Woodland Library

Woodland embraced the opportunity to create a new community library that reflects the goals of a growing, tightknit population. Replacing an outdated facility, the new library is a flexible, future-ready place for exploration and connection.

Though located near Interstate 5, the design creates a calm, protected environment rooted in nature. A central courtyard brings daylight and landscape into the heart of the building, strengthening the connection between the community and its surroundings.

The design is inspired by an ecotone, the transition between forest and field. Light-filled reading spaces form an open “meadow” at the center, while meeting rooms, teen space, and support areas create a protective “forest edge” around it. This layered organization supports both quiet reflection and active gathering.

Adaptable multi-use spaces and a two-wing layout allow the library to evolve over time, while outdoor gathering areas, a learning garden, and connections to the adjacent park and lake extend the library beyond its footprint. Together, these elements create an inclusive, resilient community hub that blends learning, nature, and belonging.

Woodland Library

This new state-of-the-art library celebrates the one element that unites the community: the majestic landscape of Utah’s Cache Valley.

Replacing an outdated building on the same site, it is repositioned to engage more of Main Street— helping catalyze downtown Logan’s development— while also expanding a public plaza shared with adjacent civic buildings. With patrons arriving from opposite directions, the plan strategically narrows to guide everyone toward the help desk between the two entrances, ensuring immediate access to assistance upon arrival.

The three-story building is organized around views to the surrounding landscape, with the most energetic activities on the first floor (the City), less active areas on the second floor (the Neighborhood), and quiet, contemplative spaces on the third floor (the Mountains). Windows on each level are proportioned to frame the corresponding landscape elements, reinforcing the building’s relationship to place. Double-height spaces connect these distinct experiences, inviting exploration and creating a sense of continuity throughout.

As a place of discovery, the library offers unparalleled views of the Cache Valley, inspiring patrons to see familiar landmarks in new ways. By bringing the landscape into the building, it creates an immediate and lasting connection to place, grounding learning and community in the world around it.

Logan Library

Ledding Library City of Milwaukie

Milwaukie combines small-town charm with direct access to the Portland metropolitan area, rooted in a strong connection to its natural surroundings.

The new Ledding Library is located at the edge of downtown between a sensitive natural area, a city park, and City Hall, positioning it as a prominent civic anchor.

Inspired by the movement of nearby rivers, the building bends across the site to capture views of the surrounding forest and wetlands. Extensive use of wood inside and out helps the library blend with the park, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Designed as a model of sustainability, the building is projected to reduce energy use by more than 70% compared to the national library average (CBECS), meeting the 2030 Challenge. A roofmounted photovoltaic array further reduces energy demand, supporting the long-term goal of net-zero energy performance.

Salem Public Library City of Salem

As a design-build project, this renovation was successful due to a close partnership among the client, contractor, and architect, resulting in a space that strengthens connections between people and their community. The design introduces daylight into the core of the formerly fortress-like building, transforming an inward-facing, brutalistera structure into a bright, voluminous space that invites the public inside. New windows and redesigned entrances enhance the relationship between interior and exterior, while a central, multi-story space creates clear visual and physical connections between floors.

Working within the constraints of a highly utilitarian budget, the design team approached each decision with an emphasis on maximizing value. Every design choice serves multiple purposes, contributing to improved seismic performance and life safety while advancing a community-centered vision focused on the experience of patrons and staff.

The project reimagines how spaces with differing functions relate to one another, balancing public and staff needs, accommodating multiple age groups, and organizing quiet, active, and hightraffic areas. Staff and back-of-house functions are consolidated on the lower level to improve efficiency, while active public spaces are primarily located on the upper two floors.

This apartment complex reflects the character and history of the surrounding neighborhood, drawing from the area’s industrial roots. This building is welcoming and easy to navigate, creating a strong sense of arrival at the neighborhood’s edge. Two residential towers rise from a shared base and are positioned to maximize natural light and views while reinforcing active, walkable streets. The gently curved form breaks the scale of the building into smaller, more approachable pieces, helping homes feel bright, open, and connected to the surrounding city.

