Plans submitted for Babergh Offices Babergh District Council have submitted Planning Applications for 78 new homes in Hadleigh, with proposals to develop both the former council offices on Corks Lane and the former care home at Angel Court. The Planning Applications, validated and available on the council’s Planning Pages website, propose to build 53 dwellings on the site of the former Corks Lane offices, with an additional four homes proposed on just across the River Brett at Bridge House, along with 21 flats at the former Angel Court site.

The five listed buildings on the Corks Lane site will be repaired, refurbished and converted into residential accommodation to retain their distinctive presence on the site. In addition the office pavilions, constructed in the 1970s, will be converted into apartments rather than demolished, maintaining the backdrop to Hadleigh Cricket Ground. These proposals have been drawn up in consultation with heritage consultants to ensure the proposals cause the least possible harm to the buildings.

The open space immediately north of the River Brett, which forms a popular route for walkers, will also be retained as far as possible and continue to be publicly accessible. The plans include both maintaining as many of the existing trees on the site as possible, with replanting proposed to ensure there is no net-loss of trees. ...continued on page 5

Thanks to the generosity of the Coop and the work of the Community Gardens’ volunteers, the flower beds behind the store are full of miniature daffodil bulbs for next spring. Jane Snowdon and Glen Abbassi beavered away one morning to enrich the soil with the donated compost and then plant the bulbs. This will ensure the town has an additional impressive show of spring flowers near the bus station. Sadly, these beds are still being walked on and driven over in spite of the increase in foliage. Please remember both the hidden bulbs and the visible plants and avoid flattening the soil.

Vehicles accessing the Corks Lane site will continue to use Corks Lane, while those visiting the Bridge House site will use the current entrance route to the car park, meaning future use of the site will be via the same routes that were used by Babergh staff when the offices were operational.

By bringing both the former office site in Corks Lane and the former care home site at Angel Court back into use, these proposals will help Hadleigh continue to be the thriving market town we all know, while also helping meet the real housing need there is in the town.�

The proposals will now be considered by Babergh District Council’s Planning Officers before going to Babergh’s Planning Committee in the new year.

Our Dial a ride is an accessible transport service that can pick up passengers from their door and take to different destinations in and around Hadleigh. We regularly take several passengers into a Day Centre to enable them to have a lovely day out in the company of other people, to enjoy a hot meal and socialise. We can also provide transport to the doctors or dentists, the Co-op, Morrisons, or QD for shopping, take to lunch clubs or other activities in the town. Our Wheels within wheels is an accessible car that can accommodate a wheel chair user and is used for taking people out and about a bit further afield, shopping, visiting and hospital appointments. If you are unable to access normal public transport we may be able to help you get out and about, volunteer drivers provide these services â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Terry is one of our volunteers.

Why do I volunteer. I have been very lucky in my life with health and employment. I think Hadleigh is a lovely market town and now I'm retired I like to give something back in a small way for all the pleasure, help and benefits the town has given me over the last 20 years. This is hardly a chore as I enjoy driving the minibus and meeting the passengers. The dial a ride days are not long as they start after 9am and finish by 4pm so the driving is not particularly onerous. Dial a ride is fairly unique to Hadleigh, many other towns cannot boast such a good service. Many of our customers are elderly and unable to access public transport or even climb into a taxi. So, if the service did not exist, trips to the shops, doctors or dentist would be very difficult for them. A lot live on their own so would be in danger of becoming isolated if they didn't have an opportunity to get out from time to time.

Babergh District Council have planted a new Avenue of Oak Trees in Hadleigh to mark the centenary of the 1918 Armistice At a ceremony attended by district, county and town councillors alongside representatives of the Royal British Legion and the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk’s 2018 Committee, sixteen British Oaks were planted in Hadleigh’s Beaumont Park. Children from Hadleigh High School and Beaumont Community Primary School took part in the ceremony, which included a rendition of Amazing Grace, before the final tree was planted by Cllr Margaret Maybury, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Babergh Armed Forces Champion. The ceremony concluded with a wreath laying to the sound of The Last Post, before the traditional two minutes silence.

Babergh has a longstanding connection to the military, with the airbase at Wattisham Airfield having been in use by the RAF and then British Army for almost eighty years. Many military families still live in Hadleigh, where the oaks have been planted.

Representatives of The Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project, which has been commemorating the First World War in Hadleigh throughout 2018, was also present at the ceremony.

The proposal to plant memorial oaks was put forward by the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk’s 2018 Committee, which was established to oversee commemorations of the First World War in the centenary year of the 1918 Armistice, and carried out by Babergh District Council.

Cllr Margaret Maybury, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said “In Babergh we live in a district steeped in history and sacrifice. From the streets of Medieval Lavenham to the airfield of Wattisham to the ancient ports on our coasts we have witnessed the dedication of local people in times of national need. Hadleigh Parkside Pre-School November was a great month for us at Parkside preschool! We have taken part in lots of activities including themes of; fireworks, Armistice day and children in need!

On the 7th November we had a member of the armed forces, Sergeant John Kirtland, join us for a presentation. He brought lots of goodies for the children to look at including some helmets, photographs of soldiers, old and new, and some medals. The children enjoyed looking through and trying on all the different items, Wow, those helmets are heavy!

A few upcoming dates to remember; 8th December is our Christmas morning 10am12pm. Come along to join in with crafts, games and seeing Santa – Free Entry. Our last day of term is the 19th December. We have very limited spaces left for January, so if you are thinking of a January start, please get in contact quickly to arrange a visit and some trial sessions.

During December, we are offering “Shopping days” to our current parents and the wider community. Care for children from 9am-3pm will be offered at just £20! Book in soon to avoid disappointment.

Lastly, we are also taking bookings for February half term holiday club. Dates 18th-22nd February 2019, £25 a day inclusive of all our wonderful trips and activities! Over £1,000 of prizes up for grabs in local Christmas Prize Draw One local family run hearing care company has announced details of a charity Christmas Prize Draw, giving the local community the chance to win one of twelve prizes with a combined value of over £1,000.

The Hearing Care Centre, which has 26 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk including one at Health By Design, Hadleigh, is holding its annual Christmas Draw in aid of deafness charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, with the winners being declared on Wednesday 19th December 2018.

As Christmas approaches, we are having great fun here at Playstation getting into the festive spirit. The children have been learning about; Autumn, festivals, vehicles, musicals, favourite characters and Christmas. We have also enjoyed trips to the library, where each child chose a book to take back to Playstation. Hadleigh Cycling Club members have enjoyed another fruitful year. We have continued to build on the Club’s ethos, “cycling for all” with a successful Junior season, a course for novice female cyclists and a sportive for all abilities. (And it has helped that we’ve enjoyed glorious weather.)

It would be impossible to do this without a very active committee who volunteer, coach and promote the Club. It is important to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Simon King, our Secretary. Together with the coaching team, he has run the Junior sessions at the Primary School. Parents who have witnessed their children develop as confident and skilful cyclists have expressed their gratitude for the dedication of coaches and helpers.

For the third year, we have delivered the Get Back on Your Bike course for women. As a result, we have seen more women and girls either joining social rides or arranging ad hoc rides with friends. Adult social rides have always been an important element of the Club’s activities. They have been organised

by Chris Heron who has now stood down from the committee. He has been a stalwart of the Club since its inception and he leaves big cleats to fill.

We have successfully organised a 4th Gayford Flyer sportive. We were inundated with volunteers and over 170 cyclists of all ages enjoyed a safe and memorable experience.

At our AGM on 7th December we will be presenting a cheque for £500 for Prostate Cancer UK to Paul Spraggons, in acknowledgement of his incredible efforts this year (and in 2019) to raise money for the cause.

Why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 9am, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. Age UK estimate that 2.65m people over 65 face their problems alone It was heart warming to see local children at an Age UK Suffolk day centre recently in the local press learning first hand of the loneliness and isolation of our ageing population in the region.

15,000 people over the age of 65 in Suffolk are reportedly feeling they have no one to turn to for help and support. Age UK estimate that 2.65m people over 65 face their problems alone.

Whilst neighbours or friends can drop by for a chat and a cup of tea, it is more difficult to advise when issues concerning finances are raised. We all have a responsibility to the elderly, particularly our own Kay Baker family members. Whilst we cannot always be close by and often have to rely on neighbours and friends of our loved ones to help them on a daily basis, we should endeavour to check that they are keeping their finances in order. For example, with the demise of so many local banks and post offices, they may feel unable to access their pension easily or understand tax or benefit forms and calculations. Local community groups play a vital role and Age UK can help with benefit queries and entitlements as well as offer many other services.

Whilst technology for many of us saves time and opens up more choice and instant opportunity, for the elderly it can create barriers to communication and deny opportunity to chat things through at a pace they are comfortable with.

The Gotelee team can help when a family need to consider doing more than just a regular check to see if a loved one is managing OK in relation to their financial affairs. Peace of mind that a Will is up to date is of course one area, but families also speak to us about tax issues and retirement or nursing home funding. We also provide advice around the sensitive issue of living Wills. A living Will documents the wishes of a loved one through illness and incapacity.

Families may also like to discuss a Lasting Power of Attorney. Once arranged this appoints an individual or individuals to help an elderly person manage their affairs. I don't know about you, but I'm getting excited for Christmas! December is a busy time for everyone. Shopping, parties, family get together's, card writing, wrapping presents, eating too many mince pies. Eating to many mince pies?

Oh perhaps that's just me! If you're one of the HADS team you'll know there's no time off from rehearsals for mince pie eating! Every Sunday they're working so hard to bring us their amazing pantos. This years panto Beauty and the Beast is being played out in the URC over 4 showings in February, brought to life under the direction of Trevor Clarke and Russel Allen.

I had another chance to see these wonderful people practising their lines and songs. I even got a quick chat with the one and only Beast and ask him a few questions.

So Mr Beast, you're a big guy, how did you achieve some an impressive structure? “Well, thank you very much, my diet is mostly protein. Hadleigh villagers are my favourite."

Hadleigh is a town Mr Beast! “Is it? (looks very cross) Are you questioning my intelligence?”.

Oh no my goodness, I wouldn't do that. Do you like to keep fit? “Yes I do, I enjoy running up the railway walk, or a swim at The Leisure Centre” I couldn't help but notice this music box, what's it for? “None of your business!” Well that told me! I let him carry on with the rest of the team.

Seasons Greetings from Hadleigh Osteopaths The Hadleigh Osteopaths clinic is at Hadleigh Pool and leisure, Stonehouse Road. We will be open as usual until the end of the day on Friday December 21st, and open for emergency appointments on Thursday 27th December at our Sudbury branch at The Kingfisher. This is often a very busy time for everybody. Mums and dads are trying to squeeze Christmas shopping in around work; kids are busy with concerts and plays, and everybody wants the house to be ready for guests to come and stay. The last thing that anybody wants is a bad back or a sore neck to ruin the fun, or get in the way of being ready for the holidays.

We often get a frantic phone call from patients before we are due to close for the Christmas break saying that ‘their back has just gone” or “they really need to be seen before Christmas” just as our staff are packing up to go home to their own families. Sometimes this is just the result of the person struggling to get all their tasks done before the world stops on Christmas Eve, but often the case history reveals someone who has had niggles for a while, and just left it to the last minute to come and get it sorted out. Don’t let this be you! If you are aware that you have a back ache or a stiff neck, come and get it looked at now. No one wants to be the miserable person at the Christmas lunch table, or the person unable to join in the fun and games because they can’t get dressed or get down to the presents under the tree. If you think you may have a problem we can help with, ring us now and then you and your family have a better chance of having a very happy Christmas.

VACANCY FOR THE POSITION OF SERVICES OFFICER Hadleigh Town Council is seeking to employ a Services Officer due to the retirement of the current post holder.

The Services Officer undertakes the day-to-day management of the Council’s outdoor assets which include Layham Road Sports Ground, Hadleigh Cemetery, Allotments and Playgrounds. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As attention turns to Christmas – and a welcome escape from Westminster drama – it falls on me to make my annual festive appeal. It’s very simple: please support our local shops, pubs, restaurants, kiosks, markets, social events and village halls. For all the gloom around the future of the high street, we have some fantastic outlets in South Suffolk to buy gifts or enjoy a few hours of pleasant socialising. I hope that all readers take full advantage.

Of course, some may say – so what are you doing about it and what action is the Government taking? Personally, I always try to support my local farm shop, particularly with an order for a locally reared turkey, and if we eat out it’s usually at one of the excellent pubs in the constituency where the standard of dining continues to go from strength to strength. It is unrealistic to expect everyone to do all of their Christmas shopping in local family owned stores, and I imagine most people reading this article will do a fair chunk of their shopping online and at supermarkets, as well as in smaller shops. But we can all ‘do our bit’, and I am included in that.

