Hadleigh on Show...

5th October 2019 at Hadleigh Town Hall One of the many things that makes Hadleigh such a great place to live is that we have so many people who want to contribute their time to our community. To celebrate this, provide an opportunity to attract new members and volunteers, or just to have a good time, we are holding a special community day - Hadleigh on Show. If you run a not-for-profit organisation in Hadleigh and have not booked your place for Hadleigh on Show, contact us now - the closing date for booking space is 31st July 2019.

The event will take place at Hadleigh Town Hall on Saturday 5th October 2019 – we hope to occupy the whole building. Tables for exhibitors are only £5 each (you can have multiples of tables). Donations are welcome. We would like to thank our main sponsor, The Hadleigh Thrift Shop, as Barbara’s generous donation has enabled us to keep the price low for exhibitors and allow free entry for visitors to the event. It will be a great day with plenty of entertainment - there will be musical entertainment from Hadleigh High School, Hadleigh Community and St Mary’s primary schools and a fashion show, with much more entertainment to be announced nearer the time. We already have sports clubs, choirs, churches, social clubs taking part - so contact us now to make sure your group is included.

Moving in 2019?

Don’t pay twice for conveyancing When you move home, selling and buying property, you will need to employ the services of a conveyancing solicitor to deal with the legal aspects of the transaction, for which there is a legal fee.

Paying twice when transactions fall-through What many home movers don’t realise is that if your transaction falls-through, which happens for many reasons and with increasing frequency, you will still be charged by your conveyancing solicitor for the legal work undertaken up to the point the transaction fell-through. Rightmove reports that nearly 30% of property transactions fell-through in 2018*, which is significantly more common than most people realise. Some commentators also believe the current economic uncertainty and slow property market may cause this percentage to increase as buyers and sellers become more cautious and risk-averse, making them more likely to pull-out of a deal.

How to avoid paying twice for conveyancing The only way to protect yourself from the risk of paying twice for your conveyancing is to instruct a no sale, no fee conveyancing solicitor. Hadleigh Evening WI May is the month when we have our Annual General meeting. This is usually very formal but since, for various reasons, a number of our members were unable to attend, we had a very cosy and informal meeting.

Glen Abassi and Sheila Webb were elected onto the Committee. Sadly, it was the end of Sophie Rickards 3 year term as President and we were all agreed that she has done a wonderful job. Fortunately, she will remain on the Committee and she will continue to organise our Lunch Club, which would not be the same without her. This month we are meeting at Milsoms.

Sophie thanked all those people who had helped her during her term as President, especially our Secretary, Carole Cranston and our Treasurer, Ann Porter. Without these two hard working ladies, our W.I. would not function.

As Pat Rocks has just celebrated her 90th Birthday!!, she brought along a lovely cake to share and we provided nibbles and glasses of prosecco with which to toast this landmark birthday.. It was a very enjoyable evening.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 18th, June at 7.30 pm in the Seminar Suite above the Library.

The 180th Hadleigh Show Saturday 18th May 2019 The weather was near perfect for our 180th Hadleigh Show and visitors certainly flocked to Holbecks Park to join in our celebrations.

The highlight of the Show for many were The Monster Trucks who were big and noisy and thrilled the crowds with their car crushing antics. An extra bonus this year was the chance to get up close to an Apache helicopter from nearby Wattisham airbase and thanks go to 3 Regiment Army Air Corp for making this happen.

With record numbers of livestock entries the rings were packed with a huge variety of breeds and this made for a wonderful spectacle in the Grand Parade in the middle of the afternoon. The Flower marquee celebrated our anniversary with classes covering all aspects of the show whilst the Food Hall, food courts and cookery demonstration area was also a must for food lovers with all different types of cuisine on offer. Numerous local trade stands were showcasing their businesses whilst the Rural Craft Marquees was, as usual, filled with a spectacle of colour and talented craftsmen. The Art Tent once again showcased art, pottery and sculptures from many local artists with visitors getting the chance to vote for their favourite painting. The new access track from Coram Street for cars and show vehicles worked well in its first year and we hope the closure of Duke Street to vehicles made for a more pleasant arrival at the show for those of you who walked in from the town.

The Hadleigh Farmers’ Agricultural Association would like to thank everyone who has supported or visited the show this year and helped us celebrate our 180th Anniversary in style.

Thank You, from your newly Re-Elected District Councillor I would like to say a huge thank you to those residents of Hadleigh South who elected me as your Babergh District Councillor on 2nd May 2019. Having recently decided to stand as an Independent candidate, I was happily surprised to win with such a resounding margin – 832 votes, which was more than double the votes of the next two candidates put together.

I could not have managed such a successful campaign without the very kind help of a huge number of friends and supporters who gave up their time to help with my leaflet, deliver it to every home in the Hadleigh South ward (since the boundary changes it is now a massive ward, covering the majority of Hadleigh) and display posters on their homes. Thank you also to the people who I spotted with my leaflet in their windows.

I will do my best to justify the confidence that you have placed in me by working hard for Hadleigh and the District.

Hadleigh Cycling Club will be running the fifth annual Gayford Flyer on Sunday, 15th September 2019. The Gayford Flyer is a noncompetitive cycle sportive. There are two signed rides of 62 miles (100km) and 31 miles (50km). Full details and the story of Oswald Gayford can be found at www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk Entry is via the British Cycling website (www.britishcycling.org.uk) and the last day is Sunday, 8th September. There is no entry on the day. Riders pay ÂŁ12.50 to enter and helmets are compulsory. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sportive was fantasticâ&#x20AC;?, said Mike Motteram, Chairman of Hadleigh Cycling Club. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most of the riders and their families stayed around and enjoyed refreshments and live music at The George.â&#x20AC;? British Cycling said that the Flyer â&#x20AC;&#x153;was a super event â&#x20AC;&#x201C; well thought through, well executed and very enjoyable to be part of.â&#x20AC;? One of the entrants emailed afterwards,â&#x20AC;?Completed the Spitfire route. Thought it was one of the best sportives I've done, friendly marshals, riders, superb route and great atmosphere, mind you the weather couldn't have been better. I'll be signing up next year.â&#x20AC;?

Our Cycling Club is anxious to offer the broadest range of opportunities for local folk to enjoy cycling. We want to attract the â&#x20AC;&#x153;super fitâ&#x20AC;? and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;less than super fitâ&#x20AC;?. During the summer we have rides on Mondays, Fridays, some Saturdays and Sunday.

Why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 8am, with a guaranteed cafĂŠ stop, weather permitting. Adults and â&#x20AC;&#x153;capable children accompanied by an adultâ&#x20AC;? are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles.

The joys of the summer term at St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s are, as always, tempered by the preparation for and endurance of the Year 6 SATs. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve all coped very well and have been rewarded by a day out in London, a great treat which includes a walk along the South Bank, exploring the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tudor history, a picnic lunch while enjoying the antics of the street entertainers, and a visit to both the Science and Natural History museums! Year 5 have also been studying the Tudors and are now immersing themselves in the tragedy of Shakespeareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Romeo and Julietâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

They have also fitted in 4 days of Bikeability, an extremely valuable activity which teaches them how to cycle safely on the road. All the children who took part enjoyed it and felt much more confident in their cycling ability at the end.

Instructors Andy and Chris were impressed with their focus and achievement.

Collective Worship Our Christian value this term is Friendship and we have had visits from Father Jo and Brian Hempstead to our Worship to reinforce this important value. Year 3 kept us spellbound during their class Worship with their version of the story of the paralysed man and the determination of his friends to help him.

Mr Brisland, retired Deputy Headteacher, also came into assembly to tell the children another version of this great story of friendship.

Then there was the excitement of the visit of Jonathan from Brazil, linked with the Baptist Church in Hadleigh, who came into worship bringing lots of information about the language and geography of his country. He taught the children a song in Portuguese and afterwards went to year 4 and year 2 to talk in more depth and answer questions about Brazil.

The children in year 2 have been rising to the challenge of their own SATs preparation and showing how much progress they have made over the year.

However, they have also had time to produce some great art work for the Hadleigh Show on the theme of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;From farm to forkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, as well as topic work on Brazil. In science they have been looking at seeds and the dispersal of seeds, and enjoyed making their own â&#x20AC;&#x153;helicopterâ&#x20AC;? seeds.

Topic work in year 1 has included studying castles and the children are excitedly looking forward to their trip to Hedingham Castle and the chance to get a flavour of medieval life. Meanwhile, Daphne the Story Lady has been taking the children with her as she flies around the world on her magic carpet, looking at stories from different cultures. She expects to land in North America next!

Down in the Nursery the children are keeping up their visits to the residents of Sydney Brown Court. They have been making and sharing pizzas together, and as the weather improves â&#x20AC;&#x153;gardeningâ&#x20AC;? has been taking place, including a competition to see who can grow the tallest sunflowers. This initiative has really blossomed, with the children and the old people getting to know each other well.

Please support Hadleigh United Football Club Veterans in their next challenge to raise vital funds for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust In June 2018 one of our players daughters Isabelle Kossick was transferred to Addenbrooke’s hospital to undergo intense treatment for Leukaemia. The C2 ward at Addenbrooke’s treats all children with different types of Cancer.

The majority of the amazing facilities on the ward including the children’s playroom, school and play area are charity funded. The ward also has play team specialists that not only keep the children entertained during their stay they also assist in distraction therapy, which can support them during cannulas being fitted for Radiotherapy. Without funding none of these facilities or staff would be available for the children to use. The HUFC Veterans are organising an arduous ‘30 mile drop’ which will see teams of 4 blindfolded and dropped 30 miles from home in the dark with nothing but their intuition (and some basic kit) The first team home will be crowned champions!

The teams will not be allowed any cash, mobile phones or any mode of transport and have just 24hrs to make it home...there maybe a few surprise challenges along the way. We will ‘tag’ each team so you will be able to track your fave players live online and follow their journeys...hopefully they will be going in the right direction!

Whatfield Vintage Road Run On Saturday 6th July Whatfield will be holding its first Vintage Road Run. A variety of classic vintage vehicles, including cars and steam engines, will be leaving from the Village Hall (except for the larger engines, which will be leaving from local farms) at 10 am. After following either a 9 or 21 mile route, with stops at local pubs for refreshments and lunch, they will return to the Village Hall for a line-up at 5 pm.

All are welcome to see them off and return. Why not make an evening of it?

When Kingsley Healthcare acquired former Fria ars Hall Nursing Home in 2017 there was a lot of workk to do to restore the trust of local people who had seeen the previous service closed down after a shocking Care Quality Commission (CQC) report.

Howeverr, following a complete refurbishment,, restoring the country property to its former gloryy, the neew team at the rebranded Hadleigh Nursing Home has led a remarkable turnaround of fortunes.

Hadleigh Nursing Home welcomes Tracey as new activities coordinator Hadleigh Nursing Home’s new activities coordinator will be no stranger to people in the town. For Tracey Alexander has held all kinds of positions and been involved in many different groups in Hadleigh. She has joined the team at Hadleigh Nursing Home after working at another care home for five years as head of activities. Tracey said: “It is really important for a care home to be at the heart of the local community and I am really keen for our staff and residents to engage with the local community. “We love to welcome local schools, playgroups and community groups into Hadleigh Nursing Home. Please contact me at the home if you have a suggestion for an activity or event you could help us with.”

