The Swifts are coming...

In recent years there has been a noticeable decline in wildlife in general, which can largely be attributed to loss of habitat. Hadleigh Environmental Action Team are keen to do what they can to help reverse this trend and their latest project sees 88 swift nesting boxes installed all over Hadleigh. Swifts traditionally nest in the eaves of older buildings that tend to have lots of nooks and crannies. However, modern building techniques are denying the swifts access. The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) reported losses of around 45% of the UK population in just under 20 years (19942012). The swift is one of the most amazing birds to visit our town and we really don’t want to lose it. It arrives in our skies in early May and is one of the most graceful of birds, spending most of its life in flight.

It feeds, drinks, mates and even sleeps on the wing, only coming to earth to nest and this is when we hope the new nest boxes will make a difference. The boxes have been put up on 25 properties across the town. So a huge thank you to all those who have offered to share their homes.

Each site has 3 or 4 boxes, mounted close together and quite high, under the eaves. There is no guarantee that any of the boxes will be occupied, but each property has been equipped with a ‘swift call kit’, an electronic device which gives out a call to attract the swifts. Being very inquisitive, the swifts will fly low to investigate the calls and hopefully, those looking for nesting sites will spot the boxes. There are still ways to get involved with this project and HEAT are asking everyone to keep an eye out for swift activity, especially around the new boxes. A less obvious way that you can help is by encouraging insect friendly planting in your gardens. Swifts eat flying insects such as aphids, flying ants, mosquitoes, hoverflies and small beetles.

The current boom in cycling is nothing new! This photograph shows a group of Hadleigh Cycling Club members posing outside the railway station with their magnificent machines, circa 1890.

The cumbersome Penny Farthings required considerable athleticism to ride, which may account for the fact that most members are young and look reasonably fit.

The decade of the 1890s is sometimes referred to as the “golden age of bicycles”.

The invention of the “safety bicycle” in the late 1880s, with two wheels of the same size as opposed to the high wheelers, provided a lighter and mechanically-simpler machine. Mass production at reasonable cost made them more accessible to the ordinary man and woman. The popularity of cycling was to soar, with clubs springing up in many towns and villages, including here in Hadleigh. By 1901, total membership was 83.

The “cycling season” was restricted to the warmer months, during which there were usually 24 “runs” or excursions. Outings could take the form of a “capital spin” through nearby villages; in July 1896, members were to enjoy afternoon tea at the George Inn, followed by cricket in Hintlesham Hall Park. Expeditions further afield were also planned, to Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and Colchester, often using the convenient train service from Hadleigh to extend their reach.

The club was well organised: an AGM was held each spring at the start of the season, usually in the White Lion Hotel, where officers were appointed to both the mens’ and ladies’ sections. Leading lights included Theophilus J Spooner, coach smith and cycle maker of Angel Street, who was captain for many years (in 1892 he had “attended every run since the formation of the club”) and Charles Verlander (registrar of births, marriages and deaths, of Bridge Street) who was Hon. Sec. and Treasurer. Sir J T Rowley was President.

This image and five other similar photographs, originally owned by Mr Spooner, were possibly displayed at club headquarters (whereabouts unknown). To date, there is no means of identifying the men or women in them, except perhaps in one case.

A bugler was thought necessary to warn other travellers and pedestrians of approaching cyclists - at the 1901 AGM, Mr George Kedge [of Layham] was confirmed in the post. Two photographs include an individual with a bugle hung around his neck. Could this be George?

Woodlands Nursery opening at Kersey Mill Woodlands Nursery is owned and managed by local mum Emma White. Emma has run Small World Kindergarten & Montessori in Ipswich (an Ofsted outstanding nursery) since returning to Suffolk from London in 2014.

Emma is passionate about creating beautiful and stimulating environments for children which promote active learning through experiences. Woodlands Nursery will have forest school sessions built into a routine that will embody all that is good from Montessori’s ethos. The timber-framed design and classroom layout of open shelving will offer abundant and constantly changing resources to encourage children to choose and return their own activities.

Woodlands will incorporate science and discovery areas, a literacy area that supports mark making/art and design, maths shelves with exciting and approachable games plus construction and small world play areas. Underfloor heating adds to the cosiness of the book corner and kitchen role play and sand & water tables encourage imaginative play.

Access to the enchanting, enclosed wooded garden as well as the grounds, makes Kersey Mill the most idyllic setting for Woodlands. Children will be actively encouraged to support and engage with their environment, growing food, recycling and re-using as much as they can, so that they nurture the next generation, to be conscious of their planet.

Woodlands will offer healthy and well-balanced meals and snacks, using locally produced, seasonal ingredients to influence the menu.

The Nursery will be open five days a week from 8.30am –4.30pm, term time and a permanent holiday club that offers an all-year option.

Alongside the Nursery, Woodland Babies will host a daily timetable of baby & toddler sessions that run from 9am-10am.

Membership means they can offer two hours of childcare after each session, in the knowledge that your child is being well-cared for in a nurturing environment.

During this time, they hope to offer wellbeing classes that focus on women’s preand post-natal care and other workshops on topics such as sleep, breastfeeding and weaning. They hope to collaborate with other Kersey Mill occupants such as Pilatesworks for these classes.

“I’m delighted to be opening another nursery in such an inspiring and beautiful location.” says Emma. “Kersey Mill is very well-known to me, and I have always felt that a nursery would complement the many different businesses based there.

A new local film about The Hadleigh Smugglers Young local writing team Alfie Cutts and Harrison Drane, alongside their production team and large cast, are hoping to film a production this summer detailing the stories of the infamous ‘Hadleigh Gang’ Smugglers.

The story is set in 1745, and follows Tom Tippenham, a leading smuggler who is tasked by gang leader John Harvey to receive one last Cache from Sizewell, near Leiston, before distribution. But as authorities close in, things go desperately wrong in Sizewell...

Town Mayor’s Update One of the lesser known responsibilities of the Town Council is to have in place a plan to deal with the first stages of a large scale emergency, before the utilities and emergency services can arrive and take over. Hadleigh’s plan is now a little long in the tooth, and we have begun the process of updating it. Councillor Gordon McLeod has put in huge amounts of terrific effort to get the plan developed. This has involved a lot of preparatory work with local volunteer bodies and other people who have responsibility for elderly or vulnerable people like the care homes.

There have also been discussions with the emergency services and with the utility companies, which have had to take place privately because their own plans have security and commercial implications which must remain confidential. For the same reasons, the plan itself cannot be a fully public document and cannot be opened up for public consultation, much as we would like to. A version that omits the sensitive issues will however be placed on the Town Council website for you to see once it is completed.

We are now at the stage where we need to ask for your help. Our feeling is that the most dangerous and most likely emergency where we have to rely on our own resources for some time before outside help can arrive is the combination of the roads being cut by snowdrifts, accompanied by a loss of power to all, or a large part, of the town. There are others, of course, but in general if we get this one pinned down, the others will fall into place. The biggest impact such a combination would have will inevitably be on the elderly and vulnerable, and the first step will be to identify these people and bring them to the Rest Centres – the Leisure Centre and/or one other near the High Street which we are still deciding on. The aim is to ensure that these residents are kept warm and given hot food and drink while we wait for the power to be restored where they live. We already have a variety of tried and trusted volunteer networks we will be able to call on, and it will be important that the person who arrives to escort them to the Rest Centre is someone they know and trust.

