Hidden Gardens a record success!

We raised over £6500 thanks to the 35 gardeners in Hadleigh who opened their gardens to the public, generous sponsorship from over 20 local businesses, the 621 visitors who bought programmes to visit the gardens, and the everpopular ploughman’s lunches and cakes on sale in the church. The pandemic meant cancelling the open gardens in 2020, and moving the event from June to September this year which proved very popular, with many people commenting on what an interesting change it made to see gardens at a different time of year. Next year in 2022 we will return to an early June opening to show off a whole different set of blooms.

There were very different types of garden on show ranging from larger lawned areas with trees and beautiful borders, to those aimed at offering wildlife havens, and smaller courtyards filled with plants and ideas.

The high street was bustling with visitors holding their green programmes, who provided extra trade for town centre shops.

St Mary’s Church was packed with people enjoying lunches thanks to our team of volunteer caterers, so much so that tables even spilled on to the lawn outside.

Last year’s event had to be cancelled due to the pandemic so we ran a photographic competition instead which attracted 77 entries, and we repeated the competition in 2021 with winners again receiving Benton End irises kindly donated by a high street garden. The event is organised by the Friends of St Mary's Church (and Deanery Tower) in Hadleigh, with all funds raised going towards the upkeep and repair of these two historic buildings.

Getting Down and Dirty It’s nice to do something practical, isn’t it? And good to get out in the sunshine and make a difference. So it was great to get out on the first Environmental Action Day organised by HEAT. Under the watchful eye of Dave Hughes, Public Realm Officer at Babergh and Mid-Suffolk District Council, six of us got together at The Fuzz and cleared elm saplings that were in danger of becoming infected with Dutch Elm Disease.

Coppicing (cutting back) these elms means they can survive by re-growing numerous shoots too small to be used by the beetles that spread the disease.

These coppiced trees will form an understorey which will also benefit other species including nesting birds and the endangered White-letter Hairstreak butterfly who lay their eggs on elm and depend upon it for their survival. After 3 hours work, lunch was in order sitting in the sunshine with new friends. The recently thinned slope leading down from Stockton Close looked great with its freshly opened up spaces.

This kind of thing raises some interesting questions. If Babergh owns these nature reserves, why aren’t they doing the work? The short answer is that Covid has meant further cuts to council’s income so there is no realistic prospect of the council being able to do anything beyond the essential minimum. But a deeper question is what responsibilities we have, as the people who actually live in Hadleigh, to help look after the environment we love and which supports us.

When the first lock down struck we didn’t wait for ‘the council to do something’.

Instead local people set about organising Hadleigh Cares, a highly effective system of self help. HEAT Action days are a bit the same – this is our patch, this is where we live. If we don’t get together and do this work, then no one else will.

Solving the climate crises is always going to be like this – people working together at lots of different levels, each doing their bit. ‘They’ are never going to do everything not least because ‘they’ don’t know and love Hadleigh in the way that we do. So this is exactly the kind of thing that we think HEAT should be doing – practical work to improve the local environment whilst learning about how to best care about the beautiful, complex ecologies in which we live.

Do come along to a HEAT Action Day if you can. The next ones are on 13th and 27th October. We start at 10 am and work for between 2-4 hours (with plenty of tea breaks and cake!). You don’t have to be super fit or have any prior experience so if you’re not sure just come along anyway and see how you feel.

Well, well, here we are again! Will somebody please explain where the time goes?! The last couple of years have been truly challenging, but we will be celebrating 7 years of The Christmas Present Trust this December.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the organisation, perhaps you are new to the area, or maybe you don’t read your Hadleigh Community News from cover to cover (we won’t tell the Avis team, promise!) The Christmas Present Trust provides a free traditional meal, or dietary alternative, and an afternoon of entertainment on Christmas Day for anyone in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, is unable to be with family or friends at this time.

Fingers crossed we will be able to go ahead with the celebratory gathering in The Ansell Centre, but we need to follow Covid guidelines, whatever they may be in December.

However, the pandemic didn’t stop us last year, and thanks to a team of brilliant volunteers, we were able to deliver nearly 100 meals and Christmas gifts to people, with a doorstep carol or two to add a sprinkling of festive cheer.

This event is not possible without a large number of volunteers, who give of their time selflessly over the Christmas period. The Christmas Present Trust is also indebted to individuals, businesses and charitable organisations who support the work we do. If you are among them, please accept our heartfelt thanks, as without donations of time, money, goods and services, we would not be able to operate.

The Souper Kitchen Update The Souper Kitchen is a new community cafe initiative that will be running in the Ansell Community Centre on Sat 20 Nov 10-2 pm as a pilot project. If successful we intend to start bi monthly cafes from Jan 2022 onwards! All are welcome and there will be a range of soups made with seasonal veg on offer along with a roll or two. We also plan to have a “Toast Station” and tea/ coffee and juice, biscuits and cake too. There will be no charge, but if you would like to make a donation you are very welcome too. Our aim is to provide an environment in the heart of our community in Hadleigh to meet, chat and eat together.

Maybe you are a knitting or crochet group looking for a place to meet? Or book group? The ACC is big enough to provide space to accommodate this as part of The Souper Kitchen initiatives. We plan to have some table top/ craft activities on offer too to enhance your experience at the Cafe!!

Issue 66 (October – November 2021) In this issue of Hadleigh’s very own history magazine, Jane Richardson brings to an end her biography of Eddie Botwright (1898 – 1985) as ‘a man who loved Hadleigh’. On his return to the town after the First World War – having served in the tank corps and received a shrapnel injury – he eventually settled down, married a girl from Stowmarket known as Babs and together, they made their home at No.83 Angel Street. When World War Two broke out in 1939, Eddie was too old for active service so joined the Royal Observer Corps and was stationed at its post in Frog Hall Lane. Jane concludes the story of Eddie and Babs by telling of their respective interests in photography, particularly in Hadleigh, and recording in Suffolk dialect. It is a shame that Eddie’s book Down Memory Lane, published in 1995, is out of print but it might be available at Hadleigh Library.

The story of Hadleigh’s malting industry continues with Cross Maltings, which is hidden away behind the war memorial in High Street. Erected sometime in the 1840’s, like several malthouses in the town, it eventually came under the ownership of Hadleigh company T.W. Wilson & Sons, coal, corn and seed merchants, farmers and bricklayers. In 1983, when no longer in use, Cross Maltings was sold, not for demolition but for conversion into dwellings that retain the distinctive pyramidal roof of the kiln as a feature. When the story of Toppesfield Hall was related in Issue 25, there was a gap for the year 1583 in the list of owners. A letter from Clacton Victoria County History Group in Essex enquired whether Hadleigh cloth had ever been exported to Poland. I was rather doubtful about being able to find any surviving records, which was the case. However, research into the merchant in question put him, his widow and their widowed daughter as successive owners of the mansion at that particular time. All is revealed in ‘Fillings the gap at Toppesfield Hall with John Moore, merchant of Ipswich’.

Finally, ‘Lost names of Hadleigh lanes’ uncovers the history of five footpaths that are no longer graced with their respective names. Despite the poor weather we have had this summer, my husband David Coleman attempted to take pictures of them but found the task more difficult than expected. What was traffic flying up and down the main roads by their entrances – except at Bacon Lane at the top of Gallows Hill – dark clouds rapidly passing across the sky and the closure coming loose that holds the battery in place on our camera, David was quite surprised that he managed to get any suitable for publication!

Would you like to be the Local Recorder for Hintlesham & Chattisham?

The Suffolk Local History Council runs a Recorders Scheme throughout Suffolk.

We administer a network of volunteers to ensure that the ‘present’ is adequately recorded at local level for the ‘future’.

A Recorder will note significant happenings in their parish and collect their local parish magazines, leaflets, election pamphlets and newspaper cuttings. At the end of each year, they are asked to submit a short report summarising the activities of their parish. The reports are deposited at the Suffolk Record Office and available to future researchers together with the collected items.

On All Takeaway Food Collections Monday to Thursday

Hadleigh Old School Goes to the Movies at Hallowe’en On Saturday 30th October 2021 Hadleigh Old School is proud to present The Classic Horror Experience. For one night only - Hollywood composer Jason Frederick will take a trip through the world of classic horror film music – playing both live and recorded music, as well as original interview excerpts. Featuring all your favourite film scores including Dracula, Psycho, Theatre of Blood and The Curse of Frankenstein. Also, a complete live-to-picture performance of Jason’s original score to the horror classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Doors open 6pm for 7pm showtime. The programme comprises a 45 minutes first half, followed by full movie of approximately 60 minutes. A generous interval will allow plenty of time to go to the licensed bar or pose in your Hallowe’en costume in a photo booth provided by fashion photographer Nik Wilding – NB dressing up is entirely optional.

Jason Frederick comes to Hadleigh from his Canadian birthplace, via Los Angeles where he composed for Film and TV including Disney’s 101 Dalmatians 2, Top Gear and the classic documentary Bela Lugosi: The Forgotten King. He has also performed at the Royal Albert Hall as well as being a member of a 007 James Bond tribute orchestra. With funding from The National Lottery, we are running a Building Connections Project during October, offering FREE Peg Making Workshops to people in the local community.

