The annual report of a philanthropic organization is similar to that of a public corporation. Both survey highlights of the previous year and share financial information. I would argue that the main difference is that while a company has to demonstrate value, the focal point of Hadassah’s annual report is values.

Hadassah has been serving the Jewish people, Israel and the Zionist enterprise for 105 years. Few organizations—business or philanthropic—survive that long. Products or programs may evolve as the world advances, but most businesses ultimately close. Nonprofits built on values may have staying power, but they need to be agile enough to hold on to their mission while riding the waves of change.

Medicine, education and welfare will always need improvement. Within months of its founding, Hadassah began building the health care infrastructure of the future Jewish state, and within a few years we laid the foundations for medical and nursing education, to be followed by child rescue.

Our parallel mission was to give women an equal leadership role in Jewish communal affairs and in the Zionist movement. Our reputation testifies to the success of our century-plus effort.

In 2016, the Hadassah Medical Organization remained the pacesetter of Israel’s health system and a beacon to the world. To cite just a few examples, our physicians and researchers advanced their groundbreaking work in treating ALS, on age-related macular degeneration and on the Zika virus.

The Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower on our Ein Kerem campus opened 13 new operating rooms in its underground complex. For the first time since the Tower was dedicated in 2012, occupancy reached (and sometimes surpassed) 100 percent.

Hadassah is influential, but we are always looking to amplify our voice. In 2016, we launched the Coalition for Women’s Health Equity—starting with 14 women’s and health organizations (since expanded to 23)—to exponentially increase our efforts to advance public policy. In our own grassroots work, we extended our Day in the District/Date with the State initiatives that send members to meet with their national and state representatives to advocate on health and equity issues and for a secure Israel.

For Hadassah, 2016 was exhilarating, full of challenges and successes. We did the unprecedented and the routine, responded to the heartbreaking and the uplifting. And by adhering to our values, we reached the end of the year stronger than when we began.

Hadassah stands as a beacon for health and wellness for more than 8 million people in Israel, fueled by the values of 6 million Jews 6,000 miles away, spread out across the United States. From the shores of the US to the hills of Jerusalem, we intersect around a mission of healing, caring and developing solutions to save lives.

A recent study by the nonprofit group Brand Israel demonstrated that among young Americans, positive attitudes toward Israel are in free fall, with a notable decline among those of Jewish descent. The study’s author stresses that, to address this problem, our focus must be to educate more effectively about the goodness of the Israeli people and their commitment to their fellow citizens, rather than technological advances or political processes.

What better example than Hadassah. In 2016, over 35,000 operations were performed at Hadassah hospitals on Palestinians, Arab Israelis and Jewish Israelis. During the wave of Jerusalem terrorist killings in early 2016, victim and perpetrator were brought to Hadassah hospitals together, handled with parity during their stays by medical teams that mirrored the diversity of their country.

Hadassah hospitals’ expression of egalitarian concerns and caring extends beyond hospital walls. For years, Hadassah has supported the unparalleled work of Youth Aliyah where, in 2016, 1,500 at-risk children were educated, socialized and coached in three Youth Aliyah villages, set on new paths of personal and societal success.

One of our greatest 2016 initiatives is our partnership with the Shalom Hartman Institute, which speaks directly to the concerns about Israel voiced in the Diaspora. Responding to the need for education about the Middle East, our new partnership trains our leaders to create productive dialogue in their own communities about the Palestinian-Israeli relationship. Hadassah volunteers are being prepared to address false impressions that have been publicized, perpetrated, promoted. This new cohort of Hadassah women will now work in communities throughout the United States to lead the type of open dialogue so crucial for communication and understanding.

We continued in 2016 to distribute our “How to Talk About Israel” guide, which provides tips on how to respond to difficult questions and challenges that come up in conversations about BDS, anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.

With talking points and historical context, the guide is a critical tool to help address growing disaffection among younger American Jews.

Our challenge is to raise public awareness about the many ways in which Israel exhibits its humanitarianism, caring and support for all populations.

And, our responsibility is to ensure that we shout from the rooftops about Hadassah’s special role in finding successful cures that can help people around the world and for being a model humanitarian institution. In order to do so, we have raised our public profile in our communications efforts through our website, social media, advertising and public appearances.