What we need a better understanding of, though, is what physical resources and expertise we have within Hadleigh. For example, we may need 4-wheel drive vehicles to carry people to the Rest Centre, especially from the outlying parts of the town. If roads are blocked by fallen trees or crashed vehicles, it will be important to know if anyone here has the right vehicle and equipment to help clear them, so that outside help can reach as us soon as possible. The key to all this is a cascade of phone calls (via mobiles) activating all the various volunteers who are willing to assist the effort. If you think you have equipment or expertise that could be useful, and would like to be part of the plan, please get in touch with the Town Clerk via the Council’s website to find out how.

We would like to thank all who entered our Easter Bonnet competition and our Easter raffle last term. We raised £98.00 and we have used this along with the kind donation from James Rose and Plant Parts to begin the update on our outside area.

Create your very own Summer Sanctuary - courtesy of Hollow Trees Farm One constant over the last year has been the ability to raise our spirits by growing plants. House plant sales are booming like never before. Even the enormous Dutch horticultural industry is currently struggling to meet the demand for all types of plants. This tightening of supply has reinforced our commitment to growing as much as we can here at Hollow Trees Farm.

We do rely on other specialist growers to supply us with cuttings and plug seedlings. Last year this supply stopped just as we were getting going in March. Thankfully, so far this year, despite some shortages the supply of young plants to us has been much improved. On arrival, these seedlings have been lovingly 'pricked out' by our dedicated Horticultural Team and are now ready for you to create your very own sanctuary. It looks like a stay-at-home summer, so grab your plants now and bring colour and tranquillity to your home and garden.

Memories Cafe, Lunch Clubs and Cinema

Memories Cafe In March and April’s Community News you could see some of our members receiving their weekly newsletters and cakes. This month you can see Sue, the Cafe co-ordinator, and Val, the cook, in the Ansell Centre as they prepare for the weekly distribution. We can’t wait for the day when the Ansell Centre will be buzzing with conversation and laughter again as it is meant to be.

Now that many of our members and volunteers have been vaccinated, we are looking forward to opening the doors to the Memories Cafe again during May. Our first Cafe get together will be on 20th May in the URC garden. If you’re passing and would like to drop by for a cuppa and to find out more about the Memories Cafe, then please feel free to do so. All members will be contacted with details.

In the meantime, we will continue to deliver weekly newsletters and cakes.

We would like to say a big “thank you” to Kathryn Grandon for a generous donation to the Memories Cafe. This will enable us to continue our services to our members during the time of lockdown when we have no regular income.

Lunch Clubs The Wednesday Lunch Club is planning to hold an event on 19th May and the Friday Lunch Club on 4th June. These will not be our normal two course lunches but will be coffee mornings or afternoon teas. All members will be contacted beforehand and given full details.

Hollywood in Hadleigh Digital Cinema We are not able to hold our first film showing until June. We would love to open our new season with “The Dig”, but unfortunately this film is on Netflix and is not available for public screening so we plan to show two films which we have had to cancel twice due to the pandemic – “Little Women” and “1917”. Let’s hope it’s third time lucky! Later in the year, all being well, we would like to show some of the films which were awarded BAFTAs this year, but we can’t show them until their mainstream cinema season is over. In the meantime, here are some dates for your diary – June 11th - “Little Women” at 2.30 pm and 7.30 pm July 9th - “1917” August 13th - not yet decided There will probably be two showings for each film in order to maintain social distancing and all seats will have to be booked in advance. Please note, no booking will be taken until 1st June. All details will be in the June Community News and on our website.

An exciting new novel by a local author

Local author Peter Holland's novel is set in Hadleigh in 1793, exploring the lives of workhouse inmates and those who had control over them. Small children like Amy and Jamie, teenagers Ben and Sarah, adults Gracie and Martin, as well as the elderly Daisy and Evy; their lives were controlled by those with power, from the workhouse master and mistress, Daniel Ward and Tess Yates, to the minister of St Mary's, George Watson, the town doctor, John Parsons, and men of business with vested interests in using the inmates as a source of cheap labour.

Below are brief extracts from this exciting new novel: Chapter 1 Benton End Farm An army of flies seemed to hang in suspension above the surface of the river, drawing the children towards the riverbank for a curious, closer inspection. Sarah held the hand of the youngest, eight-year-old Amy, lest she tumble down the bank into the River Brett. There was no danger of drowning at this point in the river’s course at this time of year. Just half a mile downstream from Hadleigh, where the Brett gently meandered past a group of cottages and a farm collectively known as Benton End, Sarah’s concern was the chastisement she and Amy might face from Mr Ward if they returned to town in wet clothes at the end of their day of labour.

Chapter 6 Commerce: ‘Does Mr Brownwigg like a tidy mill?’ Ben asked.

Steven smiled, replying, ‘Mr Brownwigg likes a profit, Ben. Keeping the mill tidy is of more importance to me, the miller, as a miller’s enemies include dampness and rats. So, we try to ensure the grain and flour is stored in dry places and there is little or none lying about to attract those hairy buggers with long tails.’

Ben smiled as he listened to the miller, then asked, ‘What about at night, when rats are more commonly seen?’ ‘We have our night watchmen, or should I say night watchwomen,’ Peter said with a smile.

‘Really? Who are they?’ Ben asked. ‘Yes, where are they?’ Will added.

Steven looked around. ‘Well there’s one,’ he said, pointing over to a wooden store.

Then he whistled and called, ‘Betsy! Here girl!’

On the roof of the small store sat a large cat, almost entirely black except for a white patch on its chest and four white paws, which it was licking as it sat in the afternoon sun. The cat looked up when Steven whistled and called, but in the nature of cats did not bother to move from its place of comfort. However, below where the cat lay, a small dog appeared from the shadow of the store.

Chapter 7 Rowland Taylor: In bright sunlight Sarah paused on the path that wound between the graves on the patch of land between the guildhall and St Mary’s…

She wondered who they were? Families like Pegg and Petfield, whose gravestones stood tall, proudly recording the lives of respectable people with wealth…

But behind that frontage lived her fellow inmates, who if they died would not be buried in that patch of land just yards from where they lived, worked and slept.

It saddened her to think those Christians residing in the guildhall, who attended church each Sunday, would not be buried here amongst the fine white gravestones, instead laid to rest in spare patches of ground in paupers’ graves. It was still consecrated ground, but the only marker might be a wooden cross that would eventually rot leaving no record of who laid beneath the soil. If there were several paupers to be buried, they would share the same grave.

‘If I took my life, would it be such a sin?’ she thought, but what scared her more than displeasing God, was the thought that her family might not know where she was buried. ‘How many months or years would pass before a wooden cross with my name would disappear, leaving no trace?’

Hadleigh women on 2 wheels Hadleigh Cycling Club welcomes women who enjoy cycling and those who wish to gain in confidence and fitness. In our experience cycling is a safe activity for everyone and promoting safe cycling is a core aim of the club. The Club is very aware that women are a small minority of cyclists, and is keen to address this in whatever way we can.

For the last three years Hadleigh Cycling Club has run Get Back on your Bike sessions for women of all ages who want to improve their cycling skills.

