Hadleigh Town Council, in conjunction with Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Chamber of Commerce and Visit Hadleigh, have created a new town-wide loyalty scheme. To celebrate non-essential re-opening and to support our local shops following the long periods of closure they’ve endured, Hadleigh now has a loyalty card that can be stamped by any participating stores for your chance to win £100 worth of vouchers between each month from now to November 2021.

Start collecting stamps by picking up blank cards from Visit Hadleigh or your high street retailers. Fill a card with 12 stamps by spending in participating stores (no minimum spend!) Once filled, add your details and drop it in to the Town Council offices at The Guildhall or to Visit Hadleigh on the High Street. Cards received by 9am on 28th of each month will be entered into a draw to win a £100 voucher. Multiple cards may be submitted.

Monks Eleigh Gallery expands Sue and John have made good use of the lockdown period by expanding their Gallery, first opened by Win Gage in 2015.

After taking over the reins last October and the disappointment of two subsequent lockdowns, they both saw the enforced closures as an ideal opportunity to extend the area. The Hadleigh garden photo competition returns for 2021! In 2020, thanks to Coronavirus, we had to hold a virtual event instead of opening up gardens to visit in person (remember those carefree days?) as we usually do. So many people responded brilliantly sending in photos of their gardens, with winners in different categories. It was so successful that we decided to run the photo competition again this year, as well as the open gardens later on.

So hopefully you’ve had your cameras out already and if not there’s still plenty of time! This year you can enter one photo of your Spring garden and one of your Summer garden (ie up to two photos in total) and there will be prizes awarded for each category. Colin Platt has again generously offered to supply the historic Benton End Irises as prizes and will donate an Iris for winners and runners up in both categories.

Photos should be sent by email to: hadleighgardens@gmail.com, with name, address, and a phone number. Closing date 31st July 2021. All contact details will be treated confidentially. The photos will be put on the website anonymously, and the committee will decide on the two winners and two runners-up. Results announced on 15 August 2021.

The Covid-19 pandemic is still having a great The Hadleigh Historian effect on our lives. Recording events of the The Hadleigh Historian present that will become history in the future, Issue 64 June - July 2021 Price £4 Hadleigh’s Local History Recorder Roger Kennell reports annually to Suffolk Local History Council and has given permission for part of his record for 2020 to be reproduced as the front-cover feature of The Hadleigh Historian Issue 64. Roger’s photographs show High Street when, during a short period last summer, it was a 20mph one-way zone and was marked off so that pedestrians would have space to maintain two-metre social distancing.

Published 25 years ago, Down Memory Lane: the diary of Eddie Botwright concerns his life in Hadleigh from 1898 to 1985. Now, Jane Richardson presents the first of a series based on Eddie’s book with additional photographs from the Colin Bull collection (now in Hadleigh archive). Jane calls the series ‘a man who loved Hadleigh’, as apart from his time serving during the First World War (1914-1918), Eddie lived in Angel Street and worked around the town. The first article on his childhood shows the Botwrights to be a hard-working family, when life was tough with none of the modern comforts and facilities that we take for granted today. However, that did not stop Eddie enjoying himself when opportunities came along including Christmas parties at the Methodist Chapel in George Street. A 10-mile circular route to Hintlesham and back was devised by Eddie and his friends, along which they bowled their blacksmith-made hoops and when there was snow on the ground, rode home on their sledges.

A new music, arts and entertainments venue has been set up in Bridge Street and now Ian Grutchfield is working his way through the mountain of ephemera stored there that concerns the building’s history after its closure as a school in 1967. In ‘Opera production at the Old School, Bridge Street’, Ian tells of former proprietor concert pianist Tom McIntosh, formation of Brett Valley Society for the Arts and the specially-commissioned opera Margaret Catchpole, which is based on a true Suffolk story and originally performed in 1979. ‘Holes in Hadleigh’ investigates the sinkhole that recently appeared in Tinkers Lane between Toppesfield Bridge and the football ground. Apparently, after Toppesfield Mill burned down in 1954, the site was cleared except for the water wheel and some rubble, which were left in situ and eventually covered and landscaped. Over the years, the rubble settled and became waterlogged: its collapse caused the sinkhole. While decisions are made as to what is to become of the wheel, Babergh District Council has fenced off the area for reasons of public safety.

This month’s picture is from 1904 when Hadleigh Hall was for sale; then the Hall was an elegant and imposing privately owned mansion, located at the end of Pound Lane, fittingly close by St Mary’s Church, the Deanery Tower and Guildhall.

Sale particulars mention ‘magnificent drawing and dining rooms’, ‘handsomely timbered gardens and grounds…extending to about 3 acres.’ Between 1949 and 1973 the Hall housed a small fee-paying school (Hadleigh Hall School), before conversion into flats around 1975 – within a much smaller and less grand enclosure although the19th century red brick frontage, ornate chimney stacks and other architectural features continue to present a striking exterior. It is Grade II listed. But what of its earliest history?

A manor house existed on the site in the late 10th century - probably earlier. It belonged to Ealdorman Byrhtnoth, a high ranking noble of Aethelred the Unready and the first documented Lord of the Manor of Hadleigh. His manor comprised the house with outbuildings, church, two mills, land and tenants - all bequeathed

by Byrhtnoth to Canterbury Cathedral in AD991. The Archbishops became Lords of this Manor until late 11th century when the Prior and Monks of the cathedral’s monastery assumed the role. Medieval documents reveal new Hadleigh manor houses built in 1297, and around 1400 when the house and about 300 of its approximately 2,000 acres of land were leased to a farmer - both structures on the site of today’s mansion. In 1306 the then 4 acre enclosure included a courtyard; garden with pond, fruit trees and sizeable vine; private chapel; detached kitchen; dairy; dovecote; salt-house; two stables; five large barns for storing different grains and sheds for sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry – all prestigiously roofed with tiles!

Canterbury’s Dean and Chapter leased-out Hadleigh manor house until 1862 when it passed to the Ecclesiastical Commission before being sold into private ownership in 1876. A Golden Year for Hadleigh Dolphins!

1976 Club photo in front of first pool The club has eagerly awaited the completion of the new pool and easing of COVID restrictions enabling our swimmers to finally take the plunge on Monday 12th April 2021. The original pool opened in 1971, with the majority of funds raised for the build by the local residents of Hadleigh. That same year ‘Hadleigh Dolphin Swimming Club’ was formed.

The club has run continuously for five decades, welcoming through its doors countless young swimmers. Many will remember ploughing through the water during training sessions under the watchful eye of the coach, improving techniques, starts, turns, finishes and fitness for future competitions. However, it is with fond memories that I mention the yearly Swimming Club Championships, competing against fellow Dolphins and culminating in an awards evening. During the years that have followed, the club has seen learners become leaders as our young swimmers continued to be involved as part of the coaching team, committee members and parents of little swimmers of their own. past twelve The months have been challenging for all of us but even without a pool during much of 2020 and beyond, training continued.

The club sought alternative swimming facilities, with parents ferrying their children to Felixstowe and Sudbury.

However, as the pandemic increased its grip, this too had to cease, with land1972 Club Championships based training taking its place via Zoom. Now we are back with a band in the town’s beautiful new facility and with competition not too far on the horizon, the Dolphins are looking ahead to the next 50 years with renewed optimism.

We at Hadleigh Swimming Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have been involved with the swimming club over the past 50 years. The continued commitment of the swimmers, parents, coaches, committee and support of local businesses have helped the club to reach this milestone.

Hadleigh Walkers June’s walk on Saturday 12th will revert back to our usual 2nd Saturday in the month schedule. It will be a circular walk of approximately 11 miles starting from St Mary’s School car park at 0930.

