‘Antiques Roadshow’ with a twist!

Hadleigh Remembers is to hold an ‘Antiques Roadshow’ with a twist following on from the success of the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project, which is still ongoing by the way. The Hadleigh RBL has widened its research to include the stories behind the 39 names listed on the town’s WW2 memorial wall and the history of the local RBL Branch. This year sees the 75th anniversary of the end of WW2 and next year sees the centenary of the RBL and so now seems like a good time to capture these stories and preserve them forever in our digital archive on our website. At the moment we know relatively little about the names on the WW2 memorial wall, but we are sure that their stories are out there and that relatives will probably still have photographs, letters, diaries, artefacts, etc.

Likewise, we know many people have fond memories of the Hadleigh RBL but the story of the last 100 years has never been documented.

So we are asking the community to share their stories and artefacts and to help us create a lasting digital archive.

The good thing about creating a digital archive is that all we need is photographs of the artefacts and the relatives can keep hold of their treasured family keepsakes. Once we have captured the images and the stories, they will be preserved forever.

Earlier this year we commemorated VE Day 75, albeit from our lockdown homes. At 11:00 on Saturday 15 August the RBL is planning to have a short service at the war memorial to mark VJ Day 75. Clearly, this will be subject to any Covid restrictions and may be very limited. This service will be followed by an ‘antiques roadshow’ style fair in St Mary’s Church where we are inviting members of the community to bring along their old photos, medals, letters, diaries, uniform or any artefacts that may relate to either WW1, WW2 or the history of the Hadleigh RBL. We will have experts on hand to discuss the items and of course we would like to photograph them for the archive.

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 59 (August – September 2020) Behind the United Reform Church, Ansell Centre in The Market Place forms a wonderful community centre Issue 59 August - September 2020 Price £4 for many activities. It was originally built in 1863 by John Ansell (1779-1863) as Hadleigh’s British Elementary School. In 1841, he had earlier financed its predecessor in Duke Street, which eventually became too small to accommodate all children wanting to attend.

With the help of a photographic survey carried out in the 1960s, Nigel Crisp now tells the story of this earlier school in the occasional series ‘Lost buildings’.

Two of the Hadleigh characters that are featured in this issue experienced and died from the effects of previous epidemics. Jeff Ward reminds us that not all names on Hadleigh War Memorial in High Street are of men in the armed forces. Having been a Christian missionary in China, Hadleigh-born Revd John Bacon (1882-1918) was working with the non-combatant Labour Corps in France when he died of ‘Spanish’ flu, the great pandemic that took so many people at the end of the Great War. Much earlier, William Glanfield (1577-1637) died as a victim of plague, this particular visitation bringing much upheaval to the town’s economy. Alone and dying, he managed to write his last will and testament in order to make the tasks following his death as easy as possible for his only child Elizabeth and her husband Thomas Alabaster.

Hadleigh Town Council, Hadleigh Society and other interested parties are joining forces to produce Hadleigh Local List. Whereas listed buildings are graded for their architectural and / or historical interest, there are many other features in the parish that are not so old but which need to be acknowledged as contributing aesthetically, culturally and / or historically to the townscape. There is a form on Hadleigh Society’s website for everyone to make nominations. The Hadleigh Historian has suggested six features for consideration, the favourite being Hadleigh Community Primary School in Station Road. Erected in 1904, the red brick building began life as a non-denominational elementary school, moved on after the Butler Education Act of 1944 to become a Secondary Modern and since 1972, has functioned as a primary school with facilities for nursery education. Of course, it has undergone several additions over the years and the interior of the original building has been remodelled. A site where thousands of children have been taught not just from Hadleigh but also from surrounding villages. I started teaching there in 1972 and have very happy memories of both staff and 700 pupils during my 23 years.

Hadleigh Town Council Cycling Working Group Launched Immediately prior to the COVID19 outbreak, Hadleigh Cycling Club had organised an event at the Ansell Centre to encourage everyone to get out on bikes this summer. The event was cancelled, but with the Government’s instruction to exercise, we saw many more cyclists on the roads and the Railway Walk. To support this, the Club published short routes on lightly-trafficked roads on our website.

The Club approached the Town Council and presented some ideas for supporting cycling in the town. We think that there is scope for increasing the number of everyday cyclists, commuting cyclists, leisure and touring cyclists (we are on a Sustrans’ route) and maintain the recent converts. The Club also pointed out the magnificent efforts of the Hadleigh Foodbank in purchasing bikes and loaning them to families and individuals.

The Town Council has responded positively and a working group has been set up to consider how we market “cycling for all”, provide additional cycle parking and work with local businesses.

On a sad note, the Club has been notified that Colin Vint, who many Hadleigh and Boxford riders will have known, passed away recently. The Club has offered sincere condolences to his family. Colin was one of the riders who rode from London to Paris in 24 hours 5 years ago. As well as being a kind and friendly chap, he was always willing to help out, especially in the early years of the Gayford Flyer sportive.

Finally, why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 8am, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles, with a café stop.

We were hoping to be able to invite five members of the Cafe to have coffee and cake in the URC garden on Thursday 16th July, but unfortunately, due to the weather, we had to cancel at the last minute. As you can see in the photo, Eileen didn’t get the cancellation message so turned up and had a lovely chat with Sue in the sensory garden. Luckily, it had stopped raining by then!

The other photograph shows Caroline outside her home with the banner she has made ready for when we do finally get together again. We hope to have regular small gatherings in the garden as we try to open the Memories Cafe again, albeit on a very small scale.

We will be continuing to deliver newsletters and cakes to all the members who aren’t able to join us in the garden.

Lunch Clubs Unbelievably, our lunch clubs haven’t been able to meet since the first week in March. All the store cupboard food had been bought ready for the lunch club which was supposed to happen on 18th when Boris announced the start of lockdown.

Fortunately, we hadn’t bought the sausages!!

We have been thinking about how we might be able to organise outdoor coffee mornings or afternoon teas instead of lunches during these difficult days. We know everyone is particularly missing the social side of lunch clubs. All our members will be contacted shortly to ask them what they think, though we are aware that lots of people still feel nervous about venturing out and mixing with others.

Cinema Unfortunately, we won’t be able to show any films in the near future. With social distancing, we wouldn’t be able to accommodate enough people to cover the cost of the film licence. However, we are hoping that as lockdown eases, it might be possible to organise something. We will keep you updated in the Community News and you can also check our website.

News from Hadleigh Old School Hadleigh Old School is the new name for the former school and revived concert hall in Bridge Street run by Ian Grutchfield and Matthew Hodges.

The first event will be Memories of the Old School, an open day for the public to visit on Saturday 12th September 2020.

We are located at 3-5 Bridge Street at the north end of the town. We will publicise the day under the national banner scheme Heritage Open Days and follow their guidelines.

Entry will be free. Refreshments will raise money for heritage schemes such as St Mary’s/Deanery Tower. Historically Hadleigh Old School was once operated by St Mary’s diocese, so we come full circle! The day is a chance for former pupils of the boys’ school to visit their old classroom. It is also an opportunity for music fans of the concerts and operas of more recent times. The building dates from the Victorian era and was a school until the end of the 1960s, it was then converted into a music venue for the four decades.

