Future plans for Corks Lane...

It was great to see those of you who attended the two public exhibition events held to show the proposals for the former Babergh District Council headquarters site on Corks Lane, Hadleigh. These events took place on 11th April and 18th April at the Cricket Pavilion and The Guild Room. The architects, Babergh officers and other people involved with the changes to the site were in attendance, as well as boards showing the plans for the site. The feedback from almost every resident I spoke to on both days was positive.

I thought this is an opportunity to show those who could not attend the exhibition what the Corks Lane site is likely to look like and explain the background. In 2016 Babergh members made the decision to relocate from the HQ buildings in Hadleigh to Endeavour House in Ipswich, sharing space with other public sector bodies including the County Council and also the Clinical Commissioning Group. The decision was a result of appraisals of the HQ site, which showed that they were no longer fit for purpose.

As a result of the move Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils will save an estimated £5.8m over the next decade in HQ costs. Public facing services continue to be delivered within the district, including from a public access point in Sudbury. There are currently discussions concerning an access point on a smaller scale in Hadleigh. Some of the people I spoke to at the exhibitions were concerned that the site was not going to continue as an employment site. Soft market testing to identify suitable options was carried out at an early stage. This process confirmed that demand for commercial office space in this location is extremely limited and that there was no demand from providers of care homes and hotels. The assessment work has concluded that the only viable use for the site is residential.

A wonderfully royal wedding and a reminder to protect your interests

By Holmes & Hills Solicitors The recent royal wedding no doubt got the many other couples getting married this year excited about their own wedding day.

Perhaps it also acted as a reminder to finalise the last of the arrangements. It reminded us here at Holmes & Hills about the importance of Pre-Nuptial Agreements. Although Pre-Nuptial Agreements are certainly not romantic they are practical and as family lawyers we are now drafting more and more of them for couples, young and old, eager to protect their interests. Although PreNuptial Agreements are not part of legislation in this country, the Courts can take a Pre-Nuptial Agreement into account when looking at how to divide the matrimonial assets in divorce proceedings.

When the matrimonial Court look at how to divide the matrimonial assets in divorce proceedings a Court will consider all the circumstances of the case, the first consideration being to the welfare of any child of the family whilst under 18. The Court has a duty to achieve fairness and can look at a PreNuptial Agreement as part of the circumstances in the case.

A Pre-Nuptial Agreement should provide for any children of the family or have provision for any future children after the Agreement. The Court will want to make sure that both parties have received full disclosure of the other party’s financial circumstances; have had independent legal advice and fully understood the advice and terms of the Pre-Nuptial Agreement.

Your Pre-Nuptial Agreement can and should be tailored to your individual circumstances. We all enter into a marriage with the very best of intentions and hopes for the future, however, divorce and separation are a reality that impacts a lot of people. Divorce and separation can also be a very emotionally difficult time. A Pre-Nuptial Agreement can assist the parties in dividing their assets at that time thus avoiding negotiation, confrontation, disputes and unnecessary cost at the time of divorce or separation.

When communication is good you can clearly detail exactly how you would want your assets to be divided in the event of separation or divorce in the future. We can address any issues that arise and provide for them. More and more couples are seeing the benefits of Pre-Nuptial Agreements and they certainly have their advantages.

Summer Concert: 6.30 pm June 10th St. Mary’s Church, Stoke-by-Nayland For our summer concert this year, we are returning to St. Mary’s church, Stoke-by-Nayland – a church with freally great acoustics. Our programme will include some wonderful music by Dvorak – the ever popular Slavonic Dances as well as the final two movements of his 8th. Symphony. Also included is the waltz from Tchaikovsky’s music for the ballet: The Sleeping Beauty, some Irish folk songs, and ‘Singin’ in the Rain’.

As usual, we do not charge for admission, but invite you to make a donation as you leave towards the cost of the concert and a good cause. We hope that this programme will encourage you to make the journey to Stoke – we look forward to seeing you all again.

SITE CONSTRAINTS While we all love the location, residents who attended the exhibitions will be familiar with the constraints (as well as the opportunities) that the site presents. These include the heritage aspects, such as the five historic buildings (including Grade II listed) and Bridge House, which is in poor condition. There are further constraints as the site is within a Conservation Area, a Special Landscape Area and parts of it lies within an area of Archaeological Interest. In addition, the site is within a flood risk zone and will have high redevelopment costs and financial viability considerations.

Following the soft market testing a number of different options were considered for the site and these were presented to representatives of a local sounding board in November (and again in April following feedback from the Hadleigh events). A preferred option was selected to develop further to form a proposed masterplan; this was based upon liaison with statutory consultees, the scheme’s cost and financial viability and local planning authority preapplication advice. The proposed scheme was then presented to the Suffolk Design Review Panel in March.

THE OUTCOME The site equates to a total site area of 1.22 hectares/3 acres.

The proposed numbers of new homes (houses and apartments) are 58: this will be a mixture of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and 3 and 4 bedroom houses. There will be provision for residential and visitor parking on site which has been designed to meet the Suffolk parking standards.

The green space adjacent to the river and the public footpaths will be retained and memorial trees will be relocated within the existing site. The footpath from Bridge Street to the footbridge will remain. The design team have worked hard to retain the listed buildings, to enhance the setting and provide high quality new-build housing all of which is sympathetic to the character of the town.

Some other buildings are also being retained. The proposed development will contribute to the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) which is a payment made towards local infrastructure such as highways, education and healthcare to address any impacts arising as a result of the development.

A total of 132 people attended across the two public exhibition events, which is approximately 2% of the total population of Hadleigh. To date the council have received 61 written responses.

A summary of the results of the feedback from the exhibition demonstrates that 84% of people who attended the events agreed in principle with the redevelopment of the vacant site for residential-led purposes. A scheme submission to the Local Planning Authority is estimated for late summer 2018.

While many people were understandably concerned about the future of the Corks Lane site, you can be reassured that Babergh is acting as quickly as processes will allow to develop the site and that this development will enhance the setting and is mindful of the environment.

Art Club Activities for June. Flowers are blooming and they will play their part in the first session of the month. 5th June; Bring some flowers and capture them in watercolours, oils or acrylics. On the 12th of June we have engaged a sitter for a portrait session. 19th June; We turn our attention to boats, sailing or moored, large or small, warships or even submarines, (better bring references). On the 26th, (which is the final meeting of the club until the 11th of September), we go out on location; painting or drawing in Crabtree’s garden.

We will hope for a fine day the garden there is very attractive. So until September we will ach enjoy well earned holidays. Take your paints and sketch book with you wherever you go. In the first session in September bring along your holiday sketches.

It is not only your garden that has sprung into life with the promise of sunshine.

The team at The Bildeston Crown has been simply bursting with fresh ideas this month.

Starting on Sunday 3rd June we are introducing “Sunday Sharing” – available for tables of 4 or 6....or more! This special menu, which will be served alongside our usual Sunday menu, is designed for those who enjoy the informality of a “family” service where your table is presented with a beautifully sharing platter for diners to serve themselves to what and how much they want to eat. For June we are serving locally reared Suffolk chicken, but plan to change the featured roast every month.

We are particularly delighted to welcome Marisa Leo to Bildeston next month.

On the 21st June, the knowledgeable Marisa is our wine expert for the very special 4 course dinner matched with Sicilian Colomba Bianca wines – only £49 pp. The invitation to join us is hopefully “an offer you can’t refuse!”

Whatfield Players A totally new show is now planned for October. "SALMAGUNDI" is the working title.It will feature songs from stage and screen....well known family favourite musicals like, Jersey Boys, Oliver, King and I and the Sound of Music. This will be allied to drama and comedy to carry through the subjects of the songs.

Notable in our last show, "Show time 11", was the variety and amount of musical talent, keyboard, cello, ukuleles, trumpet,guitar, and our own vocalists, and visiting singers.This is likely to increase for "SALMAGUNDI" . Our new directors Martine and Shirley will come up with a show for the whole family.

Town Mayor’s Award 2018 On the 24th April 2018 at the Annual Town Meeting Hadleigh Town Mayor, Councillor Yvonne Free, presented Mrs. Pam Jacobs with the Town Mayor’s Award for the charity work she has done over the years and especially for the Hadleigh Elderly People’s Welfare Committee.

Pam moved to Hadleigh in 1982 and was the warden at Inkerman Terrance for 2 years, Then moved to Sydney Brown Court in 1984 until retiring in 2000 It was when Pam was working at Sydney Brown Court, that she got to know Beryl Allen and Winnie Lockwood, Beryl was the chair person of the Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee and Winnie ran the over 60’s Wednesday Club, and they joined the lunch club at Sydney Brown Court which Pam organised for the residents and was also joined by the ladies of the Wednesday Club. It was at one of the lunch time lunches that Winnie asked Pam if she could help her out at the Wednesday Club as she was to have an operation on her knees, and somehow Pam is still there, taking over from Winnie when she retired. Pam was voted onto the committee of the Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare in November 1997, then in September 2003 was voted onto the executive committee. In September 2005 was voted vice chair to which Pam still remains in that post, When Beryl sadly passed away Pam did not want the post of chair because she felt that she wouldn’t have time to carry on doing what she really enjoys Pam was also on the committee of the Ansell function room club when it was first started, Pam can’t remember how it happened but ended up cooking lunches at the Ansell Centre for several years and they won an award (Babergh Community Achievement Award 2008). Pam also runs the lottery bonus ball every Monday at Sydney Brown Court and bingo on a Tuesday night she also is a member of the Monday Club and do the transport for some of the ladies and help out by doing the bingo once a month and Pam is hoping to continue for many years, and in Pam Words “God Willing”.

Hadleigh Armistice 100 100 years ago the First World War ended and a new world began. The example and experience of those who lived through it shaped the world we live in today.

In 2018 The Royal British Legion is leading the nation in saying Thank You to all who served, sacrificed and changed our world. The Thank You campaign will run from 8 August up to Remembrance Day. Here in Hadleigh we have a number of commemorative projects underway and the community are invited to get involved. County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser Over 6,500 potholes repaired in Suffolk since January Suffolk has seen over 7,000 potholes repaired since 1 January 2018; with a further repair works scheduled over coming weeks as the county council continues its war on potholes. Since the start of 2018, Suffolk Highways (SH) has received approximately 11,500 pothole reports from members of the public, some of which are duplicates. This is double the number received during the same period last year; demonstrating the impact that the severe winter has had on the county’s road surface.

SH has made some significant steps forward to deal with the high volume of reports. Additional gangs have been brought in to undertake pothole and road repairs across the county, different materials are being used and existing resources are being diverted to help deal with the backlog of reports. They have also begun trialling a new approach using a machine called a ‘Roadmender’. This is a highways vehicle with an asphalt mixer on the back.

It works by keeping the material at a consistent and ideal temperature for compaction and only uses the quantities needed, limiting any waste material.

This is an alternative treatment technique and the results are currently being analysed.

In April 2018 Suffolk Highways’ surface dressing programme began. This is an initiative where £21m has been borrowed to fund the resurfacing or redressing of a quarter of Suffolk’s roads over the course of this council term.