The handmade timber frame for our Long House needs at least 700 wooden pegs to fix all the pieces together, so the pegs are a small but crucial part of the build. They are made individually by hand from locally grown oak using a drawer knife and a shave horse. The photo shows two of our volunteers hard at work! Our Workshops will start with a brief introduction to timber framing, looking at the timbers which have been made on site for our Long House, to put the use of wooden pegs in context, and then you will learn how to fashion them to just the right size and shape. It’s a sociable task and surprisingly easy once you know how!

Having completed a Beginners’ Workshop, you might like to join an Improvers’ Workshop to progress further, and you would be very welcome to join us as a Volunteer if you feel you would like to continue peg making with others.

Since its launch in 2015, nearly 1200 cyclists have signed up and completed Hadleigh Cycling Club’s cycle sportive, the Gayford Flyer. One participant commented: “The route this year was fantastic! A bit challenging with all the hills in the second half:) and therefore even more rewarding. It was such fun to be able to do an organised ride again. Especially on such a beautiful day. Thanks to all the volunteers and the organisation for putting all the time and effort in.”

The Club relies on a large team of volunteers who sign and marshal the route and register riders. This year’s sportive had the backing of a host of sponsors and supporters including: The George PH, Crockatt Garage, Sunny Day Cycleworks, East of England Co-op, M Chisnall & Sons, Boxford Bike Club, The Pedal House and Hadleigh Hares.

Riders rode a figure of 8 route, north and south of the town, in keeping with the Club’s “keep it local” approach. Details of the route and other quiet lanes close to Hadleigh can be found on the Club’s website.

The Club’s Summer of Cycling Sessions at Northern Gateway, Colchester proved very popular with juniors and adults and the contributions of Benson, Simon, Roger and Perrie were noted by the Committee.

The Club runs social rides on Sundays which usually begin at 8am (average speed 15mph) and 9.00/9.30am (12/13mph) from The George and there is a café stop.

Yarn Worx, Hadleigh’s New Yarn Shop We may have only been open a few weeks but what an amazing few weeks it’s been. Our knit nights and knit & natter mornings have been a roaring success.

People with common interests have come together to knit or crochet in each other’s company and some beautiful friendships have formed… One of our regular customers from Newmarket who needed some advice on a knitting pattern met up in the shop with another customer from Ipswich. These two people initially met at one of our knit nights, hit it off and swapped phone numbers.

Our learn to knit and learn to crochet courses continue to be ever popular with all current dates fully booked. We will be releasing more dates shortly so do keep in touch if you want to reserve a space on one of these. We do plan to offer different courses for more advanced knitters and crocheters. These are likely to take place in the new year and include knitting in the round, sock knitting, Amigurumi (the art of knitting or crocheting stuffed toys), brioche knitting and more.

With the evenings drawing in and cooler weather just around the corner, we have started to think about autumnal colours and thicker, cosier yarns. Marathon Number 5 for Stuart I will be running my fifth London Marathon on Sunday 3rd October in aid of Crohn's & Colitis UK. After last year’s “virtual marathon” it will be great to once again be pounding the streets of London!

Another annual celebration is Hedgehog Awareness Week in May but they need our help all the time, particularly during Guy Fawkes preparations. Please check for the little chaps under the bonfire BEFORE you set light to it.

This has been a bad year for fly strike with hedgehogs suffering horribly. Should you come across a hedgehog, particularly in daylight hours, please take it to a hedgehog rescue or bring it to SESAW immediately. Advance apologies to those with a sensitive stomach but many arrivals have been unfurled to reveal maggots eating them alive. Our prickly friends are now classified as vulnerable on the Mammal Society’s Red List.

The Hadleigh Archive Hadleigh’s History on your Doorstep

Waffle Parties The annual Hadleigh Deanery Fete, held on August Bank Holiday Monday, was, when the town was a smaller town, one of the events of the year. The rear lawn and terrace of the Deanery House was the site of the fete. This same site was once the location of the former parsonage house, a timber framed house built in the 14th century. This building served for some centuries, and included some considerable alterations during that time, when Hugh James Rose was invited to be the new incumbent of this benefice. Rose, who suffered from asthma, declined the invitation unless a new house was built for him. The church authorities already had a report stating “the old parsonage house is much out of repair” thus agreed.

A new brick Deanery House was built and attached to the late 15th century Deanery Tower which had been built by William Pykenham and was then freestanding, the new house being completed by 1833. Doorways were cut through the thick tower walls on each floor to enable direct access into the new house.

This photograph is showing one of the Bank Holiday fetes taking place. There are stalls and booths and in the centre a skittles game with a ball suspended from the central post. Some residents may remember Jim Osborn, who regularly operated a hand cranked roundabout for children. During the afternoon he rarely had time for a rest from cranking the operating wheel in the warm sunshine before further children were lining up for the next ride.

The photograph is interesting for showing the original extent of the 1833 Deanery House built for Rose, which extended across part of the rear elevation of the tower, with a similar extension at the opposite end to the north. A row of small gables extended along the parapet, and included a arched trefoil brick detailing recesses along the facade. In 1961 the two outer wings were demolished, and the gables, when it was considered that the Deanery House was too large for the then needs of the church at Hadleigh. This picture is therefore pre 1961 and likely to have been taken in the late 1950’s. The Deanery lawn and terrace is still the setting for a variety of church events, and perhaps the Deanery Fete event will be held once again?

A team of experienced volunteers’ catalogue and transcribe its large number of documents and images, all of which are held in archive-approved conditions. Visitors are welcome by appointment.

Do you know your Bach from your Brahms?

Just as our tastes in clothes, holidays and food change as we get older, so do our preferences in music. Whilst classical music isn’t solely the premise for the retired, our appreciation for it does tend to come along around the same time as we prefer a visit to the garden centre rather than a night club and prefer afternoon tea to a late supper (or the indigestion!). Personally, I’ve always felt that the world of classical music is almost a secret club and unless you really know your Verdi from your Vivaldi you really don’t have the credentials to join.

My first experience of classical music was when my first headmaster (a cruel disciplinarian) would play classical music as we marched into assembly each morning in silence. The composer and name of the piece of music would be written on a wipe board in red pen in the hall for a week. No one had a clue what it said and wouldn’t dare to ask. From then it was a world so weighted with history, foreign language and odd terminology that I stayed clear of it. No one wants to be the person at the pub quiz who mispronounces Eine Kleine Nachtmusik now do they. In 1992 Classic FM started and with the development of digital radio rapidly became a mainstream station with over 5million weekly listeners. Since then, classical music has become accessible to all. Listeners can dip into the Hall of Fame hour each morning or dig much deeper into the history and lives of the greatest composers. I highly recommend Classic FM, whatever your age or situation. Sometimes an instrumental piece will take you away from the hustle and bustle of life just for a little.

The Hadleigh Choral Society will be performing Vivaldi’s Gloria, as part of their Autumn concert on Saturday 20 November at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was born in 1678 in Venice. He became one of the greatest composers of the baroque style of music composing over 50 operas and influenced other great composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach. He moved to Vienna and died there in poverty in 1741. Like so many other famous composers, he would never know of his popularity and the joy and comfort that his music would give generation after generation, century after century.

The piece is made up of 12 movements, the first movement being most wellknown – ‘Gloria, Gloria in excelsis deo’. The work is uplifting, joyful and a challenge for the choir and musicians performing.

I will be getting my tickets early as the concert is usually a sell-out. I am hoping the seats are comfy and the audience either side of me aren’t too fidgety so, for just a couple of hours, I can drift away without distraction. I hope to see you there too. Don’t worry if you don’t know your Bach from your Brahms or your Schubert from your Saint Saëns, your secret is safe with me.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre It’s wonderful to be open to all comers at last. I’m able to give rides to my own special people, wheelchair bound for far too long, now bravely facing the challenge of riding me again. We take it slowly so nobody gets spooked.

September saw a scrappy return of our regulars, did I hear that some parents were a bit slow off the mark? Well, you are not the only ones.... isn’t everyone feeling a bit funny about getting back to normal? Babs and I try to understand, but we are mere machines so there’s no comparison.

The live herd had the upheaval of a dog show on September 11th. Four of their fields had to be vacated for the entire day whilst the Shelley Team swung into action and produced an event to remember. Parys and Tilly had the honour of hosting the main ring in their paddock: there were side shows and games (all priced to allow plenty of participation from our younger guests) gaily coloured bunting, lots and lots of dogs, and nearly as many owners.

In the yard we had stalls selling lovely things (Babs and I couldn’t see what) wonderful teas and cakes, and the amazing dog agility course run by Sue Barrow in the arena. The ‘boys’, Alfie, Bryn, Roddy, Snoopy and Buzz hosted the car parks in their fields, ably supervised by more Shelly volunteers and some pressganged younger Baileys. Truly a Shelly Family event. My two phots show the exhausted Dog Agility team at the end of the day, and one of Lucy, one of the smallest competitors, watching other dogs in the ring.

There’s a new session on Wednesday afternoons taking place outside my room: It’s called ‘Tea With A Pony’ for people living with dementia. I’m told the details are on our webpage (see below) but I’ll be waggling my ears to hear how that one goes.