Gale Pryor, Coach and Committee member said, “Since we began the sessions, we’ve had a terrific time. Some riders were complete novices when they started, others had simply lost their confidence. We’ve gone from the playground, to the Railway Walk and onto the road, in 6 weeks. Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Hadleigh North Ward – April, 2021 Manor Gardens Bridge Many residents have been contacted me and with the help of the Suffolk Free Press and the East Anglian, pressure was brought on M &S and we have now ensured the bridge is opened for the summer months prior to handover of the land to Babergh.

I advised McCarthy & Stone to seek insurance cover and add the bridge to their portfolio of business assets, which they have agreed to do. M & S have been awaiting a definitive response from brokers Aon, following communications with them and responses to their multiple queries. M & S have confirmed that the underwriters have agreed to extend the policy and will hold public liability on the footbridge until it is transferred to Babergh. I’ve received confirmation that it can be reopened with immediate effect. M & S Contracts Team and Customer Services Building Team will undertake works to remove the security measures.

Furthermore, I’ve asked the contracts team for an update to the remediation works in respect of the landscaping which is required to be reseeded. Dead trees have sadly had to be removed but remnants will be left to encourage more wildlife and for environmental reasons.

Locality Budget Application Babergh have created an action plan to improve and strengthen wildlife and plant life in the Hadleigh area. Babergh are offering free trees and hedgerow plants, as well as asking for help in locating areas for wildflowers regardless of whether you are planting on council, parish, church, or private land.

All you need to do is let Babergh know what you want to plant and where. Helpful tips for submitting your application submit application by Wednesday 30 June 2021. Applications should include details about the area of land available, and any indications of the age and species of trees you would like to plant, for example, this could be new hedgerows, creating orchards, or planting to fill gaps in an existing tree or hedge row line.

Applications for more mature tree planting on the edge of developed areas, in towns or villages or as focal points in green open space are welcome. Tree and hedge saplings are expected to be delivered to parishes for planting from midOctober 2021 onwards. Long term care and maintenance of trees and hedges planted under the scheme will be the responsibility of the parish or community group concerned.

Following both councils opting to prepare a Joint Local Plan in 2016, careful consideration has been given to how the districts will balance the delivery of housing growth, important infrastructure, and essential employment, while safeguarding our natural and historic environment until 2037. Residents, local businesses and other stakeholders were invited to have their say on proposals at a public consultation in 2017, when more than 14,000 representations were received.

This helped inform the preferred options consultation in July 2019, during which a further 4,000 comments were made by consultees. Public feedback has been reflected in the final version of the plan, which outlines how and where future development should take place – enabling Government housing targets to be met, whilst also supporting the councils’ ambition to build thriving communities.

Providing the facilities needed to keep pace with growth, such as schools and GP surgeries, forms a key part of the plan and is detailed in the Infrastructure Delivery Plan.

Importance has also been given to sustainable development and transport options, as well as protecting and enhancing the districts’ natural environment and heritage, meeting Babergh’s commitment to addressing climate change and increasing biodiversity.

The final version of the plan was debated by Babergh last year before councillors moved to submit the plan for examination by the Secretary of State, after a sixweek period inviting representations on the legal compliance and soundness of the plan.

There’s an unusual sight – Kenny still tucked up in Rolo bed at lunchtime! Seems the little chap is under the weather leaving the computer clear for me to give you a cat’s eye view of life at SESAW. Like most animal charities, we’ve had few dogs in since Covid. Those that have arrived are generally very needy, requiring special new homes. Rolo, a Yorkie cross and Nokie, a terrier cross, are not moving on anytime soon. The five year olds are great friends but trouble with humans. Both need special homes with someone prepared to give them time and space. An experienced owner will end up with a rewarding relationship with one, or maybe even two, of these dogs if they are the right person.

Some become permanent residents like Bobby, a Nokie terrier rescued from death row in a London dog pound. After failing to find his forever home he settled nicely with dear old Maisie, a springer spaniel who loved her life at SESAW despite health problems. Unfortunately we lost her last year but Bobby has a new long term pal. Bruno is a terrier chihuahua cross, people say he’s a bigger version of Kenny which I can confirm. That pesky dog likes to sleep in the airing cupboard but he doesn’t dare challenge me if I get there first!

Which reminds me, time to see if Little Lord Fauntleroy is up and about. Yes, as I approach the kitchen I can hear him yapping to greet me. Ollie (the Black) Cat. Hadleigh Community Primary School HSA Easter Cake Competition Although limited with fundraising events that we can carry out, we launched an Easter cake design competition open to children in all year groups at Hadleigh Community Primary School.

The children had fun designing their dream cake.

We had some fabulous entries for our brand new HSA Easter Cake Competition and were overwhelmed by the support we received from Terri at EriVica Cakes in the High Street. She found the entries very difficult to judge as so many children had put in so much effort. We had entries from Nursery right up to Year 6.

A very excited Rose won in Year 2 and had her design made up into a stunning cake in time for Easter. She was very popular in her family as they were all able to share in her prize!

Terri very generously donated her time and talents to the HSA and did everything for free! She was so impressed by the entries that she wanted to donate a 2nd and 3rd prize of a set of Easter cupcakes which went to Shivahni and Catherine. She then went above and beyond donating individual cupcakes to 12 runners up.

Certificates were also awarded and Terri displayed the entries in her shop window.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) Covid Vaccinations Update.

The vaccination programme continues apace at the Hadleigh Health Centre with at least one session most weeks and more if vaccine is available. Pfizer and AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccines have been given on different occasions with Pfizer requiring a 15minute rest after the jab.

The Practice’s achievement for first vaccines within cohorts 1 to 5 is most impressive; with well over 95% completed in those age groups.

Second booster jabs of both types of vaccine has already begun. During the continuous five days in April 2,400 jabs were given with a weekday average of 390 rising to 585 per day at the weekend. On several occasions there were as many as 7 ‘jabbers’ injecting patients with admin personnel keeping the records.

In May cohorts 4 and 5 will be invited for their booster i.e. all those 70 years and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals and all those 65 years and older respectively. As always this is subject to the availability of the vaccine.

PPG members and other volunteers have enjoyed manning the car park throughout the sessions which have sometimes started at 8.00 a.m. As the cohorts are getting younger and sometimes the weather is better more people are walking to the centre. This makes a huge difference to the logistics in the two car parks.

Once in a while there is queue outside the Practice due to patients arriving exceptionally early, strict social distancing in the Waiting Room, medics replacing their vaccines or the odd IT hiccup. On the whole people are very patient, understanding and good humoured.

Following NHS England’s guidelines, the Practice is working steadily through the various age groups or cohorts. Much admin time has been taken trying to reach all members of each group if their first attempt to offer an appointment was not successful. No need to call the Practice to find out when it is your turn as patients will automatically be contacted.

How Headway Suffolk has helped its community during Covid Local charity Headway Suffolk, which supports adults living with brain injury, stroke and neurological conditions, has continued to help its clients throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. As the peak of the virus struck, Headway had to close its Bury St Edmunds hub, its four outreach hubs and its face-toface support and therapy services, as well as drastically reduce the number of clients at its Ipswich hub. Like many charities, we feared for our financial stability and survival.

We saw a big increase in demand for our homecare services from Suffolk County Council to help hospitals with the discharge of patients. To support those isolated at home, we adapted and created new services. We implemented a virtual hub so clients could access rehab and social activities remotely and provided free devices. Activity books were also sent out to help stimulation. To combat the difficultly of visiting Supermarkets and getting online deliveries, we produced and delivered nutritional hot meals and registered as a food bank to supply parcels of food and essential products.