I deeply appreciate the time you’re taking to learn about Hadassah’s powerful impact. I hope Power in Motion: 2016 A Year in Review inspires in you the same awe I feel every day in the Power of Women Who DO—and how much we can accomplish together, thanks to the support of donors like you.

In 2018 the State of Israel will celebrate 70 years of Independence. The Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) will also celebrate a milestone— 100 years since Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc. had the vision to establish a hospital in Jerusalem. The newborn State of Israel had many challenges, but it didn’t have to create a medical infrastructure. Hadassah had already done that. The doctors and nurses who fled from the Holocaust and reached Palestine had been integrated into hospitals and clinics. A professional well-baby mother and child clinic system, Tipat Halav, could be turned over to the new State. Seventy years later we have so many accomplishments to be proud of.

From the beginning, Hadassah has demonstrated vision and flexibility.

We are constantly evaluating the present in order to improve. We’re not afraid to make changes.

HADASSAH MEDICAL ORGANIZATON DIRECTOR GENERAL PROF. ZEEV ROTSTEIN

I started my tenure at the Hadassah Medical Organization in February 2016.

My first challenge was to increase the level of activity, and I am proud to be able to share with you that we have experienced steady levels of occupancy, often exceeding 100 percent. We carefully studied every parameter, and found new ways to make the hospital even more efficient for an overcapacity patient-load. For example, we decided to move neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery to Level 12 of our Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower, with a combined Intensive Care Unit on the same floor.

Because of the need for more beds for babies and children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, we have moved PICU from its former home on the seventh floor of the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Mother and Child Center to expanded facilities on the second level of the Tower, across the bridge from Mother and Child.

Due to the growing population and greater need for adult hospitalization facilities, the Internal Medicine Departments were shifted from the crowded location in the Round Building to the well-appointed Tower. This allowed us to serve more patients than before and to make them more comfortable. The next step is to restructure the Round Building, opened in 1962, to update and expand it. The physical structure needs to be strengthened, and rooms that were planned for six patients with one bathroom need to be brought up to 21st-century standards. My plan is to add two additional floors so that we will have two state-of-the-art modern facilities on the Ein Kerem campus.

Hadassah’s leadership in neurology was also strengthened by the opening of our Stroke Unit, headed by Professor Ronen Leker. Hadassah’s life-saving ability to quickly ameliorate the impact of strokes has brought hundreds of additional patients to the hospital.

All of these are marks of success and herald a period of expansion and growth that reflects not only a growing population but also renewed energy at Hadassah.

Across town at Hadassah Mount Scopus, we’ve opened a new radiology center with its own MRI, and plans are underway to expand the delivery department and pediatric emergency room, as well as the new rehabilitation center.

As I stated when I took on this challenge, HMO has outstanding physicians; however, the infrastructure today on both campuses is inadequate. My goal is to create Centers of Excellence—building a new Children’s Hospital, a brand-new and enlarged Cancer Center, a Women’s Health Center and a Heart Center, to name just a few.

Together with your ongoing support, Hadassah will continue our mission of healing all the people of Jerusalem and the globe.

• In 2016, Hadassah Mt. Scopus installed a cutting-edge, powerful new MRI, giving patients the comfort and the peace of mind that come with safer, easier exams of the highest quality. Thanks to a wide MRI opening, exams are now far more suitable for individuals with claustrophobia—and for children.

• Two robots were integrated into HMO’s pioneering surgery techniques in 2016: Mazor Robotics Renaissance® Guidance System, a screw placement system that allows spinal implant placement with maximum safety and accuracy, and the Artis Zeego, which provides real-time 3-dimensional imaging during surgical procedures, eliminating the need for presurgery CT scans and post-surgery X-rays.

A Surgical First Saves Life of Newborn Girl In a first-of-its-kind operation, Hadassah surgeons saved the life of a newborn. The baby girl, from an Arab village east of Tel Aviv, was born with omphalocele, in which the intestines develop outside the abdomen. Within 24 hours of her birth, surgeons placed the organs inside her body, closing the wound with a patch invented in Israel for wounded soldiers. For three weeks, the medical team gradually stretched the skin to close the abdomen hole. “We are delighted and optimistic that future surgery won’t be necessary,” said Dr. Dan Arbell, HMO senior pediatric surgeon. “There is no reason why she should not have a full and healthy life.”

