40 years and still Idling!

Fulfilling an ambition is not always easy to achieve. Happily for Hadleigh, The Idler Bookshop did just that for Bryan and Jane Haylock some forty years ago. The couple were living in Hertfordshire with their two children. Jane was a member of the Anstey Parish Council while Bryan regularly commuted to London to work for an agency as a freelance artist designing posters for West End Theatre.

His studio was in Charing Cross Road at the heart of the London’s bookselling area. It was from there that he could see the booksellers sitting in their shops leisurely reading their stock while he was working to deadlines and anti-social hours to complete his last minute assignments. This made him even more determined to fulfil his lifelong ambition to join the bookselling fraternity. So in 1979 and with Jane’s full support, they set about finding a town where they could open their own bookshop. As Hadleigh ticked all the boxes, in 1980, The Idler, a transformed greengrocers, opened its doors to welcoming customers and the Haylocks became hard working members of the community. Their girls went to local schools.

Bryan became an active member of HADS (Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society) performing, directing and adapting plays for the stage. His cartoons in The Suffolk Preservation Society magazine and membership of the Hadleigh Art Club ensured that his artistic talents were not wasted. More recently he has illustrated the Fidelis Cookbook, his own books, several unique greetings cards and had an exhibition of his work at the Hadleigh Health Centre. His annual performance with friends at their “Untapped Writers” evening reveals his literary skills and unique sense of humour. His humorous take on life is also often reflected in his amusing window displays.

Until recently, Jane had served as a town councillor for over thirty years. She is also a member of the Suffolk textile art group (TAGS) and regularly exhibited her work in the county. Thanks to her plants were secured and planted in the town’s Community Gardens. The Hadleigh Year of the Sheep and The Festival of Gardening and Art events also benefited from her input. Jane is a regular attendee at the monthly Steering Group Meetings.

Changing retail habits with online shopping has affected all walk in shops.

However, there are still customers who welcome the opportunity to browse round The Idler’s many shelves packed with hundreds of books covering every subject under the sun or find the perfect greeting card from their unusual selection. Online shopping also doesn’t offer a friendly exchange of opinions, a listening sympathetic ear, or the chance to buy a ticket for a local event. After 40 years Jane and Bryan feel their project has “developed as envisaged; working in a room surrounded by books with folks dropping in for a chat”.

Congratulations and thanks, Jane and Bryan, for your contribution to the business and social life of the town you chose forty years ago.

Coronavirus has produced a huge challenge for the hospitality industry across the whole country and here in Hadleigh. To allow us to trade safely for both customers and staff we have had to totally review the business from top to bottom.

We are aiming to reopen on 4th July at 8am revealing many changes to both our layout and the way we will be looking after you. We will be operating a one way system, table service both inside and in the garden with no service at the bar, operating a five day week (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays), offering food service all day Wednesday to Saturday (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and Sundays lunch from 12 noon till 6pm from a smaller but locally sourced fresh menu changing daily offering old favourites and exciting new dishes.

Unfortunately whilst we get to grips with these new ways of working we will have limited numbers customers and will not be allowing anyone under 14 on the premises. Also we will not be able to accommodate large tables for dining (max 6 people). There is good news for all our dog owning customers they will be welcome as usual.

We all look forward to welcoming you back but please bare with us while we get going again. Hope to see you soon.

Hello everyone, I’d just like to update you on what we’ve been up to over the last couple of months. Whilst the lockdown has impacted us all, we’d like not to just bounce back but to leap forward and ensure the Hadleigh community is better than before. We’ve been busy in the back office getting on with lots of things, but the Town Council is only one organisation among many and we do not have all the necessary legal powers or capacity to do everything alone. That’s why we have put an additional £10,000 into our grant programme for local community groups to bid for in order to deliver their own ideas and projects for helping the town.

I think the biggest change for us is that the Government has allowed us to hold meetings by video conference, so we’ve been getting to grips with this instead of meeting face-to-face. It’s quite a change, and thankfully it has resulted in more people “attending” the meetings, which is a great outcome for us because we want to be inclusive. Video meetings are legally allowed until May 2021, but there is a national debate about whether meetings should then go back to the old way or stay on video conference format. It’s an interesting debate about modernised local governance.

Unfortunately, a few weeks ago one of our Councillors Paul Twyman resigned so we thank Paul for his service. An election has been requested, but under the lockdown rules cannot be held until May 2021. Anyone wanting to stand as a Town Councillor has to wait until around March before the formal process begins, but in the meantime is welcome to chat to any of the current Councillors or office staff to understand the role and see what opportunities it brings.

We are all saddened that some mindless arsonists have damaged the Layham Road Sports Pavilion changing rooms. Although the building was perhaps past its best, it was still a fabulous asset for the town. If anyone can help the Police investigation we would be very grateful. However, subject to detailed damage inspections, it may be an opportunity to look again at plans for a completely new facility.

Also on the positive side, we’ve just received confirmation that our planning application for a small extension to the skate park has been approved, so we’re working with BDC to get the final details sorted out and schedule the construction.

We have already been awarded a European grant to pay for it, but we are just checking with them to make sure we can still access the money because the lockdown has delayed everyone’s timetables and it is very tight to get it done within the original window We’re also in the middle of recruiting another member of staff, and the new role will be to deliver the projects and decisions that the Town Council has made. This means that as well as getting the office back up to speed, we will be able to have a much bigger community input and you will see much more action.

We’ve been working with BDC and SCC around social distancing in the High Street, and SCC has developed a scheme for wider footpaths by making the High Street one-way (north-south) for a few weeks. This temporary safety measure will help people to distance without having to step into the busy carriageway. As an additional thought, pedestrianisation has been talked about for years and everyone no doubt has an opinion about whether it’s a good idea or not, but it will be interesting to see how the High Street reacts to this temporary one-way trial.

Lastly, after lockdown eases we’d like to put on some community events as there have unfortunately been so many cancelled events this Spring and Summer.

Therefore we would like to offer the opportunity for more people to be involved in our Events Working Group – if you are interested then please contact us. Looking longer-term, the Town Council will continue to work with BDC on the Hadleigh Vision to help take the town forward and establish its identity, and do more work around the declared climate change emergency which will also shape our future.