Counselling sessions moved to remote support and saw an increase due to clients feeling anxious, while our phones were open to offer a friendly, listening ear. With gyms being a no-go zone, we supported clients at the local outdoor gym in between lockdowns so they can work on their fitness, improve mental health and play sports.

As things gradually began to ease, we have been able to resume some faceto-face services and clients can now get support with physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy.

Our Ipswich hub is now open Monday to Friday and our Bury St Edmunds hub is currently open Wednesday to Friday. We operate strict infection control procedures and our staff team will be fully vaccinated in April having received the first dose. Headway Suffolk would like to thank everyone who has supported us and ensured we continue to survive and thrive into 2021.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As we enter late Spring, with the days getting warmer and longer, and the natural splendour of South Suffolk’s countryside brimming with activity, it feels like everything is awakening. We are beginning to meet friends and family once again, and our reopened shops and hospitality venues are starting to bustle. Step Two of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown has allowed a great many freedoms to return, and I am looking forward to Step Three, which is expected to start on 17th May, when the majority of our everyday activities will be permitted once more.

Of course, these relaxations around the Covid-19 measures are only possible due to the lockdown that we entered at Christmas, and our brilliant, world-leading, vaccination programme. Locally the roll-out has been particularly impressive, with our CCG network consistently sitting above national averages for vaccination rates across the population. As the first dose was successfully delivered to the top nine priority cohorts, we are now focusing on administering the second doses to the most vulnerable. In the over-80s locally, over 80% have already received both injections.

But we are not just targeting the most vulnerable groups. In mid-April the first dose was extended to the over-45s, giving your Member of Parliament the chance to join the ranks of the first jabbed. So, on a very sunny Saturday morning, I headed into Hadleigh with my three sons for a mass haircutting (as many constituents have kindly pointed out over social media, I was in grave need), and afterwards went to the Hadleigh Health Centre to receive my AstraZeneca injection. The actual jab was quick and painless, and I would encourage all my constituents to take up their offer when we reach their cohort.

Whilst the local position seems brighter than we might have reasonably expected only a few months ago, we have to remember that this remains a global pandemic.

One only has to look at the many nations in a far worse position than us to realise that risks remain. Nevertheless, we are finally getting back to some kind of ‘normal’ and that could yet herald a wonderful summer.

CIFCO portfolio nears completion Property investment company CIFCO Capital Ltd is set to increase the £1.5m it has already ploughed back into council services so far this year – with the purchase of a Coventry trade park. The Pilot Trade Centre in Coventry – bought for £5.54m – is the 19th property to be added to CIFCO’s portfolio and is set to bring in approximately £300,000 a year in rent.

CIFCO was established jointly by Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils in 2017 to generate income through property investment to offset reductions in funding from central Government. The returns received from CIFCO then meet the councils’ loan repayments, with extra income on top ploughed back into council services.

Since its launch, CIFCO has brought in £4.5m of net income to the councils, £1.5m of that the first three quarters of this year alone, at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has significantly affected other ‘traditional’ income streams.

Babergh District Council leader Cllr John Ward said: “The income that CIFCO provides is helping us to weather this global crisis and continue to provide the essential services residents rely upon. “Our draft budget for 2021-22 reflects some of the difficult decisions we face, but without the income we receive from CIFCO, we would be in a far worse position.”

Mid Suffolk District Council leader Cllr Suzie Morley said: “The virus has affected almost every business, but it is testament to CIFCO’s careful risk management and expertise in balancing its portfolio, that rent collection levels remain above industry averages and repayments continue to be made in full.

“The income from CIFCO’s completed portfolio will be invaluable in supporting the district’s post-Covid recovery, while its portfolio provides a legacy of properties for the benefit of residents for years to come.”

The remainder of the £100m investment agreed by councillors (approximately £15m) is due to be completed in coming weeks.

Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh 4 September 2021

Our gardens are growing and there’s hope in the air! We’re planning the open gardens event for 4 September this year because we can’t open them in May as we usually would. The event is always a big success because everybody enjoys visiting gardens, and the money goes to maintaining the fabric of our historic St Mary’s Church which dates back to the late 13th century.

If you aren’t already one of the 30-40 people who already open their gardens for the day, why not join in? Gardens range from small to large, lawns with flowerbeds, courtyards, those aimed at being a little oasis of calm, some aimed at attracting wildlife, those with vegetable plots or flowers, with trees or lots of pots, fountains, statues or gnomes - there really are all sorts and your garden will be welcomed in! Tomlinson Groundcare – We will miss the shows this year In a normal year May is one of our busiest months, exhibiting at the South Suffolk, Hadleigh and Suffolk Show, we haven’t missed one since the company started in 1991. The planning starts well in advance, preparing the machinery before the day and making sure everything is spotless, then fingers crossed for good weather. We have experienced everything from heat waves to snow and gales over the years! This is the second year without the shows at the moment, understandably organisers had to make the difficult decision to cancel them well in advance to avoid unnecessary costs.

It is a shame as the communities miss out on the opportunity of meeting local exhibitors, visiting the craft tents and the food halls. Families love seeing the various animals and exhibits and it is a good educational day out and there is always a good feeling of being part of something bigger.

Tomlinson Groundcare are keen supporters of the local shows and can participate in up to ten per year which provide the opportunity to catch up with friends, existing customers and meet potential new ones as well as help raise money for good causes. It also provides the chance for people to have a chat and see our extensive range of lawnmowers and of course our popular toy selection.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Now that spring has truly sprung I thought it would be a good time to write about a major new National Trust partnership project to plant blossom tree circles in cities across the UK. The project will take place over the next five years, starting with the London Blossom Garden, a garden to commemorate those who lost their lives to Covid 19. It is part of a wider plan to provide green spaces in urban areas, inspired by 'hanami', the traditional Japanese celebration of blossom and its passing beauty.

A little closer to home as part of the Sakura Cherry Tree Project which celebrates UK-Japan co-operation and friendship, more ornamental cherries are being planted in RHS gardens. In February and March this year RHS Hyde Hall planted 120 trees which will eventually form part of a new arboretum. The project aims to plant 6,500 cherry trees in around 100 different sites with good public access, throughout the UK. The photo this month shows the Cherry Orchard at Alnwick castle gardens, which has been established for quite a few years now and if you are up that way (when we can travel) then it is well worth a visit in the spring but the gardens are good value all year round.

Of course May is traditionally Chelsea flower show month but this year it has been moved to September, however if you have already bought the hat and ordered the champagne then there is an online event planned for 18th to 23rd May, go to 'rhs.org.uk/virtual Chelsea' to find out more. If you are staying at home this month there is still plenty to be getting on with in our own gardens, once the danger of frost is passed then you can get busy planting out tender perennials and bedding.

In the vegetable garden sow sweetcorn, runner beans and marrows under cloches early in the month and thin early sowings of beetroot, lettuce and and cauliflowers.

By the time you are reading this hopefully Lockdown will have started to ease and there will have been a successful re opening of Retail Stores and other services.

As you may be aware we took the difficult decision to close our Charity Shop in Needham Market at the end of December 2020 but we are still continuing to sell goods to raise money to support the children and their families.

