Getting to the Core

Getting to the Core is an educational resource guide that connects the Live at Rose Lehrman performing artist series to the core curriculum of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

Each page of this booklet lists: • A performance • Suggested classes that may have a potential connection • Special events that are planned with the artist(s) Interested faculty are encouraged to review the guide and consider building the artists’ work into his or her syllabus. Examples include: • Requiring students to attend the performance and then discussing the work in class* or giving a writing assignment • Giving extra credit to students who attend the performance by having them write a response or provide documentation of his or her attendance • Inviting the artist to your classroom to lead a discussion on the work It is our hope that by integrating the arts into your class, students will have a unique opportunity to learn the coursework from a different perspective, which can be engaging and fun. * Lisa Campbell is available to attend your class and assist in the conversation if you are interested.

Free Tickets Faculty who require his or her students to attend a performance are eligible for one complimentary ticket to attend the show. Simply email a copy of your syllabus to Lisa Campbell, director of Live at Rose Lehrman, at lacampbe@hacc.edu. She will make arrangements for your free ticket to be available at the box office for pick up the night of the performance.

Student Tickets HACC students will pay only $10 for their ticket. Each student will receive one discounted ticket per show. Please help us to spread the word! Discounted tickets must be purchased at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center box office with a HACC student ID.

Guest Artist Residencies Each guest artist is in residence from two to five days, depending on our contract terms. In addition to their public performance, they do workshops, masterclasses and guest lectures. If you are interested in having an artist visit your class or would like to bring your class to a scheduled special event, please contact Lisa Campbell to make arrangements. Classroom visitation opportunities are limited.

BODYTRAFFIC WEDNESDAY, JAN. 23, 2019 | 7:30 P.M. Los Angeles-based BODYTRAFFIC has become one of the most talked about dance companies in the country! The evening of mixed repertoire will including:

• “A Trick of Light,” inspired by the rare green flash that occurs just before the sun disappears from view at sunset, is a colorful and nostalgic work.

• “Dust” takes a dark look at the powers that steer us in today’s society.

Humanities Intro to Humanities/101

• “O2Joy” is a playful, contemporary dance piece set to American jazz music. The work is ballet based, peppered with syncopated hip-hop and drenched in light-hearted humor.

Residency Opportunities Please join us for a pre-show discussion at 6:30 p.m. in the studio theatre of the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus. This talk is free and open to all.

DANCE English Fundamentals of College Writing I/050

CONTRA-TIEMPO URBAN LATIN DANCE THEATER TUESDAY, FEB. 12, 2019 | 7:30 P.M. Contra-Tiempo, a bold and multilingual Los Angeles-based company, roots its work in salsa and Afro-Cuban and draws from hip-hop, urban and contemporary dance theater. Their performance of “JoyUS JustUS” reclaims the dominant narrative of people of color in this country as being underprivileged, voiceless, powerless and victimized, and flips it by embodying stories of joy collected from communities of color in South Los Angeles. The stories shared in this work are personal truths about the power of hope, faith and family, the strength of the villages that have raised our children and the wealth that lives in our collective histories of struggle and resistance.

Residency Opportunities Immediately following the performance there will be a “GetDown Party” on the stage. Students will have an opportunity to dance with the company!

VOICEPLAY THURSDAY, MAR. 14, 2019 | 7:30 P.M. After performing on season four of NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” VoicePlay made a name for themselves as an original, imaginative and fun a cappella singing group. Using only the human voice, they create the orchestrated sound of an entire musical production.
