Final finishing touches at Hadleigh Pool!

The new swimming pool in Hadleigh has reached its final milestone, after it was officially opened following final finishing touches to the building. The modernised swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure has now been officially opened by councillors, Abbeycroft Leisure representatives and partners.

It’s part of a £2.4m investment by Babergh District Council, and its partner Abbeycroft Leisure, to modernise swimming facilities at the council-owned centre. The project has also been supported with £200k provided by Hadleigh Town Council, and a Sports England grant of £150k.

The upgrades now compliment the other modern spaces at the centre including the gym, and community and social rooms.

St Mary's Church of England Primary School in Hadleigh, Hadleigh High School, and the Hadleigh Dementia Alliance group also helped inspire the pool’s unique sunshade designed by local artist Jo Chapman. A selection of the groups’ artwork can be found on permanent display at the centre which explore themes such as the importance of wellbeing and exercise, the pool environment, local landscape and more. ...continued on page 4

Your partner needs help with their financial affairs, but can you assist?

Commonly with married couples or those in a long-term relationship they each have assets in their own name and in joint names (e.g. bank accounts and the family home). This often leads people to think that they can manage the financial affairs of their spouse or partner, or could do if the need arose; however, this is not the case.

Unfortunately, should your spouse or partner become unable to manage their affairs themselves, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and you will not be able to deal with organisations on their behalf.

What is needed to be able to help - To assist with your spouse or partner’s affairs during their lifetime you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means your spouse or partner will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) with a specialist solicitor.

What happens if I do not have LPAs? - Many people need to assist with these matters because their spouse or partner has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident. If you want to help your partner with financial decisions and they did not have Powers of Attorney in place, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved.

Two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney - LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of LPA: Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home).

Health and welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves.

People often think that if necessary, they would be able to make decisions about where their spouse or partner receives care, what type of care they receive and whether or not they should receive life-sustaining treatment. Without an LPA in place, relatives are not able to make these decisions.

Hadleigh Walkers Our August walk on Saturday 14th will start at the Hintlesham George and is a circular walk of 10 miles. As usual we will depart at 0930.

Our route passes Chattisham Coles Green Fm, then either across to Park House to Jermyns Fm or Apple Tree Fm and again to Jermyns Fm (the reason for the uncertainty is that we have encountered some thuggish cows in the past and may decide to avoid them). The route then proceeds through Little Wenham, Vauxhall, Orchard Lea and back to Hintlesham. The walk will take nearly 4 hours and we will have 2 short stops enroute. If anyone intends to have lunch at the George there is parking on request at the rear or alternatively at the Community Centre.

Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at this time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

There’s always something special about seeing customers enjoying new facilities and having a splash after months of hard work by everyone involved. “The pool and our other new facilities in Sudbury, will play a huge part in supporting our residents’ health, fitness and wellbeing for generations to come – and form a key step towards achieving the aims set out in our Leisure, Sport & Physical Activity Strategy.

“We look forward to working with our partners on more exciting projects as part of our Invest in Hadleigh programme over the coming years.”

Tracey Loynds, development director at Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “The new pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure is fantastic and a real testament to partnership working - we’re thrilled our customers have been able to enjoy these new facilities.

“This was obviously a huge project for us and for the people of Hadleigh, which we hope will support the community to get more active. “Government restrictions of course still remain in place for the time being so please remember to book your visit on our website before heading over to try out the pool.”

Built by local firm Rose Builders, the new facilities include; • Brand new pool with five 25 metre lanes of Sport England competition standard sauna • Spectator seating • Improved disabled access to the pool via easy access steps and handrail, and pool pod lift • Changing Places toilet and shower facility • Exterior sunshade and artwork designed by community groups and local artist Jo Chapman • Access through to the existing changing facilities, refurbished in 2010 • As well as a new plant room, and storage for swimming club and pool equipment The pool has been open since the Spring to avoid unnecessary disruption for members while finishing touches were put in place. This followed the easing of lockdown back in April and £182k funding from the Government’s National Leisure Recovery Fund to support the Covid-recovery of the council’s two leisure centres.

Final steps to re-landscape the former pool area into park land, to ensure the build results in no net loss of open space, are expected to be completed by the Autumn.

The Hadleigh Archive Hadleigh’s History On Your Doorstep

The Market Place in Hadleigh during the late 1940s. The current market area is just a remanent of the original area of the medieval market which then extended across to where Duke Street is today. In the background is the White Lion Hotel a favourite haunt for the farmers once business was done on market day. At the rear of the hotel there was stabling, the ostler and extensive outbuildings. To the right of the image was a range of timber buildings used as Crickmores Egg Packing Station. At this time, the market, traditionally held on a Monday, had reduced mainly to poultry, eggs, produce and deadstock.

One of the pens from when cattle and sheep were auctioned still remains, and did so into the 1960’s. The lorry belongs to Wilfred Joseph Knott, he was a farmer at The Downs, Stoke by Nayland. Further into the marketplace was the Eastern Counties Bus Station.

The burnt out remains of Lloyds Bank is showing at the left-hand side at the corner of the High Street. It was on the 10th November, 1945 when a fire began in the adjacent High Street property. This was No. 43 High Street, Herbert James Dibble’s gents’ outfitters. The premises were timber framed from earlier centuries, and fire soon spread into the equally old building of Lloyds Bank. Some may still remember the stories of how on that day, the bank staff rescued the cash and paper notes amid the flames and taking them to a safe place. Mr Dibble’s shop was destroyed, and a wooden hoarding erected along the edge of the pavement.

This corner looked in a sorry state for nearly five years when the bank was eventually reconstructed and opened in 1950.

The evidence of the fire, and the known dates, all helps to date this photograph.

So often a location and date are rarely provided on a photograph, but with certainty this photograph can be dated between 1946 and 1949.

This is a tricky time of the year for supplies from Spain, though, because of the often quite-lengthy factory summer holiday closures. For this reason, Sibarita aims to place orders in the next week or so.

Deliveries from the EU are suffering from severe shortages in the availability of transport owing to a massive shortage of HGV drivers in the UK post-Brexit and a reluctance of EU transport companies to risk delays on returning from the UK. St. Peter’s Sudbury - The Secret Garden The final performance by This Is My Theatre Company in St Peters Church in Market Hill, Sudbury before it closes for renovation in September will be The Secret Garden on Wednesday 11th August. Town Mayor’s Update These are still far from easy times, and uncertainty is going to rule our lives for quite a while yet, but there are at last more normal, enjoyable and entirely good things starting to happen once more. So let me start with some words from the Deputy Mayor, Gordon McLeod. He writes: “I recently had the privilege of being invited along to the AGM of the Shelley centre for therapeutic riding. The meeting was held outdoors and because of Covid restrictions only 30 people were allowed so safe social distancing could be observed. After the meeting I was introduced to some of the volunteers at the centre and given an insight into the work that they carry out.

“The centre provides riding lessons for people with all classes of disabilities. All the people who come to the centre will have been referred by medical specialists in their particular condition who are well aware of the possible benefits that the centre provides. What struck me most about the volunteers was the passion and drive that they all share, their passion for their horses and their centre, but most of all their unwavering devotion to helping less fortunate people than themselves ride their way to wellbeing, if not always physically, definitely mentally and emotionally.

The riders bond with all the horses that they come into contact with, and I think the main reason for that is that the horses do not judge. I was profoundly moved by the centre and the wonderful volunteers that work there.

“The Shelley centre for therapeutic riding is a charity and is affiliated to the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Hadleigh Town Council has been very pleased to award them a grant of £2000 on behalf of you all to support all the hard work they carry out.”

We were able to give a similar grant to Alfie Cutts at our meeting on 15 July, to help him make his film about smuggling in and around Hadleigh, “The Bootleggers of East Anglia”. This is one of those projects that celebrates both our town’s past and present, bringing to the fore its rich history, and also involving the wider community in its creation. Please keep an eye out for any requests from him for support, a good location maybe, or help with costumes. What a hopeful sign it is that a young man is using his own imagination and creativity to do real good for the town he comes from.

Hadleigh Old School A Flamboyance of Flowers September will be blooming at Hadleigh Old School, the arts and entertainment venue at 5 Bridge Street.

First, the gardens will be open as part of Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh – please enter via the main door from the pavement on 4 September from 11am-5pm.

Then from the 16th to 26th September the hall stages a gallery show by leading botanical artist Sandra Wall Armitage.

