A Defibrillator For Christmas Appeal Wow – You Made It Happen!

The Hadleigh United Reformed Church and Ansell Centre Charity are so grateful to the wonderfully generous community of Hadleigh – you have made it happen and the defibrillator should be ‘in position’ at the Ansell Centre by the time you read this.

As I type we are awaiting the arrival not the cabinet in which the defibrillator equipment is contained and for the electricians to make the connection for lighting and heating. The appeal was a massive success and our financial target was achieved by the end of November. The bulk of the money has now been spent on the defibrillator equipment along with the cabinet, signage and training equipment and we’ve enough left to complete the promised commemorative plaque which will be located within the Ansell Centre and for some other signage around town stating where the equipment is located and a small pot for future necessary maintenance. We were very aware that Christmas is a financially challenging time for many families and businesses, but you have been so generous with your contributions and that is really appreciated. The Hadleigh community and visitors will be a bit safer because of your generosity. Hadleigh will now have another, easily accessible, lifesaving system. THANK YOU. To help familiarize folk with how the equipment works we are planning to hold a number of awareness/training sessions in early 2018. The first two sessions will be held in the ground floor Community Room at the United Reformed Church on Tuesday 9th January between 1pm & 4pm and then on Friday 26th January between 10am & 2pm. The training session will take no longer than half an hour. We want to try and avoid anyone turning up to find a ‘full house’ so ring 01473 823642 to book a slot. These awareness/training sessions are open to all – not restricted to donors – individuals (of any age) as well as business staff. Further dates will be announced soon.

Thank you from The K&A Light Display Team I would like to start by thanking each and everyone of you who came along last night, you are all stalwarts of the community, braving the cold weather. We hope you all thoroughly enjoyed yourselves, lots of happy, smiley faces were seen, and a great night had by all. There are too many thankyou’s to make personally (purely as I am bound to forget some so please forgive me if I miss you, it’s not on purpose) but there are some that need to be mentioned. Thank you to all the stallholders for coming along, we hope you all had a good evening and sold some of your lovely goodies.

Another thank you goes to Gardenworx and Abacus Fire and Security Ltd, who are the main sponsors. This has helped us tremendously with the costs of running the event, and all the backers too. A big thank you must also go to St. Joseph’s Church, who once again allowed us use of their church. A nice stop in the warm was enjoyed by many. Another thankyou goes to Mark Snowling for building the grotto, a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into that, and what an amazing grotto it was. Also thank you to his band of merry men who helped himy, I can’t remember who you all are!

And another to Alex Sparkes for all his man work before, during and after the event, you were a god send.

Trev Clarke, another thank you goes to you for all your entertainment, lots of locals given the chance to shine. Stephanie Green, you have helped me endlessly trawl through the High Street and contacting businesses to source raffle prizes and arranging stalls, a lot of hours were spent doing this (with copious cups of tea and possible some cake to keep us sane). Also, to Mark and Val Kennington for being Father Christmas and Co for the second year running, you two are fantastic, and to see so many happy children coming out the grotto was a pleasure to watch.

The most important thank you, I feel has to go to my husband Kieron Ruddy who, without his efforts, there wouldn’t be a Christmas display to see. He has spent the last 3 weeks tirelessly working away outside putting all the lights up and doing the electrics to make it all happen, even after falling head first out the loft last week (those who know him will know he likes to fall out of lofts or windows, silly boy). So, I think I’ve covered most things, so for now, I shall leave you all to enjoy our lights, they are on every day from 4:30pm until 8:30pm. There is a post box on the gates for anyone who would still like to make a donation, every penny counts.

Hadleigh Steering Group Meeting 4th December 2017 Notes of Proposals/Decisions/Actions Decision on role of Chair: Three of the regular attendees have each offered to chair monthly meetings so the Steering Group can meet in January, February, March and April. The Porch Project: are to recruit a new full-time youth worker as Rhiannon will be taking up a new teaching post.

Pictorial Review: Jane presented a collection of pictures illustrating some of the events and activities that have helped make a difference to the community and our visitors over the year.

The Gardening & Art Festival raised just under £3,000 after expenses. This legacy fund will support the development of the Cedric Morris Exhibition including the recent acquisition of a sketch of Cedric Morris by artist and pupil Glynn Morgan; along with three of Glynn’s own sketch books. The funds will also enable more planting in the Cedric Morris Gardens.

There were just over 100 exhibits skilfully designed for the Bra Ha Ha exhibition and this raised ÂŁ400 for Breast Cancer Research.

Our Tidy Town now has 14 regular volunteers with an average of 6 at each of the twice weekly “Picks.� A total of 231 bags of litter have been collected from our streets, open spaces and occasionally the river to date. They also help to notify incidents of fly tipping, damage or blocked drains.

The pop up Visitor Information at the Bus station was manned on selected Saturdays from June to September from 9.30 am - 3.30 pm; providing information, answering questions and promoting the town. We met over 170 people. The new scheduled Town Tours began in August being enjoyed by visitors and residents alike.

Next Meeting: Monday 8th January 4.15pm at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Main Topic: Discussing the proposed merger between Babergh and Mid Suffolk. It is hoped the February meeting will have a presentation to hear about the proposals for the former Babergh offices in Cork Lane. A Huge Thank You from the Alison Fracella Research Trust and the Brendan Oakes Trust A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Ansell Centre on Saturday 25th November to give us such fantastic support at our 6th joint Quiz Night.

The Centre was packed for the event, we had 20 teams! Everyone said what a great evening it was with lots of fun and laughter. The chocolate tasting round was an The Winning Team especially big hit as was the Ploughman’s Supper.

On the night, after all expenses, we raised a fantastic £1,242 which we have divided between our two charities. Almost every penny raised will go towards the work we are supporting as our charities have minimal administration costs.

The Brendan Oakes Trust supports teenagers facing cancer and the Alison Fracella Research Trust is helping to fund research into brain cancer, especially in young people, at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

A big thank you to Avis Newsprint for printing our tickets and for selling them for us in the shop. Special thanks to Sue and Roy, to Kathy, Graham and to David for all their hard work. Many thanks also to the people who were so generous in their donations of the many fantastic raffle prizes too numerous to mention. Follies: - The critics raved about it but Fidelis members wanted to see for themselves. Thanks to modern technology the ladies only had to travel to Ipswich Cineworld to experience this Sondheim musical in all its glory on the London stage. It is a spectacularly ambitious production with a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21. Familiar songs, glitzy costumes, wonderful choreography and convincing drama easily held our attention for 150 minutes without an interval.

Young Marx, the play, which was transmitted live from London to Cineworld, Ipswich, presented a completely different view of this penniless, German intellectual during his stay in London’s Soho. A powerful performance by Rory Kinnear as, Marx.

Harbour Lights Trio Rob, Alvar and Derek entertained a packed Dining Room with a miscellany of humorous songs and ditties which they have collected over the years. They all sang and played several different traditional folksy instruments including a mouth organ, recorder, banjo and Harbour Lights trio (l to r) Alvar Smith, concertina to name a few.

Christmas Supper. Over 50 members enjoyed the annual seasonal supper with Cheryl providing delicious food and Phil Jackson, the music. Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group Working with South Suffolk Leisure At our November meeting we welcomed Tracey Loynds, the Chief Executive of South Suffolk Leisure, as a speaker and a new member of the PPG. Tracey told us about the initiatives to inspire people in Babergh to improve their health by being more active and taking part in a series of enjoyable activities in the four centres in Hadleigh and Sudbury. We look forward to working closely with South Suffolk Leisure for the benefit of our patients.

PPG Annual General Meeting All patients are welcome to attend our AGM to meet PPG members and hear what we are doing. The meeting will be in the Hadleigh Health Centre from 10-12am on Tuesday January 30th, and apart from the AGM itself, normal PPG business will be conducted.

In March we will be organising an Open Meeting to give patients another chance to meet PPG members and give us their views. There will be presentations about developments in the Practice and the National Health Service in general.

The twelve-year-old from Ipswich School competed at the British Modern Biathlon Championships at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, Solihull, on November 25th. He was returning champion having won the U12 competition last year. Elliot entered the competition ranked number one based on his qualification earlier in the year at one of the regional trials. He has been working hard on his swim times as this is where the points can really add up and make a difference to the end result.

He achieved a very good 5:01.68s for the 1600m race winning it by a 4 second margin, this gave him 1367 points. An hour later he was in the pool for the 100m swim which he completed in 1:06.72s earning 1208 points. Totalled together this gave him a 49 point advantage over the 2nd placed competitor and the U13 National title. His father Simon added: “Many congratulations to Elliot, I could tell this meant a lot to him and his hard work in training has paid off. Elliot was racing against some very good competitors both on the track and in the pool and his determination shone through. We were all very proud of him.” Elliot said “I am really happy I came back this year and won again, the swim was particularly hard and I had nothing left in my arms when I finished the final length, at the time I just hoped I had done enough.”

