venue, thanks to donations from Sudbury Rotary Club and County Councillor Jack Owen who provided funds from his locality budget.

Visitors to the landmark building on Market Hill will now find a seamless entrance integrated with the existing paving slabs whereas previously a heavy removable wooden L-R: Peter Gray, chair of the Friends of ramp was used.

Councillor Owen said: ‘I am delighted to help out St Peter’s to provide the much needed ramp for the disabled and young mothers. It was important to make the building more accessible for everyone as the venue becomes busier.’ Chair of the Friends of St Peter’s, Peter Gray, said: “We are delighted that this simple, elegant solution is finally in place as we strive to make St Peter’s more open and accessible to all.” “The Friends of St Peter's offer their thanks to Sudbury Rotary Club and Councillor Owen for their generous support of this project and the wider regeneration project for our venue.”

St Peter’s regeneration project has seen several positive adjustments made to the role of the former church within Sudbury town centre, including a broadening in the variety of events it hosts.

A number of music, theatre and poetry performances are planned for the coming months including a free music festival on Saturday April 21st, and a performance by American roots musician Marty O'Reilly April 27th. Other shows heading for St Peter’s include popular tribute band T-Rextasy, and award-winning poet Luke Wright on June 29th.

Coinciding with a rebrand of its identity supported by local marketing agency Mackman, St Peter’s is also awaiting news of the success of an application for a £1.8million Heritage Lottery Fund grant. If awarded, the grant would kick start a fundraising effort to complete planned improvements, including the provision of toilets and a kitchen area within the building, as well as upgrades to the structure of the Grade 1 listed landmark.

Acton Garden Club Thursday 12th April: 'Rare, unusual and beautiful shrubs' is the subject of a presentation by Jim Paine at this meeting. The club meets on the second Thursday of each month in Acton Village Hall at 7:30pm. Visitors (£3 per meeting) and new members (£13 per year + £1 per meeting) are always welcome. River Stour Trust 50 years of Preserving the Stour For You 2018 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the River Stour Trust. The Trust was formed in 1968 to fight the proposed closure of navigation on this historic river that was first granted by an Act of 1705.

A public right of navigation remains today and is administered by the Environment Agency. However, many of the locks have disappeared and through navigation from Brundon Mill, upstream of Sudbury in Suffolk, to the sea at Brantham in Essex (a distance of approximately 25 miles) is only achievable by lighter craft such as canoes and kayaks.

For 50 years the Trust has worked tirelessly to preserve the Stour for you. It has successfully completed a number of successful projects, including: • restoring/re-building four of the river’s original 13 locks (Great Cornard Lock was the first new lock on the river for over 200 years and Stratford St Mary Lock will mark the culmination of over 10 years back-breaking work!) • restoring the historic, riverside Granary building at Sudbury which hosts a variety of functions including weddings and the Trust’s Tea Room; • building a Visitor Education Centre at Cornard which facilitates educational activities about the river’s history, present and future; • securing public access points and slipways along the whole 25-mile length of the river; • unearthing an original 19th Century Stour barges from Ballingdon Cut which has been fully restored (with funding from Heritage Lottery Fund) to be enjoyed by future generations; • acquiring equipment and training to undertake weedcutting on the river to collect and remove weed that would otherwise restrict river users.

The Trust’s dedicated team of volunteers organise public events every year such as the annual Sudbury to the Sea canoeing event which attracts over 500 entrants from all over the world! The trip boats at Sudbury, Dedham and Flatford carry thousands of people every year who come to visit Constable Country and see the locations of his most famous masterpieces.

In a strange quirk of fate, the Trust has discovered that TV and screen star Barbara Windsor comes from a family that lived in Bures and was engaged in brick-making, one of the original cargoes carried by barges on the river to build such London landmarks as the Royal Albert Hall. And in fact, more astonishingly she is distantly related to Constable himself, through her maternal great great great grandfather Golding Deeks, and it is hoped that Dame Barbara could take part in some of the celebrations.

In 2018 there will be many events celebrating the 50th Anniversary and the Trust is delighted to be a part of the inaugural year of the River Stour Festival.

