Sunday 6th October – 2pm in the Ansell Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh A charity auction of celebrity autographed Christmas cards, postcards, photos, books and other items donated by the celebrities to raise money for The Christmas Present Trust, bringing a traditional meal and entertainment to anyone in Hadleigh or surrounding villages who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family or friends on Christmas Day. We will be providing tea, coffee and maybe even a glass of wine, as well as around 80 separate lots including Geri, Mel B, Mel C and Emma! One of the wonderful attributes of Hadleigh is the number of volunteers who support its many community groups, and none more so than those who regularly volunteer at AMC. Whether it is putting out and laying tables, meeting and greeting, running activities, washing up, playing games or being a listening ear, the café couldn’t function without them.

There are others who come regularly, but less frequently, to entertain our members with music and a sing-a-long, and we mustn’t forget one of our members who runs a weekly raffle which enables us to buy games equipment and plan excursions. So, a BIG THANK YOU to you all. If you have time to spare on a Thursday and would like to get involved just come along to the Ansell Centre between 11-3, or contact Sue on 07941 497927. Partridge’s of Hadleigh - a shop full of intrigue An exhibition on the fascinating history of Partridge’s shop in Hadleigh will be displayed in The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh, on Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th October, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.

Mounted by Hadleigh Archives Group of the Town Council, it charts nearly 200 years of trading on the same site. Mention Hadleigh to anyone who has been to this Suffolk market town and they will invariably say something along the lines of: “Ah, Partridge’s, what a wonderful shop”. It has built its reputation as the sort of place where a person can go in and buy anything from a single lost nut, to a lawnmower or a teapot.

In fact, it started off as an ironmongers in 1819 when the then owner, Thomas Pritty, “Respectfully informs the inhabitants of Hadleigh and the Public in general” that he had commenced business as an ironmonger, but selling china, glass, earthenware, as well as “goods of every description”. That pretty well sums up the range of products today.

Over the centuries the business changed hands several times and grew to be a major supplier of agricultural implements ranging from Ransome’s ploughs to combine harvesters. At one time its foundry, the manufacturing section, employed no less than 15 men and boys.

Interestingly, the owner was targeted as a wealthy man. On 27th October 1838 the Ipswich Journal A group of Partridge’s employees believed reported a daring highway to be taken in the 1960s. Identification of robbery a mile out of these individuals will be welcomed Hadleigh, during which Mr Pritty was stopped by “two foot-pads” who knocked the lamps on his fourwheel chaise to pieces and robbed him of a silver watch and £3-£4 of gold and silver while holding him down with a strong neckerchief.

Another tale involved the “dreadful murder” of a shoemaker and corn chandler who lived in two cottages, 3 & 5 George Street, later becoming part of Partridge’s retailing area. He was shot with a musket by a neighbour, while locking up his storage premises at night. The neighbour, Edward Offord, 65 and retired, once a sergeant in the Suffolk Militia, then tried to take his own life by slashing his throat. However, he was apprehended, sewn up, and subsequently faced trial where he was found guilty, but insane.

Few people will know about this grizzly crime while browsing through the household and gardening sections of the delightfully timbered building!

The owners, having moved away, the future of M W Partridge & Co is yet to be determined.

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 54 (October - September 2019) This issue welcomes back Jane Richardson, The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian who lives in France. You may recall reading October - November 2019 Price ÂŁ4 the series about her childhood memories of Issue 54 Hadleigh during the 1950s. Now she has used notes left by her late father Colin Bull to relate ‘Hadleigh Urban District Council and local government reorganisation in 1974’. Not only was Colin a chemist with a busy shop in High Street but also a Hadleigh Urban District councillor and then on Hadleigh Town Council. In fact, he was the first mayor of the town in modern times, Hadleigh having had mayors when a borough during the 17th century. Jane explains processes and problems in 1974 and why Hadleigh was chosen for the location of Babergh District Council’s headquarters. Before offices were opened in Bridge Street, everything was very make-shift with departments housed temporarily throughout the town wherever suitable accommodation could be had. For example, I remember the finance department housed in a mobile unit on a piece of rough ground on the east side of Magdalen Road, where there was no door mat after visitors had overcome a sea of mud!

Having already given outline histories concerning four of the five manors that held jurisdiction over Hadleigh, now the story of the Manor of Hadleigh is told including ownership of rights and occupancy of the manorial residence.

Starting in Anglo-Saxon times, leading the home team at the Battle of Maldon in 991 was Byrhtnoth, whose many titles included lord of the manor of Hadleigh. Don’t forget the book recently published, Medieval Hadleigh: the chief manor and the town by Margaret Woods, which tells of so many aspects of life at that time.

The occasional series ‘Lost buildings’ focuses upon the top of Angel Street and presents in photographs buildings that have been demolished sometime in the 20th century owing to the narrowness of the road at that point and the increasing volume of traffic.

In 1438, a group of Hadleigh citizens under Augustus Dunton wanted control over trading in the town so purchased from the lord of Toppesfield the right to hold the market and Michaelmas fair together with the market ground and other real estate. These are discussed in ‘Identifying rights belonging to Hadleigh market’. Do the owners of No. 37 and of No. 43 High Street know that the sites were part of the negotiations in 1438, which involved access at the back of their properties on to Market Place? The actions of Dunton and his companions 581 years ago now provides Hadleigh with one of the oldest town halls in the country that is still in public use.

There will be an exhibition presented by Sally Looker held at the Guildhall entitled ‘Partridge’s of Hadleigh: 200 years of trading’ on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October, 10 am to 4 pm, which will chart the history of the business and its shop premises at No. 60 High Street.

Hadleigh Art Club Activities The October programme begins on the first day of the month with “Portraits” followed the following week, (8th October) with a workshop with Claudia Myatt.

This session, which has been very much looked forward to, begins at 1.30 so it is suggested that members should arrive some half an hour earlier so that we’re already for the off. The subject of the workshop is Line and Wash, come prepared. On the 15th we follow up last week’s workshop by putting into practice that which we learned last week. October 22nd its Toadstools and Mushrooms, it’s the right time of the year to go out and collect some fungi so bring a handful in to draw and paint. The 29th is the last meeting of the month the subject is “Stones and shells collected during the summer. Paint them or paint on them.” The Art Club are always happy to greet new members, just turn up on a Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Library Seminar Room in Hadleigh.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s set to be Hadleighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event of the year, so donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss it! Come to the Town Hall and St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church on Saturday 5th October for our first giant Hadleigh on Show community day. Over 80 Hadleigh groups are waiting to meet you, along with a full day of entertainment. And it is all free.

The whole of the Guild Hall complex and St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church will be full of stands for you to visit and there will be plenty of entertainment. On stage in the Grand Hall you will have the opportunity to see: Hadleigh Ukulele Group, Historical Dancers, Hadleigh High School, Belly Dancing, Fashion Show and Hadleigh Community Choir, Boudicca Border Morris, Patsy Forsyth, HADS (Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society), and the Hadleigh Orchestra (in St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church).

Lunch and teas from Angel Delight will be available in St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church (and there will be exhibitors in the Church too). The event will be â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;openedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; by Bowza, Hadleighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous hero dog with a little assistance from Hadleigh District Councillor and Babergh Chairman, Kathryn Grandon, at 10am and will close at 4pm. There are groups to appeal to everyone, whatever your age and whatever your interest. Nearly all the exhibitors are Hadleigh based â&#x20AC;&#x201C; did you know there was so much going on? Award for Bowza Hadleigh Hero dog Bowza was presented with His â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Shining World Heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Trophy on Wednesday 28th August at the Toppesfield Picnic area, The Supreme Master Television people are a world wide Happy News station and broadcast to over 200 countries. They promote vegan food and way of living and support animal conservation around the world, saving and helping animals in distress. They recently donated $20k US dollars to the PDSA Animal welfare in the UK. Bowza received the award for helping to keep a lady from going in to shock and hypothermia by laying with her and keeping her warm until an ambulance arrived. At the presentation there were vegan treats for dogs, I thought maybe they would like a nice bone instead but to my surprise all the dogs (there was about 20) loved them, there was also a vegan picnic for all the human guests - I'm not a vegan but I must say it was very nice. A film crew came down from London and they fell in love with Bowza as he is so laid back and posed for photo's, filming and interviews for over two hours. I did not tell them that Bowzaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s treat when we got home was a big meaty bone...!

The Cock Inn, Hadleigh In addition to The Cock Inn’s bi-weekly Sunday Afternoon Soiree and the monthly Friday Live Music night the Cock hosts a rather successful and interesting Buskers evening. Its every 4th Tuesday and is essentially an acoustic only session where musicians play around the room. Any style of music is played from Folk to Rock n Roll. People can play and sing, sing unaccompanied, play instrumentally, play together, there is no fixed format, only that we play in turn and move around the room Conversation is kept to minimum during performances as a sign of respect for whoever is playing. It’s an extremely relaxed evening, full of good humour and a little banter.

Playing round the room acoustically means that anyone, no matter what their playing ability, be they beginner or accomplished musicians, has the chance to take part, unlike ‘Open Mike’ sessions where performers usually complete a set of maybe 3 numbers using microphones and a full amplification system, our next Open Mic is on Tuesday 24th October. So come along and join in, if you just want to sit in but not perform that’s fine and of course please come and listen. You never know you may be inspired. At August Buskers we witnessed over 20 musicians taking part. Don’t be shy!

Darts - Just a quick note about The Hadleigh Summer Dart League, it was an exciting end to the summer league with The Cock Inn Jets being crowned as Champions with a match in hand. Second placce is not yet decided and its close. Two other Cock Inn teams are in the running (The Vets & The Rebels) with the British Legion Arrows in the frame too. Don’t forget, The Cock Inn has started a beginners dart night. Its every Wednesday starting at 8.00pm. If you don’t have darts, use the pubs. Open to all non-league dart players or new comers. The summer league finished on the 30th September with the Winter League starting on Monday 21st October. The Cock Inn will host the Tilbury Dart Singles on Monday 7th October. This is an in-house tournament open to Cock Inn dart players and regulars only. The following Monday, the 14th The Cock will host The George Baalam Memorial Shield KO Tournament. Its an open competition with a £2 pound entry fee. Monies raised on the night will go to the MS charity. Free food at both events. Draw takes place at 7.45pm and starts at 8.00pm, both on the 7th & 14th.