Elliot who swims for Hadleigh Dolphins Swimming Club and runs for Ipswich Harriers balances his time between these clubs and his other school sports such as rugby.

Above the Parapet County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser Benton Street options Attendance was overwhelming at the meeting I organized last month on the possible options to improve the safety of Benton Street. Suffolk County Council Highways Officers displayed eight options. These were in response to replies by residents of Hadleigh who completed questionnaires in August along with camera data gathered along the its length during a week-long survey. I was very encouraged by the extent of Cllr Mick Fraser discussion between those attending provoked by these proposals.

Not all interested parties could attend the meeting and I have received many queries asking whether the options might be displayed online. Therefore, and to encourage more parties to comment on this vital issue, it is my intention to work with Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce who have kindly agreed to display the options on their website - www.hadleighchamber.co.uk. In the New Year arrangements will be made to post a Frequently Asked Questions (“FAQ”) page. In this way a wider audience can view the presentation and respond before a trial scheme is introduced later in the year.

Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson (Hadleigh North Ward) Introduction Firstly, I should like to start by wishing all Hadleigh residents and business a very happy and prosperous new year.

After an historic period as Leader of Babergh District Council, Jennie Jenkins resigned at Full Council last night. This came about as a result of the issues concerning the referendum on whether Babergh should merge with Mid Suffolk. Three months ago this was not on the agenda, but the Leader and her Babergh Cabinet indicated that this was her preferred way ahead. Before going ahead with the proposal, the Cabinet has proposed a public telephone consultation of 2000 Babergh residents (70,000 electorate) to see what support there would be.

To put it mildly, this became the hot topic of the day following a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Call Inâ&#x20AC;? to the Scrutiny Committee by opposition Members. The proposal had been signed off by the Babergh Cabinet to agree in principle to merge subject to consultation but a number of us felt very uncomfortable about the Cabinetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision in light of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;noâ&#x20AC;? referendum of 6 years ago and the consultation process (i.e. the telephone poll). The Scrutiny Committee voted to support the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Call Inâ&#x20AC;? by 6 votes to 1, saying that the Cabinet had not followed due process, and that there was insufficient financial information and insufficient information about the consultation to agree in principle a move to the next merger step.

At the Full Council Meeting 8 Conservatives voted with the Opposition on a motion to ensure our residents had the opportunity to reconsider. This was a difficult decision but the views of the electorate must be considered first and we are allowed to vote with our conscience. In 2011 it was 60% against a merger to 40%. We shall be electing a new Leader 5th January, 2018.

Public Access The move of Babergh/Mid Suffolk Council staff was planned to be completed by the end of September 17. However, changes to staff T&Cs (mainly parking in Ipswich) required further negotiation with the Unions. That has now been completed employees have been given an additional one-off payment of ÂŁ500pp to accept the new T&Cs. Corks Lane has now been vacated and all Council business is currently being delivered from Ipswich, Stowmarket and Sudbury.

Boundary Commission The Boundary Commission has issued its initial findings and recommendations. In our case, Hadleigh will have three Councillors in a single Hadleigh Ward, however the practicalities of that are horrendous as in some cases, it means Councillors could end up dealing with nearly 6500 residents as opposed to the current 2,400 which is manageable.

I have put forward a plan for the boundary review and requested Hadleigh remain as two wards, otherwise we will become the largest Ward in Babergh.

Housing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Private Sector The Babergh Planning Committee has approved applications for some 2000+ houses in the last few months. Our target for houses built rather than just approved is 335 per annum. Some of these approvals have been as a direct result of Babergh no longer having a 5 year supply of land bank of potential building sites and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a concern to me that it might be a blunt instrument.

Happy New Year from the Tidy Town Volunteers It has been a great year for the Tidy Town Volunteer group, which has double in numbers. There have been two litter-picks a week and as we have grown we have been able to cover a wider area of Hadleigh. We have collected 237 sacks of litter to mid December, including smaller items of fly-tipping, compared to 90 sacks in 2016. There has been a noticeable reduction in littering but an increase in domestic fly-tipping. We have enjoyed our après pick socials and had a very enjoyable day out in London and Christmas lunch at the Queens Head at Layham. The Tidy Town volunteers are only part of a movement of people who regularly litter pick. Together we are making a difference and can be proud of our beautiful town of Hadleigh. Christmas Productions The Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 did a fantastic job with their productions. Both were received really well, and enjoyed by the parents! We have had some lovely feedback on both productions, and we are very proud of all the children (and staff!) who took part. On Thursday, EYFS and KS1 did a special performance for members of the community and volunteers from school. After the production, Year 6s hosted the guests and served them refreshments!

Christmas Fair The Christmas Fair was very busy and successful this year.

We have raised £812 - which is very impressive in just an hour and a half - and the children had a fun time visiting the stalls and meeting Father Christmas!

Many thanks to all of the volunteers who organised the event and helped out on the night.

Colchester Zoo Year 2 had a fantastic trip to Colchester Zoo! They had a chance to meet the Santa and the elves. Then, they got close up to the penguins and got quizzed on what they had learnt!

Carol Service The whole school went to St Mary’s Church to sing Christmas songs and take part in a service. They did a fantastic job of singing loudly and we had lots of parents come to join us too! The children wrote very thoughtful Christmas prayers and all the readers spoke with really clear voices. Many thanks to St Mary’s Church for hosting our annual Christmas service and a special thanks to Mr Coombs, who returned to play the piano for us!

Magdalen Road Year 4 volunteered to go to the Magdalen House care home to sing carols to the residents there! They did a fantastic job, and were praised

by Magdalen House staff for being very polite to everyone. They sang “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” and “Come and Join the Celebration”.

Christmas Dinner We had a fantastic time at our annual Christmas dinner! There were lots of smiles, and everyone enjoyed wearing their festive homemade hats! Everybody chipped in and helped one another. A great big thank you to all the kitchen staff and midday supervisors for a lovely meal. We are all feeling very festive now! Merry Christmas everyone and we look forward to a fun New Year!

Some children may have vision screening done at school (between the ages of four and five). However, the earlier any problems are picked up, the better the outcome. As a Hadleigh resident and in line with the Brett Valley Lodge commitment to supporting local charities myself and my wife, Hannah, thought about where to direct the money raised by the Lodge members during my year as Master and what better way than the Hadleigh First Responders. Whatfield CEVCP School

Whatfield CEVCP School thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas 2017 celebrations.

This year we enjoyed a wide variety of activities. Pupils attended St Margaretâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s church to take part in a Christingle service which was especially beautiful when we lit the candles.

Pupils also made a range of delicious biscuits and decorations on our Christmas crafts day, and had fun at the lovely â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Winter Wonderlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fair, which boasted donkeyreindeer and had real snow! Apart from all those activities staff and pupils presented a fantastic performance of a musical nativity â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Christmas Countsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, and performed to our largest ever audience of around 100 adults.

Whatfield School has been particularly praised for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the atmosphere, the behaviour and attitudes of the pupils and the caring dedicated staffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. We work hard to forge our excellent links with the church and local community, and were pleased to take Christmas on the road when we visited Waterfield House for elderly people, singing a range of songs from our presentation, as well as carols, and a lively rendition of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer.

Our sporting activities continue, with success at the Hadleigh pyramid dodgeball competition, and being awarded the villages trophy in the small schools tag rugby festival. Our pupils represented Whatfield brilliantly.

Member of Parliament for South Suffolk With the New Year comes occasion for reflection on the one that has passed and the opportunity to set priorities for the months to come. In Parliamentary terms 2017 was dominated by the Brexit process and the aftermath of a general election that called for a ‘stronger negotiating mandate’. Given the personal disappointment for the Prime Minister resulting from that election, and the huge pressure and complexity of the negotiations, it is testament to her tenacity and statesmanship that we finished 2017 progressing positively to the next stage.

I now hope first and foremost that the negotiations can move forward in the most positive possible spirit, resulting in a new and comprehensive trade deal between the UK and EU. Secondly, I also hope that the fact we have made progress on Brexit can enable us to focus on some of the other mammoth challenges facing the Government on the domestic front. From the NHS and adult social care to the continuing challenge of providing opportunity for our younger generation, there is much to occupy us aside from Brexit, and I am passionate about ensuring that we deliver a reforming administration capable of offering lasting solutions.

A key issue is that of social mobility, so that we avoid the stagnation of a generation, and in my view this is best boosted by higher educational attainment. I was delighted in December to learn that reading standards in our schools are the best that they have been for 15 years. This dramatic shift in children's attainment follows the 2010 reforms that changed the national curriculum to require schools to use phonics as a teaching method.

The phonic process means that children are taught to read by learning individual sounds and then blending them into words. In 2012, 58% of sixyear-olds reached the phonics check pass mark.

This year, 81% of six-year-olds reached that standard, with 92% reaching it by the end of Year 2. This is a credit to the hard work of our teachers, and with a more favourable ‘fairer funding’ formula for schools on the way, hopefully we can look forward to further progress in future.