This will celebrate the river, its culture, surrounding landscape and people throughout 2018.

This river has a long history which we hope you will help us preserve. We could not exist without our members and supporters. It’s our Stour so let’s make sure we enjoy it for years to come!

During April we have one of the highlights of our Rotary year when we run “Crucial Crew” when we offer children from local schools the opportunity to learn how to keep safe in various reallife situation simulations. Once again we expect over 700 children to attend; as ever we are grateful to our many friends and the organisations who help us with this event and of course to the schools and their teachers who bring the children along. Crucial Crew started eighteen years ago as a way of helping young children aged between 9 and 11 to understand the dangers of everyday life. Amongst the comments we have received in the past are: “Crucial Crew gives children first hand experience and knowledge they require in difficult situations” “.more valuable than anything we could teach in the classroom." and "The scenarios provide a safe environment to enable the children to consider their actions in situations that would affect their personal safety ....”An opportunity to learn valuable life skills."

Currently Sudbury Rotary Club is supporting two local charities: Compassion, supporting victims of domestic violence, and Kernos, the local counselling centre. We are also supporting two international charities: East Meru Community School in Maruvango in Northern Tanzania; we already sponsor one child – a 7-year old boy and we are now also sponsoring a 5-year old girl for three years of her primary education We are also supporting the Mali Development Group which has been supporting development work in Mali, West Africa since 2000. It is a volunteer led organisation, and relies exclusively on the skills and commitment of its members. Since its foundation MDG has raised £1.25 million. It has a number of members in Sudbury who have supported its activities through events, information sharing and fundraising. One of MDGs projects is with its partner, ‘Pensons a Demain’ (PAD) (Let’s think about tomorrow) based in Bamako, Mali’s capital city, which works with very disadvantaged children , most of them homeless and destitute. The founder is Kader Keita, himself disabled from childhood, but a highly regarded artist. His mission in life has been to provide a place for the children to stay and be rehabilitated. The special quality of the centre is that it uses art as a therapeutic medium, especially the classic Malian art form of Bogolan- making pictures on cotton cloth with the black mud from the Niger which flows through the city. The images are fixed with a mixture of natural herbs and the result can be stunning designs. The children learn about bogolan, but also take part in dance, drama and singing. In this way they grow into their own culture while also receiving health care, nourishment and reentry to formal education. Over 100 children are helped each year and many other organisations come to learn about this highly child centred approach to the problem of street children- Kader does not like the term- he says streets don’t have children, only people!

Sudbury Rotary Club has been supporting PAD with funding for two places a year and we believe that this is making an important difference to this project.

We are also working to set up a partnership with the Bamako Rotary Club so that there is support for PAD from both clubs and an international relationship between the two clubs, in the true spirit of Rotary.

We are planning an auction of gifts and promises to help raise funds for our charities. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk There is no doubt in my mind that recent weeks have seen an acceleration in what might be termed ‘speculative applications’ for permission to build new homes in Babergh. I have had emails from constituents worried about applications in Belstead, Capel St Mary, Long Melford, Elmsett, Chelmondiston and my own village of Assington. The reason is that our district of Babergh is deemed not to have a ‘five year land supply’, i.e. is not building enough homes. As such, whilst Babergh is still the planning authority, it has to give more weight to national planning policy than local priorities. This in turn attracts developers thinking that even if their application is rejected by Babergh, they have more chance on appeal.

In fact, the average number of new homes built in Babergh in the last five years is 213. In every year since 2001 prior to the last five years we built more than 213 homes a year, at an average of just under 300, including 537 in 2002.

Of course, many constituents have rightly argued to me that whilst our buildout rate is low, the number of permissions granted is far higher. I understand in Babergh there are around 2,000 permissions awaiting development to start compared to fewer than 200 where it is underway. It understandably irks those communities who go through the pain barrier of seeing controversial permissions granted, only for nothing to happen; and many have said, ‘James, they shouldn’t allow this latest application until the others have started’. Fair point.

