Across the deep blue sea The story of the Dorset Blueberry company starts all the way back in 1949, with a generous parson on Lulu Island, Canada, placing an advert in that year’s Farmer’s Chronicle magazine.

The advert simply read:

“100 free blueberry plants to anyone in the UK who wants them” and David Trehane’s enterprising grandfather was one of only four people who took up this offer of trans-Atlantic philanthropy.

The highly acidic, sandy soil of Dorset turned out to be a perfect fit for this versatile little berry. The plants soon began

Blueberry Pie Smoothie Ingredients: 2 bananas 125g blueberries 330ml almond milk Method: 1. Peel the bananas and break them into a blender. Tip in the blueberries.

2. Give the almond milk a shake to make sure it is well mixed, then pour in 330ml. Add a few ice cubes and blitz for a few mins till smooth. Serve straight away and enjoy!

to thrive, and there was only one thing for it. In 1951, 1000 more were ordered, and the UK’s first commercial blueberry plantation was born! David’s grandfather and mother spent their lives here, tending their blossoming blueberry business, and now, half a century later, it’s David’s turn to steer the ship.

The berries you’ll find in your boxes today still come from some of those very same plants that braved the Atlantic waves all those years ago. The times may have moved on since then, but in David’s neck of the woods, the berries are still hand-picked by experts with an eye for the perfect plumpness. It’s too important a job for anything less!