The town will recover, and we’ll keep building up the wonderful community spirit that Hadleigh is famous for.

Is this is what Hadleigh has become?

During my early morning dog walks every day pre / post lockdown this has become a familiar site whilst passing between Hadleigh Leisure centre and East House Meadow play area.

Whilst out on Saturday morning 19th June I was astonished to see the destruction left in the children's play area by our younger generation, Spirt bottles, Wine bottles, Beer Cans, and more, left behind for someone else to clear up. Even with the restrictions we are all trying to abide by during lockdown I find it hard to believe the minority that treat our parks the way they do.

Unfortunately Hadleigh no longer have the resources to deal with these issues, and the minority know this and I feel that its sad to say that there is no respect for our area or community anymore.

Hadleigh Town Council Hadleigh Town Council is pleased to announce that at its evening meeting on Thursday 28th May 2020, Councillor Helen Allan was elected as the new Mayor, with Councillor Carolyn Cammack continuing as Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Allan brings a wealth of experience and knowledge with her into the role, including being the current Chairman of Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity, and is excited by the prospect of leading the Town Councillor at this important and pivotal time for the Town.

She would like to thank the outgoing Mayor Councillor Steve Allman for his support and guidance during the handover period, and to praise his energy and hard work at moving the Council forward over the last year.

Having lived in Nayland for a couple of years as a child, before moving away Councillor Allan has lived in Hadleigh since 2006, moving to Suffolk from Yorkshire to be closer to her family and renting a house in Hadleigh with her sister.

As a keen, fun cyclist during 2012/2013 she supported Help for Heroes by helping organise two bike rides which together raised over ÂŁ3,000 for the charity and as a keen member of the Hadleigh Eco Group she has recently bought an ebike which has changed her life for the better.

Since 2017 Councillor Allan has helped run the Hadleigh Craft and Produce market which takes place on the first Friday of each month in St Marys Church, and in more recent weeks has been part of the central admin team for Hadleigh Cares in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. I am sure that the new Mayor will have a positive impact in moving forward the ambitions of the Town Council to meet the needs of the local community over the coming months.

Thank you Rosemary Ling and family would like to thank everyone for all the thoughtful gestures of cards, letters, flowers and phone calls since Ray passed away. We are all so grateful for your kindness over this very difficult time. A special thank you to Jackie Septon for the lovely service and to the friends and neighbours that came out to say farewell as Ray made his final journey up Highlands Road.

How a small, independent business is adapting to survive the pandemic EriVica Cakes owner Terri Newman was certainly not alone in having to make the very difficult decision to close her cake shop’s doors in March this year and cease trading indefinitely. She came face-to-face with the same problem that thousands of self employed people across England were now facing – how to pay the bills and feed her family with her sole source of income suspended for the foreseeable future? Terri spent the first 3 weeks of lockdown in quarantine, having had no choice but to cancel or postpone several cake orders.

After about a month in lockdown, more and more enquiries began coming in, so Terri took it upon herself to come up with a way to get cakes to people while staying within Government guidelines and keeping herself and her customers as safe as possible. “The majority of enquiries were from people who had had to cancel planned celebrations due to venues closing and people having to social distance. I wanted to be able to provide the one thing that makes any celebration – the cake.” This involved offering cakes for delivery only, not allowing anyone to enter the shop to collect a cake.

Cake orders and consultations could now only be done by phone or email as Terri was unable to meet face-to-face with customers. “The consultation stage is usually when I get to meet my customers and get a feel for the type of person a cake is for by discussing their likes and interests. I then draw up a design so that the customer can see the idea come to life before them. This was not as easy to do by phone/email!” Being very aware of the pinch that lockdown was having on people’s finances, Terri took the decision to offer special ‘lockdown prices’ for her more basic cakes, allowing people a more affordable way to enjoy her cakes at a time when everyone could do with a cake to cheer them up!

To ensure that cake deliveries were as safe as possible, masks and gloves were sourced for Terri to wear while delivering. The delivery vehicle had to be cleaned with antibacterial wipes before and after each delivery, adding to the time taken on each order, but these were all costs that Terri felt it necessary to absorb in order to provide people with her cakes.

As lockdown restrictions began to be relaxed, Terri needed to come up with ideas to try and claw back some of the money lost due to the pandemic. One of these ideas was to begin to stock some basic cake decorating supplies and equipment for sale in the shop, but as anyone who has ever visited EV’s will know, it is quite limited for space! However, with a bit of re-jigging and some innovative thinking, EV’s is now stocked with basic cake decorating supplies and ready to start selling them to the public when the doors re-open on 15th June.

Due to the limited size of the shop, EV’s will only be able to admit one customer at a time (or two if from the same household). This also means that customers wishing to have a cake consultation will need to do so outside of ‘shop times’. To that end, it was decided that the shop would be open to the public for only a limited time each day (11am to 3pm), allowing time also for consultations and/or collections/deliveries outside of these hours.

Risk assessments have been carried out, a perspex screen put in place, handsanitiser sourced, appropriate signage displayed, cleaning schedules updated and finally EV’s is ready to re-open their doors.

Terri says she is really looking forward to seeing some familiar faces when she reopens and to meeting some new ones.

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 58 (June - July 2020) Three regular contributors have brought very diverse subjects to this issue. Jane Richardson, who The Hadleigh Historian lives in France, has put together the Issue 58 June – July 2020 Price £4 story of Hadleigh By-pass, which was opened in 1983, thirty years after the idea first appeared in County Council records.

Photographs taken during construction by her father, the late Colin Bull, show how much the route cut a large swathe through the countryside to the north of the town from Lady Lane in the east to Coram Street in the west. Jane points out that at the time of opening, further improvements of the A1071 with a by-pass for Hintlesham were being considered and that while residents of Hadleigh have greatly benefitted from their by-pass for nearly forty years, the people of Hintlesham are still waiting.

Jeff Ward of Colchester has a great interest in the former Hadleigh Branch Railway as he was the last master at the town’s station, which eventually closed in 1965.

He has sent in notes and photographs concerning members of staff before his time there to ask for readers’ assistance identifying them. So please get out your magnifying glasses and contact the Editor if you can help.

