Electric charging points are here!

An Electric Vehicle Charging Point has been installed at the Maiden Way Car Park in Hadleigh, making the town more accessible for green minded motorists.

Babergh District Council has installed the ‘fast’ charging point and now opened it for public use. Up to two cars at a time can use the point, at two special parking bays in the Maiden Way Car Park on Magdalen Road, Hadleigh. Electric vehicles can charge using the Type 2 Mennekes connector, the most common electric charging connection.

The point provides electricity at a cost of 30p per kW with a £1 connection fee. Payment is accepted via a smartphone app or using a contactless RFID Card available from EVDriver.

The charging point was installed by EV Driver, a company who have installed charging points across the UK and worked towards CO2 reduction over the last nine years. This is the second charging point installed by EV Driver for Babergh District Council, following a similar point installed in the Kingfisher Leisure Centre Car Park in Sudbury last September.

Cllr Tina Campbell, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Car emissions are one of the largest contributors to air pollution, which can have a devastating impact on people’s health as well as on the environment. We are encouraging motorists to swap their petrol or diesel cars for electric vehicles and making it easier for them to do so by installing this charging point. This will enable residents and visitors to Hadleigh to travel in a more environmentally-friendly way.”

The Visit Hadleigh Suffolk website (www.visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk) has now been live for two years. In that time the site has gone from strength to strength, so much so that in June we saw 9000 visits to the site, the highest number so far. Averaging 335 visits per day!

The Visit Hadleigh website promotes tourism and provides local information about events, town tours, shopping, eating out and places to stay. It also features the history of our town, local clubs and things to see and do.

We are delighted to announce that we have just secured funding from Babergh Mid Suffolk District Council to launch our very own Youtube Channel. This exciting and creative addition to the site means we can film short videos each month to highlight specific events and features, promoting all that is great about Hadleigh.

Angel Court – Future Plans

By Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor You may have noticed some information boards displayed outside the Angel Court site recently. The boards are one of the ways residents and the community can have the opportunity to see the plans for the site. I am sure many of you are wondering what is actually happening and would be pleased to know the real facts with so many rumours circulating.

The site of the former Angel Court care home, at the High Street end of Angel Street, occupies one of the key locations in Hadleigh and many of us have fond memories of the care home, so I think all of us want to see the site used well.

A consultation event was held at the Guildhall in Hadleigh on 11th July where members of the public were invited to view and comment on the proposals for new homes at the Angel Court site. The public display and consultation was hosted by Babergh District Council, along with development partners, Ingleton Wood and Iceni Homes. The proposals include constructing 21 affordable homes on the former care home site.

The cost of buying a home in Babergh is approx. 9 times average salary levels, in addition to this we have 1,751 active households in Babergh and Mid Suffolk on the housing register. Babergh & Mid Suffolk’s Joint Strategic Plan & Refresh sets the priorities for Housing Delivery, and Assets and Investments for estate regeneration to make best use of housing and land assets across the Suffolk system.

To address the pressing housing need Babergh have looked at a number of ways to use their own resources and also team up with others to free up land and sites which are suitable for redevelopment. This work has now culminated in an agreed joint affordable housing development strategy which sets out an exciting and ambitious programme for building new homes over the next 3 to 5 years. Both Councils own a range of homes, land and garage sites and these are reviewed regularly for opportunities to build additional homes. We have also purchased four sites from Suffolk County Council, all of which are located in the key market towns of Eye, Hadleigh, Needham Market and Stowmarket.

For Babergh District Council this includes the former Angel Court Care Home.

It is anticipated that the proposed scheme will be 100% affordable, this is likely to comprise shared ownership and affordable rent units.

The approximate timescales are: Planning Submission: Late July /early August 2018; Planning Determination: Late October / early November 2018; Construction Start: June 2019; Completion: June 2020.

For the forthcoming by-elections for the two vacancies on Hadleigh Town Council to be held on 2nd August, Brian Loftus and Glenn Root have decided to stand on a joint independent platform to promote reconciliation and reunification of the council corporate body to gain improvements and efficiencies in functionality, under the auspice of

“One Hadleigh…...One Council” Brian and Glenn have known each other for about 20 years. They have worked voluntarily together as allies, collaborators and supporters for a variety of community biased groups, schemes and causes including working with Hadleigh Town Council (HTC). It all seems to have started in the late 90’s by helping The Lions to put Xmas trees up in the High Street which has continued to the present day as Brian and Glenn (along with a team of volunteers) are still organising the Xmas trees now working in conjunction with HTC. Following an open public meeting in September 2002 it was agreed that the Hadleigh Town Forum (HTF) would be ‘reactivated’ by HTC with a remit to look at matters and issues that might affect the town and organising future community events.

This subsequently led to Hadleigh Entertainments Committee (HEC) being set up to cover this and so Brian and Glenn duly became founder members of both the HTF and HEC. Many residents will remember the battle that ensued back in 2004 when Babergh DC proposed to close Hadleigh swimming pool. Along with other local groups and residents, Brian, Glenn and HTF members were at the forefront of the campaign to save the pool by challenging and denigrating the various engineer reports and cost data that Babergh DC presented as justification for their proposal….and in 2007 success, as you know the pool got its reprieve.

A very busy decade for HEC members with Brian serving as Deputy Chairman and Glenn serving as Treasurer for several years, provided residents with summer carnivals & parades, street fayres, quizzes, darts competitions, car boot sales, talent shows and free music events at Layham Road sportsground and St. Marys School field. In addition, HEC organised the Christmas trees in the High Street, Xmas Street Fayres and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting-up in the Market Place together with the very important fundraising events of Spring and Autumn Craft Fairs in the Guildhall complex which financed the other events throughout the year.

Brian and Glenn are still helping out at the Autumn Craft Fairs although now it is run by and for the benefit of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment charity.

Norman Tebbit was an MP from 1970 – 1991, having served as a BOAC pilot/navigator before that. He held many offices while an MP, including Parliamentary-under-Secretary of State for Trade 1979; Minister of State for Industry 1981; Secretary of State for Employment 1981; Secretary for Trade and Industry 1983; Chancellor Duchy of Lancaster and Chairman of Conservative Party 1985-1987. He was a member of Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinet. Many of us will remember that he was severely injured in the IRA bombing of the Grand Hotel, Brighton in 1984. He was awarded the Companion of Honour in 1987 and entered the House of Lords in 1992.

We are delighted that Norman Tebbit has agreed to this ‘Parkinson-style’ interview. We will be asking him about his public life and his life in Suffolk.

There will be an opportunity for questions.

A New Kid on the Block The arrival of Shearman the Sheep in St Mary’s Churchyard was recently celebrated in St Mary’s Church. This fine sculpture of a Suffolk Sheep was created, just for our town, by Ben Bramma of Ben Bramma Metal Sculptures as a legacy of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015.

Every year in the UK, approximately 2.3m people experience problems with earwax and need to have it removed. SEH BAC charity initiative a hit with both staff and community Award-winning home improvement firm SEH BAC is well known for its work in the community – and another staff initiative has been given the thumbs up. Every SEH BAC member of staff can take a paid day off work to do community work and support worthy causes.

This could be anything from giving your local scout hut a lick of paint, volunteering at a local community centre, or helping with a charity event. It’s all thanks to an initiative from SEH BAC’s parent company, the Ipswich-based One Group Construction and it’s One Group Foundation.

One Group Construction is a £160M group of specialist construction companies which complete major infrastructure and construction projects across the UK. Employees from across the group have taken part in charitable golf days, competed in marathons, volunteered at soup kitchens and thrown themselves into charitable walks and treks, all for worthy causes.

Since its launch in August 2017, the foundation has supported more than 33 Foundation Days and by doing so, One Group have played a part in raising £142k for various charities, not by donating money themselves but by employees raising money through Just Giving pages and charity days. Karla Bryan from SEH BAC, who volunteered at a homeless shelter, said: “I had a really enjoyable day and it was a very rewarding experience to be able to help those in need. Since then I have set up my own soup kitchen in Southend called One Love Soup Kitchen to help people who are sleeping rough. “The Foundation Days are a wonderful idea and it is great that SEH BAC see charity work and volunteering as an important and integral part of what they do.”

I am a part time Practice Nurse at Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice and a part time Parish Nurse in Capel St Mary. I have decided to "brave the shave" and have my head shaved to raise money for Macmillan.

Statistics now suggest that 1 in 2 of us will be affect by cancer at some point in our lives. I want to raise money to support these people. In the run up, I let my daughter, Sophie (7) decide what colour to dye my hair so I have red and purple hair for the next month. It has started a lot of conversations at work and at school! I am having my head shaved at Hadleigh Health Centre on Friday 3rd August at 12 noon for anyone who would like to come down and watch! Sophie is looking forward to helping shave my head.

Meanwhile, here is my cousin Janet’s utterly scrumptious recipe for chocolate brownies. I make no apologies for imperial measures!

Chocolate Brownies 2½ oz butter, 2 oz 70% chocolate, 6 oz caster sugar 2½ oz self-raising flour, Pinch of salt, 2 eggs ½ teaspoon vanilla essence, 2 oz shelled walnuts Grease and flour a shallow 8” square tin. Melt the butter and chocolate in a bowl over boiling water, and add the sugar. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl, and stir in the chocolate mixture, beaten eggs, vanilla essence and chopped walnuts. Beat the mixture until smooth, then spoon into the prepared tin. (Don’t get worried that it doesn’t look like a cake mixture because it will be very sloppy, essentially a pouring consistency.)

Bake in the centre of an oven pre-heated to 3500 F (1750 C) for about 35 minutes or until the mixture is risen and beginning to leave the sides of the tin.

Leave in the tin to cool slightly before cutting the cake into 1½”-2” squares.

Hadleigh Artists at Auction Reeman Dansieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bi-annual dedicated auction of East Anglian Art and Artists features significant works from Hadleighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s celebrated East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing, often known as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Benton End Groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The Hadleigh Historian This issueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offerings focus on Hadleigh The Hadleigh Historian inhabitants from 1618 to 1967. As part of The Hadleigh Historian Representation of the People Act passed in Issue 47 August - September 2018 Price ÂŁ3 February 1918, women over the age of 30 were allowed to vote. (It was not for another 10 years before women were given equal rights with men in this matter.) Earlier, various groups had been staging events to highlight inequalities in these rights including the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Freedom League, which had members in Hadleigh. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;When No.19 was empty on census nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; looks at the activities taken in 1911 by two families to promote the slogan â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;If women donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t count, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t count womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Who would of thought that Gallows Hill was the centre of female political action, which led to two neighbours defying the law? â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Born in Hadleigh and died at seaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; relates to the tale of Samuel Sparrow, a cabinet maker caught up in the sinking of the Royal George in 1782, which was considered to be a national disaster.

Extracts from Audrey Bennettâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scrap books come to newspaper cuttings from the 1960s and includes a wedding, a golden wedding anniversary, a retirement presentation, a Christmas party and the Miss Hadleigh competition. No bathing costumes here as the 23 entrants in 1962 were judged on their appearance, deportment, speech and personality.

The early career in the Church of Thomas Goad (1576-1638) started well as he had every chance of becoming a bishop. In 1618, he was appointed rector of Hadleigh, a position seen by many at the time as an indication of better things to come, and the following year, he represented King James I (16031625) at the Synod of Dort. However, on his return to England, promotions passed Thomas and he eventually settled down to decorating St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s church and founding further almshouses in George Street. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Up the ladder to Hadleigh but no further (part 1)â&#x20AC;&#x2122; looks at the reasons for his lack of advancement and also finds his memorial under a carpet.

The inspector who visited the Kingsley Healthcare run home on May 15 found the service to be good overall and good in every category, judging it to be safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

The inspection was the first since Kingsley took over the home last year, committing significant investment on improving the building and landscaping the gardens.

The report observes that “people were cared for and supported by staff who knew them well and understood their preferences and dislikes”.

Staff responded quickly to residents’ requests for assistance and always took time to talk to them, not rushing away to perform other tasks.

The report praises the home’s daily activities and observes that staff know what individuals like to do.

Home manager Marie Smale said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are passionate about providing outstanding care at Hadleigh Nursing Home and are thrilled to receive such a positive first report.â&#x20AC;? The inspector reports the positive comments of residents, one of whom told him: â&#x20AC;&#x153;All of the staff are very nice indeedâ&#x20AC;?. Another said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The staff always respect my dignity and that is very important to me.â&#x20AC;? The report observes that â&#x20AC;&#x153;people were cared for and supported by staff who knew them well and understood their preferences and dislikesâ&#x20AC;?.

Care plans clearly showed people had been involved and supported in how their care was planned and delivered. The inspector found there were enough staff on duty day and night and observed that robust procedures were in place for recruitment. Staff responded quickly to residentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; requests for assistance and always took time to talk to them, not rushing away to perform other tasks.

The inspector found that systems are in place for on-going training; and one member of staff told him that the most effective training they had completed was by wearing an age simulation suit (Gert). He explained this enabled the wearer to experience what it felt like to have conditions such as visual impairment, hearing loss, compromised mobility and tremors. The report praises the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daily activities and observes that staff know what individuals like to do. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We observed a person happily walking round the garden with a member of staff. This person was smiling and chatting about the plants and we saw the staff member cheerfully interacting with them,â&#x20AC;? said the inspector. The report notes that residents were complimentary about senior staff at the home.

The Ipswich Hospital Gynaecology Department Bladder Scanner Appeal A well supported coffee morning in April, and a sponsored zipwire challenge from the top of the maternity block at the hospital (all 120 feet of it) raised the grand sum of ÂŁ1755, which includes gift aid. A huge THANK YOU to all of you who have been so supportive of this venture. I have been totally amazed at the generosity of people - some, complete strangers. I have spoken with members of the gynaecology department, who are absolutely delighted with the final figure. They have assured me that the new bladder scanner will be ordered asap.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk At last, some good news for constituents on the controversial matter of housing. Of all the issues that face our communities, I can think of none more controversial – including Brexit – than where homes should or should not be built. But for the time being at least, we have just gained a little more control over that difficult decision making process.

