Moving in 2019? Don’t pay twice for conveyancing When you move home, selling and buying property, you will need to employ the services of a conveyancing solicitor to deal with the legal aspects of the transaction, for which there is a legal fee. Paying twice when transactions fall-through What many home movers don’t realise is that if your transaction falls-through, which happens for many reasons and with increasing frequency, you will still be charged by your conveyancing solicitor for the legal work undertaken up to the point the transaction fell-through. This means, you pay legal fees to your conveyancing solicitor for the transaction that fell-through and then have to pay them again for the legal work on the next transaction, which will hopefully be a successful one that goes through to ‘completion’. You essentially pay for your conveyancing twice. How common is it for property transactions to fall-through? Rightmove reports that nearly 30% of property transactions fell-through in 2018*, which is significantly more common than most people realise. Some commentators also believe the current economic uncertainty and slow property market may cause this percentage to increase as buyers and sellers become more cautious and risk-averse, making them more likely to pull-out of a deal. How to avoid paying twice for conveyancing The only way to protect yourself from the risk of paying twice for your conveyancing is to instruct a no sale, no fee conveyancing solicitor. Holmes & Hills Solicitors is proud to protect its conveyancing clients from paying twice by providing its No Sale, No Fee Promise as standard on conveyancing transactions**. Holmes & Hills’ No Sale, No Fee Promise means that should your property transaction fall-through, whether it be a purchase, a sale, or a sale and purchase, you will not pay any of the legal fee quoted to you. When you then find another buyer for your property, or you find another property to buy yourself, you know you have not wasted any money on legal fees on your first, failed transaction. Holmes & Hills clients also benefit from the firm's transaction fall-through rate being significantly lower than the 30% average reported by Rightmove. Why do property transactions fall-through? Property transactions can fallthrough for a wide range of reasons, many of which will be out of your control: • Down-valuations - where a lender values a property lower than the purchase price. • Seller or buyer changes their mind. • Surveys - undertaken buy purchasers these can flag issues with the property. • Disagreements between buyers and sellers. 01787 275275 holmes-hills.co.uk

Lunch Bunch: Corncraft was the venue for Lunch Bunch so there was an opportunity to enjoy some good home cooking and a relaxing fuddle round the various retail outlets near the lunchroom. Curtains: Fidelis joined forces with other users of their monthly meeting place, the Dining Room, to collectively raise sufficient funds to replace the room’s faded curtains. Generous donations came from The Brett Valley Lodge, The Coop Bereavement Group, The Naturalist Society, The Hadleigh Elderly People’s Welfare Group, The Hadleigh Gardening Club and Fidelis. As the room is a community facility, The Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity helped make up the shortfall so that the initiative could proceed. To make the most of the money raised, the readymade curtains were purchased in the Dunelm Mill’s January sales. Our sincere thanks to all involved for their support and generosity enabling future users to enjoy the improvements each time they meet in the Dining Room. JD

Babergh District Council In response to the article that was shared in the Hadleigh Community News last month, Hadleigh Town Council suggested Babergh District Council could provide an update and response to the particular issue of car parking on the former Bridge Street car park. Under the ownership of Babergh District Council, the land to the south of the River Brett within the application boundary, formerly provided car parking for the headquarters and offices of Babergh District Council, located in Corks Lane. The car park provided parking for staff during normal working hours with pedestrian access across the footbridge, which will remain. In addition, and since the relocation of Council services and closure of the offices, the car park has been used informally by members of the public. Following initial review of the Environment Agency maps, it was identified that much of the car park is within flood risk zone 3. This has been supported by substantial anecdotal evidence from helpful members of the community. To inform the redevelopment of the Headquarters site, Babergh District Council instructed a specialist flood risk assessor to undertake extensive detailed preapplication assessment, which has included the computer modelling of the river and its associated flood risk zones, considering future climate change and extreme weather events. This modelling has included identifying the specific boundaries of flood risk zones one, two and three. In addition, the Council has engaged with the Environment Agency throughout pre-application design stages. The planning application for the site’s redevelopment has necessitated this engagement, as the Environment Agency are a statutory consultee of the planning process, and the site is within a flood risk area. This engagement established the Environment Agency’s objection to the future use of the site south of the river for car parking, either for residents or for public use, despite its historic use. The Environment Agency states that their policy is to avoid damage that might be caused by flooding, not only to buildings but to any ‘property’, which includes vehicles. Any planning application applied to this site, regardless of the intended use (residential, offices, commercial, retail, industrial, etc.) would not be permitted to allow car parking on this part of the site, as it would pose a potential risk to people’s property. The proposed 4 new dwellings are situated on the only section of the site that remains outside of flood risk zone 3. This is due to the topography of the site rising away from the river towards the existing Bridge House.

Sunny Day Cycleworks
Winter cycling with Hadleigh Cycling Club
Manual production line workers
Whilst it is tempting to keep the bike in the shed until the Spring or join a spin class, it can be fun and exhilarating to ride outdoors over the Winter. HCC cyclists will be out and about weather permitting. Here are a few handy tips for winter riding: 1 Check the weather. Beware of ice so avoid early mornings and late afternoons if it is forecast. 2 Make sure you’ve got a decent windproof jacket and gloves and waterproofs if showers are expected. 3 You’ll need a set of lights if you’re out early doors or after 4pm. Don’t buy the cheapest. 4 Mudguards are handy if you’re riding in a group. 5 There are tyres which are virtually puncture-proof and they are definitely worth the investment. 6 Get your bike serviced. The Club has been supported by Sunny Day Cycleworks and The Pedal House and we would recommend them both. Finally, protect yourself at all times. Dates for the diary: Subs’ night - Friday, 8th March, Gayford Flyer - Sunday, 15th September (provisional). Why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 9am, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. Visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Hadleigh family raise money for St Elizabeth Hospice over Christmas St Elizabeth Hospice has played a huge part in Hadleigh Resident Gill Knight’s life over the past year. Her husband Kevin Knight sadly passed away at the Ipswich Hospice on the 10th January 2018 from the Leukaemia he bravely fought for over 2 years. The Hospice gave Kev the chance to spend his last Christmas at home with Gill and the family, giving her peace of mind that help was just a phone call away. Gill and the family were asked to become the face of the hospice’s ‘Coming Home for Christmas’ campaign for 2018 which involved a stint on Radio Suffolk telling her story which was used on social media, all mailings and all over the Internet. Gill and family raised over £2000 towards the Hospices’ target to raise funds to support dying patients in their wish for one last Christmas at home. Never ones to shy away from a challenge Gill and the family also took part in the ‘Felixstowe Christmas Dip’ on Christmas morning also organised by St Elizabeth Hospice. Although we no longer have Kev it felt good to give something back to an organisation who had done so much for Kev and his family. We would like to thank everybody who donated to this fantastic cause and supported Gill and Kev’s son Pete over the last year
Hadleigh Community Transport Group The 90 service will soon come under review – Suffolk County Council have some difficult decisions to make over the next few months and at this point we do not know what will happen. In the mean time – please keep using our services – the more support we get the more likely they are to continue. The 796 early morning and evening return journey to Manningtree station is useful for commuters and travellers saving the cost of car parking (if you can find a space). The 461 to Stowmarket serves the villages of Elmsett and Whatfield enabling residents to get into Hadleigh or Stowmarket. The Connecting Communities transport covers a wider area and journeys can be pre-booked. For further details see our website bus@hadleigh.org or give us a call 01473 826242.

When I started out in December 2010, I never thought that launching a local history magazine for the town of Hadleigh and its surrounding countryside would keep me busy for so long.I have not reached the 50th issue all by myself and I would like to thank all the contributors for their hard work and for what is currently in the pipeline. I also have to thank Kelvin Avis and his team for the very eye-catching cover that they have produced for this special occasion. As am not out to make a profit, just trying to cover costs of production and sale, the price has been maintained for eight years but from this issue, it will be ÂŁ4. I hope you feel that the magazine is worth the extra. There are still lots of interesting subjects to write about so The Hadleigh Historian may even make 100! Looking back over previous issues, I have picked out four discoveries as being of particular interest: the full extent of Hadleigh’s medieval street pattern; the location of the Manor of Hadleighs in Hadleigh and its manor house being Peyton Hall; the site of the market shambles; and the whereabouts of William Smith’s charity chest. For anyone interested in Hadleigh Railway, the book The Hadleigh Branch (2006) by Peter Paye is an excellent guide. However, in ‘A dreadful accident at Hadleigh Railway Station’, events of Thursday 16 September 1847 are investigated further. Nearly 500 people had gathered on the platform for an excursion to Ipswich Regatta, when suddenly some were thrown wounded and bleeding upon the line of rails [while] others were completely buried in the ruins. Find out what caused this catastrophe, which severely affected several Hadleigh inhabitants for the remainder of their lives. Continuing ‘The Hadleigh was a Borough 400 years ago’, cases are related that appeared before local magistrates at the Seeions of the Peace including prosecuting against illegal tippling houses, unlicensed brewing and selling of beer and for involvement in unlawful games such as quoits, bowls, cards, dice, football and tennis. Richard Conny was the most notorious and truculent inhabitant as he fought all over town and frequently found himself in the lockup awaiting trial as a common brawler and public disturber. Susanna Byrde was a scold and scandalmonger causing strife amongst her neighbours, while Susanna Kemp, landlady at the Kings’s Arms in Benton Street, was sent for trial at Bury St Edmunds for allowing all sorts of high jinks. As the Hadleigh Historian is printed at No. 68 High Street, I thought I would look into the people living and working there since the premises became a newsagents shop and printing works over two hundred years ago. The first family was the Hardacres, who turned out to be such interesting people that their story is told over three issues. In issue 50, we meet the wool-comber who brought the family to Hadleigh; the first stationer and printer; a man who foiled a conspiracy to blow up the Houses of Parliament; a composer and musician who played in concerts at St Paul’s Cathedral; and a man who thought he had made his way in life by marrying ‘an amiable and accomplished lady with a handsome fortune’ but still ended up bankrupt. Issue 50 (February-March 2019) is available at Keith Avis Newsagents and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price ÂŁ4. Sue Andrews (01449) 740673

The DIY Deli Pickled pears Pears preserved in this way make an excellent accompaniment to cured meats and smoked cheeses. Essential equipment 1. Two pans - one capable of holding 10 litres; the other 6 2. A slotted or perforated spoon 3. Sufficient jars with well-fitting lids to hold 3 kg of finished product – Kilner jars are ideal but there is nothing wrong with recycled jam jars as long as they are clean Ingredients 4 kg unripe Conference pears, 1.5 kg granulated sugar, 1 litre white wine vinegar, 1 cinnamon stick, 5 whole cloves. Note – don’t use ground spices – you will end up with a cloudy syrup Method 1. Break the cinnamon into three pieces & place in a muslin bag together with the cloves; tie the top securely 2. Place the vinegar in the 10 litre pan; add the sugar & spices & heat slowly, stirring frequently, until all the sugar has dissolved; bring to the boil and set aside 3. Peel the pears, quarter & core – halve if they are small 4. Place the pears in the 6 litre pan with just enough water to cover; bring to the boil & simmer for 1 hour 5. Drain the pears & add them to the spiced vinegar syrup; simmer until they are translucent, and the flesh feels tender to the skewer test; this can take up to an hour 6. Sterilise the jars by placing them in a pre-heated oven at 120ºC for 10 minutes; using oven gloves place on a protective surface 7. Remove the pears from the syrup with a slotted or perforated spoon & pack into the jars, being careful not to allow too much unused space 8. Remove the spices & boil the liquid until it is reduced to a thick syrup 9. Pour the syrup over the pears ensuring there is no air in the jar and the pears are completely covered; cover & seal 10. Leave for at least one month before eating Storage The product will keep for up to 2 years without detriment

Hadleigh Walkers Our February walk will be on Saturday 9th and is a 9 mile circular route starting and ending at the Limeburners pub on the Ipswich Road in Offton (IP8 4SF). We will meet at 0930 in the pub car park and then follow a clockwise route of Castle Fm, Court Fm, Pigeon Hall Fm, Does’s Fm, Tollemache Hall, Tollemache Hall Grove, Long Meadow, Willisham Hall, Rook Hill Fm and back to the Limeburners. This is about a 4 hour walk and covers ground we don’t usually visit. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Our March walk will also be a new one for us and will be an 8 mile circular walk starting from the Lamarsh Lion a newly refurbished community pub just North of Bures. More details to follow of this surprisingly hilly Essex walk that encompasses rivers, woods and views over the Stour valley. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658.