2018 and the new craft room at Orchard Barn is taking shape, but we need your help!

Here at Orchard Barn we are busy making wooden tiles (shingles) for our new craft room roof. The logs we are using are Sweet Chestnut which is a wood with tannin in it. Why mention this here? Well, tannin corrodes ordinary metal which means that for our shingles to stay fixed to our roof we need to buy expensive non-corrosive stainless steel nails to fix them with. We calculate that we need to make and fit over 5,400 shingles to cover the whole roof, and to fix them using these special nails will cost £250. This is where our Community run project needs your help.

In exchange for £5 we will put a name of your choice on the inside of the shingle roof. For £10 we will put two names and so on. These names will remain inside the craft room for decades and will be seen by everyone who comes to learn rural crafts with us.

Hadleigh Quarry and the A1071 This issue of the Hadleigh Community News was in print before the decision of Suffolk County Council was known regarding the expansion plans submitted by the present quarry permit holders. The application to enlarge the working of the quarry is some five times larger in every aspect to that submitted and refused some fifteen years ago to then owners Tarmac Limited. Hadleigh Town Council, District and local County Councillors have all voiced their concern and disapproval of the proposals including some two hundred local objections being submitted. It goes without saying that environment issues and the ever increasing growth of private and commercial traffic using the A1071 has grown unremittingly beyond proportion on an unrestricted and poorly maintained road and would present real dangers if the increased usage of the quarry was to add to it.

A1071 (Hadleigh bypass) - This road was created to relieve Hadleigh of traffic strangulation. Hadleigh itself now discharges ever increasing private and commercial juggernauts on to the road where safety measures are almost non-existent. One reason given was that “Ownership of who is responsible for maintenance now recently been established”. Well the broken, fallen and unlit bollards may be repaired any year soon.

Hadleigh Art Club News Art club members spent an afternoon designing their own Christmas Cards and creating cartoons with a Christmas theme. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Footsteps in the snowâ&#x20AC;? was the subject selected for the afternoon the following week, this was very appropriate as flurries of snow had been falling during the week. The year ended with a Christmas party of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Quizzes and Nibblesâ&#x20AC;?. The New Year sessions begin on January 9th at 2 oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;clock in the Seminar Room at Hadleigh Library and new members are welcome. The first subject is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wine Bottles and Glassesâ&#x20AC;? so bring your festive season drained bottles along. The following week suggests designing a wine bottle label. That brings us to the 23rd of the month when we will be encouraged to draw onions, shallots or garlic bulbs. Our Walking Football session at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre is going from strength to strength since we relaunched the session in September, so much so we have just added an extra session on a Wednesday evening in addition to our Monday evening session.

We spoke to two of our regular members to have a Q& A with them both to see what they thought of the sessions and the benefits of walking football - Chris, 71 years young and Geoff, 72 years young.

1. Why did you decide to try Walking Football rather than â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;normalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; football?

As it's a long time since I last played, walking football seemed like the ideal option â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Chris. I am 72 and whereas ordinary football would probably be too much for me, Walking Football is great. - Geoff 2. What is it you enjoy most about Walking Football?

Just to be playing football again is great, it's terrific fun with a great group of people that all get on really well â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Chris. I enjoy most the fact that at my age I can still actually play my favourite sport - Geoff 3. Would you say Walking Football has improved your fitness?

Would you say Walking Football has other benefits, perhaps social or improvements in general wellbeing? Definitely, as well as being good exercise, it's great fun too in a friendly atmosphere â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Chris. Would you recommend Walking football to others?

You soon get used to not running â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Chris. I don't find it difficult not to run now but I would advise anyone to take their time to adjust to the sport â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Geoff 7. What advice would you give to someone who would like to play but is nervous about attending a Walking Football session for the first time?

No need to be nervous we have a very friendly group, it's all good fun and with the 1st session free, there's nothing to lose! â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Chris I was a bit nervous before my first session but everyone made me welcome.

There is no pressure from anyone, no one is trying to impress or going over the top. Everyone wants to enjoy themselves with like-minded people all of whom love football and are very happy to be able to play the game again after what for most of us has been a long time. Or first walk in 2018 will be on Saturday 20th January and will be a circular one starting and finishing at Hadleigh. We will meet at St Mary’s School at 0930 and then progress via the Railway Walk to Woodlands, Green Field, Vauxhall Cottages, White Ladies, Ramsey Wood, Cobbold’s Farm, Durrants Farm and finishing up by The Cock public house. The walk is an easy 9 miles with only a very small amount of road walking. From February onwards we will revert the walk date to the second Saturday of each month. At the beginning of the new year, many people made New Year resolutions, and unsurprisingly, a considerable number of these will have been health related.

Gyms and swimming pools see their number of visitors swell, as people commit to the 'new year, new me' mentality. Lots of people just want to shift a few pounds gained over the winter, whilst others just want to get fit. Some people decide to take up a challenge, such as running the marathon or take up new sports and hobbies, such as golf or rowing. Some of us just want to have a healthier lifestyle.

Towards the end of January and February we often see people at Hadleigh Osteopaths who have developed unaccustomed joint strains or unfamiliar aches and pains, and these can often be traced back to enthusiastic or unfamiliar exercise at the start of the year. Lots of people sustain minor niggling injuries, but continue to train, and as time passes, the little niggles can either affect their performance, or force them to stop altogether. As the initial motivation fades, and the resolution weakens, people often need little more than an achey back, or sprained knee, and a night in front of the tv seems altogether more appealing than heading off to the gym. Even the regular athlete tends to have a period of rest over the winter, and a return to sport in the new year can be a bit of a surprise, particularly if the break from activity has been longer than expected.

Frozen pitches result in cancelled matches, and frustrated gardeners are thwarted in their attempts to get out into the garden, and often spend much more time in an armchair, looking at seed catalogues than actively gardening.

'Makers of Modern Thought' by David Sharp Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents a series of 10 Lectures starting on Thursday 11th January 2018 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm.

The course will explore the lives, ideas and legacies of some key philosophical and scientific thinkers over the last two and a half thousand years. Greeks and Hebrews posed fundamental questions about life and human nature. In India the Buddha contemplated wisdom and compassion. Aquinas saw theology as the queen of the sciences but in the Renaissance Galileo and Francis Bacon laid the foundations of modern science. Descartes and Newton heralded the Enlightenment when 'reason' was emphasised by some and criticized by others. Darwin gave us the theory of evolution which is still not accepted by everyone. Nietzsche and Marx have been called the 'masters of suspicion' where philosophy and religion are concerned, but in recent times their influence has waned.

Who are the modern philosophers and what are their ideas?

David has taught Religious Studies and Philosophy in schools up to A level, worked in Interfaith projects in Ipswich as faith officer and tutor for various related accredited adult courses and given talks on aspects of religion/philosophy to interested groups. He has been a WEA tutor for the last five years and attends a monthly Philosophy in Pubs evening with friends.

Let me start by wishing you a healthy, peaceful 2018 from everyone at SESAW. We enjoyed lots of new toys sent over the festive season, unlike my local canine friend. Do you recall “Sugar Face”, so called when caught with the stolen stollen cake last Christmas? Seems this Cairn is still not very canny after being caught out again. This time he pinched a squirrel from a box of decorations, or so he thought! Turns out the brown fluffy mouthful was the guardsman’s hat off a decorative soldier nutcracker.

Have you started the New Year full of good intentions and resolutions? I ask because we animals are in need of new volunteers to look after us. Our happy team is dwindling as personal circumstances change and it’s a real struggle to keep up with all the jobs. If you cannot make a weekly commitment, perhaps you could help occasionally with fundraising. There are lots of things to do both before and during an event but it’s worth all the hard work.

We also need materials for our “crafters” who have been busy knitting and sewing during the long winter evenings. If you can spare anything they could use, please leave it bagged up and labelled “CRAFT” or let us know if you would like it collected. The finished results will be on sale at our Easter Fair on 10th March. Please leave a message on the ansaphone if you can help in anyway. The Talented Earees An exhibition of hitherto unseen works will be on display at the Quay Theatre next spring. They are by Joan and Margaret Earee, daughters of the well-known Sudbury artist, Paul Earee (1888-1968), who some claim is “the finest artist born in the town since Gainsborough”. Several works by Paul Earee himself will also be on display.

Music The lead up to Christmas has been non-stop with lots of productions.

Reception and Year 1 have been busy with their plays while Nursery have been preparing some lovely Christmas songs. The choir and instrumentalists have been involved in several Community performances including the Baptist Church, Magdalen House and Sydney Brown Court Care Homes. KS2 are rehearsing for their Carol Service in St Mary’s Church at 2pm on Tuesday 19th December. The Year 5 bell ringing group enjoyed performing in the Market Square following the lighting up of the Christmas tree.

