THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE THEATRE For 125 years, Hackney Empire has been a place where unforgettable stories are shared, extraordinary artists take to the stage and communities come together to celebrate and connect, often in joy; often inspiring progress and change. At the heart of our story is a commitment to making Hackney Empire a welcoming and accessible place: where creatives as diverse as the people who live here, marginalised and independent voices, all have a platform, and everyone can feel they belong. In this special anniversary year, we celebrate our past, present and look ahead to an exciting future: the artists, collaborators, creatives, audiences and communities who have shaped our story.

One thing has remained constant throughout our history, as true today as it has ever been: the people are what make Hackney Empire what it is. The passion, talent and dedication of our staff, Trustees, participants and audiences have made the last 125 years possible, and they will continue to inspire the next chapter of Hackney Empire’s story.

WELCOME It’s an honour to welcome you to this new season at Hackney Empire, and to have been trusted to lead the team at this wonderful theatre, as we begin a very special year in our history. For 125 years, Hackney Empire has been a home for the people of Hackney, London and beyond to share iconic experiences together in “London’s most beautiful theatre”, as Time Out named us in 2025. Throughout its history, this unique and special venue has been a vital platform for underrepresented artists and a champion of Black, Asian and global majority creatives and communities. You will see from the shows featured in this brochure – the programme for the first half of our anniversary year – that we are proud to continue this legacy; and ambitious to take things further. During the next nine months, you will find our usual exciting mix of theatre, comedy, music and dance; and, of course, our celebrated pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk directed by and starring Olivier Award-winner Clive Rowe. However, you will also see a number of new home-produced shows and collaborations, with more to come in the second half of 2027. We are excited to premiere our new variety series, Empire Nights, with the first event in October curated by Jamali Maddix featuring Michelle de Swarte, Guz Khan and Kurupt FM. In July 2027, our co-production of Nanny of the Maroons tells the epic true story of a Jamaican national hero. A season of high quality theatre and dance includes multi-award winning The Nature of Forgetting, four new productions from English Touring Opera, The World As We See It from one of the UK’s leading

Black dance companies, contemporary Kathak piece Bibi Rukiya’s Reckless Daughter, the return of Ballet Black, Yasuke a new opera from Hackney Empire artist development graduate Renell Shaw, and Talawa Iconic showcase celebrating 40 years of the leading Black British theatre company featuring David Harewood OBE, Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE and more. We welcome back Lenny Henry, Jo Brand and Oliver Samuels, key figures from our history who continue to enjoy a special relationship with our magical venue, as well as music legends David Byrne and Dexys Midnight Runners. City of London Sinfonia premiere REST, and 2025 double-sellout show The Witch of Konotop returns, alongside a second Ukrainian production The Wardrobe. Hackney Empire is recognised nationally for its transformational work with young people and young artists, and our Creative Futures programme celebrates its own 25th anniversary in 2027. Supporting the ambitions of young people and nurturing their skills and interests through to careers in the arts continue to be central to our work. Whether you are discovering Hackney Empire for the first time, returning to a theatre you know and love, or have been part of our story for generations, I hope you will find something here that excites you. CREATIVE FUTURES For 25 years, Creative Futures has been Hackney Empire’s pioneering programme for young people, creating opportunities and pathways to perform, make work, develop skills onstage and offstage, building community and careers. Free and open to young people aged 14 - 25, Creative Futures spans music, dance, acting, writing, producing and behind the scenes roles. From performance opportunities to workshops, intensives, longer-term projects and training programmes, there are regular ways to take part, meet other young creatives and develop your practice. Visit our website to see what’s coming up and join the Creative Futures mailing list for new opportunities.

THINGS YOU CAN SIGN UP FOR NOW Young Producers: for ages 14 - 19 A weekly training programme running from September to July. Young Producers learn about the role of a producer and develop the skills and confidence to create, organise and manage their own events throughout the year.

Community Choir: for ages 18+

Captured, The People’s Archives : for ages 18 - 25 Explore Hackney Empire’s history, performers and communities while developing research skills. The programme includes specialist workshops in research, journalism, media, creative direction and marketing.

Schools & Colleges Hackney Empire works directly with schools and colleges across Hackney, creating in and with our community. We offer free music, dance and drama workshops and projects for every secondary school and college in Hackney, alongside curriculum support and work responding to young people’s wider needs.

Mental Health Champions: for ages 16 - 21 Help shape a kinder, more supportive Creative Futures community. Young people aged 16 - 21 can develop mental health knowledge, listening and facilitation skills, co-design wellbeing projects and lead creative wellbeing activities.

A weekly space for anyone who enjoys singing and making music together. The choir explores an eclectic mix of music that reflects the cultural diversity of its members, with opportunities to learn, meet others and perform together.