This is a pleasant walk on easy going. From Hadleigh, our route will be Lower Layham, Shelley, Sodom & Gomorrah, Pintins, Bacon’s Green, Raydon, Manor Farm, The Woodlands and back to Hadleigh via the Railway Walk. An alternative slightly shorter walk taking in Raydon Great Wood may be available if requested.

As usual, we will have one or possibly two short sandwich stops along the way.

As we have not been walking for some time and the website fees have continued to be paid, we are now in the red. Therefore, we are asking all walkers for an increased voluntary contribution of £2 until our “overdraft” is cleared.

Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at this time of the year.

10 Terrific Reasons to Join Hadleigh Cycling Club for £10 Hadleigh Cycling Club is keen to encourage as many people as possible in the town and surrounding villages to join the Club and raise the profile of cycling locally. As a special incentive, we’re offering a full adult membership for £10 (which can include up to 2 children) and will run from June 2021 to 31st December 2022.

So, what do you (and we) get for your membership?

1. You help us to promote the “cycling for all” message.

Kestrel Wow Day Children in Kestrel and Owl class enjoyed a ‘WOW day’ based around British Monarchs.

Dressed in costume for the day, they also enjoyed a round robin of activities including a quiz about the history of British monarchs, creating a menu for a royal banquet and painted portraits of British monarchs. They are now making picture frames to mount their portraits on ready for display around the school.

Kingfisher WOW Day Kingfisher Class History topic for summer 2021 is 'The Stone Age and Iron Age'.

On Friday 23rd April, to enhance the children’s learning and ignite their imagination they had a fun 'WOW day' enjoying activities with the aim to increase their understanding of the topic and in costume too!

PE Sessions Mrs Clarke from Hadleigh High School visited us at the end of April where children in years 1 and 2 enjoyed some great PE sessions with her. We really enjoyed having her with us for the morning and hope she will visit us again soon.

Theatre Royal Workshops Children in year 6 are enjoying workshops provided by the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds. This project provides them with a memorable end to their primary school education. In a year full of disruption, ‘tiny plays BIG IDEAs’, will provide children with an opportunity to creatively express their thoughts and ideas, to learn new skills and to take part in an end of project celebration with their peers.

Each group of children will get the opportunity to work with a high-quality, professional playwright to teach them the art of play writing. Children will learn about plot, character, storytelling, drafting and staging during two one-hour workshops. By the end of these two workshops, each child will have crafted their own short play and enjoy seeing some being performed at the theatre at the end of June.

Although Jogging through Germany sounds better alliteratively, however fast I stride out could not possibly be construed as jogging! I am now halfway through my virtual 995 miles trip - from Hamburg, I walked south to Hanover, east to Berlin, south to Dresden, west to Leipzig, and am on my way south west to Frankfurt.

Then to Mannheim, Stuttgart, Nuremburg and Munich, hopefully by very early July.

I will then be joining JW on his birthday walks in the second week of July.

Closure of spectacle recycling and thank you Thank you to everyone who has donated used spectacles over the last 30 years. It is estimated that more than twenty thousand pairs have been collected at Dunstone Optometry in Hadleigh during this time and forwarded to Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) for use in Africa.

The charity no longer requires used spectacles, but rather donations towards new spectacle provision for Africa. The decision by the charity was apparently made after a thorough review process but has been bought forward as a direct result of the Coronavirus crisis.

In recent years, there has been a growing understanding of the impact that taking part in the arts can have on health and wellbeing. By supplementing medicine and care, the arts can improve the health of people who experience mental or physical health problems. Engaging in the arts can promote prevention of disease and build wellbeing. The arts can also improve healthcare environments and benefit staff retention and professional development.

Responding to this, the Hadleigh Patient Participation Group (PPG) and the Practice Medical Staff have transformed the Old Dispensary into a mini art gallery.

The exhibits by local artists, have finally returned with a delightful display of drawings by Isla Spraggon.

Nine year old, Isla has loved drawing for as long as she can remember. She is never happier than when creating a picture with her favourite glitter pens.

Isla, who is the daughter of Hadleigh residents Lucy and David Spraggons, is in Class 4C at the Hadleigh Community Primary School.

Fortunately for her, the school gives their students plenty of opportunity to develop their artistic talents. In 2019, it was through the school that Isla entered the Royal Academy of Engineering’s national Christmas card competition to find a suitable design for their organisations’ seasonal greetings. Out of all the thousands of entries Isla’s picture was chosen and circulated, in card form, to their chosen clients.

By submitting her creative pieces to the Blue Peter team, Isla also managed to secure one of their iconic Blue Badges.

It’s too early to decide on her career but Isla is fairly sure, whatever path she takes, it will include her much loved ’drawing’ in some form or another.

The Practice is delighted to exhibit Isla’s work for the first time. The exhibition was ready to be displayed before Covid restrictions came in to force so some of the pictures were drawn when Isla was eight years old.

Neighbourhood Plan Update Hadleigh’s Neighbourhood Plan is due to be restarted! The Planning Advisory Committee have a keen appetite to complete the plan in the coming years.

Town Council staff are undertaking preliminary work to build the basis of the plan for creating and adopting a Neighbourhood Plan. Background research and collation of evidence is underway with the direction of the Planning Advisory Committee. To be clear, this is not decision or policy-making stuff, but the research and analysis that must be provided as evidence to the eventual policies and recommendations that the Neighbourhood Plan will create. The next formal steps for Hadleigh Town Council to pick up the Neighbourhood Planning is to formally re-start by a motion in a meeting then form a working group. We’ll be looking for volunteers from key groups in the town to contribute to this group and help form the policies from the key themes identified, in the plan. Yes! We have re-opened...

Well folks, by the time you are sat down reading this month’s issue of the Community News, The Cock Inn, George Street will have reopened. We closed our doors for the second time on 4th November 2020. Little did we know that it would be the start of summer when we would once again be allowed to reopen to once again serve our loyal customers. It’s been a big change for everyone, both staff and customers alike. People who know The Cock Inn well will remember the huge part that it plays within the Hadleigh area. Many different groups of people use the facilities her to meet up and share in life’s great wonders. The pub was and is an important part of some people’s lives. They frequented the pub to discuss business, talk sport, play pub games, listen to music, swap gardening ideas, make arrangements to go out on bike rides, jogging, short break vacations. The Cock Inn was a wonderful meeting point so sadly missed by many. It was also a place to enjoy great cask ales, ice cold lagers and ciders, indulge in fine wines or indeed, to simply to sit in the garden and enjoy a refreshing gin & tonic or Scotch on ice.

Whatever your tipple or reason, we were there for you. Not forgetting our wonderful Sunday afternoon Soirees with popular vocalists, our monthly Quiz and Buskers nights. We will soon be restarting our weekly popular Wednesday ‘darts for beginners’ nights too. All are welcome. No darts, then use ours.

As you will be aware, there are restrictions which we would kindly ask you to follow and with a collective effort we can hopefully see these being further relaxed in Mid-June and we can all once again return to some form of normality. As we move towards the Autumn we would hope to see the local dart league back in full swing together with our successful bar billiard league.

Of course, national TV sport has not gone away, though now you will be able to watch again with friends. While Premier League football will take a break for a few months we have the EURO 2020 (yes, rearranged from last year) kicking off on the 11th June. For other enthusiast we have cricket and tennis once again gracing our screens. Don’t forget the hugely popular British Lions Tour of current world champions, South Africa too. That kicks off in late July, while in addition, hopefully with a following wind, we will also see the Tokyo Olympics and Para Olympics commence in July. What a great summer of sport! Don’t forget to come and watch on the big screen!

Remember all, have more the doubled the size of our outside garden area too, so there’s bags more room for everyone. All we need now is a little sun. It’s been a long wait, a difficult time, but things are looking up!!

Recycling at The Guildhall Hadleigh Town Council resolved at their Full Council meeting on 22nd April 2021 to set up a public recycling drop-off point for crisp packets, at The Guildhall (find the pedal bin behind the gates opposite The Ram on Market Place), saving them from landfill.