Babergh’s biggest issue with housing developments has been the five-year land supply planning policy. Since April 2017, Babergh has not been able to demonstrate this supply which left them open to speculative planning applications that would not normally have been accepted under their local planning policies. In fact, I recently held a parliamentary debate on this policy to outline the issues that we have faced.

As such, I am delighted that Babergh District Council has now announced that they have restored the five-year land supply bringing much greater control over planning decisions back to local people. It also means that local policies once again become the priority in considering applications, including neighbourhood plans, ensuring the development is decided by our locally elected representatives, instead of increasingly relying on the planning inspector over whom we have little or no accountability.

Of course, it is worth stressing that does not mean we will suddenly stop seeing new homes built in Babergh. Nor will ‘unpopular’ development cease since homes have to go somewhere. What we need to see is a sustainable level of delivery, a sweet spot resulting in neither disproportionately developing in inappropriate locations nor seeing any single proposal for new homes opposed and defeated.

We should also remember that developers could potentially appeal the presence of a five-year land supply and so it remains vital not only that Babergh continues to work to deliver its joint local plan, but that communities continue to prepare neighbourhood plans. If anyone in a village considering a neighbourhood plan thinks this positive change is reason not to produce one I would argue the opposite: this is the ideal time to get a neighbourhood plan in place so that communities are ready if at some point in the future we once again lose our five-year land supply.

The Annual Clopton Rose Ceremony Hadleigh’s payment of a rose

In 1438 William Clopton, Lord of Toppesfield Manor, gave to the people of Hadleigh a Market House and lands upon which to build the Guildhall with all the market rights, the rent originally being one mark a year. This was later converted to the token rent of one single red rose. In 1984 Gene Clopton discovered that the rent was many years in arrears and asked for the people of Hadleigh to pay up! This they duly did and have done so ever since. The Mayor of Hadleigh presents the rose in payment at a ceremony in Long Melford Church and the rose placed on the tomb in the church of William Clopton. It is considered to be one of the oldest rents still payable anywhere in the country.

Fidelis Activity News Belchamp Hall: By the time this goes to print Fidelis will be in its 13th year and ready to enjoy another full programme of speakers and events until June 2019.

First in the new club year was a Sunday outing to the elegant Belchamp Hall at Belchamp Walter. Members were warmly greeted by PA, Helen Turner, and resident owner Charles Raymond (photo centre). Charles wasted no time in introducing the group to his ancestors via the many paintings which adorned the walls in every room. It is a light cheery house with many unique architectural features and an eclectic collection of antique furniture and memorabilia. The group were able to enjoy Charlesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; many entertaining anecdotes and background stories about his home and past family members. The tour ended with refreshments in the converted stable block and a wander round the gardens and nearby church. A most enjoyable, relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Lunch Bunch: Assington Barns was the venue for the monthly foodie gathering. This small rural complex has changed considerably since our last visit. The restaurant has been greatly extended and the garden centre has disappeared. The menu offered diners a wide choice of tasty lunch dishes plus several different all day breakfasts. We enjoyed a leisurely meal and the opportunity to shop afterwards at the Gift and Farm Shops next to the restaurant.

Croquet: Taster sessions are a wonderful way to try your hand at a new sport especially if that happens to be croquet. Fran Rousham, from Ipswich Croquet Club, patiently introduced members to the basics i.e. choosing and holding a mallet before allowing us onto the desiccated lawns to practice. We were soon able to have a game only needing some directional guidance to be sure the balls went through the hoops in the correct order and direction. Everyone enjoyed the challenge regardless of their ability and after some seasonal refreshments, took up their mallets once again. JD

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre ‘Babs and I won’t be giving anyone any trouble’ my famous last words in my July blog! Well I’m ashamed to say I developed a nasty rattle in my works last month, and the simulator team that does my service said “NO MORE WORK” until I’m fixed. So big thanks to Babs my room mate, who has taken over all my rides for me until such time as the engineers can visit.

Outside everything has been going well: my rider Rebecca Page passed her Gold award for Horse Care Proficiency, the highest achievement possible for an RDA rider, and no mean test of her brains and commitment, not to mention perseverance. I have been listening in and trying to learn with her, but really she knows so much more than me, so all I did was concentrate on giving her good rides whilst she and Margaret covered the curriculum. You can see most of me on the left in the photo of Rebecca getting her certificate from Sue Diggings.

Next, Evie, one of my Friday riders, just coolly writes a play and has it staged at The Red Rose Theatre in Ipswich! She was the star of the show and her play highlighted the frustrations of being wheel chair bound, and having to accept this as one’s lot. Evie, I know how you feel, I’m stuck too, and my joys come from meeting people just like you.

Our pony riders showed off their skills at the Shelley Show on 24th June.

Another beautiful day meant that everyone shone. The newly bathed ponies glistened, the well turned out competitors sparkled and the guests glowed with pride. Please visit our website to see the results of this great day, I rather think everyone was a winner, including the Shelley Team of volunteers who made the day possible.

There is a new bench for people to sit on the yard: it arrived last month and is already much appreciated. Presented to us in loving memory of Mike Sands, a long term supporter of the Centre, who was also a Rotarian. The collection at his funeral was distributed by his branch of the Rotary Club to several charities with which Mike was involved, and we were included in this bequest.

Mike’s wife Kate is a Thursday coach here, and has been involved with RDA for thirty years or so, even visiting an RDA branch in New Zealand sometimes.

The last piece of the Masonic Charitable Foundation’s grant has been spent on resurfacing the arena where all the hundreds of feet, both equine and human, walk the walk. Its where most or the work takes place, and a good surface is vital for the health and well being of the ponies. Volunteers are quite appreciative of good conditions too. So a big thank you to MCF for awarding us the money that has injected so much new equipment into the Centre to enable our wonderful riders to do their best.

The AGM of the Management Committee took place in our yard on 3rd July.

The wonderful weather enabled everyone to be seated outside, making it look like a party! My picture shows our chairman Jan Derbyshire giving the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award to David Hills. I could hear the clapping from my quiet room. Thanks, David, and thank you to the committee and the BBQ team for a smashing end of year feast.

Held at Hadleigh Leisure Centre Monday 2 July 2018 @ 4.15pm Previous Minutes: No Minutes were taken at the last meeting; however, the report of the meeting was agreed. It should be noted that the regular Saturday morning walking tours do not require people to book, people can simply turn up.

Points raised at the previous meeting that have since been addressed are: • Hooks have now been added to the toilet doors in Magdalen Road • A new bench pf the previously discussed circular design should be installed on the market place by the 1st week of August • Angel Court – there will be an information event on the 11th July at the Guild room between 2pm and 8pm Main Agenda Item: Hadleigh Swimming Pool – Presentation by Tracey Loynds CEO of South Suffolk Leisure and Stephen Clarke Senior Survey for Babergh District council. First opened in 1971, South Suffolk Leisure have managed the pool and leisure site since 2006. The business model ensures that all profits are re-invested into the business. The facility is very well used by casual swimmers, formal classes, clubs, and schools. 87% of school swimmers achieve their 25m certificate with Hadleigh pool against a national average of 31%. Users are spread across all ages with 60% being women and 40% men. Extensive public consultation was carried out prior to the plans being finalised, there was a strong interest in these events as the pool is important to the community of Hadleigh and the surrounding area.

The group were shown photos from the construction of the original site and other information and drawings that were used during the consultation. Views and feedback were also sought from customers, school users, clubs, and national sports bodies on how a new pool should be built. The outcome from the feedback and other considerations is that the design incorporates the following: • The new pool has been designed to be slightly wider at 10.5m which will enable an additional full-size lane for competition use.

• Overall the depth is shallower at .9 – 1.8m but this will be deep enough to allow shallow dive entry at both ends of the pool.

• The poolside will no longer be higher, with the water being level for ease of use.

• In addition to traditional ladder entry to the pool there will be a step access with a handrail and an additional means of access for those with disabilities which is still being finalised, it is likely to be a specialist pool wheelchair platform that can be controlled by the user.

• The current changing rooms will remain but there will be an additional “changing places” changing room that will support people with sever and complex disabilities to access the pool, this will be close to the poolside and will also be accessible to the public to provide a toilet facility to people visiting the town that have complex needs.

• The pool will be accessed by a corridor from the main changing rooms.

• There will be a sauna • Advice from Sport England has indicated that poolside should be kept clear, therefore all equipment will be in dedicated storage rather than on poolside, and poolside seating will be minimal but with an option to bring in additional for galas etc.

• The pool size, layout and lighting will be suitable for local competition and time trial use • The build for the site is expected to take approx. 200 days, starting in March 2019, and ending a few days before Christmas. The new pool should be open on the 2nd January 2020.

The final plans and detail are still being agreed and will be submitted shortly.

The final agreement will require approval by Babergh Cabinet, but it is anticipated that a planning application will be submitted in September.

The group asked; • Whether there are any plans to incorporate solar or renewable technology in the build? The build will include a high standard of energy efficiency measures ensuring that the building is significantly more efficient that the current one, however the use of solar panels hasn’t been fully explored.

Stephen Clarke will investigate this.

• Will there be a children’s pool? Unfortunately, there wasn’t adequate space or funding to include a children’s splash pool, there are however other private pools nearby that do offer these • Will the pool be closed? There will be a period at the end of the build when to switch the plant room over to heat and run the new pool it will be essential to have a period where neither pool is available, however the intention will be to keep this to a minimum period.

• What will happen to the old pool area? Feedback from the consultation events stressed the importance of the greenspace in the park and the new pool will be taking some of this. Therefore, the old pool will be returned to greenspace to offset the loss.

• Where will the funding come from? Following on from community consultation in 2005 Hadleigh Town council increased the precept on our council tax. This money was put into a ‘ring fenced’ account for a new swimming pool in Hadleigh. We are pleased to announce that Hadleigh Town Council has made a capital contribution of around £200,000 towards the new pool and are committed to contribute the precept collection of

around £30,000 per year towards the borrowing costs of replacing the pool.

The additional costs will be borrowed by Babergh District Council and paid back by South Suffolk Leisure.

Tidy Town: The weekly litter picks are going very well, with evening picks planned due to the high daytime temperatures. Thanks were passed to Tracey Loynds and her husband for doing a river pick from their rowing boat!

The Hadleigh Music Festival: To be held this weekend, there are 5 events over the course of the weekend including busking and Morris Dancing.

Hadleigh Town Council, the Thrift shop, The Gables, and an anonymous donor have all provided additional funding that will enable a further piano recital and youth events in the autumn Visit Hadleigh Website: The site received 335 views per day during June.

BDC have provided funding for 6 months to cover the development of YouTube clips to include in the site, filming for the first of these has started and there will be a new one each month.

Town Guides: Tours are going well, the Hadleigh Corn Exchange Business Centre is exhibiting art from the gardening and arts festival in their reception, viewing can be only arranged by the town guides. An additional walking with trees tour is booked for the 14th July There was a visitor pop up information centre in the bus station, Magdalen Rd on Hidden Gardens Day, the team saw 5 people and sold all the Hidden Garden programmes.

The sheep sculpture commissioned following the Year of the Sheep festival is currently being made and will be installed in the Church yard once ready.

Town Council: Business at the HTC continues as usual, following the referendum 10 councillors have stated their intention to remain, 2 have not publicly stated their position. There is an election later this week.

Babergh: There will be a public event on the 11th July to share information regarding the future of Angel Court.

Legacy group -Shared images of the information board and one-off art piece that will be displayed in St Mary's churchyard celebrating the wool town heritage PPG: There is an awareness week to start mon 17th Sept and a Healthy Hadleigh banner will be displayed at Morrisons, the co-op and during the Friday market. There is an article in the July HCN promoting the need to ensure that you take adequate prescription medication with you when you travel, but also to only order what you need for everyday use as unused medicines must be destroyed which is a substantial cost to the NHS. AOB: The date for next months meeting will be 13th August, not the 6th as previously advised.

The Porch project AGM is to be held on the 26th July, there will be presentations by the youth workers and an opportunity to see the new offices.

The St Marys fete will be held on the 1st Sept, possibly in the Denery garden or in the Church and church yard.

A second round of interviews for the post of Dean will take place in July.

Wool Towns group have commissioned an agency to put together a brochure similar to that done for the Shotley peninsula they will also be putting g a proposal to the Town Council to include signage indicating that Hadleigh is a Wool town on the town signs Rotary Club of Hadleigh are promoting a campaign to eradicate polio, one of the gardens in Magdalen road has been planted with purple crocus bulbs as part of this campaign.

Partridges are holding an event on the 17th July in the Town Hall to discuss proposals for the building and the business.

Mayor’s Monthly Well here we are in July and it’s hot! All you gardeners out there must be busy watering, I know that I am, having to visit my allotment on a daily basis. At least we don’t need to mow the lawn. I recently went across to Long Melford to pay the annual rent for the Guildhall, the cost is one red rose per annum, courtesy of the Clopton’s family generosity in gifting the building to the town many years ago.

There seems to be some confusion about which council (County, District or Town) is responsible for what around the town. There is a list on the notice board outside of Partridges shop that details them, together with the contact telephone numbers. I am pleased to say that we now have a new chairperson for the Neighbourhood Plan and with help from planning consultants we shall move forwards.

As some of you may be aware, our Town Clerk has been unwell of late and I should like to take this opportunity to thank the rest of the staff for their extra efforts during this time.

Here is a tip I picked up from our recent twinning exchange - to help keep your fruitbowl fresh put old wine corks in with the fruit, they strangely help!

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Guidance for NHS Patients Travelling Abroad 1. NHS Patients travelling for three months or less: 1.1 Pre-existing condition Take with you sufficient medication to cover the journey and to allow you to obtain medical attention abroad. A 28 day prescription is sufficient. If additional medication is required, you are advised to register with a local doctor once abroad. A prescription cannot be issued for patients who are already abroad.