Hadleigh Hollyhocks (pictured), a large watercolour by Sandra, was chosen as a cover image for Plantae 2021, the national showcase of the Society of Botanical Artists – noted as exhibiting excellence in all art that is plant related. The picture was based on hollyhocks growing in a high street garden in Hadleigh, together with Sandra’s own specimens in Chelsworth. It has been likened to a skyscraper of flowers, as these magnificent blooms tower in their magnificence.

Sandra Wall Armitage has won many awards for her creations, both academic and popular – including the People’s Choice and the Daler Rodney Award for her work ‘Prickly Bunch’ which featured thistles. For many years she was a leading commercial artist commissioned to create greetings cards, textile, and fabric designs. Her latest show will include cards and prints as well as many of her newer ‘freer’ paintings created in a cottage garden in rural Suffolk. Sunflowers compete with the Hollyhocks for the tallest show-offs, while other pictures include giant poppies, lavender, and pinks. Flower beds have recently been shown in research, to encourage just as much insect diversity as the wild countryside, they are a pollinator’s paradise, and a magnet for bees. If you wish to be inspired by nature in all its colourful glory, please do come to this exhibition.

On All Takeaway Food Collections Monday to Thursday

The Cock Inn Freedom freedom freedom I hear everyone say. Well it’s a great relief and hopefully we are now on our way back towards normality, though I believe with great caution. While the hospitality sector has suffered more than most, it may be wise to take small steps forward rather than big leaps! We at The Cock Inn will make things easier for all. Table service has gone and we now have a little more furniture inside. We will however discourage ‘drinking at the bar’ for a while until we see how things play out throughout August and into September. Pub games such as darts, pool and bar billiards will resume though with great care. Lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater folks. Everyone has made extreme sacrifices over the past year or so, so lets remember why!

The good weather is with us and the mid to the latter part of July was tremendous with glorious sunshine. Our newly enlarged garden has more than doubled the space available outside and we even purchased new furniture too. We planted new flowers and shrubs to make the environment more appealing, and erected an attractive fence along Threadneedle Street to add appeal and security. Come and see for yourself!

During August we have a bumper month of fantastic and exciting ‘live’ sport ahead.

The Tokyo Olympics, though starting in July will extend into August, followed by the Para Olympics from the 24th of the month. There are two F1 Motor Grand Prix, one in Hungary and the other in Belgium, both on Sunday afternoons as normal, with three Moto GP motorbike races too, including the British Moto GP at Silverstone and a further two in Austria. International cricket throughout August with England taking on India in a number of 20Twenty matches. The British Lions are in action too with the 2nd Test v the Springboks on the 31st July and the 3rd and final Test on the 7th August. Both KO times will be at 5.00pm. Finally, the Premier League will resume for the new season on Friday 13th August with newly promoted Brentford playing Arsenal. We are sure of another exciting season with rivals Norwich City winning promotion last season and some super signings in the top echelons. We are able to show three different events at the same time with our Sky and BT Sport Multi Boxes and please remember we have the big screen too for those popular events.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group Members of the group, together with relatives and friends, continue to support the Practice during the Covid vaccination sessions. In an effort to accommodate the work pattern of younger patients most recent sessions have been early morning, late afternoon, early evening and all day Saturday. The reduction between jabs from eleven to eight weeks resulted in a concentrated effort on 17th July with a total of 700 vaccines given that day. If you still haven’t had your second jab please contact the Practice after 10a.m to find out when it will be possible.

Many volunteers have been helping with the programme since January 2021 while others have given their time when possible. With more scope for visiting and holidays volunteer numbers have reduced considerably so new recruits are always welcome. Contact Jan Devey for information.

By the time this goes to print the 31st July deadline for the Patient Survey will not have been reached. We hope to have the results in time for the September edition.

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s “Summer of Cycling” promotion has really taken off with events and social rides galore and over 50 cyclists taking advantage of the £10 adult membership offer (up to 31/12/22).

The annual Gayford Flyer Cycle Sportive will take place on Sunday, 12th September. There will be new routes of 30 and 60 miles and it is £15 to enter.

This year the emphasis is on keeping riders local and exploring the quiet lanes close to the town. To find out more and sign up, go to www.hadleighcycling.co.uk The Club has re-started its Junior Section with a 6-week programme at the new Northern Gateway Cycle Track, Colchester (off the A12). The programme will run until 29th August (Thursdays, 6 – 7pm). There are 20 places available for children and these will be allocated on a “first come first served” basis. The course is suitable for riders who can ride a bike unaided. The focus is on core riding skills, road discipline and confidence. The course is led by Marshall Crowe, British Cycling Eastern Region Road & TT Coach and the Club’s own qualified coaches.

The cost is £5 per session and riders need to be members of the Club. Adult members of the Club will also have an opportunity to experience competitive riding at the Northern Gateway in a safe environment.

The Club runs social rides throughout the summer. Our Sunday rides usually begin at 8am (average speed 15mph) and 9.30am (12/13mph) from The George and there is a café stop.

We’re also offering social rides for ladies on Wednesdays. They begin at 6pm from the High School and last 1 - 1.5 hours at the pace of the slowest rider. Both rides are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub or visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk Finally, many people have commented about the sheer number of cyclists visiting the town using the pubs and cafes. We can only assume that they have been drawn here by our terrific cycle map (copies available from the visitors’ centre and the library) and the new cycle stands.

Hadleigh Choral Society Soon the joyful strains of choral singing will once again fill the Ansell Center as Hadleigh Choral Society starts rehearsals for their autumn program featuring Vivaldi's Gloria and Schubert's Mass in G. The well known and much loved Gloria showcases Vivaldi's extraordinary talent and lifts the spirits of singers and audiences alike, with its combination of solos, duets and four part harmonies. In Schubert's Mass in G, we experience riveting melodies of his settings of the Mass Ordinary in the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei. Professional soloists and the Colchester Symphony Orchestra will perform with us at the concert on 20th November, at St Mary's church in Hadleigh. Rehearsals commence Tuesday 7th September at 7:30 pm, at the Ansell Center in Hadleigh.

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 65 (August - September 2021) Jane Richardson, who lives in France, continues her series about ‘Eddie The Hadleigh Historian Botwright: a man who loved Hadleigh’ The Hadleigh Historian with his schooldays at Threadneedle Issue 65 August – September 2021 Price £4 Street and Bridge Street followed by the period when he first started work. He moved from shop boy in High Street, firstly at a chemist and then with an ironmonger before moving on to the nursery in Cemetery Road (now Friars Road). Along the way, Eddie’s recollections included travelling circuses, market days and the characters that could be seen there plus Hadleigh May Show.

Another of those ‘Holes in Hadleigh’ features on the front cover, this time a charnel at St Mary’s Church. In the past, when gravediggers came across earlier burials, most of which were without coffins, the disarticulated skeletal remains were gathered up and placed into a charnel house. Can you guess where it was just by looking at the picture?

Mentioning the magazine’s front cover, Issue 63 showed the winner of a race held in 1909 with an accompanying piece that was all questions and not many answers.

When Alan Hodgson of Sproughton saw the magazine on sale in Hollow Trees Farm Shop at Semer, other customers there heard him exclaim that the speedy athlete was his grandfather. Alan sent photographs and a newspaper article to The Hadleigh Historian and now all is revealed including that the prize received

by Frederick Rolfe on that day is still with the family.

Other readers have been in touch concerning the Salvation Army article also in Issue 63. Russell Pipe, who spent his 1950s boyhood in Hadleigh and now lives in Kent, was able to name members of the band as it included his father, bandmaster William ‘Bill’ Pipe. Nigel Crisp of Hadleigh has contributed an early 20th century photograph of the band with all musicians named and an article ‘Further glimpses of Hadleigh Salvation Army Corps’. How many of us going down Duke Street realise that the Corp’s headquarters once had a different life standing in Pond Hall Road?

Two separate articles mention that the moveable feast Easter Monday was formerly celebrated in Hadleigh not only with events starting off in Market Place connected with Plough Monday but also as a day for races that finished in High Street. Perhaps Easter Monday could be made a Hadleigh community day once again, when such occasions are permitted after Covid-19 has been safely conquered.

Hadleigh Women's Institute Hadleigh Women's Institute are very pleased to report that we will be able to meet in the Seminar Room above the library on Tuesday 17th August, at 7.30 pm. Apart from a few coffee mornings, this will be the first meeting since February 2020.