Currently, Nigel Crisp of Hadleigh is busy writing a book Hadleigh’s Great War based on research for the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project, which will be of considerable interest especially to all those people who contributed to the commemorations in 2018. Nigel now takes us shopping in Joseph Hezekiah Paine’s High Street department store, where he divided his premises into two distinct parts, a traditional retail shop and a warehouse, something not before seen in Hadleigh for his types of merchandise.

The story concerning ‘The manor of Hadleigh Hall’ has reached the late 1870s and, with assistance from Sue Angland of Hartest, has managed to identify the man responsible for the Hall’s present brick-built facade. Asset-stripping would seem to be a modern term but activities of that nature were going on in Hadleigh in connection with manorial rights over numerous residential properties and business premises.

Like me, if you are well and truly Locked Down during this viral pandemic, why not sort out your family photographs, which you have probably been promising to do for ages. Don’t forget to label them on the back lightly in pencil with dates, places, events and people. Your pictures may show schooldays, special occasions, a family business, former fashions, furnishings and transport: if so, then there is a story for The Hadleigh Historian.

Safety is top priority as The Hearing Care Centre re-opens services in Hadleigh As it begins to re-open its services after lockdown local hearing care specialists The Hearing Care Centre have a very clear message to anyone needing support with their hearing “Your safety is our priority”. Greenwheels ‘Hadleigh Gets Creative’ aims to support and showcase people getting creative during these difficult pandemic times. During Lockdown we put community exhibitions into empty High Street shops so passers-by had something positive and inspiring to look at on a rare venture out. A High Street with empty or shuttered shop windows does not project an uplifting image to the community or visitors. As some businesses cautiously reopen, we have looked for more exhibition sites and moved exhibits around.

The latest piece ‘Greenwheels’ is on view at Paddy and Scott’s in Hadleigh High Street. Charmaine McKissock made this yarn-bombed bicycle to celebrate both flower-power and pedal-power. The bicycle was made over many Lockdown weeks from upcycled bike parts, which are covered with bespoke knitted, crochet and sewn yarns. Mo Dickins donated yarn and Tracey Pennell made some of the charming insects and flowers.

Jon Reed, a director of Paddy and Scott’s, said: ‘We’re honoured to be part of this brilliant initiative.’

Well Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Hadleigh South COVID-19 Update from Suffolk County Council As of 18th June, confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Suffolk was 1,545 which relates to 203.8 per 100,000 residents.

Across Babergh there were 153 cases, or 167.4 per 100,000 residents, a rise of 16 cases since 21st May 2020.

Hadleigh High Street - Safer Place With restrictions to our lives being eased, more of our High Street outlets are reopening which could lead to pedestrian safety issues on the narrow pavements as shoppers try to maintain their social distancing. Suffolk Highways is working to deliver town centre safer place schemes to provide quickly installed, wider spaces for pedestrians.

On the Friday 12th June, I joined the Mayor, Town Manager, and other councillors and council officers in a virtual meeting to discuss changing the High Street to a safer place under these emergency measures. Although the Town Council had passed a resolution to make it closed to traffic, Suffolk Highways made clear that this could not be achieved given the time, funding, and legal constraints. The compromise was an alternative one-way system, which I believe, would be widely accepted by most businesses and residents. This will provide more pedestrian space whilst allowing for deliveries and disabled access. I hope to see it in place by the time of this article going to print.

Coronavirus Test and Trace in Suffolk Organisations across Suffolk are working together to plan and develop our local approach to the national NHS Test and Trace programme. As local organisations we understand our residents and can call on resources and assets to both prevent local outbreaks, and support local organisations, groups and individuals where outbreaks arise. The tool for developing this response will be through Local Outbreak Management Plans which are required to be produced by 30th June. These plans include: â&#x20AC;˘ Planning for local outbreaks in Care Homes and Schools â&#x20AC;˘ Identifying and planning how to manage high risk places, locations and communities â&#x20AC;˘ Ensuring local testing is accessible to the entire population â&#x20AC;˘ Assessing Contact Tracing capability in complex settings â&#x20AC;˘ Integrating national and local data and scenario planning â&#x20AC;˘ Supporting Vulnerable people to get help to self-isolate and ensuring services meet the needs of diverse communities â&#x20AC;˘ Establishing governance structures The plans will identify and outline support for different settings e.g. workplaces, housing complexes, care homes, schools, groups e.g. rough sleepers and vulnerable individuals who may be most at risk from the coronavirus. Focusing on both preventive actions and outbreak response. The plan will also ensure testing capacity is deployed effectively, as well as helping the most vulnerable in selfisolation access essential services in their area. It will build on and strengthen existing relationship and processes already in place for these types of settings.

Collaborative Communities Covid-19 Board The Suffolk Coronavirus Community Fund overseen by the Suffolk Community Foundation has handed out ÂŁ1million to help those in need. Set up to fight the coronavirus pandemic in Suffolk, 200 grants have now been awarded to charities and community groups and almost 100,000 local people have received support. Suffolk has every reason to be proud of what has been achieved so far. This landmark moment of ÂŁ1M reaching local causes from The Coronavirus Community Fund has only been possible because hundreds of local people have given what they can afford.

Hadleigh Quarry The Hadleigh Quarry planning applications SCC/0090/19 and SCC/0091/19 went before Suffolk County Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (SCC) Development and Regulation Committee on Wednesday 10th May 2020. I spoke to support the Town Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and of residentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; objections and focused on four concerns with the applications, these being: 1. The Current planning permissions limits the number of HGV movements to 1,000 per annum, but the operator has consistently breeched this condition as their lorry traffic numbers clearly show. The proposed level of HGV movements of 80/day in any 4-week period implies an annual movement to and from the quarry of over 20,000 movements per annum, a 20-fold increase, which is too large for our present local roadsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; infrastructure.

2. I said that the junction at Aldham Mill Hill/A1071 is inadequate and unsafe. The offset crossroads has a high accident rate compared to other junctions along the same stretch of road. Over 5-year period there were seven accidents, including one serious resulting in two serious injuries. This is a fast stretch of this road and unlike the 3 other local junctions it does not have any warning/lane separation islands protecting the off-set road junction. The increase in slow moving turning moments by HGV’s can only increase the risks.