Crisps packets do not need to be cleaned out but please don’t screw them into triangle or ties.

Please drop your empty crisp packets off in the designated pedal bin as regularly as you like being mindful not to wake the neighbours! The gates are open 24/7.

Why not bring your empty glass bottles at the same time and put those into the glass recycling bank on site? The kickback proceeds from this bottle bank are paid to Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity too.

Every time Hadleigh Town Council sends off a box of crisp packets, Walkers/Terracycle will give us points which in turn will be converted to donations to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk In February 2020 my family and I welcomed a new addition to our home: Brennan, a chocolate sprocker spaniel puppy from Norfolk. Having grown up in suburbia without pets, the experience has been a great joy but little did I know just how lucky our timing would be, acquiring her just before lockdown.

As such, I was not surprised that so many people in South Suffolk and across the country rushed to purchase puppies as lockdown saw us spending more time at home and walking on a more regular basis. Unfortunately, the downside of this increased demand for pets has been a corresponding surge in price, attracting those with more nefarious intent and leading to a very troubling rise in dog theft.

This is not a new crime but in the year of coronavirus the rates have rocketed. In Suffolk alone the number of dog thefts reported to the police doubled from 16 in 2019 to 32 in 2020. Many constituents have shared their anxiety with me on this subject, and I am aware how local social media groups have been busy with local people relating their own worries for our four-legged friends. I cannot imagine how upsetting the theft of a pet must be for the owners, and of course, such crimes are incredibly traumatic for the animal concerned. Fortunately, there have been notable law enforcement successes with 83 animals recovered from a travellers’ site in Ipswich earlier this year.

As your MP I have been liaising with Suffolk’s Constabulary and the Police and Crime Commissioner, Tim Passmore, on this matter. They have released information about this crime on their website, including top tips for prevention.

These include avoiding leaving your dogs in the garden or outside kennels if you are not at home, and thinking twice before leaving your pet alone, secured outside a shop or any other location. Finally, the Prime Minister announced three new animal welfare Bills in the Queen’s Speech, and further criminal justice measures.

I hope we can use the most appropriate legislative vehicle to strengthen the law on dog theft and deter this heinous crime.

Blankets for Charity Project Linus UK After months of beavering away with knitting needles and wool the impressive results, over forty of them, were delivered to Philippa Knights’ at Wickham Market just recently. Philippa is just one of many volunteer coordinators who collects quilts and knitted blankets on behalf of the nationwide charity, Project Linus UK. So far this year the group has donated 7,941 blankets. The charity’s recipients are varied from neonatal units, care Jan Devey delivers blankets homes, baby banks, mental to Philippa Knights health support groups and individuals with special needs. Philippa is responsible for Suffolk, specifically Ipswich and surrounding areas, so our contributions will be used and much appreciated locally.

The patient creators of these woolly masterpieces were Glenn Abbassi, Carole Burne, Jan Devey, Sylvia Doust, Lorna Meier, Diane Page and Rosie Slais. All knitters unanimously agreed that working on the squares for the blankets was therapeutic especially during early lockdown. Happily, the simple pattern is easily memorised and can be done while watching T.V even with those programmes requiring sub titles. More knitters are welcome. Life at The Shelley Centre To all the visitors who ‘Strode out for Shelley’ a huge thank you. Your support on May 2nd raised over £1200 for us! Over 60 adults, countless children, and at least 25 dogs took part.

It was a happy occasion.

Some of the money raised goes to the live herd that enjoyed a visit from the chiropractor recently. Lyn always spots when one of the ponies is uncomfortable, and the chiropractor works a magic on sore shoulders or whatever, enabling that animal to get back to work.

They also get visits from the farrier of course, and the vet.

No Zoom meetings for these professionals, its all face to face at Shelley.

Other money is needed for feed; at the time of writing there is so little grass growing that all horse owners are having to buy in extra fodder. I hear that this will have a knock on effect on hay prices next winter. Really, Babs and I, being machines, are so much cheaper to keep!

Back to the live herd, here’s our grey, Alfie, giving Brittney her ride, with David helping her with a task. Close up is Bradley, one of our Friday riders, sitting beautifully well on Tilly whilst balancing a ring on his hat (which he must carry to the other end of the arena without dropping). Our riders have to participate in activities, its not just a case of sitting in the saddle and letting the horse do all the work up here.

Our new volunteers are wonderful, and are slowly being placed where needed. Its much more tricky at present with only about half our riders back but this is the month when we hope to be allowed to open for all.

Well, here we are, halfway through the year and it feels wonderful for our library to be able to offer more and more services both online and increasingly in person too as we all enjoy a bit more normality. News from Kersey School Otters (Reception, Years 1 and 2) Otters Class are having a very wild time this term!

Starting with our new Power of Reading book, ‘Beware of the Crocodile’ and now with ‘One day on our Blue Planet… In the Savannah’.

We have learnt a lot about crocodiles and are continuing our learning about lions.

The children remembered so many facts about the life cycle of a crocodile and wanted to share their knowledge and so went into Owls class to present their findings. Even some of the year 6 children were surprised and learnt a thing or two!

We have also enjoyed writing stories and exploring the vocabulary in these books, some of our favourite words include – thrashing, vicious, fierce, twirling, cruising, lunging, emerge, tremendous, determined, cunning and devious.

In art we have studied the work of Matisse and had a go at collages ourselves. We have used the skills of cutting, tearing, scrunching and sticking to make animals from the Savannah with tissue paper and card. We cannot wait for the school’s art exhibition to show off our creations.

It has been wonderful to all be back in class together and continue the hard work and effort that has been shown this year throughout many different challenges.

Badgers (Years 3 and 4) What a busy time Key Stage Two have been having this summer term. We have been focusing on the Anglo Saxons and at the end of this term, we will be using our DT skills to build our own Anglo-Saxon village. In Science we have had two topics: the digestive system and the circulatory system. With Year 5 and 6 we had an in-depth chat about how social media can warp our senses and can causes people to see their bodies in a negative way. Year 3 and 4 have had fun in English this term by looking at two different stories: The Mousehole Cat and The Stonemouse. We have focused a lot this term on descriptive writing and using all our sense when describing.

Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls have been enjoying the story of Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman as part of our Science work on the Human Body. We have LOVED this incredibly dramatic and controversial story; it has inspired debates, poetry and diary writing. In Maths, we have been learning about measurement, finding area, perimeter and volume of shapes; this week, we have got out the protractors to learn how to measure angles!

Hadleigh & District Flower Club Hello All, I hope this finds you enjoying the merry month of May, it was very welcome to see the rain this month saving lots of crops, gardens, vegetable patches and of course making those naughty weeds grow prolifically.

The committee has resumed meetings on Zoom and, if all goes well with the lifting of restrictions, our first meeting will be on Tuesday 14th September at the URC, Market Place, Hadleigh starting at 7:30. Our demonstrator will be Crystal Dyball from Norfolk. She is a real Norfolk girl and has great flower arranging skills and is very witty with it. The photo shows “Phantom of the Opera” at our local church Flower Festival, let's hope we will be enjoying these festivals once again in the summer. Looking forward to once again meeting up after this long break.

Some wildness in each would create an awful lot of wild meadow.

If you’re like me, you’ll love a neat garden with everything blooming to order. But nature isn’t like that. Part of the reason the otters are back is because the river walk is a nature reserve managed by Babergh.

Fallen trees are deliberately left to decay so they can provide homes for insects which in turn feed the bugs and grubs on which all those voles and nightingales flourish.