Well the clocks will change at the end of October and I’ll be working under electric light I expect. We have to have good ventilation in my room and the other enclosed spaces so wrap up warm when you visit! See you in a month, and don’t you get too spooked on 31st.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Whilst the fallout from Afghanistan lingers, Parliament’s focus has returned very much to domestic matters, especially Health and Social Care. On the one hand we have had the Covid ‘Winter Plan’ and on the other, his ambitious plan to finally reform social care – funded with a tax rise that will also address the pressing matter of the backlog in elective surgery. The Prime Minister has also reshuffled his Government, and I am delighted to have been appointed as a Minister in the Ministry of Justice. I am very much looking forward to working on my brief alongside the ministerial team.

Regarding the Covid protocol for autumn and winter, ‘Plan A’ builds on the success of the vaccine roll-out and provides additional vaccines for millions of people across the UK, with fully vaccinated over-50s and vulnerable people to be offered an additional booster shot. ‘Plan B’ would be implemented if the data demonstrates that the disease presented a greater risk, and focuses on mandatory face masks, possible vaccine passports and working from home guidance.

On the new health and social care levy, during the pandemic the country joined together to clap and cheer for our frontline NHS and social care workers. Even now you can find banners and posters still in place around South Suffolk, celebrating and thanking the NHS for their service in an incredibly difficult period.

Yet these heartfelt and welcome gestures cannot pay the bills to keep the service running as we address the backlog created by Covid-19. So, the question must be asked, how do we fund the billions we all know we need for the NHS and social care?

We could borrow the money, but this would be generationally unfair, passing the buck to future taxpayers when we all benefit today. Instead, the Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer have taken the tough but right decision to find the money through our taxes. Yes, this breaches our manifesto commitment, but I believe that most people realise that the pandemic has impacted this country like nothing else in modern history outside of wartime.

Hadleigh Art Club Activities We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Hadleigh Library. For those that ask, we try to give advice/guidance but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group...

We charge £3 per session to cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon.

This year’s slightly soggy summer may have disappointed those hoping for a heatwave, but for many fruit farmers the mixture of wet and sunny weather has resulted in heavy crops of summer berries – and Boxford (Suffolk) Farms, based in Stoke by Nayland, is one of them.

Rather than see any fruit go to waste – although actually ‘waste’ is the wrong word, as any fruit which doesn’t meet strict quality standards is used to generate renewable power in their award-winning anaerobic digester – the farm delivered 240 punnets of perfectly ripe strawberries to two local primary schools this week.

Pupils and parents at Boxford CEVC Primary School and Stoke by Nayland C of E Primary School enjoyed the plump, sweet fruit at the end of the school day, with punnets handed out to anyone who wanted them from tables set up at the school gates – in keeping with ongoing considerations regarding hands, face and space.

“It’s wonderful to see children back at school and returning to some kind of normality after the disruption they’ve had to endure over the past 18 months. We felt that we had an opportunity to offer them a small treat, which could also translate into a learning experience regarding healthy eating and sourcing local produce,” explained Robert England, Farm Director at Boxford (Suffolk) Farms.

“We’re hoping this small but tasty gesture will be the first in a long line of outreach projects of varying sizes, to support our local community as much as they support us,” added Peter Osborne at parent company The Boxford Group. “The next in our diary will be our Stoke by Nayland Golf Academy Fun Day on 26th September, which will offer games and fun activities for all ages.”

All Change at the Art Station Isla Spraggons’ delightful pictures will leave the walls of the Health Centre to make room for a totally different art form, photography. Although Chris Cullen is known to most as Dr Cullen, what is less well known is his flair for photography. Proof of this talent will be on show at the Practice where several of his striking pieces will be on display. Chris has been a keen photographer for over 30 years. Although qualifying as a doctor meant he had less time for his hobby, he returned to his camera with renewed enthusiasm about ten years ago.

Suffolk is often the subject of his work but he also greatly inspired by the dramatic landscapes of his native Scotland. His talent has not gone unnoticed. He has been a finalist or received commendations in the annual competitions of several prestigious national and international photographic publications.

If you come to the surgery as a patient or for your ‘flu jab why not take a moment to view this stunning collection of Chris’ photographs? All photos are for sale with some of the proceeds going to the Hadleigh and Boxford Medical Practice Charitable Trust.

Climate Change and Growing Food: Preparing For Drought Gardeners talk about the weather – a lot. On the allotments it is usually too wet, too dry, too cold or too hot or any of the above at the wrong time of year!

We are all increasingly aware of the climate crisis and what the future may hold for growing fruit and vegetables. Plot holders are looking for ways of growing fruit and vegetables that can cope with unpredictable and extreme weather especially with the predicted summer droughts. The National Allotment Society (NSALG) has produced an excellent series of evidence-based leaflets on climate change, water shortages, drought and allotment growing. Here are some of their messages about what gardeners can do: • Collect and store more rainwater in winter for summer use.

• Use a watering can and direct water to the base of the plant.

• Watering in the early morning and late afternoon reduces evaporation.

• Better to water thoroughly once a week than a small amount more often • Add mulch around plants.

• Find out which crops are less water dependent and when different crops benefit most from watering. For example: - Squashes can survive and produce fruits from minimal watering but courgette plants need to be kept constantly moist.

- Fruiting crops such as aubergines, cucumbers, sweet corn and tomatoes need constant water throughout their growing period.

- Runner beans need constant moisture but French beans can cope with dryer conditions.

- Lollo Rosso is more heat resistant than Webbs Wonderful.

- Leafy vegetables such as cabbages, chard and spinach along with salad crops need water every stage of growth.

- Avoid watering peas and broad beans when young but they will need water at flowering time and about 2 weeks later.

- Onions need water to establish and then only in dry spells.

- Carrots and parsnips will split if watered irregularly, water before dry conditions develop.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Like many other groups September saw the start up of our club meetings once more. Now held in the Guild Room opposite St Mary’s Church. Janet Parsons was our speaker and she entertained us with her vast knowledge of Orchids. Solving members questions and even re potting problem plants. It was encouraging to see so many members together with numerous visitors enjoy this social event.

Earlier in the month our plant sale was very successful during Hadleigh Hidden gardens, proceeds being shared with St Mary’s Church .

Thanks again to all members who donated plants.

Our next meeting on Oct 11th at 7.30 pm will be a talk about the History of Perrywood... their garden centre in Sudbury is undergoing a dramatic redevelopment and promises great things for the future. Entrance for the talk is £2 for members and £4 for visitors, with raffle, refreshments and our sales table.

A lot of gardening is about forward planning. The runner beans have finished, but leave the best on the plant to dry and save the seed for next year. The same applies to dwarf beans. Garlic needs a long growing season so some self saved cloves can be planted now.

Now is the time to plant any of the numerous spring flowering bulbs on sale everywhere. One of my favourites are the small Tete a Tete daffodils. Everyone surely has room for a pot of them. Leave planting tulips till next month.

Now is a good time to take cuttings of any special Pelargoniums you may have.

Snip off a healthy non flowering growing shoot a couple of inches long, remove the lower leaves, cut just beneath a node. Push the cutting into a pot of gritty compost, water and leave in a well lit place indoors but do not cover. Roots should develop in six to eight weeks. Hadleigh and District Flower Club It was with delight that Chairman Chris, introduced Chrystal from Norfolk to be our demonstrator this month, the very first since lockdown, Chrystal did not disappoint - her demo was titled "Up the Garden Path", well we all journeyed around her garden with foliage, flowers and much fun. A Hadleigh Town Councillor’s reflections on Councils achievements since May 2019 During the May 2019 elections the people of Hadleigh elected 13 new councillors out of 15. That outcome reflected that a number of long serving councillors decided to stand down and not all those who wished to stand again were re-elected.

I was one of those new Councillors keen to serve the Hadleigh Community on a broader front having spent over 20 years in voluntary work as Chairman and Treasurer of Hadleigh United Football Club.

Since May 2019 I have seen and been involved in a number of positive developments and seen many new initiatives launched. I can appreciate not everyone has the time to read through all of the Minutes of Meetings on the Council’s Website so I thought I should share with readers of the Hadleigh Community News my personal reflections and views about what the Council has achieved since May 2019 1. The first and most obvious challenge for the new council was to recruit and rebuild the staffing levels in the office that in October 2019 consisted of just one part time member of staff. For several months the office was supported by Councillors volunteering their time to help run the office whilst a Town Council Manager and then other staff were recruited. Today I can see we have in place a great team of professional people in the office who have not only restored the normal day to day service levels that the Council are responsible for delivering but they have enhanced the capabilities of the Town Council Office that were able to support us through the Covid Pandemic as well as support the new initiatives that Council has launched.

Today we have 2 members of staff with local government experience both working towards their CILCA qualifications and another who is qualified to AAT Level 4 with major project management experience. A good example of their work is the much-improved Town Council’s self-managed Web Site where members of the public can more easily find out about upcoming meetings and events and read promptly published Agenda’s and Minutes of our Main Committees and Sub Committee meetings.