Beaumont Community Primary School What a fantastic start we have had to the New Year, the children have been so busy! Firstly we were very proud to receive a letter from James Cartlidge MP. The letter was congratulating the school for achieving the greatest gain out of any school in the South Suffolk constituency for the proportion of pupils achieving the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics in KS2. The school increased from 20% in 2017 to 75%in 2018, we are immensely proud of our achievement. The children started the year learning all about the famous Mathematician Fibonacci and applying his mathematics to their art projects. The children have also enjoyed dressing up as characters from the books they are reading in class. Open Mornings We will be holding open mornings on the 26th March 2019 and the 25 June 2019. Please feel free to come and visit our wonderful school and see the school day in action. Call us on 01473 825120 and we will be happy to answer any questions.
Nic Carter - Community Based Personal Trainer Hello and a happy New Year to you all. I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and that your new year is blessed with much happiness and good fortune. At this time of year most of us make New Year resolutions which can be related to our health, wellbeing and fitness. More often than not though these resolutions don’t last, and we can end up going back to our old habits, even before the month of January is out. In order to ensure that you can make resolutions that are achievable and that will last, take smaller steps to reaching your bigger outcomes. Whatever your end goal is, break this down into smaller chunks, i.e. short, medium and long term goals. After all, an elephant can only be eaten one bite at a time (metaphorically speaking). For example, you could aim to reach your long term goal in 3 months and this could be something like, “I would like to reduce my body fat % by 5% and increase my fitness levels”. To make this more achievable, your short term goal (within 4 weeks) could be, “I will have a PT session once a week”. Your medium term goal (within 8 weeks) could be, “I will have a PT session once a week, run twice a week and aim to lower my body fat % by 2%”. By your final 4 week block, as your fitness routine has become embedded, your final goal to ensure your body fat % has decreased by 5% can be achieved, alongside your increasing fitness levels.
To support you to achieve your New Year resolutions, I am offering a free personal training taster session and then 5 sessions for £115 throughout January! My sessions are bespoke to you and will be tailored to your goals and outcomes. T: 07886 124 698 E: nic@niccarterpt.co.uk Instagram: nic.carter_pt Facebook: Nic Carter PT

‘Michael Buble’ to appear at Hadleigh Nursing Home... Support worker Stewart Ashfield will undergo a Stars in their Eyes transformation to perform as Michael Buble at Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, from 10.30am to noon on Thursday, February 14. (Valentine’s Day). Having already wowed residents with his vocal talents he will now be looking to impress the public at the Kingsley Healthcare home’s first monthly coffee morning. Mr Ashfield, 25, who lives in Hadleigh, worked as a carer for people with learning disabilities for six years before joining the staff at Hadleigh Nursing Home five months ago. He said: “I have always loved to sing alongside my care work and already have nearly 20 gigs booked for this year. “I have a broad repertoire, from Frank Sinatra right through to Ed Sheeran, but will be focusing on Michael Buble for our first coffee morning.” Home manager Tracey Burt said: “We are lucky to have so much talent in our home. As well as Stewart, our administrator Esther Pemberton sings in a gospel group, Ipswich International Church Choir, and she has promised they will perform for us in the near future.” The coffee morning, the Hadleigh Coffee Club, will be held at the same time on the second Thursday of every month. Mrs Burt said: “In future months, we will be inviting local speakers to come along to the events to address topics we hope will be of interest to the wider community as well as older people. “It’s important for our residents to still feel part of their community so we really appreciate the public attending our events.”
Hadleigh Choral Society Spring Concert Hadleigh Choral Society’s Spring Concert is a performance of the St John Passion by J. S. Bach. The text of this great choral work is the account of Christ’s crucifixion, as written in the gospel according to St John. Traditionally this was read out in churches on Good Friday. The detail of the story is told in the work by the soloists, The Evangelist, Christ, Pilate and others, whilst the choir is the crowd of angry officials and onlookers baying for Jesus’s blood. There are plenty of dramatic and fiery choruses from the choir, reflective arias from the soloists, and wonderful melodic accompaniment from the orchestra. St John Passion is famous for it’s majestic chorales. These are simple melodies similar to hymn tunes which are magnificently harmonised for the choir, and comment on the unfolding story. Members of the Society are rehearsing hard for the occasion, the music is challenging and there are lots of notes to be learnt! An extra challenge is that we are singing the work in the original German, which is quite foreign to most of us. However, with tutoring from native German-speakers in the choir, and expert training from our Music Director, Chris Phelps, we hope to give an inspiring performance come concert day! The concert takes place in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on Saturday 6th April at 7.30pm. Tickets priced at £14 (under 25s free) are available through the website www.hadleighchoralsociety.org.uk and from Choir members. Contact: Liz Turnbull 01473 823791

Making Your Will - Again A big thank you to our wonderful clients (over 800 at the last count) whom we have been pleased to advise through the Will Business since I established the company some ten years ago. From that beginning, the plan was to help local people - within an easy bike ride to their homes from my base at Polstead - with their wills and lasting powers of attorney at very competitive prices. That is what has happened, although the bike has been overtaken by the car because we get so busy. This year, we think that major changes are likely on the financial planning front, with inheritance tax, lasting powers of attorney and the cost of care being three of the main considerations. It will also be important for families to think about ways they might be able to help the next generation through the uncertain times ahead. We can help with that. We will review (at no charge) any wills which we have written for clients. Our advice on what might be done next will be charged at a competitive rate (and without VAT while we continue to be exempt as a small business). Despite the ‘client count’ mentioned above, we always welcome new clients, who will enjoy just the same level of care and attention as our existing clients.

Hadleigh Community Primary School Nursery Class - Forest School Earlier this week, the Duchess of Cambridge, who was visiting the King Henry’s Walk Garden to see how its brings members of the local community together through gardening and growing food, was quoted saying: “I think that’s where George and Charlotte would love to be. Learning outside the classroom, not inside. It’s still fun inside but it’s much better outside.” At Hadleigh Community Primary School we run a forest-school Nursery Class, undertaking activities in our wooded area everyday and in all weathers. Our parents think its wonderful and have told us: - “She loves Nursery, especially the woods sessions, always showing how muddy she has got!” - “He loves to be outdoors.” - “We really like the outdoor aspect of the Nursery.” Please contact the school office for further information or if you would like to view our Nursery. Music We had a very festive end to our autumn term with our Key Stage 2 Carol Service in St Mary’s Church. It was a community event where the children really enjoyed performing to a large congregation with readers, actors, singing and instrumental players. All pupils from Nursery to Year 6 are now looking forward to their weekly class music lessons in the spring term where they can appreciate a variety of musical learning and ways to ‘BE THE BEST THEY CAN BE!’ BREAKING NEWS!!! Our choir have been asked to premiere a new song by Paul Sartin of the well-known band Bellowhead. The performance will be at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on Monday, 4th March as part of the Celebration of Schools’ Music. We are extremely excited to have been chosen and are very much looking forward to the event. Sport On Thursday 6th December 2018, we took 18 of our Year 5/6 pupils to compete in the Indoor Sportshall Athletics event at Westbourne Academy. There were 11 schools in total at this competition. Each athlete took part in four events, ranging from sprints, long distance running, jumping events, obstacle races and throwing events. As there were over 250 children competing in the same sportshall, the atmosphere was immense! After an enjoyable afternoon of events, Hadleigh CPS finished 3rd which was fantastic. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part! The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme which was launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the Mark. We as a school decided we wanted to apply and achieve the Gold Kitemark Award this year. After filling in the application criteria using last year's success in sport, we are thrilled to say we have been awarded the Gold School Games Award for a forth year in a row! This would not be possible without all the hard work and dedication towards sport at HCPS by Mr Peters and Mr Daniels. A big thankyou to Ali Furlong for coming into assembly and awarding our school with this great achievement.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre We were very proud to have been featured across the front page of the Hadleigh Community News in January, so everyone will know what a special year this is for the Shelley Centre and the RDA as a whole. The RDA is in effect a Federation of some 500 small independent groups, such as The Shelley Centre, and currently supports over 26,500 adults and children by providing riding, carriage driving and vaulting each year. Our President, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, is a great supporter of RDA, championing our work as a national charity and keeping us in the public eye. In Sept 1979 Hadleigh RDA Group started at Frog Hall in Hadleigh so we could celebrate 40 years of being your local RDA branch, but when Mike and Jane Crow generously rented us land in Shelley we moved. The purpose-built Shelley Centre opened for business in 1989, so that is the anniversary we shall be celebrating here this year. Please, if you have a spare morning or afternoon each week of the school term, do come and work here! Every new volunteer enables us to move somebody up the waiting list for the therapy we provide. Many of our riders require three volunteers to support them, either leading their pony, or walking beside them to give them security and help. Expert training is provided, and its very rewarding work. Babs and I live indoors and get used as much as the outdoor herd, but we still need volunteers to participate in our sessions, so if you want to keep warm and dry, “apply within.” My photo shows Bob being cuddled up by Lindsay, one of our able bodied riders who helps keep the horses fit. He’s a lucky fellow. All the horses and ponies look for stimulation from these able bodied team members; a horses’s working day means many circuits of our arena in the lessons, so they much look forward to being taken out in the countryside for a good workout. Talking of workouts, there is scope for you to join our maintenance team and help on the land. Much more interesting than gym membership, I hear! Local Christmas Draw raises over £2,000 for charity Christmas came early for twelve lucky people, as one of the biggest regional hearing care companies held its annual charity Christmas Prize Draw. The Hearing Care Centre, which has a centre locally at Sudbury Community Health Centre, organised the draw in support of deafness charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, giving entrants the chance to win a prize bundle of over £1,000 – the top prizes being a luxury stay at The Swan in Southwold and a meal for two at Gordon Ramsay’s Maze restaurant in Mayfair. Through face-to-face ticket sales and donations on the company’s Just Giving page, The Hearing Care Centre managed to raise £2,083. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People delivers expert training for Hearing Dogs which provides invaluable emotional support to their deaf recipient. New found owners gain confidence, independence and companionship. The Christmas Prize Draw received generous support from local businesses – Coes, Fred Olsen, Dulux, Salthouse Harbour Hotel, Theatre Royal Norwich and Archant, as well as from hearing solution providers Phonak, Sivantos, Oticon and GN Hearing. Karen Finch, Managing Director and founder of The Hearing Care Centre, expressed: “This prize draw just goes to show the power of our community, with support not only from the general public but also from local businesses, we can all be proud of this fantastic total, which will make a huge difference to Hearing Dogs’ work”. This year to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary, The Hearing Care Centre pledged to raise £20,000 for the charity and this was one of the last of many events held this year to meet this ambitious target. Final totals are currently being calculated but such wonderful support from the local community means this target is definitely within sight. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Whatever happens to Britain as it leaves the EU, there is one thing on which we can surely all agree. To compete in our new role, we will need to have the best possible tools to do the job. The long term deal we eventually negotiate with the EU will obviously be a key part of that, but domestic measures not directly related to Brexit will be just as crucial, and near the top of the agenda must surely be better infrastructure. In Suffolk, that must mean improving our most critical road – the A14. At the end of January I was pleased to host a Parliamentary reception for the ‘No More Delays’ initiative from the A14 Strategy Board chaired by Mark Pendlington. The campaign is led by the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and highlights the need for national investment into improvements on the A14. A key part of our argument to Government is that a better A14 would not just benefit Suffolk or the East of England, this is a key national artery that is the premier trade route for shipping freight access to our nation from around the world. It has been estimated that reducing delays on the A14 could unlock an additional £1.5 billion in the UK economy by unleashing the true potential of the Port of Felixstowe. The campaign is calling for a series of works in two categories: improvements to key junctions at Ipswich, Bury, St Edmunds and Newmarket; and major maintenance schemes on the A14 between Haughley and Woolpit, and between Copdock and the Orwell Bridge. These works would address the terrible Copdock interchange, which sits in my constituency and which all Suffolk MPs recognise must be a top priority for upgrading. Of course, if every one of our demands was met, it’s not as if there would never be another delay on the A14. But, aside from all the key points about economic growth, we would ultimately want to make the driving experience a little more bearable, with a road fit for purpose. Basically, we want to see our county get its fair share of road investment.

Ultimate Tooley Simon and I are SO glad they named a celestial body after my mum, Pleione Tooley. (Think about it!) Whether you knew her from church, Memories Café, Together Tuesday or visits to charity shops or eateries in Hadleigh, she was a character and fitted beautifully into her surroundings. Pleione (always tricky to spell and even harder to pronounce!) died on Monday 7th January 2019 at the ripe young age of 92 ¾. We would like to thank the lovely community that is Hadleigh for their kind thoughts and wishes of support. For the gardeners and plant lovers amongst you, my grandfather was the plant hunter Frank Kingdon-Ward and he brought back the Pleione orchid from the Himalayas. Sarah Thompson

Thursday 17th February, 2019 Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson (Hadleigh North Ward) Firstly, may I take this opportunity of wishing everyone a Happy New Year. An interesting year in prospect for everyone at all levels of Government – national and local! Angel Court The proposed Angel Court development is due to go to Planning Committee on 23rd January. Joint Local Plan/Private Sector Housing The new Joint Local Plan (this identifies potential sites for private housing in the Districts and carries weight) has slipped by about 6 months. A public consultation on the new draft Local Plan will take place after the 2019 elections in May, when the new Ward arrangements will also be in place (32 Wards rather than 43) with the intention of taking it to for full Council approval in July 2019. The delay has been caused by failures beyond our control to provide substantive information on funding for, Infrastructure requirements, Education (school extension) requirements, NHS surgery (extensions) requirements The new Plan must be deliverable, it’s not just a dream sheet, if it’s to get inspector approval and the anticipated implementation date is now early 2020. Disposal of Corks Lane Buildings The recommendation for redevelopment of the old Babergh Council offices (about 56 houses/flats) was due to go before the Planning Committee in December 18, but is postponed to February 19. It was approved by Babergh Council (details still commercial in confidence) in early December 18 but I can reveal that it will be developed in partnership with another agency that’s experienced in these matters. The Budget Whilst still manageable, you should be aware that Babergh DC faces a particularly challenging period in 2020/21. This has been caused in the main but the failure of developers to build the houses that we have approved at the Planning Committee and a resultant loss of anticipated New Homes Bonus payable by Central Government. To enable Babergh to submit a balanced budget in 2019/20 you should not be surprised to see a 2% increase in Council tax. By far the biggest increase will be in the County (+care) and Crime & Police sectors. Car Parking Charges Please ignore any press cuttings (generated by the Labour Group) that tell you that the Administration in Babergh plans to introduce parking charges. Currently there are none. Cancellation of Brown Bin Charges You may have seen that the Babergh Labour Group (of 2) has called for free brown bins garden waste facilities. This will not happen. It’s a popular facility that’s optional and costs lie where they fall. You might wish to know that it’s an indicative £800K contract with Serco that would require a huge increase in Council taxes if the service were to be provided free of charge. Finally, you will wish to be aware that the current Serco waste disposal contract is about to be extended for a further seven years. This has been shown to offer best value for money, especially as some new “incentive” (penalty for non-delivery) clauses have been added to the new contract. Dated 15th January, 2019