In exceptional cases e.g. where you are constantly travelling and are unable to register with a local doctor; you may be prescribed up to a maximum of 3 months’ supply. Please note that where medication requires frequent monitoring for example warfarin, it may not be appropriate to prescribe for such an extended period.

1.2 Just-in-case Treatments GPs may not prescribe on the NHS any medication which is requested solely in anticipation of the onset of an ailment whilst outside the UK, but for which treatment is not required at the time of prescribing (e.g. travel sickness, altitude sickness, antibiotics or rehydration sachets for diarrhoea).

You are advised to purchase these items where possible. A charge may be levied for writing a private prescription for such pre-emptive medication. For conditions unresponsive to self-medication, you should normally seek medical attention abroad. NB. Many UK prescription only medicines are available to purchase without a prescription abroad.

2. NHS patients living or travelling abroad for more than three months of the year Take with you sufficient medication to cover the journey and to allow the patient to obtain medical attention abroad. A 28 day prescription is sufficient.

You are advised to register with a local doctor for continuing medication; this may need to be paid for by yourself. You should check with the manufacturer that the medicines required are available in the country being visited.

GMS regulations state that patients should be removed from the GP practice list by the NHS England Area Team where notification has been received from the patient that they intend to be away from the UK for a period of at least 3 months.

3. Taking controlled drugs abroad Patients travelling abroad with controlled drugs, irrespective of the duration of travel, are advised to carry a letter, issued by the prescribing doctor or drug worker. Travellers are advised to contact the embassy, consulate or high commission of the country of destination (or any country through which they may be travelling) regarding the legal status and local policy on the importation of controlled drugs.

4. Malaria prophylaxis Patients are advised to purchase prophylaxis over the counter where possible.

Good News about Hadleigh cyclists What a month for the town’s cyclists! Paul Spraggons raised an amazing £14000 for the Prostrate Cancer UK and wore the yellow jersey when he rolled out with 200 cyclists at the Tour de France’s Grand Depart Classic. And four of the Club’s cyclist summited on Ventoux.

Closer to home, we’ve got 40 youngsters at the Juniors every week and a group of ladies who have completed the Get Back on Your Bike course. There was also a fine turn out for the Boxford Tornado and we supported the Mud, Sweat & Gears at Hintlesham.

The 4th annual Gayford Flyer on Sunday, 2nd September 2018. The Gayford Flyer is a non-competitive cycle sportive. There are two signed rides of 62 miles (100km) and 31 miles (50km). Our Cycling Club is anxious to offer the broadest range of opportunities for local folk to enjoy cycling. We want to attract the “super fit” and the “less than super fit”. During the summer we have rides on Mondays, Thursday, some Saturdays and Sunday.

Why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 8am, with a guaranteed café stop, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles.

Hadleigh is investing in their young people Deputy Mayor, Cllr Sue Monks from Hadleigh Town Council is working with the Porch Project, a magnificent youth club that has been operating in Hadleigh for a number of years, to host a careers event for the young people of Hadleigh. Ip-switch is an innovative and exciting opportunity. Local businesses have been invited to attend and talk about the skills they require, about training opportunities and provide advice on career choices. Each employer will occupy a table and chair and our young people will follow a route around the room stopping at set intervals at each desk to talk to the employers.

It is a bit like speed dating, but with a difference!! Cllr Sue Monks and Zach Corrie, a young worker at the Porch Project have been working very hard to put on this event in the community. They are very excited at the prospect of providing an event which will help the young people make choices as they move forward but also is a vehicle for local businesses to let the young people know first hand what skills they are looking for to grow their business.

A local business with local employees - a perfect match! Cllr Monks said “we are delighted to host this event. It is important that our young people have every opportunity and that our community can provide this and help the young people into their future!

I would like to introduce two new members of the team here at Hadleigh Safer Neighbourhood Team.

PC 1293 Niall Johnson has been a Police Officer for 15 years. He previously worked on Response at both Sudbury and Haverhill as well as a short time in the Custody Suite at Bury. This new role at Hadleigh is his first on an SNT. Niall has been out and about around our town for many weeks, interacting with youths in the various parks as well as getting out and about in our other 49 villages, meeting residents and discussing any issues that they raise. When I asked Niall to speak to me about his role he said “ he is looking forward to having more interaction with the community, he feels the continuity and ownership of long term problems is something that he is looking forward to tackling. He feels he can really make a difference.

PC 1397 Dave Wright has just been appointed in a new role by Suffolk Police – Community Engagement Officer (CEO). He has been a Police Officer for 12 years having spent all that time on a response team based in Ipswich. He will work alongside existing Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT) tackling locality based crime, anti-social behaviour and problem solving key local issues. He will be visible and accessible and engage within communities and will work with partner agencies and the voluntary sector.

He will also highlight and promote public events, support crime prevention initiatives and ensure timely information is provided to the public using various forms of digital media such as Twitter and Facebook. PC Wright will be using the Hadleigh SNT account to post updates, but also has his own facebook page “Ipswich West & Hadleigh Police”. July saw the start of OPERATION PARKLAND, the Constabulary’s initiative in South Suffolk to tackle anti-social behaviour and associated criminality in the summer months. Officers from Hadleigh SNT, along with those from Ipswich West, East and Central SNT’s are all working together to target the hot spot areas that were identified, these hot spots are being patrolled regularly by officers on both foot and in vehicles.

Hadleigh Walkers Our July walk at Bures of over 10 miles was attended by 11 who braved the temperatures of around 30 C. The Dragon walk is really a delightful one and we will run it again during cooler weather! Our August walk on Saturday 11th will again be a circular walk from Hadleigh and will follow a route via Holbecks, Doles Farm, Bower House Tye, Wicker Street Green, William’s Green, Kersey Vale and the Monks Path back to Hadleigh. The walk distance is about 8 miles in total. Anyone who wants can divert at Kersey Vale to the Kersey Bell for a refreshment while the rest of us continue back to Hadleigh. As usual, we will meet as St Mary’s School car park at 0930 and we should be back in Hadleigh around 1300. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Looking forward to September, we will run 2 walks, the second of which will be on Saturday 29th and will be a circular walk round Mersea Island. We have booked the Hadleigh community bus for this trip and will be limited to 14 or 16. Cost of the walk will depend on exact numbers but is unlikely to be more than £8 per head. The walk is around 13 miles and anyone wishing to go should contact me, Gerie or Hugh and pay a non-returnable deposit of £5 to secure their place. We are still working on the route for our regular September walk on the 8th.

Hadleigh and District Angling Society Brendon Oakes Trust Fund Open Match The club has been actively involved, for a number of years now, raising monies for the Brendon Oakes Trust Fund. We are proud to announce that we are again hosting an annual Open fishing match to raise funds for this worthy cause. Planets Mars is very bright at magnitude -2.3 in the southern sky. Jupiter is at magnitude -1.9 and still easily seen after Sunset. Saturn is well placed also at magnitude 0.3 and with binoculars appears as a stretched-out star.

The Perseids It's that time of year again!

Between July 17th and August 24th the Earth encounters the debris stream of comet SwiftTuttle and our best annual meteor shower can be seen. At their peak on the night/morning of August 12/13 between 80 and 100 meteors can be seen each hour.

The meteors travel at 37 miles a second and appear to come fron a single point within the constellation of Perseus, hence their name. The attached image demonstrates that you can draw the trails back to a single point easily.

They burn up safely at an altitude of 40-60 miles above our heads. Catholics call the phenomenon The Tears Of St Lawrence. The Saint was roasted to death over hot coals in 258 AD for giving the Church's treasures to the poor and it is said the shooting stars are the sparks from that fire falling back to Earth. In other cultures, shooting stars have also been thought to be fallen Angels, the tears of Angels, souls on the way to the afterlife, or omens of good luck, bad luck, sickness or death. The meteors are the left-over dust expelled from comet Swift-Tuttle at its last close approach to the Sun in 1992. The comet has an orbital period of 133 years, so it won't be back until the 22nd century. Most of the pieces are no bigger than a grain of sand and none ever reach the ground.

No equipment is needed, just the naked eye and with the Moon out of the way this year, a good display is anticipated.

News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) What a year! Squirrels have enjoyed learning about a huge amount this year and this half term has been no different. They have enjoyed learning all about dinosaurs and have been carefully looking after our own dinosaur nest! We also celebrated our class assembly and music concert which was great fun. Well done Squirrels for a fantastic year and enjoy your Summer!

Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) This half term we have been learning about Oceans and Seas. Hedgehogs have extended their learning through our Forest School sessions at Bridges farm. The children have enjoyed looking for treasure, making pirate ships and making pirate traps in the woods.

On Wednesday we also enjoyed a pirate themed day where the children dressed up as pirates and took part in a number of related activities including making treasure maps. It was lovely to share our learning with our parents during the afternoon.

Badgers (Years 3 and 4) Badgers have been working hard on learning all of the songs for this years performance of The Lion King. We are very excited to be performing this along with Owls class at the end of the year. In DT we have almost finished our spinning toys, for this we have had to use: saws, drills and be precise with our measurements. In Literacy we have been writing our own adventure stories, these range from those based around magic to a murder on The Orient Express! As a class we really enjoyed Sports Week, especially the circus skills session where we used hula hoops, diabolos and even a unicycle!

Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class have been busy rehearsing their production of The Lion King with Badgers class. Once they returned from their fantastic residential at African Adventure, it was all hands to the deck to practise! They are all very much looking forward to performing this week and sharing their play with their audiences. This week, we also say goodbye to our Year 6s, who this year are all heading up to Hadleigh High. We wish them the best of luck!

Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson (Hadleigh North Ward) Introduction – It seems Hadleigh is now full steam ahead for our development plans. The combination of Brett Works, Corks Lane and Angel Court, Hadleigh will be given a good balance of private and affordable housing in the next 2 years.

Angel Court - This month Iceni and Babergh gave a joint presentation on the new development design at the Guildhall, turnout was rather low due to the event being organised on a World Cup match evening! After 3 years silence (and large green boards) and an internal personal struggle to bring this project to fruition, I have confirmation that the planned development for 21 affordable (1 and 2 bedroom) homes will commence Spring 2019. At the “drop in” presentation on Wednesday 11th July 18 at the Guildhall I made it very clear there is no reason why affordable housing should not have good design.

Following extensive discussions with the architects, the windows will be changed from white to graphite in colour, the roof will be grey rather than clay to fit in with surrounding buildings and I have insisted all trees remain at the front of the site, the green environment being important to quality of life for the occupiers.

McCartney & Stone Development – The development is now well on its way and the entrance has been made ready for building to commence. Martin Farley is very approachable and is going to lengths to ensure that there is minimal disruption to the local community. I understand in the short term there have been issues whilst laying the paving at the entrance. However, we must try and bear with this, whilst in the short terms it may have effected business adversely because of the parking problems, longer term with the increase numbers business I trust business will benefit.

Private Sector Housing - On 11th July 18, Babergh DC informed the world that we now have a 6.7-year land supply. Excellent news that should (repeat should) allow the Planning Committee to be much more selective when considering applications.

Disposal of Corks Lane Buildings - This plan has now been approved by the Cabinet and is expected to go to the Full Planning Committee in September 2018. It will be for 58 private flats (1,2 and 3 bedrooms) and houses (3 – 4 bedrooms).

Public Access - There will be a support facility of some sort put in Hadleigh, however the recommendation by Cllr Grandon that an unmanned laptop will suffice. I believe does not serve or provide an efficient service and particularly for those unfamiliar with IT who wish to use this facility.

Boundary Commission - I have spoken daily with the Commission and I believe Hadleigh North will now be retained. I have put forward a forceful argument for maintaining the existing Ward. Many painstaking hours have been spent drawing out the new boundary perimeter lines and we will reduce to 1 Councillor for North 2 for South. The Boundary Commission will submit their final recommendations next month for implementation at the next local elections in May 2019. I have completed the Conservative Central Office interview/selection procedure to approve candidates for the District Council elections in 2019 and expect to be adopted as the Conservative candidate for the Ward.

Parking Charges - You may have seen reference to a common car parking policy for Babergh/MS. I have made it clear that, at the moment, I will not support the introduction of car parking charges in Babergh DC. Allowances – It has been agreed there will be an increase of £1000 for Councillor allowances and £6000 for Cabinet Members. I believe this is justified from next May onwards as a lot of work is involved, but only when we have a reduction in the number of Councillors to substantiate this increase.

However, I consider this an error of judgement backdating this to April 2018 and applaud Conservative Cllr Barrett who has given his allowance to St Peter’s Church in Sudbury, who will also gain the benefits of Gift Aid. I trust our two Hadleigh Cabinet Members will consider following this fine example of community spirit.

Sudbury Plan - After 3 years debate a new Sudbury Plan has been agreed and a newly appointed Independent Conservative Cabinet member will take it forward. I am hoping that something similar will be produced for Hadleigh where we still have significant issues to resolve.

Hadleigh Market Bench – Finally, whilst this will not be a popular decision, I have temporarily requested the suspension of the bench to be inserted in the market square. I am willing to accept criticism; however, I am keen to see a bench that is quality and suitable for all the community and visitors. The bench was chosen by the Steering Group; however, the choice is very municipal, perfect for skateboarders, impractical and not in keeping with the site. In addition, whilst it was felt flowers should be put in the centre, Environment have advised this would be very detrimental as it cannot be maintained, one only has to look at the bed surrounding the tree now. It has been agreed we will submit three designs for final consideration.

A covered gas or charcoal fired BBQ with a temperature gauge; b. a purpose made hot/cold smoker; or c. if using either of the above a stainless container for wood chips; or d. a Snowbee or similar hot smoker and sheltered heat source 2. Other: if using salmon, you will need fish pliers to extract the pin-bones; a fine example comes from the German master cutler WĂźsthof; www.wuesthof.com, just search â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Fishbone pliers - 5880â&#x20AC;&#x2122; you can get fish tweezers for a lot less money, but they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hold onto bones like the real thing, and you will need fingers that grip like a vice; alternatively, you can find a real fishmonger who will do it for you.