In 2016 • The campaign for the 19-story Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower at Ein Kerem is completed (pending outstanding pledges), making HMO home to Israel’s most advanced medical facilities. Its new underground stateof-the-art operating room complex, opened in 2016, is fortified against conventional, chemical or biological attack.

This $30 million OR complex has a level of technology used only by the world’s top-tier hospitals.

• Israel’s first Heart Valve Disease Clinic opens, where patients can undergo cardio catheterization procedures, instead of more invasive open-heart surgeries.

• A clinical trial is underway for a breakthrough stem cell treatment aimed at slowing the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in the Western World.

Early trial data were presented at an international symposium on Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics in Rome, Italy.

Results reveal that the transplanted retinal epithelium cells (RPEs) were successfully engrafted with no major adverse effects and have remained in place for at least a year.

• A new state-of-theart dialysis unit in the Tower provides 1,000 dialysis treatments per month.

• Hadassah Ein Kerem is home to Jerusalem’s only Level 1A trauma unit, where the most serious cases, including terror victims, are often rushed directly. IDF Lieutenant Shachar Ruditi, for example, was treated at Hadassah hospital after a package he was inspecting exploded in his hands. Hadassah surgeons operated on shrapnel wounds and deep cuts, and after 12 days Ruditi was able to return home.

• A new Zika laboratory is established. Using virus samples provided by the American Centers for Disease Control, the lab’s stem cell research shows how Zika attacks a fetus just as nerve cells develop.

Behind the Breakthroughs: HMO Doctors

A patient of Dr. Stepensky, who owes his life to her groundbreaking bone marrow treatment.

Svetlana Izozsimova of the Russian Republic of Chuvash wrote to the world-renowned Dr. Polina Stepensky at Hadassah Ein Kerem’s Pediatric Hematology Department about her toddler grandson, who has osteopetrosis, a fatal disease, also known as “marble bone disease,” that causes bones to solidify like stone. It also causes children to lose their eyesight and hearing, and their heads to become misshapen.

Osteopetrosis is common in Chuvash. Svetlana, a cleaning lady, raised enough money to bring her grandson to Hadassah for a bone marrow transplant that saved his life. Word spread, and 15 more Chuvash children have been treated at Hadassah. Svetlana’s grandson, now 5, returned for his two-year check-up. His prognosis? Excellent, thanks to Dr. Stepensky’s groundbreaking bone marrow transplants.

In its January 11, 2016 issue, JAMA Neurology published the findings of the Phase 1/2 and Phase 2a ALS Clinical Trials conducted by Dr. Dimitrios Karussis, HMO Senior Neurologist.

These clinical trials, which began in 2011, utilized an innovative adult stem cell transplantation treatment involving the harvesting of stem cells from the patient’s own bone marrow, and enhancing them with Brainstorm Cell Therapeutics’ patented NurOwn®. The product is then injected directly into the patient’s cerebrospinal fluid with a technique developed by the Hadassah investigators.

26 ALS patients participated in the trials at HMO, in which there were no major adverse effects, and 87% of patients showed slowing in the progression of the disease, as measured by their respiratory function or their general motor disability.

A number of international centers have observed the Hadassah trials, and three US medical centers—Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA; University of Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Worcester, MA; and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN— ran a Phase 2 double-blind placebo controlled study using Dr. Karussis’ protocol from the trials at Hadassah Medical Organization.

Every Beat Counts: Hadassah’s Heart Health Program® educates women about heart disease and the critical differences in the way

For the second year, Hadassah sponsored Every Step Counts: Hadassah’s Walking Program, to raise awareness of heart disease and encourage daily exercise—one of the best preventative measures against heart disease. Over

1,000 PEOPLE WALKED 453 MILLION STEPS, OR 226,686 MILES, THE EQUIVALENT OF 9 TIMES AROUND THE EARTH. FRIEND-TO-FRIEND FUNDRAISING MORE THAN DOUBLED FROM 2015.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROFILE

provided stories from Hadassah’s Research in Service to Humanity campaign, highlighting the pioneering research at Hadassah Medical Organization.

Hadassah is an Alliance Partner of the American Heart Association (AHA), together developing print

materials for Every Bite Counts: Hadassah’s Nutrition Program, launching in 2017.

As part of a national partnership, ten heart health events were conducted at Jewish Community Centers (JCCs) across the country in 2016, and 20 locations will be added in 2017.