Although it will be the Annual Meeting obviously there is not much to report, so it will be more of a social occasion. The windows will be open, masks, although not mandatory, would be appreciated at least until seated. There will be sanitiser at the top of the stairs. Tea and coffee will be served in paper cups. I want to break free – do you?

I am writing this three days before the Government lifts most of the restrictions that have been in place for the last year and a half, and yet I am not completely sure what that will mean. I have seen many singing at Wembley whilst the England team came so close to winning, but we have not been able to sing as a choir since March 2020. We have missed the singing, the fun and the people. Can we meet up again soon? Will people want to get together to sing?

Hoping that the answer to the above questions is a resounding YES I think that it is time to announce that, all other things considered, THE COMMUNITY CHOIR IS COMING BACK!! We have set a date of Thursday 9th September as the relaunch date for the choir, although we have not yet set a venue for this as we have to take a lot of things into account.

In the meantime, we are hoping to have some singing events in August for anyone to come along and sing – just simple singing to backing tracks in the open air (weather and Government instructions permitting). We will provide words and music; you just have to provide the voice. As these will be organised at the last minute please check either the Hadleigh Facebook pages or the noticeboard in the Barclays car park (can we still say that?).

The sun is our greatest source of energy and silicon is found in sand, which is the second most abundant material on the planet so this really is a no brainer. Finally, one of the other great benefits of embracing this type of technology is that the home owner becomes much more energy conscious. Not only do they start to keep an eye on what is being generated, but they also make sure that the energy they have is not wasted.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Throughout the worst of the pandemic ‘returning to normal’ has sounded like a distant and unbelievable prospect. But a return to something like pre-Covid life is now possible following the lifting of restrictions in mid-July. Of course, it’s not as simple as suddenly waking up to a day of zero Covid-19 and life exactly as it always was - if only. Certainly, the PM is surely right to stress that for all that the legal lockdown has lifted, we must remain cautious. It’s about balancing freedom and responsibility.

To do this, we must remember how extraordinary it was for the state to legislate to close businesses overnight that had been built up over many years; how unprecedented it was that we passed laws on the number of people allowed in a private home; how we banned all kinds of wonderful human activities (e.g. golf, or singing in a choir); how we removed freedoms and halted the pastimes that define our culture. This was a state of emergency justifying extreme measures; but the emergency has passed, even if Covid-19 has not completely vanished.

Some will argue that while the virus is prevalent it is ‘foolhardy’ to end lockdown.

However, the fact is that we cannot realistically hope to eradicate all Covid-19, we have to learn to live with the disease and stop the position of removing fundamental human liberty to avoid pressure on hospitals. Naturally, we all want our hospitals to be as fully functioning as possible, but the agenda must now move to reopening sensibly; driving our economic recovery; and in turn tackling our deficit and raising the revenues to fund the greatest possible effort to bear down on Covid-19 backlogs, from the courts, to HGV licence testing, to those waiting for elective surgery.

And I am bound to point out that there is a catch in the lockdown lifting, and it goes ‘ping’. The rules around self-isolation for the double jabbed will not change until mid-August, which has naturally caused a more restrained reopening. But the direction of travel is clear: as a result of our brilliant vaccine program, we are finally on the road to a brighter future.

My virtual walk in Germany from Hamburg to Munich, a distance of 994 miles, was completed on the 28th June. On the 1st July I set off virtually from Ness Pont, Lowestoft to St David's, Pembrokeshire. As I was very pleased to accompany JW on the walks with which he celebrated his 80th birthday, my total mileage for the 4 days was 58 and on the 18th July I am in Worcester. With 160 miles to go, I will walk through the Wye Valley, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath and Carmarthen and hope to arrive at St David's in the first week of August.

Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Charity For the past few years we have had a project delivering Christmas Stockings to disadvantaged children in Belarus. Last year due to the pandemic we were unable to even get the presents to Belarus to be distributed on our behalf.

However, we did manage to find a service that we could pay to take the stockings to Ukraine so the project was delivered successfully. Due to Covid plus the recent events in Belarus it is highly unlikely that we will be able to go to Belarus this year but have decided the Christmas project will definitely be going ahead in Ukraine. We hope to travel out early December to deliver the stockings to children in schools and homes. The children have already been allocated by our contact in Ukraine and we have transport arranged to take the stockings on ahead of our arrival. However, as with all transport, this comes at a cost.

People within the Charity have provided stockings full of goodies and we are now looking for sponsors to cover the cost of carriage to Ukraine. For only £3.50 per stocking you can sponsor a child, you may choose whether a boy or girl and you will receive the name of the child/ren you sponsor plus a photograph will be sent to you on our return showing the child receiving the gift which will be given in your name. Hadleigh & District Flower Club As I sat in the garden enjoying a cup of coffee and some sunshine I suddenly realised it was time to write a few words for the Community News, where does time go.

Hope this finds you all well and enjoying the few days of sunshine that have been promised.

The committee are all fine and we are working towards our first meeting on September 14th at United Reform Church, Hadleigh at 7.30 pm, all being well. Sadly covid is not going to go away and we must still be cautious, but if we are sensible we might be able to get our lives back on track. Do take care.

Bridge Street Allotment Association July was a busy month at the allotments. The warm, wet weather has resulted in lots of green growth – especially of weeds!

Nonetheless plot holders are harvesting good crops of beans and peas, potatoes, salad crops and onions, fruit is ready for picking and winter crops have been planted out.

Like all gardeners we are trying to become ‘greener’ by reducing our use of chemicals and peat-based compost and growing wild flowers for pollinators.

It is good to see our friends from MIND back working their allotment – we can all appreciate how good gardening is for our mental health.

Hadleigh is fortunate to have three lovely allotment sites. Bridge Street and Toppesfield Close allotments are owned by Hadleigh Town Council and have an Association for plot holders and leisure gardeners, which is part of the national Allotment Association. For £3 a year we operate a cost saving seed scheme with Kings Seeds, produce a monthly newsletter and provide third party insurance for members.

Our seed prices for members are typically around one third of shop prices which more than covers the annual membership fee. Kings are a leading supplier of top quality vegetable seeds, flowers seeds, organic vegetable seeds, herbs seeds, Sweet Pea seeds, soft fruit and various plug plants. Many of us have been using their products on our allotments for more than a decade. If you are a plot holder or leisure gardener please consider joining the Allotment Association.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club The wet and windy weather we have had during June and into July has taken its toll on quite a few flowering perennials this year. I did, however spot this campanula carpatica or bell flower looking good and took a photo in between the showers. With so much time to spend in the garden earlier in the year I had put in supports before they really started to get going and they have done the job, I think the visiting bee appreciates it too!

As the year goes on things are beginning to return to normal and I am pleased to say that the Club is once again going to be part of The Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh on Saturday September 4th. We will be running a plant stall as we did last time in the garden of one of our members at Toppesfield Mill House, Tinkers Lane, so please come and visit us there.

At the end of June Sue, another of our members, opened her beautiful garden in Semer as part of the Open Gardens scheme. Lots of helpers were on hand, including some Club members, the rain held off, there were plenty of visitors, a good time was had by all and well over £1,000 was raised for charity which was brilliant.

It has been a very unpredictable season for the garden over the last couple of months with more rain than usual for this part of the country as well as fluctuating temperatures. Slugs and snails have left me with one cucumber plant out of the four I planted (looked again this morning - all gone!), two courgette plants have disappeared and the climbing french beans are trying desperately to get to the top of the canes away from their pursuers!

In the vegetable garden now is the time to sow spring cabbage and autumn and winter salads. Cordon tomatoes need to be stopped by removing the main shoot after the fourth truss so all the fruit ripens before the end of the season, bush tomatoes can be allowed to keep growing and remember to keep deadheading ornamental plants to encourage new flowers to form. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

We’ve been released from the Covid restrictions (for now, anyway) but worrying increases in the Covid figures mean we still need to be cautious. So will any of my readers be travelling this month? I wish you well, if you are! Just like the swallows, we want you to come back, remember.

Our Head Office has decreed that we may have two side walkers with our riders at last, so many more people will be here in September.

We try to accommodate all our riders’ needs and abilities so I’m enclosing photos, one showing Jessica on Belle rising off the lead rein like a little pro. The other shows our new pony called Roddy learning the ropes with his rider and her support team. Clever ‘hooves’ the two of them.

Lastly the cute one of Camilla and Squidgy sharing their feed bucket is a reminder that the horses and ponies do age!

These two ladies are in their mid thirties, Shetland sisters who have worked their long lives at the centre for our very smallest riders.