In my view, nationally we need to urgently find a way to get builders building – in the Housing Secretary’s recent statement I proposed financial penalties on developers who fail to deliver on their permissions. Locally, communities concerned about development need to bring forward a Neighbourhood Plan that allocates sites for development at a sustainable level, giving greater certainty to communities, and – crucially – more control over where exactly in their back yard housing is sited. I wholeheartedly oppose unsustainable development, particularly in the countryside. But I do believe we can find a better way forward than the current mad dash for plots that may never be built.

On Friday 23rd February, The Delphi Centre had a visit from Sudbury Town Mayor Sarah Page and District Councillor Colin Spence to view the improvements that have been made to the Centre since it has been run by the Not For Profit group. Both were very impressed and had only positive comments on the improvements. The ballroom had been prepared for the country and western night run by Berny Mead of the Suffolk Outlaws and a number of event and group organisers had stalls to explain to visitors their activities. The Delphi Club when completed and opened in September 1965 for CAV Lucas was the go to place for the workers of the factory. Now in 2018 the centre is attracting more and more local residents from Sudbury and surrounding villages; increased bookings for wedding receptions, wakes, birthday parties, Tribute shows, Big Band Dance nights has significantly increased the numbers visiting the Centre. With its fabulous sprung dance floor and stage The Delphi Centre has a lot to offer both during the week and at weekends. The new web site www.delphi-centre.co.uk gives details of some great events booked for the coming months.

A number of the groups and event organisers raise funds for charities such as E.A.C.H, UPBEAT, and Success after Stroke, & St Nicholas Hospice Care.

Regular activities held at the Centre include Charity Tea Dances every two weeks on a Wednesday, fitness classes and dance classes for Swing Jive, Ballroom, Latin, and sequence all these are really good social gatherings and keep you fit for all details go to the web site. No prizes for guessing who’s been out recently.

Our little ambassador came home full of himself again after attending our Gift and Craft Fair at Whatfield last month. We received another warm welcome from the village and raised ÂŁ860 for the animals. Kenny met lots of people who enjoyed the event including SESAW rescue dog, Billy the Whippet/Jack Russell cross with his new Foster family. This fifteen year old canine gentleman is finally getting all the love, walks and TLC a dog could desire. You can give and receive so much happiness when taking an older dog into your home. It may not be for as long as you would wish but it makes all the difference while it lasts, to you and them.

Turning to the superior species, we have ex feral cats desperately looking for jobs as vermin exterminators. They need a warm place to sleep and a regular supply of food, a fit and able cat will work more efficiently that weak poorly cats. Mother says we can advise how to introduce working cats to your environment and support you should they become ill.

They have always been admired for the exhilarating drive and energy of their fugal fast movements and the lyricism of their adagios. Steven Devine also plays Bach’s scintillating Italian Concerto and the rarely performed Aria variata all maniera Italiana BWV 989, a youthful anticipation of the Goldberg Variations.

Margaret Faultless is one Britain’s most distinguished and sought-after violinists specialising in period performance. She is co-leader of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Head of Historical Performance at the Royal Academy and Director of Studies for the European Union Baroque Orchestra.

Steven Devine is the leading British harpsichordist of his generation, and performs regularly at the Festival. He plays a copy by Colin Booth of a harpsichord made by J.C. Fleischer of Hamburg in 1710, the sort of instrument used by the Bach family.

Sudbury Choral Society goes back to their roots this spring with a performance of “The Creation” by Haydn. This tour-de-force of the choral repertoire depicts the creation of the world from an opening orchestral introduction depicting utter chaos to some of Haydn’s most wonderful arias and choruses. We are very fortunate to have “local boy” Mark Saberton back with us for this performance. He has been a regular soloist with the society over the years and it is great that he has been able to fit us into his busy schedule for this concert. Mark has performed with many of the leading opera companies in the country including Royal Opera, English National Opera, Opera North, Raymond Gubbay and Scottish Opera to name but a few.

For many of the vulnerable people we deliver hot meals to, the visit from our delivery volunteers is the only human contact they will have all day, and during extremes of weather this is especially true. We are proud to say that last month’s snowy weather was no barrier for our hot meal delivery volunteers.