Brambles scramble everywhere in the summer only to die back in winter. Nature doesn’t come in straight lines and clipped edges, instead it is wonderfully messy – and out of this richness comes the web of life which sustains us all - you, me and the otters. So next time you’re in your garden or on a walk think about giving a bit back to nature. Don’t disturb that overgrown corner, enjoy that bank of cow parsley. Keep the planning and the tidiness where you need it in the veg plot or the beautiful border - and let a little of Mother Nature back in around the edges.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club As I write this in the middle of May we at last have had some rain and the weather is warming up. The young tomato, pepper and basil plants which have been sitting in the greenhouse for weeks doing nothing but shivering are beginning to show some real growth and now need potting on. In the vegetable beds the mangetout peas that I planted several weeks ago now have now finally appeared above the soil and are all of 1 centimetre tall, as is the chard, and the strawberries now have their flower buds just visible - progress indeed!

As the temperature continues to rise and there is little risk of frost then carry on with successional sowing of salads, carrots and spinach and remove the tops from early broad beans to lessen the risk of blackfly attack, as potatoes begin to show their green leaves earth up the stems to stop the tubers from going green.

It's always nice at this time of year to wander round the garden and discover plants that you have forgotten about over the winter. The alliums are beginning to open out their buds, the camassias seem to have appeared overnight and are really looking good this year and the lovely low growing veronica with it's bright blue flowers set against dark red stems and red tinged leaves seems to appear in new places every year.

The plant in the photograph is the seedhead of pulsatilla, also known as pasque flower or meadow anemone which came from Beth Chatto's nursery in Essex several years ago now. It blooms around Easter time with flowers similar to a hellebore and after flowering the seed heads appear and last for weeks - an asset to the border early in the season. These are from the white flowered variety, but I also have a purple one which is just as good, it has pinky/red coloured seed heads.

They disappear completely over the winter and when the buds start to appear again then you know that spring can't be far away. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

The event is always a big success because everybody enjoys visiting gardens, and the money goes to maintaining the fabric of our historic St Mary’s Church which dates back to the late 13th century.

Interested in learning how to sew or improving on your current sewing knowledge?

Lockdown has made many people re-evaluate their lives, me included. Having spent much more time at home, lots of people have re-discovered old or taken up new hobbies and I feel I have a set of skills worth sharing with others if their interest is in sewing.

When I was 16 I took an apprenticeship in a London fashion house, learning sewing and pattern cutting in the design and sample room. It was just after Princess Diana’s wedding that her dress designers, the Emanuels, chose us to create their first ‘off the peg' range, and I helped to make the first sales samples for them. When I got tired of the London commute I set up on my own, making bridal and bridesmaids dresses for private commissions and for 2 local wedding shops. When I met my husband I got involved in his re-enactment hobby and so began making historical costumes too and of course when people find out that you can sew you become a dab hand at alterations, curtains, cushion covers and I’ve even recently re-upholstered a caravan, (I wouldn’t do THAT again!).

So, are you interested in learning how to sew or improving on your current sewing knowledge? I am offering friendly, fun private lessons in my workroom on a one to one basis, or for two people if you wanted to share the lesson with a friend!

When life returns to ‘normal’ I hope to offer small group classes at a hired venue.

You can choose from a range of lesson types and times, depending upon what you want to learn, including a short taster session to see if you like it, I’ll provided the tea and cake!

100 Years of Two Great Institutions As the Great War came to a close, thoughts turned to the future. The Urban District Council held a public meeting in March 1919 to establish some schemes.

They eventually settled on the erection of a memorial to honour the sacrifice of the fallen and the provision of an institute for exservicemen. Funding for these schemes would come from public subscriptions. A group of local ex-servicemen who had already formed a support group under the banner of ‘The Comrades of the Great War’ received a grant from the fund to purchase their first club house. The large hut was erected on George Street and was officially opened in February 1920. In 1921 it became the British Legion.

Work on the memorial was detailed and thorough and done under the supervision of architect Charles Spooner. A key feature was the roll of honour, the list of names to be inscribed on the memorial. For this delicate task a special ‘naming’ committee was formed. By June 1921 all the works had been completed and an unveiling ceremony was planned.

On Sunday 19 June 1921, ex servicemen under the command of Major Earnest Gales marched to the site from the Drill Hall. Once at the memorial they joined the children of the town with their teachers, a specially selected choir of 36 voices, the council committee members and of course the nearest relatives of the fallen.

Altogether over 800 people found standing room within the limited area of the memorial garden. It was estimated that at least another 1,500 people had gathered outside.

Hymns were sung, Major-General Hare unveiled the memorial and spoke. The Chairman of the Urban District Council, Mr Philip Wilson read the Roll of Honour.

The Very Revd Francis Carter performed the dedication rite. The last post was sounded, the National Anthem sung and then 155 floral tributes were laid on the steps of the memorial.

As we reflect on the last 100 years, we can be proud that these institutions established in the aftermath of great turmoil, have become part of the fabric of our town. The Royal British Legion still resides on the same site on George Street and continues to support the community. The memorial and its garden provides a tranquil oasis in the heart of our town where people can pause and reflect and it continues to act as our focal point for remembrance. www.hadleighww1.com

Hadleigh Community Choir Yes we’re coming back - the choir even a pandemic couldn’t keep locked up forever! So we’ll be back rehearsing in September, Covid and Boris Johnson permitting, aiming for a winter concert 2021.

We are very much looking forward to lots of new singers joining us over the summer for some fun sing-along sessions which will be safe and outside in places like the Deanery Gardens, The Ansell Centre gardens and the Market Square.

Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Suffolk County Council Elections 2021 I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted to re-elect me as county councillor for Hadleigh last 6th May. It continues to be an incredible privilege for me to be your representative at SCC and I will endeavour to continue to work hard for all residents of this wonderful town. I congratulate all those to have been elected to the Town Council and it is reassuring to see the council is now back up to its full strength. I look forward to working with them, the new Mayor, and our other district representatives to help make Hadleigh a better place to live, work, and for our children to grow up in. The election’s turnout of 33% was low in comparison to the average across the county, but consistent with the figures of 2017.

Looking forward to this term, the Suffolk’s priorities in recovering from the pandemic are to strengthen the economy, enhance the environment, and deliver value for money services for taxpayers. Across the county, this council’s plans are: • Harnessing new technology to help older people remain independent in their own homes • Promoting the government's Kickstart scheme to get young adults into work • Install more than 100 new electric vehicle charging points countywide • £10million investment in tackling road flooding • £10m to upgrade 500 miles of pavements • £20m of upgrades to the cycle network • Invest in electric bus services • Install dimmable LED streetlights • Deploy automatic numberplate recognition cameras to curb speeding motorists • Plant 200,000 trees by March 2022 More specifically for Hadleigh the main issues to address and projects to complete will, but not inclusively be: High Street and business recovery – throughout the pandemic I did what I could to support our high street businesses as best as possible. This included committing some of my locally allocated funds for initiatives such as advertising and Hadleigh in Bloom planters. I frequently engaged with business owners to understand their concerns as the situation last year changed. I will continue to take the keenest interest here as it is incredibly important to the economic vibrancy of our town.

Benton Street Traffic Management Safety Measures – the installation was delayed due to the purdah leading up to the election, but these works should commence soon. Their purpose is to improve the safety for pedestrians, other footpath and road users along this street. The design will significantly change the road layout to improve traffic flow, but several on-street parking spaces will be removed as a result. The traffic survey carried out in 2017 provided empirical evidence showing that hundreds of vehicles mount the pavements daily at the narrowest points there.

Once these measures are installed, they will be surveyed again to confirm their level of success, after which any necessary adjustments will be made as appropriate.

Angel Street - some new parking restrictions will be added in the vicinity of Spooners Lane to prevent traffic bottlenecks resulting from inconsiderate parking.

There have been many concerns of HGV traffic here reported to me and this can be reviewed with the forthcoming Suffolk Lorry Plan Review. This review will start this summer and residents and businesses can send their comments to the Town Council who will be collating responses. The Hadleigh SNT have had been enforcing the speed limits here and have issued several notices to motorists exceeding the speed limit.