To this end we have now opened an online Charity Shop on Ebay and hope you will continue to support us there. Many of the items listed will be available for local collection/delivery and so save on the cost of postage. If you have anything you think we may be able to sell to raise funds we would be very pleased to hear from you. We are also still collecting clothing and shoes which we can either keep to take out to the children and their families or sell to raise funds.

Meanwhile we are continuing to receive photographs back from Ukraine where the remainder of the Christmas stockings are being delivered on our behalf as we have been unable to get goods through to Belarus due to the current difficult situation there. At the moment Ukraine is suffering greatly from the effects of Covid with their vaccination program only just about to begin. Many people travel over 1.5 hours to work each day on crowded public transport and then carry the virus with them on their return.

Babergh communities benefit from £621,000 of council grants Babergh District Council approved community grants totalling £621,939 during the 2020/21 financial year – providing vital funding for organisations responding to Covid-19, sports and leisure facilities, and community venues across the district.

Over the past twelve months, the council’s communities team has worked closely with a range of local organisations to ensure grants will best meet the needs of Babergh residents, both now and for many years to come.

The council’s ongoing ambition for communities with bright and healthy futures has also been supported by the allocation of funding for sports organisations, play equipment, community woodlands and green space.

Long Melford Football Club received £75,000 in capital grants and Section 106 funding during the year towards its new clubhouse – safeguarding the future of the long-standing team, in addition to providing a multi-purpose facility for use by the wider community. Section 106 funding, collected from developers when they build new homes in the district, was also allocated to help revamp a popular skatepark in Hadleigh. Improvement works will see the installation of new equipment, as well as an extension to the park, which is used for skating, cycling and riding by local residents.

A host of other outdoor facilities benefitted from community grants allocated throughout the year, including over £60,000 towards new play areas in Newton, Holbrook and Brantham, as well as funding being awarded to Copdock Cricket Club to help refurbish the site’s car parking facilities.

Funding from the council has also paved the way for improvement works to various community venues across Babergh. The ambitious project to regenerate St Peters in Sudbury received £25,000 in capital grants (in addition to £75,000 in CIL funding) – helping transform the church into a cultural hub for activities and events in the heart of the town.

Chelsworth Church was also given £25,000 towards its conversion into a community facility, whilst £17,180 was allocated to Constable Hall in East Bergholt for a new kitchen and Pinewood Community Centre received £25,000 towards car park improvements.

As well as capital grants to improve facilities, the council awarded over £130,000 in revenue funding to support charities that provide for residents of the district, including Sudbury Citizens Advice, Quay Theatre, Community Action Suffolk, Homestart, the Bridge Project, Rural Coffee Caravan and Lighthouse Womens Aid, among others.

A new Locality Awards grant was also launched last April – enabling Babergh District Councillors to individually allocate funding, totalling almost £47,000, to deserving projects in their ward.

Tom Barker Assistant Director for Sustainable Communities commented: “The introduction of Locality Awards has allowed councillors to use relatively small amounts of money to make a big difference to local communities.

“This has not been at the expense of other funding, with the allocation of capital grants increasing by over 200% this year, compared to last – demonstrating our council’s continued commitment to investing in the community facilities needed for Babergh residents to thrive.”

Supporting the district’s ongoing response to Covid-19 also remains a priority, with a new Emerging Needs Grant made available to community groups and town and parish councils to help with increased costs incurred as a result of the pandemic.

Since applications opened last year, £70,744 has been allocated to 48 organisations, including foodbanks and mental health services.

This invaluable financial aid will continue as the virus and its aftermath remains, in the form of a new Covid-19 Recovery Grant, set to be launched next month, to allow communities to safely emerge from lockdown.

Hadleigh Walkers Finally, we will be able to walk again as a group and as most will have become tired of walking locally around Hadleigh we have decided to go a little further afield for our May walk. For this walk only, we will walk on the 3rd Saturday of the month on Saturday 22nd. We will meet at the Stutton Community Centre car park at 0930. The Community Centre and village shop is on the left hand side as you go through Stutton. Walkers are requested to park on the right side of the building on the grass. This is a nice walk which we have done from time to time and contains lots of interest for all tastes, particularly along the river Stour and through Stutton.

The route from the Centre is Queech Fm, Stutton Mill, Graham’s Wharf, Bay Tree Fm, Markwell’s Fm, Wall Fm Wharf, Holbrook Mill, Alton Water and back to the car park. The distance is a pleasant 10 miles. The walk has a number of potential “break” points to shorten the route back to the start for anyone in need.

If anyone is in need of transport please let us know and we will see if there is any opportunity for car sharing. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs.

Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year.

Rotary Review The Club is gradually coming out of hibernation or lockdown as it is commonly known now. The first coffee meeting of 2021 was held last week at Cobblers and enjoyed by the 6 members allowed under present rules. We look forward to resuming at least 2 meetings a month and a 2nd coffee meeting is planned for the end of April at the Club's usual meeting place, The George. This will act as the Annual General Meeting although again only 6 members will be allowed will the remaining members being kept informed by email. Far from satisfactory but the best that can be done in present circumstances. Hopefully full lunch meetings will resume towards the end of May although as things stand only 6 members at a time will be able to attend. A rota system will apply.

On the brighter side, most members have received their second Vaccination.

Members have not been entirely inactive during the past few months with those who can taking regular walks or exercise of some kind to keep fit. One member has walked the equivalent of Lands end to John O'Groats - an impressive effort.

She has also been volunteering at the Hadleigh Surgery to help with vaccination programme and has spent many hours there. Another member has turned his hand to housebuilding helping his son with this.

Now it is the turn of the golfers and bowlers with greens opening during the past 2 weeks or so.

Members have not forgotten their charitable duties and have recently donated further monies to the Club's charitable trust fund. This will be distributed shortly.

Rotary International has also been busy with members worldwide helping with the battle against Covid and Rotary's own Charitable fund - Rotary Foundation has dispensed some U$33 million in grants to help fight the pandemic. This is in addition to it normal charitable expenditure.

Parish Council Below are the main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 24 February 2021: • Public Forum Marquis planning application – the Clerk clarified the procedure for parishioners wishing to attend the Babergh Planning Committee meeting on 7 April. Mr O’Leary, the applicant, said all the objections had been taken into consideration and he had spent some time considering how best to reduce noise and modify the lighting to be less intrusive. In order to satisfy the conservation and ecological issues the height of the proposed new building had been lowered and he had agreed to plant more trees. A parishioner expressed concern about external noise; Mr O’Leary said the new patio would face towards the existing bridal suite and the building itself, in order to ensure music and late night noise would be kept inside.

• District Council report Councillor Ward said the situation with regard to Covid cases had improved greatly and Babergh had one of the highest vaccination rates, with nearly all those aged 50+ having received their first dose. Babergh and Mid Suffolk DCs had confirmed their support for Freeport East, which would encompass Felixstowe and Harwich ports, and the new Gateway14 business park near Stowmarket. In response to a question about ‘holiday hunger’, he said it had not yet been confirmed that the initiative would extended to cover the Easter holiday, but he was confident that it would be. A pre-election moratorium would be in place from week commencing 29 March; however, planning committee meetings would continue during this period.