As for the Government, we should be clear that there is no easy answer to the structural challenges facing businesses that sell via conventional retail premises. The rise of internet shopping has been blistering, and has brought many economic advantages, driving down prices in a range of retail channels.

But, as the headlines of well-known chains struggling to adapt have underscored, these are challenging times.

Thus, for me, a priority has been a fairer tax system, so that shops and family firms pay lower business rates, and - without hitting internet start-ups - megawealthy web firms contribute more. I therefore warmly welcomed the Budget’s twin track approach: cutting business rates for small business rates by up to a third; introducing a new tax on ‘tech giants’.

However and wherever you spend this festive break, my I take this opportunity to wish you and your family the very best for Christmas and the new year.

Library Life: Open (nearly) all hours It is that time of year again to send good cheer and happy wishes to all. (Not that we shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be doing that all the other months, anyway.) But there is something about Christmas which gives us the imperative to take the time and make a bit more of an effort to get in touch with those we care about. At the library, it is lovely to chat to people and hear how their Christmas plans are taking shape. Many are busy writing and sending cards to those they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see often, there are preparations being made for visits both near and far and food arrangements are already in the planning!

But, this season can also be a very lonely time for some; perhaps missing loved ones who are no longer around, or maybe knowing very few people to speak to daily. At your local library, everyone is welcome. Whether it is to browse a selection of books to borrow to keep you busy over the holiday or to rent a DVD to share with the family or enjoy on your own; to use the computers to get in touch with friends and family far away or just to be in the warm, near people and to spend a little time reading the newspaper; we enjoy seeing each-and-every one of you. Hadleigh Library is closed on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th December and open as usual from Thursday. We will be closed Tuesday January 1st. Margaret will talk about the research and preparation for her book including information (from the documents) on the church in the medieval period. She will sign copies of her book.

The earliest known documented Lord of the Manor of Hadleigh (A much-abridged extract from Margaret’s book Medieval Hadleigh) This was Ealdorman Byrhtnoth/Bryhtnoth in the late 10th century. An ealdorman was a high-ranking nobleman and Byrhtnoth, at the time of his death in 991, was senior ealdorman to King Aethelred. McSween claims Byrhtnoth was the ‘kingdom’s most experienced general and senior active ealdorman’ - exalted status endorsed by Abels: ‘probably the most influential layman in England after the king’. Byrhtnoth was reputed to be religious, fairminded and capable of inspiring deep devotion; he was of noble blood, enormously wealthy and owner of a great deal of land within England.

In August 991 Byrhtnoth faced the Vikings at Maldon in Essex across from Northey Island. The resulting battle was reportedly hard fought with Byrhtnoth fighting bravely in the front rank although believed to be at least sixty years old.

Our Hadleigh lord has been both blamed and praised for allowing the Vikings over the causeway at Northey Island – blamed because of the eventual defeat and praised because it was deemed, if he had not, the enemy would have departed to ravage elsewhere around the coast. Also much injury was inflicted on his opponents. Byrhtnoth was beheaded and, since no head was found, it is believed it was taken as a trophy.

Another source, Byrhtferth’s Life of Oswald, describes Bryhtnoth as whitehaired and over six foot tall (1.8 metres). In 1769 when Bryhtnoth’s coffin (entombed in Ely Cathedral after the Battle of Maldon) was opened, inside was a male skeleton with a ball of wax where the head would have been confirming Byrhtnoth’s head had indeed been chopped off, probably by a battle axe or two-handed sword. A Dr Hunter then measured Byrhtnoth’s thigh bone and ratified his height as certainly over six foot. Byrhtnoth’s remains are stored in Bishop West’s chapel in Ely Cathedral.

Forthcoming publication

Medieval Hadleigh Out in December 2018 is Margaret Woods’ authoritative account of life in Medieval Hadleigh with special emphasis on the 13th & 14th centuries.

Margaret’s primary source of information is her own translations from Latin of the manorial records from the medieval Manor of Hadleigh.

In her depiction of the medieval town and manor the real experiences of numerous long-gone Hadleigh residents are recounted and day-to-day activities described - all supported with excerpts from the original manuscripts, colourful illustrations and straightforward tables.

The Big Sing Gospel Concert Success The Big Sing 2018 took place at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh on Saturday 29th September and once again welcomed a huge crowd of around 170 local residents that enjoyed an evening of music and laugher while raising money for two great causes.

Beneficiaries this year once again included the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance that is supporting Hadleigh to become a dementia friendly community and the Royal British Legion.

Conductor Jon Rattenbury say’s “with the heavenly sounds of our fantastic Gospel Music the Big Sing is always a wonderful evening and we were delighted to be back. This is the fourth time that we have joined you in Hadleigh to perform and the choir were honoured to do so, we hope you all enjoyed the evening as much as we did”.

Barbara Boyd says: ‘It did our hearts so good to see you all at this concert.

Almost £800 was raised on that night, thank you all so much.’

Rotary Club of Hadleigh Diary Christmas Collections: Christmas is almost here again and the Club is preparing the float for its traditional journey around Hadleigh. As always, Father Christmas will accompany it and visit as many children as possible. The collection will be for local charities and organisations serving Hadleigh and the surrounding district so please give as generously as you can. If you do still have any old ÂŁ1 coins which you have found in the sofa etc and would like to get rid of these , please put them in the collection. District Conference: This year the event was held at Ipswich Showground conference centre and 3 members of the Club attended. There were a number of presentations on a variety of subjects including Sudbury Club Crucial Crew day, Teenage Cancer Trust, Shelterbox and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards when two young people who had recently completed this years course spoke about their experiences and the benefits that they had gained. They pointed out that without the training received on the course they would not have had the confidence to speak to such a large audience. A representative of the Rotary International President was also in attendance and he delivered an inspiring message from Rotary HQ. Speaker: District Governor, David Simpson, paid the Club his annual visit and he praised the Club for its progress in gaining members during the past 2 years. He was also pleased to find that there was a good mix of men and women. He emphasised the Rotary motto of 'service above self' as well as the importance of supporting Rotary's own charity The Rotary Foundation which is one of the largest charitable organisations in the world through which Clubs assist poverty, famine, education and water supplies in the third world as well as driving the eradication of polio during the last thirty years or so.

RYLA: The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards scheme was mentioned earlier.

Pause For Thought Occasionally, for some people, when they start to get out of bed in the morning, they have to ask themselves, â&#x20AC;&#x153;What day is it?â&#x20AC;? and it isn't only those who were born in the last century!

It can be more difficult to work out for those who live on their own. Although, we are surrounded by the world that God created a long time ago and there are changes in weather conditions, during the year, as the season's change which helps us have an idea what time of year it is, sometimes, sitting there, as we recover from a night's sleep it could be April or even November. I marvel at the colours around me, different shades of colour each season. When the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;what day is it struggleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; happens to me, I turn the radio on to find out what day it is. But even then, we still have to work out how we are going to spend the 1,440 minutes we have available to us each day. God's Word, the Bible, gives a lot of advice about how to spend our days.

When we put our trust in God, we can be sure of meeting Him on one future day. His son, Jesus took the punishment, for our disobedience, by being crucified. We have broken the laws, that God set out for us, but Jesus paid the price with His death.

Hares Juniors at Witham Cross Country The winter season is now upon us and the multisport season is officially over for the year. All the summer running events are done and the competitive focus now shifts mainly to Cross Country. Previously known as the 53-12 league the recently renamed North Essex South Suffolk Cross Country League has now held two of its events for the 2018-19 season. The first, on 28th October, was hosted by Springfield Striders at Writtle Agricultural College near Chelmsford.

Following the same format as previous years, the juniors went off first, enjoying a bright, warm autumn morning for their one mile run. Overall the team came eighth with the junior runner award going to Thomas Davis. The senior run took the field on a five mile loop out into the wilds of Writtle via the reservoir behind the college. A few lumps and bumps along the way and some tricky side slopes made for an interesting run. Our three scoring ladies, Maria Ward, Rachel Bodsworth and Caitlin Fosker brought us home in first place in the Pool B ladies race while our men finished in third place thanks in part to the efforts of runner of the day, Paul McAllister.

Having secured 3rd place in the league at Writtle, the next event was at the Discovery Centre at Great Notley, hosted by Witham Running Club. A slightly different flavour of course, the senior race includes two ascents of the steep artificial hill next to the visitor centre and an undulating run around the Country Park and surrounding countryside. As usual, the juniors went first, again finishing eighth against some tough opposition, particularly from the larger Pool A clubs. This time, the junior runner of the week was Ruby Avis. In the senior race our ladies again came a fabulous first with Angela Wray joining in with the scoring. The men again came in third, with Dan Widdowson finishing in eleventh place. Added to the ladies placing this put us in overall second on the day, cementing our third position in Pool B. Well done to Karl Feagan who walked away with the senior runner’s award for the day.

Next time out will be at Harwich, a notoriously muddy and arduous slog around the fields of Ramsey on 25th November. Sounds like fun!

Hadleigh Hares are a friendly local athletics club catering for all levels and abilities from jogging beginners to marathoners and Ironman triathletes. It is a fun and friendly way of getting or keeping fit. If you fancy coming along and joining at whatever level please contact us at chair@hadleighhares.co.uk or via Facebook. There is a beginners/improvers session every Monday evening at 7pm meeting at Hadleigh Pool, and we run a session for ladies only on a Tuesday as well as more advanced running, and mixed ability swimming and cycling sessions throughout the week.

It must be a sign – The Sequel In 2015, with the invaluable assistance of our MP, James Cartlidge, I managed to arrange for a new sign at junction 31 on the A12, showing Hadleigh as the main destination rather than East Bergholt.

The matter took a great deal of persistence with Highways England, so we were delighted when it happened.

But last year, you may have noticed that visitors started missing the junction for Hadleigh again: the new sign had disappeared and the original sign returned.

Well, I pursued Highways England and, at first, they were at a loss to explain the change.

However, through detective work on their part, it transpired that the Hadleigh sign had been destroyed in an accident and for an unknown reason the original sign erected.

Highways England agreed to restore the Hadleigh exit sign and while they were doing this, Highways England also looked into all the signs for the Hadleigh exits, in both direction, so all are now, hopefully, correct and in place.

I hope Hadleigh residents are now pleased to have our Hadleigh A12 exit sign back in place.

Going away for Christmas or relatives visiting? Students coming home for the festivities? Before all the bags are packed, please make sure you and your guests check your prescription medication and some just-in-case medications so you can chill out and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year!

We’re not asking you to prepare for every illness imaginable, just a small bag with the most necessary pills and medicine. After all, nobody wants to be taken ill during the festive season. It might be easy enough to pick up a domestic remedy over the counter, but some medicines may be limited to prescription only. The same goes for allergy meds and asthma remedies, bring them with you! If you need to travel with your prescription medication, use a pill organizer.

Keeping the medicine you need well stocked and at the ready means you won’t have to interrupt your celebrations with a trip to the doctor or the pharmacy.

Could it be lonely this Christmas? Loneliness is a reality for too many people today. It can affect anyone of any age and background. Across our communities there are people who can go for days, weeks or even a month without seeing friend or family member. Although estimates for the number of older people who spend Christmas alone can vary - in Hadleigh we estimate 1,300 over 65s face the prospect of Christmas alone - research and anecdotal evidence is clear that Christmas is a particularly painful time for anyone, young or old, who experiences loneliness throughout the year.

This Christmas we want to change that, but we need you. We’ve come up with a few simple things you can do to help tackle loneliness, and make everyone feel more connected at Christmas.

• The Christmas Present Trust. If you know of someone in the community who cannot be with family or friends on Christmas Day call 01473 829246 to arrange an invitation to Christmas Dinner.

• Take the time to talk with an older person. You could be out shopping, at the pub or out for a walk. But just say a simple hello and it could make a difference to someone who’s lonely.

• Take the time to call the friends and family that you won’t see this Christmas.

A ten-minute phone call can have a big impact.

• Deliver a Christmas card to your neighbour and stop for a chat. Start a conversation and make a connection.

• Share a mince pie moment by baking or buying some mince pies and sharing with your friends and neighbours.

• Spare chair at your table? Know a neighbour who might be alone? Invite them to join you for Christmas dinner.

• Hosting a Christmas party? If there’s anyone in your community who might be alone, send them an invite. The more the merrier!

My cousin and friend Bubba passed away in early November. He was found in his bungalow on November 5th by a friend. Hadleigh will not see another like him. Bubba was a real old Hadleigh character, always telling jokes, some of which he made up himself.