Hadleigh Evening W.I. January was cheered up for us W.I. members by a very amusing and exciting Talk by Bridget Keevil of Travel Agency, ‘Travel Stop’. By chance, an attractive poster caught her eye in the London Underground. It was advertising a Round-the-world Clipper Race and it's slogan was, ‘Achieve Something Remarkable’! Inspired by these words, Bridget, a non-sailor, after only 4 weeks' training around the Isle of Wight and 1 crossing to France, set sail in August 2015, from St, Katherine's Dock in London, to travel for 11 months around the World and across every ocean, on a 7 foot yacht. In the midst of great fun and team spirit, Bridget described some unpleasant, hazardous and traumatic experiences. She described how jobs, including cooking, had to be done on a yacht that mostly rolled and lurched as it was buffeted by strong winds and huge waves. With 10 bunks for a crew of 20, following a system of 4 hours on duty and 4 hours off, enduring endless water everywhere, sleep was a hard won commodity. The trip was done in a series of ‘legs’, each lasting a few weeks, during which time there was no showering and no hair- washing. Despite the many challenges, Bridget managed, in between jobs, to keep a Blog going about the trip. Her Blog was followed by 32,853 people in 94 different countries! Incidentally, while in Australia, they won the famous Sydney to Hobart Race! It was while traversing 6,000 miles of the Pacific Ocean, that the ship was badly damaged in a storm and had to withdraw from the Race. Bridget, also badly injured, had to have an operation in a hospital in Seattle. The ship, now repaired, went on to New York but Bridget was not fit enough to rejoin it. However, she finally caught up with the ship in Derry and she joined it for the victory sail under Tower Bridge and back to St. Katherine's Dock. Bridget described the Trip as the best experience of her life. What a Heroine! At the end of our meeting we had to say ,’Goodbye’ to Ann Young as she will be leaving Hadleigh for Hertfordshire next month. Ann has been a member since 1985 and she has been very active in different roles including, Treasurer and President, as well as hosting our Annual Garden Party on several occasions. She will be greatly missed and we would like to wish Ann and her husband lots of happiness in their new home. Next month our talk will be,’My Grandmother, a Suffragette’ by Chrissie Scott. Rotary Club Of Hadleigh Diary Christmas Collections: Once again the collections were a great success and a grand total of £1914.00 was raised with the House to House providing £1285.06 including a donation of £50 whilst 2 collections in Morrisons Car Park brought in £628.94. No records were broken this year but everyone was very generous and the float was warmly welcomed wherever it went. As always Father Christmas was kept very busy seeing a large number of children. Of course this event does not just happen and in addition to members of the Club a small band of loyal helpers are involved every year. Surprisingly, perhaps, once a person has been out on one of the collections they are keen to do it again - maybe it is the look of joy and sometimes wonder on the childrens' faces. A big thank you goes to all of them : firstly the men in red who work very hard - Richard Whiting, Fred Creed, John Robinson, Simon Carter, Trev Clarke and David Walmsley. The additional collectors were Claire Coster, Kerry Carter, Richard Cooley, Hazel Cooley, Harry Wilkinson and George Wyatt. Towing duties were shared between Gary Hambling of Hambling Utility Services and Simon Foster of Crockatt Garage who both were very generous with their time. Hadleigh Bowling Club kindly allowed the float to be stored at the green during the collection period whilst Martin Pratt keeps the vehicle safe at his farm for the rest of the year. The funds have already been distributed between the following local charities and organisations: St Elizabeth Hospice, Arthur Gaell Trust local apprentice scheme, Independent Age Suffolk, Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee, Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding, Hadleigh Guides and Beaumont Primary School. On behalf of these charities the Rotary Club thanks the people of Hadleigh and district for their generosity. Club Events: Champagne Brunch - the Club's traditional Saturday brunch meeting with partners and friends took place on the first Saturday of the New Year and as usual was very well attended with everyone enjoying a breakfast of their choice washed down with a glass of sparkling wine. The management and staff of the George at Hintlesham looked after us very well indeed and a big thank you goes to them. This event always starts the year off with a swing. Special General Meeting: This was held at the beginning of January to confirm the appointment of President 2019/20 - Richard Whiting, and to elect Vice President 2019/20 - Linda Humphries, Hon Secretary - Glenn Abbassi, Hon Treasurer - Ian Burne. 41st Charter Lunch: The lunch was a great success last year and some guests expressed the wish to attend again so this is advance notice that it will be held at The Swan Hotel, Lavenham as usual on Thursday 28 February. Invitations are going out but any one interested in attending may obtain details from any Rotary Member. Membership: Members welcome Hazel Cooley as our 15th member and hope that she will thoroughly enjoy Rotary. The Club is now close to doubling membership from 2 years ago but would very much like to reach at least 20 members within another 2 years - Maybe YOU could be one of those new members. Why not pop along to a meeting to find out more tel David 01473 827226 or Linda 07905 061399.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029
Thank you to the many supporters who sent gifts and money for the animals over Christmas, too many to mention but you know who you are. We also met lots of lovely people and their dogs during the Santa Paws appeal at Pets at Home in Colchester. The other morning I was very surprised when Mother went out on a rescue and returned looking as black as Ollie the cat! Apparently she had to dislodge a tawny owl from a very sooty chimney, after which they both needed a bath. One of our volunteers was later left red faced after commenting upon the delightful soft tones of the rescued owl. She was most embarrassed when told the owl was elsewhere and the cooing was a recovering collared dove! We are now open again so do visit us if you are looking for furry friend to complete your family. Although you can see some of our animals on the website there may new arrivals and it’s always good to have a chat in person. You may even be lucky enough to see me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua! Sixty reasons to celebrate... Hadleigh Swimming Club have sixty reasons to celebrate as this is the impressive number of County Championship Qualifying times achieved by just seventeen swimmers in this small local club, showing it is well and truly on the up. Head Coach, Mick Evans, explained that this time last year, the club had attained twenty-five qualifying times, building on the seven times achieved in 2017. He said it was testament to the dedication of the swimmers and their families, as well as the commitment of the coaching team which had cemented their success. The delighted swimmers, who range in age from just 10 to 21 years, celebrated their achievement with a trip the Olympic Pool in Stratford to train in the place where their idols have achieved great things. The trip, arranged by the coaching team and committee, was a chance for the swimmers to bond, enjoying time together away from regular training sessions and competition. Lee Abbott, Assistant Coach added: “It’s great to give our swimmers the chance to train in a 50-metre pool – it’s a shame we have to travel so far to do it.” The extra training is bound to come in handy when they attend the Suffolk ASA County Championships, which take place at Crown Pools each February, culminating in team relays, which are definitely a high point of the meet. Hadleigh Swimming Club, who train four times a week at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure won’t be resting on their laurels though, a full programme of training and competition has been planned as swimmers set their sights on achieving challenging times for next year’s County Champs and onward. Did you know, you can donate to Hadleigh Swimming Club without it costing you a single penny? Simply download the Easy Fundraising app, join our cause and go through this to hundreds of online stores including Amazon, Argos, John Lewis and M & S. Each time you go through this app to make a purchase, the retailer makes a donation to our club with no cost to you. If you’re already thinking about your Summer holiday, many travel agents are also on the app and this would raise a considerable donation. Suffolk County Councillor - Mick Fraser Hadleigh Traffic Management Working Group (HTMWG) I am in the process of re-forming the HTMWG to aid me in identifying our Highways issues and so that we can work alongside SCC officers in order to best resolve them. This working group was disbanded some ten years ago, but I believe it would be an appropriate platform again now in these challenging times for a collective approach to help solving our local roads, footpaths and other highways issues in these challenging times. Previously this WG was chaired by the Hadleigh SCC councillor and consisted of Town and District councillors, SCC and BDC officers, a Suffolk Constabulary SNT representative, and members from some of Hadleigh’s organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Hadleigh Society. The same WG manning might not now be appropriate, since our challenges now are different: Benton Street continues to be a problem, the pothole situation is worsening, road signs aren’t being cleaned as frequently, or verges being cut back adequately. So that will need looking at as will its previous 2006 constitution, which is outdated and will need to be rewritten. I need help with this WG and I would really appreciate the input from a number of residents who might like to assist in addressing our highways issues. Please contact me if you would like to join me in this working group, which I suggest might meet on a quarterly basis. Hadleigh Schools It is very pleasing to announce that Beaumont Community Primary School received a GOOD grading from Ofsted in their October report from their Full Inspection carried out last September. This is a significant improvement over the School’s previous two ‘Requires Improvement’ reports. Congratulations to Mayleen Atima and all the staff, governors and children for this achievement; keep up the good work. St Mary’s C of E Primary School maintained their GOOD rating following their Ofsted Short Inspection of November 2018. Well done also to Andrew Frolish and his staff, governors and children for their hard work. This means that all Hadleigh schools now hold a GOOD Ofsted rating, which is very encouraging. Benton Street Closures Benton Street was due to be closed for planned utility works during the week leading up to Christmas, which would have been incredibly inconvenient to businesses on the High Street and their customers. I managed to persuade Suffolk Highways to have these postponed until the New Year; which they were. There were further works last month when utilities were being put in for the new housing development close by Priory Hall. Again, these were inconvenient for our businesses and other travellers, but to their credit, Suffolk Highways coordinated the Water, Gas and BT Openreach utilities works together for the one-time closure. Roads Repairs I have submitted numerous fault reports, alongside those of other residents, regarding the large potholes at the junction of Duke St / High St; the loose and broken paving slabs along George St, outside the RBL club; and the loose paving slabs adjacent to the Mile Stone on George St. I am pleased to report that Suffolk Highways should be attending to these issues within the next four weeks. Whilst this winter remains relatively mild and dry, can I please encourage you to continue submitting roads fault reports to Suffolk Highways so that issues such as potholes might be rectified before they worsen. Highways faults can be reported at: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/ or by telephone on: 0345 606 6171. My monthly surgery is held on the third Saturday of the month in the Sharron Elliott room of the Royal British Legion Club, George St. The next one will be on Saturday 16th February, 11am – 12pm. Should you need to contact me with an issue then please contact me at email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh

Remembering Hadleigh’s Great War In this article we remember: Albert Charles John Baker 28 January 1920 William John Leeks 13 March 1920 Thomas Salmon 20 July 1920 Herbert Mark Chaplings Kirk 25 December 1920 Walter Charles Rudd 16 February 1921 This is the 55th and final monthly article from the ‘Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project.’ Since the summer of 2014, the project has documented the part played by Hadleigh during the Great War. The project continues and findings will still be published to the project’s website. Additionally, work is underway to bring all the discoveries together in book form; ‘Remembering Hadleigh’s Great War’ which it is hoped will be published later this year. Five of Hadleigh’s former soldiers died in the years 1920/21 and all are buried in Hadleigh Cemetery. Private Albert Charles John Baker was born in George Street in 1898. He enlisted into the Suffolk Regiment in May 1915 giving his age as 19, although he was actually only 16. He was sent to France with the 7th Battalion in December 1917 and wounded the following May. He received a gun shot wound to his leg and arm and was sent home. He was medically discharged in October 1918 and returned to work as a stockman on a local farm. He died at the family home at 19 Long Bessels fifteen months later of tuberculosis, aged 21. Private William John Leeks was born in Hadleigh in 1893 and was living in The Green in 1901. In 1913 he was employed by Arthur Wright of the Long Bessels Bakery where he learnt dough making skills. In November 1915 he was tested by the Army Service Corps