Fidelis Activity News Life of Grime. Informative, entertaining, interesting were just a few of the feedback comments from members after His Honour Judge Overbury had spoken to the group just recently.

‘Life of Grime’ was the title of his talk and it covered all aspects of his work in court, the legal hierarchy and their official dress together with his own role as Diversity and Community Relations Judge. This enables him to engage with children of all ages to try and give them a better understanding of their country’s legal system. Drawing on his personal experiences, he has written appropriate plays in which the children can role play and enjoy. A thoroughly enjoyable evening giving us a rare insight into Rupert’s busy, challenging profession.

Lunch Bunch The Carrier’s Arms at East Bergholt was our chosen venue and a wise choice it proved to be. Freshly cooked food at incredibly competitive prices kept all diners happy. There was a brief reference to Brexit but no one wanted to spoil the meal so other more comprehensible topics quickly took its place.

Talliston House It’s not every day that you have the opportunity and the stamina to make your fantasy world a reality. Writer, John Tarrow, achieved this when he transformed his former Essex Council house and garden into an extraordinary magical place which showcases his vivid imagination for all to experience. Visitors cross continents and countries while exploring the thirteen unique rooms whose diverse landscapes include Twenties New York, Fifties New Orleans, a Scottish Castle and a Canadian log cabin.

Members were almost overwhelmed by the appropriate aromas and eclectic contents in each of the mysterious settings. John and a team of volunteers and craftsmen have been working on the building for 25 years. He has also travelled the world to find authentic artefacts to match the rooms. An unusual afternoon in mystical, often strange surroundings, which none of us would have missed. Free hearing assessments on offer in Hadleigh One local business is holding a free hearing care event to enable the residents of Hadleigh to communicate with confidence. Hearing loss affects 1 in 6 people in the UK and it takes 10 years on average before those who have noticed a loss in their hearing choose to seek help. Suffolk Bereavement Support A Way of Looking at Grief A way of looking at grief that many of our members find helpful is what we call the ‘Ball in the Bucket’ analogy. This is something which forms part of our welcome pack and is an idea that we return to from time to time as it can help members acknowledge that progress has been made along the path of adjustment, which is ultimately the aim of our support group. According to this model, the ball represents the grief we are experiencing, which we see as the reaction to losing someone who has been very important to us. The bucket represents our life. Initially, the ball fills the bucket and there is little or no room for anything else and we feel trapped and overwhelmed by the ball. Whilst the ball may always be the same size, through our own efforts and group support, we can increase the size of the bucket gradually. In this way we can slowly progress from being a person who is wholly consumed by grief to someone who is more than just that.

Sports fans queued for autographs from former England cricket captain Allan Lamb during a family barbecue and fun afternoon at Hadleigh Nursing Home.

A stream of families arrived from the town for the event which took place in bright afternoon sunshine on Saturday.

Mr Lamb, who played nearly 80 Test matches for England, visited the home in Friars Road ahead of his appearance in the evening at the Hadleigh Cricket Club Awards presentation. Mr Lamb chatted to staff, residents and visitors and signed photographs; the first six visitors received a free signed cricket ball.

Signed cricket bats were two of the prizes in a raffle supporting Hadleigh High School Allan Lamb with Roy Plumbly student Maisie Button who has been and Home Manager raising money by making craft items to pay Tracey Burt for her trip to Belize with other children from the school. They will be involved in projects to help villagers in the Central American country. There was a free barbecue and garden games for children including target football, crazy golf and skittles; a bouncy castle proved very popular. Children’s entertainer Josh, from J and J Entertainments, provided disco music and lots of extra fun and games. There was also live music from local string group Trills and Frills, and a performance by Diamond Lites Majorettes.

Hadleigh Nursing Home manager Tracey Burt said: “We were delighted Allan came along to help us celebrate our second anniversary. “We have come a long way since we opened on the site of the old Friars Hall nursing home and are thrilled by our glowing CQC report. “One of our regular respite residents, Clifford Rush, is a big cricket fan and loved talking to Allan who presented him with a signed hat. “One of our current residents, Peter Swallow, is also a cricket fan and enjoyed meeting one of his sporting heroes.”

Following his appearance at the barbecue, Mr Lamb was guest of honour at Hadleigh Cricket Club’s awards night which was sponsored by Kingsley Healthcare, which operates Hadleigh Nursing Home. The company’s IT and marketing director Wasantha Darshana introduced Mr Lamb at the event ahead of a question and answer session with club chairman and Radio Suffolk cricket hour host Dave Mann. Mr Lamb recalled his Ashes’ exploits in Australia, including the experience of sharing a room and playing alongside cricket legend Ian Botham. Kingsley sponsored a new lifetime achievement award, presented by Hadleigh Nursing Home manager Tracey Burt to Roy Plumbly, a club legend who scored more than 11,000 runs in his career before taking on the role of chairman for 22 years.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As we reach the turn in the seasons, with nights drawing in and the mornings becoming crisp, attentions inevitably shift to preparing for the colder months ahead. For many South Suffolk residents this results in a call to the oil companies for a pre-emptive tank top-up. Concerningly, following recent attacks on some of Saudi Arabiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s major oil facilities, we may see a sustained oil price spike that could impact local households. These attacks, which are currently attributed to drone strikes, are a timely reminder of the way in which international events often impact our daily lives.

At first the Iranian-backed Houthi rebel movement based in Yemen claimed responsibility for the strikes, but attention has since focused on Iran itself as a more credible instigator. Whoever is found responsible, one point I observed in relation to coverage of this important story is how discussion of knock-on effects is always directed at motorists. That is entirely understandable, since higher oil prices will mean dearer petrol and in a constituency like South Suffolk most households still depend on cars.

Nevertheless, it is interesting how commentators never seem to mention heating oil. This is an unfashionable old technology but one that many households â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including my own â&#x20AC;&#x201C; rely on in rural parts of the county because of legacy heating kit that is far from easy to replace. So whilst it is crucial to get the foreign policy right in this matter, there are also huge implications for our commitment to net zero carbon emissions, which must involve finding new affordable and practical ways to heat period homes that are not connected to mains gas. The very fact of having a finite tank makes one vulnerable to price spikes.

Of course, oil prices fluctuate constantly and it might be that by the time your next kerosene top up is due markets will have calmed. Either way, the episode is a reminder of how much we still rely on oil, and the wider reward that would come from truly weaning us off it: greater self-reliance, reducing our susceptibility to unpredictable events far from home.

Rotary Review Hadleigh Rotary Club will be at Hadleigh On Show in St Marys Church on Saturday 5th October. This is an important event for Hadleigh showcasing the many social and voluntary organisations available in the town. Activities of this sort help you relax from work, have fun and find new friends. Rotary can offer all this in one package!!

Members will be at hand to explain what Rotary is all about and to answer any questions which you may have. The organisation works both in the local community and internationally through the many clubs situated in almost every country. Domestically it provides youth activities through schools, universities and youth clubs. There are character building and business courses for young people 18 - 26, foreign exchange visits for school age children, college students and young adults up to age 30. Rotary is involved internationally in Polio eradication, Education, poverty and agricultural projects - you name it and Rotary will be involved somewhere.

Hadleigh is a small club of 15 people so its activities are limited mainly to community work such as the Christmas Collection with float and Father Christmas but the opportunities are there for members to become involved in any of the aforementioned projects and much more.

This Club meets on 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday each month at the George in the High Street and there is also a monthly coffee meeting at Paddy & Scotts. The club is very flexible and there are a number of ways of joining it.

Members will be pleased to discuss these with you if you are interested.

Wreath Making Workshops Autumn, my favourite time of year. Cooler days, cosier evenings and the turning of the leaves on the trees. It is also my favourite time in The Flower Shop. The flower stand is a picture of reds, oranges and golds, filled with an array of a different colours and textures of flower and foliage. With Autumn here, my thoughts and planning turn to Christmas. Last year our bespoke door wreaths were selling faster then my and Ruth's hands could make them and our wreath making workshop was our busiest, and might I say most enjoyable yet! With this in mind I have added a second class to our calendar this year and i'm already stocking up on beautiful accessories to add to our table of decorations to finish our wreaths. For those of you who have never enjoyed one of our workshops, it really is an enjoyable experience and good fun.

Suitable for those who have a creative mind or those who have never dabbled with wreath making before. Trust me, you will walk away at the end of the evening with something you will be proud of. At the start of the evening I will guide you through step by step, how we are going to make your wreath, provide an array of different foliage, flowers, berries, ribbons and accessories to create your masterpiece and let you choose your design.

This isn't a follow me class, I simply explain the method and let you do the rest.

Picking and choosing which items you would like to use, with me on hand, walking around the table helping anyone who needs me. My husband Mark, is chief tea maker for the evening and baker of the half time cake. St. Mary’s Raydon - Good News!

St Mary’s Raydon has been awarded a grant towards the cost of repairs to the gutters and associated roof elements on the north side of the aisle roof. This has been a worrying issue for some time as it is helping to cause damp within the lavatory/Vestry. The grant comes from Historic England who are running a project for the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport called the Taylor Review Pilot. The aim of the Pilot, which is taking place in Manchester and Suffolk, is to test some of the recommendations of a Review on the sustainability of English Churches and Cathedrals. Unlike some Continental churches there is no automatic funding from Government for places of worship in Great Britain, except for the reimbursement of VAT. Various organisations provide grants for ‘Heritage’ buildings but these are reducing and for some very small parishes a daunting task for which to apply. And of course Heritage is much more than ancient churches!

The grants being awarded at the moment are designed as ‘just-in-time’ solutions to problems, that if not tackled will become major ones in a few years. St Mary’s are delighted that we have been able to satisfy the requirements of Historic England and so can deal with exactly this type of problem, keeping the church in good order for many years to come.