Tracey in the garden at Tracey is a member of Hadleigh Hadleigh Nursing Home Dementia Action Alliance and has been a governor of the local primary school and Hadleigh High School. For many years she volunteered for the Armed Forces’ charity Saafa and the Army Families Federation and has also been a member of the Royal British Legion, organising charity quizzes there.

Charity Race Night On Friday May 3rd at Nayland Village Hall, a Race Night was held to raise funds for ‘WomenVCancer’, a charity which supports the three women’s cancers, Breast Cancer Care, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust.

It was an evening of great fun, with a Fish & Chip supper, bar, and an excellent Prize Draw.

Thanks to the generosity of many local businesses which either sponsored a race, or donated a prize, an amazing amount of £1,505.00 was raised, which will be added to my challenge fund of well over £3,000.00 already raised by my book sales on Hadleigh Market, and sale of my artwork at Craft Sales during the past year.

In November this year, along with a group of like minded women of all ages I will be cycling Coast to Coast Costa Rica, my final of three challenges for the charity, since 2013. We will cycle an average 45 miles daily for 6 days, both on and off road, through dense jungle, past volcanoes and cross rivers in order to reach our final destination. This will be a tough challenge with some testing hilly terrain!

None of this would be possible without the support of family, friends, local businesses and sometimes strangers, so I thank you all very much for your generous donations. Summer is officially here, which means the start of the major tennis tournaments like Queens and Wimbledon. For some of us this is an opportunity to be inspired and to blow the cobwebs off our trusty old racquet and lob a few balls over the net, whereas for others it’s time to settle down with the remote control and sit in front of the tv. However, both of these activities and can lead to their own problems if you are not used to either enthusiastic exercise or prolonged sitting still.

For the occasional athlete, a sudden increase in unaccustomed activity can lead to soft tissue sprains and strains, such as tennis elbow, rotator cuff injuries to the shoulder, and knee ligament and cartilage injuries. We also see patients with calf sprains and twisted ankles, which can be quite debilitating.

Many people don’t realise that we treat all sorts of sports injuries, not just bad backs and necks. Osteopathic evaluation can help to diagnose which tissues have been injured, and we can give advice on how best to manage sprains and strains to facilitate a speedy recovery. Manual therapy such as manipulation and soft tissue techniques can improve the rate of tissue healing, and good rehabilitation exercises can help strengthen and mobiles areas of dysfunction, as well as help to prevent further injury.

For those less keen on playing sport, but happy to spend hours sitting and watching, a stiff neck or low back ache may be the after effects of not being able to tear oneself away from the telly. It’s important to change position on a regular basis, so that joints are stretched and muscles are relieved of being held in one position for too long. Simple measures such as putting the remote control on top of the tv will ensure you have to stand up to change channel, and maybe putting your mobile phone out of reach so you have to get up to answer calls and texts is another way of ensuring you change position from time to time.

Dogs should be fed a biologically appropriate diet Every creature on earth must consume the diet that is biologically most appropriate to eat, otherwise it will get ill and may even die. For the first 4 million years of dogs’ existence on earth they certainly didn’t eat canned food or kibble. Four million years? Yes, that’s how long grey wolves have been around, Wolves (canis lupus), coyotes (canis latrans), and domestic dogs (canis familiaris) are closely-related species. All three can interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring. Through DNA analysis, scientists have established that the wolf is the ancestor of the dog. When wolves were domesticated (around 8,000–20,000 years ago), humans changed their outer appearance and behaviours through breeding, but not their internal organs or digestive systems.

In the wild, dogs eat prey and not much else Dogs are carnivores. True, they can and do eat vegetable matter, but anatomically they are designed to catch, kill and eat prey. As with other predatory mammals, they have powerful muscles relative to their size, fused wrist bones and a cardiovascular system that supports both sprinting and endurance. And a quick look inside their mouth is all it takes to understand why they are really much closer to being carnivores than omnivores. Dogs have five types of teeth, each designed to perform different and precise functions: fang teeth to catch and kill prey and to tear off meat; front teeth to scrape meat off bones; small incisors to grab and hold; large incisors that work like scissors to cut sinews and muscles; and molars to crush bones. None of these teeth, are capable of grinding food. Leave dogs to their own devices and they will eat small birds and beasts (rabbits, mice, squirrels) and a share of larger prey (sheep, deer, boar) If your beloved pet ran off today, he or she would not be found grazing the wheat fields, but chasing the rabbits. What’s more, they would eat the whole animal, including its bones.

Canine digestion is nothing like human digestion Dogs have no digestive enzymes in their saliva (unlike humans) and very large, expandable stomachs, not to mention indescribably strong stomach acids (strong enough to burn your fingers). Their digestive system is designed so that they can tear off chunks of raw meat, crunch up raw bones and swallow the lot whole. The lack of digestive enzymes in their saliva and their inability to move their jaws from side to side (necessary to grinding food) is why they gulp everything down. The entire digestive process takes place in their stomach.

Helping your brain to hear If someone were to ask where hearing happens, what would you say? It seems like a straightforward answer: in your ears. However, what most people don’t realise is that really hearing takes place in the brain.

When you hear a sound, your ears and brain work as a team to interpret it. Your ears pick up the sound waves, but it is your brain that translates them into something that you recognise. The stages are easily explained as locate, recognise, focus and filter: 1. Your brain uses the information from your ears to locate which direction the sound is coming from.

2. Inside your brain, sound waves are translated into sounds that you recognise.

3. While you are listening, your brain enables you to focus in on a conversation.

4. The brain also is able to filter out unwanted background noise.

Why is this important?

When the sound signals from your ears are distorted through hearing loss, your brain must work even harder to fill in the gaps. This extra effort can take its toll; in fact, studies have shown that over time hearing loss can lead to isolation, depression and even dementia.

If you are someone who gets by with hearing loss by depending on one good ear, or by making an extra effort to concentrate on sounds, this is can have an impact on your overall cognitive health. Allowing yourself to hear to your full potential with a hearing aid can take away this strain and allow you to enjoy the rich variety of sounds in everyday life as well as ensure that you are not putting your brain under unnecessary pressure.

How can I make a difference to my hearing health?

Just as we all regularly have our eyes tested, it is recommended that all those over the age of 50 have a hearing assessment every two years to monitor their hearing health. This is such a small commitment, and may not require any further action, yet it will make a great difference in ensuring your overall health and well-being.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk It is sometimes said that we have a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;crisisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in our politics. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s be clear, our world of Westminster is in an extraordinary frenzy over one big issue. But we should never lose sight of the true picture away from the bubble where there is much to be positive about. In particular, the latest figures on jobs would have made many Governments over the years scream with envy.

We now have the lowest unemployment â&#x20AC;&#x201C; just 3.8% of the population - since 1974. This now means that the official count of jobless people has not been lower in my entire lifetime. Since 1974 we have had: a devaluation crisis and seeking support from the IMF to bail out our nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finances; the winter of discontent; deep and dark recessions under Conservative Governments and the biggest of all under Labour in 2008; we have had John Majorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Black Wednesday and Gordon Brownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s credit crunch.

In all those years unemployment has generally been one of the biggest issues facing any Government. And today, amidst what is unquestionably an existential political crisis for my party, we oversee record low joblessness. But in addition, record numbers of women in work; 1 million more disabled people in work since 2010; and youth unemployment down by half a million in the same period. Of course, the job for any Government is to avoid complacency and recognise that, whilst wages are now rising at the fastest rate since the crash, many still feel the pinch. We have also had high profile announcements that major factories are to close in South Suffolk â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Delphi in Sudbury and Philips Avent in Glemsford being the most important examples.

That said, in evidence to the South Suffolk Taskforce that I set up in response to these closures, the most common concern we have heard from local firms has been difficulty in recruiting. We must do everything possible, as we are doing, to attract new investment into these plants and our wider area.

Nevertheless, the statistics I have quoted represent real lives on the up, and we should recognise that there is much to be proud of.

Fidelis Activity News Knickers:- What an array of underwear ladies have been obliged to wear over the centuries from hefty, scratchy, draughty knickers to modern day, almost invisible, thongs. Liza Jones has a wonderful collection which she brought along to our last meeting. Her clear, well researched presentation on the History of Underwear made for a very interesting, entertaining evening. Liza also circulated her many fine examples providing a trip down memory lane for some members. Her fee will benefit East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Ingatestone Hall:-Ingatestone Hall was our venue for a club visit one very cold and windy Saturday. After hundreds of years, many alterations, adjustments and additions it is still the home of the Petre family. Our tour guide, Elizabeth, gave us the background information in each impressive room with its formidable dark paintings, impressive silver collection and often threadbare chairs.

The magnificent building boasts two priest holes, a crenelated tower and some unique glass windows. In view of the sudden drop in temperature the garden visit was reduced to a speedy walk to admire an elaborate pump house, a tree lined walk and some fierce looking Canada Geese standing guard over Inside Ingatestone Hall their new chicks. Although with tour guide Elizabeth this was a private visit, the house is open to the public from Easter to the end of September from noon to 5pm on Wednesday, Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday afternoons. www.ingatestonehall.com

Spring Showcase Just before Easter we held the latest in our series of termly showcases. These events draw together the creative efforts of departments from across the school. This time around saw contributions from Music, Drama, Art, PE, English, MFL and Science as well as guest performances from Hadleigh Community Primary School. As ever, it was great to see students from every year group involved alongside primary students and of course our ever-willing staff.

Our vibrant music ensembles punctuated the evening with a range of music from the classical and popular traditions.

The ensembles which performed were: Singing Club, Orchestra and Flute Choir as well as our student-led ensembles Covers Band and The Rubato Trio. This year's final showcase will be held on Thursday 11th July and tickets will be available from www.ticketor.com/HadleighHighSchool nearer the time.

Festival of Chemistry Four students visited the University of East Anglia in Norwich to attend the ‘Salters Festival of Chemistry’ working in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry. 24 schools attended and the day included practical experiments, problem solving, team building and working with university students to gain an understanding of university life.

The day concluded with a fantastic ‘Kitchen Chemistry’ show by Dr. Stephen Ashworth followed by awards and certificates. The students commented, “We got to have a go at new, interesting science practicals that we wouldn’t usually get to try.

This gave us the chance to see what it is like to be a real chemist and what science is like at a university.”

Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions This term our Duke of Edinburgh students have been busy with their bronze and silver expeditions with over 30 students taking part. The 2 bronze qualifying expeditions took place on the coast near Sizewell and Thorpeness. The silver practice expedition took place in the Peak District near Matlock and the weather was warm and dry.

All three walking groups performed particularly well in their new walking environment with a lot more hills to conquer compared to Suffolk!