At street level, the building is lively and inviting.

Walk-up apartments offer a more private, townhome-style living experience, while tall ceilings and clearly visible entrances create an open, comfortable atmosphere. Shared amenities, including a resident work lounge and pop-up retailm are located at prominent corners, adding daily convenience, supporting local businesses, and bringing energy to the neighborhood throughout the day. Durable, low-maintenance materials were selected to reflect the area’s working-class history while ensuring long-term performance. Overall, the project aims to feel rooted, welcoming, and well connected to its community.

Located in Portland’s Brooklyn neighborhood, Brookland Apartments reconnects residents to nature and the Willamette River through a network of open-air courtyards that feel like shared front yards rather than interior corridors. Filled with plants, natural light, and fresh air, these woodclad spaces bring greenery into every home and extend outward as terraces on each floor, offering welcoming places to pause, gather, and interact with neighbors.

Shared amenities—including a ground-floor lounge, coworking space, fitness center, sauna, and rooftop commons—support daily life and foster a strong sense of community. Interiors are intentionally calm and bright, providing a serene contrast to the warmth of western red cedar, vine-covered trellises, and lush planting throughout the courtyards and circulation spaces. Every apartment is designed to maximize daylight and natural ventilation, with windows facing both the courtyards and the surrounding neighborhood.

Exterior walkways, stairs, and covered terraces encourage movement, chance encounters, and time spent outdoors, while the rooftop commons offer sunlight and expansive views of regional landmarks. Efficient parking stackers reduce the footprint of parking, freeing up space for homes and shared spaces, and helping make Brookland Apartments a more affordable, peoplecentered housing option in a close-in Portland neighborhood.

In urban Portland, Ellen Browning Co-Housing is a pioneering community of ten homes created by a close-knit group of family and friends as a model for aging in place. The four-story building blends homes of varied sizes with gardens, porches, and terraced patios, integrating seamlessly into a lively mixed-use streetscape while fostering strong visual and social connections between residents.

Designed around accessibility and long-term comfort, shared social spaces, exercise and spa amenities, and universally designed flats allow residents to grow older together with dignity and ease. Cascading outdoor terraces and a welcoming street-level patio encourage year-round interaction, while a public art gallery at the lobby—gifted to the neighborhood—extends the spirit of community beyond the building.

Clad in warm terracotta tile, the building’s stepped, sculpted form reflects light and shadow and fits naturally into the surrounding hillside neighborhood. By combining the familiarity of single-family living with the efficiency of multifamily housing, Ellen Browning Co-Housing counters isolation and offers an urban, natureconnected model for community-centered aging in place.

Luxury homes blend into the neighborhood and complement the variety of surrounding home styles in this Northeast Portland neighborhood.

Outdoor spaces foster community and co-exist seamlessly with the environment, while honest materials and energy and water efficiency remain essential.

Drawing inspiration from the geological forces unleashed on Sullivan’s Gulch over a millennium, we explored what a building could look like if its form eroded. Wood detailing, monochromatic stucco, and fissure-like balconies give TwentyTwenty variations in material that evoke the glacial carving and erosion that once formed the land. By rotating the building on the site, its scale is minimized at the street level, emphasizing views to both Mt. Hood and downtown Portland.

Fariborz Maseeh Hall Portland State University LO C AT I O N : P O RT L A N D, O R SIZE: 220,000 SF T Y P E : R E N O V AT I O N COMPLETED: 2019

Improved connectivity, way-finding, and accessibility transform the fortress-like 1960s Neuberger Hall into a modern, interactive, lightfilled academic hub. The renovation brings the building into life safety compliance while strengthening the connection between the university and the city.

As a building that serves nearly all of PSU’s students, the design was driven by a desire to create an engaging, open, and humane experience.