Key Stage 2 (Years 5 & 6) Year 5 have been having lots of fun this term learning about the solar system. To enhance their learning, they have experienced a visiting planetarium, which was great fun! Additionally, they have made models of how the Earth and moon move in relation to the sun along with artwork to represent the eight phases of the moon. To infinity and beyond goes the learning at HCP! Recently our Year 6 children went on a residential trip and those that remained in school were given a project to investigate, the Maya civilisation, including researching why chocolate was important to them and how they used it. The children had great fun investigating different ways to enjoy chocolate. A massive thank you to Hadleigh Maid who were very generous and let us borrow cacao pods and supplied some chocolate for our investigations.

Sport During November and December, many of the boys and girls across different year groups have had the privilege to represent their school in a wide variety of events and competitions. Some of the events that we have competed in over these last two months have been tag rugby festivals, indoor athletics competitions, basketball matches and football festivals.

On Friday 1st December 2017, our Year 5/6 boys football team took part in the School Football County Finals at Inspire Suffolk. The event was a round robin meaning every team played against each other. As at the Ipswich Festival, the boys played brilliantly together, defending and attacking as a team. Hadleigh went on to finish the competition as runners-up, managing to win four games, draw one game and lose one. This was an amazing effort by the boys which Mr Peters was very proud of! As a result of finishing 2nd, the boys were awarded with certificates and medals. Well done boys!

One week later, HCPS entered a team of Year 6 pupils to compete in the Indoor Sportshall Athletics event at Westbourne Academy. There were twelve schools in total at this competition. Each athlete took part in at least three events, ranging from sprints, long distance running, jumping events, obstacle races and throwing events. As there were over 200 children competing in the same sports hall, the atmosphere was immense! After an enjoyable afternoon of races and events, Hadleigh CPS finished a respectable 4th, finishing just 4 points behind 3rd place. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part!

St Mary’s C of E Primary School Believe Inspire Achieve!

Kersey Mill Newsletter Well 2017 has been a fantastic and very memorable year for Kersey Mill.

Quite considerable progress with the restoration has been made.

We are now mid-way through the restoration of the Hurst Frame with this due to be completed in 2018 before we move onto repairing the machinery that is associated with the Hurst Frame. The Highlight surely was being able to see the line shaft turn by water power, the last time this turned was around 100 years ago.

“Drive it day” was a huge success with thousands of visitors. What a privilege it was to have some of the world’s most beautiful vintage vehicles on display.

We are looking forward to “Drive it day 2018”. This will be held on April 22nd, so polish up & dust off your special vehicle to get the season underway. You are all welcome and entry for display vehicles is free. There are numerous open days planned for 2018 and these can be found on the kersey mill website.

Kersey Mill now has a public access defibrillator located within the refurbished telephone box, it can now be found adjacent to the flower shop. We hope it is not needed but worth knowing of its existence!

The year ended with Santa’s Workshop attracting more visitors than ever before from near and far.

This was a demonstration of amazing support for an event that now attracts visitors from literally miles away. London Essex Cambridgeshire to name but a few.

We also welcomed back groups of disabled & disadvantaged children a group of deaf children from The Ipswich Children’s Deaf Society where guided through their magical experience with an interpreter who was signing for them and many other children who attended with their friends and family. Many thanks to Cobwebbs at Elmsett Glass & Craft Babyartuk, All Seasons Marquees and all those that helped stage the event especially the amazing Santa’s Workshop team that have worked so very hard to produce an event to be very proud of.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported us throughout the year and wish you all a very happy healthy and prosperous New Year.

Well Done to The Milden Singers!

The Milden Singers November concerts were well supported and enjoyable as ever, thank you especially to Megan who sang Somewhere over the Rainbow so beautifully. The shows raised over £600 for Milden Pavilion and the raffle raised £313 for the charity ‘Over The Rainbow’ which helps sick and disabled children. The Milden Singers are looking for more sopranos to join them, they have lots of fun and sing great music, the ability to read music is not required just a love of singing. The Planets Mars and Jupiter will put on a grand show in the pre-dawn skies as they appear to move together through Libra. Both are easily viewed with the naked-eye, and a modest pair of binoculars will reveal the principle moons of Jupiter. Mars will show no detail due to its distance, but its blood-red colour is very striking.

Uranus Is in the evening skies in the constellation of Pisces, and shines at magnitude 5.8, meaning under perfect conditions it can be seen with the naked-eye, but a pair of binoculars will show it easily.

Neptune Also in the evening sky, Neptune resides in the constellation of Aquarius, shining at magnitude 8, meaning a pair of binoculars is required to show this ice-blue planet.

Blue Moon We've all heard and used the term ‘Blue Moon’ in our time I'm sure. Classic examples of this phenomena are teenagers cleaning bedrooms or indeed the D.I.Y project your husband started 6 months ago being completed, but what is a ‘Blue Moon’? Firstly, this is not an official astronomical term, it was actually a phrase coined in a American magazine way back in March, 1946. But it refers to a phenomenon that is quite rare and there is actually two types of ‘Blue Moon’. Number 1 is the seasonal type which occurs when the third full moon in a season of four is called a ‘Blue Moon’. These will next occur on May 18th, 2019 and August 22nd, 2021. The second type is the calendar version, which means there are 2 full moons in the period of one calendar month. These occur on the following, January 31st, 2018, March 31st, 2018 and October 31st, 2020.

As I say, there is no real astronomical significance to the event, but it is a bit of fun, so be careful when you tell someone soon that their actions only happen once in a ‘Blue Moon’ as the next is in March.

December brought some exciting news for diabetics - you may have seen it on TV or in the news. Almost 300 people took part in a trial called DIRECT (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial). Hadleigh W.I. At our December Meeting, the last of the year, our talk was appropriately, on the subject of, " Christmas Cards With a Religious and Humorous Theme ".

The talk was given by the Rev. David Atkins, who first took Holy Orders 49 years ago and so he has had a good few years experience of Christmas card designs and he brought some of his favourites to show us via a power-point presentation. He did make the observation, that the majority of religiousthemed cards seemed to favour the Three Wise Men and one of his personal favourites called them the Three Wi-Fi Men. Another was of the Three Kings arriving at the stable, to find a notice outside saying, " Only two visitors at a time ". At one point during the talk, we all sang, " While Shepherds Watched...." to the tune of, " On Ilkla Moor...." which was quite novel for us and good fun!

On a more serious note, Rev Atkins told us how, after visiting Fiji with his wife some years ago, on discovering that the younger children could not go to school because the journey was too rigorous, they had a kindergarten built for them. this was opened in 2012 and they have been back four times to visit it.

After the talk we enjoyed some lively social time with some mulled wine and snacks provided by the committee.

We meet on the third Tuesday of every month. New members are always welcome to just come along.

Providing support to the community when it’s needed most Local residents are invited to attend a monthly Bereavement Support Group run by the East of England Co-op Funeral Services in Hadleigh.

The group, which launched earlier this year, is led by Bereavement Support Counsellor Rebecca Louis. She commented: “Bereavement can cause a variety of emotions, ranging from numbness to anger. There is no ‘normal’ way to react to loss but talking can really help people to understand their feelings.

“All our groups bring people together and offer support in a relaxed environment where they are able to share and talk over a cup of tea with others who are also grieving.”

Rebecca also runs similar support groups locally including in Felixstowe, Ipswich, Leiston, Stowmarket and Woodbridge. “The East of England Co-op Funeral Services has more than 90 years of experience helping families with bereavement,” adds Rebecca.

“Talking to family members about these emotions can be hard but the group offers an opportunity to share thoughts with others who are faced with a similar situation - we are here to listen and ensure nobody feels alone.

“Through talking we can explore ways to help people cope and keep treasured memories alive, as and when the time is right for them.”

As well as the free-to-attend bereavement support group, the East of England Co-op also provides one-to-one counselling.

Rebecca explains: “Providing assurance and support during emotionally difficult times is a privilege and a responsibility we take very seriously. If oneto-one counselling is a preference, we are happy to meet with you in person or we can arrange to talk to you on the phone - whatever is most comfortable.”

The Hadleigh Bereavement Support Group is held every Tuesday of each month from 10.30am to 12.00pm at Hadleigh Town Hall.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our last meeting Monday 11th December 2017: this saw us hold our annual quiz which, as you would expect, had a gardening theme.

Rounds covered included 'missing letters', 'who am I?', 'beans', a picture round on well known gardens and ending with a music round. My music taste is varied, but in setting it I stretched the boundaries of anyone's collection, covering artists as diverse as Jasper Carrott (yes, the surname was the very loose gardening connection!), Kate Bush (you're probably getting the idea by now), The Goodies (if you are struggling with that the answer was Graeme Garden!). The overall winner of the 2017 competitions was Kate Banks(pictured) - congratulations!

Our next meeting on Monday 8th December 2018: we kick off 2018 with a talk

by Jane Haylock on medieval gardens. I cannot recall us having covered this subject at the garden club before, so we look forward to learning more.