EXHIBITION, HACKNEY EMPIRE FOYER Presented in our foyer space, Hackney Empire: 125 Iconic Years brings together the remarkable history of Hackney Empire, “London’s Most Beautiful Theatre” (Time Out), and celebrates the many chapters that have shaped its story.

The story continues through New Variety, comedy and music, The 291 Club and the birth of Creative Futures, celebrating the artists, audiences and communities who have made Hackney Empire a home for creativity, equity and diversity.

From its opening in 1901, Hackney Empire has been at the heart of London’s cultural life. This exhibition traces its remarkable journey across 125 iconic years, from the golden age of Music Hall and Variety, through Jazz, Rock ’n’ Roll, Hollywood and television, to its time as a Mecca Bingo Hall and the campaign to reclaim the building as a theatre.

Now, in 2026, we are continuing the theatre’s tradition of bringing together major names from music, theatre, comedy, opera, dance as well as a focus on partnerships and productions, world premieres, landmark anniversaries, and our nationally recognised work with young people.

EMPIRE NIGHTS WITH JAMALI MADDIX Hackney Empire launches Empire Nights, an unmissable new live series bringing together some of the most exciting names in comedy, music and culture, curated by a special guest host.

UK Garage legends Kurupt FM headline, with Seapa, MC Beats and Steve bringing a finale of UK Garage, Drum & Bass and Grime. Expect big tunes, big personalities and a proper Kurupt FM takeover.

The first edition of Empire Nights is hosted by Jamali Maddix (Never Mind the Buzzcocks), who has handpicked a stacked line-up featuring Guz Khan (Man Like Mobeen, Taskmaster), Michelle de Swarte (Spent), Kyrah Gray (Mo Gilligan’s Black British Takeover), Manga Saint Hilare (BBC 1Xtra), DJ Lex Blondin (Church of Sounds, Total Refreshment Centre).

Empire Nights celebrates the artists shaping contemporary British culture, with this first edition blending stand-up, grime and underground culture.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK Climb into a world of magic and mischief this festive season, as “panto royalty” (The Times) Clive Rowe returns to the Hackney Empire stage as Dame Trot, in Jack and the Beanstalk. The show also stars Kat B as Simple Simon. Join happy-go-lucky Jack on an epic adventure after he sells his family’s beloved cow for a handful of magic beans, setting off a chain of events that leads high into the clouds. As Jack climbs up the beanstalk, he discovers an enchanted land, a powerful giant and a host of surprises, but can he outsmart the giant and save the day? Directed by and starring Olivier Award-winner Clive Rowe, this joyful tale brings together all the best bits of a Hackney Empire pantomime: giant laughs, toe-tapping songs, dazzling dance numbers, extravagant costumes and plenty of chances for everyone to join in the fun. NANNY OF THE MAROONS Nanny of the Maroons is the epic true story of a Woman, a Warrior, a Queen, who led the fight for freedom and became a Jamaican national hero. High in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, Queen Nanny prepares to lead her people in a war against British colonial forces. A brilliant military strategist and revered spiritual leader, she has outwitted her enemies at every turn with such cunning, they claim she has the powers of a witch. As long as her people remain enslaved, her war rages on. The legacy of Queen Nanny will be brought to life in Nanny of the Maroons, a landmark production co‑directed by Corey Campbell, and Justine Themen.

Developed over two years through historical research, community storytelling sessions, and artistic collaborations, Nanny of the Maroons will be a celebration of history, heritage, the power of community and the true meaning of freedom. THE NATURE OF FORGETTING Since its 2017 premiere, The Nature of Forgetting has moved audiences from New York to Seoul, São Paulo to Shanghai, and played to sold-out houses across the US, China and beyond; establishing itself as one of the most powerful theatrical experiences of the past decade. Following more than 200 performances worldwide, Theatre Re brings its explosive, powerful and joyous piece about what is left when memory is gone back to London for its landmark 10th Anniversary Season. TALAWA ICONIC: 40TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWCASE We’re painting the town Black for one night only: celebrating four decades of Talawa, the UK’s leading Black British theatre company, with performances from stage and screen royalty that have been part of the company’s story. THE WORLD AS WE SEE IT Human life is fleeting, the world is still unfolding… Redefining dance from the African Diaspora, ACE Dance and Music’s new double bill, The World As We See It, presents two powerful contrasting visions of our world, from two of the most exciting contemporary African choreographers. ‘ECHOES OF DUST’ – choreographed by Serge Aimé Coulibaly, with creative contributions from Sigué Sayouba. When the world trembles, what remains of our humanity? When all seems lost, what hope can we still hold on to? In a world torn apart by war, disaster and the invisible collapse of human connection; seven individuals find themselves stranded in the heart of chaos. Confronting the remnants of a shattered world, stripped of certainty and memory they stumble, fight, and protest; with each encounter, a voice is reclaimed.