With emphasis on access to daylight and connections between indoor and outdoor spaces, Fariborz Maseeh Hall (formerly Neuberger Hall) now connects to both active city thoroughfares surrounding it: SW Broadway and the Park Blocks. A central lightwell brings natural light into the heart of this dense building, and a more transparent facade provides visual connectivity to the outdoors.

With programs ranging from art and design to math and world languages to academic advising, a more connected and open FMH gives students, faculty, and staff more opportunities for cross-pollination.

Library & Culinary Arts Commons Skagit Valley College

Skagit Valley College is committed to supporting student success. The proposed Library and Culinary Arts Commons advances this goal by centralizing library and tutoring services and expanding the Culinary Arts program. Located at the campus’s main student entrance, it will serve as a welcoming and orienting hub.

During the design process, Hacker engaged over 50 students from 8 organizations in more than 6 hours of collaborative workshops. These sessions produced 10 artifacts reflecting the community’s values, needs, and aspirations for the new Commons.

A key insight emerged around the experience of non-traditional students—many of whom are lowincome, first-generation, or have disabilities. Unlike traditional students shaping personal identity, nontraditional students often rely on broader support systems, including children, siblings, and elders.

These community members offer essential care through shared activities like eating and spending time together, yet campus environments rarely accommodate them.

In response, Hacker’s design integrates inclusive strategies that better support the full Skagit Valley community, creating a more just, welcoming, and accessible library for all.

Health Technology STEM Portland Community College LO C AT I O N : P O RT L A N D, O R S I Z E : 1 2 7, 0 0 0 S F T Y P E : R E N O V AT I O N COM P L E T E D: 2024

Overhauls to learning labs, science classrooms, and communal spaces transforms a bunker-like midcentury health technology building to support 21st century learning with a focus on STEM science.

With their deep overhangs and low ceiling heights, these concrete buildings are challenging to reposition with the daylight, flexibility, and other qualities we now value in learning environments.

The goal for re-imagining the Health Technology building was to give the building a heart, bringing staff and students into its center with opportunities to cross paths, pause, and nurture their academic and social connections. A central, multiple-level atrium brings daylight to these collaborative spaces and provides visual connections across levels.

Hacker’s team trained with PCC on Critical Race Theory to rethink traditional assumptions about both the design of space and the engagement of marginalized users. Together, we were able to evaluate every aspect of the building with an eye toward the next 50 years of use.

Hellems Arts & Sciences University of Colorado Boulder Designed in collaboration with Handprint Architecture

The Hellems Arts and Sciences Building and Mary Rippon Theatre Capital Renewal Project at CU Boulder modernizes a historic Charles Klauder building while preserving its charm. The project benefits the CU Boulder community, with half of incoming undergraduates and 80% of postgraduates taking at least one course in Hellems. The goal is to create a welcoming, inclusive, and flexible facility for multiple departments.

For a century, Hellems has been central to the CU Boulder student experience. The design team balanced historic preservation with modern needs, transforming Hellems into an academic hub. Student input emphasized the need for social and quiet study spaces, prioritizing well-being and sustainability. The project aims for LEED Gold Certification and a 67% energy reduction.

Historic features were uncovered to introduce daylight and connect the interior with the landscape and Mary Rippon Theatre. The design opened floors to improve navigation, and consolidated faculty offices and classrooms enhance collaboration.

The exterior will be preserved with accessibility improvements. Interior design uses durable, healthy materials inspired by native vegetation, creating a welcoming environment that fosters a sense of belonging for students.

Hellems Arts & Science, University of Colorado Boulder

Canyon Commons Dining Hall George Fox University

LO C AT I O N : N E W B E R G , O R SIZE: 30,000 SF TYPE: NEW CONSTRUCTION

COMPLETED: 2016

This modern dining facility for round-the-clock use gives students a comfortable place to gather and replenish throughout the day. As a fast-track design/build process, the design had to maximize a lean budget without sacrificing user comfort and design excellence.