Bramford to Twinstead Overhead Power Line - this project by National Grid Electricity Transmission intends to reconfigure a new 400kV power lines (the largest pylons) across the Debham Vale and Stour Valley. These lines will traverse the southern tip of Hadleigh where the existing pylons cross from Hintlesham to Layham. This project is needed to connect the 30GW (by 2030) of wind energy generated off the east coast to the main hub in Tilbury. There will be a major impact on our AONB and the councils and MPs from Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex have joined together to express their concerns of this proposal.

Town Mayor’s Update I was greatly honoured tonight (20 May) to be reelected as Town Mayor for the coming civic year.

That meeting was the first to be conducted in person since March of last year. The Covid restrictions have had a similarly limiting effect on my opportunities to meet and talk to people until now, although I was able to join the members of the Memories Cafe at the Ansell Centre today for their first meeting since early last year. I hope very much that as we continue the return to a more normal way of life, I will have the chance to do this much more often. And as I said in my first piece in the HCN when I became Mayor, I welcome letters and emails from you if there is an issue you wish me or the Town Council to look at. If you see me out and about, I’d be delighted to talk to you direct if there’s anything worrying you that you think the Town Council may be able to help with.

What has struck me most forcibly over the last 8 months has been the passionate commitment so many people have to the sense of community we have in Hadleigh, and the widespread desire to improve things for everyone. People may disagree with the Town Council – and with each other – about what should be done, but everyone’s eagerness to do good things is undeniable and heartening.

I hope and believe that we can build on what we found out about our community during the worst days of the pandemic, to ensure that everyone here feels that Hadleigh is a great place to live and work.

To me, the most urgent work we need to do is to bring young people into the heart of our community. There is frankly not a lot for them here, and the rudimentary bus service severely limits their ability to get to places where there is. I fear we have a lot of bored young people in Hadleigh, who are disaffected and eager to get away. That would be a terrible pity, as for generations whole families have spent their lives here, and that continuity risks being broken – if the next generation do not want to stay here, our town will atrophy. So for me the prime objective of the next year must be to develop ways of giving young people good reasons to invest their futures in Hadleigh. To this end the Town Council has established a Working Group to look at this precise issue, and details of how you can be part of its work will be published soon.

Hadleigh Choral Society is thrilled to resume singing, which is great news not only for both the choir and its audience, but also for those who might be interested in joining the group. Under the direction of Christopher Phelps, we perform a mainly classical repertoire with two concerts a year in the beautiful St Mary's Church, Hadleigh, with Colchester Symphony Orchestra and professional soloists. We also stage a summer programme of lighter music and a Celebration of Christmas.

Rehearsals are now underway for our upcoming summer concert on Sunday, June 27th at 3.30 at St Mary's Church. Social distancing and hygiene measures will be in place for those attending this short performance.

The autumn programme will feature Baroque works including pieces by Vivaldi, Haydn and Beethoven, also to be performed at St. Mary's Church. Save the date for this much anticipated concert: Saturday 20th November.

Business grant to boost economic recovery in Babergh and Mid Suffolk A significant new funding scheme to deliver an economic boost and support recovery from Covid is now available to businesses and not-for-profit organisations in Babergh and Mid Suffolk.

The Back to Business Grant is a one-off payment of up to £25,000 to support businesses in their recovery from the impact of Covid 19 and improve their longterm sustainability through resilience and diversification projects.

Designed to support local post covid economic recovery by encouraging projects that enhance visitor experience or increase footfall in town and village centres.

Priority will be given to organisations working in a partnership approach to local projects delivering economic recovery, projects that support job creation and opportunities to improve to business resilience and sustainability.

This grant fund is also open to businesses and organisations who are seeking to grow or diversify their business, create more jobs or increase productivity.

Businesses or organisations trading from Babergh or Mid Suffolk, that meet the criteria, can apply for the Back to Business Grant online with a project outline or summary of activity that will be supported by this funding.

Commenting on the grant, Dr Peter Funnell, chair, Suffolk Chamber in Central Suffolk said: “As businesses and organisations create the ‘new normal’ following an unprecedented year of closures and restrictions, the Back to Business Grant will provide a powerful boost to business growth and wider economic recovery across Babergh and Mid Suffolk.”

In addition to the Back to Business Grant, there is also funding available through the Discretionary Restart Grant to help businesses reopen safely and introduce further covid secure measures.

Businesses that have already received a covid business support grant can still apply for either the Back to Business or Discretionary Restart Grant.

Applications for this round of the Back to Business and Discretionary Restart Grant must be submitted by 13th June 2021.

Annual Parish Meeting Summary of annual reports given at the meeting of 21 April 2021: Please go to www.layham.org to see the full minutes • Suffolk County Council Councillor Jones highlighted some of the key items from the previous twelve months – these included winning £830,000 of funding to develop an outline business case to improve the A12 east of Ipswich, actions taken to support residents during the Covid 19 pandemic and Suffolk 2020 Fund bids approved. Councillor Jones also highlighted some ongoing issues, including the National Grid proposals for upgrading the Bramford-Twinstead line and the proposed new ATNC line from Bramford into Essex.

• Babergh District Council Councillor Ward said, since the start of the pandemic, Babergh DC had distributed a large amount of government support to businesses, distributed its own community grants and worked with partners to support the vulnerable. The ‘Home but not alone’ free phoneline had helped thousands of people across Suffolk. The Babergh and Mid Suffolk Joint Local Plan had been approved in November 2020 and had been submitted for examination. Both councils had also published their Five Year Housing Land Supply position statement, providing evidence that government housing requirements could be met until 2025 and beyond.

• Budget & Finance The Clerk was in the process of finalising the accounts for 2020/21 which would then go for internal audit by SALC (Suffolk Association of Local Councils), before being formally approved by the Parish Council at its June meeting. The main items of routine expenditure were grants to the Village Hall, the Playing Field and the PCC, insurance and Clerk’s salary and tax.

• Emergency Planning Councillor Curran reported that there had been thirty Yellow weather warnings and two Amber ones during the period 31 December 2019 – April 2021. The Emergency Plan communications tree was used to pass the bad weather warnings to parishioners via the Layham Emergency Link Volunteers (ELVs). When the first Coronavirus lockdown occurred in March 2020, the ELVs played a vital role in delivering the information flyers devised by the PC, together with the red and green cards to go in windows. ELVs also paid special attention to those living alone or deemed vulnerable.

• Green Team In October 2019 an organised Autumn Village Clean Up had been held, in line with government guidelines around Covid. A team of volunteers made an impressive difference to the church yard and burial ground as the Community Payback team was unable to visit during the pandemic. In Lower Layham, the new picnic table on Blacksmith’s Green had been maintained by parishioners living nearby. The Dedham Vale AONB and Stour Valley Project had facilitated some stag beetle pyramids and six swift boxes had been installed.

• Village Facilities The War Memorial had been cleaned for Remembrance Day and volunteers from the Parish had cut the grass and tidied hedges. The village benches were in good order. The Parish Council had purchased a hand brush for each grit bin and replaced the shovels. Despite the dog refuse bins, unfortunately used poo bags were sometimes left on the ground.

• Speeding Councillor Paton said speeding had been the main concern when the parish review was carried out in 2019; following a survey, it appeared that over 60% of vehicles through Upper Layham were speeding. The Parish Council had agreed to purchase two SID devices to try and address this, and these had now been ordered. SCC’s ANPR trial used different technology, but would complement the action being taken by the PC. • Highways & Footpaths Any damage to highways was reported to Suffolk County Council via the online reporting tool on the SCC website; members of the public could also report problems in this way. Public footpaths and bridleways were generally in a satisfactory condition. The uneven surface on the footpath past the mill had been reported and the wire netting on the wooden bridge had recently been replaced. The Parish Council was participating in SCC’s Quiet Lanes Suffolk initiative and had put three roads forward to be designated as Quiet Lanes – Water Lane and part of Mill Lane, Shelley Road and North Hill.