1000 cyclists complete Hadleigh’s cycling sportive Since its launch 5 years ago, over 1000 cyclists have signed up and completed Hadleigh Cycling Club’s sportive, the Gayford Flyer. In total, they have cycled the equivalent of twice around the world. A large team of volunteers organised the sportive and afterwards received praise from many participants. One rider told the Club, “We rode your event and just wanted to say a big thanks to you and your team. We really enjoyed our day... happy people, great route/signage and excellent burger/atmosphere at the finish! Will put your event into our 2020 calendar and be spreading the word within our club/friends”. The sportive is supported by a host of sponsors including: The George, The Pedal House, Crockatt Garage, Sunny Day Cycleworks, East of England Co-op, M Chisnall & Sons and Rattlesden Gliding Club.

In other news, two Club members completed a mammoth journey across Italy.

The Hadleigh Steering Group met on Monday 9th September in the Social Room of the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre. Having received apologies from some absent members the report of the August meeting was approved unchanged. The Chair, Jan Devey, introduced the guest speaker Maureen Reynel MBE who gave a moving account of her charitable work. In 1990, Maureen founded and still runs the Suffolk based charity FIND. Since then the charity has supported over 50,000 people living in Ipswich and the surrounding areas who are in need, regardless of faith or circumstance. They continue to provide, free of charge, food, household items, furniture, nursery equipment and clothes to anyone deprived of the minimum standard of living.

Maureen had hoped that, once the recession was over, there would be a decline in demand but the opposite is true. Referrals, received from local statutory agencies, result in the group giving out over 100 food parcels a week and this is on the increase. The organisation, which is managed and run by over 80 dedicated volunteers, is dependent on financial assistance from churches, charitable groups, public bodies, grants, donations from individuals and fundraising events. The Mayor, Steve Allman, reported on the TC activities. It’s only been 16 weeks since the election and the new Council has been busy implementing a new committee structure. This includes a Council Matters Committee for internal matters, a Town Matters Committee to engage with local groups, plan Christmas and VE celebrations plus a Planning Advisory Committee. However, it should be noted that the Council has no decision-making power for planning. They have also set up Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity Committee and opened up meetings to the public for the first time. There are working groups for other issues such as Layham Road Sports Ground, Neighbourhood Plan and the new Cemetery Extension, where they hope to finally establish the full costs of this project and pull together a retrospective business case.

Steve and Deputy Mayor, Carolyn Cammack, have responded and enjoyed around 30 mayoral invitations with more to come at the High School, Bowls Club, Probus Club and a local resident’s 100th birthday celebrations. The first few months have not been without challenges; the Town Council has not had permanent clerk in post for over year and is looking to recruit one as soon as possible. However, they are keen to look to the future and, to that end, have established links with other groups such as Suffolk Police, Porch Project and Hadleigh on Show, in addition to working with residents on current, key local issues such as Benton Street and the Joint Local Plan. Happily, thanks to the co-operation of the Budd family they are able to provide this service during August and September at 85 High Street. Six V.I providers took part in training and undertake to keep the log recording data.

The Memories of Cedric Morris exhibition can also be viewed there. It is important to remember that the service is for residents as well as visitors. The venue, which is very much appreciated, is only temporary so they continue to explore the potential for more permanent premises.

As expected, numbers have varied for the regular guided Saturday walks.

The group bookings usually take place during the week. Town Guides have enjoyed sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm for the town. Following last year’s end of season visit by Colchester Guides, this year Ipswich Guides have been invited to explore the town accompanied by our guides.

Hadleigh in Bloom and the Community Gardens are ongoing projects.

The railings for the Cedric Morris Gardens are being made and we look forward to seeing them in place and planting climbing plants next spring.

Plants in the Market Garden are progressing well. After considerable problems with the old watering tanks, Jane and Stuart were delighted to inform the group that ‘Plant Parts” in Hadleigh have very kindly bought us a new stateof-the-art water bowser. This does the job quicker and more efficiently. A

massive thank you to Jan Byrne for her help and Richard Finch of Plant Parts for his generosity without which we would have struggled to keep the hanging baskets in bloom.

Tidy Town Nigel Jackson reported that Tidy Town continues to litter pick twice per week over a 4 week period with about 8 people attending per pick from about 20 regulars. The volunteers pick for about 1 ½ - 2 hours at a time, depending on numbers and the weather. Towards the end of the 4 weeks details of the next month’s picks are circulated. Babergh supply the team with heavy duty black sacks for the general litter and also arrange for the full bags to be collection. Re-cycling items are separated and put into team members’ own blue bins. The clean-up schedule also includes picnic tables, street signs and playground areas. The lay by near Wolves Wood is of particular concern as the rubbish found there constitutes a health hazard. This has been reported to Babergh District Council for action.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) Mike Turley reported on recent PPG activities which included meeting Sophie Cummins our local Community Connector linked to the NHS Social Prescribing initiative.

Sophie will be at the Hadleigh Practice on Wednesday and Friday mornings to meet patients who have been referred to her for appropriate, non-medical advice. The Art Display in the Health Centre is a PPG initiative. It is the first of many local artists’ work to be on show and for sale for three months.

Missed appointments at the Hadleigh and Boxford Surgeries in June were 165, in July 186 and in August 159; i.e.73 for GP’s and 86 for Nurses/Clinics.

The total ‘no shows’ for those three months is 510 the cost of which to the NHS is £15,300.

There also appears to be an increase in the number of calls from Doctors and Nurses which have been requested by patients but are not answered. If you are expecting a return call from the Practice please ensure that you are able to accept the call and do not ignore it. Unfortunately, because of the General Data Protection Regulations, calls from the Practice are unable to display their caller ID and are often ignored by recipients as a result.

Flu Vaccinations arrangements for 2019. For patients over 65 years old there is an open access clinic each day from 9.00 - 12.00pm and 2.30 - 5.30 pm so no need to make an appointment. However, because of the national delay of the vaccine for patients under 65 they should book an appointment by calling the Hadleigh Health Centre on 01473 822961. Appointments will be sent for the children's nasal vaccine.

Concerned about the rapid housing growth in the Hadleigh area, the PPG have formed a small working group to address the impact of these developments on the Practice. Figures have been drawn from recent planning applications, developer consultations and local knowledge. They are not comprehensive but they are indicative of potential housing /population growth in the Hadleigh Boxford Joint Practice catchment area. There is the added attraction of Angel Delights’ delicious homemade goodies being served all day in St Mary’s. Advertising the event is crucial and to this end leaflets have been circulated and large banners posted all over the town. Kathryn Grandon and Bowza, the famous canine, will open the proceedings. A comprehensive information pack will be sent out to all who have reserved a table. Ian and his team hope that the event will be well supported. A warm welcome, free entry and a programme guide awaits you at the Guildhall door in St Mary’s Churchyard.

A.O.B Jan Byrne drew attention to the forthcoming Archive exhibition in the Guildroom on Sat 19th and Sun 20th October from 10-4pm called ‘Partridges of Hadleigh’. Sanctioned by the Taylor family, it will cover all aspects of their 200 years of trading, their premises and people connected to this Hadleigh landmark. Entry will be £2(for the Market Feoffment) and refreshments will be available. Jan also requested that some recognition be given to VJ day as well as V E day. The Mayor said he would liaise with Mark Brennan of the British Legion to find out more.

Report To Hadleigh Town Council Thursday 19th September, 2019 Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson (Hadleigh North Ward) McCarthy & Stone – the development of Phase 1 is completed and residents took up occupancy at the end of August. I have been asked to open the site at a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 14th 1pm for those that may like to attend. I am having a meeting with Project Manager this week to finalise minor details, which could be improved, such as hedging along the edge of the walkway, which does appear rather exposed and needs softening. Babergh have allowed access to Pound Lane to residents for 12 weeks until completion of the site, At the entrance on Pound Lane only 1 of the 3 pillars has a cast stone ball, I think it would be appropriate to include two more on the others pillar caps to improve the entrance. Occupants have been left with no phone and internet, the problem being with BT. Cemetery Landscaping – I walked the cemetery site and am impressed with the work done to date. At the last Town Council meeting I requested the Cemetery Working Group lead by Gavin Talbot to develop a Landscaping Proposal to include planting, and encourage trees to be planted adjacent to the road to reduce austerity and create a floral or evergreen avenue of trees rather than ad hoc planting scheme. Many constituents have asked if the £500,000 + spent by the HTC on the Friars Road Cemetery extension was necessary. I had hoped that an independent survey of the cemetery will be completed within two months. I have asked the Town Council to confirm who is carrying out this survey and when will the numbers of available plots be made available to the public?

Persimmons Phase 2 Planning Application - south of the Ipswich road has been passed allowing for the development of 170 dwellings and a commercial unit. I have made significant changes to try to improve the landscaping as Phase 1 lacked trees and hedges. Phase 3 has been submitted and I am meeting with the developers to request similar changes and improvements on the site. A key objective is to provide a green development that is environmentally sustainable, which includes energy efficient homes.

Completion is expected within 4 years. There will be a contribution of £294,165 towards a pre-school, while Suffolk County Council plans to bid for more than £1.5million in Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) money to expand the primary and secondary schools as well as sixth form provision. Babergh - Councillors are being asked to consider renaming the council at a special meeting on October 22. It will need a two-thirds majority and if the name change is approved it then has to go to government ministers and the Ordnance Survey to be registered. The Leader advises if a change of name is agreed, implementation costs would be kept to an absolute minimum, tying in with work already taking place examining how existing logos for both Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are used and involving councillors from all parties.

Hadleigh Town Council has continued to make good progress over the last month, on outstanding challenges in addition to taking action on a range of new issues.

The Council’s charity committee has had its first fundraising success, securing a grant of £17,544 from the Rural Development Programme for England and Wool Towns Local Action Group, which will help to increase usage in The Guildhall by creating a new catering kitchen upstairs and updating floor coverings in part of the building. The Council has also arranged an assessment from the Ethical Property Foundation, which advises custodians of historic buildings how to manage them effectively and sustainably.