Records of the time when 5 Bridge Street was a school are stored in public archives. It is the day to day memories of school life that interest us, ie what it was it like to attend in the first half of the twentieth century.

We have the advantage of a large archive of files from recent arts and musical activity at the Old School. However, there are gaps – we do not have an original music recording of the Catchpole Opera (McIntosh) nor a list of paintings exhibited or talk transcript for A Fascination of Flowers (Morris/Chatto). Both occurred in the 1970s.

Thank you to those who have already written to us with recollections or visited and shared their stories of school life or the Brett Valley Society of the Arts.

Everyone is welcome - we cannot anticipate demand in these uncertain times - if we are busy then former pupils and their families, will be able to Q jump. Please mark the date, Saturday 12th September 2020, in your diary and look out for more details on timings and accessibility in next month’s edition of this publication.

Who wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be sickened by the idea of eating infected chicken injected with antibiotics and washed in chlorine, hormone-treated beef, and milk polluted by pesticides?

Who would want to eat cereal, fruit and vegetables coated in any of the 70 toxic chemicals potentially used in US farms and currently banned in the UK? Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s talk about chlorine: chlorine-rinsed bagged salads are common in the UK, and low levels are used to disinfect drinking and bathing waters. But chlorine washing of meat was banned in 1997, as it can be a way of compensating for unacceptable animal welfare and hygiene standards - such as dirty or over-crowded abattoirs. For example, chlorine is good at removing odours and surface slime, meaning meat can be passed off as fresh for much longer than it should.

As Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned, drugresistant diseases are as big a threat to humanity as Climate Change; he called for immediate action to cut the inappropriate use of antibiotics, which can be added to animal feed to promote growth â&#x20AC;&#x201C; antibiotic use in the USA can be 16 times higher than in the UK. Moreover around 30% of our food is eaten in the public sector or hospitality settings, so the origins of these foods are unknown to the consumer who canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t check the ingredients on labels. Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t food safety even more vital now weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in the grip of a pandemic? It appears, the Covid 19 virus is transmitted to humans from infected animals, after they enter the food chain or are illegally trafficked.

East Anglian farmers produce around a quarter of the UK's chicken, most reared to Red Tractor assurance standards. NFU deputy president Guy Smith said British farmers "will simply not be able to compete" against farmers producing cheap meat and dairy to lower standards. Abandoning these standards could finish off many local farming businesses, already struggling to find British labour, grappling with climate/ environmental damage, and surviving on reducing income.

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice Last month I signed up to Universal Credit for the first time, after I was made redundant. I am looking for a new job but I’m not sure if there’s anything more I need to do to ensure I keep getting Universal Credit?

When you apply for Universal Credit you’ll agree a Claimant Commitment with your work coach. A Claimant Commitment is a record of the responsibilities that you have accepted to receive Universal Credit payments. Your claimant commitment will be updated each time you see your work coach.

When you agree to your Claimant Commitment you will be put into one of four work-related activity groups (sometimes called “conditionality” groups). These set out the tasks you’re expected to complete in order to receive your full benefit payment. You can check which group you’re in by logging into your Universal Credit account online and checking your Claimant Commitment. If you’re not online, you will have been provided with a paper copy of your Claimant Commitment.

This will tell you which group you’re in and what tasks you'll have to do regularly to get Universal Credit. These tasks could include writing your CV, signing up for job alerts or applying for vacancies.

In order to show how you have completed the to-do list set out in your Claimant Commitment, you should keep a record of the tasks you’ve completed and how long they took in your Universal Credit online journal, or in a diary if you’re not online.

Some claimants, mainly those who have applied for Universal Credit for the first time since the outbreak of COVID-19, may not have a Claimant Commitment yet.

Those who claimed before the outbreak, will have had their Claimant Commitment suspended during the outbreak and had no work-related requirements imposed.

From 1 July The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has said it will be calling all claimants to help them to prepare for work, so people should expect to be contacted to set up the Claimant Commitment. They do not need to contact the Department for Work and Pensions in the meantime.

The DWP has said that they will take a common-sense approach to work-related requirements and that those who are shielding, have childcare responsibilities because of COVID restrictions, etc. will have their Claimant Commitment tailored to reflect their circumstances.

We have recently received a wide range of new clothing. These pieces include cotton and linen tops for the hotter weather, as well as lightweight jumpers for the cooler days and evenings. French’s Care Haven I hope all of our readers have stayed in good health, physically and mentally throughout the changes we have had to get use to.

French’s are one of the Animal Rescue Charities that have found the lack of financial support hard, with no grants or government help coming our way, along with no fund raising events, it is really hard and could leave us bordering on a disaster, we need financial help. This is where I thank so so much, those monthly sponsors for supporting one of our horses or donkeys, but we need a few more people to come on board with us and our beautiful animals. You are very welcome to come along and choose a Donkey or horse you like and know you are helping feed and care for that animal. Please make an appointment, visit us and choose which animal you bond with and would like to help.

Here is a picture of Lucy; French’s therapy dog, Lucy was treated to a grooming session after the lockdown was lifted. She looks gorgeous and came back with her own doggie bandana. Huge thank you to Pawtique in Ipswich for taking such good care of our girl.

We have managed to put in place all the portable shelters that our animals needed, which has taken the last 9 months. We are now calling out for a large garden summer house, if you know of anyone who can help us, please call me, my number and email are below. Do you know a business that could help our Charity? The summerhouse is needed for our volunteers and the vulnerable young people we help, so they have a place to go and sit undercover to have their lunch and drinks. Our volunteers are all good at keeping their distance from one another and doing what is required to stay safe, The maximum people we have helping on a day is 6 people. Our helper’s day is on a Wednesday and on other days the maximum people attending is usually 2. Could you offer us a couple of hours help and be one of the two people? Being outdoors in a beautiful natural setting with only one or two people at the farm, working with or around the animals, is something that is good for your health, soul and mind, along with the physical benefits of working in the open countryside. Lucy is generally in the mix of things as well, as she likes to be involved, along with 3 of our horses that we call the 3 musketeers. The 3 musketeers are so nosy, they have their faces literally on everything you do, they are funny to watch. We have another field with our cute little ponies, if you prefer not having the horse’s that close helping you.

A big thank you goes out to our new Saturday Volunteer from Hadleigh, Sharon who is a great help and our other Hadleigh resident, mid week helper Emily, who is an air hostess that has been furloughed. Thanks to local Sue for her donation of hay and a thank you to Debbie and Graham for helping us pick up and unload some things we had in storage. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre It seems strange to be wishing you all a happy holiday since we have been on holiday for 4 long months already! In August the Centre will hold its delayed AGM. At this meeting the management committee will be planning how to reopen for our riders in September. It’s going to be quite a challenge: we’ll certainly rise to it. In case you will all be wearing face masks by then the ponies want to show nonchalant they are about them: Tilly and Belle go about their business quite happily in theirs.