Short Story Writing Competition Our Year 10 students were given the opportunity to take part in a writing competition organized by Suffolk One and the University of Suffolk. The challenge was to write a short story of 500 words on the theme of Journeys. The story could be based on an adventure, a journey of growth, a fantasy story or any journey imaginable. Congratulations to the following students: WINNER: The Refugee by Hollie Warner 1ST RUNNER-UP: The Princess by Genevieve Vander Arend 2ND RUNNER-UP: Journey through the Forest by Maddy Damant The winning entry and runners up will be able to read their story at the prestigious University of Suffolk end of year event, as well as receiving Amazon vouchers.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre June brings us to the Stratford Hills Horse Trials on 15th &16th. It mean a lot to us since many of our volunteers help out over the weekend, manning the crossings, stewarding, fence judging and generally doing anything to support the event. The live herd has often lent its stables to visitors for this competition but our ponies don’t actually join in. The course is so attractive and well managed some of the UK’s top riders now bring their young horses to this Horse Trials for their education. The setting is beautiful so its well worth joining us there for a great walk in the country and lots to of entertainment. Our riders are beginning to practise for our Shelley Show at the end of term. As we did last year, we are splitting the two events up: the Dressage competition will be on either 11th or 18th June and the Countryside Challenge and prize giving will be on June 23rd. So much hard work goes in to getting riders, horses and the Centre looking spick and span, I am quite unable to doze off quietly when the yard is so busy. My photo shows Bob having a pre show bath in the interest of looking his competition best.

The summer seems to be packed with activity for everyone. Our fund raising team enjoyed a novel experience packing bags for shoppers in Hadleigh’s Morrisons store on Good Friday. Paul Ballard ran the Manchester marathon on April 7th for us, and Adam Bensusan ran the London marathon on 28th April.

I’d take my hat off to them if I had one. Then the team manned our stall at The Hadleigh Show, and not a drop of cake was left over. Thank you to everyone who supported us at these events.

Time now to add to my list of 30 good reasons for coming up here to join us!

Hadleigh & District Probus Club The object of the Club is ‘To promote fellowship amongst retired and semi-retired professional and business people’. The Club was established in 1998 so last year we celebrated our 20th “birthday”.

We meet for lunch on the third Wednesday of each month at The George, High Street, Hadleigh, where Andy and Jane and all the other staff make us welcome and provide us with excellent meals. We started our year with the Annual Dinner at the Town Hall, a venue that is well placed for most members (and their guests) living in Hadleigh: a successful event with the catering provided by Cheryl Salisbury of Chaplin Catering.

Last August we had a most interesting visit to the museum at RAF Wattisham, including some historic aircraft in an otherwise-redundant hardened shelter. A good lunch was enjoyed afterwards at Chelsworth “Peacock”. The first Wednesday in August is the usual date for the Club’s Ladies Lunch, last year again at the Stoke-by-Nayland, Hotel, Golf & Spa. This year we will be using a different venue, Hintlesham Golf Club, for the event. We had two speakers during the year – Kaye Baker from Gotelee Solicitors gave us an interesting talk this January on the topic of Lasting Power of Attorney, and Peter Matthews, the Town Mayor, joined us for lunch last October.

The number of members in the Club is limited, mostly by the accommodation available for lunch, but we have room for a few more.

Semer Airgun Club Semer airgun club is currently looking for new members. We are an informal air rifle and pistol club and meet every tuesday from 6pm - 8pm at Semer Village Hall. Juniors from the age of nine are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. We have 5 x 10 metre target lanes and 1 x 6 metre pistol lane. During the spring and summer we also shoot outdoors at various knockdown targets and spinners to a range of around 30 metres.

The younger members (and one or two oldies) also enjoy shooting at tin cans.

Club rifles, pistols and pellets are available if you want to give airgun shooting a try. Free tea, coffee and biscuits are also provided.

Dementia Friendly Hadleigh We are looking for great ideas!

Hadleigh is home to many people with dementia and most of us know someone who is affected.

Most people who are caring for a family member with dementia are older people themselves and it is very easy to become isolated, especially if you are not sure how other people might respond.

We have many businesses and several social groups who are signed up to be 'dementia friendly'. This means they have had training to understand something about dementia and how to help.

Challenge fund available The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance is looking for more ideas for how Hadleigh could be an even friendlier place for people living with dementia: • One-off activities or events to make people feel welcome • Ways in which we can spread understanding and awareness • Equipment or resources that would enable better participation in social events • Any original ideas!

As a result of the Charity Ball organised by Stuart Service of The Gables, we have a fund of £3,000 to support some original ideas and are challenging organisations and residents to apply. It is a very simple process (just 4 questions) and a small panel will choose a shortlist to come and talk to us.

It’s been another busy Spring at Kersey, having played host for a 4th year running to the nationally organised Drive It Day on Sunday 28th April. Despite the chilly weather, a far cry from the glorious weather we all enjoyed over the Easter Bank Holiday, there was an impressive turnout of exhibitors. The Friends of Kersey Mill would like to thank all the visitors, volunteers and everyone who contributed towards making the day another success. The proceeds totalled £505, which was divided between Roonagh O Halloran’s Just Giving Fund and The Friends of Kersey Mill. Together with an additional £150 kindly donated by JLS Catering, Roonagh’s family were delighted to receive £405 and thanked everyone for their kind and generous support.

The Suffolk Mills Open weekend on 12-13th May encouraged a good number of visitors to Kersey Mill; it also prompted local Mill enthusiast and author, Patrick Taylor, to visit the site. Patrick was born and brought up in Truro, Cornwall, where he was educated at Truro School and the Architectural Association. His qualifications include an MA in Conservation Studies (York) and a BSc in Mathematics (OU) and he has worked as a Conservation Architect based near Ipswich, Suffolk. Patrick, formerly Heritage Officer at Babergh District Council, has written several books that have been published

by Polystar Press.

His latest, entitled “Drainage Windmills on the Broads”, was inspired by his passion of touring the Norfolk Broads by boat. This book expands upon previous publications by Rex Wailes and Arthur Smith, indeed some of the Mills have been documented as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. Patrick’s guide is set out on a river by river basis for those visiting the Broads by boat. It offers a comprehensive survey of sites where Mills have either been lost or only survive as ruins.

Restoration work continues at Kersey Mill; unfortunately the oak flooring on the first floor had shrunk so the floorboards had to be lifted and closed up which is now complete. We have begun a very exciting summer term. Many children in school are undergoing assessments of one sort or another. As usual we are determined to make sure stress is limited for the children involved. One thing year 6 enjoy is a SATs breakfast which is a chance for the pupils to get into school and have a sociable meal together prior to their tests.

Early Years During the summer term our early year’s children will take the opportunity to make good use of our outdoor classroom and the woods at Kings Pightle. They enjoy a variety of forest schooling activities including; bug hunting and making shelters. They also learn to use lots of skills during this time and have lots of fun – they even take a picnic lunch to the woods! Our early year’s children have even had time to make bread!!!

School Farm & Country Fair On Thursday 25 April, children from Years 3 and 4 went to the School Farm Fair at the Suffolk Showground in Ipswich.

The day allowed the children to experience many different aspects of farming, food production and the countryside with demonstrations and interactive ‘hands on’ exhibits. It also enabled pupils to understand the relationship between the crops grown in the fields to the end products found in the shops.

The cost of the coach was partially funded by Suffolk Agricultural Association and we thank them for their help and support.

Enrichment Dance Workshop Two pupils from Bildeston represented the school at a Dance Workshop at Whatfield Village Hall. This took place on Wednesday 1 May. Representatives from Dance East ran this event and noted the enthusiasm our pupils have for dancing!

Hollow Trees Farm Visit On Friday 3 May 2019, in order to understand where our food comes from and how we can make healthy choices, Goldcrest and Robin class visited Hollow Trees Farm in Semer. They had a fantastic day filled with a range of activities, including planting seeds.

Bradfield Woods Visit Our year 5 pupils visited Bradfield Woods Nature Reserve on two separate days enjoying the facilities they have to offer. These sessions involved learning about the trees and animals of the forest as well as practical bush craft skills.

The Boule-in meets Benton End “We have a very special ‘cultural gathering’ at our Fête d’Été (22nd 30th June)” says Cathy Bullen, proprietor of Bildeston’s delightfully creative French decorative business The Boule-in. “We always pride ourselves on making our events more of a magical experience for our customers rather than merely a shopping trip out - and we search for design-led, à la mode pieces of Photo by Tessa Traeger furniture and collectables when we shop for new stock. This strikes at the heart of the creative life surrounding Benton End, Hadleigh, when its founders Cedric Morris and Arthur Letts-Haines established the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in the 1930s. At the centre of the Modern British Art scene, Cedric Morris’ influence extended into the field of horticulture, becoming an award winning plantsman and an acknowledged influence on Beth Chatto, amongst others.

“It’s absolutely thrilling that Hugh St Clair (already familiar to our Boule-in customers for his stylish fabric designs) is coming to us on Wednesday 26th June, together with some unique Cedric Morris artefacts, to give two short talks before holding a book signing for his recently released publication 'A Lesson in Art and Life'. “says Cathy "Hugh’s book explores the richly creative lives of this amazing couple and all those who were lucky enough to encounter them first hand. It’s incredible that so many of our creative ‘heroes’ visited Benton End - I was aware that both Maggie Hambling and Freud visited, but so too did Vita Sackville West, Benjamin Brittian, Francis Bacon and even Elizabeth David who swapped recipes with Arthur! All are welcome at the Steering Group meetings, which are usually held on the second Monday of the month. It is an opportunity for you to share your views and concerns with other members of the community. The meetings are attended by members of the Town Council, local groups and organisations and a representative from Babergh and Mid Suffolk council. A summary of the meeting held on 13 May 2019, chaired by Sarah Thompson:The report of the meeting in April was approved.

Guest Speaker - Simon Thompson - “Music in and around Hadleigh” Simon spoke about his experience of music as the co-founder of Hadleigh Community Choir. The choir was the idea of Peter Finch and was set up by Peter and Simon in 2012 as an alternative to the Choral Society; something for those who wanted to sing but could not necessarily read music. There must have been a need for it as close to 150 people attended the first meeting in the Town Hall! The choir has gone from strength to strength and is now well known for its variety of music and welcoming atmosphere. Now Simon would like to bring all the music groups in Hadleigh together in the form of a coherent festival in 2020. The Choral Society, Jazz Club, Folk Club, Elmsett Brass Band, Ukulele group, HADS and many more would be supplemented throughout the summer by events such as a musical in a weekend and the complete Gilbert and Sullivan. We would also have events to show music as therapy (like the Dementia Choir). The event will start at the Open Gardens and all events will be found on the Visit Hadleigh website.

Hadleigh Town Council Congratulations were offered to the members of the new Town Council who sit for the first time on Thursday 16 May. Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council Kathryn Grandon was warmly congratulated on winning her Independent seat. The Annual Council meeting is on 22 May when new the committees are formed and roles allocated. The public toilets on Magdalen Rd are in need of urgent repair. The garden area outside Angel Court is in a poor state. Box hedging needs to be saved – it could be removed and stored if it is likely it will be further damaged when building work commences in October. Kathryn will take the matter further.

Hadleigh Legacy Group / Community Garden Together with the gardening club the plants around the town are coming into bloom. Permission is being sought from BDC to put up some low railings to protect some of the planting.