Harnessing the beauty of the densely forested site, Canyon Commons Dining Hall cultivates connections between interior and exterior spaces and provides ample access to natural daylight and views into the forest canopy. By working with the site instead of against it, we achieved an elegantly articulated design with low cost and construction impact. The dining room includes a coffee bar, dividable space to serve many banquet functions, and a focus on organic foods, and its natural materials and light create an atmosphere that is at once modern and homey.

Canyon Commons, George Fox University

Black Butte Ranch Lodge LO C AT I O N : B L A C K B U T T E , O R SIZE: 28,000 SF TYPE: NEW CONSTRUCTION COMPLETED: 2022

Like Hacker’s work on other parts of the Ranch, the new structure honors and evolves the original ranch design, enhancing the landscape through careful framing of views and use of regional materials. The interior highlights wood with exposed structures and finishes, using contrasting tones of native species for warmth and openness.

A uniquely textured double-height stone fireplace anchors the space, blending nostalgia with modernity. Restaurant booths mimic the carving of pools by the nearby Metolius River. Salvaged wood from the original lodge is used for guard rails, screens, furniture, and wall finishes. The exterior, clad in Shou Sugi Ban (charred cedar), maintains the weathered look of the previous building and adds durability. The landscape design features drought-tolerant native plants, fostering habitat creation. Regional materials were used to reduce transportation impacts and boost the local economy.

The new building is twice the size of the original Lodge, divided into three sections: public spaces (restaurant, bar, fireside lounge, upper floor lounge and bar, private dining room, and outdoor lounge), a private event area (large event room, dressing room, and meeting room), and a state-of-the-art kitchen with expanded catering services, centrally located to serve the entire facility.

Black Butte Ranch Lodge

Lakeside elevates the legacy of architectural excellence at Black Butte Ranch by replacing wellworn pool facility with world-class contemporary recreational and dining complex.

With Lakeside, we set out to both honor and evolve the Northwest modern aesthetic of Black Butte Ranch. Because of the site’s stunning setting, it was essential that the building be secondary to the landscape—that the architecture serve as an aperture for the site, making connections to the land stronger and more immediate.

Lakeside at Black Butte

Okta Restaurant LO C AT I O N : M C M I N N V I L L E , O R S I Z E : 9, 0 0 0 S F TYPE: NEW CONSTRUCTION COMPLETED: 2021

Two-Michelin Star Chef, Matthew Lightner, sought to create a new restaurant expressive of the Willamette Valley landscape. The cuisine needed to work in concert with the space and create a spiritual dining experience punctuated by a tangible sense of luxury. The menu would include food crafted from local ingredients, harvested by Matthew, and full of wonder; the interior space would follow suit.

The restaurant offers three distinct dining experiences. The entry features soft seating reminiscent of the cloud cover often enveloping Yamhill County’s farmland, contrasted by the warm crackle of a wood-burning fireplace. In the dining room, guests find white oak banquettes and locally crafted tables, lending softness to the space. The space centers on an open kitchen anchored by a massive erratic basalt boulder, a relic of the Missoula floods that carried it into the Willamette Valley over a million years ago.

Below the restaurant lies a hidden cellar bar with lounge seating and an expansive wine library.

Designed to feel like home, the cellar features rich leathers and burnt sugar-glazed terracotta tiles, complementing house-made larders, crafted cocktails, and fine wines. The cool tones of the upper lounge and dining room give way to the cellar’s warm earthiness. Throughout the restaurant, hand-troweled plaster walls provide a consistent, unifying element, enhancing the guest experience across all spaces.