2. The Guildhall Complex is owned by the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity (HMFC) and the Hadleigh Town Council is the sole Trustee. HMFC has been reporting financial losses to the Charity Commission for many years with the financial situation getting worse and not of course helped by the Covid Lockdowns. The HMFC losses are mitigated by the Town Council making grants that are funded by the Council Tax payers of Hadleigh. The first step to address this began after HMFC successfully applied to the Architectural Heritage Fund for grant funding to enable us to commission expert professional support to carry out an independent review of the whole site to help us identify how we best resolve the situation. The consultant’s preliminary assessments and reports have been completed and are now being considered and evaluated. The Trustee will of course be engaging with the people of Hadleigh for their views before any decisions are taken. We were also successful gaining grants to install a new kitchen and to upgrade the stairs. We used the Covid Lockdown period as an opportunity to complete extensive internal redecoration work.

3. We have a focussed Group of Councillors and Non-Councillors working towards delivering major upgrades to the outdoor sports facilities at the Town Council owned Layham Road Sports Ground. The plans include the provision of a 3G All Weather Pitch and new Sports Pavilion that will bring benefits to the whole community and particularly the young people of Hadleigh.

4. We have a focussed Group of Councillors and Non-Councillors working towards producing and delivering for public consultation a long overdue Neighbourhood Plan. Not having a Neighbourhood Plan limits the community funding that the Town Council can apply for.

5. We have a focussed Group of Councillors and Non-Councillors picking up the challenges of the Climate Change Emergency and the Environment and working with the Hadleigh Environmental Action Team (HEAT).

6. The Council in May 2019 started a detailed review of the Cemetery Extension Project that had at that time been largely completed and funded by the previous Council taking out a 500K Public Works Loan to be repaid over 25 years. The Council has published full details of the financial impact of this project on its budget and now understands the life expectancy of the Cemetery Extension.

The additional financial burden of the Cemetery Extension was a major factor behind Council’s decision to increase the 20/21 and 21/22 precepts following several years of zero increase. The Council also decided that despite several misgivings from Councillors and the public we will continue and prepare the Cemetery Extension ready for use (including a Natural Burial Area) when the existing traditional Cemetery areas become full.

7. The Council has worked in partnership with Hadleigh Cycling Club to identify new locations for additional cycle parking and successfully convinced Suffolk County Council to fund the new parking from their cycling funding pot.

8. The Council has worked with Babergh District Council and users of the skatepark to successfully raise £60,000 to extend the park due to it’s popularity.

9. The Council has funded the installation of Speed awareness cameras & upgraded CCTV cameras around the town.

10. The Council has Increased it’s grants budget available to community groups and local charities.

11. The Council has worked with local businesses to bring back the Hadleigh Loyalty Card.

12. The Council has supported and worked with Babergh District Council to set up the Hadleigh Virtual High Street to enable our small independent shops to get a presence on the Web. The Council is also in the process of planning a High Street closure on the 4th December 2021 and staging a late-night Xmas Market for the town to enjoy a special late night shopping experience.

I feel as a Councillor I am making a positive contribution to the above initiatives and working with colleagues and the Council Staff on various Committees and Sub Committees. I see around the Council table a group of people volunteering their time, with a wide range of backgrounds, life experiences and skills.

In a Council Meeting working together in a respectful manner is vital, as is accepting the democratic process of the decisions made. As a Councillor you soon learn you have the added responsibility of operating within very detailed regulations and that is why the Council employs staff with the skills and knowledge to guide us along. It can be frustrating for people who are used to getting things done at speed, but Councillors must strive to work together with the Staff so collectively we can continue to make a positive difference to the future of our great Town.

Over the summer the coffee shop has had a complete makeover and we hope that you agree it looks amazing. The floor topper mats arrived over the holidays too, so the gym is now looking very purple!

Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Compliments and Complaints – May I encourage readers to give feedback to Suffolk CC on the services they provide, both compliments for job well done as well as complaints as appropriate. I’m sure that if council employees would appreciate receiving well deserved recognition, especially when they had gone that extra mile in resolving an issue.

Equally, we need inform SCC when something has not been done adequately enough. Last month, I was dissatisfied with some vegetation cutback works carried by SCC’s highways contractor and asked for these works to be inspected by our SCC community engineer. It was agreed that the cut-back had not been done to the stated criteria and as a result, the contractor was tasked to carry out the works again to the required standard. Details can be found here: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/about/give-feedback-or-make-a-complaint/ Devolution talks with Government In July, the Government wrote to councils setting out its ambition to make available to county areas the kind of devolved decision-making powers and public funding currently enjoyed by larger cities and urban areas. This is part of the Government’s Levelling Up agenda and will see a White Paper published in the coming months. Public sector leaders in Suffolk welcome early discussions with Ministers about a possible devolution deal for Suffolk. In a joint letter sent to Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, the leaders of all of Suffolk’s six councils and Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Suffolk has already demonstrated its credibility as a place where Government will find strong and ambitious delivery partners.

“The Suffolk Public Sector Leaders (SPSL) group…has a track record of effective partnership working. These robust relationships enable more innovative ways of working, including exploring opportunities for devolution as part of a County Deal.

“Suffolk…is an ideal place to help Government demonstrate how levelling up can work in diverse geographies. Suffolk has a strong offer to make to Government and we would welcome early discussions with MHCLG Ministers to explore proposals for a County Deal ahead of the White Paper being published.”

It was also stated that Suffolk’s Leaders have invested over £9 million of pooled Business Rates to deliver these recovery priorities and help Suffolk build back better. LED Streetlighting SCC and Bouygues Energies & Services (Bouygues E&S) have started work replacing 43,400 street lighting lanterns in Suffolk with LED lanterns. They have joined forces to create a flagship partnership with the aim of reducing energy, minimising light pollution, bringing down ongoing maintenance costs for the Authority. The upgrade of the lighting system will allow lights to be switched on or off and dim individual or groups of lights. This smart technology will increase the control SCC has over its power consumption, which will further reduce costs and will also automatically flag any lights that are not working.

SCC is responsible for the maintenance and energy of over 60,000 streetlights and 9,500 illuminated signs and bollards across Suffolk. There are also over 10,500 streetlights owned by other authorities, including borough, district, town or parish councils which the county council maintains on their behalf. SCC expects to reduce its annual electricity costs on these assets by around 76%, saving more than £1.7m per year.

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) Refuse lorries Carbon emissions reduced by up to 90% - In August, Babergh begun their transfer over to HVO of its fleet of 35 waste lorries and will be followed by its smaller public realm and housing services vehicles. By ditching diesel, we will see a significant reduction in pollutant emissions from their fleet, with up to a 90% reduction in CO2. It will also support a circular economy, as the certified sustainable HVO fuel is solely produced from waste cooking oil. Before HVO, the fleet represented just over a quarter (26%) of the councils' total CO2 emissions, approximately 880 tonnes per year – which will now reduce immediately.

This move forms a major step in their Carbon Reduction Management Plan, which sets out how net zero carbon emissions aim to be achieved by 2030. With HVO, we are dramatically reducing our council’s total emissions by just over a quarter, and working towards Babergh’s greener, brighter and healthy future. Babergh is among the first rural councils to take this leap into carbon reduction.

HVO fuel is odourless and biodegradable, and provides: • Up to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions • Up to 30% reduction in Nitrogen Oxide emissions • Up to 86% reduction in Particulate Matter Business Innovation Support Scheme (BISS) Independent businesses on and off the high street can benefit from a new grant scheme designed to support business growth and innovation. The BISS launched

by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, has four different funding streams which can be used by businesses to deliver a range of improvements to their business, including: • Growth and increased Productivity Fund • Enterprise and Innovation Fund • High Street Premises Enhancement Fund • Environmental Sustainability Fund The grant value will be up to £2.5k for each of the funds except the Enterprise and Innovation Fund which will have a maximum limit of £5k. The grants can be used to enable growth and innovation, create, and sustain jobs, access training and advice as well as allow businesses to react and become resilient to the everchanging business landscape. In addition, the grants can be used to improve business frontages and disabled access, invest in green solutions to improve environmental outcomes, and develop new technology-based business solutions.

BISS will be allocated over the next three years with a total of £300,000 being distributed to businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk. The scheme reflects Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils commitment to supporting small and medium sized businesses, which make up 99.6% of the registered businesses in the Districts. These grants will allow businesses to introduce new technologies, improved environmental solutions as well as investing in staff training and new jobs. This scheme will be run over the next three years and will help businesses navigate through the ongoing economic challenges they are facing.

Parish Council Set out below are the main matters dealt with during the Parish Council meeting of 25 August 2021.

• Public Forum A parishioner reported that the textile bank at the Recycling Centre was full; the Clerk would contact the supplier to see if a larger bank could be provided.

• District Council report With regard to the ‘Help Suffolk Say Thanks’ initiative, the Clerk would ask whether the village as a whole could have a badge, rather than an individual. She would also request confirmation that when parking charges were introduced in Hadleigh, the first hour would be free of charge.

• Flooding in Layham Road The Clerk reported that Hadleigh Town Clerk had confirmed Suffolk Highways would carry out remedial work in Layham Road near the Rugby Club by 9 September 2021.