What attracted you to Hadassah?

I fell in love with Israel when I was a little girl at Sunday school and Mrs. Tobias from the Sisterhood came to collect our tzedakah for Israel and tell us stories about the halutzim (pioneers) rebuilding the Land of Israel. Hadassah is first and foremost a Zionist organization, and I have always identified with that.

What’s it like to be a nurse and a Hadassah Health & Wellness advocate?

I am so proud to be a nurse. It gives me enormous pleasure that the knowledge I share about health and wellness can benefit so many Hadassah members. Research shows heart disease to be the #1 killer of women. Women’s symptoms and warnings present differently than men’s. With education, we can help many reduce their risk and lead healthier lives—and be active members of Hadassah longer!

You’re co-president of the Hadassah Florida Atlantic Nurses Council. Tell us about the Council.

Forming the Nurses Councils brought many new members to the organization. Nurses have always been educators. In 2016, members of our Nurses Councils have spoken to groups about breast cancer awareness, heart health and research.

Why is speaking at community events as part of Hadassah Speaker’s Bureau so important?

Hadassah has had two focal points: supporting our Israeli hospitals, and the education and involvement of American women. Hadassah’s two great hospitals in Jerusalem serve the Middle East and the world with the best medical care to all who need it, with cutting-edge medical equipment and superior staff. My goal in 2016 was to reach and teach members about the basics of HMO’s stem cell research.

Why is HMO’s ground-breaking stem cell research so critical?

Their revolutionary stem cell research has put HMO in the forefront of all other medical organizations worldwide. They are finding answers to treat and cure diseases that plague all of mankind.

ZIONISM AND HADASSAH HAVE BEEN INEXTRICABLY CONNECTED FOR OVER A CENTURY. HAS THE MEANING OF ZIONISM CHANGED IN THAT TIME? HOW IS ZIONISM RELEVANT FOR CONTEMPORARY JEWS LIVING OUTSIDE OF ISRAEL? FROM COLLEGE CAMPUSES TO THE UNITED NATIONS, THE DISCUSSION OF ZIONISM IS PASSIONATE, HEATED—AND CRUCIAL. Speaking of Zionism: Education & Advocacy Since Hadassah created Defining Zionism in the 21st Century in 2014, it has fostered an ongoing conversation about Zionism— informative, eye-opening, civil. The monthly discussion program features outstanding guests from Israel and the Diaspora; from the right and left; from journalism, academia, activist organizations and synagogues. Interviews are edited into easy-towatch, easy-to-share short segments, which are widely promoted, including on Hadassah’s website and social media.

Speakers have included journalists from Haaretz, the Jerusalem Post, The Jewish Week (NY), and the Jewish Journal (Los Angeles); Professor Susannah Heschel, Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College; Brooke Goldstein, Founder and Executive Director of the Lawfare Project; Dr. Mehnaz Afridi, Director of Manhattan College’s

Holocaust Center; Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman, President of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem; noted rabbis and spiritual leaders, and more.

In 2016 Hadassah collaborated with The Jewish Week to host panel discussions with live audiences.

The live forums will expand to other parts of the country in 2017-2018.

Spreading the Word • A cohort of Hadassah volunteers are being trained to lead community conversations on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, part of a new Hadassah collaboration with the Shalom Hartman Institute. Marking the first time the Institute is working with leaders who are not rabbis, these Hadassah women will address misconceptions while advancing productive, civil dialogue in communities around the country.

• The How to Talk About Israel guide, created in partnership with the Israel Action Network, helps Israel supporters strengthen their ability to respond to challenging questions about BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions).

• Leadership materials such as Women Who Learn deepen Zionism engagement.

Seeing Is Believing: Hadassah on a Mission Nothing engenders love of Israel more than experiencing the land and people in person. In 2016, 188 women and men went on six Hadassah missions to Israel, walking on its ancient paths, marveling at its history, and seeing firsthand how Hadassah’s world-class hospitals and inspiring youth villages continue to serve all of Israel’s people, every day. In 2016, we inaugurated a new mission to Cuba with two soldout trips and held the first Food, Wine, Fashion & Design Mission to Israel, which was wildly successful.

ZIONISM PROFILE

STEPHANIE Z. BONDER

How and when did you become a Zionist?

My parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were Zionists. When I was in second grade and the Yom Kippur War started, my parents were distraught. Discussions around our dinner table focused on Israel. Then the “Zionism is Racism” resolution came out at the UN in 1975. We went to meetings and I participated in discussions with my parents’ friends. It was terrible. Finally, the cement that glued me to Israel was my parents’ bat mitzvah gift to me, a trip to Israel. As soon as I landed, I knew I was home. I became a Zionist in my own right.

How does being a 5th-generation Hadassah member influence you?

My great-grandmother Rebecca was very involved with Hadassah, founding a chapter in Bridgeport, CT, in the 1920s. Hadassah and Israel inspired her. My daughters have known that Hadassah has driven me since they were born. They learned from a young age that dedicating my free time to Hadassah was helping people around the world. Both girls have visited Hadassah hospitals and seen the power of Hadassah at work. They understand that this is our family legacy.

How do you use your talents as a teacher to further Zionism?

Why are Hadassah’s Defining Zionism conversations important?

Through my role in teaching children at a Solomon Schechter day school, I am also educating the parents about Israel and the importance of advocating for Israel. When we learn about Women’s History Month, I share a piece on Hadassah’s founder, Henrietta Szold. When I teach about immigration, I teach about Henrietta opening the first night school for immigrants in Baltimore.

The school’s mission includes a Zionist ideology, and I immerse my students in a loving, Israel environment.

The term “Zionism” has been hijacked in today’s society. Young Jews on college campuses are bombarded with antiIsrael messages. The time has come for us to retake the word “Zionism” and be proud to be Zionists.

Hadassah’s Defining Zionism program provides our members and the community-at-large with a forum to learn the scope of Zionism today. We have speakers on the left, the right and center. We show the many different faces of Zionism: Jews, Arabs, Muslims, Christians.

Educating our members has always been a high priority of Hadassah.

The 2016 Leaders of Tomorrow Award recipients are Adina Tuchman, 17, of Davie, FL and Mikayla Carno-Harf, 17, of Beachwood, OH. For close to a century, Hadassah has had a strong partnership with Young Judaea, which creates powerful connections to Israel and Zionism for thousands of American youth, fostering pluralism, leadership development, learning, and advocacy.

ADVOCACY AND ACTIVISM ARE IN HADASSAH’S DNA. THE POWER OF WOMEN SPEAKING UP HAS MOVED THE WORLD FORWARD AS WE ADDRESS ISSUES SUCH AS GENDER EQUALITY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS, AND MORE. Creating the Coalition for Women’s Health Equity Hadassah launched the Coalition for Women’s Health Equity in 2016 to address inequities in quality of care, funding and support, and gaps in women’s health awareness. A powerful and unified force to advocate for women’s health equity, the Coalition hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill that brought together Coalition members, congressional staff, and women’s health experts to address risks, research, and key legislative recommendations around women’s health equity.

Gender Equity in Medicine Hadassah promotes gender equity in medicine (GEM)—calling attention to women’s health disparities in medical research, prevention, and access to care. Until recently, the vast majority of medical therapies relied on research findings from overwhelmingly male subjects, including male cells and lab animals. The results of these studies do not adequately address women’s health needs. Gaps in women’s health awareness also lead to misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment and, potentially, death.

Hadassah has worked with members of Congress on legislation to increase the inclusion of females in biomedical research and promote women’s preventive health services.

Hadassah in Action: State and Federal Advocacy Out of all the organizations in the Jewish community, why Hadassah?

I am inspired by Hadassah’s history of advocacy for women’s issues and its commitment to bringing advanced medical care to all, regardless of color, ethnicity or religion.

The image and role of women in the US is changing at an increasingly fast pace, and Hadassah has allowed me to participate in that advancement.

Tell us about your experience with Hadassah’s Day in the District/Date with the State programs.

Before Hadassah, I never participated in politics in any meaningful way. I attended several Days in the District and in May 2016, I had the privilege of standing on the California Senate floor in Sacramento. I realized at that moment how important it is to show up, speak out and be committed. I felt the presence of respect and hope that comes from joining with our government, hand in hand, toward the mutual goal of nurturing a cohesive Jewish community within our state.

I have learned that getting involved in civic responsibilities and advocating on behalf of Jewish values and being in sync with our Senators and Assemblymembers gives me a voice that is actually heard. Hadassah opened my eyes to the disparities in medicine and research regarding women. It made me realize how important it is for groups like Hadassah to work toward change.