Did you know that I’ve been at the Centre for 13 years now?

I, and my ancient friend BABS, know we are integral to the therapy the Centre offers, and provided we get our annuall service, we don’t really age.

However the same can’t be said for the live horses and ponies. The make up of the herd inevitably has to change as some of the horses need to retire from active work.

We are wondering whether the knock on effect of this Corona-19 pandemic and the subsequent loss of many incomes has led some horse owners to rethink their options? The Shelley Centre has given many years of comfortable living to several early ‘retired’ horses and ponies, whose owners have had to find new homes for them for many different reasons. So if any readers out there are contemplating a new approach to their horse ownership, we’d love to be able to discuss options with you. Lyn Bensusan, our mum, is a very experienced horse woman and always puts our health and well being above everything. The herd is really well looked after by an able-bodied team, keeping all the horses and ponies fit and mentally stimulated. (See the lovely photo of Bryn out on a hack) Our fields are on the slope of a hill which the ponies like, they live out all year round, only coming in to the stables for a rest when necessary, or to be got ready for the day’s work. The equine team feels itself lucky to be here, and it looks forward to welcoming new recruits to the herd when our dear ‘pensioners’ depart.

Rotary Review Since the last report and at the time of writing this the Club has held 2 fairly successful Zoom meetings and a third is scheduled for about a weeks time. Approximately half the members have joined the meetings and at the last one which was the Annual Club Assembly two Rotary Assistant District Governors also attended.Club Assembly is always held just before the beginning of the new Rotary year starting on 1st July in order that the incoming President may outline his programme for the year. Of course, this has been particularly difficult for President Ian Burne in these uncertain times. He placed the emphasis on increasing membership but even this is a hard task when the Club is only meeting on line and is unable to hold traditional fund raising events. He will be looking at various ways of attracting new members perhaps by varying the type of meeting and finding innovative ways of fundraising. Initially, however, it is hoped to resume the normal fortnightly lunches as soon as it is safely possible. The informal coffee mornings may recommence in August but lunches take a little longer. He hoped that the traditional Christmas collection will take place as well as some social events around the end of the year as well but nothing is certain at present.

Meanwhile the Club has been continuing to help local charities and organisations as best it can with limited funds. So far donations have gone to Hadleigh Foodbank, Hadleigh Hanging Baskets, St Elizabeth Hospice and EACH. Whilst we are not meeting for lunch members will continue to donate lunch costs to Charitable causes.

With regard to future meetings, it is accepted that the Club may have to vary the format more to attract new members - Zoom meetings may continue, coffee morning meetings may be given more importance and even take place at different times of the day. Some meetings may be held without a meal.

There are many options available but would have to be acceptable to existing and new members alike.

Jemma Louise Gates Helen, Vince and Kevin Gates would like to thank everyone for their amazing love and kindness since Jemma passed away on 25th April 2020 from COVID-19, she was only 35 years old.

Councils progress plan for thriving communities Councillors are set to consider the timetable for the Joint Local Plan – detailing how Babergh and Mid Suffolk will work with their communities to deliver much needed housing and employment between now and 2037.

It is proposed that the next iteration of Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s Joint Local Plan will be published in the autumn. This Joint Local Plan will clarify how the Councils propose to meet the housing targets set by Government and, following public consultation, detail how and where development should take place – ensuring suitable and sustainable homes are built in the right places; and supporting Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s ambitions to build great communities with bright and healthy futures.

Following public consultation last year – enabling local businesses and residents to have their say – there has been ongoing review of the plan with officers and Councillors. The Councils are now drafting the next version of the plan and updating evidence and appraisals to ensure the final Joint Local Plan promotes sustainable development, reflects the public feedback, and considers the potential impact of Covid-19, as well as social, environmental and economic aspects.

If the Local Development Scheme timetable is agreed by Babergh District Council on July 21 and Mid Suffolk District Council on July 23, then the revised draft Joint Local Plan should be published in Autumn 2020. The final Joint Local Plan will be formally adopted by the Councils following examination by a Planning Inspector.

The Local Development Scheme also sets out a proposed timetable for a review of the current Community Infrastructure Levy rates, which are collected from developers when they build new properties. This will ensure sufficient funding is made available to enable the additional infrastructure needed to support the development proposed by the Joint Local Plan.

Since the start of the year, communities across Babergh and Mid Suffolk have received in excess of £4.5 million in Community Infrastructure Levy – including over £3 million for school expansions – and funding for community led projects ranging from village hall refurbishments to new children’s play areas.

Cllr Clive Arthey, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for Planning said: “Development is incredibly important to us all, and particularly to our communities where housing growth can have a significant impact on their facilities and the landscape.

“Whilst we cannot control housing targets set by Government, we can continue to work with Babergh residents to influence where these developments are located, supporting our ambition for people to be proud to call our communities home.

“It has taken some time to prepare the Joint Local Plan, and we are now a step closer to providing clarity and reassurance about when and where required new homes will be built.”

Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Hadleigh North Ward - July, 2020 Firstly I was very pleased to support Dr Lyon’s bid on behalf of Hadleigh Medical Centres application for a valid bid for funding from the CIL Infrastructure Fund, to convert the audiology and storage room into a clinical room at the Hadleigh Heath Centre. This bid has been made by the Suffolk and North East Essex CCG, the amount applied for is £3,536.00. I hope that others will be encouraged to make similar applications. This application will significantly improve the way the centre operates.

Babergh agreed to an £180,000 upgrade in CCTV provision. Babergh District Council worked with Suffolk Police, Hadleigh and Town Councils on proposals for a fully compliant, updated CCTV system for Hadleigh and Sudbury. The Conservatives have lobbied for a long time and delighted that this will be implemented locally. Babergh will transfer CCTV monitoring and maintenance arrangements to neighbouring authority West Suffolk Council – allowing images to be monitored 24/7 in a purpose built CCTV control room, and enabling defective equipment to be repaired promptly. Hadleigh Town Council have kindly agreed to making a financial contribution to the ongoing costs associated with monitoring. Pending approval, future Community Infrastructure Levy contributions - collected from developers when they build new homes in the district - will provide funding to upgrade the CCTV to a fully digital wireless system, once a system specification has been agreed.

I shall be very much keeping in close touch with the final phase of the landscaping to ensure this area properly complies with the original plans for all to enjoy. The bridge a gift to the wider community will much enhance the enjoyment of the area.

One Ways System Proposal - Clarification At the Hadleigh Full Council 16th July, Cllr Talbot put on the agenda “To consider a response to a letter in the Hadleigh Community News by District Councillor Sian Dawson”. I have been asked to comment. His unfortunate error was not with reference to my personal letter in respect of my father’s recent death. Cllr Talbot meant to refer to my report regarding the one way system! Therefore, I will clarify as follows: “Suffolk County Council originally proposed the one-way system to go clockwise, (south to north), as that was what we had assumed would be preferred locally. As this is a temporary measure, SCC have not objected to it being trialled the way the town council propose. (If, for arguments sake, it was to be considered permanently, we might take a different view)”.