Outpost LO C AT I O N : H O O D R I V E R , O R SIZE: 50,000 SF T Y P E : U N B U I LT COM P L E T E D: 2024

Situated in Hood River, Oregon, The Outpost provides a stay for guest seeking to explore the Columbia Gorge, with the added conveniences of nearby downtown Hood River. The 50,000-squarefoot building includes 88 residential units and a flexible ground floor programmed with a guest restaurant and bar that can adapt over time to meet evolving community and operational needs. Additional amenities include a spa for guest relaxation and a covered gear loading area, ensuring convenience for adventure-focused visitors. With direct e-bike access to downtown, The Outpost also incorporates infrastructure for bikes and gear storage to support an active lifestyle.

Strategic placement of massing and openings frames key view corridors toward the river and city center, maintaining a strong dialogue with the landscape.

The design takes inspiration from the dramatic landscape of the Columbia Gorge, with respect for its outdoor recreation culture and small-town vibrancy. The region’s serrated cliffs and layered geology are translated into a rhythmic architectural edge along the street. The site’s boundaries are activated through a mix of residential loft entries, commercial flex spaces, and pedestrian pathways that encourage movement and interaction along all edges. These elements create a porous and lively perimeter.

Cascada Hotel & Spa LO C AT I O N : B E N D, O R SIZE: 225,000 SF TYPE: NEW CONSTRUCTION EXPECTED COMPLETED: 2026

Cascada Hotel & Spa is conceptually built upon nine pillars of wellness for both people and planet; fitness, food, hydrotherapy, building, furnishings, food, biophilia, art, and experiences. This is a place where guests can stay, restore themselves in natural hot springs, and take part in experiences designed to support physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

The building houses over 100 hotel suites, a hydrothermal spa with indoor and outdoor spaces, ground-floor retail, conference and co-working facilities, and essential back-of-house functions.

At its core is a commitment to creating the healthiest environment possible—both in terms of sustainability and human wellness. Materials are carefully selected: no petroleum-based products are used, all furnishings are vegan, and biophilic design principles guide both layout and finish. Natural elements like obsidian, basalt, concrete, and timber are left as honest as possible, emphasizing their texture, thermal properties, and connection to the surrounding volcanic terrain.

The form is based on a shifting warehouse scheme, a gesture to industry in motion, but softened and shaped by the forces of erosion and flow. The architecture becomes a vessel for the project’s nine guiding pillars—three each for health, sustainability, and wonder. Cascada Hotel & Spa

The Way West is a collaborative space by Bend Brewing Company and Sisters Smokehouse, blending a market, café, and bar into a single immersive experience. Located on the ground floor of the Jackstraw apartment complex, the space is part of a larger mixed-use development in a vehicle-oriented area designed to serve both residents and the broader community.

The client had a clear vision for a space rooted in a Western, masculine, and photogenic aesthetic, with each area offering a unique ambiance. The design team, Hacker and Jackstraw, drew inspiration from the rugged spirit of the American West, with a focus on storytelling, natural materials, and atmospheric transitions between distinct spaces.

Using materials like barnwood beams, limewash paint, faux rock, and canvas ceilings allows the space to evolve as guests move through it.

Materials like rammed earth plaster, sculpted shotcrete, and carved wood are used for the bar face, while wood trim, woven poufs, cowhide rugs, and chalkboard menus reinforce the rustic and earthy aesthetic.

The venue includes 147 indoor seats and up to 80 outdoors, with a 660 SF kitchen and 193 SF walk-in cooler. It’s designed to support everything from casual daytime meals to lively evening gatherings, all within a space that feels grounded, cinematic, and distinctly regional.

The Way West

Designed as a future-forward’ middle school, The French International School considers long-term adaptability, environmental stewardship, and students’ development toward becoming actively engaged global citizens. Maximize the school’s lean budget to provide a range of spaces where students can socialize and work independently.