The Cemetery Extension Working Group has been working hard to pull together all known costs relating to the cemetery extension project and, by the time this goes to print, it is likely that the Council will have released this information to the public, with details about next steps. The Layham Road Sports Ground Working Group has also been active and its membership now includes a number of local sports groups who use the facilities at Layham Road. The Council has continued to comment on planning applications and has prepared a response to Babergh District Council’s consultation on the Joint Local Plan. A number of Councillors attended a public exhibition in September, where Persimmon Homes were displaying plans to submit an application to develop 250 homes on land adjoining Ellen Aldous Avenue and Frog Hall Lane. The Council has invited Persimmon Homes to present detailed plans at a future Council meeting. There is more information about the proposals online at www.hadleighphase2.co.uk Work on the new swimming pool is now well underway, with the Town Council making a significant contribution towards this project, which will create a community asset that will be used by Hadleigh residents for generations to come. The Council’s Town Matters committee is also updating the Council’s grant policy and application process, which should be released this month and enable a fair and equitable process for community groups to request funds from the Council.

Councillors continue to work for local residents by representing the Council on a number of local groups. In the last month, Councillors have attended the Hadleigh Steering Group, Hadleigh Traffic Management Working Group, in addition to supporting a resident to resolve a rights of way issue and liaising with the Armed Forces on upcoming events. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor continue to be active within the town, representing the Council at a wide range of local events.

Recruitment of a new full-time clerk is underway and the Council has also committed to a wider review of the staffing structure to ensure that Hadleigh Town Council is sufficiently resourced to deliver on a number of these plans and future developments. In the future, as resources increase, the Council has committed to longer office opening hours to enable increased access by local residents and significant work is being undertaken to update information on the website.

Finally, following the workshops hosted by Hadleigh Town Council earlier this year, Babergh District Council has announced that they will be supporting the development of a “vision” for Hadleigh, which will engage local residents to create a vision, or a plan, for the town’s culture, business and economy. The vision team has been invited to meet with the Town Council and it is anticipated there will be further opportunities for local residents to contribute their views. Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Update One of the more enjoyable aspects of being Mayor is having regular opportunities to meet with the various people and groups who make a positive contribution to our community, and this month has been no exception.

I popped into the Hadleigh Steering Group meeting to provide an update on the Town Council. The group was formed by local residents with an interest in community issues and it was encouraging to see so many groups represented. We also received an inspiring presentation from Maureen Reynel MBE, the founder of FIND, which provides food, furniture and support to those in need.

I attended Hadleigh High Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaugural business breakfast this month, where I was invited to give a talk about my role. It was encouraging to see so many local businesses there (perhaps the bacon rolls were a good incentive, they were for me!) and it was good to hear how the High School hopes to work more closely with local businesses to create opportunities for its pupils and forge closer links with the community.

Some of you may have noticed the pop-up Tourist Information Centre on the High Street, opposite The Kings Head. The shop is being run by volunteers from Visit Hadleigh, including the Town Guides, who also run the website of the same name. I was invited to pop in for a chat with Stuart and the team about increasing tourism and visitors to the town, and also had chance to see the shopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s display about the artist Cedric Morris, who ran an art school at Benton End. Hadleigh & District Probus Club invited me to their recent lunch meeting at The George. The club, which is an amalgamation of the words â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;professionalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;businessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, provides friendship and fellowship for retired and semi-retried people with a business background and I was happy to answer questions following a brief talk about recent developments at the Town Council.

Upcoming commitments for Deputy Mayor Carolyn Cammack and myself include attending the ground-breaking ceremony for the new swimming pool at Hadleigh & South Suffolk Leisure Centre, the opening ceremony of the new McCarthy & Stone development, Hadleigh Bowls Club Dinner, Hadleigh on Show and various events to mark Remembrance Day in November. Sudbury & District Citizens Advice My mum has a non-visible disability, which causes her walking difficulties. I heard something on the news about how she may now be eligible for a blue badge. How can I find out about this and help her apply? On 30 August, the Blue Badge scheme was extended to people who live in England and have non-visible disabilities or conditions which affect their ability to walk. As a result, your mother may now qualify for a badge. Your mother will be automatically eligible if she gets certain types of benefits. These include some categories of Personal Independence Payment and the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance.

If sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not automatically eligible she can still apply for a badge. Her local authority will use evidence from doctors and other healthcare professionals to determine whether she qualifies or not.

Your mother can check her eligibility and apply for a local authority-issued Blue Badge at gov.uk/apply-blue-badge. If she canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do this herself, you can apply on her behalf. No need to fear Brexit – there’s local food on the doorstep All we are hearing from our national politicians is doom and gloom. Rationing at supermarkets, less food in small shops and leaked government memos from Westminster quoting import 5060% delays at major terminals and a push on prices. So are we all doomed to queues and higher prices as some commentators are stating? ‘Absolutely not’ states award winning Farmers Market organisers – Suffolk Market Events. ‘Why are we talking about all the things that we won’t have when we should be talking about all the local food that Suffolk will continue to have Brexit or no Brexit. Talk to our local producers at our farmers markets and they will tell you the same story – it is business as usual’ says Justine Paul, founder of Suffolk Market Events.

‘Suffolk has an abundance of superb local producers that do not rely on the supermarket or wholesale distribution but trade at regular markets every week around the county. Kersey Mill Newsletter Over the summer Kersey Mill welcomed a large number of visitors from both the local community and from further afield, especially during the nationally organised Heritage Open Days that were held in September. It was a great opportunity for everyone to see the extensive restoration work that has been carried out to the Mill so far, as well as enjoy a walk around the beautiful gardens and grounds.

From the beginning of October, work gets underway to transform the Mill in preparation for the increasingly popular Santa’s Workshops. The Workshops are the major fundraising events which are held throughout December in order to help with the Mill’s ongoing restoration.

Santa’s Workshops are the perfect event for children and adults to experience the magical build up towards Christmas and the festive season. Each Workshop lasts approximately 1 hour and your little ones will enjoy a short story read by Mrs Claus in the cosy log cabin before heading over to Santa’s Workshop, where they will meet Santa and help his wonderful elves prepare for Christmas. Activities include face painting, mixing reindeer food, craft work, loading the sleigh, checking the names on Santa’s Scroll and singing along with Santa.

The Santa’s Workshops are run from 10.30am-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays throughout December starting from Sunday 1st and for the final weekend this will also include Friday 20th and Monday 23rd.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday September 9th 2019: I know what you're thinking - 'that photo doesn't look much like Deb Hart and a woven willow dragonfly!'- and you would be right, sadly our speaker for the September meeting was laid up with a bad back. However that didn't stop us having a good evening, at short notice one of our club members, Sue Mordey, agreed to step in.

Several years ago Sue made a career change from teaching, going on to train as a garden designer and garden design was her theme for the evening.

Her way of working was very hands on and she stressed some important elements in designing a new garden - take account of the surrounding area, emphasising good points, for example a good view and disguising others.

Essentials in good garden design are variety of form, texture, scale and proportion and, finally, light, shade and colour. All these were illustrated by examples of gardens she had worked on over the years.

At the end of the evening she gave us an overview of the development of her own garden in Semer which was, at the start, a field with a horse pond, very little wildlife and not much else. After a few short years she has created a very large pond, a beautiful meadow, island beds, a vegetable garden and a woodland area. The garden, which she continues to develop, is now home to a wide variety of insects, bats, badgers, ducks and even otters! Our competition for September was for the longest runner bean and congratulations go to Kate who managed to grow one measuring 23 inches!

Monday October 14th: Our speaker for October will be Shirley Sampson from the RSPB garden at Flatford, she will be sharing with us her expertise on wildlife gardening, a subject high on the agenda at the present time. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall. The entrance is £4 for visitors and £2 for members to include refreshments, there will be a raffle and plants for sale. The competition for October is 'a vase of autumn colour', new members and visitors are always welcome. Hadleigh Walkers Our October walk on Saturday 12th will start at Hadleigh and finish at the Kersey Bell. It is a pleasant 7.5 miles through countryside to the Northwest of Hadleigh. We will meet at 0930 at St Mary’s School on Stonehouse Road.

Our route will be Constitution Hill, Coram Street, Kersey Vale, William’s Green, Kersey Tye, Lodge Farm, passing close to St James’s chapel Lindsey which is worth a brief visit, Lindsey Hall, Priory Farm and on to the Bell.

This pleasant local walk is not strenuous and takes about 3 hours to the Bell and the walk back to Hadleigh is about 3 miles for those feeling energetic.

Alternatively, those with foresight could arrange for a car to meet them or be left earlier at the Bell. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs.

Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground may be muddy or rough in places. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Looking further out to November, we are still thinking but if anyone has any suggestions we will be happy to consider them. More details next month.

Down to Earth ...with Dave With the summer sun now not so strong it is a good time to remove any greenhouse shading. Posh structures have lovely expensive blinds fitted on the inside of the glass, these can be pulled up as required. The old traditional shading is a coat of whitewash painted on the inside of the glass, this is a bit messy to remove. My answer is to use slatted bamboo blinds normally used on windows indoors, over the years I have acquired several of these at car boot sales. They are ideal when unrolled on the outside of the glass and secured down to various old weight with their strong nylon pull cords, to allow as much light in as possible, they are now just rolled up and put away till next year. Now is the time to give the greenhouse a clean before we get any cold weather and plants left outside for a few hours will not hurt.

Now is the season of cutting back, after the last of the autumn fruiting raspberries have been picked the canes should be cut right down to the ground. The summer fruiting ones should have only had the old fruit bearing stems cut right back to the ground with any fresh growth kept and tied in on whatever framework you have. They will all get a generous mulch of compost.

The runner beans have all but finished now, they do get a bit stringy as they get older. Some of the best pods are left on the plants to provide seed for next year, only save the longest and fattest. Most of a bumper crop of butternut squash are ripening in the greenhouse but some are being left to grow a bit more on the plants, the ripening fruits can be placed on bricks or boards to stop them rotting, also remove any untidy or diseased foliage. Lavender bushes can be given a good haircut, but remember to cut only this year's growth and not to cut into older wood.