Ingredients A 2lb side of salmon / 4 x Gutted whole trout 10 oz Soft brown sugar, 10 oz Sea salt, 5 Bay leaves crumbled 1 level teaspoon Black pepper, 0.5 level teaspoon Allspice 0.5 level teaspoon Ginger, 0.5 level teaspoon Garlic granules Oak or ash (hickory) wood chips (qty depends upon your smoke generator) 1. You will need to plan ahead because of the time taken to cure the fish; once cured it will cook in 20-30 minutes depending upon the thickness.

2. If using salmon, locate the pin-bones by feel; run a fingertip from the tail end towards the shoulder; they come in lengthwise rows where there is a change in the muscle structure; a slight push towards the shoulder will expose the tip; grip tightly with your plier parallel to the bone and they should come out whole.

3. If using trout remove the heads if your fishmonger hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t done it for you.

4. Find a flat-bottomed glass or ceramic container about the right size to hold your fish without stacking.

5. Prepare a dry cure by thoroughly mixing the sugar, salt, pepper, allspice, ginger, garlic & bay leaves; apply this liberally to both sides of the fish & rub in; donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry if there is surplus cure; it has other uses and will keep in an airtight jar for several weeks.

6. Place the fish in your container, cover with cling film & cure in the fridge overnight.

7. Remove the fish from the container, wash & pat dry; place on a wire rack in the fridge to air dry for 6-8 hours; a glaze will form; this is perfectly normal and the glaze is known as a pellicle; this is the indicator that the fish has becomes sufficiently porous for the smoke to penetrate.

8. If using a BBQ or smoker, pre-heat to 150ÂşC 9. Load the relevant container with dry wood chips & place in direct contact with the heat source.

10. Place the fish on a wire rack (donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hang fish for hot smoking â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it will fall off the hooks as it cooks) & cook at 150-180ÂşC for 20-30 minutes, checking at 5 minute intervals from 15 minutes onwards.

11. If using trout remove the skin & fillet the fish before serving.

To serve Can be served hot or cold; best accompanied with new potatoes; peas & sweetcorn or mixed stir-fried veg if served hot; otherwise salad.

Serves 4-6 as a main course. Not suitable for freezing but will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Swimming at Birch Farm Puddle Ducks and AquaTeach will be teaching at Birch Farm from September!

We are very excited to announce that from September swimming lessons will be available at the newly refurbished pool at Birch Farm. The pool area and changing rooms are undergoing a makeover along with state of the art dosing and heating equipment being installed.

The pool will be kept at a toasty 32 degrees and makes the perfect swimming environment for your children. Below are details for the two swim schools that will be running lessons there. The term starts w/c 10th September but booking is available now to secure your place.

Lessons will take place 7 days a week and are available for pre-school children day time and after school slots every day. There will also be lessons run across both Saturdays and Sundays.

AquaTeach Swim School AquaTeach Swim School was founded 10 years ago and to date, have taught 1000's of young children to swim. They currently use 5 pools in the area and are excited to be starting lessons at Birch Farm every weekday and Saturday morning. They have a great team of experienced teachers, many of whom are ex-competitive swimmers competing up to National Level.

Their lessons focus on teaching the correct technique from the earliest of ages "We believe that a child who learns to swim with technique and confidence from the start will continue to flourish in lessons until they are a strong, safe and confident swimmer".

Teachers are in the water with the children until they are confident at swimming a minimum 15m on all strokes. They feel this helps accelerated learning as each child can be helped with individual support.

Key Stage 2 – Year 3 Following on from a successful Roman Day packed with Roman army formations and children feasting Roman style (including a visit from Emperor Pilkington), Year 3 have continued their learning on the topic by writing their own play script. Earlier in the term we all read “The Tunnel” by Anthony Browne as the starting point for writing adventure stories. Our play was based on this, but our children went through a tunnel into Ancient Rome. The children learnt a lot about all the different gods and myths associated with them. They also improved team work and speaking and listening skills. As well as writing the script, pupils created dances, made costumes, masks and scenery. All of the children sang two songs, with some solos and duets.

Year 3 also had the opportunity to go up to the school campsite and thoroughly enjoyed participating in a variety of Forest School activities.

Year 6 It has been a busy time for Year 6. Immediately after our SATs, we enjoyed an amazing trip to Duxford Imperial War Museum to introduce our Battle of Britain topic. After several weeks of learning about this important time in British history, the children celebrated their achievements with an exhibition of their work. At HCPS, it is traditional for the pupils to write and produce their own production; this year it was Beauty and the Beast, which they performed with great aplomb.

Following their play, the much-anticipated annual camp, at the end of June, was made even more special due to the glorious weather - the children (and adults) particularly embraced the water games. On Saturday 14th July, the summer fayre was exceptionally well attended and the children successfully organised a range of money-making stalls to raise funds for the HSA. This was a culmination of their enterprise project within which they have learnt about profit, promotion, team-work and responsibility. We finished the term with a visit to Raydon Airfield to understand how our local area was utilised during the war years, in comparison to how it is used today.

Gymnastics The Key Steps Gymnastics competition started at Westbourne Academy for KS1 and lower KS2. Both performed well earning a place in the County Final at Bury St Edmunds.

At the County Finals everyone had a great day performing to the judges, with our KS2 being placed first, qualifying them for Regional Finals.

This led to them travelling to Leighton Buzzard to the Harlequinn Gymnastic Centre to compete against the rest of the region. It was a fantastic day and we are proud to say that they were placed third in the region.

Camp In the basking sunshine of the past few weeks over 200 children in years 4, 5 and 6 spent a night under canvas at our annual school camp. The ‘Fun Bus’ arrived at the start of each camp packed with over 50 very excited children. After a tour of the site, followed by a talk covering the ‘rules and regulations’ of camp, they settled into their new homes. Activities then began with everyone taking part in the carousel of 5 different events. The afternoon offered a welcome opportunity for all to cool down by playing water games and a chance to enjoy the slide. We were fortunate to be treated to a ‘fly pass’ by some of the aircraft who were practising for the R.A.F. centenary celebrations. This was rounded off by a visit from our very own ‘queen’ who shared our evening meal with us.

We are grateful to all parents and helpers who were involved from transporting the equipment to set up camp, putting up tents, sorting out gas and then striking camp. A huge thanks also to Mr.Buckle for yet again, allowing us the use of his field and Buildbase and Chisnalls for donating hosing and connectors which enabled us to spend longer cooling off in the water.

Volunteer Drivers Required Hadleigh Community Transport provides door to door transport in and around Hadleigh using a minibus and also provides an accessible car service which takes people to hospital appointments and other local journeys. We are seeking more volunteer drivers to join our team. If you have D1 entitlement to drive a minibus and enjoy driving and meeting people and have time to spare we would love to hear from you.

Do you bully yourself?

Funny how we are horrified when we hear of people being bullied but many people do just that to themselves for all sorts of reasons... “I should’ve done this or why didn’t I do that, I wish I’d been more understanding or kinder to someone.”

So why aren’t we kinder to ourselves? If we don’t come up to our own (high) expectations of what we think we should achieve, how we should behave etc, we start ‘beating ourselves up’ as punishment. What would you do if a friend was being self-critical? You’d be reassuring & compassionate, so why don’t we treat ourselves like that? Maybe we think we don’t deserve any understanding, but why ever not? We should cut ourselves some slack & accept we make mistakes, we’re human after all. This applies to so many aspects of life, losing weight is a favourite. We tell ourselves “I should be this size” or, “I’m on a diet, why did I eat that whole packet of biscuits”... & so on. When you’re trying your best to make lifestyle changes to improve your health, or to feel happier in your own skin, this negative self-talk can be so damaging. We should learn to accept we’re doing our best and be kinder to ourselves, remembering to avoid that temptation next time. Society, peer pressure and social media all put pressure on us to succeed, be the best, but we need to remember that, if you’re trying your hardest, then you don’t have to be 100% perfect.

Hadleigh Community Choir performed two ‘ hot’ concerts on Saturday 7th July.

The title was apt with Mr Blue Sky, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Climb Every Mountain, Rhythm of Life and Africa dotted among the gentler, melodious songs like Fields of Gold, Moon River, and The Rose. The large audience in the evening loved the opening of Africa with the choir simulating a growing and crashing thunderstorm which blended in to the opening chords. Blue Moon finished the concert on a rousing, loud and energetic high.

Many of you will know that the Christmas Present Trust, including members of the choir, provide Christmas dinners for those who would otherwise be alone at Christmas. The choir invited them and their carers to hear a performance in the afternoon before the main evening concert. Several in the audience joined in the songs and one sitting near Musical Director Sarah Gallop helpfully joined in with Sarah’s conducting. It was a warm (in more ways than one!) and moving event for all involved.

Our Christmas concert is on 8 December at the United Reformed Church, and before that we perform in the Civic Service on 23 September at St Mary’s Church, the Suffolk Hate Crime Vigil on 15 October at the Cathedral in Bury St Edmonds, and for the British Legion on 10 November to commemorate the centenary of end of World War 1.

Come along and join us, or even better come and join the choir! Just turn up at a rehearsal at the URC on Thursday at 7.15pm

As this is being written, the Wimbledon grass courts are taking a final pounding, Suffolk is enjoying unbelievably hot weather with the threat of a hose pipe ban fast becoming imminent and in spite of some great sport, “football is not coming home”. Back in the garden and away from the telly, East Anglia is looking more breakfast cereal than spring greens. But it doesn’t have to be like that.

Artificial grass, once only come across in butchers’ windows and all year-round sports pitches, is now increasingly found in your neighbour’s back yard...but you may not have realised it until now! Are you wondering how come he has a lawn and you have a crispbread? Some of the benefits of artificial grass are obvious: no lawn mowing, no watering and no fuss. Your garden is always ready for entertaining or relaxing and although some maintenance is required, your outside space can be a constant and ready to use the whole year round.

Down to Earth ...with Dave The continuing dry weather is causing serious problems at the moment. We have given up on the lawn, hopefully it will recover when we eventually get some serious rainfall. The numerous pots in the garden all have saucers under them and are gathered together in groups. This makes watering a bit easier and helps to create a damper microclimate around them. The hanging baskets get a good soaking at least once a day and somtimes twice. Only a few special shrubs in the borders get any water and then only if they show signs of stress.

I shall try to keep my beloved hostas alive but they are not liking this very hot dry weather. If we lose anything, as we surely will, then a trip to Beth Chatto's dry garden for some ideas on drought tolerant plants may well be needed.

On the allotment it is difficult to keep everything growing as the only watering allowed is with a watering can from one of the numerous water butts. This is mainly done of an evening when the temperature has dropped a bit.

Surprisingly the two rows of dahlias are producing masses of flowers, with a large bunch being picked for indoors at least once a week. Even digging up the potatoes is hard work as the ground is so dry and hard. One job that needed doing was to thin out the bumper crop of apples, reducing the clumps of small apples to just one fruit. This will give bigger apples later on and will stop any possible damage caused by overloaded branches breaking as the fruits get bigger.

For many years one of my favourite plants for ease of growing and a bright splash of colour was the busy lizzie, but in 2011 a killer fungal disease, downy mildew, struck them down. With no known treatment all the major suppliers removed and destroyed their entire stocks, now disease proof plants have been bred and are on sale at various outlets. A bit late for this year but we shall certainly be looking to order some for next year, they are a bit gaudy but I think they will have survived this recent hot dry weather quite well.

On my wish list for the autumn is a visit to the temperate greenhouse at Kew Gardens in London. This has recently been reopened by Sir David Attenborough after a five year restoration project costing a staggering forty one million pounds. This is the largest Victorian glasshouse in the world and is a Grade One listed building. During the restoration fifteen thousand panes of glass were replaced, around five hundred plants were taken out and housed in a temporary nursery, with an incredible ten thousand going back in.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday July 9th 2018: This is a great year for anniversaries - RAF a hundred years, NHS seventy years, and not to be outdone, Hadleigh and District Garden Club fifty years! Originally "Hadleigh and District Horticultural Society", January 1968 saw the formation of the club. So this year it is our golden anniversary and to celebrate this milestone over forty members and friends came together last month for a 'golden garden party'. Everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet and a glass (or two!) of wine, and a special birthday cake provided by Carole our treasurer, with Ruth, our president cutting the first slice. To commemorate the event a rose was presented to Sue and Neil, our hosts for the evening, by Dave our acting chairman, and the plan was for it to be planted during the evening. However the recent dry weather meant that this ceremony will have to be held over until the autumn when we hopefully will have had some rain. The photo shows Sue, Neil and Dave and Max the dog who is very keen to help with the digging! So a good time was had by all and, with our membership continuing to increase, we hope the club will be set fair for the next fifty years.

Our next get together on Monday August 13th 2018: This month we welcome Neil Bradfield from Suffolk Plant Heritage as our guest speaker. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall and is £3 for non members and £1 for members, to include refreshments. The competition for this month is ' three tomatoes on a plate'. We are always happy to welcome new members and we look forward to seeing you there.

Do you recall I wrote about our ex-battery hen’s regular tour of inspection recently?

I swear Gertie thinks she should eat at the table with the rest of us! The other day I caught the cheeky chicken on the kitchen chair, cranning her neck to see if dinner was ready. There’s more! Later that day William the cockerel came strutting into the kitchen. Anyone would think this was an animal sanctuary!

There was much reminiscing about England’s football success in 1966 and the heat wave of 1976 last month. Very interesting providing we dogs don’t have to wait on a hot pavement during the conversation. Even my Mexican roots don’t protect my little pads in that weather! Despite the heat, the Melford Street Fair was a good day for all concerned. Let’s hope some volunteers come forward to continue this great annual event.

