Commencement in person ceremonies resume for Class of 2022

NATIONAL HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS WEEK SEPTEMBER 12-18, 2022

Each year, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) calls on Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) to join in observance of National HSIs Week.

This week recognizes the 559 HSIs throughout the nation for their work and critical role in educating and empowering Hispanic youth. This year, HSIs Week will take place Sept. 12-18, 2022, coinciding with Hispanic Heritage Month.

Celebrating HSIs Week

Below are some suggestions of how colleges and universities can celebrate HSIs Week: HSIs Week is observed by colleges and universities across the nation. Social media, virtual events and campus activities are encouraged to heighten awareness of the important role HSIs play in improving access to education and advancing equity for traditionally underserved students. Plans are underway for several members of Congress to recognize the contributions of HSIs in their communities.

1. Raise awareness - Partner with your local newspaper or radio station to advertise National HSIs Week and the events sponsored by your institution. This increased visibility can highlight the contributions made by HSIs on a local, national and international scale. Mention your membership with HACU. 2. Host a campus forum - Organize a town hall meeting with students, faculty, staff and community leaders to explore issues of particular interest to the HSI community.

3. Organize a community-wide activity - Build and promote campus-community partnerships to address various issues impacting the local community.

4. Use social media - Share your HSI stories and/or how your institution plans to celebrate National HSIs Week. Have your president share a video clip on the importance of HSIs. Tag @HACUNews on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Use hashtag #HSIs #HSIsWeek 5. Showcase your students - Arrange for your institution’s choir, band, cheerleading squad to perform during National HSIs Week. You may also highlight the week during a sporting event any day that week.

6. Celebrate National HSIs Week in a way unique to your institution.

A

s the summer months come to an end, we congratulate all colleges and universities and their students who celebrated commencement. A special section in this issue features some of the ceremonies across the nation that returned to a traditional, in-person graduation. HACU also held its first in-person graduation ceremony for fellows of HACU’s Leadership Academy/La Academia de Liderazgo Class of 2021-22, which took place in California. Members of HACU’s Governing Board attended this special event, then held a strategic planning retreat that was also attended by HACU leadership and the Association’s Corporate and Philanthropic Council.

We continue to celebrate the accomplishments at the 30-year milestone of our flagship student program, the HACU National Internship Program (HNIP). A bipartisan Senate Resolution earlier this year recognized the 30th Anniversary of this landmark program for increasing diversity in the Federal government and the private sector. The program’s ongoing legacy includes being cited in the Office of Personnel Management’s Hispanic Nine Point Plan as a resource to increase the recruitment of Hispanic interns in the Federal Government. The program has placed students in nearly 14,000 internship assignments with many of the participants now serving at the U.S. Federal, state or local government level, as well as in private industry. See page 15 for a related article on HNIP. I had the opportunity to testify to the House Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies to press for increased support for Hispanic-Serving Institutions, as well as participate in a panel discussion at the Hispanics in Energy - 2022 Energy Legislative Summit. Both served as platforms for speaking about the urgent need to bolster the capacities of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) to serve all students equitably.

We ask that you join HACU in recognizing the value of HSIs across the nation during National HSIs Week, to be recognized Sept. 12-18, 2022, coinciding with Hispanic Heritage Month. We encourage you to help raise awareness of HSIs and your institution through community activities, campus forums, and by using social media to amplify your events to commemorate the importance of HSIs. We are looking forward to coming back together with everyone this fall at our Annual Conference and pre- and post-conference events in San Diego, California. This Annual Conference will be a return to the in-person, on-site schedule of events of previous years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are so pleased to see that many have already registered and look forward to your participation.

HACU welcomes new members listed on page 13 and features HACU-member institution UTSA on page 14, spotlighting the 2021-2022 student winner of a laptop program that began in partnership between HACU and Gateway but has continued independently for several years now.