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group The Inactive2Active initiative has secured funding for a further nine months. Locally, the CCG has introduced a Living Life to the Full programme. These are a range of online services aimed at anyone who suffers loneliness and isolation. The Hadleigh Connector Scheme run by SCC & Suffolk Family Carers is running a bus around various towns which visits Hadleigh Pool & Leisure on 29 May and again on 26 June Visit Hadleigh A video will be made during the Hadleigh Show, Open Gardens and the Duck and Raft Race to be used for future promotion of the events. The pictorial map is proving a big success. There are some notable omissions, especially the Row Chapel, and future prints will look to address this. Hanging baskets are going up and the pop up visitor booth will be at the Bus station for the Hidden Gardens on the 8th June.

Tidy Town Litter picks are on a Monday and Friday morning and Sunday afternoon. The team are planning to wash street signs and pull up weeds in public areas, requests and offers of help to ourtidytown@gmail.com Hadleigh On Show Sat 5 October in the Guildhall Complex. An estimated 50 tables for groups and activities based in Hadleigh will be there which is very pleasing. Closing date for applications for tables (£5 donation per table required) is 31 July. He initially posed this idea on Facebook; the result was 159 comments of support from the community and airing their good experiences.

Layham Playgroup CIO We have been very busy the fields around playgroup getting ready for summer and the cows returning to the field next to playgroup. We have been studying farms and farming within our play and stories.

We have also been busy in our garden planting bulbs and seeds, which are now starting to grow.

We are holding an Open Day on Monday 17th June 10 -12. It will be an opportunity for you to come and have a look at Layham Playgroup for yourself.

The children will be able to join in the activities, whilst you will have the chance to meet our staff. London Marathon Fundraising in Aid of Dementia On Sunday 28th April Stuart Service and James Hellyer ran the London Marathon in aid of Dementia UK. It was James’ first marathon and he finished in a very respectable 4:34:48 and Stuart’s third marathon which he ran in a personal best of 3:58:47. It marks the end of months of training and fundraising, which has seen Stuart and James raise over £10,000 in aid of Dementia. An Anecdote - Whatfield 1946 Four of us village boys’ football boots needed their studs replaced so off we went to Mr Silas Avis’ workshop on the corner of Church Lane, Whatfield. Mr Avis was the village cobbler, we knocked and entered and made our request.

“Yes I can do them for you but you’d better be quiet as the boat race is about to begin”. He had a wireless set so all us boys sat on the floor and listened to Mr John Snagge with his crisp deep bass voice commentating on Oxford v Cambridge. Oxford won. Happy days.

Hadleigh Community Primary School Key Stage 1 Year One were treated to a talk by Mr Warrillow about nursing, they have been learning about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole and finding out how nursing has changed over the years. The topic was introduced by shocking pictures of our medical room; it was extremely messy, the sheets were covered in stains and there was mud all over the floor. The children discussed what needed to be done to sort it out, they knew that the dirt could house germs which might make them ill. They were surprised to hear that when Florence Nightingale arrived at Scutari Hospital it was in a similar state. The children found out how Florence Nightingale changed things and conditions for the soldiers improved. Mr Warrillow, who works as a community nurse for Lloyds Pharmacy Clinical Homecare, was able to show pupils some of the equipment he uses on a regular basis and discuss how it is very different to the equipment Florence Nightingale or Mary Seacole would have had access to.

Year Two children have entered a fabulous display for the Hadleigh Show this year. At the time of writing it is sitting in the North Lobby waiting to make it's way to the Schools Tent at the Show. All three Year Two classes worked together to create the display showing the production of honey from the hives, to the factory and then to the plate. It is a wonderfully creative and interactive display which has engaged and educated the children.

Sport On Friday 3rd May 2019, our KS1 and KS2 Gymnastics teams took part in the Key Steps Gymnastics competition at Westbourne Academy. There were 11 schools that had entered the KS1 competition, and 12 schools that had entered the KS2 competition. All teams that entered into the KS1 event had to perform 2 different elements, a floor exercise routine and a vault. All teams that entered the KS2 event had to perform 3 different elements, a body management routine, a floor exercise routine and a vault.

After an excellent performance in all of their elements by both teams, our KS1 squad finished 3rd overall and our KS2 team finished 2nd overall which was a huge success. This meant that both our KS1 and KS2 team progress to the county finals, which take place on June 7th at Gainsborough Sports Centre.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday May 13th 2019: Selecting clematis for the garden can be a problem - there are just too many to choose from - there are clematis for sun or shade, in all colours and sizes, of different habits and they needing pruning in different ways, but with the help of Martin Gibbison, our speaker for May, this was all made much easier. The viticella types are tough, they are not prone to mildew and pruning is easy - cut down to thirty centimetres and they will flower again.

For scent he recommended tritonata - with a perfume of sweet almonds and with tiny star shaped flowers, certain types can even be used as ground cover.

He showed us how simple it is to take cuttings with a practical demonstration and advised on cultivation. Plant them only deep enough to cover the lower buds for protection, after planting cut off any flowers to encourage root growth and feed with tomato food and after planting put down a mulch. However be warned - as we discovered some can grow to as much as 50 metres so do your homework!

Monday June 10th 2019: This is a busy month for us with plenty on offer. The club is visiting Peter Beales roses at Attleborough on Monday 10th June. Plus two dates for your diary - Hadleigh Hidden Gardens - Saturday June 8th, make sure you visit the garden of club member Gale Pryor at Toppesfield Mill House, Tinkers Lane as she has kindly invited us there, so as well as seeing this beautiful garden, at the same time you will be able to find out more about the club. Sue Mordey who is also a member of the club is opening her garden, Hillside, Union Hill Semer for the first time this year under the National Open Garden Scheme. When the new seat was installed in the Market Place it was felt that more colour should be added to the area.

We had already provided a container and plants round the Town Sign and flowers round the tree. Unfortunately the idea of a Dyer's Garden similar to one in Lavenham was not a success as the plants are not very colourful and some are now considered weeds!

We are most grateful to Christine Sturman for volunteering to create a new garden which would give interest and colour through the year. With the help of members of Hadleigh Gardening Club and friends the bed has now undergone a transformation. Thanks are due to them for all their hard work, Hadleigh Town Council for providing funds from the environment budget and local gardeners for donating plants. Following the recent rain the plants are all looking well and we hope they will provide an attraction for residents and visitors for years to come.

Flowton Open Gardens The tiny village of Flowton - in the middle of nowhere but close to Hadleigh, Ipswich and Needham Market - is opening its gardens for the first time in four years on 22 and 23 June. As well as a dozen very different gardens to visit, Flowton's delightful 13th century church will host a colourful Flower Festival on the theme of Nursery Rhymes. There will also be exciting displays of military vehicles and vintage tractors, a local history exhibition and even a chance to see how eggs are produced and packed! What's more, refreshments, lunches and cream teas will be available throughout the weekend at St Mary’s Church.

Proceeds will go to help maintain St Mary's Church, Flowton, and to FIND (Families in Need), the Ipswich food and furniture bank which provides crucial support to many local families and individuals in need. The Flower Festival and church will be open from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June. Gardens will be open from 12.00 to 5.00. Flowton (IP8 4LG) is signposted from the A1071 (Hadleigh, Hintlesham, Ipswich) and there is easy access from Junction 54 on the A14 (Sproughton exit).

Down to Earth ...with Dave When we moved to our new house the previous owners left behind in the garden a large heavy concrete bird bath partly hidden under some bushes, also a very large terracotta Ali Baba type urn. The bird bath was soon cleaned up and in use by the birds, the large urn was not so easy to find a use for, as over the years it had become very dirty and stained. We tried it in various places but it never quite fitted in. Now with the new area of gravel this seemed to be the ideal place for it. After much cleaning, including the careful use of a pressure washer, the now pristine urn has been given pride of place in the middle of the gravel. It has been planted up with a small conifer in the middle and several trailing white flowers around the edge, some colour is provided by pansies. The whole arrangement is in a container so it can be replaced as required. It really has become a focal point, just goes to show that everything eventually has a use.

With the much welcome rain it is now time to get on with the various planting out on the allotment. The greenhouse raised sweetcorn plants can be planted out into the fenced off area, they are planted in a square rather than rows to aid with pollination. Other plants to go out will be sunflowers, french beans, courgettes, squash and dahlias, hopefully we won't get any more frost. Some gaps have appeared in the directly sown spinach and chard, these can just be reseeded - the new sowings will soon catch up, they will all need thinning out as soon as they are at a manageable size. Regularly earth up potatoes.

If you have any over wintered fuchsias that seem dead don't give up on them just yet as they may well still be alive, just be patient a bit longer. Keep picking rhubarb and asparagus as the more you pick the more they grow. Why is it that weeds grow so quick after rain? The best tool at the momemt is the hoe. Keep an eye out for pests such as the bright red lily beetle, if not picked off and destroyed the the nasty grubs they produce will soon devastate the green leaves. There is a lot of debate about the use of slug pellets at the moment.

The use of metaldehyde in slug pellets is to be banned from spring 2020.

DEFRA say that it poses an unacceptable risk to birds and mammals. The ban will stop farmers and commercial growers from creating widespread pollution of rivers and fresh waters with these toxic pellets. I still prefer to pick up slugs etc. by hand and dispose of them in a pot of salty water.

Chelsworth Open Gardens Its that time of year again and the residents of Chelsworth are busy preparing for our famous Open Gardens Day on Sunday June 30th 11am until 5pm. We are only a tiny village but our Open Gardens Day punches well above its weight with over 20 gardens open - all within a short stroll from one another.

Its a real community effort with almost every resident involved in one way or another. Teas and light refreshments (including lots of cake) will be available in 3 or 4 of the gardens and we also have a very welcoming pub. There will be some idyllic places to picnic - maybe alongside the river Brett; and some lovely places for a walk, including our community woodland. There will also be plant and craft stalls, and other displays and entertainments.

The gardens vary from huge and formal to tiny cottage plots, including water gardens, walled gardens and butterfly meadows. There are tall stately delphiniums and hollyhocks, roses, wild flowers and vegetable plots. All set against a tranquil backdrop of ancient timbered houses. Add all this to the beauty of the village itself with its picturesque river, and ancient bridge and you have the makings of a great family day out. Parking is free and entry to the event is by programme which can be bought in the car parks. Adults £6, children free.

News from Whatfield CEVCP School Our school is always busy, but in the summer we even more activities to fit into the educational schedule. We have lots of exciting events planned for this term, including our annual sports week and a range of educational visits to the forest, the beach and to the museum of East Anglian Daily Life. We also look forward to preparing and supporting our pupils for assessments and transition on to their different High Schools.

We were very proud that one of our students won a family ticket to the Hadleigh Show for his programme cover design, and that his artwork was on display in the education tent. Our pupils worked hard to produce artwork for the education tent - one of which displays produce grown in Suffolk.

Key Stage 2 children studied Andy Warhol and produced their own print blocks using bright colours for the 3D exhibit. Hopefully all the visitors enjoyed the hard work that had gone in to all stages of the show.