What is it that makes you feel a connection to Hadassah women?

The unifying dedication we all have to Israel, to advocacy for women’s issues, and a passionate commitment to social change is remarkable.

Hadassah women have always been a force of change and growth in the Jewish community.

Hadassah thought “global” before it was a catchphrase. “The Power of Women Who Do” connotes the seriousness of how Hadassah members become informed and inspired.

Hadassah Days in the District take place at local congressional offices when legislators are home from Washington. In 2016, Hadassah Connecticut, Hadassah Northern New Jersey, and Hadassah New York received the first-ever Day in the District National Advocacy Awards, for meeting with so many of their federal legislators and engaging Hadassah advocates in the process. Similarly Hadassah advocates head for their state capitals during Date with the State events, focusing on important issues that include pay equity, human trafficking, BDS, and more.

Feeling Empowered: My 1st Day on the Hill “ In Washington, DC, I was a tad nervous to go lobby on the Hill. Nothing could calm my nerves as we approached our first Congressional member’s office, and yet—it was exciting and empowering. We knew our talking points and at the same time we educated them about Hadassah. Not long after our visit, all 100 senators signed a letter demanding an end to UN anti-Israel bias.”

Human Trafficking Human trafficking is a $150 billion industry found in all 50 states. In 2016, Hadassah cosponsored a Jewish Day of Action to #EndHumanTrafficking.

Extensive use of social media spread the message to well over one million Twitter and Facebook followers. More than a dozen additional Jewish organizations joined the effort. Local Hadassah anti-trafficking programs are taking place across the nation, from New Jersey to California, Michigan, Florida, Illinois and beyond.

Attorneys Council Hadassah’s successful Amicus Brief Program, with 40 volunteer attorneys, continued in 2016. Hadassah joined amicus briefs in US Supreme Court and Circuit Court cases dealing with reproductive rights, contraceptive access, the free exercise of religion and separation of church and state.

Once again, members of the Attorneys Council were sworn in before the United States Supreme Court, including Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a Hadassah life member.

Global Women’s Rights Our UN Team presented programs during the Commission on the Status of Women, and represented Hadassah at the UN. Said Nelly Shiloh, Head of the Human Rights Division at the Permanent Mission of Israel to the UN: “Hadassah’s values—which embrace change, personal growth, pluralism, and social responsibility—all resonate with the work we do every day at the Human Rights Division of the Israeli Mission.”

The Hadassah Leadership Fellows take part in a two-year leadership engagement program designed to inspire and cultivate future leaders by offering women opportunities to grow and lead and to perform volunteer work for Hadassah and the larger community. Today’s Leadership Fellows will lead Hadassah and the Jewish community of tomorrow. The 38 dynamic, accomplished women who make up the first two cohorts of leadership fellows are becoming knowledgeable Hadassah ambassadors. The 2016 fellows traveled to Poland and Israel, where they visited Hadassah’s hospitals and participated in governmental sessions and leadership workshops. They returned home with an understanding of Hadassah’s profound connection to Israel. They learned advocacy and fundraising skills and strategies that they will use to effect change and impact their communities. HLF inspires Fellows on their mission to Poland participants to reach their potential as Jewish leaders.

The Power of Our Dreams: Hadassah’s 98th National Convention Nearly 1,000 Hadassah members, speakers, Associates and supporters spent four days in Atlanta at Hadassah’s 98th National Convention, building a stronger network of inspired, powerful Women Who DO. Hadassah President Ellen Hershkin charged attendees to use Hadassah Convention training and tools to engage their own communities in Hadassah initiatives and go “from strength to strength.” Highlights included HMO patients’ stories and programs on cutting-edge research, powerful speakers—including trailblazers like the first woman Knesset speaker and the tech innovator behind the Iron Dome—celebrities, live music, and more.

How has the Hadassah Leadership Fellow program shaped your leadership opportunities in your community?

In 2016, Hadassah Associates celebrated 50 years of supporting Hadassah’s mission to advance medical research, healing, and education.

The Associates promote innovative activities, fundraising opportunities and education in their local areas to reach these mission goals.

In 2016, the Associates raised 29% above their goal for the Hadassah Medical Organization.

I have taken part in an unprecedented journey along with incredible women from around the country.