January's competition is 'cacti or succulent' so why not look on your windowsill for your best specimen and bring it along - you could be a winner! As always the meeting will be held in Hadleigh Town Hall (entrance opposite The Ram) and starts at 7.30pm. Entrance is just £1 for members and £3 for non members, refreshments and a cheery welcome included in the price!

East Anglian Garden Group Welcome Speaker Cleve West We are all very excited in anticipation of our Celebrity Speaker, one of the country’s leading garden designers, Cleve West. We are extremely lucky to have persuaded him to come to Suffolk, as he rarely gives talks, but he will be telling us of his passionate involvement with Horatio’s Garden. Many will remember Horatio Chapple, aged 17, who was tragically killed by a polar bear whilst on an Arctic expedition. His father was a spinal surgeon at Salisbury Hospital, where Horatio worked as a volunteer. Horatio always thought that the hospital should have a Healing Garden, and after his death contributions flooded in. Cleve designed Horatio’s Garden, and his talk is entitled Healing Gardens.

He will speak from a personal perspective on how gardens can enhance wellbeing, and of their therapeutic effect. Examples range from private sanctuaries, his own allotment and the much -celebrated Horatio’s Garden.

Cleve is the winner of 6 Chelsea Gold Medals, and 2 Best in Show Medal, and much more. He will be at Chamberlin Hall in Bildeston, on February 17th, tickets and information are available from Matthew Long on 01449 741551, advance booking only.

The new season starts with our annual visit to Anglesey Abbey on Saturday 6th January, for a walk in the Winter Garden, which should blow the Christmas cobwebs away. The first meeting of the year will be at Hitcham Village hall in February 3rd, where the speaker is Julian Ives, whose talk - Controlling Garden Pests and Attracting Wildlife- should be most interesting. Julian trained at RHS Harlow Carr, and Writtle College, before setting up his own business to advise on pest control, and how to make gardens a safe environment for wildlife. HADLEIGH HIDDEN GARDENS Saturday 9th June 2018

...with Dave The cold and snow has put a check on most activity on the allotment and in the garden, not that I am complaining as we really do need some hard frosts to kill off some of the pests and to help break down the soil. Also thawing snow seems to penetrate the ground much better than rain. Over the last few very mild winters this lack of frost has been missed.

Just before it turned very cold I did manage to get the garlic sown. The bulbs are split into single cloves and planted with the pointed tip to the top. They should be planted just below the surface, if they do get pulled up by birds then just push them back down into the soil. To keep the birds off mine they are covered with last year's pea sticks. The closer together the cloves are planted then the smaller they will be. If you grow the elephant garlic they can get to quite a size and need more room. All garlic needs a period of cold so as to form good sized bulbs by next year, don't use supermarket bought garlic as it's not suitable for home growing.

One advantage with having a heated greenhouse is that no matter what the weather there is always something to get on with. Recently when in there I noticed that some of the over wintered fuchsias were looking a bit poorly. On tipping the plants out, sure enough they were found to have the nasty little C shaped vine weevil grubs eating away at the roots. With luck the plants will survive in fresh new compost and a drench with vine weevil killer. It is fortunate that a new treatment has just gone back on the market. The old compost should be destroyed.

Now that the soil is moist it is a good time to go round the beds with a generous layer of mulch, old grow bags, homemade compost or mushroom compost would be ideal. In an ideal world now would be a good time to wash pots ready for the spring. Clean, sharpen and oil the numerous tools hanging up in the shed, use linseed oil on the wooden handles and old engine oil on the blades. Have the lawnmower serviced, sort through the many packets of seeds that have gathered over the years and discard the oldest of them. Some seeds though will last well past their use by date if they have been kept in a tin and in a cool place. Wash and dry the best of the bamboo canes, then put them somewhere dry, discard the bent and broken ones. I won't say how many of these tasks I have managed to do.

Finally keep the birds' water and feed topped up at all times, they get to know where it is and become regular visitors. A lot of pleasure can be had from watching the birds splashing about in what to us is freezing cold water.

Magdalen House Christmas Fair On Saturday 2nd December the staff at Magdalen house held their Christmas fair and a fun time was had by all. We had Elves at the entrance door to give the Christmas spirit and Plenty of Stalls for everyone to enjoy and buy from.

A special huge thanks goes to Hadleigh Thrift shop and Barbara Boyd for their kind donation; Andrews Butchers for cooking the fresh sausage rolls for us on Saturday morning; The Copper Kettle who kindly donated an afternoon tea towards our raffle and are also selling the residents handmade Christmas tree decorations and sweet jars in their Cafe and tea room, to help raise more funds for our residents.

We would not have been able to raise so much if it was not for the kind donations and help and support from the many local shops, residents, friends and families. Thank you all very much. In this article we remember: John Samuel Hill 1 December 1917 George Thomas Ralph Leeks 12 January 1918 With the arrival of a new year, the people of Hadleigh reflected on the lives lost during 1917. We now know that there were thirty one Hadleigh men who would never come home. The loss was being felt all over the country and so on Sunday 13 January 1918 the King proclaimed a day of Prayer throughout the Empire. On that day all the pubs in Hadleigh were closed and special services held in the churches. At 7.45pm a united service was held in a packed Town Hall. Meanwhile on the Western Front, January 1918 brought concern for the German High Command who were worried about the imminent arrival of thousands of American troops. They decided to take the initiative and plan for an early offensive which would commence as soon as the worst of the weather had cleared. Back in Britain Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig, commander-in-chief and Prime Minister David Lloyd George were in disagreement as to where the war would be won. Haig believed it to be on the Western Front and demanded more men, whilst Lloyd George believed in the importance of the other fronts and so constrained Haig’s demands. As a consequence men from Hadleigh were finding themselves in many distant corners of world.

A few were fortunate to be home on leave for Christmas, some not so fortunate, like Private Arthur Cook of the 2nd Suffolks, who was taken prisoner in August 1914 and was still in captivity in Germany. There were the eighty or so men from Hadleigh in Palestine and others were on the Balkan Peninsula at the Salonkia Front like Driver Ernest King with the Royal Garrison Artillery and several Hadleigh men serving with the 1st Suffolks. Sergeant George Emmerson with the Military Foot Police and Private George Lambert of the Royal Army Medical Corps were both in Turin in Italy.

Gunner Ernest ‘Timber’ Woods from Angel Street was with the Royal Garrison Artillery with the East African Expeditionary Force, convalescing after suffering from malaria in Morogoro (in modern day Tanzania). Sergeant Alfred William Allen was in Bangalore, India, Private Charles Ramplin in Hong Kong and Gunner Tom Robinson was in Jamaica.

Closer to home on the Western Front the bitterly cold weather meant a lull in the fighting, however, the front line trenches still had to be manned and the allies continued to suffer casualties as men succumb to disease and illness.

One such casualty was Private George Thomas Ralph Leeks of the 2/6th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment who died while being treated for cerebrospinal meningitis while in hospital at St Omer in northern France.

George was born in 1889 at Great Waldringfield and spent his early life with his family living at various places in the Sudbury area. In 1909 he married a Hadleigh girl, Lilian Mabel Willis and set up home at 36 Bridge Street and had a daughter called Rose. George Leeks’ military movements are unclear, although he seems to have been conscripted into the Norfolk Regiment early in 1917 and then transferred to the 2/6th Manchesters. He was in Belgium with the Manchesters in the summer of 1917 and no doubt saw lots of action in the lead up to and during the Third battle of Ypres.

By early October conditions according to the battalion war diary were “very severe weather – the heavy rain and deep mud making conditions very trying for the troops”. The Manchesters went on to take part in the Battle of

Wed 2 Jan. Sergeant Ephraim Hammond [born Semer] of the Canadian Black Watch has won the Military Medal. He is the son of Mrs Hammond who lives at 129 High Street, Hadleigh.

Wed 2 Jan. A newsy letter received from 2nd Lieut Frederick C Emeney, 8th Suffolks Western Front: - ‘ ….we mustn’t grumble but be thankful that we are to have Christmas out of the line. We want the men to have a jolly Christmas this year. Of course there is always plenty for them to eat – turkey, fowls, beef and pudding – and always plenty of smokes and drinks. The real job is to make it like a Christmas meal, when you cannot get tables, plates and mugs for them it is a puzzle how they are to enjoy the good food better than a piece of bully beef’.

Wed 16 Jan. We heartily congratulate Capt. Hugh Grimwade MC [originally of Toppesfield Hall] upon the new honour of the Distinguished Service Order.

Wed 30 Jan. The Hadleigh Volunteer Company [‘Home Guard’] went to Chelmsford by special train last Sunday morning to attend the inspection there

by General John French [former Commander-in-Chief on Western Front].

Poelcapelle in October 1917 which led to the taking of the Passchendaele ridge. Although it came at a cost; 19 dead, 7 missing, 78 wounded and 70 taken sick. George Leeks was himself taken sick at some point later and transferred to a field hospital at St Omer where he died. He was buried in one of the communal graves at Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery and is remembered on the Hadleigh War Memorial. His wife remarried and kept the Queen’s Head at Layham into the 1950s with her second husband, Arthur Thorpe who served with the 7th Suffolks and was himself wounded on the Somme.