Pupils in year 3, 4 and 5 attended the School’s food farm fair at Trinity Park on Thursday 25th April. They were able to enjoy meeting farm animals and see how local fruit and vegetables are sourced. Children in our Acorns class then continued their work by helping Mr Plumbly sow seeds at our school allotment and looking at what produce and ingredients make up a yummy roast dinner. Mr Golding also helped children plant out seedlings in our lovely EYFS area, and they were very pleased to see the growth they have made.

Mrs Blackwell was pleased to borrow an apple press from the community orchard near her village, and the children in Acorn class thoroughly enjoyed some tasty apple juice from their hard work. They have also been studying earthworms and the worms in their wormery - the great compost and plant food they have made will help us with growing our plants. The ducklings were great fun, but have grown fast enough to need their new home now, and are enjoying life in their large pond.

As you know we work hard at sport, and are incredibly proud to announce that in May pupils represented Whatfield School at a gymnastics competition at Whitton Sports Centre. They did amazingly well, achieving 2nd and 4th places in both the under 7s and under 9s. We have now qualified for regional finals which take place in June, good luck Whatfield CEVCP School! One of our pupils entered a national majorette competition recently and we are very pleased to announce that she was placed 3rd overall in her solo performance, and is now a national champion! She kindly brought her trophy into school to share with us all.

Although he had plenty to say about dogs last month, I can forgive the little upstart as he mentioned the sad fact that black and black/white cats are often overlooked. Even sadder are Betty, a black cat and a pretty tabby and white called Fat Cat. Please don’t be put off, she does not have a weight problem. They came in last May when their owner died and need a quiet adult-only home as they are very timid. Can you offer them the love and time they deserve, maybe a new name too?

The Sanctuary should be looking spruce if the new paths are finished, ready for our Open Day next month. Meanwhile, we are holding a £1 at Newton Green Village Hall, School Lane, CO10 0QS on Saturday 15th June.

With pride; don’t hide Taboo: forbidden, prohibited, impermissible, banned, ruled out, frowned on, restricted – goodness, these are all rather strong words, aren’t they? You would think someone had done something really quite terrible to illicit this kind of terminology and yet, somehow, something that is as natural as the sun rising has been, and often still is, a taboo topic. Along with many other people and organisations, Suffolk Libraries is proud to be part of a growing movement to tackle the awful situation of period poverty and also the stigma that can be connected to the subject itself. As if it wasn’t bad enough to see a rise in food bank use, it has come to light of late that many women and girls are unable to afford basic sanitary items. Because for so many years we have been reticent to openly discuss the matter as a public norm, there have been very negative effects; from missed school and work days to quite frankly dangerous and unhygienic home substitutes.

We should all feel a little embarrassed; not because of talking about periods but because we haven’t been doing so in a grown-up and sensible manner.

Times though, they are changing; as well they should be, else we’d all still believe that the sun moves around the earth and that an exposed ankle was the height of indecency.

Hadleigh Library has become one of many within Suffolk Libraries who now have a selection of sanitary items that can be discretely - or as openly as you would like! given to those who are in need. It is a no-questions-asked service where anyone can (themselves or on behalf of another) pick up a form from within the library showing what they need and hand it to a member of staff who will fulfil it to the best they can. We have been lucky to be supplied with some items from supporting organisations: East of England Co-op, Pink Parcel and Bloody Good period, but if you would like to help by donating, please do talk to a member of staff. Hadleigh Town Council Report of the meeting of Hadleigh Town Council held on the 21st March 2019 Present: Councillors: Matthews (Chair), Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haylock, Knock, Loftus, Monks, Schleip, Sheldrick, and Wiltshire. In attendance: Babergh District Councillors: Dr. Dawson and Grandon and 20 members of the public.

APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors Haines and Fraser due to personal reasons. This apology was accepted.

DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST AND REQUEST FOR DISPENSATION There were no declarations of interest.

MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 21st February 2019, a copy of which is included in the Minute Book, were confirmed as a correct record and signed. There was an objection raised to the wording of the public adjournment and a request that reference to Councillors Knock and Wiltshire be removed or be minuted in full to include that they were laughing during the meeting.

The Clerk advised that the minute could not be added to as it was part of the public adjournment so only what the topic of what the members of the public speak on is noted and not fully minuted. Councillor Knock proposed that this be removed from the minutes. Voting was: 3 for and 9 against.

The proposal was not accepted.

MATTERS ARISING Minute No: 211 – Standing Order No. 21 Councillor Byrne advised that in the minutes there is a long section from Mr. Shearly-Sanders regarding the Hadleigh Market Feoffment. A number of statements are incorrect and as it is a record of what he said it would be wrong for his comments to appear as facts and I therefore bring forward corrections under matters arising.

I wish to draw attention to his statement that ‘The Charity is supposed to generate income for distribution for general charitable purposes in Hadleigh not to receive subsidies to cover its losses from Hadleigh taxpayers through the Council. The Charity was not formed to generate income for distribution for ‘general charitable purposes or to distribute money’. The Charity was formed in the late 1300’s by a number of Chieffe Citizens to firstly to rent and then purchase the market area all of its properties and acquire the Charter to run the market and hence run the town.

In their almost 600 years and with access to many of their account books there is no evidence of their giving money or charitable goods to the towns residents.

Except for a short period in the 20 century the Town has been run/managed from the Market house and the income from the market and properties has had many varied uses. The Feoffment came under the control of the Charity Commission in the 1850s. The Scheme under which it is now ruled states:23. Expenses of management. The Trustees shall first defray out of the income of the Charity the cost of repairs and insurance and all other charges and outgoing payable in respect of the property of the Charity and all the proper costs, charges and expense of and incidental to the administration and management of the Charity.

25. Subject to the payments aforesaid the Trustees shall apply the income of the Charity as they think fit for any charitable purposes of the general benefit of the inhabitants of the Town of Hadleigh.

The Charity Commission is quite clear that the provision of rooms for Public use is for the ‘general benefit of the inhabitants. Over the centuries apart from providing room for specific activities such as free schools it has always provided rooms for general public use which included the public raising funds for the New Town Hall and although all of the land and properties that provided an income to support the building have long since been sold the HMFC continues to provide rooms for public use and the Town Council carries out its duties as the Trustee.

Councillor Angland agreed with Councillor Byrne regarding the inaccuracies stated and drew attention to the grant made to the Charity. It states quite clearly in the Town Council’s budget statement that the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity can apply for the excess left at the end of the year after other groups have applied.

Matters Arising – Minute 183 – Minutes No: 165 and 166 Councillor Knock questioned the Mayor who stated his actions in reinstating the minutes had been verified by various bodies. He felt that only SALC had been spoken to so he had spoken to SALC himself and they denied this. The Acting Proper Officer reported that she had seen the e.mail from Councillor Knock to SALC who had confirmed that she had spoken with them and the adjournment was lawful. Councillor Knock said he was just asking a hypothetical question and she should re-read the e.mail again.

Minute No: 216 – Finance & Personnel Committee The Clerk reported that she and Councillor Monks had met with a partner of Gotelee & Goldsmiths. They were provided with a number of documents pertaining to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. It was agreed that the questions and the documents would be taken away but that it would be best to wait for the lease to be received from the Charity as this would provide more information. Once the lease is received a copy will be sent to Gotelee & Goldsmiths and a response to the questions should be forthcoming.

The Clerk also reported that the Skate Park Leeder Fund Application had been signed and submitted.

Minute No: 211 – Standing Order No. 21 Councillor Wiltshire asked why Mr. Shearly-Sanders questions regarding the Mayor line managing the Clerk had not been written out in full. She was advised that this was due to the information relating to staff and he had been asked to stop reading his communication.

At this point the meeting was adjourned for members of the public to speak and a gentleman clarified his statement made regarding the two Councillors named.

had been received from Babergh District Councillors: Campbell, Dr. Dawson and Grandon. Apologies had been tendered by Councillor Campbell.

A request was made to Councillor Grandon to ask Babergh District Council to provide more notice of their Planning Meetings where they relate to Hadleigh in order that a representative of the Council can attend.

Councillor Dr. Dawson spoke on the Babergh District Council Planning Meeting to be held on Monday 25th March to discuss the Corks Lane Planning Applications and advised residents to attend. She thanked all those who attended the Benton End Meeting in St. Mary’s Church.

As a small business owner in the town, Councillor Haylock, wished to thank Babergh District Council for the business rate relief for which they were grateful.

Councillor Wiltshire raised Dr. Dawson’s offer in her February report to assist Hadleigh Town Council with the cemetery extension. Dr. Dawson wished to make it clear that it was not within her remit to do anything unless invited by the Council.

Her offer had been discussed at the February meeting where it was felt that any assistance was not required.

227. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor advised that he was in receipt of Mr. Shearly-Sanders resignation letter.

The Mayor reported that he had recently met with a Major from Wattisham who advised him that they are hoping to put on an event in May 2020 celebrating 25 years of the hangers being opened by Prince Philip. The Major has approached Hadleigh Town Council to see if the event could run along the similar lines to those that were followed for the Bond of Friendship in 2009. This involved Hadleigh Town Council hosting the event – the soldiers from Wattisham marching through the town – a reception being held in the Town Hall. Myself and the Acting Proper Officer could see no reason that the Town Council being voted into office in May would not want to work with the staff at Wattisham to ensure that this event goes ahead.

Therefore the Town Hall has been provisionally booked for the weekend in May. The Town Council should meet this cost and provide refreshments which will be arranged and the Town Council should make a budget bid to fund this event when the budget for 2020 is being discussed. I wanted to report this this evening so that the information is minuted and can be referenced by the newly elected Council who members from Wattisham will be liaising with.

The Mayor reported an e.mail received from a resident reporting the damage that had occurred to her property on Benton Street. He would be passing the information to Suffolk County Councillor Fraser.

STANDING ORDER NO. 21 Councillor Schleip asked: New Lease. Being a Feoffee of the Charity will the Mayor please explain why he opposes the Council considering its accommodation requirements before the Council hears from the Guildhall Charity? Is the Mayor personally trying to withhold or delay the Charity’s intended proposals from the Council? Please confirm that the Mayor will circulate to all Councillors the proposed Heads of Terms for the lease it would like the Council to enter into in order that the Council is not ambushed by the Charity, hindered from taking independent advice and otherwise freely negotiating the commercial terms for a lease in the best interests of the Council.

Will the Mayor please ensure that the Feoffees do not impose on the newly elected Council a new lease from the Charity before the new Council takes office? The Mayor felt that this question should be addressed to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity and would be fully answered when the lease from the Charity had been provided.

Councillor Wiltshire advised that she had not received an answer to her questions raised at the last meeting. The Clerk advised that the envelope she had been provided with at the beginning of the meeting contained the answers.

Councillor Wiltshire asked if the Mayor could give guidance on what to do when a motion is put in a meeting without giving seven days’ notice and it then is voted through by the majority does this follow Standing Order 71. Could the Mayor and Acting Proper Officer advise the correct procedure? They advised this information could not be provided at this point.

Councillor Knock again questioned the Finance & Personnel interview process in relation to the appointment of the new Services Officer.