• Speeding As reported at the last meeting, the posts for the SID devices were in place; the devices had now been received. Once the devices were in place, a launch date would be agreed.

• Village Cleans It was agreed not to hold an organised event in the autumn, but a community email would be sent out reminding parishioners that the litter-picking equipment was available to borrow. A ‘spring clean’ would be held in 2022.

Merchant Navy Day 03.09.2021 Merchant Navy Day is intended to raise public awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on seafarers. This campaign invites Councils and Local Authorities to fly the Red Ensign – the official flag of the UK Merchant Navy – on prominent flagpoles.

The flag was seen on the flagpole on the tower of our village church – raised as usual by our resident (retired) merchant seaman John Cryer.

His may be the last time you see a flag on the tower as the pole has been pronounced unsafe!

Green team Litter picking We are looking forward to resuming our organised Village Spring Clean next March. In the meantime, this is to remind you that litter pickers and high-vis jackets are available on loan to individuals, along with bags for rubbish. Mummy Owl was hiding in the lane on the way to playgroup, and the children had great fun finding her on their way!

On the second week, the children had some very special parcels from the zoo (inspired by 'Dear Zoo') with a letter of clues they would guess which animal would be inside! They're very good at guessing!

Next week, we will be focusing on colours. The children can look for colours around playgroup and the lane, based on the colour of the day! Which leads us to noticing the leaves on the trees changing colours ready for the autumn and to us celebrating the harvest and farming season!

Building the stack The first photograph is from the 1930s of a reaper cutting the ripe cereal. Older readers will remember the tractor-drawn reaper cutting the cereal stalks after which they were bound into sheaves before being collected and built into a stack in the farmyard (see second photograph). The stack would be thatched to keep it dry until a travelling threshing machine was available to come round and thresh the grain free from the ears.

You would be mistaken, if on arrival in Hadleigh, you thought that you had entered a run down, poor economically, depressed backwater, that had lost investment and interest in its appearance. Entering the Town from the B1070 Via Bridge Street one is met by the abandoned state of Babergh's offices, weeds growing from the guttering, paint flaking from the windows and weeds not only along the road but up through the pavement.

Coming in from Lower Layham across Toppesfield Bridge a similar view of decay and weeds on the roadside. From Upper Layham down Benton Street a similar picture of weeds on the pavements that in places are almost overgrown by nettles. Every way you come into Hadleigh the verges are overgrown and the gutters full of weeds!

Reading the September issue of The Hadleigh Community News, there are several references to this, From Jane Haylock in the ‘Letters to the Editor’.

Reference to the ‘poor state of the Car Parks’ in Hadleigh Steering Group August meeting. Even a suggestion in ‘Letter from Layham’ that funding could be used to tidy up the pavement between Layham and Hadleigh!

We pay hard earned money in our council Tax to Babergh District Council, What are they doing with it? Buying more properties for their Portfolio? Topping up their over inflated Pension Pots? Awarding themselves and the Councillors pay rises? It is not being spent on looking after our Historic Town, so where is it going?

I am a female, in my 40s and of medium build. Due to a number of health issues, since C19 was declared a Pandemic, I’ve remained largely in isolation and am still extremely restricted with my movement; and have to wear a surgical grade face mask and latex gloves when I am around other people (vaccinated or otherwise) even when outside. During the past 18 months I have only left home around 10 times for anything other than medical appointments, a funeral and having food loaded into my car. One of these rare occasions was on Tuesday 31-Aug-21, when I visited the cashpoint at Morrisons in Hadleigh.

When I arrived, I reverse parked in the remaining empty Disabled Parking Bay, set my Blue Badge time-clock and clearly displayed it alongside my Blue Badge in the driver's side of my windscreen, AS IS LAW. I put on a new mask and gloves and donned my bag. I then slid out of my car, shut the door (whilst leaning on the door behind) and locked the car.

As I have no balance, I cannot walk straight nor stand unaided; needing support every couple of steps to rest and stay upright. I used the cashpoint (at appropriate distances from the few people ahead); again, as I have no balance, standing "unaided" is also extremely difficult, but when finished I "walked" back to my car in my usual “crablike” manner. As I got within a metre of my car, I unlocked it with the electronic key and gladly leaned onto it and slid in. (This took no more than 10 minutes.)

Once in, I removed mask and gloves and binned. And proceeded to wipe down every single thing I had just touched with disinfectant wipes; as you can imagine, this process can take some time. After no more than 20 minutes spent at Morrisons in all, I removed my Blue Badge from the windscreen and drove home without incident.

Imagine my horror and despair when I had a knock on the door an hour or so later, from a young Police Officer. A "concerned" member of the public had called and reported that I was drink driving! Suffice to say that we both apologised about wasted time, and embarrassment shown.

From my detailed account, I am clearly of no threat to anyone to approach, especially from a "safe" distance. By simply asking "Are you alright madam?", the usual kindly response of "Oh, yes I'm disabled. Thank you." would’ve been received and saved wasted Police time and embarrassment for all. From a basic human concern and kindness viewpoint alone, is it not best to ask anyone clearly not functioning as “per the norm” if they are alright - what has happened to our humanity?

Dear Sir The Lockdown Exhibition at St Mary's Church on 30th August 2021 was well attended by exhibitors the public delighted to see what many were were doing to keep occupied.

I had carried out brickwork rebuilding and repointing at Benton End House garden and elsewhere in Hadleigh. I brought photographs of repointed brickwork and also some degraded bricks, only a part of their original size which I replaced with suitable intact soft red bricks. A few people told me of walls that had been overgrown with ivy so stability was affected resulting in substantial rebuild costs.

If the ivy had been removed earlier walls could may well restored by re-pointing at minimal cost. There is an article on the Internet about ‘Damage to buildings (by ivy) allowed it to grow out of control. causing damage to brickwork and particularly the mortar holding the bricks’.

Ivy, which I removed, had grown on many tombstones in St Mary's and HURC's grounds. I recently found some part of a boundary wall between St Mary's Churchyard and adjoining premises was also badly affected by ivy. I have yet to observe the extent of vegetation on the far side of this wall to fully assess the condition of all of this brickwork and stability or otherwise.

The Great Wall of Hadleigh Many people walk past our 150-year-old wall in Pound Lane. Local Hadleigh character, 87-year-old John Cunningham took on the long task of repointing (using lime mortar in keeping with the surrounding area). During the repointing, it became locally known as the ‘Great Wall of Hadleigh’. John enjoyed working on the wall and received numerous comments and compliments from passers-by.

He has now completed his task admirably and thinks that the wall will now last another 150 years! Well, done John!

Councillor Fraser advised that the latest Covid-19 figures have just been published and numbers have increased slightly. He will check the national rate rank as this is out of 358 areas but MSDC show as 361.

Councillor Fraser confirmed that the hedgerow on Station Road will be cut on 2nd September 2021.

A query was raised regarding signage for the industrial estate on the A1071 which is obscured by trees and maybe better signage could be put up – Councillor Fraser agreed to meet up to discuss this.

Councillor Fraser was thanked for his help in getting the potholes and resurfacing on Castle Road brought forward.

A question was raised regarding a CIFCO payment of £1.5 million which was deferred and there was no mention of when it would be paid and a further question was raised regarding the £1.5million that has been set aside for the Suffolk Climate Change Emergency Plan and whether this amount is over 9 years and also what plans are included for Hadleigh. These questions are to be emailed to Councillor Fraser and he will provide an answer in due course.

A question was raised about the process to have roads changed to 20mph.

Councillor Dawson mentioned that the Angel Court development has 1-bedroom flats for sale under shared ownership and this should be encouraged for residents of Hadleigh.

HTC21.265 Christmas Tree Expenditure Proposed by Councillor Beer, seconded by Councillor Pryor it was agreed to spend up to £3,070 to purchase up to sixty-five Christmas Trees for Hadleigh High Street Shop fronts, one twenty-five-foot Christmas tree for Hadleigh Market Place, their erection and removal, and the purchase of a new set of external Christmas tree lights for the Market Place Christmas tree to be funded from the Welcome Back Fund.

Town Mayor’s Update I think everybody will agree that Christmas last year was pretty dismal – not just because any chance of festivities with your family ended at midnight on the day, when the new lockdown began, but because even the old Tier 4 restrictions meant that we could not have any kind of public celebration. So the Council has been keen to try to do something more exciting this year, and we have been greatly helped by the Welcome Back Fund, which through Babergh District Council, has enabled us to be a bit more ambitious than usual without it hitting the Town Council’s limited pockets.

The big day will be Saturday the fourth of December. The smaller trees will be put up on frontages in the High Street area during November, and every business and private house that bought a tree last year will this year have one free from the Council. The Town’s own tree will be erected as usual in the market place, with a proper lighting up ceremony at six o’clock, and the singing of carols, accompanied we hope by a brass band. I and Gordon McLeod, the Deputy Mayor, will be judging a competition for the best decorated business and private house in the High Street and surrounding roads, and there will be prizes!

We have applied for a closure of the High Street and the Market Place from the Angel Street roundabout to Duke Street from 1400 until 2200 on the day.

Residents and businesses which will be affected are being sent letters to explain what is going on, and will still have access throughout this time (although parking may be limited). We will have marshals to ensure that safe access is maintained.