This brings the number of Hadleigh men released from the forces up to fifty three. Fred Holmes [Benton Street], late of the Grenadier Guard, is back again with the London City Police force. He is another of the old boys who has obtained distinction by winning the Military Medal. Wed 26 Feb Corporal Bertie Allen, 1st King’s Own Lancashire Regiment, desires to receive his D.C.M. and 1914 Star in his native town and it is hoped that arrangements can be made for the presentation to take place here. (ASC) Bakery and proved himself to be a ‘3rd Hand Baker.’ He was then enlisted into the ASC on 5 November 1915 and on Christmas Day 1916 he sailed for overseas service on the Salonika Front, where the austere conditions provided the greatest threat to life. Here he remained until July 1919 and was demobilised on 8 August, returning to live with his widowed father at number 2 The Green. His brother Cecil Claud Leeks, who served with the 1/5th Suffolks in Palestine had been medically discharged from war service and died of tuberculosis two months before William’s return. In March 1920 William contracted enteric fever, a form of typhoid fever and also died. Today the two Leeks brothers lie close to each other in Hadleigh Cemetery. Private Thomas Salmon was born in Edwardstone in 1876, married Bessie Ermine Baker of Onehouse in 1898 and moved to Stone Street, Hadleigh in 1900. In the 1901 census he described himself as an Assurance Agent. In 1911, he was still in Stone Street working as a general labourer. It is likely that he enlisted under the Lord Derby scheme and was mobilised in mid 1916. One year later he was serving with the 1st Suffolks in Salonika, from where he wrote home in July 1917 telling that ‘the climate is a trying one and a man wants a strong constitution to be able to stick it’ and that one day he found ‘a snake curled up in his mosquito netting.’ In June 1918 he was in hospital suffering from malarial fever, he appeared to recover and was discharged from the army in April 1919. He died the next year aged 44 at home in Stone Street. The cause of death being recorded as malaria. His son Victor Kenneth also served in the Great War and when his wife Bessie died in 1960, she was buried with Thomas at Hadleigh Cemetery. Corporal Herbert Mark Chaplings Kirk was born at East Dereham in 1872. In 1891 he was serving with the 5th Kings Royal Rifles billeted a Huntingdon and later served in the Boer War. In 1905 he married Caroline Parker from Hadleigh and in 1911 was living in Wells, Norfolk and working as a groom. It seems likely that they returned to Hadleigh because in September 1914 Herbert Kirk enlisted with the 5th Suffolk territorials and opted for overseas service. He was in Gallipoli in August 1915 as a Lance Corporal. After the evacuation of the Peninsula in December he was with the battalion in Egypt and moved to the Royal Army Medical Corps, but was invalided back to England in March 1916. His health issues continued and in June 1917 it was reported that he had been at Shoreham to ‘re-establish his health’ and where he had been doing duty as a cook, Shortly after that he was transferred to the Royal Sussex Regiment and returned to the front, then in March 1918 he was in hospital again and when discharged in June 1919 he was serving with the Labour Corps. He died on Christmas Day 1920 at the East Suffolk Hospital, Ipswich of heart disease and pneumonia; he was aged 48. Sergeant Walter Charles Rudd was born in 1878 the son of a butcher living in George Street. He also took up the trade of butcher but at the age of almost 19 enlisted in London with the 1st Royal Dragoons, before be transferred to the 9th (Queens Royal) Lancers. In September 1898 he was sent abroad and spent almost 9 years in India and South Africa. He was awarded both the Queen's and King’s South Africa medal, with seven clasps. He completed his service in 1909 and set himself up as a butcher at 54 High Street, He married the Hadleigh police inspector’s daughter in 1911. When war broke out in 1914 he re-enlisted with his old regiment and served throughout the Great War. In June 1919 he re-attested whilst in Cologne and his regiment returned to England in September 1919. In May 1920 the regiment was sent to Longford, Ireland on active service during the Irish War of Independence. It was here in June 1921 that he died of self-inflicted wounds and his body was returned to Hadleigh. His name was never included on the CWGC Roll of Honour and he never received a CWGC headstone, probably because of the nature of his death. His grave was lost and he was forgotten until the ‘In From The Cold’ project spotted this discrepancy. The Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project have managed to find the lost grave of Walter Rudd and the CWGC have approved and made a new CWGC headstone which will be installed on the grave in the coming weeks. Time for a change After years of training dressage, my passion for horses has died. They had become a chore – that was it, time for a change! But what to do? I am a 36 year old woman who had spent her life dedicated to horses. How do you find a new career having had such a specific skill set? I had always been interested in fixing things and managing the maintenance of my yard myself and I am good with people. I enjoyed going out of my way for my clients, giving them the ability to enjoy their horses to the max without having to do any of the daily grind. I am fit and certainly not put off by a bit of dirt or hardwork. I wanted a career that was going to be useful and portable. I also wanted to be able to give something back. A group of female plumbers ‘Stop Cocks’ organise water projects around the world, what an amazing opportunity to travel with purpose. So after a lot of time analysing my strengths and weaknesses, my interests and what I wanted from life my list was whittled down to plumbing or arboriculture…as much as I like trees, I chose plumbing. Getting into a trade is not that easy. I enrolled on a fast track domestic plumbing diploma. Going back to school was fantastic. I was learning with people my age, all of us changing careers. We were keen and enthusiastic. Once I passed my diploma I had to get experience. I knew from working with horses I was in for a lot of hard work, at times frustrating and possibly doing a lot of work for nothing but if that is what it takes, then so be it! I am lucky enough to have a network behind me. My parents have been very supportive and my friends are helping me in every way they can – in return for free plumbing of course. I have also met through plumbing some very special people who have backed me 100%. I met Rob Whiting through a friend and he has been incredible. He has taken time to teach me and without his knowledge and guidance I wouldn’t be where I am today. I take on jobs of my own that I know I can manage. My skills and abilities are galloping on every day. Rob is always there to help me so no client ever gets let down or a job done badly. I haven’t mentioned the fact that I am one of very few female plumbers because not once have my male contempories ever made it an issue. I worked on a construction site and ok when it came to finding the ladies toilets they were as flummoxed as I was but they were so supportive and enjoyed having a woman in the mix. Nevertheless we are different and we do bring different attributes to the trade. It is a daunting process making such huge changes but with determination, humility and support anything can be achieved. Telephone 07734 140 582 poppygrosch@gmail.com

This is not always the case, what most people want is unity, peace and stability. Parents want safety for their children, workers want secure employment, and young people want a future where they can realise their dreams. All these things prey on peoples' minds and cause anxiety. This edition of the HCN sees the last ‘Hadleigh Great War Centenary Protect’ monthly article. Over the last four and half years, the project has told the story of Hadleigh’s Great War through the monthly articles that have paid tribute to the fallen. While the articles will now stop, the project continues and our findings will still be published to our website and Facebook page. We have also started working on a comprehensive book that we hope to publish later this year. This has been an amazing community project that has brought lots of people together. It has been a great success and that is thanks to four main groups that should be acknowledged. Firstly, I thank all those who have engaged including all the schools, youth and adult groups, individuals and relatives of the fallen. Secondly, I thank our sponsors who provide funding and practical support; including Avis Newsprint for giving us a column each month and Hadleigh Town Council. Thirdly, I need to thank our dedicated researchers; Nigel Crisp and Jeff Ward who both have a knack for uncovering hidden gems and fourthly, I need to thank the Hadleigh RBL Branch Committee who administer the project and continue to represent the RBL in our town. Finally, could I also thank the people of Hadleigh who gave their support to the RBL’s Thank You Campaign that paid tribute to the Great War generation and marked the centenary of the 1918 Armistice with so much respect. Please continue to follow the project at www.hadleighww1.com and on our Facebook page. Thank you Hadleigh. Mark Brennan, Chairman Hadleigh Branch RBL & Leader Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project
Dear Sir, I would like to thank the many people who have contacted me in response to Sheila Webb’s letter to this publication about me being de-selected as a Conservative candidate for the District Council elections in May. I am overwhelmed by residents’ kindness and support, and also their indignation that I have been treated this way and put in this position by South Suffolk Conservative Association. I would also like to thank Sheila Webb, Sylvia Martin, Councillor Tina Campbell, Babergh District Council Leader John Ward and numerous others who have put themselves out to support me. I have not been told why I have been de-selected (and I am the only candidate in this situation) – the voting balance would have been tipped by people who do not know me but must have been influenced by others. There is no proper appeal process. SSCA have offered me another ward outside Hadleigh, as their objective is for me not to stand in Hadleigh, even though at the time of writing they do not have a second candidate to stand in Hadleigh South, a two-seat ward. SSCA have even suggested I offer myself as a candidate in Ipswich. However, as I have represented Hadleigh for eight years, have lived here for 21 years and my heart is in this town, I have refused to accept offers of a ward outside Hadleigh. Last month there was a letter suggesting that the empty car park at Bridge could be used for Long Term parking. Regretfully I understand the there are legal reasons why this cannot happen. Perhaps it is time for all of us to think of ways that parking can be increased and how. In the 1950s it was suggested that the Church Yard be tarmacked for parking, I hope we all agree now that would be disastrous, by the 1970s the suggestion was Calais Street recreation area, and in the 1990s a detailed plan was drawn up by Babergh to pedestrianize the Town centre and chevron park, with trees between the parking areas the north end of the High Over these years the number of cars coming into the town has increased and on the whole many people are not prepared to walk very far from their cars, if they can’t park outside the shop they wish to visit then they don’t stop and unfortunately pedestrianizing the High Street would threaten the viability of

our shops. There must be some answers so why not put our thinking caps on and send our suggestions to our Community News. Let me throw my own pebble into the pond. How about making Magdalene Road Car Park two storey. We can’t dig a basement floor as the water level is too high, a properly built first floor would be expensive, but if any of you have seen the car park in Clacton High Street they have built a metal, uncovered first floor Obviously any extensions would be costly, but a metal build might be cheaper. However here come some of the problems. If I lived in Spooners Lane, Inkerman Road or the lower end of George Street, I would object strongly, then there is the problem of the Conservation area, just for starters. Do I agree with my own suggestion, probably not, but it is the first that I can come up with. So come on readers, Let us be having your ideas, none of them might work but there might just be a really good answer amongst them to a situation that is only going to deteriorate. Jan Byrne
Dear Sir, For some months I have mentioned to the Staff at Morrisons Hadleigh their incorrect worded signs. They have a checkout which has notices ‘10 ITEMS OR LESS’. Where one can count a number of objects or items the word FEWER is the correct word to be used. So these signs should read ‘10 ITEMS OR FEWER’ or ‘FEWER THAN 10 ITEMS’. Parents being their children, who are learning English, into the the store. These boys and girls should not be confronted with grammatically incorrect notices. My having written to Morrisons Customer Relations did not receive a positive response to my complaint about their incorrect use of English but I do hope that by the time you read this letter the incorrectly worded signs will have been replaced. Dear Sir, Through your magazine I would like those people who over the past few weeks have been so kind, loving and caring towards me to please accept my deepest heartfelt thanks. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart, those who I know and those who wish to remain anonymous. What seemed like a bleak time has been brightened by your actions. I cannot believe how generous you all have been but I thank God for each and every one of you and these actions of God’s love show me that His Kingdom is here on earth, not something which we will experience one day in the future, but here and now. His love is not just for the chosen few but for each and every one of us. Thank you. With much love, thanks and prayers, Trish Pitt

Dear Sir, It seems to me that quite a few people in Hadleigh will remember Mr & Mrs Rex Reed who lived in Benton Street, with their daughter Sheila, who was a close friend of my daughter Elizabeth during their years at Hadleigh High School in the seventies under Miss Creek. Sheila spent time with us in our home and also on some holidays, she was always fun. Two years ago, Sheila was diagnosed with invasive myeloma and received home and hospital care. She coped with all this in her stoical way and had ups and downs along the way. In November 2018, she was admitted to hospital where she stayed until the weeks before Christmas when she went home to be with her husband and three dogs. Sheila died alas, on Christmas Eve. Elizabeth and Sheila always kept in touch and met up, including at both their weddings. We are pleased that she had those last few days with Adrian at Tibbenham. Sheila was a real star, kind and caring and very popular in her village as well as being immensely brave throughout her illness. We shall miss her. Mrs J Horsburgh

The Steering Group meets on the second Monday of each month. A complete list of dates and our Terms of Reference are available. We share information and ideas with representatives from the following groups: voluntary social care, community organisations, residents, business and Town & District Councils. Anyone is welcome to attend and raise matters with the group but it would be helpful to know in advance so that your item is on the agenda and a chair will be waiting for you. Contact Clare Free @baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk 01449 724880. The next meeting will be Monday 12th February at 4.15 – 6pm In the Social Room at the Hadleigh Pool & Leisure Centre Chair Anita Young Speakers:- Councillors Haines and Schleip: Neighbourhood Development Plan Previous Meeting:- We welcomed John Ashton, President Sudbury and Districts Citizens Advice who spoke about the extensive work of the organisation. His centre is supported by one full time member of staff and up to 50 volunteers. It came as a shock to hear that, in spite of their invaluable work, the CA are independent and have to raise their own funds with some local authority support if they are lucky. Sudbury has been advised of a 50% cut in their contribution from Suffolk County Council. The group needs £3,000 a week to operate. All statistics indicate a steep increase in demand for help and advice but Sudbury still recorded 99% overall satisfaction with the assistance they provide. It is considered a Centre of Excellence for the East of England. Their outreach programme includes Hadleigh where they provide a drop in service at the Ansell Centre on the first Thursday of the month from 09.30 to 12.30. There is also an Advice Line and Web Chat Service. February Meeting:- Councillors Haines and Schleip will give a presentation into the development of the Neighbourhood Plan. Members of the public are invited to become involved. If you are interested please come to the meeting on 12th February at 4.15pm and hear more. Updates from the following groups visithadleighsuffolk Website (VH):- The latest YouTube features a lively evening at the town’s Jazz Club. The VH group will be holding their AGM at 6pm on Thursday 28th February at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Light refreshments available from 5.45pm followed by information about the website, all visitor services and some exciting new initiatives. Tidy Town Team (TTT):- The first post-Christmas pick was significantly better than in previous years. Last year 293 bags of rubbish were collected, an increase of 52 bags compared to 2017. The increase can be attributed to more volunteers and the collection of additional fly tipping, especially near Wolves Wood. Lay-bys on the bypass are also being checked. Recycling levels have improved and currently as much as a third of their collection are recycled. Pubs, restaurants and some shops welcomed the Ash Man. They were happy to support the ‘Stop the Drop’ campaign by accepting neat, flat, pocket sized ashtrays for their smokers. The TTT and the Hadleigh Town Council will continue to supply. It is hoped that this campaign will greatly decrease the number of cigarette ends all over the town. Hadleigh Town Council: Grants have been given to Hadleigh Community Transport Services, The Christmas Present Trust, Crucial Crew 2019, Hadleigh Elderly People’s Welfare Committee and HADs. Babergh District Council: There was an urgent call for residents to make more use of the No 90 Community Transport Bus in the evenings and Sundays. If it is not used we will lose it. Assurances were given that there is no plan to introduce car park charges in Hadleigh. As size and needs differ hugely, Hadleigh and Sudbury will be considered independently with respect to any future parking arrangements. Legacy Group: The Cedric Morris irises interpretation board is now in place. Community Gardens 200 narcissus and purple croci donated by the Coop and Rotary respectively should add to the springtime display in Magdalen Road. PPG:- The group has been focusing on the staggering number of missed GP’s and Nurses’ appointments at the Hadleigh and Boxford surgeries; 274 in November 2018, 194 in December and 1,132 in 6 months June to November. Patients are urged to either keep their appointments or cancel them so that others can fill the slot. Recognising the need for an ‘all round’ approach to patient care and well-being, the Hadleigh and Boxford Group Practice and the Sudbury and District Citizens Advice (CA) are conducting a pilot scheme to locate CA’s outreach advice service within the Hadleigh Health Centre each week. Effective from Tuesday 8th January until Tuesday 26th March, the hourly sessions will be at 9.30, 10.30 and 11.30a.m. Patients can be referred by GP’s Practice Nurses and Care Navigators. It is hoped that the initiative will be both useful and successful. AOB: The long awaited Market Place benches are in situ. Meet Up Monday (MUM) from 9.30 to 11a.m in the back room of The George

is growing and much enjoyed by all who came along. It is hoped this trend will continue. Thanks to a collaborative community initiative and The Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity there are new curtains in the Dining Room of the Town Hall complex. Concern was expressed about the state of the grass at the beginning of the Railway Walk in Station Road because the area is being used as a car park. The plants in the Cedric Morris Gardens behind the Coop are being damaged by mystery vehicles mounting the kerb. Any information welcome. The three barriers in front of an ancient wall in Magdalen Car Park are unsightly, inconvenient and an invitation to vandals. The situation is being regularly monitored by Babergh mid Suffolk Building Control Team. Hadleigh Hidden Gardens will a take place on Saturday 8th June from 11.00 to 17.00. A request was made for new gardens to participate and homemade cakes to sell at St Mary’s Church on the day. Contact Louise Chambury if you can help with either. 07939 142597 louise@louisechambury.com.