HACUNEWS HACU names Oralia De los Reyes as assistant vice president for programs and services The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities appointed Oralia De los Reyes, Ph.D., assistant vice president for programs and services, overseeing the areas of international affairs, learning collaboratives, professional leadership development, STEM programs, and student & PK-12 services.

De los Reyes previously served as dean for Student Success at Alamo Colleges District-San Antonio College Campus. She has 12 years of experience in the manufacturing sector and 20 in higher education research and administration. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the Matamoros Institute of Technology; a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, and a doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin.

HACU names Paul Machen executive director of the Institute for Professional Leadership HACU appointed Paul Machen, Ph.D., executive director of the Institute for Professional Leadership, overseeing HACU’s vision for increasing diversity in leadership roles at colleges and universities and provide strategic direction for the Institute for Professional Leadership. Machen will also provide administrative oversight for the Leadership Academy/La Academia de Liderazgo, as well as events and grants, workshops, webinars, presentations, and information sessions for conferences and events with a leadership-focus.

Machen has 31 years of higher education faculty, curriculum development, and student affairs experience. He served previously at St. Philip’s College for 12 years in various administrator roles: assistant to the president, director of the Quality Enhancement Plan, dean for student success, and interim vice president for student success.

Machen is a decorated retired U.S. Air Force veteran and has served on numerous nonprofit, school board, and city-appointed positions.

He earned a doctorate from Kansas State University, a master’s from City University, and a bachelor’s from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

Bipartisan Senate Resolution recognizes urgent need for Hispanics in STEM support The bipartisan Senate Resolution 640, introduced by U.S. Senators Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and co-sponsored by John Cornyn (R-Texas), passing with unanimous consent, addresses the need for substantial support in educating Hispanic students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields to provide an educated workforce for the technologies of tomorrow.

“HACU is encouraged to see this commitment to improve and support Latinos in STEM careers. The U.S. has an opportunity to build capacity and invest in critical STEM development that will strengthen our economy. Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) have the potential to significantly contribute to STEM teaching, learning, and research, and HSIs are poised to prepare a new contingent of STEM professionals for the nation’s workforce,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores.

HACU receives grant from Southern Company Gas Foundation HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores attended the Hispanics in Energy 2022 Energy Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C., on May 19, 2022, to participate in the session, “Hispanic Energy Jobs: Increasing Innovation and Employment in the Renewable/ Clean Energy Sector.” Panelists discussed STEM education pathways for Hispanics, as well as their representation in the occupational and technical workforce The Southern Company Gas Foundation also presented HACU with a $45,000 grant as special recognition. “HACU thanks the Southern Company Gas Foundation for the recognition of our Associations’ work with a grant award,” said Flores. “This donation will help to further advance HACU’s important work to champion Hispanic success in higher education.”

HACU and Ford Motor Company Fund offers webinar series for students HACU and the Ford Motor Company Fund launched a five-webinar series on topics of interest to college students offered during the summer. The webinars offered as part of the series include: Budgeting for the Modern World; Updating Your Resume; Tips on How to Get a Job During a Pandemic; and Building Credit Post COVID-19.

HACUNEWS HACU receives grant from Capital One for the 202122 Transformative Capacity Building Cohort

HACU announces new members to its Corporate and Philanthropic Council

HACU was awarded a $500,000 community grant from Capital One to support its 2021-22 Transformative Capacity Building Cohort initiatives, including a collaboration with Florida International University and the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, to develop and implement a transformative program to address career pathways and career readiness gaps by developing technology and digital solutions to build university capacity and infrastructure for undergraduate students on the FIU and UPRM campuses.

“We are grateful to Capital One for this grant that will help us expand opportunities to improve career pathways for students, and fellowships for HACU’s Leadership Academy at two of our member institutions: Florida International University and the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “This grant recognizes that support for the needs of our students must be matched by pathways for equitable representation at the highest levels of college and university administration.”