Now with health issues themselves, they are managing to stay active with Lyn’s amazing help and expertise, and like all old people they are pretty set in their ways. We love them! Happy holidays everyone and see you in September.

Spokes for Strokes In October 2019, at the age of 48, Liane Stone suffered a major stroke and was rushed to Ipswich Hospital where she fought for her life in Intensive Care. When she was stable enough, she was moved to their Specialist Stroke Unit, where she stayed for five months. Here, she received intensive nursing, medical and therapy treatment, but during this time she did suffer relapses which saw her back in Intensive Care.

Just before Lockdown in March 2020, she received the news that she had been accepted into the NHS Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Caroline House in Norwich and this is where the hard work began. The amazing and dedicated staff helped Liane to speak, eat, walk again and she was also able to complete jigsaws!

But most importantly, she needed to gain independence so she could go home.

It was a really tough time for Liane, as this was whilst not being able to see her husband Ade, her daughter Danielle, and family or friends for five months.

Luckily, with the help of social media, she was able to share her progress and keep in touch with everyone but at times it was upsetting to see her in pain and at some really low points. However, being strong and determined, Liane defied the odds and proved this when we received the video of her walking - there were tears all round!

In August 2020, a small group of family and friends were over the moon to be there when she finally arrived back home, being driven by Ade after a very long ten months away. Liane’s recovery continues with physiotherapy at the Icanho Centre in Stowmarket. Life for Liane has changed, with adaptions having to be made to manage the long-lasting effects following the stroke but she continues to improve and she also hopes to be able to drive an adapted vehicle in the future.

She has been supported by her employer RG Carter who have helped her to return to work on a part-time basis from home.

Liane, her family, and friends want to thank the Stroke Unit at Ipswich Hospital and Caroline House by raising £10,000 to recognise the dedication of the staff that helped her on the road to recovery and to help all their other patients. The money raised will make a real difference to patients and staff, as the extra funds are used to enhance services and facilities, as well as purchasing additional equipment to optimise patient care.

A sponsored bike ride named ‘Spokes for Strokes’ has been organised from Ipswich Hospital to Caroline House, Norwich and then returning to Ipswich on 18th September 2021. There are over seventy cyclists, who include family, friends, work colleagues and NHS Staff, plus an army of volunteers to man water stations, provide cake and other support on the day.

Sponsorship has been gained from RG Carter, Longreach, DPL, GK Fencing and Castons.

Liane will be joining Team Spokes for Strokes but will be participating from her home as part of the rehabilitation. On the day, she will be there travelling in a support vehicle to encourage everyone to keep going. Many of the cyclists and volunteers are from Hadleigh and the surrounding area. Liane, who has just celebrated her 50th Birthday with her twin sister Paula, lived in Hadleigh where she worked after leaving Hadleigh High School. For many years she was a member of Hadleigh Ladies Hockey Club and is a keen fan of Hadleigh Rugby Club.

We all hope you will consider making a contribution to both these worthy causes which like every part of the NHS, needs extra funding to continue providing the wonderful service they deliver every day to so many patients.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

After another July downpour some of our bedraggled ladies could be heard laughing and chatting as they exercised the rescued dogs in the garden. Bev has been helping at SESAW for three years in between caring for her own horses. She thinks people don’t realise that cleaning kennels is mucky, hard work particularly in the winter, “the TV programmes make it look so glamorous”.

Seven years ago, Debbie chose to work four full days a week leaving a day for volunteering. She says it is rewarding to spend time with the dogs, building their trust through kindness.

“Everyone is so friendly and it is wonderful to see the dogs go to new, loving homes.” Enthusiastic helpers, Judy and Ivy agree, they both help with animal care, sorting donated goods and fundraising.

Despite the tough times, no matter what they’ve been through, our volunteers keep coming for love of the animals. After suffering an arm injury in the Spring, Debbie recruited her husband as chauffeur cum dog walker for a few weeks!

We are lucky to have equally dedicated volunteers each day but the numbers are dwindling due to various life changes. If you have what it takes to care for the animals, help with general maintenance or assist with fundraising, please contact us and don’t forget to leave your phone number. Hadleigh Youth Academy, is getting set for Summer!

A range of fun activities to keep the kids entertained during the weeks ahead is being organised by Hadleigh Youth Academy. The summer programme, run over 5 weeks, starts from Monday 26th July until Friday 27th August. Funded by Suffolk County Council, the activities include arts & crafts, archery, fencing, drama school, tennis and more!

A booking/consent form must be completed and returned before the events start and can be downloaded from the Hadleigh Foodbank Charity website www.hadleighfoodbank.org or printed forms are available from the Fresh Start Charity Shop (Units 2, 3 Church View, Kersey Mill). A timetable is set out on the website and tickets for each session are available via Eventbrite. All children eligible for free schools meals will be able to take part in the activities for free and also receive a free packed lunch, provided by The Miller’s Kitchen. Most of the events will be taking place at Kersey Mill, unless otherwise stated.

Representatives from Hadleigh Foodbank Charity will be available at all venues and parents/guardians are requested to remain with their children on site too. So let the games begin!

Hadleigh Foodbank Charity continues to support many families in and around Hadleigh on a weekly basis. In the last year we have given out 7,332 bags of food. Our volunteers have delivered 2,496 times to various families and we currently have 8 rounds a week. We have supported 296 adults and 259 children a month. We have also supported families with a variety of goods to ensure they have decent living conditions, items

include white goods, carpets, slow cookers, duvets, furniture and bikes.

They have received food vouchers to purchase goods we can’t supply.

We would like to thank Morrisons, Co-op, Fareshare and the community of Hadleigh and surrounding villages for your continued support.

Parish Council The following notes are the main matters discussed at the parish council meeting of 30 June 2021.

• District Council report Hadleigh had been due to host Suffolk’s annual Armed Forces Week celebrations; however, due to the extension of Covid restrictions, most events had been cancelled. Babergh and Mid Suffolk had submitted their Joint Local Plan for examination by the Secretary of State. This was due to have taken place on 21 June but had now been postponed as it was to have been held partly remotely and partly in person, but some internet connections had failed. It would now be held fully in person in September; this should not affect the overall timetable. Councillor Ward confirmed that Babergh would move the rubbish behind the defibrillator on Brett Green which the Clerk had reported.

• County Council report With regard to the speeding initiative, Councillor Hall had facilitated a site meeting to agree the location of the poles for the SID devices.

She had reported the overgrown vegetation along the footpath from Upper Layham to Hadleigh and was awaiting a response; Councillor Woods commented that, although most of the problem was in Hadleigh, Layham residents walking into Hadleigh were also affected; a parishioner had written to highlight that the footpath was now so overgrown that it was impassable by disability buggies.

• Speeding The report from the working group was noted. Councillor Curran thanked Councillor Hall for facilitating the recent site meeting; however, he said it was frustrating that agreement had not been reached on the best location for the pole at the Mill Lane end of Upper Street. The working group had requested that the pole should be positioned where it would alert and remind drivers of the 30mph speed limit through the village, rather than ‘catching’ motorists – ie education rather than enforcement.

• National Grid proposals The update from the working group was noted. The joint response to the proposals had been submitted; Councillor Ward confirmed that Babergh had also submitted a response. In addition, the working group had produced a specific Layham response which included a letter from the new owners of Benton End, who were in the process of recreating it as a centre for art and horticulture. Councillor Curran said he was concerned that NG was not listening to parishes, or taking their comments seriously; four days after the deadline for responses they had circulated a 270-page scoping document. Councillor Ward said he would take this up with James Cartlidge MP. • Dog refuse bins The suggestion by a councillor that there should be a bin at the bottom of Church Lane was discussed, but it was not considered to be an appropriate location. The Clerk would ask Babergh if the existing bins could be emptied more frequently; she would also research the cost of having an additional bin to be located somewhere else in the village.

• Festival of Suffolk 2022 A letter had been received from the Lord Lieutenant for Suffolk asking parishes to join in with the Festival theme, to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and her 70 years as monarch. It was agreed that the Events Committee would take this forward.

Layham Village Hall Layham Village Hall Committee held its AGM on 21 June 2021. David Pratt (Chairman), Richard Cromwell (Treasurer) and Richard Groom (Vice Chair) had stood down at the 2020 AGM, however, due to Covid, remained in post.

Richard Cranfield, the new Chairman, extended thanks for the eighty years between them that they had devoted to looking after Layham Village Hall, and as a small token of appreciation, presented each of them with a silver Spanish Armada dish engraved with “Layham Village Hall” as a memento.