Hadleigh Garden Club Monday 14th January 2019: Well obviously this year there have been a lot of new years' resolutions made about gardening judging by the number of people who came to our January meeting, nearly every seat was taken! Darren Brooks, the general manager of Notcutts Garden Centre in Woodbridge, came to talk about 'plants for problem places', and he proved himself to be a very engaging and knowledgeable speaker. Concentrating on the problem areas of dry or damp shade, full sun, sandy or clay soils and dust and pollution, Darren had an answer for everything. In shady conditions plants with large leaves are better able to trap what light there is, these plants also are more highly perfumed to attract insects. In full sun which can scorch plants it is better to have small leaved or silver leaved plants. As many of us in Hadleigh garden on sandy soils it was good to know that this type of soil warms up more quickly so plants flower earlier. Darren also brought some useful booklets with lists of a broad range of plants for different growing conditions as well as bringing along some lovely plants from the Woodbridge centre which, needless to say, were soon snapped up. Congratulations go to Brian P who won the competition for 'a photo of your garden'. It was very nice to see so many visitors joining us for the evening, we look forward to seeing them again very soon. Monday February 11th 2019: Visit - Cambridge Botanical Garden January's edition of the RHS magazine featured gardens worth visiting at this time of year for the quality of their winter planting. One of them, Cambridge Botanical Garden, is the destination for the club in February. This will be a whole day visit by coach leaving Hadleigh at 9.45am and arriving back at around 5.00pm. This is a new garden for us and we are very much looking forward to seeing it, we are always happy to welcome non members on our visits, so for more details, prices and to book a seat please contact us at www.hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

East Anglian Garden Group In January about 20 members enjoyed a bracing walk through the Winter Walk at Anglesey Abbey, the snowdrops were just beginning to flower, as were the hellebores. The Viburnam bodnantens, Daphnes and Lonicera fragrantissima were sharing their wonderful fragrances, and the Cornus looked stunning, we even spotted an early flowering cluster of daffodils. It was a lovely way to start the gardening year. We have an exciting program of talks and visits lined up for this year. By the time you read this, we will have enjoyed Gail Harland and her talk on ‘Snowdrops – planting growing, snowdrops in art and culture’. Our Celebrity Speaker, James Alexander-Sinclair will be giving his talk – ‘Dancing through Borders’, on February 16th, this is a ticket only event, so please contact our secretary, whose details are on the website. Tickets are £10 for members, and £15 for non-members, both inclusive of a £2.50 donation to the charity Greenfingers, which creates beautiful gardens for childrens hospices. On March 2nd Stephen Barstow, the well- known vegetable guru, will be giving us his talk ‘Around the World in 80 Plants’ and most of these will be vegetables I imagine! All meetings are held at Chamberlin Hall in Bildeston, talks, with the exception of the Celebrity Speaker, are free to members, non members are welcome for a small entry fee. Details of all these talks, and forthcoming visits can be found on the website, new members are always welcome. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Down to Earth ...with Dave By the time you read this we may well be under a blanket of snow, or at least we will have had some more seasonal frosts. Provided that any tender plants are under cover this will not be a bad thing as we need some frost to help break down the soil and kill off some pests. On the subject of pests, DEFRA has announced that from the spring of 2020 the use of slug pellets containing metaldehyde will be banned. They say that metaldehyde poses an unacceptable risk to birds and mammals. There are less harmful types of pellets on the market but I still prefer to pick the horrid things off by hand and put them in a pot of salty water. The order from Kings seeds has arrived very promptly as usual, the packets are stored in a tin box in the garage, neatly arranged by the date they can be sown. The first to be put in will be the leeks, celeriac, red cabbage, spring onion, early peas, various leaf salads and cucumber. They will all be sown in the greenhouse using fresh sowing compost and using heated trays with plastic lids. Later on will come the runner and dwarf beans, sweetcorn, various squash and several types of sunflower. There is no rush, as with the added heat they should all germinate quite quickly, and all danger of frost must have passed before anything can be planted out. Other seeds such as parsnip, carrots, and spinach beet is directly sown on the allotment but only when the soil is warm enough. For most of the various brassicas and the tomatoes I tend to use bought in plug plants. The fuchsia gall mite that showed up on some of the plants overwintering in the greenhouse seems to be under control by pinching off the affected buds and treating the emerging growth with some methylated spirit. We shall have to wait and see if the plants survive. Not much to do on the allotment at this time of year but we are still managing to pick some veg on nearly every visit and it is easy to keep the weeds under control with the use of a hoe. Compost heap number three has been emptied out onto the ground ready for rotavating in later on when it is a bit drier. An old plastic dustbin has been put over one of the rhubarb plants, this will hopefully force a slightly earlier crop. It won't be long until the first daffodils are ready for cutting and taking home as they are already showing plenty of buds. The first early potatoes are chitting away on their egg trays in the shed, this year the size of them is a bit mixed, with some being a bit big. This is not a problem as the largest of them will be cut in half as they are planted out. As long as each portion has a shoot on it then it will grow into a proper plant. That's all for this time, Dave

Hadleigh’s Heritage hit again! Mark Murphy of Radio Suffolk interviewed the occupier of the house shown above. It was hit by a bus travelling along Hadleigh’s southern access. It failed to stop after the accident. The same house has been hit four times in 2018. James Bayliss, the owner, said vehicles continue to endanger pedestrians and cause damage to property along the B1070. Suffolk Highways says it will inspect the site to see if anything can be done to reduce the risk but that it wasn’t its’ responsibility to protect properties. The preferred solution chosen from options presented by SCC to Hadleigh residents over 18 months ago has still not been trialled as promised. SCC Councillor for Hadleigh - Mick Fraser - raised the issue at an HTC sub-committee meeting last year. Hadleigh Town Council have yet to find time to discuss the problem. Meanwhile the dangers to residents and to Hadleigh’s historic heritage continues. Benton Street Interest Group

HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 20th December 2018 Present: Councillors: Matthews (Chair), Angland, Fraser, Free, Haines, Haylock, Knock, Loftus, Monks, Sheldrick, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. In attendance: Suffolk County Councillor Fraser and Babergh District Councillor Grandon and 7 members of the public. Apologies For Absence Apologies were received from Councillors Byrne and Cook for personal reasons. These apologies were accepted. Declarations Of Interest Councillor Fraser declared a non-pecuniary interest in the Grant request from Student Life as he has made a grant to this organisation in his role as Suffolk County Councillor. Councillors Angland, Loftus and Haylock declared pecuniary interests in the Payment Schedule as they were all receiving payments and left the room for this item. Councillor Shearly-Sanders declared a non-pecuniary interest in the Environment & General Purposes Committee – as he lives on Benton Street. Minutes The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 15th November 2018 subject to the following changes: Reports of the County & District Councillors; the words “more per head” to be added after £5.00. Accounts for Payment; Add – Councillor Knock queried the payment to P & J Builders. Minute No: 160 – Archive Fund; The word ‘legalities’ changed to ‘legal structure’. Councillor Shearly-Sanders read the following statement: At approximately 9.40pm Cllr Cook moved a motion, without notice, for a resolution that Standing Orders be suspended. I understand Cllr Cook’s intention may have been to enable the meeting which was due to end automatically at 10pm pursuant to both Standing Order 25 and Standing Order 48 to continue to 10.15pm. To suspend a Standing Order, this must be done by motion for a resolution and may be moved without notice, under Standing Order 18(j) but this is “to suspend particular standing order(s) excepting those which reflect mandatory statutory or legal requirements”. As the motion did not follow the terms of the Standing Order, it could not be made without notice, and even if it had been made on notice it would have had to specify both Standing Order 25, and possibly Standing Order 48 because the meeting having started at 7.30pm it terminates after 2 and one-half hours under Standing Order 48. Unlike Standing Order 25, which contains machinery for extension, Standing Order 48 does not, so it is arguable that this difference must result in no ability to extend the duration under Standing Order 48. As a result it follows that the purported resolution was of no lawful effect and the meeting ended at 10pm after which no further lawful business could be transacted by the Council. The need for precision was acknowledged by the Monitoring Officer from the Council’s Principal Authority (Babergh DC) when she and a representative of the Suffolk Association of Local Councils (SALC) recently met with members of the Council. Without limiting the earlier comments it may be helpful to mention some further matters. Firstly, just after the meeting finished at 10pm members of the public, who had been validly excluded from the meeting pursuant to Standing Order 28, re-entered the Place of the Meeting. If the meeting had not ended by then, which it had, the meeting could have been adjourned by a resolution of the Council, moved without notice under Standing Order 18(h). No such resolution was moved. Neither did the Mayor purport to adjourn the meeting under the very limited inherent common law power, which he might otherwise have been able to do (see John V Rees (1969) 3 WLR 1294, 1317), as the meeting having ended at that time there was no meeting for him to chair. Secondly, after the meeting had ended at 10pm and members of the public had re-entered the Place of the Meeting, the Mayor, Proper Officer and several members of the Council left the Place of the meeting leaving four members of the Council still present in the Place of the Meeting. If the meeting had not ended by 10pm which it had the number of members present would have still be required to constitute a quorum, Standing Order 46 one-third of the whole number of members of the Council constitute a quorum, that is five members. It would have followed that when the number of members in the Place of the Meeting fell to four members, then if the meeting had not already ended by then, it would on becoming inquorate, have ended. Under Standing Order 48 when a meeting becomes inquorate no business shall be transacted and the meeting shall be closed. The business on the Agenda shall be adjourned to another meeting. Thirdly after 10pm when the meeting ended, the Member, proper officer and some Councillors reassembled in another place, which was not the Place of the Meeting as published pursuant to requirements in an Act of Parliament, that is Paragraph 10(2)(a) of Schedule 12, of the Local Government Act 1972. No notice had been given for a Council meeting to take place at such venue, nor any of the requirements for such a meeting. The Monitoring Officer mentioned to a councillor present at the meeting with her and the representative of SALC already referred to, that this was wrong. Any business of the Council purported to be transacted after 10pm on the 15th November 2018 was not lawful and should be put on the Agenda for another meeting; the next Council meeting is due on 17th January. In the meantime the Acting Town Clerk and Proper Officer will no doubt advise any third parties