The Leader of Babergh District Council John Ward comments “We have urged, as part of our guidelines to communities, that Hadleigh Town Council should engage with businesses and residents to ensure that they are aware of what is being proposed, but not to consult for feedback on the temporary one way proposals. I understand that, due to internal differences at HTC, up to now they haven’t been able to agree on what to request of SCC”.

For clarification, HTC have proceeded with a leaflet consultation on the temporary one way against advice. I hope that we can conclude, when HTC resolve internal differences, that Suffolk County Council will implement the temporary one way system. I will support any decision taken by HTC, but trust professional advice given by Highways will to be taken into consideration.

Babergh Cabinets have approved a raft of environmental measures to help the councils achieve their ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

This decision will now form the councils’ first Carbon Reduction Management Plan, setting out how they aim to fulfil their ambitions of becoming carbon neutral within the next ten years. These are the first steps in achieving the long term objective to reduce the councils’ current emissions of approximately 5,452 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year and looking into how best to invest in order to reduce this to net zero. I will summarise as follow some of the initiatives as we move forward: • We will be exploring Babergh’s owned or controlled commercial estates, for renewable energy generation schemes, solar ports and battery storage.

• We will be exploring the Babergh’s renewable energy generation schemes.

Moving towards both green tariff energy.

• Transitioning existing diesel-powered waste and fleet vehicles to a more sustainable fuel.

• Identifying further efficiencies and opportunities for waste collections.

• Introducing an electric vehicle charging plan.

• Actively encouraging a digital-first culture exploring incentives to reduce staff mileage.

• Increasing tree and hedgerow planting and coverage across the district • Ensuring new and current council housing is efficient and environmentally friendly as possible.

• Working with partners to improve the infrastructure.

Choosing a new mattress can seem like a daunting task, but Chloe from the Bed Factory shares her advice to help you along your way to a better night’s sleep!

Life expectancy of mattresses On average, mattresses tend to have a life of anything between 5-14 years depending on the quality of the materials used in the manufacturing process and how often it’s used. Hand side stitched mattresses tend to have a longer life expectancy due to all of the fillings being pulled in around the edges.

What type of mattress should you get?

There is no hard and fast rule to which mattress type you should buy, you just need to find the one that suits you. We always recommend visiting a bed showroom and having a lay-down as one person’s definition of firm or soft is different to the next person’s. You will typically have a choice between memory, open coil and pocket sprung mattresses: each have their own characteristics so the best way to find what you like is to have a lay-down and test it out!

Buy base and mattress together?

Divan bases last on average the life of two mattresses, however when it comes to frames we would recommend a new frame to be purchased with a new mattress in case the frame has deteriorated over time. We always recommend that when buying a mattress it is tried on the same type of base or frame that it will be going on to.

What should i pay for a good mattress?

Children's mattresses can be purchased for under £100, however for two adults on a bed used every night you really need to start looking at spending from £210.

Although you do get what you pay for, the most expensive is not always best and when finding the perfect mattress: it really is down to the needs of the individual, some people may find their perfect mattress at say £575 and do not like the support/feel of the dearer mattresses. Remember that for every £100 you spend on a new bed, it equals an investment of just 2.7p a night (assuming a lifespan of seven years).

Hadleigh Library: Certainty and change August has rolled round once more and for me it heralds some of the best things of the year– and by that, I mean, food. I am perhaps not in huge company when I say that I love the time when you can feel autumn beginning to send out its signals to say that it is on the way. For me, one of the things I always look forward to are the fruits and vegetables that are just right or nearly so, in these months.

Suffolk is a wonderful county to live in and the chances are many of you, like me, will head out on walks and often return with a handful, pocketful or tubful of hedgerow blackberries.

I am currently reading a book called, ‘All Among the Barley,’ by Melissa Harrison.

It is set in rural East Anglia in the 1930’s and although, of course, things were incredibly different then, it is certainly evocative of the scenes you can still see when going for a walk now through our beautiful countryside. Melissa Harrison is a nature writer and novelist I very much enjoy and if you think you’d like to read this title, it is available from Suffolk Libraries as a physical book as well as an ebook.

Through the strangeness of this year, I feel there is some comfort in watching nature carrying on as normal – let’s face it, not much else has been able to. But all of us have, and are, adapting and we at the library want to say thank you to everyone who has continued to support us by using our services. I am writing in response to the letter last month regarding Murfield Meadow. My husband and I are regular weekly users of Murfield Meadow with our two dogs, one of our dogs we cannot let off the lead so to see him running freely clearly enjoying himself is sheer joy. We were disappointed and surprised that it was felt right to publicly share such personal views, we often walk near the meadow and see it occupied and have not heard any barking.

Murfield Meadow is a fantastic facility for Hadleigh and surrounding areas, run very efficiently and professionally by owners that care for their clients and most importantly the dogs that greatly benefit from being able to be exercised in a safe environment.

Not all dogs have had the best beginnings in life and may have some issues that mean they cannot get the exercise they need on a lead, Murfield Meadow allows the lovely owners that give these dogs homes the opportunity to run freely and safely, also, not everyone lucky enough to have large gardens, again Murfield Meadow helps these owners and dogs. At this time when small businesses are suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic shouldn’t we be encouraging small businesses to succeed especially as this is a very reasonably priced service that is clearly needed by many people.

Dear Sir, We are the owners of Murfield Meadow, the secure dog exercise area located on Benton Street and we are writing in response to Mr and Mrs Evans letter that featured in last month’s edition.

I would like to start by saying that we are legally allowed to be at Murfield Meadow and have not done anything wrong in anyway at all.

Murfield Meadow opened in December 2018 with planning permission granted from Babergh Council. We did not receive any objections to the planning permission application and worked with the Council suggesting ideas to reduce the levels of noise at Murfield Meadow to take into consideration local residents.

This includes restricting our opening hours, limiting the number of bookings we have throughout the day to a maximum of six and limiting the number of dogs in the field at any one time. With the exception of Mr and Mrs Evans, we have not received any other complaints since opening.

When we meet customers at Murfield Meadow, we are always happy that noise is never an issue. Initially, we had an amicable relationship with Mr and Mrs Evans and always insisted that they should call us if they had any issues.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all of our customers for your continued support at this very difficult time.

Dear Sir, Many of us are aware that fraudsters have been busy whilst lockdown has been going on, but I was shocked when my mother, who is in her eighties, was a victim.

They are very charming, very believable, very convincing. In her case they phoned her and said they were from Scotland Yard, claimed her bank card had been used in London (she lives in North Norfolk) and asked her to take £3,500 out of her account. Which she did, and a courier came and collected it. They tapped into the theme ‘You are doing your duty and helping the police’. They told her not to tell anyone about it. They asked her to take more money out which fortunately the bank declined to let her do. The police are aware of this type of crime and their investigation is covering many counties as it is a nation-wide operation it appears.

