Putting nature at the heart of everything we do brings a number of benefits, says Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. Sue Bradley discovers how increasing numbers of new housing developments are taking a fresh approach WORDS: Sue Bradley

ringing nature closer to the places in which people live, work and play is a win-win situation on many levels.

After all, it’s been well documented that closer contact with wildlife vastly benefits our health and wellbeing, while building projects that pay close attention to environmental factors and the needs of the natural world are proven to have a positive effect on a range of issues, from flooding and

drought to species decline.

Now a not-for-profit organisation that began as a partnership between Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and the University of the West of England in 2015 has come up with a clear standards framework and accreditation system for developers seeking to put together schemes that create multiple benefits for people and the natural world.

Building with Nature (BwN) covers every stage of the process,

city areas, rural settlements, urban fringe green field sites and places identified for regeneration or retrofit green infrastructure projects.

‘It’s been created in partnership with planners, developers and other key stakeholders; it promotes a shared understanding of what “good” looks like throughout the whole life cycle of green infrastructure,’ explains programme manager Sophie Jones.

‘Even small projects can make a positive contribution. Historically developers came in and cleared a site so that they could start with a blank canvas; our approach puts nature at the heart of decisionmaking, bringing existing natural features into the design from the earliest point rather than adding landscaping at the end.’

Among the case studies promoted by Building with Nature is the Lower Mill Estate

in the Cotswold Water Park, developed by Habitat First Group. This landscape-led transformation of a former quarry to create 575 holiday homes and areas of green space and water for wildlife is considered an exemplar of what can be achieved.

The scheme is divided into distinctive ‘villages’ in which a sensitive approach has been taken to architectural styles and landscaping. Lower Mill’s bodies of water, which include rivers and lakes, its flower-rich hay meadows and wide open skies all contribute to an overall sense of place.

‘Placing high-quality green infrastructure in the heart of placemaking maximises benefits for people and wildlife, bringing people closer to nature and building great places to live, making a major contribution towards better health and wellbeing in our communities and tackling climate and ecological emergencies,’ says Sophie.

The clue is in the name when it comes to identifying the brown hairstreak butterfly.

This insect is dark brown with orange markings on its upperside, with small ‘tails’ protruding from its hind wings, while its underwings are ginger with distinctive wavy white streaks.

This butterfly has become less common in the Cotswolds over recent decades, although small clusters can sometimes be seen from July to September around woodlands or farmlands, particularly above the tops of ash trees or thick hedges, where they congregate to mate and feed on honeydew secreted by aphids.

Adults also find sustenance in flowers such as hemp-agrimony, common fleabane and blackberry, while females lay eggs on the shoots of blackthorns, the food plant for their well-camouflaged green caterpillars.

Lower Mill Estate within the Cotswold Water Park is considered to have the only known population of brown hairstreaks breeding in Gloucestershire and, for this reason, blackthorn has been incorporated into every new hedgerow and is often used in the mix of native species mix between properties.

The decline in numbers of brown hairstreaks has been attributed to the removal of hedgerows and the practice of flailing, which causes the removal of eggs.

Hedgerow management at Lower Mill takes place over winter and follows advice from Butterfly Conservation.