involved with any business purported to be transacted after 10pm on the 19th November, that as a result of the process problems already mentioned, no further action should be taken until such time as appropriate resolutions have been passed by the Council. Councillor Shearly-Sanders then put forward a motion to approve the minutes with the amendment taking out all Minute 165 and 166. Councillor Schleip seconded the motion. Voting was: For: Councillors: Free, Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders, Sheldrick and Wiltshire. Against: Councillors: Angland, Haylock, Loftus, Matthews, Monks. Abstention: Councillor Fraser and Haines. The Motion was carried. Matters Arising Standing Order 40: Councillor Wiltshire advised that she had e.mailed the office and still had received no reply to her question – if there was a tender process for the £15,000 contract which was offered to Bullards. The Clerk was asked to investigate. Finance & Personnel Committee: Councillor Knock advised that he had asked the Clerk to put this item on the Agenda as he did not feel that matter had been resolved to his satisfaction. The Clerk had refused and referred him to Standing Order 67. He did not accept this answer nor that the item had been agreed correctly as no vote was taken. Councillor Loftus pointed out that as the item had not been spoken against then there was full Council agreement and Councillor Monks reported that there was no vacancy on the Committee. There followed a discussion about motions and resolutions. The Clerk advised that all items on the agenda are motions and all Council agreements are resolutions. The Chair invited Councillor Knock to put a full written motion to the Clerk for the next meeting. At this point the meeting was adjourned for members of the public to speak on how the Council will be viewed from the outside, a personal incident and Council procedures. Police The Clerk reported that she had met with Sgt. Miah who had provided the following crime statistics: Hadleigh North – 1.9.2018 to 12.12.2018 – 126 investigations Hadleigh North – 1.9.2017 to 12.12.2017 – 114 investigations Hadleigh South – 1.9.2018 to 12.12.2018 – 39 investigations Hadleigh South – 1.9.2017 to 12.12.2017 – 43 investigations. Sgt. Miah had also provided additional information on crimes committed during December 2018 on the High Street which were currently being investigated. Sgt. Miah agreed to pass on the Councillors comments on the monthly newsletter as the printed document is quite difficult to read. She also asked that Councillors and residents try to attend the Police Forum Meetings as this is your opportunity to raise issues and re-iterated the point that the Police can only act if incidents are reported to them. Councillor Haylock reported that it had taken the owner of one of the shops 30 minutes to get an answer from the police. The Clerk was asked to find out if the CCTV in the town was working. The Clerk reported the response received from Mr. Passmore that his public meeting dates would be announced shortly and Hadleigh Town Councillors would be most welcome to attend the one organised for the Hadleigh area. Reports Of The County & District Councillors Written reports had been received from Suffolk County Councillor Fraser. He was asked to investigate the road repairs carried out on Clay Lane as the area was now back to the pre-repaired state. It was felt that the Highways Fault Report facility on the webpage be more widely publicised. It was also good news that the work to be carried out by Anglia Water had been delayed until after the Christmas period as any closure of Benton Street has an impact on local businesses. Apologies had been received Babergh District Councillors Dr. Dawson and Campbell. Councillor Campbell had sent an e.mail advising that there were no plans to bring in car parking charges but a review was being carried out. Babergh District Councillor Grandon reported that the bench was in place in the Market Place and would like to invite Councillors and members of the Steering Group to a publicity photo shoot in the New Year. Mayor’s Communications The Mayor advised that the letters had been sent to the Royal British Legion. The Clerk reported: i) The Benton Street Defibrillator item, with the agreement of Councillor Monks, has been moved to the January meeting. ii) All utility accounts have been extended to 2024 giving the best deal for the Council. iii) A meeting with Kathy Nixon, Strategic Director of Babergh District Council, who drew attention to the Polling Station Consultation which the Hadleigh Together Facebook page were aware of prior to the Clerks being officially informed. This apparently could be of notifications received via Twitter. iv) A meeting with Marc Cole – Interim Assistant Director – Economic Development and Regeneration, Babergh District Council, and Councillor Angland on the ‘Vision of Hadleigh’ going to be produced in line with those being worked on for Sudbury, Needham Market, Stowmarket and Eye. Standing Order No. 21 Councillor Monks asked this Council as a body do they support the notion of working as one Council. This is something I am sure we all feel is important and necessary but unfortunately over recent times has not always been the case. Hadleigh Town Council has been in place for 44 years and before that the Urban District Council was here before us and will be here after us and like any individual in a caretaking position we aim to leave it as a fully functioning, workable Council. The sum total of experience of staff in the office is 79 years. We need to recognise that there are local issues we need to be working together on, the Neighbourhood Plan, the potential introduction of car parking charges, the cuts that SCC are planning which will affect front line services, affecting Hadleigh residents, the Benton Street Working Party that has hopefully to be established and after the recent accident damaging property, sorely needed to name a few.
The staff in the office are responsible for a multitude of things on behalf of Hadleigh, not just the paperwork for these meetings. Time spent answering the numerous and often unhelpful emails from Councillors only serves to distract from the very important work in hand as well as creating a difficult working environment for staff which is not beneficial to all concerned and concerns me. Councillors have received mail from another Councillor to their home address. Those receiving this mail have asked for this practice to stop but, so far, in some instances, it has not. This is, I am sure, not meant to be a violation of someone’s wishes but it is how it is received and we must all be more aware of how our actions both individually and as a Council impact on each other and take action accordingly. The continued belief by some Councillors, that this Council is not effective is a misrepresentation of what is actually happening. Changes have been encouraged and tighter working practices adopted. Change and adaption is happening. Good work has been done and continues to be done by the efforts of Councillors and staff. This is all good. The people of Hadleigh want to see us serve them with goodwill and clear direction on what issues are affecting them and their families. We need to deliver on this in 2019 and leave the new Council in May in good order. Councillor Shearly-Sanders asked Councillor Monks to re-state her question which she did: I would like to ask this Council as a body do they support the notion of working as one Council? The Mayor asked the Clerk to put this on a future agenda in order that Council had the opportunity to discuss and reply. Councillor Shearly-Sanders asked the following two questions: At the Meeting of the Council held on 18 October 2018 I asked the following question (Minute 122 (Standing Order 40) Item 4) Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity “At the meeting of the Council held on 14 February 2018 I asked questions under Standing Order 40 regarding the Hadleigh Guildhall Complex. In reply (Minute 164) I was advised - "these questions would need to be asked of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity" I have subsequently ascertained that this reply was wrong. It is conceptually impossible to ask a question of an incorporeal entity (it has no legal identity). The Trustee of the Charity is Hadleigh Town Council, which is a legal entity and responsible for performing the trust obligation and the correct legal entity to answer the questions”. 1 - Payments to Hadleigh 1 Has the Council made payments for general benefit of the inhabitants of Hadleigh since 31 May 2011 under its obligation (in Paragraph 20 of the Trust Document)? 2 If no payments have been made, why not? 2 - Plan for Leasing 1 What plan does the Council have for leasing the Guildhall complex? 2 If none, is the Council seeking professional advice on a letting strategy to help comply with its leasing obligation (in Paragraph 20 of the Trust Document)? 3 If the Council is not seeking professional advice, why is it not doing so?”. As the Mayor has now had two months to prepare answers to these questions, will he now please answer them. At the meeting of the Council held on 18 October 2018 I asked the following question, amongst others relating to the Cemetery Extension Project which have not been answered by the Mayor at this time (Minute 122 (Standing Order 40) Item 2) Cemetery Extension Project “3 Site Suitability and Safety (a) Is the Mayor able to confirm that a Site Suitability Report has been prepared by the relevant members of the Council’s Professional Team? (b) If not, please confirm that the lack of such a report relating to the development has been notified to the Council’s indemnity insurers and they are confirmed that its absence will not affect the validity should any claims arise which could have been avoided if such a report had been obtained ? (c) If a Site Suitability Report has been obtained please confirm that – (aa) it relates to the revised specification in connection with the 2017 Planning Permission; and (bb) that it has been supplied to the Council’s indemnity insurers. (d) Please confirm that the proposed Contractor will not be allowed to commence any work on site until there is a health and safety methodology agreed by the Council’s Professional Team and adequate advance warning of start on site has been given to the public, including advance warnings on site, following exchange of Project Documents, and on Council’s website, Facebook and notice boards” As the Mayor has now had two months to prepare answers to these questions, will he now please answer them? Accounts For Payment It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £25,097.12 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. There were a number of questions raised over payment to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity, the Mayor’s and Deputy Mayor’s allowance the payment to Bullards. It was suggested that two payment schedules be prepared separating the salaries from the main payments. It was agreed that this would be discussed at the next Finance & Personnel Committee meeting. Councillor Shearly-Sanders proposed a motion that the payments made to Bullards and Gill be removed until after the January meeting. Councillor Schleip seconded the motion. Voting was: For: Councillors: Haines, Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. Against: Councillors: Angland, Haylock, Loftus, Matthews, Monks and Sheldrick. Abstention: Fraser and Free. The Motion was not carried. Voting to agree the payment schedule was: For: Councillors: Angland, Fraser, Free, Haines, Haylock, Loftus, Matthews, Monks and Sheldrick. Against: Councillors Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. Planning Committee The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 29th November 2018 were noted. The Clerk was asked to list all the Planning
Applications relating to the Babergh District Council application to clarify that none of them were being commented on. Finance & Personnel Committee The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 6th December 2018 was received and accepted including the recommendations to make the following grants: i) £667 to Hadleigh Community Transport Services ii) £250 to The Christmas Present Trust iii) £250 to Crucial Crew 2019 iv) £300 to Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee v) £300 to HADS And the following expenditure: i) To instruct RBS to carry out the year end at a cost of £540 +VAT ii) To go ahead with the planning application for the Layham Road Pavilion at a cost of £924 plus £1,608 for additional drawings iii) To carry out electrical work required for the new microphones to work with the existing sound system at a cost of £1,062.65+VAT And agreed to close the offices from the 21st December 2018 to 2nd January 2019 Councillor Knock asked if the office closure hours came out of the staff holiday entitlement or was it additional time off. The Clerk advised that this had always been given as additional time. Councillor Knock was not happy with this arrangement as he felt public money was being badly spent. Councillor Monks advised that the staff contracts were due to be updated and this matter would be addressed. Grant For Student Life The Clerk advised that this application had not been put before the Finance & Personnel Committee but the organisation required a response before the Committee met again in February 2019. Councillor Sheldrick proposed a grant of £500 which was seconded by Councillor Angland which was agreed. Environment & General Purposes Committee The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 6th December 2018 was received and including the recommendations to: i) Reinstate the Hadleigh Traffic Management Working Group ii) Bring Toppesfield Park Side Weir to the attention of the District Councillors And the following amendment: The Committee had made a recommendation to send an e.mail to Councillor Cresswell advising him that Hadleigh Town Council have always supported free short term parking. Councillor Fraser proposed an amendment to this recommendation that the e.mail be sent to the four District Councillors and Babergh District Council and not to Councillor Cresswell. This was seconded by Councillor Angland. Voting was 10 for; 1 against and 2 abstentions. The amendment was approved. Taking into account the approved amendment the report was approved. The Meeting closed at 10.00pm. All Agenda Items not dealt with will be carried over to the January Meeting. Mr. Crimmin, RFO advised that he was not available to attend the meeting on the 17th January 2019. Mrs E. Root – Acting Proper Officer Addendum: This is a draft report of the meeting. The Minutes will be approved at the Monthly Town Council Meeting held on the third Thursday of the following month. Minutes are viewable on Hadleigh Town Council website – hadleigh.suffolk.cloud

Parish Council The Parish Council does not meet in December and the January meeting takes place after the February Community News print deadline – so you will have to be patient as you wait until March for parochial news! Parish Councillor elections In the meantime it is worth pointing out again that the present group of Parish Councillors come to the end of their current tenure after the Annual Parish Meeting in April. They may or may not stand for re-election in May. It is certainly a good time for anyone interested in community work to think about putting themselves forward as councillors. Full details will be published in the March edition of the HCN. New Parish Plan You will all have had addressed questionnaire delivered to your home from the Parish Council. The idea was that the person who delivered it to you should return to collect it – once you have answered the questions. If that person has not been able to get back or has not caught you in we would be very grateful if you could deliver it. If you don’t know who to contact please leave an email message at layhampc@gmail.com and someone will call. Why are we taking all this trouble? To try to ensure that the Parish Council is working on issues that matter to YOU. News from the Village Hall Bookings remain busy and through the winter months the hall is really benefiting from the lower ceiling and warm heating. Renovation plans are coming along with work due to be carried out later in 2019. Many thanks to ‘Embrace Architects’ for providing fantastic plans. This year the Village Hall Committee and Layham Playgroup CIO are creating a NEW EVENTS COMMITTEE for the village. We invite and encourage any other organisation or anyone who lives in Layham who like to organise fun and frolicking events for the community to join our little group. As they are registered charities, any money raised at the events will be put back into the community. Quizzes, film nights, open gardens, curry evenings, children events, sports events on the playing field - at the local pubs, village hall or on the playing field. Anything goes! Suffolk Day is on 21 June this year and could be a lovely day to revive a Layham Village Summer Fete perhaps. Get your competition veg. growing now! If you have some time, energy and ideas to contribute, contact Katy by email or ‘phone (katysheppard@gmail.com or 07974 730023). We will then schedule a mutually convenient time to all meet up - many hands make light work. Layham Local History Group Jeff Ward, one of our members, has been working hard over many months to gather all the information he can about Layham men who survived service in the military during the First World War. Recently he has made contact with a Canadian descendant of Arthur Garrod and uncovered a great story about a Layham boy. Arthur Garrod was born 4 Nov 1888 in a cottage at Cobbler's Corner, son of Edward and Eliza. By 1911 he was working in South London where he met his wife to be, Georgina Percy. He emigrated to Canada in April 1911 and settled in Stratford Ontario. Georgina followed in the August of that year and they married in April 1912. There were to be four children. In November 1914 he enlisted as a private soldier in the 19th Canadian Regiment, a territorial unit. There followed rapid promotion and by 1917 he was Regimental Sergeant Major. In the New Years Honours list for 1918 he was awarded the Military Cross. His regiment went to France in Sept 1915, after a spell in England, and was involved in some heavy fighting including the attack on Vimy Ridge. The regiment returned to Canada in late 1919. After the war he was commissioned into the Canadian Territorial Army and by 1933 was a Lieutenant Colonel commanding the Perth Regiment of Ontario. As a civilian he had a successful career with the Canadian National Railroad. He died in July 1979 aged 90. His obituary records that his ashes were to be buried in Layham. At the moment we cannot say if this wish was carried out. If anyone who reads this knows of a descendent of the Layham Garrod family living locally, please draw their attention to this article. They may like to contact us via michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net

Sylvia awarded an MBE Hadleigh resident, Sylvia Martin, has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list. She was nominated for the Award (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for public and political service. Sylvia, who lives in Raven Way, moved to Hadleigh 18months ago to live nearer one of her daughters who lives in Assington. Since moving to Hadleigh she has kept busy with the being Secretary to the Hadleigh Branch of the Conservative Association, a Member of the Executive Committee and being a member of two bridge clubs, but prior to living in Hadleigh life was a whole different pace. Previously, Sylvia lived in East Sussex, where her active community and political life included being Chairman of Wealdon District Council; EuroChairman, Sussex Area Management Executive; a District Councillor for eight years and Chairman of the Sussex Area Management Executive with responsibility for 16 Conservative Associations – and this leaves out dozens of other community focussed roles. Sylvia says: “I think my highlight was being Chairman of the Council for two years as I had the honour of representing the Council at many different events and meeting some very interesting people.” “I am really excited and honoured to be given this Award and very grateful to the people who nominated me. I am looking forward to the big day. I will be visiting Buckingham Palace with my three daughters as my guests, one is coming from Calgary, Canada and the other from Eastbourne, so I am sure it will be a splendid occasion.” I have known Sylvia Martin since she moved to Hadleigh and not only has she proved a kind and loyal friend, but she has enjoyed getting involved in many Hadleigh community activities. I wish her many congratulations. Sylvia adds: “I am looking forward to a long and happy future in Hadleigh.” Kathryn Grandon Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South