The L-shaped building hugs the wooded campus edge, evoking the idea of a ‘nurse log,’ a fallen tree limb full of nooks inhabited by different critters. The building placement on the site takes advantage of both the natural beauty and the educational opportunities offered by the forested campus. Classroom wings are joined by a social hub where students can gather for lunch or special events. The project improves connectivity among the whole campus with the creation of a pedestrian street, amphitheater, outdoor dining facilities, and a new trailhead deck leading to forested trails.

The new Lower School at OES (Oregon Episcopal School) promotes the exchange of knowledge and creativity among students, encourages experimentation, and embraces nature as a teaching tool.

Using the school’s inquiry-based pedagogy as a driving theme for the design, the building itself encourages exploration and experimentation both inside and out. Child-centric and supportive learning spaces include flexible classrooms, dedicated group collaboration spaces, a science lab, an art studio, a dining and performance space, and a new green commons space. On a path to net zero, the building teaches students about sustainability through visible storm water management systems, natural materials and finishes, and naturally lit classrooms.

Transforming an aging gymnasium into a vibrant new athletics facility, The Athletic Center at Oregon Episcopal School supports varsity team sports and physical education classes while also providing an inspiring, comfortable space for all-school assemblies, events, and gatherings. The goal is to create a good, successful experience for all students regardless of their interest or skill in sports The design centers on the reclamation of underutilized spaces, replacing facilities like showers and locker rooms with flexible, all-purpose team rooms that keep athletes and coaches together and make coaching and team-building for mixed-gender teams easier to achieve.

The Spieker Center of the Performing Arts creates a new arts neighborhood and public face of the school that supports student creativity and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration. Formal and informal learning environments make a new home for Middle and Upper School music and arts programs.

More than just a performing arts venue, Spieker Center is designed to be the living room of Menlo’s campus, where students and staff can come to study, work, or hang out. The design seeks to draw people inside at all hours of the day - inviting them in for an evening or matinee performance, or encouraging passersby to come inside and explore.

With expansive floor to ceiling windows along a major thoroughfare, the design connects inside to outside, puts arts and music programs on display, and connects these programs to the campus community.

Maintaining a strong connection to the landscape, The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon becomes a vibrant home full of natural light and fresh air, with space for religious education programs that inspire curiosity and lifelong learning in people of all ages, both within our congregation and among the greater community.

Inside and out, the experience of the building’s place on earth is visceral. Inspired by the region’s active volcanic geology and the 20,000-year-old lava flow that cuts right through the 12-acre site, the building—a fusion of cedar, stone, and glass— seems carved out of the land. Central to the design is a 250-seat light-filled sanctuary that opens to a social hall, emblematic of the congregation’s love of gathering.

Exhibiting the natural history and cultural development of the high desert region through creative indoor and outdoor experiences, the High Desert Museum is a staple of Bend art and culture.

The building is designed to minimize its physical and visual impact, and preserve the area’s natural landscape.

A cluster of simple, barn-like structures with extensive native stone and wood finishes integrates into the landscape, while the interior continues the palette of warm, natural materials. A broad gallery hall unites the museum exhibit rooms, creating spaces that are welcoming and intimate, as well as accommodating to large groups of people.

The Portland Japanese Garden’s Cultural Crossing Expansion creates a serene, pilgrimage-like journey from the city to the forest, drawing visitors into an immersive experience of Japanese arts and culture.

An enhanced entrance welcomes visitors with a water garden that marks the transition from the city to the Garden’s tranquility. From there, the journey follows an unassuming path uphill, where the Cultural Village’s green roofs begin to appear through the trees, quietly drawing you forward.

Set outside the historic Garden to preserve its peace and integrity, the Village centers on the new Tateuchi Courtyard and includes the Village House and Tea Café, creating more opportunities for activity and gathering. The Village House features art gallery spaces, a multi-purpose classroom, administrative offices, a gift shop, and the Vollum Library, a comprehensive resource on Japanese gardening and related arts. The Tea Café offers a place to rest and refresh while experiencing Japanese tradition.