This year we have hardly any apples so storage will not be a problem. An idea in one of the gardening magazines is rather than wrapping each individual fruit in paper, to cushion the fruit in paper shreddings from the office... when finished with these can be put on the compost. If you want to naturalise bulbs in your grass, cut a piece of turf, place to one side, fork over the exposed soil to the required depth adding some fertiliser if the soil is poor. Plant the bulbs at a depth of three times their size, replace the turf, gently tamping it back and filling in any gaps, give the area a good watering and wait for spring.

On a recent visit to Polstead Mill to see the wonderful walled garden, greenhouse and gardens, the gardener mentioned a particular problem they were having with the weed oxalis spreading everywhere. This can be a very attractive low growing plant with small clover like leaves and bright small flowers in various colours. The problem is that the weed version can soon take over, spreading onto paths and into pots. The answer is never to put any of the plant on the compost heap but to burn it, once you have it it's very difficult to get rid of.

Porch Project On Wednesday 4th September it was World Sexual Health day and here at the Porch Project, we couldn’t think of a better day to launch our new scheme. We are now part of the C-Card scheme.

The c-card scheme is aimed at young people between 13-24 years old who can register to get information and advice on sex and relationships as well as free condoms, femidoms and lubricant. The aim of the service is to promote healthy and safe relationships and to help young people access local services.

Our staff have attended training with the Terrence Higgins Trust in recent months on how to deliver this service to promote safe relationships and have also been trained on how to talk to young people about sex. We will be having some of their fantastic staff in on the 2nd and 9th October from 5-7pm at our Youth Centre (28A High Street) who will be offering healthy relationship workshops with young people aged 14+.

Along with the C-Card, we are now also able to offer chlamydia screening here.

Today’s figures published by Public Health England show there were 447,694 sexually transmitted infections (STIs) reported in England in 2018.

Gonorrhoea cases are up 26% on the year before and the highest number in over 40 years, with syphilis up 5% from 2017.

The key statistics are: • 249% rise in gonorrhoea from 2009 and 26% from 2017.

• 165% increase in syphilis from 2009 and an increase in 5% from 2017 .

• 22% drop in chlamydia testing of young people (15-24 years) since 2014.

• Overall STI rates up by 5% on the year before, when there were 422,147 new STI diagnoses.

• Attendance at sexual health services has risen 15% in five years.

Hadleigh in Bloom Over the last three years ‘Hadleigh in Bloom’ has gone from strength to strength and I know that many residents and visitors enjoy the hanging baskets up and down the High Street, adding a splash of colour to our beautiful town. However, with our increasingly hot summers it has proven a challenge to keep the baskets sufficiently watered. Well Above the Parapet Suffolk County Council - Cllr Mick Fraser Babergh District Council - Hadleigh South Suffolk County Council - We Are Listening I am delighted to advise that on Friday 18th October Suffolk County Council will hold their “We Are Listening” event in Hadleigh. I will be joined by the Leader of the Council, Cllr Matthew Hicks, other county councillors and senior council managers all wishing to hear your views. So, please come along and discuss your concerns, opinions and ideas for our great county of Suffolk. The stall will be between 11am – 1pm in the Market Place.

Benton Street I intend now to move forward with appropriate traffic management measures for Benton Street to improve safety for pedestrians and other roadway users.

I have recently discussed this issue with the Mayor, Cllr Steve Allman, as it is important that I have the Council’s support for the preferred scheme. On 19th August I gave a presentation to the council and other residents of various traffic management options available, designed by Suffolk Highways. This allowed me to explain the merits and shortcomings of each and suggest how best this issue should be progressed. It is my hope that I can now trigger Highways to start the next phase and install a traffic management scheme early next year.

You might ask why nothing has been done before to address these longstanding issues? However, in 2015 Suffolk Highways proposed a traffic management design including chicanes, bollards along the carriageway and wider build-outs for the pavements at the narrowest points (see photo). This proposal was put forward by a SCC officer to a Town Council arranged gathering of invited residents. Unfortunately, they mostly objected to the design and the plan was subsequently shelved. It is a shame that we could have all be benefitting from a well-engineered solution to address these safety issues, had it been installed then. I suggest this was a great opportunity lost!

Bus Subsidies In my June 2019 article I reported that SCC was removing £340k of subsidies to a number of routes across Suffolk. Regrettably, several that serve Hadleigh would be affected. I can now state that some routes will continue, including: route 971 which will now run fully commercial by the operator; and the Routes 461 and 112 have had their council support extended through until 31st March 2020.

Hadleigh Traffic Management Working Group In August I invited our Highways Community Engineer to view several roadways issues that were brought to his attention by the HTMWG. During a very productive afternoon we discussed the need for better crossing points especially for the disabled on the High Street and on Lady Lane. Also, I pointed out the many broken paving slabs around the Town centre area which cause trip hazards. It was also noticed that the two mini-roundabouts by The Kings Head Public House need repainting. Hopefully, all these items will be rectified soon.

I have also reported to the group that I have initiated other safety schemes using my Local Highways Budget. These include safety measures at the Cottesford Close footpath crossing point on Station Road and the entrance to Hadleigh Nursing Home on Friars Lane.

The Hold - Suffolk’s New Record Office Building work on The Hold record storage office is now well underway. Whilst it is primarily a record storing facility, it has so much more to offer. There will be a dedicated exhibition space which will host four specially curated exhibitions per year, to encourage both young and old to interact with Suffolk’s culture and history. Exhibitions make up just a small portion of events that will be held in the building. A 200seat tiered auditorium will primarily be used by the University of Suffolk but will also host conferences and talks by archivists. The Hold’s thermal mass maintained strong room record storage facility spans an impressive 1650 cubic metres, spread over three floors.

Babergh District Council Planning permission has now been granted for Persimmon to build the Phase 1 of 172 new homes at Weavers Meadow. This development will include 35% affordable homes including five bungalows, and will comprise of 1, 2, 3 and 4-bedroom dwellings. This should go some small way in addressing the high demand for new houses across the district. A small piece of land closest to the by-pass will be transferred to BDC for potential employment use. This developer also intends to submit a further planning application soon for their larger phase 2 development of 250 dwellings and further employment land.

If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website - www.layham.org Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council Meeting of 28 August 2019 were: • Public Forum The parishioner present said that interest had been expressed in having a seat on Blacksmith’s Corner in Lower Layham for use by cyclists (Lower Layham was on the National Cycle Route) and walkers passing through the village. Suffolk CC required a licence to be purchased as it owned the land, but if the PC made the application it appeared the charge might be waived. It was agreed to discuss this further at the September meeting.

• District Council report The new arrangements for bin collections were working well, following a few initial teething problems. Work to build a new swimming pool at the Hadleigh Leisure Centre was scheduled to start at the end of August.

• County Council report Referring to EDF Energy’s Sizewell C Stage 4 preapplication consultation, Councillor Curran wondered whether there was likely to be an impact on the Layham area – for instance, additional pylons; if so, he would be willing to be involved in the consultation process. The Clerk circulated information about the Ipswich Northern Route consultation - the deadline for responses to this was 13 September. It was agreed to ask Councillors Jones and Ward if they were able to provide advance notice of any future consultations. It was noted that individuals could also respond to consultations.

• Footpath between Upper Layham and Hadleigh As agreed at the last meeting, the Chairman had reported the issue of overgrown vegetation.

Suffolk CC had cleared part of the area, although the rubbish had not been taken away. A stretch of the footpath along Benton Street had been widened as part of the building development at the old Hadleigh Building Supplies site.

It was agreed to write to the developer to say councillors were pleased that this had made the footpath safer for pedestrians and were wondering whether there were any plans to extend the widening.

• Footpath from Church Lane to Waterhouse Farm The footpath had now been cut. However, several parishioners had expressed concern that horses were now occupying the field at the Church Lane end and there was no warning sign or barrier separating them from the footpath.

• SCC Community Self-Help Scheme The Clerk had sent a letter to the Minister for the Environment and had also submitted a list of queries to SCC. SCC had offered to host a meeting to discuss this further; she would reply to say three Councillors would like to accept the invitation and would report back to full Council.

• Speeding The working group’s update was noted. Councillor Curran emphasised the need to have a speed survey carried out as soon as possible to provide data which would help to prove that there was a problem and action was needed; the survey would be ‘blank’, i.e. no registration numbers would be recorded. The Clerk would send the working group’s report to SCC and ask for the survey to be carried out as soon as possible. It was agreed to send an interim update to parishioners once a date for the survey had been confirmed.

• Emergency Plan Councillor Curran explained that the Emergency Plan communications tree required updating as there were new councillors and some of the Emergency Link Volunteers (ELVs) did not wish to continue. He suggested some changes and would update the document and re-circulate it for comment before the next meeting. It was agreed to hold an Emergency Plan session in the autumn for everyone involved.

• Babergh & Mid Suffolk Draft Joint Local Plan consultation The deadline for responding to the draft Joint Local Plan consultation had been extended to 30 September. The Chairman and Vice Chairman would attend a drop-in session in Hadleigh, with other councillors attending if possible and the consultation would be on the agenda for the September meeting.

• Autumn Litter Pick / Spring Clean It was agreed that this would take place on Saturday 26 October.

• Lay-by at the top of Rands Road, Lower Layham For some time there had been an issue with rubbish being dumped and youths using the lay-by at weekends and leaving empty cans etc; the gravel pit company had now placed blue ‘bollards’ and a steel ‘no entry’ sign in the lay-by to prevent this.

Although not particularly aesthetically pleasing, this action was welcomed.

• Allotments One of the tenants had reported some produce and a cloche had been stolen from their allotment; the other allotment holders had been alerted.

In the spring we were delighted to have about 30 volunteers carrying out a range of tasks including: litter picking, clearing vegetation from the path between Upper Layham and Hadleigh, river bank clearance, and edging a green on Brett Green. This year one of our projects will be to work on the Burial Ground opposite the church in preparation for Remembrance Sunday.

We know that many of you who have helped before will join us again this autumn. We will also be very pleased to welcome new volunteers.