We have been invited to the Beth Chatto Gardens Wildlife Fair, Elmstead Market CO7 7DB. This is a beautiful venue for two days of fun family events on 22nd and 23rd August. September is busy starting with a stall at the Wickham St. Paul Dog Show, CO9 2PT at 1pm on the 8th. Our garden is also lovely thanks to our helpers putting in hours of hard work and I’m off to smell the flowers. Maybe they will name a rose after me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

The first new music festival combined acts new to Hadleigh along with the town's most popular groups. It kicked off with busking alongside the Friday Market, led by Felix Simpson, guitar player and songwriter from Diss. Felix alternated his modern hits with a set by Hadleigh's own musicians The Meddlers an offshoot of Old Spice ranges from youngster to veterans.

The evening main event was Sally Ironmonger at Hadleigh Folk & Acoustic Music Club, staged at the Ansell Centre. Sally claused a lot of laughter with her tales of cheeky life down by the docks of Chatham.

On Saturday newly formed dance group Boudicca Border Morris got their sticks knocking in a modern take on the classic morris tradition, first performing in the marketplace then moving on to the King's Head.

The United Reformed Church was the venue for the summer concert Rhythm of Life, by Hadleigh Community Choir. Nature inspired songs raised funds for the Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

The finale event was a sell out concert by The Three Chordettes. The trio of Lisa Sarah and Molly performed vintage jazz and swing at the Old School Bridge Street. Formerly the venue for the East Anglian Summer Music Festival series, the historic space was kindly hosted by Miranda McIntosh. A collection was held towards the appeal for large outdoor musical instruments, to be sited at St Mary's Primary School.

Beaumont Children above National We are thrilled to report our KS2 SATs results for 2018. Our school is above national with 75% of KS2 children at expected or above in Reading, Writing and Maths!

Running for Joy - Our children have been enjoying their new running track this term which is helping them to achieve their daily mile. The initiative has been running a little while now and encourages children to run, jog or walk every day at their own pace. Making children fitter, healthier and more able to concentrate in the classroom.

This local history magazine covers the villages through which the River Brett flows for fifteen miles in south Suffolk.

Of great service to small communities all over the country are sub-post offices, often accommodated within the homes of post masters and post mistresses. As part of the Rural Post Revision of the 1850s, Semer’s first post office was opened in a house on the edge of the Common, a rather isolated position away from the rest of the population but convenient for the delivery and collection of mail bags as it lay at the top of Cook’s Hill on the main road from Hadleigh to Bildeston. Short biographies are included of the seven individuals who ran Semer Post Office at four different locations, which are all illustrated.

The Brett Valley once had at least one mill in each parish, either driven by wind or by water. In Layham, the history of the present watermill is known but what about the three others that have been identified. In ‘Layham’s Lost Mills’, ownership of the mills and stories of their millers are told. They include a watermill that was used for fulling cloth, a smock windmill that was destroyed in a gale and a brick-built tower windmill, the site of which is now marked by a house called Windy Ridge.

After Margaret Bloomfield died in 1979, her home at Wattisham Hall was appraised for probate when the contents were listed and valued under room headings so we can see how the lady of the manor lived nearly 340 years ago. ‘Appraising Wattisham Hall’ includes a transcript of the inventory and also looks at her will, in which she outlined her funeral arrangements and distributed her largess not only to her children but also to poor women of the neighbourhood.

Tony Woodgate of Monks Eleigh is thanked for the loan of family photographs showing haymaking in Chelsworth just before the Great War. Another feature pictures summer fetes at Bildeston, Brettenham, Milden and Monks Eleigh early in the 20th century, while church spires at Aldham, Bildeston, Monks Eleigh and Hadleigh are investigated. Thorpe Morieux appears in the village sign report and hidden treasures at Cockfield and Lavenham are revealed.

The summer term has been very busy at St Mary’s C of E Primary School – there has been no time to recover from our 50th birthday celebrations in the spring term! We hope everyone has a restful, fun summer break. See you in September!

Leavers Many thanks to Reverend Sue Foster for hosting our annual Leavers’ Service at St Mary’s Church. This was an opportunity to celebrate the Year 6 children’s time with us, sharing special memories and giving thanks, before they embark on the next stage of their educational journey at secondary school. The children reflected on the things they have enjoyed over the years and on which of the school’s Christian values were most important to them. It is amazing how quickly these years at primary school have flown by!

Reverend Sue gave a talk about how we respond to challenges and some volunteers took part in a ‘We’re Year 6s, Get Us Out of Here’ bush-tucker challenge! The Year 6 leavers have also enjoyed a pizza party with a rounders match against their parents and space-hopper races! On the final day of term, we said a final farewell in our leavers’ assembly. We wish all of our leavers lots of luck for their time in secondary school and their future lives beyond school.

Sports Day Sports Day was won, once again, by the sporting stars in the Blue team. The event was a great celebration of sporting talent and perseverance. Children took part in a range of competitive track events and field events, such as the javelin and standing long-jump. It was lovely to see so many parents and friends in attendance, cheering the children on and giving them lots of encouragement. We were very lucky with the beautiful weather! We have never had so many mummies and daddies join in the parents’ races! Many thanks to everyone who shared the fun with us!

Summer Fete This year’s Summer Fete was another wonderful social occasion. The children enjoyed so many fun activities, including the bouncy castles, penalty shootout, donkey rides, netball games and a variety of stalls. We are very grateful to ‘Less Than Perfect’ and Mr Betts and his students from Hadleigh High School, who provided live music for us to enjoy while eating our burgers! Thank you so much to all the local businesses that contributed valuable vouchers and gifts – their contributions were extremely generous. As always, we are enormously grateful to the members of the school community who give up their time to organise and run such a successful event. We raised nearly £2,000 for the school!

Early Years Trip to Rendlesham Forest In the Early Years, children enjoyed sharing the book ‘Stickman’. This was linked to a trip to Rendlesham Forest, which included a forest treasure hunt, minibeast hunting and forest art. Also, the children were inspired to make ‘Stickmen’ and rainbow cards, using natural objects. The children get such a lot from being outside, learning and being creative while surrounded by nature! Thank you to all the adults who helped on the trip and made it into a fun day out!

Oak Class Trip to Hedingham Castle and Banquet The children in Oak Class enjoyed their trip to Hedingham castle and learned lots about life inside a castle with the re-enactment and drama from ‘Hands on the Past’. They learned about how to attack a castle, how to train to be a knight, music and dancing in the castle and about medicines that they used, including slug slime to help sore eyes! Thank you to all the parents who helped out on the day.

Oak Class finished their Castles topic by thinking about the banquets in the great hall. The children organised their own banquet – they made medieval gingerbread and drank from goblets that they had made. They played a welcoming tune on the Ocarinas and, mid-way through the feast, they performed a medieval dance they had been practising. At the end of the feast, jesters and entertainers told jokes and then the children had a jousting tournament! The children have loved learning about castles and this was a fabulous celebration of all their hard work.

Sharing Café This term we have welcomed parents in to school for two ‘sharing cafés’. The whole school was involved on both occasions, with classrooms open from the Early Years through to Year 6. It was lovely to see so many parents in school, enjoying practical, hands-on activities with their children. The first café had a science theme and, later in the term, we held a creative maths afternoon. Our ‘sharing cafés’ are great opportunities to get parents involved and to show that we value the children’s learning in partnership. They are also great fun! Thanks to everyone who took the time to visit us and to those who helped out with refreshments.

Beech Class and Rowan Class Trip to Suffolk Farm Fair Years 3 and 4 joined together to visit the Suffolk County Farm Fair where they saw lots of farmers and their equipment. The children sampled lots of different types of food, including gorgeous local sausages and snacks made from peas! The highlights of the day were meeting lots of lovely animals and seeing eggs hatching. The children hitched a ride in a tractor trailer and watched a helicopter take off. All-round, it was a wonderful day, full of fun and interesting information.

Chestnut Class – clarinet lessons and performance Throughout the year, the Year 5s have been learning to play the clarinet as a whole class. Mr Rowe, from the County Music Service, has done a marvellous job of helping the children to master this difficult instrument. Recently, the children attended a celebration with several schools at the United Reform Church in Hadleigh. All the schools present had participated in the ‘whole class ensemble tuition’ scheme and there was a lot of talent on show! The children from St Mary’s performed admirably in front of an audience of parents as well as other children.

Junior Road Safety Officers Earlier in the year, four of our children were selected to be Junior Road Safety Officers. Throughout the year, they have organised various activities to promote road safety, including leading an assembly, teaching the younger children and organising competitions. The boys created a scrapbook in which they recorded all their hard work. In the summer term, the Junior Road Safety Officers had the opportunity to go to Endeavour House to attend a conference and celebrate their good work. Well done to all our JRSOs, who have shown real commitment and dedication.

Willow Class Fundraiser for New Hope Children’s Centre in Kenya Willow Class decided to take positive action to raise money to help the children at the New Hope Children’s centre in Kenya. They were very enterprising and organised a fundraising event after school, with lots of stalls and games to play. Our friends in Kenya wanted to take a school trip to Nairobi and they were finally able to arrange it thanks to the money raised by Willow Class. We have seen photos from the trip and they clearly had a great time!

Willow Class Trip to London The trip to London has been a real highlight for Willow Class. For many of the children this was their first visit to the capital and they were amazed by all the sights and sounds, especially the large buildings. They enjoyed a walk along the Thames, spotting famous buildings.

The children were particularly excited by the hands-on, practical exhibits and experiments at the Science Museum. It was a long, unforgettable day! The children have followed up their trip by learning about other capital cities and by developing their own graffiti-style art.

Key Stage 2 production All the children involved in the marvellous Robin Hood production should be very proud of themselves.

The children had a huge amount to learn in a short space of time; their dedication and commitment was fantastic. The whole show looked fantastic under our brand new stage lights! The audiences were very appreciative and we would like to thank everyone for their kind comments.

Collective Worship The children have had a range of experiences in Collective Worship and assemblies this term. We are very grateful to all the visitors who have led Worship for us, including Brian Hempstead, Reverend Sue Foster, Reverend Bryn Rickards, Reverend Joyce Willis Pastor Chris Todd, Philip Mann and Reverend David and Wendy Atkins. This term, our Worship has been focused on the values of ‘service’ and ‘truthfulness’. The children have also benefited from a variety of informative assemblies.

Finally, we’d like to thank the team from One Life Suffolk for attending our summer fete, sports day and assemblies, as well as teaching sequences of lessons to different classes. The children are developing a good knowledge of healthy lifestyles.

HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 21st June 2018 Present: Councillors: Matthews (Town Mayor), Angland, Byrne, Fraser, Haines, Haylock, Monks, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. In attendance: Suffolk County Councillor Fraser, Babergh District Councillor Grandon and 22 members of the public. The Mayor reported that the Guildroom was being used for the meeting whilst it was verified whether it was legal to hold a meeting in licenced premises which may rule out the Dining Room and the Guildhall was the only other room with wheelchair access. Everyone was in favour of holding the meeting in this room.

APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors: Cook, Sheldrick and Free. These apologies were accepted.

DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Councillor Fraser declared a non-pecuniary interest in the Suffolk Remembers – Armistice 100 item – as he is a member of the Royal British Legion.

MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 17th May 2018 were taken as read and confirmed and signed.

MATTERS ARISING Councillor Shearly-Sanders objected to the staff statement that had been read out as he did not feel he, and two other residents, should have been named. It was pointed out by the Mayor that this statement had been made in response to him and the two residents naming themselves in press releases and on social media. Therefore this information had been put in the public domain by those persons.

Town Council Agenda Councillor Wiltshire asked why this item had changed from a discussion to a vote being taken? She was advised that no vote had been taken but an agreement that the public adjournment would be removed for a trial period of three months. This would then be reviewed by the Finance & Personnel Committee at the meeting in August. Councillor Wiltshire asked who had provided the advice that the public adjournment was removed and was advised that this had come from Babergh District Council’s Monitoring Officer following her attendance at at a Town Council Meeting. Councillor Wiltshire requested to see this advice in writing but was advised that it was given verbally in a meeting between the Officers. Councillor Shearly-Sanders questioned why there were no published notes from this meeting and was advised that this had been a general update provided following the Monitoring Officer’s visit to a Hadleigh Town Council meeting and to receive her recommendations on how best to manage future Town Council meetings. The Clerk agreed to contact the Monitoring Officer and request confirmation that she did indeed make this recommendation which is in-line with Babergh District Council’s meetings and public participation.

Annual Town Meeting It was felt by Councillor Shearly-Sanders that he considered it was unacceptable that the Minutes of the Annual Town Meeting would not be available until the next meeting. He was advised that as this was an Annual Meeting the Minutes would be provided for approval at the next meeting.

General Data Protection Regulation The Clerk updated Council on the work carried out by Councillor Cook and the action required to ensure the security of the hard drive of the photocopier.

SUFFOLK REMEMBERS – ARMISTICE 100 Mr. Mark Brennan from the Royal British Legion, was invited to update Council on arrangements and events that would be taking place within the town from August up to Remembrance Day. Following the presentation the Mayor stated that Hadleigh Town Council fully supported the Royal British Legion and the events planned. The Town Council were meeting the cost of the Town Hall for the Festival of Remembrance and would be providing the replacement trees at the War Memorial.

POLICE A written report had been provided by the Police advising how they were dealing with increased anti-social behaviour in the town.

REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Written reports had been received from Suffolk County Councillor Fraser; Babergh District Councillors Dr Dawson and Grandon. Babergh District Councillors Campbell and Dr. Dawson had tendered their apologies.

Councillor Fraser answered questions on what happens to disabled bays outside residents when they are not required any more. He was advised that Hadleigh Town Council had contributed to the consultation on the School and Post 16 Travel which resulted in Option 3 being implemented. At the Cabinet Meeting there was a large turnout from members of the public concerned over this issue.

He updated Council on the Solar Together Suffolk Scheme.

Councillor Grandon confirmed that Babergh District Council also request members of the public to submit written questions before a meeting as this is an accepted procedure.