In 2017 Mark Brennan had the pleasure of accompanying Jim and Sheila Hill, Peter and Deborah Gowers and other family members on a pilgrimage to the battlefields of France. The group were retracing the steps of Jim and Deborah's uncle who was killed in action on 1 December 1917 while serving with the Grenadier Guards. Private John Samuel Hill was the son of Samuel Arthur and Julia Alice Hill who lived at 1 Station Road, Hadleigh. Despite the fact that 1 Station Road is diagonally opposite the Hadleigh War Memorial, John's name does not appear on the memorial. His body was lost on the battlefield and if ever found, it was never identified. During the trip we visited the closest CWGC cemetery to the battlefield (Fifteen Ravine Cemetery) where it is possible that John's remains were later buried. We paused at the graves of two 'Unknown Grenadier Guards' to lay poppies. While we had no way of knowing, there was a strong feeling that we had found John's final resting place. John Samuel Hill was just 19 when he was killed and he is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial to the Missing at Louverval. During this trip we also remembered two other men with Hadleigh connections who were killed in 1917; Bertie Gowers and Robert Skinner. It was an emotional few days and one of the highlights of the year for all who attended.

When the guns fell silent at 11am on the 11th of November 1918 there was widespread relief that the mass slaughter of the Great War was finally over. In over 4 years of conflict, the British and Commonwealth forces lost 800,000 killed (Same number as the current population of Suffolk). Thousands more came home physically and mentally scarred, many dying prematurely as a result.

Families were broken and a tidal wave of grief had swept across the entire nation. The political and social landscape of the country was changed forever and organisations like the British Legion were set up to offer support to returning soldiers and families. The Legion also took on the role of the Nation’s Custodian of Remembrance and has marked the anniversary of that first armistice day every since. The Hadleigh Branch of the RBL was one of the first Branches established in the country and this year are planning a number of commemorative events. More information will follow and we hope that the community will get involved and help us to mark this significant anniversary. We are specifically asking for help with the following: Poppy Display - We invite schools, organisations & general public to make poppies which will be secured to the car park fence (next to Barclays) on the High Street from August to November.

House Poppy Plaques - There are around 40-50 houses in the town that used to be the homes of soldiers listed on the war memorial. We are producing ceramic plaques (similar to the one shown) that will depict a poppy and the words ‘A fallen soldier of the Great War, 1914-1918 once lived here’. We will invite the current home owner to mount the plaque on the front of their house.

Individual Story Boards - We will invite local businesses with a window on the High Street to display an individual soldiers story board in their window. This will give passers by an opportunity to read about some of Hadleigh’s Great War Heroes.

5000 Knitted Poppies - We will create a large poppy display at St Mary’s church but will need in the region of 5000 knitted poppies and so we invite local knitters to use any spare time to start knitting.

Dear Sir, Once again, Sue and I have been overwhelmed by the response from Hadleigh's people to our request to consider whether they could spare an odd item for the Foodbank, and we are delighted to report that, once again, your generosity has exceeded expectations, especially as food prices have increased and there's been a particularly cold period.

Not once have we encountered anything but tremendous good will and understanding for this idea. People all over Hadleigh have made collections amongst their friends and work groups, or gone without Christmas cards or gifts, to put the money towards food for people struggling to make ends meet, instead.

We are particularly proud to say that we at the Town Council have continued to do this for a third year running, and we know that other groups in Hadleigh are doing the same. Thank you, again, all who took part.... you are the real Secret Santas.

Dear Sir, Further to Robert Gales’ letter, none of us living in Ivy Tree lane have any complaints about the way Hadleigh quarry is currently operating, what we are concerned about is the site being turned into a permanent large scale aggregates processing centre with all the attendant noise, dust, and greatly increased lorry traffic through the A1071 junction. We don’t know how long Mr Gales has lived in Hadleigh but when we moved here in 1982 the bypass did not exist, the quarry was dormant, and had been for many years. In fact it was dormant long before our predecessors lived here. So wherever the aggregates for the bypass came from, it wasn’t Hadleigh quarry. We were told that, although poor quality, Hadleigh quarry aggregates were only used out of necessity for building Wattisham airfield in the run up to World War 2. It seems unlikely that low grade aggregates were used in manufacturing Hadleigh High Street paving stones, which, presumably were made locally.

Perhaps he is just confused and as for his infantile attempts at sarcasm, the less said the better.

Dear Sir, I take issue with Sue Monks’ letter in the December issue of HCN about car parking. For Sue to suggest that motorists should be subsidised with free public car parks and that cutbacks be directed to other areas of local government is wrong. Not everyone is a car driver. It is unreasonable for those people who are unable to drive – or who chose the more environmentally and socially aware option to cycle, walk (or even ride a horse) – to subsidise motorists.

I have yet to come across any properly researched evidence demonstrating that a moderate car park cost would prevent drivers from coming into a town like Hadleigh – despite moans to the contrary. The powerful car lobby has ensured that government taxes on fuel have been frozen for many years and that there has been a reduction in “car tax” costs in real terms so it really is fair and reasonable to ask drivers to contribute towards the benefits they receive in having public car parks.

I don’t expect this letter to be popular with the majority of motorists – as nobody likes paying more for anything without whinging – but it is just a matter I believe to be fair.

Dear Sir, Benton Street Options - The future of Hadleigh depends on easy transport access. Lack of strategic thinking in the past ignored growth in vehicles. No thought was given to the southern route to and from the A12 and to train stations. Developments were allowed without planning for neighbourhood infrastructure. Lack of foresight! Now, SCC Councillor for Hadleigh – Mick Fraser is prepared to address this issue. At last someone is showing concern for the safety of pedestrians and Hadleigh’s heritage. But where were the Council representatives at the meeting he organised in December?

Are the Babergh and Hadleigh Town Councillors not interested in planning Hadleigh’s future? Only BDC Cllr. Sian Dawson and HTC Cllr. Sue Monks attended to hear the views of their constituents forcibly expressed? BDC Hadleigh South Councillors were absent.

Where do their interests lie? Are they intent on changing the character of Hadleigh by introducing parking charges and killing off the High Street? It would certainly reduce the traffic.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders declared a non-pecuniary interest in the Grievance Panel item due to his involvement with this matter. This declaration of interest was made at the time it was raised on the Agenda.

MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 19th October 2017 were taken as read, subject to changing the word ‘Feoffee’ to ‘Trustee’ in the Matters Arising item, were confirmed and signed.

MATTERS ARISING Police The Clerk read the response received from Mr. Tim Passmore advising that he would be discussing Suffolk constabulary’s financial planning process with the Chief Constable in due course and will await out settlement from government in December before deciding how we meet the financial challenges we face.

Whilst Suffolk Constabulary collaborate with Norfolk and have saved £26m since 2010 through this successful collaboration local policing is not collaborated so decisions made in Norfolk do not affect local policing in Suffolk.

At this point the meeting was adjourned for members of the public to speak on highway questions for Suffolk County Councillor Fraser; grant made to Sudbury Citizens Advice Bureau, parking in Hadleigh and what is happening with the Neighbourhood Plan.

POLICE The Clerk advised that no information had been received from the Police. The Clerk reported on incidents which had occurred recently on Corks Lane Playground to which the Police have been informed. The Police have advised that this will be one of the areas they will regularly patrol. The Clerk requested that if members of the public become aware of any incidents please could they advise the Council accordingly.

the building on Corks Lane. Information was given by Councillor Grandon and Councillor Byrne following the meeting held at Babergh District Council to meet with the architects and Officers involved in the future use of the building.

Councillor Haylock reported that she had been made aware of a resident who had incurred a 50 mile journey following advice that the form that was required was at Ipswich, it wasn’t, and had to go to Sudbury to collect it. This is one of the impacts the closure of Corks Lane has had on residents. It had taken fifteen minutes for Councillor Haylock to have a telephone call answered which, again, is unacceptable.

Suffolk County Councillor Fraser had provided detailed drawings of eight highway proposals for Benton Street and replied to a number of questions raised. He would be presenting these documents to the public on Tuesday 12th December between 7pm and 8pm in the Guildhall assisted by Suffolk County Council Officers. A request was made that the Town Council staff assist in publicising this event.

Councillor Young asked Councillor Fraser if there could be weight restrictions imposed on Toppesfield Bridge. She had raised concerns previously over the traffic using the bridge especially at the time of the May Show. Councillor Fraser agreed to provide Councillor Young with a written reply.

Councillor Whiting requested that Suffolk County Council consider providing a traffic plan for the whole town and not just Benton Street especially as new developments were being considered and traffic is increasing everywhere.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor thanked all those who supported her at the Remembrance Day event in the town.