It’s February and spring is just around the corner, I'm sure all of us are looking forward to the lighter nights heading our way. We welcomed a new member in January, Rotarian Hazel Cooley, a lady who is already giving us new ideas for the club and promises to be a great asset. We are looking forward to working with Hazel and we wish her a long and happy future in Rotary. At the time of writing we have the last January meeting on the horizon and I anticipate that our speaker, Barbara Boyd from the Thrift Shop in Hadleigh will be a great example to us all. She has done so much hard work for so many charities over the years that all her efforts should not go unnoticed. February can be a bit gloomy, but the members of The Rotary club of Hadleigh will be experiencing a couple of interesting events this month. On the 12th February we have a speaker from the Suffolk Fire and Rescue, a Mr Phil Geeson. We will be asking many questions on Fire safety with a special interest in the hard of hearing and the partially sighted coping with such an emergency. The 28th of February marks the 41st year of the Charter of our club and to celebrate this we are having a Charter luncheon in Lavenham. Our guest speaker at this event is Mr Mervyn Linford who is a poet, author and publisher, he will be giving a talk entitled "Lavenham to Leigh on Sea", sub titled “Country Ways – Coastal Waters” we are looking forward to an enlightening and light hearted afternoon. Keep a watch out for our purple crocuses outside Partridges reminding us of “Purple for Polio”. When these little bulbs begin to grow we will remember the efforts made by Rotary throughout the world to end polio, besides enjoying the lovey show they provide for us promising a taste of things to come. The Rotary Club of Hadleigh meets twice a month at lunchtimes in The George, High Street, Hadleigh and if you would like the opportunity to serve your local community and enjoy good company you would be most welcome to attend a meeting to find out what we do. For more information please contact Linda Humphries on 07905061399. Man has an affinity for his fellowman, regardless of race, creed or politics and the greater the variety, the more the zest. All friendliness needs is a sporting chance; it will take care of itself in any company. – Paul P Harris.

Library Life: Friends
Whatfield Village Hall, Rectory Road, IP7 6QU
“There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t yet met” William Butler Yeats. I like to think that this quote is nicely representative of libraries which are increasingly becoming some of the last bastions of community hubs. We all know that when you find someone with whom you have something in common there is an immediate bond; and followed up, this can turn into a true friendship. Libraries are unique in that, in a way, they hold within their walls – everything! Every genre, topic, interest and hobby is represented somewhere, be it in reference books, novels, music, films or via the free-to-use computers and so the odds are you will meet someone there who has a similar interest to you. Now, for those who say, hang on, the internet has all that and perhaps more, well I say this, okay, but at the library there is something much more important that the web cannot provide: real, human, live, face-to-face interaction. I have made many new friends since working at the library and all around me there I see many sorts of friendship groups use the services. Parents and guardians bond at the kid’s singing sessions or craft days. Students revise side-by-side, friends and families use the room available to hire for celebrations. But, the library itself also has its own, special friendship group, as do many of the other libraries within Suffolk. The Friends of Hadleigh Library are a wonderful group of people who get together to really hands-on help the library evolve, support itself and be involved in the local community. They participate with the activities and decisions of their library from what events to put on, guest speakers to invite, what supplies to invest in, helping out at events and finding new and creative ways to raise funds. We are hugely thankful to our Friends Group and are always happy to welcome new members - you can be a friend of Hadleigh Library too and be involved in its success. If you would like to learn more about becoming a Friend of Hadleigh Library, do come in and talk to us or e-mail us at hadleigh.library@suffolklibraries.co.uk or call us on 01473 823778. www.jenny-may.com

Take A Seat…
Clair Perks, activities coordinator at Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, reckons Eddie’s fortnightly morning workouts are “the perfect way to get people ready for lunchtime and the rest of the day”. Mr Willett, 31, of Bury St Edmunds, who started his sessions at the Kingsley Healthcare run home two months ago, said: “I was a carer for more than five years until I did a diploma to become a personal trainer and launched my mobile businesses Ascension Fitness.“It was about two years ago that I developed a niche business putting on classes in care homes and I now visit more than 15 homes a week across East Anglia.” He said there was a lot of research to show that exercise was beneficial for people living with dementia, possibly slowing down mental decline as well as improving mobility, lifting mood and raising self-confidence. “The smiles I get show that people are really enjoying the opportunity to move to music. It’s definitely making a difference to them. “And staff at the homes I visit say residents talk about me ahead of my visits, which is really nice,” he said. Mr Willett said he always started with stretches to warm up and finished off each 30 minute session with a warm-down. He said: “We concentrate on chair-based exercises so everyone can take part. We do exercises to move both the arms and legs as well as a little bit of cardiovascular.” Ms Perks said: “Our residents love it and are excited when I tell them he is coming. He really makes it fun, it’s not just boring exercise. For example, when he plays YMCA he gets them to do all the gestures. “As well as benefiting from the exercise it really helps to lift their mood.”

I am not often persuaded to sit outside on a cold winter’s afternoon, but a few brave people took the opportunity to celebrate the arrival of Hadleigh’s new landmark – the circular bench in the Market Place. Beneath the central tree there are some lovely seasonal cyclamen to Front row from left: Stuart Service, Jessica Janas look at while trying out and Sylvia Martin (Hadleigh Steering Group), the new bench – Kathryn Grandon (District Councillor and Hadleigh Community Hadleigh Steering Group). Back row from left: Gardeners are planning Jane Snowdon (Hadleigh Steering Group), Tina to grow more plants Campbell (District Councillor and Hadleigh Steering Group), Jane Haylock (Hadleigh Town there at various times of Councillor and Hadleigh Steering Group). the year, so keep a look out. Or, take a seat on Friday mornings while the market is on and experience the market’s atmosphere with a coffee (and maybe you’ll be persuaded to purchase some great stuff while you are there). The bench was purchased by Babergh Public Realm, with consultation on the design with Hadleigh Town Council and the Hadleigh Steering Group. The bodies wanted a different and contemporary design to suit both the traditional and modern setting of the Market Place. There are bound to be some who do not warm to the design, but so far they have completely been out-weighed by the positive response I have received. There is plenty of room on the bench for a ‘crowd’ – so see you there when the weather warms up! Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South

Hadleigh Table Tennis Club Both Hadleigh teams were recently drawn together in the Ipswich League’s Handicap Cup competition quarter final stage. Current Holders Hadleigh “A” of Division 1 received a bye in the first round and the “Owls” of Division 3 had accounted for BT Wulfs of Division 1 by 336 points to 300 in Round 1. The game was a close affair with the “Owls” starting with a reasonable points advantage. Dean Abbott (Owls) had a good win in the first half by beating Peter Wright (“A” team ) by 21-15 using a strong forehand attack. However in the second half Peter easily reserved the scores with some solid counterattacking running out 21-8 winner. As the match progressed the “A” team’s extra experience paid dividends with final result 312 to 296 in their favour. In the semi-Final they await the winners of the tie between Britannia Ravens (Premier) and Pickwicks “A” (Division 2). The “Owls” followed this narrow defeat by an excellent league away win against Britannia Cormorants by 8 games to 2. Dean Abbott had a good maximum with both Rupert Pyett and David Rickett winning two games each. The “Owls” are now mid-table having won 5 and lost 5 of their games. The Club is still on the look-out for anyone interested in trying their hand in the League. Hadleigh Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG)
GP/Citizens Advice Outreach Scheme General Practice is under increasing pressure. GPs play a crucial role at the frontline of the health system, but workloads have been growing in both in volume and complexity, while funding has declined. There is a need to relieve unnecessary demands on GPs to ensure they remain able to provide high quality patient care. Citizens Advice delivers advice and support to millions of people each year, including outreach advice in over 500 health locations. They see the ways that people’s personal and practical problems, like debt or poor housing, cause detriment in other parts of their lives. They also see how these issues are often caused by or affecting people’s health and wellbeing, or their treatment. This means people often present to their GP when they are experiencing personal or practical issues. These issues are often ‘non-clinical’, meaning they are not specifically medical, although they may be underlying or related to clinical health issues. It has been shown that 33% of clients went to a GP or local health service before Citizens Advice. People may be presenting to health providers because these ‘non-clinical’ issues are affecting their health, or because they don’t know where else to go for support. Understanding the role for advice in supporting patients, within the primary care setting, the Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice and Sudbury Citizens Advice are conducting a pilot scheme to locate outreach advice within the surgery. • The pilot will run for 3 months with effect from Tuesday 8th January until Tuesday 26th March 2019 at the Hadleigh Surgery. • Three advice sessions per morning will be available at 9.30, 10.30 and 11.30, allowing one hour per client. • Patients can be referred by GP’s, Practice Nurses or Care Navigators. It is hoped that this initiative can help improve people’s health and wellbeing, help reduce some of the ‘non-clinical’ demand on health providers, and improve overall patient care.

Thank you, Hadleigh, from The Christmas Present Trust Wow, what a Christmas Day we had. This year 111 people turned up to volunteer or be a part of our now annual Christmas Day meal and party. As always we had a wonderful time together and, whether a volunteer or guest, we all went away with the festive spirit firmly in our hearts. The day itself is very special, but we cannot do it without a great deal of help and support. We would therefore like to express our heartfelt thanks to the following people and organisations: Keith Avis – for publicity. Adnams, East of England Co-op, Erivica cakes, The Jolly Meat Company, Crabtrees, Jane Snowdon, Mark David (The Cooking Experience), and many others for providing the food and drink. Supreme Petfoods Ltd and their amazing collection of Christmas jumpers, Franey and Rand, TSB, The Emporium, Hadleigh Rotary Club, Hadleigh Town Council, Brett Valley Lodge, The Thrift Shop, M. W. Partridge & Co., Sweet Memories, Watts and Co, The Cock Inn Quiz courtesy of the Mayor and many other donations both large and small from the wonderful people of Hadleigh; and of course to the lovely staff at Ipswich Building Society who accept the donations on our behalf. Graham Holmes, Andrew Stone and Lynn Whiter for the music. The Ansell Centre Trust for providing the venue. Charmaine Mckissock for designing our new logo, providing original artwork for cards and mugs and, not least, for looking after the children on the day in the art corner. Sheila Webb and her delegates for all the knitted decorations. All of our volunteers on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. We could not do this without you. A special mention must go to Yvonne Free who, as First Responder, went above and beyond the call of duty and still helped to tidy up! If we have missed anyone off the list I am very sorry – you can see that so many people are involved it can be quite overwhelming. Suffice to say that we are, as always, truly humbled to think that so many people are willing to think of others and help out in whatever way they can. Hadleigh really is a caring community and we are so pleased to be a part of this wonderful town. Simon and Sarah Thompson
Suffolk Bereavement Support A Chance To Hear It From One Of Our Members As group leaders our greatest satisfaction is the feedback we receive from our members and I know that some of you out there must be wondering what attending one of our groups is like. In the following one of our members explains how it felt to lose a loved and how the group helped: ‘Bereavement - a sense of loss, isolation. The incomprehension of others to the despair of facing a future that stretches away into an infinitesimal fog. No one to reach out to for help or understanding ‘How are you’ a kindly question delivered with the expectation of a positive reply. We rise to it with ‘I’m all right’. We are far from all right. Against expectation I found myself walking into Patrick’s Bereavement help group with no expectation of any real progress. The first impression was the total lack of formality and the kindly manner I was greeted by everyone present. No stress there then! About ten persons seated were chatting to each other in a relaxed and friendly manner. Enquiries for the welfare of other attendees were being made and during the following discussion conducted by Margaret each person present who wished to enter into the conversation was given the gentle help to do so, encouraged by the group, as well as its two leaders. Noticeably everyone eventually joined in because the atmosphere of support and understanding. This was a safe environment to open up the heart, each participant realising that their feelings were not strange or unusual but normal for an individual suffering the bereavement experience. This a chance to unburden those bottled up feelings with those present all of whom understood your experience. A presentation followed on a particular theme of the bereavement process was shown by Patrick and discussed. Those present were of all ages, grief has no boundaries of age or gender. I left the session feeling stronger intending to attend future sessions. Respect for my fellow travellers, a greater understanding of my own feelings and those of others around me, now better able to rationalise and cope, feeling more positive for the future’. If this blog is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? We are here to help! Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. Do New Year Resolutions Work? How many of us actually stick to our New Year’s resolutions & see them through? We make all these promises to ourselves in January, but the reality is that we humans find it extremely difficult to change our inbuilt bad habits especially around dieting. We all have a little voice inside us that is incredibly good at sabotaging our efforts. If we take too much notice of it, we can end up with low self-esteem and self-worth, which for some people, spirals down into depression. So, we need to fight back – tell that little devil on your shoulder that you do deserve to feel good about yourself and enjoy the pleasures of life. The obvious place to start is with our health, which usually means our weight & fitness. Thinking positively helps massively – tell yourself you can do something, and the chances are you will, or at least you’ll have a go. Say ‘I can’t do ‌.’ and you won’t because you won’t even try - certain failure! Long term changes are more successful with 1-2-1 support especially as its all too easy to slip back into our old ways. Our primitive brain still encourages us to want more ‌ whether that’s chocolate, alcohol, screen time, or even just stuff! We really don’t need to binge on anything nowadays – it’ll still be there tomorrow‌.. Perhaps 2019 is the year you’d like to make some changes. THE 121 DIET with Cambridge Weight Plan has the 3 Ps.. the Products, the Plan and, especially, the People providing 1:1 support to help you succeed. A new you for 2019 could be just a phone call away... get in touch & we’ll find the Plan for you! I made that call ten years ago, it changed my life - you can too.! Best thing I ever did!! We Promise Not To Melt Your Face! Let’s hear it for the skin saving superhero ProPower Peel from DermalogicaŽ! If you’ve been following our social media you’ll know that I’m SUPER excited about this new suite of professional products and the new peel treatment from Dermalogica. I can barely contain my excitement because the peel is fast, effective and offers exceptional targeted results. So here’s a few things I want to share with you. Why peel? A valid question. Why would you want to get a chemical peel? If you are after real, corrective results on your skin then you should think about adding in a professional peel treatment to your routine. It is the fastest way to resurface the skin to target dullness, hyperpigmentation and signs of ageing. Provided you’re not contraindicated (which we can discuss during your consultation) it’s suitable for almost everyone and this new peel will be fully customisable to your skin. What is it? The peels are name driven: they do what they say on the label. Want to brighten your skin? Then you need the UltraBright peel. Do you want to target signs of ageing? That’s the AdvancedRenewal peel; OR do you suffer with blemishes and want clear skin? Boom, we’ve got you covered with PowerClear. If you have several concerns we can mix & match to suit your skin creating a completely unique peel just for you. We go into details of each peel during your consultation so you know exactly what is going on your skin. How often? We recommend a course of at least 3 but if you want to see a difference more quickly then you are looking at 6 or more treatments, with a minimum of 2 weeks in between. The break allows the skin to regenerate and repair itself ready for the next treatment. In all instances we recommend finishing a course with the 60 minute option so we can make sure your skin is well hydrated and protected. What type of person gets a peel? Anyone! Are you a bride looking for clear, glowing skin on your big day? OR are you more concerned with ageing, mature skin that needs a bit of perking up? Maybe you are an acne sufferer who wants to target blemishes and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation? We can customise a peel to your individual goals. For more information book in for a consultation and patch test and we can discuss a treatment plan. Beauty Gallery, 3 High Street, Lavenham CO10 9PX 01787 249595 - www.beautygallerylavenham.co.uk