Thanks to their perseverance and dedication, we thwarted the “Beast from the East” and successfully made every single hot meal delivery.

From Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) our hot meal delivery service travels to residents across the local area including, Sudbury, Great Cornard, Long Melford, Acton and Great Waldingfield. Serving hearty, homemade meals and lighter snacks, our delivery service is perfect for those recovering from illness, injury or surgery, or those unable to make themselves a nutritious meal.

News From Sudbury Library The Friends of Sudbury Library are a group promoting the use of all the facilities in the Library After a stringent restructuring in our Library, it is even more important that the Community support the Library in its wonderful building. A magical evening was held for all Harry Potter fans on Friday 9th February, about 60 children of all ages partook of all the crafts and excitements on offer and didn't really want to go home, many thanks to the parents, grandparents and Friends who turned out on such a miserable evening, On the following Saturday there was a Harry Potter quiz, not so well attended but great fun for those of us that were there. The latest venture is a Sporting Memories Group for the over 50s,an opportunity to recall great sporting occasions in the past and make new friends.

The well established sessions continue Bookstart and Stay and Play for the pre-school children.Toptime a group for the over 55s with a varied and interesting programme.There is a book group, a Sundays Kid's Club and more, why not call in the Library and see what is on offer. Taking children on holiday following separation If you are like me, the snow and cold snaps we had in March drove you to begin thinking about a summer holiday. Whilst a holiday is a fun adventure for a family who live together, where the parents have separated there are additional issues which the parents will need to consider.

Obtaining consent If you are planning a trip abroad with your child/children who are aged under 16 then you must obtain permission from every person who has Parental Responsibility for the child/children who you wish to take on holiday. If you fail to obtain consent then you may be accused of Child Abduction. A letter from the person with Parental responsibility may be sufficient but it is always appropriate to check with your travel company whether they have any specific requirements, especially if visas are required for part of the trip. If your surname is different from your child then it would also be sensible to ensure that you travel with documentation to confirm your relationship with the child i.e. the child’s birth certificate. Also, if as a result of a divorce you have a different surname from your child, consider taking your Decree Absolute or a certified copy as evidence.

If a Child Arrangements Order is already in place concerning the child/children then the parent in whose favour the order has been made may take the children abroad for 28 days without first having to obtain permission unless the court order states otherwise. Even if consent is not required it would be advisable to notify the other parent of your plans.

What if the other parent won't provide their consent? If the other parent with Parental responsibility is unwilling to provide their consent then it will be necessary to make an application to the local family court for a Specific Issue Order for permission to take the child abroad. Before you make the application you will need to attempt mediation. You will need to ensure that you make this application well in advance of your trip as it may take several months for the court to determine the application. There may also be issues if the parent who wishes to travel overseas is not in possession of the child's passport.

Again , if the parent in possession of the passport refuses to hand the passport to the other parent then an order will be needed from the Family Court for the passports to be delivered to the other parent.

There are several issues that need be considered in advance of booking the trip.

Sudbury & District The Royal British Legion Remembrance Services, visits to Schools including the Ormiston Festival of Remembrance together with all the Supermarket Collections and Town Collections House to House and donations have amounted to ÂŁ48.002.00 which is now more than last years final total. The year ends 30th September 2018 so we still have more time for donations. Truly another wonderful effort from everyone.

Our Speaker for 9th April will be Mr Karl Lumbers talking about the Lifeboats and the R.N.L.I. This is an open night for anyone to come along to the Snooker Club where we meet starting at 7.30 p.m. The next Speaker and Open night will be 11th June when Sean Hedges talk is entitled ‘Bronze Busts’.

2018 is an important and busy year being the Commemoration of 100 years since the end of WW1. Branches are busy preparing various projects and Services and at Sudbury as well as the Ormiston Festival of Remembrance on 16th October we shall be returning there for a Schools Commemoration Concert on 22nd November being that all our local Schools have committed to attend doing their own various song/dance/readings etc. Tickets for both nights will be ÂŁ5 each including refreshments during the interval for both nights. Ormiston will be selling tickets together with the Tourist Information in the Library as well as from ourselves nearer the dates.