3. Aldham Mill forms part of the National Cycle Network Route and is frequented by many cyclists, including Servicemen using this route for their daily commute to Wattisham. It is currently of insufficient width for HGVs to pass one another without traversing the grass verges and will require widening of the carriageway to 5.5 metres in width.

4. The quarry operator has frequently breeched the current HGV movement conditions, more than the 8 per day allowed for.

The application could not be refused on legal grounds, but was deferred so that officers could re-evaluate the applications for their appropriateness.

Hadleigh Town Council Meeting June, 2020 Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Hadleigh North Ward High Street Changes in response to Covid-19 Suffolk Highways have recommended an emergency outline plan for Hadleigh High Street. Whilst the Hadleigh Town Council, Cllr Grandon prefer a pedestrianised High Street, I recognise this is neither feasible, economical nor practical and would substantially affect our local businesses. A limited one way was an alternative, however the policing of this between time restrictions is too costly. The only viable and workable option is to retain a 1-way system to allow all traffic to flow through the town from TSB to the Kings Head and return along Magdalen Road in a clockwise direction.

Pull in points will be indicated for loading and the disabled. Although the street furniture is likely to be unsightly, it is a workable proposition, safe and will address social distancing for pedestrians. I think we should leave the Highways and Traffic advice to the experts who have the experience and knowledge. It is disappointing our newly elected Town Councillors are not in agreement with these measures.

Communities have now received more than £100,000 in vital funding from Babergh and MSDC helping them to respond to Covid-19.

I acknowledge the key role of community groups, along with town and parish councils, in easing the challenges faced by residents at this time. In recognition of this and financial hardships arising from the pandemic, a new Covid-19 Emerging Needs Grant was set up to provide funding for new and existing groups.

Grants of up to £2,500 can be applied for to cover increased costs and the grant has a straightforward applications process. The councils’ Grants team has responded to 98% of applicants so far and grants totalling more than £101,250 have already been approved. Included within this figure is over £15,000 of funding for local foodbanks. Grants have also been offered to organisations providing meals on wheels, community information services and mental health outreach programmes.

This invaluable support continues as the virus and its aftermath remains and is a priority for Babergh. Plans were and still are being put in place to cement the community groups and good neighbour schemes created in response to Covid-19, with localities officers from the councils’ Communities team aiding with this.

Parish Council Neighbourhood CIL Payment – April 2020 Babergh have made arrangements to transfer £2,677.75. to the Hadleigh Town Council for the neighbourhood portion of CIL receipts received between 1 October 2019 to 31 March 2020.

Angel Court Pentaco’s return to works a few weeks ago. All demolition and asbestos clearance has now been completed with breaking out of the concrete slab being undertaken currently and piling works due to commence at the end of the June. A letter has been sent by the contractors to all neighbours outlining proposed dates of works and contact details for the site team if they have any concerns. I have recommended that the Angel Court name is retained due to its historic links to the area, it is well known and reflects the history of the site.

New Housing Assistance policy to help those in need Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils approved a new Housing Assistance Policy to help residents suffering with a long-term illness adapt their homes. The introduction of the Minor Adaptations Grant offers financial support to enable residents to carry out minor adaptations to their home up to the value of £7,500.

Works covered within the new scheme include ramps, bathing/washing facilities, additional heating, stairlifts, key safes and wash/dry toilets.

Funding support for Citizens Advice approved Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils gave the go ahead to support Citizens Advice (CA) with more than £420k. In Babergh, funds of at least £160,500 for Sudbury and District Citizens Advice were approved the green light over a threeyear period, equating to £53,500 per annum – on a rolling basis. With this support of longer-term funding, they can continue to deliver a much-needed service, helping the community to thrive and be more self-sufficient.

Local Locality Budget All Babergh Councillors have been given allocated a Locality Budget and I welcome any application from within Hadleigh North Ward for any ideas or causes that will benefit the local community.

As the lockdown eases and we begin to move about more, the message is this: if you’ve been putting it off, call your GP. There has never been a more important time to take control of your health.

So here is a five-point plan on how you can do just that…

1. It’s time to get tech-savvy To access the doctor online, you should get up-to-speed with how things are working at your practice. The key thing is to make sure you get to grips with everything now, before you have an urgent health problem. Check the surgery’s website, where you will be able to find lots of information. https://www.hadleighhealth.co.uk/news. Video consultations between GPs and their patients have taken off during the lockdown.

There’s no need to be intimidated by them. All you need is a smartphone or a tablet with a camera. You’ll be sent a link to click, which will connect you to your GP. Anyone who has a health problem that can’t be dealt with virtually can still, of course, come in for a further assessment. The surgery is still very much open for business.

2. Book that medication review It has become increasingly apparent that people with underlying health conditions are most likely to be affected by Covid-19. High blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease are known to increase the risk of being seriously unwell. Poorly controlled asthma is also a known risk factor. If you have a chronic health condition, now is the time to contact your doctor. Don’t put off that medication review or check-up any longer. We can help you get your health into the best shape it can be.

3. Stock up on health essentials Panic-buyers cleared supermarkets and pharmacy shelves when the pandemic first struck –paracetamol turned into gold dust overnight and many people who did need painkillers were unable to get hold of them. Now is the time to avoid the same thing from happening. Most people who get Covid-19 can manage their illness at home. So think now about what you might need. Paracetamol for adults and children, anti-inflammatories and antihistamines are a good start. Some early reports advised patients to buy a thermometer, a blood pressure machine and an oxygen monitor as well as stocking up on essentials such as paracetamol. This sparked more panic-buying but these products are becoming available again.

At the very least get yourself a thermometer - a high temperature can be a sign of Covid-19 - and you could consider buying a blood pressure machine. In fact, blood pressure readings taken at home can be more reliable, as the stress of having it taken in surgery can cause it to rise unnaturally.

You may also want to look at buying the oxygen monitor or ‘oximeter. This device tells you your oxygen level in the blood and could indicate if you are becoming seriously unwell with Covid-19.