Many people got to know Bubba when he was walking in his favourite area of the Conch and Broomhill in Hadleigh. Bubba was well know for his catapult skills, poaching was another, myself and others used to go out with him with our catapults in all weathers from October to February. He still carried his catapult with him every day whilst out on his walks, telling me that he gets a few pheasants ‘to order’.

Bubba worked for Biggs Wall in his younger days, he used to go in the pubs in his work gear, donkey jacket and jack boots, even to dances, sometimes being chucked out of them. He was a heavy drinker as most of us who knew him could see, whiskey being his favourite. Bubba liked going into the slip at the Monkey in Benton Street, on many occasions I saw him leaving the Monkey ‘as drunk as a lord’, falling against parked cars and front doors etc. and I would have to get his chicken and chips from Jasmine House. He would always buy ours as well on occasions.

This would have been in the late 80’s when Bubba worked for a short time at Wattisham Airfield building the hangers. He would leave home at 5.00 am, this was to give him enough time to shoot pheasants that he would then sell to his work mates. This was during the winter, on his push bike and after a heavy night of drinking. Bubba was very kind hearted he gave money to many people over the last few years. He often gave £20 to the lady selling books in the High Street, and many more other people took money from him. There is so much I could write about Bubba, but at this time it’s best to keep it short and remember the better times with him.

Many have asked how Bubba got his nickname, well my mother who was his first cousin to us when he was a small child said he would call out ‘Bubba Bubba’ when he saw a sheep or lamb in a field. I asked him if this was true, he just laughed and said “don’t be stupid”.

Bubba told us that he never wanted to get very old or end up in an old peoples home, so in the end his wish came true. I think he knew he wasn’t well, he often told me he wouldn’t be in this world much longer, but he had been saying that for years.

Bubba, I suppose looking back on his life lived quite a good healthy one as he had never been to the doctors during his adult life, that’s very hard to believe, but its true. We always said that he must have a strong immune system. Very rarely did I ever see him with a cold, not even a smokers cough, and he smoked from 12 years old, or so he told us. He seemed to be able to stick the cold weather, standing in different shop doorways in the High Street over the years wearing a tatty old jumper and his famous donkey jacket, with only one button done up. But in the last 3 or 4 years I could see things were changing in his behaviour, feeling the cold, losing weight and drinking more than he should. Bubba never really trusted people, he liked his own company, I think the drinking must of made him feel more relaxed around people, but it could also make him more aggressive, but not in a fighting way as I can’t ever remember seeing him fighting back.

He still kept telling those jokes though right to the very end.

News from St Mary’s Primary School Remembrance has been very much on our minds at St Mary’s. On 8 November, year 5 joined children from other local schools at Hadleigh Cemetery. Mark Brennan gave us a brief history of the soldiers buried in the 10 war graves of the cemetery. We learned that one of the soldiers had been a member of a cavalry regiment, which was especially interesting as the class is currently enjoying listening to ‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo.

One member of the class, who has a connection to the Leeks family, was privileged to place a small wooden cross and a special marker to commemorate 100 years since the end of WW1 by the headstone of one of the two Leeks brothers.

As the church clock struck eleven, we joined in a short act of remembrance and a minute’s silence. Meanwhile, St Mary’s and Hadleigh Community Primary School children who live in Layham went to St Andrew’s to research the history of the 19 Layham soldiers who died in the First World War. Thanks to Michael Woods, Brian Hempstead and Sonia Groom for making this a memorable occasion for the children. On 9th November the whole school gathered at St Mary’s church, together with many parents and friends, for a service, led by the children, of singing, bible readings, prayers and an act of remembrance. It was a very moving tribute.

Collective Worship As usual, we have had many visitors in from local churches and other organisations to lead our assemblies and enrich the children’s experience. We are grateful to everyone who gives up their time in this way. Year 6 enjoyed a visit to St Nicholas Centre, Ipswich, to lead worship at the Church School Leaders’ Conference for Headteachers and Governors from church schools across the Diocese. They created their own play script and Lego scenes based on the Bible story about Jesus wanting the little children to be brought to him. They spoke with great confidence and helped all those in attendance to reflect on the theme of ‘dignity’.

This term our Christian values have been ‘generosity’ and ‘compassion’. We invited parents and friends in to join our ‘Kindness’ cafes, which linked with schools’ anti-bullying week. Year 1 heard the story of ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and made their own clay fish, lavishly decorated with sequins! Year 2 listened to ‘Super Worm’ and made pictures and masks of their own superheroes. Year 3 made kindness posters and a kindness paperchain for the classroom which will be added to as they record their deeds of kindness. Year 4 produced art work on the theme of ‘Horton Hears a Who’. Years 5 and 6 joined forces to make a kindness quilt which will show off their design and printing techniques!

It was certainly a busy and fun-packed afternoon, with lots of visitors from our school community to share the activities with the children. Thanks to all the parents and friends who joined us for this special occasion.

Classic Literature Week During this exciting week, all the children enjoyed a lively production of ‘Oliver Twist’ given by M&M Theatre Productions.

Afterwards, the actors gave workshops to year 6 who learned about lighting and scenery. This will come in handy when they prepare their own summer term production! All year groups produced work based on classic literature for parents and friends to share after school at the end of the week – there was a lovely display of children’s writing in the hall.

The Mud Kitchen! The children in EYFS would like to say a huge thank you to Martin Jarrald who has built them a superb mud kitchen in their courtyard. This will enhance the early years experience by developing imagination, cooperative play and physical skills, and will also be masses of fun!

Sport Children from St Mary’s have enjoyed attending various events this term, including cross country and dodgeball tournaments. Year 6 took two teams to Hadleigh High School to take part in the rugby festival. These were occasions of brilliant participation, with opportunities for lots of learning and laughing!

The children represented the school well, encouraging one another and showing great team spirit.

Thursday 15th September, 2018 Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson (Hadleigh North Ward) I should like to take this opportunity of thanking the British Legion for the exceptionally well organised Armistice Day and celebrations. This year in particular was a historic remembrance and gratitude to those that gave their lives.

It is wonderful that the community, and business came together to produce such outstanding tributes to local Hadleigh men that gave their lives. The shop windows were really quite spectacular, everyone made such a concerted effort, so thank you all.

Boundary Commission - The Boundary Commission has confirmed its anticipated recommendations for restructuring the current Babergh Ward patterns, Hadleigh will remain as two Wards and the number of District Councillors will come down from 43 to 32. Hadleigh North will be reduced from 2 to 1 Councillor. As regards my position, I offered myself for reselection and was adopted as the Conservative candidate for the new Hadleigh North Ward.

Private Sector Housing - Following a recalculation using the govt’s formula, Babergh DC now has a 5-year land supply for the private sector housing. This will allow the Planning Committee more flexibility when assessing planning applications than has been the case over the last two year or so. For information, Mid Suffolk thought that they also had regained a 5-year land supply but an appeal against a refusal in Drinkstone has turned that back into deficit.

Merger of Babergh & MSDCs - You may be aware that the proposal to merge MS with Babergh was put on hold until Suffolk CC had the results of a study initiated by Colin Noble (the then Leader) into a Unitary Authority solution for Suffolk. The new Leader (Matthew Hicks) is less enthusiastic about the concept and he has pressed the “pause” button with the study. My expectation is that merger Babergh/MS will be back on the Agenda in the not too far distant future, however when this was raised this at a recent Council Meeting as assurance was given it would not be on the agenda prior to the next local elections in May 2019.

Car Parking in Babergh - You may have seen articles in the local papers suggesting that car parking charges are about to be introduced into Babergh.

To resolve any uncertainty, the Leader of Babergh DC has assured me that he does not see a case for bring in car parking charges in Babergh. I am firmly against the introduction of any car parking fees as this would have a negative impact on business and our local community.

Disposal of Corks Lane Buildings - The recommendation for redevelopment of the old Babergh Council offices (about 56 houses/flats) will go before the Planning Committee this month. I shall be watching closely the detail and that the development will be starting expediently.

Other Good News Headlines • Following the move to Ipswich, I have lobbied for Hadleigh to have a facility to access Babergh. It has been agreed a “pop up points” will be in the Hadleigh library Thursday afternoons 1 pm to 5 pm for residents who need advice and don’t want/can’t get to Sudbury. This commenced Thursday 18th October 2018, as a trial for 3 months. Please try to get this around Hadleigh and please advise me if you find it’s not working • The 100% business rate retention trial for Suffolk in 2018/19 has been a valuable tool for important projects, but will not continue in its present format.

Instead, we expect another trial to be implemented for 2019/20 with a 75% retention.

• Budget pressure is manageable currently with a requirement to find approximately £2M over the next 4-year period. This can be achieved without cutting back on services. The next budget brief is in Jan 2019. I will keep you advised.

• A major redevelopment plan for Sudbury has been launched by Babergh DC. Details can be found on the website.

On Saturday 1st December Chelsworth will once again be holding a Christmas Fair in All Saint’s Church. The beautiful medieval church will be full of Christmas atmosphere, with stalls selling gifts, crafts and foodstuffs. There will also be second-hand books, bric-a-brac and a bottle tombola. Seasonal refreshments in the shape of mince pies and mulled wine will be served all day and hot soup will be available at lunch time.

You will also be able to buy raffle tickets for a chance to win one of the famous Chelsworth Christmas Hampers.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Hadleigh Community Choir.

Chelsworth is a pretty village situated alongside the river Brett, on the B1115, between Bildeston and Monks Eleigh. Our very welcoming village pub, The Peacock Inn, is nearby for those seeking a more substantial lunch. So why not kick off your festive season with a visit to Chelsworth? Hadleigh Community Primary School Armistice Centenary On Friday 9th November, 2018, the whole of HCPS commemorated the Armistice Centenary with the theme of No Barriers. The whole school stopped and we were joined by governors and members of the wider school community.

The children marched down to the field singing It's a Long Way to Tipperary carrying poppies that they had made in class. The School Council gave a speech explaining why we were there and how the poppy came to be our symbol of remembrance. They also talked about Walter Tull, a footballer and WWI hero who overcame barriers. Then we watched a football match to promote equality, with children of all ages and mixed gender played on each side; a game where the score didn't matter, only that we remember. After the game, soloists gave a haunting rendition of Keep the Home Fires Burning, followed by the School Council reading the poem In Flanders Fields. Mrs Hawkes played the Last Post on her bugle before a minute silence. As the children left the field, they laid the 100 clay poppies they had made to represent the 100 years since the end of WWI in the central garden.

The HSA provided the children with hot chocolate & Mrs Harvey made 700 poppy biscuits. We were honoured to be joined by Mr Davis & Mr Brennan from the Legion.

EYFS - Reception Reception were very shocked to discover there had been a crash landing in the outside sandpit, and it looked like aliens! The children have been on a hunt to discover if the aliens are still around, tracking the footprints that were left behind and measuring them to discover the size of the aliens. They have been busy trying to fix the spaceship while also making playdough alien friends, I wonder if the aliens will return for their spacecraft?

Key Stage 1 - Year 2 In Year 2 we have been very busy rehearsing for our play, which was based on the story of Grace Darling.

The children performed to the school on Monday and Tuesday mornings and to the parents on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th afternoons.

They performed brilliantly and everyone was impressed by their standard of performance.

Sport On Thursday 18th October 2018, Hadleigh CPS entered a team in the Under 9's Girls Football Festival at Ipswich Town Football Club. There were a total of 14 schools that took part in the event.

Hadleigh were put into League 3 where we played matches against St. Mary's Woodbridge, Gusford, East Bergholt, Chelmondiston and Ipswich High.

The girls played brilliantly throughout the afternoon, managing to win 3 games and draw 2 games, resulting in the team finishing the festival undefeated. Well done girls, a great achievement!

On Friday 2nd November 2018, we participated in the Year 5/6 Hadleigh Pyramid Schools at Hadleigh High School. There were 7 schools at the festival in total. As well as us, the other schools were: Beaumont, St. Mary's A, St. Mary's B, Whatfield, Elmsett and Bildeston. This was a round robin festival, meaning every team played each other during a 10 minute match. Hadleigh were on top form all morning with their speed, agility and ball distribution, and won all six of their matches.

Hadleigh Steering Group Minutes Hadleigh Leisure Centre Monday 5th Nov 2018 @ 4.15pm Chair Ian Grutchfield who welcomed attendees to the open-to-all community forum for sharing and collaboration of groups and projects concerning Hadleigh. Previous October Meeting minutes agreed.

Guest Speaker: Sally Connick Community Action Suffolk Good Neighbour Scheme Development Officer. The Good Neighbour scheme is a nationwide programme, currently there are 38 schemes across Suffolk.