• Allotments The six allotment plots situated at Gardeners Close were all occupied. Allotment holders paid an annual rent, plus an equal share of any water used. All the plots were now productive, with a wide range of vegetables, flowers and fruit grown.

• Local History The Covid19 pandemic had prevented members from working together and it had not been possible to research original documents as the Suffolk Record Office had been closed, while the church was closed, access to the village archive had also been impossible. However, members of the group had been encouraged to carry on with personal projects, including a record of the first three months of lockdown as it affected the parish - a copy of which had been sent to the Suffolk Archives.

• Friends of St Andrew’s There were currently nineteen members. Due to the pandemic, it had not been possible to organise any events since the 2019 Christmas sale in the barn at Waterhouse Farm.

• PCC Due to the pandemic, it had only been possible to hold one Coffee, Cake & Chat session at the beginning of March 2020, and there had also been no Sunday lunches or annual plant sale. Plans for the toilet and servery in the church

had also to be put on hold. The Churchwarden, Christine Hempstead, thanked the Parish Council for their annual grant.

• Playing Field Management Committee The pandemic had prevented meetings or working in groups, but individual members of the committee had managed to keep things going. The annual apparatus inspection had been carried out; several repairs had been carried out, including the replacement of four swing seats and the base plate to the slide. Volunteers had repaired the football goal nets, replaced rotting timbers on the slide platform, weeded the apparatus pits and around the willow dome, and pruned and woven the willow dome. The cricket bat willow contractors had felled 17 trees; the third felling of trees since the playing field was purchased.

• Village Hall Management Committee The Village Hall had been closed for most of the year, during which time some refurbishment had been carried out. Both the Chairman, David Pratt, and the Treasurer, Richard Cromwell, would be standing down at the AGM in June, but several parishioners had expressed interest in joining the committee.

• Events Committee Councillor Roberts explained that the aim of the Layham Events ‘Committee’ was to organise fun village events for families of the parish to enjoy and, as a bonus, to raise money for local organisations. In summer 2019 there was a rounders match and free BBQ on the playing field between Upper and Lower Layham. Later in the year there had been a successful Christmas Fayre in the Village Hall, and a donation was made towards the refurbishment of the Village Hall. Councillor Roberts said she hoped that, once Covid restrictions were lifted, the group would resume with the same enthusiasm and start to plan more events.

Layham Playing Field Recently, Simon Bewsher came up with the suggestion that the Layham Playing Field Management Committee should provide a box full of sports kit to promote play on the tarmac surface.

Those who use the kit are trusted to collect it up and put it back in the box when they have finished. Pictured here are the Smith family of Brett Green who are delighted with the provision and use the kit often - it appears to be getting good use.

Playing Field 120 Club Winners for the month of May were: £25 Ticket No 38 Cryer; £15 Ticket No 1 Kelley Layham’s swift colony Every May, swifts that have spent our winter in South Africa, return to nest under the church roof. Sadly, what used to be a colony of 30 – 40 birds has reduced by half in recent years. A few months ago, the Parish Council Green Team spotted an appeal by Alex Moore da Luz, Nature Recovery Officer for the Dedham AONB and the Stour Valley Project, for the identification of locations where swift boxes might be beneficially placed to encourage more nesting. An application from Layham was successful and six boxes have been placed (with the kind permission of John English) along the eves of the barn at Netherbury Hall opposite the church.

A calling device is fixed in each box with the intention to attract birds to investigate, and possibly use, the boxes.

Coppicing and pollarding Some great tree management can be seen in the meadow through which the ‘Brook’ flows in Lower Layham. Both coppicing and pollarding have taken place recently – traditional methods of tree management that are not often seen nowadays. Both are captured in the same photograph – the hazel coppice, cut almost to the ground, is in the foreground and the pollarded willow can be seen in the meadow beyond.

Suffolk County Councillor for Samford District Gordon Jones has been Suffolk County Councillor for Samford District and thus has represented Layham for several years. He decided not to run for office again this year. He has been very supportive and has managed to attend the great majority of our Parish Council meetings often taking up issues or making enquiries for us. We thank him for his support and wish him well in his ‘retirement’.

Taking his place will be Georgia Hall who won the recent election.

Dear Sir It is good that the new wooden footbridge bridge over the River Brett is now open again. The steps on the Riverside Walk side of the bridge had some greenery from overhead trees on them which I have removed with a broom. I will regularly sweep these steps of debris as they could be a little slippery.

The footpath from Benton Street across the other river footbridge, near to the former Toppesfield Mill Site subsidised area, does not at present join Tinker's Lane. It would be a simple exercise for the Suffolk County Council or Babergh, or which ever authority is in charge of footpaths, to construct a short footpath from the south side of this still secure narrow Brett footbridge to meet Tinker's Lane, on the downside of the area where the old burnt out mill once stood.

Thus a longish walk from Benton Street, to the High Street and Duke Street to the River Brett and the Mill Field would be avoided, this cost would be minimal and a footpath should surely be in place without any delay.

The recent severe flooding of the Brett and its Hadleigh Riverside Walk area had brought from upstream a number of Himalayan Balsam seeds which are now germinating. The problem is not great and I am destroying many seedlings of these invasive plants before they take hold.

Dear Sir I would like to thank everyone who supported me in the Town Council election last month and wish those who were successful good luck in the months ahead.

It is worth mentioning here for those who are not aware that there has been a barrage of bile and bullying using on line media where anyone can make comments from anonymous sources. I welcome free press and democracy like everyone but question the merits of some recent on line coverage.

Our local news should be celebrating and promoting the great activities that are happening, the charitable works of people, the friendliness of our town and not the scurrilous shock tactics that it currently irresponsibly employs.

What is wrong with writing kind words? What is wrong with writing balanced views? What is wrong with having this responsible position in local news and providing a worthwhile and generous service to the community that you serve?

We are all familiar hearing stories of school children bullying or celebrities being harangued in the press resulting in mental health issues and in the worst cases, suicide.

The innuendo and unnecessary critical comments is achieving very little but showing our young people that the adults pedaling this are falling short of the standards of decency and respect that parents and the wider community are building with them and teaching them about.

We are a small market town with a strong community ethos. One wonders what people visiting our town reading about us, or those reading social media before deciding if they want to move here, would make of this barrage ridiculing the efforts of those standing for election or volunteering/working in the spirit of community.

One shudders to think is this an attempt to reduce us to keeping quiet and not drawing attention to ourselves to avoid this harassment to enable the bullies to win the day and reduce the community to silence and fear.

I fear keyboard warriors are very dangerous. Young people if you are reading this, or concerned parents please take note and explain to our young people.

Please believe that not all adults behave in this way and that the best way to carry yourself is to treat people with respect and dignity and be proud of yourself if you decide to serve your community in whichever way your talents take you.

Dear Sir We all know just how important trees are when it comes to fighting climate change, supporting wildlife and reducing flooding risk. They are also beautiful and good for our wellbeing. So when Babergh District Council recently offered free trees and hedges to be planted in the coming Autumn, we thought that this was an opportunity not to be missed. Working closely with Hadleigh Town Council, we are now compiling a list so that we can submit a bid for some trees and this is where we need your help.

Can you help us to identify where these trees and hedges can be planted. It could be in your garden, on your land or in a communal area in your neighbourhood. Perhaps where an existing tree or hedge has been damaged.

We do need to avoid play spaces for children and we don’t want to get too close to properties, but virtually anywhere else is possible.