4. Take a Vitamin D supplement Official advice suggests we all take Vitamin D supplements during the winter, as many of us are deficient. Keep on doing so, even as we move into summer.

Vitamin D is activated in our bodies in response to sun exposure on the skin.

During the winter, when we get less sunlight, it’s hard for our bodies to get enough activated vitamin D. The same is likely to be true for people who are shielding or self-isolating at the moment. And that’s a worry, because Vitamin D has a really important role in helping our immune system to function as well as it can.

5. Get used to covering up The government also told the public that they must wear face coverings in order to use public transport and is also recommending we all wear face coverings in enclosed public spaces.

These face coverings should cover the mouth and nose while allowing the wearer to breathe comfortably and can be as simple as a scarf or bandanna that ties behind the head to give a snug fit.

As the NHS reopens right across the country, it is critically important to stop the spread amongst staff, patients and visitors too. So, all hospital visitors and outpatients will need to wear face coverings.

It is also mandatory for those attending GP surgeries to wear a face covering or non-surgical mask.

As many as eight in ten people have Covid-19 without any symptoms. Wearing a face covering will stop you spreading it to other people, if you unknowingly have it. Making your own saves precious supplies of medical masks for the doctors and nurses who need them most. The most important thing is to get a face covering you feel comfortable with.

Stoke by Nayland Resort gearing up to re open in July with an important “Rest Reassured” message to customers

Al Fresco Afternoon Tea on the terrace at Stoke by Nayland Hotel After a long period of lock down which began at the end of March, the team at the family-owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf, Spa & Lodges resort is preparing to be fully up and running again in July, with the final date subject to Government guidelines.

The award-winning venue has been busy since lockdown running its Pippin Grocery Store business – now also online - selling on site as well as delivering much needed groceries, ready meals, afternoon teas and fresh produce to local villages.

The two championship golf courses also re opened last month and are now welcoming golfers who were desperate to escape their lockdown and get back out into this stunning Suffolk countryside to meet up with their friends and practice their swings again. A mobile buggy has been supplying them with cold drinks on the course, but golfers have not been able to enjoy their usual beer and a meal or snack after their rounds as the clubhouse has been closed.

This will all change from 4th July when the newly branded “Sports Bar at SbN” will be opening to serve golfers and visitors both al fresco on the terraces and inside the Bar, with strict social distancing measures in place of course.

For the hotel, lodges and restaurants there has been a huge amount of preparation undertaken during the lockdown months to gear the facilities up to welcome customers back – and to open these areas as soon as the government guidelines allow. A survey has recently been carried out by the hotel and many procedures have been adopted based on the responses from over 2,500 existing and potential customers.

Commercial Director, Peter Osborne said: “We were amazed at the enthusiastic response to our survey and at how keen so many of our customers are to return to Stoke by Nayland as soon as they are permitted to do so by the government.

We’ve put a wide range of strict hygiene and social distancing procedures in place and introduced the “Rest Reassured” logo and theme around the resort. This is to ensure that our customers can feel confident about being able to relax in a safe environment, and really enjoy their visit - whether it is for golf, dining, spa treatments or simply to escape to beautiful Constable Country for a much needed hotel break. Hadleigh Hairloom intend to re-open on 4th July Following government guidelines on personal service and hospitality businesses re-opening, it is our intention to re-open on 4th July 2020. Changes will have to be put in place and these will temporarily limit our capacity and therefore our output. In order to alleviate this we will be temporarily extending our business hours to start at around 8.30 in the mornings, continuing on to 6.00pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 7.00pm on Tuesdays, 8.00pm Thursday and 5.00pm on Saturday. These hours will be in place for the first 4 weeks of opening.

As usual we will take appointments for chemical work (perms, colours etc.,) but until or unless government legislation dictates we will remain as a predominantly walk in establishment. Please adhere to the guidance as far as you possibly can.

Like yourselves, we cannot wait until things get back to a normality we can recognise, but while the restrictions are in place please be patient and understanding. Below are the measures we have had to implement: ● Only people having a service in the salon will be admitted (unless a care giver is required). ● There will be a maximum of 3 people in the waiting area. If you have to wait in the waiting area please do not sit near another person. ● Please wait outside the door until there is enough space for you to be in the building safely. ● Please use the hand-sanitizer before continuing through to either the waiting area or directly to your stylist. ● We are happy for you to wear a face mask but please be aware that there will be times when they will have to be released from around the ears in order for us to be able to carry out our job. Hadleigh Community Primary School PE Ted’s Been Busy During the lockdown period, the pupils at Hadleigh Community Primary School have been taking part in daily challenges set by our very own PE Ted! The children have been set a total of 34 challenges which involved testing speed, agility, balance, core strength and coordination. The children have been logging their results of each test, ready to share with everyone on their return to school.

PE Ted has been setting these challenges all around the school, ranging from the main hall, the field, classrooms, playgrounds and the new fitness area. He was even spotted relaxing in Mr Pilkington’s office! PE Ted would not only like to thank Mr Peters, Mr Daniels and Mrs Kirk who have all enjoyed lending him a helping hand with these activities, but would also like to thank all the boys and girls who have sent in pictures and videos to his own email address of them taking part in his challenges. We are all looking forward to seeing the children back at HCPS in the near future, with PE Ted waiting in anticipation!

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk It seems like such a short time since we went into full scale lockdown with the instruction to ‘stay at home’. Yes, we must all stay alert to the risk of new outbreaks but it is striking that at the time of writing new cases of people testing positive for Covid in Suffolk have dropped very substantially, and the national alert level has been shifted to three – i.e. lowering the pandemic threat. Importantly, this shift is starting to translate into real change, as we emerge cautiously from lockdown.

A key moment occurred in mid-June, as non-essential retail businesses reopened for the first time since lockdown. If we can shop in supermarkets, we can now get out and support our smaller shops, so important not just to the local economy but also to our sense of community. By July, we may even start to see some relaxation of the rules around hospitality, with the possibility of visiting pubs and restaurants outside.

Personally, the most significant feeling of the tide turning away from lockdown was when I took three of my four children on the school run for the first time in months, seeing for myself the changes being implemented to follow public health guidelines in the classroom. That said, I am aware that many parents will not have been able to send their children back so I was delighted that the Government has announced a £1bn fund for catch-up resources ahead of the September term, including funding for tutoring our most disadvantaged pupils.