• Speeding At the last meeting the working party had reported that Suffolk Highways had disagreed with both of the proposed locations and had suggested alternatives. The working party had subsequently surveyed these, but felt the alternatives were not appropriate. Highways had now agreed to the working party’s original proposal for the location of this pole. With regard to the northern end of the village, the proposed new location would require consultation with householders. In the meantime, it was agreed to proceed with a pole at the southern end of the village near Windy Ridge and purchase the SID device.

• National Grid proposals A briefing for Layham and Polstead parishes had been held on 12 March. National Grid said that, due to the additional off-shore generation and Sizewell C, there was a need to install more 400,000 volt circuits to channel the power away from East Anglia. In addition, there was a crucial need for an additional 400,000 volt double circuit from Twinstead to Bramford. The proposal was to remove the existing pylons and replace them with larger, higher ones to carry the new 400,000 circuits; this proposal was identical to the one proposed in 2012. Putting power circuits underground (as was planned for two areas of AONB), was felt to be too expensive. National Grid would shortly be holding a series of consultation meetings to which the PC would be invited; the working party was keen to work with other parishes to address the proposals.

• Quiet Lanes Suffolk The PC had registered an interest in the initiative in October 2020. Since then all parishioners had been consulted everyone and the responses taken into consideration. The working party felt there was enough interest to justify adding one or two more lanes, but felt a much greater response would have been needed to justify any more than that. Councillors voted to proceed with a Quiet Lanes scheme for Layham, and to submit the following lanes for assessment: • Water Lane and part of Mill Lane (same road number) • Shelley Road and Layham Road which connects to Shelley Bridge • North Hill – boundary of Shelley and Layham St.Andrew’s – your parish church Union flag at half-mast The death of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh on was marked in Layham by flying the Union flag at half mast on the tower of St Andrew’s Church. Thank you to John Cryer for climbing the long ladder in the tower to make possible this act of remembrance.

Annual meeting The Annual Parochial Church Meeting for St Andrew’s took place in April, and Christine Hempstead was elected to serve as churchwarden again; our thanks to her for all that she does.

There was lots of enthusiasm at the meeting for future events and plans, as life begins to return to something close to normal – hopefully commencing with a plant sale this summer. Layham Playgroup Welcome back to the summer term! With the warmer weather finally approaching, we have been able to explore in our garden a lot more. One of the children kindly brought in some sunflower seeds for us to plant in the garden. We are also hoping to grow some of our own fruits and vegetables to help fill our garden with scents and colours. We have also introduced a new literacy area to our setting.

Children now have a dedicated area to explore ‘all things literacy’ to support them with Communication, language and literacy skills. WATCH THIS SPACE… we are hoping to host a cake sale over the summer term to raise some vital funds for our playgroup. The Covid 19 pandemic certainly hit us hard when it came to fundraising as we were unable to do so in a safe manner. MAJOR PYLON DEVELOPMENT PROPOSED How will it affect Layham?

You will have received an information pack from the National Grid (NG) about proposed changes to the electricity networks in our area. NG are seeking your views. Please keep the documents safe - THEY ARE IMPORTANT! A similar proposal was made by NG in 2012 but this was shelved, and any comments that you may have then made about the pylons were shelved with them. If you wish any views to be considered you must submit (or re-submit) them before the 6th May deadline.

The wind farms off the East Coast and the proposed new nuclear power station (Sizewell C) will be generating electricity not just for our area but for large parts of the UK elsewhere. This means that East Anglia will get little additional benefit from the extra electricity generated but will have to suffer the downside of having extra pylons to carry it through our locality.

The NG are proposing to replace the pylon line, which runs through Layham between Pipkin Lodge and Pipkin House (Upper Layham) and South of Valley Farm and Popes Green Farm (Lower Layham), with a taller, heavier pylon line carrying a much higher voltage.

Currently, the smaller existing pylon line has 6 single wires suspended between each pylon. The proposal is to increase this to 18 (6 groups of 3) which will make these wires visually more obvious against the sky and will create more noise in moist conditions.

The replacement pylon line will be very similar to the other, larger, pylon line which runs between Layham and Hadleigh. This is much higher and heavier with the wires also in groups of three.

Pylons are not the only way to transfer electricity. Underground cables can be used instead. This is what NG are proposing to do in the Dedham Vale and other Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty but not our area as it is not designated as an AONB. This is not the full story, however, as another electricity line will be necessary between Suffolk and Essex and it is possible that the same pylon route will be used. This means that there could be three taller lines of pylons between Hadleigh and Layham.

Layham Parish Council has formed a working group, assisted by parishioners, to look at the NG proposals and to see what can be done to minimise their effects. There will be an extraordinary Parish Council meeting to discuss this on 28th April (details to follow).

Following this meeting, Layham PC will issue a statement which will help you to understand the NG proposals and we suggest that you delay replying to the NG document until you have read this as it will outline the full implications of this development.

Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together We are looking forward to an exciting summer term ahead. We hope that with the Covid restrictions starting to ease, we can start to introduce more events and activities throughout the term.

All of our children will take the opportunity to make good use of our outdoor environment, hopefully with some much warmer weather! The little ones particularly will enjoy a variety of forest schooling activities including; bug hunting and making a log circle to complement our tipis. They will learn to use lots of skills during this time and have lots of fun!

We will also be hosting an overnight camp adventure for our year 5 and 6 pupils from both Bildeston and Whatfield as we have not been able to offer them a residential over the last year They will enjoy two full days of fun activities. There is a huge emphasis on team building and we know that the children will get to know each other well before some of them move on to high school.

We are also delighted to say that our Year 1/2 area will be enhanced over the coming months as many of our current reception and year 1 children have not had a huge amount of time in school because of the lockdowns in place.

We have installed three new picnic benches made of recyclable materials in bright colours for the children to enjoy sitting at and particularly to have their lunch outside. Let’s hope that the April chills soon move into a bright and sunny summer.

Children in KS2 will kickstart the new term off with history WOW days where the children get the opportunity to come dressed as British monarchs or in Stone Age costume.

Lockdown Bears All of our children received their very own “Lockdown Bildeston Bear” during the spring term to say thank you for how they all managed the remote learning during lockdowns. We are super proud of them all and what they achieved and of course thrilled to have all of our children back in school.

District News from Kathryn Grandon Railway Walk Car Park As many of you may be aware, the Railway Walk car park has been in a terrible state of repair for a long time, mainly due to drivers parking on the grass verges and too many cars attempting to park in this area at a time.

This car park is intended for the convenience of users of the Railway Walk. Very severe damage has been caused over time and you may have noticed large, deep puddles and damage to the grassed areas.

The car park is finally going to be repaired. I have been trying to get this work done for a long time. It was scheduled to start on 12th April, but has been unfortunately delayed, but it will be started as soon as possible (I am expected to be informed of the revised date shortly). When the work does start, the car park will be closed for a week (assuming there are no ‘surprises’) while the refurbishment work takes place.

When completed, bollards will be installed to prevent parking off the car park surface, as the grass had been completely destroyed by overparking. The car park will remain a 5-6 bay car park (depending on the size of the cars) with additional parking parallel to the adjacent wall.

Although the parking area may appear to have been reduced, it will have been reinstated to its intended size.

New signage will be erected limiting the stay to three hours, and parking will remain free. The three hour stay will come in to force when the other changes to parking take place and this car park will be part of the regular patrols by enforcement officers.