The Highways Authority will also be consulting residents and businesses affected.

We very much hope that as many shops as possible will stay open late on the day. The closure is to enable a Christmas shopping market to be held. The stalls will be arranged so that as few businesses as possible have their High Street frontage obscured, and the stalls themselves will open at 1600, and will stay open until 2000, with 2 hours thereafter for clearing away. We are also hoping to have a Victorian fun fair in the car park by the old Barclay’s Bank, and a Santa’s Grotto as well. As an added bonus there will be a craft fair in the Town Hall during the earlier part of the day.

We felt that after last year, people would like as traditional and nostalgic Christmas as possible, and that is what we are hoping to provide. The planning is still underway, but if it all comes together, we very much hope to have a happy day that our whole community can come together to enjoy.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) Patient Survey: Thanks to those of you who responded to the Patient Survey. The results are available on the Practice website and Facebook page (details below). Your comments have been carefully considered. The Health Centre Team will now do their best to address patients’ concerns as far as they are able with the resources they have. Like all GP Practices patient numbers have increased as has demand making it more challenging to offer the services of yesteryear.

Save time – book on line: Take all the stress out of booking an appointment by phone. Use the Practice’s on line booking service instead. To sign in first request an account ID and link in information from Reception. Once you have signed in you will be able to make your future appointments at your own convenience even when the Practice is closed.

Flu Jabs: These have already started with the over 75’s being invited by letter to attend one of the vaccination sessions. The PPG and others will provide volunteers to man the car park and the appropriate areas inside the Practice.

Although the jabs are administered very speedily, there are a large number in this age group so the potential for more cars than spaces in the two car parks is highly likely. If you are able to walk or park your car elsewhere this would go some way to alleviate the congestion. Sadly, the Traffic Wardens do not take a break during the vac sessions so remember to display a parking ticket and avoid a hefty fine.

As with the Covid vac sessions, the cars will be re-routed through the front car park for your safety. Please be a patient patient.

The school has undergone a programme of improvements over the summer, our external cladding has been re-vamped, entrance lobby and offices given a fresh and calming lick of paint as has our Acorn class which is now home to all our KS1 children.

I have just moved to Hadleigh from Essex and am loving the Suffolk life! Prior to teaching I used to fit kitchens and bathrooms in my own family business which means I love Design Technology lessons! My specialism is computing as this is my passion and I have taken on the role of Math Lead which I am excited to get my teeth into. In my previous school I taught Years 3 and 5 and stayed there for 7 years. Whatfield is the 2nd school I have taught in and is much smaller than my last!

I live with my wife Sarah, who also teaches in the school now (drama with her business, Act First) and my 2 children Emilia and Stanley who also attend Whatfield Primary School. I love spending time with my family, walking with my dog Holly, gaming (when I have the time!) and DIY. I have also set up a gym in my garage to get into shape, wish me luck!’

On Saturday 18th September Spokes for Strokes completed their Charity Cycle Ride in aid of The Stroke Unit at Ipswich Hospital and NHS Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Caroline House in Norwich. When Liane Stone suffered a major stroke in October 2019, she received lifesaving treatment and care in both units. Liane, her family and friends wanted to raise £10,000 in recognition of the care she received and Spokes for Strokes was born.

On the day 60 cyclists took part, some completed a round trip of 110 miles between Ipswich and Norwich and other completed 55 miles between Norwich and Ipswich. There was also an army of 35 helpers on the day traveling between both locations to ensure the welfare and safety of the riders.

Extra opportunities for learning and fun at Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School!

At Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School our aim is to ensure that every opportunity is made for all parts of our pupil's days to be the very best they can be. With all children returning to a school after the summer, where they once again were allowed to play with children outside of their bubbles, re-establishing our school buddies and community atmosphere were at the forefront of our minds. As part of this, we have launched our new zone areas at playtimes, to the great delight of the children.

Our zones are supported by our older pupil playleaders and provide the children with opportunities to play with a variety of equipment every playtime. Our zones include: Ball games, creative, quiet, board games, construction and a singing and dancing zone as well as others. Different areas have priority on different days with music heard across the school on Fridays and our outdoor and sensory garden area being extremely well used.

French’s Care Haven Hello to all our readers, Autumn is here and winter is fast approaching, so let’s get a good night out booked in your diaries and come along to our Quiz night at The Ansell Centre in Hadleigh on 20th November for a fish and chip fun quiz night.

As you all know, as well as the rescued animals that we care for, we also combine the animal care with that of people who are having a difficult time in life. For me I have always seen just how animals can be healers and make a difference in companionship and love to someone’s life, if a person is open to it.

In this month’s read I would like to write about a 22 year old young lady that has been under my wing at French’s, working with me and the animals. Lissy has gone through a harrowing time in her life and is coming out the other side in her recovery. I have been given her permission by to write this and I am proud of her in the way she is making such good recovery in her mental and physical strength. Through complete lack of confidence and the bulling that she had going on in her life, Lissy gained a lot of weight and went up to 24 stone. This lead to further bullying, so she went the other way and stopped eating and developed anorexia nervosa, dropping to an alarming 4.1/2 stone!

At this time her body’s organs were under such stress, they had all started to fail. Lissy was told she was just a week away from dying when her gallbladder was removed. She was lucky, very lucky that the damage to her other organs did not kill her. I can now say, that with the help and support she is given the 4 days every week that she comes to Frenchs, along with the metal psychology, to gain positive mental strength that I drummed into her about being strong and not letting others negativity effect you, Lissy is gaining weight and mental strength on a weekly basis. She is now 7 stone and has gained enough strength to do the physical jobs needed up at our farm, which she enjoys.

I strongly advised Lissy to gain her own independence, by taking driving lessons, with the goal of passing and buying a car, she did just that and her test is booked, fingers crossed she will pass first time. Lissy says that her days up the farm with the animals and me are when she is at her happiest. All you here about nowadays is nasty remarks people make towards others on social media, that leads to some people taking their own lives and as someone who has experienced such negative, spiteful, jealous individuals in my own life, I know what it is like.

Fortunately for me I was strong enough to ignore it and if anything it made me more resilient in life, as my love for animals and the work I have been doing with them as a profession for near 50 years now, motivated me through my life to stay focused, keep going, and never give up. Frenchs Care Haven is not just an animal rescue, I have always combined helping people heal and get strong physically and mentally, as well as the animals that have come to me. Attached is a lovely photo of Lissy with Dollymix her favourite horse. Dollymix is 30 years old now and is the sweetest mare and is a perfect friend for Lissy.

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers For our October walk on Saturday 11th we will meet at the Stonehouse Road car park and depart at 0930. We will take a circular route via Rands Farm, Doles Farm, Polstead and Shelley. The exact route is still being worked on so please look at the website for more detail. The walk is a fairly long one of around 10 Miles and at our usual pace will take around 4 hours to complete. The terrain is fairly easy with the usual Suffolk ups and downs.

Everyone is welcome, including very well-behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

Chestnuts Wood Turning Club I am pleased to advise that the Chestnuts are “turning” once again. We meet on the third Thursday of the month at the United Reform Church Hall starting at 7.30pm. Our demonstrators come from all over East Anglia and at our next meeting there will be a demonstration of Pyrography, a technique used to decorate turned objects such as bowls.

So, if you have either taken up turning recently, or want to see how it is done by an expert, we will be pleased to welcome you along to the next club night on 21st October.

Hadleigh Community Forum (Formerly Hadleigh Steering Group) The Hadleigh Community Forum meets on the second Tuesday of each month.

Meeting dates, our Terms of Reference and Minutes are available on request. We share information, explore ideas, facilitate new ventures and events such as Visit Hadleigh, Hadleigh on Show and the Year of the Sheep plus the provision of a new market bench. Representatives attend from the following groups: voluntary social care, community organisations, residents, business Town and District Council.

Anyone is welcome but please let us know if you plan to attend.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday 12th October from 4.15pm to 6.pm in the Social Room at the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre.

September Meeting – Chair Jan Devey The Chair welcomed and thanked everyone for coming. Apologies for absence were given and the previous Minutes were approved. There were no matters arising.

1. STANDARD UPDATES. HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL (HTC) Cheryl Tye, the Manager of Hadleigh Town Council (HTC), updated the group on current Town Council business. Their bid for funding from Babergh District Council (BDC) realised £20k from the Welcome Back Fund. This is to help regenerate the town, post Covid, by 31st March 2022. It will facilitate • 3 promotional ads for the High Street in the East Anglia Daily Times both now and at Christmas. A Hadleigh specific supplement.

• The purchase and installation of the High Street Christmas Trees and a 25 foot Christmas tree in the Market Place. Collection and delivery of the tree has yet to be solved. Jim Wilding said he had farming contacts who could probably assist.

• New Lights around the Market Place which will be part of the ‘lighting up’ event.

Subject to HTC approval this will probably take place on Sat 4th December.