The first step of the programme is to undertake road repairs and preparation work which will include repairing potholes. Surface dressing involves laying stone onto a binding substance and is carried out between April and September. It is a treatment that minimises disruption to road users, local businesses and emergency services. It also improves skidding resistance, helps to make the road waterproof, protects against frost and water damage and is cost-effective normally lasting between 6 to 12 years. It is my intention to ensure that roads in Hadleigh requiring a complete repair of this nature, gets it! Suffolk Highways will continue to routinely inspect the county’s roads, from once a month for mains roads, through to once a year for more rural, less used roads. These safety inspections will pick up every defect that meets the intervention level as set out by Suffolk Highways. Local Businesses raise over £5000 for Royal British Legion with Charity Ball Hadleigh Team Manpower is a team of cyclists who will be taking part in the Royal British Legion ‘Pedal to Paris’ in August of this year to commemorate the 100year anniversary since the end of the first world war.

The ride is approx. 300 miles long, spread over 4 days in the saddle covering poignant areas of the Somme, Picardy and finishing under the Arc de Triomphe. The team’s members have a wide range of age and ability and includes local business owners Will and Charlotte Dykes from Hadleigh Physiotherapy and Richard Pettit from Highcliff Vets. The 9 strong team must raise a minimum amount of £8,100 but have set their sights on raising £10,000 for the charity.

On Saturday 5th May, they held a charity ball at Hadleigh Town Hall with a three-course dinner prepared by Chef Noir, an auction and raffle followed by music provided by 23X. The auction and raffle prizes were kindly donated by local businesses and due to the amazing high quality of prizes, the guests showed their generosity and supported the cause in splendid style. The final total has been announced at £5,837.46. Auction prizes included an Audi TT for the weekend, various hampers from Adnams, a weekend in a holiday cottage in Woodbridge with dinner at the Kings Head, crystal earrings and a 7-course golf package from venues or clubs across Suffolk.

Milden Singers Spring Concert On a glorious weekend the Milden Singers provided enjoyable and entertaining Concerts to their loyal audiences. The main structural repairs to the underside of the Hurst Frame are complete so now we move on to the upper section called the bed. The bed is home to 3 pairs of mill stones. The lower stone that remains static is called the bed stone also known as the nether stone and rests 20 25 mm beneath the upper service of the bed. The bed stones sit on oak stone beams that are fixed to the upper part of the Hurst Frame in a square shape that allows the main drive to pass through the bed stone to the runner stone and control its height and of course rotate it. The bed stones are firmly wedged and encased by 4x3 larch timbers that also create a base for the floor of the bed to sit upon and that is made from 7 inch larch floor boards.

The hole or “eye” through the bed stone that allows the spindle to pass is normally square and has an iron or wooden bush or neck/box to exclude the grain. For lubrication this would normally have been packed with binder twine dipped in melted mutton fat or candle grease. The iron Glut boxes have brass inserts adjustable with metal wedges which are tightened with screws from beneath to the side of the runner stone which are fixed with a bush or metal paddle to augment the action of draught and fiction in sweeping the meal round the annular space between the stones and stone case so that it passes through an orifice or spout otherwise some meal is lost.

The stones at Kersey Mill have not been in use for at least 100 years, so new and repaired parts to the Glut box are required. Paul Willis and Glen Hart of local Company Armour engineering are pictured removing the rusted and broken, damaged and ceased parts in readiness to reinstate to working order once new parts have been made and repairable parts repaired. The stones are incredibly heavy with some of the runner stones weighing around half a ton.

FitFrame Physio I am a Physiotherapist that specialises in musculoskeletal problems, womens health and running. This month I wanted to focus on a womens health problem.

1 in 3 women suffer with some form of incontinence, the most common being stress incontinence. It is common but it is not normal!

Stress incontinence means that you leak urine when you increase the pressure on the bladder, e.g. when coughing, sneezing or with exercise. It happens when the pelvic floor muscles that support the bladder are weakened.

Causes of a weak pelvic floor include child birth (particularly after instrumented deliveries), obesity, and increasing age (particularly after the menopause). The good news is that pelvic floor muscles are just like any other skeletal muscle in your body. This means that if you do the correct exercises, and do them well and to the recommended frequency, the muscle strength will improve and incontinence will reduce.

If you are experiencing symptoms of stress incontinence it is important that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t suffer in silence but see a womens health Physiotherapist. The physiotherapist will take a full history and then complete an assessment to determine what is causing the incontinence. The assessment will commonly involve a postural assessment, 'tummy gap' check and pelvic floor assessment. When patients first see me they commonly tell me that they have been doing pelvic floor exercises but are unsure if they are doing them correctly. I use a real-time Ultrasound unit which enables you to see the muscles working on the screen - this can be really powerful for reinforcing the correct technique. Treatment then focuses on addressing any muscle imbalance or malalignment, guided pelvic floor exercises and pilates-style core strengthening.

When the golden retrievers arrive at Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Hadleigh, there are instant smiles on the faces of residents Owner Valerie Lavender of Coram Street, Hadleigh, is proud of the magical effect that her three dogs have on people who, in some cases, are living with dementia. Mrs Lavender, of Coram Street, Hadleigh, has bred and shown golden retrievers at Crufts for 40 years and signed up to the charity Pets as Therapy (PAT) three years ago following visits to St Helena Hospice in Colchester to see her friend. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The dogs were such a tonic, lifting peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spirits, that they asked me to come back,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love my dogs and they are such a pleasure to share.â&#x20AC;?

Mrs Stevens, the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities coordinator, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seeing the dogs can Resident June Ede with Flora trigger happy memories for people living with dementia and they cheer up everyone they come in contact with. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For many of our residents had dogs and other pets throughout their lives and some lived on farms with dogs around them.â&#x20AC;? Last month I was delighted to host a meeting with Councillors from South Suffolk’s parishes regarding neighbourhood plans. The meeting, which was held at Hadleigh Town Hall, was well attended with representatives from many of the villages across the constituency.

The purpose of the meeting was clear; I wanted to impress upon those gathered the necessity of drawing up a neighbourhood plan, and allocating sites within that plan. A neighbourhood plan is a way for parishes, or groups of them, to have greater control over development in their area. The plans cannot stop development but there is no doubt that a community without such a plan will be more vulnerable to speculative development than one with a made plan and where – crucially – they have used the plan to allocate sites for new housing.

What does ‘allocating sites’ mean and why it is so significant? The answer is that I have not known a community yet that is unable to answer fairly forthrightly the question of where they don’t want development to go. Allocating sites is the much harder question for communities of where they do want it. But by going through that process and drawing up a plan with a reasonable allocation of homes for the future, the neighbourhood plan has far greater weight in law.

I would describe this as the classic trade-off between ‘pain’ and ‘gain’. There is no point denying that the process for a community to allocate sites could be very controversial and divisive. But going through that pain brings the gain of far greater control in future, and the likelihood that housing numbers in the area will be more sustainable than in the absence of such a plan.

Of course, neighbourhood plans are not just about the number of homes, but also about the type and design of new developments. Hence, given the importance of these subjects to my constituents, I hope that my meeting can be a catalyst for communities to get activated and plan for a sustainable future.

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Get hay fever help and advice from the pharmacist As the hay fever season begins people who suffer from the allergy are being encouraged to visit their local pharmacy – rather than their GP - for help and advice. You don’t need a prescription for hay fever tablets, eye drops or nasal sprays as these items can all be easily purchased from your local pharmacy or supermarket. The NHS in east and west Suffolk spends around £450,000 annually on hay fever and allergy prescriptions and more than £3 million each year on prescription medicine that could be more cheaply purchased at the pharmacy. Dr Mark Shenton, a GP in Stowmarket and Chairman of NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “With an estimated one in five people suffering from hay fever, the next few months could be an uncomfortable time for them, with symptoms including a runny, itchy or blocked nose, sneezing and itchy, red and watery eyes.

“As a GP I would advise most people that the pharmacy is the place to go for advice and treatment. One of the best ways to control hay fever is with antihistamines, which you can buy without prescription from the pharmacy.

Start taking them now so they can get into your system. Taking antihistamines regularly is much more effective than taking them only when your symptoms are bad. “Some people think they need to see their GP for a prescription for hay fever medicine, but that’s not the case. By going to the pharmacy you’ll be saving yourself time, freeing up GP appointments for people with more urgent needs as well as doing your bit to help the NHS save money on unnecessary prescription costs.” Dr Christopher Browning, a GP in Long Melford and Chairman of NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Make your pharmacy the first place you go for help and advice with hay fever. Many pharmacies are open long hours including evenings and weekends and you don’t need an appointment to speak with the pharmacist.

“You can help protect yourself from hay fever symptoms by wearing wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes. Taking showers and changing your clothes after being outdoors helps prevent pollen spreading around your home. His two chosen charities are the Arthur Gaell For Apprenticing Foundation and Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance.

Here we go again. Once the nesting season gets under way the influx of baby birds and chicks starts and Mum is kept busy responding to the constant demand for food. In between the feeding sessions Hettie, the ex battery hen wanders around the sleeping dogs, softly clucking and scratching at the floor then wanders out again to dig up Mum’s plant pots. She must have developed a dislike of communal living because she ‘don’t dish the dirt with the rest of the girls’. Instead Hettie prefers her own little nesting box in our back porch where she sleeps and lays her eggs.

Over the last few weeks the children have really been getting into the swing of their French lessons! We have practiced numbers, animals, and some basic greetings and language. They've really enjoyed this, which is set to continue next half term.

We have also been continuing our trips to the local care homes and this week we made crispie cakes with the residents to sell at their cake sale fund raiser! A big thanks again to the scouts who have ferried us to the more further care homes! This half term our external sports coach has been (as usual) fantastic and we have enjoyed everything from tennis to rugby! Big thanks to maxim sports who are consistant in delivering fun sessions that even run alongside our development framework without the children even noticing how much they are learning!.

Investigation highlights costly dangers of inheritance planning gone wrong The dangers of investing money in the unregulated inheritance planning industry have been laid bare following an investigation by the BBC's Money Box programme into an Ipswich firm that claimed to protect assets against charges for care. Clients of the company mentioned in the report revealed to the BBC Radio Four programme that they had been told they could avoid care home fees by transferring their assets into a trust. Their estate, after death, would then be passed on to their family. However, a number of those who paid a fee of around £3,000 are now concerned that they have lost control of their savings, claiming they have been unable to contact anyone from the company. One client told Money Box they tried to release funds from the trust to help their son buy a house but have been unable to do so and now fear for their savings. Police told the programme that two people have been arrested on suspicion of fraud and subsequently bailed in connection with an investigation into the company.

In England anyone with assets of more than £23,250 in savings and property is expected to pay for care in older age. The issues highlighted in the programme raise huge concerns about the unregulated industry of inheritance planning. Vintage Market Draws Visitors To Town If you wandered the streets of Hadleigh on Saturday 12 May you might have seen a flurry of activity around the Market Place square.

It was in fact the second Vintage & Collectables Market in 2018 held in the town.

Organised by Be, who has a shop of the same name in Market Place, Be says “Many High Streets in the UK are suffering as people increasingly shop on line and do not use local shops. Following a visit to a busy Vintage Market in a town some 10 miles from Hadleigh, which draws such huge crowds it was difficult to find parking and the wait for a coffee was long as everywhere was packed, I was inspired to replicate the same for Hadleigh”. The preview Art & Music concert for the Festival took place on 21st April at St Mary's Church. The triple bill opened with the Hadleigh Ukulele Group performing a lively set of popular numbers such as You Are My Sunshine and Livin' Doll. Serendipity, the choral society's small choir followed with big classic anthems and pop songs such as Bridge Over Troubled Water and Georgia On My Mind.

