Hadleigh Choral Society at Snape It’s a cold, dark January evening but the Ansell Centre is buzzing with music and light as the eighty strong choir sing for the 15th time...‘and ye of the past… must…DIE!’ We’re rehearsing Edward Elgar’s The Music Makers and the timing is tricky to say the least, but we are determined to get it right! We are Hadleigh Choral Society and we are swapping our usual concert venue of St Mary’s Church for the illustrious surroundings of Snape Maltings Concert Hall on March 24th 2018 at 7.30pm. Rehearsals for the Big Concert are well underway and we‘re all so excited about singing two amazing Elgar works, The Music Makers and Spirit of England. The Music Makers is Elgar’s setting of an Ode by Arthur O’Shaughnessy, celebrating the influence of the creators of art and music on the shaping of the future. Elgar writes some wonderful melodic passages in this piece, but at other times the choir is expected to produce fire and passion in their singing. Spirit of England is based on the war poetry of Laurence Binyon, and is particularly poignant in this centenary year of the ending of WW1. It contains the lines made famous by repeated recitations at remembrance services, ‘they shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old...we will remember them’. Hadleigh Choral Society will be joined by the Kelvedon Singers and the Colchester Symphony Orchestra for this concert, all under the baton of our Musical Director, Christopher Phelps. We are also looking forward to welcoming back the well-known and much respected Piano Soloist, John Lill. John and the Choir have a long history of collaboration and it is a delight to have him playing with us once again. Tickets are selling well and are available from Choir members, the Snape Box Office (01728 687 110) and website. Prices are £22, £18, £15. An audience coach will leave Hadleigh at 4.30pm, arriving at Snape in time to have refreshments before the concert. The return coach will leave Snape at about 10.15pm. The cost of the coach is £6.50, phone Gill Riddle on 01473 670140 to book your place. Alternatively, email Liz Turnbull at re.turnbull@btinternet.com for any additional information you require. We would love to see you at our concert, our aim is to provide you with an exciting, uplifting performance and, of course, to be note perfect!