Councillor Grandon answered questions on the proposal that Hadleigh Town Council be offered the flag pole from outside the Corks Lane Offices. This has been commissioned and paid for by members who felt that if a suitable site could be found should remain in the town. It was agreed that this offer be discussed at the next Environment & General Purpose Committee. She was asked if Babergh District Council would be carrying out the Corks Lane development themselves and advised that a decision should be made in the next few weeks.

The proposed access points would be unmanned due to financial issues but Babergh District Councillors had just received a 25% increase in their allowance.

She pointed out that this equated to less than 30p per hour and Babergh’s Councillors were among the lowest remunerated Councillors in the Country.

It was pointed out to Councillor Grandon that Hadleigh Town Council had been fighting for many years against the introduction of parking charges in the town and would continue to do so.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor reported that three Freedom of Information requests had been received and all dealt with. A request was made as to whether these requests and responses could be available on the website.

It was felt that this could only be done if permission was received from the resident making the request.

The Mayor reported a letter received from the Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club advising that the annual Hadleigh 10 and 5 mile race would be taking place on Sunday 18th November starting at 11am. They anticipate in the region of 500 participants. There will be a 2km junior fun run starting at 10.15am.

QUESTIONS RAISED BY MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC The following question was read out: “From research carried out by Hadleigh Together and also concerns raised by some town councillors there appears to be many so far unanswered concerns relating to the cemetery extension project, in particular on the following issues: financial viability, value for money, insurance situation, health & safety and accessibility, and that the correct decision making procedures have been followed. Will the Town Council (in the interests of openness and transparency) put information on their website relating to the cemetery project and all of the mentioned concerns so that the public are made aware of the project and can review and scrutinise the project information prior to a final decision being made on committing such a large sum of money?” The Mayor said yes – the request will be considered when the webpage is being worked on.

STANDING ORDER NO. 40 Councillor Wiltshire did not ask a question but requested the Mayor provide an answer to the e.mail she had sent him raising questions over poll cards. She wanted to know specifically who had taken and when was the decision not to issue poll cards taken. Councillor Angland advised that the decision had been taken by the Finance & Personnel Committee not to spend an additional £2,942.40 of public money. This reduced the expenditure for the election from £7,227.90 to £4,285.50. This decision had been minuted and presented to full Council for approval.

Regarding the election in August the Clerk advised that should an election be called then Babergh District Council would provide the costings for that election and a decision would be taken whether Hadleigh Town Council wished to pay for polling cards again. It would depend upon the timescale as to how this decision would be taken.

ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £34,800.98 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salarie be approved for payment.

Questions were asked on the payments made for Foam Boards; Bullards and Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. One Councillor felt the payment to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity to be unlawful. When a member of the public asked if an unlawful payment had been authorised they were advised that this payment was not unlawful.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders made a proposal that the payment to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity be considered as a separate item. This was seconded.

Voting was unanimous.

Councillor Shearly-Sanders proposed that the payment to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity should not be made as he considered this to be unlawful. He went on to read out legal documentation which the Clerk asked him to provide in order that the Minutes were accurate. To date this information has not been received. This proposal was not seconded so the proposal falls.

The Clerk was asked if any information had been received regarding the tree works by Sun Court. The Clerk advised that Babergh District Council had confirmed that this work was included in the original planning application.

SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 17th May 2018 was received and accepted.

FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 7th June 2018 was received and accepted including the recommendation to provide a grant of £500 towards the Hadleigh Music Festival.

The Clerk provided more information on the Microphone System and Hearing Loop. The Clerk was asked to obtain more quotations for a system and hearing loop in other rooms; to find out if meetings could be held in the Dining Room as it is licensed premises or whether the Council had to move back to the Council Chamber. It was acknowledged by everyone attending the meeting that the Guildroom was not suitable for future meetings.

ENVIRONMENT & GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE The Reports of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 17th May 2018 and 7th June 2018 were received and accepted. The Clerk was asked if any information had been received regarding Babergh District Council’s promise to replace the seat in the Market Place. The Clerk advised that to date there had been no response to the e.mail sent. Councillor Grandon did advise that it was hoped the seat would be in place by the end of July.

FINAL ACCOUNTS The Final Accounts were tabled at the meeting. The Clerk advised that the review of the effectiveness of the system of internal control had been approved in February 2018. A request was made for a recorded vote which was approved.

Internal Auditors Report. This was recommended for approval. Voting was: 6 for Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Fraser, Haines, Haylock and Monks, 2 abstentions. Councillors: Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire.

The Annual Governance Statement. This was recommended for approval. It was noted that all questions received a yes answer except no. 4 and the no response would be supported by a letter of explanation. Voting was: 6 for Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Fraser, Haines, Haylock and Monks, 2 abstentions Councillors: Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire The Accounting Statements This was recommended for approval, Voting was: 6 for Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Fraser, Haines, Haylock and Monks, 2 abstentions, Councillors: Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire.

It was noted that with the Council having no Responsible Financial Officer, the external Auditors bringing forward the submission date a lot of additional work had fallen onto the staff and certain Councillors to finalise this work in time to meet the deadline of the 25th June 2018. A big thank you was expressed for the help and support provided by the Internal Auditor.

The Internal Auditor has suggested to the Mayor that the Town Council fees be reviewed annual, rather than bi-annually. It must be noted when holiday periods affect the pre-payment of rates as they had fallen previously over the Easter holiday period.

REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Fraser reported that on the 15th May he had attended an Army Brigade briefing at Suffolk Showground which provided information on what the army were doing at the moment On the 19th June Councillor Fraser, in his capacity as Suffolk County Councillor, attended a SALC meeting which was attended by other parishes and covered planning aspects, engaging with the public and developers. The Clerk was asked to contact Tom Barker from Babergh District Council and invite him to attend a future Planning Meeting. Councillor Byrne was disappointed in that she had arranged to venue for this meeting and was the Town Council’s SALC representative but had received no information on when the meeting was being held and would be contacting SALC direct.

TOWN MATTERS Councillor Monks advised that she had been working with the Porch Project regarding a careers event for the youth of Hadleigh.to take place on the 30th August in St. Mary’s Church. She asked that Hadleigh Town Council support the event and asked if the joint letter to the local businesses could be sent out on the Town Council Letterhead. This was queried by Councillor ShearlySanders but the Clerk advised that Hadleigh Town Council work with other local organisations and did not see any issue with Councillor Monks’ request.

Councillor Monks reiterated that this was for the benefit of the youth of Hadleigh and saw it as a positive approach. Voting was 7 for and 1 abstentions. Councillor Shearly-Sanders questioned the reasons for going into confidential as he felt the information regarding the cemetery should be made public. He was advised by the Mayor that Council needed to receive further information regarding the cemetery extension which included financial content and would need to be discussed in confidential session.

Voting to go into confidential took place: 6 for and 2 against.

There being no further business the meeting ended at 10.00pm.

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 27 June 2018 were: • Public Forum The parishioner present said the speed signs at the top of Mill Lane were currently obscured by plant growth when turning left towards Hadleigh.

• District Council report Following the Q&A event held in Hadleigh on 9 June, Councillor Ward said further events had been confirmed across the Babergh area. He drew attention to the ‘Stars of Babergh and Mid Suffolk’ awards and asked councillors to give some thought to possible nominations; this would be an agenda item for the July meeting. In response to a question concerning the decision to increase councillors’ allowances, he said there had been no increase for some years and Babergh was now a long way behind most other comparable authorities in the country. The government had set up a framework whereby an independent panel recommended the new amounts; councillors were not involved in setting these. Councillor Ward said prospective councillors could not afford to take time out of paid employment without adequate remuneration; the Chairman made the point that parish councillors also worked many hours each week but did not receive an allowance. In response to a further question, Councillor Ward said there had been some turnover in staff since the move to Endeavour House, mainly due to fixed term contracts ending.

• County Council report The new Cabinet member for Highways, Mary Evans, had announced a review of maintenance in Suffolk and hoped to work more closely with parish and town councils to make use of their local knowledge. In response to a question, Councillor Jones said less money was being spent now that Kier was the main contractor; this would be addressed in the review and it was hoped to develop a better working relationship between SCC and Kier. Councillors welcomed the OneLife Suffolk campaign to encourage people to support people with dementia by becoming a Dementia Friend.

• Casual vacancy There had been six applications for the casual vacancy following Doreen Sillett’s resignation. It was agreed unanimously that a small working group should talk to each candidate and produce recommendations for the council as a whole to consider, before a formal vote at the July meeting.

• Sign at the top of Water Lane Councillor Jones confirmed that he had given approval for a sign at the top of Water Lane advising that it was not suitable for HGVs. • CPR training A training session had taken place in Watermill Close in June; the Chairman asked councillors to spread the word and try to recruit other residents.

• Sign to Village Hall The Clerk had received an email confirmation from SCC Highways that the Operations Team was in the process of scheduling the work and would confirm a date in due course.

• 2017/18 Audit The recommendations in the internal audit report produced

by SALC were noted. Sections 1 (Governance Statement) and 2 (Accounting Statements) were approved and signed by the Chairman and Clerk/RFO. • Defibrillator for Brett Green Councillor Curran’s report was noted, although he had been unable to complete the costings pending further information.

Councillor Jones confirmed his offer to provide half of the outstanding amount from his budget and Councillor Laing confirmed that the Queen’s Head charity would donate £1000. The Masons had written to say the committee was unable to help with the purchase of the defibrillator itself, but had suggested a meeting to discuss the possibility of applying for a grant for associated costs from the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

• Playing Field It was agreed unanimously to go ahead with installing gates into the conservation area, as discussed at the last meeting. It was hoped to be able to access some S106 funding from Babergh. The PC was looking into the possibility of purchasing two new litter bins for the playing field.

• Suffolk Constabulary Suffolk Constabulary had emailed all parish and town clerks to see if they would be prepared to help fund a PCSO. However, it was felt that sufficient funding was already in place, and parishioners already contributed through the annual precept. Dave Wright had written to introduce himself as one of Suffolk Constabulary’s new Community Engagement Officers, working alongside the Safer Neighbourhood Teams; Dave would be covering Ipswich West and the Hadleigh area.

Layham Green Team On the evening of 26 June members of Layham Green Team undertook to clear the Himalayan Balsam from the ditch between the playing field and the mill ground. This is important work as Himalayan Balsam is a non-native invasive plant commonly found along streams and river banks. If left to own devices it spreads quickly and chokes wetland habitats – it will reach catastrophic levels if not checked.

Thank you to Rosey and Laurence Nicholls, Lesley and Peter Garnett, Tim McNelly, Elaine Pye, John Nightingale and Sheila Roberts – also to Ed and Glenda hall of Layham Mill House, who gave permission to use their land.

Rosey Nicholls has been taking photos of the insects and wild flowers in the conservation area and has identified 29 different species of plant. This data will help us to see if our work on the area results in an increase in flora and fauna over the years. Thanks to Ron Gunn for obtaining more plants for ongoing projects.

Suffolk Day 21 June was a day when the County of Suffolk was celebrated in many different ways. During that day PC Niall Johnson of the Hadleigh Safer Neigbourhood Team visited Layham and is seen here making friend with four Layham children – Kalia, Lacey, Jaden and Kayden. Good idea to take advantage of the day to visit communities.

Our Police Community Engagement Officer A new initiative places a police officer back in our rural communities. PC David Wright started his career with the police as a Special Constable and then Special Inspector for six years after which he served twelve years in an Ipswich-based Response Team. He has carried out many different roles during that time and is now charged with developing relationships across the community in and around Hadleigh. In his new role, Dave has the use of Twitter and Facebook so people can follow those if they wish. Twitter @HadleighPolice or @IpsWestPolice (Layham will be @HadleighPolice). Facebook – Ipswich West & Hadleigh Police (off of the main Suffolk Constabulary site).

Chess in the Queen’s Head Our very own Dr Ian Gooding rose to the challenge recently of taking on 8 opponents in a Chess Simultaneous competition at The Queens Head. Ian is ranked in the top 400 players in the country and plays tournaments in the U.K. and Europe. Needless to say he defeated all the challengers even the one wearing "glasses that could see 4 moves ahead". Steve, the landlord, did however get Ian in check before finally being defeated.

Money raised went to the charity fund that is used for the benefit of Layham residents. There will be another simultaneous competition in the winter months so watch this page for details.

Layham Playgroup CIO The children were all very excited when we took our butterflies to the nature area in the park. We released them into the wild, where they all flew away onto the wild flowers.

We will be revisiting the park with our families for our end of term picnic. We shall be saying some “Goodbyes” to those children and families who will be leaving us for school or nursery. We wish them well with their next steps.

We wish all our families a happy summer holiday and look forward to welcoming some of you back, along with our new children, in September. We look forward to hearing all your news.

Centenary of the end of the First World War To commemorate the ending of the First World War on the weekend of November 10th & 11th, St Andrews Church, Lower Layham, are creating a Poppy waterfall from the altar. We would also like to make a separate commemoration for any Layham residents who have family members that lost their lives in the Great War. The Church plans to put on a small display of WW1 memorabilia and would appreciate the loan of any suitable items. Dear Sir, At the time of writing it is Democracy Week. The people of Hadleigh are now all aware that there have been problems at Hadleigh Town Council, accused of not operating transparently and democratically. Only those who attend meetings will know that at the last Finance Committee meeting there was a discussion and it was decided to remove the 15 mins public speaking time from Town Council meetings for a trial period. This was not on the agenda (a requirement and with three days notice) and there was no vote on it, so it is possible it will not appear in the minutes or report published in the HCN. At the full Town Council meeting, Cllr Wiltshire questioned why it was not on the agenda and challenged the decision, supported by Cllr Shearly-Sanders, and the Mayor said it was "an administrative matter that did not need approval." He said that people can email or write in with questions and it can be dealt with in that way. Elaine Root, Mayor's secretary, said that the Monitoring Officer at Babergh had recommended it. The Monitoring Officer has no authority over the management of Hadleigh Town Council. The decision to remove public speaking time without consulting all councillors, and their belief this is acceptable, illustrates the claim that they are undemocratic.