Dear Sir On behalf of Hadleigh Old School we would like to thank all of the hounds and their humans, young and old, for attending the Holy Hounds of Hadleigh Dog Show on the 11th July in the Deanery Garden. Dear Sir Our town of Hadleigh, Suffolk has expanded over the last few years resulting from more housing and in consequence a larger population. There has been since the easing of lock down a greater flow of road traffic of vehicles, cyclists and of course pedestrians.

Most roads are not particularly wide and pavements in some areas are non existent or narrow which results in those on foot having to use the roadway in which to walk to keep a safe distance from others passing using these footpaths.

I have, when using the roadway to pass pedestrians using the pavement been hooted at by drivers of car travelling fast along the road.

There is an area at the bus station where road traffic is subject to a speed limit of twenty miles per hour. Hadleigh is not a large town and reasonably safe for most pedestrians. However if a twenty miles per hour speed limit for vehicles were applicable to roads in the town then. I believe, we all would feel more confident in being able to use the carriageways when passing our fellow pedestrians on footpaths.

I suggest that a speed limit of twenty miles an hour for vehicles using the town's roads would be far safer than at present. This limit should be applied at all times of day or night. Incidentally the traffic speed limit near Colchester Railway Station is now 20 mph.which limit works reasonably well. Indeed, too, the lower noise produced by vehicles travelling at this reduced speed would be beneficial.

Lately I have used the roadway from Hadleigh to Lower Layham and from there to Shelley on a number of occasions, With the roads in places being narrow and twisty I do feel that the speed limit or limits on the whole of this road needs to be reviewed urgently particularly those parts where a dangerous 60 mph applies at present!

Panto makes a return!

We are happy to announce that Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society is now able to join together once again after this terrible time we have been going though. And we have decided to put on The Wizard of Oz for our next panto in February 2022 in the half term holidays at Elmsett Village Hall. More information on this in later.

We are doing open auditions for casting of this show on September 5th & 12th at the United Reform Church Hadleigh in the marketplace at 3pm. We hope to see our previous actors and new ones on these dates.

We hope that everyone will keep well and safe in the coming months and look forward to seeing you either at the auditions or in February next year at one of the shows.

Volunteers needed for a wild summer of reading!

The Summer Reading The Reading Agency and Libraries Present Challenge is coming and Suffolk Libraries is looking for volunteers to help support the country’s biggest literacy campaign.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a fun way of encouraging children to keep up their reading skills over the long summer holidays. It challenges 4-11 year olds to read six books with stickers and other rewards as Summer Reading incentives.

This year is particularly special Challenge 2021 as it should hopefully mark the return to a more normal summer of activities in libraries after the campaign ran online in 2020. The theme for 2021 is Wild World Heroes with the aim of raising awareness of the environment and the threat to the world’s wildlife.

Volunteers are needed to support children to complete the challenge and chat to them about the books they’ve read. Anyone aged 12 and over can sign up to volunteer and it’s great experience for young people. It’s fun, rewarding and it looks good on your CV. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit suffolklibraries.co.uk-src-2021 or speak to their local library. The summer reading challenge itself will run throughout the summer holidays. Children can sign up for free at their local library and will receive a special collector poster for their stickers.

Paul Howarth, Head of Content and Resource Development at Suffolk Libraries, said: “We’re looking forward to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge which should hopefully see thousands of children returning to our libraries to take part.

After the pandemic it’s more important than ever to encourage younger children not to fall behind with their reading over the summer holidays. Volunteering is a big part of the challenge and it’s very rewarding so we’d love to hear from anyone who’d like to help out at their local library.”

The Summer Reading Challenge is organised by The Reading Agency and delivered in libraries across the country. The Reading Agency have teamed up with the World Wildlife Fund for this year’s challenge which will focus on taking action for nature and tackling real-world environmental issues, from plastic pollution and deforestation to wildlife decline and nature loss.

There will be lists of suggested books to read and illustrations for the challenge have been created by award-winning children’s author and illustrator Heath McKenzie.

Sudbury Dramatic Society presents Joking Apart The exciting news is the next Sudbury Dramatic Society production, Joking Apart

by Alan Ayckbourn is going to be on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 7th September to Saturday 11th September at 7.45pm In January 2020 Sudbury Dramatic Society held auditions for Joking Apart, which at the time, was scheduled for May 2020, but had to be postponed due to Covid 19. Now it is set to be the first SDS full-length onstage Quay Theatre production in September 2021.

Although work had already begun on the 2020 production, one year on, some of the original cast were sadly unable to restart working on Joking Apart, but it has been successfully recast and, now in 2021, rehearsals for the rescheduled production have started in earnest with a strong cast.

Is it possible for friends to be kind to be cruel? Joking Apart takes as its inspiration the study of what happens when kindness can - if not actually kill - then have a highly corrosive effect on others.

The effortlessly successful, charming couple Anthea and Richard are generous to their friends both old and new and, over a period of 12 years, we see just how generous they are in a series of social gatherings in their back garden. A combination of jealousy, envy, inadequacy and unrequited love all afflict their assembled friends whilst Anthea and Richard proceed serenely on, seemingly oblivious to the angst they are inadvertently causing, as the years roll by.

Hopefully restrictions on audience numbers will no longer be in place in September and, fingers crossed, all will be back to relatively ‘normal’. So let nothing stop you from booking your tickets for Joking Apart, a real Sudbury Dramatic Society treat!

Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Hadleigh North Ward – July 2021 Biodiversity and Climate Change Plans - Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have given the green light for £72k - £32,849 and £38,678 respectively - to go towards biodiversity mapping and a tree canopy survey across both districts. The mapping - already underway - covers wildlife corridors and council-owned public realm sites, as well as county wildlife sites and local nature reserves. It is a fundamental step for the councils’ Biodiversity Action Plan as it will determine suitable locations for tree and hedge planting, and identify wildlife habitats and local green spaces.

A tree canopy survey, to be carried out by Treeconomics using field surveying and satellite data, will enable the councils to create a more accurate inventory of their own tree stock. Its aim is to improve tree management and allow for better planning for future tree coverage across the district.

The survey’s findings will be made publicly available via an interactive database, with measures including how much carbon dioxide the trees store or draw from the atmosphere, how the trees help reduce pollution and drain away rainwater. The tree coverage for each ward, the quality and make up of tree coverage, including where possible, the progress of diseases such as ash dieback and chronic oak decline and the trees’ asset value.

CIFCO’s annual business plan is on the agenda for councillors over coming weeks, with the property investment company now having brought in more than £5.4m to help fund services and projects for residents in Babergh and Mid Suffolk.

Property investment company CIFCO, owned by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, is presenting its 4th Annual business plan to Councillors, detailing its performance over the last year and its strategy for the forthcoming year. Last year alone, CIFCO brought in £2.29m to be ploughed back into services for local residents, with the net income produced described as “a significant contribution to the Councils’ budgets”. CIFCO Capital Ltd was established jointly by Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils in 2017 to generate income through property investment.

The properties purchased are as a long-term investment, creating a legacy for future generations, while the income produced from rental return in the meantime can be ploughed back into council services to offset reductions in funding from central government. In Babergh, CIFCO income has formed part of a 2021/22 budget designed to help the council to meet the medium-term financial challenges presented by the pandemic, help meet its climate change ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030 and maintain services for residents and communities.

Applications are now open for Babergh’s Locality Awards Funding – enabling communities to improve facilities, learn new skills and work towards becoming environmentally sustainable.

A total across Babergh and Mid Suffolk of over £314,000 is available for Councillors to allocate to groups and organisations within their ward during the 2021/22 financial year. I am allocated £2,000 for next year and look forward to receiving applications, which can be used for a wide range of projects but must meet the councils’ priorities for grant funding to help i.e., community initiatives that create strong, thriving and connected communities, supporting communities in their response to the climate emergency and promoting resilient and healthy communities.

New Workspaces for Hadleigh - Businesses in Babergh could benefit from new workspaces at a key location in Hadleigh following a decision from Babergh District Council to progress the development of 1.5 acres of allocated employment land. Situated on the A1071 at Ipswich Road, Hadleigh, the land could support a convenience retail until and approximately 10 light industrial or workspace units for a range of uses including by micro and start-up businesses. It is hoped that this employment site could create 50 full time jobs as well as opportunities for young people and apprentices, providing a boost to the local economy post Covid. One million steps in three months Hi I'm Trev Clarke. You may know me as DJ Trev or as the Partridges Ironmongery Manager. Either way in December 20 I was diagnosed with diabetes. To try and raise awareness I decided I would sign up for the one million steps in three months challenge. I'm not a fitness person but do keep active to decided I'd like to raise funds to this great cause.