The finale was a selection of English Folksongs and timely Shakespeare inspired melodies performed by the strings section of the Hadleigh Orchestra.

News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) Squirrels have enjoyed learning about Growing this half term. The children have enjoyed planting and growing their own cress, spinach and peas. In our outdoor area we have been planting sunflowers and poppies and are waiting for them to appear. After reading Jack and the Beanstalk, Squirrels then planted their very own beanstalks! We are enjoying seeing the different stages that the plant is growing and recording the results.

Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) This half term Hedgehog class are learning about being healthy. We started off by learning about two people who helped change hospitals for the better - Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. After learning about their lives and the struggles they faced we wrote diaries and biographies. We are now learning about our own bodies, the different organs and bones we have and how to look after them. In music we have started learning to play the recorder and have learned a song about Florence Nightingale. In art we have been sketching and looking at self portraits. A busy start to the summer term!

Badgers (Years 3 and 4) We have had great fun in starting our Hollywood topic this half term. Hanging from our classroom is our own Hollywood Walk of Fame. We have also learnt the main song from 'Singin' in the Rain.' Our ICT topic also links to our Hollywood topic as we are designing stop art animations. We have created our own backgrounds and dolls to re-film Singin' in the Rain. The children have chosen a range of destinations from the tube to a rainbow cloud kingdom. The children had fun on our Kersey sound walk where we tried to find out where in Kersey had the most noise. In Literacy we have some budding thespians as we develop our knowledge of writing and performing a range of different play scripts.

Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class enjoyed a fantastic trip to see The Lion King in London. It started off our topic on Africa and we now cannot wait to put on our own version of the show. We have been learning about the different countries that make up Africa, whereabouts Africa is on the map and the range of climates across the continent. Owls class have also researched some endangered species in Africa, and written Haiku poems about different African animals.

Surviving Winter In Hadleigh (and surrounding villages) We completed our fourth full year giving assistance to our largest numbers of local residents to date. This included thermal wear for the day or night. Funding for heating to meet shortfalls in utility bill charges. Where an existing electric blanket needs replacing, any replacement to be purchased by the applicant with our funding. We have previously given assistance for extreme weather wear to the disabled who are required to travel distances for employment. We recently gave support for replacement batteries and servicing to keep one rider mobile rather than completely house bound. Our grateful thanks to Hadleigh Mobility in the Market Place. They gave service of the greatest standard plus a charge that we were able to meet and not break the bank. We also supported an emergency 24hr land line service on which a resident relies greatly. We distributed more personal help alarms in the event of requiring immediate assistance. We still have some available for the over sixty years of age.

Should you know of or belong to a club that has a need for Hi-Vis vests either for working with the aged or more energetic pursuits, we have a limited number to dispose of free of charge. We also have a number of new collecting boxes and wraps to go with the boxes, again, free of charge. These will be given priority to Registered Charity Groups only. We are looking to seek a volunteer with the view to replacing a retiring helper and possible future chair person. Whether you are part of a community group or an individual Hadleigh resident, you are most welcome to come and join the Hadleigh Steering Group. We meet once a month and discuss matters that affect our town. We are nonpolitical, but many organisations that are involved with Hadleigh attend. Come and find out what is going on and if you wish, share your opinions.

Our next meeting is: 4.15pm Monday, 4th June 2018 at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure and the main item will be Ben Day of the Porch Project informing us about the many new developments that are happening at the Porch Project.

Mike Keeling, the Footpath Warden for Hadleigh, will also give a brief talk about Hadleigh footpaths. Anita Young will Chair this meeting.

Here is a summary of some of the matters discussed at our last meeting, which was chaired by Kathryn Grandon: Main Agenda Item: Suffolk +20 Delivered by: Anna Crispe, Head of Knowledge and Intelligence at Suffolk County Council gave a presentation on what life in Suffolk is anticipated to look like in 2037. This summary is based on models and information currently available so won’t anticipate every eventuality, however it covered a far-reaching number of topics from ageing population, education, crime, mental health and housing.

Some of the points of note were: • The number of people living in the county over 65 will move from 1 in 5 to 1 in 3 • The number of people living with dementia will double, with most new diagnosis in the 80+ age group • Life expectancy in the County is higher than the national average for both men and women, although there are variances in deprived areas.

• Housing delivery will not meet housing need; currently there are in excess of 11K people on the housing register in Suffolk.

• Crime has always been low in Suffolk, the level of crime is not anticipated to change but the type of crime is, with higher levels of cyber and exploitationrelated crime.

• Circulatory disease is still the biggest cause of death.

• Smoking is the biggest cause of life threatening issues in deprived areas.

• 50% of tobacco is consumed by people with mental health issues.

• Suffolk has high employment but low wages.

• Without a higher wage economy, the productivity gap – currently £3b, will be £4b as population age increases.

• Welfare reform will remove £261m from the current benefit spend.

The findings of this report are supporting new training and information provided to front line services and professionals as well as informing local approach to lobbying central government.

At the same time this also provides a framework for advice and guidance to us all. Relatively simple steps such as knowing your blood pressure and taking steps to address any issues together with following recommendations for personal health and wellbeing will be hugely impactful in improving life outcomes for us.

Tidy Town: The group are very successful and have attracted a strong core of volunteers, however more are always welcome and people are encouraged to take part. There is a strong social element to the group together with a real health benefit and positive experience from being part of the group. New members welcome – contact Anita Young. This week the group picked the Wolves wood picnic area, collecting 5 sacks of waste together with larger objects such as chair. All of these are collected and disposed of by the Babergh public realm team. Given the high level of foot traffic and evening events anticipated in the town from the Hadleigh Show during the coming weekend, there will be no litter pick during this week, but the group will be celebrating the Great British Cean by being out for 4 days next week.

Music Festival – The preview event held in St Mary’s Church was very successful with a great variety of music. The Ukulele group’s programme was fun, the Serendipity Choir performed a programme of contemporary music and the orchestra performed traditional English folk music.

The organisers of the festival realised from this event that the number of volunteers they have to support the festival will be challenging so have taken the decision to move two of the events to the autumn.

Currently, for the weekend of the festival, (6th – 8th July) the main event on Friday will be a folk event with Sally Ironmonger, Saturday will be the Community Choir event at the URC and on Sunday there is a Swing and Jazz night with the 3 Cordettes at the Old school Bridge Street.

Any profits made from any of the events will go towards the St Mary’s School large instrument fund.

Visit Hadleigh Team: The website is going well, new images and content are being uploaded all of the time and every month there is a new business profile added. However there is always a need for more information and support.

There is potential for Hadleigh to have a dedicated YouTube channel, however this will require an additional approx £90 pmth to support and currently the website only has funding to the end of September. If anyone is interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Stuart Service.

Hanging baskets: This summer’s hanging baskets are currently being planted, will have a reservoir to help avoid drying out and will contain hardier, drought resistant flowers. They will be offered for sale to High St businesses

within the next couple of weeks and will be at a slightly higher rate than previously, to include some paid support for watering the baskets. Last year it was evident that businesses are not all able to look after their baskets so this was supported entirely by volunteers. This model is difficult to sustain so for 2018 a combination of both paid and volunteer support will be included. An advert will be placed in HCN to see if anyone would be interested in this as a part-time summer role. The Town Council have offered to help support this. It was suggested that Hadleigh may want to consider a Hadleigh in bloom event during 2019.

The community gardeners in the town will be weeding and tidying the Cedric Morris gardens on the 21st May. The market place gardens have been done although the bench has not been replaced as promised. KG will address with the Public Realm team at Babergh.

During Hadleigh Open Gardens weekend the visitor services team will again be providing a pop-up visitor information stand in Magdalen road. This was well received last year and is a great opportunity to promote the town.

Town Council: the seat in front of the War Memorial, damaged in an earlier incident will be replaced soon.

Hadleigh Legacy Group: The legacy group were offered the opportunity to bid for an art project within the town that would celebrate the Year of the Sheep festival. To do this there needed to be evidence of support for the project from within the town, so a letter was placed in the HCN asking if people were able to provide this. There was a great response to the letter and Jan Devey shared the feedback with the group. The feedback has been sent to the company who are running the scheme however nothing has yet been received back to indicate whether the bid has been successful. Once a decision has been made the group will share the outcome. If the bid is successful, the location and design for the artwork will then have to be agreed.

AOB: Sarah Thompson has advised that as the Christmas present trust have some funds available, in addition to this year’s Christmas lunch event, they will be holding an additional afternoon community Choir event on the 7th July.

Invitations will be sent to all previous attendees to the Christmas Lunch together with care homes and other organisations who may benefit from the opportunity. Should anyone wish to attend or know anyone that would please can they complete the form and return it to Sarah.

Hello from the horse who has shrunk from 15hh to under 10hh. It’s a lot to lose under any circumstances; lucky I’m a simulator and not a live pony!

Here’s one of my adult riders, Evie, who has been coming here since she was three years old, so she has witnessed plenty of change, in the live pony herd, and in ME. It’s much easier for Evie to use our hoist now that I’m lower, and her side walkers don’t have to balance on mounting blocks either. Its a very clever solution to the lifting problem some of my riders had, and it could make me look less scary to new riders. So I won’t complain any more; I’ll just get on with doing what we all love doing here at the Centre: giving disabled people the chance to ride.

We had a welcome visit from nine Essex University students last month. They came to do voluntary service here so we really had them working hard.

Weeding, mowing, grooming and, worst of all, uprooting ragwort. The weather was perfect and the Bret valley looked beautiful, so they all fell in love with Shelley. They asked a million questions about us, and as the 11 students came from about 7 different countries, we were very happy to spread the word about RDA to an international audience. The students are pictured looking well exercised after their morning out of doors!

Luckily for us, the Trefoil Group has chosen to make the RDA its charity of the year, so we have hosted a local group up here, and shown them the ropes.

Thoughts are turning to our end of year Shelley Show on June 24th. I shall have photos of the day’s activities next month. I get a bit jealous watching the live ponies being primped and permed in readiness for the Show. However you couldn’t wash my tail, I’d short my electrics, and I’ve had quite enough shortening for now, thank you.

Hadleigh Walkers June’s walk will again be a circular walk Hadleigh, Cosford Hall, Whatfield, Ash Street, Kersey and back to Hadleigh. The walk distance is about 6.5 miles to Kersey with a further 2 miles back to Hadleigh. We will stop at the Kersey Bell where those needing refreshment can linger for a while and others can make their way back to Hadleigh via the Monk’s Path.

Anyone wishing to stop for lunch should make reservations directly with the Bell (823229) for around 12 to 12.30. As usual, we will meet as St Mary’s School car park at 0930 on Saturday the 9th June. The exact route may change slightly depending on our recce which will take place after the filing date for this announcement so please look at the website for more detail a couple of days before the 9th. Stronger bones, better health Did you know that your bones are constantly renewing and remodeling? We build up our bone strength until we reach the end of our 20s, but our bones are constantly renewing and replacing their cells throughout our lives. Exercise that loads the bone and causes muscles to pull on the bones helps with this process. Evidence shows us that regular exercise is associated with lower incidences of cardio vascular disease, certain cancers, diabetes and osteoporosis. But did you know that different activities can have a marked effect on your bone health?