The role of Public Works Department is to keep the city running and enable its citizens to thrive through maintenance and management of natural resources. In recognition of this work, the design captures the moment where industry and the elements meet through hardy materials crafted in ways that express their connection with nature. Three gabled buildings forms emulate the industrial context and are offset to create welcoming plazas lined with native plantings and stormwater planters. Central attractors unite the form and build community amongst diverse departments, field and office workers alike while also providing choice in ways to work and collaborate. A mass timber structure is expressed throughout the building and set against a simple palette of steely tones, the pattern of untreated hot rolled steel, exposed aggregate concrete, and seating that harkens to a leather work glove.

Priority was placed on material durability, climate, and human health.

First Tech Credit Union is a down-to-earth and fiscally responsible corporate campus. Providing workspace for up to 900 employees, the building supports a variety of positions by balancing security needs with employee community and connection. In direct response to the client’s “People First” motto, design decisions were made through the lens of health, comfort, and happiness for employees. Every work station has equal access to natural light and views to the outdoors, and the exposed CLT and glulam structure lends warmth and tactility. The project’s sustainable achievements are a direct result of deep collaboration with the client and are proof that sustainable design can also be fiscally responsible.

Guided by biophilic design principles and occupant health, Eastside Office prioritizes access to natural daylight, connections and views to the neighborhood and landscape, and deeply integrated sustainable design strategies. At six stories, the building includes five floors of new office space with ground-floor retail and restaurant space along an active multimodal thoroughfare.

Glue-laminated columns and beams, and CLT floors, are fully visible throughout the interior, a nod to the timber-heavy industrial past of the neighbrohood. Double-height spaces lend volume and circulation to the interior, and allow tenants to create more intimate office layouts than a typical single-floor plan.

Hacker realized a synergy early on - our work is vastly different in scale and experience, but our process and values are in complete alignment. With that, we began our inquiry with Brainium to better understand their specific goals for their growing studio. A space with an intuitive, rational flow, simple material palette, elements that support the health and well-being of staff and superb acoustics and lighting were some of the more primary directives. Upon entry, a generous reception lounge, defined by built-in seating that lines the perimeter, welcomes visitors and staff. The palette is minimal: white and shades of blue painted walls, white-washed tambour panel, blue upholstery and concrete flooring provide a canvas for Brainium to develop some truly special moments in the space with colorful, interactive digital art, as well as relating to the urban views.

The design of 9North is heavily influenced by its unique triangular site at the gateway to Portland’s River District, where the city grid converges with the diagonal of the river and railroad. Buffering the railroad on one side and actively engaging the street and pedestrian experience on the other side, the building bridges the divide between the neighorhood’s industrial roots and its current urban conditions. The building is designed for maximum flexibility, to accommodate small tenants as well as multi-floor offices. Thoughtfully placed windows provide iconic views of neighboring bridges and Union Station.

Despite its busy, urban context, Field Office provides physical and visual access to nature throughout the building, offering a workplace where inside can be outside, and where outside can come in. Office spaces come with sweeping iconic Portland views and abundant natural light, and the building is designed for flexibility, allowing tenant spaces to adapt over time. Using industrialinspired materials and forms, including reclaimed wood for warmth and human-scale texture, the design of the building responds and contributes to the transition of this former industrial district into a vibrant, accessible mixed-use neighborhood.

The project aims to create a centrally located health hub that consolidates multiple clinical services and expands access to care for lowincome, uninsured, and underinsured community members. By co-locating healthcare services with affordable senior and family housing, the hub will strengthen community support systems while offering integrated, team-based care across medical, pediatric, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, and substance use treatment.

Specialized spaces will support the Street Medicine Team in serving unhoused populations, and the facility’s design will prioritize staff wellness through supportive features that reduce burnout.

With an emphasis on patient dignity, cultural responsiveness, and trauma-informed care, the hub will foster healing, trust, and equitable access to health services.