Cheryl outlined the various training programmes currently followed by the new councillors who will be leading committee or working groups. There will also be training for Trustees as HTC is the sole Trustee for the Grand Feoffment. Further updates were:• As the contract for ground maintenance, currently held by Id Verde, will return to BDC, tendering for a new one is underway, effective mid-November. The new contract will include 6 bus shelters and better maintenance of the War Memorial. However, it is Suffolk County Council (SCC), Highways department who is responsible for maintaining the roadside. Unsightly or dangerous growth should be reported via the SCC and BDC websites.

• The contract for the HTC’s bar facilities has been awarded to Prestige Bars.

• The sickly Lime Tree near the vicarage has been removed. Bat boxes and swift boxes will be installed in the area.

• The HTC is negotiating the purchase of the lone telephone box in Church Street. The plan is to fill it with visitor’s information (VI) for use during the winter months when the other VI centre is closed.

• The Emergency Plan which is led by Gordon McLeod is progressing.

• The cemetery extension is available for internment of ashes.

• Temporary loos and showers have been delivered to Layham Sports Block to replace those lost in the fire.

• The Town Hall and Guildhall are open for booking.

VISIT HADLEIGH Jane Snowdon said the Visitors’ Information Centre (VIC) will close for the winter at the end of September. Over 1.000 people i.e visitors, residents of Hadleigh and local villages have made use of their services. Five different exhibitions about the town have been on show throughout the summer.

The ‘Hands Off Hadleigh’ exhibition has taken longer to compile but hopefully it will be possible to enjoy all of them at other venues throughout the winter.

National Heritage Festival, free to explore, from 10th - 19th September will go ahead and the Town Guides are supporting the Festival with free Guided Walks.

Jane urged groups and individuals to use the website to promote their events.

The hanging baskets, part of Hadleigh in Bloom, will come down soon. Thanks to Stuart and his team for making the High Street look so attractive throughout the summer.

The Community Gardeners were able to lift and divide our Cedric Morris irises and give some to Benton End. More help is needed to support the small team of volunteers who maintain the Town’s gardens.

Stuart said we owe Jane a huge debt of gratitude for successfully training all the VI volunteers. The website and VIC centre bring a lot of people into the Town who not only spend their money in the High Street but often return. Sadly this aspect is not sufficiently appreciated by many of the businesses. Cheryl also thanked Stuart for the hanging baskets.

TIDY TOWN Elaine Pulham reported that the Tidy Towners have resumed their work in small groups from Monday to Friday with sociable refreshments afterwards. There are less discarded PPE masks but dog poo and bags are still around. Pet owners need to be more responsible. Jill Mason felt praise rather than negative comments were in order. It is clear that many whingers had never experienced other Practices to make comparisons.

Unlike many other Practices, the Hadleigh Boxford Practice is fortunate to have so many GP’s. Although many patients would like to see things return to pre-Covid approach, Mike Turley reminded the group that the initial triage arrangements plus telephone and video appointments had already started before the pandemic. This was further developed for Patients’ safety. However, in spite of all the changes it is still possible to see a doctor face to face.

ST MARY’S CHURCH St. Mary’s Church Warden, Jim Wilding, showed the group a scale model of the Church which included the planned changes to make the building fit for use in the 21st century. This iconic Hadleigh landmark is the largest covered space in Hadleigh. It is the 5th largest church in Suffolk and one of the 40 most important churches in the UK. The 2020 Quinquennial Inspection identified £750k worth of works was needed. Most urgent was the lead on the South aisle which was patched in 2020. Other repairs included the installation of guttering round the base of the spire to prevent rain damaging the stonework. This work, plus professional fees costing £160k, was funded from the sale of the Deanery’s Marieschi painting.

The painting’s own fascinating story will eventually be made into a booklet.

Martin Thrower was the first Dean to see the need for change in St Mary’s, not only to accommodate the work of the Porch Project, but also for its future much wider use. The last re-ordering of the building was carried out by the Victorians, 160 years ago. John Parr and more recently, Jo Delfgou, continue the work. Jim detailed the other planned changes and the costs involved; some £4m. He said the future of St Mary’s was in everyone’s hands not just the Church’s. Although they will use professionals for national funders they desperately need help from everyone if they are to raise enough money to effect all the proposed changes.

2. TERMS OF REFERENCE Mike Turley requested to change the name of the Hadleigh Steering Group. He outlined the history of the group from its foundation by Brian Riley in 2014. Since then it has a chequered past with some labelling it a ‘talking shop’. Mike proposed the name be changed to Hadleigh Community Forum. A discussion followed as attendees were both for and against the name change. A vote was taken with the resulting 11 in favour and 3 against. The motion was carried in favour of a name change. The current Terms of Reference will be circulated ahead of the next meeting when changes will be discussed.

3. A.O.B Jan Devey, who is in contact with BDC, welcomed the clearance of weeds from most of Magdalen Car Park. She was disappointed that no effective, less unsightly solution had been found for the protruding tree roots.

Glenn Abbassi had photos of the overflowing paper containers in the Magdalen Road car park together with smashed glass around the bottle bank. Stuart said unfortunately local users make the mess. They seem unaware that any rubbish left outside the official containers makes them ‘fly tippers’ and subject to prosecution if caught.

Jobie West said that a campervan was parked in Friars Road for a long time.

Parking issues are now in the hands of BDC and not the police. The group discussed all aspects of the parking in the Town from forthcoming charges to incorrect parking.

It was agreed to temporarily postpone speakers at the meetings.

Richard Fletcher of the Hadleigh Society advertised their forthcoming exhibition entitled “Hadleigh’s Overlooked Heritage”. This will be on display on 17th and 18th September from 10pm to 4pm in the Hadleigh Town Hall. Dining Room. The hope is that members of the public will use this opportunity to identify unique, iconic buildings which are not ‘listed’ but are a significant part of the Town’s heritage.

Jill Mason of the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance (HDAA) advertised a family “Tea, Cake and Sharing Event” at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre on 21st September.

Richard Fletcher will be chairing the October meeting on Tuesday 12th October at 4.15pm. In the absence of Jess Janas, Jan Devey will be taking the Minutes. A Chair is needed for January 2022.

Amongst many positives, we were extremely pleased that the Inspector recognised how all staff contribute to providing a broad and balanced curriculum, accessible to all pupils.

Hadleigh Community Choir sings again!

Yes, the choir even a pandemic can’t keep down for long! We’re back, and rehearsing again every Thursday at 7.30 pm at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh. Our first session attracted an amazing 48 people, with many new faces coming along to see what it’s like. If you want to see for yourself we welcome everyone whether you’ve sung before or not, or if you’re just a superstar in your own bathroom, and we sing a wide range of songs from pop to show songs to some beautiful sacred pieces and everything in between. For example, to ease ourselves and newcomers back in to it after such a long interval, we’re having fun with Blue Moon, Bring Me Sunshine, Lean On Me, Moon River, The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Kalinka.

We’re all there to enjoy ourselves, and led by our musical director we do aim to make the best sound we possibly can, usually performing two concerts each year but we’ll have to see how that goes for the time being. You don’t need to be able to read music and very few of the singers do, and the music team put all the words and the singing parts on our website so you can get more familiar with the songs at home too. So if you just fancy seeing for yourself, come along on Thursday or you may know someone in the choir to come with. Either way you’ll be very welcome.

What does that mean in real terms? The biggest issue would be excessive tyre wear to one or more parts of the tyre, again not always obvious as it can be parts of the tyre that you cannot readily see. The majority of modern cars and vans have advanced braking and stability systems, you may know it as ABS brakes and ESP Electronic Stability Programme). These systems will counteract any chassis adjustments that have changed during the life of the car. To maintain the correct operation of all of these safety systems and the driveability of your vehicle it is important to have correct wheel alignment settings.

Hadleigh Evening WI After that very long break, like so many groups The Women’s Institute in Hadleigh is looking forward to getting together again at their monthly meetings. The view of the WI among many is that of a bunch of menopausal women making jam and knitting. Far from it! (though I guess some may be good at doing these).

We hold meetings every third Tuesday at 7.30pm in the library seminar room, the next is on October 19th. There is always an invited speaker or fun activity, as well as the opportunity for making new friends and catching up with old over a cuppa.

Just a few examples of past talks: ‘Can I take eggs into Britain’ - working in a British embassy overseas; Gemstones and pearls; Reflexology; Nursing in Yemen; Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds; Working as a courier bringing stem cells or bone marrow from abroad for leukaemia patients. Each talk is interesting, informative and more often than not amusing. Everyone has a voice and we look forward to welcoming new members from all age groups. (sorry gentlemen, we are the Women’s Institute, but who knows what could happen in the future.

The 2nds started the final round of games in 3rd place in Division 5, and knew that only six points were needed to guarantee 3rd place and promotion. But Adam Miles's side ended the day as champions, courtesy of a nervy one-wicket win over Great Bromley, and the helping hands of East Bergholt and Needham Market both losing, the latter by a single run. It was all that the team deserved after a hard-fought campaign when the runs flowed for many, with Justin Toombs leading the way with 656 runs including seven 50s, but there were also strong seasons for Arran Tampion and Taylor Locke, who both recorded their maiden 100s for the club in the previous week's run fest with Easton. Oliver Clark took 24 wickets and younger brother Matthew 17, and Humphrey Coysh was also an impressive new addition to the bowling line-up.