Recent research shows that elite gymnasts have bone density that is between 11.5%-20% higher than average, and that elite cyclists are up to 5% lower.

For muscle to have it’s beneficial effect on bone density their either has to be an element of weight bearing, as in walking, jogging or dancing, or their has to be some sort of resistance such as rowing, gym machines and weights.

Some types of exercise have added advantages. For example, dancing and Zumba help to improve balance and muscle strength, which can help reduce the risk of falls, especially in older people. Sports such as tennis are great for improving bone density and muscle power. (Research has shown that professional tennis players have higher bone density in their serving arm.)

Swimming and cycling, whilst not helping with bone density so much, are great for cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and endurance. They may also be helpful for patients with painful knee or hip joints, who may find jogging or jumping painful.

There are some things that can help or hinder bone strength. For example, by the age of 80 smokers have 6% lower bone density than non smokers and are 71% more likely to suffer a hip fracture. Excessive alcohol intake is associated with increased fracture risk, as is some medication such as corticosteroids and some hormone treatments (eg for breast cancer) can also affect bone strength. However, a healthy diet, sunlight, and enough vitamin D are all helpful in maintaining bone strength, as well as some weight bearing exercise. When the Clock Strikes Twelve: Barbara Faulkner returned to the group almost a year after her first entertaining visit. There was a question mark over her talk as no one had any idea what would occur when the clock struck twelve (midnight). Barbara first turned to her audience for inspiration. There were several appropriate suggestions i.e. witches, Cinderella, pumpkins and insomnia. The link to midnight with all of the members’ ideas was expanded upon including helpful remedies to overcome insomnia. All of this led seamlessly onto the real and totally unexpected answer. Unfortunately the entire group was sworn to secrecy so that future talks on the subject would not be jeopardised. Suffice to say the ladies learned a great deal about a most unlikely but everyday item. A most unusual, interesting talk which held everyone’s attention throughout.

A Street Car Named Desire: This powerful play by Tennessee Williams which was first performed on Broadway in 1947, has since been a film, an opera, a ballet, a gender-bent production and a TV film.

The New Wolsey in conjunction with A Nuffield Southampton Theatres, English Touring Theatre and Theatre Clwyd co-produced this powerful and often disturbing performance. Much enjoyed in a weird kind of way by our theatre goers.

Pakenham Mill: As we had a record turnout for our recent visit to this working flour mill we had two volunteer guides, Bob Emery and David Matthews, to show us around plus the miller, Peter Stobbart. We gathered in the Mill’s beautiful back garden which was full of seasonal wild flowers and nesting water birds. First stop the original kitchens which pre-dates the Mill itself. The In one of the kitchens at Pakenham Mill rooms were ready for their annual Wildlife Day when visitors are treated to a spectacular array of traditional country crafts and demonstrations. Members viewed all parts of the Mill at work and with the help of Bob, David and Peter followed the process from grain to flour. The cogs, wheels, buckets and other enormous pieces of equipment were impressive especially given their age. The fairly dusty tour ended with a most welcome afternoon tea provided by Brigitte Fauve and Julie Evans in the cosy tearoom. Their delicious home-made scones were proof enough that the freshly milled flour was worth buying from their shop. JD

Pause For Thought “Pizza and chips!” The children answered enthusiastically but the wrong answer showed they had not been listening. They were learning stories from The Bible. The boy who gave his lunch of two fish and five rolls to Jesus only to see it miraculously feed 5000 people had never heard of pizza and chips!

It reminded me of a story a Vicar told me. Every Sunday, he taught and explained truth from the Bible. He spent a long time making sure people could understand it. He gave a man from church a lift home. The man commented his friend had asked how to be sure of going to Heaven when you died. “I told her what you tell me each week, Vicar. You just need to do your best and help everyone you can and you will be alright.”

The Vicar was sad because every week he had explained the message of the Bible. Contrary to what his passenger thought he heard, he got it all wrong.

The Bible is clear. Every person does wrong stuff, and God will not overlook it. Yet He passionately loves people and longs to forgive them. It is simply by admitting our wrong doing and asking Jesus to forgive us that we get to Heaven. Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sin.

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 46 (June â&#x20AC;&#x201C; July 2018) It is fifty years ago this year the St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Primary School was opened, before the time when it became necessary to protect school buildings from unwanted intruders. The openness of the site in Stomehouse Road is clearly shown in photographs that document the progress of building work in 1968. A series of eighth interlinked pavilions formed the school but originally, there were no external boundaries to show where the school grounds ended and Cockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meadow began.

Thanks to the far-sightedness of Ann Miller of Shipdham, Norfolk, four scrap books kept by Audrey Bennett of Hadleigh (1922-2008) will eventually be deposited in Hadleigh Archive. In the meanwhile, The Hadleigh Historian will be dipping into their pages to recall people, places and events in Hadleigh, which appeared in local-newspaper articles and sufficiently interested Audrey for her to collect them. Issue 46 looks at the 1950s when, for example, Lloydâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bank was raided, a new fire station was built and the watermill in Bridge Street was demolished. Also in the 1950s, the Coffee Tavern was restored. Appearing on the front cover of Issue 43 was a drawing of the rear of the building made in 1908 and nothing much seemed to take place concerning refurbishment until 1955, when the three owners obtained a grant towards repairing the whole building. Pictures taken before the work commenced show just how dilapidated the building had become. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The people of Hadleigh pay their taxes in 1524â&#x20AC;&#x2122; shows what happened when taxation for King Henry VIIIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wars in France was considered too demanding at a time of recession in the woollen-cloth trade, on which the economy depended. Not only were the wealthy clothiers stung but also their workers.

Later Tudor historians, collaborating to write Holinshedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chronicles in 1577, recorded the ensuing rebellion. William Shakespeare researched this volume when writing his history play King Henry VIII and used the events in Suffolk as an opportunity for Queen Katherine and the Duke of Norfolk to bully Cardinal Wolsey and criticize his efforts to raise money for the king, which caused considerable unemployment.

Nigel crisp contributes another story from the Great War (1914-1918), this time of a Hadleigh man who died as a consequence of his army service but whose name does not appear on the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s war memorials. Also revealed are the mysterious disappearance of former mayor Thomas Gates in 1662 and the story behind some pargetting in the High Street.

Stour Valley U3A Curry Group hits Hadleigh May Day was well celebrated by Stour Valley U3A Curry Group sporting red flowers and red items of clothing. The staff of the India Villa restaurant in Hadleigh made the group very welcome and provided an excellent buffet for the twenty visitors. Making Tax Digital for VAT is coming – are you prepared? You need to take action now and we can help!

What is Making Tax Digital for VAT (MTDV)? This is part of HMRC's vision to digitalise the UK tax system. Businesses and landlords with an annual ‘VATable’ turnover over the VAT limit, currently £85,000 per annum, will be required to use commercial software to maintain their records and to update HMRC quarterly. Substantial Penalties will apply where businesses fail to comply.

From when will the changes apply? Although the plans are still in draft we expect that a business will have to keep digital records and submit its VAT returns digitally with effect from the first VAT return period beginning on or after 1 April 2019. As an example, if a business files VAT Returns on a quarterly basis ending March, June, September and December the MTDV changes will apply to that business with effect from 1 April 2019.

What do the changes mean for VAT Registered Businesses? From the implementation date you will have to keep your accounting records in ‘electronic’ form. You will no longer be able to file your VAT Returns by entering the figures onto HMRC’s website; instead you will have to use your ‘compliant’ software. This is similar as to the way that payroll programs transmit payroll information to HMRC. Will businesses be able to use spreadsheets? The use of spreadsheets will be permitted although they will need to be combined with third-party commercial software, to ensure a seamless flow of data from the business to HMRC (and vice versa). At present there are no software packages which are capable of transferring the information from a spreadsheet to HMRC. We would strongly recommend that you use compatible software rather than spreadsheets.

What should I do now to prepare? If your accounting records are paper or spreadsheet based we would recommend you to investigate which software paackage is suitable for you as soon as possible. If you use an accounting package you should confirm that the package will be compatible with HMRC’s systems. Even if you recently purchased your software it may not be compatible.

Marathon success for Stuart Despite it being the hottest London Marathon on record, I very am pleased to say that I completed it in 4:24:17.

Hadleigh Cycling Club Our Cycling Club is anxious to offer the broadest range of opportunities for Hadleigh residents to enjoy cycling. We want to attract the “super fit” and the “less than super fit”. We have young members who are on balance bikes and a few who have been riding for decades. There are social rides for those who like to natter and we support time trailers who just want to put their heads down and ride.

For women, we’re running the Get Back on Your Bike course. This 6 weeks course begins at 7.15 - 8.15pm on Wednesday, 6th June, cost £12.50, which includes club membership. The sessions, at Hadleigh Community Primary, include basic cycling skills, how to get the most out of cycling on your own or with others. Riders will need to wear helmets. St Elizabeth Hospice Fund Raiser On Sunday 6th May 2018, another fund raising night was held at The Brewers Arms, Polstead to raise money for St Elizabeth Hospice in memory of my lovely dad, the late David Edward Leeks. Once again, Shaun and Mitch from The Brewers kindly hosted the evening and provided supper for all that took part. Chris and Michelle Warren put together a very entertaining quiz that got everyone thinking. The quiz, as well as a great raffle, raised the grand sum of £450.00 which has been passed to the hospice.

Thanks to the Warrens for their hard work in organising the evening, thanks to the Brewers for their great hospitality and not forgetting everyone who donated raffle prizes.

French’s Care Haven and Care Farm I was hoping that in this month’s edition of French’s news we would be telling you of where our new premises is and asking for all hands on deck for our move but, as it stands at the time of me writing this it is far from that case.

Our nightmare of trying to find somewhere for our Charity and Care Farm rages on and thank you to all of the lovely people who have offered their sadness at our situation and tried to suggest who may help us. I have followed up on all the leads and advice with no luck sadly.

Community Action Suffolk’s Talent Match pictured have been helping us take down our internal fencing ready for our move, we cannot dismantle too much of our fencing or main items until such time that the animals have moved over.

Then of course it will take an army and some weeks to complete the relocation as it is such a massive job ahead, so be ready for the call out on Hadleigh notice board, I can only pray the time will come soon when we find somewhere to go and you good people can come along and help us move out and pay us a visit. I am hoping that it will be on a positive note and not because we are being forcibly evicted if we are not gone in June, with no leeway, compassion or understanding being offered, only “where’s the money”! Our finical situation has been effected by the notice to quit as we have not had the helpers in or any fund raising events that usually keep everything sweet bill wise, so because of this we have been trying to sell as they say the shirts off of our backs, to raise funds to cover the water and electric along with our basic feeds, vets, farrier, hay and straw, daily maintenance and business rates, which as you can imagine amount to huge monthly bills. I have also been looking at the costs of preparing new premises for the animals, including moveable outbuildings and the obvious changes we will have to endure. We had a Hadleigh townee Mr Haines donate £100 to our cause, Thank you. For 11 years we have had excellent references all round and I plan to continue this in our new premises, when we find it! The search continues so please pass on any leads or suggestions, I am all ears and ready to sprint to their doors, after having had two knockbacks from ideal farms that are both standing idle and dilapidated and could have done with French’s love and care to bring them back to life, but not to be. I have had to pick myself back up and march on, to be honest, I feel battered and broken from this god awful experience so far and look forward to better days! The media have been so supportive, along with news papers and radio stations doing regular stories on our appeal to try and help French’s end the nightmare of having to find a new home.