Talk to your relatives especially if they may have missed the advice on-line about this type of fraud, don’t let your relatives feel stupid like my mother did. Typically, it is a call out of the blue, they claim to be the police or your bank, advise there is an issue with your card, may ask for your pin or to get money for them, send a courier to collect. The police will never ask you to take money out of your account, your bank will never ask you to transfer money from one account to another.

Dear Sir, It was good to read that plans for the Partridge premises are moving forward.

However, it was not so encouraging to read how this sprawling property will be utilised. With reference to the unlisted buildings. Given the current sad quota of empty shops on the Hadleigh High Street and outside larger retailers e.g. John Lewis, Debenhams and M & S falling victim to the current change in shopping trends, we must question the logic of building more retail outlets behind the High Street. When I brought the subject up with the architect at one of their consultations, he said Babergh had instructed them to include shops.

Is the Council completely out of touch? While the Government are relaxing the rules for developers to change existing commercial premises into residential properties Hadleigh will be doing the reverse. Admittedly, there will be some upper floor apartments which, in the recent words of the architect’s company director, “will suit first time buyers and downsizers”. As downsizers tend to be older surely additional town centre ground floor accommodation would be even more appropriate and far more desirable. This would also leave all the remaining High Street retail outlets free from new competition. I hope that my fears are unfounded and, should the projected plans be realised, Hadleigh residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a revitalised town centre with new thriving shops and a greater footfall. It just means bucking the current trend.

Dear Sir, We are encouraged in these Coronavirus days to exercise by walking. I have spent time cutting back the nettles and brambles at the sides of the riverside walk so that the many walkers can pass each other at a safe distance.

There are footpaths leading to footbridges crossing the River Brett south of Hadleigh, however access to these means walkers have to cross stiles which are in unsafe condition due to the timber planks upon which you tread are loose or missing. The stiles are situated near 135 Benton Street and also near to Benton End House. Maybe our local councillors can take note and draw the relevant authority to the need to make access to footpaths safe.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As the Chancellor’s Parliamentary aide in the Commons I have had a bird’s eye view of the huge effort put in by HM Treasury to support business and employment during lockdown. As a result of that lockdown, itself necessary to protect public health, we are now seeing the inevitable negative economic impact. But I am confident that everything possible has been done to support businesses through grants, loans, and cuts to VAT and business rates.

Out and about in South Suffolk over the last few weeks, visiting shops and market traders, time and again the message from business owners was how grateful they were for the support received – but I am aware challenging economic headwinds continue.

The fact is we cannot support every business or save every job. I am aware that for one technical reason or another some have not received the support they would have expected. Above all, even where businesses have received grants or Bounce Back Loans, as a small business owner myself by background, I know this is not enough. Yes, businesses can be publicly supported for a short period.

However, ultimately, if businesses are to keep trading, they need just that: trade.

That means footfall; that means custom; and that means you and I, getting out and supporting local firms.

This is one reason the Chancellor recently announced the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme, offering discounted meals in August if we do our bit by doing the sort of thing we used to enjoy before lockdown – popping to our local pub, café or restaurant for a meal. I would encourage people to make the most of these offers, but naturally, to do so sensibly and in a way that complies with public health guidance.

I will sound like a stuck record in the weeks ahead but must repeat: the effort of our shops and services to implement Covid-safe environments needs to be matched by each of us. ‘Normal’ times have not returned but lockdown is finally easing, and we can still enjoy ourselves in a way that lifts our mood and – most importantly - protects jobs.

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Don’t put off appointments during lockdown!

Parents are urged to continue to attend immunisation appointments for young children during the COVID-19 lockdown. The childhood immunisation programme is crucial in protecting children from serious disease including pertussis (whooping cough), measles, meningitis and pneumonia.

It is important that parents continue to bring their children for appointments when invited, and complete their immunisations on time. This is vital in preventing outbreaks of serious childhood diseases. Immunisation programmes prevent avoidable GP appointments and hospital admissions because of vaccinepreventable diseases. Keeping children out of hospital is especially important during the response to COVID-19. Pregnant women should also continue to attend their routine immunisation sessions when contacted by their general practice or child health clinic.

Social distancing measures and appropriate infection control procedures are in place to protect you and the practice staff.

Your health visitor will be able to offer advice and support for parents, and pregnant women can obtain advice on immunisation from their midwife. The number of women attending their smear test appointment has fallen by more than 80pc during lockdown. Women who have received a letter inviting them for a smear test are being urged to attend.

Those attending the practice for a screening will notice some changes to help to reduce the spread of Covid. This will include social distancing measures and healthcare staff will be wearing protective clothing including face masks.

• Patients are being asked to follow social distancing measures by waiting outside until the appointment time.

• Those who are self-isolating should not book until their isolation period is complete.

• Anyone who is shielding should follow the government guidance specific to the area.

Cervical screening remains a really important test and the best protection against cervical cancer. It can be worrying for people during the outbreak, but if you have been invited to have your smear test it is safe to attend.

In an attempt to put the long period of lockdown to good use and keep busy at the same time, four local ladies set about knitting squares which would ultimately be made into blankets. That was the ‘keep busy’ side of the project. There was no query over their usefulness as the knitters knew the finished garments were urgently needed at the Neonatal Unit at Ipswich hospital. When appropriate, babies at the unit are given a blanket which they eventually take home.

So Rosie Slais, Val Scott, Lorna Meier and Jan Devey adopted the simple recommended pattern and set to. As lockdown continued the squares mounted up and they were soon able to present Sharon Hynard, a member of the Neonatal nursing team, with 20 brightly coloured blankets. This was supposed to mark the end of the exercise but the knitters found it such a relaxing activity that they plan to continue. If you would like to join this small band of home knitters your contribution would be very much appreciated.

We are undertaking to relaunch the Loyalty card, with two lucky winners monthly receiving a voucher to spend in our participating High Street shops.

We want to encourage everyone to come in for a chat, ask for help if you need it, find out about whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on offer in our amazing town, or volunteer for one of our amazing groups, we have all been overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm of our over 150 volunteers during the recent crisis!

Hadleigh truly cares, and we hope to be able to continue to do this for our community, whatever your need for as long as we can. The shop will be open 10 until 4, Monday to Saturday, staffed by volunteers on a 3 hour shift rota system, and will also offer local produce, art and crafts, exhibitions, and anything else we can or are asked to showcase. A real community Hub we hope!

Hadleigh Walkers Our walks have been pretty successfully spoilt for the last 3 months although most of us will have spent lots of time re-exploring our own neighbourhoods. It looks like we may be able to walk together as a series of mini groups for an August walk on Saturday 8th. In all probability we will arrange a walk round Polstead which is fairly close by. Well, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see this coming! No rehearsals, no choir, no singing (apart from the occasional doorstep solo when we were clapping for key workers) but more devastatingly, no summer concert. Not even a mention on Classic FM from the wonderful Alexander Armstrong could replace the passion we all have for our biannual community event, especially as he got the dates mixed up!

Mark Murphy and David Butcher from Radio Suffolk fared considerably better when they agreed to come and record The Suffolk Day Song in Hadleigh.