I resigned following the vote of no confidence at the Annual Town Meeting to avoid the cost of a Parish Poll and in the hope that others would follow. I understand why some councillors are not resigning following the Parish Poll as unless all councillors resigned it would not be in the public interest.

Dear Sir, As a cyclist, I was disappointed to read Trevor Theobald’s letter in July’s HCN as it is not good when anti-social cyclists give law abiding riders a bad name and I don't condone bad language or rude gestures from any road user.

However, when I looked into Trevor’s story I was mystified about which “rules of the road” these cyclists had broken.

Now, I wasn’t present at the incident in question but it is worth making clear that the Highway Code states that cyclists may ride two abreast on the highway (although, good club cyclists will usually move into a single file formation to allow vehicles to pass from behind).

However, in this instance, Trevor states that he was driving down Gallows Hill with the cyclists approaching him coming up the hill. Because of the row of parked vehicles always present on the left side of Gallows Hill (when riding up it) so the cyclists would have had to have crossed the white line (completely legally) in order to safely pass those vehicles. Riding up the hill the cyclists would also have been riding at a slow speed so it is likely they would take some time to ride up the Gallows Hill (on the “wrong” side of the road) during that passing manoeuvre. If Trevor was trying to force his way down hill at the same time it is likely that he should really have given way and waited for the cyclists – as vulnerable road users – to pass. A little more tolerance and patience make the roads safer and more agreeable for everyone.

Re the recent referendum - with only 11% of the electorate bothering to vote the result cannot justify any action. However, I was concerned by the wording on the voting paper. This should have been a straightforward yes or no re confidence, not outlining the yes campaign's opinion of the functioning of the council. Those council members who actively campaigned for a yes vote (even putting a poster in their window) should resign from an organisation of which they are a member that they consider dysfunctional. What did this referendum cost, who footed the bill and who designed the voting form.

My thanks go to the unpaid elected councillors and the staff of Hadleigh Town Council for their hard work in the recent context of a challenging atmosphere.

I am sure there is something to be learned from this disgraceful exercise.

Dear Sir, In response to Howard Gibbons' column in last month’s HCN re. “Cyclists should keep to the left and not ride several a-breast”. I'd like to invite Mr Gibbons out on a bike ride for him to appreciate road use from a cyclist's perspective. That way he may understand a cyclist's road positioning a bit more and recognise they have to avoid drains, gravel and pot holes etc that tend to be on the left hand side of a lane and also appreciate the lack of space granted to them by Chelsea Tractors as they pass by way too closely. I appreciate he may have seen some poor behaviour, as I have, but this is not limited to cyclists and pertains to car drivers too.

I'd also like to point him towards the Highway Code's rule 66 which states “Never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends”. Even from his legal background he may notice that it is permissible to ride two abreast. Perhaps he can convey this to his chauffeur, Frank?

Dear Sir, I see that nominations are now received for the two Hadleigh Town Council vacancies. One of the nominees standing in the North Ward is listed as Kieron Ruddy. I believe this is the same gentleman who recently resigned from the Town Council and appears to now be standing again to get back a seat he voluntarily gave up! What a ridiculous state of affairs that the rules apparently allow this to happen and waste of public money to cause this election which will cost in the region of £3,000 per ward. I understand he joined the Council in March 2018, uncontested, and resigned in May 2018. If he felt unable to continue to be a Councillor in May, what has changed in order for him to seek to get his seat back in July? Is this all part of the Hadleigh Together group’s plans to create dysfunction in the Town Council and, if so, how unnecessary to play such games at the taxpayer’s expense. Stop calling all these expensive, disruptive polls and elections that only a small percentage of the 7,000+ residents seem bothered with and let the Town Council get on with their work.

Dear Sir, I have just enjoyed the most marvellous weekend of live music and entertainment, courtesy of the All Hadleigh Music Festival. The buskers in the Market Place on Friday were fantastic, the Folk Club was a delight (as ever!), The Boudicca Border Morris Dancers were great fun, and the Hadleigh Community Choir absolutely brilliant! And all this was perfectly finished off with the fabulous Three Chordettes on Sunday. What a great weekend! A massive thank you to all those who took part, and in particular to Ian Grutchfield, for organising the whole event. I look forward to doing it all again next year!

Dear Sir, When I left the Hadleigh area in 1988, to work in Geneva, it was a beautifully maintained environment. Babergh District Council enjoyed a well deserved reputation for preservation of Historic buildings, care in the community and pragmatic problem solving. I chose, based upon reputation, to return to Hadleigh in 2010. Initially the area lived up to expectation. It was a pleasure to walk my dog through parkland, along well maintained edged pathways with guard rails and down a well kept Railway Walk. Sadly, in 2018, the parkland has degenerated into weeds and nettles. Vandalism has destroyed the guard rails and the paths are overgrown. Railway Walk (a valued local amenity) is barely a ‘walk’ more a foray through a nettle bed.

I no longer proudly take my visitors through Hadleigh, along Riverside Walk or Railway Walk as I am ashamed of the area I reside in. Continued degeneration in residential developments encourages crime and vandalism. PLEASE Hadleigh Town Council and Babergh District Council give us back a Town and environment we can be proud to be part of.

Dear Sir, I am a resident in the High Street and with no rear access to our premises or dedicated parking spot I, like several others, rely on the limited available spaces on the highway. Recently, however, due to the commencement of the McCarthy and Stone development, such spaces have become increasingly rare. First, workers who arrive in town for the construction companies take most of the available spaces on a daily basis. In this regard it would be helpful to us residents as well as daily visitors for shopping purposes, if the vehicles belonging to site operatives were parked on the vacant old council car park – less than a minute’s walk from the site entrance. Second, as many as 4-6 previously available spaces have now been appropriated and cordoned off by plastic barriers, pondering the question as to whether or not the company responsible has the necessary authority in this regard. This will be an ongoing issue for the duration of the construction period when the main building works will no doubt mean the arrival of a greater number of personnel. McCarthy and Stone’s online publicity states their consideration to a ‘sense of community’. Perhaps therefore, they would like to prove this by giving more consideration to the community they are disrupting.

Dear Sir, I frequently visit London for the day which involves a train journey from Manningtree or Colchester to London, Liverpool Street and return. There is a Community Bus Service from Hadleigh to Manningtree at about 5.45am which is not particularly suitable for the day traveller! However if returning from London, Liverpool Street at about 5pm in the evening there is a Community Bus Service available from Manningtree Station leaving there at 6.35pm arriving back to Hadleigh at about 7.00pm.

This evening service is, I find, a great help. It operates on Monday to Friday evenings but not on Saturdays. As the School Summer Holidays are with us I felt as well to mention this service.

Babergh District Council’s Cabinet have voted to draw up a planning application to develop up to 58 new homes on the site of the council’s former Hadleigh offices. At a meeting of Babergh’s Cabinet on 12 July, councilors voted to draw up a planning application to develop the former office site as residential properties, while retaining the listed buildings and part of previous extensions to the offices. The application will cover the former offices at Corks Lane as well as the car park south of the Brett, including Bridge House.

The Cabinet considered a number of options for the site, as well as comments from councillors, the Town Council and the public. The decision follows public exhibitions of the plans in April.

The application will be for up to 58 homes on the site, consisting of a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and 3 and 4 bedroom houses, while retaining memorial trees, green spaces and the footpath along the Brett. Resident and visitor car parking, cycle parking and bin storage will also be part of the application.

Cllr Frank Lawrenson, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for Assets and Investments, said: “Sitting on the banks of the Brett, just a few minutes’ walk from the high street, this site can offer Hadleigh so much, and after long discussion and consideration these proposals have been drawn up to do just that. By making use of an existing site to provide the housing our district needs, this application will bring more customers to local businesses while maintaining the setting between the river and the cricket ground and the public rights of way across the site.”

In 2015 I was pleased to share a photo story in Hadleigh Community News with our MP, James Cartlidge, as we had organised for a sign to be erected on the A12 showing the exit for Hadleigh. This was the product of a lot of persistence, I can assure you.

But why has that sign vanished? How many of us and our visitors have been frustrated as that sign has been removed and replaced with a new one which does not show Hadleigh at all? (This seems to be the same style sign that was in place a number of years ago.) Villages like East Bergholt are boldly shown, but the only sign for Hadleigh is the heavy vehicles sign pointing to Ipswich and the Hadleigh sign on the exit island - by which time it is too late and drivers are on their way to Ipswich. This is just to assure everyone that the matter is being actioned (I have enlisted James Cartlidge's assistance).

Highways England have been in frequent contact with me and are on to the problem. I have been promised the new sign with Hadleigh clearly shown for mid August (hopefully). Soon guests and tourists will be able to see in good time where to turn off to find our lovely town.

Dear Sir, A big thank you to all the people who voted for me in the 5th July election for Hadleigh South and the wonderful volunteers who delivered campaign leaflets in sweltering temperatures. I am also grateful to Hadleigh Together who gave me some fantastic publicity and support which brought out the younger voters.

I was relieved to get 62% of the vote. There is a growing group of Town Councillors who are up for changing the way the Council does things and hopefully they will be joined by two more as two seats are up for election, one in the North Ward of Hadleigh one in the South Ward. There are two fantastic local guys standing who are passionate about Hadleigh, Kieron Ruddy North Ward and Andy Knock South Ward and if you want to see change in the way the Town Council operates they are the ones to vote for on Thursday 2nd August. At least the Town Council has agreed the issue of Polling Cards this time. There was a lot of confusion on 5th July because people didn’t know which of the Guild Hall Polling Stations to go to - it was a long walk round over cobbles for elderly people.

Conditions take a Toll In this article we remember: Bertie Leslie Hammond 9 August 1918 Ernest William Stuart Carter 13 August 1918 Frederick William Alfred Allen 23 August 1918 Ernest Frederick Rolfe 28 August 1918 James Robert Beckett 30 August 1918 ‘Remembrance Day’ 1918 was on Sunday 4 August. The Daily Mirror describes the scene in London; ‘A flower pilgrimage yesterday to Hyde Park, to lay floral tributes for remembrance sake on a huge shrine, provided one of the most striking scenes in connection with Remembrance Day.’ The day was recognised at church services and events across the country. Meanwhile on the Western Front, victory was on the horizon although the fight was far from over. What lay ahead has been described as ‘the hardest campaign ever fought by the British armed forces’.

For troops at the front it would be an unrelenting fight with little opportunity for rest and furthermore there was a shortage of troops and so many of the new arrivals were very young recruits; indeed the first three Hadleigh men to fall in August 1918 were aged only 18 and 19. The German Army had reached their most westerly point, which was a long way short of the Channel ports and they were weak. The opportunity for the Allies to move towards victory began with the Battle Amiens on 8 August.

Private Bertie Leslie Hammond was born on 11 December 1899 in Benton Street and was the youngest Hadleigh man to lose his life in the Great War. In 1911 he is known to be living at 20 Benton Street. On leaving school he was employed as apprenticed plumber working for Walter Gooding at 86 High Street. In August 1917 aged seventeen and a half he enlisted, he trained with King Royal Rifle Corps and then joined the 6th London Regiment.

Bertie Hammond was in action on the first day of the Battle of Amiens and was one of his battalion’s 327 casualties, he was taken to the rear and died at a casualty clearing station. He has a grave at Vignacourt British Cemetery just north of Amiens. Private Ernest William Stuart Carter was born in 1899 at Debenham where his father was an insurance agent and a local Methodist preacher. The family moved to 9 Portland Place, Gallows Hill, Hadleigh before 1911. Ernest was working as an outfitters assistant when called up in April 1917. He arrived in France one year later joining the 15th/17th West Yorkshire battalion which was a combined battalion formed in December 1917.

On 8 August 1918 they were around Hazebrouck in northern France well away from the British Fourth Army’s main thrust south in the Somme Sector. The war diary records, “The front line became more active than previously. …

During the tour in the line the Battalion [suffered] heavy [loses] by enemy gas shells. 4 Officers and 90 Other Ranks were admitted to Hospital suffering gas poisoning.” One of those was Ernest Carter who died a few days later in a hospital close to Boulogne, he is buried close by at Terlincthun British Cemetery. Private Frederick William Alfred Allen was born in Hadleigh in July 1899 his father was a labourer working for the Urban District Council. He went to Bridge Street school and was conscripted in the middle of 1917 eventually being allocated to the 1st Hertfordshire Regiment. The battalion was heavily engaged in confronting the German Spring Offensive and then in August took part in the Battle of Albert. On 23 August the war diary reports ‘Battalion

attacked at 11am. Attack successful. Railway cutting in front Achiet-le-Grand taken. Casualties - Other Ranks 26 killed and 140 wounded.’ Frederick Allen was one of the casualties who died and was buried close by at Bucquoy Communal Cemetery and he is also remembered on the Hadleigh War memorial.

Lance Corporal Ernest Frederick Rolfe was born August 1895 at Upper Layham and in 1911 was working as a market gardener. He married Hadleigh girl, Eva Skinner, in January 1916 and was mobilised with the 7th Suffolks the next month. He probably enlisted under the Lord Derby scheme at the end of the previous year, his marriage having come too late for him to be classified as a married man and given a few months grace before being called into service. His son Ernest Arthur was born later that year.

Ernest Rolfe probably saw action at the Battle of Arras in April 1917 and almost a year later experienced the full force of the German’s Spring Offensive. In May 1917 the 7th Suffolks were reduced to a cadre with the fighting men including Ernest being transferred to the 1/1st Cambridgeshire regiment.

The battalion was in the front line south of Albert from the start of the Allied August offensive and throughout most of month.

On 28 August they held Maltz Horn Ridge close to Guillemont and Trones Wood where there was heavy shelling throughout the day with thirty seven casualties, among them was Ernest Rolfe.