Another call out today is for anyone who can help for awhile with storage, we have a lot of equipment that needs to go into storage while we sort things out, some we will keep and other things can hopefully be sold. Can you help? Do you have anything in the way of lock up space we can use?

The Sun as seen from the Planets Sun 5th Rise 04.44 Set 21.23, 15th Rise 04.40 Set 21.31, 30th Rise 04.44 Set 21.33 Moon New 13th, Full 28th.

Planets Venus is at magnitude -4.0 in the evening sky. On the 16th, the Moon will be close to the brilliantly white shinning planet. Mars shines at magnitude -1.3 in the morning sky in the constellation of Capricornus. Jupiter is visible all night. The Moon passes close on the 23rd. Saturn is now visible for most of the night and reaches opposition on the 27th, when it will be magnitude 0.0.

The Sun As seen From Other Planets As you will be aware, the Summer Solstice occurs on the 21st of this month.

This is when the Sun reaches its highest position in our sky. Summer is now in full swing and the nights are long for us (but very short for astronomers!).

Many people ask me , "how big does the Sun look from the other planets"?

The best way to explain this is via the above illustration.

From Mercury, we can see that it is vast and indeed takes up a large majority of the sky.

This also obviously increases the light and heat received, making Mercury a hellish world. From Venus it is a tad larger than from Earth. If one could stand on the planet and see the Sun (the planet is enshrouded by cloud) the amount of light and heat would be higher but not detrimental to humans .

Moving on to Mars and we can see a definite decrease in size. This indicates that the the light and heat received is only a fraction of that on Earth; in fact, the highest temperatures on Mars are in the region of 22 degrees C. Not bad, but the nights are -80 degrees C or more. Now moving on to the remainder of the planets from Jupiter, Saturn,Uranus through to Neptune, we see the Sun as little more than a bright star. We know that these planets are very dynamic weather-wise , and at their vast distances they receive little in the way of Heat or light to energise them. This indicates that the outer planets produce their own heat source from within, which Solar System climatologists are still divided in opinion as to the exact workings of this.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday 7th May 2018: The sun shone once again on Hadleigh Garden Club as we set out on our second trip of the year. We travelled to Ulting Wick near Maldon to visit the garden of Phillippa Burrough. The eleven acre garden, which has been developed over the last twenty years, surrounds a farmhouse and timber barns, some dating back to the sixteenth century. We timed our visit to take advantage of the huge display of tulips and, despite the extremes of weather over the last few weeks, we were not disappointed. Ten thousand bulbs are planted each year in a variety of settings. There are displays in formal areas with a limited palette of companion planting to show them to best advantage (see photo), single coloured bulbs in tubs, others in mixed borders by the stream and still more in beds by the house. Every colour combination, flower type and size were there to be admired. There are pots with new varieties that are being trialled - some with vibrant flowers as big as dinner plates and some smaller and more delicate in shades of pink which turn to a glowing bronze as they fade. Indeed there were plenty of ideas for everyone's garden, no matter how big or small.

Our next get together on Monday 11th June 2018: We are back at Hadleigh Town Hall this month and we welcome David Ward from the Beth Chatto gardens. The theme will be 'Making a drought resistant garden', I'm sure we could all do with advice about this, particularly living in this area of the country.

The meeting starts at 7.30pm and is ÂŁ3 for non members and ÂŁ1 for members, to include refreshments. The competition for this month is ' one rose bloom'.

A new book celebrates the life and work of Harry Hambling (1902-1998), who lived in Hadleigh between the 1920s and late 1990s Harry was intimately involved in the politics and social life of Hadleigh for eighty years and was chief cashier in the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s branch of Barclays Bank until 1962. It was only after his retirement from the bank that Harry took up painting, and he went on to have a successful thirty-year artistic career with his work exhibited in Suffolk, Essex and London.

Written by Harryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artist daughter Maggi Hambling and the historian Jamie Gilham, A Suffolk Eye: Harry Hambling, Paintings (Lux Books, 2018) documents Harryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life and describes his journey from the bank to painting and exhibiting visionary Suffolk landscapes, still lifes and portraits.

The book is lavishly illustrated with fifty photographs and paintings featuring Hadleigh and other local scenes, including Chelsworth, Kersey, Layham, Nayland, Polstead, Semer and Shelley.

Down to Earth ...with Dave At last we are getting the sort of weather that is more normal for this time of year. On the allotment the daffodils are finished but they will soon be followed by plenty of gladioli that are growing very quickly in the next bed. Try to resist tying up the old daffodil leaves in a knot. I know they look neater if they are knotted up but this does no good for the future productivity of the bulb, and they only have to be left untidy for a couple of weeks It is full steam ahead with the planting of the various brassicas, protected as usual by the upturned florists' flowerpots with their bottoms cut out. This is one of my favourite tricks and it seems to work year after year. Keep picking the asparagus as it has a very short season, though it may go on a little longer this year due to the much later start.

Towards the end of May is a good time to carry out what is known as the 'Chelsea chop', this involves cutting back some herbaceous plants by about a third, even if they are flowering. This drastic pruning coincides with the Chelsea flower show, hence its name. Pruning so late delays flowering and gives a more compact plant with less need for staking. Plants suitable for the Chelsea chop include most sedums, campanulas, phlox, achillea, nepeta and many of the true geraniums, all of the plants will flower again but not grow so tall. There has been much talk recently in the media about the use or not of plastics in the garden. Over the years I have managed to build up quite a stock of various sized plastic pots. These are washed, sorted by size and stacked under the bench for use as needed. I probably have enough to last me till I hang up my gardening boots. Many plants come in flimsy multipacks, if these are used two together they can be re-used. Of course, the various patterns and sizes have to match and there will always be some that are odd. Large lemonade bottles have their tops or bottoms cut off and are used as individual mini cloches. The large florists flowerpots with the bottom cut off have been used for years on the allotment.

Plastic compost bags have numerous uses such as being cut up for lining hanging baskets and other plant containers, storing spent compost, transporting rubbish to the tip or to the allotment. If you do need to buy pots then various fibre ones are available. The advantage with these is that the small plants are planted out without any root disturbance. The ideal situation would be to have dozens of terracotta pots stacked in the potting shed as Monty Don has, but this is not going to happen. I recently asked the price of some at an antique sale and was told that they varied in price, starting at £10 for four little ones. Finally the little hedgehog is back and being given a regular supper of tinned cat food. This has to be protected from cats with a specially built hedgehog feeding station.

This month was our AGM and as we also had a speaker, It was a very busy meeting. All the members of our Committee agreed to stand for another year and were subsequently voted in, with Sophie Rickards as President, Carole Cranston as Secretary and Ann Porter as Treasurer. We also welcomed Pat Rocks onto the Committee.

Our Speaker was Penny Simmonds, who came to enlighten us on the subject of Reflexology.

Penny originally trained as nurse. She was also a Midwife and a Health Visitor and then after having three children, she moved to the voluntary sector and she is still involved in this area. She also does Healing and runs courses in this subject. It involves being self-aware and being aware of the energy around us. In the eighties, after her third child, she was invited to a Reflexology Session during which she was told that she had a hormone imbalance and blocked sinuses. She went to the lady for treatment and she was invited to do training. This was quite extensive and she has to keep her skills upgraded.

Penny also belongs to the Association of Reflexologists.

Although there is evidence that the Egyptians knew something of Reflexology, it was introduced to us, towards the end of the 19th Century, by an ENT Surgeon called William Fitzgerald. He believed that our bodies can be broken down into zones and that work on one zone can bring about changes in other parts of the body. Areas on our hands and feet are linked to parts of the body, such as the head, neck shoulders, spine and abdominal organs. a reflexologist works on the hands and feet using different pressure techniques. She may not diagnose or suggest a cure but she can find imbalances . Reflexology is good at reducing inflammation, can ease back pain and in general, it reduces tension and brings about a sense of well-being. Claver Hill volunteered to have her feet worked upon and definitely felt relaxed. She and some other members are keen to have a further session of reflexology with Penny Simmonds.

Our next meeting will be, as usual, on the third Tuesday of the month in the Seminar Suite above the Library.

Hadleigh Comunity Primary School Key Stage 1 – Year 1 Year One have had an exciting half term learning all about famous people. We began the topic asking pupils who they knew who was famous. As well as quite a few footballers, the children gave us examples including J.K. Rowling, Florence Nightingale, Ed Sheeran and the Queen. We discussed what they would like to be when they are older and whether they would like to be famous.

Following on from the success of the Peter Rabbit film, we made Beatrix Potter our first famous person. The children all enjoyed hearing and watching her original stories and having a chance to write an animal tale of their own. Pupils relished the chance to let their imaginations run and we had quite a lot of naughty animals getting up to mischief!

Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole provided our next focus. We were interested to see how life was very different for women in the past and the strength of character both women displayed to achieve their goals. It was inspiring for all pupils to see that determination and hard work can equal success, even if you have to overcome obstacles along the way. We would like to thank Mrs Everett and Mrs Paxman for coming in to talk to us about their jobs as a midwife and a nurse. The children had so many questions to ask and used their new knowledge when comparing nursing now and in the past.

We finished the half term with the Queen and the Royal Family. Pupils had the chance to learn about the Queen and were amazed at how long she has been on the throne. We then made wedding themed block prints and each child made and wrote a wedding card for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

These have been posted to Clarence House for the happy couple and we will wait to see if we have a response. Fingers crossed.

Year 2 Year 2 have been working hard to complete their Secret Agent Training (SATs). They have successfully undertaken two reading and two maths challenges. To celebrate the children’s effort and progress we will be awarding each pupil a special Secret Agent Training Service certificate following completion of their final mission: Code Breaking Treasure Hunt.

Sport Our Year 4 girls football team recently took part in the Under 9's Football Festival at Inspire Suffolk. Thirteen schools took part in this festival with Hadleigh playing matches against Britannia, Claydon, Gorseland, Colneis and Sproughton. The girls were fantastic all afternoon, working well as a team in defence and attack. Hadleigh went on to win all five of their matches scoring a total of 17 goals! However, what was more impressive was that the team did not concede a single goal throughout the festival! A brilliant performance from the girls!

On Wednesday 9th May, our Year 4 tag rugby team took part in the Under 9's Tag Rugby Festival at Inspire Suffolk. Twenty one primary schools too part on what turned out to be a very warm afternoon and the team managed to win 3 matches 6-2, 5-2 and 4-0 and drew the other 2-2. A great display by our Year 4 team resulted in Hadleigh finishing the festival undefeated.

The 179th Hadleigh Show Saturday 19th May 2018

There may have been a rival event in Windsor on Saturday 19th May but with the weather fine and sunny all week the crowds still headed at Holbecks Park arriving bright and early on show day.

There they were met by stewards, trade stands, judges and livestock exhibits decked out in red, white and blue to embrace the “Quintessentially British” theme.