If there is a particular task you would like to help with, or if you are aware of a different ‘tidying up job’ that needs doing, please let me or a member of the Parish Council know in advance so that we can get teams organised; or just turn up on the day! We can provide litter pickers, reflective jackets and refuse bags, but you will need to bring your own protective gloves please and possibly a garden tool. We’ll meet up at 10am on Saturday 20th October either on the playing field in Upper Layham or opposite the Queen’s Head in Lower Layham. Hope to see you then! Thank you.

Layham Family Fun Event The first event, held on 31st August, organised by the newly formed Layham Events Committee was a great success with up to 70 people converging on the Playing Field.

Rounders Teams from Upper and Lower Layham competed; burgers and sausages were consumed and the sun shone. Despite the Lower Layham team having an extra innings to make up for their smaller number, Upper Layham won by 3.5 to 3 rounders. The trophy was presented to the Upper Layham captain Jack Green by our umpire John Lee.

Thanks to the events committee who organised the day; to Ian Dodson (I.D.Plumbing Ltd) and Colin Britton (RiderMount) for their sponsorship and for manning the barbecue; to Nigel Pye for making the trophy at very short notice and to everyone else who helped. In particular we thank the very sporting rounders players of all ages.

Layham Playgroup We have been getting to know all our new families and the children are settling into the playgroup. We have been thinking about what we look like, our likes and dislikes and our families and homes. The children have led our role play and transformed the area from homes to doctors and on to hospitals. The weather has provided us with lots of opportunities during our outdoor play; our mud kitchen area has been a big favourite; we have also had bubbles and streamers on windy days. The weather has also helped the flowers and vegetables in the Playgroup garden to grow. Our sunflowers and lilies have grown very tall, our pumpkins are starting to flower and we are waiting for our apples to be ready to pick from our apple tree. As we think about the changing season, we are looking forward to celebrating our Harvest Festival with our friends at St Andrews church.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre As usual, I’m a bit on the drag with our news from the Centre; you journalists need copy sent in earlier and earlier!

Which is not to sound ungrateful, of course we writers like to be published and are very appreciative of the space you give us. So my news is of last month’s grand clean up before the new term started. On a gloriously sunny but cold day a great many volunteers pitched up to get the buildings and equipment looking spick and span again. Babs and I were not exempt needless to say. All the resident spiders in our room were moved on and out, not to mention the dust and hay from the yard, and the accumulated ‘rubbish’ that gathers in case it might be useful.

Worst of all for the humans up here was the devastation wrought by pigeons.

A flock had moved in to the cart shed where all the games equipment is housed and it had done what roosting birds will do, all over everything. The Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Trustees (no less) donned protective clothing, boots and masks, and set to with power hoses. Surely this is dedication? Thank you, you two, from the bottom of out hearts.

I have a regular visitor outside the window of my room, did you know? Tony motors up here from Raydon most mornings on his mobility scooter to park in the sun and look at the ponies and see what’s going on. He kindly agreed to let me publish this lovely photo of him, thanks, Tony!

Thank you as well to the volunteer team from Fisher Jones Greenwood Solicitors from Colchester who helped clear and cut the fields at Shelley recently. Ties, Lisa, Lawrence, Scott and Lucy. They did sterling work, supported admirably by Rob. Just the job to give the regular maintenance team a morale boost.

We have a pony day coming up on 5th October when our riders can spend all Saturday with one live pony of their choice, looking after it, making its stable nice, and finally riding it. There is always plenty of food involved I remember.

But if you can’t be a lucky pony owner that day remember to come in to Hadleigh for the ‘Hadleigh On Show’ event 10.00am -4.00pm where we shall have a presence and you may be able to find out more about ME!! See you there.

Don’t mess with Hadleigh Do you ever wonder why some people continue to throw their rubbish on the ground, while volunteers care deeply enough to pick up another person’s mess? Each year, Hadleigh’s Our Tidy Town team pick up around 250 bags of waste: they could be forgiven for throwing down their pickers, as changing littering behaviours can feel like pushing water uphill with a rake.

So, do witty signs or painful fines prevent littering? What about government drives such as ‘Stop the Drop’, a cigarette butt campaign? Well, around 7,000 butts - the planet’s most common form of litter - were collected in one afternoon along Ipswich waterfront. Three million smokers admit to throwing a butt down a drain within the past month, yet just one butt per litre of water is highly toxic to fish. Cigarette filters made of plastic and chemicals - including arsenic, lead and nicotine - leak into water, pollluting air and soil. These toxins can enter the human body via the food chain.

Normally, the distance to a rubbish bin is a strong predictor of littering, yet the Hadleigh team distribute hundreds of cigarette butt purses to businesses, pubs and cafes in the High Street - still this seems too much of a hassle for those who have grown up in a disposable society and are habituated to, well, ‘dispose’. You could say this for a lot of environmental issues - we don’t mind doing the right thing as long as it’s not too disruptive to the way we live our lives.

The British are Europe’s largest consumers of food and drink on-the-move, and food containers abound in any litter-pick. Although most people litter when they’re not watched, pedestrians using mobile phones seem to drop litter in a technology-induced trance, where the environment disappears. Although these individual behaviours matter, essentially rubbish should be tackled at source. The real solution is a zero-waste society.

In times of austerity, are we surprised that councils struggle to deliver all that is expected of them? That’s why four friends started litter-picking; gradually more joined them, with Hadleigh Town Council and Babergh District Council providing equipment and support. No matter how endless clean-ups might feel, they make both a visible and unseen difference, as it’s clear that we have a huge influence on each other. This is why the Our Tidy Town team are this month’s Eco Heroes.

On 10th August during the exceptionally high winds that blew that day, a pivotal telegraph pole in Angel Street against the yard of the Kings Head pub, and containing dozens of connecting lines blew down across Angel Street and rested there at an angle of 45 degrees, the time was approx 11.30am that day. Fortunately no one was hurt but three way traffic at the High Street/ Angel Street junction was held up for a few hours while maintenance men frantically worked to restore matters. For three hours or more during this, an area of domestic Hadleigh was completely cut off from electric and telephone. I was witness to this, as I was taking guests to the Kings Head but was told it had no electricity and was therefore shut. Walking back up the High Street, Hadleigh was completely blacked out and was only normal at the milepost.

BUT what had happened to the church clock? Since then its regular chimes have been fractured and the people of Hadleigh can no longer rely upon its regularity. If this is connected with the telegraph pole, then what is it? Please may we have our church clock back in chiming order.

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group The Community Connector Scheme is now accessible at the Hadleigh Health Centre. What does the scheme offer? The Community Connector Scheme aims to do just what it says! It will support you to connect with: • social activities, clubs and groups and like-minded individuals in this community • the right advice and information for your local situation The Scheme does this by offering a private face to face discussion with a “Community Connector” to explore ‘what matters to you’ and NOT ‘what is the matter with you?’. Together with the Community Connector over up to four appointments, you will build your own personal action plan around what is important to you and be supported to put this plan into action. This may include access to: • Debt, benefits, housing advice • Health and fitness groups, such as walking, cycling and dance • Peer support groups, arts, culture and history groups • Local volunteering opportunities When and how can I see a Community Connector? French’s Care Haven Fantastic news came along in September regarding our homeless plight.

A lovely couple called Deborah and Andrew Stewart who recently bought a house with land close to Hadleigh, contacted me to offer their grazing land to use for French’s Charity, as they wanted to give something back to French’s Care Haven, as Deborah said “we had been watching you from a distance seeing all the work you do with animals and local people who have mental health problems, as we have a disabled son and he has been part of one of the mental health groups you work with, we felt we wanted to give something back to you, for all your hard work”. When I went along to meet the Stewarts for the first time and look at the 26 acres of land that was being offered I was overwhelmed with emotion, I cried, started sweating, hyperventilating, then had a throbbing head ache suddenly come on where my blood pressure had gone through the roof, I was a total wreck. After years of French’s farm scenarios of it up for sale, do we have to go or can we stay, then it was sold and the blow when the new owner’s plans did not include my charity. The start of 19 months searching for a new base began.

We had the major upheaval move of all our animals and equipment, the equipment alone took 8 removal lorry trips to Felixstowe. With nothing else being offered to us we had no choice but to go, knowing that this temporary home was being sold for 350 houses and had we had to be off by this December. It has been a huge stressful continuing night mare for me, awful really awful. Never one to give up, I just kept going refusing to think negative and have kept positive thoughts and all I can say is, I was tested to the brink!! The stress is not completely over, this is just the start of a new phase in the life of French’s Care Haven, a Charity that goes by the heading ‘Helping Animals, Helping People’ To start I need physical help with the wooden fencing repairs, strimming and help raising monies needed for movable field shelters, as we are having to start from scratch again. I am desperate for hands on help and for offers of wood, second hand field shelters or stables that we can put on skids. Can you help us please? Or do you know someone who can? As we cannot move our animals into their new home until we have everything safe and ready for them all.

In our photos we have our Therapy dog Lucy with one of the volunteers and Lissy with Dollymix her favourite horse, who has helped Lissy through her troubled times. Lissy is now a valued member of French’s volunteers and to Lissy’s credit with our help has overcome confidence and anxiety issues that were holding her back in life. Note for your calendar Sunday 6th October at 12 pm, we are having an ‘all hands on deck’ afternoon.

Bring a hammer, drill and strimmer, in our get together there will be a nice glass of wine or beer waiting for you...hoping the weather is good. So far this season we have won 27 trophies at competitions in Skegness, Clacton and Ipswich, we still have 2 competitions to attend in October. The girls have also won many individual medals at these competitions, they have all done really well and made us proud. We have also danced at local fetes and care home. If you would like us to dance at your fete/event please contact us. If you think you would like to learn the skills of baton, mace, poms and flag twirling and dancing to the latest music whilst keeping fit, making new friends and having a complete blast then please feel free to check us out. We welcome boys and girls aged 5 and over (adults very welcome). We train at the Ansell centre Hadleigh on a Thursday night and Elmsett village hall on a Monday night. We traditionally don't have a meeting in August but we do have a Ramble. On 20th August some of us had a ramble along the Railway Walk and afterwards Pat Rocks hosted us for a lovely Afternoon Tea which we enjoyed in her garden as it was such a lovely day!