Singing out the old‌ During December members of Hadleigh Community Choir enjoyed a range of festive singing opportunities. We did a guest turn at the Hadleigh folk club and entertained residents at two care homes. The main event was our own Christmas concert in URC. Thanks to a near capacity audience and their generosity, we were able to make a £200 donation to Little Lifts. This charity provides gift boxes to women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer at local hospitals. The boxes contain a range of treats from practical – like lip balm – to luxurious – like chocolate! They are very well received and provide a boost to wellbeing. ‌and singing in the new! Now members of the choir are returning back to rehearsals after our Christmas break. We're already looking forward to the summer when our concert theme will be music from the movies. We are just starting to learn the new repertoire so now is the perfect time to come and join us. Will your favourites be included - we'll cover James Bond, Mama Mia and much more besides! We are a friendly and welcoming choir and no audition is necessary. Come along to URC on Thursday at 7.15 or email for more information: contactus@hadleighcommunitychoir.org.uk. Or you can contact John 01473 823791 or Stella 01473 823477.

Pause For Thought I gave up too soon. I should have continued searching. A securely locked back door is a real pain with the only key mislaid. I really searched. Eventually the offer to saw off the lock with an angle grinder seemed sensible and a new lock fitted. It was messy and expensive. Within half an hour of the job completed, a visitor called. Had we lost a key? She had found one after I had visited her home. I should have carefully thought through the lost key day. Where had I been? Who had I seen? I imagined I had, but forgot the very visit where I had left the key. Have you ever thought there must be more to life than what you already have? Or felt yourself lost, perhaps? We were made to be in relationship with Almighty God. Unless we understand how much He loves us, unless we know He is our key to Heaven, we are indeed lost. Jesus chose to die for us on a cruel cross, to make it possible to be forgiven, found and free. God says “You will seek Me, and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29.13 Christine Hart

Suffolk Rockets Season started back after Christmas very quickly with a Suffolk Junior League Tournament on Sunday 6th January, the tournament was a mix of u14, u15 and u16 teams, due to lack of numbers the organisers decided to put all age groups into one group (7 in total), we entered an u14 (some girls u13) team, our girls did amazing and finished joint 2nd with Thetford u16, a huge achievement for our players. Our adult teams got straight back into the Colchester Adult League with some fantastic games in January, as they go into the second half of the season the change and improvements in their game is fantastic, all these ladies were 'Back to Netball' players and have come so far in such a short amount of time. For anyone thinking of coming back to Netball these ladies would tell you to 'just do it!' (Wednesdays 8-9.30pm hadleigh high School). On the 22nd December Suffolk Rockets set up a stand at Morrisons to promote the club and also many members of the club participated in bag packing, this was a fantastic day, we had so much interest in the club and we managed to raise enough money to buy more match skorts for our ever growing Junior Club, as well as money to buy equipment for our new Walking Netball Club. Thank you to everyone who supported us, we now have 60 junior members, 40 adult members and our walking netball club, Suffolk Rockets is based in Hadleigh and is supporting the whole community to get back into Netball. Our Walking Netball started in January and has been a great success, if you would like more information please visit our website, we will have sessions on the following dates from 9-10.30am at hadleigh high School indoor court £5 per session, just turn up! 9th February, 23rd February, 9th March, 23rd March, 6th April, 20th April www.suffolkrocketsnetballclub.weebly.com, suffolkrocketsnc@hotmail.com Facebook/Twitter/Instagram
Hadleigh Bowling Club Well life at the bowling club rocks on. Our league teams are facing mixed fortunes with Weavers consolidated in second place in League 2 and in serious danger of promotion while Spinners are currently sitting at the bottom of League 1. Members are as socially busy as ever having celebrated with a Christmas supper and New Year’s Eve dinner at The Bell in Kersey. Monthly Sunday lunches carry on as usual and the next big event is the Valentines Dinner Dance which turns even hardened bowlers a shade romantic, albeit all too briefly for some spouses. Meanwhile Graham Jones has been appointed as the new Vice-Captain and Sheila Larwill has agreed to be the Mixed Team Captain. Doug Doust relentlessly continues to ensure the green will be in perfect condition for the new season in the Spring and has been given a lifetime honorary membership for his commitment to the club over many years.

Hadleigh Hares This time of year it’s all about Cross Country. Hadleigh Hares had 12 runners competing at the Suffolk Cross Country Championships held at Culford School near Bury St Edmunds on 6th January. First up was Isla Widdowson who had a great run to finish 3rd U11. John, Dan, Danny and Scott Caitlin Foster had a at the County Champs strong run in the U17 category and will now go on to represent Suffolk at the Inter County Championships in Loughborough. Our Women's team was depleted through injuries, but Rachel Bodsworth finished an excellent 7th place in her age category and Fiona Holland was 2nd V60 in her first race for Hadleigh. The men's team had a very good day. In form Paul Lacey and Karl Feagan both continued where they left off from last year with fine runs. Scott Ramsey, Dan Widdowson, Dan Preece and John Scaife all finished in the top 30 and secured Hadleigh men’s team their first ever podium position at these Championships. Scott (9th overall) continued his excellent form in the early build up to the London Marathon and will go onto represent Suffolk at the Inter Counties event. 13th January saw the fourth race in the North Essex and South Suffolk XC league at Suffolk Food Hall. Another strong performance gave our men first place on the day and our ladies second. That places the Hares at the top of Pool B going in to the next race at Hadleigh on 10th February. Hare XC runner of the day was Paul Lacey. Our juniors also had another great event and congratulations to Elizabeth Rigby for winning the prize for the best Junior Hare.
Rams Win their League in Style The end of the regular season saw Hadleigh as champions of Eastern Counties Division 1 South with an impressive record of thirteen wins and only one loss. The Rams played their worst game of the season against a strong Bury side and could have no complaints about the heavy defeat. Hadleigh will now chase promotion with the leading teams from the other two Divisions. The first match of eight on February 9th is a home fixture against Newmarket. The benefit of winning their division is that the Rams will take nine points forward to the new league. (Colchester 3 by contrast will only carry forward one point by virtue of having lost twice to Hadleigh). The mid-season break gives the squad an opportunity to recuperate and work on several areas identified by coach Adam Miles as in need of improvement. This is an exciting time for the club which has benefitted hugely from the strength of our youth and minis sections. Over half the current first team squad is ‘home grown’. We do not rest on our laurels however and plans are already afoot to attract more players, sponsors, and supporters so that Hadleigh Rugby Club will go into its thirty fifth season ready to compete at all levels Any new or returning senior, youth or mini will be welcome at one of the friendliest clubs around. This is an exciting year for rugby with a fascinating Six Nations starting in February followed later in the year by the World Cup in Japan. Hadleigh United Football Club Website www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Facebook Hadleigh United Football Club - Official Well 2019 has certainly got off to an eventual year for the Club . On 9th January Club Chairman Rolf Beggerow received an e-mail from First Team Manager Shane Wardley stating with a "heavy heart and feeling gutted" after a long hard deliberation he had decided to resign with immediate effect from his position as he felt his plans to move the club forward were not working out as he had planned after 14 months in the role. The Chairman informed the Committee and we accepted Shane resignation and thanked him for his time and efforts. We have advertised this vacancy and hopefully by the time this edition of the magazine will have landed on your doors mats we should have Manager in place. Our Reserve Team Management duo ‘The Two Andys’ have stepped into the breech to look after First Team affairs until the new Manager has been appointed. First Team Match Round Up Following on from our 5-4 defeat at Whitton we hosted mid-table outfit Haverhill Rovers on 15th December and this tough encounter saw a point in a 2-2 drawn match. Next up a trip to North Suffolk to play Kirkley & Pakefield, we held our own in the first half against a strong K&P side which saw a goalless first half. K&P took a 59 minute lead, only for us to level from the restart when Kyle Cassell raced cleared to score. Four minutes later Brett Crisp put us ahead, but K&P came back at us to see us eventually lose 3-2. The only winner in this match was secretary Neil Henderson who won the ‘Golden Goal Ticket’! A crowd of 222 turned out to our home Boxing Day match against Stowmarket Town. A strong Stowmarket side were pegged back by ourselves, granted they took the lead in the 8th minute, but we played some positive football to hold them to their slender lead at half time, many commented that because of our lowly position we were going to be a ‘walk over’ and it took them until the 84th minute to ensure the win. Our last match 0f 2018 saw us make the short journey to Long Melford where despite creating chances we had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Romario Dunne & Brett Crisp putting us level after Melford took a single goal lead at half time and scoring their second early in the second half. Our first match of 2019 saw a long trip to Great Yarmouth where we suffered a 4-0 defeat which in fact turned out to be Shane's last match in charge. Yarmouth had been rooted at the bottom of the table, but had brought in some players on loan with this match seeing them record a run of winning five matches on the bounce. We were all feeling cold from the weather as were the ‘seagulls’ as I only counted about 6, and we could not even raise a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ to Wiggy Crawford. With our caretaker Managers "The two Andys" in charge our next match saw high flying Walsham-le-Willows the visitors again with several of their Supporters along with the players thining it was a case of ‘just turn up and we have the points’. Yes they did get the points but we did really make them work their socks off as we took the match to them and they only scored a single goal from a free kick from a defensive error in the 69th minute. Reserve Team Round Up Only two matches to report on both league matches ‘home and away’ unfortunately we lost both of these the away tie 2-0, the home tie 4-2 with Ben Regan & Fin Smith scoring our goals this match was taking place whilst we were at Gt Yarmouth. Their final league match of 2018 at Wivenhoe Town Res was postponed due to a water logged pitch. Under 18's Round Up Their last match of 2018 saw a trip to Needham Market on December 13th the 13th did not prove "unlucky" as they returned home with the points beating the hosts 5-0. January has seen them without any fixtures. Veterans Round Up Two matches to catch up on January 6th they travelled to Ipswich to take on Coplestonian Vets, despite being reduced to ten men early on we came away with a 6-3 victory with Paul Dodsworth recording another hat-trick, one apiece for Chris Dennett, Ben Woodfield & Matty Patrick. A stiff test for the Boys on 13th January as they travelled to Premier League side Bury Town Vets (we play division 4) this was a League Cup match with a result on the day. We took in a 4-1 half time lead with goals by Ben Goodchild (1) Stewart Wright (2) & Paul Dodsworth (1), Bury mounted a second half revival to level the scores 4-4 at 90 minutes the dreaded extra time was Bury score twice more to take the victory

Plenty is going on behind the scenes at the club as we wait for summer’s lease to be renewed. The first major works of the autumn was the installation of a heating system inside our recently extended pavilion, which means the club has become an even more inviting for events such as birthday parties and group meetings. So if you are looking for a venue to hire please contact Roger Daniels on 07768 258153. Other improvements are being made, including a refurb of the bar area and new furniture. Winter training begins on February 5th at St Josephs College in Ipswich, taking place every Tuesday from 7-9.30pm until 9th April. These sessions will be fully coached by qualified coaches and are open to all members and prospective members wanting to play adult cricket, including men, women and juniors. If you are new to the club and would like to attend you are more than welcome – in fact, we are very keen to recruit new players particularly at 2nd team men’s level. If you can’t attend the net sessions and would like to join the club please contact Head of Cricket Simon Manthorpe (07807 015672) or Secretary Gary Wiles (07503 966452). There will be a real buzz about the game this year, with the World Cup being held at home and England one of the favourites, as well as the Ashes to follow, so this is a great time to come back to cricket!