The highlight of the Show for many were Broke FMX who thrilled the crowds with their death defying motocross tricks. Many gasps could be heard as they spun in the air high above the crowds. The Flower marquee celebrated the end of World War I whilst Hadleigh Castings and The Hadleigh Centenary project offered a taster of how Hadleigh will be marking this event over the next few months. The Food Hall and cookery demonstration area was also a must for food lovers with all different types of cuisine on offer.

Titan the Robot met many visitors on his trip around the show with much laughter and interaction whilst the Ed-moocation area gave you visitors the chance to meet a cow and calf.

Numerous local trade stands were showcasing their businesses whilst the Rural Craft Marquees was, as usual, filled with a spectacle of colour and talented craftsmen. The Art Tent once again showcased art, pottery and sculptures from many local artists.

The Hadleigh Farmers’ Agricultural Association would like to thank everyone who has supported or visited the show this year and helped us celebrate the Royal Wedding day in style.

New Charity to take over Meals On Wheels Service Royal Voluntary Service is ending its Meals on Wheels service in Suffolk and a local charity, Aspect Living Foundation, taking over the meals delivery service. Following a review of its Meals on Wheels service, Royal Voluntary Service, has taken the difficult decision to end the service. This is because over the past 10 years the number of services the charity runs across the country has reduced dramatically. With so few left, it has become harder for it to sustain the handful of services remaining as much of the infrastructure we used to rely on to support Meals on Wheels has depleted.

Sam Ward, Director of Commissioned Services at Royal Voluntary Service said: "We have delivered Meals on Wheels in Suffolk for the past 10 years and very much regret having to end the service. "The well-being of the older people in Suffolk is our priority and we have been working with the Local Authority and other partners to find potential alternatives to allow them to receive a service in the future. We are delighted that Aspect Living Foundation, a local charity, will be taking over the service from the beginning of May 2018. We will be working with them to ensure a smooth transition and we wish them every success in delivering the new service. "Our volunteers and staff have worked tremendously hard at the service for many years and we know that their efforts have been hugely appreciated. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for everything they have done." HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 19th April 2018 Present: Councillors: Free (Town Mayor), Byrne, Cook, Fraser, Haines, Haylock, Matthews, Monks, Ruddy, ShearlySanders, Sheldrick, Wiltshire and Young. In attendance: Suffolk County Councillor Fraser and Babergh District Councillors Campbell, Dr. Dawson and Grandon and eight members of the public. The Clerk advised that the insurers had been contacted but to date no response had been received.

At this point the meeting was adjourned for members of the public to speak on the Council not supporting local businesses; an item that was referred to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity; changing the Town Council Agenda and the cemetery extension.

POLICE Councillor Matthews advised that he had arrived late this evening as he had met Police Officers leaving the cemetery. They had advised Councillor Matthews that there was a recognised drug problem in the town and that there will be an increased police presence to tackle the issue.

REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Written reports had been received from Suffolk County Councillor Fraser, Babergh District Councillors Campbell, Dr. Dawson and Grandon.

Councillor Grandon answered questions on the Hadleigh access point; production of the Local Plan – Councillor Grandon will advise the Clerk of the production date.

Councillor Dr. Dawson answered questions on the facilities for the disabled at the new pool; Angel Court and the Hadleigh access point.

Councillor Matthews asked the District Councillors if they knew what was being installed in the small car park on Magdalen Road. No-one had the answer but would report back.

Councillor Fraser was thanked for his report but was asked if he could provide any updates on specific Hadleigh matters. He updated Council on pot holes and the standard of repair, highway issues and Benton Street.

Councillor Fraser was requested to investigate broken paving, road signs and yellow markings and to ensure the quality of work carried out is inspected.

Councillor Fraser advised that he would take this matter up but requested that residents use the Highways fault reporting on-line system for reporting areas of concern.

Councillor Monks asked Councillor Fraser if a neighbourhood initiative could be organised as part of the Suffolk Day events. Neighbourhoods are encouraged to come together to either clean up areas in their neighbourhood or just take the opportunity to get together.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor reported that although the weather cut short her Charity Jumble Sale she still made £230 for her charities. She thanked everyone who had donated items and helped. The Mayor advised that she had received an e.mail which she read from Councillor Whiting submitting his resignation from Hadleigh Town Council. A request was made that a letter be sent to Councillor Whiting and his years of service given to the Council acknowledged.

STANDING ORDER NO. 40 Councillor Haylock asked if the Clerk could confirm that the fees for any training courses for Councillors which have been provided by the Council are paid for by the Council. The Clerk advised that these expenses are met by the Council and would include any expenses incurred.

Councillor Sheldrick asked if a letter could be sent to Babergh District Council expressing our dissatisfaction with the lack of a decision on the access point being made and requesting an appropriate manned access point for Hadleigh.

Councillor Sheldrick asked could the Council pursue through our Services Officer what is the letting strategy during the year as several allotments on the Bridge Street site which have been paid for have not been brought back into appropriate use as the rules state that the allotment should be kept substantially weed free.

Councillor Young asked if the payment on this month’s accounts to Wincer Kievenaar for £507 related to work carried out in respect of the Section 73 Application Notice, as there had been an invoice in January 2018 for £1,400 which related to work in respect of the Section 73 Application Notice and the Town Clerk advised in January that the only cost of the Section 73 Application Notice was a fee to Babergh District Council.

The Clerk advised that professional fees were charged at intervals. Councillor Young asked the Clerk to ask Wincer Kievenaar to provide more detail on invoices for their charges, as Councillors had been advised by the Town Clerk that they were working on a fixed fee.

Councillor Ruddy asked if the Council are agreeing to pay Wincer Kievenaar then each item should be noted so Councillors know what is being paid for so could this information be provided. The Clerk will request a breakdown of costs from Wincer Kievenaar.

Councillor Fraser asked if Hadleigh Town Council could take any action to have the bicycle removed from the Market Place. The Clerk would contact the Police.

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £16,612.48 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment.

PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 5th April 2018 were noted.

ENVIRONMENT & GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 12th April 2018 was received and subject to changing the year from 2018 to 2017 on the Christmas tree item accepted.

FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 12th April 2018 was received and accepted.

GENERAL POWER OF COMPETANCE GRANTS Grant requests had been received from East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices towards running costs; 5th Hadleigh St Mary’s Guides towards an International Trip to The Chalet, Switzerland in August 2018. A request for the annual grant made to the Community Choir and to review the grant for the Visit Hadleigh Website.

It was agreed to recommend grants of: i) £500 to EACH ii) £500 to 5th Hadleigh St. Mary’s Guides iii) £300 to Community Choir iv) £500 to Visit Hadleigh Website Thank you letters had been received from Suffolk Neighbourhood Watch Association; Sudbury Newstalk, Hadleigh Community Choir and Crucial Crew 2018 which also provided information on the Hadleigh Schools they would be attending at the end of April.

CHEQUE SIGNATORY It was agreed that Councillor Haines become a signatory for the Town Council Bank Account.

GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION The Clerk advised that the

Town Clerk did not need to be employed as the Data Protection Officer. The Local Council Public Advisory Service would provide this service for an annual fee of £500. The Suffolk Association of Local Councils would not be providing this service but were looking into outsourcing and obtaining costings. Private Companies are offering a service but they would have to be investigated. The Clerk was asked to contact other Councils of a similar size to find out how they were dealing with the GDPR. There was also an option for Councils to share a Data Protection Officer and the costs involved.

Councillor Byrne advised that at the SALC meeting she had attended some Councils reported that they had designated a Councillor to carry out this work but this was felt to be unsatisfactory for Hadleigh Town Council.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders advised that he would not be happy for Hadleigh Town Council to use the Local Council Public Advisory Service as he was having a personal dispute with the Service at the moment.

It was felt that no decision could be made until more information was available but it was noted that this was needed to be put in place by the 25th May 2018.

The Clerk advised that following the training session she had attended there was work that needed to be carried out prior to this date and did not require to be carried out by a designated Data Protection Officer.

It was agreed that an extra-ordinary Town Council Meeting be held after the Planning Committee on Thursday 3rd May just to deal with this matter and make an agreement before the 25th May 2018.

REPRESENTATIVES The Mayor reported on the Annual Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee meeting. Councillor Haylock advised that the Wool Town Association are having meetings with the Stour Valley and the Dedham Vale to get a wider range of tourism so that Hadleigh is not left outside the Dedham Vale.

SUFFOLK PARKING MANAGEMENT STRATEGY CONSULTATION Councillor Cook had requested this item and recommended that a letter be sent to Suffolk County Council expressing Hadleigh Town Council’s regret that the civil enforcement is not coming into effect as soon as was initially promised as all the items in the report need to be enforced and everyone knows that this is not happening as the Police do not have the time or manpower available.

Also Hadleigh Town Council would not want to see any additional on street parking charges brought in.

TOWN EVENTS This item had been requested at the last Town Council meeting in order that Councillor Ruddy could be involved in discussions. It was agreed that this should be an agenda item for the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity to discuss with a view to raising funds for the Charity.

TOWN MATTERS The Clerk reported an e.mail received from the newly formed Committee who are looking into holding a Town Carnival later in the year along with a number of fund raising events. Hadleigh Town Council would support the group in principle and looked forward to hearing more from them.

Councillor Ruddy advised that he had already spoken with the group and advised them that adequate insurance must be in place.

HADLEIGH NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Councillor Angland updated members following a recent meeting with Planning Direct which had been very positive. They were extremely impressed with the work that had already been carried out and appeared to be positive about taking over the project to completion. The Chair was waiting for the initial report for consideration. They had advised that on top of the initial £4,000 grant already received applications could be made for up to another £17,000 which if successful would fund the Plan. It was felt that a Heritage Assessment was essential for Hadleigh due to the number of listed buildings in the town. It was felt that the Local List being worked on at the moment would also be of interest.

BENTON STREET PUBLICATION Councillor Angland brought the recent publication – What Next? A review of the traffic management options produced for Benton Street, Hadleigh by Suffolk County Council Highway Authority 2017 – produced by Dick Fletcher for the Hadleigh Society – February 2018 to the attention of members.

ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS Councillor Haylock reported that Babergh District Council had taken the owners of the Royal Bengal Restaurant to court over the removal of the garage at the rear of the premises.

Unfortunately the defendants failed to appear for the hearing. Babergh District Council will now be requesting a further court hearing.

The Chair reported the Local Government Boundary Commission new draft recommendations and the consultation closure date of 30th April 2018. It was agreed that Councillors Angland, Haines and Sheldrick submit the recommendations for Hadleigh Town Council.

The Chair advised that Hadleigh Town Council had a tent at the May Show again to promote the work of the Council and the Neighbourhood Plan. The Chair asked if anyone knew of any display boards that might be available to borrow could they let her know.

The meeting closed at 8.20pm.

As conflicting advice had been received from these two organisations over recent months it was felt that another option should be found.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders was asked to provide the Town Council office with the information from East Bergholt Parish Council as he was aware that they were using the services of a Company.

It was suggested that another staff member could be employed to deal with the issue but until the actual work load has been assessed this option would be dealt with if the need arose.