After a long spell of declining fortunes for the Twos, this is a The 1st XI had to settle for 3rd place in Division 1, but can still look back with some satisfaction on the season. Despite not having as stellar a summer as 2019, Kudzai Maunze was still the top run scorer and wicket taker with 481 runs and 23 wickets, and took some stunning catches to change games. Marlon Dias and Matt Kent also weighed in with the bat while the wickets were fairly evenly spread between Dom Manthorpe, Lewis Millions, Kyle Tanner, Tom Piddington and Dan Shanks. A few games were lost which should not have been; but there were also some quite exceptional wins over Mistley and champions Witham - indeed, Ben Wallis's side were the only team to defeat the Essex side who went on to clinch promotion to the East Anglian Premier League.

The Sunday side finished the final weekend in style with a terrific win at Castle Hedingham, unquestionably our best of the season. We made merry to rack up 238-8, our highest total of the summer, and then Olly Clark (3-36) and Toby Toombs (4-48) bowled brilliantly at the death to clinch a six-run win. Despite relegation fears, we finished in 3rd place thanks to that result. It was a shame that we could only complete 9 games due to the withdrawals of Castle and Lakenheath, but there were lots of encouraging performances from youngsters like Jack Auld and Rhys Willings, and lots to look forward to next year, including captain Dave Levitt's maiden 50!

On Sunday August 29th our family were honoured, in conjunction with our President Gary Girling, to be able to host a match in memory of my father Terry, who many Hadleigh people will know not just for his contribution to the cricket club over more than 50 years but also to the town through a number of local organisations. Many former players returned to don the whites and it was a truly memorable day. We would like to thank everyone who supported the day and helped to make it such a success.

It has been a challenging season in many respects, with Covid restrictions in place for much of the time and games lost through the 'pingdemic', but towards the end of the summer we saw some normality return with the full opening of facilities. We were grateful, in the end, to have a full season. Winter well, and see you hopefully in 2022.

Lots of familiar faces have returned but we have also welcomed many new children who have settled in fantastically already. As the football season marches on all 4 senior teams have seen some mixed fortunes with their results. Our Under 18's in their first year together as a team have found life hard in their opening matches still waiting to get a win, but credit goes to the players for turning out each week for training and matches putting in a workmanlike effort into every match played without dropping their head.

Our newly formed S.I.L Brettsider team saw their season get off to a bad start with the opposition calling off their first two matches, but better luck on 4th September when they recorded a 4-1 win over Stowupland Falcons. The 11th saw an enthralling match against Westerfield in front of a large crowd, going 2-0 down early on, then pulling a goal back, Westerfield then made it 4-1 before we rallied to level the score 4-4 and a deserved point. They play their home matches on the Layham Road pitch with no admission so if you want to watch a free match you know where to go! The Reserves matches have seen 1 postponement (by the opposition) 1 lost, 1 draw and 1 win.

The First Team results have seen an early exit from the F.A. Cup losing 1-0 away to Mulbarton, a goalless draw at home to Walsham, before 2 trips to the coast, firstly to top 6 side Kirkley where in a competitive match we came away with the points in a 1-0 win, back the next week to 2nd placed Gorleston where after going behind in the early stages we got level at half time, taking the lead early in the second half, but Gorleston threw everybody and everything at us including the kitchen sink and with minutes to go they levelled to see a 2-2 draw in an entertaining match. A 5-0 home defeat against Long Melford certainly took the edge off things before our F.A.Vase match at Walthamstow where we matched them in all areas in another competitive match, with the score at 0-0 at full time a penalty shootout took place with keeper Nick Punter saving yet another spot kick to see us through 4-3 and a match against Redbridge in the next round.

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice I’m going back to university and moving into a shared house with friends for the first time. Although I’m excited, I’m also a bit nervous as I’ve never rented from a private landlord before. The house looked fine when we viewed it, but that was months ago now and I’ve heard horror stories about dodgy landlords for student houses. What should I look out for when I move in?

Renting a house with friends is usually an exciting time. Most landlords are reasonable people who look after their properties and tenants well, but it’s always a good idea to know your rights.

Here’s a checklist of things to do when you first move in: ● Make sure you have your landlord’s contact details. Your landlord is responsible for keeping your home in good condition and arranging repairs when they’re needed. They should be your first point of contact if anything goes wrong. ● Make sure your deposit is protected. Check that your landlord has given you information about the scheme used to protect your deposit. ● Take photos on the day you move in. It’s also worth asking your landlord or letting agent for an inventory, to check everything is in order. Use this to note down any problems and the condition of the furniture, kitchen, carpets, bathroom etc. ● Check if you’re in a ‘house in multiple occupation’. If you’re living with two or more people who aren’t part of your family, and share a toilet, bathroom or kitchen with you, this is considered an HMO. This means your landlord must make sure your home meets certain safety standards. This includes making sure smoke alarms are installed and there’s a safe fire exit. The landlord must also ensure shared areas such as staircases and corridors are clean and in good repair. Some HMOs need to be licensed by the council - if you’re unsure whether this applies to your home, check with your local council. ● Make sure your landlord gives you: a copy of the Gas Safety Certificate, an Energy Performance Certificate and a How to Rent leaflet. ● Understand your tenancy agreement. It’s important to know who’s responsible for paying bills and what to do if there are any changes, like if someone wants to move out. The Citizens Advice website explains the different ways shared accommodation can be organised.

If you encounter a problem with the property, contact your landlord. They might not already be aware as they shouldn’t come in without your permission. If it relates to disrepair, for example if your heating system fails or there’s damp in the property, it’s best to put this in writing so that you have evidence if you need it later.

If your landlord is unresponsive or refuses to help, contact your student services or local Citizens Advice service for support. In serious cases, for example if your health or safety is at risk, you may be advised to contact the council.

Ultra-low emission HVO fleet takes to the road Babergh and Mid Suffolk are the first rural UK councils to switch their fleet to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) – slashing carbon emissions by up to 90% and supporting the councils’ carbon neutral aims.

Starting from mid September, the councils’ waste fleet has begun its transfer over to HVO. Its 35 waste lorries are the first to transfer, and will be followed by its smaller public realm and housing services vehicles. By ditching diesel, they will see a significant reduction in pollutant emissions from their fleet*, with up to a 90% reduction in CO2. It will also support a circular economy, as the certified sustainable HVO fuel** is solely produced from waste cooking oil.

The move was approved by the councils’ cabinets in January this year, and forms a major step in their Carbon Reduction Management Plan, which sets out how net zero carbon emissions aim to be achieved by 2030. Before HVO, the fleet represented just over a quarter (26%) of the councils' total CO2 emissions, approximately 880 tonnes per year – which will now reduce immediately.

Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, cabinet member for environment at Babergh District Council, said: “This is an exciting moment and a major step forward in achieving the council’s ambitions as set out in our Carbon Reduction Management Plan. Our fleet and crews enable us to carry out some of our most visible work such as collecting your bin. With HVO, we are dramatically reducing our council’s total emissions by just over a quarter, and working towards Babergh’s greener, brighter and healthy future. Furthermore, I am immensely proud that we are among the first rural councils to take this leap into carbon reduction.”

Cllr Jessica Fleming, cabinet member for environment at Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “Helping to create bright and healthy futures for the next generation, while protecting the environment, is one of our most important jobs. Moving to a greener and cleaner fuel like HVO, brings us significantly and immediately closer to achieving our ambition to be net zero carbon by 2030. While we can’t create a cleaner and healthier environment on our own - we hope that by being one of the first rural UK councils, along with Babergh, to move our fleet to HVO, we can lead by example with others encouraged to follow.”

HVO fuel provided the councils with a near-immediate and efficient way to reduce emissions. This is because, aside from slightly increased fuel costs and new tanks, the transition from traditional diesel fuel to HVO requires minimal changes to the councils’ existing fleet. The new fuel will cost between 10-15% more than using conventional diesel. However, by using HVO, lower maintenance costs and longer engine life for the vehicles are expected.

On Sunday, the 4th of September the North Essex County Bowls Federation held their final of the National Durham Centenary Trophy at Sudbury Bowls club, Quay Lane in Sudbury. It was without doubt a lovely day for a game of bowls. This was the end of the competitive bowling season outdoors and Sudbury Bowls club hosted Castle Hedingham Bowls club versus Radwinter B.C. from Essex.

Lawn bowls may be making a bit of a comeback and is becoming more interesting for some of our younger sports men and women. This was a mixed triples game where each bowler has only two bowls and the game is of 25 ends, meaning each bowler bowls two bowls 25 times and the team with the highest number of points is the winner. On this occasion it was Radwinter who with a cumulative score of 97 to Castle Hedingham’s 90 won the Centenary Cup. Lawn bowls is played at many outdoor clubs in the Essex/Suffolk area. The season is from late April through to end September when the Indoor game takes over. Sudbury Bowls club is one of a small number of clubs who have both Outdoor greens as well as a 3 rink indoor bowling facility.

Bowls can be, not only a competitive sport which helps you to get exercise (a typical 18 ends of bowls means you walk around 2km) but also is a social meeting place with existing friends or where you might even make new friends. Why not give bowls a try?
