Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco

Annual Report 2019

WE ARE BUILDING COMMUNITY

Dear Habitat Supporter, It has been an exciting year for Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco!

REVITALIZING NEIGHBORHOODS

Not only did we begin celebrating our 30th anniversary of affordable homebuilding, we also kicked-off the next three decades with significant announcements and progress. Because of the support of our wonderful community of donors, volunteers and advocates we broke ground in July on our development of 20 homes on Jefferson Blvd in downtown Redwood City.

FRAMING THE FUTURE

BREAKING GROUND

And in November, in the shadow of construction vehicles, we held a ceremony to inaugurate an eight home project at Amber Drive in San Francisco. There we honored Mischa and Brigitte Seligman who donated the land of their former family home in memory of Mischa’s mother Maria ‘Mitzi’ Kolisch. The San Francisco Chronicle front page story on the event captured perfectly the remarkable moment when Mischa donned a hard hat and put his shovel in the ground. Hard on the heels of those projects, we are poised to break ground on six homes in Daly

City and have begun the planning application process for further new developments in Marin and San Mateo counties. We have used the strength of the Habitat for Humanity name to amplify the voices of working families and press the case for affordable homebuilding across our region and across our state. We have firmly established ourselves as a leading commentator on housing in California in print and broadcast media. And we have received plaudits in Sacramento for our work—on our own, and in collaboration with our colleagues in Habitat California—championing legislation to make it easier to build and harder to stymie affordable housing. We are pleased to report, on behalf of the board, that Habitat’s finances are strong and we are well-equipped to continue our work this year and the years ahead. In Community.

“IT’S A GREAT JOY” Earlier this year 98 year old WWII vet Mischa Seligman celebrated the launch of an eight-unit Habitat project on land he donated in memory of his mother. Mischa’s late mother, Maria Kolisch, moved in to a home on the property in the 1950s when the now well-developed neighborhood was a large open meadow. She had a pioneering career as a scientist in the city, working with radioactive substances in the then nascent field of medical imaging. The Habitat family celebrated with Mischa in November at an event on the site. A reporter and photographer from the San Francisco Chronicle were on hand to report on the festivities. “My mother was very socially minded,” said Mischa. “She loved San Francisco, she loved her life here, and she wanted to give something back to the people of the city.” “It’s a great joy, when I think of eight families having a decent life here.”

Habitat’s Amber Drive development will feature 2, 3, and 4-bedroom homes for working families. It is the perfect complement to a beautiful neighborhood where affordable housing has traditionally been hard to come by.