After much discussion it was agreed that Councillor Cook would attend the Town Council office on Wednesday 9th May to assist the staff with the GDPR process and a meeting would be held on Thursday 17th May, prior to the Annual Town Council Meeting to approve recommendations put forward by Councillor Cook. This would still leave time to get everything put in place for the 25th May 2018.

Councillor Sheldrick advised that he had been attempting to obtain information from NALC but Suffolk Councils did not have direct access to NALC. Councillor Wiltshire advised that Suffolk Councils had to apply through SALC to meet certain criteria and request direct access to NALC. Annual Parish Meeting The April meeting is called by the Chairman of the Parish Council as a means of reviewing what has happened in the Parish over the last 12 months.

This year we invited a volunteer from the East Anglian Air Ambulance to talk to us – the EAAA is one of two charities to which the Parish Council contributes. Friends of St. Andrew’s Friends of St Andrew’s arranged a local walk to help raise funds for maintenance of the church. Forty five people responded to last month’s advertisement and gathered at Water House (by kind permission of the Cranfield family) where coffee and tea was served before departure. Some of the group walked the full distance of about 5 miles and others chose the shorter circuit. The photograph shows some of the walkers gathering at Water House. All paid £15 into the fund and were rewarded with a very tasty buffet lunch and a glass of wine on completion of the walk. Some generous folk unable to take part on the day, made donations, and the total sum raised was £1,150. Well done and thank you everyone.

St Andrew’s Plant Sale and Cream Teas The combination of bright sunshine and the added attraction of a Local History Group exhibition in the Village Hall brought record numbers to the plant sale and cream teas in the churchyard of St Andrew’s. Thank you all for your support.

Layham Playing Field Annual Meeting Wednesday 16 May 2018 The Chairman paid tribute to the work of five members of the committee who have had to resign after many years of service – Jane and Nick Elliott, John and Sam Millman and Andy Thorp. He also thanked all members of the committee for the many ways in which they have given their time to keep the field in good order and develop its facilities. We have a great team. We are very lucky there are so many local people prepared to support the field.

The Committee is financially secure, having built up reserves against the possibility of needing to repair or replace the ride-on mower. The annual grant of £1000 from the Parish Council is crucial in that security and the success of and support shown for the 100 Club is gratifying.

The biggest job tackled last year was to coppice part of the hedge line between the field and mill land. We look forward to the hedge line regrowing and thickening. The photograph shows new growth from the coppice stools just three months after the felling.

The whole committee offered to serve for another year – Lester Bennett, Simon Bewsher, Colin Brown, Graham Coleman, Lizzie Cousins, Glenda Hall, Dusty Miller, James Mosley, Rosie Owers, Neil Riches and Michael Woods.

Sylvia Miller was proposed to join the committee and warmly welcomed.

Layham Local History Revealed It was good to see so many people (94 in all) calling in to the exhibition of Layham’s History on Sunday 20 May in the village hall. Special thanks to Noel Herring, Sally Looker, Jan McNelly, Jeff Ward and Michael Woods who put together the information on Layham school, the 1851 Census, Layham Rectory, the men who came home from WW1 and Layham’s mills.

Thank you also to our guest, Kevin Chisnall (on the left in the photograph), who exhibited some of his metal detecting finds for our interest. Everything on show had been found in the village.

Layham Playgroup CIO This half term we have been thinking about the farm.

We have seen the busy tractor in the fields around playgroup, as well as the cow have returning to the neighbouring field. We had lots of fun bringing our stories into our small world farm and singing lots of animal related songs We held a mud week to raise funds for Save the Children. We had lots of fun making mud, we had muddy puddles to jump in, we played with our diggers and even held mud races!

Blackshuck M.C.C. Thanks The George Blackshuck M.C.C. made a special presentation to Paul and Tori Harman who run The George in Hadleigh, to thank them for all the years of support they have given to the Blasckshuck M.C.C. and their help with the many charity events the club has organised. Many bikers look forward every year to the Christmas and Easter charity runs with the club which always stop at The George on their way to Ipswich. In August they also provide a warm welcome to Blackshuck’s guests at the annual rally. Good luck for the future Paul & Tori. You will be missed.

Dear Sir, When this edition of Community News goes to press we will not know the result of the meeting which ex deputy Mayor Wilson and five other people have organised to demand a referendum calling for the resignation of the Town Council. The first the Town Council knew about this meeting was when a member of the public asked about a notice stuck to the notice board. It would have been courteous if Mr. Wilson could have mentioned this beforehand and asked if there was a hall available especially as the Council is paying the bill.

No mention has been made on social media that there is a cost for a Referendum and elections which have to be paid by all households in Hadleigh through the Council Tax. If Mr. Wilson has been successful he and his supporters will have cost the Town Council something like £10,000 which could be better spent in the town. It is irresponsible for six people to force the Council to incur this expense when all Councillors will have to resign anyway in April next year for the Parish and District Council elections.

It is not only Councillors who have been subjected to stress but also our three loyal office Staff who have to cope with extra work caused by the Clerk’s illness. They have been subjected to disrespect, rudeness and demands caused by attempts to disrupt the working of the Council. As a councillor I expect criticism but it is not acceptable for members of the public to treat staff in this way. I would like to thank them all, especially Elaine who has the responsibility of ensuring that the Council is correct in all the procedures, and routine work is proceeding as normal.

Dear Sir, We all know that we have such a precious town to live in and look after. This was brought home again to me at the May Show this year. The Town Council had a stand displaying some of the work the Council has been supporting and actively involved in, including Layham Road, the Cemetery, the Swimming Pool the Guildhall, the demand for housing, the growth of Hadleigh etc. There is a lot going on and still more to do. The many visitors to the stand were engaged and offered constructive opinions which we have made notes of.

Most took part in our poll where we asked members of the public to select a ball and put it in the basket representing what they felt should be the Council’s priority for the Town. The choices were limited to the Swimming Pool, Layham Road or the Cemetery. The results are as follows 79% Swimming Pool, 13% the cemetery, 8% Layham Road. One young lad aged about 7 was watching this and came over and asked what a cemetery was. I explained as gently as I could and he asked me could he have a go with a ball. I said of course he could. He chose cemetery. With that type of selflessness in our young, I am sure Hadleigh will continue to be our precious town.

Dear Sir, I write to commend the many residents that attended the Hadleigh Town Council AGM. I was impressed with the manner in which they conducted themselves, putting forward their views and feedback in a calm and reasoned way. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for some members of the Council. A former Councillor was verbally aggressive towards some who raised questions, whilst another Councillor stood up to angrily rebuke all present over comments concerning the Feoffment. I was disappointed that agenda items were not presented in an acceptable manner. The Neighbourhood Plan was dealt with by the Town Clerk reading out a report, that had been written by a member of a committee that is no longer in being, and that said very little. When it came to items concerning the Cemetery Extension and the Layham Road Pavillion, we were directed to two notice

boards. There was no one present to actually present information, as stated on the agenda. It became evident to me that the Town Council are not open to feedback, are not open and transparent, are adverse to the idea of business plans, are not engaging with the residents of Hadleigh and feel that they are not accountable. It was no surprise that, due to a lack of confidence, a poll was demanded and agreed.

Dear Sir, I am writing to correct errors in Cllr Dawson’s report in the May edition of the Community News. Whilst I accept that, as member of the opposition, Cllr Dawson can be expected to argue against administration policies (although not at the same time claiming to be loyal to the principles and policies of a Conservative administration), she should not be allowed to state things that are not true without being challenged.

In the interests of being brief, I will summarise these: The costs of the move to Endeavour House have been published and the benefits articulated on many occasions. Indeed, we are seeing ever more evidence of these as the weeks go by. Cllr Dawson claims not to have seen the business plan for the proposed merger with Mid Suffolk. Again, this has been published. She has consistently expressed opposition at any merger and so is keen to disparage any plans for this. We have, quite rightly, suspended our plans until the outcome of the county-wide unitary discussions are known. To proceed with our separate plans heedless of this would have been irresponsible.

Cllr Dawson says she will call in the cabinet decision not to provide a Customer Access Point similar to the one in Sudbury. The call in deadline passed without this happening. I can confirm that we are committed to providing a cut-down access point at a location in Hadleigh and, if successful, this model will be rolled out to other locations in the district.

Cllr Dawson claims that the proposed new swimming pool will not have disabled changing facilities. This would, of course, be against the law and I can confirm that the facilities will be fully compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act with an additional facility at the poolside. She therefore has no need to request that this be addressed (and then presumably take the credit for resolving something that was never an issue).

Finally, to address one of your correspondent’s concerns in the same edition, I can confirm that the depth of the proposed pool will not now be constant: following discussions it has been changed so that there will be a shallow end of 0.8m and a deep end of 1.9m.

Dear Sir, The NHS has come in for some criticism recently due to budget cuts and increased demand. I would like to put in a word for our wonderful surgery at the Hadleigh Health Centre. In October 2017 I had difficulty swallowing and saw a young Doctor who had only recently arrived in Hadleigh. He referred me to Ipswich Hospital for a throat examination where they discovered cancer of the oesophagus. I was referred to Broomfield Hospital and on the 29th January 2018 I had my gullet and the top 1/3rd of my stomach removed.

It is now nearly 4 months since the operation and I have made a fast recovery with no trace of cancer spread. It was life changing surgery but my prognosis was poor without the operation. I would also like to thank the wonderful District Nurses who visited me daily to dress my wounds. How about that for service?

I am 71 but was treated like royalty by all the NHS staff that I came into contact with. I am currently mowing the lawn, driving my car, planting vegetables and walking our three dogs. I look forward to a longer retirement than I otherwise might have had John Bowtell

Awaiting the Final Attack In this article we remember: Harold Victor Skinner 26 April 1918 Frederick Herbert Skinner 25 June 1918 The Skinner family lived at 87 Angel Street at the beginning of the 20th century. There were five boys all born in Hadleigh, three of whom were to lose their lives in the Great War. Lance Corporal Charles Henry Skinner was lost in action in the Ypres Salient in 1915. Harold and Frederick junior both fell within two months of each other in 1918. Because the family moved to Ipswich in about 1907 they are remembered on the war memorial in Christchurch Park.

Private Harold Victor Skinner was born in 1899 and worked as clerk for Messrs Footman Pretty and Co in Ipswich before the war. He was conscripted in 1917 and went to France serving with the 7 Battalion the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. In March 1918 the Battalion were close to the front line at St Quentin and during the German offensive of March 1918 were pushed back the full extent of the forty mile retreat over the bleak and barren wilderness that was the Somme battlefield of 1916. By 30 March 1918 they were close to Amiens. As they held the line during April, Harold Victor Skinner was killed, his body was never recovered and his name is inscribed on the Pozieres Memorial on the Somme battlefield in France.

Corporal Frederick Herbert Skinner was the eldest brother and worked as ‘sack cutter’. He married in Ipswich in 1910 and lived in Handford Road. He volunteered for service with the Suffolk Regiment in April 1915, later transferring to 11 East Yorkshires. During June 1918 the battalion were close to Hazebrouck in northern France attempting to push back the German front line. In this action Frederick Skinner was lost. His body was never found and he is remembered on the Ploegsteert (Plug Street) Memorial in Belgium.

The Royal Air Force was formed on 1 April 1918.