I have also joined others in returning physically to work after two months in the home office environment, and have enjoyed being back in Westminster, even though we’ve also had to adapt our workplace – but this makes us no different to thousands of others rearranging their usual habits to cope with Covid. Zoos have reopened; top level sport is back (but behind closed doors).

We will have many more challenges ahead of us, both economically, and in terms of the lingering threat of further outbreaks. But it is heartening that we can start hoping for better days to come.

Now we’re beginning to come out of lockdown we can hopefully feel a bit more confident about making a few plans for the summer - socially distanced of course - BBQs in the garden, meeting a few friends in the park for a picnic, and, fingers crossed, maybe a pint in the pub garden. Even though we’re still unsure of our holiday options, will you feel confident when that time comes? Have you acquired the ‘Corona-stone’ (or more) like so many of us have? Hadleigh’s Hidden Gardens in Suffolk go virtual!

For the first and, hopefully only time, we couldn’t open our wonderful gardens this year. However, a mere pandemic didn’t stop us inviting our enthusiastic gardeners to send in a competition photograph.

We switched to a virtual show on the Friday before lockdown, one of the first in the country, and ahead of the Chelsea Flower Show!

An amazing 77 gardeners responded, People’s Choice Best Garden 2020 well over twice the Helen Norman, photo number 12 number of gardens opened in a normal year, entries ranged from large to courtyard gardens, and from manicured to wildlife gardens.

It’s a very popular event every year, attracting hundreds of locals and visitors to raise money towards the upkeep of our magnificent late 13th century St Mary’s Church and the 15th century Deanery Tower.

As well as committee choices for the best garden and best wildlife garden, we invited the public to vote for the Peoples’ Choice for best garden.

279 voted, Benton Iris Best Garden 2020 including voters from the Liz Turnbull, photo number 5 USA and Canada, putting it on a par with voting levels in recent town council elections! You can view all the garden photos on hadleighgardens.co.uk, and when you see them you’ll understand how difficult it was to select winners.

While the sum raised this year is inevitably less than usual, when hundreds of people tour our old historic wool town to visit the gardens, we have still achieved £1627.80 so far, thanks to everybody’s generosity.

The three co-chairs, Ian Grutchfield, Gale Pryor and Louise Chambury said, “We are pleased so many people took part – gardening has kept our spirits up during confinement, and we appreciate all the generous donations that will help repair the roof of St Mary’s Church.” Ian Grutchfield added, “Next year we hope to stage the real open gardens event on Saturday 22 May 2021, so please put it in your diary. You’ll be able to actually smell the roses when we Benton Iris Best Wildlife welcome you in to the Hidden Gardens of Garden 2020 – Patricia Hadleigh.”

Hadleigh & District Garden Club The photo this month shows the seedhead of the wildflower goatsbeard, several of them have reappeared by the pond and in the wildlife wildlife area of the garden this summer after being absent for a few years, maybe they like the weather conditions we've had so far this year. It grows up to two feet high and has narrow grassy leaves and dandelion-like flowers, the seedheads are about twice the size of a dandelion's and quite impressive at close quarters, the flowers only open out in the morning hence its common name 'Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon'. The virtual Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh event was well supported this year and I hear that over £800 has been raised so far to support St.Mary's church which is very good news. I know many people enjoy open garden events and shows and will be missing them this year, however the RHS has a couple of web pages where you can take a virtual visit, go to - 'rhs.org.uk/gardens' and 'rhs.org.uk/chelsea', the National Open Gardens Scheme also has virtual video tours.

A little closer to home the Grundisburgh, Burgh and Culpho horticultural society is holding a virtual show this year where you can enter classes online, just go to 'www.grundisburgh.show' and press the 'virtual village show button', you'll have to be quick as entries must be in by July 4th, so hopefully this will be out in time. I have to go now and take a photo for the 'veg disaster' class - so little time so much to choose from!

Sadly the ongoing situation means that Hadleigh garden club is not able to have its usual monthly meetings or visits but you can find out all about our programme for 2020/2021 by visiting the website 'visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk', just go to the 'What's On' page where you will find month by month details of what is happening.

Hadleigh in Bloom Given the pressures on our High Street businesses this year, I did not feel it was fair to ask them to pay for their hanging baskets, as in previous years. However, I still desperately wanted to put them up - not only to brighten up our beautiful High Street, but also as a sign of hope for the future and instill some sense of normality!

As we cannot hold our annual Open Day this July, join me on a socially distanced, virtual stroll around my estate. The garden looks lovely thanks to Jeanette, in fact here she comes with a wheelbarrow full of hedge clippings.

Some of the animals at SESAW, like me, are permanent residents including Bob, the Kune Kune pig. Give his head a rub as you pass by. Next is the rabbit shed where some pretty bunnies munch hay and wait to be homed.

Beyond the ducks on the pond, Michelle crosses the field with buckets of food, hotly pursued by the sheep and goats.

Can you hear Dicky Dove cooing? He's been with us for years. Although he cannot fly he is in lovely condition. Close the door of Ruggs Cottage quietly so we don’t disturb a young mum suckling her little family. So that’s why Mum said we need kitten food. Ollie is sunbathing on the roof, lord of all he surveys. How does that cat manage to look so superior all the time?

Don’t leave without browsing the bookcase by the gate which Dawn replenishes regularly but wait a minute, people are here by prior appointment so keep you two metre distance. Our talented volunteers have been busy making Rainbow of Hope car hangings and excellent quality washable masks for adults and children which are selling like hot cakes. Jayne takes orders on 07720 079370 and collection slots are booked to keep everyone safe.

News from Whatfield CEVCP School Whatfield CEVCP School was so proud to celebrate its’ 160th anniversary early in March. To mark the event children were invited to dress in Victorian Clothing and spent all day working as Victorian children would have. The boys were addressed by their surnames and all the children were treated formally for the morning! The day included; spellings, handwriting, times-tables and drill. In the afternoon more practical subjects like gardening, washing and sewing took place. Play and lunchtime involved hoops, skipping ropes and hopscotch. It’s difficult to say who enjoyed the day more, the teachers or the pupils!