Each scheme has a telephone number that is promoted to all in the community, which provides a contact for anyone seeking some extra help with low level tasks. These can be varied and each scheme considers what they can and canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t manage but typically includes, shopping, help with pets, changing lightbulbs, lifts etc. The telephone number is managed, usually on a rota by a team of volunteers, they then have a team of people from within the community who have identified themselves as willing to help. These volunteers set their availability and the type of tasks that they are willing and able to help with and this information is kept by those managing the phones. When someone contacts the telephone number, this register is referred to and the volunteers contacted to see if they can help. The schemes benefit many people, opening a wider circle of support to those who need it, and offering additional support to people who already help neighbours in their community but are finding that increasingly demanding. The schemes can also help coordinate need referrals where these are identified, and CAS provide support with that. Each scheme requires a committee group of between 4 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 6 people, plus volunteers. They take time to set up but anyone can volunteer, although everyone must have a DBS check and the group will require insurance. There are some set up costs; ÂŁ500 - 600 and an annual cost of ÂŁ200 - ÂŁ300.

Elsewhere attracting volunteers hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been an issue but it takes a while to attract service users.

Community transport would be keen to work alongside any good neighbour scheme so are worth consulting when planning a scheme If there is any interest in starting a scheme in the Hadleigh area then Community action Suffolk can offer help to ensure that both volunteers and service users are there. These are generally hosted by hospitality businesses such as pubs and cafes with little external support although the co-op does provide some support to the scheme. In Hadleigh the George have offered this for a while and are having a re-launch on the 12th Nov 09.30am â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 11:00am, Waterfield House and Sydney Brown court also have these Guest Speaker John Hunt â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Friends of St Marys (The Hadleigh Church Trust). The Trust exist principally to support the church and the Deanery tower, finding funds to support repairs and maintain the buildings. It appears that the diocese has now taken back responsibility for maintaining the Tower, so the funds will support work on the church building. Previously money raised by the trust has been spent on things such as the restoration of stonework on the front of the church. The trust organises events to have appeal for those outside of the town to bring in a broader group of visitors and to avoid focusing all the requirement for fund raising on local people. Funds are raised by an annual subscription for members of ÂŁ10, then additional income from the annual open garden event and organised talks together with bequests.

The 2019 garden event will be on the 8th June between 11am and 5pm, people open their gardens to the public and tickets and maps are sold to generate income. There are also opportunities to sponsor the event and previously additional funds have been raised by catering however currently there is no-one to provide the catering for the June event. The date for the lecture is the 28th September and the subject will be Hadleigh and the Reformation. The annual meeting is not a fund raiser but an opportunity to get together, this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event is on the 8th December and Margaret Woods will be introducing her new book on Medieval Hadleigh.

Physiotherapy service with sports organisations within the town. The next video will focus on places to east and the group would like to do more such as where to stay and community. The website has been given enough funding to continue for another year; McCarthy & Stone and HTC have both provided funding support, the leisure centre offered to take part.

Christmas Present Trust: The Christmas day meal is taking place again this year, each year the numbers have increased, originally attended by 30 people, this year, more than 100 are expected making it the biggest yet. The event is funded by HTC, the thrift shop and other businesses and individuals. Some provide support in the way of gifts, including the Co-op and Morrisons. All the veg and preparation are done Christmas eve at the Ansell centre, then on Christmas day guests arrive from 12, the meal starts at 1pm followed by entertainment then people start to leave around 4pm.

The event isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just for single people but or anyone who would benefit from being part of the event.

Tidy Town: Usual picks going very well and the group are continuing to separate recycling and rubbish for disposal.

Town Council: HTC have made grants to the friends of Hadleigh library and the Visit Hadleigh website and is purchasing items for the Hadleigh in bloom scheme together with yew trees for the war memorial. They are in discussion with the WW1 Memorial group regarding two new benches for the site. 2 full size Tommy's and some seated have been ordered, and will hopefully be in place for Remembrance Sunday. 58 Christmas trees have been ordered, these will be put up by volunteers with all work being covered by Hadleigh Town Council insurances. The main Christmas tree will be put up on the 1st Dec in the market place. HTC are looking into adopting the phone box in Anne Beaumont Way in order to house a community defibrillator and are considering doing the same in Benton Street Babergh: An Avenue of Remembrance has been planted in Beaumont park and SCC Councillor. Michael Fraser has committed funding to provide a bench Hadleigh now has a Babergh customer access point in the library which will be staffed every Thursday afternoon between 1.30 - 5pm. There is also an iPad permanently there to enable people to copy and send documents etc, a further one will be installed at a wheelchair accessible height.

Legacy group: Weeding and planting in public beds in the town is ongoing, the Rotary club have now planted 1000 crocuses and are looking to plant more (5000) next year. The Heritage weekend was very successful John Hunt dressed as Master Builder and gave a talk about the Deanery tower to visitors which was well received. The Visit Hadleigh team have submitted a proposal to the Diocese to refurbish the Deanery tower to use as a visitor information point. Thanks to the anonymous gardener who has planted the flower bed around the marketplace tree.

PPG: The group have been very active undertaking the annual patient survey.

There was a good response to this and it provided positive feedback for the practice, with written responses providing in depth feedback. Responses have indicated that there is a desire to link leisure and health services in order to lead a healthy life, and a new service â&#x20AC;&#x153;Inactive to Active â&#x20AC;&#x153; being launched in the last week. This service funded by the leisure centre will be based at the surgery and will help people identify and access leisure activities that will help them to improve their health and fitness. Parking has been highlighted as an issue with people using the car park behind the surgery for parking when they visit the town rather than for the surgery. The Citizens Advice Bureau are also considering setting up a regular clinic with in the surgery.

AOB: The group thanked Roly and Mary Pipe for the wildflower planting outside their home on the bypass, it provides a beautiful approach to the town.

Roly has prepared a guide on how they did it as it required obtaining permission from Highways, as it is Highway land, then killing of existing growth and re seeding with a special seed mix.

Stuart Service attended the Stars of Babergh and Mid Suffolk Awards at St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s church on the 18th October. Hadleigh Bowling Club Guests of honour at our Annual Dinner and awards ceremony were Roy and Chris Gwinnell, who have been generous supporters of the club over the years.

The club has welcomed a lot of new members this year, and Paul Ashton is pictured coming up to receive his winner’s award for the Novices Cup. We’re in the indoor season till next Spring, and 30 of the 120 playing members are signed up for short mat bowls which is like outdoor bowls except there’s no grass, it’s indoors, and played on short mats that are rolled out the length of the room. So nothing like outdoor bowls really. But it’s fun and very sociable. Social events come thick and fast. We had the pie and quiz night - did you know where you find magnesium sulfate in the home (Epsom Salts), well I didn’t, how much Children in Need has raised since it began (£1 billion), no, me neither, or which iconic London building has a rooftop sky garden (the Walkie-Talkie). No, missed that one too. I’m still mystified how our team didn’t win.

But we’re very pleased to continue our collaboration with the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance who bring a group every Wednesday to play indoor bowls with our members. Bury comes to Bildeston – Six chefs cook to raise £10,000 for local Hospice Five chefs from Bury St Edmunds joined Chris Lee in his kitchen at The Bildeston Crown recently to cook a five-course dinner with canapes and petits fours, and raise an incredible £10,000 (ten thousand pounds) for St Nicholas Hospice Care. The six chefs were: Chris Lee - The Bildeston Crown; Greig Young - The Northgate; James Carn - currently working at All Saints, Fornham as well as various pop-ups across Suffolk; Justin Sharp - Pea Porridge, Pascal Canevet - Maison Bleue; Zack Deakins - 1921 Angel Hill Over fifty diners paid £90.00 per head for the dinner and matched wines selected and described by Ed Keith at Hallgarten Wines. As they ate, diners generously purchased raffle tickets to win prizes donated by each chef. A surprise addition to the evening was a number of other treats offered by those who had heard about the event which led to chef Chris Lee turning auctioneer to whip up bids on seven prize lots. There were stay packages from Tuddenham Mill and Fawsley Hall; a golf match with four of the chefs at Hintlesham Hall; a clay pigeon shoot at The Lindsey Rose; a dinner party at home cooked by Chris Lee; two tickets for high speed ride in a Porsche at a Grand Prix race circuit and an unbelievable opportunity to fly in a spitfire from Duxford donated by TMJ interiors. Still in his chef’s whites and clearly running on adrenaline, Chris worked on his audience and the bids came pouring in.

It was Chris’s idea to hold this event, primarily to highlight in one great dinner the best chefs, restaurants and food producers of West Suffolk but also as he explains: “I count all these chefs as good friends and thought it would be a great opportunity to get together; we don’t do it enough. The fact that in having fun cooking together we can also raise some much-needed funds for the local hospice – well that is even better.”

Shona Doig, community administrator for the Hospice, who attended the event, explained “The Hospice needs to raise up to £11,000 a day from community fundraising events such as this, to continue supporting people living with long-term and life-limiting illnesses in West Suffolk and Thetford area.” Emma Clements, major events fund-raiser for the Hospice, who visited Bildeston to formally receive the cheque, also stressed the need for community support: “A big thank you to all six chefs and their teams for giving up their Monday night off to raise such a phenomenal amount. We are so proud that West Suffolk has such talented chefs and are immensely grateful for their continued support.”

East Anglian Garden Group Our last lecture of 2018 was given by Rasvan Chizu, and his subject Transylvian Alpine Plants was enjoyed by all. He grew up in the mountains amidst stunning scenery, beautiful wooden churches, and famous castles, and his knowledge of the flora of the region was unbounded. He will be taking groups of people from the Alpine Garden Society on a visit next June. Check their website for details, he will be a most enthusiastic guide! We were treated to a photographic tour of this amazing country, with its wealth of wild flowers, which carpet the mountains from spring onwards. How lucky they are not to have suffered the ravages of intensive farming, which has denuded our verges and field margins of so many of our wild flowers.

Tickets for our Celebrity Speaker, James Alexander-Sinclair,( garden and landscape designer, writer, television presenter and RHS Council member) on February 16th, are now on sale, £10 for members, £15 for non members, and £2.50 from each ticket will be donated to the Greenfingers Charity, who build gardens for childrens hospices. Fidelis Activity News Hintlesham Barns: Members had a most enjoyable morning at Hintlesham Barns just recently. A pre-Christmas shop with refreshments was the reason for this highly successful outing. Our thanks to owner, Julie Girling, for her warm welcome and delightful gift wrapping skills.

Mayerling: The Royal Ballet Company’s interpretation of the epic ballet Mayerling was full of sex, drugs and revolution. In spite of this or maybe because of it, it was a joy to watch the tragedy unfold as Crown Prince Rudolph dances his way to an emotional finale with his teenage mistress; just one of the many influential women in his troubled life. Another successful beamed in performance from ROH, Covent Garden to Cineworld, Ipswich.

Food Bank: Following a one off appeal for donations to the local food bank, Sue Monk was overwhelmed when she came to collect the results. Members had responded generously with masses of items on the Food Bank’s ‘wanted’ list. Sincere thanks to all who contributed and to Sue for her courier duties.

Trial by Laughter: As expected, the latest play from Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, is full of satire, wit and ridicule. Performed to a full house at the New Wolsey this is part of an extensive UK tour. Although it is set in 1800’s its thought provoking sentiments are just as relevant today. A polished performance by Trademark Touring and Watermill Theatre with many of the cast portraying several different characters.

Carriers Arms: Lunch Bunchers returned to a favourite haunt at East Bergholt for more of their tasty, traditional pub food and some lively discussions.

La Bayadère: A glittering performance of this exotic Eastern ballet was beamed in live from ROH Covent Garden to Cineworld, Ipswich and much enjoyed by Fidelis ballet lovers.

Barrie Appleby: Everyone knows The Beano comic with Gnasher, Dennis the Menace and the Bash Street Kids but few are familiar with their creator, Barrie Appleby. Barrie came to speak about his love of this unique profession. He gave us an insight into the time and effort which goes into creating these famous characters together with the weekly cartoons which he draws in Cartoonist Barrie Appleby conjunction with Charlie Haylock for the East Anglian Daily Times. With Barrie’s help and several circles later the ladies had each created their own cartoon ape to be judged by the expert himself. As winners, Jan Richards, Jo Newman and Grace Maplin each receive a signed copy of Barrie’s work. JD

Down to Earth ...with Dave As I write this the wonderful weather is continuing, the early morning mist and dampness has been dried off by some lovely sunshine. It is a pleasure to be out and about and getting on with a final tidy up. The autumn fruiting raspberries have been cut right back to ground level, as have the yellow asparagus fronds, a good covering of well rotted compost will be applied as soon as possible. As we have had a fair bit of rain lately it is best not to tread on the ground more than is really needed. Not a problem on the allotment as one of the projects this year was to salvage lots of old concrete slabs and lay several paths going right across the allotment. Hard work but well worth the effort as it is now possible to work from these paths and not tread on the soil.