On Thursday November 8th Branches throughout Suffolk have been tasked with laying crosses on all the WW1 Graves and our Branch will be doing this at Sudbury, Gt Cornard, Lt Cornard, Newton and Gt Waldingfield Church yards. This to be done simultaneously at 11.00 a.m. again involving the local School Children. There will also be a WW1 Display in the Heritage Centre during the two week period of Remembrance being 27th October through to Remembrance Sunday on 11th November.

To round off these Commemorations a special Dinner has been arranged at The Bull Hotel Long Melford for Saturday 24th November starting at 6.45 sit down and being served 7.00 p.m. Tickets will be ÂŁ30 to include WW1/WW11 Music and entertainment plus Port for the Toast. A Grand Raffle is also planned and we would be grateful for donations of prizes which can be given to Dean Scott or Chris Fisher or ourselves.

The British Legion is working with the Town Hall who require knitted Poppies which will be cascaded down from St Peters Church and should be spectacular! If you or you know anyone who would be prepared to knit Poppies please call at the Town Hall for the patterns and return all Poppies back to the Town Hall by October 1st. Our meetings are held on the second Monday of the month in the Snooker Club North St Sudbury 7.00 for 7.30 p.m. start.

Membership is open to anyone you do not have to have served in the Forces.

Representatives of a golf club that raised £8,000 toward the training of a dog have witnessed the moving passing out ceremony of the animal.

It was four years ago that captains at Newton Green Golf Club led the raising of the money for the Canine Partners charity. Now, black Labrador Trent has settled in as an inspirational friend and support to wheel chair restricted Robert Davies, of Wales, and was one of seven dogs honoured in a passing out ceremony held in Leicestershire.

Present were former golf club captain, Andrew Johnson, and his wife Lizzie, who is the recently elected ladies captain at Newton.

Andrew explained: "Initially, a puppy spends around 12 months being socialised by a puppy parent in their own home. Then it goes to the charity headquarters for about five months of advanced training, during which time it will be matched with Andrew Johnson, Robert Davies someone on the charity's waiting list and Lizzie Johnson with Trent and trained to their needs.

“The dog then goes home with their partner and the charity's aftercare department make regular visits to help with the settling in process. Once the partnership has settled a passing out ceremony is arranged.

“Following his serious illness, Trent’s new owner had reached a desperate situation and did not go out to speak to people. He is now so pleased, as the dog has made him a different person. His wife Sarah is also incredibly grateful.

The dog has transformed their lives and was very moving to hear this.”

Along with Andrew, Newton’s women’s captain Sue Thurgate and seniors captain Mike Norton led the fund raising at the club.

Kernos Centre Charity Quiz Night Success The night of Saturday 24th February saw Long Melford Village Hall crammed with nearly 140 contestants participating in the Kernos Centre’s 11th annual Quiz Night.

Organisers and volunteer fundraisers at the Centre had galvanised their many friends and supporters to make this Kernos Quiz Night the most successful yet, raising ÂŁ1,732 for the Sudbury-based counselling charity.

Chris Boatwright, Clinical Director of Kernos, said: "The money raised by this annual event means a tremendous amount to us – it allows us to continue to provide much needed counselling to people in our community. A huge thank you to staff and friends of Kernos who worked so tirelessly to make this an exceptional evening.�

Administrator, Annabel Wyatt said, “A special thanks must go to Chris Helliwell, the Quiz Master of the Cock & Bell in Long Melford, who has once again donated his time, expertise and great sense of humour as Master of Ceremonies at no cost. He really made the evening into a wonderful fun event, providing a testing selection of great quiz questions.�

Among those supporting Kernos on Saturday were Sudbury Town Mayor, Sarah Page; Sue Ayres, Deputy Town Mayor, and South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge. The winning team included Kernos volunteers Linda and Peter Kievenaar alongside James Cartlidge and his wife Emily, who generously agreed to donate their £80 winners’ prize back into the funds raised.