So as I'm writing I'm 3 weeks in and so far I’m at 215000 steps. If you look at my poster you will see I'm also doing visits with my friend Olaf for a small donation. Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School Sports & Wellbeing Week We had so much Fun! Well, what a super week we have had! The children all enjoyed their sports mornings while earning points for their house cup. We could hear them cheering each other on from the other side of the school! This was followed by each class taking part in their ‘Your Needs Met’ session with Suffolk Minds. We currently have a Wellbeing focus in school and so this training will allow the whole school to share a common language around emotional needs and wellbeing, which will help to support everyone.

We supplemented our Wellbeing focus with a fruit pastel challenge - you can see the concentration on the faces of the children sat with their eyes shut in the picture below.

We also wrote kindness messages to each other, which we made into kindness chains for everyone to take home. The Makaton version of 'The Fight Song' was our next project as we are not currently permitted to sing in school.

This has quickly become one of our school favourites and can be heard playing during our outdoor Celebration Assemblies on a Friday morning apologies to the residents of Hintlesham, as sometimes it can be a little loud to try to match the children's enthusiasm!

The week ended with an archery lesson for each class alongside a range of skills activities. We have certainly packed a lot in.

Orchard Barn News http://www.orchardbarn.org.uk Orchard Barn is celebrating its 14th birthday in September this year, and so this is a perfect time to look back and remind ourselves how far we’ve come!

For those of you who don’t know us, we are based in Ringshall and are a community run Centre for Environmental Education offering practical courses in heritage building, greenwood and rural skills. We are off grid – so no electricity or mains water – and we aim to make the least possible impact on our environment by sourcing and reusing natural local materials for all of our projects.

Back in 2007 our journey began with the purchase of a beautiful but neglected timber framed barn standing in a large, overgrown plot of land. From the beginning we were committed to using only low-tech traditional construction methods and each project would be a focus for teaching these skills to students and volunteers. Progress was inevitably slow, using only traditional hand tools and methods, but by 2009 the main frame of the barn had been repaired, and by 2010 the oak roof frame had been reinstated. In 2011 the roof was finished – 20,000 wooden shingles being made and fitted by 70 volunteers over 9 months.

In 2012, in what had been the old cattle yard, a Craft Barn and Seating Area were built, and the Greenwood Working Area was completed in 2018; all the work being done by students and volunteers.

Our current project is to reinstate the 1580s Long House on our site which had long ago fallen down and become overgrown with brambles, to make it into a teaching space with overnight accommodation for students. As with many things, Covid has delayed progress, but we are hoping to raise the frame in September this year.

In loving memory of Brian Sexton Brian passed away suddenly at his home in Ilford on 1st May 2021, aged 68.

He was born in Hadleigh on 9th November 1952, son of the late Harold and Hilda Sexton. A much loved father and grandfather who is dearly missed by his family.

A private funeral has already taken place at the City of London Crematorium.

100 Years of Scouting in Hadleigh This year the Hadleigh Sea Scout Group will be celebrating 100 years of Scouting in Hadleigh and we hope to be able to arrange suitable celebrations once the current Covid restrictions have been lifted.

In the meantime we would welcome contact and reminiscences from former Scouts, Leaders and Helpers together with any photographs or copy documentation.

We also hope to be able to promote the Annual Duck and Raft Race on the River Brett later this year now that the water level has been restored to its former level and to be able to carry out our usual water based activities such as canoeing and kayaking.

News from St Mary’s C of E Primary School, Hadleigh The summer term has been really busy at St Mary’s. Although school is still a little different from ‘normal’, the children have enjoyed a range of experiences and activities to enrich their learning. All the classes were able to go on trips, either locally or further afield. It was lovely for the children to be able to get out of their classrooms and the school grounds to see a little more of the world!

A major event this term was Sports Day, which was an opportunity to get all the children outside and involved in the excitement of the day. Although the children remained in their class ‘bubbles’, they were able to cheer one another along and they created a brilliant sporting atmosphere. Field events included throwing and agility ladder activities and there were lots of very competitive races. This year, the Blue Bats were the winning team, dethroning the Green Gorillas!

We had lots of maths fun for ‘Buddy’s NSPCC Number Day Challenge’ with lots of activities focused on active learning in maths. In total, we raised £163 for the NSPCC. The children also participated in a reading competition theme day in aid of Home-Start. Older children watched a video of Anthony Horowitz reading an Alex Rider story and then had to create their own ‘super villain’ for the ‘Alex Rider’ series of books by Anthony Horowitz. Younger pupils watched a video of Miranda Raison reading ‘At the End of the Rainbow’ and then had to draw the hero, Alvin, or to create a character that could be Alvin’s friend or family. The competition was great fun and the children were excited to see their creations in the online gallery.

A number of St Mary’s children were shortlisted for prizes and we raised £142 for Home-Start. The children also enjoyed having a non-uniform day to celebrate.

Children’s writing has been inspired by a ‘Character Creations’ competition.

Several children have gone on to read more Alex Rider novels, as well as write their own spy stories.

In the Early Years, the children have been learning all about mini-beasts. There have been lots of opportunities for bug-hunting, exploring and investigating, which has been very exciting! The children also enjoyed growing beans that they took home to continue looking after.

In Year 1, the children have been learning all about castles. The highlight was a visit to Hedingham Castle, where there was a drama re-enactment and the children met soldiers, archers and Lady Oxford. Lady Oxford explained what life in the castle was like, including information about jobs and clothes. Towards the end of the term, the children enjoyed a banquet in school, complete with medieval dancing and jousting! They also wrote letters to the England football team to thank them for inspiring us. In particular, they thanked the players who were brave and took penalties in the final. We were really proud of them all.

In Year 2, the children have been learning about Kenya. This included finding out where it is and investigating the colours of the flag and the shield in the middle.

Everyone enjoyed going on a pretend safari and looking at all of the animals we might see in Kenya, which linked in with the science topic about animals and their habitats. Children then designed their own National Park, making sure the habitats for each animal were within the design, taking into consideration what the animals ate, the need for water and what would provide shelter. Linked work included creating travel brochures to persuade people to visit as well as looking at stories based in Kenya.

Children planted beans in plastic bags to see their roots and shoots grow. They placed their plants in different locations to see if this changed how well they grew.

Some were left in a cupboard; these did grow but they were yellow and thin whereas the ones that had more light were green with fat juicy looking shoots, and lots of roots. They are now having a sunflower competition!

The class went to Hollow Trees Farm for a fun day to enrich the science curriculum. Children looked at the different habitats and food chains on the farm, as well as looking at plants growing...they even picked some sage for the farm shop!

Year 3 have enjoyed a lovely Riverside walk, looking for bugs and plants, followed by a chance to play in the park. The nature walk was linked to an ‘environment’ afternoon, involving looking after plants and potting new flowers. The children also enjoyed their history topic on the Romans, which involved making mosaics, creating PowerPoint presentations and re-enacting Boudicca's battle. Their busy term has also included creating computer animations using the ‘Scratch’ programme,

devising and performing playscripts and writing adventure stories based on ‘Traction Man’.

Year 4 have been learning about the Victorians and had a trip to the Museum of East Anglian Life this term. the trip began with a Victorian School Room experience led by a member of the Museum's staff.

Throughout the term, the children have practised daily ‘mindfulness’.

A lot of the children appreciate this and benefit from the time to pause and settle their thoughts. The techniques they have learned will help them in the future. We are delighted that this term has seen the first opportunity for a long time for children to go and compete against other primary schools. Eight of the Year 4 children participated in a ‘Quad-Kids’ athletics festival at Hadleigh High School. Year 5 also sent a team to the competition, which included sprinting, long jumping and howler throwing. Many thanks to all who were involved in organising this. It was brilliant to be able to enjoy sports events like this once again.

Music has continued to be a regular weekly treat in Year 5. The class are doing an amazing job learning to play several pieces on the recorder. Their knowledge of music notation is growing as is their confidence. The number of children volunteering to play a solo and even improvise is impressive. A concert of all the pieces they have learned has been shared virtually with parents and we’re immensely proud of their achievements.