It seems to be a tradition with allotment holders that virtually anything can be reused, we even have somebody who regularly leaves out bags of sweepings from their aviary floor for use as compost. Whilst it is a bit strong and does smell a bit, it is fine when mixed with other materials on the compost. A rather novel first is that someone has put up a notice on the allotment that they have quantities if alpaca poo for disposal. It will be interesting to see a sample of this, I imagine it will be a bit like sheep droppings, as I said not much goes to waste.

It is a good idea to reduce the height of any buddleia bushes now in order to stop any possible wind damage, the final heavy pruning should be left till the spring. If you have an outside tap it will pay to lag it against frost. You can buy a proper kit or make up your own using pipe lagging or even layers of bubble wrap. Also put any lances away in the shed as they will be ruined by freezing temperatures.

The robin with its bright red breast is very evident in our gardens at this time of year. The adult male does not move far from its local breeding ground but the females may well cross the channel to spend the winter in warmer climes, as far as spain and Portugal.

Both males and females sing all year round to defend their territory and their songs are identical. Around Christmas time robins begin to explore other robins' territories in the hope of finding a mate. Most will have paired up by mid January and the females will stop their territorial singing. The males will continue to sing to declare ownership of their joint breeding ground and they may well fight to the death to defend this territory, as much as 10% of adult mortality is caused by this. Sometimes robins will sing long into the night, especially where there are street lights, they often start at dawn and are one of last to stop in the evening.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday November 12th 2018: If you are starting a garden from scratch or want to redesign your existing plot then Green Island Gardens, Ardleigh is the place to go. Fiona Edmond, who owns the garden also runs courses on garden design and she came to speak to the club last month. Although her talk was only an hour in length there were plenty of ideas about 'right' and 'wrong' design and lots of illustrations to show theory in practice.

The most important thing is to have a plan from the start and 'less is more' seems to be the way to success. Limit your choice of plants, use a maximum of three different types of hard landscaping materials and divide the garden, however small, into different areas, seating, planting etc. If your garden is very small then doing without a lawn altogether seems to be the best bet as it will make the garden look bigger and reduce the need for maintenance. If only I had known all this nine years ago when I took on my present garden! Now, where did I put that spade............?

Mayors Monthly This has been a month of reflection and remembrance. I attended the “Avenue of Oaks” planting ceremony on Beaumont Meadow at the invitation of Babergh Disrict Council, they have planted an avenue of eighteen trees either side of the footpath that crosses the land. The trees will form an impressive memorial as they mature, I would urge you to take the time to visit the site.

You cannot have missed the poppy decorations all around the town, a wonderful tribute and something that was re-inforced with the children of Hadleigh schools coming to the cemetery and being given an insight into the lives of local soldiers buried there by Mark Brennan.

The Festival of Remembrance held at the United Reformed Church was a wonderful evening and told us of the lives of many who left this town to serve in the armed forces during WW1. There were songs and poems of the era, and enactments of scenes of life in the trenches, with reading of actual letters from the time. The Wattisham Wives choir sang beautifully as did the Hadleigh Community Choir.

Sunday the 11th brought what appeared to be all of Hadleigh residents on the streets to witness and to join the parade. What a splendid turnout, the church was packed for the Service of Remembrance where young and old remembered the fallen not just of the Great War but of all wars.

I should like to thank the Royal British Legion for all their work, and every other organisation that was involved in the setting up of all the events during this time, but would like to give my personal gratitude to Mr Mark Brennan for his tireless commitment to ensuring that WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. Councillor Byrne reported on the revised drawings that had been submitted for application DC/18/02834 which had been submitted to Babergh District Council but not received by Hadleigh Town Council. These had led to the Officer approving this application. A resident had visited Endeavour House to discuss this application and told there was no-one there to talk to and told to visit Stowmarket, then told to go to Sudbury. It was agreed that a letter be sent to Babergh District Council complaining about the lack of consultation and this be copied to the District Councillors.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The Chair updated the Committee on work that has been carried out so far. The housing figures should have gone through to Babergh in September and were now being worked upon and Hadleigh Town Council is on the list to receive this information.

The Memorandum of Understanding and the Terms of Reference for the Working Group are being worked on.

Councillor Haines has accessed the Working Groups e.mails and will be making contact with members of the public who have shown an interest in being involved. Then there will be a need to identify the skill sets of those working on the plan so that appropriate tasks are given to those who can complete them.

ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS Councillor Cook had attended the Babergh District Council Parish Liaison Meeting and although an agenda was produced this was changed and it would have been beneficial for the Chair of Planning to have attended as Tom Barker gave a presentation on the new NPPF being interpreted by Inspectors. She reported that, in an effort to ensure that planning permissions become actual builds, BDC will be required to sign a memorandum of agreement with each developer. The meeting was also told that building outside the settlement boundary is not now necessarily sacrosanct.

Councillor Sheldrick was concerned over the Discharge of Conditions received relevant to the McCarthy Stone Development. The Clerk was asked to request more information especially on the drainage details and had this changed.

There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.10pm.

Above the Parapet Suffolk County Councillor - Mick Fraser Remembrance I am delighted to report that I have allocated funds from my Locality budget for the purchase of a WW1 Bench Seat manufactured by David Ogilvie Engineering which, will be located alongside the 16 oak trees planted up at Beaumont Park. This smart steel bench will give a wonderful enhance to the area and allow people to sit and reflect whilst looking at the view over the Brett valley toward Kersey and beyond. These sixteen oak trees were procured and planted by Babergh DC Public Realm department, with the final one being planted by Hadleigh’s Mayor, Cllr Peter Matthews and Cllr Margaret Maybury of BDC. I believe this was a fine example of how the tiers of local government can work together to better enhance our environment and living spaces.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mark Brennan for organizing and leading the Remembrance ceremonies this year as he has done so throughout these centenary anniversaries of the World War 1 years.

The displays and tributes on St Mary’s Church, on various buildings and elsewhere are a wonderful tribute in memory of the Hadleigh fallen. The parade on Remembrance Sunday was the largest attended that I can remember and I anticipate that this year’s Poppy Appeal might be the biggest total to date. Well done Mark and everyone who gave up their time to assist with his efforts.

Benton Street. There were a few concerns raised over the recent roadworks in Benton St which closed it for several days. These were emergency BT works brought about by some elderly residents who had lost their connection, on which they are reliant. The scale of the task was initially underestimated, but resulted in a 52m cable having to be laid along the roadway. I had contacted Highways enquiring of this matter and requested that they emphasised to BT the urgency in opening the road again soonest, because of the inconvenience caused to other road users.

Hadleigh Healing Society We have celebrated the anniversary of the ending of WW1 and for many it has stirred up so many memories of family members that never returned or were so badly traumatised or injured they were never the same person again. So many villages, towns, cities and countries lost so many people to give us what we have today in this country is PEACE. Peace is so important to us all and more so at Christmas when we should be enjoying the bringing together of families perhaps isolated by distance for the greater part of the year. Enjoying the joy and excitement expressed by children as they open their presents. It is a time when all disagreements and quarrels should be forgiven and forgotten. We all should think of those in our neighbourhood who are alone and Christmas is just another day in the week because they have no-one to celebrate it with. Invite them in to share perhaps a cup of tea and mince pie because it will show them someone does care.

Hadleigh Library Customer Services pop-up Babergh Councillors, Kathryn Grandon, Ward Member for Hadleigh South and Derek Davis, Cabinet Member for Organisational Delivery try out the newly installed iPad at the Hadleigh Library Customer Services pop-up, which enables Babergh District Council customers to access online council services during the library’s opening hours. Residents can also seek face to face assistance from council staff during the drop-ins at the library on Thursday afternoons between 1:30-5pm.

Cllr Kathryn Grandon, Ward Member for Hadleigh South said: “As one of Hadleigh’s District Councillors I’ve been calling for a Hadleigh access point for residents and I’m pleased that this project will fulfil that ambition. This initiative means those living in and around Hadleigh can have local and easy access to Babergh’s customer services, both on and offline even if they don’t own a computer.” Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for Organisational Delivery, said: “Improving customer service access remains a top priority for us and it’s great we’ve been able to continue the service which has worked so well in Shotley with a second pop-up Customer Access Point in Hadleigh. We understand that not everyone is fully comfortable using our services online and this work allows our residents to talk to a human face to face. This project has enabled us to build on an excellent working relationship with Suffolk Libraries and will enable us to have a clearer picture of what our residents need.”

Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan The Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan is being re-launched. We are two Hadleigh Town Councillors, Val Haines (Chair of the Planning Committee) and Carol Schleip, who, in conjunction with a neighbourhood planning consultant, Chris Bowden from Navigus Planning, have been given the task by the Town Council of taking the development of the Plan forward to its completion. Carol and I will be the link with Hadleigh Town Council and Babergh District Council and it is important that this link is maintained as it is Hadleigh Town Council which is required to submit the plan. However, the development of the Plan can only be successful if it properly involves the community of Hadleigh. It is for this reason that we are now appealing to you for your help. Our first aim is to form a Steering Group that will lead the development of the Plan policies. These policies will be determined by the Steering Group but must be shaped by the views of the community and reflect the emerging Babergh Local Plan.

All you have to do to qualify for involvement on the Steering Group is be a resident of Hadleigh or have a business or workplace in the town. If you like being part of a team or would like to lead a community group we are also needing people with skills such as project management, IT, Facebook and website management, collating information, town planning, and so on.

HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 18th October 2018 Present: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haylock, Knock, Loftus, Monks, Sheldrick, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. In attendance: 6 members of the public.

In the absence of the Mayor, Councillor Monks, Deputy Town Mayor, chaired the meeting. Councillor Monks pointed out at the start of the meeting that Councillors should bear in mind that they are working as one body – Hadleigh Town Council. This was reiterated throughout the meeting.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders raised a point of order that the summons to the meeting was not correct as it was not signed by the Town Clerk but was a facsimile of the signature. He stated that this should be a ‘wet copy’ signature kept in the office.

Therefore the meeting was not duly convened. The Chair pointed out that the Town Clerk’s signature is a stamp held in the office for use in the Town Clerk’s absence.

His concerns would be noted and minuted.

APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors: Haines, Matthews and Fraser. These apologies were accepted.

MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 18th September 2018 and 20th September 2018 were confirmed as a correct record and signed.

MATTERS ARISING Police - The Clerk reported that she had contacted Sudbury Town Council and been provided with the information of the work carried out by their Town Warden. They would be happy to discuss working in partnership with Hadleigh Town Council.

Reports of the County & District Councillors - The Clerk advised that she had met with Mrs. Moran from Hadleigh Community Transport Group and they had been able to secure advertising in the Community News. She would provide the costings as a grant request for the Finance meeting in December.

Market Place Seat - The Clerk reported that she had been advised that the Market Place Notice Board would have to be moved to accommodate the new bench. If there were no objections could this be sited at the cemetery as Babergh District Council may be providing their own noticeboard. It was agreed to wait until confirmation had been received from Babergh District Council that they would be providing a noticeboard in the market place before making a decision on the resiting of the Town Council’s board.

Cemetery Extension - Councillor Shearly-Sanders stated that he was not aware of the second tender process. Councillor Angland pointed out that all Councillors had received this information last August. The Clerk was asked to provide him with another copy and also to the newly joined Councillors.

Matters Arising – This Council supports the rights of Councillors to access the most accurate and up to date information and support in order to fulfil the role of Councillor. To achieve this all Councillors should have the opportunity to meet with Jim Friend of SALC and the Council supports Councillor Wiltshire’s initiative and offer to facilitate this as soon as possible. - Councillor Wiltshire reported that the new Councillor training sessions were coming to an end and she would be contacting Jim Friend of SALC and Emily Yule, Babergh District Council Monitoring Officer, to re-arrange the meeting that had been put on hold.

At this point the meeting was adjourned for members of the public to ask questions on e.mails sent.

POLICE Members had been provided with the monthly newsletter produced by the Police.

REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Suffolk County Councillor Fraser and Babergh District Councillors Dr. Dawson, Campbell and Grandon had tendered their apologies but provided written reports.

It was reported that the Ansell Memories Café had been nominated for an award at the Babergh Stars Community Group of the Year category.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Clerk reported that the CIL payment for the period from the 1st April 2018 to 30th September 2018 is £2.61. The Clerk reported that Suffolk County Council had endorsed the expression of interest submitted to the Wool Towns LEADER Rural Development Programme and was in receipt of the forms to be completed for the next stage of the application.