Dear Sir Are you craving socialising with Hadleigh friends but wary of Covid-19? We remain cautious at Hadleigh Old School - our own arts and entertainment events await the removal of government restrictions due in late June, at the time of writing this letter, the lifting of the strictest rules is in jeopardy due to a new strain of the virus. In the meantime, we are organising an outdoor event which seems the safest way to enjoy ourselves.

At 2pm on Sunday 11th July 2021, Holy Hounds of Hadleigh, a novelty dog show will be held in the beautiful Deanery Gardens. Perhaps like us you remember the annual church fete, and some 7 or so years ago we entered the dog show element with our black and tan rescue Jess. Jess did not win as she fell asleep during the ‘Best Rescue’ category which did not impress the judge who was the chief vet of Highcliff Veterinary Practice! Admission is £10 for any size of family of humans + canines and includes entry to up to 5 classes - such as Dog thatlooks-like-its-owner, Waggiest Tail, Junior & Veteran Handlers (show a trick) and Best Dressed in-a -dog-collar. Thanks to Father Jo Delfgou for kindly letting us use the Deanery Gardens. Funds raised will go towards the Friend's appeal for maintenance of St Mary's Church and Deanery Tower.

Everyone is welcome to what we hope will be a happy afternoon: we have rosettes for the winners and refreshments too.

Some of you contacted me during the campaign with the most lovely messages of support, for which I am most grateful. I also wish to thank the many people who helped me in my campaign - I was so lucky to have a tremendous group of enthusiastic supporters. I could not have achieved the close result that I did without this wonderful team behind me. I enjoyed meeting many Hadleigh residents on the doorstep - meeting you gave me a good opportunity to hear your concerns. As I write this letter, I am still receiving calls from people assuming that I was successful, but no, unfortunately, I did not quite manage to achieve sufficient votes to win the County seat. More people (not that many more) clearly wished to vote for the party they vote for nationally and that is democracy.

Let’s hope as our County Councillor he finally manages to sort out some of the highways problems (such as speeding traffic in Angel Street and potholes) that bedevil Hadleigh and which you were complaining to me about. Occasional speed watches are not sufficient or the answer.

Popular Village Fete and Dog Show returns Monks Eleigh Fete and Dog Show will be held on Saturday 3 July at the Recreation Ground, Church Hill, Monks Eleigh IP7 7JL, featuring something for all the family. Entry is free and there will be the BBQ, bar and live music; stalls to browse including good quality pre-loved clothes; children’s activities, traditional games and not least the fantastic family dog show. There is a small charge to enter your dog, more details to be posted on the Monks Eleigh Facebook noticeboard. The fete is being held a month later than usual to comply with the Government’s roadmap for events.

As well as being a lovely afternoon’s entertainment, it raises funds for the fabric of the village church. Hadleigh Community Primary School Nursery Open Day On Saturday 22nd May we held an open day to show prospective children and parents around our wonderful Nursery and Forest School provision. The children and parents had the opportunity to see our indoor and outdoor areas of our traditional Nursery as well as our woodland setting including our new 'Hedgehog Hideout'.

Hadleigh food project hopes to provide recipe for success Babergh District Council has partnered with a local deli to offer free cookery classes to the district’s most vulnerable residents – enabling participants to learn vital new skills and form lasting friendships.

The council’s communities team is working closely with Fork Kitchen & Deli, of Hadleigh High Street, on the new initiative, due to start at the deli in July.

Renowned chef Justin Kett will run the free cookery classes, which promote nutritious meals that reduce food waste – supporting the council’s ongoing ambition for communities with bright and healthy futures.

During the course of four sessions, participants will learn how to prepare various meat, vegetables and pulses and grain dishes on a budget.

Following the classes, attendees will receive recipe cards and ingredients to help replicate the recipes – empowering them to make cheap, healthy, and tasty meals in the comfort of their own home.

In addition to teaching new practical skills, the course aims to reduce social isolation throughout the district. A ‘friendship group’ will be created to allow participants to remain in touch once the classes have finished – offering a chance to form lifelong relationships to alleviate loneliness.

Course attendees will also receive a slow cooker from The Rural Coffee Caravan after the success of their Cooking with Kindness Appeal, which secured generous donations of slow cookers to tackle food and fuel poverty across Suffolk.

The slow cookers will help with the preparation of healthy meals for those lacking in kitchen equipment, who may currently be reliant on preparing food of little nutritious value using only a microwave or kettle.

Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council cabinet member for Communities commented: “I am delighted that our council has worked with Fork Kitchen & Deli and The Rural Coffee Caravan to launch this exciting new project – and would like to thank our partners for their invaluable involvement.

“It’s also wonderful news for Hadleigh to have been selected as home to the project, which, along with recent improvements to the skate park and swimming pool, will play a key part in our vision for the town to be a great place to live, work, learn, visit, and experience.”

Justin Kett, head chef and owner of Fork Kitchen & Deli said: “We are very proud to have been asked to help in what we feel is something that is a truly positive experience to have come to Hadleigh and being a new business our selves really makes us want to help the community in any way possible as this is something we at Fork have as one of our key values.”

Initially, there will be two courses on offer throughout the summer – one for isolated and lonely residents and the other targeted specifically at families.

Anyone attending the family course should be aged 12 and over, however funding will be provided to help with childcare costs for parents with younger children who would like to take part.

Those interested in participating in either course should ideally be from Hadleigh or the surrounding villages, although if the pilot proves to be successful, there are plans to roll out the project across Babergh and Mid Suffolk.

Further details, including course dates and how to apply to be part of the project, can be found on the council’s website and those wishing to participate should register their interest by the end of June.

Our project to reinstate the 1580s Long House here at Orchard Barn is at last making good progress, now that Covid restrictions have allowed us to continue work on the timber frame.

We are delighted that some of the original 500 year old timbers could be repaired, and these will be used in the build, along with new timbers cut from local trees. The wooden frame is made of green (unseasoned) oak and fits together using mortise and tenon joints which are secured by seasoned oak pegs instead of nails.

In all, we will need over 700 wooden pegs, each one being made by hand using a draw knife and a shave horse.

If you would like to volunteer to help make these pegs and can commit to a day each week, training is free and we would love to hear from you!

Morrisons donation to Sesaw A surprise delivery of food was gladly received at Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare in Leavenheath last month. Alanah, the Community Champion of Morrisons in Hadleigh, arrived with a large quantity of cat food which was sent direct from the supermarket's main warehouse.

The charity was suggested by a colleague at the shop which has hosted a food collection box for SESAW since 2013.

Alanah said that her job had been challenging during the Pandemic but she looked forward to coordinating fundraising events when restrictions were finally lifted.

Before returning to the store she stopped to meet some of the rescued cats that will benefit from the generous donation and posed for a few photos.

A significant new grant fund, launched by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, is set to support the recovery of local businesses reopening after lockdown but unable to access the Government’s Restart Grant scheme.

The councils’ Discretionary Restart Grant is designed to help with costs associated with reopening following the lifting of lockdown restrictions, to help businesses resume trading at pre-covid levels.

The grant will be a one-off payment of up to £18,000 for eligible businesses.

Eligibility and payments will consider the scale and size of business, impact of Covid, permitted opening dates and anticipated reopening costs. It cannot be used to cover salaries, fixed costs such as utilities, or be accessed by businesses outside the districts.

Business owners must submit a new application for the Discretionary Restart Grant regardless of whether they have received a previous Covid business support grant. There are no automatic payments for either the Discretionary Restart Grant or Government Restart Grant.

When applying, businesses must provide: Details about their business, including evidence that the business is located in Babergh or Mid Suffolk Business insurance An overview of the impact of the covid lockdowns Evidence of how the grant will be used Applications for the Discretionary Restart Grant must be submitted

by Sunday 13 June 2021.