Gardening is also a real pleasure for many of the children in Year 5. A small group has begun growing some strawberries and carrots and everyone planted up a recycled container to improve the entrance into school for Year 5.

Running and Tag Rugby sessions have also been enjoyed after school or during lunchtimes, demonstrating what a sporty bunch Year 5 are. The majority of children have taken part in the Bikeability scheme, learning about the importance of bike control and how to start navigating roads and traffic more safely. The two courses were filled, so 24 children benefitted from the expertise of the instructors.

The week was finished off by learning about the Tour de France – making it a completely cycle centred week.

The summer term has been full of activities for Year 6. The children attended a multi-skills sports festival at Hadleigh High School. Once again, we are really grateful to everyone involved in putting on this event. The children had a great time and represented the school well through their behaviour and fair-play. The children have also had fun learning about first aid from first responders and completing a chocolate tasting and evaluation. On a local walk, the children learned about the history of Hadleigh, visited the church and enjoyed a picnic lunch. Year 6 worked really hard on rehearsals for their production and they had lots of lines to learn! ‘Reach for the Sky’ was inspired by the Olympics and had lots of positive messages for the children. All the hard work paid off and we were proud of their final performance, which was recorded for parents.

At the end of the year, the children had a trip to Boxford Spinney where they did grass-sledging, campfire activities, cooking their lunch and a variety of outdoor games. This was followed by a barbeque at school in the evening and then a leavers’ service at the church on the last day of term.

Ansell Memories Café We are settling into life back in the Ansell Centre, enjoying being together and sharing lots of fun activities such as singing, quizzes and exercise to music. We have a delicious lunch together, prepared by our wonderful cook Val, and Sue our enthusiastic organizer, always keeps us busy and entertained. We have a great mixture of friendliness and care at the Memories Café. Do pop into the Ansell Centre for a visit between 11.00 am and 3.00 pm any Thursday.

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice I’ve heard that Universal Credit is going to be cut from September. I struggle to get by as it is and I’m really worried that if I lose £20 a week, I’ll get into serious debt. I’m already behind on some of my bills. What can I do to avoid things getting worse?

You’re not alone in this - there is support available.

Firstly, depending on your situation, you might be able to ask to have your Universal Credit paid differently - these are called ‘alternative payment arrangements’. This might be an option if you’re in debt or rent arrears, among other reasons. To apply for an alternative payment arrangement, call the Universal Credit helpline on: 0800 328 5644 If you’re behind on some of your bills, the first step is to make a list of how much you owe and add up how much you need to pay each month.

You now need to prioritise your debts. We have advice on our website to help you do this. Some bills can cause you more problems than others if you don’t pay them. Rent or mortgage arrears, energy bills and council tax are your priority debts as there can be serious consequences if you don’t pay them.

Be sure to get in touch with the organisations you owe money to. Not everyone feels confident to do this, but they might be able to help by letting you pay smaller amounts or taking a break from payments. Many organisations have put in place protections for people who’ve struggled to pay their bills during the pandemic.

The government-backed Breathing Space scheme could also give you extra time.

If you’re eligible, you could get 60 days where your creditors can’t contact you, take action to make you pay, or add interest and charges to your debt. You'll need to get advice from a debt adviser first - they’ll check all your debts to see if they’re covered by the scheme.

Finally, it’s always a good idea to have a budget - take a look at the budgeting tool on our website www.citizensadvice.org.uk and make sure you’re getting all the income you’re entitled to.

Since my last notes our First Team Manager Christian Appleford has stepped down due to work commitments , with the Committee acting quickly to appoint his Assistant Manager Steve Holder into the ‘hot seat’ this will be Steve's first managers role and has already brought in some new players to boost the squad for the coming season. Andy Lambert remains as Reserve Team Manager Matt Norman remains in charge of our Under 18's. We have also formed a new Saturday team ‘Hadleigh United Brettsiders’ they will be playing in the S.I.L Division 3 with Gary Groves as Manager. One player moving on after some 15 years at the Club is Club Captain Kris Rose, he has joined Ipswich Wanderers so that he can spend more time with his young family, we wish him all the best and give him our sincere thanks for his years of service with us.

Our First Team 21/22 season starts with a long trip to newly promoted March Town on 31st July Home matches for August Tues 3rd Home to Whitton Utd; Sat 7th Home to Desbourough (F.A.Cup); Sat 14th Home to Fakenham; Sat 24th Home to Wroxham; Tues 24th Home to Walsham-le-Willows; followed by two away matches at Kirkley & Pakefield, making the same trip the next week to Gorleston, before hosting Long Melford on Tues September 7th.

Businesses encouraged to innovate with launch of new scheme Start-up businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk are being invited to take part in Innovate Local, a pilot scheme designed to help businesses grow and reach new audiences following the impact of Covid-19. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s Innovate Local scheme will offer businesses either use of a market stall in Hadleigh or Stowmarket or working space at an innovation hub in Sudbury or Eye. Business owners who would like showcase their business on a market stall but worry about taking the leap can be part of the pilot Innovate Local scheme at Hadleigh and Stowmarket and receive support and guidance throughout their involvement.

In addition, businesses will benefit from a free pitch at either market for a set period, mentoring and support to running a safe and successful stall, business advice and training opportunities as well as support before and after the pilot.

The first business to come to the stall in Stowmarket will be Sage & Seasalt who will be selling handmade coastal inspired sea glass & clay jewellery, artwork, and home décor from Saturday 24 July. While from 6 August, in Hadleigh market, Suffolk Style will be showcasing their range of Fairtrade, handmade and recycled goods for homes and gardens.

The Innovate Local scheme is part of the councils’ ambitions to support high streets through the Invest in Hadleigh and Vision for Stowmarket programmes to help develop vibrant towns for residents and visitors to live, work and explore.

The market scheme will be run in partnership with Suffolk Market Events who currently manage Hadleigh market on behalf of Babergh District Council as well as several other markets across the county.

Commenting on the scheme, Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council cabinet member for economic growth said: “Hadleigh market is a popular shopping destination and a great place to showcase new businesses. Innovate Local provides a fantastic opportunity for new businesses to explore new opportunities with the support and advice to take their enterprise to the next level.”

The scheme is open to businesses that have been operating for less than a year and do not currently have a place on a market and will be running until the end of December 2021.

Justine Paul, Suffolk Market Events said: “I am very excited by the opportunity that the Innovate Local initiative is bringing to new businesses. It can be overwhelming taking your first steps on a market, and this programme will provide the businesses with the support and guidance to get them off the ground.”

In addition to the market stalls, the Innovate Local programme will be opening an innovation hub in Eye and a pop-up hub in Sudbury later this year.

The Innovate Local Hubs will offer small business owners and entrepreneurs with access to a working space, mentoring programme as well as targeted business advice and training opportunities.

The hubs are being delivered in partnership with the Innovation Labs and businesses using either of the hubs in Eye or Sudbury will be able to use Innovation Labs collaborative working space based in Stowmarket.

The Innovate Local scheme is being funded from the Suffolk Inclusive Growth Investment Fund (SIGIF) and is part of a wider initiative to support businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk. Other activities include the launch of the successful Virtual High Street and the roll out a digital skills programme.

Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Suffolk Owl Sanctuary Visit Children in Goldcrest and Robin class enjoyed a trip to the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on Tuesday 22nd June.

They had a wonderful day whilst enjoying minibeast hunts and the owl flying display.

Baylham Rare Breeds Farm Visit Children in Kingfisher class enjoyed a trip to Baylham Rare Breeds Farm on Thursday 24th June. They toured the farm and visited all of the animals and took part in some fire building.

Arger Fen Trip Year 5 pupils enjoyed another summer term visit to Arger Fen. They took part in lots of forest school activities. The weather was kind to them on both occasions.

Sponsored by Celotex Home has definitely been where the heart is for our 1st XI this season, as they remain unbeaten at the Meadow, with two recent wins over Mistley and league leaders Witham being the highlights. Our overseas player Kudzai Maunze has had a difficult season so far, but his struggle for runs came to an end against Mistley with 108 not out. Mistley looked to be cruising towards our total of 306 but a late flurry of wickets from Oliver Stace and a brilliant catch from Marlon Dias was enough to turn the tide. Not many teams have scored 300 at Hadleigh and lost! The win over Witham showed the character of the team too, as we recovered from 69-5 to post 208 and then defended it against by far the best side in Division 1. Witham will be hard to catch though, which sadly cannot be said for Covid-19, which is currently running through many clubs. It is ironic that just as we are able to open up our club as normal, the likelihood is that matches will be cancelled due to positive tests and teams self-isolating.