James Cartlidge Is an ardent supporter of the Centre’s work and a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Mental Health. Town Mayor Sarah Page has chosen Kernos Centre as one of the charities she is supporting during her term of office.

SDS Ladies Down Under From Ascot To Australia Sudbury Dramatic Society had a huge success with their March 2017 production of Ladies Day by Amanda Whittington, the funny and poignant story of four friends who attend Ladies Day at Royal Ascot races and find themselves winning a six figure sum.

A Public Meeting will be held on Wednesday 25th April at All Saints Church Hall in Church Street, Sudbury commencing at 7.00pm. This meeting has been called at the behest of Councillor Luke Cresswell to fully debate the proposed, but seemingly ongoing, merger of Babergh and South Suffolk Councils. All interested parties have been invited to attend and have been granted sufficient time to present their case including those against (Labour, Independents and those Tory councillors who have resigned the whip) and of course those who are in favour of and see benefits in the merger. All townspeople have been invited and, time permitting, will have their say.

Previously I chaired a like meeting in the town which, due to overwhelming public concern, the proposed move of the bus station to Girling Street car park was scrapped.

Democracy can win the day if enough townspeople can attend and voice their support or objections. I will again chair this meeting and Councillors can be assured that I will, as previously, do so in a truly independent manner. Should Babergh DC choose not to be represented not only are they denying their supporters a public platform but also treating those that elected them with disdain. As stated, I assure all parties an opportunity to state their case, after all, it’s called Democracy!

It seems however that the merger has already taken place. How can our leaders deny so when both authorities have paid tribute to their staff for jointly gaining two public sector awards? Apparently they won silver in the Council of the Year category at the 2018 Public Sector Transformation Awards and also in the “Working Together” category. All this, and I quote Chairman Nick Gowrley of Mid Suffolk DC “These awards are testament to the hard work of our staff”. Surely this cannot be the case when councillors assure us that the said merger has yet to be implemented. Puzzled?? Well I am!

For sheer hypocrisy a recent statement issued by Suffolk CC surely takes the proverbial biscuit. The highways department states “it has declared war on potholes” after reports of them doubling year on year. Talk about stating the bloody obvious! As expected the recent bad weather has been blamed and Jane Storey, cabinet member for transport, highways and rural matters (they do love a title) reported that now their “dedicated” teams no longer have to concentrate on snow clearance and gritting they can prioritise assessing pothole defects. So what the hell have they and their contractors been doing for the past two years? It is surely time that our elected councillors got to grips with this matter. The vehicle repair costs repaid by the authority, the appalling state of our highways, and the seemingly ineptitude of the appointed contractors is a disgrace and should be the subject of a full public enquiry.

Now for sheer short term thinking and greed our mis-named Health Trust take the biscuit. Their lack of foresight is unbelievable. Adjacent to Sudbury’s clinic, erected as a sop to the town for selling off two perfectly adequate hospitals for financial gain they are eyeing the surplus land adjacent to said clinic for further housing development. The ideal site for a respite bed unit (cost about £900 a week) to alleviate blocked beds in our neighbouring hospitals (cost about £3000 a week). Also with our compliant councillors agreeing to massive housing development in the area, the absolute need for enlarged clinical facilities must be obvious to all but the clinically insane.

I appreciate that Nigel Bennett and councillors of all persuasions have railed against the sale of this land, so surely, as our democratically elected representatives, they must have some control over this rapacious seemingly all powerful authority. And if not, why are they not demanding of their respective parties the right to so govern?

I have just learnt (I lead a somewhat sheltered life) that every Commons session begins with prayers. Well I suppose that this gives the incumbents of the Reptile House the opportunity to beg for divine guidance before processing to govern our fair land. Well, it just ain’t working. Christ’s clearing of the Temples of money changers, cattle and the corrupt comes to mind. The same politicians who vote for arms trade with despots, massive salaries and expenses for themselves and the ruination of our public services should feel themselves shamed to kneel before God. But what do they know of shame?