The capability and innovation of aircraft design developed rapidly through the years of the Great War and the Army with the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Navy with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), each develop use of the machines for their own needs of combat, bombing and reconnaissance. By 1918 it was clear that the air potential demanded expertise and leadership different from that of the army and navy, hence the RAF came into being with its own chain of command. A number of Hadleigh men served with the RFC and RAF in those early days.

Observer Officer Oswald Robert Gayford was born in Bridge Street, in 1893, his father Ernest was a corn, seed and coal merchant, his house, warehouses and maltings now part of the former Babergh Council offices. Gayford enlisted as a seaman with the Royal Naval Voluntary Reserve in 1914. In 1916 he transferred to the RNAS as an observer and saw action in the Mediterranean within Agean Sea. With the RAF he took part in a policing

Wed 19 June Gunner William Parker of the Tank Corps says, “We are having a fairly quiet time at present and are just waiting for old Jerry to lead off with the next dance. I hope he will not be too long. If he keeps on at his usual rate he will not last many more months.”

Wed 26 June The funeral of the late Mr Henry Allen took place at Hadleigh cemetery on Saturday afternoon. …. Mr Arthur M Allen, Royal Air Force, on active service was unable to attend the funeral of his father.

After the Great War Oswald Gayford continued to serve with the RAF, in 1933 he held the long distance flying record from England to Cape Town, in 1939 he was Officer Commanding at RAF Wattisham and in 1943 reached the rank of Air Commodore. He died in 1945 and is buried under a CWGC stone in Naughton Village Churchyard. Seven men born in Hadleigh are known to have served in the RAF as ground crew: Arthur Moss Allen, Godfrey John Allen Grimsey, Frederick Charles Grimwade, Alfred Jesse Harriss, Harry William Holmes, Claude Robert Percy and Gurney Richardson. Generally their service made use of their civilian trades.

Outstanding Season for Hadleigh Table Tennis After comfortably winning Division 2 of the Ipswich League Hadleigh ‘A’ team went on to achieve double success by winning the League’s Handicap Cup Competition - which began with 18 teams. In the Final they were clear winners over a valiant Stowmarket Pickwicks Team Hadleigh had to concede points to their opponents but overcame the deficit and won all 21 games contested. The winning team consisted of Steve Holland, Rex The victorious Hadleigh ‘A’ team L to R Manning and 13 year old Daniel Mike Emmerson, Daniel Young, Peter Young their patient play proved Wright (Captain) Steve Holland and too good for their opponents.

Rex Manning Next Season they will return to Division 1 where they had been for the previous 15 Seasons and on current form they should make a good impression.

Hadleigh Owls who played in Division 3 had a mixed Season finishing just below mid-table. This was partly due to losing their ‘star’ player Krystoff Kopec early in the season and being unable to field a settled team for the remainder of their fixtures. However, with new players coming on board there are high hopes of climbing up the Division next season!

Hadleigh Swimming Club News Hadleigh Swimming Club are going from strength to strength with some cracking performances at recent competitions across the county. Following on from our strong performance in February’s Suffolk County Championships, we have gone on to collect a new haul of County qualifying times with another eight months of training to go! Well done to our swimmers, coaches, teachers and helpers – keep up the fantastic work. One of our swimmers, thirteenyear-old Elliot Gladwell is swimming in the Eastern Region Championships in Luton at the end of May – best of luck to him.

As well as individual success, Hadleigh has done very well so far as a team in the Suffolk ASA Summer League. With another round and the Grand Final to go, we’re looking forward to an improved position on last year In other news, our four recently appointed Team Captains have been busy raising funds for the club. Their recent cake sale raised over £130 and was well supported by the community. A big thank you to those who donated goodies or who took some away with them, and also to Hadleigh Pool and Leisure for allowing us to use their venue. Paul Batram Myself and my family would like to thank my neighbours and family for the money I received after Paul passed away. We are donating it to the NCC unit Addenbrookes where they cared for Paul for many weeks. He recovered well after his accident then to find he had cancer which had spread through his body which was too much for him to fight. Hadleigh Bowling Club The new season began on 21 April with a sunny day and an informal team competition and a fish and chip supper to follow so it was a good afternoon, unless I suppose you were a fish. But before that there was the traditional start to the season where all the members roll one bowl in to the centre with the person closest to the jack winning a bottle of wine. Imagine a very large game of snooker and organised chaos. Teams from the club have been playing in various competitions across the county since then with various wins and losses. Early days!

Our open days at the end of April were a huge success with 15 new members joining. It looks like a couple of them haven’t quite got the idea yet but we have a good mentoring system so I’m sure we can get them off the roof on to the green at some point.

News from Beaumont Community Primary School Royalty Day On Friday 11th May 2018, pupils from our Dragonbees class (year 1 and 2) held a ‘Royalty Day’. The pupils are currently reading the ‘Princess and a Pea’. With the current Royal Wedding around the corner, it was a perfect opportunity to experience being Kings & Queens for a day! On Spring Bank Holiday Monday Stoke by Nayland members competed for the Jubilee Salvers, the most prestigious of all Stoke’s mixed competitions. The format is Foursomes with players taking it in turn to drive the ball and then alternate shots are played.

The competition was played on the Gainsborough Course. In lovely weather the players returned some really excellent scores.

The partnership of Lady Captain Elaine Davidson and Del Prichard scored a magnificent 41 points. In second place were Barbara Jones and Robbie Benson. The Salvers were presented by Mens’ Captain Alan Line.

Dixon Dart League Finals and Presentation Evening The Dixon Dart League held their annual presentation and finals night at the Royal British legion club on Monday 23rd April. A large and boisterous crowd were treated to some top class darts throughout the night. Derek Cole rolled back the years to reach the final of the singles competition, but was narrowly beaten 2-1 by Paul Leathers in a nervy, tense game. He did however return in the doubles final with Colin Hynard to win against an unlucky G. Leathers and T. Wade to retain the title. The Trebles was also a close fought match with the Vets trio of Kevin Leathers, Simon Farthing and Ted Harvey winning against George A’s Colin Hynard, Rick Bayly and Derek Cole.

The standard of the ladies darts competition seems to get better and better, with some brilliant darts played by all. Debbie Butcher retained the singles title beating D. Wade. Debbie also won the doubles with partner G. Warner, beating the George pair of Bev Mayes and Laura Wilden in a close final. The KO cup was an all-Cock affair, with the Vets taking on the Rebels. Kevin Leathers gave the vets the perfect start beating Andy Chilton. Not to be outdone, brother Paul Leathers leveled the match beating Ainsley Moult. Cliff Steele put the vets ahead again, winning a close match against Stuart King, but Glenn Bentley produced a great leg of darts to overcome Simon Farthing and square the match. Ted Harvey proved the hero for the vets, as he managed to squeeze past Mark Chaplin to take the win.

Support has been good even though the team has finished fourth from bottom in the Thurlow Nunn League. The pitch has been in excellent condition throughout the season with some fine games taking place. The Reserves have had a superb season and finished in fourth position in the reserves competition. They ended the season with a great win against local rivals Felixstowe by two goals to one. Our second string draw at Saffron Walden with Sam Sharp scoring twice in the draw game. The Veterans lost by five goals to three in a cup semi-final at Great Yarmouth. There are some good teams in the Veterans competition and Hadleigh did well to win the championship. Our Youth Team finished in mid-table and beat Whitton in the last match with Wilding, White and Vardon-Barber scoring the goals.

Prizewinners in the latest draw were Matthew Pryor and Peter Tampion.

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex The 1st XI got their season off to a thrilling start with a 1-run win at Wivenhoe, with Tom Piddington taking 4-11 in 10 overs as Hadleigh tenaciously defended 166. The rest of the first month has been a story of washouts and defeats at Halstead and Ipswich. In fact the team are yet to complete a match at home.

The 2nd XI also started well with a win over Needham Market, but have since lost three on the bounce, including one utterly forgettable encounter at Witham. Things happen at Witham. Or they do when our Seconds rock up there. In recent years it has been 200 stands and centuries from Hinsley and Bloss, but this time, in the gloom, dank and cold, ideal conditions for seam bowlers to exploit, we fell over for just 40. The game was over before the 3 o’clock kick offs!

But at least a game was played – the following week saw our ground unused in glorious weather, Brightlingsea having withdrawn from Two Counties Division 5 and Lakenheath unable to raise a Sunday side. This was the second week in succession our Academy side had received a concession – another concerning sign that local cricket is struggling for numbers.

Our Ladies team are surely team of the month, with two wins to their name to sit proudly at the top of their league. Despite availability issues they were too strong for IES, and then did not lose a wicket in beating Worlingworth, with Frankie Stenning retiring on 30. All our junior sides have played, with our Mixed Under-11s having probably the best result so far, beating Sudbury by just 1 run in the Super 8 format – we think! Sudbury had actually passed Hadleigh’s total, but in the Super 8s all 18 overs are bowled, and in that last over they lost two wickets, losing 6 runs in doing so. It is certainly an interesting format!

I do accept mistakes happen but I would really like the record put straight.

I, Alan Wignall, did NOT miss the same penalty three times. The culprit was Alan Hambling. I know it, he knows it and all the team of that time knows it and to me it is important that the thousands of readers of this magazine, especially the football orientated ones, know it as well.

Hadleigh Hares May: Marathons, Easter Eggs and a European Bronze Medal Another busy month for the Hadleigh Hares. Firstly, there was the small matter of a couple of marathons. In addition to the London Marathon, we also had runners at Brighton, Halstead and Hamburg this month. At Brighton, John Scaife and Scott Ramsey both broke the magic three hour mark with tremendous times of 2:58:12, 2:59:30 respectively, while Joanne Some of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sargent finished her run in a very marathoners respectable 5:40:37 raising money for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Steve Hunt, Dan Widdowson and Karl Fegan took part in the Halstead and Essex Marathon later in the month. This is a particularly challenging course and one which sees very little in the way of support on the way round. Well done to Steve for his 4:11:20 finish and to Dan who managed an excellent 3:08:26 making him 25th overall, and to Karl who made it round in 4:51:35.

The London Marathon this year was run in scorching temperatures which had many runners suffering with the heat. Despite this we had five finishers this year: Joanne Abbott (6:24:04), Rachel Bodsworth (4:24:28), Maria Ward (4:04:15), Karl Fegan (5:55:18) and John Scaife running his second marathon in two weeks (3:23:18). Running in those conditions must have been really tough so massive congratulations to all of them.

Finally on the marathon front, Simon Fenn made the trip to Hamburg to take on 26.2 miles making his way round in a new personal best of 3hours 23 minutes and 6 seconds. Well done to him and to all our 2018 marathoners.

17th April was the Junior sectionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Easter Egg hunt, organised again as a cross country run to earn a chocolate egg. Always a popular event this year was no exception with loads of eager choccy hunters taking part.

Lots of fun and chocolate at the Easter Egg Hunt Finally, huge congratulations to Davina Greenwell who finished third in her age group at the ETU Powerman Middle Distance Duathlon European Championships at Vejle, Denmark. The 10k run/60k bike/10k run took Davina 3hours 47minutes including the two transitions. A tremendous performance to be a genuine European Bronze Medallist!

On the domestic front, Adam Johnson fared well at Great Notely Spring Duathlon coming in 21st overall with Leon Hayward being 3rd Vet and 4th overall. Great work guys!