The Chair of the Finance & Personnel Committee felt that the Committee were constantly being undermined in questioning the work carried out correctly and that it was insulting to question the Services Officer’s employment and felt this was completely out of order. The employment of the Services Officer had been carried out correctly. All Councillors had been advised that interview papers were available to view in the office after the interviews had taken place – no Councillors took up the offer. It was also noted that the newly appointed Services Officer had not been made to feel welcome at the first meeting he attended.

Councillor Knock asked when the Mayor will answer his question regarding his non-declaration of a pecuniary interest. The Clerk advised that an interest can only be declared on an item on the Agenda. The legal requirement is that Councillors Register of Interest Forms is correct. The Mayor confirmed that his form is up to date. The Clerk advised that it is not up to another Councillor to say when a fellow Councillor should declare an interest.

Councillor Knock advised that he had been contacted by a local company regarding a replacement boiler at Cemetery Lodge and had been advised that the Mayor had said ‘don’t bother as it is all sorted’. The Clerk advised that this was hearsay and the Mayor was not obliged to answer. The Mayor did respond and advised that three companies had been contacted to quote for the replacement boiler, two had arrived to quote for the work, one had said they were not interested as could not do the job until May and the other had submitted a quotation which was held by the Council.

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £30,215.73 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries, details of which are listed in the Schedule contained in the Minute Book, be approved for payment. Questions were raised regarding payments to the staff, Gill Associates

and the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. Councillor Byrne proposed and Councillor Cook seconded the accounts. Voting was 9 for and 3 against.

RECONCILIATION OF ACCOUNTS The Clerk advised that this is a new requirement set out in the Financial Regulations. The Bank Statement and reconciliation have to be signed by a Councillor, other than a cheque signatory.

Councillor Cook agreed to visit the office and sign the documents.

CIL STATEMENTS Councillors were in receipt of the CIL statements for 2017/18 and 2018/19 as prepared by the RFO. These were agreed and were signed by the Chair and Acting Proper Officer for submission to Babergh District Council.

PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 7th March 2019, a copy of which is included in the Minute Book, were noted.

Councillor Cook thanked Councillor Haines for circulating the Neighbourhood Plan Report but had to point out that one point was incorrect and did not want this to go out into the public domain. The Hadleigh and Boxford Practices have not closed their lists if you live within the catchment area. If you apply and live outside the catchment area the list is now closed.

SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 14th March 2019, a copy of which is included in the Minute Book, was received and accepted including the recommendations to: i) Review the Layham Road Sports Ground Management Committee constitution ii) A request for scattering of ashes and erection of a memorial stone in the old cemetery iii) Councillor Schleip and the Services Officer to visit Hintlesham sport facility to obtain information on light token machines. iv) A five year contract with ETC sports for maintenance of the tennis courts.

Councillor Haylock asked if she was correct in saying that all the time she had been on the Council Layham Road Sports Ground has been subsidised by the Council? She was advised that she was correct as the Management Committee had insufficient funds to maintain the sports facilities at Layham Road.

CEMETERY EXTENSION The Mayor reported that following the Town Council meeting in February 2019 he had received confirmation that the tender is robust and, as agreed, the tender documents have now been signed and work will commence in April. He asked if he had Council’s agreement to provide information to the public via a press release? No objections were made to this request. There were a number of questions raised regarding the cemetery extension but it was felt that these had been dealt with in the past. There was a round of applause when it was pointed out that it was extremely sad that Hadleigh Town Council had recognised years ago to plan early for an extension to the current cemetery, it is one of the cheapest burial grounds in the area, and the extension is going ahead at no extra cost on the precept which had not gone up for three years due to the good financial management of the Town Clerk and yet all that happens is niggle, niggle niggle.

She proposed to move on.

Voting was 9 for and 3 against.

ELECTIONS It was reported that at the 2015 election a booklet and an open day had been arranged. The booklet would still be in the office and with minor adjustments could be revamped if anyone should want a copy. It was felt that this was a good idea but the elections should have been discussed a lot earlier. The Clerk pointed out that a request to have this as an agenda item had not been put forward and an opportunity had been missed.

SUFFOLK PRESERVATION SOCIETY Councillors Wiltshire and Schleip had attended a Heritage Training event and provided Council with the notes that had been handed out. It highlighted that special regard to Listed Buildings is not always considered when planning applications are made. It was suggested that Heritage Planning training should be considered by the new Council. It was considered a positive step that the Local List was now being worked on.

THIS COUNCIL AGREES TO INSTRUCT AN INDEPENDENT BODY TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS OF BULLYING WITHIN HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL This item had been requested by Councillor Knock and he was asked to put forward specific allegations as none had been lodged with the office or the Mayor.

He did not bring forward specific allegations but advised on comments he had been told had been made at a recent Steering Group Meeting. The Clerk advised that he had not attended the meeting and was bringing hearsay to the meeting but could confirm that she was at the Steering Group meeting and reference was made to recent press releases and general bullying, not anything specific and Councillor Haylock agreed. Councillor Knock proposed that Hadleigh Town Council instruct an independent body to investigate bullying allegations. This was seconded by Councillor Wiltshire.

Voting was 3 for and 9 against.

The proposal was not passed.

It was recommended that the new Council should be aware and an up to date policy be in place on bullying and harassment. The Clerk reported that she had been in discussion with SALC and it was hoped that the CEO would attend the meeting on the 16th May to work with the new Council.

REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Haylock reported that she had attended a wool town meeting and would be starting the recruitment process for staff.

TOWN MATTERS The Acting Proper Officer reported: i) Hadleigh Hares Athletic Club will be holding the 10 and 5 mile race on Sunday 17th November starting at 11am. . Race Headquarters will be at Hadleigh United Football Club. ii) Traffic arrangements for this year’s May Show as Duke Street will be closed from 6am to 6pm on the day of the Show and there is a new vehicular access running from Coram Street – coming in at the top of Holbecks Park.

It was acknowledged that the £250 left in a residents will had been passed to the organisers of the hanging baskets and what a lovely gesture this was to have been made.

It was reported that the garden area at the rear of the Market Place had been cleared and was ready for replanting. The work would be carried out by volunteers and anyone was welcome to assist.

It was reported that there would be no Art Exhibition held in St. Mary’s Church this year instead a textile exhibition is to be held in St. Mary’s Church. Also on show will be the church vestments which are not seen very often.

Councillor Monks advised that following advice from SALC she wished to notify Council that she had resigned from the Labour Party so will serve the rest of her term of office as an Independent.

Babergh District Council is holding their Planning Committee Meeting on Monday 25th March in the Town Hall Complex and will be discussing the Corks Lane Planning Applications. Councillor Angland, Vice-Chair of the Planning Committee, will be representing Hadleigh Town Council.

Layham Road Sports Ground, 17th April 2019 It has always been the intention of Hadleigh Town Council to upgrade or rebuild the pavilion at Layham Road Sports Ground. To this end a forward-thinking Councillor set up a sinking fun which currently stands at £60,000. After discussions with clubs and users, proposals were drawn up and drawings provided for consideration. After some changes to suit all users these drawings were finalised and submitted with a planning application to Babergh District Council. Further detailed drawings were requested and these have been provided and the planning applications is awaiting consideration. It is difficult to obtain grants until a planning application is approved but so far approaches have been made to Sport England and for CIL monies which have been unsuccessful at this time. As well as seeking grants it is possible to apply for a Public Works Loan each year. It has been advised previously that a full quantity survey has to be carried out to obtain a clearer price guide for this rebuild.

Rebuild costs in 2017 were estimated in the region of £1,500-£2,000 psqm. The total area for this rebuild is estimated at 245 sqm. This is only a general guide and not site specific, if a more detailed price is required our Architects have said they could discuss with a Quantity Surveyor and potentially assist with an initial cost plan. Planning approval, discussions on future management of the pavilion, funding etc. are ongoing regarding this project.

Update on the Layham Road Sports Ground proposed new pavilion, 10th May 2019 Babergh District Council, as the Local Planning Authority, has given notice that Planning Permission has been granted in accordance with the application particulars. Application reference DC/19/01329.

Annual Parish Meeting The Annual Parish Meeting is called by the Parish Council Chairman each spring to review the life of the village over the previous year. It is not a Parish Council meeting but a general Parish meeting. District Council elections 2019 - Brett Vale The election of 2 May resulted in the following votes cast: Philippa Draper (G) 211, Stephen Laing (Ind) 314, John Ward (C), 458, Stephen Williamson (Ind) 44. 40% turnout, thus John Ward has been re-elected to represent our interests at Babergh District Council for the next four years.

Swans What a delight it is to walk round past the mill and come upon a swan sitting firmly on its clutch of eggs not a couple of metres from the railings. The cob and the pen seem to take turns in keeping the eggs warm (I am told there are five) and they seem to accept our curiosity. Whilst you are standing there the chances are that you will also see one or both of the grey wagtails that nest around the mill every year. How lucky we are to live in such an environment.

Frogs and toads crossing Stoke Road Well done the public spirited person who has warned us road users to watch out for frogs and toads crossing Stoke Road as they pass backwards and forwards between Moat Hall lake and the wider world.

The roadside notice says: Please note multiple toads and frogs use this lane as a regular crossing point.

They are especially likely to cross on mild damp nights. Over the past 30 years the toad population has decreased by 68%. Drive with care and perhaps even move them out of the way. Please care for our frogs and toads.

Layham Playing Field Two welcome additions have been made to our playing field over the past month.

First – the final gate has been placed in the hedge line between the playing field and the nature conservation area. Thank you once again to our stalwart helpers – Colin Brown, Ron Gunn, John McLeod and George Wyatt. Shortly, notices will be posted on the gates, putting some restrictions on the use of this wild area as we continue to develop an environment primarily for wild life.

Secondly, a small high quality piece of play apparatus has been installed for use by younger children. This was funded by money available to our village through the tax placed on developers when they build new houses in the village. The photograph shows two young men from the company that supplied the apparatus, working on the installation.

From the parish archive Our appeal last month for information on men and women who served in uniform organisations during WW2 brought two valuable responses which will be shared with you eventually. Festival Legacy A further legacy of the Festival of Gardening and Art 2017 is now in situ in the town centre near the main bus stops behind the Coop. It took a while but organisers, Jane Haylock, Jane Snowdon and Jan Devey feel the wait has been worthwhile.

The three engraved slate plaques mark the Community Gardens which have been lovingly maintained, since the Festival, by Jane Snowdon and a few loyal volunteers. The general flower beds and the specialist ‘iris’ beds are a tribute to plantsman and artist Cedric Morris who spent many happy years at Benton End growing and developing new irises as well as overseeing the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at the same venue. The plaques were financed by the Festival’s Legacy Fund and carefully placed by builder Steve Chisnall and his team. JD

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 52 (June – July 2019) To mark the 80th anniversary of the start of the Second World War (1939-1945), The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian Roger Kennell will be launching his new Issue 52 June - July 2019 Price £4 booklet Hadleigh During World War II: The Home Front Story’ at St Mary’s church on 20th July, when there will be an accompanying exhibition. Roger has spent many hours researching Hadleigh Urban District Council’s records and other documents to find out just what it was like during wartime when the town was full of evacuees and the military. He has kindly written a short piece for the magazine about preparations to keep inhabitants safe and the large magazine at Aldham Mill Hill known as ‘The Features in this issue: Dump’, which was not demolished until twenty years ago. As the intension of The Hadleigh Historian is not only to investigate the history of the town but also the surrounding countryside, included in this issue is the story of Layham Watermill.