The grant will also support two fellows from UPRM and two from FIU selected to participate in the fourth cohort of HACU’s La Academia de Liderazgo, a one-year program that prepares the next generation of culturally diverse leaders for executive and senior level positions in higher education. Capital One will also provide a workshop for students during the Associations’ Annual Conference, as well as mentorship support to students.

HACU President and CEO gives testimony to House committee HACU was part of a hearing held by the House Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies on May 26, 2022, for the Fiscal Year 2023 LHHS Public Witness Day Hearing. Flores recommended the U.S. Congress and Biden Administration increase the investment in HSIs. As the nation looks to rebuild the economy after the pandemic, it is critical that federal investments strengthen our workforce by enhancing the educational infrastructure of HSIs to pave the path of success and opportunity for Hispanic Americans for the FY 2023.

HACU released its 2021 Annual Report.

In the Annual Report letter, HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores and HACU Governing Board Chair and President of New Jersey City University, Sue Henderson provided an overview of accomplishments by the Association and how it met the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially regarding the effect it had on in-person events as well as celebrating HACU’s 35th Anniversary.

HACU, Miller Lite to award $139,000 in scholarships HACU partnered with Miller Lite to award $139,000 in college scholarships and leadership development opportunities through HACU’s ¡Adelante! Leadership Institute, and is the 18th year the company has partnered with the Association on the scholarship program. A total of 29 scholarships between $2,500 and $5,000 will be awarded to college students enrolled at HACU-member institutions in select cities, in the following states: California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New York, Texas, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico. Recipients also receive sponsorship to attend HACU’s ¡Adelante! Leadership Institute, the student track offered in conjunction with HACU’s Annual Conference.

The scholarships are part of the 2022-23 HACU Scholarship Program.

“While we could not gather to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Association due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we wish to acknowledge all the support of the countless individuals, member institutions, partner organizations and supporters who have made it possible to advance educational success for Hispanic-Serving Institutions and the students they serve. Even under these rapidly changing conditions during the pandemic, which have often required imagination and ingenuity to conduct our work, we held programs and events successfully.”

The Association persistently advocated for more funding for HSIs in partnership with member institutions, and results have been a substantial start in rectifying long-standing inequities. These include funding increases for HSIs, new HSI-related legislation, enhanced Pell Grant awards, student debt reduction, and other higher education initiatives.

HACU statement on a decade of Deferred Action for Child Arrivals HACU issued the following statement on the 10th anniversary of Deferred Action for Child Arrivals (DACA): “On the 10th anniversary of Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, there are more than 400,000 undocumented students enrolled in higher education, with approximately half with DACA. They are an essential element to the economy and social fabric of American society who are making significant contributions in and out of the classroom. Yet they are denied the fundamental promise of an affordable education and lack a pathway to citizenship. It is urgent that this federal policy directive expand its scope and provide all the rights, privileges and responsibilities afforded to a permanent resident or U.S. citizen,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores.

HACUNEWS HACU’s Leadership Academy/La Academia de Liderazgo Class of 2021-22 graduate HACU held the final seminar and graduation ceremony for its Leadership Academy/La Academia de Liderazgo 2021-22 Class of Fellows on June 21-23, 2022, at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort in California.

The three-day seminar focused on topics related to international collaborations. Fellows participated in a welcome reception, round table discussions and a networking dinner with HACU’s Governing Board. The seminar concluded with a graduation ceremony.

HACU holds Governing Board strategic planning retreat HACU held its first in-person retreat since the pandemic with its Governing Board and Corporate and Philanthropic Council on June 23-25, 2022, in Coronado, California.

The purpose of the retreat was to set the stage for new initiatives of the 2023-27 HACU Strategic Plan. Some of the discussions focused on higher education trends and opportunities for the Association.

Briefings were held during the retreat to discuss advocacy, collaborations with federal agencies and workforce development in the corporate sector.