Business Grants Isn’t it wonderful to see people out and about again? As I write this I am wearing short sleeves, the sun is shining, the sky is blue and our wonderful shops are open again. But lockdowns have been a difficult time for many people, for many different reasons. If you had a business that was affected by the lockdown and you have not applied to Babergh for a grant yet, you may be entitled to one. For example, the Local Restriction Support Grant (LRSG) is open until the end of June (for businesses that were mandated to close such as shops and hospitality), there are discretionary grants for those financially impacted (such as mobile hairdressers) and there are re-start schemes, which are specifically for those facing re-opening costs. Since March 2020 Babergh has paid around 7,200 (some multiple) grants from central government funds to businesses. If you think you or your business may be entitled to a grant, apply via Babergh District Council as soon as possible as some have limited availability.

New Pool I paid a visit to our wonderful new swimming pool on ‘opening day’. For a smallish town, we can consider ourselves fortunate to have such a fantastic new facility pristine, fresh, modern and in the centre of our town. So much thought has gone in to ensuring the pool meets most individuals’ and organisations’ needs. The swimming club and lessons have already re-started and there was a real ‘buzz’ about the place when I visited.

One of the great investments at our pool has been for a Changing Places room (fully accessible toilets designed with generous space and other equipment) – for people who need this, you do not need to use the pool to make use of the special Changing Places facility – the staff will be more than happy to welcome you and show you where it is located. The centre has taken great care with its Covid response, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and limiting numbers, among many actions. Now I have to confess, the part of the pool complex that I was most excited about on my visit was the sauna! It certainly looks very inviting – but sadly that is not allowed to open yet, but will open when government restrictions allow.

If you do want to head down to our fabulous new pool for a swim, remember that you have to book – you can do this online, but if you do not have access to online facilities, you can telephone.

And finally…

Lastly, it seems that some people are still talking about last summer’s dreadful one-way system and barriers in our High Street. This is a just a little mention to say that the Town Council and I were not in agreement with others in relation to this decision – we did not want any kind of one-way system (which came handin-hand with barriers) at all. But, let’s move forward and hope that our High Street has a successful and uninterrupted time going forward.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre This is better! Not only is the Centre open again, but I’m having a few of my riders back as well. Obviously we are not operating at capacity yet, there are many dear riders still missing from the timetable; we do hope to see them eventually.

The Centre is looking gorgeous with Spring hitting the Brett valley and making everything a nice juicy fresh green. How quickly memories of the frightful flooding and mud fade. I’m hoping the renewal of the earth is making all the people we care about here feel cheered up and positive too.

Of course this is the season for the live herd to shed winter coats so the yard is covered in hair. It gets everywhere and the brooms are kept busy. My picture shows Belle standing in a pile of her winter woollies just after the Easter break. She is giving Dillon his Monday afternoon ride in the second picture.

We hope for kind weather in early May to give our fund raising walkers a good day. I hear there are more plans afoot to keep the coffers filled, but you’ll have to hear about these from our webpage.

Meanwhile I must say thank you, again, to all the very generous people who have sent donations, some of whom wished to remain anonymous, so this is perhaps the only way we can show how much we appreciate their help.

My blog is necessarily short since there is little to report other than that we are so very happy to be open! May you all enjoy the easing of restrictions, and continue to live safely out there. Best wishes from all us very lucky live (and mechanical) equines.

LEJOG: Land’s End to John O’Groats Glenn Abbassi writes...

Early in January, I read an article encouraging people to walk 1000 miles in 2021, effectively from Land’s End to John O’Groats. This resonated with me, as I have always enjoyed walking, and I signed up on the Virtual Mission website.

This requires the entry of each day’s mileage, which is plotted on a map showing the LEJOG route.

Having input every day’s walking since 1st January, I headed north – via Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Birmingham, the Peak District, West Yorkshire, Northumberland, Edinburgh, Perth, the Cairngorms, Inverness, and on 29th March, after walking 1000 miles, I arrived at John O’Groats. To verify my mileage I input weekly screenshots on the website and have downloaded these as a record of my daily walks.

Some of the dog walkers, pedestrians, drivers and Hadleigh residents may now understand why they saw this old lady striding out every day on her own on a Virtual Mission!

I have now embarked on a virtual walk of nearly 1000 miles from Hamburg to Munich, via several other German cities which I visited in the 11 years I was an Anthony Nolan courier collecting bone marrow or stem cells for leukaemia patients. This is solely my own initiative and I haven’t set myself a best before date, so am under no pressure!

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice I recently become a carer for my partner who I live with and can no longer work. We’ve started falling behind on our bills and I’m worried our debts are only going to get worse. I’m on Carer’s Allowance but what else can I do to turn things around?

See if you can make any savings on your household bills by switching suppliers or changing deals. You may be able to get a reduction on your council tax bill speak to your local authority directly.

Try to boost your income too. You may be able to apply for benefits jointly with your partner to be paid alongside Carers Allowance. This could be Income Support, income-related Employment Support Allowance or Universal Credit.

You should contact your creditors and ask if you can reduce your repayments until you’re back in work. They can also freeze any interest and charges, so your debts don’t go up while you pay less. Check to see if you have payment protection insurance to cover giving up work to become a carer as well.

If you’re still struggling to cover your outgoings, it’s important to prioritise paying your household bills like your council tax and rent or mortgage.

If you are elderly or terminally ill and would like some help please contact us. The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity which seeks to relieve the anxieties, problems, and sometimes injustices, faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets, thereby saving a great deal of human sadness and animal suffering. The Trust was founded in 1985 by Mrs Averil Jarvis whose determination and dedication has ensured that the manifest need is fully addressed.

The Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. To this end it works in partnership with owners to overcome any difficulties that might arise.

A national network of over 17,000 community service volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem – for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner. A national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited.

The Cinnamon Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets.

Arrangements are made between owners and the Trust well in advance, so owners do have peace of mind in the knowledge that their beloved companion will have a safe and happy future. Emergency cards are available on request.

When a pet is in the Trust’s care either short term or long term because the owner is in care, the owner is kept in touch with visits, if possible, or regular photos and letters.

Dear Sir Congratulations to all those involved in the community flower planting projects and the erection of the new cycle racks. The first has been an ever more colourful display as spring has advanced, helping to brighten our ‘lock-down’ days. If you haven’t seen the display at the back of the Market Place, make time to view it - stunning. As to the new cycle racks, they are a welcome addition to the town centre. They are also attractive in their own right with tall planters at each end, with clear parking signs.

Dear Sir It is evident with vaccinations and excellently care by NHS staff many hospitals now have considerably fewer Covid-19 cases. However many of us will still have to contend with delays before being treated for other health issues. With some third of our population being obese and some being unable to exercise satisfactorily it would be helpful to remind all of the saying; “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”; “Breakfast like a King - lunch like a Lord and Dine like a Pauper”. When we sleep at night our body slows down and goes into a ‘protective’ state using very little energy. When we wake our body needs to ‘kick start’. If we do not eat within an hour of waking our body stays in this ‘protective’ and we lack the concentration and energy levels. We need the ‘fuel’ from eating to conserve energy - so eating breakfast also helps with weight management and our health generally. ...Better to eat earlier in the day than to eat much later in the day.

Dear Sir Rowland Taylors Ghost - Hadleigh has for generations been proud of its Martyrs, the most known of these being Rowland Taylor. We are aware that Roland Taylor was a Christian who stood firm to his belief’s, spoke publicly about them against the church of his time and subsequently lost his life in the most painful manner here in Hadleigh.