STANDING ORDER NO. 40 Councillor Shearly-Sanders asked the following questions: 1. Mr. Crimmin. Will the Mayor convene an Extraordinary Council Meeting to discuss and agree terms of engagement to be offered to Mr Crimmin and, if thought fit to do so, additionally to offer a compensatory financial package for work Mr Crimmin may have recently undertaken, for the benefit of the Council and the people of Hadleigh, in the absence of any lawful Resolution of the Council to engage him?

The Clerk advised that an e.mail reply had been sent drawing Councillor ShearlySanders attention to the Confidential Report presented to Council on the 20th September which includes the appointment of Mr. Crimmin as the RFO in the absence of the Town Clerk. Councillor Shearly-Sanders advised the Clerk that he had not received the report so this will be resent. The timescale for this arrangement would be determined by either the Town Clerk’s return or receipt of a sick note.

(b) If not, please confirm that the lack of such a report relating to the development has been notified to the Council’s indemnity insurers and they are confirmed that its absence will not affect the validity should any claims arise which could have been avoided if such a report had been obtained ? 3. Correspondence On 24 September 2018 I wrote jointly to The Proper Officer and The Responsible Financial Officer of Hadleigh Town Council 1 Will the Proper Officer explain why neither the Proper Officer nor the Responsible Financial Officer can respond to these questions without an authorising Resolution of the Council as this would otherwise seem to present an opportunity for the Council to conceal matters, particularly of financial or embarrassing natures, contrary to the new principles of openness and transparency?

2 Will the Mayor promptly convene an Extraordinary Council Meeting to pass a resolution requesting the Proper Officer and Responsible Financial Officer to reply to the said letter and report fully to the Council on the matters raised in the letter 4. Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity At the meeting of the Council held on 14 February 2018 I asked questions under Standing Order 40 regarding the Hadleigh Guildhall Complex. In reply (Minute 164) I was advised "these questions would need to be asked of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity" I have subsequently ascertained that this reply was wrong. It is conceptually impossible to ask a question of an incorporeal entity (it has no legal identity). The Trustee of the Charity is Hadleigh Town Council, which is a legal entity and responsible for performing the trust obligation and the correct legal entity to answer the questions.

1 - Payments to Hadleigh 1 Has the Council made payments for general benefit of the inhabitants of Hadleigh since 31 May 2011 under its obligation (in Paragraph 20 of the Trust Document)?

2 If no payments have been made, why not?

2 - Plan for Leasing 1 What plan does the Council have for leasing the Guildhall complex?

2 If none, is the Council seeking professional advice on a letting strategy to help comply with its leasing obligation (in Paragraph 20 of the Trust Document)?

3 If the Council is not seeking professional advice, why is it not doing so?

5. Hadleigh Grand Feoffment Charity Was there a copy on a Council file or in the office of the Charity’s Scheme made by order of the Charity Commission on or before the Annual Meeting of the Council on 17th May last?

Who instructed Elaine Root to prepare the letter of 29th March to the Charity Who instructed Elaine Root to send the letter after it was signed by a Councillor Why was the letter not signed by the Clerk or other authorised Officer of the council Please provide particular of the Resolution of the Council approving the signing and

sending of the letter of 29th March 6. Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity On 6 November 2017 I circulated a note to all Councillors. This note represents my personal opinions but I remind the Mayor that I qualified as a Solicitor in 1972 and practiced for over 40 years.

Having regard to the time that has elapsed and the deteriorating financial position of "the Charity" would the Mayor please confirm that he will call an early Extraordinary Meeting of the Council to give urgent consideration to the Council obtaining legal advice on its position, obligations and financial risks that may arise from its role, and conduct as Trustee of the Guildhall complex.

As Councillor Shearly-Sanders questions had been received by e.mail all Councillors had been made aware of the questions submitted prior to the meeting.

The Chair advised that as the Mayor was not in attendance and as the questions had only been received that morning it was not possible to answer all the questions but they would be minuted and replied to at a later date. Councillor Schleip accused the Chair of being unprofessional in not providing an answer. Councillor Monks stated that she had only been advised at 1.30pm in the afternoon that she would be chairing the meeting and this was while she was at work and so had no time available to attend to such detailed questions.

Councillor Wiltshire stated that Councillor Shearly-Sanders was accused of a breach of the Code of Conduct. A Grievance Panel made up of three of his Councillor colleagues found him guilty. They imposed sanctions on him. He was barred from all committees, and from representing the Council externally. However, the Council had no authority to hear a Code of Conduct case. The proper authority was and is the Monitoring Officer. This has always been the guidance for Councillors from Suffolk Association of Local Councils. The Ledbury Judicial Review reaffirms this point of law. There is, by the way, no legal challenge to the Ledbury ruling. The Grievance Panel acted beyond its power. In the last few days, the Monitoring Officer completed her own investigation of the complaint against Councillor Shearly-Sanders. She found him not guilty of any breach of the Code of Conduct. She also strongly implied that the Grievance Panel acted on the basis of advice which was inaccurate. During this time Councillor Shearly-Sanders has suffered humiliation, enormous stress and upset. His human right to scrutinise and question was infringed. He was prevented from carrying out his duties to his constituents. It is clear that an injustice has been done to Councillor ShearlySanders and to the people of Hadleigh whom he represents? Does he agree that Councillor Shearly-Sanders deserves an apology and will he now formally cancel the penalties this Council placed on him?

Councillor Byrne pointed out that the Grievance Panel did not deal with a breach of the Code of Conduct but with a Grievance made by a member of staff and had acted within the panel’s authority. Advice had been received from the Monitoring Officer. Councillor Sheldrick stated that as part of the Grievance Panel he could confirm advice had been received from the Monitoring Officer and acted on that advice. The Councillors were not to blame as the actions were based on the advice given and he felt that this was flawed.

Councillor Knock advised that a member of the public asked for the address of the Internal Auditor and has been advised that he cannot have this. This is a criminal offence. Can that information be put in the public domain?

Councillor Knock asked that Councillor Schleip’s request to join the Finance & Personnel Committee be taken to full Council. It was agreed that this would be an item on the next Agenda.

Councillor Knock asked if he could have a set of accounts showing that the cemetery income can provide the re-payments?

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £30,084.45 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. Councillor Shearly-Sanders proposed an amendment to the schedule that the payment to Mr. D. Crimmin, Acting RFO, be removed. This was seconded by Councillor Knock.

Voting was: Against: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haylock, Loftus, Monks and Sheldrick. For: Councillors: Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. The amendment was not carried.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders proposed an amendment to the schedule that the payment to Gipping Occupational Health, in relation to staff absence, be removed until such time as a report has been received. This was seconded by Councillor Knock. Voting was: Against: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haylock, Loftus and Monks, For: Councillors: Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders, Sheldrick and Wiltshire. The amendment was not carried.

Councillor Knock proposed an amendment to the schedule that the payment to Gill Associates, in relation to work to date on the cemetery extension, be removed. This was seconded by Councillor Wiltshire. Voting was: Against: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Haylock, Loftus and Monks, For: Councillors: Free, Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders, Sheldrick and Wiltshire. As the vote was tied the Chair cast her second vote – Against the amendment. The amendment was not carried.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders questioned the payment to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. Councillor Byrne advised that it is essential that this payment must continue until the lease has been provided by the Charity. This is being worked on but is being held up by the Charity Commission. Councillor Shearly-Sanders proposed an amendment to the schedule that the payment to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity be removed. This was seconded by Councillor Knock. Voting was: Against: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haylock, Loftus, Monks and Sheldrick, For: Councillors: Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. The amendment was not carried.

Councillor Knock requested a statement of payments made to Bullards concerning the cemetery extension to date.

Councillor Cook proposed acceptance of the payment schedule. This was seconded by Councillor Sheldrick. Voting was: For: Councillors: Angland, Byrne,

Cook, Free, Haylock, Loftus, Monks and Sheldrick, Against: Councillors: Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. The schedule was approved for payment.

PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 16th October 2018 were noted.

FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 4th October 2018 including the recommendations to make the following grants: i) £1,000 to Mrs. Woods, ii) £1,000 to Friends of Hadleigh Library, iii) £500 to Sudbury & District Citizens Advice Bureau, iv) £500 to Visit Hadleigh Suffolk Website. And to purchase three balcony planters, four hanging baskets and two wall brackets at a cost of £728.25 for the Hadleigh in Bloom Scheme and eight Irish Yew Trees for the War Memorial was received and accepted.

Councillor Wiltshire requested that due diligence be taken on the Christmas Tree provider.

ENVIRONMENT & GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 4th October 2018 was received and accepted.

TO RESCIND MINUTE NO: 89 – CEMETERY EXTENSION – TO AWARD THE CONTRACT DATED 23RD AUGUST A discussion took place over the wording of the agenda item and the reasons why this action was necessary. As further information had been received and provided to Councillors on the proposal of Councillor Monks and seconded by Councillor Cook it was agreed to rescind this minute in order that a decision could be taken in confidential session at the end of this meeting. Voting was: For: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haylock, Loftus, Monks and Sheldrick, Against: Councillors: Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire.

BUDGET 2019/2020 Councillors were provided with the timetable of events for preparation of the budget.

REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Haylock reported that the Wool Town Association have been preparing a bid for the Leader fund and have been advised that no decision will be made until December.

The Clerk reported that she had met with members of the walking group of the Wool Town Association. They are working on a fifty mile round walk to connect all the member towns. It was a productive meeting as most of the towns already produced their own walking booklets and these were available on line. It was agreed to link the information to the Wool Towns Webpage.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders reported that the Chamber of Commerce had not been holding any breakfast meetings this year. He would be attending a BAPTC meeting.

He is a representative on both these organisations and will continue to attend.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders did not agree with his removal from the Hadleigh Grand Feoffment Charity at the Annual Town Meeting. He stated he intended to attend the next meeting.

STANDING ORDERS Councillor Shearly-Sanders had been asked at the last meeting to provide recommended changes to the NALC standing orders produced

by Councillor Cook. He felt that the document required more work. It was agreed that another month could be taken for three Councillors to work on the document.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders, Sheldrick and Schleip agreed to take on this task and provide the information in advance of the November Town Council meeting. This would be an agenda item.

MOTION FROM COUNCILLOR LOFTUS Hadleigh Town Council resolves that at future meetings all County and District Councillor reports, having been received in writing prior to the meeting, should merely be noted and those Councillors available to answer any questions raised. This was agreed unanimously.

THERE BUT NOT THERE The Clerk advised that Mr. Brennan had been successful in bidding for free ten seated Tommies which he would distribute around the town.

It was felt that Mr. Brennan along with members of the Royal British Legion had made the town look wonderful and sent them all a thank you for the work carried out.

It was agreed that Hadleigh Town Council would purchase two full sized Tommies.

One would be placed in the Cemetery and the siting of the other would be agreed later. Suggestions made were in St. Mary’s Churchyard or at the War Memorial.

2018 ARMISTICE COMMEMORATION – AN AVENUE OF OAK TREES Councillors had been provided with a copy of the letter received from Babergh District Councillor Margaret Maybury, Cabinet Member for Communities, Armed Forces Champion advising of the planting of an Avenue of Oaks on Beaumont Park.

The Clerk drew Councillors attention to the Suffolk County Councillors report which included details of an event being held in the town when the trees are planted. No information had been provided to the Town Council of this event nor had the Mayor received an invitation to attend.

TOWN MATTERS The Clerk reported an e.mail received from Councillor Grandon advising that she had attended the opening of the Babergh District Council access point in the Library. It was disappointing that this was the only notification received.

Nothing official had been provided to the Council.

There being no further business the meeting ended at 10.15pm.

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the 31 October 2018 meeting were: • District Council report Bin collections were still a problem, which it seemed was mostly due to a shortage of lorry drivers.

• County Council report With regard to the Design Guide for building and development in Suffolk, the Chairman said he had tried to complete the online questionnaire, but it was quite complicated. There was no opportunity within the questionnaire to raise the issue of the deteriorating environment, eg signposts falling down etc - he would write to SCC as an individual; Councillor Jones said he would also raise this. In response to a question concerning specialist education, Councillor Jones said SCC was looking at the provision of placements and agreed there were currently not enough. Councillor Laing congratulated SCC on its new service to support those affected by suicide.

• War Memorial / Remembrance Day It was agreed that very little cleaning was required this year following last year’s refurbishment. Councillors Woods and Gunn would carry out any necessary work.