Three of our members joined Polstead W.I. last week for an open meeting which was very well attended. The speaker was Rachel Stone who gave a very interesting and humorous account of her experiences when presenting on Radio Suffolk. We were then treated to some delicious snacks with the tea and coffee.

Our original speaker for September was unable to come and we were thrilled that Chrissie Scott was able to come and speak to us at very short notice. Chrissie was, herself a lawyer who specialised in Entertainment Law and Capital. Her clients included the Queen Mother, Princess Dianna and Spike Milligan. She had spent a few years in Nigeria as her husband had a job as an architect there and this gave her some familiarity with African people.

Some years later Chrissie and her husband retired to the Maltese island of Gozo. Every week, she and her friend used to take the ferry over to Malta to go shopping and one fine day as they landed among the fishing boats in the harbour, they saw a huge crowd of traumatised and filthy people of all ages being led off another boat.

Chrissie just had to find out about them and she was told that they were immigrants who had been rescued from the sea. The same situation as we have today. The immigrants were mainly from different African countries such as, Nigeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone. These people were being sent to a campsite in Malta to live in very old tents that had been left behind by the British Army years before. As many as 26 people were having to stay in a tent meant for 12 people and there was no running water.

Chrissie wanted to see what they could do to help but the guards would not allow them into the camp. However, when Chrissie said that they were from The Mothers' Union, a church organisation they were allowed access. They were able to talk to some of the people and heard some really sad stories.

One woman called Ruth, trekked across the Sahara with her husband and two brothers in order to get to Libya. They stayed on the shore for a year working and saving enough money to buy life-jackets and then for a passage on a ramshackle boat. By this time she also had a young baby. The boat capsized, the brothers were lost as they had no life jackets. Ruth's husband managed to save them both but the baby died of hypothermia.

Chrissie and her friend went to the Mothers' Union and asked them for clothes and they concentrated on women and children. When Europeans were going back home ,Chrissie asked them to bring back unwanted clothes. They ended up with a huge response. They were also responsible for getting other people involved. A shoe factory in Gozo let them help themselves to 100 pairs of new shoes. Cathedral parishioners gave some children days out and Tea and a volunteer Father Christmas gave presents to 200 children. The American Ambassador filled a plane and sent some people to America. Among these were Ruth and her husband who started a new life. Some European countries also took some of these immigrants.The Jesuits got some mums and babies out of the camp and housed in empty buildings. The Anglican Church started raising, ‘Pennies For Pampers’. Eventually, Medicin Sans Frontier and the Maltese Red Cross both got involved. Malta no longer takes immigrants. They return them to Libya. However, Chrissie received a Maltese Knighthood for her work.

Local men from Hadleigh raise over £5500 for Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance The four old men from Hadleigh, affectionately named, who completed the famous UK Coast to Coast walk in June, recently presented a cheque to the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance for £5518.70, following a special evening of celebration.

The event which took place at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on Friday 6th September, was a chance for the fab four, Jim Sephton, Jimmy Wilding, Anthony Foster and Richard Groom, to share stories from their epic 192 mile walk across England, from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Yorkshire coast, as well as a chance for them to thank the local community for their support.

Local brewer Adnams, kindly donated wine for the evening, and Stuart from the Gables Bed and Breakfast in Hadleigh was a fitting MC. Jim Sephton said: “What a fantastic evening, which was made all the more enjoyable by the huge numbers of people who turned out to support us. Our grateful thanks to Adnams for their support and to Anthony for organising the nibbles. This walk came about because Jimmy had an ambition to walk the Coast to Coast so for all of us it’s was quite emotional to reach the end of the walk having experienced many highs and lows during the 12 days of the walk.

Hadleigh Choral Explores Elijah…

The Ansell Centre was buzzing with excited chatter as the members of Hadleigh Choral Society and their guests gathered for an Open Rehearsal of our latest venture, Mendelssohn’s Elijah. But soon, Chris Phelps, our Musical Director called us to order with a few warm-up exercises and we were off into a rousing chorus of ‘Help, Lord!’.

The afternoon was indeed an exploration into this amazing Oratorio telling the story of Elijah, the Old Testament prophet who called down a drought on the Earth because the people of Canaan had not listened to the true God but worshipped Baal. There ensues a famine, then miraculous rains; a huge battle against King Ahab in which thousands are slain and a jealous Queen Jezebel swears vengeance on the Prophet; revelations; fiery chariots with fiery horses and a whirlwind which takes Elijah to heaven. Such drama is reflected in the music with stirring choruses and descriptive arias, but there are also beautiful melodies and reflective passages for soloists, choir and audience to relish.

We listened to recordings by different choirs and conductors, we sang some of the choruses, and we learnt about the composer Mendelssohn, who conducted the first performance of Elijah in Birmingham Town Hall in 1846 to great acclaim! We will be performing this masterpiece along with Colchester Symphony Orchestra and some brilliant young soloists, in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on Saturday 23 November at 7.00pm. It is the season of mists and yellow fruitfulness, darker evenings and the SESAW £1 at Newton Green! Yes, we are back at the Village Hall, School Lane, CO10 0QS on 12th October with bargains for friends, family and pets, a raffle, homemade refreshments, free entry and parking. Meanwhile, at the Sanctuary are several dogs in need of new loving homes.

Bruno is a two year old Jack Russell and Chihuahua cross. This little chap loves his walk and is fine with dogs his own size but afraid of bigger dogs. He would best suit an adult only household or maybe one with older children only. We also have Boris, a friendly Bedlington cross, only eighteen months old. He would do well with a hearing companion dog as he is deaf. Lady is a friendly, two year old female crossbreed. She needs an active owner as she is full of energy, would do well at agility and should be the only pet.

As the days grow shorter we spend less time in the garden but there is something interesting going on in the shed. The fundraisers are busy sorting goods for the £1 Sale and they always include lots of doggy treats so I think it’s time they were supervised by me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

The DIY Deli Gravadlax Gravadlax is dry-cured salmon or trout, the key ingredient (apart from fish) being fresh dill. It is expensive to buy, but the price is not justified given how easy it is to cure at home.

Special equipment needed Fish pliers; tweezers will remove the pin-bones if you have a grip like a vice; but purpose made pliers are much better; an excellent example is available from Wüsthof, priced at around £35. A long sharp (not serrated) knife with a straight edge; knives with any curvature on the edge present slices of uneven thickness with wastage at the edges. A plastic board that is longer than your fish. A glass, ceramic or food grade plastic dish long enough to contain your fish and wide enough to lay the fillets side by side. Lots of cling film. Scales capable of weighing 10g or less.

Ingredients 1 large trout or small salmon about 1-2 kg, head off; it is better to use fish that has been previously frozen as this minimises any risk of bacterial infection; Sea salt, soft brown sugar:- 20g of each and 1 tsp of freshly ground black pepper per kilo of filleted fish; A large bunch of dill; 1 tbsp gin per kilo of fish (optional, but it does have a tenderising effect on the brown meat around the lateral line of the fish); 1 red beetroot - around 50mm in diameter for 1 kg of fish; 60mm for 2kg; Extra virgin olive oil.

Method 1. Fillet the fish into two sides, skin on, or get your fishmonger to do it for you; weigh the fillets to determine the amount of cure needed 2. Locate the pin-bones by running your finger along the fillet from tail to head; when pricked withdraw the offending article with your pliers 3. Freeze the boneless fillets and thaw when ready to cure it (optional) 4. Take a piece of cling film at least twice the size of the dish and place centrally, overlapping the dish on all sides; sprinkle salt lightly over the film that is in contact with the base; lay the fillets on the salted cling film, skin side down, with the thick edges touching 5. Mix the sugar salt and pepper together and sprinkle onto the fillets to achieve an even coating; rub in to ensure there are no voids 6. Lay half the dill on top - no need to take it off the stalks 7. Drizzle the gin, if desired, over the prepared fillets 8. Place one fillet over the other and wrap tightly in clingfilm to make a package that doesn’t allow any movement between the fillets; you will need at least two layers; return this wrap to the dish and place the board on top. Add weights such as glass paperweights or a dish of water.

9. Place the dish in the fridge and cure for 3 days, turning the wrap and replacing the board and weights every 12 hours; there may be a little seepage, but this is not critical 10. Remove the package from the fridge, unwrap and rinse off the excess cure with cold running water; pat dry with kitchen paper and set on fresh cling film, skin side down 11. Spread the remaining dill over the fillets; grate the peeled beetroot on top to cover them evenly 12. Drizzle a good amount of olive oil over the dressed fillets, but not enough to flow over into the dish 13. Pack the fillets in cling film as per step 7 and return to the fridge (without weighing down) for 6 hours, turning the package once after 3 hours 14. Open the package and carefully remove the beetroot and dill; pat dry with kitchen paper 15. Place the fish on a suitable board and slice thinly at a 45˚angle, tail first, with the sharp edge of the knife towards the tail. The slices should take the form of a letter D. Serving suggestion: this is excellent served as a starter with salad, in sandwiches, or as the star item on canapes.

Storage: not suitable for freezing once cured; covered with cling film it will keep in the fridge for up to a week.

Hadleigh Swimming Club News It’s been a while since Hadleigh Swimming Club has shared what they’ve been up to but there has certainly been lots going on. Many of our swimmers (and one of the coaches) took part in this year’s Great East Swim at Alton Water back in June – a rare chance for competitive open-water swimming in Suffolk.