Connecting Online

Our group nickname—“Lucky 16”—shows just how much we value this experience. From Hadassah House briefings, to Poland, the Kotel and the advocacy day in Washington, DC, I have learned that I have a strong, influential and legendary organization behind me.

Our online community continued to grow, with increased engagement around the US (and the world) on both Facebook and Twitter.

How does Hadassah’s message of “The Power of Women Who Do” resonate in your life today?

In the corporate world, I have met and collaborated with great leaders who have taught me a lot about business. In my Hadassah community in North Carolina, I have witnessed the superpowers of some amazing women. Driven by passion, my Hadassah sisters make the impossible possible.

As a Fellow, what was the most impactful part of your experience in Washington, DC? The Fellow’s advocacy visit to Capitol Hill coincided with the day in which several JCCs around the US received phony terrorist threats.

Our presence in the halls of Congress became all too real and immensely important. Advocating for action against anti-Semitism took center stage.

I will never forget the feeling of empowerment I had to leverage Hadassah’s platform to act for my North Carolina community.

Are you a Zionist? Has Hadassah helped you connect to Israel?

Yes, I am a Zionist. In 2016, I visited the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) where I was astounded when I saw the section dedicated to the contributions of Hadassah. Tears of joy and pride ran down my face the moment I saw the big poster accounting the many clinics, hospitals, schools and Youth Aliyah Villages Hadassah contributed to the State of Israel.

Gifts That Build Our Base A 2015 special promotion allowed Hadassah Life Members to “gift” one-year memberships to friends or family in order to familiarize them to the multifaceted world of Hadassah. Thanks to that introduction, more than 2,300 of these gift recipients elected to become Life Members themselves in 2016. This membership campaign was built on our long-running strategy of encouraging members to give the gift of membership to friends and family.

Streamlining Operations Hadassah’s network of volunteers works with staff in regions throughout the US. In 2016, Hadassah updated its infrastructure by consolidating resources and recalibrating staff and volunteer roles based on expertise and experience, rather than simply geography. The focus this year was on Florida, the Mid-Atlantic and Metro New York.

Janice Weinman was appointed in June 2012 as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of Hadassah. She came directly from her post as President of K.I.D.S., an organization supporting millions of children in need in communities across the United States and overseas. Prior to her position at K.I.D.S., she served as Vice President for External Affairs of The Mount Sinai Hospital/NYU Medical Center and Health System in New York, where she was responsible for government and community relations, marketing, communications and public affairs of the five hospital consortium.

Janice also previously served as Executive Director and CEO of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), a nationwide grassroots network of more than 200,000 members and 800 college and university partners, and was Executive Vice President of the College Board, which works to ensure all students in the United States have adequate preparation and the opportunity to enroll in and graduate from college. She also served as the assistant to US Secretary of Education in both the Carter and Clinton administrations. Among the many leadership positions Janice has held in civic and community organizations, she was an inaugural board member of the Hadassah Foundation, has served as Chair of the Board of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, Chair of the Board of the Women’s Leadership Board of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and member of the Visiting Committee of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She holds doctorate and master’s degrees from Harvard University, and a bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University.

Rick Annis, Chief Financial Officer, is on the Board of Hadassah Medical Organization and has served on nonprofit boards and governmental committees in numerous states and internationally.

Sheryl Zeligson, Hadassah’s General Counsel, has been with Hadassah since 1992. Prior to Hadassah, Zeligson served as an associate at the law firms of Fulbright and Jaworski, LLP and Kelley Drye & Warren, LLP. She graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University with a B.A. in Political Science. Sheryl was awarded a J.D. degree from Fordham University School of Law. She is a member of the New York and New Jersey State Bars, Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the District of New Jersey. She has been a member of the Committee on Non-Profit Organizations, Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

She is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the New York County Lawyers Association, the Association of Corporate Counsel and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. As of the Fall 2017 Semester, Sheryl will be an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University.

Management Team Nantambu Brown is the Director of Operations for the Data Processing Center and Information Technology, and has worked in the nonprofit sector for 20 years. Nantambu received a BA from Lehigh University. Prior to joining Hadassah, he provided technical expertise and performed workshop facilitation for a Harlem-based lifeskills and career training organization.