Frank G. Scarpaci served as the facilitator and led the collaborative activities to help the Board, C&P Council and HACU staff plan for the Association’s initiatives over the next five years.

“We greatly appreciate the leadership support of our Governing Board and Corporate and Philanthropic Council and are thankful for their commitment to our mission of championing Hispanic success in higher education,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “The retreat was a great success, and the discussions were inspiring and helpful in building the strategic plan for the future of HACU.”

HACU International Plenary to focus on innovating and retooling post-pandemic

HACU will host a Town Hall to discuss, "The Synergies of HSIs and Latino/as in Clean Energies: Making America the Powerhouse of the World’s Economic Prosperity," on Oct. 10, 3:30-5 p.m. PDT, as part of its 36th Annual Conference taking place at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego in Calif.

HACU will present an International Plenary on, "Resilience, Recovery, and Retooling in Post-Pandemic Higher Education: Lessons learned and applied in diverse international settings," Oct. 10, 2022, 9:00 – 10:15 a.m., as part of its 36th Annual Conference taking place at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, Calif.

The Town Hall will focus on the leadership role of Hispanic-Serving Institutions in climate mitigation. Lessening the effects of climate change and affording environmental justice has become even more pressing as the world continues to recover from the pandemic. HSIs and their students are an asset to strengthen the country’s global role in STEM careers, particularly in clean energies and environmental justice that will need technicians, engineers, and scientists. Equitable federal and private investments are demanded to achieve this common aim.

The plenary will feature a panel discussion on the impact of the pandemic and the recovery from it by innovating and retooling for this new normal. Panelists will highlight the depth of change of the past two years, which is unparalleled in recent history, and the major differences in technical and economic resources across nations and among institutions. Panelists from Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica, and the United States, including public and private universities, will discuss the lessons learned and applied.

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2022 A snapshot of graduation ceremonies at HACU-member institutions across the nation.

Arizona Central Arizona College recognizes May 2022 graduates Central Arizona College recognized this year’s college students during two commencement ceremonies, honoring 602 graduates earning a total of 695 degrees and certificates, as well as graduates of the 64th Nursing Division for completing the college’s nursing program. The oldest person to be awarded a degree or certificate this year was 76 and the youngest was 17. Seven students graduated from both Central Arizona College and from high school as members of the Class of 2022.

California Allan Hancock College holds 101st commencement ceremony Allan Hancock College recognized nearly 500 graduates in a return to a traditional graduation ceremony. In 2022, 1,490 students earned 2,213 associate degrees and 959 certificates of achievement across 101 different majors. Notable graduates were Peggy Joyce Johnson, who graduated with a degree in arts and humanities at the age of 87, and Jayden Yamamoto, who earned a total of 12 degrees.

California Lutheran University holds in-person commencement California Lutheran University held 2022 commencement ceremonies for students in the bachelor’s degree for professionals program, master’s degrees, doctorates, and traditional bachelor’s degrees. Speakers included Antonio Ayala, 20-year veteran serving as a construction mechanic with the Port Hueneme-based Seabees, who received a bachelors, and Erica Rivera on behalf of those earning graduate degrees.

Thousands of Cal State LA students to graduate during commencement 2022 Cal State LA Commencement featured 10 separate college-based ceremonies in Commencement Pavilion, with an estimated 25,000 guests attending. Honorary doctorates were awarded to Sal Castro, longtime educator, social justice advocate and Cal State LA alumnus, honored posthumously; Cal State LA alumnus Richard D. Cordova, president of The Cordova Group and former president and chief executive officer of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles; David Henry Hwang, playwright, screenwriter and professor; and Jaime Jarrín, Los Angeles Dodgers Spanish-language announcer.