That month also saw the final two rounds of the Suffolk ASA Summer League, where the Dolphins gave one of their best team performances for some time – well done to those who represented HSC. July saw the season close with an open meet hosted by TeamIpswich Swimming - the fun and prizes helped make up for the weary swimmers who were ready for their Summer break. September saw the new season open with a sprint meet at Felixstowe and the swimmers blew the cobwebs off with some encouraging performances. Now it’s heads down to get into shape for our annual Club Championships where we all come together for fun and the chance to take some club records. Good Luck to all our competitors. Our fingers are also crossed for former club member, Elliot Gladwell and our Team Manager, Val, who are both jetting off to Florida in October to take part in the World Biathle Championships. It just goes to show how far a start at Hadleigh Swimming Club can take you. We have been delighted to welcome new members over the past few months and the club is thriving. Suffolk Rockets Netball Club The last few months have been very busy for the club getting ready for the new season. In July we had our annual presentation evening to celebrate all the players achievements during the season, Congratulations to Tanya Cotter who was awarded Outstanding Adult Player of the season and to Charlotte Clay for Outstanding Junior Player, both players showing commitment to their Netball journeys as well as starting their umpiring qualifications.

We are extremely proud of our u14 team who managed to secure a place in the East Regional u14 division 1 league for the 2019/2020 season, this is a huge achievement for the club and the players and the girls will be playing some of the biggest clubs in the east region. The team had their first game on the 8th September and they won 30-23.

Also on the 8th September our adult teams took to the court in the pre season league tournament, it was a fantastic day, well done to Suffolk Solar who got runners up in Division 2, and Suffolk Rockets who also finished runners up in Division 1. A great start to the season!

On the 15th September we entered 2 junior teams into the Sudbury Adult tournament, its very important some of our junior players get to play senior netball, it provides them with a different experience especially a more physical side to the game. Our teams did fantastic, our u15 team finished 3rd in the Cup division, and our u16 team won the Plate division. Our u15 team was the youngest team in the competition, to finish the day in the top division and finishing 3rd was fantastic.

The Rugby World Cup is Back!!

(But Japan is a long way off) While Hadleigh RFC might not boast a stellar line up we offer the chance to watch live, highly competitive rugby in your own town.

The Ram’s home fixtures over the next few weeks are: 28th September against Sudbury II 19th October against Braintree II 26th October against Halstead Templars Match Report - Saturday 14th September 2019, Eastern Counties Division 1 South. Hadleigh 24, Colchester III 28 The Rams used this game against a strong Colchester team to blow away the cobwebs of a pre-season lacking warm up games. That being said, Hadleigh started well, with Mikey O’Halloran touching down after Jake Kerr’s break and chip ahead in the second minute. The rest of the half saw the home team concede a shower of penalties resulting in nine points and regular good field position for Colchester. On fifteen minutes, one such penalty went for a lineout on the Hadleigh 5 metre line. The attacking team were able to add a further seven points from a simple catch and peel move. The boot was on the other foot late in the half when a quick tap penalty saw Kerr cross the Colchester line. He converted his own score. Disorganisation in the Rams defence from a scrum on the stroke of half time gave the away side an easy seven points and a lead of thirteen at the turnaround.

Hadleigh regrouped in the interval and started to take the game to their opponents from the kick off. One flowing end to end move nearly resulted in a try. But with a tighter defence more dominance in the scrum and greater accuracy with the ball, The Rams started to really push on. They were rewarded on 50 minutes when Shawn Van Rensburg was able to evade the first tackle to crash over under the posts. Kerr converted. Five minutes later, O’Halloran spotted a gap behind the defence and sent a perfect chip over for Kerr to gather and touch down. With the conversion missed, Hadleigh had pulled themselves to within a point of the men in black. At this point, despite solid defensive work, Hadleigh showed their rustiness with some questionable decision making. The final score went to Colchester when their full back slotted a penalty from a scrum infringement.

Overall, Hadleigh will be pleased with their performance. More game time and work on certain areas will lead to more consistent play from a young side that showed great enterprise and outscored their opponents by four tries to two.

Lily-May meets Lily-Hilaria On a recent Monday morning at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club the youngest and oldest lady members met by the putting green. LilyMay Humphreys aged 17, fresh from her victories in the Welsh Ladies, the Irish Women’s Open and appearances for England was very happy to have a conversation about how to navigate the greens at Stoke.

Lilian Osborne, a mere 72 years older, has been a member at Stoke since 1983, when she joined with husband Fred. Lily’s competition golf is now confined to the putting green since taking a fall on the course two years ago. She always supports all the Ladies main competitions and still enjoys a weekly game of Bridge with the Lady Vets.

First Team Round Up Our busy fixture schedule continued during late August and September with matches up to September 14th mentioned follow my last notes a visit to F.C Clacton saw us gain a point in a 1-1 draw our cause not aided as we were down to ten men for some of the second half due to a second yellow card. Haverhill Rovers at home saw us gain three valuable points as we ran out winning 6-2 which set us up for our home F.A.Vase tie against Stotfold we repeated our last match score as we ran out winning 6-2 to gain a home match in the next round hosting Haverhill Borough, Stotfold's cause was not aided losing a player with only five minutes played to a straight red card. A mid week trip to Stowmarket saw us return empty handed losing 3-0 before a long trip to basement side Gorleston saw us gain a point in a 11 although with the chances we created this is a match we should have won.

Haverhill Borough we next up on 14th September in the next round of the F.A.Vase which saw us winning 5-2 to see us in the First Round proper away to Leighton Town (Leighton Buzzard) on 12th October.

Reserve Team Round Up An away trip to Wivenhoe Reserves saw us return home with all the points winning 8-2. Woodbridge away was next up in a Chell Trophy first round match which saw the result at 0-0 at full time so into a penalty shoot out to decide the winners with us winning by 4 penalties to 3 to see us host Halstead in the next round. Three points dropped in the next match on 7th Sept as we put in a below standard performance to lose 3-2 against Walsham-le-Willows but we got back on track on Tuesday 17th as our short trip to Whitton Utd saw us win 4-1 to gain three points Under 18's Round Up Wednesday 4th Sept saw us host Wisbech-St-Mary in the first round of the F.A. Youth Cup, which saw us put up a gallant fight but the visitors proved to strong in all areas to see them run out winning 6-1 on the night. Wednesday 11th Sept saw more Cup action as we hosted Kirkley & Pakefield Royals in a Suffolk F.A Youth mid -week cup match, with manager Tom Camp strengthening his squad, this match was played at a competitive pace which saw us win our first competitive match of the season 4-2 and a place in the next round Hadleigh Veterans (the golden oldies!) Both teams won their respective opening league matches of the season on 1st September, Sunday the 8th saw both teams in League Cup action with the Vets winning away at Kesgrave the ‘Brettsiders’ were beaten in a penalty shoot out by Lowestoft Town Vets, this despite coming from behind in normal time to get ahead only to let the lead slip.

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex What a summer it has been for cricket – from England winning the World Cup to Ben Stokes’s heroics at Headingley – and it has also been one to remember at the Meadow. The 1st XI enjoyed their most successful season since 2013, finishing in 3rd place in Division 1 of the Two Counties Championship and winning silverware as Suffolk’s leading club. After Hadleigh’s Under-19s before their several years of struggling T20 final v Woolpit near the foot of the table no one could have predicted how Ben Wallis’s team would perform, but two additions have made a huge difference. Our overseas player Kudzai Maunze scored over 1,200 runs, including seven centuries, and took 38 wickets. After a slow start he found his form, ironically, after breaking a finger, and since July has been almost unstoppable, reeling off ton after ton. He has made a great impact with his coaching too. On his return to the club Dom Manthorpe has also been exceptional, making 700 runs and taking 37 wickets with both spin and seam bowling – sometimes in the same spell or even over!

The 2nd team also joined in the fun, finishing in 6th place in Division 5. They have also endured some lean seasons but from almost the very first ball at Maldon in April this was to be a different story. Three wins at the start were followed by five out of six at the end, the highlight being a thrilling 1-run victory over Harwich in August. 14-year old Isaac Toombs has batted superbly all summer, scoring 500 runs at an average of 35. Elder statesmen Simon Gladwell (26 wickets) and Bloss Tampion (29 wickets) have once again carried the burden of the bowling, but they are looking at the progress of Oliver Clark with interest, with the hope of a little less work to do! Archie Wilkinson had a few games at the back end and upstaged everyone with a phenomenal innings of 181 at Earl Stonham. He hit 14 sixes, almost hit his own car, did smash the windscreen of someone else’s car, and was only out going for six sixes in one over. This was the 3rd highest individual innings by a Hadleigh player of all time, and the 7th best in all England and Wales club cricket on that day!

We also reached the final of both T20 competitions. Our Under-19s were beaten by 44 runs by Woolpit in the final played at Hadleigh, and the boys will rue the 50 extras they gave away in Woolpit’s huge total of 194. The seniors beat Woodbridge in their semi-final but Haverhill were too strong for them in the Plate final. But both teams can be proud of how they have performed. The Ladies had something of a stop start season and didn’t win as many games as they would have liked, but were not always able to call on their strongest players. Nia Evans had a breakthrough season with the bat, scoring 152 runs and only being dismissed twice.

Off the field we finally completed the pavilion project, replacing the 55-year old windows and doors, built a new paved area for players to sit (which, remarkably, they did!), held many fun events including Cocktail, Karaoke and Race nights, and the bar, taking inspiration from my batting and fielding, went contactless. It has been a fantastic season. Let’s do it all again next year!

Stoke by Nayland Ladies’ Results Sumbler Trophy - On Tuesday 10th September the ladies from Stoke by Nayland had an end of season meal and presentation for the Sumbler 9 Hole Stableford competition that is only played throughout the summer months on a Tuesday evening. The competition is played alternatively on the Gainsborough course and Constable courses each week. The best two scores from each course over the summer are added together to find an average amount of points scored giving you the winners.

In third place this year were Pamela Randle, second place was Amanda Hall and in first place was Corinne Jackson with an average of 19 points.

Ladies Medal competition - The ladies at Stoke by Nayland played a Medal competition this week on the Constable course. The ladies LETAS tour was being played this week on the Gainsborough course and several ladies had volunteered to help with marshalling, ball spotting and score board duties, so there was a slightly reduced field in this weeks competition, however the late summer warmth was enjoyed by all along with the dry fairways giving the balls plenty of run, the greens were also very quick which made the putting rather tricky. The overall winner was Debbie Howlett with a Nett 74, second was Katie Clark with Nett 75 and in third place Clare Nixon with 76.