The 2nds will be hoping their run-in is not too badly affected, as they are in the mix for promotion from Division 5. They have crucial games coming up against leaders Battisford and Needham Market which they will be desperately hoping to play.

Performance of the month probably came in a defeat, however, as 13-year-old Toby Toombs made his maiden 50 for the club against Great Bromley while all else fell around him. 14-year-old Matthew Clark has also made huge progress this season and bowled almost an unplayable spell at Stowupland. On a Sunday there hasn't been too much to report, but at Horringer we witnessed one of the great HCC debuts as 12-year-old Jack Auld, given special dispensation to play in open age cricket, showed why he is such a prospect by claiming five wickets and a run out (a fine achievement at any time for a seam bowler, but certainly on the hottest day of the year). The Ladies have not had too much cricket lately, but Frankie Stenning continued her fine form with 36 not out against Ipswich & East Suffolk. Our Under-13s did brilliantly to reach their final but Copdock were too strong on the day, but can hold their heads high.

The club are hosting several county matches in late July and August, including the Suffolk Men's 2nd XI on August 9th against Hertfordshire, and Suffolk Under-15 Boys versus Cambridgeshire on August 25-26. This is the showpiece of the club's first cricket week for some time, with a T20 against Tendring Park on August 24 and the Hadleigh Hundred on Friday August 27, our first attempt at the muchmaligned/anticipated (delete as appropriate) format that is set to dominate the cricket world over the next month.

My family are also hosting a match in memory of my father on Sunday August 29th, and I have to say, some legends will be back on the Meadow that day! Let's hope the weather stays fine for what we hope will be a fitting tribute to Dad's contribution to the club over more than 50 years.

The Desert Rats Association Memorial Day and Church Service Following up on last month’s piece on The Desert Rats Association I would like to update you on how the Memorial Day and Church Service went on 11th July 2021.

As you all will know, like all charities our fundraising has been severely hit by the restrictions that have been necessary throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and our Memorial Day and Church Service for 2020 had to be cancelled along with all other fund raising events; until just recently. This year the day had to be moved from its usual slot in June to later in the year to take into account current Government regulations.

The number of exhibitors, stalls and stands who turned out to support the event was beyond our expectations; only to be outdone by the amount of visitors throughout the day. The weather was very kind to us and we managed to raise just under £1,500 which will help significantly to our goal of placing a memorial to The Desert Rats Association at the National Memorial Arboretum. A flavour of the day is encapsulated in these photos.

Just to recap, the Association encompasses all those who served in the 7th Armoured Division or 4th/7th Armoured Brigades or are serving now in the 4th Infantry Brigade (The Black Rats) or 7th Infantry Brigade (the Desert Rats) and also the wider North Africa campaign and the recent Gulf Wars and conflicts.

Since 2016 the Association has been quietly working towards erecting a memorial to all “Desert Rats” at the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) in Staffordshire. A suitable site has been negotiated with the NMA and the 7th Armoured Division memorial from Sandhurst has been moved for refurbishment prior to it becoming part of the site at the NMA. The centrepiece for the site will be a large steel Desert Rat, the Jerboa sitting on a carved sandstone plinth. A summary of the project can be found at http://www.desertrats.org.uk/.

The Association also has a small museum and a memorial (a Cromwell tank) at Mundford in Thetford Forest which is where the 7th Armoured Division trained in 1944 and where the Memorial Day was held.

Our next local event is a Fun Dog Show being held on Sunday 29th August on Narborough Village Green which is in Chalk Lane, Narborough, Norfolk PE32 1SR. If anyone is interested we are still seeking sponsorship for some classes at £10 a class. Sponsors name (and logo, if applicable) will feature on the tails of the rosettes for their chosen class. The cost for entering your dog is £2.50 per class (erroneously quoted at £2.00 last month, many apologies). It is a fun day out for you and your pooch, please do try and come along. A poster for the event appears elsewhere in this magazine.

Lastly, I mentioned our aim to put a memorial in the National Memorial Arboretum.

So far the funding for this has been raised by individuals at numerous events and shows (when we were allowed to hold them) and from personal donations. We are still a bit short of our £90,000 total and, so, if they are any individuals or businesses out there who would like to donate, and we sincerely hope you might like to do so, please contact me for more information on desertratsassoc.secretary@gmail.com.

News from Stoke by Nayland England Golf Women’s Medal Regional Final – 23 June 2021 Katie Clark represented Stoke by Nayland at Ely City GC. A field of 55 women from all over the Eastern region competed on a beautifully prepared course on a very warm day. The competitors qualified by having the 4 best medal scores attheir club in the previous year.

For the first time Stableford scoring was used and Katie along with her caddy, husband Mark, went round in level par, giving her 36 points. An early tee time meant a long wait but when all the scores came in Katie finished in first place and was thrilled to win the Eastern Regional final.

Throughout the country there are 6 regional finals with the top 10 in each region going Katie Clark forward. Katie will now go on to compete at Woodhall Spa in August at the England GolfWomen’s National Final.

Bronze Match Win!! - Another win for Stoke By Nayland Bronze team who won their final round against Three Rivers Golf Club. A grey drizzly day greeted the members of Stoke by Nayland’s Bronze team as they gathered for their final league match against ladies from Three Rivers Golf Club. Fortunately the forecast proved to be wrong and after a short shower the sun shone for most of the round.

After introductions, coffee and bacon rolls the players set off.

First out was Sue Spittlehouse who had a very challenging game which she finally lost 3&2.

Next out Catriona Chaplin, in fine form after her success in Thursday’s ladies competition, made short work of defeating her opponent 7&6. Lesley Hitchcock had a very even match, reaching the turn all square, but after losing the tenth raised her game, winning the next five holes to finish 4&3.Clare Nixon, who was 4up at the turn, completed her match Team Captain Lesley Hitchcock, on the thirteenth green with a Sue Spittlehouse, Clare Nixon, 6&5 win. Finally, Hilary Cairns, Hilary Cairns and Catriona Chaplin. who had been down much of the match, brought it back with a superb putt on sixteen to put her in contention. After seventeen they were all square with one to play. Sadly an errant chip shot on eighteen meant a win for the opposition, but a thoroughly enjoyable match had been played. Ladies Captain Janet Hodge and Past Captain Jane Golding supported the team and provided refreshments at the halfway stage.

Windfall Trophy - Stoke by Nayland Ladies played for the Windfall Trophy on Thursday 24th June on the Gainsborough course. The Stableford Trophy competition was won by Sue Spittlehouse who had her best game of the year so far coming in with 39pts to win ocb to Catriona Chaplin also with 39pts who also beat Barbara Jones on 39pts! Trisch Jackson had 21pts to win the best front 9 and Alison Jennings had the best back 9 score with 20pts.

Stoke by Nayland Ladies Pro Am - Stoke by Nayland Ladies held a Pro Am on Thursday 1st July on the Gainsborough course in beautiful sunshine, we had 12 teams of 3 ladies and a Pro with best two scores to count.

The winning team were Lesley Garnett, Sybil Paton, Catriona Chaplin and Professional Roly Hitchcock with a score of 92points. In second place with 90points were Simon Dainty’s team, Corinne Jackson, Katie Clark and Clare Nixon. Pamela Randle had nearest the pin on the 11th hole.

The winning Pro was Simon Dainty with a gross 68, 2nd Jamie Moul with a gross 70, Callum Hensby 3rd ocb with 71.

The Mixed Medal - On Saturday 10th July the men & ladies of Stoke-by-Nayland GC competed against one another in the mixed medal. It was warm and a little humid but the course still had moisture from recent rainfall.

The Constable course was used for this event with the men off the white tees and the ladies off the yellows.

Division 1 winner was Greg Smith who shot an incredible 642=62 which we believe could be the new course record. Greg completed his 18 holes without dropping a shot! 8 birdies and 10 pars took him clear of the field by 7 shots! 2nd place was Ian McKay with 77-8=69 and 3rd was Mark Chaplin shooting 80-10=70 Division 2 was won by Darren Russell with a round of 85-12=73 which included 8 pars. Darren Selley lost ocb with the same 85-12=73 and 3rd Stephen Hewett 9115=76 ocb from 3 other players.

Division 3 saw Tony Emms shoot 96-29=67 from Stephen Clark 86-17=69 with Bill Wardle 3rd on 92-20=72 ocb from Darren Kempster also on net 72.