Following strict social distancing rules, David Butcher did an incredible job with a small number of choir members, placing us at two metres apart, each with our own sanitised microphone. After the recording, he layered the sounds and made the final recording sound like many more than the six who recorded. The choir would like to thank Hadleigh Town Council for enabling us to record in the beautiful Guildhall gardens, and the team at BBC Radio Suffolk for allowing us to share a little piece of Hadleigh with the rest of Suffolk.

Free Home Delivery Service from The Jolly Meat Company At the beginning of lockdown the Jolly Meat Company were on hand to help support the local community with their free home delivery service.

With a great range of locally sourced meat, the high street butchers provided a valuable service to many during some very challenging times. With just a £10 minimum spend required, customers new and old could call the shop, discuss their meat order and get it delivered free of charge to their door.

Following the local interest in this home delivery service The Jolly Meat Company have now confirmed they will be continuing to offer this within Hadleigh and surrounding villages.

Bookworms’ Bonanza! the Lavenham Children’s Book Festival is going online.

Undaunted by having to cancel this year’s popular Children’s Book Festival due to the Coronavirus, we’ve created a festival website so that children all over the country can join in the fun.

Bookworms’ Bonanza will be available anytime, anywhere 24/7 for children aged between four and twelve.

James Mayhew and Zeb Soanes We’re very excited to have Michael Morpurgo reading from his book ‘The Butterfly Lion’ as well as talking to author Claire Mulley about the inspiration for his stories. Zeb Soanes, the BBC broadcaster, joins with illustrator James Mayhew to update us on the latest adventures of Gaspard the Fox. For dinosaur fans Charlotte Sebag-Montefiore has set quizzes and riddles to test everyone’s knowledge, and Shoo Rayner shows how to draw a timbered house and the Tudor characters who might live there. Hadleigh & District Garden Club The other afternoon I got out the garden shredder ready to put in a pile of prunings that I had cut down the week before, I like to let them dry off a bit as they seem to go through more easily that way. With all the dry weather that had been forecast I had left a pile of clippings by the garage door all ready. After about half an hour the job was done and the last bag had been filled ready for the compost, I turned to check there was nothing left to do and right by my feet was the little robin you can see in the photo.

He was busy collecting all the insects that had been sheltering under the pile of clippings for a while, he even managed to balance on the wall to catch the ones that thought they were heading for safety! After a while he flew away, not before doing a quick circle of the garage and flying out again. I took a chance that he might come back, popped indoors for my camera and sat down to wait, sure enough after about five minutes he returned for the ones that he had missed the first time! I didn't have the heart to sweep up in case he came back for thirds so I did that the following morning! Moments like this are just the reason we should keep one or two areas in our gardens that are not too tidy, just one of the many ways we can attract wildlife. It doesn't look as if we will be meeting for a while but we will let you know as soon as there are any changes. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Hadleigh & District Flower Club Hi everyone, I hope this finds you all well.

We are well into July and still no Flower Club and we just do not know when we will all be able to get together safely and enjoy seeing a wonderful flower demonstration and meet all our friends again. But we will do one day.

I am enclosing a photo from a past demonstration just to remind us of those carefree days! Hopefully you have all been able to get into gardens (I myself have been very busy in our wilderness). Something we can look forward to is next year’s Charity Lunch. The date, hall and speaker have been booked for 2021, the date for your new diary is 17th March. Well Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Council Finances, High Street Recovery, & Locality Budget This coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating affect on our livelihoods and has cost significantly local and the wider national economies. At local council level, expenditure increased above what had been previously predicted, whilst income from areas such as business rates and council tax has decreased. The net effect on Suffolk and Babergh councils is them having to overspend and draw heavily on their reserves. I am pleased to report that at Suffolk, the administration has managed the finances very well, leaving the county in a much stronger position financially than other similar sized authorities elsewhere. A future detrimental factor from this crisis will be a resultant smaller tax base caused by lower revenue streams from business rates and council tax – reduced income. Central government had pledged at the start of the pandemic that it would cover all LGA costs, but this has now been diluted to 75% of every £1 spent. Therefore, SCC now faces the challenge of maintaining current service provision and returning our reserves to an appropriate amount. The forthcoming annual settlement from the Treasury has not yet been confirmed and is uncertain.

For Hadleigh, I have always believed that our High Street is its unique selling point, but it is fragile and must be supported by relatively good purchasing footfall.

The crisis has caused huge disruption for our businesses and I have worked with both Suffolk and Babergh to help ensure that they have accessed the various: support grant funds available as appropriate. I hope these have been enough to ensure their survival. Using my Suffolk Locality Budget (LB), I had supported the Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce last year in trying to attract visitors to Hadleigh.

Together we match-funded a smart full-page advertisement of the High Street in the Suffolk Magazine in the run up to Christmas. In July we match-funded again for a fantastic 16-page ‘Focus on Hadleigh’ article in the East Anglian Daily Times (17th July 2020) in collaboration with the Town Council.

In April I was contacted by Stuart Service who asked for assistance for this year’s ‘Hadleigh in Bloom’ hanging baskets. These are normally funded by the High Street businesses, but they were not in the financial position to do so this year. I did not hesitate in providing £1,500.00 from the LB for this purpose. Well done to Stuart and the team for maintaining the flower baskets, they continue to look great.

I hope they will be a lasting attraction for visitors and residents alike and show that we are open for business.

Each year SCC councillors are given a share of Suffolk’s £600k Locality Budget, £8,000 each. Hadleigh Quarry The two Hadleigh Quarry planning applications were again submitted without change to Suffolk‘s Development and Regulation Committee again on Wednesday 15th July 2020. As at May’s committee, I supported the Town Council’s and of residents’ objections with my concerns being: 1. The proposed level of HGV movements of 80 per day in any 4-week period implies an annual movement to and from the quarry of over 20,000 movements per annum, a 20-fold increase, which is too large for our present local roads’ infrastructure.

2. I stated bluntly that the junction at Aldham Mill Hill/A1071 is inadequate and unsafe, and the increase in slow moving turning moments by HGV’s can only increase the risks. The offset crossroads has a high accident rate compared to other junctions along the same stretch of fast road. Unlike the 3 other local junctions it does not have any warning/lane separation islands protecting the road junction.

3. Aldham Mill is currently of insufficient width for HGVs to pass one another without traversing the grass verges and will require widening of the carriageway to 5.5 metres in width.

4. The quarry operator has frequently breeched the current HGV movement conditions, more than the 8 per day allowed for.

Both applications were refused by the committee by 8 votes against to 5 votes in favour.

CCTV The current CCTV system installed twenty years ago in Hadleigh consists of 7cameras which are inoperable and have no deterrence effect. There have been several robberies on our High Street in recent years, where no filmed footage has been made available for evidence to assist the police. Since being elected, I have been working with many stakeholders including Babergh, Suffolk Police and Hadleigh Town Council on a proposal for a fully compliant, updated CCTV system to watch over the town’s High Street area.

This project will provide coverage for both Hadleigh and Sudbury and on 6th July, Babergh Cabinet agreed to an £180,000 upgrade in CCTV provision – ensuring Hadleigh and Sudbury remain safe and thriving towns.