CSUN celebrates previous and present grads at commencement

Following two years of virtual and hybrid ceremonies due to the COVID-19 pandemic, commencement celebrations returned to in-person at California State University, Northridge. Over 11,000 students from the class of 2022 participated, along with graduates of fall 2019, spring 2020, summer 2020, fall 2020, spring 2021 and summer 2021. Honorary doctorates were awarded to civic and business leader Paul Jennings, and CSUN alumna Irene Tovar, founder and former executive officer of the Latin American Civic Association.

Mount Saint Mary’s University celebrates class of 2022 Mount Saint Mary’s University, Los Angeles, held three ceremonies for the class of 2022 as well as a special celebration for the Class of 2020, with more than 150 returning for the opportunity to walk across the stage. Guests were able to sit outside of the graduate seating section and view the ceremonies on four large screens.

Monterey Peninsula College honors graduates from 2020, 2021 and 2022 Monterey Peninsula College held its first inperson commencement ceremony since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic on May 27. MPC conferred 1,059 degrees and certificates to 866 students graduating this spring, including nine dual enrollment students from four area high schools, as well as more than 1,650 students who earned degrees in 2020 and 2021, but were unable to participate in an in-person ceremony.

San Francisco State University hosts two commencement ceremonies

Illinois SIU Carbondale commencement recognizes more than 1,800 students Southern Illinois University Carbondale held commencement ceremonies for 1,834 candidates for degrees, including 1,208 candidates for bachelor’s degrees, 392 candidates for master’s degrees, 113 candidates for doctoral degrees, 72 law degree candidates and 49 candidates for associate degrees.

San Francisco State University held two commencement ceremonies this year, the university’s first in-person commencement in more than two years and honored graduates from the classes of 2020 and 2021. Speakers included City and County of San Francisco’s Board Supervisor for District 7 Myrna Melgar, and California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis. Honorary doctorates were awarded to social justice activist Fania E. Davis and actor BD Wong.

The University of La Verne’s holds commencement for more than 2,300 graduates The University of La Verne held commencement for graduates from the university’s four colleges on the central campus in La Verne, eight regional campuses, as well as online students. Keynote speakers included co-founder and CEO of Excelencia in Education Deborah A. Santiago; Pomona Unified School District Superintendent Richard Martinez; attorney Ricardo Echeverria; and Executive Vice President of the Lewis Group of Companies Randall Lewis.

MEMBERNEWS Indiana Indiana University South Bend awards nearly 1,000 degrees Indiana University President Pamela Whitten presided over the Indiana University South Bend’s commencement ceremony, with IU South Bend Chancellor Susan Elrod addressing the graduates. An honorary doctorate was awarded to Indiana lawmaker B. Patrick Bauer, the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives at the time of his retirement. The 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Charlotte D. Pfeifer-Gillam, founder of IU South Bend’s Office of Campus Diversity and was the campus director of student and community relations.

Purdue University Northwest hosts outdoor ceremony for nearly 1,000 graduates Purdue University Northwest’s spring 2022 graduating class consisted of 976 candidates, including 856 earning baccalaureate degrees and 120 earning master’s degrees. Keynote speaker Alfredo Sori, who graduated from PNW in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in construction management, was a longtime leader and manager of large-scale construction operations and industrial engineering projects with Kiewit, Inc.

New Jersey Bergen Community College returns to in-person commencement Bergen Community College returned to a live and in-person commencement ceremony that featured motivational speaker Gian Paul Gonzalez, Bergen County Executive James Tedesco III and Bergen County Commissioner Chair Tracy Zur providing remarks to graduates. The class of 2022 featured dozens of Bergen County high school students earning degrees as part of the college’s early college program, members of the Turning Point Program for students with intellectual disabilities, and 86 students with 4.0 GPAs.

Hudson County Community College honors graduating classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022

Hudson County Community College held their first on-ground commencement ceremony since the beginning of the pandemic recognizing nearly 2,300 graduates. HCCC 2021 Valedictorian Pedro Moranchel, now a Princeton student who received the esteemed 2021 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, delivered the keynote address. Also recognized were 38 Hudson County high school students who completed the HCCC associate degree this year while enrolled in high school.