Naomi Brunnlehrman is the Director of the PRogramming, Advocacy, Zionism and Education (PRAZE) Division. Naomi has been an advocate for over 30 years and is a co-founder of The Jewish Deaf Resource Center, which builds bridges between

individuals who are deaf and hard-of-hearing and the wider Jewish community. She is a trilingual interpreter, a past Assistant Vice President at KeyCorp, a Software Conversion Project Specialist for over 10 years and most recently worked at DOROT as their Education Director.

Naomi has her MA in Jewish Studies from the Graduate School of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and has an advanced certificate in Jewish Philanthropy from Yeshiva University.

Sheryl Hoffman is the Director of Marketing and Communications.

Sheryl has over 35 years experience in marketing agencies, corporate and non-profit

organizations. Prior to joining Hadassah, Sheryl was the Director of External Affairs at Teachers College, Columbia University and the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at Jewish National Fund. Sheryl is a past president of her synagogue, and has also served on various boards and committees including the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) Cantorial School Focus Group and the JTS Cantorial School Task Force. Sheryl graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in Communications.

Melissa Karachalios is the Director of the Member & Unit Services Division. Before coming to Hadassah in October

2013, Melissa served as the Director of Membership and Communications at the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW). There she held responsibility for membership, leadership training, direct marketing activity and media relations. Melissa has over 20 years of nonprofit experience.

Prior to her tenure at the National Council of Jewish Women, Melissa held several management positions in the for-profit sector and in the non-profit sector at the American Society for Microbiology, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society for Neuroscience.

Melissa has a BS in Communications from SUNY Oneonta.

David Pasternack brings 30 years of experience to his role as Chief Development Officer. David received a BA from the University of Georgia. He spent most of his career in various sales and marketing positions including New Business Development at Kimberly-Clark. He later worked at the American Heart Association, where he brought in more donations than anyone in the organization’s history, at the time. Additionally, he helped develop and fund the award-winning GO RED FOR WOMEN campaign. Most recently, David was Executive Director at Israel Bonds NY, where in 2013 alone his team sold over $214 million of investments in the State of Israel.

Hadassah’s founding mission was the establishment of outstanding medical care in Israel, establishing the country’s first School of Nursing in 1918. Tell us about how your mother’s nursing career came about and what obstacles she encountered.

After World War II, my mother’s family didn’t have the means to send her for advanced schooling and financial aid was only available to returning veterans.

She decided that nursing and teaching were her best options and she applied to the Cadet Nursing Corps program created by the US Department of Health, which provided free tuition, books, a uniform, plus a $15 monthly stipend.

Lisa adds, “At age 16 she was accepted by the Waterbury Nursing School at Yale University, which had told her during her interview that they expected her to flunk out because ‘Jewish girls don’t make good nurses.’”

What was her experience at the Waterbury Nursing School at Yale University?

Well, the school insisted on mandatory prayer and chapel attendance, and there was no getting around that requirement! But, my mother loved her classes and the education she received and soon rose to the top of her class.

It was there that she met my father, Joseph Lapan, and they would have three children—my two brothers and me.

Your mother sounds like a remarkable person. Tell us more about her.

She was a force of nature—a self-made woman who was bigger than life— who understood the financial barriers that can prevent students from pursuing educational opportunities. She was a true Renaissance woman. After nursing, she became a licensed pilot, a lawyer and an investor. Yet, she never lost her connection to nursing and to Hadassah.

Tell us about your mother’s bequest to Hadassah.

The Patricia Wahl Lapan Scholarship Program will distribute approximately $20 million over a 25-year period, providing the Henrietta Szold HadassahHebrew University School of Nursing with the unique ability to recruit and retain thousands of qualified students from Israel and from around the world to the nursing profession. Lapan Scholarship students will be granted full tuition to pursue a baccalaureate, master’s, or doctorate degree in nursing. It is a gift of a lifetime, a gift to the students and to the patients they will serve.

What did Hadassah mean to your mother and grandmother?

Hadassah is a true blend of many of her prized values: her love of nursing, her Jewish identity, the State of Israel, and above all education. This fund exemplifies her philanthropic philosophy—helping people to help themselves and then expecting them to give something back to society. That philosophy is central to the gift to the Hadassah nursing school, in particular Ethiopian nurses, who will be giving back to their community through their lifesaving work.

What were her words of advice for young nursing students?

Don’t be afraid. Take advantage of opportunities. Have confidence in yourself.