Fiona Duhamel, assistant director for economic development and regeneration at Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, said: “After a year of unprecedented challenges for businesses across the country, the Discretionary Restart Grant can provide business owners with much needed financial support to get them back on their feet and trading as they were before the introduction of lockdown restrictions. “We are urging businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk who have not been able to access the Government’s Restart Grant to find out whether they are eligible and to apply as soon as possible.”

Samantha Vinyard-Jones, Growth Hub Manager at the New Anglia Growth Hub, commented: “With the easing of lockdown restrictions, businesses across Suffolk are starting to look forward and explore ways to access support to help them thrive. Whether it is applying for financial grants or accessing business advice and guidance, we are working with businesses large and small to help them understand and access all the support that is available to them.”

• The Last Bread Pudding by Nick Warburton, directed by Malcolm Hollister, is a clever and comical look at the committee meeting of an amateur drama group who are meeting to discuss a new play. They say that art reflects life, and this piece aims to prove it with all of the dramatic cliches in the script reflected in the playing out of real life events. Taking an affectionate look at ourselves!

French’s Care Haven Hello everyone, I thought for this month’s readers, I would share with you all, a lovely photo of Sue with Lucy our therapy dog on her lap, Sue is a new volunteer for us at French’s. Sue lives locally and read about our charity and the help we need, so contacted me to see when the best time would be to pop into our rescue.

When Sue arrived she casually gave us the wonderful news of a fund raising event that she had done for us. Sue called her fund raiser 100 March, where she walked 100 miles through the month of March, raising just over £550. How amazing is that! It was one of those times when I was not expecting such good news and felt overwhelmed with how kind some people can be, so Thank You to Sue for her support. Sues money will go towards one of our many bills.

Since last summer me and my team of volunteers have been asking for help from someone out there who could provide us with a large summer house of no less than 16ft wide, or help us buy the summer house we need, but sadly no one has come forward to help. We are getting pretty desperate, because we have no where for our visitors and the people we work with to have a drink, have their lunch, or sit inside for talks. It was suggested that we could always have a plaque on the summer house, of a person you know that was or is an animal lover and have it as a memorial plaque in their name? Would you like that for your husband, wife or relative?

I already have in my mind a small new garden area being designed around the summer house, where volunteers if they wish, can help us with. Once we have this in place we can then organise some open days. I am looking forward to that day and am keeping everything crossed, that this will happen.

Frenchs had a full pallet of small animal food that we had spare, which was donated to us from Pets at Home, so in April we took a van full of the animal food and bedding over to Suffolk Re-homing Centre, in Ipswich. Tracey at the rehoming centre who helped unload the food said “Thank you so much, this food will go to the people who are fostering our animals, while we find a permanent home for them” it is so rewarding to be able to help others in any way we can.

By autumn this year with more fingers crossed, we will be having a quiz night for all to come to and have some fun, yes that is right, fun, after a tough year we all need to have a gathering and a laugh together. As soon as I have a date I will let you all know. I am also trying to sort out a barn dance as well, I am probably getting ahead of myself, but hey ho.

French’s Care Haven has launched their own 100 club, so please come and join in our new 100 club. It gives you the chance of winning a cash prize whilst helping us in raising money for our amazing charity. For just £30 a year, you could win up to £50.00 in the monthly draws. The money raised will help with the upkeep and treatments to maintain and improve the life of the horses, ponies, and donkeys that French’s Care Haven currently takes care of. I’ve been living in my privately rented flat for years. I generally have a good relationship with my landlord, but I just can’t get them to carry out various repairs that have built up. How can I get them to act - and what exactly do they have to do?

This must be a very frustrating situation. The law states that your landlord must provide accommodation that is safe, healthy and free from things that could cause serious harm. You don’t say exactly what repairs are needed. If you have problems such as electrical wiring that you think might be faulty, or there’s damp, or an infestation by pests, the landlord has a legal obligation to put things right.Landlords are also responsible for the maintenance of the general structure, and fittings such as boilers and radiators; basins, baths and toilets; and the drains.

The first step is to contact your landlord again, in writing. Include photographs of the problems. Keep a record of all communications and evidence relating to the disrepair.

If that doesn’t prompt any action, the housing advisers at Citizens Advice can help with next steps. These could include contacting your local council (who will have dedicated officers for dealing with disrepair in private rented properties) or asking for a visit by the environmental health team. Tenants can take their landlords to court to force them to carry out repairs. However, it’s worth getting some advice and thinking carefully before embarking on this route.

One Year On….

This time last year we were just getting used to living with the Covid pandemic. It rocked our world and sadly it’s not completely over yet. We’ve made huge progress since then though, with millions of people vaccinated and the devastating numbers reducing to a much more manageable level. Morrisons donation to Sesaw A surprise delivery of food was gladly received at Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare in Leavenheath last month. Alanah, the Community Champion of Morrisons in Hadleigh, arrived with a large quantity of cat food which was sent direct from the supermarket's main warehouse.

The charity was suggested by a colleague at the shop which has hosted a food collection box for SESAW since 2013. Alanah said that her job had been challenging during the Pandemic but she looked forward to coordinating fundraising events when restrictions were finally lifted.

Before returning to the store she stopped to meet some of the rescued cats that will benefit from the generous donation and posed for a few photos.

News from Stoke By Nayland Lets start with another Hole in One: Matt King (picture attached) produced an ace at the Par 3 9th hole on the Gainsborough Course. Using a 7 iron on the 196 yard hole which drops steeply downhill. His playing partner had already hit his tee shot to 2 feet from the pin meaning they had a total of 3 shots between them!

This was Matt's 3rd hole in one! He's now had 1's on al the Par 3's on the front 9!

Stoke by Nayland GC held Round 2 of The Laird Stableford competition for the men's section on Saturday 24th April. There are 7 rounds in total with an individuals best 3 scores counting. It was another sunny, dry morning although frosty at first the temperature did warm up a little during the round.

Division 1 winner, David Camm was in hot form though! After parring the first 2 holes he came tumbling down on the tricky 3rd hole on the Constable Course with a treble bogey! However he didn't let this affect him parring the next 2 holes and scoring a birdie 3 at the difficult 6th. 3 putts on holes 8 & 9 didn't held the cause but still left him on 19 points after 9 holes. David dropped a couple of shots over the next 4 holes, but made a great par at the long 14th hole. The closing 4 holes proved vital though, finishing with birdies at the Par 5, 15th hole & at the Par 4 17th left him with 22 points on the back 9 and 41 points overall. This was enough to secure a 1 shot victory over inform past captain, Ian Thompson who shot a gross 78 which resulted in 40 points. Ian's round included 5 birdies & 3 pars. 3rd place was Alex Royce shooting a gross 72 which included 2 birdies & 14 pars culminating in 39 points Division 2 was also closely fought with Brian May taking top spot with 41 points (2 birdies & 7 pars), beating Leigh Rivers into 2nd on count back, also scoring 41 points. 3rd place was Colin Pottle on 39 points.

Division 3 saw Men's Captain, Richard Allen produce some great golf with 40 points which included a birdie & 3 pars pipping Alan White ocb, also on 40 points into 2nd. 3rd place was Robert Tokley on 39 points.

After 2 rounds of the Laird the top 3 are, Joe Hanlon 42+35=77, Brian May 34+41=75 & David Camm 34+41=75.

The Jubilee Salvers Competition on Monday 3rd May was played in cold, windy conditions on the Constable Course. Luckily every one of the 60 competitors got in before the evening rain started. It was a Foursome Mixed competition which is a difficult format anyway, let alone in bad weather conditions.

The proud trophy winners in 1st place were Ian and Bev Thompson with 38 points – congratulations to them.

Hole in One! Graham Stubbs, who recently joined Stoke by Nayland, scored a spectacular hole in one on the difficult 200 yard 18th hole on the Constable Course.

Taking a driver off the green tees, Graham's sweetly struck shot pitched at the front of the green, before skipping into the hole, to the delight of Graham and his playing partners.