Although Babergh does not have a statutory obligation to provide CCTV, it shares views held by its partners and communities that CCTV coverage contributes to reducing crime and disorder, in addition to assisting police with finding missing people.

Summer Holiday activity and food programme For the second year SCC has successfully secured approx. £963,000 of funding from the Department for Education (DfE) to deliver a summer holiday activity and food programme for children in Suffolk. The programme which is named ‘Summer in a Box’ will support the most disadvantaged families, children in care and young carers over the six week summer holiday. It will include the distribution of 1600 activity packs which have been developed in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust and a range of local Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise groups.

They provide lots of practical activities for children and young people to interact with ranging from music, museums, physical activity, art, reading, mental health & wellbeing, and cooking as well as the opportunity to engage with video tutorials and specialist tutors.

SCC has been working to ensure that families most in need have access to food and information on cooking and nutrition. 6000 food packs which equates to 12,000 meals will be sent to these families, this is in addition to free school meal vouchers. Children who receive Free School Meals also can access a range of free outdoor holiday clubs where they can take part in different sports and a range of creative activities as well as receiving a free lunch. There are additional resources available for children with complex SEND issues, and for children and young people living in complex family situations.

Councillors have agreed to an £180,000 upgrade in CCTV provision – ensuring Hadleigh and Sudbury remain safe and thriving towns that people are proud to call home. Babergh District Council worked with Suffolk Police, Hadleigh and Sudbury Town Councils and neighbouring authorities on proposals for a fully compliant, updated CCTV system to watch over the district’s two largest towns.

Although the council does not have a statutory obligation to provide CCTV, it shares views held by its partners and communities that CCTV coverage contributes to reducing crime and disorder – in addition to assisting police with finding missing people. The current CCTV system installed twenty years ago and consisting of 17 cameras in Sudbury and seven in Hadleigh - was becoming increasingly outdated. Proposals unanimously passed by Cabinet today will see the council transfer CCTV monitoring and maintenance arrangements to neighbouring authority West Suffolk Council – allowing images to be monitored 24/7 in their purpose built CCTV control room, and enabling defective equipment to be repaired promptly. Both Sudbury and Hadleigh Town Councils will be making financial contributions to the ongoing costs associated with monitoring.

Pending approval, future Community Infrastructure Levy contributions - collected from developers when they build new homes in the district - will provide funding to upgrade the CCTV to a fully digital wireless system, once a system specification has been agreed.

The Wellbeing Service The Wellbeing Service is an NHS IAPT service which offers a range of psychological therapies to help and support people to manage stress, low mood and anxiety, whatever the cause.

We aim to reduce the onset of these difficulties, prevent deterioration and promote recovery by offering a range of flexible services tailored to meet specific needs. He said all councils had been severely affected by the crisis, and there was no government recompense for loss of income. He also said that the current situation was not seen as a reason to change the planning process. In response to a question, he confirmed that the decision on the Marquis planning application would be delegated rather than going to committee. The applicant planned to submit some amendments to the original application; once these were received, there would be a further 21day consultation period.

• Faded road markings The faded road markings at the junction of Brett Green and Mill Lane, and where Mill Lane joined the main road, had been renewed.

• Housing Needs Survey The Clerk had been in contact with Community Action Suffolk, whose Community Development Officer had offered to attend a PC meeting in order to explain the process and discuss the matter further; it was agreed to invite her to a meeting once things were back to normal.

• COVID 19 The decisions taken during lockdown were noted. Councillors noted the actions taken by the working party to identify how those parishioners self-isolating, shielding or in the vulnerable category could be helped to carry on their day to day lives. Councillor Woods (in the Chair) thanked the working party – Councillor Curran said a huge thank-you was also due to the ELVs. • Casual vacancy Tony Stenning had resigned from the Parish Council with effect from 1 June 2020, thus creating a casual vacancy. The Clerk had contacted Babergh and was awaiting a Notice of Vacancy which would be required to be displayed for fourteen days. Following this period, if no request for an election had been made by ten electors, the vacancy could be filled by co-option.

• Village seat It was agreed that the picnic table installed at Blacksmith’s Corner in Lower Layham would be adopted by the Parish Council; the Clerk would ensure it was added to the asset register and insurance policy.

Tree felling If you have been on to the field recently you may have noticed that about 20 trees have been felled. These have been grown as a cash crop over the last 15-20 years and bring a substantial income to the playing field. The trunks will be taken away to become cricket bats and the residual piles of wood will serve as habitat for animals, birds and insects. The newly cleared area offers the opportunity to plan a nature reserve to develop alongside the young trees that will be planted in the winter.

St Andrew’s – your parish church It gives us great pleasure to announce that St Andrew’s Church is now open to the public again, every Wednesday from 10am-4pm.

Social distancing and hygiene guidelines must be followed at all times.

We thank the churchwardens for all their hard work in enabling the re-opening, and for continuing to clean and maintain the church building.

Life in Layham under lockdown - By Noel Herring How strange it is, there are no cars, you would think we live on Mars.

Cyclists, walkers, horses go by, very well if it is dry.

Our garden is such a boon to walk around in the afternoon.

We time the day by when we eat, same old food but sometimes a treat.

We have volunteers who we call ELVs* seeing that we have food upon the shelves.

Sunday we look forward to the most, Steve from the Queens Head brings us roast.

Our friends and family we can get to laugh and talk with on the ‘net’.

Playing Field The members of the Playing Field Management Committee decided at their last meeting to make the basic requests for behaviour on the field a little more formal. On each gate into the field there are now three requests – none of which will surprise you: Last summer there were a number of occasions when groups lit portable barbecues which burned away patches of grass. There are at least three places where that has been done this year. We understand that, in hot dry spells of weather, fire can creep along the surface of grassland and cause a fire after the original users have left. We hope people will heed this message. The committee has also decided to put more effort into developing the Nature Area. Gates have been erected to make it clear that the area beyond the hedge is quite different to the main play area.

We hope the three requests on the notices on the gates leading into that area make sense to users. Wild life and loose dogs do not fit well together – we would appreciate dog owners controlling their pets whilst in that area. The term “NOT FOR PLAY” as well as being a general request is also meant to get the message across that swimming in the river is not appropriate. If someone got into difficulties in the water there could be a nasty accident.

At Layham’s tidy up last year, a suggestion for a bench and chair on Blacksmith’s Corner, as they clear sufficient space to put one there, Nigel undertook the task, permission from whom we had to ask, And Suffolk Highways said OK, for a picnic table, by the way.

The site was cleared, the base was laid, by digger, rather than a spade, Plinth constructed, table sorted, opening session (un-reported)!

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club As everyone knows sports clubs have been hugely affected by Covid -19, and rightly so, the health and safety of the public and our members is our biggest priority, however it has not stopped the club from continuing!

Since March we have been running Zoom training for all our club members, the sessions have been run by our qualified coaches but we have also had training with Sachel Grant the Head of Performance at Saracens Mavericks superleague club, and also sessions run by players from the superleague club Pulse - all these sessions have contributed to our players physical and mental wellbeing during what could be a very isolating time.