School ran differently again over the lockdown period, and although Whatfield school building has been closed, staff pooled resources at Bildeston, to provide care for key workers’ and vulnerable pupils across our federation and beyond.

On Tuesday 2nd June we re-opened our doors under government guidelines for our children in Reception, year 1 and Year 6. The school day is now very different to how it was pre- lockdown. Children come in to school on staggered start times and we currently have 3 pods.

A pod is the term we use throughout the school to describe how children are grouped. Each pod is no bigger than 15 children and they are taught in the same pod for the duration of the school week.

Each of our pods is socially distanced from other pods as far as possible.

During the school day our children are reminded about the importance of distancing and regular handwashing, our younger children in particular watch the NHS handwashing song as part of their first activities of the day.

We are very fortunate to have such lovely outdoor space which has certainly aided us in our bid to keep our children and staff safe. Each day we have ‘circle time’ outside (whether permitting) where children can discuss anything that worries us or how we can help others. Even with all the changes in place the children have transitioned in to the new school environment exceptionally well.

We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as ever, if you would like to have a look on our website or follow us on twitter you can keep up with what we are doing. Unfortunately we are not able to welcome you to visit our lovely school at present, but hopefully will be able to do so later in the year.

Babergh is also exploring ways to support our communities and businesses in Babergh over the difficult weeks ahead, in line with the package of new financial measures for individuals and businesses announced by the Chancellor (see separate article). The most important thing is that we all try to stay safe during this unprecedented time.

Your Parish Council is still here The strange times we are living through have meant meetings have been cancelled and our normal routine disrupted. However, rest assured that your PC is still functioning and continuing to work for you.

New regulations introduced to cope with the Covid 19 pandemic included permission for councils to meet remotely, and the removal of the requirement to hold an Annual Parish Meeting and an AGM this year. We are fortunate that Charlotte Britton, our Chairman, and Mike Woods, Vice-Chairman, have both agreed to remain in post for another year.

You will be aware that a Planning meeting was held on 19 May and the PC met formally, for the first time since February, on Wednesday 24 June – all meetings via ZOOM for the time being, of course.

We look forward to getting back to ‘normal’, whenever that might be – seeing people in virtual little boxes is just not the same! In the meantime, stay safe and we will continue to keep you updated on meeting dates etc via the website, noticeboards, and community emails – if you haven’t signed up yet and would like to join the community email group, send me an email: (layhamcommunityemail@gmail.com). Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk Dog Fouling – message from the Parish Clerk I'm afraid to say that this problem just doesn't go away! I have had reports of dog poo, much of it in bags, but then just left lying around near Layham Mill and on the Playing Field. Sadly there is little the Parish Council can do about this, but I would ask anyone witnessing this disgusting and anti-social behaviour to point out (if safe to do so) that it is an offence not to clear up after dogs. There are several bins around the village in which to deposit the bags. Thank you to all you responsible dog owners out there! Jane Cryer Message from the ‘Face Mask Group’ Thank you for all your support; we have raised over £200 towards our local charity fund and have received some beautiful pieces of fabric. We now have child size masks, black masks and some with longer elastic ear loops (labelled).

Description of masks: Cotton, washable, shaped or pleated, with a pocket for a filter, elastic loops for the ears, and wired for close fit over nose; child size available with ties.

St Andrew’s – your parish church It is with great joy that we will hope to be opening St Andrew’s Church again soon. It is planned that we will have a weekly opening time (as the church needs to be cleaned after each opening) and we will have signs up to remind those visiting for private prayer about social distancing and hand cleansing. It is obviously a sadness that all public worship is still suspended. This means the weddings we were looking forward to celebrating have all been postponed.

Again, we must thank Sonia and Chrissie for their watchful eye. I would also like to commend the amazing mutual care that I have witnessed as I have walked around the Parish and spoken to many of the parishioners.

One of the effects of ‘lockdown’ The churchyard usually benefits throughout the spring and summer from regular visits from the Community Pay Back Team, members of which keep the grass cut. That has not been possible this year during lockdown and the result is a ‘wild’ churchyard – some might argue that it is better that way.

Insects, small mammals and birds must be benefitting.

As you stand looking at the flowers watch out for the colony of swifts that nest in the church roof. They wheel around whistling to each other. These birds are becoming a rare sight – enjoy them whilst you can.

Churches in Hadleigh Praying for Hadleigh Despite our buildings being closed for worship, the people of the churches in Hadleigh are still committed to praying for our town. Over the course of each year we plan to pray for every street in Hadleigh. During July we will be praying for the following streets: Week commencing 6th July Churchill Avenue; Week commencing 13th July Clopton Gardens; Week commencing 20th July Duke Street, Silk Mill Close, School House, Toppesfield Gardens, Tinkers Lane, Holbecks Lane and Layham Road; Week commencing 27th July Edwin Panks Road, Woolner Close and Jordayn Rise.

Hadleigh Library re-opening As you may have already heard, many of our libraries in Suffolk will be starting to re-open again from 6th July, 2020. But, as with all businesses and services, things will be rather different for a while. As librarians, we have very much missed our customers, and as glad as we have been that we our sister libraries and Suffolk Libraries as a whole have been able to keep providing many useful and entertaining services over the last many weeks, it has of course, not been the same. But neither will it be the same for a while. The safety of our customers and staff is paramount and for this reason, the physical service will be a limited one to start with and thought-through safety measures will be put in place. Keep an eye on the Suffolk Libraries website for continued updates, and also your local library social media pages, but a few changes will include: no browsing or using of PCs and no reservations - but customers will be able to phone for a selection of titles for collection at a pre-arranged date.

We ask that you please be patient and understanding of these measures. Trust me, we look forward to the day when everything can get back to where we were, but until then, we will continue to review the services we can provide but will only ever do what we feel is best for the health and safety of our customers and our staff. Alongside our gradual re-opening there will continue to be all the services, events and activities on line that we have been making sure are there for you.

I’m sure anybody with young children in their families has heard of the Wonky Donkey.