‘LETLALO’, meaning “Skin” in Mantsoe’s native tongue ‘Sotho’ is choreographed by Vincent Mantsoe and draws from African, Indigenous and contemporary dance languages to explore the deep connection between humanity and the earth. Rooted in ancestral wisdom and inspired by nomadic cultures, the performance reflects on the quiet strength of communities living in harmony. PUNK DAYS Summer 1977. I was 16. The Labour government was on the rocks. The Nazi National Front was on the rise. Life in London was like an old black and white film–stuttering. Washed out. Bleak. Then Punk Rock exploded on the scene. Everything changed. My life changed. Forever.

Part documentary, part musical journey and part coming of age tale, Punk Days is the story of a mixed race, working-class kid growing up in 1970’s London, plagued by racism, poverty and social conformity who finds hope, freedom and identity in the noise and rebellion of Punk Rock and the fight against fascism.

BIBI RUKIYA’S RECKLESS DAUGHTER Set in contemporary inner-city marginalised migrant communities, and loosely based on Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba, the story follows Bibi Rukiya, a widow who confines her three daughters in response to societal pressure to protect her family’s reputation and secure their marriages. Her daughters react in different ways - one of them, driven by her own aspirations, challenges her mother’s motives and role as a woman.

A new dance-theatre production from choreographer Amina Khayyam explores conditioned patriarchy enforced by women. She bemoans her mother for trapping her in cultural constraints dictated by men... why is she exercising their will? Presented by Amina Khayyam Dance Company.

BALLET BLACK: UNBOUND Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black returns with a thrilling triple bill featuring the revival of Mthuthuzeli November’s acclaimed Nina: By Whatever Means, celebrating the extraordinary life, music and spirit of Nina Simone. Isabela Coracy returns to her Olivier Award-winning role as Nina, a performance that also earned her a Black British Theatre Award, alongside the Ballet’s own award for the production.

YASUKE A story of migration and identity, integration, and personal strength. Yasuke tells the human story of an African boy taken from his homeland who finds himself as a trusted warrior in the court of Oda Nobunaga, the great unifier of 16th Century Japan at the height of the age of the Samurai. Yasuke’s ultimate quest, however, is to discover who he truly is for himself. An African man in feudal Japan becomes a modernday myth, confronting a world that still struggles to understand Black presence, power, complexity and belonging outside Western narratives.

Yasuke is opera re-imagined, written and composed by Ivor Novello Award-winning music creator and Hackney Empire Creative Futures alumni Renell Shaw. WORKSHOPS FOR CREATIVES THEATRE RE: WEEK-LONG INTENSIVE “One of the UK’s most admired physical theatre companies.” The Scotsman As Theatre Re celebrates 15 years of making original visual theatre, Hackney-based Artistic Director Guillaume Pige invites performers, recent graduates and actors in training to join a week‑long immersion into the physical training and creative practice at the heart of Theatre Re’s internationally acclaimed work. The intensive approach offers an opportunity to connect with a community of performers and collaborators interested in ambitious, visually and physically driven work. It is one of the best ways for you to get to know Theatre Re, and the company to get to know you. Many of our company artists first encountered us through training: an important part of how our creative community continues to grow.

PRODUCER BOOTCAMP Producer Bootcamp is a deep dive into the role of a producer, and what skills & knowledge you will need to produce your own work and the work of others. Throughout this week you will be led through Producing for Theatre 101. Each day we cover new topics, dive deep into the hows, whats, and whys of freelance producing. If you’re an artist or early career producer who wants to gain formal knowledge of working in the arts, this is the course for you.

NOOR-E-DASTAAN BY BHUWIN Bhuwin crafts soulful folk-infused melodies and therapeutic poetry that turn life, love, and longing into a healing journey for the restless heart. His music showcases a deep impression of folk which he imbibed from the years spent in Rajasthan and Punjab while growing up.

WHAT DID YOU DO YESTERDAY? WITH MAX RUSHDEN AND DAVID O’DOHERTY The chart-topping, hit comedy podcast. Hosts Max and David are joined by a comedian guest to discuss their yesterday in hilariously forensic detail.

King Minos’ daughter writes to the lover who has abandoned her in a poignant one-act drama which explores how absence is defined by love. A powerful and intimate retelling of the myth of Ariadne. Queen Dido of Carthage prepares to wed the Trojan hero, Aeneas. But the rejected King Iarbas plans his revenge, threatening to drive the lovers apart. Based on Virgil’s epic poem The Aeneid, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas recalls the tragedy of the Queen of Carthage in a masterpiece of Baroque music, theatricality and despair.