We ran our annual Awards evening in July over zoom, although this wasn't the 'party' we had planned it went extremely well with a fantastic raffle and plenty of trophies presented. Well done to all our club winners this season, our main awards went to: Esme Mallet - Junior Sportsmanship Award Annette Wilshaw - Adult Sportsmanship Award Meadow Wyncoll - Junior Most Outstanding Achievement Award Sarah Cole - Adult Most Outstanding Achievement Award We are busy planning for next season and have our fingers crossed that we can start face to face training (on a netball court!) in August, this will be in line with England Netball Guidelines, the guidelines at the moment state we can train however it must be in small groups of 6 keeping to the social distancing rule, once our courts are back open at Hadleigh High Leisure we will start to make arrangements.

From September we hope to open the club back up to new players, we start from school year 3 to year 11 in our Junior Club, and adults from 16 years to any age, standard and ability, we have space in all our groups.

We are very interested to hear from anyone who has a very strong, experienced netball back ground (playing in top divisions and Regional level would be very favourable) and is interested in playing high level Netball in the future preferably with shooting experience.

We start BEE Netball in September, this is the new England Netball initiative for school years 3-6, we have had a lot of interest but still have spaces, we will be running a taster session on the 22nd August, again this will be run in line with England Netball Guidelines, please get in touch to book your daughter on our taster!

Stour Valley Men’s Probus Club Recent Meetings Our last meeting was our March 2020 AGM when Dave Carman was voted in, again, as President and Speaker Secretary, Graeme Forsyth as Secretary and Val Pretty as Treasurer.

Summer special from Orchard Barn - The Old Tools are the Best Back in 2007 when OBee Community Interest Company was formed, the high street in Needham Market was blessed with three shops that sold old carpentry tools. There was a monthly hand tool auction behind The Limes pub. Timber framing students, teachers and volunteers would congregate early on a Wednesday morning to eye up, and bid for old saws, planes, augers, draw knives and other seemingly rusty and unkempt tools.

At Orchard Barn our aspiration is to use traditional methods of carpentry and construction that make best use of these old tools.

However, they are frequently in a very poor state when they reach us. Over the years we have run sharpening sessions, but it is a specialised job requiring skill, dedication and time. More ‘Saw Doctors’ are needed! It is a dying art that needs keeping alive and encouragement to prosper.

With that in mind, two years ago OBee CIC (the community group that run Orchard Barn) organised Suffolk’s first Saw Fest that aimed to demonstrate the art of saw restoration, saw setting/sharpening and ultimately best practice in hand saw use.

Since Saw Fest volunteers have spent many happy hours and days slowly renovating old tools, but we still have a way to go. Lockdown has given us time to further assess the contents of our tool shed and to begin the process of culling those tools that are pretty attractive but sadly too far gone, and time to bring back even more of the old saws that have been donated over the year. Many tools bear the mark of several owners and would appear to have been handed down through generations of carpenters. Our aspiration is to breathe new life into these tools and continue to inspire future generations to love and use them.

SbN Ladies Winter League Final Stoke by Nayland ladies Corinne Jackson and Hilary Cairns picked up where they left off before lockdown to complete the Finals of the winter league 9 hole competition. In complete contrast to the last rounds they’d played mid February they had a glorious summers day with plenty of roll on the ball as the ground was dry and much firmer. They played the front 9 holes of the Gainsborough course.

Hilary got off to a good start winning the first hole, Corinne managed to pull back winning the next two holes with a birdie on the third to go 1up, the next few holes saw the ladies battle going up and down until they we’re all square on the 8th tee.

The last two holes Corinne managed to par giving her a 2up win on the 9th hole making her this year’s winner of the 9 hole Winter League competition. The game was played in good spirit with Barbara Jones refereeing.

Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline & Charity Shop July is a very strange month for us and tinged with more than a little sadness. It is the first time in more than 10 years that we have not had a group of Chernobyl Children arriving for their health respite break and of course there are 18 very disappointed children who were really looking forward to coming to England for this life changing experience. We are hopeful that we may be able to bring a very few children for two weeks at Christmas as long as the current situation continues to improve. We are also still continuing with our Christmas Stocking program and hope to be able to deliver them at the end of December but without the summer group travelling we now face the problem of how to actually get the stockings to Belarus. Usually the airline allow us to send one free extra bag with each passenger but as no one is travelling we not only have the problem of find enough travellers to take the bags but it will cost us 50.00 per bag to send them as additional luggage with “regular” travellers. We have been making up the stockings for months but still have about a hundred to go!

Meanwhile the Charity shop in Needham Market has had a small refit and is now open, Tues-Fri 10-3 and Sat 10-1. We are fully compliant with the Retail shopping Covid Guidelines. At times it didn't seem likely that there would be any recreational cricket played this season, and the Meadow would remain immaculate but untouched. But at last we got the go ahead to play, and since then it has been all systems go.

We have worked hard in a very short time to make the pavilion and ground safe for players, members, coaches, volunteers and supporters. All ECB guidelines have been followed and a comprehensive risk assessment completed. For players it will be a slightly different experience, with the changing rooms not being in use, social distancing in operation and sanitising breaks every six overs. For spectators there will be a 1-way system in operation within the pavilion. The bar will be open from 3-8pm on match days, but anyone ordering from the bar will be required to give their name and contact number to assist with the NHS Track and Trace service. Full details of the 'Return to Cricket' protocols can be found on the club website.

On the field things will be a little different too, as our usual league competitions were cancelled during the lockdown. At very short notice a new competition for our Saturday XIs has been organised, the Atkins and Crane Cup and Plate, comprising 6 group games and a Finals Day. Named in tribute to two stalwarts of Suffolk cricket, Norman Atkins and Paul 'Digger' Crane, the matches start on 25th July and run through to 12th September and promise some highly competitive cricket. Two of our teams will also be playing in the Suffolk T20 Cup, with matches predominantly played on Sunday afternoons in August. There will also be Sunday friendlies, Ladies matches on Sunday mornings and junior fixtures during midweek. Competitive Golf Returns to Stoke by Nayland After 7 weeks with the golf courses closed due to the lockdown, Stoke

by Nayland Golf Club finally got back to competitive golf on Saturday 4th July. Golf has been introduced slowly sticking to the social distancing guidelines throughout. Members have been good at abiding by the new protocols, designed to keep players and staff safe throughout.

The first Men’s competition was the Standard Trophy, which is traditionally our first major competition of the year on Good Friday. We had 113 entrants with Adrian Cherry (14) scoring 40 points. Adrian won on countback from Callum Hensby (+2), Danny Goddard (13) and Byron Long (10). The golf course looked great, despite the number of greenkeepers still down following the lockdown.

During the lockdown a couple of innovations were introduced to the courses. The Men’s section purchased Slow Play Clocks for the 6th and 12th greens of both courses to measure players’ progress against an expected time.

Devices were also fitted to every hole to facilitate removal of the ball without touching the flag.