Have you ever heard of the Phoney Pony? It’s an animal with a two meter neck. This is the creature that would enable us to get back to work, if we had it. Our umbrella organisation has come up with a cunning plan for riders to start getting back in the saddle. Social distancing dictates that the pony leader is 2 meters away from the rider up behind in the saddle. If a side walker is required (often in our case) it has to be a member of the rider’s household. After every ride all the tack has to be disinfected.

(Not sure about the ponies themselves) With our client base and our special volunteer army, the logistics of keeping everyone we love safe and disinfected become unworkable here so at present I’m sad to say we remain closed. However the RDA is busy keeping our riders engaged. The RDA website, not ours, has plenty of downloadable material for the riders: games, courses, competitions and news.

RDA National ran a dressage competition for people using hobbyhorses; they were filmed in their own homes. Some dressed up very smartly indeed, a la the real event. They paid an entry fee, begged sponsorship and amazingly raised almost £2000.

Coupled with the auction of the smartest ever hobby-horse called Valegro II (pictured) a one legged replica of Charlotte Dujardin’s famous Olympian winner, (pictured together) they sent nearly £4K to the NHS Charities Together Covid-19 appeal. What a brilliant effort!

Our life here continues very happily. Lyn has had to order more hay for the bigger animals as the grass is so sunburnt. She has opened up all the fields for the two separate herds to enjoy roaming and they are loving the extra space. The little ponies get brushed and petted once a week; the bigger ones get ridden at least twice a week each, the team of able bodied helpers sees to their welfare, as does the farrier, so thank you everyone. Our grounds have never looked so fantastic, thanks to the wonderful efforts of Saul, a regular and very necessary helper in charge of the maintenance. What I miss is the comforting hub bub in the yard outside my door when the horses are ‘in’ and the Centre is getting ready for its clients to arrive. As I write the rain has begun to fall on our very dry county. Lets hope there is more good news to celebrate in your lives, dear readers; keep busy and well and don’t forget to WASH YOUR HANDS !!!!

Rotary Review This is a short update on Club activity (or should it be inactivity!) during these strange times. Most members are self isolating due to health or age concerns but one or two are getting around, working from home or carrying out charitable work in the community. Efforts are being made to arrange club meetings via Zoom and when this is up and running it is hoped that maybe half the members will join in. Many local clubs are already using the system as are the District officers, Rotary in Britain and Rotary International.

Although fundraising is severely curtailed many clubs are using reserves and other ways to maintain donations to charitable organisations. Hadleigh Club is among these and members are donating the amount they would pay for a lunch meeting to the charitable fund. In this way help has already been given to Hadleigh Food Bank and funds are due to go to St Elizabeth Hospice and the Childrens Hospice (EACH). The Club will dispense further funds over the next few weeks to local charities whose funding has been seriously affected by the shutdown. We also understand that Hadleigh in Bloom is going ahead and the club will support the hanging basket scheme.

Further good news is that a new member has been accepted into the Club and hearty welcome is given to Graham Parker. So, the Club is still functioning and members are keeping in contact by telephone and email whilst trying to help the community as best we can.

Hadleigh Branch Royal British Legion marks VE Day 75 Peace Garden at the Community Primary School Work on VE Day commemorations started back in November 2019 when the Branch started work on creating a Peace Garden at the Community Primary School.

The youngsters of the school council came up with the design and the RBL rallied the volunteer workforce.

Over a number of weekends the site was converted from an overgrown wasteland to a fantastic useable space. Thankfully most of the work was completed before lockdown.

The finished garden has some key features. For example; a replica WW1 trench and a memorial planting bed for reflection of past toils and sacrifice. A bug super-highway with its own hotel to generate interest in local wildlife and the environment. Raised planting beds for science lessons where the children can see for themselves the plant growing process. And of course a fantastic outdoor space for reading and listening to stories. The original plan was to open the garden on Thursday 7 May 20. Sadly, with lockdown this did not happen, but it is hoped to have an official opening event later in the year.

THE WORKSHOP MAGDALEN ROAD

Following the success of the Great War mural that was painted on Partridges wall in 2018, it was decided to create another mural. This time depicting an iconic WW2 scene and to be painted on the side wall of the Ipswich Building Society on Angel Street. Huge thanks to IBS for their support.

The mural is from a photograph taken on D Day, 6 June 1944.

While this was almost a year before VE Day, it was one of the most significant events of WW2 and an iconic WW2 scene. It shows 48 (Royal Marines) Commando landing at JUNO Beach. The beach was opposite the approaches to Saint-Aubin, where there was a significant threat from 50mm

guns. They landed at high tide over the beach obstacles. The Unit losses for the day were 50%, with three quarters of them on the beach. Many of those who fell are buried in Bayeux War Cemetery.

A key principle of the RBL is Remembrance and honouring those who sacrificed so much and who helped us through the challenging times, whether its the older generation who got us through WW2 or the current generation of NHS, carers and key workers who are helping to keep us safe today. The work being done locally by dozens of volunteers who have stepped up under the banner of Hadleigh Cares to help those in need is admirable and we thank them all. Included on the mural is a small rainbow tribute to our present day key workers.

Care Home Gang Show

The Branch were also planning to hold a very special tea party for 75 special guests all aged 75 years or over, to be held in the Town Hall. This would have included a 1940’s fashion show and a wartime singalong. Sadly this event had to be cancelled.

Undeterred, the Branch took the gang show on the road and visited six care homes to entertain the residents.

Careful planning was needed to ensure ‘social distancing’ guidelines were met, but at each home, residents enjoyed a 30 minute trip down memory lane with a collection of WW2 classic songs. This was a particularly poignant event as many of the residents had lived during the war years, including a number of veterans. Each show finished with a huge thank you for the carers and key workers and of course the final song was ‘We’ll meet again’.

VE Day Home Displays With formal VE Day plans cancelled everyone was asked to mark VE Day by decorating their home and holding a tea party in their garden. As the weather was particularly nice on the day, everyone get involved. The Branch arranged a competition for the best home display, with cash prizes for the best. Thanks go out to the supporters who put forward the prize money. 1st prize, £50 went to Angel Street address, 2nd prize, £30 went to Duke Street address and 3rd prize, £10 went to Aldham Road address.