• Review of Parish Plan It was intended that the review would identify new actions and priorities for Layham that would form a mandate for the next Parish Council. It was agreed that a working group would meet as soon as possible to agree methods of raising awareness amongst parishioners, including a leaflet drop.

• Babergh Town & Parish Liaison meeting The Chairman and Clerk had attended this meeting on 11 October; the clerk’s report was noted. Councillors raised concerns over the “relaxing” of the planning inspectors’ interpretation of the guidelines in the new National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

Concern was expressed about the lack of effective communication both within, and with, the district council now that it had relocated to Endeavour House.

• Water accumulating near Hadleigh Rugby Club This was an ongoing problem which, whilst technically in Hadleigh, also affected Layham residents.

It was agreed unanimously that the Clerk should write to Hadleigh Town Council to ask if they would be willing to work with the parish council to try and get drains and ditches dug out.

Remembrance Weekend 100th Anniversary of the end of the Great War - St Andrew's PCC would like to thank everyone for helping to make the Remembrance weekend successful. Over 3,500 poppies were knitted and made by people from Layham, Hadleigh, Ipswich and even Scotland. These were assembled into several ‘waterfalls’ and other decorations. Thank you to everyone who supported this event by loaning items for the exhibition as well as those who stewarded and provided refreshments. Around 200 people visited the church over the weekend and the building was packed for the Remembrance service.

The total money raised over the weekend, including the Remembrance service, was £600, which will be going to the Royal British Legion.

Layham children remember the village fallen Ten Layham schoolchildren gathered in Layham Burial Ground at 11am on Thursday 8 November as part of the Suffolk Great War Project to mark the end of the First World War. They remembered the nineteen men whose names are recorded on the war memorial and particularly the one man (Guy Buckenham) who is buried in Layham. A special marker (shown in the picture) was placed on his grave by one of the children and the group observed a minute’s silence.

Grave marker The majority of the 10,000 people from Suffolk who died during the war were buried near where they died.

However,1332 were returned home, to be buried in their own communities and all their graves were marked in short ceremonies in 248 graveyards all over Suffolk at the same time on 8 November.

Thank you Andy Groves For a number of years now Andy has been the man behind the trumpet who has sounded the ‘Last Post’ and the ‘Reveille’ during the Remembrance Service at St Andrew’s Church. For some time he has said he would ‘retire’ after the 100th Anniversary of the end of the Great War. That time has come and we thank him for years of loyal service to the village.

A new parish plan It is time to ‘take stock’ in Layham and work together to tease out some new objectives for the Parish Council to consider in 2019. In 2004 and again in 2012 you, the people of Layham, identified a number of issues which were seen to be important to you. Since then the Parish Council, supported by community volunteers, has striven to respond to these observations and during this time we have seen many successes. If you have lived in Layham for any time you may well recognise some of the examples listed below: • Young people wanted a large, hard surface on the Playing Field. Not only has this been provided but also a basketball hoop and a ball wall. They also wanted a meeting place so we now have the ‘willow dome’ with seating.

• There was a desire for a wildlife group. Working together, the Playing Field Management Committee and Parish Council Green Team have developed a conservation area - they have planted trees, shrubs and hedges to create a space for wildlife. Green Team clean-ups regularly see 30-40 volunteers involved in environmental work across the village.

• Lots of ideas were put forward to improve the Village Hall seen as an important asset for the village. The VH Management Committee has worked hard over the past decade transforming the inside of the building.

• You asked to have more information on the walks in the Parish. A map was produced and one given to every home and a series of guided walks were organised.

• More social events were wanted. A ‘leisure and learning’ initiative resulted in several years of well attended talks in the Village Hall. Community lunches, a Social Club, church coffee mornings and a Layham Local History Group are all activities that have developed over recent years.

• Our Recycling Centre is an initiative that grew from your wishes. It has developed into a well-used facility providing a regular income for the village.

• Information was identified as being crucial. So three notice boards were provided / repaired; Letter from Layham in the Community News was established – as well as a volunteer-based distribution system in Lower Layham; an information pack for newly arriving families was produced which has been superseded by a website; the Layham community e-mail has been introduced.

• A major concern has always been speeding vehicles. After much work there have been changes to speed limits approaching Layham on the B1070. It is very likely though that traffic issues will continue to be of concern.

• We are keen to build on the successes listed above and on the important initiatives that have arisen since those days – such as the establishment of an Emergency Plan and the provision of defibrillators.

So – what next? You will receive a note to your door inviting your participation in putting forward new ideas – please give a few minutes to make your views known. What you say will be used to conduct a more detailed consultation.

Layham Playgroup CIO We have had lots of fun taking closer looks at some of favourite stories. We have looked at; the weather, our environments, colours, shapes and sounds, animals, our families and our homes. Some of our favourite books have been; The Bear Hunt, Winnie the witch, Dear zoo, Stick Man and The Gruffalo.

We would like to say a big Thank You to our friends at St Andrews Church, who invited the children to have a look at their wonderful Remembrance display. The children discussed how the poppies reminded them of soldiers, and the jobs the soldiers do to help and keep us save.

We look forward to sharing with our friends from St Andrews again at our Carol Service.

Hadleigh Orchestra Our Christmas concert will be on Sunday, December 9th. at 6.30 p.m. In St. Joseph’s Catholic Church - where we can be warm and comfortable. Our programme is now finalised and we shall have popular carols to sing - as usual. We have decided to postpone our performance of Peter and the Wolf apart from the difficulty of getting it together in time, it is too long for the Christmas concert. So instead we have some very lively baroque music: Danserye by Susato, and two pieces from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. The change will also enable us to perform more selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, a piece from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and four orchestra transcriptions of Brahms’ Waltzes.

Entrance, as usual, will be free, but we shall ask you to make an offering as you leave to help to cover costs and to make a donation to Talitha Koum. This Ipswich based charity aims to help women in need and we shall say more about it at the end of the concert. The orchestra is seeking to recruit some more players, especially violin and viola, some wind, and especially a percussion player. Dear Sir, To all it may concern in regards to complaints made about the trimming of trees bordering my property, these are the facts: 1. I had permission by the Council prior to cutting back.

2. This permission was granted by the Tree Warden at the Council.

3. The work was carried out and cleared within 3 days.

4. After complaints were made, the Tree Warden paid a visit and complimented the clearing up.

Please ascertain all the facts in future before complaining or speak to me in a respectful manner so that the facts are straight without wasting tax payer’s money and councillors time. To all the disappointed people who failed to stop me from gaining planning permission to build a bungalow on my own property, we got there in the end, better luck next time...and watch this space!

Dear Sir, It was with disbelief and shock that I learned Kathryn Grandon was failed to be endorsed by the Executive Committee of the SSCA (South Suffolk Conservative Association) to stand again in the May elections for the District Council - i.e. in effect deselected. Kathryn has no clue as to why this occurred and this is a disgraceful decision. Of course, one cannot be all things to all people but she is overwhelmingly respected.

Kathryn had a large majority in the May election of 2015 receiving over 900 votes. Since winning the seat she has worked extremely hard in Hadleigh for the town and its problems. Much of her help for individuals has been confidential. Her regular contribution to the Community News has been a witness to her interest and involvement in local issues. She has been instrumental in arranging events of general interest such as the Red Barn Murders, recently inviting people to an evening with James Cartlidge, and last month a supremely successful evening to meet Norman Tebbit (all events open to and attended by people of all political persuasion). It is extraordinary that the Conservative party does not recognise there could not be a better candidate, especially considering the national issues that always affect people's voting even though this election is in the arena of local issues. What is worse is that in future Hadleigh is still being divided into two wards, South and North, but South will be much larger. There are two seats in South and one in North but, at present, only one candidate has been endorsed for South.

My hope is that Kathryn would consider standing as an Independent if this decision stands, though I know she is a true Conservative and this would be a difficult decision for her to make. I actually think the local Conservative party has shot itself in the foot.

I pay for Garden waste collection but Babergh do not have any small brown bins so I have a black one with large labels. However I am frequently missed. I wondered if anyone has a Babergh small brown bin you don’t need. I have offered to buy my own but Babergh don’t seem able to accommodate this offer.

Dear Sir, Contrary to what you have read in the Hadleigh Community News, the bench that will be installed in the Market Place is still on schedule to arrive before Christmas. I have been assured that it will be given priority for installation, so that when it is delivered it will be in place as soon as it possibly can. The bench was ordered at the end of September 2018, all Hadleigh District Councillors were informed of this by Babergh Strategic Director, Kathy Nixon on 1st October 2018. The style of bench was chosen to enable the gardening club to have access to the area under the tree for planting, allow visitors to look inwards or out, enable a good number of people to sit comfortably without needing to squeeze too closely together - we all like personal space - and allow wheelchair access. Other bench designs would look fine around a substantial tree trunk, but the tree trunk in the Market Place will never be that thick, so a bench surrounding its slim trunk would be comical. I look forward to the bench being installed and Hadleigh residents and visitors enjoying it for years to come.

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club At the beginning of November our 5 Junior teams started their season in the Colchester league, so far we have played 3 weeks worth of games and we have had a 'mix bag' with some wins and some loses, our Teenies team 'Celestial Rockets' are doing amazing considering a lot of the girls in this team have only been playing netball since September. Our teams consist of 'Celestial Rockets' school years 5,6,7 , 'Cosmic Rockets' school years 7&8, Apollo Rockets school years 7&8, Saturn Rockets school year 8, and Galaxy Rockets school years 9&10. We have had an abundance of year 7&8 girls this season which is fantastic as this is the age most girls join their school netball teams.

On the 3rd November we entered an u14 team into the National Clubs competition, this competition is a high standard of play and sees the biggest clubs in Suffolk compete to go through to the Regional Round. Our girls played fantastically and had good wins over Christchurch and Cockfield, the girls came 4th out of 6 teams, although we didn't go through to the next round the players did amazing in their first ever Nationals Clubs, we are so proud of them.

Halloween fell on our training night but that didn't stop us having our own 'spooky' fun! We ran a competition for the best Halloween training outfit, as per usually the adults went all out, although one outfit had to be 'deflated' before our match play! This is why we have so much fun at Rockets, its not just about Netball but having a laugh and socialising with friends!

Hadleigh U3A On Monday 10th December 2018 Hadleigh U3A will be meeting at 2.30pm in the Hadleigh URC where Stephen Ashworth will be talking about, ‘Sounds of SantaHope’. All members and prospective members are welcome.

Kersey Mill Newsletter Gosh its Christmas time again! Santa’s workshop is up and running with record numbers of tickets being sold. We added further sessions this year but again demand will outstrip supply. For last minute tickets do please call. All proceeds go to the restoration fund and we thank everyone who helps with the event and supports it by attending.

It has been a very good year for the mill all round with approximately 8000 visitors to the mill alone, all interested in the restoration project that is ongoing.

The Hurst Frame is now complete and our attentions and efforts in the new year will focus on the reinstatement of the runner stones and the stone furniture.

The millstones are surrounded by a wooden or in some instances a metal case. The three water driven stones at Kersey Mill will each have a wooden case or tun also known as a vat, it is like a barrel. Its purpose is to collect the flour that has been ground between the stones and ensure it is directed out of the stones and down the spout to the waiting sack below.

On top of the case sits the hopper legs (horse) and hopper. Grain is fed from the hopper into the stones by the shoe.

The flow of grain into the stones is regulated by how fast the shoe is shaken. If the stone furniture is not built correctly then the grain will not flow into the stones properly. If the slope of the shoe is too steep grain will flow too quickly, if the slope is too shallow grain will not flow at all.

The shoe also needs to be the correct shape to keep the grain from falling out of the side and on top of the stones. The grain will not be ground and instead will end us as whole grain in the flour spoiling it.

We anticipate these works commencing in January and should hopefully be completed during 2019.

Now the War is Over In this article we remember: John Lionel Bacon 1 December 1918 Frederick Ramplin 9 December 1918 Throughout December 1918 many men were coming home, but on leave only. In Hadleigh there seems to have been a good deal of misunderstanding with regard to demobilisation. Men came home expecting to be released at once from the army and to return to former occupations. But demobilisation was a massive undertaking; the army had swollen from its pre-war strength of 400,000 to 3,800,000. Plus the whole logistical wind down of the war and munitions industry was no simple task. In the immediate relief brought by the Armistice deal, Prime Minster David Lloyd George took the high ground and called a parliamentary election for 14 December. Hadleigh was in the Sudbury Constituency and it would be a three cornered fight with Captain Richard Proby claiming support from Lloyd George for the continued Coalition Government. Proby held public meetings in a belligerent mood at the Layham School and at Hadleigh Town Hall. On the day of the election it rained for most of the day in Hadleigh, there was little enthusiasm and there was confusion because the polling station for Hadleigh, Layham and Kersey had moved from the British Schools (now the Ansell Centre) to the Council School in Station Road (now Hadleigh Community Primary). Less than half the electorate took the trouble to vote and given that this was the first time women could vote, the local newspaper reckoned that the male voters were in the minority. Nationally there was a land slide in support of Lloyd George, but Sudbury bucked the trend and returned the Liberal, Major Stephen Howard an officer in the 2nd Suffolk Volunteer Regiment.