He has a known grave at Meaulte Military Cemetery and he is remembered on both the Layham and Hadleigh war memorials. Despite the many casualties for the British Army the ‘push’ east continued and on 30 August the 2nd Suffolks were at Ecoust-Saint-Mein close to St Leger (on the present day French A1 motorway just south of Arras). The Suffolks suffered 200 casualties that day, among them Private James Robert Beckett from Hadleigh who was killed in action and buried on the battlefield. He was born in Hadleigh in 1875 and at the age of 43 is one of the oldest names on the Hadleigh War memorial.

He had been a Prior farm labourer working in Hadleigh and at times in Yorkshire. He had on occasions fallen foul of the law and had done time in prison with hard labour; one for deserting his first wife and child and another for cruelty to a horse. In 1904 he enlisted with the Royal Garrison Artillery, but within 6 months was discharged having been convicted of a felony. At the beginning of the war he enlisted with the local territorials, opted for home service and was placed with the 2/5th Suffolks. That option was nullified by the Army Service Act of January 1916 after which he was transferred to the 11th Suffolks. His service history is unclear, but by August 1918 he was with the 2nd Suffolks when he met his end. He left a second wife living in Cambridge.

Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club Eleven of our gymnasts took part in the Pipers Pearls Invitational competition last month at Pipers Vale. It was the first time for most of the girls to have competed against clubs from out of our county, such as South Essex Gymnastics Club and Carousel. This year’s theme was unicorns and the girls had to each design their number based on this. Our gymnasts all competed well, but a special well done goes to Angel Wyncoll, for 3rd on beam and to Nicole Peddelty for gaining 3 apparatus medals and overall 3rd position.

We are thrilled to announce that we now have a full-time home at Birch Farm, Hintlesham. The old play barn is currently being transformed into a fully equipped gymnasium and the kitchen/dining area, a comfortable new coffee shop. July brought the end of our first season at the club, its been an amazing season with so many achievements and we are so proud of every Junior and Adult player.

Our two Adult teams finished their first summer league, both teams did amazing and every week they showed more and more improvements - as individuals and as teams. Congratulations to all our ladies who came back to Netball this season, it can be a huge step coming back to a sport you may not have played since school but the benefits are amazing! If you are over 16years and would like to try Netball we start again 12th September, no need to book just turn up 8-9.30pm £4.50.

On the 4th July the club held its first Presentation Evening, some of the Adults and Juniors won awards for most improved players and coaches players of the season, well done to Brooke Worth who was selected as the Clubs Most Outstanding Player of the Season, Brooke started the club in September with minimal Netball experience but soon became an amazing defender who was selected to train at the Suffolk Development Academy and was a valuable member of Saturn Rockets team.

Next season looks to be a busy one with our Junior teams increasing from 2 to 4 and we start training year 5s. Our Adult teams will start their first competitive winter league and look to enter tournaments!

It has been a great pleasure in recent weeks to welcome various clubs and organisations to Kersey Mill. Bildeston Ladies Club and Hitcham After-Seven Club enjoyed a beautiful warm summers evening here for a tour of Kersey Mill and were provided with refreshments at The Copper Kettle. Our open days have also been well attended by individuals during the month. The Volunteers of The National Trust at Flatford Mill visited one morning to see how the restoration is progressing.

Works to phase 3 of the restoration of Kersey Mill are proceeding well. The Hurst Frame is a heavy wooden frame supporting the gears and three pairs of water driven mill stones. We are now working on the upper section of the Hurst where the mill stones sit. This is known as the bed and the lower stones that sit on it are not surprisingly known as the bed stones.

The section of bed, between the original timber Hurst for the water driven side and the cast iron Hurst that formed the steam driven side, is coming together nicely as can be seen from the attached photographs.

A horizontal Lay Shaft runs through the Hurst Frame in a straight line with gearing transferring power to the mill stones via a Wallower and Crown wheel.

Most of the frame was badly decayed, and the machinery needs complete overhaul and all the wooden teeth will need replacing, this will be part of phase 4 that will hopefully commence in 2019. Although we are in the middle of a heatwave that has resulted in very little water to run the wheel it is hard to believe that works on our annual fundraising event of Santaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Workshop is underway and tickets are already on sale.

Thankyou I would like to thank the 108 people who came to the Suffolk Singers last concert in St. Mary's Hadleigh on Saturday 30th June. From the comments of the audience as they left we know you enjoyed both the choir and the performance of our young clarinetist Lucas. It makes a difference performing to a full house and we hope to return some time in the future. Our next concert is in St Michael's Church, Framlingham on 6th October, watch out for details.

In amongst the usual succession of races and events, occasionally a few Hares go off on an adventure of their own. At the end of June a group of us went off to tackle the one day Coast to Coast challenge from Seascale in Cumbria to Whitby in Yorkshire.

Setting off from our overnight YHA accommodation at five in the morning we were on the start line for six ready to take on the 150 miles and 12,000 feet of ascent. Straight into the action the route took us over Hardknott and Wrynose passes within the first 15 miles. Both of these climbs max out at over 30% gradient and represented the hardest part of the trip. From there it was beautiful Lake District scenery all the way through Windermere and on to the first of four feed stations at Kendal. Each of the feed stations was full of great food and much needed water on what was turning out to be a warm day.

Immediately out of Kendal came a beast of a climb up and out onto the start of the next round of hills in the West Yorkshire Dales National Park. Thirteen miles of steady climbing was then rewarded with a spectacular section over the Dales past Hawes and on towards Catterick. A long, fast generally descending road then took us across the Vale of York and on to the last range of hills, the North York Moors.

Used extensively for the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race, the North York Moors are characterised by short, steep hills, again regularly hitting 30% gradients, and just what you want to be struggling up after already having done 100 miles in the saddle. However, just by moving forward we made our way, mile by mile towards our final goal of Whitby. As a final sting in the tail, though, the last 15 miles was on a difficult and quite demanding section of country lane, and every time we thought we would be able to see the sea, we were rewarded by just another bend in the road or another climb until, finally, with just three miles to go the sea appeared ahead. The final run in was a joyous and slightly emotional affair with the relief that it was all over and the satisfaction of having ridden from one side of the country to the other.

The group got quite spread out over the course of the ride, but we all met up for a reunion on the cliffs at Whitby, complete with fish and chips and champagne. Although a very hard day, it was a great day and one to remember.

In other Hares news, congratulations to Kitty Rigby who joined the ‘dark side’ this month completing her first triathlon at Sudbury. Well done to her and to all the other Hares who have done amazing things again this month.

July sees the annual Ekiden Relay event in which teams from all the local clubs compete over a marathon distance in teams of six. More on that next month when the results will be out.

Meanwhile if you fancy joining us for a casual run out or some more serious training, why not get in touch? You don’t have to cycle 150 miles or run a marathon, just come and improve your fitness as far as you want to. For instance, a short run at Felixstowe beach followed by tea and cake or our trail run from the Limeburners in Offton on 21st July. Or how about a gentle sea swim or a dip at Gosfield Lake on a warm summer evening? There’s stuff going on all the time…..

Hadleigh Hares are a friendly local athletics club catering for all levels and abilities from beginners to Ironman triathletes. It is a fun and friendly way of getting or keeping fit. There is a beginners/improvers session every Monday evening at 7pm meeting at Hadleigh Pool, and we run a session for ladies only as well as more advanced running, and mixed ability swimming and cycling sessions throughout the week.

Captain’s Charity Day at Stoke An extremely good day was held on Monday the 2nd July to raise funds for the Stoke By Nayland Senior’s Captain, John Wheatley, and his chosen charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK. The competition, played on the Gainsborough course was a stableford team challenge with all 4 to score on par 5’s, 3 on par 4’s and 2 on par 3’s.

The highlight of the day must be two hole in ones, Alan Hands, Captain John Wheatley both on the short 3rd hole, and Keith Oxborrow

by Keith Oxborrow, his 1st, and Alan Hands, his 3rd. This must surely be an extremely rare occurrence and a probably unique experience at SBN - well done to Keith and Alan.

Congratulations to the winning team of Paul Sandfield / Ian Bickers / Keith Prichard & Peter Jay who scored a very creditable 133 points.

The biggest winner of the day was Alzheimer’s Research who will have benefitted by £2400 from the days fun and games.

The Phoenix Collective The much loved and supported Phoenix Players at the Quay Theatre in Sudbury continues this September under a new name and a new director.

Rachel Bennett who has had a career in inclusive theatre for over 20 years, promises to work hard to build on the strengths and friendships that the current group offers. The Phoenix Collective will take place on Fridays at the Jetty down at the Quay and begin on 21st September from 4.15/6.15pm “I am very excited to be given this opportunity to work within the Sudbury community to provide inclusive, fun and engaging theatre experiences for all.

Theatre is very much a process and whilst we may celebrate our success at the end with a show, along the way it can provide very real opportunities to develop in many areas including confidence, creativity, teamwork, communication and life skills.” The group celebrates all abilities and whilst experience is not necessary, enthusiasm is !! If you’ve never tried drama before but fancy a go contact us for further information. Whatever your different needs are they are not a barrier to creativity. Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex Hot, damn hot. Many of us can’t remember a summer like it – week after week of scorching weather, with the outfield as parched as 1976, for those who CAN remember it. It’s a bit of luck we have a fireman amongst our ranks to patrol the outfield.

However, don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s been a batsman’s paradise.

One Saturday in June the 2nd XI were torched for just 34, the latest and worst in a run of low totals that has seen the team plunge to the depths of Division 5. Perhaps mercifully there has been a couple of blank weekends in July with August looking like a make or break month for Martin Grayling’s side. The 1st XI have not had the best of runs either, with a narrow loss at Woolpit followed by two disappointing performances against Wivenhoe and Witham. Jamie Colcomb stepped up to the Firsts with an impressive knock of 60 against Woolpit. Josh Davey and Tom Piddington are once again the pick of the batsmen, each with nearly 400 runs to their name. They could do with two or three more wins to ease any relegation fears.

There hasn’t been too much cricket for the Sunday side recently, but it has been very productive for young Taylor Locke, who has made scores of 68, 55 and 72 in each of his last three matches. If only he was also available on a Saturday! The Ladies XI are the only one of our senior sides to be looking upwards as we approach the business end of the season. After suffering a couple of defeats the Ladies got back to winning ways with a fantastic victory at the Bardwell beach.

And so it rolls on into August. Will there be a hosepipe ban? Will the heat finally be deep enough for Blake Ambrose to make an appearance? Will the 2nd team ever win again?!

Hadleigh Bowling Club Hadleigh’s bowling green is widely recognised as one of the very best, and so it was not surprising to be asked to host a county game between Suffolk and Hertfordshire on 6 September.

Even better, four members of the club, Helen Swift, Rowena Aherne, Christine Woollard and Pam Linge have been selected for the Suffolk team. With the football world cup over, and even if it weren’t, this is now the team to follow!

And you’re pretty much guaranteed no fake dives to win penalties or dangerous tackles. Well, I hope not anyway.

Meantime members are playing in a wide range of external and internal competitions. Mick Barrand in the Veterans Singles, and Mick and Doug Doust in the Pairs have both won through to the Area Finals with the Nationals ahead if they’re successful.

A lot of new players have joined the club this season and are taking advantage of the weather to play regularly in competitions and friendly roll-ups. And among new players who else but Melania Trump was playing bowls down in London with the Prime Minister’s husband. But hey, Melania, those high heels, sorry, but a big nono. Very, very bad for the green and no, I’m afraid it doesn’t matter even if you are married to the President, we’re really going to have to insist on flat shoes if you come over to Hadleigh.

Stoke by Nayland Golf Week An exciting new venture for Stoke by Nayland Golf Club has been ‘Golf Week’: the brainchild of 2018 Captains Alan Line and Elaine Davidson.

Each day saw competitions of different formats.

After months of planning, the week starting on Sunday 1st July saw the Mens’ Club Champion, Ian Carter crowned and this was followed by ‘Fox and Hares’. This is a Barbara Jones, Lesley Garnett competition for golfers and non (President), Elaine Davidson, Charlotte golfers, the non golfers being Thompson and Lesley Hitchcock responsible for the putting. Over seventy competitors took part, including a 5 year old. The players, and families, all celebrated with a BBQ on the terrace in perfect weather. The Seniors’ Captain, John Wheatley, then held his charity day on Monday when he presented an interim cheque for £2500 to the Alzheimer’s Research UK. The day included two holes in one for Alan Hands and Keith Oxborrow. Tuesday was ‘Multiplier’ day with an 18 Hole competition in the morning and 9 holes in the evening. This was an opportunity to invite guests to play at Stoke.

On Wednesday members saw parts of the Constable Course they had never seen before. A wicked 9 Hole ‘Cross Country’ course devised by Pros Roly Hitchcock and Simon Dainty but the winners still came in with a magnificent scramble score of nett 31. The July 4th American food was enjoyed in the ‘Champions’ Lounge’, a new addition to the facilities at Stoke by Nayland.

The highlight of the week, for the Ladies, was the Pro Am event. The Professionals included Jamie Moul, fresh from competing in the Open Qualifier for Carnoustie, Miles Collins from the PGA EuroproTour, Charlotte Thompson from the Ladies European Tour and multi winner England International Lily May Humphreys. The Professionals played in a drawn team, with three lady members, with a team score and an individual professional score to count. The winning Professional was Jamie Moul and Charlotte Thompson headed the winning team with Elaine Davidson, Lesley Hitchcock and Barbara Jones.

On the same day the Juniors had their own competition with a closely fought competition, pairing up with an adult. The ever popular Friday Night Mixed Competition was played with a slight twist, a power play, with rewards for a more daring approach to a difficult pin placement.

The culmination event of the week was the three Captains’ Summer Ball, again a new venture for the Club. Alan, Elaine and John were joined by members, guests, families and friends with drinks on the terrace, a three course meal and dancing to ‘Grand Central’. The Captains had organised a wonderful week for members and guests alike, including perfect weather.