STANDING ORDER NO. 40 Councillor Cook asked if the Town Clerk is aware that finally on November 27th work is to begin on remedial works at Queen Street and Church Street which I understand is to be more than the patching which has gone on previously.

The Clerk advised that to date no information on this work had been received.

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £23,088.44 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment.

PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 9th November 2017 were noted.

Babergh & Mid-Suffolk Joint Local Plan: Consultation Document – August 2017 – The Chair advised that Hadleigh Town Council’s submission had been made.

SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 2nd November 2017 was received and accepted.

REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Shearly-Sanders reported that following representations made by Parish Councils there is new constitution for the Babergh Alliance of Parish and Town Councils. Hadleigh Town Council had voted not to sign the previous constitution presented. The group is working on the local plan and had submitted an extensive report.

HADLEIGH TOWN FORUM Councillor Young reported that everything was on track. There was only one problem which is that it would appear that lighting up of the main tree is to take place on Saturday 25th November to coincide with the event happening in Long Bessels and could this be postponed.

Councillor Young was advised that the main tree is being erected on the 25th November in line with the trees being erected along the High Street and had nothing at all to do with the event in Long Bessels. The electricians would be on site and switching the lights on to test that they work.

There were a number of options put forward – that the lights are left on; the lights be switched off prior to the event; that the tree remains unlit until the 9th December, although this was felt a waste as the Council were paying over £1,000 for the tree. As there was no agreement made it was agreed that Councillor Young arrange to meet with the Mayor and the Office Administrator who was arranging the main tree to finalise arrangements for lighting the tree.

BUDGET BIDS The Town Clerk asked that any final budget bids be made at this meeting.

Councillor Haylock requested that there be enough money to fund Tourism booklets. Councillor Wilson requested £5,000 be included in the budget to be used for events for the next twelve months. Councillor Young hoped that the tourist working group would be able to work with the Town Forum and the Environment & General Purposes Committee in organising events. Councillor Cook pointed out that there was already an amount of £5,000 budgeted for the Battle’s Over Event in 2018.

Councillor Byrne requested that an amount of money be included in the budget to employ a contractor to help with the watering of the High Street hanging baskets.

ALDHAM COMMON CHARITY It was agreed that Mr. Keith Grimsey remain as a Nominative Trustee of this Charity for a further four years.

GRIEVANCE PANEL HEARING Following Councillor Shearly-Sanders declaring a non-pecuniary interest in this item Councillor Angland advised that, as Chair of the Grievance Panel,

she wanted to make a statement. At this point Councillors Shearly-Sanders, Wilson and Young stated that this was unlawful and left the room. The Town Clerk made a formal complaint against one of the Town Councillors for 'bullying, harassment and intimidation'. The Council's Grievance Panel held a meeting on the 30th October, the outcome of which was that the complaint was upheld.

The decision of the Panel was that a written and public verbal apology should be made to the Town Clerk. Also, with immediate effect, all communications, by letter or email, from the Councillor to the Clerk will be directed to the Town Mayor who will forward to the Clerk if deemed necessary. This sanction will be reviewed in May 2018. Would the relevant councillor like to make a public apology? No apology was made.

TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee noted the Schedule of Decisions of the Local Planning Authority.

BABERGH & MID-SUFFOLK JOINT LOCAL PLAN: CONSULTATION DOCUMENT â&#x20AC;&#x201C; AUGUST 2017 The Chair advised that the response to the consultation had to be submitted by Friday 10th November. She felt that the public consultation had been very well attended by members of the public but on checking on the website it would appear that only one comment had been submitted on-line. The Chair provided members with a copy of the site location map with numbers of the section on the side and the number of houses recommended for each site. Members were asked for general comments on the document to assist with the submission to be made by the Chair, Vice-Chair and Town Clerk on Friday 10th November. Items raised included affordable housing for both young and old, accessible housing for the elderly and social/council housing for those wishing to rent. Concerns were raised over infrastructure in the town and pressure put on existing facilities. Highway issues included access through Benton Street; access to the A12; the A1071 is classed as a dangerous road and public transport is very poor.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS The Clerk advised that, on the advice of Babergh District Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Planning Officer Wincer Kievenaar will be submitting a Section 73 (Variation of Condition) on the cemetery plans at a cost of ÂŁ195.

Councillor Young questioned the Clerk on the original planning application and consent given and if all the alterations had been made clear. She was advised by the Chair that this item could not be discussed under the Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s six month rule.

Parish Council The main matters discussed during the Parish Council meeting of 29 November 2017 were: • Public Forum The parishioner present said speeding was still a significant problem and referred to the recent accident in Upper Street. The Clerk had also received an email from another parishioner who had witnessed the accident, but was not able to be present at the meeting. The Chairman said the PC was taking the problem of speeding very seriously and was working with Suffolk CC to consider all options, which included VAS signs and also the new Automatic Number Plate Recognition system.

• Babergh District Council report Councillor Ward said that, following the move to Endeavour House, it had been decided to locate a public access point in Sudbury because the town had recorded the highest number of face-toface enquiries; it was possible that there might be a public access point in Hadleigh in the future, although this would not be open seven days a week. In response to a question from Councillor Laing concerning the Council Tax reduction scheme, Councillor Ward confirmed that this would lead to a reduction in revenue. In response to a further question from Councillor Laing, he said that the cost of maintaining security at Corks Lane would depend on the duration for which cover was needed; this would be discussed in Cabinet very soon and there would be an announcement in the New Year. Councillor Ward invited comments with regard to the proposed merger with Mid Suffolk.

Councillor Laing said he personally was not in favour as a merger could lead to a loss of local knowledge; he said other parishioners shared his view.

Councillor Ward said the final decision would be made by Cabinet; Councillor Laing felt this would not be democratic. The decision not to hold another referendum had been ‘called in’ to the Scrutiny Committee and referred back to Cabinet.

• Budget & Precept for 2018/19 The recommendations of the working party were noted; it was agreed that it would be prudent to include an amount in the budget for the appointment of a Data Protection Officer to comply with the new legislation being introduced in May 2018; however, further information was awaited. The draft budget was approved unanimously; there would be no increase in the precept for 2018/19.

• Internal audit It was agreed unanimously that SALC should be re-appointed internal auditors for 2017/18.

• Emergency Plan Sue Hearne, Babergh’s Emergency Planning Officer, would be visiting the church and the village hall with Councillor Curran to assess their suitability as rest centres. He would bring costings for an emergency box to the next meeting and it was agreed in principle that two boxes would be required, one for Lower and one for Upper Layham. Councillor Gunn confirmed that all the grit bins were full; the Clerk would resend the guidance notes to all volunteers.

• Defibrillator for Brett Green It had been confirmed that planning permission would not be required for this. However, further clarification was awaited from Babergh’s legal team before the way forward could be agreed.

• CPR training The Chairman thanked everyone who had been involved so far. About 20 people had now been trained in the basics. There would be another session for residents of Old Orchard in the New Year. It was agreed that councillors would give some thought to organising further sessions in January / February 2018.

• Suffolk Minerals & Waste Local Plan Councillor Pratt had attended a meeting of the Gravel Pit Liaison Committee held on 27 November. He said that there had been some concern that the pit could be used for rubbish, but this was not the case; any future work would be the extraction of gravel only and the Committee would continue to monitor developments.

• Green Team The Chairman thanked all who had participated in the working party to build the insect hotel and plant wild flower seeds in the conservation area of the Playing Field.

• Funding & Volunteering Fair The Chairman’s report on the event held on 25 October was noted. It appeared that there could be funding opportunities through Community Action Suffolk, using their new funding search tool available to members.

• Planning With regard to the retrospective application for external lighting at The Marquis, Babergh’s Planning team had confirmed that the application was still undetermined as further clarification had been sought from the agent.

• Sat Navs It was agreed that the Clerk should approach SCC Highways about a sign at the top of Water Lane; before proceeding, she would clarify who would be liable to pay for it.

Thank you again Neil Luxton Neil Luxton is a very generous man. Every year, he uses his skills as a stonemason to clean our war memorial prior to the annual Remembrance service and refuses to accept payment for the work. This year he found lead letters missing and in addition to cleaning the granite cross replaced the letters. Neil lived in Lower Layham for several years but has moved to be nearer his Sudbury workshop. If ever you need any stone carving done, call up Neil’s name on the internet and you will find examples of his work. The picture shows Neil with his memorial to Jeremy Beadle.

Green Team Following success with the building of an ‘insect hotel’, members of the Green Team went on to sow an area of ground in the Conservation Area with wild flower seeds. Doreen Sillett and Sheila Roberts are seen at work in the picture. It is understood that the ground may be too fertile for many wild flowers to thrive (they like fairly sterile soil best) but it will be interesting to see what happens. If the experiment is successful the sowing will be extended next year.