The village is fortunate in having a local history group, currently under the guidance of Mike Woods, which has set up and catalogued an archive of both original and copied documents, some of which I was allowed to borrow. I was also assisted by Christine Coe of Chattisham who shared her family-history research concerning Freeman Hitchcock, owner during the 19th century for 37 years. ‘When Hadleigh was a borough 400 years ago’ continues with the rules and regulations under which the weekly market and two annual fairs were held. These were times when the town was crowded and criminals were placed in the stocks to increase their humiliation.

‘Shops in High Street’ looks at Nos. 61 to 63, now Tatty Broyds and Hadleigh Post Office respectively but do you remember the building on the site before the present shops were erected in 1967? At one time, hairdresser Edgar Bulmer was there, living over the premises with his wife and six children. On another occasion, Joseph Byrne’s shop was described as ‘an establishment where items in the cycle, radio, television and electrical lines were mended while you waited or came back to you working better than ever’. The series ‘The Hardacres of Hadleigh’ comes to an end by looking at the fourth generation, who ran a comprehensive business as booksellers, newsagents and printers in the very building where Hadleigh Community News is produced. Altogether three generations of the family enriched the religious and cultural life of Hadleigh with their music.

Local resident Sarah Dooley entered a Facebook competition organised by the award-winning home improvement firm and was selected at random as the winner. Unfortunately, Sarah saw the Tractor Boys lose the Sky Bet Championship game 0-2, but nevertheless, she enjoyed her visit, having picked up the tickets with her dad Barry from SEH BACâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ipswich showroom.

The Hadleigh Golf Society (HGS) Now that the Winter is over, golfers are looking forward to striding the fairways again in warmer conditions. It seems that many local golfers are unaware of the HGS which has been in existence for many years. The Society arrange 9 outings a year starting in early January (a Christmas meeting at Hintlesham GC) and monthly thereafter, through to October, but missing out February.

The venues are mainly in Suffolk, but sometimes stray into North Essex.

Currently the Society has on average of 30 playing members but meetings are usually attended by between 18 and 24 very friendly men and women who would be very welcoming. So, if you have an official club handicap and would like to be invited to a meeting with a view to joining, please contact the Society’s Secretary, Barbara Jones by email. Art of the Needle Exhibition St Mary's Church Hadleigh were delighted to host the Art of the Needle Exhibition in May organised by Jane Haylock of The Idler with contributions from textile artists from two groups the Textile Art Group Suffolk and Beyond Stitch. The exquisite work by the artists was much appreciated by the many visitors who attended.

In the South Chapel Revd Canon David Atkins exhibited his collection of church vestments together with items from Shelley and Layham churches and he was on hand to pass on his expert knowledge regarding their significance as was his wife Wendy to talk about the beautiful textile art she was exhibiting.

The exhibition was a huge success in raising funds to help with the restoration of the church building of St Marys. Fr Jo Delfgou, the Church Wardens and the Art Exhibition Committee at St Mary's would like to thank all participants for their hard work.

The D.I.Y. Deli Smoked Ham Hock Terrine The hock or knuckle of pork is widely thought of as an inferior cut but taken from a smoked ham it offers outstanding flavour. This favourite of high end restaurants is seldom offered in supermarkets, but your butcher should be able to get hold of some given notice. Ideally, they should come from oak smoked ham.

Essential equipment 1. A lidded pan capable of holding at least 5 litres of liquid 2. A rectangular ceramic dish, around 5-7 cm deep with a capacity of around 1 litre 3. A slotted serving spoon or strainer and a second large pan Ingredients 1 large or two small smoked ham hocks around 1.5 kg 100g Sliced Serrano ham, sufficient to line the dish and cover the top 3-4 litres Water, 2 Large carrots, 2 Sticks Celery, 4 Shallots 25g Flat leaved parsley, 6 Whole cloves, Freshly ground black pepper Method 1. Place the hock in the pan with sufficient water to cover.

2. Peel and chop the carrots and cut the celery into ½ inch pieces; halve the shallots.

3. Add the veg to the pan together with the cloves and pepper; you won’t need salt; there is plenty in the hock; bring to the boil and simmer for 3 hours until the meat is absolutely tender. Turn off the heat and leave until cool enough to handle with comfort, but not cold.

4. Place the hock(s) on a suitable board and remove the skin; it should come away in one piece; the bulk of the fat should also come away easily; if these are chopped and put outside the birds will be eternally grateful.

5. Remove the veg and cloves, which are well overcooked by now, with the slotted spoon or strain into another pan; bring back to a rapid boil until reduced to just one litre; less if you like your terrine to have a firm set.

6. While the stock is reducing remove the parsley leaves from the stem discarding any that are discoloured; chop finely. Shred the meat using your fingers into 6-10 mm wide strips ensuring that any sinew is removed.

7. Line the ceramic dish with 2 layers of cling film followed by the Serrano ham, leaving sufficient overlap of each to cover the top of the terrine.

8. Season the shredded hock with pepper and mix in the parsley; pack the strips lengthwise into the terrine; allow the reduced stock to cool to around 40Ȣ and pour in just enough to cover the contents; fold the Serrano ham over the top followed by the cling film.

9. Refrigerate overnight.

Storage The product will keep in the fridge for a week.

To serve Cut into thick slices and serve with salad; serves 12 as a starter or 6 for lunch.

What does the scheme offer? The Community Connector Scheme aims to do just what it says! It will support you to connect with: • social activities, clubs and groups and like-minded individuals in this community • the right advice and information for your local situation The Scheme does this by offering a private face to face discussion with a “Community Connector” to explore what matters to you and NOT ‘What is the matter with you?’

Together with the Community Connector over up to four appointments, you will build your own personal action plan around what is important to you and be supported to put this plan into action. This may include access to: • Debt, benefits, housing advice • Health and fitness groups, such as walking, cycling and dance • Peer support groups, arts, culture and history groups • Local volunteering opportunities When and how can I see a Community Connector? Hadleigh Choral Sings for Summer Hadleigh Choral Society is preparing a varied and light-hearted programme of music for their two Summer Concerts in aid of local good causes. We are including a mixture of light classical songs, show numbers, specially arranged pop songs, and a Swing Medley!

The first concert is in aid of Success after Stroke, the Sudbury-based charity which helps survivors of strokes rebuild their lives and confidence. This concert is in Lavenham Village Hall on Saturday 8 June at 7.00 pm. Tickets are priced at £15 for adults (£7.50 for Under 14s) and include post-concert canapes and fizz! They are available from members of the Choir or via the SAS website, http://successafterstroke.org.uk/events The second concert takes place the following week in the Deanery Garden in Hadleigh and is in aid of St Mary’s Church funds. The Dean of Hadleigh, Father Jo Delfgou is keen to show off the beautiful garden behind the Deanery, and a summer concert seems the perfect way to do it! The concert is at 3.00 pm on Sunday 16 June, bring your own chairs or picnic blankets, and postconcert afternoon tea is included in the ticket price. Tickets are £10 for adults (£5 for under 14s) and are available from St Mary’s Church, Choir members and The Idler bookshop in the High Street. Should the weather be bad the concert will be held in the Church. Both occasions will be fun events and a chance to hear Hadleigh Choral Society sing the lighter side of their repertoire.

Hadleigh Community Transport Group It has been a year of uncertainty for Hadleigh Community Transport Group (HCTG). Since 2016 we have been providing (with the help of our friends at GoStart in Sudbury) transport for residents throughout the Babergh District. We now operate three services under the name of “Rural Transport – Connecting Communities”, based on Hadleigh, Lavenham and the Shotley peninsula. These, on request, bring passengers from outlying villages without a bus service to where they want to go within a defined area or to connect with bus services for onward travel. For those without access to transport of their own we operate the Dial-a-Ride (DAR) service in and around Hadleigh. HCTG are currently running a service to Ipswich Hospital for appointments.

Regarding scheduled services we currently operate the 90 service to Ipswich in the evening and at weekends, 796 to Manningtree, 461 to Stowmarket and 120 Whatfield to Ipswich. Declining passenger numbers on the 90 and 796 services have lead Suffolk County Council to inform us that these services will cease after Sunday 3rd and Friday 1st November, respectively.

We also operate the Wheels-within-Wheels (WwW) service for those who cannot access normal transport or who require a door-to-door service.

Our vehicles are also used for other work such as school transport and are available for group hire to organisations in and around Hadleigh e.g. for trips to the theatre or the seaside.

HCTG rely on the drivers we employ to help provide a high level of service and in return we have the policy of paying at least the Living Wage rather than just the legal minimum wage. The challenge in the next few years will be in maintaining a fleet to meet the needs at the time.

Our committee are local people from Hadleigh and Lavenham: we are seeking more volunteers to serve on it.

Hadleigh Walkers Our walk on Saturday 8th June will start and finish in Bures and is an old favourite generally known as the Dragon Walk. This walk is about 10 miles and follows a route of Fysh Farm, St Stephen’s Chapel (to view the dragon and hopefully look inside the chapel),Old Hall Farm, Farthing Hall,Wissington Hall (possibly more dragons if the church is open), Wormingford Bridge, The Fir Trees and back to Bures via the old water mill. A little long but fairly easy and well worth the effort. We will probably have 2 rest stops on the walk so it might be worth bringing along a snack and something to drink – particularly if the day is warm.

We will start at the Bures Community Centre car park at 0930 as usual. On entering Bures (on B1508) from the Sudbury/ Assington direction there is a fairly sharp left hand bend and the church is straight ahead. Bear left keeping the church on your right. The road bears left then right and the car park is about 100 yards on the right hand side. If anyone is in need of transport please let us know and we will see if there is any opportunity for car sharing. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

Looking further out to July, our proposed walk will be around Polstead (always a pleasure) followed by a longish walk from Hadleigh going out to Wenham in August. More details next month.

Hadleigh Tennis Club Ladies’ Doubles The Ladies’ Doubles was the first tournament played this year at Hadleigh Tennis Club. A hard fought set of rubbers saw Debra Young and Linda Dhondy triumph in the final with Kate White and Carol McLeod runners up. It was a really enjoyable tournament in glorious weather and we look forward to the Men’s and Mixed tournaments later in the season.

Club members play all year round on 3 floodlit all weather courts located on Layham Road next to the rugby club with Club Play sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (the latter during British Summer Time) from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday mornings from 9.30am to 11.30 am.