How appalling is it that an anonymous person is writing accusations about current members of the Hadleigh Town council in an online Hadleigh news page under the non de plume of ‘Rowland Taylors Ghost’. Taking the name of someone who died for his belief’s and not having the courage to use their own names. If Roland Taylors Ghost believes that what he writes is truthful then why is the Ghost not convinced of his belief and write under their own name.

If Roland Taylor had not been scattered to the winds on Aldham Common then he would surely have been ‘turning in his Grave’ Jan Byrne

What a great few weeks we have spent welcoming old and new gymnasts through the doors of Hadleigh Stars. It has been fantastic to see the children working hard and enjoying themselves. News from Stoke By Nayland Peter Blewitt Trophy: A midday start for the Peter Blewitt Trophy on the Gainsborough course at Stoke

By Nayland Golf Club in which 29 couples played an American Greensomes. Braving the cold and blustery conditions Glen and Corinne Jackson took the spoils with an impressive 41 points. Their round got off to a slow start with double bogeys at the first two holes.

However they settled into some better golf parring the difficult Par 4, SI 1, 4th Hole and then the Par 5, 5th hole which was back into the biting wind. A great birdie 3 at the 8th Hole helped them to 21 points on the front 9. The back 9 started with 3 pars which included the very tricky 10th and 11th holes. A treble bogey at the 14th dented their progress however Pars at 17 and 18 secured 20 points on the back 9 and 41 overall. 2nd place on count back with an equally impressive 39 points were Ian and Bev Thompson edging out Jill and Colin Pottle. 4th place were Barry and Lesley Hitchcock with 37pts.

Corinne & Glen Jackson winners of Men’s Section: Golf returned to Stoke By Nayland on the Peter Blewitt Monday 29th March after 3 months of lockdown and Trophy the men’s section wasted no time in holding their 1st competitions of 2021.

Maj Curtis, pictured, had a “Good Friday” winning the Standard Trophy singles Stableford competition scoring 37 points narrowing nudging Ian Carter & John Parkinson into 2nd & 3rd spots on count-back. Glen Jackson finished 4th with 36 points. There were 151 entries!

On a cold and breezy Good Friday, Maj relied on some consistent driving and steady putting which saw him notch up 9 pars in a round that also had 2 blobs (nil points). The course was playing long with little run on the ball so a Par at the SI 1, 4th Hole was a fantastic result. Maj also chipped in on the 13th for another difficult Par. Well done.

Sbn Ladies In Winning Form: Lesley Garnett and Debbie Howlett have played their way into the third round of the national Daily Mail foursomes competition Playing their match just three days after golf clubs re-opened following lockdown there was not much time for practice. However, the weather was glorious sunshine and the golf course looked wonderful.

Playing Mary Sparrow and Mandy Boutell from Fynn Valley Golf Club the match was nip and tuck for the first 6 holes. The match turned towards an advantage to Stoke when Lesley hit a magnificent shot out of the left hand bunker on the 8th to within a few inches of the flag to win the hole. At the turn Lesley and Debbie were 2 up and from there won more holes until gaining a solid victory on the the 14th green - winning 5 and 4.

They now wait for the draw for the next round, and a haircut!!!

Easter competition: On Thursday 1st April the ladies at Stoke By Nayland had their first competition after lockdown. It was fantastic to be out on the fairways again on a dry but chilly Thursday. The Easter 18 hole competition was played on the Gainsborough course in groups of 4 with the best two scores to count. Lady Captain Janet Hodge greeted the ladies on the first tee with a basket of Easter eggs and then Hot cross buns at the halfway hut at the 10th.

Corinne Jackson, Katie Clark, Clare Nixon and Jacqui Trudgett played well together taking it in turns to add points to the teams score.

The winners were 1st Corinne Jackson, Katie Clark, Clare Nixon and Jacqui Trudgett 81pts; Lesley Garnett 2nd Sue Spittlehouse, Roz Clements, Angela & Debbie Howlett Cudmore and Margaret Bentley 80pts; 3rd Diana Harris, Trisch Jackson, Alison Jennings, Edelman Rew 79pts; 4th Hilary Cairns, Nora Hutchinson, Karen Lewis, Johanna Stonehewer-Smith 74pts.

Jazz Galore Village fetes, beer festivals, WI events, weddings, charity fund-raisers...all booked for last summer and all cancelled or postponed. That's the story from Jazz Galore but members of the Suffolk group are hoping for better times this year.

They play for fun rather than profit and are available in a small format of perhaps three players; alternatively, the full turn-out could be up to eight. Either way they promise not to harm either your wallet or your ear-drums. They also guarantee to play a wider variety of good tunes than most groups.

Spring tennis in Hadleigh Hooray, tennis courts can be used again!

Since 29th March it has once again been possible to play tennis outside.

Hadleigh Tennis Club members rushed to play at the earliest opportunity with several groups playing on the 29th eager to see if they could still manage to connect racquet with ball.

Once again the Layham Road courts are echoing to the groans of frustration for a missed volley or smash and, the unfortunately, fewer cries of triumph for a winning shot. Members are looking forward to regular play both at club play and ad hoc at other times. Also a few matches with other local clubs are eagerly anticipated.

We have use of 3 all weather courts located on Layham Road next to the rugby club with “Club Play” sessions for members on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday mornings from 9.30am to 12.00 pm.

Unfortunately due to a fire towards the end of last year the floodlights are awaiting repair but this should not curtail play in the summer months.

Played before but a bit rusty? No problem, you can play a few sessions to see how you get on before deciding whether or not to join. We can put you in touch with local coaches if required. If you have young children who want to start playing there is an independent qualified coach who runs group sessions for children at the courts.

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex After a long winter lockdown, it was something of a joyful moment on 29 March when outdoor sports could resume, and the following day the nets were thronged with socially distanced cricketers on an unseasonably warm evening. By the following week it was snowing, of course, but that's cricket for you. The new season started on 17th April, with similar restrictions as players experienced in the short 2020 season - no changing rooms, teas and regular sanitising breaks. For spectators there are strict rules in place, with no access to our clubhouse apart from the use of the toilet, and an outdoor bar with table service only. It is hoped that as the season progresses restrictions can be eased in line with the government's roadmap, but just being able to start the season on time is something we are very grateful for. The 1st XI will have high hopes of a strong season after finishing 3rd in Two Counties Division 1 in 2019. Captain Ben Wallis has assembled a talented squad with a good blend of youth and experience, including some exceptional talents such as Suffolk Under-17s player Matt Kent and former Leicestershire II all-rounder Dominic Manthorpe, who were leading performers during last season's successful Atkins & Crane Cup win. They have a tricky start to the season with games against Witham and Wivenhoe, but I am sure will themselves be tough opposition for anyone. The 2nd XI also come into 2021 with some success after winning the Atkins & Crane Plate, and again their squad looks stronger than it has been for several years. New captain and former military man Adam Miles will be hoping his legions of assorted Tampions', Lockes' and Toombs' will get the better of their rivals in Division 5 and perhaps start an upward curve in the team's fortunes.

We also have our usual Sunday development side and Ladies XI, as well as two sides in the Suffolk T20 competition and an Under-19s T20 XI. Our juniors have over 50 fixtures across three age groups and six teams, so there will be plenty of activity on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at the Meadow.