The tree that was burned when the van self-ignited at the entrance to Brett Green has, at long last, been replaced. The Parish Council had waited to see if the damaged tree would revive. It became clear that it would not so the decision was made to replace it using Parish funds. Bob Sillett did most of the hard work in planting the new tree – which is a hawthorn and should eventually treat us to white blossom in the spring each year. The planting pit was excavated from builder’s sand and gravel and the hole replenished with mole hill soil and high quality fertilised tree-planting medium. A watering pipe has been inserted which will take water right down to the root ball. Let’s hope the new tree thrives.

Playing Field 100 Club, The winning tickets in the November draw were: £25 Ticket No 17 McCoid, £15 Ticket No 56 Morsman A curious swan One day at the beginning of December a fine adult swan was seen taking an exploratory tour of Mill Lane and Watermill Close. It was surprisingly unphased by the closeness of people and didn’t act at all aggressively when approached. It must have been out and about for a couple of hours before using the length of Watermill Close as a runway and taking flight over Brett Green and presumably back to the river.

Layham Local History Group Photographs keep being found and added to our village archive. This very clear picture was taken outside Kiln Cottage on Upper Street. It is a guess that it was taken in the 1930s and we wonder if anyone can tell us who the young people are? The picture deserves close study and, depending upon your age, you will notice different things. My eye goes straight to snake belt fastener that any male wartime baby will remember!

Surprised golfers walked into their changing room and found a pop up art gallery - featuring themselves. Artist Neil Jacobs had secretly been painting portraits of his fellow members of the Saturday Morning Ultimate Golf Society (SMUGS) at Newton Green Golf Club. He then hung them on the pegs in the club changing room as the 16-strong group turned up for one of their weekly sessions. Neil, an 88-year-old former college head of art, used photos of his golfing friends to make sure he was able to achieve remarkable likenesses of them all. One said: “The paintings provided a wow factor for his golfing friends and others who passed through the changing room that day. His creative talents and ideas of causing surprises never cease to amaze admirers of his work, and his golf his pretty good too.”

The paintings were on display before the annual festive lunch and annual meeting of the SMUGS, which decided to donate £150 to the Sudbury Kernos centre and £300 for shrubs for landscaping at the club.

Introducing Simon Shield Cars Driving in winter is very different from other times of the year.

Darker days and unpredictable weather don’t help. Here are a few tips to keep you motoring.

1. Check your journey for hazards and weather conditions.

Take extra time if necessary.

2. De-ice the car before moving off and remove any snow from the roof and take a scraper with you for the return journey.

3. Make sure you can see out of all the windows and mirrors.

4. Keep your anti-freeze in your water bottle topped up.

5. Warm up the car.

6. Blankets, wellington boots, torch, food, drink, shovel, coat, hat, gloves, sunglasses, warning triangle are extra items to keep in the car.

7. Keep your breakdown cover details in your phone or in the car.

8. Ensure your lights are clean and working.

9. Is your battery fully charged?

10. And your mobile phone is fully charged.

11. Keep a good distance between you and the car in front.

12. Slow your speed.

13. Try not to brake too heavily, apply gently.

14. Whilst driving, look as far ahead as possible to see what’s happening. This gives you more time to brake or move over.

15. Don’t ignore road signs, use them to your advantage.

16. Stay alert at all times, if you’re feeling drowsy open the window or stop for a break.

Suffolk Rockets NC still can't believe how popular and successful the club has been since it started in August, thank you to everyone who has supported us, trained with us and volunteered at the club, without you we wouldn't be here.

In November Suffolk Rockets hosted their first Netball Tournament at Hadleigh High Leisure centre for 'Back to Netball' teams. Altogether 5 teams took part, two from Suffolk Rockets. It was a brilliant day, the sun was shining but there was a slight chill in the air! Everyone played amazingly and there was so much enthusiasm, passion and determination on court as well as fun, laughter and lots of friendly banter! The winners were 'Barnardiston' from West Suffolk. Both Suffolk Rockets teams improved from their previous tournaments scoring more goals, giving away less penalties and putting into practice what they have learnt in training we are very proud of them. Back to Netball training starts again 3rd January 8-9pm Hadleigh high leisure centre (outdoors) our first session back is Free so come along and give it a go!

Our youth teams had their last league games on 6th December which was the battle of the Rockets as they played against each other 'Cosmic Rockets V Saturn Rockets'. It was a great game to watch with both teams being very competitive and showing off their defending skills which led to a low scoring game but Saturns took the win 8-3 to secure themselves a 3rd place position in the league and Cosmics sitting in at 4th place - not bad considering it's their first season! The Brettsiders under 11s enjoyed back to back victories over Ipswich Athletic, firstly in the league and then in the next round of the Plate. The next match was against Trimley Red Devils Blacks. The Brettsiders were winning by halftime but alas the “Kingswood” effect kicked in during the 2nd half. Half the team go to Hadleigh Community School and a week of fun at Kingswood followed by a football match proved to be a step to far! A loss resulted but the boys kept going to the end (and probably slept well that night!). Next up was a match against Trimley Red Devils Reds, in the next round of the Plate. A tough match against higher level opponents saw the Brettsiders exit the Plate. Final match of the year was a fantastic win and performance against Brantham Imps, best football of the season by the Brettsiders Next year brings new hope and a new kit! Buying a new kit (and tracksuit tops) has only been possible as a result of the kind sponsorship by I.D. Plumbing and SHK Finance.

Hadleigh United U7s Football team have been busy over the last few months taking part in Suffolk FA's 4v4 festivals at Ipswich Town and Waltham le Willows FC. This involved playing games with other clubs from the Ipswich and South Suffolk area. The boys have developed their skills from attending the Hadleigh United Saturday Morning community club run by Gavin and Richard, along with and many other parent volunteers. The Saturday morning sessions restart in March 2018 (after the winter break). The time is 9-10.15am for boys and girls aged 5-9 regardless of their footballing ability. The sessions are fun and based around skills and small games. Cost - £4 as you play.

Well, you’d think a bowls club would be all about bowling wouldn’t you, but across December there seems to be even more socializing, eating and drinking than usual. 75 people got together for the annual dinner and prize draw and then found themselves racking their brains over the quiz. I mean, who knew that Rudolph wasn’t one of Santa’s reindeers and how did Cupid get on the list anyway? And we should all have known that Mary and Joseph were travelling from Nazareth but I don’t think we’ve played them this season so far, so it’s easy to forget. Meantime a lot of members are playing indoors over the winter. There are the more casual roll-ups four times a week at the clubhouse where teams are drawn from whoever turns up, an internal pairs competition going across the winter, and two teams, Weavers and Spinners, doing well in the Ipswich and District league. This is ‘short-mat bowls’ because it’s played on….well, short mats. Quite a few members prefer the large fulllength indoor rinks – similar to outdoor greens – so carry on playing over at Stowmarket, Sudbury and Ipswich.

Everyone, any age, is welcome to come and just try it out. I can only say as a newish member it’s a lot of fun whatever your ability and people are very welcoming and friendly. If you know a member have a word with them or ring Jan Austin on 01473 828212 and come and give it a try.

A two goal away win at Ipswich Wanderers was a good performance against young opposition. Another win was achieved against Haverhill Borough at the Millfield which was a capable display.

It is good to see our attendances at home matches have increased this season. However, we had a shock at Thetford where nine goals were conceded by Hadleigh. Narrow defeats took place at Coggeshall and against Ely but we were well beaten at Godmanchester.

The Reserves beat Long Melford by seven goals to one while Stowmarket Reserves were held to a draw with the teams scoring one apiece. A splendid win was achieved against Essex side Witham. Our youth team gave a great performance to score eight goals in a big win against Stowmarket Youths at the Millfield. Six of the goals came in the first half.

The goals in that match were shared between four different scorers who all got two apiece. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Mike Vasilica and David Presley. Ground Improvement winner was Matthew Pryor.

HADLEIGH UNITED FIXTURES First team fixtures for Hadleigh United begin at Newmarket on Saturday 6th followed by a home match against Histon on Saturday 13th. Saturday 20th sees us at Wroxham.

The Reserves go to Wivenhoe on Saturday 6th before we travel to Stowmarket in a Cup match on Tuesday 9th. The following Saturday 13th sees our Reserves at Woodbridge before Felixstowe visit the Millfield on Saturday 20th.

The Youth team go to Felixstowe on Thursday 25th.

Our Veterans entertain Coplestonians on Sunday 7th. The Youth league is without fixture for most of January to allow pitches to recover from the winter conditions that usually prevail at this time of the year.

The men members at Stoke by Nayland celebrated Christmas with their annual Yuletide competition followed by Christmas Lunch and a Casino.

It was a cold, crisp morning that greeted the competitors on the Gainsborough Course for a shotgun start to their competition, unfortunately on winter greens because of the frost.

The new Men’s Captain, Alan Line, had organised a team of elves to be at the half way hut with very welcome mulled wine, hot sausage rolls and mince pies.

The winners were last year’s Junior Captain, Matt Thompson and Ian Benson with 50 points. They were presented with Christmas Hampers by the Captain.