MEMBERNEWS New Jersey City University holds commencement for over 1,800 graduates

New Jersey City University awarded 1,876 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in a double ceremony during its 2022 commencement exercises on June 2 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Honorary doctorates were awarded to U.S. Senator and Hudson County native Bob Menendez, and New Jersey State Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa.

New York Queens College holds 98th Commencement with in-person ceremony

New Mexico Northern New Mexico College celebrates 2020, 2021 and 2022 candidates

Northern New Mexico College held two ceremonies to celebrate 2020, 2021 and 2022 candidates. The commencement speaker was NNMC alumni Jacob Torres, a NASA Engineer at the Kennedy Space Center and best known for his work with the NASA Space Crop Production team growing chiles in space. Eighty-four-year-old Socorro Herrera was presented with an honorary degree for service to the community.

Pennsylvania Cedar Crest College holds its 152nd commencement Cedar Crest College awarded 209 bachelor’s, 76 master’s and nine doctoral degrees during its 2022 commencement. A keynote address was delivered by Second Lieutenant Reilly Rudolph, an engineer officer in the U.S. Army and the sixth woman in history to hold the position of Brigade Commander of the Corps of Cadets. A hooding ceremony for graduate students and the Cedar Crest College’s baccalaureate and academic award ceremonies were held separately.

Queens College President Frank H. Wu presided over the college’s first in-person commencement ceremony since 2019 recognizing over 2,100 degree candidates from summer and fall 2020, and winter and spring 2021. It was his first inperson ceremony and second overall since being named president in July 2020. Honorary doctorates were awarded to Danny Burstein, Tony-winning star of theatre, film, and television, and Arturo Casadevall, a world-class researcher who has published more than 746 papers and 33 book chapters in immunology, microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and medicine. Speakers included U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer and New York City Mayor Eric L. Adams.

Texas EPCC awards over 2,000 degrees and certificates during 2022 commencement El Paso Community College held its commencement at the University of Texas at El Paso Don Haskins Center, awarding 2,081 associate degrees and certificates during two ceremonies. The EPCC commencement speaker was Roberto Coronado, currently serving as senior vice president in charge and senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, El Paso Branch.

MEMBERNEWS Lone Star College awards record number of degrees and certificates Lone Star College awarded 9,476 degrees and certificates to students during its spring 2022 commencement celebrations, representing a 2% increase from 2021. This year is also the first time LSC awarded bachelor of applied technology in cybersecurity and bachelor of applied science in energy, manufacturing & trades management degrees.

Utah Weber State University Holds LatinX Graduation Ceremony Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, held its 4th annual LatinX Graduation Ceremony. The event celebrated 75 LatinX students graduating this spring with their associate’s or bachelor’s degrees.

Alejandro Valquinto, a graduate of Weber State, was the keynote speaker for the bilingual event, which was held the Saturday prior to the university’s general commencement ceremony. Weber State President Brad Mortensen and other members of his administration attended the ceremony, with President Mortensen offering closing remarks.

In mentoring sessions, ACE students learn best practices to study effectively, time management, resilience, and much more. We are proud of our work and most importantly proud of our ACE scholars,” he added.

The winner of the Office of Information Technology Laptop Award for the 2021-2022 academic year, awarded

by Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities and University of Texas at San Antonio, is Brianna Garcia a mentor and graduate of the Access College and Excel Scholars program.

The laptop award program originated as a partnership between HACU and Gateway, with UTSA choosing to continue the laptop awards after the Gateway partnership ended. At UTSA, a committee of ACE Scholars advisers selects the laptop award recipients.