During December 1918 two Hadleigh men died as a result of the war. The Rev John Lionel Bacon who served as a chaplain to the Chinese Labour Battalions died of pneumonia at La Havre in France possibly as a result of contracting influenza. John Bacon was born at Friars Hall Hadleigh in 1882, son of William Bacon landowner, farmer and owner of the brickworks at the end of Corks Lane. William died in 1890 and by 1901 the family had moved to Acton in west London. John trained in theology in association with Durham University, was ordained a priest in the Anglian church in 1911 and went out as a missionary to China under the aegis of the Church Missionary Society. With his wife, Charlotte who was a doctor, they founded a hospital in South Central China. He is known to have visited Hadleigh on a number of occasions to talk on his work. He took the post of assistant curate at Christ Church Woking, Surrey in 1917 and in May 1918 arrived in France as chaplain with the YMCA. He is buried at the Sainte Marie Cemetery at La Havre. John Bacon is remembered at Woking in Christ Church and on the Town War Memorial as well as at Hadleigh. He was awarded the British War Medal as a single medal, because although his service was overseas it was not directly in the theatre of war.

Gunner Frederick Ramplin was a long term regular soldier. He was born in 1878 the son of Frederick senior and Elizabeth who lived in New Cut and had four brothers, two of whom would not survive the Great War; Harry was killed at Ypres in 1915 and Charles was lost on HMS Bombala in April 1918. Frederick was the eldest and he enlisted with the Suffolk Regiment in 1899 and served in the Second Boer War where he was awarded the Queen’s South African Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. Because he had served greater than 18 months in this conflict he was also awarded the King’s South African Medal. In October 1902 he attested with the Royal Garrison Artillery and between 1905 and 1911 served in Gibraltar. He was with the RGA at the beginning of the Great War. During the later part of 1914 Frederick Ramplin served on the crown colony island of St Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. In 1915 he was back in England and he married at Lexden, Essex and the same year had a son.

The next two years he spent in India and Burma returning to England in December 1917 but was medically discharged from the service in March 1918 as being no longer physically fit, suffering from disease. His discharge papers give his character as “exemplary – a sober, steady and industrious man.” His condition deteriorated and he died in hospital in Melton in December 1918. After his death his body was returned to Hadleigh and buried in the town’s cemetery. Frederick Ramplin was awarded the British War Medal as a single campaign medal, but in respect for his long military career his widow was also given the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

Hadleigh Walkers For our November walk we had 18 join us for a leisurely 6 miles to the North of Stratford St Mary. By good fortune we managed to pick the one fine day between two foul ones – all part of the service!

Our December walk on Saturday 8th will be a slightly longer one of approximately 9.5 miles starting at Ipswich and making our way back to Hadleigh via Hintlesham (where those wanting a shorter walk of circa 6 miles can catch a bus back to Hadleigh from outside the George). Our plan is to catch the 91 bus towards Ipswich Co-op side at 0925 and alight at the entrance to Chantry Park. We will then proceed to Sproughton, follow the East bank of the River Gipping to Bramford, then Runcton Farm, Thornbush Hall, Grindle Farm, Burstall Hall, Walnut Farm, Burstal, Mill Farm, Hintlesham Park, Ram’s Farm, Cobbold Farm and into Hadleigh via Durrants Farm. Those electing for the shorter walk will leave us at Home Wood and walk the short distance into Hintlesham to catch a Hadleigh bound bus at 1303 or 1433.

Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

Looking further out, in January we will do our usual New Year walk starting in Hadleigh and ending up at the George. More detail later. If anyone has a favourite part of the local area to visit please give us your suggestions and we’ll do our best to create a walk. We’re always open to new ideas.

The DIY Deli TARALLINI Tarallini is a form of savoury biscuit, typically formed into rings, widely eaten in southern Italy as a snack food. Special equipment needed: A pestle & mortar or other grinding tool Ingredients 4oz plain wheat flour 50 ml dry white wine; a French sauvignon blanc is ideal 40 ml extra virgin olive oil Fennel seeds to taste 1 level teaspoon is about right A pinch of salt Method 1. Place the flour into a bowl and fold in the coarsely ground fennel seeds & salt with a dry spoon.

2. Drizzle in the oil & wine; mix with a fork to form a dough.

3. Place the dough on a floured surface & knead by hand; it will take around 5 minutes to arrive at a bouncy texture.

4. Tear off pieces around the size of a large hazelnut & roll between floured hands to form a cylinder around 3 inches long & the thickness of a pencil; join the ends, one on top of the other, to form a ring. The mix should be enough for 30-40 rings.

5. Pre-heat the oven to 190ºC. 6. Bring a pan of water to the boil & have some absorbent kitchen paper at the ready.

7. Drop in the dough rings & watch them come to the surface; as soon as they do (a matter of seconds), lift them out with a slotted spoon & place on the paper.

8. Place the rings on a non-stick tray & bake until crisp & golden; it will take around 20 minutes 9. Allow to cool on a wire rack; store in an airtight container until you are ready to enjoy.

Serving suggestion: these are very tasty on their own; you might like to try place a pimento stuffed olive on top before popping them in your mouth.

The story of Hadleigh’s League season so far makes impressive reading: Played 9 Won 9; Points Scored 510 Points conceded 49. Recent games have seen the Rams defeat Ipswich 22 -3, Harwich 136 – 0 and Halstead Templars 60 – 28. It is not just the victories that have been so impressive, but the manner in which they have been achieved. The team has scored over 80 tries while conceding only 7. Visitors to our Layham Road ground have enjoyed some exhilarating rugby during the best start to a season for many years.

Over the next few months, we intend to play some Second Team games as part of the club’s commitment to developing its’ player base at senior level. We welcome new or returning players. Training nights are Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30pm. More details can be found at hadleighrfc.rfu.club.

Mascot Day at The Millfield Hadleigh Youth Section’s Minis & Diddies and our newest players, the Wildcats, held a Mascot Day on Saturday to support Hadleigh United’s First Team game against Gorleston. A hugely successful turnout of around 50 children, aged from 5 to 11 years took part in fun warm ups and training sessions, then split up to play mini games on the main pitch. Half time saw a penalty shoot out with parents dressed in bear outfits in goal.

Fortunately, the weather held out and the children were able to take full advantage of being the centre of attention. The Minis and Diddies, for girls and boys aged 5-9 years have sessions on Saturday mornings and the girls only Wildcats, have their session on Tuesday evenings, all led by our Community Football Co-ordinator, Gavin Peters.

Difficult start in League for Hadleigh Table Tennis Club After a resounding win in last season’s Division Two and an added bonus in capturing the League’s Handicap Cup Hadleigh “A” find themselves struggling after promotion to Division One. After seven games they are currently in the bottom three positions having won one, drew one, and lost five. Rex Manning has dropped out this season and has been replaced by Desmond Hindle, formerly of St Margarets Manor. Although beaten 7-3 in their last match by BT Bright Stars 14 year old Daniel Young was impressive for Hadleigh with a maximum three wins. He also obtained “maximums” in his previous two games and remains unbeaten. With still thirteen games to play a sterling effort will be required to keep them in the higher Division.

Hadleigh “Owls” playing in Division Three are currently having mixed fortunes having won three and losing four of their opening fixtures. Now down to four players they find themselves just in the lower half of the table. In their last game against Rosary Green, David Rickett secured the sole singles win.

However David has upped his game this season having won 56% of his games so far, closely followed by Dean Abbott on 45%. Against Rosary Dean was unlucky to lose all three singles by the same margin 3-2. Better results are yet to come from Captain Rupert Pyett who has been carrying a leg injury since the start of the season. A keen member, Robert Southgate, fills the fourth berth.

Captain Drive In at Stoke During the week commencing the 5th of November, all the sections at Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club held their AGMs and elected a new captain. This then culminated in the club AGM being held on the 9th in the evening when some of the prestigious trophies from each section were handed out to the winners.

Early Saturday morning the new men’s captain, John Sandford, had breakfast for over 200 players in the Devora suite followed by “The Captain’s Drive-in”, a shotgun start better-ball competition on both courses. John and the other section new captains were watched by the club members as they drove down the first.

Afterwards the players gathered in the Devora Suite again to hear the results of the competition and who guessed the length of the drives correctly in the sweep. Pictured are John and the new ladies captain, Diana Harris, on the first tee before being introduced to the crowd. The new seniors captain for the coming year is Ian Bickers and the new junior captain is Harry English.

The winners of the 2 competitions were Richard Bland & Steve Wood on the Gainsborough course with a score of 45 stableford points, and Andy Adams & Trevor Brace with a score of 42 on the Constable course.

On the Sunday, 25 pairs played in the “Captain / Pro Challenge” qualifying competition, on the Constable course, for the chance to play again the Captain and a professional during the coming year. With the top 10 qualifying, the bar was set quite high with only those scoring 39 points or more getting through.

The competition was won by Eric Fisher and Shaun Underwood with 42 points.

Despite all of the rain on Friday and Saturday evening, the golf days were both played in very good conditions. Hopefully a good omen for the coming year.

Thanks go to all the volunteers who helped set up on the day and work hard on the night making sure things ran smoothly.

But the biggest thanks go to the 1200 spectators who turned out on the night to make the night a success. On that note we hope to do it all again on 1st November 2019.

First Team News October 23rd saw us overcome Brightlingsea Regent Res in the League Cup and we have been drawn away to Long Melford on 21st November (more on this next month). Th3 next match saw us suffer a 4-1 defeat at home to Gorleston, but better luck with our trip to Norfolk to play Norwich Utd as we battled hard to bring home all the points winning 2-1. Our next match 10th November saw us host League Leaders Histon, who ran out 4-0 winners on the day. Tuesday 13th saw us host Bury Town who play in the Bostik North League this was a Suffolk Premier Cup match. Bury arrived thinking it was a "case of we just turn up and the game is ours" (wrong) we took the game to Bury from the start taking the lead on 15mins when Kieran Turner fired in an angled shot, Bury pressed for the equaliser, but we created plenty of chances, scoring again just on half time when Romario Dunne fired in a powerful free kick over the defensive wall and past the static Bury 'keeper.

Romario Dunne scored our third goal with another wonder strike as he lobbed the ball in over the static 'keeper with the ball going in off the underside of the bar. Bury pulled a goal back with 15 minutes to go but it proved to little to late as we won 3-1 and secured a place in the quarter finals match to be play in the New Year. On the player front Kane Munday who joined on loan from AFC Sudbury has returned to his home Club as his loan spell has ended.

Reserve Team News 4 matches played and four wins. The first a 4-1 home win against Haverhill Rovers Res, followed by a trip to the "Essex Sunshine Coast to play Holland F.C returning with a 2-1 victory. This was followed by a short trip to Whitton Utd Res returning again with a 2-1 victory. 10th November saw them in Cup action as they travelled to Rushmere (Ipswich) to play Westerfield Utd Res in the 2nd round of the Suffolk Senior Res Cup, this by all accounts was a tough match, but we ran out winners (3-2) thanks to a Shane Murphy hat-trick, we now meet Trimley Red Devils Res in the next round on 16th February. Player news we are sorry to see Garry Burdett leave as he wishes to try his hand back at a higher level and wish him well Under 18's News 3 matches played, 1 wins, 1 drawn, 1 lost and 1 postponed.

24th October saw us host Stowmarket Town, this match saw fast and furious play through out as both teams went all out for the win, but it was Stowmarket who clinched the win with a late goal to win 3-2. Our scheduled match on 1st November at Felixstowe fell foul to the weather as we suffered heavy rain all day. 7th November we hosted a powerful Walsham-le-Willows side (one of the teams looking to win the league). This match was reminiscent of the Stowmarket match 0-0 at half time Walsham took the lead on 56 mins, but we battled back with Curtis Harvey levelling on 71 mins and Jaryd Challis putting us ahead on 80 mins leading to a tense last ten minutes as Walsham looked to level but we hung on to take the points and remain top. 15th November saw the return league fixture at Walsham, this time the honours were even with a 2-2 with a splendid all round team performance by the Hadleigh players with Ryan Chidlow and Jaryd Challis our scorers. This draw was not enough to hold on to top spot (at time of these notes) as other results saw us drop to 3rd spot with matches in hand.