HUFC U14s Football Squad Holland Tour

Over the Easter weekend the Hadleigh United Under 14's Football Squad went on their long anticipated Holland Tour. This has been about 3 years in the making with all the considerable funds raised by the players, parents, family and friends past and present. After a long hard fought domestic season the boys were rewarded with 4 days and nights based at Centre Parcs Zandvoort Holland. After a long overnight journey on Thursday night the boys took part in a two day tournament at Sassenheim against teams from Holland, Denmark, Belgium and the Uk. In searing heat the boys played some terrific football against some talented sides and thoroughly enjoyed testing themselves against foreign opposition amongst absolutely top class facilities which seem to be the norm in Holland. The squad visited the Johan Cruyff Amsterdam Arena the home of Ajax and the Holland National Team and had a spectacular stadium tour just a few days before their historic Champions League semi final against Tottenham. We were then warmly welcomed by SV Diemen based in Amsterdam , to play a couple of friendly matches. Again the boys played some dazzling football and the dad helpers were treated to some local delicacies and the odd beer or three ! The trip was an amazing experience for the boys who really grew in maturity and character during the trip and the lads , dads and coaches had a truly memorable time.

We would like to thank all the players and parents past and present for all the fund raising activities over the last few years that have made the trip a reality.

We would also like to thank The Thrift Shop for its very generous donation, Hadleigh Morrisons for the bag packing opportunities and the generosity of the Morrisons customers and Hadleigh community for supporting the fund raising effort.

Week Of Prayer For Christian Unity 9th - 16th June Hadleigh is often different/distinct from other places and here we are keeping this very special week in June rather than in January (as other places do).

Sunday 9th June 6.30pm at St Joseph’s Catholic Church A United service at which the speaker will be Baroness Caroline Cox who has wide first-hand experience of places where people are being persecuted for their faith.

Saturday 15th June 2.30 - 5pm In & Around The United Reformed Church “Beyond Hadleigh” An afternoon opportunity to take you out of yourselves and discover how others are being helped in so many ways. There will be informative stands from charities supported by local churches (this is all about information not money). There will be music from the Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band, the Hosepipe Folk Band and virtuoso organist Roger Green. There will be games and refreshments. It will be an occasion to indulge one’s curiosity!

April, as always, brings the London Marathon.

The target after months of training for thousands of runners, all looking for a personal best or a first marathon finish. This year, the Hares were represented by Kitty Rigby and Scott Ramsey, both in great form going into the event. Both performed brilliantly with Kitty joyously breaking the four hour barrier after several attempts at 3:55 and Scott, as usual, running out of his skin to come home with a new personal best and club record of 2:27!

Buoyed by her success in London, Kitty then went on to run the Bury to Clare challenge a couple of weeks later. The 18.4 miles in hot weather took her just two hours, fifty seven minutes. Time for a sit down perhaps.

Of course other marathons are available, and earlier in the month, as part of the Bungay Festival of Running, Samantha Cooper ran the distance in 4:27 to finish 6th in her age group, while her son, Daniel tackled the fun run to finish 5th overall and 3rd in his age group.

April this year, also brought Easter and the Juniors were out in numbers for the traditional Easter egg hunt. As usual, it was great fun for all including the adult helpers who were also paid in chocolate.

Ipswich Waterfront was the venue for the Twilight 5k on 14th May. The fast, flat course attracted a large entry, particularly as the event was designated as the National Championship, drawing runners from all over the country. Six Hares took part with, inevitably, Scott Ramsey being first back in 15:54, and Ian Bodsworth, Glen Avis, Paul McAllister, Caitlin Fosker and Julia Bilotta running strongly, with Ian’s 22:09 representing a new personal best.

Once again this year, Paul McAllister represented the Hares at the Suffolk Track and Field County Championships winning gold in the shot put and silver in the triple jump events. Congratulations to him – County Champion!

Finally, on the multisport front, Danny Preece took part in the Newmarket Duathlon on 12th May, completing the 5k run/22k bike/4k run course in an excellent second overall.

Rebels in Hadleigh 'Extinction rebellion' climate change protesters visited Hadleigh on their way from Norwich to London by bicycle. Supported by colleagues in 'Star Wars' costume, they drew plenty of attention from passers-by before heading south on National Cycle Route 1 towards Layham. As you may have seen in the news, these were some of the thousands that gathered in london to demand greater government action on climate change.

Air Conditioning – Is your car contributing to climate change We all rely on air conditioning systems in our car for comfort on those hot days, but od we really understand how it works and the environmental impact it may have. To put it into layman’s terms our cars have a pressurised sealed system with a refrigerant gas that turns hot air into cold air. Should this stop working we all think it just needs a simple recharge of gas. Have we thought where that gas has gone and what it has done to the ozone layer? The first cars to have air conditioning fitted would have had an ozone depleting gas called R12 which was then banned in production vehicles from 2000. This was replaced by a new gas called R134a, which in 2011 the European Commission asked the motor industry to find an alternative, as this is also an ozone depleting gas and would be contributing to global warming. There is now a new gas being more frequently used on modern cars, called R1234yf which is a non ozone depleting gas, with the introduction of this, the older style gasses have been limited in production and will decrease every year to make way for the new cleaner systems. All vehicles have an identification label in the engine compartment or underneath the bonnet.

As licences air conditioning technicians, if your vehicle’s air conditioning has stopped working, the first step is to determine as to whether there is any gas left in the system. If there is none present, we are not allowed by law to just recharge it without first carrying out a nitrogen pressure test to check for leaks.

Nitrogen is used as it is a non ozone depleting gas, so it is therefore safe to use for an environmentally friendly test. Crockatt Garage have now invested in new equipment along with training to deal with this new type of refrigerant in newer cars. Obviously we can still service and repair the older systems but due to its restricted supply the cost of the procedure is increasing year on year.

RETAIL MOTOR INDUSTRY FEDERATION

Well the season’s in full swing, competitions have started, and the sun’s shining. What could be better? We ran a couple of open days at the weekend and despite the inclement (that’s just a nice word for bad...) weather on one of the days we still had 20 people turning up to see what it’s like, and get a bit of coaching. Four of them immediately joined up and we look forward to more following.

Our thanks to the volunteers who made it possible. Club players range from the very good to those who just like to turn up for the casual social roll-ups three times a week, which new members particularly enjoy until they grow in confidence. Everyone whether a member or not is very welcome to come and watch the Senior County Cup Final which we’re hosting at 6.30 on 21 June when there’s a chance to see top players in action.

Our links with the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance continue and we ran our first session of boules outdoor with them in May. We believe it’s a really valuable contribution to the life of Hadleigh and club volunteers all enjoy being involved.

There are games going on most evenings from Monday to Thursday so feel free to come and watch. If you want to come along at any other time, please contact Jan Austin on 01473 828212 and she’ll organise it for you.

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex It’s been an encouraging start to the season for the club’s senior sides – the 1st XI kicked off the season with two last ball thrillers. The first ended in a 1-run defeat at home to Maldon, which was great entertainment for the sizable crowd at the Meadow on a scorching Easter Saturday. Sadly the weather turned rather dramatically after that, with players raiding their winter wardrobe to take to the field. The following week saw an even tighter finish, as Ben Wallis’s side were involved in a tie at Worlington, with 644 runs scored between the two sides. Josh Davey’s 109 was, incredibly, his first century for the club (too many 99s to mention!). Two wins have since followed, both against highly fancied teams. Wivenhoe looked to be cruising towards their target of 195 when they were 161-4, but our overseas player Kudzai Maunze then took 6-11, with the last six wickets falling for just four runs.

Dominic Manthorpe (pictured above) was then the match-winner at Witham, following an unbeaten 83 with 4-30 with the ball as Hadleigh successfully defended 222. It has been a great boost to have Dominic back in a Hadleigh shirt. He is still working his way back to full fitness but already the signs are that he will be a key player this season.

More surprising perhaps has been the unbeaten start made by the 2nd XI. Three wins and a washed-out game meant that Buster Tampion’s team were actually top for a week! After an opening day win at Maldon, we were in trouble at home to Easton chasing 173. 13-year-old Isaac Toombs then dug in and played a majestic innings of 88 not out way beyond his years, supported by his father Justin and Arran Tampion. Six wickets for Simon Gladwell and a very rare 50 for your correspondent was enough to wrap up victory over Battisford.

No one is getting carried away, and a trip to leaders Stowupland will be a stern test, but this may be a season where we can at least lounge around in midtable.

Individual performance of the month undoubtedly came from Callum Morrin in the Sunday Academy game at Milden. To score 104 not out is impressive; to take five wickets for four runs in three overs (when only an occasional bowler) is herculean. To do it all after still being in ‘Vodka Revs’ (whatever that is) at 4am on the morning of the game is Botham-esque. We salute you sir!

Just a reminder that a triangular county Ladies T20 tournament takes place at the club on Sunday June 9th. This is the first time we have hosted such an event and it should be an excellent day. The games feature Suffolk, Northants and Norfolk and start at 10.30am. The bar will be open all day so why not pop along?

First Team Round Up Our last three matches of the season saw a 4-1 home defeat against Thetford Town Romario Dunne scoring our solitary goal , Easter Monday saw a trip to a very sunny warm Stowmarket Town which saw us involved in a very competitive match against the high flying hosts despite going a goal down a wonder goal by Tom Driscoll saw us earn a deserved point . A 2-1 home win against Newmarket , Kieran Turner scoring both goals in this our last match of the season was us clear of the drop zone finishing in 16th place and securing TNL Premiership status for the coming season .

Reserve Team Round Up With their season finishing on the 6th April with other teams around them with matches to play their league position was not confirmed until these matches had been played which saw them finish the season in 5th place.

Veterans Round Up As mentioned in my last ramblings the Vets finished their season with back to back League wins which will see them promoted to Division three for next season Presentation Evenings The Veterans held their presentation evening on May 11th with Chris Dennett named Managers player, Paul Sheldrake most improved player, Ben Goodchild top goal scorer, the "WAGS" player of the season went to Richard Kossick and the Kevin Knight award to Gregg Hills Friday 17th May saw the First Team and Reserves along with Supporters & Committee for their presentation night with the foolowing awards being made First Team Managers Player & Supporters Player Romario Dunne with goalkeeper Nick Punter receiving the Players Player award.

Dixon Dart League The annual darts finals and presentation of trophies was held at the Royal British Legion on Monday 15th April 2019. A decent crowd were treated to some great darts which included three maximum 180’s and a 160 from the talented Jade Sparkes along with some high class finishing from several players.

Mark Smith took the mens singles title with a 2-1 win over Darren Rampling in a high quality match, while Nadine Leathers showed her class taking the ladies singles 2-0 from Jade Sparkes with some devastating finishing. Veteran pair of Colin Hynard and Derek Cole could not make it three wins on the trot in the pairs as they were beaten by the Rebels pair of Glenn Bentley and Paul Stocker in a close game. Ladies Doubles went to Debbie Butcher and Natalie Rampling with Emma Witt and Bev Mayes runners up. The triples final saw the George trio of Geoff Parmenter, Les Mayes and Ivan Clements taking on the Cockney Rebels top boys of Tom King, Glenn Bentley and Mark Chaplin, with the George coming out on top to win a close fought match. The knock out cup was won by the Cockney Rebels with a 3-1 win over the Beorge Bees, wins from Mark Chaplin, Paul Stalker and Tom King for the Rebels, with Tony Smith winning for the Bees.