A search of spring 2022 candidates who were admitted to the program and participate as mentors for their underclassmen established a pool of potential awardees. The candidates were asked to submit an essay application detailing their academic and community engagement experience and showcasing their UTSA involvement. Although a candidate’s grade point average is a factor in selecting the award recipients, it is not the sole factor. The committee considers overall accomplishments and the time spent on community and 14

campus involvement, as well as the student’s desire for success, which was the Access College and Excel Scholars program's initial mission.

The year 1992 brought a major change to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities that still benefits Hispanic-Serving Institutions and the students they serve to this day – the launch of the HACU National Internship Program, that to date, has made 13,830 internship placements and served as a pipeline for Hispanics to careers in the federal government and private sector.

The program has provided much needed experience for college students as they travel their higher education path and has resulted in a significant number of permanent hires among the interns into the agencies and corporations they served. The success of the program earned it recognition in the Hispanic Nine Point Plan by the Office of Personnel Management as a resource to increase the recruitment of Hispanic interns in the Federal Government.

Even during the worst of the pandemic, HNIP managed to keep placing students in roles that were primarily virtual but still provided hands on experience working in potential career fields. The resilience of the interns in adjusting to new ways of working was matched by the efforts of federal and corporate partners in finding ways to accommodate them.

“HACU has always been a stalwart proponent of partnerships between academic institutions and public/private sector entities, and the HACU National Internship Program may be one of the best examples of how these partnerships can serve not just individual students but the communities in which they live and work,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “It is gratifying to know that a great number of working professionals got their start with the internship program, and we hope to continue guiding young people into these positions for many more years to come.

This year, the U.S. Senate recognized the contributions made by HACU’s National Internship Program with a bipartisan Senate Resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), co-founders and co-chairs of the Hispanic-Serving Institutions Senate Caucus, alongside Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), on the 30th Anniversary of the HACU National Internship Program. The Senate Resolution celebrates the HNIP legacy of increasing diversity in the federal government and the private sector for over three decades, a notable recognition that is unmatched in serving the students of Hispanic-Serving Institutions across the country.

HACU’S ANNUAL CONFERENCE RETURNS TO SAN DIEGO

In 2017, HACU held its 31st Annual Conference in San Diego, California, a state that is home to the largest number of Hispanic-Serving Institutions serving the fastest growing college-bound demographic. In 2022, the Association returns to San Diego, the first live and in-person conference in two years, with procedures in place to ensure the event is successful in keeping attendees healthy and safe.

The return of the conference to a live format in San Diego means that the nearly always pleasant weather, thriving downtown area and the amenities offered by the Manchester Grand Hyatt will make the event a memorable experience for attendees. As the oldest city in the state of California, the history of the region can be found throughout the metropolitan area and beyond, providing an exploration of not just American history but a view of Hispanic American history and the story of the indigenous peoples that were here first as well.

The original inhabitants of the San Diego area are now known as the San Dieguito people, who were assimilated by the La Jollan people. Other groups of the area include the Yuman-speaking peoples such as the Diegueños and the Kamia and Yuma tribes to the east, followed by the Luiseño, Cahuilla, Cupeño, Ipai or Northern Diegueño, and the Ipai or Kumeyaay.

In 1513, the first European to arrive on the West Coast, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, began the long association

San Diego and much of California has with Hispanic culture and its people, and the city has many locations recognized for their historical significance. After Mexico won independence from Spain, the city thrived under Mexican rule for 25 years until 1848, after the war between Mexico and the U.S. brings the region under American control.

San Diego today offers an exciting nightlife in the downtown area and surrounding sections where HACU’s conference takes place, such as the Gaslamp Quarter featuring Victorian Age buildings sitting among modern structures, the waterfront Embarcadero along the San Diego Bay, the Little Italy district, the revitalized East Village warehouse district, and Barrio Logan. Other San Diego attractions accessible from the conference location include Balboa Park, the Japanese Friendship Garden, the USS Midway Museum, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. HACU looks forward to meeting with our partners and supporters in person once again in one of America’s most beautiful and welcoming cities.
